The recently released CSO data indicated that the population above the age of 55 now stands at almost 19 per cent. This represents a more than doubling of that in 1980. In actual numbers, it is a little over one quarter of a million people.

This follows the trend in the developed world where the Stanford Center on Longevity indicates that there has been a 30-year increase in life expectancy. This is due, in part, to advances in medical sciences and allied fields including nutrition and sports science. Genetics, however, may be the dominant factor in that there are those whose lifestyle does not conform to generally accepted tenets of healthy living but who nevertheless live to an advanced age.

The late fitness guru Jack Lalanne, who died at the age of 96, promoted proper eating, exercise, positive thinking and relaxation. Continuing clinical and research studies have confirmed this approach. In fact, the diet recommended for longevity and disease prevention includes one high in vegetables, fruits and whole grains and very low in animal products and refined carbohydrates, in addition to exercising.

The importance of the mind-body connection has emerged as a significant factor. Meditation and mindfulness can play a critical role in stress reduction and weight control and are thus being promoted as part of the programme on holistic and preventive medicine now being emphasised.

Despite the advances made in the science of longevity, the average life span is 80-plus years. People 90 and beyond are still the exception, for the ageing process may be delayed by lifestyle changes but cannot be stopped. So the focus now is on research to delay and reverse the aging process and to developing a range of assistive technologies.

Selectively manipulating protein modifications

Protein activity is strictly regulated. Incorrect or poor protein regulation can lead to uncontrolled growth and thus cancer or chronic inflammation. Members of the Institute of Veterinary Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Zurich have identified enzymes that can regulate the activity of medically important proteins. Their discovery enables these proteins to be manipulated very selectively, opening up new treatment methods for inflammations and cancer.

For a healthy organism, it is crucial for proteins to be active or inactive at the right time. The corresponding regulation is often based on a chemical modification of the protein structure: Enzymes attach small molecules to particular sites on a protein or remove them, thereby activating or deactivating the protein. Members of the Institute of Veterinary Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Zurich in collaboration with other Institutes have now discovered how the inactivation of a protein, which is important for medicine, can be reversed.

New group of ADP-ribosylhydrolases identified

An important protein modification is ADP-ribosylation, which is involved in certain types of breast cancer, cellular stress reactions and gene regulation. So-called ADP-ribosyltransferases attach the ADP ribose molecule to proteins, thereby altering their function. In recent years, many ADP-ribosyltransferases have been discovered that can convey single or several ADP-riboses to different proteins. Enzymes that can remove these riboses again, however, are less well known. Professor Michael Hottiger's team of researchers has now identified a new group of such ADP-ribosylhydrolases. The scientists discovered that a so-called macrodomain is responsible for removing the ADP-riboses in human proteins, but also in the bacterium Archaeoglobus fulgidus.

"We therefore assume that the reversal of the modification takes place in a similar way in different species," explains Michael Hottiger.

Biomedically relevant: inactivation of the modified enzyme GSK3

The researchers also prove that ADP-ribosylhydrolases can remove the ADP-ribose of the intensively studied enzyme GSK3, which regulates the synthesis of storage substances and is important in the progression of various diseases. ADP-ribosylation deactivates GSK3, which can be reversed again by the newly identified enzyme. "Our discovery enables ADP-ribose modification to be manipulated and tested selectively, and new treatment methods developed for diseases such as inflammations or cancer," concludes Michael Hottiger.

WSU microbiology students present research

Weber State University students from the College of Sciences microbiology department attended the American Society of Microbiology meeting in Pocatello, Idaho, on Saturday. Many students from the department presented undergraduate research through poster presentations to peers and society leaders.

Alessia Banning, a senior in microbiology, said presenting research at the meeting has been an eye-opening experience.

The questions about my research have helped me learn how to discuss current research techniques and justify our results, Banning said. This experience has prepared me for graduate-school research opportunities.

Students from Idaho State University, Brigham Young University and WSU meet with student leaders to discuss research and microbiological topics at the event. Seniors from other schools gave the oral presentations on mostly environment-based microbiology topics.

Karen Nakaoka, a microbiology professor at WSU, gave two separate sponsored poster presentations at the conference.

I sparked this research from an idea I had on comparison of clinical samples to environmental samples of antibiotic-resistant organisms growing in the Great Salt Lake, Nakaoka said. It is important that students are contributing to the research and presenting on findings to their peers. It has helped the students gain research experience and helped the project move along at a good pace.

Different students can contribute at different stages of the project to promote research. For example, one group of students can write the grant proposal while another group performs the research and analysis.

The keynote speaker of the conference, Carolyn Weber, discussed microbial gas components of volcanoes. Weber presented on her experiences in Hawaii sampling from volcanic eruption sites for her Ph.D. project. The breakthrough in her research came from carbon monoxide oxidation in volcanic rock to help boost the botanical growth post eruption.

Students need to see that research ideas can be part of thinking outside the box in graduate settings, Weber said. I hope that those students attending the conference take away the concept of bigger picture within their research ideas.

This yearly meeting of the intermountain branch is usually months before the nationwide meeting, which is being held in Colorado this year.
