What does it mean when your technology comes from China? (July 15) – US Embassy in Georgia

(State Dept./D. Thompson)

When your technology comes from companies headquartered in China, it often comes with strings attached.

Chinas National Intelligence Lawrequires all Chinese companies to secretly cooperatewith the Chinese Communist Partys (CCP) intelligence services and security agencies.

U.S. Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo says that while the CCP has long controlled information to maintain its grip on power in China, the ruling party is expanding its reach.

American users ofChinese social media appsin the United States have recently been blocked after uploading content on human rights abuses carried out by the Chinese government. Further, a U.S.-based company known as Zoom wasordered by the CCP to block videoconference supportfor meetings that criticized the CCP. Zoom uses softwaredeveloped by three companies in China.

Chinas leaders use disinformation and malicious cyber campaigns to undermine democratic society, Pompeo told the Copenhagen Democracy Summit June 19. They wont be satisfied until the digital firewall extends to our nations too.

The risks of using Chinese technology are widespread. While a Chinese state-owned construction firm built the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, it also installed Huawei servers. Later, these servers were found to be sending data to Shanghai daily, according to the French newspaperLe Monde.

According to a recent report from The Heritage Foundation, a Washington think tank, the CCP or private Chinese firms have built or renovated 186 government buildings in Africa and installed 14 internal government telecommunications networks.

The reportadds that the Chinese government has provided office equipment, including computers, to 35 African governments.

The CCP is also seeking to control online content outside of China. The Chinese social media apps WeChat and TikTok have been found to monitor and censor users worldwide.

TikTok reads information on certain phones, even when the app is merely running in the background, news reports say. TikToks parent company, ByteDance, hassaid it would stop collecting data, but the practice has continued, according to a June 26 report in The Verge, a technology news website.

TheCCP also uses economic leverage to compelHollywood to portray China in a positive light and punishes studios that dont comply, Vice President Pence said in October 2018.

Zoom acknowledged that it had blocked meetings commemorating the June 4, 1989, crackdown on protesters in Tiananmen Square following CCP demands. Zoom subsequently said it will no longer allow the CCP to block content outside of China.

Technology in the Pandemic: Recreate the Office or Repurpose It? – MIT Sloan

Topics Frontiers

An MIT SMR initiative exploring how technology is reshaping the practice of management.

The pandemic has forced companies to adapt quickly to new realities, including shifting to virtual work arrangements and rethinking short- and long-term business priorities. It has also amplified the role of managers to help employees shape their work lives in effective and healthy ways.

In the office, we socialize on the fly, flit from meeting to meeting seamlessly, and establish routines and patterns that not only work for us but jell with those of others. One of the important decisions that managers confront now, as working remotely becomes standard practice, is how to use technology to recreate these dynamics. Should they attempt to replicate life as it was in brick-and-mortar offices, or does the drastic switch to virtual work necessitate that they try something different?

As the initial shock of the pandemic begins to wane, now is the time to consider how to balance strategically what work used to be and what it is now. We provide a series of ideas for managers on how to approach these considerations as remote work becomes the norm for the foreseeable future and perhaps even permanently.

One of the authors of this article, Eliana, studied the post-bankruptcy reactions of former Lehman Brothers bankers. She found that disruptive events that profoundly alter work circumstances often prompt people to feel a sense of loss and void, akin to what people feel when they mourn the loss of a loved one.

At a minimum, the shift to virtual work has left workers bereft of a common place, of unplanned interactions with their coworkers, and of the vicarious learning opportunities that colocation promotes. As one senior manager at a large educational institution explained to us recently, I miss bumping into people I do not directly work with, catching up with them in the hallway. For me, now its just not the same. I feel Im missing context. Its almost as if I do not know my colleagues as much anymore. Another employee we interviewed, who started her new job just days before switching to remote work, told us, Im trying to learn what Im supposed to do as best I can. I miss shadowing my colleagues who have more experience.

Workers all around the world are grieving a host of aspects related to how, where, and when they used to work.

The study of former Lehman Brothers employees found that in the face of void and loss, workers even those on the same team may mourn unexpected loss differently. The Lehman employees approached their post-bankruptcy work lives in two distinct ways. Some, Recreators, craved the safety of their former work lives. These bankers tried to revive what they had at Lehman by pursuing similar work opportunities often with some of their former colleagues and holding on to the close-knit relationships they had developed while at the company. Others, Repurposers, craved the control that they had over their former work lives. These bankers held on to the spirit of what they had at Lehman but did not try to replicate it. Rather, they repurposed the skills and knowledge they had acquired and pursued different careers, often as entrepreneurs.

These two approaches provide important clues to how managers might try to better understand and manage their now remote employees.

Consider Alicia and Dan. Before going virtual, their days looked approximately the same. Today, both are performing at the same level, but their work situations are very different. Alicia is a Recreator. She currently holds the same schedule as before COVID-19. The only difference for her? Instead of meeting face to face, she meets her colleagues and clients via Zoom, from her home. She even has virtual drinks with her coworkers at the end of the workday. Now consider Dan, a Repurposer. He checks in with his colleagues and clients via email and text periodically throughout the day but completes most of his actual client work at night.

Recreating and repurposing fulfill different needs for employees, especially in times of grief. For Alicia, recreating provides a sense of safety in a time of uncertainty. By keeping the same schedule and regularly meeting with colleagues virtually, she preserves the rhythms of the daily life she had before COVID-19. For Dan, repurposing is about reimagining the execution of tasks to separate the what from the how. Adjusting and time-blocking his new schedule ultimately provides him with a sense of control over his work life.

Companies and managers are seeing these mechanisms play out for their employees in different ways. For example, if face-to-face team meetings are about checking in with one another, Repurposers might maintain some meetings but transform how they happen: They might, for instance, institute asynchronous discussion boards for their teams, as opposed to arranging synchronous virtual calls.

So, how should managers make the choice of recreating or repurposing?

Remember that people are coping with sudden, unexpected loss in individual ways. What employees need most from their managers and colleagues, and what they are finding most challenging, will vary from person to person. Have honest conversations with your own employees about what they most miss from being in the office and what their current constraints are. Do they miss the safety and regularity of routine? If so, work with them to recreate certain aspects of their work lives. For example, they might have started each morning with a cup of coffee and small talk in the break room. Offer to host a virtual morning break room with your team to simulate that routine. Do they miss the ability to control their work environment and to concentrate without other family members around? If so, work with them to repurpose. For instance, allow them flexibility in when they work (for example, before or after their children go to bed) and how (for example, reduce asynchronous meetings during the daytime).

Working virtually allows employees to choose whether to repurpose or recreate their office lives. Rather than leaving this choice solely in their hands, such that each person on a team may approach his or her work differently, consider setting a company or team strategy that offers guidance. To do so, you might brainstorm with your employees about the aspects of office life they individually miss, and then help them either recreate or repurpose such aspects. A framework for such a conversation might be as simple as these two questions: Is there anything from your work life pre-COVID-19 that you no longer have but would help you meet your professional and/or personal goals? How might we incorporate that based on your current life?

It is also important to recognize the limits of recreating and repurposing. Giving employees complete autonomy over recreating or repurposing may ultimately erode their ability to form and maintain regular cadence with coworkers. The second author of this article, Beth, researched virtual workers and found that having consistent cadence with coworkers being able to predict the time and mode of interacting determines the quality of remote workers relationships. To foster such cadences, consider instituting virtual collective routines, such using collaboration tools and discussion forums to clarify when employees are available and when they are not.

Finally, recreating is unlikely to bring back the face-to-face office experience, and it may be difficult (or even impossible) when individuals are trying to balance additional duties such as home schooling their children. Setting realistic expectations for a recreating strategy is thus critical. Because repurposing shifts the focus of work from process to outcomes, recreating can be particularly challenging to enact when work is highly collaborative and interdependent especially when there are Recreators and Repurposers working together toward the same goal. Communicating expectations, deadlines, and processes clearly is thus especially critical.

It takes thousands of hours of practice and constant feedback on performance to become an expert at anything, including being a virtual worker. As you and your employees navigate this monumental switch, think of yourselves as novice experts people who are expected to have mastered being expert virtual workers without the requisite experience of being an expert. This means that although you may have a general strategy to repurpose or recreate, preferences might shift from repurposing to recreating and vice versa as employees better understand the pros and cons of each approach. As a manager, being patient and supportive when preferences shift and mistakes happen will foster a psychologically safe environment in which your employees will likely better cope with their uncertainty and grief.

At its core, dealing with sudden and unexpected loss is about holding on and letting go. Having honest conversations with your employees and setting a clear strategy for recreating, repurposing, or a combination of the two will help you manage through this uncertain time and prepare more effectively for this new age of virtual work.

Technology in the Pandemic: Recreate the Office or Repurpose It? - MIT Sloan

How technology is proving to be a great enabler in molding the future of advertising industry – The Financial Express

BySaurabh Sharma

Technology thrives changes to the every aspect of our lives today, and in the field of advertising it is witnessing path-breaking discoveries every day that are being driven by the evolution of technology like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Augmented Reality (AR), Machine Learning and the growing use of designing software. Global advertising spend is set to grow 6% to $656 billion in 2020 as per the earlier data of market research firm WARC. Artificial Intelligence skills have become the fastest growing skills among the professional networking platform. AI and Machine Learning specialists will emerge as the top two important roles by 2022, according to the future of jobs 2018 report.

Though the traditional mode of interaction based learning that has deep-rooted traditions in the country cannot be replaced completely by technology, it has become relevant to enhance the often-used techniques to limit and join the gap between the existing skills of new employee demands. In return, the employees will have access to globally developed and industry relevant courses, adding on to their skills and giving them a higher rate of success of finding the right occupation.

In recent years, the advertising industry has experienced drastic changes and has found it difficult to keep up with the same stride of technology. Earlier the industry, which was dominated by electronic and print, is now getting disorganised, and different media platforms are used to reach the right target audience. Usage of authenticated personalised data to create more specific ad content has forced many agencies to get into a survival mode. The future of ad agencies and advertising as a profession lies in the ability to swim against the direction as per current scenario of technology while remaining creative at the same time. Of course, this is not an easy task and there are multiple ways technology will influencing the future of advertising. Let us take a quick look at the coming days off advertising shaped by technology, and the new media tools you might want to consider if you are an agency looking to advertise. Here are the top trends.

Location based data mining to influence advertising

Currently, location-based data is mostly used for marketing communication purposes. However, in the near future, more advertisers will look at rolling the campaigns specifically based on location data to check how deep they run in the water. GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) may rule in favor of advertisers because many people give permission for their location based data to be used. Earlier a grey area, now it gives a clear pathway to target people in specific locations. Mobile devices will help predict trends as well. In fact, advertising campaign strategy will begin to rely on authenticated data more now than ever before.

Traditional advertising to Digital- A Paradigm Shift

Digital advertising is catching up with electronic media. The share of advertising budget is equal at 45% for both TV and digital mediums. Print comes at a 10% outlay in advertising budgets. What this really tells us is that there is a paradigm shift taking place in the advertising industry, where campaigns are now written by default for digital platforms, and TV and print are becoming old school of thoughts. We have witnessed the convergence of digital and traditional advertising, which actually has taken place if you notice the figures. In the near future, the share of TV is likely to fall further, with a potential for print to increase with an increased shelf life.

Rich info-graphics and return to innovation in offline creativity

With online advertising becoming engaging and more serious, ad creators will find more freedom to innovate and experiment in print. Online advertising with more frequency at lesser intervals have already become mainstream and is subject to decision makers opinion and strategy, leading to less elbow room for creative professionals. On the flip side, print will see an exponential gradual return to creativity. Additionally, expensive ad campaigns may actually be run via print media, simply because those who still tend to stick to print medium tend to be more affluent. In other words, digital will encourage print to become more niche, and that is how the offline creativity will get the new life and it will lead to the revival of traditional advertising.

App enabled advertising is a fueling factor for GenX

Digital advertising is fueled by mobile users along with virtual reality platforms, and it is no surprise that the future of advertising will depend on artificial intelligence and how agencies tap into this medium. Usage of application-based services have increased dramatically in the last few months, especially for online shopping experiences. In-app ads and users geo-location together can transform the way we understand advertising today. Moreover, we have the validated data of our end users to create a long term relation and build the bond of trust for any new launches and run the loyalty programs among their customers.

Personalised Ads- A trend in market

Much of the changes taking place in the advertising industry is due to authenticated data that we collected from different platforms. Data is helping ad managers to access insight that was previously impossible, and thats leading to a greater degree of personalisation and allowing us to run loyalty programs. Personalisation of ads is important because digital ads can be targeted as per the category wise segmentation of the customers and rarely enter the periphery of perception of web users. Without personalising the communication, you stand the risk of being blocked or just being ignored and as a result google with consider you a spam.

Focus on content

Another important trend is the quality and uniqueness of the content. So, it is very different from creating ad content for print or electronic media. Advertisers will need to focus on the quality of content and infographics to ensure that they are filled with rich media in order to attract the attention of end users. In fact, ad content has to be more informative and realistic than convincing. Convincing and creative campaigns may find better use in print media offline.

Russia ready to share COVID-19 vaccine technology with other countries – WION

Russia`s Gamaleya Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology has reportedly successfully produced a coronavirus vaccine which, it claims, is more advanced than itsWestern counterparts.

Alexander Gintsburg, the institute head, has extended a friendly hand to the western countries and said that Russia will be happy to sharethe technology with foreign colleagues, if they require.

"Our technology is patented, unique and with parameters which, I feel confident to claim, exceed the capabilities of analogous products being developed in the West," Gintsburg said, adding that "most probably, if there is any borrowing, it will be our immunization scheme to be borrowed, and we will be happy to share our hacks with the colleagues, should they need."

Gintsburg claimed that the institute has been developing the used technology for the past 25 years.

He explained that the said vaccine is made up of two injected components that will, together, help people get a long-term immunity against the novel coronavirus.

A part of the 22 monitored vaccine by the WHO, the Gamaleya vaccine has already begun clinical trials on humans at two institutions in Russia: the Sechenov University and the Burdenko Main Military Clinical Hospital.

Wind Farm Trying to Find New Locations to Bring Offshore Wind Project Onshore – wrde.com

BETHANY BEACH, Del.-Changes to the controversial wind farm project off the Delaware and Maryland coast.

Originally, the energy company proposed building its interconnection facility in Fenwick Island State Park. That's no longer the case, but new ideas could still keep the project in Delaware.

Components for the proposed Skipjack Wind Farm may now be headed North. Since Orsted pivoted away from the original plans in Fenwick Island State Park, the company now says it's looking at the Bethany, Cedar Neck area to connect its offshore wind power to the grid. But a decision for an exact landfall location has not been finalized.

Orsted says while it hasn't decided between Bethany Beach and Cedar Neck it does hope to announce an alternative site within the coming weeks. Orsted has long said the project will bring clean energy and good paying jobs, but Senator Gerald Hocker doesn't see the modified plans working out.

Hocker said, "The public was strongly against the Fenwick Island and I don't know why they would think any different on bringing it in Bethany."

Many people have expressed concerns about the wind farm and tourism. But the Bethany-Fenwick Chamber of Commerce says a Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce, where an Orsted wind farm was built in 2016, reported little to no negative impact on tourism. Orsted says the Skipjack wind farm will be a project the area is proud of, but Hocker says a proposal to bring transmission lines to Bethany Beach in the late 2000s failed, and he sees similarities with Orsted's plans.

Hocker said, "The transmission line problem came up and everybody fought that, they did not want it in the exact areas where Orsted is talking about now."

Orsted says it's committed to construction the wind farm and associated infrastructure in a way that seeks to mitigate potential adverse impacts on local ecosystems and communities. The company says it still hopes to build Skipjack wind farm by late 2023, though it still awaits necessary permit approvals.

Trump sours on online learning that his administration evangelized – POLITICO

In events and media appearances over the past several weeks, the White House and administration officials have repeatedly insisted that the nations schools and colleges must physically reopen classes and that online instruction, fully or partially, isnt an appropriate alternative. Theyve threatened to use federal funding as a lever to prod schools into physically reopening.

The Trump administration has been clear that its concerned that schools remaining closed would be a drag on the economic recovery that the president is banking on ahead of the November election. "If we don't reopen the schools that would be a setback to a true economic recovery, Larry Kudlow, Trumps top economic adviser said this week.

Trump blasted Los Angeles school officials earlier this week for a terrible decision to keep the nations second-largest school district online-only when classes start in several weeks. Many other large school districts across the country are also defying Trumps demands to physically reopen.

Its not a matter of if schools should reopen, its simply a matter of how, DeVos has repeated several times in recent weeks as shes become a main spokesperson for the Trump administrations push to reopen schools. Schools, she has said, must fully open and they must be fully operational.

But the Trump administrations focus on in-person instruction in traditional school buildings is a stark change for DeVos, who has long been an ardent proponent of virtual schools and individualized digital learning options for students.

As secretary of Education, she has also taken action to promote online instruction in both K-12 schools and higher education, steering money and grants toward digital learning options and scaling back federal regulations in order to promote distance education.

DeVos last year traveled the country on a Rethink Education tour in which she repeatedly called for education leaders to question longtime assumptions about what K-12 and higher education looks like which she noted hasn't changed much in several centuries.

It's past time to ask some of the questions that often get labeled as non-negotiable or just don't get asked at all, DeVos said during a 2018 speech. Among them: Why do students have to go to a school building in the first place?

DeVos also touted high-quality virtual charter schools as valuable option during her confirmation process. She and her husband previously were investors in K12 Inc., one of the nations largest virtual school companies.

Kevin Chavous, the longtime Democratic education reformer who previously served on the board of DeVos school choice advocacy organization, the American Federation for Children, is now a top executive at K12.

The administration has generally been supportive of parent choice, Chavous said, but he acknowledged that message feels more scrambled when you try to truncate the choice options into an either/or decision between fully online and brick-and-mortar options.

School districts can find a way to open by finding fully online options in a thought-out way or blended options depending on the status of the virus in their jurisdiction, he said. We should really be tailoring our approach in a solutions way instead of having some political conversation.

Emergency online or remote learning as its been administered by some school districts isnt the same as online schools administered by people who know what theyre doing, he said.

Chavous said K12 Inc. has seen unprecedented interest from school districts and parents since the start of the pandemic, adding that the company is looking to hire 1,300 new teachers.

John Bailey, who served as a White House domestic policy adviser to President George W. Bush, said there is a puzzling disconnect between Trumps criticism of schools opting for online education and his Education Departments previous celebration of local choices.

I cant make sense of it because it just shows an utterly dysfunctional federal government, said Bailey, who is also a visiting fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. He said the Trump administrations criticism of online education in recent days has been a distraction for schools that have just several weeks left to plan for the fall.

As coronavirus cases soar in many parts of the country, Bailey said he expected that most schools will adopt some type of mix of online and in-person instruction this fall.

Everyone knows online learning was not great for a lot of teachers and students and in the spring, he said. The focus now needs to be on how we provide the best hybrid learning and online learning not debating, Should the school be open five days a week or not?

As an example, Bailey said, a major problem this spring was how little time teachers and students interacted through online platforms. He cited Census data showing that virtual instruction in American households averaged just a handful of hours each week. We should be incentivizing more instructional time, not reopening schools, he said.

In higher education, too, DeVos has spent most of her time in office seeking to advance online education as an innovative way to bring college costs down.

DeVos new proposed regulation on online learning in higher education which was unveiled in the midst of the pandemic but had been in the works for more than a year before would make it easier for online colleges to access federal student aid.

Its pretty clear that the rhetoric were hearing right now is entirely politically motivated because of how inconsistent it is with what the administration has been doing, said Clare McCann, deputy director for federal higher education policy at New America.

McCann, who also worked at the Obama Education Department, has been critical of the Trump administrations deregulatory approach to online learning as have other critics and consumer advocacy groups, who argue that there are too few federal guardrails for quality in the programs.

Those critics see irony in Trumps sudden criticism on the quality of distance learning as hes rushing to reopen schools. Theres no doubt that online education is really hard to do right, McCann said. At the same time, quality has not a big concern from this administration when it comes to online education.

Beyond seeking to change regulations, DeVos also threw a lifeline to one of the nations most prominent online schools, Western Governors University, in rejecting an inspector generals finding that the school ran afoul of federal law governing how much and how frequently instructors and students must interact to qualify for student aid. The final online regulations DeVos finalized also eases that requirement of regular and substantive interaction between instructors and students going forward.

In March, the Education Department also used emergency powers to loosen the rules for how accreditors could approve online learning in higher education telling colleges they didnt necessarily need to adopt elaborate online learning platforms to win approval.

During a discussion about reopening schools at Louisiana State University this week, DeVos struck a more careful tone on the role of the online learning that Trump has slammed as inadequate.

While distance learning works well for some kids, it doesnt work well for others, DeVos said during a roundtable discussion with Vice President Mike Pence. Thats why Ive always believed that education needs to meet the needs of students, not the other way around.

Angela Morabito, a department spokesperson, emphasized that DeVos wants schools to be fully reopened in the fall but acknowledges that there may be some exceptions to the rule depending on the local health situation.

DeVos is focused on getting schools to provide a full academic year of learning that respects each students unique circumstances, she said. All hybrid plans are not created equal.

Threat of a Trump without rallies triggers fears across GOP – POLITICO

The nursing home industry has been pushing for looser regulations for years. And they got what they wanted at the start of the pandemic. But now, advocates say lax standards are fueling the virus' spread.

One senior administration official said the lack of recognition some of Trumps top aides have paid to coronavirus has done irreversible damage to his reelection campaign. Internal divisions over how much focus Trump should lend to the virus have plagued the White House in recent weeks. Chief of staff Mark Meadows and senior adviser Jared Kushner have both pushed the president to focus on communicating a strong second-term agenda, including measures he would take to help bring the U.S. economy roaring back to life, while others have encouraged him to focus on combating the virus itself given its widespread impact on most peoples lives.

If you solve the virus problem, almost everything else will solve itself, said the senior administration official.

Instead of attending meetings with health officials alongside Vice President Mike Pence, the president has been eager to resume a demanding campaign schedule that mirrors his approach in 2016. When Trump has weighed in on the viral pandemic, it has been tangential: Last week, he hosted a White House event to discuss the reopening of schools this fall. But he has consistently attributed the rising number of cases in southwestern states to increased testing capabilities, even as other administration officials acknowledge that testing alone cannot statistically account for surges in most areas.

In an interview with CBS on Tuesday, Trump said Covid-19 testing in the U.S. has been working too well.

Were finding thousands and thousands of cases, he told the network.

Campaign staffers who scrambled to get the president back in front of the large audiences he craves were so shaken by the Tulsa episode they waited until the eleventh hour to call off his New Hampshire rally for fear of upsetting him, according to the two people close to the campaign. Staffers who were already on the ground in Portsmouth, N.H., a riverfront city situated in a county Trump handily won in 2016, were caught off guard last Friday when their colleagues alerted them of the change. One campaign volunteer, who questioned the reasoning at the time, noted that intense humidity was the only weather-related issue on the ground and suggested that Parscale postponed the event until the campaign could guarantee larger crowds.

A spokesperson for the Trump campaign said the rally was expected to be rescheduled in the next one or two weeks, and disputed claims that it was postponed for any reason other than the forecast. The same spokesperson on Tuesday said there was nothing to announce about when the rally might be rescheduled.

President Trump and his campaign are continuing to stay engaged with both in-person and digital events, said Erin Perrine, director of press communications for the campaign. Just this week, we hit over 1 billion video views since April across all our social media platforms. Last week, President Trump hosted a roundtable in Miami, Vice President Pence had a hugely successful bus tour in Pennsylvania and Women for Trump just finished up a bus tour in Wisconsin.

New Hampshire is one of several states Trump lost in 2016 that his campaign is now eyeing to make up for potential losses elsewhere in November. His first-place finish in the states 2016 primary, followed by a narrow loss to Democrat Hillary Clinton in the general election, revealed the surprising strength of Trumps populist brand in a state known for its independent and late-breaking voters. Inside his campaign and among his supporters, Trumps Portsmouth rally was seen as a chance to restart his reelection campaign in a state that boasts a sizable population of enthusiastic MAGA fans.

President Trumps affinity to New Hampshire is because it all started here for him, and he has a loyal following here, said Corky Messner, a Trump-endorsed Republican running to unseat Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen. The four electoral votes in New Hampshire could potentially be very important.

With civil libertarians, its often one-way traffic – The Age

Who are these dictators and defendersTom Switzer believes self-righteous activists are dictating to the rest of us how we should feel. I wonder who Switzer a white male and former advisor to the Howard and Abbott governments, as well as a TV talking head, a broadcaster and an editor imagines the rest of us are.

I also wonder why Switzer, on the payroll of free market think tank the Centre for Independent Studies, takes this dictatorship personally, writing: I have been denounced in these pages and elsewhere for holding unfashionable views from praising John Howard, Boris Johnson and free-market capitalism to criticising the ABC and millennial socialism and those activists who claim Australia is a racist nation.

Switzer writes that thought police are everywhere, but his commentary doesnt allow them to speak for themselves: instead they must be spoken for. The cancel-culture defenders, he writes, say attitudes have changed and that marginalised groups are starting to gain equal footing in society. Why, then, are they so afraid of a debate?

Who are these dictators and defenders, and why are oppressed mainstream media commentators such as Switzer so afraid to name them?Katherine Wilson, Healesville

Save us from the echo-chamber of cultural cleansingTom Switzer is spot on. The irony of the dangerous cancel culture movement sweeping the globe is that it risks destroying the very liberal democratic culture it seeks to cleanse.

Liberal democracies thrive in an environment of free speech, rigorous debate, respectful, robust intellectual scholarship and evidence-based discourse in which opinions stand or fall on the strength of their arguments. Thats why journalism and newspapers are the first to be attacked when demagogues stalk the land.

Nazis, by their intimidation, violence and intolerance of difference, wrote the handbook on how to destroy liberal democracy. George Orwells seminal novels Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four prophesyse about such techniques to create a totalitarian state. Orwell wrote about cancel culture in his novels well before the term was invented. Its not new.

God save us from the self-righteous echo-chamber of cultural cleansing, the stifling of proper, respectful debate and the re-writing of history. Theres an exciting chapter on the history of BLM yet to be written. Let it be written by the future and not re-written from the past.Nick Toovey, Beaumaris

Selective writing about freedom of speechTom Switzer writes selectively about freedom of speech. He fails to propose an end to defamation actions. No mention of varying degrees of anti-protest laws in jurisdictions around Australia. He fails to condemn federal government attacks on journalists. He doesnt challenge the right of employers to deny free speech to employees. What is his game?Darryl Pyrke, Blackmans Bay, Tas.

A disingenuous claimWe live in Singapore and have been planning our return home to Australia since early January, well before this ballooned into a pandemic.

We couldnt throw our Melbourne tenants out onto the street during the first lockdown, so our return was delayed until August.

It is disingenuous for Scott Morrison to claim everyone has had sufficient time families have to organise and line up employment, multiple school enrolments and rental leases.

We are happy to pay for quarantine however the latest medical evidence shows the virus is only infectious for the first eight days, so a 14-day quarantine is no longer justifiable.

I am happy with Scott Morrisons response to the pandemic but please get your facts straight before blaming, criticising and wrongfully punishing your own citizens.Richard Bourke, Singapore

A sad, but true, imageColumnist Anson Cameron (Welcome to wasteland, Spectrum, 11/7) has painted a sad, but true, image of Port Melbournes Station Pier and Waterfront Place.

For some time, the Beacon Cove Neighbourhood Association has been advocating for the revitalisation of the area by creating a precinct overseen by an independent body, bringing together all interested parties. Our proposal has been met with a lukewarm response.

Establishing a precinct run by an independent authority would result in a planned, strategic redevelopment of the area by overcoming competing forces and current restrictions and meet the needs of the residents and Victorians generally. By doing this, Melbournes gateway could be repolished and returned to a vital economic and community hub.Eddie Micallef, president, Beacon Cove Neighbourhood Association, Port Melbourne

An amazing assumptionWe are all aware of the danger of close contact with others at the moment. It is amazing that there is an assumption teachers are immune to this.

Could we not rethink the selection process for university places in 2021 (which is the reason given for the importance of year 12 students and their teachers returning to school) and simply develop a new test or requirement for entry? There are many valid examples available.

Our teachers health and wellbeing, when devoid of the protective measures utilised within the health sector, surely warrant close consideration?Julie McCormack, Brunswick West

Toxic politickingJust to remind everyone that Victorian Liberal state MP Tim Smith began this pandemic with a batty plan to remove all bats from Kew, complaints that we werent open early for Mothers Day, complaints that golfers were hard done by, and now hed like Dan Andrews to resign probably so he can crow about Andrews stepping out on Victorians during a crisis.

Smiths social media presence has been a blight on Victorian politics; I cant believe the Victorian Liberals are proud of the fact that hes one of their own. Along with his colleagues; theyve seemingly decided that supporting any lockdown and safety measures is signalling soft support for Andrews, instead of care for the community.

Its toxic politicking and all of them should hang their heads in shame and know that Dan Andrews has got more class in his little finger than all of them put together.Danielle Binks, Frankston

Surely this is good newsI have just finished reading your article about the ICU at the former Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre remaining empty ($30m ICU at former hospital still empty, 13/7).

I wouldve thought that this is good news not bad since we have not yet been overwhelmed with cases requiring ICU treatment.

It seems to me that the building of this unit ahead of time showed foresight and should not be criticised. Talk about dammed if you do and damned if you dont.

Overall Daniel Andrews and his government seem to have done a really good job in combating the coronavirus pandemic despite one or two failures and should be encouraged rather than criticised.Peter Meadley, Ballarat

Missing the pointContainment of the virus is the catch-cry of both the Education Minister and the Premier, but they are missing the point when it comes to opening schools within COVID-19 hot spots.

I am one of many teachers who commute into metropolitan hot spot schools from Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong, Gisborne, Sunbury, Castlemaine and many smaller regional communities.

Education Minister James Merlino has not foreseen or addressed this issue. Perhaps containment of the virus to hot spots would have more chance of success if Harry Potter could cast an appropriate spell.Nick DAglas, Woodend

An unhappy shopperOn Saturday morning I went to a large supermarket in order to do some much-needed shopping for groceries.

I was disappointed given the advice from the Chief Health Officer, Brett Sutton, on Friday not to see more people wearing masks and making more of an effort to keep their distance. However, what was really concerning was that none of the staff were wearing masks and the onus was entirely on the customers as to whether or not the trolley handles were cleansed with disinfectant wipes.

If the supermarket chains CEO truly has the wellbeing of customers close to his heart as he persistently claims in his frequent emails to rewards cardholders he should act quickly to address the concerns I have raised here.Ivan Glynn, Vermont

Unfairly singled outIn Lockdown: How we stuffed it up (Naked City, The Age, 11/7), John Silvester wrote that security guards are blamed for the COVID-19 spike, although it is not clear whether he holds them accountable for the total increase of the past few weeks.

Three security companies supplied hotel quarantine guards but he only goes into detail about one firm naming it and shaming it.

While quick to disparage Unified Security, he fails to acknowledge the company was a finalist in six excellence awards from the NSW Business Chamber and Local Business Awards in 2018 and 2019, winning three.

He gives the location of the Melbourne office, cites two company cars in Indigenous livery and quotes from their website that Unified is Australias largest wholly Australian and Indigenous-owned security company. Why emphasise the Indigenous connection?

Details of the names, offices and cultural profile of the other two firms were not supplied. Are we to conclude they were blameless so not worth profiling?

Why is it acceptable to sarcastically attack Unified Security and yet a few paragraphs later say the three security companies have established track records?

The article unjustly targets one specific company in a sea of comments about the whole security industry in Australia.Sue Watson, Paynesville

Qualified supportIts a bit rich for conservative Liberal MPs and intellectuals to condemn perceived attacks on free expression when the same people hysterically attack the right of those expressing views contrary to themselves on such matters as the commemoration of Captain Cooks arrival in Australia and the celebration of Australia Day and Anzac Day.

A recent example was when some Victorian Liberal Party politicians and right-wing commentators called for the removal of Victorias Deputy Chief Health Officer, Annaliese van Diemen, for posting a controversial tweet about Captain Cook.

No right to free expression there.

And who can forget the hounding of television presenter Yassmin Abdel-Magied out of both the ABC and out of Australia after her controversial Facebook post about Anzac Day in April 2017.Garry Meller, Bentleigh

Anger and apprehensionThis lockdown round, Victorian teachers and parents are expressing anger and apprehension at the return to face-to-face schooling of VCE students. Disturbingly, there are letters with the name withheld, indicating fear not only of the virus, but of retribution for speaking out.

For many Victorians, trust in their government has taken a battering due to significant errors in its handling of the virus. Will this return to face-to-face teaching in reportedly deep-cleaned schools, with classes of 25-plus young adults, no social distancing, and masks discouraged, be another error?

Perhaps teachers and students should take it upon themselves to socially distance the classroom tables if thats even possible and wear masks?

And, perhaps teacher unions, parents, teachers, students and legal firms should be looking at possible class action should any COVID-19 cases and deaths be traced back to this return to school.Deborah Morrison, Malvern East

Breach after breachHeres an idea instead of fining people for COVID-19 regulation breaches, why not make them undertake some hours in community service at a testing station? This reality check might just shake up those foolish enough, like the car of Victorians who tried to cross the Queensland border several times and mocked the $4000 fine they were each issued, to realise this is not some joke they can laugh off.

Over the weekend I witnessed breach after breach of some of the most simple aspects of social distancing. Exceptionalism has taken hold of too many who think along the lines of oh it wont happen to me or its just a small breach, it wont make a difference or well others arent, so why should I? Just take a scroll through Instagram if you need any proof of this.

If you care about your own health and that of your friends and family, take this seriously and abide by the regulations.

If not, prepare for many, many more months of lockdown, infections and deaths.Paul Bugeja, Footscray

Stopping the spreadIf Premier Daniel Andrews wants us to follow the rules, to only go out when you need to, and to only go out for the purposes that are lawful, why are the shopping malls and retail stores open?Nadine McMaster, Port Melbourne

I agree with Andrew Gemmell (Letters, 12/7), maybe it is time masks should be worn on all forms of public transport as a courtesy to other passengers to help limit the spread of all sorts of illnesses (not just COVID-19).Maria Wickham, Mount Nelson, Tas.

Sunday on the Gardiners Creek walking loop: hundreds of people, and I counted 11 wearing masks. Not good enough, folks. We are all in this together.Brian Marshall, Ashburton

The footyIts hard to believe now but AFL used to be described as the best game in the world.John Hennessy, Glen Iris

Scott MorrisonWhile I dont begrudge our Prime Minister attending his beloved game, I am less than impressed that he was not self-distancing or wearing a mask.Susan Munday, Bentleigh East

Empty ICU bedsUntil or unless the former Peter Mac building is required for COVID-19 care (The Age, 13/7), couldnt it provide temporary housing for homeless people or those fleeing domestic violence?Mary Cole, Richmond

The fact that the emergency ICU at the old Peter Mac remains unused is a testament to the success of the initial Victorian lockdown in suppressing COVID-19. We can only hope that it remains empty.Nick Barton, Hillside

FurthermoreSo, the reason teachers are not allowed to wear masks is it stops them teaching properly. What really stops a teacher teaching is contracting COVID-19.Susan Caughey, Glen Iris

FinallyOur grandma got out her sewing machine and made individual masks for the whole family. Grandmas are beautiful people.Peter Finn, Tallarook

Rio Tinto using virtual reality glasses to get experts to the front line – Yahoo Finance UK

Mining giant Rio Tinto has been putting experts on the ground at one of its sites by using virtual reality headsets during the coronavirus pandemic, as the disease cut into production.

Staying far away from the companys copper mines in Mongolia and the US, experts have been able to weigh in remotely.

It has allowed them to get past travel restrictions caused by the Covid-19 outbreak, Rio said.

At our Oyu Tolgoi underground project in Mongolia, the use of virtual reality glasses has helped gain access to global experts to support project progression during construction and commissioning stages, the company said in an update to investors on Friday morning.

The business reported a 3% drop in the amount of copper it managed to dig out of the ground in the second quarter of the financial year.

Meanwhile, restrictions in Quebec and South Africa have meant that titanium dioxide slag production dropped 13% compared with the same period a year earlier.

Rio said Chinese customers are still demanding large amounts of iron ore, but it warned that recovery in Japan and Europe is yet to begin meaningfully and is likely to be subdued when it does.

Chief executive Jean-Sebastien Jacques said: We delivered a strong performance, particularly in iron ore and bauxite, demonstrating the underlying resilience of our business and ability to adapt in difficult conditions.

Our iron ore assets are performing well in a strong pricing environment and we are on track to meet our 2020 iron ore guidance.

Despite various Covid-19-related challenges, all our assets have continued to operate, with our first priority to protect the health and safety of all our employees and communities.

Chief executive Jean-Sebastien Jacques said Rio Tinto is trying to get on with business as usual (Dominic Lipinski/PA)

Our focus is to maintain a business-as-usual approach with many safeguards at a very unusual time.

Our operational teams are continuing to run our assets safely so we can continue to contribute to local and national economies and serve our customers.

The news comes amid a controversy surrounding the destruction by Rios miners of a 46,000-year-old indigenous cultural site at Juukan Gorge in Western Australia.

Addressing the issue, Mr Jacques said: We remain even more committed to our relationship with communities, following the Juukan Gorge events in the Pilbara, and we are engaging extensively with traditional owners around our operations and across Australia.
