Apple Teams Up With HBCUs to Bring Coding and Creativity Opportunities to Communities Across the US – Business Wire

CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Apple today announced it is deepening its existing partnerships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), adding 10 more HBCU regional coding centers that will serve as technology hubs for their campuses and broader communities. This effort is part of Apples Community Education Initiative, designed to bring coding, creativity, and workforce development opportunities to learners of all ages.

Last month, Apple launched a new Racial Equity and Justice Initiative focused on challenging systemic barriers to opportunity for communities of color by advancing education, economic equality, and criminal justice reform efforts.

Apple is committed to working alongside communities of color to advance educational equity, said Lisa Jackson, Apples vice president of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives. We see this expansion of our Community Education Initiative and partnership with HBCUs as another step toward helping Black students realize their dreams and solve the problems of tomorrow.

Launched last year, Apples Community Education Initiative now extends to 24 locations across the US 12 of which are HBCUs and 21 of which predominately serve majority Black and Brown students. Across the country, these partnerships have already introduced thousands of students and adult learners to coding and app design, using Apples Everyone Can Code and Everyone Can Create curricula.

Apple has been working with Tennessee State University for the past two years to launch and expand the schools HBCU C2 initiative, which brings coding and creativity experiences to all 100-plus HBCUs. Tennessee State University now serves as a national hub for training educators and supporting its peer institutions as HBCUs expand coding and creativity opportunities to their own communities. A recent virtual HBCU C2 summit brought together nearly 300 educators from across the HBCU community to share best practices and hear from colleagues about workforce development, connecting with their communities, and bringing coding to students of all ages.

Dr. Robbie Melton is Tennessee State Universitys associate vice president of the SMART Global Technology Innovation Center and dean of Graduate and Professional Studies. She is also a champion of the HBCU C2 initiative. She is proud of what the program has already accomplished, and sees unlimited potential for the future.

In two years, I want all HBCUs to be coding and creating, said Melton. In two years, youre going to see many more people of color entering the STEM workforce and in two years were going to double the number of Black women in technology through this program.

Ten HBCUs, which have been working alongside Apple and Tennessee State University for the past year, will now become hubs to promote coding in their broader communities: Arkansas Baptist College, Central State University, Claflin University, Dillard University, Fisk University, Lawson State Community College, Morehouse College, Prairie View A&M University, Southern University at Shreveport, and Tougaloo College. Apple expects to double the number of HBCU partners by the end of this summer, expanding the network of schools offering coding, creativity, and career pathway opportunities.

Each hub is designed to create a multiplier effect, building capacity at the HBCUs that extends beyond the campus through partnerships with local K-12 schools, community partners, local governments, and other community stakeholders. Melton views the added regional hubs as a key element of the programs holistic approach.

A hub is a core of empowerment that goes beyond the campus, said Melton. Its about going into the community, into the home, into businesses so that when people code, it becomes part of their lives and its helping them solve big problems. This initiative is going to help those who have been broken through COVID-19, broken through racism and its going to empower them through knowledge and skills.

Over the past year, Southern University at Shreveport in Louisiana has started to gradually introduce Apple coding and creativity curricula to students, faculty, staff, and community members. Special Assistant to the Chancellor for Institutional Priorities Dr. Sharron Herron-Williams has seen the effect it has had. Our students are blossoming, she said. We invited community business leaders to our Coding Academy and they saw the work we were doing one food truck owner asked the students to design him an app to help track his trucks. This fall, our team is going to start working with him to make that app a reality.

Herron-Williams graduated from Stillman College in Alabama and sees the Apple expansion as a game changer for education within the HBCU community.

This is causing a resurgence at HBCUs a renewed interest in technology as something that can help design the future, she said. Because so many HBCUs have been faced with financial challenges, they have been more focused on how do we keep the doors open rather than how do we continue to grow and expand more programs to make HBCUs remain attractive to everyone. So this Apple initiative is helping give HBCUs their energy back.

Later this month, educators from the 10 HBCUs will be part of a group of nearly 500 teachers and community leaders taking part in a virtual Community Education Initiative Coding Academy that Apple is hosting for all Initiative partners. Educators will learn the building blocks of coding with Swift, Apples easy-to-learn coding language. Participants will work in teams to design app prototypes to address real community challenges. Businesses Have More Data Than Ever Before, But Do They Measure What They Manage? – Forbes

Do each of your team members have tangible metrics that they can use to manage their own ... [+] performance?

We love data. Weve been talking about artificial intelligence and machine learning for years. We love the big five tech firms (Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple, and Microsoft), masters of data, even if they come with potential costs when it comes to security and privacy. As we look to the future, theres one prediction we all can make: There will be lots more data and well struggle with the same problem. What are we using it for?

There are two reasons we collect and use data: to monitor performance (reactive) and to innovate (proactive). Most companies monitor a number of metrics if they didnt their businesses would be put at risk way too often. But not enough companies use data proactively. Proactive use of metrics, in contrast to reactive use, is strategic. Its about using the data that you have to find new opportunities and to think about a business differently. Innovative companies do this daily. Stodgy companies may do it as part of strategic planning on an annual or even a five- or 10-year basis. But its hard to be adaptive and stay ahead of the market without proactivity.

Proactive management isnt about boiling the ocean. Instead, its about looking at an issue first and finding data to prove or disprove a theory. Once its proven, that metric becomes the mantra. And when a goal is reached, its time to find a new opportunity.

This is the approach some strategy consulting firms use. After conducting an initial assessment of a company, looking both internally and externally at competitors and the market, they help to set an agenda for CEOs a short list of metrics (generally no more than five) that become the focus of the organization. This approach upends business as usual and delivers a successful corporate transformation in 12-18 months. Its effective because it gives companies focus: measure what you need to manage. The rest becomes a distraction.

Most companies, however, dont do this. They collect and store reams of data, but might not organize or catalogue it in ways that make it easy to access or use. They have metrics to monitor, but not necessarily to manage or lead. They likely report (at least internally) on metrics that are accessible or traditional, but may not be reporting dynamically on what could be the most impactful. Their reports may be informational, but not actionable. Similarly, individuals at these companies have jobs they do, but dont have the ability to measure the impact of their efforts. Most importantly, the leaders at their companies dont understand that they are missing opportunities. How could they? No one is looking at the data. Even though they think they are.

At many firms, metrics are standardized across departments. This helps executives and senior officers look across business units and competitors to see how the company is performing in terms that they understand. For that reason, they are often the types of metrics you learn in business school, like market share or throughput. But limiting the types of data we look at and who has access to information prevents companies from maximizing their value, for a number of reasons.

None of these challenges, however, is insurmountable and you likely dont need artificial intelligence or machine learning to get there. You do, however, need greater transparency, empowerment, and a questioning culture.

When it comes to data, many businesses struggle with transparency what should they make available to whom. But the real issue isnt transparency; its trust. When employees are trusted, they feel more connected to the business and are often more engaged.

When information isnt accessible, we make it harder for people to question, challenge, or innovate. But, if we make the information accessible, we give employees the space to take more interest in the business and to get creative. That is where new insights and innovation come from. They are much harder to find when everyone keeps their heads down.

Of course there may be bad actors, so trade secrets and personal information should still be kept under strict controls. But in all of the data we collect, how much really do we have to protect?

When executives spend their time monitoring metrics, they cant spend their time looking for more strategic opportunities. Focusing on strategy requires different data and a different approach. To create more space for strategy and innovation, leaders have to empower the managers that work for them. That can be hard for some: Empowerment is delegation without control. But leadership isnt about control; its about influencing others to do more and to be better. So leave the running of the business to the managers. Everyone will be better off.

One way to empower managers is to give them goals, by being clear about your expectations for the outputs from their teams. Let them work with their teams to determine what they would need to measure to manage the work themselves. That gives each individual on the team clarity on how their efforts impact the organization and accountability for delivering on their metric. When they are empowered and challenged, you may be surprised by how they approach the problem and what they come up with.

Leaders look to change the conversation, so metrics for executives should be used to point out what we can do to be better, not to flex the muscles we already have. That makes them strategic. Whether its an internal strategy team or a data-driven insights team, having a group that is tasked with challenging the status quo and using metrics to look at the business differently daily can create the same types of opportunities that the CEOs agenda provides. Just make sure to keep that focus. If a new metric is introduced, something else should fall off. Its no longer the priority. When goals are achieved, new metrics or ideas are needed and that analytical team will be the group trained to help.

Metrics do matter, but metrics alone dont do much. Individuals be they managers or leaders have to have the right mindset when looking at the data. If the mindset is one of stability lets just keep the ship afloat then monitoring is what matters, but change cant happen.

Instead, we can create cultures where inquisition is expected. Encourage critical thinking and challenging the status quo. Have your employees ask questions of management about why the company does things in certain ways and then help them find the data to test if another approach would be better. Or carve out time for them to develop questions about the business and then help them work to answer them. Who knows what they might uncover? After all, doing the work day in and day out does give them a very different perspective and a more nuanced understanding that can be more valuable than leadership sometimes remembers.

While I dont want to underplay the importance of monitoring performance, its active management and strategic leadership that benefit most from metrics. As leaders, we want to ask the hard questions and challenge the business. Metrics at best give us new insights when they are constantly being re-evaluated. At worst, they at least give us direction, and the wind is always changing.

Study reveals key genetic mutations of nonsmokers –

A team of researchers yesterday unveiled the key genetic mutations of nonsmoking lung cancer patients, aiming to develop early diagnostic tools and precision medicine for the disease.

The study was a product of Taiwans participation in the US-led National Cancer Moonshot program since 2016, when Academia Sinica signed a memorandum of understanding with the US National Cancer Institute, Institute of Chemistry director Chen Yu-ju () told a news conference in Taipei.

While nearly 80 percent of lung adenocarcinoma patients in the US are chain smokers, more than half of the patients in Taiwan are nonsmokers, she said, adding that 93 percent of female patients do not smoke.

It is a feature shared by many other East Asian countries, but the reason was unclear, she said, adding that the study was the first in East Asia to unravel the mystery.

Along with the US Clinical Proteomic Tumor Analysis Consortium, they studied tumor progression of patients in Taiwan and the US, she said.

Both studies were published in the journal Cell on Thursday last week and featured on its cover, showing an image of stargazers looking at a constellation that represents cancerous growth.

In Taiwan, up to 74 percent of female never-smokers (younger than 60 years old) showed higher mutation signatures of APOBEC a family of proteins related to RNA editing, Chen said.

The team also identified a correlation between high APOBEC signatures and good responses to immunotherapy treatment, making APOBEC a potential biomarker for early diagnosis, she added.

Some environmental carcinogens might be drivers in early carcinogenesis, as indicated by the teams findings about the metabolism and detoxification of carcinogens in females older than 70, Chen said.

Through the study, the team hopes to raise public awareness of the potential carcinogenesis of food additives, such as nitrosamine, which is used in fermented tofu and preserved radish, nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAHs) found in vehicle exhaust, cooking and secondhand smoke, as well as hereditary factors, Chen said.

As lung cancer symptoms mostly appear in late stages, most people have limited options other than immunotherapy and chemical therapy, which are costly, said National Taiwan University Hospital Division of Thoracic Surgery head Chen Jin-shing (), who provided clinical samples for the study.

The study helps with the development of screening tools through blood testing, which would allow high-risk groups for lung cancer to avoid carcinogenic substances or behaviors, he said.

The study is the first phenomenal outcome of Taiwans Cancer Moonshot, with more expected to come, said former vice president Chen Chien-jen (), now a distinguished research fellow at the institutions Genomics Research Center.

However, the program has only received four years of funding, which is to end next year, Chen Yu-ru said.

The funding has shrunk annually, she added, while expressing the hope that the government would continue to support the program.

Published inNature,the National Lung Matrix Trial (NLMT) is the worlds largest precision medicine clinical trial for non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, funded by Cancer Research UK (CRUK) and supported by the charitys Stratified Medicine Programme Phase 2 (SMP2) screening platform.

A 25 million collaboration with Pfizer, AstraZeneca and other pharmaceutical companies, and with support from the NHS, the NLMT matches different treatments to different groups of patients based on genetic changes in their cancer.

Using an innovative trial design that incorporates multiple treatment arms, NLMT allows for a more flexible and informed approach than traditional clinical trials. Each arm tests a different targeted treatment matched to a different genetic subtype of NSCLC.

The trials adaptive approach makes it possible for new drugs and combinations to be added as soon as they become available or retired quickly and easily if evidence suggests they arent effective.

Patients who sign up to take part in NLMT are genetically screened by the Cancer Research UK's SMP2 to understand more about their tumour type, and whether they possess the relevant genetic signatures to be matched to a targeted treatment.

Since the trial opened to recruitment in May 2015 until November 2019, 288 patients have been recruited to the 19 targeted treatment cohorts on the trial.

Results revealed key learnings on the use of precision medicine, such as how the appropriate pre-clinical work is essential in defining appropriate biomarker-drug combinations to test in the clinic, on ensuring that the best drugs available are used to hit the genomic targets, the scale of attrition from large screening platforms, and the importance of analysing and publishing outcome data of an ongoing study.

The attrition rate was high with only a 5% of SMP2 patients receiving treatment on NLMT. As trials often come towards the end of the patient journey, cancer progression might make patients too unwell to be recruited onto trials. Targeted therapy trials should take place much earlier in the cancer journey and use blood based genomic testing for fast turn-round of the information needed to match patients to drugs.

Lead authorProfessor Gary Middleton, Medical Oncologist at the University of Birmingham, said: This study provides data on how the next wave of trialling targeted therapies to treat complex cancers should be designed. This is the first trial of its kind, the novel Bayesian design allows outcome data from open cohorts that are still recruiting to be reported alongside closed cohorts, whereas previous umbrella studies have only published the results of completed arms and cohorts.

"We found genomically complicated tumours are hard to treat with targeted therapy, especially with monotherapy. The models we test drugs on are too simplistic - they dont represent the genomic complexity of the tumour, or the trajectory of how they rapidly evolve. We need models that take into account the complexity and trajectory of a human tumour to decide if a drug is going to work.

Professor Pam Kearns, Director of Birminghams Cancer Research UK Clinical Trials Unit and University of BirminghamsInstitute of Cancer and Genomic Sciences, said: The National Lung Matrix Trial is a landmark complex innovative design trial and represents a step-change in our understanding of how to develop precision medicine in challenging to treat cancers.

NLMT patient Paul Inett, 72 years old, said: I was diagnosed with stage four metastatic lung cancer in late April 2015 that had spread to glands in my chest. I was referred to Professor Gary Middleton at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and was recruited onto the National Lung Matrix Trial. Fortunately my biopsy showed a genetic marker that matched to one of the treatment arms on the trial and received a targeted cancer drug. This ground breaking research saved my life. Im now able to live a relatively active life including spending time with my family and taking exercise classes at my local gym.

Next steps in the NLMT are to continue recruiting patients. A new combination arm has just been added to the study and opened earlier in June. There will also be further publications from the individual arms and cohorts, and translational laboratory work.

Apple Working to Remove Non-Inclusive Terms Across its Eco-System – Beebom

In light of an industry-wide shift away from racially-insensitive terminology, Apple has announced that it, too, is working to replace non-inclusive language across its developer ecosystem. The changes will be implemented within Xcode, platform APIs, documentation and open source projects, the company said.

These changes began on June 22 with the beta software and developer documentation released at WWDC20. (We are) moving to terms such as allow list and deny list, and main as the default SCM branch in Xcode 12, the company wrote in a blog post on Thursday. Developer APIs with exclusionary terms will also be removed. The company says it plans to introduce replacements across internal codebases and public APIs. It will also be applicable to open source projects, such as WebKit and Swift.

Apples announcement follows a similar decision from fellow Silicon Valley tech behemoth, Google. The search giant, last month, announced plans to drop gender-insensitive and racially-demeaning terms from its codebase. According to the companys code style guide, it will replace words such as blacklist and whitelist with blocklist and allowlist.

Meanwhile, Linus Torvalds has also announced his decision to abolish terms like master/slave in the Linux kernel. The organization has reportedly formulated a new policy that aims to replace racially insensitive terminologies with neutral alternatives.

The developments come in the wake of widespread protests against racism and police brutality in the US. Ever since the protests against police brutality in the US broke out after the killing of George Floyd, several companies including Google, Twitter, GitHub have taken steps to make the development community more racially-inclusive and gender-neutral.

This Really is our Final Chance to Act on Climate – Ecosystem Marketplace

15 July 2020 | The story of our warming planet can be told by degrees. The global thermostat has gone up 1 degree Celsius since the Industrial Revolution, and rivers of meltwater are now coursing off Greenlands glaciers. Two degrees could mean crop failures and 500,000 deaths from malnutrition a year. Three degrees would be a hotter world than our species has ever experienced: The last time the temperatures rose that high was 2 million years before the evolution of homo sapiens.

Creep up another 2 degrees, and it could lead to the greatest mass extinction in earths history. To paraphrase Ron Burgundy, things escalate quickly.

If you are like most people, you have a sense that climate change is bad, but would be hard-pressed to explain the exact consequences of each additional degree of heat. A few degrees of warming doesnt sound that bad, maybe no more dangerous than nudging up your thermostat. So at what point do sweaty summers and mild winters turn into extinction and the collapse of civilization?

A new book fills that knowledge gap: Our Final Warning: Six Degrees of Climate Emergency by Mark Lynas, an influential environmentalist in England. Lynas is known for his ability to spin stultifying scientific evidence into compelling prose and for conducting long-simmering public debates with other public intellectuals. Back in 2007, Lynas published another book, Six Degrees: Our Future on a Hotter Planet, but in the intervening years the climate changed so rapidly that he decided it needed not just an update, but a top-to-bottom rewrite.

As of 2015, a world warmed by 1 degree is reality, not a speculative future. Sea levels have climbed 6 centimeters, and evidence that fossil-fuel emissions are amplifying hurricanes has solidified. Theres so much new evidence that Lynas had to start over and write an entirely new book built on the same structure as the old one.

Lynas recently spoke with Grist about how much has changed in the last 15 years, how the COVID 19 pandemic resembles climate change, and how he manages to live happily while carrying the knowledge of looming doom.

Q.There was a similar magazine piece to your book that got a lot of attention in the States by David Wallace Wells, which came under criticism for conflating the worst-case scenarios with the likeliest future. How did you deal with the tension between telling a gripping story and being rigorous about facts?

a.The beauty of using 6 degrees of warming as a framing is you can have it both ways. Its a grippingly terrifying story because youve got a strong narrative going from the relatively moderate 1-degree world up to the utterly terrifying 6-degree world, and you can read it almost like a novel as those worlds unfold. Im not saying that we will ever see 6 degrees; thats a product of decisions we have yet to make. I just think its useful to get outside these polarized debates about what the future will bring, because thats not actually the question. The question is: What will happen if we do X? I dont have to address the question of how likely it is, thats a collective decision humanity will make over the next few decades.

Q. One of the scariest things you mention is the positive feedbacks, where, for instance, a world with 4 degrees of warming melts the Arctic permafrost, which could release enough methane to bump us up to 5 degrees.

a.Yeah, and thats probably what David Wallace Wells would point to. Even if we are not going to quadruple our coal consumption, we still face the possibility of crossing these tipping points which make the global heating process unstoppable. Perhaps Im more nuanced on that than I was in the first book: Some people thought that it was saying that if we crossed 2 degrees it would trigger a tipping point which would get you to 3, and then a tipping point which takes you to 4 like a line of dominoes. Its not quite like that because we are not sure where the tipping points are, and because it takes time for them to play out. That Arctic permafrost is meters thick, it takes decades to melt, rot, and hit the atmosphere, and then decades more for that to turn into warming and then melt more permafrost.

On a lot of these tipping points, we are talking about centuries. For instance, I think we have already crossed the tipping point where the melting of Greenland has become irreversible, but it will still take centuries to unfold.

a.Im a pretty strong climate hawk I would say. If we want to save even a semblance of the worlds coral reefs, we have to stay on a 1.5 degree pathway, even 2 degrees leads to the bleaching of something like 99 percent of coral reefs. The saddest things for me are the annihilation of our biological inheritance rainforests, coral reefs, the Arctic. You can argue that humans can survive perfectly happily for the first couple of degrees. But for me, its nonetheless profoundly important, and something Im quite happy to spend my entire life advocating on.

Q What about the scenarios that might not lead to the collapse of civilization but that would create mass suffering among people without access to air conditioning in, say, South Asia?

a.The date at which we make parts of the world uninhabitable because of extreme heat keeps coming forward. The first research on this put that date within a 5-degree scenario. Its now between 3 and 4 degrees. Weve already been close to conditions that make it lethal to stay outside in some parts of the Persian Gulf just about touched it for a few hours. It wasnt supposed to happen for another 2 or 3 degrees. That suggests its going to come more quickly. In terms of human consequences, the two issues that stand out are extreme heat and food production. Im not confident that we can adapt the worlds breadbaskets to survive even 2 degrees warming.

Q. How does this grim knowledge make you feel day to day? Does it make you depressed, energized, or what?

a.Ive been through all that stuff. Ive had my periods of depression and profound sense of loss. To be honest, Im so used to it, I dont find it difficult to cope. Im quite good at compartmentalizing. And these arent immediate things its not the same as a war or pandemic, so you can actually forget about it for a bit.

Q. Do you see a parallel with the COVID pandemic?

a.The pandemic is like climate change on warp speed. The cause and effect are much more closely linked.

The lockdown is also a bit like the need to change our lifestyles to reduce carbon. So we stopped the flying, we change our diets, we make the sacrifices needed to bend the [carbon] curve. And then in the longer term, youve got the prospect of a vaccine. The climate parallel is technology substitution: You can replace dirty power with clean power, you can find ways to do zero-carbon travel. Those all take time, so in the short term, yes, we need to stop flying, but you cant maintain lockdown forever, either for this virus, or for climate change.

Q. It sounds like you see both a need to live more simply, and embrace technology?

a.Well, the living simply thing isnt going to work in the long run. The part of the world that is living simply, namely sub-Saharan Africa and other places way below the poverty line, dont want to stay in that condition. Its not a viable argument in a practical or even moral sense. Yes, its a lifestyle choice for certain people, but to pretend even for an instant that its a climate solution is insane.

Q. Wait, but you just mentioned flying less, dont you think the richer world must make sacrifices?

a.I do, but only in the short term. Remember you can only sustain things by moral exhortation for a short period of time, and then people tire of it and move on. Like with the lockdowns, its a matter of months really. I think the same thing will apply to climate. Look, there are technologies available that would allow us to decarbonize and continue to grow prosperity, especially in the developing world.

Q. But in this book you are just laying out the consequences. You dont propose solutions.

a.I just thought, fuck that, I wrote that book five years earlier, called Nuclear 2.0 Its got a whole strategy mapped out for a transition to renewable energy and nuclear, etcetera, etcetera. Plus, Id never be able to sell the book in Germany if I mentioned the N word. I would rather have a book that could be read by a wider group of people and allow them to then investigate solutions in whatever way they want.

Smart home ecosystems must be connected to aid energy transition – Smart Energy

Residential buildings have a major impact on energy use globally and are second only to industry energy use. Despite this fact, the home ecosystem is siloed between smart home and extended home ecosystems with very little overlap, finds Lux Research.

In the report Delivering Smart Home Energy Management, Lux Research outlines what can be done to connect the two and deliver a better solution to aid in the transition to clean energy.

Today, there are no smart home/energy management offerings that deliver on all home ecosystem capabilities, explains Jessica Hernandez, Analyst at Lux and lead author of the report.

The home ecosystem is currently broken down into two siloed parts: the smart home ecosystem, which covers aspects of security, convenience, and comfort, and the extended home ecosystem, which covers on-site energy generation, energy storage, and electric vehicle charging. The only area of overlap between these two ecosystems is in home energy management (HEM), which will be key to uniting the home ecosystem, Hernandez continues.

More than $5 billion has been invested in the HEM space since the beginning of the new century, with $3.2 billion in venture investments in the past five years alone. These investments show a strong innovation interest, as attention is coming from incumbents in the space such as electric utility companies and appliance manufacturers but also smart home solution developers, energy service providers, energy storage solution developers, and automotive OEMs.

Up to this point, service providers and appliance manufacturers have focused on unique smart home use cases, leaving room for an integrator that takes the middle ground approach to unifying it all, Hernandez states.

Energy management is the only area that the smart home and the extended home have in common, and so far, this connection has remained relatively ignored by companies focusing on either branch of the home ecosystem.

In order to move forward, energy providers and smart home developers need to develop partnerships that enable unification across the entire home ecosystem. Service providers should partner with players offering a high amount of flexibility in enabled capabilities.

Lux Research encourages emerging players in the extended home space to focus on developing smart home solutions that deliver both energy management and comfort to appeal to the needs of consumers.

Xiaomi’s new 2020 ecosystem products has something for those cooped up indoors, and those craving to venture out – Digital News Asia

2020 has started strongly for Xiaomi. The Beijing-headquartered tech company recorded solid growth across all its business segments in Q1 2020 its total revenue in the quarter amounted to RMB49.7 billion (US$7 billion), representing a 13.6% YoY increase.

In June 2020, management consultants the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) ranked the company at 24th place among the 50 most innovative 2020 companies in the world.

While it remains to be seen if Xiaomi held out well during the quarters preceding the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is not resting on its laurels when it comes to announcing new products.

Xiaomi just announced new inclusions to its IoT-connected smart hardware range, and has something for both those who are forced to stay indoors and those gearing up to venture outdoors. New fitness trackers and additions to their electric scooters (pic, above)! And, more interestingly, an evolution to their Android TV boxes.

For the indoors

The Mi TV Stick (pic, left) is what happens when you take an Android TV box (such as Xiaomis own Mi Box range) and squeeze it down into a Chromecast-sized device. Like the Mi Box, the Mi TV Stick is powered by Android TVTM, offering access to thousands of content titles as well as apps and games via Google Play, but its now merely something you stick into the HDMI slot of your TV.

It provides 1080p resolution content and Dolby and DTS support. Users gain instant access to Google Assitant, Netflix and Prime audio using the dedicated buttons on the remote control. It can also double as a device to cast content from the smartphone and tablet, as it has built-in Chromecast functionality.

The Mi TV Stick is priced at 39.99 (US$45.6) globally. Theres no Malaysian price just yet, but Xiaomi has assured us that local sales info and pricing will be announced once the product is available.

Xiaomi didnt announce a new TV to go with the Stick, but it did announce something for gamers. The Mi Curved Gaming Monitor 34-inch boasts a WQHD 3,440 x 1,440 resolution display at 21:9 ultra-wide aspect ratio and 144hz refresh rate.

The screen has a 1500R curvature, meant to perfectly contour to the human field of view. It also sports 121% sRGB wide colour gamut. The global recommended retail price of Mi Curved Gaming Monitor 34-inch is 399 (US$455).

Xiaomi also launched the Mi True Wireless Earphones 2 Basic (pic), which offers 5 hours of uninterrupted play from full charge, as well as a total battery life of 20 hours from the three additional charges from its case.

This wireless earphones set uses dual-mic environmental noise cancellation tech to filter background noise and provide clear sound. Removing one ear piece will pause audio, thanks to its in-ear detection feature. Double tapping on the earphone will allow users to pause or play music, pick up calls and access voice control.

The Mi True Wireless Earphones 2 Basic supports both SBC and AAC codecs. Global price lists it at 39.99.

For the outdoors

For those who cant wait to get their outdoor steps counted, Xiaomi has also unveiled the Mi Smart Band 5 (pic, below), the latest in their line of fitness trackers. The device has been revamped with a 1.1-inch high-resolution AMOLED display the extra viewing space allows the Band 5 to not only display more real-time stats, but also allow users to personalise the band display with more than 65 theme options and customisable function modules.

It also has an optimised PPG sensor. Xiaomi claims that it features more accurate heart rate tracking for 11 exercise types, including rowing, yoga, elliptical, jump rope and more (so its also good indoors!). Theres also a host of new features, including stress level detection, breathing exercises, female health tracking and PAI health matrix.

The Mi Smart Band 5 has also made charging simpler a new magnetic charger snaps easily to the back of the band, which means you can now charge the device without removing the strap. According to Xiaomi, one full charge will support the device up to 14 days.

The global price for the Mi Smart Band 5 is 39.99.

If you dont want to clock more steps outdoors, though, Xiaomi has also introduced the Mi Electric Scooter Pro 2. The new e-scooter can reach speeds of up to 25km/h and cover up to 45km on a single charge.

The 300W brushless DC motor is claimed to make 20% incline slopes an effortless climb for the scooter. Theres also a built-in LCD monitor for users to keep an eye on their real-time speed, riding modes and battery levels.

The new scooter is equipped with 8.5-inch pneumatic tires, which apparently helps absorbs shocks from bumps in the road. As far as safety measures go, it has a dual braking system alongside front, rear and side reflectors, plus a 2W headlight for when youre out riding at night.

The Mi Electric Scooter Pro 2 is crafted from lightweight materials and is weighed at 14.2kg. It can apparently be folded up in less than three seconds, which sounds like a great companion for transit.

The Pro 2 scooter is priced at 499. Theres a cheaper alternative in the Mi Electric Scooter 1S, which has a similar max speed of 25km/h but can only travel up to 30km on a single charge. This version features a 250W brushless motor that helps riders climb 14% inclines more easily.

It also has a double braking system and reinforced pneumatic tyres. Its lighter as well, at 12.5kg, and can be folded. The Mi Electric Scooter 1S prices at 399.

The development of the coronavirus pandemic, its aggressiveness, is also the bitter fruit of the devastation of nature, the loss of species biodiversity, the destruction of the habitat of wild species, deforestation, pollution of the environment, seas and air and climate change caused by capitalism and imperialism.

Italy in 2020, which has faced the pandemic virus, is an Italy weakened by decades of cuts, privatizations, reduction of hospitals and beds, dismemberment of locally based medicine, weakening of intermediate and home care and of the network of general practitioners and paediatricians .

An Italy that has constantly cut healthcare personnel, blocked the recruitment of doctors, nurses and healthcare technicians.

An Italy that, under centre-right and centre-left governments, as well as the "technocractic" governments, had already taken 37 billion euros from the health service in 10 years, but whose cuts have now lasted almost thirty years. It has resulted in corporate organisation, privatization and the progressive breaking up of all solidarity between the different parts of the national territory.

All this has inevitably contributed, in the phase of the pandemic explosion, to the deaths of thousands of people and two hundred health workers.It is necessary to radically change direction, to say enough with this state of affairs.

For these reasons, seeking the widest possible unity of action with all the political, trade union and social forces, we collecting signatures in support of a popular petition for:

* a single public and secular National Health Service, managed by the State, resolving the current system of regional autonomies;

* setting up a public centre for research, production and distribution of medicines and medical devices;

* abolition of all prescription charges, all forms of payment by users;

* a big increase in the financing of the national health service, to be achieved also through the cutting of military spending, the reintroduction of highly progressive taxation on incomes and an asset tax on wealth;

* the redefinition of the structures of prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, hospital and territorial services, also through the reopening, where necessary, of closed hospitals and ending outsourcing

* reproductive rights and proper financing of Family Advice Centres, free abortion and contraception for all women;

* reducing waiting lists to the absolute minimum, reviewing existing organizational and management models, ending specific payments for external doctors, , investing in means and personnel; obligation to manage demand for all health activities, without leaving people in the tentacles of the free market;

* ending the limits on the numbers allowed to accessuniversity training for doctors and health professionals;

* an emergency plan to give secure contracts to all personnel with temporary contracts and to hire all medical personnel, professions, and health care workers, with permanent contracts, which will facilitate the training of stable teams, with improved care;

* a policy to adequately recognise the work of health care personnel;

* the maintenance of the single text on safety in the workplace (81/2008), against any hypothesis of criminal immunity for employers.

The Co-op, anti-slavery and the Lancashire cotton famine – Morning Star Online

IN 2017 the Co-op Group was presented with the Thomson-Reuters Stop Slavery award.

This was made for its impressive work against modern-day slavery, winning praise for its Bright Futures programme which offers paid employment for slavery and trafficking victims.

Im not sure if the founders of what had been the Co-operative Wholesale Society (CWS) would have felt about this pride no doubt that their values where still being upheld but shock that something they had fought against was still going on.

The CWS was formed in Manchester in 1863 almost in the middle of the American civil war.

The trade mark of the society, the Wheatsheaf, includes the motto Labor and Wait.

Note that Labor is the American spelling. It comes from the last line of the poem by US poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, A Psalm of Life.

Let us, then, be up and doing,With a heart for any fate;Sill achieving, still pursuing,Learn to Labor and to wait.

The use of this motto was a clear statement of the founders of the CWS of its support for the abolitionist cause during the civil war.

The war had a huge effect on Manchester and the cotton districts in Lancashire and Yorkshire.

In 1861 when the war began there where approximately half a million workers employed in the cotton industry of northern England.

The huge wealth of Liverpool and Cottonopolis, as Manchester was known following Richard Arkwrights development of the steam-driven textile mill, was based on mass production.

By 1853 there where over 100 cotton mills in Greater Manchester, making it the worlds centre of cotton spinning.

In parallel with this technological development Manchester was also a centre of radical politics.

In 1845, Friedrich Engels wrote: Manchester is the seat of the most powerful unions, the central point of Chartism, the place which numbers the most socialists.

There is a strong historical continuity between Chartism the development of trade unions and the roots of co-operation in the strike committees formed in the 1840s to help members of artisan traders during industrial disputes.

When the American civil war began, initially sentiment among radicals was mixed.

Given slavery was present across the United States, there was a split between those who supported the right of the Southern states to secede from the Union and the more radical supporters of full suffrage.

Interestingly, the great free-trade liberal newspaper the Manchester Guardian took this former position, undoubtedly under pressure form the considerable cotton interests in the City.

Prior to the civil war there had been an anti-slavery committee in Manchester that had raised money for the underground railway through which slaves could escape to free states.

Many radicals in the cotton districts saw only too clearly the links between their own conditions and the conditions of those in slavery in the United States.

Writing in the New York Daily Tribune on October 14 1861, Karl Marx wrote: As long as the English cotton manufacturers depend on slave-grown cotton, it could truthfully be asserted that they rested on two-fold slavery, the indirect slavery of the white man in England and the direct slavery of the black man on the other side of the Atlantic.

Involved in this anti-slavery society was Edward Owen Greening (1836-1923), a Quaker who went on to become an important co-operator involved in the very first Co-operative Congress in 1869.

There were at the time of the civil war 118 co-operative societies in the cotton districts. They had been gradually coming together to form a collective buying and wholesale operation.

These discussions included two other key figures Edward Hoosen, who came from Halifax, had little formal education but gained his outlook from the Chartist newspaper Northern Star and was Manchesters leading Chartist, and John Charles Edwards, president of the Manchester and Salford Equitable Society.

Both were to become original members of the Board of the CWS.

In April 1861 Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a blockade of the Southern ports, cutting off the supply of cotton.

This had a devastating effect on the cotton districts. By November 1862, 330,759 cotton workers had been laid off and were seeking relief.

We have an excellent record of what happened in the cotton districts because of the work of John Watts who was the secretary of the central relief committee during the famine and who complied a magisterial report of the famine published in 1866.

The loss of work and resulting famine had a devastating effect on many co-operative societies with many smaller ones going to the wall.

They also suffered from the way the local Poor Law boards dealt with relief, forcing those seeking relief to give up their shareholdings in co-operative societies before they could get relief and even issuing relief tickets that could not be used in co-op stores.

In many ways these slights hardened the positions of both workers and co-operators, enhancing their support for the Union and accelerating progress towards the formation of the CWS to enhance the commercial strength of co-op societies.

This came to a head on New Years Eve 1862. The following day Lincoln had said that all persons held as slaves within the rebellious states, are, and henceforward shall be free.

An advertisement appeared in the Manchester Guardian:

TONIGHT FREE-TRADE HALLWORKINGMENS MEETING for Union and Freedom, andto prepare an Address to President Lincoln.Chair to be taken at seven oclock. members of the committee to be at the Hall at half past five.Doors open at six.J.C. Edwards Hon. Secretary

This meeting had been called by Hoosen and Edwards, who had raised the 30 to pay for the hall. Their call did not go unheeded.

That night the Free Trade Hall was full to overflowing. Despite the hardship the blockade was causing, over 6,000 people packed inside. The Union and Emancipation Society was formed.

The first resolution of the meeting was moved by Edwards: That this meeting, recognising the common brotherhood of mankind and the sacred and inalienable right of every human being to personal freedom and equal protection, records its detestation at negro slavery in America, and of the attempts of the rebellious Southern slaveholders to organise on the great American continent a nation having slavery as its base.

Despite the Manchester Guardians detestation of Lincoln, it duly reported the proceedings of the evening in the next days newspaper.

The outcome of the gathering was a letter of solidarity from the working people of Manchester to Lincoln: The erasure of that foul blot on civilisation and Christianity chattel slavery during your presidency, will cause the name of Abraham Lincoln to be honoured and revered by posterity.

Astonishingly on January 19 1863, Lincoln replied by sending an address to the working people of Manchester.

He recognised their suffering as an instance of sublime Christian heroism, and added: It is indeed an energetic and re-inspiring assurance of the inherent truth and the ultimate and universal triumph of justice humanity and freedom.

This was followed in February by the first food relief ship from New York to Liverpool, the ship the George Griswold carried boxes of bacon and bread, bags of rice and corn and 15,000 barrels of flour and was greeted on the docks by a crowd of 4,000. This was the first of several relief ships.

Before the war ended the CWS had been formed and Edwards went on to be its first secretary and cashier.

Sadly, although Hoosen became one of the founder members of the board of the CWS, he only lived to 1869 and was buried near Ernest Jones in Ardwick Cemetery.

The Co-operative movement survived the American civil war.

The Rochdale Society alone donated 1,500 towards unemployment relief, establishing soup kitchens and organising education workshops and activities.

Watts, secretary of the relief committee, went into write for the Co-operative News.

In his famous History of the Rochdale Pioneers, George Jacob Holyoake wrote that co-operative societies had no small share in enabling the people of the two great cotton-spinning counties to resist the recognition of a slave dominion.

Today in the appropriately named Lincoln Square between Brazenose Street, Albert Square and Deansgate in Manchester is a statue of Abraham Lincoln.

The inscription on the plinth says it is dedicated to the support the working people of Manchester gave in the fight for the abolition of slavery in the American Civil War.

Thats one statue that should not be pulled down.

Blockchain could lead the way to a smarter grid.

While some industries have been quick to adopt blockchain technology, the energy generation sector has been relatively slow to embrace the opportunity. Following several successful European projects however, a revolution in energy generation is happening.

Change in the energy sector often requires considered and cautious decisions. This isnt necessarily a negative trait, as it ensures all new technologies are understood with a clear plan on how to integrate them into existing processes. Yet, as we look ahead to the potential future of blockchain in the energy industry, the sector has already taken great strides in accepting this decentralised exchange.

Blockchain is useful in situations where two parties exchange something, whereby frequent trades are governed by a contract. Whether this is the exchange of goods, money or in this case, energy, the same principles apply. Manually writing and signing contracts for each transaction would be very time consuming, so the contracts must be digitalised in a traceable and secure way, without a single point of ownership one main benefit of using blockchain technology.

In the energy industry, this can be particularly beneficial for microgeneration. For instance, an owner of a small solar farm may be selling excess energy to their neighbours. Inevitably, these neighbours want a fast and straightforward system to access this energy. Otherwise, they would simply stick with energy from their main utility provider.

Using blockchain, the neighbours can set a price point they are willing to buy the energy for, without the need to embark on complex negotiations or create manual contracts. If the solar farm owner cannot meet this price point, the neighbour can simply take power from their utility provider. This might change the whole energy supply system to a demand-driven concept. In order to give the solar farm owner an overview of the current situation, or reports about how he profited from the negotiations, it will require a SCADA system or at least an HMI. Today, these systems do not speak blockchain, but as soon as the demand rises, they will adapt rapidly.

This flexibility is particularly advantageous in renewable applications in which energy is volatile, like solar farms. Blockchain technology is dynamic and therefore handles such variability. Most importantly from a financial perspective, this blockchain trade is completely isolated from the utility, therefore avoiding transaction fees from a central trader.

There are several European projects setting good examples of using blockchain effectively. Many of these projects focus on the prosumer, a person who consumes and produces a product like the earlier solar farm owner.

Take Elblox as an example. This project, originating in Switzerland, is a peer-to-peer platform that allows producers and prosumers to exchange renewable energy with their local public. Using the platform, those with energy to spare can position themselves in the local energy market, allowing consumers to buy this electricity in just a few clicks.

Using the likes of Elblox, blockchain is revolutionising how energy is generated, stored, bought, sold and used at the local level. As traders do not pay transaction fees to a central trader and the prosumers can act faster to new price situations, profits in the microgrid can be optimised using this method.By creating localised energy marketplaces across the existing grid infrastructure, the conventional energy model may be a thing of the past.

It is hard to predict exactly how blockchain will affect the current energy model of large-scale providers and utility companies.

However, there are suggestions that the technology will prove just as valuable to the utility as it is to prosumers. Energy generation setpoints are currently decided by the grid governor. In the future, governors may also gather information from microgrid blockchain requests and consider this data when defining setpoints.

Theres also uncertainty around the cyber security implications of blockchain. Yet, blockchain has been developed to be secure and uses sophisticated maths, which makes it extremely difficult for attackers to manipulate it. There is no one weak point to attack, which is a huge benefit of decentralisation.

With the technology safe from manipulation, an arguably bigger threat is at the users site. Authentication mechanisms, rather like the ones used for internet banking, may be required for the initial setup of a peer account.

Blockchain is bringing big changes, so it is no surprise the energy industry is lagging behind others in adoption. However, we are already witnessing successful examples of blockchain. Looking to the future, Europe will be on its way to optimising microgrid profits through decentralised, peer-to-peer trading.

Is Pope John Paul II worthy of title ‘the great’? – Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

As he began his 1979 pilgrimage through Poland, Pope John Paul II preached a soaring sermon that was fiercely Catholic, yet full of affection for his homeland.

For Communist leaders, the fact that the former Archbishop of Krakow linked faith to national pride was pure heresy. The pope joyfully claimed divine authority to challenge atheism and the government's efforts to reshape Polish culture.

"Man cannot be fully understood without Christ," John Paul II told 290,000 people at a Mass in Warsaw's Victory Square. "He cannot understand who he is, nor what his true dignity is, nor what his vocation is, nor what his final end is. ... Christ cannot be kept out of the history of man in any part of the globe, at any longitude or latitude of geography."

That was bad enough. Then he added: "It is therefore impossible without Christ to understand the history of the Polish nation. ... If we reject this key to understanding our nation, we lay ourselves open to a substantial misunderstanding. We no longer understand ourselves."

This was the stuff of sainthood, and John Paul II received that title soon after his 26-year pontificate ended. But the global impact of that 1979 sermon is a perfect example of why many Catholics believe it's time to attach another title to his name -- "the great."

"The informal title 'the great' is not one that is formally granted by the church," explained historian Matthew Bunson, author of "The Pope Encyclopedia: An A to Z of the Holy See."

"Every saint who is also a pope is not hailed as 'the great,' but the popes who have been called 'the great' are all saints. ... When you hear that title, you are dealing with both the love of the faithful for this saint and the judgment of history."

In the case of John Paul II, mourners chanted "Santo subito!" ("Saint now!") and waved posters with that slogan at his funeral. During a Mass only 13 hours after his death, Cardinal Angelo Sodano spoke of "John Paul, indeed, John Paul the Great."

When he was chosen to succeed John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI's first words to the crowd in St. Peter's Square were, "After the great pope ..."

Discussions of attaching "the great" to this saint's title were jumpstarted by a recent letter from Benedict XVI that marked the centenary of the birth, in the Polish town of Wadowice, of the man who would become John Paul II.

"The word 'saint' indicates God's sphere, and the word 'great,' the human dimension," Benedict wrote. The term "great" is harder to define, he added, and in the "course of the almost 2,000-year-long history of the papacy, the title 'the great' has been maintained only for two popes: Leo I (440-461) and Gregory I (590-604). In the case of both, the word 'great' has a political connotation, but precisely because something of the mystery of God himself becomes visible through their political success."

In both of those cases, Bunson said, the future of Rome and the Roman world were at risk -- with Leo dealing with Attila the Hun, while Gregory faced the invading forces of the Lombards. Pope Gregory the Great also produced epic works of theology, especially on the liturgy and the work of bishops.

"With that in mind, just look at the dramatic life of John Paul II," Bunson said. "You start with his underground work against the Nazis, then all the ways that he stood up to Communism during the Cold War. Finally, there are his encyclicals opposing the existential threat of postmodernism -- what he called the 'culture of death' -- to the value of the human person."

In his letter, Benedict XVI quoted the famous words of Russia's Joseph Stalin, who asked, considering Europe's future: "How many divisions does the pope have?"

As it turned out, Pope John Paul II was more than a worthy opponent.

"Let us leave open the question of whether the epithet 'the great' will prevail or not," noted the retired pope. "It is true that God's power and goodness have become visible to all of us in John Paul II. In a time when the Church is again suffering from the oppression of evil, he is for us a sign of hope and confidence."

We are being lied to about everything. That was the entire anguished text of a tweet that struck me the other day. It was from a young woman whose top interests, to judge from her Twitter feed, include the science experts response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It came on the heels of a remarkable public statement from another young woman, Bari Weiss, resigning her job as a journalist at the New York Times. She explained that she was sickened by the ruling orthodoxy at the newspaper, a predetermined narrative, bullying, online venom, smears, lies, and vicious false labels directed at the ideologically non-compliant.

Yes, she sounded like she was describing the world of academic Darwinism!

Americans are waking up and recognizing a dangerous lack of integrity in science and in the media. At a time of crisis, heres what you can do make a positive difference.

Imagine there was a pandemic and a great number of people found themselves greeting statements from scientists, conveyed by the media, with increasing jaded skepticism. In fact, the media at this moment worry about Americans not trusting the experts about COVID, whether regarding mandatory masks or about the fantasy land of a forthcoming return to normalcy, as a reporter for The Hill sneered.

Now imagine that, perhaps, what those scientists say really should be believed. Finally theyre telling the truth but half the country wont believe them. The cost in lives could be staggering.

People distrust the experts because large swaths of science and the media have traded truth for advancing an ideological agenda. Were numb to what they tell us.

Thegoblin shark, duck-billed platypus, lungfish, tadpole shrimp, cockroach, coelacanths and the horseshoe crab these creatures are famous in the world of biology, because they look as though they stopped evolving long ago. To use a term introduced by Charles Darwin in 1859, they are living fossils. And to their ranks, some have added humans, based on the idea that technology and modern medicine has, for all intents and purposes, eliminated natural selection by allowing most infants to live to reproductive age and pass on their genes.

It may be tempting to conclude from the sharks, horseshoe crabs and other creatures that evolution does often stop, and that Darwins living fossil term makes sense. But such a conclusion would be wrong.

Some argue that Darwin never intended the phrase to be used seriously. The term is over-simplifying and leads to people believing that some things havent evolved, which is so wrong, noted Africa Gmez, a biologist at Hull University in the United Kingdom who led a genetic analysis of the tadpole shrimp that in 2013 demonstrated that this living fossil is no fossil at all. They have been evolving non-stop and speciating and radiating, so why on earth are they called living fossils?

The same is true if one looks closely at the other living fossils. They are all evolving, humans included. This is partially because there is more to biology than meets the eye, with things changing constantly at the cellular and biochemical level. But its also because Darwins watershed discovery, natural selection, known in popular language as survival of the fittest is not the only evolutionary force.

Death prior to reaching reproductive age and lack of reproductive capability are not the only factors controlling biological change. Mathematics also plays a role here. Keep the environmental conditions the same around a biological group, remove selective pressures, but mess with the numbers of individuals in a population, and evolution still happens. Living things evolve, whether you see it on the surface or not.

Natural selection is the best-known evolutionary force and there are numerous examples of it operating quickly in recent times. To illustrate how natural selection works to biology students, teachers and textbook writers typically use examples of creatures with physically obvious changes. Among the more popular is the peppered moth of England. Early in the Industrial Revolution, peppered moths were light-colored. This camouflaged them against the white bark of birch trees around industrializing cities. Over a half-century, as the soot from burning coal in factories darkened the bark of the trees, the moths darkened their coloring too. It happened through natural selection. If youre black moth on a white tree, youre likely to get eaten by a bird, but when the trees darkened, now the dark moths had the advantage.

Another textbook example of natural selection is the high incidence of sickle cell disease in humans in places where malaria is endemic. Malaria and sickle cell disease are both deadly without modern medicine, but to have sickle cell disease one must carry two copies of a gene for defective hemoglobin, one from each parent. Having one defective copy, and one normal copy of the relevant gene however protects an individual from the parasite that causes malaria. But it causes no sickle cell crises, unless the individual engages in extreme exercise, or travels to high altitudes.

The lesson from these examples is that natural selection, due to environmental factors, leads to overt changes, but that a biological status quo should persist as long as everything in the environment remains copacetic.

In the mid to late 19th century, Darwin enjoyed a fair amount of publicity in England, and throughout the world. That publicity was well deserved, but Darwins contemporary, Gregor Mendel, was effectively invisible. Working from a monastery in a region that is now part of the Czech Republic, Mendel made fundamental discoveries about inheritance that eventually would put him in chapter one of every genetics text book. Darwin thought that children were a blend of their parents. But using plant models, Mendel figured out that this was not the case. Rather, he found that traits often disappeared from parents to offspring, only to reappear in future generations.

Early in the 20th century, a British researcher named Reginald Punnett was asking a lot of questions about inheritance to himself and also to his colleagues. Together with biologist William Bateson, Punnett would end up co-founding the Journal of Genetics in 1910. But Punnett also had a mathematician friend named Godfrey Hardy. Together, Punnett and Hardy used to play a lot of cricket, and one day on the cricket field Punnett mentioned that the problem of inheritance might be understood best in light of mathematics.

This led Hardy to publish what was called Hardys Law in June of 1908. It was an algebraic expression showing how the numbers and ratios of genes and traits should stay the same, or shift over time. It would have made Hardy the sole founder of population biology, if not for the fact that somebody else had already discovered it six months earlier. That man was Wilhelm Weinberg, a German physician who had derived a similar equation of population genetics in January, 1908. When this was realized, geneticists began referring to what we now call the Hardy-Weinberg Principle, and an equation by the same name.

The Hardy Weinberg Principle illustrates that there is an equilibrium that is maintained the ratios alleles, alternate forms of each gene remain the same, so there is no evolution if selective pressure is removed, but there are a couple of other requirements. The population must be reproductively isolated (separated from other organisms that can produce offspring with it), and the population must be infinitely large.

If the number of individuals in an isolated, successful population is not infinity, then a force called genetic drift comes into play. Like the increasing chances of getting more heads or more tails as the number of random coin tosses is decreased, genetic drift increases as the size of a population decreases. Other things that happen in nature are founder effects and bottlenecks, both of which you can equate to drawing a handful of gumballs from a jar and ending up holding gumballs with a ratio of colors that differs from the color ratio in the jar, due to the randomness of sampling.

With a founder effect, a small group of individuals gets isolated, and due to chance the ratio of alleles for various genes is different from the mother population. The same is true in a bottleneck effect, which happens when the bulk of a population gets killed off, and due to to chance, the ratio of different alleles in the surviving gene pool is different from what it was in the mother population.

Whereas founder effects and bottlenecks remove diversity from the gene pool of a population, the opposite can happen when migration and other factors bring populations together. Thus, while in the case of humanity, modern medicine and other technologies may indeed be reducing the impact of natural selection, migration and founder effects has been playing a major roles as transportation and other technologies have developed. And these phenomena may play a still more influential role if human colonization of the Moon, Mars, or free space becomes reality. In nature all phenomena that change the gene pool operate in concert, affecting the course of evolution, whether in tadpole shrimp, lungfish, or humans.
