The Bodice Project: Artists salute spirit of breast cancer patients – The Winchester Star

WINCHESTER A new exhibit at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley salutes the strength of breast cancer patients.

The Bodice Project features nearly two dozen plaster torsos creatively transformed by artists from West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. In addition to several painted plaster casts, other sculptures are made of wood, yarn, clay and metal.

Each sculpture is accompanied by a statement from the artist about the person who inspired them.

The Bodice Project all began due to the friendship between Cynthia Fraula-Hahn and Lou Ann Thompson, who have been friends since their girlhood in Frederick County.

Fraula-Hahn, an artist, started the Bodice Project in 2014 after she found out Thompson needed treatment for breast cancer. She created and painted a torso as a way to honor her friend as well as to channel her anxiety for her. Ascension is painted with an allegory of birds and feathers to represent the healing process.

Im a painter. I didnt know what I was doing, said Fraula-Hahn, who now lives in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. But I kind of never do anything in a small way.

Other artists found out about Fraula-Hahns new passion project and wanted to participate.

The sculptures have been displayed in art galleries, at special events including the 2018 National Conference of the American Association for Cancer Research in Chicago and at universities.

After the exhibit closes in November at the MSV, The Bodice Project will go to The Huntington Museum of Art in West Virginia and the Visions Art Museum in San Diego, California.

This show could go anywhere, and Im totally proud of it, said Fraula-Hahn, who made several of the pieces in the show.

Every breast cancer patient has a different story to tell, Fraula-Hahn said.

Artist Christian Benefiel created Network out of wooden lattice to honor his mother, a breast cancer survivor. Fraula-Hahns Big Heart plaster sculpture of a male torso with a mastectomy depicts a physicians assistant who cares for hospice patients and has helped other male breast cancer survivors. Hidden Prayer by Anne Rule-Thompson is an earthenware clay shell that contains an illuminated prayer in honor of a dear friend who is a yoga instructor.

If Fraula-Hahn created that first torso for Thompson as a way to cope with her worries, her latest is simply an expression of her love.

When Fraula-Hahns husband died in 2008, Thompson delivered a moving eulogy incorporating the imagery of a golden thread connecting friends and family.

The torso Fraula-Hahn created just this year and called The Golden Thread is adorned with apple blossoms connected with a golden thread to represent Thompson, who was a volunteer for the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival for more than 35 years. She served as president of the festival in 2014, the very year she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent treatment.

Im really proud of it, so proud of it. Lou Ann was the catalyst and the inspiration, said Fraula-Hahn, giving her friend a hug. And now Im going to need to get a tissue.

For you to remember that golden thread, caught me off guard, said Thompson, who had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis before she found out she had breast cancer.

The Bodice Project has drawn the attention of local health-care professionals.

Dr. Laura Dabinette, a gynecologist with the Womens Center of Winchester, had know Fraula-Hahn for years and always admired her work. When she first saw The Bodice Project she knew she wanted to help with fund-raising to make sure it could be seen by as many people as possible.

I thought how wonderful it is was to exalt a body that is not perfect, Dabinette said. I believe firmly in the power of art to heal.

Dabinette said 10 percent of her patients have cancer. Through early detection, new treatment options and DNA testing to determine high-risk individuals, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer patients has improved from 60% to 90%, she said, giving her the opportunity to offer hope to her patients.

I am passionate about all my patients, but my patients who have survived breast cancer are nearest and dearest to my heart, Dabinette said.

The MSV is located at 901 Amherst St.

The Bodice Project will be on display until Nov. 1.

Admission to The Bodice Project which includes admission to the special outdoor exhibition David Rogers Big Bugs is $15, $10 to youth (age 1318) and to seniors (60+), $5 to ages 512, free to ages 4 & under, and free to MSV members. MSV gallery admission is always free to ages 12 & under and free to all on Wednesdays; however, these free admission offers do not include Big Bugs.

Along with Dabinett, the MSV display of The Bodice Project was made possible thanks to the sponsorship of Myriad Genetics; Winchester Obstetrics and Gynecology, PLC; Drs. Anita Minghini and Paul Lambert; Shenandoah Oncology, P.C.; Valley Health System; and Tracy Fitzsimmons and J. Knox Singleton.

‘Greyhound’ director says the movie was made without any water – Insider – INSIDER

Gone are the days when movie productions would have to film on a large body of water to tell stories set out in the ocean. But it's still rare not to use any water to make that kind of movie.

Turns out that's what the Tom Hanks World War II high seas movie "Greyhound" (available now on Apple TV Plus) pulled off thanks to a mix of dazzling CGI and game developer tech.

Director Aaron Schneider ("Get Low") admits he's always been taken by the tech side of the business before directing he was a cinematographer for years. But while teaming with Hanks to direct the star's script about an inexperienced US Navy captain (Hanks) whose destroyer leads a merchant ship convoy against German U-boats during World War II, Schneider got to go full-on geek.

Though Schneider and Hanks had been talking about making "Greyhound" since late 2017, the urgency by Steven Spielberg to make "The Post" (in which Hanks plays Washington Post editor-in-chief Ben Bradlee) put things on hold.

That turned out to be a huge benefit for Schneider. He used that time to heavily research the battleships and submarines that took part in the "Battle of the Atlantic," which is what "Greyhound" is loosely based on.

Instead of reading a few books and watching a couple of World War II movies, Schneider built a website of everything he needed to know about US Navy battleships and German submarines.

"Greyhound" director Aaron Schneider. Robyn Beck/Getty

"Pictures, YouTube links, Wikipedia pages, high-resolution Navy archive photographs. I collected all these things and built a research website that was indexed and categorized in a way that as the crew came on the movie, they could take a deep dive into whatever they wanted," Schneider told Insider.

Then he went a step further. The director and a friend flew to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and took around 10,000 photographs of the retired USS Kidd, which is one of the last existing destroyers still in World War II configuration.

Those photos were then used to create a photogrammetry essentially a 3D model of the entire destroyer. Schneider used the model to figure out where he would place the camera when shooting the movie while keeping the claustrophobic feel of being on a destroyer.

Finally, it was time to shoot the movie in early 2018, but the tech didn't end.

"Every drop of water in the movie is digital," Schneider said. "Anything you see out the window or over Tom's shoulder. In fact, most of the fire is digital, too."

Typically a movie set at sea will at some point have scenes shot in a giant water tank, but that wasn't the case with "Greyhound." The chilly Atlantic Ocean, the thrilling battles between the destroyers and U-boats, and even the ice that builds up outside the ship's pilothouse was all created with CGI.

Thanks to the photogrammetry of the USS Kidd, the production knew the layout of every inch of a World War II-era destroyer. That was vital in how it built the pilothouse and balconies that we see Hank's Commander Ernest Krause character navigate through most of the movie, which was all built on a soundstage surrounded by a green screen.

Those scenes were then matched by CGI shots of the rest of the massive ship.

"Greyhound." Apple TV Plus

To really get the feel that Krause and his destroyer were at sea, Schneider used NVIDIA WaveWorks, a plug-in program usually used by game developers that provides interactive ocean simulation.

"It creates an open ocean and floats an object on the ocean based on the physical mass," Schneider said. "So if I type in the model type of a boat, it will float that object the way it would be on the ocean."

In other words, the program provided realistic blocking for the movie's boats based on real-life physics. The location of the destroyers, merchant ships, and the U-boats and battle sequences were all done through WaveWorks.

"The goal was always to use real physics into believing that this was actually photographed in a real-world kind of way," Schneider said. "If you wanted a big close shot where the ship goes by, well, if you were doing that in real life you could be on a little Zodiac, but a Zodiac floats differently on the water than a big camera ship, so you tell the program, 'float me on a Zodiac' and then all of a sudden the sea is affecting your camera ship much differently but still in a physically real way."

The result is a thrilling 90-minute movie of non-stop battles on the high sea. But as we've learned here, the real bit of movie magic was that Tom Hanks was dry and warm the whole time while filming his scenes.

"Greyhound" is currently available on Apple TV Plus.

Is the President Aware this House is Falling? – THISDAY Newspapers

BY DELE MOMODU

Fellow Nigerians, before the general elections of last year, I thought I had seen enough of the shenanigans of those in power. Things got so bad that I simply gave up. I even vowed to stay on my lane and let the heavens fall on all of us, if it must. Any independent and impartial observer would have concluded that those elections would be neither free nor fair. Any objective Nigerian watching from the inside, and participating, would also have felt the same. Both major parties were guilty of denying the Nigerian people the fair elections they desired, but the major culprit in ensuring the elections were certainly not free was the ruling Party. What we therefore ultimately witnessed was not an election. It was a shambolic, reckless and irresponsible act of crass political brigandage.

The leading political parties prepared for all-out war and it just happened that the bigger rigger won using all the power, force and might of the military, police and security agencies which were absolutely at its beck and call and ready disposal. It was no surprise, given the way the whole farce of an election had been set up, that those who control the appurtenances of power sought to completely obliterate anyone who stood in their paths.

Notwithstanding the shoddy and shameful elections, I was ready to excuse the excesses of the government in the first four years with the hope that once the second term had been achieved, we would hopefully see a government with drive and purpose. I should have known better. A leopard does not change its spots. So, by now, over one year into the second term, it is disgraceful that the leading political parties are yet to settle seriously into the onerous business of governance and indeed, opposition. The opposition has obviously capitulated without as much as a whimper, and the hapless Nigerian citizens are left practically voiceless.

In the first four years of the APC government, it was easy to place all the blame for the failure of the past on the previous ruling party, PDP. No worries. However more than a year into the second coming of the government, the current ruling party has not performed any better. Some would say that its fared even worse especially when you consider the goodwill and sheer weight of expectations that trailed the government when it first attained power.

Im sure those who know how to deceive every government in power would be telling our President that all is well. They would congratulate him on having been able to fix most of the intractable problems of the country and virtually call him the Messiah. It is almost impossible for the President of Nigeria not to be afflicted with the Messianic Complex given the hero worshipping and idolising that goes with the bootlicking that is prevalent and all-pervading amongst our political class. No matter what the praise singers cry and drum out, all is not well in the polity and in our country as I will demonstrate in a jiffy, before offering my suggestions, as always. If after over five years, our country is still tottering, wobbling and virtually on the brink of collapse, the President in particular, and our political gladiators in general, must be told, without any atom of ambiguity, that Nigeria is haemorrhaging to death, at the speed of light. I will now lay out my reasons one by one.

The foundation of any government such as ours is supposed to be DEMOCRACY. Can anyone in good conscience say what we have today is close to that? The answer is a capital NO. The foundation of Democracy itself is FREEDOM. Can anyone say Nigerians enjoy freedom of thought, association and choice in Nigeria today? The answer is NO. The foundation of freedom is TOLERANCE. Has this government tolerated the plurality of the different nationalities and religions that make up Nigeria? The answer is NO. The foundation of tolerance is COMPASSION. Is this government compassionate towards the sufferings and cries of the generality of the people of Nigeria? The answer is NO. The unfolding crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic which the government is clearly incapable of handling with any degree of competence is a clear example of a government that is unserious in the extreme. The people deserve much more than the grave injustice being done to them at the altar of expediency by people who do not know how to handle a simple dilemma not to talk of a major emergency or calamity. The foundation of compassion is HUMILITY. Is our leader humble enough to appreciate the citizens and reach out to them directly, like he did, even if only to a limited extent, during political campaigns? The answer, unfortunately, again is NO. It seems the people have been used, abused, dumped and discarded. Soldiers and civilians are dying like rats and theyve become hidden statistics, because the Government is neither brave nor bold to tell the public the truth. Either as a result of the war against criminal insurgency and banditry in the North East of the country or the nationwide catastrophe caused by the Corona Virus pandemic, lives are being wasted and people are falling like flies that have been sprayed with Shelltox. Even dogs and other pets enjoy obituaries and decent burials in some countries. Not anymore in Nigeria. Shallow graves and unceremonious body disposals as well as mass burials have become the order of the day, yet we are still being kept in the dark about these sad and unfortunate incidents.

Lets now rewind and go back to the issue of Democracy. We are an extravagant lot. The variant of Democracy we chose is not what we can afford. We are operating an American Presidential system which thrives on political and corporate largesse when we have neither of these in our armoury. We are practising Capitalism without capital. We are wasting and frittering away our scarce resources on massaging human parasites called politicians instead of building our infrastructure deficit and servicing our desperate and unreasonable debts. If I didnt have the opportunity of visiting other African countries, I would have thought this is how they all squander their resources. But that is not the situation. Other African countries are more prudent even if there is some corruption in their administration. They certainly are not brazen in the manner in which they go about that sort of nefarious activity. In Nigeria, our politicians actually legitimise their looting by passing legislation to give effect to the grand larceny that they are performing under the nose of the forlorn and wretched citizenry. Our matter is now looking like a curse was cast on us by a spellbinder or sorcerer and the man has since thrown the padlock and its key into the Atlantic Ocean and there is no one to set us free.

Political systems, philosophy, and principles are sustained by ideology. Sadly, we have none because weve kept our country on the spot. We enthrone mediocres, the criminal elements or worse. Some say we are on autopilot and that is what is making us continue as a nation. I dont know about that. What I do know is that we are radarless and rudderless. We have no direction. We are like a shipwrecked vessel on the high seas bobbing and drifting about from one direction to the other, simply surviving because no strong waves have yet come to overturn it and end the misery of the ill-fated souls of passenger and crew.

So, politicians can wake up in APC and go to bed in PDP and vice versa. Lets leave PDP alone for now, they now appear to more composed and comported than APC. Who would have thought that five years ago? The ruling party has become a monumental nuisance, disgrace and unmitigated disaster to our dear beloved country. Barely one year into second term, the APC apparatchik are already positioning themselves for the 2023 general elections. They have thrown caution and decorum to the winds. Thats the basis for the spate of unashamed and unabashed political fisticuffs and brawls ongoing in most parts of the country.

APC started its reign in 2015 with a bad omen. Instead of quickly putting its house in place and getting its acts together, they spent a total of four years pursuing and fighting some parts of the union of strange bedfellows that formed APC. They became so riotously cantankerous that people wondered if they thought they were still in opposition. It was so shocking that a Party that fought so much to attain power could not manage its victory and glory even for a day. The centre had been broken from the first day when they could not even agree on their Principal officers in the National Assembly.

As if it was not bad enough in the first term of this Presidency, the infighting in the seat of power in Abuja during this second term is atrociously unbelievable and abominable. There are factions in the Presidents political and personal families, operating directly under his nose, and he appears to be helpless and hapless. What could be worse than being treated like a lame duck this early in your second term. Im aware that, on paper, the President has been sold many laudable projects that could catapult Nigeria truly to the next level, but unspeakable stealing, perfidious conduct and an irrational war of attrition wont let them ever achieve a meaningful part of them. How tragic.

The main cardinal reasons some of us fell for the Buhari Presidency were as follows. That PDP had overstayed its welcome in power and was speedily leading Nigeria towards Golgotha. Buhari was seen as the last Saint standing who would have the moral right to fight corruption to its marrow and rid us of this cankerworm. That Buhari was antisocial and would curb the excessive proclivity of our politicians for outlandish lifestyles. That Buhari as a retired military Major General would chase Boko Haram and other bandits to the pits of hell and our security challenges would be over. That Buhari would put all the monies saved from different sources to judicious use and good causes. I leave you my readers to reach your personal conclusions on where we are with the expectation and hope. Mine is that our hopes were grossly misplaced and have been unfortunately dashed. I doubt if the NPN and its offspring PDP performed this woefully. Those who wish to bury their heads in sand like the proverbial ostrich are truly welcome to do so. We are at a sorry pass and nothing seems to matter anymore.

My message to President Muhammadu Buhari is that this house built with spittle and dew is collapsing and only a miracle can sustain it any further. The current battle for the soul of the cash cow, called NDDC, is so grisly that this government may not recover from it in a while, if ever. And even worse is the unceremonious manner the former Acting EFCC Chairman was abducted in James Bond fashion in broad daylight and whisked off to the Presidential villa for a phantom investigation by jurists and personalities who should know from past experience that what goes around comes around, while other security agents were busy denying the obvious story. I have no doubt that some people in government have picked on a wrong customer this time. This Ibrahim Magu has been on their wanted list for a long time. They should have muscled enough firepower to remove him during the screening. Once they missed that chance, they automatically turned him into a scorched snake. So, he already knew who his enemies were and has had ample time and resources to plan a rematch and plot the undoing of his traducers and adversaries. Again, they botched it by not finishing what they started very promptly.

I foresee torrents of salacious and scurrilous tales flying around sooner than later. The theatre of the absurd has already commenced in earnest. Fake and false news abound. Social media is agog and awash with moonlight tales of the good, the bad and the ugly. Trust me, it will get worse and uglier! The child who says his mother wont have a good sleep must also stay awake all night. The genies and the worms are already crawling out of the Pandora boxes and cans. I see this house collapsing, like a pack of cards, like a straw hut blown away by the mere breath of the big bad wolf! Corruption is indeed fighting back, but from the inside, and against itself!

The spectators have ordered more popcorns

Scots offered bridging loan to ease Brexit and Covid effect – FarmersWeekly

The Scottish government has launched a 340m loan scheme to help farm businesses cope with Brexit uncertainty and the continuing coronavirus pandemic.

The National Basic Payment Support Scheme loans are designed to maintain cashflow, according to Scotlands rural economy secretary Fergus Ewing.

The scheme provides Scottish farmers access to 95% of their 2020 CAP support and greening payments, to a maximum of 133,638.

A similar scheme in 2018 delivered payments worth more than a quarter of a billion pounds to more than 13,500 farmers after a period of bad weather.

The Scottish government urged farmers to look out for loan offer letters in the coming weeks.

These will be sent to eligible farmers and crofters from the beginning of August, with the first payments due in September, it said.

See also: Expert advice on tendering for a farm tenancy ahead of Brexit

Successful applicants will have access to vital financial support up to three months earlier than the EU CAP payment period.

As the end of the Brexit transition period approaches, farmers will be feeling additional anxiety, so it is essential they have the cashflow they need, Mr Ewing said.

He added that the Scottish government had considered using the EU Advanced Payment system to process CAP basic payments earlier than in previous years.

[But] the Covid-19 outbreak made us reconsider whether this could deliver as much support as quickly as a loan scheme, Mr Ewing said.

We have decided to offer the loan scheme so that farmers can access this support at the earliest ever point, he said.

I would encourage anyone who would like to accept their loan offer to do so by email where they can, to allow us to process these important payments as quickly as possible.

NFU Scotland welcomed the government initiative, which would ease cashflow worries and allow farmers to invest in their businesses amid concerns over Covid-19 and Brexit.

Union president Andrew McCornick said knowing the loan scheme was coming would provide reassurance and help farmers talk to their banks about borrowings.

It also backed up the decision to stick to a 15 May deadline for BPS applications, McCornick said.

The ability for the Scottish government to make what will effectively be advanced payments is testament to claimants sticking to the 15 May application deadline, despite the unprecedented circumstances this year.

I would urge all to opt into this years scheme and to do so by email where possible to ensure payments are processed and made as soon as possible, he said.

Luke Timothy Johnson and The Spirit of Imagination | CT Pastors – ChristianityToday.com

Luke Timothy Johnson, Robert W. Woodruff Professor Emeritus of New Testament and Christian Origins at Candler School of Theology, has spent a lifetime writing on the New Testament. If you want to know more about his latest book,Constructing Paul, consider Nijay Guptas interview or Scot McKnights book review.

Here, I wish to connect Johnsons vision of Scripture to the life of the church. Under his supervision as a doctoral student, he taught me how to read Scripture both closely and imaginatively, as an artful skill and spiritual discipline. A significant refrain in Johnsons work is the centrality of religious experience for the interpretation of Scripture. At times, for Johnson, the cumulative weight of human experience contradicts scriptural commands; while for evangelicals Scripture holds the central place of authority over other common sources of theological reflection (experience, tradition, and reason). Yet Johnson has a lot to teach on reading and experiencing ...

We were shouted at for wearing masks. This is why the situation in the US is so dire – Sky News

We were shouted at for wearing masks when we turned up outside Houston City Hall.

We had just arrived to interview a very small group protesting about the Texan governor's decision to make the wearing of masks mandatory to halt the spread of coronavirus.

As others nodded in agreement, protester Oralia Acosta called us "stupid" for wearing facial coverings.

She said we were "pushing the fake news agenda", consequently perpetuating the "feeling of terror" about a disease which they believe is an exaggerated hoax - a view already espoused by Donald Trump.

"Why are you wearing a mask in this heat?" she shouted. "When you pass out, don't ask me for help cos I'm not going to help you.

"It's my right to decide whether I wear a mask or not!"

It is a view which appears to be gaining traction.

This is what public health officials in the US are up against. This is why the future predictions of COVID-19 infection are so dire.

America's Fourth of July birthday bash was a very different affair this year and nowhere more so than in Texas.

Most of the fireworks shows were cancelled and turned into virtual displays. Parades were called off and street parties abandoned.

But despite still recording daily highs in infections, some Texans refused to be cowed by the deadliest virus sweeping the planet today.

We watched as hundreds in Giddings, in Lee County, crowded into an arena to take part in the local holiday weekend bull-riding competition.

Few were wearing masks, despite an order from the governor making it compulsory. Even fewer expressed concern about the virus that has killed tens of thousands of their countrymen and women.

"I'm not worried. What'll happen will happen," said one young woman. "If I'm meant to go, the good Lord will take me."

The Independence Day celebrations are traditionally a time for unity, but the collision of coronavirus and the ensuing unemployment, and the scourge of racism raised by the killing of George Floyd, has put paid to that.

The imploring by public health officials to wear masks, keep socially distanced and preferably stay at home was basically ignored at the bull-riding show.

Dozens of cowboys vied to demonstrate their masculinity and prowess on a bucking bronco to cheers and jeers from the crowd.

The temperatures were well over 30C (86F). Being ordered to wear a mask is uncomfortable in these steamy conditions and viewed by most as, at best, unnecessary, and by some as an affront to their freedom, which this holiday weekend has been all about.

"I'm an American and I feel like I should do what I want to do," one cowboy told us. "I pay my taxes, I live free, I wanna be free."

But in an interview with Sky News, Dr Peter Hotez, who is respected internationally as an expert on infectious diseases, warned that the stubbornness of some Americans to adhere to health advice would only prolong the devastation of the disease.

"We are in one of the worst parts of the epidemic," he said. "The numbers are increasing dramatically.

"This is just the beginning they will double in the next two weeks and then double again the week after that."

He insisted that even the most dire forecast by Dr Anthony Fauci - one of the lead members of Mr Trump's coronavirus task force, who has warned the number of daily infections nationwide could reach 100,000 - could be dwarfed in the coming weeks.

Testing sites appear to be overwhelmed.

At one site in Houston run by a charity, vehicles snaked around several blocks to receive a free test.

Dr Joseph Gathe of the Cure COVID Consortium, one of the lead doctors running the site, says the virus is rampaging out of control in the state.

"And our response is not in an organised fashion," he said. "We can't get the toothpaste back in the tube but we can stop squeezing... and do what we can with those that have not been able to get things done."

The pandemic has wrenched livelihoods from millions across the country and in Texas, everyone we spoke to queuing up for food parcels in downtown Houston told us they were doing so for the first time.

Proud men and women who have worked all their lives and provided for their families throughout their lives, now stung by the humiliation of relying on others to ensure they are fed.

:: Listen to Divided States on Apple podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, and Spreaker

For Charles Moore, who has a Black Lives Matter mask across his face and is wearing plastic gloves, it is difficult to put into words.

"All my life I've been the one to go and get everything on my own and provide for my family and now I have to depend on someone else to feed me," he said.

"So we doing whatever we have to do just to get by another day."

For people like Mr Moore, it is obviously necessary to take extreme precautions for protection, but also to prevent yourself spreading the disease.

But that's not how some see it.

XRP Rival Has Incredible Potential, Ethereum and Altcoins Set to Outpace Bitcoin, Says Top Crypto Analyst – The Daily Hodl

Veteran trader Peter Brandt says XRP rival Stellar Lumens (XLM) has incredible potential and could be the next altcoin to see significant price action.

Stellar Lumens (XLM) is the native cryptocurrency of the Stellar payment network, which aims to connect banks, financial institutions, payment systems and individuals for fast and secure cross-border transactions.

XLM is currently trading at about $0.095 at the time of writing, and it has gained nearly 50% in value since the end of last month. And according to Brandt, the 14th largest cryptocurrency by market cap may just be getting started.

Brandt, who gained fame in crypto circles for calling Bitcoins big collapse in January of 2018, also says he expects Ethereum and most altcoins to outpace BTC in the short term.

Significant breakout in ETH/BTC with target of .03276. Most alts should gain on Bitcoin in near future.

Last week, crypto YouTuber Nicholas Merten said he believed a new altcoin season had officially arrived after the collective market broke a key line of resistance against BTC.

But Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao says traders should not expect the entire altcoin market to rise without reason.

He says the next altcoin season will require coins to have shown real-world progress and sufficient use cases.

The leftist case for free speech as a tool for justice – Business Insider – Business Insider

A discussion is being had about the value of free speech, the parameters of acceptable discourse, and what some see as a necessary course-correction in social and professional norms.

Triggered by the so-called "Harper's Letter" defending "the free exchange of information and ideas" as "the lifeblood of a liberal society," much of the debate has focused on what level of "problematic" speech should be tolerated and what should be career-ending.

But there's a compelling and less-publicized conversation happening among leftist perspectives arguing that free speech is as vital a principle as ever, no matter which liberal, centrist, and even conservative voices agree.

Among the "Harper's letter"'s co-signers was the patron saint of anti-imperialist socialist academia, Noam Chomsky. He's as critical of American foreign and domestic policy as any living writer, and he continues to insist that the letter needed to be written.

When asked if he was surprised by the level of controversy the letter generated, Chomsky replied that he had received a "stream of letters from left academics and activists relating their experiences, but not wanting to be identified because of the toxic culture."

Chomsky added: "The nature and scale of the reaction reinforce the message of the letter."

Jeet Heer, a national correspondent for the venerable left of center magazine The Nation, defended co-signing the letter in a column titled, "The Left Needs to Reclaim Free Speech." In doing so, Heer called out some of his co-signatories as "the rankest of hypocrites when it comes to free speech," particularly when it comes to the free speech rights of pro-Palestinian voices.

Heer also took aim at "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling for comments that have been slammed as transphobic: "The only way to blunt the impact of someone like Rowling is with more speech with retort, argument, parody and derision."

And just as I noted in a recent column, Heer described free speech is the greatest tool available for minority voices to advocate for their rights against powerful people and institutions who could deny them.

"To secure themselves against the likes of Rowling, trans people have built a vigorous political movement, one that is itself shielded by norms of free speech. A robust culture of free speech serves the cause of trans activism, as it does other progressive causes," Heer wrote.

Another left of center co-signatory of "the letter," New York Times columnist Michelle Goldberg wrote of a complication with binary thinking about free speech.

Citing Nicholas Grossman's article for Arc Digital that credited "private sanction, social pressure and cultural change, driven by activists and younger generations" leading to the banishment of racist and homophobic speech from polite society, Goldberg noted, "when these changes were happening, the right denounced them as violations of free expression."

In an article for the socialist magazine Jacobin, the science writer Leigh Phillips rattled off a litany of free speech and civil liberties violations perpetrated against left voices by the US and other governments, as well as by tech companies. Given such assaults on leftist speech, Phillips wrote of a distressing and cross-partisan "attitude of censorship" that seeks to "abandon due process, presumption of innocence, and other core civil liberties."

"Too many modern progressives, particularly younger ones, have become indifferent to free speech, or, worse, come to view the defense of free speech as something foreign to the Left and a weapon of oppression," Phillips adds. "This is a historic disaster."

Phillps warned: "If the liberal-left denies that illiberalism is occurring when we are the ones perpetrating it ... then we have no leg to stand on when it comes to all these other, innumerable examples. Civil liberties are for everyone, and above all for those we oppose."

The cultural commentator Ayishat Akanbi, in a recent internet video said, "We need to be able to discern between things that we find uncomfortable and things that are hateful, and we can only do that with some intellectual humility, with actually engaging with ideas and trying to see where people are coming from."

Akanbi added: "We need to be challenged otherwise we assume that we know everything, and there is nothing else to be said on something I would say that's the height of intellectual arrogance."

Citing "revolutionary types" who successfully fought for civil rights in the past, Akanbi argued that many of them would not be able to participate in mainstream discourse in today's conditions "because we are completely unforgiving" and unwilling to allow people to make mistakes, evolve, and sharpen their good ideas while getting rid of their bad ones. "You wouldn't want to be judged by your worst moment," Akanbi says.

This is a crucially important point.

We will never, ever get to a place of perfect justice. We will never be at a place where we no longer need to evolve. We will never have all the answers.

For that reason, we must maintain the basic liberal norm that people have the right to hold and express bad even wrong ideas. That doesn't mean speech shouldn't have consequences or that certain ideas shouldn't be considered beyond the pale.

What it means is that the principle of free speech itself can create sometimes infuriating conditions, but the right to free expression gives voice to the dissident. To willfully abandon it under the guise of "justice" is to be ignorant of history and presumptuous of the future.

See Comet NEOWISE Now, Or You’ll Have To Wait 6800 Years To See It Again – WBUR

Don't miss a once-in-6,800-year opportunity. The NEOWISE comet, first discovered in March, hasjust recently become visible to the human eye.

"The last time we had a comet this bright anywhere in our sky, north or south hemisphere, was in 2006," said Kelly Beatty, space reporter and senior contributing editor of Sky and Telescope magazine. "Some people might remember Comet Hale-Bopp back in 1997. This is a little more subtle, but it's still very pretty."

The name NEOWISE isan acronym for the spacecraft that discovered this comet, theNear-Earth Object Wide-field InfraredSurvey Explorer, a NASAspace telescope.

Beatty told Radio Boston that while comets swing by the Earth pretty regularly, they are not always bright enough to be easily visible so take advantage while you can.

On how the comet will look:

"It has a bright point-like head, which you could make out by eye. When you look at it with binoculars, andI encourage that, you see this graceful sort of tail draped upward from it that is telling you this is not an ordinary star by any means."

On how to find the NEOWISE comet in the sky:

"The less light pollution you have, the better. In particular, you need a clear view toward the northwest... Note where the sun sets and around 9 p.m., go out and take a turn to the right. Look up and you'll see the Big Dipper hanging in the sky. If you don't see the Big Dipper, then your chances of seeing the comet are really poor."

"Draw a line visually down from the right edge of the Big Dipper toward the horizon. ... Clench your fist and hold it out at arm's length ... and about one fist above the horizon you will find Comet NEOWISE."

On how he characterizes the makeup of a comet:

"Comets are dirty snowballs. They were created 4.5 billion years ago out on the fringes of our solar system. They have been stone-cold for all that time. This one has fallen in from the great beyond and, when it gets near the sun, the sun's heat vaporizes or technically sublimates the ices on it and causes those gases, along with dust, to go flying off. The comet itself that core is only about three miles across, but it creates this huge cloud of gas and dust around it and the tail, which reflects sunlight, makes it much more obvious than it otherwise would be."

"If this were only an asteroid three miles across, we'd never see it."

Is there anything else you can look for in the sky this month?

"If you are a really early riser, get up and go outside again. You need a clear view in all directions. At 4:30 a.m. right now, you have a chance to see all five of the planets that are visible to the eye...You look toward the east and you'll see a crescent moon and the brilliant planet Venus. Draw a line toward the lower left. That's when you'll come across Mercury, sweep your gaze to the other side of the sky. You'll pass Mars, which is high up, and then over in the southwest are Jupiter and Saturn about to set. Do it now because in a week you won't be able to see all five at one time."

Why more advisors are looking to go independent – The Globe and Mail

The pandemic has increased some introspection among advisors on where they are with their businesses and their desire to have greater control over the client experience.

FG Trade/iStockPhoto / Getty Images

The COVID-19 crisis is inspiring more financial advisors to consider going it alone, empowered by new wealth management technologies and a desire to run their own shops.

The interest comes as advisors discover that managing client relationships from home works well and are questioning their current ties to traditional firms.

As a result, wealth management technology firms are reporting a surge in inbound calls in recent weeks from prospective clients looking for information on how they can support independent advisors.

Story continues below advertisement

For the first time, a lot of advisors had to work from home and are realizing that, Wait a second, maybe I dont need a giant office. What else dont I need? Theyre also realizing that the client doesnt care if they have that big office in downtown Toronto, says Jason Pereira, partner and senior financial consultant at Woodgate Financial Inc., a financial planning firm under the IPC Securities Corp. umbrella.

Crises focus people on what really matters and, in this case, its client relationships. Theres no relationship with the institution, its with the advisors, given that were the ones holding their hands through this [situation]. Its also up to us to maintain it, he adds.

New wealth management technology is also empowering advisors to pursue independence particularly turnkey asset management programs (TAMP), independent technology platforms that allow advisors to outsource activities such as account setup and documentation as well as discretionary portfolio management. The platforms provide advisors with the technology and tools to become an independent investment counsellor portfolio manager (ICPM).

TAMP technology is behind the fast-growing registered investment advisor (RIA) business model in the U.S., which enables advisors to operate independently of large brokerage firms and provide a legal fiduciary obligation to clients. Canada has been slowly building a TAMP ecosystem, but the pace is expected to increase following the pandemic.

You have this underlying trend thats in the early innings. Happening at the same time, this crisis is causing them to reassess the value proposition of the institutions theyre working with, and the cost, Mr. Pereira says.

Toronto-based Purpose Advisor Solutions, which recently launched a TAMP business in Canada, says the past couple of months has been our busiest from an advisor-interest perspective, says Jeff Gans, the firms chief executive officer.

The pandemic has increased a desire among advisors to have greater control the client experience, he says. Some firms have struggled with technology and remote working that has further challenged that thinking.

Story continues below advertisement

Purpose Advisor Solutions enables financial planners, accounting firms and other financial professionals to provide outsourced investment management to their clients. (The firm provides the technology back end while investment-management services are run through its registered entity, Harness Investment Management Inc.)

He says advisors are starting to ask questions about what they want from their business, and are contacting Purpose Advisor Solutions to learn more about what the firm can offer.

Historically, I believe that firms have thought of advisors as salespeople. Advisors are starting to say, Im not a salesperson, Im a business owner and I want to think about my business and delivering the client experience that I want, he says.

Advisors are also feeling empowered by the success of the RIA model in the U.S., Mr. Gans adds.

Fotios Saratsiotis, president of Pascal Financial, a Toronto-based artificial-intelligence-powered wealth management platform, says hes also hearing from advisors frustrated by the technology at their current firms. Many are interested in using new and different technology platforms to work better with clients.

A lot of them have been sitting on the sidelines, he says. COVID-19 is pushing them over the edge to move faster.

Story continues below advertisement

Mr. Saratsiotis says wealth management technology can give advisors more time and bandwidth to deal with more clients with various levels of investible assets.

Stefanie Keller, CEO and certified financial planner at Stellar Wealth & Tax Solutions in Winnipeg, believes independent advisors like her are more nimble and can often adopt technology quicker than some larger organizations.

The pandemic has also shown some advisors they can work independently in a virtual type of environment, she says.

[Advisors] recognize that the big arms around you that people really valued in the past maybe werent as necessary or important as they had been previously, she says. They realized they had the ability to work in different ways, more efficiently.

Ms. Keller believes independents can also provide more efficiency for clients and more choices of products and solutions, including different services that many institutions cant provide, such as life coaching, which her firm offers.

You get to build it how you want to, she says.

Story continues below advertisement

Mr. Gans says a shift toward more independent advisors in Canada will be good for investors and the industry, overall, believing it will spur more innovation and better client experiences.

Theres a ton of innovation ready to be unleashed in Canada, he says. When advisors can go out and set up their own vision .. thats where youre going to get some really unique experiences. When advisors go out and act like business owners, they do some really interesting things. They really focus on their target client segment. The Canadian market is going to benefit from that innovation.

6 Types of Road Trips – How to Plan a Road Trip – countryliving.com

After an unpredictable first half of 2020, Americans can all agree that theyre itching to travel. Road trips have been a huge summer trend in the current climate mainly because many find it safer than flying. Youre in complete control of your adventuretheres no waiting in airport security lines, sitting in crowded spaces, or fees for missing your departure. Theres a sense of adventure thats so satisfying, discovering all that this beautiful country has to offer...right in your backyard.

Based on a recent survey we conducted, we found that people are really looking to reconnect with friends, family and the great outdoors in their travels this summer. More than a third of our respondents ranked wanting to visit family or friends who live within driving distance as their top reason for taking a road trip over safety, says Sheryl Connelly, chief futurist at Ford Motor Company. Considering the impact of social distancing and restrictions on being able to travel or visit loved ones, this makes sense. What we also found is that people are really looking to slow down and make the most of their time away from home. More than 20% wanted to take a road trip just so they could explore and see the sights along the way to their destination.

Planning a road trip has endless opportunities from camping under the stars, checking out National Parks, or even going solo and taking some time for well-deserved self care. Youre not restricted to flying on a schedule, renting a car, and getting a hotel like regular vacations. And its okay if it doesnt go as plannedit might actually make it more fun. Veering off of the itinerary will make for a great adventure. Not sure what type of road trip to take? Here are different types of road trips to see whats best for you.

A solo road trip can be for anyone, but especially for those who are feeling stuck in their life or in search of an adventure. Theres something magical about being on the road exploring American gems, music blasting with the thoughts in your head as your copilot.

Harley Davidson

Youll feel a level of power, confidence, and freedom on a solo road trip that feels so good. I took a solo road trip down Highway 1 in California along the coast to Big Sur, and I just felt so free. I couldnt imagine doing that trip with anyone. Youre completely in control for all decisions from music to where to stop for lunch to where youre sleeping for the night. Even though youre alone, youll make a lot of friends along the wayI still keep in touch with some people I met on hiking trails and during nights out.

Yes, we all know the Grand Canyon (its beautiful and breathtaking), but did you know that there are over 400 National Parks in our Land of the Free? Planning a road trip to visit National Parks is for the history buff and outdoorsy type who enjoys camping.

Josh Carter

The National Park Service has a great website to easily learn and find hidden gems like Bandelier National Monument in New Mexico. Explore Yosemite, plan a camping adventure along the way. Chances are, there are lesser-known National Parks within a few hours of your home that you've never visited.

No matter how close you are with your family, you will definitely learn something new about them after spending so much time together in close quarters on the road. With any road trip, its all about communicating with one another and setting boundaries. Give each other space when neededyou dont need to be on top of each other 24/7.

For me, when Im traveling Im always thinking about what stories Im going to tell my parents. But with a family road trip, we all get to experience it together. I dont need to try explaining these underwhelming stories that usually become a "you had to be there" moment. Its something well be able to reminisce about for years to come.

Best friends are the family we get to choose. They know us better than anyone else, no matter how far life takes us, theyll always be there to pick up your call. Road tripping with your besties can be an awesome time, but its important to assign roles and responsibilities before the trip to avoid conflict during the trip.

A lot goes into researching and planning the itinerary. It wouldnt be fair for just one person in the group to do all of the planning when the rest of your friends just come along without putting in any effort. Your friends each have different interests, which should be discussed ahead of time so the stops on the trip are things that everyone wants to do. With a little teamwork, it will be smooth sailing.

As much as tourists want to see the sights, they also want to taste the local food. For the foodies out there, thats what their trips revolve around. Theyre known for finding the best restaurants, seeking out underground spots, and trying cuisine that they cant get back at home.

Creating a road trip around food can literally go anywhere. Definitely make some stops down south for some true southern hospitality. Along with food, add some brewery tour stops to explore local beer and spirits too.

The road trip that could make or break a relationship. Your relationship is your business, but I wouldnt recommend traveling hours in a car together at a time until your relationship is pretty rock solid. Some bickering is bound to happen, but shouldnt be the reason for a breakup.

A road trip with someone you love is a great way to get to know them better and see them in a way that maybe you didnt see before. Traveling to beautiful sights and camping is always more fun when you have someone to share it with.

No matter which way you road trip, youll get to see America through a lens that perhaps you didnt experience before. After being kept home for months with previous trips cancelled, its a journey of self discovery and learning more about those who join you. It taught me that I didnt need to get on a plane and fly across the Atlantic Ocean to seek adventure. Who knows where the road will take you, but Im sure itll make for a great story.

St. Mike’s reaches for the stars to fill Sutton Family Chair – The Catholic Register

Putting an astrophysicist in the company of medievalists, literature scholars and historians may not seem like a natural fit, but its a perfect match as far as David Sylvester is concerned.

The University of St. Michaels president and vice chancellor figures he has the best person to make the combination work Fr. Adam Hincks, a Jesuit and cosmologist whose study of the universe included working at the Vatican Observatory.

He is the inaugural holder of the Sutton Family Chair in Science, Christianity and Cultures at St. Michaels at the University of Toronto. The Sutton Chair places Hincks as a working scientist in the middle of the St. Mikes Christianity and Culture program, talking with undergraduates about science, culture and religion all at once.

Its all about the spaces between disciplines, said Sylvester.

When you get a guy like Adam Hincks who is incredibly gifted, who is not only promising but is early-established in his career as a very good cosmologist, but who also has theological formation think of the gifts that individual brings to my campus, Sylvester said. Here you have a person who embodies that wholistic understanding of why we exist or the search for it. He doesnt have the answers, but hes searching. Do you know what a gift that is for my students?

The 38-year-old Hincks is a 2004 graduate of St. Michaels who won the St. Michaels College Gold Medal for the highest cumulative GPA (grade point average) in sciences. He went on to Princeton, earning a PhD in 2009 before entering the Jesuits. He studied philosophy at Torontos Regis College and did a Bachelor of Sacred Theology at Romes Pontifical Gregorian University. While in Rome he was one of the scientists at the Vatican Observatory. He also did postdoctoral research at the University of British Columbia.

Hincks, who sees the job as a unique opportunity, is anxious to learn from the students and faculty he will meet at St. Michaels.

I think its great that Im in a program that has medievalists; that has, for example, Stephen Tardif. Hes a Gerard Manley Hopkins expert. As a Jesuit, it will be great to be able to pick his brain about that, just out of personal interest, Hincks said.

Hincks also looks forward to the working with historian of science Jean-Olivier Richard.

In teaching some of these courses, I think we would complement each other quite well, he said. He knows the history of science. He knows the source texts. What I bring is an expertise in whats going on now in cosmology, in astrophysics.
