Inspired by Darwins theory1 of biological evolution, evolutionary computation attempts to automate the process of optimization and problem solving by simulating differential survival and reproduction of individual solutions. From the early 1950s, multiple well-documented attempts to make Darwins algorithm work on a computer have been published under such names as Evolutionary Programming12, Evolutionary Strategies13, Genetic Algorithms14, Genetic Programming15, Genetic Improvement16, Gene Expression Programming17, Differential Evolution18, Neuroevolution19, and Artificial Embryogeny20. While numerous variants different in their problem representation and metaheuristics exist21-24, all can be reduced to just two main approaches Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Genetic Programming (GP).

GAs are used to evolve optimized solutions to a particular instance of a problem such as Shortest Total Path25, Maximum Clique26, Battleship27, Sudoku28, Mastermind23, Light Up29, Graph Coloring30, integer factorization31, 32, or efficient halftone patterns for printers33, and so are not the primary focus of this paper. GPs purpose, from their inception, was to automate programming by evolving an algorithm or a program for solving a particular class of problems, for example an efficient34 search algorithm. Software design is the type of application most frequently associated with GPs35, but work in automated programming is also sometimes referred to as real programing, object-oriented GP, algorithmic programming, program synthesis, traditional programming, Turing Equivalent (TE) programming or Turing-complete GP36-38.

The sub-field of computation, inspired by evolution in general, and the Genetic Programing paradigm, established by John Koza in 1990s, in particular are thriving and growing exponentially. This is evidenced both by the number of practitioners and of scientific publications. Petke et al. observe enormous expansion of number of publications with the Genetic Programming Bibliography passing 10,000 entries By 2016 there were nineteen GP books including several intended for students 16. Such tremendous growth has been fueled, since the early days, by belief in the capabilities of evolutionary algorithms, and our ability to overcome obstacles of limited computational power or data as illustrated by the following comments:

If youve ever tuned in to football commentary youve probably heard talk about X, Y, and Z receivers. While these position names can change based on the system, theres a history behind this labeling method. And the Oregon offense has played a part in the evolution of these positions over the past decade.

The video above exemplifies the historical transition from traditional offensive sets to more modern spread sets. Georgia Tech was one of the last teams to run the Flexbone offense at the college level with the retirement of Paul Johnson in 2018. Georgia Tech made it evident they were going to join the modern era when they lined up in the Flexbone and then shifted into a spread formation on the first play of their 2019 spring football game.

Today, offenses have fewer running backs in the backfield and more players outside the tackles. With this change, wingbacks and fullbacks of yore have morphed into the X and Y receivers you see today.

X This wide receiver can be on or off the line of scrimmage. The first and third play above show how a passing play will be designed to open up space to get the X receiver the ball on intermediate and longer routes. The most recent example of a good X receiver is Dillon Mitchell in 2018.

Z The Z receiver has also been referred to as a slot or flanker. This player can also be on or off the line of scrimmage but is typically a smaller, quicker receiver. The second play above shows the Z being used in a shorter route when the defense focuses on stopping the X receiver. Oregon may not have had a prototype X receiver before the transfer of Juwan Johnson, but theyve had good Z receivers in Mycah Pittman, Jaylon Redd, and Johnny Johnson III.

Y The Y receiver is more of tight end type of player. However, modern offenses have hybridized the traditional tight end into player that can align with the lineman, split out wide, or line up in the backfield to block right or left. The final play above shows the versatility of theY position as Oregon utilizes Jacob Breeland as a run blocker and receiver.

Certain remnants of traditional offenses like the Wing-T and Flexbone are still utilized today, such as the jet sweep (video above) and pulling guards. With the spread offense, however, teams utilize one running back instead of three and now have two hybrid positions in the Z and Y receivers. That evolution has changed the game.

In the 2013 and 2014 seasons, Oregon brought the evolution of the hybrid athlete to an impressive level. Byron Marshall rushed for 1,038 yards in 2013, yet when Oregons all-time leading rusher Royce Freeman joined the team, the Ducks switched Marshall to the Z receiver position. Marshall proceeded to amass 1,003 yards and six touchdowns receiving.Oh, and he also rushed for 392 yards and a score.

Though it would be fun to imagine the Wing-T or the Flexbone offense with Marcus Mariota, Royce Freeman, Thomas Tyner, and Byron Marshall, the coaches at Oregon have evolved the receiver positions for the Ducks to take advantage of their unique spread offense and rush the nation by storm.

Multiple approaches used to investigate adaptive coloration of Dasymutilla gloriosa.

Driving across the arid American Southwest, one views miles upon miles of scrubby creosote bushes. Well-adapted to the hot, thirsty landscape, the evergreen shrub, also known as greasewood, chaparral and gobernadora, produces tufts of fluffy, white fruit capsules. Living among the plants are similarly fluffy white insects, difficult to distinguish from the fruit, that are, in fact, a species of wasps known as Thistle-down velvet ants.

Their scientific name is Dasymutilla gloriosa and theyre one of my favorites, says Utah State University biologist Joseph Wilson.

Looking at the velvet ant and creosote fruit side-by-side, its easy to imagine the fuzzy wasps white coloration evolved as camouflage.

Not so fast, Wilson says.

In the animal kingdom, there are relatively few examples of white being an adaptive color outside of arctic environments, he says. White coloration can be aposematic, meaning coloring meant to warn or repel predators, but it can also play a role in thermoregulation.

Wilson and USU colleagues Jeni Sidwell and James Pitts, along with Matthew Forister of the University of Nevada and Kevin Williams of the California Department of Food and Agriculture, discuss new findings about Thistle-down evolution in the July 15, 2020 issue of Biology Letters.

In 2015, the USU biologists identified North American velvet ants as one of the worlds largest known Mllerian mimicry complexes. Mimicry, a form of defense in which one animals copies another of a different species in appearance, actions or sound, is an evolutionary phenomenon scientists identified in the late 19th century.

Its logical to assume Thistle-down velvet ants evolved their appearance to hide from predators among fallen creosote fruits, says Wilson, associate professor in the Department of Biology at USUs Tooele campus. But the wasps preceded the arrival of the creosote bush to the American Southwest by millions of years. So we investigated other explanations for their white coloration.

The team surmised the wasps pale coloring could provide thermoecological benefits in their sizzling hot environment. The researchers investigated genetic data. They used reflectance spectrometry to compare spectral reflectance of the wasps and the creosote fruit. With a thermal imaging camera and other probes, the scientists measured the organisms external and internal temperatures.

Sampling extensive data and following varied analyses, the team concluded the velvet ants white coloration is an adaptation to the hot desert environment, rather than predation pressure.

We learned not to judge a book by its cover, Wilson says. We each looked outside of our narrow specializations to apply varied disciplines to the questions we were asking. When considering coloration, never assume non-humans view colors as humans do. Thistle-down velvet ants are white to us and look like creosote fruit, but we dont know exactly how they appear to the wasps predators.

Fascinating Evolution of White Thistle-Down Velvet Ants Which Are Actually Wasps in Disguise - SciTechDaily

The LKS Faculty of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed) has collaborated with Institut Pasteur, Paris, to develop an approach to evolve molecules which are entirely alien to biology. The researchers have demonstrated the approach by evolving molecules which stick to a malaria biomarker. Critically, these special non-biological molecules are able to carry out tasks which normal biological molecules are intrinsically unable to do. These molecules can, for example, be used to determine the type of malaria with which a patient is infected. The research has just been published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS), a top journal in the field of multidisciplinary science. One of the lead researchers of the study, Professor Julian Tanner, Professor and Associate Director (Teaching & Learning) of the School of Biomedical Sciences, Assistant Dean (Biomedical Sciences Curriculum), HKUMed, remarked, Evolution is a powerful idea that is at the centre of all of biology. This study harnesses the evolutionary idea of natural selection, but then applies it outside of the biological context, thus creating an evolution in a test tube approach. One can then use evolution instead of design to develop molecules which can solve challenges in diagnostics and therapeutics. If we can extend evolution well beyond the usual confines of biological molecules such as DNA and protein, then we can open an entire new toolbox which can transform medicine.

Background

Evolution is understood in biology as the process by which characteristics of organisms are inherited over successive generations under particular selective pressures. Evolution is guided by chance some members of a population are able to outcompete others which over time define the physical characteristics and behaviour of a species.

It is also possible to apply evolutionary selections to populations of molecules. In a similar fashion, molecules can be made to compete with each other for a particular characteristic. For example, this characteristic might be sticking to specific molecular markers which only exist in the presence of a disease. Such evolved molecules could then be used in diagnosing or treating a disease. This has previously been demonstrated for common biological molecules including DNA and proteins. However, it has always been a challenge to extend the idea of molecular evolution much beyond common biological molecules.

Study Results

The major challenge the team faced was how to develop an approach to allow point-of-care diagnosis of malaria that could distinguish when a patient is infected with Plasmodium falciparum parasites or Plasmodium vivax parasites. This is important as the two parasite species cause malaria with different outcomes and typically require different drug treatments. However, the point-of-care approaches which had previously been developed for malaria diagnosis typically were only able to determine whether a patient had malaria, but were unable to distinguish which parasite had caused the malaria.

To solve this challenge, the team developed and applied an entirely new approach where unusual cube chemistries, called cubanes, are included into DNA, and integrated into an evolution in a test tube approach. Cubanes are never observed in biology, and hence this is a rare example of applying evolutionary principles to an entirely non-biological system. The research team discovered new types of DNA incorporating these unusual cubane chemistries which perfectly fit the binding pocket of a malaria biomarker which specifically indicate Plasmodium vivax malaria infection.

This is amongst the first ever studies where non-biological molecules have been incorporated into a molecular evolution experiment. The study presents not only a way forward for better point-of-care diagnostics for malaria, but also opens up a new toolbox for the development of molecules for diagnosis and treatment of many diseases.

Previous Study Results

Over the last decade, the HKUMed team has been developing the use of aptamers for new approaches for diagnostics, particularly for the point-of-care diagnostics. The team had developed the idea of aptamers for malaria diagnostics with a previous study also published in PNAS in 2013, originally just using normal DNA molecules. Subsequently, the team developed a wide variety of point-of-care tests for malaria as published in Chemical Communications in 2015, American Chemical Society (ACS) Sensors in 2016 and Biosensors & Bioelectronics in 2018. The team demonstrated approaches for diagnosis of reproductive disorders published in Nature Communications in 2019. This is the first study where the team has extended the idea of aptamer selections out to chemistries which are alien to biology.

About the research team

The current study was led by both HKUMed and Pasteur Institut, Paris. The two lead investigators are Professor Julian Tanner, Professor and Associate Director (Teaching & Learning) of the School of Biomedical Sciences, Assistant Dean (Biomedical Sciences Curriculum), HKUMed, and Dr Marcel Hollenstein, a researcher at Pasteur Institut, Paris. Dr Cheung Yee-wai, then HKUMed researcher and Dr Pascal Rothlisberger, Pasteur Institut, Paris, are joint first authors. Other HKUMed researchers include Dr Andrew Kinghorn, Mr Young Lo, and Mr Alvin Wong.

HKUMed and Institut Pasteur collaborate to use an evolution - Mirage News

Asuka recently did an interview with Vicente Beltrn of ViBe & Wrestling to talk about a wide range of topics.

During the interview, she discussed her role in the womens evolution in the WWE.

Some fans have argued the change with the way that WWE looks at female talent came from several female talents who found their way in NXT. These talents include Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks, Becky Lynch, Bayley, among others.

That change in booking then made it to the main roster and women were then seen on the same level as the men.

According to Asuka, she wants to maintain her position in WWE and leave on top.

WWE has changed a lot since the WWE Evolution PPV, women did not have a leading role, there were no main events starring women. After Evolution on the panorama changed and now we have stellar battles, either individually or in pairs and all I want is to continue maintaining that level and continue to leave the womens division at the top. I consider that I came to WWE and completely changed the womens division and I am very proud of it.

It was something I had noticed about Vanity Fair myself, from the outside, that lack of representation. I was determined to change it when I took over as editor in chiefnot just as a corrective measure but because it is my job, and the magazines job, to center people who are visionaries, who are moving the culture forward. We are not bound to continue the cultural hierarchies we inherit. In my two-and-a-half-year tenure, with the same exceptions for groups and special issues, weve featured 10 Black cover subjectsfrom my first, Lena Waithe, in April 2018, to last months Janelle Mone to this months Viola Davis. And we know that Vanity Fairs evolution has resonated, because in the past two and a half years our audience on every platform has grown, including those of you who subscribe.

This month brings its own milestone. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first Vanity Fair cover made by a Black photographer. Dario Calmeses first V.F. assignment was a feature on Billy Porter a little more than a year ago. Since then, he has photographed the actors George MacKay and Adrienne Warren for us. This is his first major magazine cover, and we celebrate him and honor his vision at this heightened moment in American history. Calmese describes his cover concept as a re-creation of the Louis Agassiz slave portraits taken in the 1800sthe back, the welts. This image reclaims that narrative, transmuting the white gaze on Black suffering into the Black gaze of grace, elegance, and beauty.

Thelonious, he reads. Thelonious Sphere. Born 1918? Question mark. Dad laughs. U.S. jazz pianist and composer. It appears youre famous, Thelonious. Monk replies: Im famous. Aint that a bitch. Fame meant far less than his art. But he knew it made a difference.

Liverpools defeat to Arsenal means that they can no longer set a new top flight points record.

Jurgen Klopps side have 93 points to their name at the time of writing.

With two games of the season left to go, the most they can finish with is 99 points, one short of Manchester Citys record.

Its hard to imagine Liverpools players shedding too many tears over missing the 100-point mark when the champagne corks start flying at their title celebrations.

Nevertheless though, City will take some solace in the knowledge that their record is safe.

Its a record theyve held along with 11 different clubs - Preston, Sunderland, Aston Villa, Manchester United, Newcastle United, West Bromwich Albion, Arsenal, Leeds United, Liverpool, Everton and Chelsea.

Here, the Liverpool ECHO chart the progression of the top flights points total record.

1888/89 to 1890/91 Preston North End - 40 points

Preston went unbeaten in the very first Football League season, winning a total of 40 points. They also won the FA Cup, becoming the countrys first double winners and earning them the nickname The Invincibles.

1891/92 Sunderland - 42 points

The league expanded in 1891 to include two extra clubs. This meant four extra games in which to pick up points. It helped Sunderland beat Prestons record, winning the league with 42 points. The Black Cats won all of their home games during this campaign and remain the only side ever to do so.

1892/93 to 1898/99 Sunderland - 48 points

Sunderland were unbeaten at home once again, but two draws meant they didnt have a 100% record. They became the first club ever to score 100 goals in a season.

1899/00 to 1904/05 Aston Villa - 50 points

Aston Villas fifth league title may have been won by a record number of points, but with the season expanded to 34 games by this time it was actually a lower points per game average (1.5) than any of the previous three records - 1.6 for both of Sunderlands titles and 1.8 for Prestons.

1906/06 to 1906/07 Liverpool - 51 points

The First Division was expanded to 20 clubs for the first time this season which meant each side played 38 games. Thats four more than the previous season and 16 more than the first. Newcastle United matched Liverpools points total the following year, before Manchester United surpassed them both the season after.

1907/08 Manchester United - 52 points

The first of Manchester Uniteds 20 league titles was won in only their second season back in the top flight after 12 years in the Second Division. They won the title again in 1910/11 with the exact same number of points.

1908/09 to 1911/12 Newcastle United - 53 points

Newcastles third title in just five seasons saw them finish seven points ahead of second placed Everton, and nine ahead of local rivals Sunderland. The Magpies tally of 53 points was matched the following season by league winners Aston Villa.

1912/13 to 1914/15 Sunderland - 54 points

Sunderland and Aston Villa were both chasing the double in 1912/13. The Black Cats managed to win the league four points ahead of second placed Villa. However, it was the Villains who went on to win the Cup, beating Sunderland one-nil in the final.

1919/20 to 1929/30 West Bromwich Albion - 60 points The First Division was expanded to 22 teams when football returned after WWI in 1919/20, adopting a format that would remain in place until the 1987/88 campaign. It meant clubs played an additional four games compared to previous seasons. West Brom won the title with 60 points at the same points per game ratio, 1.4, as Sunderland had averaged to set the previous record. West Brom equalled their own record in 1922/23, and Sheffield Wednesday also matched it in 1929/30.

1930/31 to 1959/60 Arsenal - 66 points

This was not only Arsenals first title, but the Souths first title as well. The Gunners scored an incredible 127 goals on their way to the title. That would have been a record at the time had it not been for second placed Aston Villa scoring 128 in the same season. It does, however, remain a record number of goals scored by a title winner to this day. Tottenham equalled Arsenals record in 1960/61. The 31 seasons that this record stood for is the longest of any of them.

1968/69 to 1977/78 Leeds United - 67 points

Leeds United lost just two games as they romped home to their first ever league title under the stewardship of the late, great Don Revie. United were unbeaten at home and conceded a total of just 26 goals all season, giving them the tightest defence of any title winner since Preston in 1889 (15 goals) who played 20 games fewer.

1978/79 to 1980/81 Liverpool - 68 points

Bob Paisley guided Liverpool to their third league title in four years. His side were unbeaten at home, conceded just four goals at Anfield and another 12 away. No league title winner would concede fewer over the course of a season until Chelsea in 2005.

1981/82 to 1983/84 Liverpool - 87 points

The 1921/82 campaign was the first where teams were awarded three pints for a win as opposed to just two. It saw Liverpool smash their own record by nearly 20 points. Their record of 26 wins and nine draws would only have left them with 61 points under the old system which would have been less than Arsenal won the league with back in 1931.

1984/85 to 1992/93 Everton - 90 points

Howard Kendalls Everton very nearly completed a domestic and European treble in 1985, but fell just short. The Toffees finished 13 points ahead of runners-up Liverpool in the league. They also won the Cup Winners Cup but lost the FA Cup final three days later to Manchester United in extra time.

1993/94 to 2003/04 Manchester United - 92 points

Manchester United recorded their highest ever points total in the 93/94 season. They won other titles more convincingly and by larger points margins, but they never finished with more than the 92 they won in this campaign. Thats because this was the penultimate season in which 42 games were played in the top flight. United average 2.2 points per game in this season compared to 2.4 per game when they won the title in 1999/00 when they finished with 91 points.

2004/05 to 2016/17 Chelsea - 95 points

Chelsea conceded just 15 goals in Jose Mourinhos first season in charge of Chelsea. Its the joint lowest number of goals conceded along with Preston in 1888/89. However, Preston played just 22 games that season compared to Chelseas 38. The west London club averaged 2.5 points per game, which was the most of any title winners at that time.

2017/18 to present Manchester City - 100 points

On Tuesday, A seven-man panel of the Supreme Court led by Justice Olabode Rhodes-Vivour ruled that virtual court sittings are not unconstitutional, null or void.

This decision was made during the hearing of separate suits filed by the Attorneys-General of Lagos and Ekiti states on the adoption of remote hearings by judges in their states. According to the panel, the suits filed by the Attorneys-General of both states were speculative as the suits did not disclose how virtual proceedings had negatively affected the interest or right of anyone.

As of today, virtual sitting is not unconstitutional

Members of the panel dismissed the fear said to be entertained by many judges as to the constitutionality of remote hearings in the country.

They maintained that the Chief Justices of the states that had issued practical directives to provide for virtual sitting when convenient had the duty to enforce the directive.

Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), Lagos State AG, and Olawale Fapohunda, Ekiti State AG have thus withdrawn the suits after members of the apex court panel described the suits as speculative.

The Covid-19 pandemic has continued to interrupt traditional methods of doing things, leading to the introduction of novel approaches. To ensure that the justice system does not come to a standstill due to the lockdown, some senior Lawyers wrote to the CJN to consider adoption of remote court sitting.

In hiscapacity as the Chairman of the National Judicial Council (NJC), the CJN set upa 10-man committee headed by Justice Olabode Rhodes-Vivour. The committee wasto come up with urgent practical strategic measures to ensure courts continueto function despite the lockdown.

After much deliberations, the committee among other recommendations in line with federal governments guidelines for taming the spread of COVID-19, recommended the use of technology by way of virtual sitting in court proceedings, Both the CJN and NJC approved of it.

The National Judicial Council (the NJC) released Guidelines for Court Sittings and Related Matters in the Covid-19 Period (the Guidelines). The Guidelines are intended to aid the various courts to conduct proceedings remotely in order to meet the ends of justice.

In particular, these guidelines deal with time-bound cases, matters not requiring oral evidence (except those of extremely urgent nature) and matters ripe for judgment. The rules also aim to ensure the safety of judicial officers and workers, legal practitioners, litigants and the general public.

The practice directions state that cases for virtual proceedings shall be stated on the Cause List, posted on the courts website and communicated to counsel and parties, either by e-mail, WhatsApp, text messages or any other electronic means. It also allows for Service of court processes to be effected by e-mails, WhatsApp or as may be directed by the court. The printout of the same shall be sufficient proof of service.

Virtual proceeding is hereby adopted for adjudication in the Federal High Court.Virtual proceedings can be either by Zoom, Skype or any other audio-visual platform approved by the court.

The first virtual court sitting in Nigeria was held on May 4 2020, at the Ikeja High Court, Lagos. The outcome of that case was the sentencing to death of a driver, Olalekan Hameed, for the murder of 76-year old Mrs Jolasun Okunsanya, on December 1, 2018.

In line with Lagos State Judiciary Remote Hearing of Cases COVID-19 Pandemic Period Practice Direction, the court session was held online via a video app, Zoom, between the hours of 11am and 2pm.

The judge, defendant, his team of counsels, the prosecution team, and all witnesses participated in the session remotely from different locations via the Zoom app.

At theconclusion of the session, the judge gave the verdict, The sentence ofthis court upon you, Olalekan Hameed, is that you be hanged by the neck untilyou are pronounced dead and may the Lord have mercy upon your soul. This is thevirtual judgement of the court.

Speaking about this first virtual session, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN), said the move will help in making the administration of criminal justice in the country more efficient.

The proceedings of the Lagos High Court conducted online otherwise known as remote courts is revolutionary and the same thing has happened today at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja where three courts also sat using virtual technology. So, we commend their lordship because this will assist in achieving smooth and effective administration of justice.

It is common to witness resistance to change when these changes initiate a new order of things. The use of technology in virtual court sittings and the legal system is a contrast from the traditional system which the Nigerian legal system has previously relied on.

Following the decision to approve virtual court sittings, many have resisted the decision as unconstitutional. Judges who have expressed their reservations over this decision hinge their opposition on Section 36 (3) and (4) of the Constitution which provide that:

(3) The proceedings of a court or the proceedings of any tribunal relating to the matters mentioned in subsection (1) of this section (including the announcement of the decisions of the court or tribunal) shall be held in public.

(4) Whenever any person is charged with a criminal offence, he shall, unless the charge is withdrawn, be entitled to a fair hearing in public within a reasonable time by a court or tribunal

Theyquestion the acceptance of a court hearing through Zoom or Skype as beenconsidered to be held in a public place. Majority questionthe presence of infrastructures to allow the conduct of virtual courtproceedings.

The Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice Munta Abimbola, says the state has no infrastructure in place for virtual court proceedings

We dont have any infrastructure that will make virtual court proceedings possible, but we make use of other procedures so as to open the court during this COVID-19 period

Others held that court proceedings or hearings conducted via social media platforms or technological innovation would be deemed illegal until a bill is passed into law that indicates otherwise. The Supreme Court says an amendment bill is already been deliberated upon by the House of Assembly.

Virtual court sittings come with a number of advantages. It makes it more convenient for the parties involved in the court case to participate from their various locations especially during pandemics such as the COVID-19 outbreak.

Virtual court sittings could also eliminate huge transportation costs especially involving witnesses from different States or Countries.

With proper documentation now enforced over the internet, Tech-enabled legal research would be faster, more convenient and more transparent

It will tackle the hydra-headed problem of delay in the judiciary and help in eliminating corruption because e-files will make it more transparent for litigants and lawyers to pay their money directly into the purse of the judiciary rather than the current system whereby court official have become more like businessmen at the expense of Justice

However,without the right technological tools and skills invested in the adoption ofvirtual court sittings, it poses a number of challenges.

Many of the judges, particularly at the high court level and the Court of Appeal, were of the view that there are constitutional hurdles to cross before Nigeria can adopt a system of remote hearing of cases.

They opine that some expected judicial outcomes from some of these irregular provisions of virtual court proceedings online may not stand the test of the law, as they are likely going to create loopholes which parties could exploit on appeal when the trial is not in their favour

We need to amend our procedure rules that never contemplated proceedings like this and make adequate proceedings for some of the things that would come up during virtual proceedings

In other to carry out hybrid or fully virtual court sittings, it is expected that the Nigerian courts provide fast-speed and reliable internet connectivity. Remote participants of the process need to have hardware devices such as desktops, laptops, tablets and smartphones.

For decades,poor power supply remains one of the major factors affecting digital progressin various sectors across Nigeria. Interruptions in power supply challenges thevirtual court system.

Internet connectivity is another major challenge in Nigeria. With a significant number of High courts located in remote places, this challenge is heightened. The level of broadband penetration in Nigeria is still quite low compared to that of other countries. Because of this, there may be lags in data speed for use to process information. The possibilities of an unprepared counsel to feign poor connectivity is not far-fetched.

Lack ofcompetencies among legal practitioners in the use of online resources anddigital platforms could also discourage the adoption of these virtual courtsittings.

A fourth overlooked challenge which was raised by Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN) is that of internet security.

The capacity of fraudsters to hack into sensitive political cases, cases involving husband and wife and custody of children, cases involving distribution of estates of people who could become public figures and then the issue of authenticity of the document uploaded such as C of O, WAEC, university certificates etc. How do we cope in this age of manipulation and Photoshop?

To checkthese challenges, it calls for adequate funding. The different tiers ofgovernment have to be willing to cater for the increased budget that isassociated with these innovations. Investment decisions such as purchasinglaptops with long battery life, investment inverters should be embraced.

Across the world, other countries including USA, Australia, Canada and Kenya have embraced court hearings through video conferencing and teleconferences.

Opposition teams, rather than simply putting a full-back on him or doubling up when down the wing, would find it excruciating trying to pin him down as he drifts, darts and devastates in the final third.

In this writers opinion, Scottish football hasnt seen the best of Drey Wright just yet.

The 25-year-old was emerging as an essential member of the St Johnstone team having signed from Colchester United in the summer of 2018. There was an unknown factor but also pace, confidence and directness. Until 14 league games into the season that is before his campaign was ended following cruciate ligament damage.

This past term it was more of a slow burner. While Boyle came back flying, Wrights recovery was more gradual. Slowly but surely he re-emerged as a vital component under Tommy Wright who was desperate to get him on a new contract. He started the last six league games where Saints were unbeaten.

There is a lot to like about the Englishman. Watching him you can see similarities to Boyle. The way he dips, ducks and slaloms with the ball trying to evade defenders, arms outstretched ensuring balance is maintained.

When he gets the ball his first thought is about going forward but rarely looks to run down blind alleys. Instead, quickly assessing his options before making a decision on how to proceed. It is easy to see him being drilled as part of a structured Saints side under Wright, making sure to be economical and effective without allowing for his adventurous to take over.

When he decides to attack he looks to go down the outside the full-back almost every time. Boyle has grown more confident of driving in field but Wright likes to stay wide, front up his opponent and use his pace to blow past them or simply suggest he is about to accelerate, allowing him space to whip in a cross.

Hibs fans looking at stats will see a player who has not scored or created a lot of goals. If ever there was a game or period of a game to act as microcosm of Wright in the final third it was St Johnstones draw at Ross County in February.

In the final 15 minutes he could have helped Saints clinch the win on a number of occasions. He showed his positivity and pace but also that lack of cutting edge as he sent a good chance over the bar before squandering an even better one much to the ire of better-placed team mates.

Yet, when you see the quality of his crossing and the areas he puts the ball into, it is surprising that his assists across his two campaigns in Scotland is four.

There is certainly an argument he needs to be more precise when in the final third, sending the ball to a team-mate rather than in an area he thinks the team-mate is or will be.

In Kevin Nisbet and Christian Doidge he will potentially have two excellent targets to hit at Easter Road this coming season. The relationship with Doidge could be particularly profitable for Hibs if worked upon.

Hibs are getting much more than a quick and direct winger. They are also getting a defensively diligent and disciplined player.

Wright said: "I know Ill be expected to bring goals and assists, to help bring drive and energy to contribute in the attacking areas, but I also want to build a good relationship with the full-backs and make sure I can offer them some protection.

Positionally he is very good. Getting back behind the ball, supporting the full-back and getting himself into areas where he can intercept and put the team on the counter-attack.

He may not quite have the defensive fortitude to be constantly blocking crosses but he wont be found wanting and has a willingness to put opponents under pressure.

The relationship with the full-back is important to the winger and he can use it to his advantage going forward, looking to bring his team-mate into play, almost as a decoy or to create space for himself.

Wright may have been the first of three signings on Friday but it is perhaps fair to say he was the least unheralded. In turn, however, he may just be the most interesting of the trio.
