Everything We Know About AMC’s ‘Interview with the Vampire’ Series 2022 – The Mary Sue

In 2020, AMC announced they gained the rights to Anne Rices The Vampire Chronicles and Lives of the Mayfair Witches series. The deal happened prior to Rices death in 2021, so it is not clear what her involvement was in the development of the first projectan Interview with the Vampire television show.

I first read Interview with the Vampire as a young teenager and it instantly shaped my lifelong love of pansexual vampires. To this day, the vampire Lestat is one of my all-time favorite literary characters. Yet, the Interview with the Vampire film and the proceeding sequel, Queen of the Damned, did not do nearly as well as the Vampire Chronicles book series did. As a side note, I am still bitter they never attempted the novel The Vampire Lestat since that is my favorite of all the books and went between the two films they made. Why did they skip it?!

Because of my past disappointments, I had little hope for this series. But after seeing the actors cast in the show and watching the recently released teaser trailer, I am actually looking forward to it! Here is everything we know about the upcoming show.

Louis de Pointe du Lac Jacob Anderson, who is best known for playing Grey Worm on Game of Thrones (or as he is called by Jonathan Van Ness, Little Baby Barack Obama), will play Louis. The novel begins with Louis telling the boy (later in the series he gets the name Daniel Molloy) about his life as a vampire. It starts when Lestat de Lioncourt chose Louis as his consort. Louis is beautiful and sad, something that keeps Lestat eternally hooked.

Lestat de Lioncourt Sam Reid (Anonymous) will play Lestat. A French vampire who comes to New Orleans looking for a new lease on the afterlife, he feels Louiss humanity will bring him into the new era. Lestat has a dark humor that no one understands. He feels everything deeply, love and hate, but reveals nothing to those around him.

Claudia Newcomer Bailey Bass will play vampire-child, Claudia. Although the actress looks to be in her late teens, the character is supposed to be a very young child. Her innocent look dupes her victims into trusting, not knowing she is a cold-blooded killer. There is no official word, but I can imagine they aged the character up for practical (and possibly problematic) reasons. Lestat found orphaned Claudia and made her into a vampire to keep Louis with him, so they would be a proper family.

Daniel Molloy Eric Bogosian (Law & Order: Criminal Intent) will play Daniel Molloy. In the novel, Louis only refers to him as the boy. So I find it amusing that in this context, a man in his early thirties will play Louis, and the boy is a man almost seventy. Daniel interviews interesting people and takes a particular shine to Louis, wanting to know his story.

The original story began at the end of the 18th century in New Orleans. Louis owns a profitable Indigo plantation. He meets an enchanting vampire named Lestat, who offers him immortality. The two become locked forever in an angsty and beautiful romance filled with so many communication and intimacy issues.

The teaser trailer, and all the officially released pictures, seem like the show takes place much more recently during the Jazz Age (1920s-1930s). This could mean several things. Either Louis doesnt become a vampire until later, or the plot explores this portion of their lives as opposed to the earlier times. In many ways, the Jazz Age is much more funit has its own fantastic soundtrack, and those tailored suits look lovely.

At the end of the teaser, it said the shows premiere date for Fall 2022 on AMC. Just in time for some Halloween viewing.

Last year I started re-reading the novel and, honestly, it wasnt as good as I remembered it being. Since its publication in 1976, a lot has changed in our worlds and many parts did not age well. Rices romanticizing of southern plantations and queer-baiting would not be as well-received today. Even since the movies, gay romances (like the one that played out in the books between the two main vampires) have become more mainstream. So I am hoping with all of my (vampire-loving) soul that AMC has the guts to take the series and make it betterfinally giving fans the love affair between Louis and Lestat we have all been waiting for.

You Should (Probably) Read: Endymion by Dan Simmons – Hipsters of the Coast

Sequels are notoriously hard, perhaps even impossible, to pull off in a satisfying manner. Should you hew closely to the formula that resulted in your initial success? How much can you evolve your work while retaining as many fans as possible? Can anything really live up to the original?

Enter Dan Simmons and Endymion (Bookshop.org | Amazon), the 1996 follow up to the Nebula and Locus award winning Hyperion. Simmonss approach to (hopefully) avoiding a sophomore slump was to write a 1,000-page book, split it in half, and publish it as two separate books. The Fall of Hyperion may technically be the sequel to Hyperion, but it is really the conclusion of the original story. Thus, Endymionthe third book of four in the Hyperion Cantos, followed by the finale, The Rise of Endymionis the work that actually bears the burden of a traditional sequel.

Simmons chose to evolve his formula for Hyperions sequel as Endymion takes place in the same universe but is set hundreds of years after the events of the first two books. The events and characters of the original story have faded into legend since the fall of humanitys intergalactic empire at the conclusion of The Fall of Hyperion, though theycontinue to haunt Endymions story at various points. A resurgent Catholic Church, thanks to its mastery of the mysterious resurrection parasite called the cruciform, has filled the void left after the fall and has become the dominant political power in the universe in the form of a theocratic government called the Pax.

MORE: Dont miss our review of Hyperion by Dan Simmons.

The story uses a dual hunter/hunted point of view as its structure to tell the story of Raul Endymion and the messianic Aenea as they flee from Pax forces led by Father Captain Federico de Soya. The Pax believes that Aenea is a threat to the Churchs dominance in human affairs and has chosen de Soya to capture her. But Simmons tries the same trick with this book that he did with Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperionit turns out that the 600 pages of Endymion is just the first half of the story. An additional 800 pages in The Rise of Endymion is required to complete the story.

The hunter/hunted structure serves Endymion well as the cat-and-mouse game provides enough tension to push the book towards its end and give its characters (especially de Soya) room to develop. Unfortunately, this structure continues into The Rise of Endymion and begins to collapse under its own weight, resulting in a 1,400-page story that could easily be cut down by 400 pages. This is especially apparent when, at multiple points, Simmons resorts to 20-page sections of dialog to explain some mysteries and conclude an act of the story, separated by hundreds of pages describing planets and characters in immense detail despite the fact that they dont have any significant impact on the story.

The original covers for Endymion and The Rise of Endymion.

The de Soya and the Pax plot lines are a highlight throughout both books. They are tight, full of mystery and intrigue, and driven by interesting characters. (I have no idea why the Pax point of view is unceremoniously abandoned halfway through The Rise of Endymion.) Raul, on the other hand, is both the protagonist and the flattest, must uninteresting character in the story. This makes it particularly difficult to make it through the more plodding sections of The Rise of Endymion, so feel free to skim as you see fit.

Aenea is more interesting as a quasi-messiah who can see potential futures. But her character falls prey to the lack of development that characters who can see the future often suffer from. Simmons (somehow) didnt find the space in either book to deconstruct the ability to see the future and the impact that ability can have on a character (like Frank Herbert did with Paul Atreides in Dune and its sequels), leaving Aenea to conclude The Rise of Endymion as more or less in the same person as she was at the beginning of Endymion.

The aforementioned issues help explain the polarized reception Endymion and The Rise of Endymion have received since their release in 1996 and 1998, respectively. The universe Simmons has created is still top-notch and worthy of additional stories set within it, but the story of Endymion and The Rise of Endymion is uneven and often boring. The antagonistsde Soya and his Pax allieslive up to the potential of the universe, while the protagonists fall far short as they meander their way towards the storys climax.

And it really doesnt help that Raul (in his late 20s and early 30s) and Aenea (a pre-teen and teenager) have the seeds of a romantic relationship throughout the first book and a half. Even when Aenea is of age, Simmonss portrayal of their romance is clunky and the scenes depicting their more intimate moments are extremely cringeworthy.

In their more focused moments, Endymion and The Rise of Endymion are interested in deconstructing the ideas of religion and faith. In this story, the Catholic Church has achieved immortality for its adherents thanks to the cruciform parasite and Simmons uses that setup to explore the consequences of immortality on a religion and society. He also uses Aeneas messianic arc to highlight the moral clarity of personal faith by contrasting it to the danger and amorality of organized religion-cum-theocracy. These themes are just as fertile as those in Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion, but Simmons makes you work significantly harder to engage with them in Endymion and The Rise of Endymion.

Ultimately, both Endymion and The Rise of Endymion are let down by their length, wandering of focus, and lacking protagonists. Simmonss writing style is easy to digest and lends itself to extended reading sessions, so both books are worth your time if youd like answers to the most interesting questions Hyperions universe has to offer. Just dont be afraid to start skimming when Rauls narrative beings to drag. And it willIm looking at you, Book 2 of The Rise of Endymion. But the books dont stand on their own, meaning your enjoyment of the final two installments of the Hyperion Cantos will likely hinge on how interested you are in the larger story and characters that span the entire series.

Retired CFL QB Michael Reilly inducted into Central Washington University Hall of Fame, credits time with Wildcats for pro success – 3downnation.com

Recently retired CFL quarterback Michael Reilly will have to wait five years to get his bust in the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, but the gutsy dual-threat pivot got a taste of richly deserved sports immortality when he was inducted into the Central Washington University Hall of Fame on Saturday.

Reilly quarterbacked the Wildcats football team from 2005 to 2008 and set an NCAA all-division record for consecutive games with a touchdown pass by throwing for a score in all 46 games of his collegiate career. A native of Kennewick, Washington, he finished his time at CWU with a 64 percent completion rate for 12,448 passing yards, 118 touchdowns and 40 interceptions.

As a senior, Reilly was named the 2008 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year and a runner-up for the Harlon Hill Trophy as the most valuable player in Division II after passing for 3,706 yards and 37 touchdowns and six interceptions. That same season, Reilly earned All-America honours from Daktronics, D2Football.com, and Don Hansens Football Gazette.

Originally a walk-on at Washington State, Reilly admitted in a Q & A with WildcatSports.com that he never imagined a Hall of Fame enshrinement would await him after transferring to the tiny school in Ellensburg.

The thought never really crossed my mind. My goal was always to end up playing professional football, but when I started attending Central in 2005 my sole focus was performing well enough to become the starter and doing the things necessary to earn the respect of my teammates so that I could become a leader for our team, Reilly recalled.

[Former CWU head coach John Zamberlin] was also always quick to remind me that although they had high expectations for me, I hadnt done anything yet on the field and needed to prove myself.

He did more than simply prove himself, joining Jon Kitna on the shortlist of best ever Wildcats quarterbacks. After short stints with four separate NFL franchises, Reilly went on to have an outstanding 12-year career in the CFL with the B.C. Lions and Edmonton Elks. He won Grey Cup championships with both teams, earning Grey Cup MVP honours with Edmonton in 2015 and become the leagues Most Outstanding Player in 2017.

Reilly retired in January as the 14th most productive passer in CFL history. He has finished his career with 34,805 passing yards, 182 touchdowns, 105 interceptions, 3,566 rushing yards, and 56 rushing touchdowns. He threw for over 5,000 yards in three consecutive seasons from 2016 to 2018, a feat that only Doug Flutie and Anthony Calvillo had previously accomplished.

According to Reilly, much of that professional success can be attributed to the lessons he learned while playing for the Wildcats.

The number one thing that Central taught me when it came to football was that I had to earn everything that I wanted, and that nothing would be given to me based on who I was or where I was from, he said.

A lot of great players from big Division I schools would come up to the CFL and thought that they could just coast through and be an all-star and that was rarely the case for them. Coming from CWU and Division II, I had the lunch pail mentality that I needed to prove myself and earn my paycheque every single day and I think that attitude served me well throughout my career.

While the 37-year-old may marvel at the fact he is old enough to have a spot in any Hall of Fame, you can guarantee Central Washingtons ceremony wont be the last one Michael Reilly has to attend.

New hard kombucha brand by St. Paul native launches in the Twin Cities – Yahoo News

A new alcoholic beverage is bubbling in the Twin Cities. Hooch Booch, a hard kombucha brand coming out of Denver, Colo., made its Minnesota debut this April.

Created by Anna Zesbaugh, a born-and-raised Minnesotan, the idea to create a Prohibition-inspired hard kombucha percolated when she was furloughed during the beginning of the pandemic. The frenzy to rush to the liquor stores and stock up on alcohol as the pandemic began to close businesses, including liquor stores, reminded Zesbaugh of the Prohibition era. I wanted to create a drink that was a nod to the past but that was crafted for modern times, says Zesbaugh.

Hooch Boochs hard kombucha comes in three vegan and gluten-free flavors: Clover Club, Bees Knees and Old Fashioned. Clocking in at 8.5% ABV, the beverage undergoes two fermentations (nonalcoholic kombucha usually undergoes only one), is brewed with fresh Rocky Mountain spring water and incorporates real fruit purees and local-to-Colorado ingredients.

You can find Hooch Booch at the following Minnesota locations: Union 32 Craft House, Merwin Liquors, Eagans Big Discount Liquor, Highland Parks Haskells, Sharretts Liquor, Midway Liquor, Kowalskis on Grand Avenue, Wildcats Bar and Grill, Eagans Atomic Liquors and St. Pauls Liquor Vault.

In recent years, kombucha and the fermented tea-based beverages boozy alternatives, have created a significant wedge in the beverage market. According to Market Watch, hard kombucha sales grew from $1.7 million in 2017 to $12 million in 2019.

The probiotic beverage has witnessed a substantial rise in popularity this past decade alone, as many health gurus have made kombucha a part of their diet. Kombucha has been around long before the LuluLemon yoga pant-wearing type found out about its health benefits. The nearly 2000-year-old beverage was deemed the tea of immortality by Qin dynasty-era brewers when it was created in 221 BCE, according to Vox.

DOWNTON ABBEY: A NEW ERAPG, 125 minutes, in cinemas April 28

In Downton Abbeys first excursion on the big screen in 2019, the upstairs and downstairs families battled the implacable forces of the Buckingham Palace bureaucracy in the lead-up to a visit from King George V and Queen Mary.

This time, they face an equally powerful but much more modern institution with an aristocracy all its own the moving pictures.

All the familiar faces have turned up for the occasion.Credit:Ben Blackall

A film is to be shot at Downton, a prospect that fills Hugh Bonnevilles Lord Grantham with revulsion. The place will be overrun, he snorts, by actresses plastered in make-up and actors just plastered.

Then, just in time, a diversion presents itself. His mother, Maggie Smiths Lady Violet Crawley, receives the news shes been gifted a villa in the south of France. Why? This question is a cue for Downtons creator, Julian Fellowes, to introduce one of his most reliable plot devices, the long-buried family secret. A Crawley party sets out for the Riviera to find out more, leaving Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) to watch over the film-making.

The mere fact Violet has fronted up for the sequel verges on a minor miracle. At the end of the last film, she was dealing with the revelation she probably had just a few months to live news that would surely have pleased Maggie Smith herself. When the series finished in 2015, she told chat show host Graham Norton that she was glad that it was over, partly because Violet had to be about 110 by then and her continued good health didnt make a lot of sense. Even on Downtons rarefied plane of existence, immortality isnt yet in the offing.

Penelope Wilton stars as Isobel Merton and Maggie Smith as Violet Grantham.Credit:Ben Blackall

But here she is, saddling up again, ready to fire off a new quiver full of Violets characteristic zingers with all her old elan. Just before the film crew is due to arrive, she gives Mary a sage piece of advice. Women like us, she says, fall into two categories dragons and fools. You must make sure they think of you as a dragon.

One-Liners In a World Without End – Splice Today

A solitary dancer, another hapless soul going through the macabre motions, choreographed movement within and without. A little soft shoe routine, well-seasoned hoofers, belting out old show tunes from forgotten days. A tap dance to the grave. The herky-jerky. The last act, a final curtain. Like theres no tomorrow for a show stoppers big finish. With aflair for drama, the pageantry, a parade of one, dancing solo, a backward journey going forward. No encores.

A cortge bier, funeral pyre, to burn without fire. Its the only way to go. So this is how it is, on days like this, to come and go, until they carry you away? All the pomp of a down-and-dirty dirge. A slow march into the unknown. Signing off on the lease of lifes temporary rental. Twists, turns, too many dead ends. No outlet, or egress, tread softly, upon the earth for those interred in it. Ash to dust, its sublime. Point A to point B? Any directions as good as another. Getting lost on a living map. Nobody goes out in alphabetical order. The directory, an obituary, listed A to Z. Well-spent long sojourns, stopping along way to smell the coffee, the flowers, the manure in a ragged world cafe. Who put the fun in funerals?

Death, dont be cruel. It takes all the fun out of living. Therere no rules. Like when someone answers the phone, Hello, were the undertakers, Diggs, Graves, & Berry. You plug em, we plant em! You whack em, we stack em. You stab em, we slab em. You kill em, we chill em. No hurry, Morts my name, buryings my game. A drunken wake for the recently deceased. If only for poor unfortunates left behind to fend for themselves. Just when you think its over, it begins. This could be the start of something big. Just get up, and leave without saying a word. Disappearing into the loamy scenery, a hubris of humus, the eternal dirt nap. Lay down your burden, by the riverside.

Theres speculation floating around that an unusual parallel universe exists, one that only moves backwards. A reverse time heading to the past, canceling out the future. Time as we know it is irrelevant. Theres a possibility. No time like the present. Tell that to your boss the next time youre late for work. Theyll dock your pay for time that never passed. Youre there but not there. Research claims its possible time may not exist at all. Dark matter may be the vacuum that sucks past, present, and future events into itself. A soap opera gumbo, inside a warped consciousness of existential mumbo jumbo. Released, with time served for good behavior.

Ive addressed this topic on many occasions. Why were here, and where do we go? You can spend an entire life contemplating your demise, or question the reasons why. The low spark, the brief respite, single bright moments. A day in the sun, or perpetual darkness of the soul. Have a sense of humor about it. Its all in jest, the joker of undoing, a lifetime, a single day, the little nothings taken for granted. Its a raw deal, this crazy life. Just when you get the hang of it, poof, thanks for the memories.

Thats okay, I get the absurdity. I understand never knowing for certain. The plans, the meanings, the nature of change, whats left, or long gone. This life, time and place, will be the death of us. Thats plenty for satire. Its a narrow theme with a broad audience. Like a fence around a cemetery, to keep you in or out. You can live forever, on layaway. Immortality is highly overrated, but people die, trying to live forever. The best way to cheat death, go out laughing. The last one-liner youll never hear. I thought there would be cake.

Why Eternals Have To Kill The X-Men (Free Comic Book Day Spoilers) – Bleeding Cool News

|

The upcoming Judgement Day event from Marvel Comics puts Eternal against X-Men against Avenger for reasons. Mutants have been declared Deviants, and we know what Eternals do with Deviants.

But the Free Comic Book Day looks at why that changed and why the Eternals have no choice to do what they do. And never did.

Eternals were born that way. Created by the Eternals to remove the demonic Deviants from their influence on Earth. That's how Jack Kirby created it though the justification has been morally compromised over the years from a variety of creators and most notably the recent Marvel Studios movie. They see what is Deviancy and they exterminate it. And have done for millions of years. Including during the time of the Avengers 1,000,000 BC when Odin led the team.

Poor telepathic monkeys of a million years ago. Declared Deviants by the Eternals and then wiped out. That's genocide. And all because they were developing the same kind of Uni-Mind that the Eternals enjoy.

Of course humanity has evolved through that time with many deviancies. What makes a deviant and what does not? Given the many mutants on the Marvel Earth, why have they not been declared Deviant before now?

It's the grand Krakoan experiment, that has given mutants the gift of resurrection. Effective immortality, as long as Krakoa exists, the Cerebro network works and The Five are able to keep things going. And everyone gets to keep seeing Cyclops naked. But just as the Eternals are immortal, the mutants cannot be allowed to be.

And so if that is defined as Deviation by the Eternals, their genetic imperatives will be to wipe out mutants. They will have no choice. Or will they? This is AXE: Judgment Day from Kieron Gillen and Valerio Schiti, and an FCBD teaser drawn by Dustin Weaver. And you can find other FCBD spoilers with this handy dandy tag.

War has never been a reason not to replace a UK Prime Minister – The National

IT is striking to note the spurious argument that because there is war in Ukraine this means that the Prime Minister should remain in office and not be replaced.

This is a man who has broken the law, the first Prime Minister in office to do this, as well as lying to parliament. History highlights that on numerous occasions we have replaced the Prime Minister in wars we have been directly involved in.

For instance, in May 1940 Neville Chamberlain resigned after the failure of British efforts to liberate Norway. In December 1916, at the height of the First World War, Lloyd George replaced Herbert Asquith. More recently, Mrs Thatcher resigned in November 1990, with Iraq invading Kuwait in August of that year, which led to the Gulf War.

READ MORE:Nicola Sturgeon: Douglas Ross using Ukraine to defend Johnson is 'lowest of the low'

Add to this changes to Prime Ministers during the war in Afghanistan, the Second Boer War, the Second Opium War and the Crimean War. Changing a Prime Minister in a time of conflict is clearly not unprecedented.

Those who make the law cannot be seen to be breaking the law and it is scarcely credible that Mr Johnson, who has now lost the final fragments of any moral authority he did have, can carry the confidence of the country and remain in office.

Alex OrrEdinburgh

I HAVE squirmed repeatedly as Unionists defend Boris Johnson on the grounds that an illegal party is trivial compared with the bloody war in Ukraine.

Firstly, the whole mechanism of government will be available to deal with the ramifications of the war, and the PMs part is comparatively minor, in fact given Johnsons legendary laziness and lack of preparation its probably negligible. But secondly, and far more importantly, the Tory drinks parties were not victimless crimes as has been implied.

READ MORE:Douglas Ross denies 'cynically using Ukraine' to defend law-breaking Boris Johnson

An ordinary member of the public, breaking the rules, risks harming and maybe causing the deaths of a few acquaintances. A senior politician breaking the rules risks much more: a public loss of belief, replaced by nihilism, and ultimately a large amount of avoidable mortality and morbidity. Its a crime of reckless endangerment of millions of people.

Derek BallBearsden

WHAT a dreadful shambles that is Westminster. The odious Boris Johnson supported by his dumb and dumber Scottish rep Douglas Dross.

Johnson has lied, misled parliament, broken the ministerial code, the first PM in office to break the law, he is at the root of the cronyism and PPE scandal that has lined the pockets of his millionaire buddies.

READ MORE:Douglas Ross 'destroys credibility' with car crash BBC Scotland interview

The cost-of-living crisis is in the large part due to him and his business vultures who put themselves and their wealth first and enforced Brexit on Scotland.

Johnsons MPs are standing by him but that does not mean that our SNP MPs need to join the eejits they should stand up for Scotland and refuse to work with him. Come home and lets start the campaign for our self-determination our independence. Scotland deserves better than being dominated by a bunch of self-serving numpties.

Jan FerrieAyrshire

WHY are individuals and the the media overlooking the fact that Johnson lied to parliament which, when exposed, calls for an automatic resignation of the perpetrator? Shouldnt the Speaker be taking action to implement parliamentary standards?

Douglas Ross claiming that Johnsons presence is essential while the war is raging in the Ukraine is nonsense. Surely a party with an 80-seat majority could find a better replacement, even one who doesnt tell porkies. Johnsons handling of the run-up to the war did nothing to enhance his attempt at statesmanship.

Mike UnderwoodLinlithgow

SO here we have D Ross, who on the basis of what were then merely allegations publicly called for Johnson to resign or be sacked. Now with actual guilt being found and confirmed by Johnson, D Ross says Johnson must stay because of Ukraine. At first the logic of this was beyond me, then I saw his logic!

Clearly when dealing with a pathological lying populist in the Kremlin, the UK needs a lying populist (or two) in Downing Street!

The criminal and Unionist party are a disgrace lets throw them out here in Scotland and lets get Scotland out of the UK, which is run by pathological liars and now criminals!

Rab Doigvia email

THE widespread use of the name BOZO almost sounds like a term of endearment these days. Following Tuesdays confirmation of party fines, may I suggest the name is henceforth changed to BOOZO? At least, being more apt, it cant easily be misconstrued.

Bruce MogliaBridge of Weir

DOUGLAS Ross suggesting this is not the time to remove a Prime Minister who has been found out only serves to promote Mr Rosss cowardliness. It is not only the party that is over political careers are hanging by a thread. Voters only have a short time to wait for the opportunity to give their verdict: the local elections are looming on May 5 and a clear message should be forthcoming.

Catriona C ClarkFalkirk

IF the lying Prime Minister will not resign, surely one of the Queens final acts should be to summon him to Buckingham Palace and insist that he resign to uphold longstanding protocols. Does this also mean that Ian Blackford can call him a liar in the House of Commons without fear of contradiction?

Trafficking conviction results in 2-14-year sentence | Serving Minden-Gardnerville and Carson Valley – The Record-Courier

A longtime Johnson Lane resident was sentenced to 2-14 years in prison on Monday after being convicted by a jury of multiple drug felonies.

Robert Vieth Wilson, 65, has indicated on several occasions that its his intention to appeal his conviction for charges of trafficking, sales and possession of methamphetamine, 4.4 pounds of psilocybin mushrooms and concentrated marijuana.

I know the truth will come out, he said as his friends and family watched from the gallery.

Wilson was given credit for 833 days time served since his first arrest on Oct. 16, 2019.

Attorney Christopher Day recommended Wilson be sentenced to 19-48 months in prison with credit for time served on the 11 counts the jury voted to convict him on.

Day said that psilocybin mushrooms are being legalized in other states and appear to be following the same path as cannabis.

The defense attorney cited the death of Wilsons wife in 2015 as the cause of his spiral into drug use. Prior to that he had a clean criminal record. Day argued that Wilsons crimes were essentially victimless.

He is not a drug trafficker, Day said. He is a harmless and hapless individual. He is not a criminal master mind. He wont hurt the community.

Prosecutor A.J. Hames told District Judge Tom Gregory that Wilson had significant amounts of drugs in his home.

This was a big operation, he said.

Hames said that Wilson had been arrested in 2017 for concentrating marijuana in his home and that hed entered a no contest plea to misdemeanor introduction of a drug not allowed in interstate commerce in 2018 and placed on two years probation.

His arrest in 2019 violated that probation and he was ordered to serve that sentence.

Hames recommended an aggregate sentence of 20-53 years in prison, which Day argued would amount to a death sentence.

Wilson benefitted in the reduction in sentences approved by the 2021 Legislature, which took effect July 1, 2022. Had he been sentenced under the old scheme, he would have faced multiple life terms.

One of the issues at trial was the information provided by a confidential informant resulted in up to five different buys, something Gregory said resulted in an unusual stacking of charges.

The informant refused to testify at Wilsons trial after he violated the probation hed won by participating in the buys and was sent to prison. The Record-Courier reported on the informants case, including his eventual sentencing.

Gregory sentenced Wilson to 1-10 years on the first count of trafficking and 19-48 months for the following five counts related to Wilsons sale of drugs to an informant.

Wilson received a consecutive 1-4-year sentence for drugs found during a search of his home and ran three felonies and a gross misdemeanor concurrent.

Wilson has 21 days from Monday to file an appeal of his conviction.

OC District Attorneys Office launches diversion program for cases that may involve mental health, substance abuse – OCRegister

Orange County has launched a program to connect eligible people arrested for low-level crimes with mental health and substance abuse services before criminal charges are filed in an effort to curb reoffending, the District Attorneys Office announced Wednesday.

The FIRST (Focused Intervention Route to Services and Treatment) Point Diversion Program plans to target specific people with possible behavioral issues, including mental health challenges or substance abuse, who have committed victimless misdemeanor crimes or misdemeanor crimes where the victim is cooperative.

It will be headed by the OC District Attorneys Office in partnership with participating police departments around Orange County, including the Orange County Sheriffs Department, Irvine Police Department and Seal Beach Police Department.

A law enforcement officer from one of the participating agencies will send the crime report to a designated prosecutor. If the prosecutor believes there is enough evidence to file charges, but the person qualifies for the program, the case is referred to an intake counselor at the countys Health Care Agency to assess and develop a treatment plan. This could include services such as substance abuse counseling and mental illness assistance.

The persons progress and success in the program is monitored by their counselor. If successful, the charges are not filed, but if the program is not completed within 10 months, prosecutors will still have the ability to file criminal charges before the one-year statute of limitations expires.

Participants in the program will also be able to consult with the Countys Social Services Agency to see if they are eligible for food stamps or Medi-Cal services. Access to social services and any benefits they may receive will continue regardless of whether the program participant successfully completes the program, the OC District Attorneys Office said in a news release.

Law enforcement agencies hope addressing underlying issues in exchange for not filing criminal charges will prevent a criminal record that may impede their employment or housing opportunities and reduce the number of repeat offenders.

Industry Perspectives Op-Ed: When contractors engage in tax fraud they are stealing from the rest of us – constructconnect.com – Daily Commercial News

Every year, Canadians contribute to their communities by paying taxes.

Public tax dollars pay for critical investments in our schools and hospitals and for a host of other benefits for both the elderly and our children.

The money we pay builds the neighbourhoods we live in and takes care of the people around us. However, every year many construction contractors and builders selfishly and criminally refuse to pay their fair share. Does that seem right to you?

According to the Ontario Construction Secretariat, our governments lose up to $3.1 billion in revenue due to construction contractors not paying their fair share of taxes. They lose an estimated $1.1 billion in general taxes, $656 million in CPP contributions, $18 million in Employer Health Tax, $119 million in employment insurance, $340 million in WSIB payments and $832 million in HST revenues.

For governments at every level, finding the required financial resources is key to our ongoing ability to deliver much-needed health care, education and infrastructure investments. Stamping out tax fraud in construction is a crucial tool in enabling us to collect such financial resources. Just think of the services and investments which could be paid for with the extra $3.1 billion that would be available each and every year if everyone paid their fair share.

Tax fraud within the construction industry takes many forms.

It can be as simple as people paying cash for home renovations or, as is extremely common now, the misclassification of workers as independent contractors.

These practices lower the general contractors income and payroll tax responsibilities and allows them to avoid tax and CPP/EI/WSIB contributions. This goes on with every trade across the entire industry, including floor covering installers, tile setters, painters and decorators and carpenters. Unfortunately, the underground economy is growing.

It is sometimes assumed that practices like paying cash or misclassifying workers are victimless crimes but workers vanishing into the grey economy has led, in the worst cases, to human trafficking and serious disregard for the basic health and safety of workers, resulting in deaths in some cases.

We have seen examples of all of these phenomena in recent years and, in fact, one of the biggest human trafficking cases in Canadian history, the Domotor Case, was a result of these practices right here in Ontario.

We at the Carpenters Union are determined to do something about this.

Construction companies engaging in tax fraud, such as by not classifying their workers properly to avoid their tax obligations, result in two severe consequences, economic inequity and worker vulnerability.

Economic inequity results from the unfair advantage gained by employers who do not play by the rules by improperly avoiding taxes. This hurts industry competitors but it also hurts the general public as well.

Now, when governments collect taxes to pay for infrastructure or social security, the average citizen has to contribute more to make-up for the amounts not contributed by the construction companies.

This means that as spending increases with our economy bouncing back from the COVID-19 pandemic, honest and hardworking taxpayers are hurt the most.

Additionally, by committing tax fraud, contractors are putting the lives of their workers at risk. Paying construction workers off the books or as independent contractors makes employers less accountable and jeopardizes basic safety standards on jobsites.

Workers can often be cheated out of their pay and forced to work long hours, under horrendous conditions, at jobsites that simply are not safe.

This can include, not being paid overtime or other required premiums or not even being paid at all in the worst cases. These are just a few examples of what is going on in Ontario right now.

This underground economy is large in size and broad in scope.

However, whether someone is being paid under the table to paint the inside of a house or human trafficking is taking place, both are crimes and should not be tolerated in Ontarios construction industry. Quite simply, all forms of tax fraud are theft and when contractors engage in tax fraud they are stealing from the rest of us.

While tax fraud is not an issue that can be resolved overnight, there are tangible steps that can be taken to begin eliminating these toxic practices on our jobsites.

The implementation and enforcement of a fair wage policy by both the Ontario and the federal government needs to happen now and these policies need to be applied universally to all builders.

This is a solution that the City of Toronto adopted over 100 years ago to ensure their workers were not discriminated against by contractors failing to pay fair hourly wages, vacation and holiday pay, along with certain basic benefits.

Torontos Fair Wage Policy ensures the ethical treatment of workers and holds employers accountable through oversight and enforcement by the citys fair wage office.

If the federal and provincial governments adopted these practices it would greatly reduce the employment vulnerability that many workers face and help eliminate unfair competition between contractors. We need to take a stand against tax fraud and show our support for those who build our province.

The Carpenters District Council of Ontario is leading the way against tax fraud in the construction industry and will be promoting Tax Fraud Days of Action from April 11 to 16, as seen on our website http://www.notaxfraud.com.

With a long economic recovery and large levels of uncertainty ahead, it is important that contractors pay their fair share, to ensure critical infrastructure can continue to be built and our economy makes a strong comeback.

Two expected to plead guilty in cryptocurrency case – Concord Monitor

As Keene resident and libertarian activist Ian Freeman awaits trial on federal charges related to his bitcoin-exchange business, two of his alleged co-conspirators have signaled they will enter guilty pleas.

Renee and Andrew Spinella, both of Derry, are scheduled for change-of-plea hearings Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Concord. Their shift from not-guilty pleas to pleading guilty would mark the first time any of the six alleged co-conspirators have admitted wrongdoing.

Freeman, Colleen Fordham of Alstead, Aria DiMezzo of Keene and a Keene man who legally changed his name from Richard Paul to Nobody have all pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Prosecutors claim Freeman and his alleged co-conspirators violated federal law by running an unlicensed virtual currency-exchange business that handled more than $10 million in transactions over several years.

According to the government, Freeman and other co-defendants used personal bank accounts and accounts in the names of purported religious entities like the Shire Free Church, the Crypto Church of NH, the Church of the Invisible Hand and the Reformed Satanic Church to conceal the nature of their business while directing customers to falsely report that they were donating to churches or buying rare coins, not purchasing cryptocurrency.

The government arrested the six in March 2021. The FBI conducted several searches in Keene one day that month, including at 73-75 Leverett St. and at two properties on Route 101.

Those properties are linked to the libertarian activist group known locally as Free Keene, which has ties to some of the defendants. The Route 101 searches were at 661 Marlboro Road, at a business called Bitcoin Embassy N.H., and 659 Marlboro Road, which is owned by Shire Free Church Holdings LLC. The FBI also conducted an operation at a local convenience store, with an employee at the time telling The Sentinel agents removed a Bitcoin ATM.

Court records indicate the defendants trial is scheduled to begin Nov. 1.

All six alleged co-conspirators were charged with conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money-transmitting business, and all but DiMezzo also face a charge of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Renee Spinella additionally faces two charges of wire fraud and Andrew Spinella faces a single additional charge of wire fraud. Court documents do not indicate what charge or charges they are expected to plead guilty to.

Freeman also faces charges of operation of an unlicensed money-transmitting business, continuing financial-crimes enterprise, money laundering and six counts of wire fraud. The continuing financial-crimes enterprise charge carries a 10-year mandatory minimum sentence.

Unfortunately the way the federal government works is they do their best to intimidate people by stacking on as many charges as possible, Freeman said Saturday.

Freeman said he has not been allowed to talk to his co-defendants, but has heard that the prosecution threatened the Spinellas with additional charges to force them into a plea deal. The Sentinel has not been able to confirm this. Court documents do not indicate any additional charges. Renee Spinella was not immediately reachable by phone. Neither Andrew Spinella nor his attorney were immediately reachable Saturday for a request for comment.

Freeman said he does not expect that the Spinellas will cooperate with the government, despite the scheduled guilty plea.

Nobody here did anything wrong. These are victimless so-called crimes, he said. I expect they will not be cooperating with the state because we all believe the state is evil.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Georgiana L. MacDonald has previously alleged that hordes of cybercriminals bought virtual currency from Freeman in an effort to avoid detection by banks and government regulators.

The government also claims in court documents Freeman allowed an undercover agent to exchange around $20,000 in cash for bitcoin after the agent told him he was dealing drugs. Freemans lawyer, Mark Sisti, has previously told The Sentinel he doesnt know where the governments claim about an undercover agent is coming from. He said he has seen evidence of Freeman refusing to deal with criminals.

DiMezzo, also reached by phone Saturday, said the Spinellas have to do what is best for themselves even if that means entering a plea deal with the government.

In the libertarian philosophy as long as they are making the decision that is best for them the world is best served, DiMezzo said.

While she said she believes a jury will find no evidence of the alleged crimes, certainly, if they agree to be star witnesses to the prosecutors, that certainly will have an effect on other peoples cases.

But a guilty plea is not evidence of guilt, DiMezzo argued, claiming, as Freeman did, that the federal government stacks charges against defendants to bully them into pleas.

Its hard to accept a guilty plea as an actual confession of guilt in the modern court system, she said. Whether theyre guilty or not, [defendants] accept the deal to make the bigger threat go away.

Assessing COMP’s ascension with a decrease in net monthly borrowing – AMBCrypto News

The DeFi token Compound was on a massive rally on 12 April at the back of the Robinhoods listing. The altcoin, along with Solana, Shiba Inu, and Polygon, was added to the existing list of assets offered by the platform.

At one point during the day on 12 April, COMP shot up by 15.48% before slipping back down to trade a $125.52, having still risen by 7.04%. This was huge support for the altcoin, whose last few days have been beyond uneventful.

After registering a 72.38% rally during the March April bullish period, the token lost about 31.66% of the rise within ten days, thanks to the broader market bearish cues.

But this price fall for once can be chalked up to the expected cooldown after the rally, as the Relative Strength Index (RSI) breached into the overbought zone and has since recovered to the neutral zone.

But even before this happened, the DeFi protocols performance hadnt been above par exactly. The monthly borrowing noted on Compound has been heading in a southward direction since December, right after the bears attacked the crypto market.

As prices began falling, borrowers took a break since investors confidence in the crypto market started wavering. But since the Dapp was still liable to pay its lenders, the borrowing went down and eventually became negative. At its peak, over $1.9 billion went out of the protocol in January as borrowing remained put.

Compounds monthly payout has been exceeding the interest it accrues | Source: Dune AMBCrypto

However, the net borrowing is still negative, with over $327 million leaving the protocol.

On the whole, borrowers are suffering losses given COMPs recent price fall, which only rose by 56% around the March end-April rally before falling back to a mere 37 value on 12 April.

This sudden drop in borrowers numbers has been a big issue with the Anchor protocol as well. Anchor protocols pre dynamic earn rate of 20% APY ended up emptying the treasury which was then replenished with $450 million by the Luna Foundation Guard.

If the price goes up further, COMP could end up attracting more investors to its protocol.

The Vincent-Strus-Martin Ascension Spiraled into a Miami Heat Ascension Five Reasons Sports Network – Five Reasons Sports Network

When covering the Miami Heats scrimmage during training camp, there were two names that I walked away from that game with that were clearly playing at another level.

Gabe Vincent and Caleb Martin.

One guy fresh off a two-way contract, and the other brand new to it.

Martin came as a surprise for many, as this athletic kid, that recently played for Charlotte, was showcasing to be much more than just a simple athlete.

He showed that his jumper was becoming more consistent, and wasnt just some isolation player that some seemed to perceive him as coming in.

More than anything, he was a legitimate defensive piece that showed flashes of being a real rotation piece.

Then the month of January hit in the year 2022. His name was already getting more buzz after an electric performance against the Bucks mid-way through December, where his 28 points without Jimmy Butler or Bam Adebayo led to a much needed win over the defending champs.

But well, the calendar flip was pretty much a defensive tour.

He made DeAaron Foxs night uneven with a 5 of 12 night, but it was clear that they had something aside from the Adebayo and Tucker switches. Martin followed the Fox night up with the assignment of Steph Curry, which he bothered enough to shoot 3 of 17 from the field at home.

Yes, they ended up dropping both of those games, but something was brewing.

Shortly after that two-game stretch, he held Chris Paul to a 3 of 9 night, Trae Young to a 4 of 15 game, and Fred VanVleet went 6 of 16 from deep with only one 2 attempted.

The point guard tour was real, but it was the true understanding of what he could be on this team, combined with the overall improvements in his offensive game.

Rewinding back to Gabe Vincent, there werent a ton of expectations coming into the season. He was a situational piece when guys went down, leaving many saying that a back-up point guard may be a neccessity.

People were right, they did need a back-up 1. But that guy was Vincent himself.

When he first signed with Miami, he appeared to be an undersized shooter who would play mainly off the catch, which he showed flashes of. But last season, he had an uneven year shooting the ball from deep due to some mechanical shifts.

Yet while some focused on those numbers, he was rapidly excelling at the all around parts of his game.

He became the staple of Miamis 2-2-1 press that debuted last year next to Andre Iguodala, just due to the fact that his perimeter lateral quickness was for real, and he had a clear knack for the ball.

Coming into this season, he just bounced off that two-way contract, and the next step would be could he make minor improvements on the ball.

Well, the improvements werent minor.

He was pretty much thrown into the fire of point guard reps, and he proved that the off-season did a lot for his game. The pick and roll savviness was really something, the catch and shoot numbers jumped up from under 30% last season to 39% this year, and his mid-range/driving game had surged.

His mid-range pull-up stalled out at 29% last year, which spiked to 43% this season. That isnt gradual improvement. Thats turning the whole page.

Plus, speaking of big games mid-way through December, Vincent led Miami to back-to-back wins with a 26 point performance in Philly, then a 27 point night against the Magic. As the top guys kept dropping out of the lineup, these guys were ready to step up.

Not only are they great fillers, but theyre now potentially in a playoff rotation.

And when talking about certain guys stepping up, Vincents two-way companion Max Strus is the perfect example of that.

I wouldnt exactly say Strus scenario was completely aligned with the other two, since it was more about situation and opportunity for him. He constantly would get the same looks no matter if it was last year or this year, but the sample size being greater this time around allowed for a true evaluation period.

Among the top 50 players in 3 point attempts a game this season, which includes around 50 players, only one player shot a better percentage from deep than Strus, with the stipulation of playing at least half of the regular season games.

Desmond Bane edged him out, but Max Strus trailed him with a 41% shooting season from beyond the arc.

Its not easy to be that spark shooter who has to consistently perform as a guy with zero rhythm prior to entering, but he proved himself. Now he finds himself sitting in the starting lineup less than a week away from the start of the playoffs.

These 3 guys are extreme success stories for this Miami Heat developmental program, but theyre also examples of putting in the work, and performing at the highest level.

From fillers to playoff rotation.

It isnt everyday that you see that, but from the Heats perspective, they arent surprised when it happens.

AOL Knights of Columbus fish fry a great success – L’Observateur – L’Observateur

LAPLACE The Ascension of Our Lord Knights of Columbus fish fry has been a hallmark of the Lenten season in St. John the Baptist Parish for approximately 30 years.

The AOL Knights of Columbus Council 9623 served approximately 450 pounds of fried and grilled fish, 400 pounds of corn, and 200 pounds of potatoes each Friday from March 4 to April 8. Proceeds contributed to the Benjamin Piovan Scholarship fund, which will be awarded to two Ascension of Our Lord seventh graders who are continuing their education at St. Charles Catholic High School.

Grand Knight Mike Abbate said the annual scholarship, which covers tuition at St. Charles Catholic, is awarded based on a students patriotism and community involvement. Through a different program, Council 9623 also supports education through the Catholic Youth Leadership Award, presented to a boy and a girl each year.

While the fish fry is primarily used as a fundraiser for the Benjamin Piovan scholarship, proceeds can make an impact through various charities and disaster relief efforts.

This is one of our major fundraisers for the year, so its important we do really well. Whatever we have leftover goes toward other Knights of Columbus initiatives, including disaster relief, said Lloyd Schexnayder, a member of Council 9623. We have gone to Lake Charles, Port Arthur, Panama City, all over, providing meals after disasters. Were a nonprofit, so everything we collect goes back out.

Over the past several years, the Knights of Columbus have headed disaster relief efforts by cooking large pots of jambalaya and pastalaya for victims of natural disasters in neighboring states. The tables were turned in 2021 when it was Council 9623s own St. John Parish community crying out for help.

The AOL Knights of Columbus began collecting non-perishable food items and hygiene essentials at the start of the 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season, months before Hurricane Ida was a thought in anyones mind. When the monster hurricane hit on August 29, 2021, Council 9623 was prepared to provide aid to the community with baby items, bottled water, toilet tissue, paper towels, canned goods, cleaning supplies and more.

On September 11, 2021, a cooking team showed up to distribute 800 meals to impacted residents. With the help of Ascension of Our Lord Church Parish Pastor Cyril Buyera, Council 9623 was able to open a Hurricane Ida Supply Center located under the AOL School overhang. Disaster supplies were distributed to the community on weekends and some weekdays, amounting to 28,000 pounds of supplies handed out from September 11 to December 22.

The AOL Knights of Columbus also handed out 6,200 meals in September, 7,600 meals in October, 5,400 meals in November and more than 2,200 meals in December. The success of the Hurricane Ida response would not have been possible without the help of many local people and organizations, as well as fellow Knights of Columbus councils who delivered truckloads of supplies.

Council 9623 historian James Poche recalls seeing cars lined for miles down the streets for hurricane supplies. The Ascension of Our Lord Catholic School campus became a beacon of hope, not only during the Knights of Columbus disaster relief program, but also during the fish fry program that served the community through the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

I love working with the Knights of Columbus, Poche said. Ive been retired for about six years. I love doing this because I have time to do it. It gets me out the house, and the fish fry is my favorite project all year long.

Battle over carbon capture as tool to fight climate change – St. Paul Pioneer Press

BY DREW COSTLEY

Polly Glover realized her son had asthma when he was nine months old. Now 26, he carries an inhaler in his pocket whenever hes out and about in Prairieville, Louisiana, part of Ascension Parish.

He probably needs to leave Ascension quite frankly, Glover says, but he hasnt because this is his home and this is our family and this is our community.

The parish is part of the 85-mile span between New Orleans and Baton Rouge officially called the Mississippi River Chemical Corridor, more commonly known as Cancer Alley. The regions air quality is some of the worst in the United States, and in several places along the corridor, cancer risks are much higher than levels considered acceptable by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Glover says the air is terrible where she lives, but theres also great biodiversity osprey, eagles, migratory birds, deer, rabbits, fish and alligators among the regions lakes, rivers and wetlands. The environmental advocate has been working for 30 years to preserve the place shes loved since childhood.

Thats why she is wary of anything that might make air quality worse or threaten wildlife and her biggest fear now is that a $4.5 billion plant designed to capture climate-changing carbon and make clean-burning hydrogen fuel will actually do more harm to the Lake Maurepas basin.

The blue hydrogen energy plant is slated to be built and operated by Air Products and Chemicals, a multinational petrochemical company. The company says the plant will capture airborne carbon emissions created during production and put them safely underground a process called carbon capture and storage.

Sometimes I think people think youre kind of bubbling this in at the bottom of the lake, said Simon Moore, vice president of investor relations, corporate relations and sustainability at Air Products. You know, this is a mile below the Earths surface, where the geological formation of the rock has this porous space, which simply absorbs the CO2.

Still, Glover is worried. Im not a scientist. Im a mom who cares, she said. We have got to be better stewards of the environment and while reducing carbon emissions is necessary, injecting them into the basin is not the answer.

There are several other carbon capture and storage projects proposed or in the works throughout the U.S., including in Louisiana, Texas, Minnesota, Michigan, Iowa and California. Companies behind them maintain they can successfully remove carbon from the air to reduce pollution, then safely transport and store the carbon underground or do both.

In some cases, oil and gas companies are banking on this new technology to either help build new profit centers, such as plants that make hydrogen, or extend the lifespan of their fossil fuel facilities.

Carbon capture and storage projects are gaining traction since Congress approved $3.5 billion for them last year. The Global CCS Institute, a think tank seeking to advance these projects globally, called it the single largest appropriation of money for CCS in the history of the technology.

In the latest report from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the worlds top scientists said carbon capture and storage technology has to be part of the range of solutions to decarbonize and mitigate climate change. But they said solar and wind energy and electricity storage are improving faster than carbon capture and storage.

Opponents of carbon capture and storage maintain the technology is unproven and has been less effective than alternatives such as solar and wind at decarbonizing the energy sector.

Carbon capture is neither workable nor feasible, said Basav Sen, climate justice policy director for the Institute for Policy Studies, a progressive think tank based in Washington, D.C. Its merely an excuse for the fossil fuel industry to keep operating the way it does.

A study in late 2020 by researchers from the University of California, San Diego, found over 80% of 39 projects that have sought to commercialize carbon capture and storage ended in failure. The study cited lack of technological readiness as a top factor

But even if the technology was deployed successfully, several critics say the projects would pose threats to the public health of communities long plagued by air and water pollution.

First, they said any project that prolongs the lifespan of an existing industrial facility presents additional environmental harm by extending the amount of time it pollutes a community, which the IPCC report confirms.

Second, they noted that since carbon capture would require more energy to power the equipment, it would result in more air pollution because the technology can only catch a portion of the carbon emitted by a facility.

Howard Herzog, a senior research engineer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and pioneer of carbon capture and storage technology, disputed this in an interview with the Associated Press. But he acknowledged there is a risk in transporting and storing carbon.

In 2020, a pipeline carrying compressed carbon dioxide ruptured in the town of Satartia, Mississippi, which caused over 40 people to get hospital treatment and more than 300 to evacuate. The incident is cited by experts, advocates and residents who live near proposed carbon capture and storage projects to illustrate potential dangers of transporting carbon long distances.

Injecting carbon underground for storage could end up contaminating aquifers, according to Nikki Reisch, director of the climate and energy program for the Center for International Environmental Law.

Over 500 environmental organizations, including the law center, signed an open letter published in the Washington Post in July 2021, calling carbon capture and storage a false solution.

In response, the Carbon Capture Coalition, which advocates the technology, released its own letter in August with over 100 signatories. They pressed Congress to include investment in carbon capture and storage in any upcoming legislation.

Matt Fry, a state and regional policy manager with the Great Plains Institute, a Minneapolis-based climate and energy think tank, told AP the technology is essential to meeting mid-century climate goals.

The potential for a completely decarbonized, electrified world is a reality, Fry said. But were going to need to transition to get there. And its going to require carbon capture to address those emissions.

At the point of capture, Herzog said, the technology poses a very low threat to public health. Theres always a chance of some mishaps, he added, but on the overall scale of chemical plants, (the technology) is fairly benign.

Still, residents near proposed projects worry.

In Californias Central Valley agricultural region, Chevron, Microsoft and Schlumberger New Energy are collaborating to build a facility in the town of Mendota that will create energy by converting agricultural waste into carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas, then mixing it with oxygen to generate electricity with the promise of capturing 99% of the carbon from the process.

Chevron said it plans to inject the carbon underground into nearby deep geologic formations.

Thats concerning for Nayamin Martinez, who lives in the valley and is director of the Central California Environmental Justice Network. That worries us a lot, she said. What does that mean in terms of risk for contamination of drinking water?

Creighton Welch, a spokesperson for Chevron, said the process they plan to use is safe. CO2 capture, injection, and storage are not new technologies and have been conducted safely for decades, Welch said.

Back in Louisiana, Glover and other residents also fear carbon capture technology will affect the water. The carbon dioxide captured at the Air Products and Chemicals facility will be stored in sites such as under Lake Maurepas, an important wetland.

Kim Coates, who lives on the lakes northeast side, said its a buffer between the Gulf of Mexico and residents. But she said shes witnessed generations of destruction to that ecosystem through industrial development and, more recently, hurricanes and tropical storms.

Now Coates fears more of the same if carbon is stored under the lake. Weve seen the destruction over time with no one looking forward to what was going to happen in the future, she said.
