Although she hasn't been on the show as long as the other surgeons, Maggie Pierce has definitely become one of the most underrated characters.

The character of Maggie Pierce was introduced to the Grey's Anatomy universe at the end of season 10. Since then, she has become one of the central characters on the show. Coming in as the new head of cardiothoracic surgery which was Cristina's turf, and revealing herself to be Ellis Grey's biological daughter meant that she was immediately implicated in a lot of storylines on the show.

Maggie is an incredibly talented and successful surgeon, who is passionate about perfection and doing things right. She takes time to think things through and makes very sensible decisions about everything. Here are some of Maggie's best moments from the show so far.

Viewers first meet Maggie when she's interviewing for the Head of the Cardio department. Cristina runs the interview and is annoyed by the fact that Maggie had completed both high school and med school early, and had already been the Head of the department at another institution for two years.

From the get-go, fans get a glimpse of how talented and successful Maggie is. And how that could be potentially seen as annoying by some people.

The first time that Maggie offers to babysit Meredith's kids is quite a cute moment. She lists all the ways in which she's qualified to babysit children, starting from being registered as a babysitter when she was a teenager.

Maggie tells Meredith that she's the sort of friend who you can lean on. Maggie's genuine excitement at the prospect of babysitting her niece and nephew shows what an incredibly sweet person she is.

When Sabi died due to complications from the surgery, Maggie just quit surgery and holed up in her house. No one was able to get through to her. Richard was the one who kept pushing her and explained how to be imperfect was to be human.

Maggie realized that no one had told her this before and it was something that helped her a lot. Richard being able to get through a really upset Maggie was a nice bonding moment between the two.

When Bailey's mother was close to her death because of Covid-19 complications, Maggie was able to relate very closely with her. Their interaction on the bench outside where they talked, not just about their mothers' deaths, but the things their mothers had inspired them to do was such a beautiful moment of camaraderie between the two.

They frankly spoke about the ways in which their schools and guidance counselors have very unsubtly tried to make them feel out of place, but how they would overcome all that.

Amelia and Meredith are two really strong personalities who, at certain points in time, were constantly at odds with each other. The three "sisters" lived together in Meredith's old house. Maggie had to be the mediator between them on several occasions.

Maggie has infinite patience when it comes to both of them, and she tried her best to smooth things over with them. It is quite funny to actually see Maggie try to keep Meredith and Amelia both civil.

Maggie Pierce and Winston Ngudu hit it off brilliantly at the conference. Their first date was a long one, and they both seemed so happy and excited to be with each other. It was incredible how they immediately got together so well, and Maggie's cute crush coming to fruition was wonderful to watch.

Especially considering the tragic state of her love life. Her interactions with Winston on their first date was quite amazing to watch because of the intense chemistry between them.

Maggie Pierce was probably the first person in the hospital to find out about Teddy's pregnancy. The already complicated situation was made further complicated by the fact that Maggie was aware of Amelia becoming closer to Owen, and how Teddy's pregnancy would be a bombshell for them all.

Maggie had to keep it quiet because of doctor-patient confidentiality, but she was struggling to keep the secret and kept hounding on Teddy to tell Owen.

Maggie puts Amelia in her place when Amelia comes to her with questions about whether she had inadvertently given someone the impression that she was being racially biased.

Maggie tells Amelia that she's not a spokesperson for all Black people, and to always check and consider her white privilege. While it was a brief conversation between the sisters, it was thought-provoking nevertheless.

Maggie Pierce showed how you can be in a solid relationship, and even in love, during a pandemic. The cute dates between Maggie and Winston were adorable, to say the least.

They used technology in the best ways possible to keep their connection strong, and relied on each other for getting themselves through the day.

Maggie gives many impassionedmonologues in season 17 about how the effects of the pandemic are disproportionately affecting Black and other minority groups. She talks about how it was systemic racism that led to this condition, and it is quite a heartbreaking reaction to see how much this was deeply impacting her. It was also heartbreaking to discover that this systemic issue wasn't getting as much attention as it should have.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Fans Want to See More of Tom’s ‘Softer’ Side – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

A show thats been on the air for 17 seasons is bound to have a few characters that people dont like. Greys Anatomy has had a slew of unlikeable characters, from Perfect Penny (the doctor that missed beloved Dereks brain bleed) to the ruthless Erica Hahn to Meredith Greys own mother.

One character that seems to strive for people not to like him is Tom Koracick. The neurosurgeon seems pretty full of himself, but hes really a good guy on the inside. Fans have caught glimpses of the sweet side of him, and they want more

Tom Koracick is a phenomenal neurosurgeon at Grey Sloan Memorial. Before coming to Grey Sloan, he was the Head of Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins, where he met Amelia Shepherd. He was her mentor and taught her a great deal.

When she learned that she had a brain tumor, Koracick was the first person she turned to for help.

Koracick comes across as incredibly arrogant, and spends a lot of time praising his skill as a surgeon. He purposely puts up a wall so people cant get too close, and this makes it difficult for anyone to like him. Hes actually a very caring person underneath the tough guy show he puts on.

Fans have seen the softer side of Tom numerous times throughout the series. He once helped April during a rough patch, when she was doubting her faith. He consoled Bailey after a miscarriage, and he is always thoughtful and friendly toward the pediatric patients.

When Bailey had the miscarriage, Koracick shared a story about his son. His son, David, died at 10 years old from a tragic accident with a baseball bat. It had been two weeks before Halloween, which was his sons favorite holiday. Fans saw the intense pain that Tom felt as he talked about his sons Luke Skywalker costume that he couldnt bear to put away.

Its clear that Greys fans would like to see more of that side of the prickly neurosurgeon. One fan on Reddit said, There was a time when Tom opened up to Bailey about losing a child. I think that softer side of him should be shown more. I really love how he actually cares about people around him but try to act cool. I think thats adorable.

Along with seeing more of Koracicks softer side, fans want to see more of him and Teddy. The two began getting to know each other when Koracick found her in the hospital lounge, massaging her feet after a long day. Teddy was pregnant with Owens baby, but after chatting, Tom learned that they werent a couple any longer.

Koracick fell for Teddy, but worried about her relationship with Owen. He became very involved with her pregnancy, and at one point, he found a house for her and the baby to live in. After Teddy had her baby, he went to the hospital to visit her, only to find out that she and Owen had reconciled. He told her he would be there waiting when things fell apart with Owen, because he loved her.

Although Koracick had promised to always wait for her, the latest encounter contradicted that. When Teddy tried to buy him a coffee and explain why she hadnt spoken to him much over the past few months, Tom asked her to leave him alone. He said he had been hurt so much and just needed to get over her.

So it doesnt seem too promising for Tom and Teddy, no matter how much fans are hoping for them to end up together One Reddit post summed up a lot of what the fans are feeling, him and Teddy had more chemistry in one episode than her and Owen ever had. But I feel like the show has been treating him like hes garbage, especially this season. Im not sure I want him to be with Teddy because she hurt him a lot, but I really hope he finally gets a happy storyline soon.

Things werent looking great for Koracick this season. Hed apparently given up on the woman he was madly in love with, and has COVID. However, in the last episode, he seemed to be looking in better spirits when he wheeled himself into Merediths room (who also has COVID) to chat.

The two joked around about who was a better surgeon, and it looked as if both were recovering well.

Most fans thought that one of these two surgeons hit with COVID would die this season. Killing off Meredith Grey would almost certainly mean the end of the series, while having Koracick die wouldnt change the show that much.

So for a while, many of us though that he would be the one to go. The winter finale might have people singing a different tune, however

It goes without saying that 2020 was a challenging year for the food industry. A worldwide pandemic that wreaked havoc on food supply chains, forced the permanent closure of thousands of restaurants worldwide, and pushed millions of people deeper into food insecurity showed us just how fragile the systems that keep us nourished and fed are.

But its also the recognition of this fragility thats led to an increasing sense of urgency to invest in the future of food. The good news is the timing couldnt be better. We are at a culmination point in the fields of bioengineering, chemistry and food science where decades of hard work and progress have allowed ideas that once seemed the domain of science fiction to leap into the labs and, now and in the not-to-distant future, onto our plates.

And while 2020 was a year of unprecedented progress across our food system, I expect 2021 to be even more impactful. Below are four predictions for some of what we could see this year.

Cultured Meat Milestones Will Accelerate

Throughout 2020, announcements of milestones for cultured meat flowed with increasing regularity. New prototypes of practically every type of meat ranging from chicken to beef to kangaroo debuted, heads of state and other famous folks got their first tastes of lab-grown meat, and at the end Eat Just announced the first regulatory approval and retail sale of cultured chicken in Singapore.

And well see even more milestones this year. Investment will grow and excitement will build as more companies move out of the labs and into early pilot production facilities for their cultured meat products. Other countries will follow Singapores lead and give regulatory green light for the sale of cultured meat. And finally, well see the debut of more cultured meat products in high-end cuisine as chefs look to achieve similar firsts for their restaurants. We may even see the rollout of cultured meat in some select experiential, high-end retail.

Fermentation Powers Growth in Exciting New Consumer-Facing Products

One of the of most exciting areas in the future of food is microbial fermentation. High-volume production of interesting new biomass proteins such as mycelium-based meat replacements and the arrival of animal-free proteins, fats and other compounds created using precision fermentation helped illustrate why the Good Food Institute called fermentation the third leg of the alternative protein market.

Looking forward, you can expect lots of new products to debut powered by precision fermentation in 2021. MeliBio, a maker of bee-free honey, expects to debut their first product in 2021, while Clara Foods plans to release its animal-free egg this year as well, and I expect to see more companies like Brave Robot rise up and offer new products built around precision fermented food platforms created by companies like Perfect Day.

CRISPR and Gene-Edited Food See Accelerated Product Pipelines

There was big news in the CRISPR and gene-edited food realm in December when the USDA proposed a change in the regulatory oversight of gene-edited animals for human consumption. The organization proposed that they take over oversight responsibility for approving gene-edited animal products from the FDA which, in 2018, famously declared that gene-edited animals should be regulated in the same manner as drugs.

Under a new USDA regulatory framework, the organization is proposing a fairly light regulatory approach to animals compared to the previous oversight of the FDA, which in turn could speed up time to market for new products. While there has been lots of focus on CRISPR-derived future food innovation, I expect changes to US regulatory oversight of gene-edited animal products to create a wave of new interest in developing CRISPR-based product lines from both startups and established food product companies.

Finally, the US may not be the only market to see a change in oversight for gene-edited food. The UK is looking to extract itself from the heavier-handed oversight of the EU post-Brexit, and some in Europe are suggesting that the EUs classification of all gene-edited food as GMO might be overbroad and need adjusting.

3D Food Printing Moves Beyond the Cake

While 3D food printing has largely been relegated to the world of confections and cake decorating, a world with food replicators from the pages of science fiction novels seems to be inching closer to reality.

Companies like Redefine Meat are making high-volume plant-based meat printers and plan to have meat in supermarkets in a year, while others like Meat-Tech are showing off prototypes of cultured meat printers. One of the challenges for food printing will be scaling the technology to make it quicker, something Novameat is working on as it begins to enter commercial rollout phase of its plant-based meat printing technology. On the consumer front, while I dont expect the food printers to start printing out Jamie Oliver recipes this year, companies like Savoreat are working on commercializing products for the professional space with the end-goal of eventually creating a home consumer food printer like the one you might see in a show like Upload.

Finally, these advances and technologies do not happen in a vacuum. The future of food is reliant on a multitude of new innovations and technologies. CRISPR, precision fermentation and 3D food printing are just some of the tools being interwoven and utilized together to help bring innovative new products to cultured, plant-based and other emerging food markets.

While we dont know what 2021 will hold for us with any certainty, what we can be certain of is that progress in these important building blocks for the future of food will continue to march forward.

What It Was Like to Participate in Modernas COVID-19 Vaccine Trial – VICE

To demonstrate their confidence in COVID-19 vaccination program, top American health officials including Dr. Anthony Fauci last month rolled up their sleeves and got their first dose of the Moderna vaccine on live television. Millions more in the United States and abroad are expected to do the same in the coming weeks to acquire protection against the virus that has killed more than 1.8 million people globally and wrecked economies.

The rollout is possible in part because of tens of thousands of people who volunteered to take part in fast-tracked trials to verify the effectiveness and safety of COVID-19 vaccines.

VICE World News spoke with Jason Zhang, a 26-year-old Chinese-American bioengineering PhD graduate who participated in Modernas clinical trial during the summer, to find out what it was like. Zhang, who is in South Korea on vacation and to learn Korean, also shared the moment during the trial when he went, Oh my god, do I need to go to the hospital?

VICE World News: How did you know about the clinical trial?Jason Zhang: I remember I was browsing through Facebook in June or July and saw the ads looking for participants in the Modernas COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial. And I was like: What is the harm in signing up and just putting in my basic information? After I signed up, around the end of July, I got a phone call from them asking me my availability for participating in the clinical trial. Back then, I was really excited to participate.

What were the reactions of your parents?Ive never been in a clinical trial before. My parents were very worried as Asian parents, or any parents in the world, do. I do remember that before participating in the trial, I talked to my family about the trial. My parents said: Why do you want to do the vaccine? Your life is very precious. Its okay if other people take the vaccine. We really want you to stay safe.

Why did you take part in the trial?One of the big things that motivated me to take part in the trial is how much the virus has affected everyones life and how disruptive it has been. I think its helping us move on.

I did a lot of research into understanding what the vaccines are and what the side effects are. Researchers did publish a paper after conducting a first-in-human Phase 1 clinical trial in the New England Journal of Medicine. Because Im in the biology field, I decided to read up on the paper and they listed their side effects and what people experienced. So I thought that It wasnt anything super harmful and also was reading about how the vaccine works.

There are two major mRNA (messenger RNA) vaccines, one developed by Pfizer and the other by Moderna. (To trigger an immune response, many vaccines put a weakened or inactivated germ into our bodies. Not mRNA vaccines. Instead, they teach our cells how to make a proteinor even just a piece of a proteinthat triggers an immune response inside our bodies.)

I thought that it was both an exciting time to help make this new technology prove that its effective for infectious disease. And understanding how this technology has a lot of benefits in terms of cost, versatility, and safety.

I thought benefits outweigh the risks and thats why I decided to participate in the trial.

Were you not afraid of getting infected?In terms of getting infected, there were some vaccines in the past used as a dead virus. I believe the polio vaccine in the 1950s that used an inactivated form of the virus. And there were some manufacturing problems in the 1950s where some people actually got the polio virus instead of getting only the dead virus. And thats allowed for problems.

But this mRNA technology you are only getting genetic information and a genetic blueprint for one of the most important proteins of the coronavirus. So since youre only getting like one small portion out of maybe eleven proteins. I think on coronavirus that therefore youre not getting the whole thing. Theres a low possibility that youre going to get the live virus accidentally.

Understanding that technology made me more confident that Im not going to experience anything too bad, reading the paper in identifying the side effects, and also because Im relatively young that I didnt have to worry too much that Im going to have the severe symptoms from COVID-19.

Can you take us through the process?For both Moderna and Pfizer, you have to take two shots. For the Moderna one, I took the first shot in August and the second shot in September. And for both those appointments, they drew your basic vitals, blood pressures, height, and weight. They gave me a COVID-19 test, drew my blood, and then gave me an experimental vaccine. Note that there are two groups: there are some who get the control of the placebo and who actually get the vaccine.

So we dont know who gets the actual vaccine. But Im pretty sure that I got the actual vaccine because I got some COVID-like symptoms for a night after my second shot. I got the test vaccine and then after that I was in the waiting room for 30 minutes and for the week after getting the vaccine every day I had to put in my health information on a mobile app and also took my temperature. So that happened for both the first and second visit.

On the first visit, I didnt really feel that much besides maybe pain at the injection site a little bit. But at this after the second visit, after getting the second shot, I developed some COVID-like symptoms. So I felt like I had a fever but when I took my temperature I didnt really have a fever. I felt fatigued. And also the most prominent thing was that I got chills like my teeth were clattering and my body was so shaking. It wasnt like seizure level shaking but I felt a shaking and that lasted for about five minutes. At some point, I thought: Oh my god, do I need to go to the hospital?. But it only lasted for five minutes and after that night, I didnt feel any more COVID-like symptoms. So I thought I got the actual vaccine.

The most prominent thing was that I got chills like my teeth were clattering and my body was so shaking.

How did the vaccine change your life? Are you still wearing a face mask?First of all, vaccines are not 100 percent effective. Theres no drug that is 100 percent effective. But its still actually that vaccines have one of the highest effectiveness. Although media reports on the news that the Moderna vaccine has 94 to 95 percent effective, its still the preliminary data and theres five percent who are not effective. So even after I took the vaccine, I still wear a mask because Im not sure that Im actually immune to COVID-19.

Secondly, even if youre immune to COVID-19, you could still spread the virus. You wouldnt get sick yourself but you do have a possibility that you could still spread the virus. The likelihood of your spread probably decreases, but the data is still to be seen for that.

So I dont think my life has changed too much after getting the vaccine. I still wear a mask, try to do social distancing, and wash my hands a lot. I think all of those are necessary in order for us to get over COVID-19. Maybe I feel a little bit more confident to go outside than other average people. I do feel I have immunity but I also understand that even if I have immunity I can still spread it so I should still be very conscious of other people.

What do you think about the anti-vaccine movement?Ive definitely heard about the controversial people. I think the huge portion of the anti vaccine movement talks about how vaccines can cause autism. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says theres no link between vaccines and autism.)

As a scientist, our responsibility is to communicate these new technologies. I feel responsible to communicate the science and to educate people about how vaccines are made and how vaccines are going to affect you and the pros and cons of vaccines.

Since you came to South Korea, what have you discovered?Theres a definitely huge cultural difference in terms of how different countries are dealing with COVID-19. I think East Asian countries are generally doing very well in terms of having people wear a face mask and doing social distancing. And everyone is very conscientious of each other about cleanness. I would say 99 percent of people in South Korea wear masks while in the United States maybe like 60 or 70 percent of people wear masks. I think California has a higher percentage than lots of different places in the United States. That was a big difference is how much people are more careful and have diligence in terms of COVID-19.

Chinese researchers discover new anti-aging gene therapy – The Star Online

BEIJING, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- For the first time, a genome-wide CRISPR-based screening technology has identified a new driver of cellular senescence. It can form part of new strategies to delay aging and prevent aging-associated diseases, Chinese researchers said.

By screening and identifying more than 100 genes responsible for the aging of human cells, the research team demonstrated that knocking out, or disabling, some genes by CRISPR can discourage the aging of human mesenchymal precursor cells (hMPCs). Among the genes that lead to senility, and KAT7 (a histone acetyltransferase), is one of the catalysts for aging.

Knocking out KAT7 has been proven effective in alleviating cellular senescence in the team's experiments, said Zhang Weiqi, a researcher at the Beijing Institute of Genomics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The scientists managed to reduce the proportion of the senescent cells in the livers of aged mice and prolonged the lifespan of physiologically aged mice and those with progeria.

The novel gene therapy, based on disabling a single gene or using KAT7 inhibitors, could extend mammal life. It could also slow down the aging of human liver cells. It suggests a massive potential for its application in translational medicine against human aging.

The study was published on Thursday in Science Translational Medicine online.

Its an undeniable truth that aging is inevitable. Isnt it? What if almost everything weve been taught about aging is wrong? What if we could change how long we live? In other words, could we choose our longevity by having better healthspan?

Statistics show that the age of our community is rising, especially in the developed world. In 2017, one in eight people worldwide was aged 60 and over. In 2050, older people are projected to account for one in five people globally. So, by 2050, this group will be around two billion people.

The most rapid increase in the 60+ population is occurring in the developing world. It is expected to show a 225% jump between 2010 and 2050.

In our youth, the issue of aging wasnt something we lost sleepover. Our energy levels could withstand anything. We woke up feeling fresh and ready to take on the day. We even indulged in a double-cheese pizza didnt result in our picking up a very resistant 3kg, seemingly overnight.

However, over time, the reality of aging kicks in. Now, science reveals that our lifespan will be determined 70% by our lifestyle and 30% by genetics.

Scientists such as Australian-born David Sinclair, a leading researcher in the field of aging at Harvard Medical School in the US, believes youthfulness can also be reset in the body, using epigenetic reprogramming. He says: Soon we will be able to tweak cells in a particular way that the central nervous system behaves as if it were young again. This is an exciting moment in time for the science of longevity. Researchers are on the verge of understanding the process of aging and how to create drugs that promote extended healthy longevity.

Lifespan refers to how long a person lives, from birth to death. Healthspan, on the other hand, is about how many of those years were lived in complete health. It describes how long we are able to function without the assistance of others, in the absence of chronic disease and frailty.

Dr. Craige Golding, a specialist physician and pioneer of aging medicine in South Africa explains: I always say to my patients, if theyre going to get older, they not only want the absence of diseases like cancer, dementia, Alzheimers, but they also want to have good mobility, good vision, and good memory. [Integrative medicine is about] incorporating many modalities, not just fighting to age. Its about looking at the person holistically, not just treating a diagnosis.

More often than not, a patient is labeled with a diagnosis, given a bunch of pharmaceuticals, and sent home. However, in holistic or integrative medicine, we look at the person as a whole. How is their diet? How is their lifestyle? Are they exercising? Are they sleeping well and managing their stress levels? What supplements are they taking? With lifestyle and supplement changes, one can often reverse these kinds of chronic conditions. Thats where my passion grew for integrative medicine because as a physician in private practice, I realized that I wasnt helping my patients with chronic diseases enough.

There are so many associated diseases when it comes to aging, he explains. When you combat these mechanisms and understand them, you can prevent many diseases.

Glycation takes place between reduced sugar and proteins, lipids and nucleic acids, wherein reactive carbonyl groups of a reducing sugar react with free amino groups of proteins to form an unstable Schiff base. Advanced glycation end products are formed through this reaction.

Telomeres are the caps at the end of chromosomes that protect the cells. These wear down as you age until they are so short that they cant protect your cells.

Golding explains that, in his practice, there is a test called a telomere link or teloyears. The longer the link, the younger you are biologically and the longer you will probably live.

So lets say youre 60 years old. Youre significantly overweight. You have early signs of Type-2 diabetes. Youre eating poorly, youre not exercising, and youre stressed out. Generally, in that scenario, your telomere length is going to be very short. This means your lifespan is probably going to be shortened significantly. Once your telomeres disappear, your cells can no longer divide. You enter a state called cellular kinesthesis, where you cant replicate your cells anymore. Thats one marker of what you can do to know your telomere length, and with lifestyle interventions such as proper diet, taking good supplements, sleep, exercise, and managing your stress, you can actually extend your telomere length, whatever your age. Your hormones, genes, social interactions all of these things play a role, and the lifestyle components are very important.

Astragalus membranaceus (AST) is a plant-based compound that demonstrates, in labs, immunomodulatory, antioxidative stress and anti-aging effects which are associated with extending longer telomeres, thus extending lifespan.

By the time one is middle-aged, levels of NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) have fallen to 50%, with resulting loss of sirtuin and PARP activity.

PARP inhibitors are a group of pharmacological inhibitors of the enzyme poly ADP ribose polymerase (PARP). They are developed for multiple indications, including the treatment of heritable cancers. Sirtuins are a family of histone deacetylases that seem to regulate oxidative stress and damage to DNA, as well as organismal lifespan. Compelling research shows that NAD+ has a unique ability to protect tissues, induce DNA repair, and increase lifespan. It has long been known that NAD+ plays an important role in transferring energy released from glucose and fatty acids to the mitochondria, so that it can be converted into cellular energy.

Recent studies have revealed that the decline in NAD+ levels causes aging-related disorders, and therapeutic approaches increasing cellular NAD+ prevent these disorders in animal models.

Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) has been shown to mitigate many aging-related dysfunctions.

Senescent cell production occurs throughout life and plays beneficial roles in a variety of physiological and pathological processes. This includes embryogenesis, wound healing, host immunity, and tumor suppression.

Meanwhile, throughout life, the steady accumulation of senescent cells in the body with age also has an adverse consequence that leads to age-related death. Senescent cells dont divide or support the tissues of which they are part. Instead, they emit a range of potentially harmful chemical signals that encourage nearby cells to enter into the same senescent state.

Autophagy (the natural process in the body of removing damaged cells, and thereby regenerating newer ones) was originally thought to suppress cellular senescence by removing damaged macromolecules or organelles. Now, recent studies also indicate that autophagy promotes cellular senescence by facilitating the synthesis of senescence-associated secretory proteins. As a result, a different strategy to remove the accumulation of senescent cells is needed.

A new class of drugs, known as senolytics, focuses on the destruction of these stubborn death-resistant cells from the body to reduce inflammation and improve tissue function.

While scientists are looking for more powerful synthetic drugs, Golding incorporates two of the most powerful natural senolytics in his senescent cell removal program. These are fisetin and quercetin. Fisetin is a plant flavonoid found in fruits, mostly in strawberries. Quercetin is a flavonol pigment found in fruits and vegetables, with its highest concentration found in capers. It has antioxidant properties that work to protect the body from free radicals and oxidative stress and is considered to be a more powerful antioxidant than vitamin C, vitamin E or beta carotene.

Resveratrol is an everyday maintenance program against senescent cells. Its a known activator of SIRT1, which slows aging, and has been demonstrated to inhibit mTOR activity and cellular senescence.

Mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) is a signaling pathway heavily linked to the aging process.mTOR is stimulated by nutrients and growth factors, and inhibited by stress, to ensure that cells grow only during favorable conditions.

As with most healthspan-related advice, caloric restriction is advised. Fasting and a reduction of calorie intake is implicated with mTOR inhibition. The two most popular options are a small feeding window (four hours per day) or 24-hour fasts two to three times per week.

The SIRT1 gene is a multifunctional protein deacetylase that plays important roles in cellular pathways including longevity, metabolism, cellular senescence, genome maintenance, DNA repair, and inflammation. Thus, the loss of NAD+ has direct and indirect consequences on multiple cellular endpoints. Ultimately, depletion of intracellular NAD+ alters the NAD+/SIRT1 axis and leads to defects in mitochondrial homeostasis, ROS production, DNA repair, and cell survival.

It has consistently been shown that the loss of activity from the NAD+/SIRT1 axis also inhibits mitophagy (the selective degradation of mitochondria by autophagy).

Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) and NR, a key NAD+ precursor intermediate which decreases with age in mammals, is an efficient therapy against age-associated diseases. Research has further demonstrated that NMN activates Sirtuin1 (SIRT1), which is a NAD enhancer.

Proteostasis is the concept that there are competing and integrated biological pathways within cells that control the biogenesis, folding, trafficking, and degradation of proteins present within and outside the cell. One of the results of a loss of NAD+ as a person gets older is a loss of proteostasis, causing havoc on the system.

Once again, NMN and/or NR is an efficient therapy against age-associated diseases, including loss of proteostasis.

Inflammation drives all diseases, and it can ignite a long list of disorders. This can includearthritis, asthma, atherosclerosis, blindness, cancer, diabetes, and, quite possibly, autism and mental illness.

In clinical practice, we can do a simple test, called a C-reactive protein, on the blood, says Golding. Then we can intervene with simple supplements, such as curcumin.

This causes cancers, senescent cells and tumors, and accelerates aging. mTOR is the master anabolic regulator that organizes many other nutrient sensors, such as insulin, leptin and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), a hormone that supports growth development, healing, muscle-building and bone strengthening, depending on what the body needs.

Because mTOR is stimulated by insulin, growth factors, blood factors, phosphatidic acids and oxidative processes, when we eat, its best to avoid animal proteins and lots of processed sugars.

Dietary additions such as resveratrol and metformin have been shown to inhibit mTOR upstream. Metformin isnt available in stores, so ask your medical doctor for a prescription. Dont forget that resveratrol should betransandwhitein color.

Rapamycin supplementation has also shown promise with mTOR, but due to the serious side-effects, its not recommended.

This results in sarcopenia, loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength. It can also lead to catabolism of lean tissue and muscle disorders. This can accelerate premature aging and make you prone to other metabolic diseases. Because the body and all the cells consist of protein, which requires the presence of anabolic precursors and building blocks, you need mTOR and amino acids for existence and DNA repair.
