Your A+ in anatomy and physiology won’t improve the American health care system – Kevin MD

March 30th marks National Doctors Day a day meant to honor the immense work and impact physicians have in caring for our patients and their communities. As resident physicians, we are proud and honored to have joined this noble profession.

However, on this particular Doctors Day, we are also acutely aware that medicine isonce againat a historic crossroads. The recent waves of sweeping anti-diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) legislation threaten to undermine the critical strides our profession has made over the past decade. This begs the question: Will we stand firm in our commitment or let the meritocracy tide overtake us?

On March 19th, 2024, House Representative (3rdDistrict-North Carolina) and surgeonDr. Gregory Murphyproposed the Embracing Anti-Discrimination, Unbiased Curricula, and Advancing Truth in Education(EDUCATE) Act. The bill aims to eliminate federal funding from medical schools that continue to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion work in medicine and medical education by amending the Higher Education Act of 1965. With this bill, Congressman Murphy believes the United States medical system as a whole will become fixed by solely focusing on meritocracy when teaching and preparing the next generation of physiciansa flawed myth rooted in structural inequalities as well as centuries of racism that have robbed whole communities of resources and opportunities.

Evidence of individual exceptionalism or meritocracy falsely attributes individual success to individual effort while failing to acknowledge contributory systemic, structural, or environmental factors that make each individual unique.

This meritocratic inheritance, as described in Daniel Markovitss The Meritocracy Trap, is prevalent in medicine and used to disguise privilegethat is, being born to the right family, in the right environment, with the right connections, will lead one to find and attain the calling of being a physician.

Falling into the meritocracy trap is akin to believing the world and our lives to be a dichotomy of black and white, yes and no. As physicians, when we reflect on our own lived experiences, we know that this is simply not the case. We see the societal consequences of a meritocracy every day of our careersfrom the way some of our colleagues accomplishments have been ignored or undervalued to the numerous health disparities that continue to plague the American health care system.

Twenty years ago, the Unequal Treatment report, spearheaded by the National Institute of Health (NIH), was released to define how racial and ethnic disparities impact our health care systems costs and outcomes. This report yielded recommendations centered on increasing the number of minority health professionals, educating providers on the impact of biases in health care, and implementing initiatives centered on eliminating health disparities within hospital systems.

Now, 20 years later, despite the implementation of these recommendations, health care disparities continue to persist with harrowing consequences for minoritized and marginalized patient populations, including missed cancer diagnoses, worse pain control, and increased rates of maternal mortality.

Without providing evidence, it is easy to say that DEI initiatives are to blame when, in fact, social inequity drivers are the true culprits. Dr. Nancy Krieger, a Harvard scholar, reflected on the Unequal Treatment report, saying, Its not enough to recommend people get more exercise and eat more nutritious food if they dont have adequate green space in their neighborhood or accessible grocery stores with affordable healthy foods.

Likewise, the argument for meritocracy-centered medical education falls flat when trying to address health disparities. The lack of diversity in medical education has had ramifications in clinical medicine, including the disparate care of marginalized populationsfrom the high rate of maternal mortality among Black mothers to delayed diagnosis of cervical cancer both circumstances recently seen with Krystal Anderson andJessica Pettway, respectively.

Whether the physician was meritorious is insufficient and fails to address the crux of the problem. The harms our medical education system has inflicted on these patients are irreparable, but DEI initiatives have at least brought these issues to the forefront for our profession to try again and improve. Its been shown that physicians from racially/ethnically underrepresented groups in medicine (URiM) are more likely to serve underserved and rural communitiesthan their white counterparts.

The art and storytelling aspect of clinical medicine will always make our profession unique. However, both aspects can lead to biases that lead to the health disparities outcomes that our profession is riddled with. As Congressman Murphy noted in a prior National Doctors Day,when he highlighted the alarming physician shortage in the United States, at one point or another, everyone will need a doctor in their life. DEI initiatives aim to ensure that when that point comes, the physician taking care of you is listening, culturally sensitive, and empathic to your experiences. Now is not the time to threaten cutting funding to medical schools that are essential pipelines for the physician workforce of the near future.

As mentioned before, our profession is at a crossroads as to whether we embrace techniques that can help us solve these ever-mounting health disparities or continue to provide unequal care to certain populations. We need more than statements from our medical societies and associations to ensure DEI-centered initiatives in medicine remain in order to solve the former and fix our health care system. So, will we be swept by the tide of meritocracy, or will we hold firm to our mission and the true needs of the populations that we care for? Only time will tell.

Anatomy of a Goal: Steven Moreira bags a goal of the year candidate – Massive Report

Welcome to the Anatomy of a Goal, where following each match we dissect one goal (or near goal) from a previousColumbus Crew contest. For the ninth match of the 2024 MLS season, we look at Steven Moreiras 74th-minute goal that leveled the game and rescued a home point for the Crew on Saturday night.

Here is a look at the fantastic goal from Moreira.

Columbus took the field against their old foes, the Portland Timbers, on the heels of five straight draws and no wins since March 16. The Timbers took the lead early but the Black & Gold were able to fight back with a Cucho Hernandez goal early in the second half. Hernandez had a penalty shout that was not given and Portland used the Crews lack of focus to retake their lead. As the match dwindled, Columbus needed a bit of magic to gab the match-leveler.

Moreiras goal begins with Mohamed Farsi picking up an errant Timbers pass deep in the Black & Golds defensive territory. Darion Asprilla gives chase but Farsi is able to easily pick up the ball.

Farsi plays a short pass to Moreira who eyes Darlington Nagbe dropping back into a supportive position.

Moreira quickly plays the ball forward to Nagbe.

Nagbe takes a touch to turn the ball upfield and finds Diego Rossi with his second touch.

Rossi receives the ball and takes a touch forward to survey the Portland Timbers defensive shape.

The winger resets possession back to Nagbe and continues up the field.

Nagbe collects the ball and shifts the attack over to Rudy Camacho.

Camacho then plays a first-touch pass forward to left center-back Malte Amundsen.

Amundsen takes a touch on the ball and finds himself with four options: 1. a pass up the sideline to Yaw Yeboah; 2. continue to carry the ball forward; 3. a square pass to Nagbe; or, 4. a quick drop to Aidan Morris.

The Danish defender plays a quick pass up the flank to Yeboah . . .

. . . who uses his first touch to drop the ball back to Amundsen.

Amundsen makes his own first-touch pass toward Morris.

Morris takes a few touches forward and plays the ball right to Amundsen.

Amundsen spots Cucho Hernandez and hits a first-touch pass toward the striker.

Hernandez is taken down by Juan Mosquera and swarmed by Diego Chara.

Somehow, Hernandez regains his balance and slides the ball over to Jacen Russell-Rowe.

Russell-Rowe receives the ball and has three immediate options: 1. a diagonal pass back to Hernandez; 2. attempt to carry the ball into the goal box; or, 3. a square pass to Rossi.

Before Russell-Rowe can make a decision the ball is tackled away by Kamal Miller.

Miller keeps the ball while on the ground and touches a pass ahead toward Cristhian Paredes.

Paredes chases the ball as Amundsen sprints in to provide defensive cover.

The Timbers midfielder just beats Amundsen to the ball but ends up sending the ball right to the Black & Gold defender.

Amundsen uses his first touch to redirect the ball back toward Yeboah.

Yeboah collects the ball and drops it back to Morris.

Morris picks up his head and sees five options: 1. a pass ahead to Russell-Rowe; 2. a long ball forward to Rossi; 3. a square pass to Moreira; 4. a lay-off to Nagbe; or, 5. continue to carry the ball.

The young midfielder spies an unmarked Moreira and hits a pass right to him.

Moreira opens his hips and uses his first touch to send the ball toward the goal.

With his second touch, Moreira must decide among five options: 1. a diagonal pass to Russell-Rowe; 2. a long shot on goal; 3. a quick touch forward to Rossi; 4. carry the ball forward; or, 5. a diagonal pass to Farsi.

With the ball teed up perfectly, Moreira hits a laser beam toward James Pantemiss goal.

Pantemis is slightly blocked from getting an eye on Moreiras shot but still picks up the ball as it leaves the right center-backs foot.

Pantemis dives toward the ball but can only watch as it soars past him . . .

. . . into the back of the net!

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 20 Has A Meredith & Derek Easter Egg – Bustle

Ever since Greys Anatomy debuted in 2005, the series has been known for its buzzy, eclectic soundtrack from making mainstream hits out of alternative bops, to platforming countless artists for some of the shows most emotional moments. (Sleeping At Lasts 500 Miles cover from the shows storm two-parter in Season 9? Try not to cry on your next rewatch!)

But sometimes, the simplest flourish of the shows original score is enough to get the tears flowing, like the musical Easter egg that could be heard in Season 20s Never Felt So Alone. The next Greys Anatomy episode wont be until May 2, so this is the perfect time to catch up on the MerDer homage you might have missed the first time around.

During the Season 20 episode, Meredith is upset that her son, Bailey, became ill with appendicitis while she was away from home. As she told Dr. Webber (who helped get her back to Boston with his Catherine Fox Foundation plane), the experience brought back traumatic memories of Dereks death.

Even the best hands make mistakes: bleeding, perforations, Meredith says. Its the middle of the night. Theyre tired. Mistakes happen.

Later, Meredith told Webber that she wished she had Derek to lean on in times like this. I mean, of course I miss him, she says. Its just really only when the kids wake up in the middle of the night, and I dont have anyone to talk to.

If you listen closely during the vulnerable moment, you can hear a familiar piano melody playing in the background. Its the original music, aptly nicknamed their love theme, that has been used to score Meredith and Dereks relationship since their earliest encounters. (Yes, it even plays during the iconic Pick me, choose me, love me scene.)

As it turns out, this isnt the first time MerDers theme music popped up after Dereks death. It could be heard during the couples encounter on Merediths illness-induced dream beach in Season 17, for example.

But to have those familiar notes play at a time of reflection for Meredith is especially impactful. Like real-life memories of loved ones, the song sneaks up on fans in a quiet moment a subtle reminder that no matter how much time has passed since Dereks death, he is still very much a part of Merediths (and Greys Anatomys) story.

Its also a testament to the beloved series longevity. As the longest-running primetime medical drama in history, Greys Anatomy is able to weave in nostalgic Easter eggs that feel well-earned due to the passage of time.

Debbie Allen knows the power of Derek and Merediths love story on Grey's Anatomy.

While looking back on the fan-favorite couples 2020 reunion on the ABC medical drama in PEOPLEs new Greys Anatomy special edition issue, the actress and producer, 74, shared she was excited to see Patrick Dempsey and Ellen Pompeo, who play Derek Shepherd and Meredith Grey respectively, reunite.

How joyful it was for them to be with each other as Derek and Meredith, Allen says. Its why the show is still going strong. Its why well keep going.

As fans may recall, the series season 17 premiere featured a beach dream sequence of Meredith and her late husband Derek reuniting after she collapsed in the Grey Sloan Memorial parking lot due to the effects of COVID-19. Derek died on the show back in April 2015.

When COVID shut us down, what were we going to do? Allen shares. There was a conversation about not dealing with it. Then it was like a lightning bolt from Ellen Pompeo: We have to deal with it. And we did. I remember shooting that scene on the beach with them and how magical that was to just be with them, together again.

For his part, Dempsey, 58, told Deadline in 2020 that he hopes the cameo was a pleasant surprise for fans.

"I came across a photo that I was going to post that had Ellen and I, and I think that produced a call where I reached out to Ellen, and this was right around, the conversation was starting for season 17. And Ellens like, lets get together, I want to go over a couple things, I want to catch up," he told the outlet at the time.

"We hadnt spoken or been together for a while. It was a great opportunity to catch up and say, okay, what can we do for all the frontline responders?" continued Dempsey. "Ive been tracking what Greys had been doing with giving masks, and making sure that people had the right equipment, and it came from that place okay, what can we do to make people feel better, to give some comfort in this time of uncertainty, and thats how it began. And it was really a wonderful experience to go back, to work with [director] Debbie [Allen]."

"I think the whole atmosphere has changed, certainly working at the beach, and seeing everybody again was really a very healing process, and really rewarding, and a lot of fun," he said.

Pompeo, 54, echoed his sentiments, sharing that it felt great to reunite with her former costar.

Patrick and I have this chemistry where ... it just felt like weve known each other for a hundred years. Its like riding a bike. ... We have a dynamic thats always served us well, and I think we have a genuine affection for each other, she explained.

Dempsey told Variety in 2021 he wouldn't say no to yet another potential comeback after appearing in four episodes during season 17.

"Who knows? Never say never with this show, right?" he said when asked if there were any scenarios he could envision for the show in which Derek would once again make an appearance. "I'm glad we did it this year. And [former showrunner] Krista Vernoff did a fantastic job telling the story."

"It was just a great way to give people some hope," he added.

Does ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Really Need To Keep Bringing Back Old Characters? – Collider

The Big Picture

If you listen closely, you can hear the world collectively sigh every time Greys Anatomy gets renewed for another season. Even diehard fans of the series can admit that the series isnt the same as it once was. The quality has drastically diminished, there are like two original characters left, and the storylines are dull and lifeless in comparison to past seasons. Its not unwatchable by any means, but its definitely not as enjoyable as it used to be, which is almost as bad. The show has burnt itself out over the years, yet keeps trudging along. The dedication is admirable, but is it really worth it?

In recent seasons, the show has discovered that a surefire way to boost viewership is to bring back familiar faces. Its why we saw the return of April Kepner (Sarah Drew), why Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) had a mini-arc in Season 19, and why Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) came back for a special appearance in a recent episode. The simple fact is that fans love and miss the old characters, and the showrunners know it, so what better way to excite an audience than to bring those characters back? But the issue is that those characters dont stick around, theyre simply guest stars, and once that special episode ends were back to the regular show, which just isnt as exciting. So, is it really a good idea to bring back the old characters? Or should Greys Anatomy opt for a fresh start?

A drama centered on the personal and professional lives of five surgical interns and their supervisors.

As sad as it is to admit, Greys Anatomys recent seasons just arent on par with previous ones. Its understandable that a show as long-running as Greys Anatomy would have some ups and downs, but its become more and more noticeable that the show is sort of spinning its wheels. Especially with Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) taking a step back AKA, the Grey in Greys Anatomy the show feels off-kilter and hasnt quite found its footing again. There are still good episodes, even moments that are quite riveting, but those moments have become increasingly more scarce.

Greys seemingly has lots of content to work with. After all, theres always some crazy medical case that can be invented for the sake of an episode. But it almost feels as though the show has toned down the absurdity of its storylines. No more are the storylines featuring patients with a pole stuck through them, or teenagers who jumped into a vat of cement on a dare. Things are rather benign at Grey Sloan Memorial lately, and though Greys Anatomy would still catch some flack for these types of ridiculous storylines, it never failed to bring in curious audiences who just had to see it to believe it. Now the craziest thing we see on Greys are old characters coming back for a surprise visit. But that may be doing the show more harm than good.

Greys Anatomy has lost its fair share of characters over the seasons. Whether it be that the character dies or the actor portraying them simply decides to leave the show. One of the first major losses the show saw was when George (T.R. Knight) died at the end of Season 5. Izzie (Katherine Heigl) left the show soon after. Lexie (Chyler Leigh) and Mark (Eric Dane) died in the Season 8 plane crash. Cristina (Sandra Oh) left in Season 10, Derek (Patrick Dempsey) died in Season 11, and so on. It feels as if the show has seen more character exits than arrivals, which can shake up any TV show, no matter how stable. But when Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) left in Season 16, thats when the show really went downhill. At that point, he and Meredith were the only original interns left, so his departure left Meredith as the sole member of M.A.G.I.C left at Grey Sloan Memorial. Webber (James Pickens Jr.) and Bailey (Chandra Wilson) are now the only characters from Season 1 that are still around. (Oh, and BokHee (Kathy C. An)! Who can forget BokHee?)

Over the seasons weve seen certain characters return. Such as the aforementioned Addison Montgomery (who has her own spin-off called Private Practice), who has come back sporadically throughout the series to bestow her talents as a neonatal surgeon. Sarah Drew returned briefly and gave us the Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April endgame we had been craving. And who can forget when Meredith was in a COVID-19-induced coma and was visited by the ghosts of Derek, Lexie, Mark, and George? Obviously, as fans, it's exciting to see these characters again and see what theyve been up to since their last stint on the show, but is it really worth it in the end? On the surface it may seem like bringing back fan-favorite characters would be the perfect recipe for success for Greys Anatomy. But that success only lasts as long as the time leading up to the episode and the time it airs. Afterward, things go back to normal and all the excitement and huge moments to look forward to are gone. It feels more like a tease than anything, because we know that once the credits roll we wont be seeing that character again for a while if ever. So yeah, bringing back the old characters helps for an episode, but it isnt enough to revive the series as a whole.

Its never disappointing when Greys Anatomy brings back old characters, but if the show wants to continue moving forward and doing well for itself it needs to opt for a clean slate. Its in a weird sort of limbo state at the moment. So many of the OG characters that made the show what it is, are gone now, and yes, there are still some fan favorites who arrived later, such as Teddy (Kim Raver) and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone). But its about time Greys Anatomy makes a decision about where it wants to go. And at this point, there are really only two options that seem plausible: call it quits or enter a new era of Greys Anatomy. Greys Anatomy 2.0, if you will.

Rather than bringing back old characters in an attempt to capitalize off of its most successful seasons, Greys should start fresh with new interns and fully commit to them. The show did introduce us to a new group of interns, and for a while it seemed like maybe this would be the turning point the show needed, but that quickly proved not to be the case. Characters such as Bailey, Richard, and Amelia can still stick around, the show doesnt need to completely rid itself of its OG characters, but it needs to better commit to the new ones as well. Audiences will never be able to resonate with the new characters if theyre not given the proper screentime and character development. Its probably the shows biggest flaw, in how it introduces what could be really interesting characters but doesnt do much of anything with them and instead focuses on the characters we already know because thats what the show thinks we want. In reality, moving away from those characters wouldnt be a bad thing so long as those we were focusing on instead were just as fleshed out and interesting.

Greys Anatomy used to be so good at introducing new characters with fleshed-out backstories and colorful personalities. Now? Everyone seems dull and there isnt much to latch onto. Theres the occasional character, sure, but none are super memorable and thats rather unfortunate. The show not only needs a revamp with characters though, it also needs to go back to its roots and find that nostalgic balance of drama and comedy that early Greys Anatomy had. Thats what made the show unique. It could take your heart and stomp on it with some of the most gut-wrenching storylines. But it could also make you laugh a scene later. The storylines in general need to be juicier too. Bring back the disaster episodes, bring back the medical cases so ridiculous you cant h
elp but chuckle despite your better judgment, bring back the cheesy love confessions in the scrub room. Its what fans really want.

Kim Raver Says Tensions Will Reach a 'Boiling Point' on 'Grey's Anatomy's Season 20 Finale (Exclusive)

Kim Raveris teasing big things ahead onGrey's Anatomy.

ET spoke to the actress amid the show's 20th season, and she promised that even though the installment was shortened due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the drama is still as intense.

"This finale of season 20 just doesn't disappoint. It's another classic Grey's Anatomy," she said. "There's so many things that come to a boiling point, that sort of explode, in the finale. Even us as actors, we're like, 'Wait.'"

"[They] did just an incredible job of, in such a short season, sort of weaving all of these storylines and carrying over from the premiere to what's happening [now]," Raver added of the writers and producers. "... It's very entangled and very exciting. It's really a great finale."

Throughout the season, Raver's Dr. Teddy Altman has been recovering after a near-death experience, which the actress told ET has been "quintessential Grey's Anatomy" in that "it puts all the best things in one."

"The fact that, in her coming back [into the season] in recovery, which is very dramatic and painful, there's also some very fun comedic moments... it's a really great evolution to see and a great story to tell," Raver said. "... She's always been such a badass, so it's really fun to see her working her way back."

For Raver, it's no surprise that her character's storyline has been both layered and exciting, something she credits to the show's writers.

"I absolutely love playing Teddy. I just think she's such a multi-faceted character with such an incredible history. It's so amazing to me that the writers are finding new stories to tell with her," she said. "... I feel really lucky and grateful to be able to tell Teddy's story. As people evolve, there's stories to tell. What's great is the patients are coming in and they illuminate stories that are going on for these characters."

Given that the show's storyline evolves as new patients come into Grey Sloan Memorial makes Raver believe thatGrey's could go on indefinitely. It will at least go on one more season, asGrey'swas recently renewed for season 21.

"I think there's an incredible feeling of familiarity. With everything that's going on in the world right now, to be able to have a somewhat... expanded family and to kind of live life with these other people, I think it could go on and on," she said. "I think the core part of Grey's Anatomy is about people's lives and how these patients come in and interact with the lives of our surgeons."

"We have our moments where we shine, and we have our moments where we really fail in a way that we're all in that together, able to support one another and tell funny stories and heartbreaking stories simultaneously, is really quintessential Grey's," Raver added.

That magic speaks to fans across the globe, Raver revealed, as she told ET, "People love Grey's Anatomy. Once I was in a teeny, tiny town in Italy... I couldn't see a lamp post in front of me 'cause it was raining so hard. There were Grey's Anatomy fans that were stopping me in the pouring rain."

"I think people really get attached to the characters 'cause they're living with them," she said. "There's a comfort in that."

Grey's Anatomyairs Thursdays on ABC.

Meredith’s Reaction In Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 Subtly Continues A Season 10 Derek Story – Screen Rant

Warning! SPOILERS about Greys Anatomy season 20, episode 5 ahead.

Merediths story in Greys Anatomy season 20, episode 5 prompted a fight with Nick and some reminiscing over her peculiar situation when her kids are involved, but it also contradicted a Greys Anatomy season 10 story. While Greys Anatomy season 20 surprisingly gave Meredith a win romantically with Nick moving to Boston to put their relationship first, Merediths trips to and from Seattle for the secret Alzheimers research interfered with it. That is especially true given that the secret trips prompted Nick to often take care of Merediths children, causing arguments between Nick and Meredith in case of emergencies.

Balancing the importance of her secret research with her family commitments proved especially difficult with Catherine on the warpath as a result of Merediths Alzheimers statements in Greys Anatomy season 19s ending. Despite their precarious situation, Richard offered Meredith the Fox Foundations private jet to get her to Boston in time for when Bailey woke up after surgery, proving once again the unbreakability of Meredith and Richards bond in Greys Anatomy. Their trip prompted a rare admission of fragility from Meredith about feeling lonely due to raising her kids without Derek. However, when they raised them together, similar problems arose.

Meredith not wanting to be in the same room with Nick because he didnt call her straight away after suspecting Baileys appendicitis showed how extremely protective she was about her children. Richard and Merediths exchange about her not actually being alone in raising them was a consequence of Richard noticing how closed-off Meredith was with Nick after what happened and of Merediths confession that she felt lonely in raising them without Derek. However, Merediths complaints against Nick in Greys Anatomy season 20 were the same as she had against Derek in Greys Anatomy season 10, episode 20.

Greys Anatomy season 10 saw Meredith and Dereks biggest-ever fight arise from his accepting to lead the presidential brain mapping initiative despite having promised to take a step back to care for their family as Meredith focused on her career. Overwhelmed by all his commitments and accused of dropping the ball on teaching the residents and operating on patients by Hunt and Webber, Derek forgot to tell Meredith with whom their kids were in Greys Anatomy season 10, episode 20, resulting in Meredith being worried about her kids whereabouts for three hours and as she operated on someone.

Merediths confession to Richard in Greys Anatomy season 20 romanticized her past with Derek, forgetting the problems she had when Derek took care of their children and what she accused him of, which exactly mirrored the reason behind Merediths anger at Nick.

For most of Greys Anatomy, Meredith raised her children alone. While Amelia, Maggie and Alex greatly helped her in her day-to-day life, decisions about her children were always taken by Meredith by herself. Merediths apologies to Nick in Greys Anatomy season 20, episode 5 centered the point, as it wasnt that she didnt trust him, but that she was used to making decisions about them on her own. However, changing her approach and including Nick in the decisions might actually help Meredith and her children too.

After all, Merediths inclination to fight for the right thing often impacted her kids as well. When committing insurance fraud in Greys Anatomy season 15, Meredith put her daughter Elliss name on the chart. When she almost lost her medical license the following season, her kids could also be affected as it would have impacted Merediths livelihood and theirs. Thus, making decisions with someone else like Nick could mitigate Merediths recklessness, bringing her out of her comfort zone and helping her, Zola, Bailey and Ellis as a result in Greys Anatomy.

Gordian Biotechnology Introduces High-Throughput In Vivo Screening Platform to Discover Therapies and Better … – BioSpace

SAN FRANCISCO, April 26, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Gordian Biotechnology, an in vivo drug discovery and development company, today announced its platform that enables patient predictive, in vivo screening of hundreds of gene targets for FDA-recognized diseases of aging at a scale never before possible.

The company has raised $60 million to date from investors including The Longevity Fund, Arctica Ventures, Athos Service GmbH, Gigafund, Founders Fund, Fifty Years, and former Novartis CEO Thomas Ebeling.

Gordian's Osteoarthritis (OA) program has screened hundreds of therapies in horses that acquired OA naturally and advanced dozens of therapies into human ex vivo validation studies. The results of these ex vivo studies matched screen predictions with 80% accuracy, and several hits progressed to additional testing and optimization. Gordian presented these findings at the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) World Congress last week.

In proof of concept experiments during initial development, Gordian introduced a pooled library of 50 gene therapies into a mouse model of metabolic-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). The therapies were evaluated using the company's proprietary in vivo screening platform, which successfully recapitulated 13 out of 16 clinical outcomes for targets where clinical data exists.

Today, Gordian is completing in vivo screens of thousands of novel single and multi-target therapies across four indications in highly representative animal models across multiple species.

"Gordian leverages recent advancements in single-cell sequencing and gene therapy to discover and predict what drugs will be successful in a way that would have been inconceivable just five years ago," said co-founder and CEO Francisco LePort. "Our ultimate goal is to help people wake up every day, more capable than the one before."

The first and only platform of its kind

Screening in vivo lets Gordian run the equivalent of hundreds of preclinical experiments in a matter of months and at a small fraction of the cost of traditional preclinical studies. Thus, enormous amounts of in vivo data are obtained at the beginning of the discovery process in animal models that would otherwise be impractical to use, allowing only the most efficacious therapeutics to move into development and clinical trials.

The Gordian platform consists of three proprietary components working in concert:

"Our most severe unmet medical needs are the result of aging. This is due to the complexities of the aging body, often involving multiple comorbidities at once, making research and development especially challenging and expensive," said Martin Borch Jensen, Gordian co-founder and chief scientific officer. "Gordian is creating a future in which age-related ailments are treated and cured as effectively as infectious diseases today."

Aging is the ultimate risk factor for humans, the most expensive, yet research is under-funded.

"Age-related diseases are incredibly complex, and a living animal, ideally one that is aged and acquired the disease naturally, is the only experimental system that can capture this complexity," said Laura Deming, a partner at The Longevity Fund and Gordian investor. "Our ability to understand these diseases is bottlenecked by the rate we can run tests in these living systems. Scaling that rate by over 100 fold is really exciting and is a huge leap toward curing age-related disease."

In addition to MASH and OA, Gordian's current focus indications include heart failure with preserved ejection fraction and pulmonary fibrosis. The platform is capable of discovering therapies for a long list of complex diseases. The company seeks to partner with pharmaceutical companies to develop drugs as well as move therapeutics into the clinic internally.

LePort and Borch Jensen studied and worked in separate scientific fields in different parts of the world before meeting in early 2018 as a result of their shared interest in longevity entrepreneurship. They founded Gordian in October of that year.

Bio-Techne loses UK patent bid and heads to UPC – Life Sciences Intellectual Property Review

UK High Court invalidates two patents due to overwhelming evidence supplied by defendant | Biotech firm files same claims in Netherlands division of UPC on same day.

The UK High Court has declared two patents held by Advanced Cell Diagnostics (ACD), a Bio-Techne brand invalid, following a dispute with Molecular Instruments.

ACD alleged in 2022 that Molecular Instruments HCR 3.0 technology infringed two of its European (UK) patents (EP 2,500,439 and EP 1,910,572).

The patents describe methods, kits and products for detecting nucleic acids in individual cells andidentifying rare cells from large heterogeneous cell populations, and underpin ACDs RNAscope in-situ hybridisation (ISH) technology.

ACD owns patents covering various features of its RNAscope technology, which it says is the gold standard for ISH technology.

According to Bio-Techne, ISH technology leverages dynamic nanotechnology to enable small amplification components to first penetrate a biological sample without interacting, and then autonomously grow bright amplification polymers at the site of RNA targets within the sample.

But in his judgment delivered in the UK Patents Court on Wednesday, April 23, Justice Richard Meade rejected ACDs claim of infringement, ruling that both of ACDs patents are invalid and obvious and finding that Molecular Instruments primary evidence is really overwhelming in this case.

He also said: Had the patents been valid, EP572 but not EP439 would have been infringed by the acts to be considered at this trial.

Molecular Instruments CEO Harry Choi said in a statement: Our goal is to empower biologists, bioengineers, drug developers, and diagnostics developers by providing them with next-generation molecular tools that enable breakthroughs in their projects.

We felt compelled to fight this lawsuit to protect the ability of our customers to continue their research, as many customers working in challenging imaging settings cannot perform their experiments with any other technology.

This judgment in our favour ensures that UK researchers will not be denied access to our game-changing HCR imaging platform.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Bio-Techne said: ACD disagrees with this decision and is considering its options for appeal," as reported by GenomeWeb.

Its worth noting that the Patents Court of the High Court of England and Wales did in fact find that Molecular Instruments would have infringed ACDs intellectual property had it been found valid.

ACD will continue to protect its intellectual property and commercial investments and, to that effect, has just filed an additional lawsuit against Molecular Instruments in Europes Unified Patent Court."

Bio-Techne also noted that the UPC covers multiple countries within the EU and that the UK decision will not be precedential.

Parallel EU suit

On the same day as the UK judgment, Bio-Techne filed a lawsuit at the Unified Patent Court (UPC), alleging infringement of the same two patents by Molecular Instruments.

The lawsuit was filed at the Local Division of the Court of First Instance in The Hague, Netherlands, to halt the infringement of its patented RNAscope ISH technology by Molecular Instruments in key European markets.

Bio-Techne describes itself as a pioneer in spatial biology, with its broad portfolio of more than 50,000 unique RNAscope ISH probes across more than 400 species.

Kim Kelderman, president and CEO of Bio-Techne, said in a statement that the company has made substantial investments to become the global leader in the rapidly growing spatial biology industry, including the development and application of its RNAscope technology.

He added that the company had also acquired Lunaphore, which added the fully automated, high-throughput, hyperplex COMET platform to the portfolio.

We will continue to diligently monitor the spatial biology industry, as well as all of the areas where we operate, for violators of our intellectual property and vigorously defend our position against any potential offenders.

Swiss Biotech Report reporting record turnover – European Biotechnology News

The Swiss biotech sector proved robust growth in 2023. Revenues in 2023 increased by CHF500m to CHF7.3bn. Capital investment grew to CHF2bn - just betweeen 2021 (CHF3.4bn) and 2022 (CHF1.3bn).

The Swiss Biotech Report 2024 commissioned by the Swiss Biotech Association and co-published with EY on the occasion of the Swiss Biotech Day demonstrates a clear post-pandemic growth of the Swiss biotech sector. With an annual revenue of CHF7.3bn, Swiss biotechs hit new records, even higher than during the pandemic (2021: CHF6.7bn; 2022: CHF6.8bn). According to the authors of the report on the 2023 industry performance indicators, this is partly due to "significant collaboration and licensing agreements" in which Swiss biotech companies successfully collaborated with Big Pharma. On the other hand, product sales were boosted by a record number of approvals by Swissmedic, EMA, FDA and other regulatory authorities across the globe. These approvals included ground-breaking novel therapies, for example from CRISPR Therapeutics AG, Santhera Pharmaceuticals Holding, Idorsia Pharmaceuticals Ltd, and Basilea Pharmaceutica AG.

In a difficult global financing environment, Oculis SA and MoonLake Immunotherapeutics AG, recorded the largest capital inflows of public Swiss companies: Ophthalmic diseases specialist Oculis SA secured US$144m through a SPAC transaction with follow-on financing on Nasdaq. MoonLake Immunotherapeutics AG, which had its Nasdaq debut in April 2022 through a SPAC merger, baged a US$415m follow-on financing. While the mood on the stock markets has remained poor for the industry since the end of the pandemic, some privately financed biotech companies tapped into good sources of financing in 2023: CNS specialist Noema Pharma AG got CHF103m through a Series B financing, cancer and reverse fibrosis drug developer Alentis Therapeutics AG secured CHF94m, healthy aging biotech Rejuveron Life Sciences AG cashed in CHF67m, Swiss-Italian MVA specialist Nouscom AG raised CHF 65m and gene therapy platform specialist NewBiologix SA has an inflow of CHF45m.

Frederik Schmachtenberg (EY) co-author of the Swiss Biotech Report pointed out that the average of these private financing rounds had increased by around 40% compared to previous year. Overall, the total investment amount in private and listed companies in 2023 showed that the ups and downs of the coronavirus years and the sharp dip in 2022 have thus been overcome. There is more hope for the future, even if framework conditions such as any interest rate decisions by the central banks are currently highly unpredictable.

Michael Altorfer, President of the Swiss Biotechnology Association, emphasised the high export share of the Swiss life sciences and biotech industry. "Switzerland helps the world with its products, but we are also helped by the global community," said Altorfer. Internationalisation would therefore be a fundamental topic for this industry and Switzerland, as evidenced by the high level of international interest in Swiss Biotech Day. Over 1,000 participants from outside Switzerland accounted for almost half of the total of 2,500 registrations. Several cluster organisations from Germany - Rhineland-Palatinate, Munich/Bavaria and Saxony/Saxony-Anhalt - have also set up international delegations in the conference centre's "Global Village" to promote their region and cross-border cooperation with Switzerland.

All companies represented at the Swiss Biotech Day and BIO-Europe show in the field of RNA drugs, diagnostics, services & R&D laboratory hardware and materials are hereby invited to send their URL, geodata and contact details (incl address) for a story "RNA across Europe" in the nextEuropean Biotechnology Magazine toa.macht(at)biocom.deby Tuesday, 7 May. It is planned to print a map of European RNA players in the next issue (publication date 23 May 2024, advertising deadline 10 May 2024) and to publish an interactive map of all RNA players online ateuropean-biotechnology.com. Make your expertise visible and put your company on the map!

Singularity Energy Unveils CarbonFlow – A System Tracing Emissions From Source To Consumption – Carbon Herald

Singularity Energy has developed a product that addresses one of the critical but underreported issues of emissions tracking. Aptly named CarbonFlow, it provides granular details about energy flows on the grid and the emissions generated by its consumption.

Taking an entirely new approach to carbon accounting CarbonFlow is able to trace emissions at an individual line and load level. Its database can track emissions data from the initial production stages, all the way to where energy is used. This capability could revolutionize how carbon emissions are monitored, providing increased transparency and accountability for all stakeholders.

Speaking to Carbon Herald in 2023, Singularitys CEO Wenbo Shi stressed on how important determining the source of energy is. You dont actually burn coal or natural gas to generate electricity in your home. There are power plants that supply the electricity that everybody is using through the power grid. And that is a very complex machine. How do you really know where your power comes from? Does that come from clean energy sources? Or does that come from fossil fuel sources? When people start asking these questions, then you have to know that. And the answer is not very simple.

One of the key features of CarbonFlow is its ability to trace emissions back to their original source. This allows businesses and consumers to identify the precise sources of emissions and take targeted actions to reduce them. By gaining insights into the carbon intensity of different products and processes, organizations can make more informed decisions about resource allocation and supply chain management.

Relevant: Tracking Emissions On An Hourly Basis Is Going To Be Critical For Informing Decarbonization Policy Greg Miller, PhD Research and Policy Lead at Singularity Energy

These capabilities allow CarbonFlow to address one of the main challenges when it comes to calculating consumed emissions. Existing approaches focus on the import and export data between grid operators, combined with information about the fuels being used for power generation.

Though highly informative on a large scale, this approach leaves a gap when it comes to determining how emission rates vary on a region by region basis. CarbonFlow manages to zoom in on that regional level because it can account for power flows across individual transmission corridors.

With this the applications of CarbonFlow can cover a variety of needs like Scope 2 emissions accounting, quantifying the deliverability of renewable energy as well as providing insight for policymakers.

With willingness among many consumers and businesses to reduce their emissions increasing, there are those who remain on the sidelines because they dont feel like they are in a position to make an informed decision. The real-time visibility and accountability that CarbonFlow provides can be one of the most powerful tools to address this challenge.
