Welcome back to another edition of The Anatomy of An Inning. My name is Jacob Roy, and I pretend to know pitching better than the pitchers themselves. If youre new here or need a reminder of what this is all about, I take an inning from the previous week or so and break it down, one pitch at a time. Each pitch should have a purpose, Im looking at each of them individually to try to go beyond the box score and tell the full story.

Lets go to Sunday, April 14th. The Red Sox bullpen is shorthanded, and they need multiple innings from Justin Slaten to get back in the win column. He enters the seventh inning after getting a quick double play to end the sixth.

Although Slaten is in his first Major League season, its actually his second time seeing OHoppe. The first time, he struck him out on three pitches, including two incredibly ugly swings on sweepers in the dirt. OHoppe is a fairly aggressive hitter, but he does struggle with pitches down in the zone, so Id expect more sweepers from Slaten.

Slaten starts with a cutter on the inside edge for called strike one. Against a righty, youd like to see this down and away, but OHoppe is taking all the way, so well take the free strike. 0-1.

Heres the sweeper he was able to fool OHoppe with twice in their last meeting. This one stays up in the zone, and OHoppe, although out in front, is able to poke it to left field for a lead-off base hit.

Adell is another free-swinger with tons of strikeouts in his game. He whiffs on just about everything, but breaking balls give him extra trouble (47.1% whiff rate in 2023).

Sweeper below the zone for a swing and miss. Given the swing, Id keep throwing it until he proves he can lay off.

Beautifully executed. Do it again.

Here, Slaten tries to elevate with the four-seamer, but misses his spot and leaves it below the zone. Its far enough below the zone that theres no harm done. Id go back to the sweeper.

Theres another sweeper, and Adell lays off. At 2-2, this is an interesting spot. Adell may feel that hes earned a fastball after spitting on the pitch in the dirt. That makes this the perfect spot to throw another sweeper low and away.

Alright, this works. After Adell takes two pitches below the zone, Slaten tries to execute what we saw Kutter Crawford do a few weeks ago. Hes expecting Adell to continue to take any pitch down in the zone as he reads sweeper, so he wants to throw his four-seamer down and away for called strike three. He doesnt hit his spot, but the pitch ties up Adell who grounds out to third for the first out.

Neto is another hitter Slaten has faced this season once already. The first at-bat ended in a strikeout, with every pitch coming in below the zone.

First pitch cutter that misses high for ball one.

Yikes, this could have been bad. Neto stays back on the sweeper that stays inside and pulls it down the line. Fortunately, it goes foul to even the count.

Much better. Slaten goes back to the sweeper, getting it to the glove side, and Neto is out in front this time as he pops it up weakly for the second out, keeping the runner at second base.

Nothing to see here, just know that Slaten once again missed with his fastball and hit Rendon in the shoulder. Still two outs, just get the next guy.

Again, Slaten has seen Rengifo once this season, also striking him out with exclusively off-speed pitches. With the way the defense has played in recent days, a strikeout would be great to end the inning, but any out works.

Heres a 0-0 cutter that misses outside for ball one.

Beautiful back-foot sweeper for strike one. Rengifo is well out in front, tipping his hand hes looking for a fastball. As such, Id do what Slaten did in their last meeting and stick with the breaking balls.

Heres another sweeper that Rengifo fouls off for strike two. Rengifo is more prepared for this one, fouling it straight back. With two strikes, Id go away from the sweeper after Rengifo appeared prepared for it, and instead throw either a cutter up and in, or a high fastball.

Slaten goes back to the sweeper and Rengifo isnt interested. Now, Slaten finds himself in the same position he was in with Jo Adell. Given that Rengifo is a decent fastball hitter and seemed to be looking for a fastball earlier in the count, I wouldnt throw the low fastball looking for a called strike. If Slaten throws something in the top half of the zone, Rengifo will likely read fastball. For that reason, I like the cutter up and inside to jam him and get out of the inning.

Heres the first curveball of the outing, but it only goes about 59 feet and its not enticing to the hitter. With the count full, and Mike Trout on deck, Slaten should throw whatever he feels comfortable throwing for a competitive strike. He hasnt commanded his fastball well this inning; Id expect a sweeper.

And there it is. Its not the best sweeper hes thrown, but it catches the zone in a tough spot and all Rengifo can do is roll over it for the ground ball.

Justin Slaten has been a key piece of the Red Sox bullpen thus far. In this outing, he didnt have great command of his fastball. Fortunately, the sweeper is his best pitch, returning a 40% whiff rate so far this season. As long as hes keeping the sweeper down, he should continue to get whiffs, strike hitters out, and provide lockdown innings in relief.

Shonda Rhimes is opening up about why she has taken a step back from social media amid the unprecedented success of Grey's Anatomy.

With the hit ABC medical drama in its historic 20th season, the Emmy-nominated show creator, 54, told The Sunday Times that she has seen a shift in the fanbase since the series began in 2005.

Social media changed, she shared. Fans have passionate feelings, and I was always fine with that. I understand that the characters felt like their friends. They were my imaginary friends too. Thats why I was writing them. And I think people just had very strong feelings about what happened with their friends.

She then took a pause, adding, But then it became weird.

The mother of three revealed that she requested a police car to be parked outside her house for a week following Greys Anatomy season finales due to death threats from angry fans.

They got mean, she said of her decision. And you never knew who was going to really take offense in the wrong way.

In fact, she took additional measures including hiring private 24-hour security at her Los Angeles home because people are dangerous and strange.

However, the showrunner who is a mom to Harper, 21, Emerson Pearl, 11, and Beckett, 10 also discussed the mental toll of fearing for her personal safety.

I wanted to just be able to walk out my front door and hang out with my kids and not be worried. I would lay awake at night with stress, she explained.

She admitted the experience affected a lot of things, adding, I had some very helpful friends whod had similar experiences, who were able to give me a lot of perspective, and who were adamant that if you cant live normally then youre not going to be able to live.

She has since moved out of Los Angeles to a state she wont name.

Earlier this month, Rhimes celebrated Grey's Anatomy being renewed for season 21, extending its record as the longest-running primetime medical drama and the networks longest-running primetime scripted series.

This picture was taken in 2015, she shared of a throwback photo of the cast during the celebration for their 250th episode. To still be on your screens, in your living rooms, and in your hearts almost ten years later - words cannot express my gratitude.

Greys was something I made up 20+ years ago, and I am so incredibly proud that its been picked up for its 21st season, she continued. This honestly could not be possible without you guys..caring about the stories I tell, the talented cast, writers, and crew. Wow.

Tom Nugent, Elnora, Ind., made do with a grain center erected roughly 30 years ago for a long time. When it was clear his son Thomas would be farming for the long haul, Nugent decided to invest in a serious grain center expansion.

In his late 60s, Nugent pulled the trigger very late in 2022, committing to invest in an expansion project with a price tag north of $1 million.

I had two main goals: adding bushels of storage capacity and adding a larger pit so we could unload and get back to the field faster, he says.

Nugent accomplished both goals. The new grain bin holds 145,000 bushels, plus the new wet holding hopper tank holds 10,000 bushels. They can dump a full semiload of corn or soybeans into the pit in a matter of minutes and be off to the field again.

The large pit probably looks like a Cadillac-type system, but I wanted to be sure we could unload quickly so we could keep the combine moving in the field, and not have it waiting on trucks, Nugent explains. With 1-foot-thick walls, it took a lot of concrete, but I am confident that it was done right and will last over the long haul.

Nugent doesnt hesitate when asked if hes glad he pulled the trigger and enlarged the grain system. Yes, I am very glad I did, he responds. I should have done it at least five years sooner, and it would have been cheaper. But material prices arent going down, and it would have been more expensive if I waited another five years.

Because the new 145,000-bushel bin wasnt finished until the 2023 season was almost over, the Nugents didnt get a true test of how it would perform during harvest. However, they did fill the bin with dry corn later, and it passed its inaugural test.

This fall, grain coming out of the field that needs drying will dump into the new pit, travel up the new leg into the wet holding bin, and then enter the dryer. The grain from my dryer unloads into the older leg, Nugent says. From there, it is spouted to the GSI VersaLoop conveyor that takes it to the top of the new bin.

Nugent notes that the VersaLoop is rated at only 4,000 bushels per hour, and that is the rated unload speed of the dryer, too.

We have an ammeter on it so we can make sure we dont overload it if we use it to transfer corn from another bin, he says. I dont anticipate running many bushels through the loop, only during drying season.

One factor in Nugents planning was that they typically dry far fewer bushels today than in the past.

Looking at the big picture, thanks to tiling we have done here that helps us plant earlier, which in turn leads to dryer corn in the field in the fall, it shortens the drying season, Nugent explains. Or it allows us to plant slightly longer-season varieties with higher yield potential.

We will need to upgrade it at some point, but not now, he says. Our priorities were storage capacity and faster unloading from the field.

Here are key points about Nugents grain center expansion project:

More storage capacity. They added a 145,000-bushel bin that is 60 feet in diameter and 15 rings tall, plus a 10,000-bushel wet holding tank that is 18 feet in diameter and 16 rings tall.

Large pit. The new pit is 30 feet long, 10 feet wide and 12 feet deep, with two U-trough 16-inch augers. It holds about 1,300 bushels, which is more than a semiload.

Overhead doors. The main part of the L-shaped building over the unloading pit is 34 by 20 feet, with doors on automatic openers on each end. If we had built the building 4 feet longer, the door tracks would not be offset, but it is not a big deal, Nugent says.

Lighting for unloading. Lights inside the pit help reduce shadows that would occur when unloading semis at night. There are also pairs of LED lights on each side of the pit partway up the shed walls, but below the height of the overhead doors when open.

Bucket elevator and tower. Partly due to where bins were located and partly for more strength, Nugent opted for a tower to support the bucket elevator instead of a traditional guy-wire arrangement. The tower is 12 by 12 feet and 121 feet tall. The bucket elevator extends below ground level to the bottom of the pit, reducing degree of incline needed on augers. Nugent believes that will extend wear life.

Grain monitoring and aeration. Nugent opted to install the GSI GrainVue automatic grain aeration controller. Linked to weather instruments at the bin site, it aerates grain when necessary. Seven temperature cables inside the new bin report temperature at 4-foot intervals within the grain mass. Moisture cables are also an option.

Cost for this system was about 1% of total cost of the project. There is also a $200-per-year subscription fee so data reaches the cloud. Data and graphs can be viewed on devices, including iPhones, from anywhere.

The controller is a no-brainer, Nugent says. You can program a preferred moisture range for it to operate, and one can re-wet grain and gain bushels. It is more economical for larger bins, and occasionally you may have to replace a cable. But it also offers peace of mind.

For several seasons, Meredith and Derek's fraught romance defined the show's narrative. Derek, who Meredith and her best friend Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) dub "McDreamy," is initially getting out of an on-the-rocks marriage. Meredith tells Derek to choose her and, eventually, he does, but it certainly takes awhile for the two surgeons to get on the same page, as evidenced by Meredith and Derek's wild relationship timeline. For a few seasons, Meredith and Derek were Grey's Anatomy's most stable pair, but things took a turn in season 10, and that fallout is still defining Meredith Grey's love life.

Grey's Anatomy season 20 continues Meredith's relationship with Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman), a world-class transplant surgeon who previously worked with Meredith during her brief stint at Minnesota's Mayo Clinic. After receiving a kidney transplant himself, Nick flies out to Grey Sloan to retrieve donor organs. After Nick collapses, his medical mishap creates something of a bonding experience for him and Meredith. When Cristina Yang leaves Grey's Anatomy in season 10, she reminds Meredith that Derek isn't "the sun." Meredith's life doesn't have to revolve around Derek's ambitions, and hers should be equally important. It's a conversation that plagued Meredith and Derek's marriage for the bulk of season 10, with Meredith admitting that they'll always fall into the intern-attending dynamic of when they first met. Cristina's parting words strengthen Meredith's resolve; when Derek is offered a high-powered, cutting-edge neuro job in Washington D.C., Meredith tells him to take it, though she'll stay behind in Seattle with the kids.

The surgeon is proud of her work and her research; if prioritizing her partner's goals means taking away from her own, Meredith won't compromise. While Meredith and Nick might have worked when things were less serious when things were easy and fun season 20 proves they aren't a solid endgame.

With Ellen Pompeo's role on Grey's Anatomy significantly reduced, it feels unnecessary to prioritize Meredith's love life, especially when her groundbreaking (and very personal) Alzheimer's research is the more significant thread. In season 20, Meredith pulls Derek's sister, neuro surgeon Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone), into her research, setting up a clear-cut reason for Pompeo's guest appearances. If anything, Meredith's romantic tribulations cement the fact that romance will never eclipse her work. Clearly, the series wants to give Meredith a "happy ending," so it should embrace her success as a single person, mother, and surgeon in Grey's Anatomy season 21.

When you see it from the angle shown on the live coverage, you don't really understand where Joshua Kimmich comes from.

The build-up is neat, and you can see that: Leroy Sane receiving a standard Kimmich pass out wide, immediately upping the pace as he cuts inside, skinning Gabriel Martinelli on the outside. You can see Sane squaring up Takehiro Tomiyasu and lifting a ball across the face of the goal that David Raya claws at. You can see Raphael Guerreiro, given way too much room by Ben White, take a touch to take it out of his feet and swings in an interesting looking ball... and the next thing you see is a flash of red and white, and Kimmich absolutely thundering a header into the far top corner.

You already know how important the goal is: it took Bayern Munich into the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League semifinals, the goal that dumped Arsenal out of Europe. You've also already seen just how emphatic a finish it was, the purity of the connection, the wow-factor of a header thumping into goal with that force. But it's when you turn the angle a bit, look at it from a bird's eye point of view that you truly appreciate the genius of Kimmich.

Before that pass to Sane, you can see him drive inside, shape to pass to Harry Kane down the inside left... those two movements combine to pull the Arsenal shape within itself, giving Sane the space he needs.

Once he's made the pass to Sane, you can see him jog along, arcing away from goal, seemingly a harmless piece on the chess board. When Sane lifts the ball, Kimmich arcs back, innocuously entering the box along its top corner.

By now all of Arsenal's players on that side have been attracted to Sane's movement and are consequently closer to the six-yard box than they are to the edge of the box. And even as Martinelli jogs back up to recover defensive shape (with Tomiyasu remaining on Sane), Kimmich remains in the blind spot. When Guerreiro has the ball, all eyes are on him, including the three Arsenal players on that left-side of theirs - Martinelli, Tomiyasu, and Declan Rice.

Up until the point Guerreiro looks up to pass, Kimmich has made no sudden movements, drawn absolutely no attention to himself. He might as well not be there. The moment Guerreiro's left foot connects with the ball, though, Kimmich is off -- and by the time the trio have registered this movement, it's too late. All three of them may be faster than him, stronger than him, taller than him, but how do you stop someone you didn't know was there? He steals a yard over the shoulder of Martinelli, dives onto the ball... and BAM!

What makes it even more special is that it was a hugely important goal on a personal level as well. After the game, Kimmich would tell Sky Germany that the goal had felt really good. "I had to hear a lot last year, got very little support," he said. "In the end, it once again proves that hard work pays off."

With Bayern suffering their worst season domestically in over a decade (that still involves being second in the Bundesliga, by the way), Kimmich had been one of those who'd borne the brunt of criticism over the past few months. Initially playing in central midfield fans had called for his head, asking their club to drop him, to move him on. Midfield was the position that he'd always wanted to play, but it wasn't working for him at either club or country.

So both teams moved him back to right back, Bayern in late February, Germany in the last international break in March... and it clicked again. A few games in, he was already dictating games from that right back position, locking down the opposition (like he sealed Arsenal's left flank over both ties), and generally being the absolute best right back in the world.

Now he's got a tangible reward, a first Champions League non-penalty goal since Oct 2020 (against Lokomotiv Moscow) and the winner in a tight, tight semifinal where his team had been considered big underdogs. So, for the personal redemptive arc, for the pure in-game intelligence, for the belligerence of the finish, Joshua Kimmich takes our Moment of the Mid-Week.

The American medical drama series Greys Anatomy returns on March 14 for its 20th season after two years of absence from television. The cast is slightly different from the previous season, but the prominent characters remain. However, season 20 will be the first to feature Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) as the recurring character. The actress expressed her desire to experience different roles for the rest of her career, so she decided not to appear regularly in the forthcoming season and remain an executive producer.

The main cast includes Sandra Oh, Patrick Dempsey, Chandra Wilson, Justin Chambers, Katherine Heigl, T.R. Knight, Isaiah Washington, and James Pickens Jr. The only original cast members that remain in season 20 are Chandra Wilsons Miranda Bailey and Jams Pickens Jr. 's Richard Webber.

Due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023, the production of the new season was delayed, leading to a short run of 10 episodes. ABC released the first two episodes on March 14 and March 21, which continue the story from the previous season.

The new season follows the renewed storyline of Meredith, who has to reconsider her plans after going through a hard time. Every character is involved in unexpected incidents: a patients death poses a challenge for all the interns, Richard confides in Bailey, and Teddys fate is revealed.

The beginning of season 20 gained positive reception, with 5.49 million viewers in total in the first episode. According to the announced schedules, Greys Anatomy season 20 will premiere on Thursday every week from 9:00 - 10:00 p.m. ET/PT. The audience can also watch the new season on Hulu the next day.

April has already brought some of the biggest renewals of 2024: ABC's 9-1-1, just weeks after its debut on the network, was thrown a lifeline and will return for Season 8 next year; Grey's Anatomy is scrubbing in for Season 21; and The Rookiewill be back for Season 7. CBS has also had a big month, with renewals of Elsbeth,NCIS,The Neighborhood, all three FBI series, and S.W.A.T. yes, the same S.W.A.T. that was already canceled once and then brought back for what was supposed to be its final season. Warning! SPOILERS about Station 19 season 7, episode 5 ahead.

After episodes where Sully proposed and Natasha didnt give him a straight answer, Station 19 season 7, episode 5 finally managed to get them engaged and in doing so, it referenced a major Greys Anatomy seasons 10 and 11 storyline. Station 19s 100th episode included plenty of dramatic developments, but Ben and Sullys predicament that left them surrounded by fire and with little oxygen was among the most difficult, putting in danger two of Station 19s main characters. Almost losing Sully finally gave Natasha clarity regarding his marriage proposals, also explaining why she didnt seem to take them seriously before.

Sully and Natasha spent Station 19 season 6 fighting over whether to keep their relationship private, with the two torn between protecting their relationship and their careers, as Natasha being Sullys superior put them in a precarious situation. While the ballroom floor collapse in Station 19 season 6s finale endangering Natasha made Sully certain of what mattered, every time he asked Natasha to marry him in Station 19 season 7, she didnt answer clearly. Their talk in Station 19 season 7, episode 5 finally explained it had nothing to do with their love but much to do with Natashas fears.

Natasha admitted she had been stalling her relationship with Sully in Station 19 season 7, episode 5, sharing that she had been terrified that someday Sully would want her to play small. Her reveal simultaneously clarified that she really was avoiding answering Sullys proposal and why, showing that she truly loved Sully, but was also accustomed to men going back on their word. His promise to never be so stupid and try to make her play or feel small essentially made it possible for his proposal to be enthusiastically accepted by Natasha right after he promised her.

The worries plaguing Natasha that Sully didnt know about fully mirrored a Greys Anatomy season 10 story that completely degenerated by season 11, almost destroying Meredith and Dereks relationship right before Dereks death. Indeed, by Greys Anatomy season 10, Derek had promised to take a step back in his career to focus on his and Merediths family so that she could have her moment to shine and progress her career. However, his brain sensors research with Callie and his presidential brain mapping initiative made Derek go back on his word, causing him to put his career first once again.

Before accepting, Derek refused the US presidents offer twice despite not wanting to, choosing his family only because he had promised Meredith. In return, this made Derek take out his anger on Meredith and those closest to him, making them miserable because he resented Meredith as she refused to stall her career to follow him. This fight continued from Greys Anatomy season 10 to 11, and it would have destroyed them had Derek not died. With Natashas worries revolving around Meredith and Dereks central problem in Greys Anatomy seasons 10 and 11, Station 19 season 7 essentially reversed their story.

The power disparity between Meredith and Derek was often at the center of their story, but they never explicitly considered that issues practicalities before season 10, with Greys Anatomy instead focusing on their unyielding love. Sully learning the prerequisite for which Natasha would consider marriage thus makes her priorities evident, making the problem that arose between Meredith and Derek much more unlikely to appear between them. By clarifying that love wasnt necessarily enough, also needing a clear and explicit understanding of their priorities, Station 19 season 7 made Sully and Natashas relationship have a firmer start than Meredith and Dereks.

I remember actors arriving at work shaken because theyd been chased by paparazzi, which felt really weird for a TV show that wasnt Friends, Rhimes, 54, recalls. I always says that if you watched Greys every Thursday night, you spend more time with Meredith and Cristina as your friends than you did with anybody else in your life.

Wilson, who has played Dr. Miranda Bailey since the beginning, adds, [Early on] fan interactions would have to come from the mail that would show up at the studio. And that was how you knew that somebody was relating to the character, and then you send back a note. But with social media, there was the immediacy of being able to talk with the fans and hear what theyre personally interested in.

Rhimes and the cast saw that the real-life impact of the shows storylines. Camilla Luddington, who has starred as Jo Wilson since season 9, explains, After Silent All These Years [the season 15 episode about sexual assault] aired, within the first 48 hours of that airing [calls to] RAINNs sexual assault hotline that we gave the number out for increased by something like 43 percent.

To see that effect in the real world after we play these storylines out feels so powerful and incredible to be part of, but when were shooting it, I try not to think about all the eyes watching and just be in the moment, she adds.

James Pickens Jr, who plays Dr. Richard Webber, shares, Im most proud of how we look at Webbers whole alcoholism thing. The writers did it in a way that was so respectful, and it was able to resonate with a lot of people. I still have to this day folks who will come up and say, Ive been in the program, and your character was very inspiring for me.

The show also sparked women to follow in the footsteps of Meredith Grey and pursue a career in medicine. Ive met women whove said, Greys Anatomy made me realize that I could be a doctor, executive producer Betsey Beers says.

That people watch the show and then lots and lots and lots of young women went into science is incredible to me, and I think that its such a gift thats given back to me, Rhimes adds.

My name is Alex Garland and Im the writer director of Civil War. So this particular clip is roughly around the halfway point of the movie and its these four journalists and theyre trying to get, in a very circuitous route, from New York to DC, and encountering various obstacles on the way. And this is one of those obstacles. What they find themselves stuck in is a battle between two snipers. And they are close to one of the snipers and the other sniper is somewhere unseen, but presumably in a large house that sits over a field and a hill. Its a surrealist exchange and its surrounded by some very surrealist imagery, which is theyre, in broad daylight in broad sunshine, theres no indication that were anywhere near winter in the filming. In fact, you can kind of tell its summer. But theyre surrounded by Christmas decorations. And in some ways, the Christmas decorations speak of a country, which is in disrepair, however silly it sounds. If you havent put away your Christmas decorations, clearly something isnt going right. Whats going on? Someone in that house, theyre stuck. Were stuck. And theres a bit of imagery. It felt like it hit the right note. But the interesting thing about that imagery was that it was not production designed. We didnt create it. We actually literally found it. We were driving along and we saw all of these Christmas decorations, basically exactly as they are in the film. They were about 100 yards away, just piled up by the side of the road. And it turned out, it was a guy whod put on a winter wonderland festival. People had not dug his winter wonderland festival, and hed gone bankrupt. And he had decided just to leave everything just strewn around on a farmers field, who was then absolutely furious. So in a way, theres a loose parallel, which is the same implication that exists within the film exists within real life. You dont understand a word I say. Yo. Whats over there in that house? Someone shooting. Its to do with the fact that when things get extreme, the reasons why things got extreme no longer become relevant and the knife edge of the problem is all that really remains relevant. So it doesnt actually matter, as it were, in this context, what side theyre fighting for or what the other persons fighting for. Its just reduced to a survival.
