Indoor Bar Service Without Food Banned Starting Friday As City Starts ‘Retightening’ Coronavirus Restrictions – Block Club Chicago

CHICAGO Starting Friday, bars and breweries without a food license can no longer serve customers indoors, the Mayors Office announced Monday.

The new restrictions come just weeks after Chicago moved to Phase 4 of the coronavirus recovery plan, which allowed indoor dining and drinking at limited capacity.

But the average number of new cases per day is on the rise in Chicago, with the increase driven by people age 18-29, officials have said. Hoping to cut back on the rise in new cases, officials said theyre trying to limit opportunities for young people to gather and transmit the virus.

Indoor bars are known to be one of the higher-risk scenarios for transmitting coronavirus, hence the new restrictions, said Dr. Allison Arwady, head of the Chicago Department of Public Health, during a call with reporters Monday.

Thats because being indoors has a higher risk for transmitting COVID-19 than being outdoors, bars attract younger people, indoor bars make it harder to social distance, people drinking arent able to wear masks, and bars are loud, meaning people have to raise their voices to talk, Arwady said.

New rules for bars and restaurants starting Friday morning:

Sam Toia, president and CEO of the Illinois Restaurant Association, said this is terrible news for the industry and urged people to follow public health guidelines to prevent the bad situation from getting worse.

Sliding backwards in our phasing is terrible news for bars that have started to reopen indoors and are trying to stay afloat, Toia said. While bars with outdoor seating may continue to operateandrestaurants can still provide both al fresco and dine-inexperiences it is more critical than ever that all operators, their employees and guests adhere to the guidelines established by leading health experts.

Toia said social distancing and wearing masks properly is the way to move the city forward and to help an industry devastated by COVID-19.

The city is also cracking down on personal services and gyms. The city made those restrictions based on where theyre seeing coronavirus spread, Arwady said.

New restrictions starting Friday for other industries:

Whats also been problematic is younger people gathering with friends. Arwady said younger people with coronavirus are more likely to report gathering with people who arent part of their household.

Were seeing people are one day hanging out with a group of five to 10 people and the next day a different group of five to 10 people and throughout all of that youre bringing that risk potential back into your household, Arwady said.

Most transmission is happening in more private settings, and thats because people feel safe, Arwady said. But people should not be having close interactions with dozens of people day after day after day, because you put everyone at risk for catching and transmitting COVID-19.

Last week, Arwady said she expected the city would have to roll back some reopening protocols as cases climbed.

For weeks, the city was seeing fewer than 200 new cases per day on average, putting it in a moderate-high incidence category as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

But as of Monday, Chicagos seeing an average of 233 new cases per day and is back in the high-incidence of coronavirus category, and its positivity rate is at 5 percent.

For all of those reasons, we felt strongly that it was necessary to work to take some focused actions now, Arwady said. The goal, of course, is to take focused actions now that are able to keep us from having to take the very large steps backwards that we want to avoid at all costs .

The numbers are not a cause for alarm, and the increase is not as bad in Chicago as it has been elsewhere in the country. But the city should take serious steps now while we can still get our arms around this increase, Arwady said.

Arwady said people can help prevent the spread of coronavirus by wearing masks, practicing social distancing and not gathering with people.

The city could once again loosen restrictions if the average number of new cases goes down, Arwady said.

I hope next week well be able to show that things have stabilized or perhaps started to decrease, Arwady said.

The citys Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection will host webinars this week to update businesses on the new restrictions starting Wednesday. Sign up here.

Baby Was Infected With Coronavirus in Womb, Study Reports – The New York Times

Researchers on Tuesday reported strong evidence that the coronavirus can be transmitted from a pregnant woman to a fetus.

A baby born in a Paris hospital in March to a mother with Covid-19 tested positive for the virus and developed symptoms of inflammation in his brain, said Dr. Daniele De Luca, who led the research team and is chief of the division of pediatrics and neonatal critical care at Paris-Saclay University Hospitals. The baby, now more than 3 months old, recovered without treatment and is very much improved, almost clinically normal, Dr. De Luca said, adding that the mother, who needed oxygen during the delivery, is healthy.

Dr. De Luca said the virus appeared to have been transmitted through the placenta of the 23-year-old mother.

Since the pandemic began, there have been isolated cases of newborns who have tested positive for the coronavirus, but there has not been enough evidence to rule out the possibility that the infants became infected by the mother after they were born, experts said. A recently published case in Texas, of a newborn who tested positive for Covid-19 and had mild respiratory symptoms, provided more convincing evidence that transmission of the virus during pregnancy can occur.

In the Paris case, Dr. De Luca said, the team was able to test the placenta, amniotic fluid, cord blood, and the mothers and babys blood.

The testing indicated that the virus reaches the placenta and replicates there, Dr. De Luca said. It can then be transmitted to a fetus, which can get infected and have symptoms similar to adult Covid-19 patients.

A study of the case was published on Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications.

Dr. Yoel Sadovsky, executive director of Magee-Womens Research Institute at the University of Pittsburgh, who was not involved in the study, said he thought the claim of placental transmission was fairly convincing. He said the relatively high levels of the coronavirus found in the placenta and the rising levels of virus in the baby and the evidence of placental inflammation, along with the babys symptoms, are all consistent with SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Still, Dr. Sadovsky said, it is important to note that cases of possible coronavirus transmission in utero appear to be extremely rare. With other viruses, including Zika and rubella, placental infection and transmission is much more common, he said. With the coronavirus, he said, we are trying to understand the opposite what underlies the relative protection of the fetus and the placenta?

Another study published on Tuesday in eLife, an online research journal, may help answer that question. It found that while cells in the placenta had many of the receptor proteins that allow viruses to propagate, there was evidence of only negligible amounts of a key cell surface receptor and an enzyme that are known to be involved in allowing the coronavirus to enter cells and replicate. The study was led by Dr. Robert Romero, chief of the perinatology research branch at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

The report from doctors in Paris said that the woman was 35 weeks pregnant when she came to the hospital with a fever and a cough that she developed a couple of days earlier in what was an otherwise healthy pregnancy. She tested positive for the coronavirus. After three days, fetal heart monitoring indicated signs of distress, and the baby was delivered by emergency cesarean section.

The baby was placed in the neonatal intensive care unit and was connected to a ventilator for about six hours, the authors reported. He seemed to be doing well, but on his third day he became irritable, had trouble feeding and was experiencing muscle spasms and rigidity.

A brain scan showed some injury to the white matter, which Dr. De Luca said resembled symptoms of meningitis or inflammation in the brain. He tested negative for other viruses or bacterial infections that could have caused such symptoms, while tests of his blood and fluid from his lungs were positive for coronavirus infection, the authors said. The baby gradually recovered and left the hospital after 18 days.

The authors said that the highest levels of the coronavirus were found in the placenta, higher than those in the amniotic fluid and in the blood of the mother and baby, which Dr. De Luca said suggested that the virus might be able to replicate in placental cells.

Dr. De Luca, who is also the president-elect of the European Society for Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care, said his team was analyzing other suspected cases of placental transmission of the coronavirus.

This will be helpful for clinicians and policymakers in order to manage pregnant women, check neonates and reduce the risk of viral transmission from mothers to neonates, he said, adding, The good news is that the baby recovered spontaneously and gradually despite all this, and this confirms that the disease is milder in early infancy.

Players Will Be Able to Beat Cyberpunk 2077 Without Completing the Main Story – PlayStation LifeStyle

CD Projekt REDs RPGs always center on player-choice. But the studio is apparently upping the ante with Cyberpunk 2077. This time, player-choice will prove so integral that some players may beat the game without actually completing the main questline.

Lead Quest DesignerPawel Sasko confirmed as much and explained the notions inner workings during an interview with Polish publication, Spiders Web. According to Sasko (via VG247), the studio built Cyberpunk 2077s structure based on what was learned from developing The Witcher 3. He explained, The Witcher had the main stem of history and side threads departing from it, and this was our main structure, which we call the ear. So in Cyberpunks structure we have this wheat spike, which serves as its center, the main storyline with different subplots surrounding it, which can be triggered in various ways.

For the first time, CD Projekt is experimenting with subplots further. Most notably, subplot will alter the core games main plot. These changes are drastic, so much so that players can beat Cyberpunk 2077 without first wrapping up the primary storyline. Sasko notes that the chosen lifepath affects every piece of the puzzle. In fact, the lifepath players choose at the start of the game means theyll experience a completely different epilogue than the player with a different lifepath who made different choices, met different characters and formed relationships with them.

Cyberpunk 2077s lifepath system will even alter Vs relationship with Jackie, the companion seen in many a trailer and gameplay video. Going Corpo means V will meet Jackie under a set of circumstances that differ from another player who chooses the Nomad path. Sasko told Spiders Web: This is one example of the fact that depending on the chosen path of originas a character you were born in a different place, you have a different story, and therefore both Jackies story and your relationship with him was different.

In the end, it all comes down to a butterfly affect that affects whole storylines, since some quests are exclusive to certain lifepaths. Thus, one decision made at the start of the game has been structured to impact every facet of the experience. AsSenior Quest Designer Philipp Weber previously teased, such variety is bound to make replay value incredibly high.

CD Projekt RED recently pushed Cyberpunk 2077 out of its September launch date. The sci-fi RPG will now hit stores a little later in the year on November 19th for the PS4, PC, and Xbox One.

Elon Musk Is Now The Fifth Richest Person In The World – Forbes

TOPLINE

Elon Musk's meteoric rise up the Forbes Billionaire List has continued this month, as hes ascended past luminaries such as Warren Buffett and Steve Ballmer. As of Monday afternoon, Musk's net worth surpassed $74 billion, meaning he is now the fifth-richest person on the planet.

Musk, 49, is the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, the electric vehicle company whose stock price has soared since March.

Tesla shares gained another 9.5% in Monday's trading to $1,643.00, giving it a 60% rise in just three weeks since June 29, and a nearly 300% increase in 2020 alone.

Musk was ranked No. 31 on Forbes' Billionaires List as recently as mid-March, with a net worth just under $25 billion.

His fortune has nearly tripled since then, skyrocketing to $74.2 billion at the close of trading Monday, Forbes calculates.

Musk owns 21% of Tesla but has pledged more than half his stake as collateral for loans; Forbes has discounted his stake to take the loans into account.

Musk first debuted on Forbes 400 Wealthiest Americans List in 2012 in 190th place with a net worth of $2.4 billion. On January 1 this year, he was the 37th richest person on earth. However, Tesla's sudden and spectacular rise has propelled him near the very top of the world's wealthiest humans. Tesla's surge has confounded some investors, considering its far smaller than its competitors and only recently began to log quarterly profits. Tesla produced 103,000 vehicles in the first quarter; Toyota produced 2.4 million vehicles during that same period. In 2019, American automakers General Motors and Ford generated ten times more sales than Tesla. Late last month, analysts from Morgan Stanley warned that Tesla stock, which was trading at roughly $1,000 per share at that time, was "grossly overvalued and set to plunge." Earlier this month, Musk said that Tesla would produce virtually fully autonomous self-driving vehicles by the end of 2020, a claim that was met with skepticism by an auto industry accustomed to a heaping of hype from Musk on the capabilities of self-driving technology. Musk has not sold shares of Tesla since 2010.

"I really couldn't care less," Musk emailed Forbes about his net worth earlier this month. "These numbers rise and fall, but what really matters is making great products that people love."

"Moves like we are seeing in Microsoft and Tesla and Amazon are truly insane and unlike any i have ever seen in my life," tweeted analyst Jim Cramer on Monday afternoon. When asked if Tesla was a 'Covid Stock,' Cramer replied, "i don't even know if it is a stock. it is something else entirely, like a new species discovered in the wild."

When Kanye West initially announced that he was running for president, he said he had the "full support" of Musk, a longtime close friend. In a since-deleted tweet, Musk responded, "We may have more differences of opinion than I anticipated." However, Musk later told Page Six, "Kanye explained afterward some of the reasoning behind why he said what he said. It makes more sense than many people, including me, realized." On July Fourth, Musk tweeted, "You have my full support!"

Following Funds From The Twitter Hack & Bitcoin Scam – Affecting Joe Biden, Elon Musk, And Others – Forbes

A massive hack affected Twitter around 3pm EDT Wednesday (July 15th 2020), in which many high-profile accounts were used to tweet out a large-scale doubling scam.

It is unclear exactly how the hackers gained access to make the tweets from these accounts, but Twitter posted an update which corroborated reports that indicated company personnel and internal admin tools were involved.

Considering that the hackers had control over some of the most influential accounts on Twitter, posting a simple Bitcoin scam and exposing their access is a curious choice. As Kris Holt said, It could have been a lot worse - Accounts were frozen quickly, and the main known hacker address only received around $120,000 worth of BTC at the time of writing. Tracking these funds, however small the amount, is important and the FBI is reportedly investigating:

Tracking Funds

Bitcoin is a public blockchain, so anyone can pull and investigate all of the hack-associated transactions and addresses from their own node. Zach Finzi and I use this publicly available blockchain data to model the funds received and subsequently sent by the scammer(s).

Bitcoin Network Topology Visualization Twitter Hack/Cryptoforhealth Scam

The above graph uses the 3d Network Topology App for Splunk SPLK s Machine Learning Tool Kit. It shows the indexed transactions between addresses implicated in the scam. Each node represents an individual address and the edges represent a set of transactions and transfers of BTC between the two nodes. Blue nodes are those linked to the Twitter hack, and blue edges represent transactions between them. Green edges represent funds received by the hacker(s), and orange ones show where they sent their funds.

To better visualize the movement of funds we can use a Sankey diagram:

Sankey Diagram of BTC transactions associated with the Twitter Hack

In the above image, transaction directionality can better be seen (BTC moves from addresses on the left to those on the right). To reduce complexity, not all transactions or addresses are pictured.

Here, we can see that the scammer(s) consolidates funds received by apparent victims, before dispersing them to others. Visualizations like these, in addition to various algorithms, are often used in blockchain forensics to help analysts link address ownership/affiliation.

By aggregating the addresses controlled by the scammer(s) to a single representative wallet, and further limiting the number of transactions displayed (for better viewing), we can see that the addresses which directly received payments have been mostly emptied to a number of other addresses.

The primary address which the scammer collected payments with, and was linked on the cryptoforhealth website, before it was pulled down, can be tracked by anyone here.

Sankey Diagram with Twitter Scam addresses aggregated

The addresses which now hold these funds can further be monitored in an attempt to see if they eventually are transferred to a known entity such as a regulated cryptocurrency exchange or gambling service, and to prevent the spending or laundering of them.

Natural Language Processing of Bitcoin Scam/Hack Events

Due to the high-profile nature of the accounts hit, the large security concerns that come with such an attack are perhaps more important than the missing $120k.

By combining techniques such as keyword detection, topic modeling, sentiment analysis, and named-entity recognition, I analyze natural language data surrounding Bitcoin. The below graphs shows unique document URLs (which are equivalent to unique articles, but also can contain structured text derived from images or videos) which contain the key term Bitcoin (and its aliases, such as BTC) and have topics related to scam, fraud, or hack.

The first image shows a daily count of the number of documents with the above criteria sorted by average term sentiment (that is sentiment in relation to the term Bitcoin). Expectedly, we can see a massive spike on July 15th and 16th.

Bitcoin Scam/Hack timeseries data from June 16th to July 16th 2020

By taking these filtered Bitcoin mentions, and limiting to only events from July 15th and 16th, we can see a highly negative average term sentiment (23.844%, where 0 is highly negative and 100 is highly positive). We also see that our models detect many mentions in these events for the high profile individuals whose accounts were compromised in this Hack:

Bitcoin Scam/Hack data from July 15th to July 16th 2020

Metadata about the information used in below panels (top). Top mentioned person name candidates identified through our neural nets (left). The overall sentiment for the term Bitcoin (right).

Despite the negative attention directed at Bitcoin, the incident does not imply any underlying security concerns for the Bitcoin network itself. In fact, the cryptofinancial ecosystems response to the hack has included spreading awareness of the scam, cooperative investigating of the activity, and reporting of the implicated addresses.

Bitcoinabuse.com, a site for self reporting of fraud-associated addresses, quickly received a number of reports for the scam addresses:

Elon Musks Crew Dragon spaceship will bring Nasa astronauts home next week in historic first ever missi – The Sun

NASA has revealed a tentative date for bringing astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley back to Earth.

The US astronauts made history last month when they were the first to be sent to the International Space Station on a SpaceX spacecraft.

A Nasa and SpaceXFalcon 9 rocket shot two US astronauts into space back in May.

The launch was a historic event because it was the first time a private company launched astronauts into space.

It was also the first time in almost a decade that astronauts blasted off from US soil.

The astronauts piloted their Crew Dragon capsule all the way to the ISS and now Nasa is aiming to have them fall back to Earth in it by August 2.

3

Nasa administrator Jim Bridenstine tweeted: "We're targeting an Aug. 1 departure of @SpaceX's Dragon Endeavour spacecraft from the @Space_Station to bring @AstroBehnken and @Astro_Doug home after their historic #LaunchAmerica mission.

"Splashdown is targeted for Aug. 2. Weather will drive the actual date. Stay tuned."

3

The capsule is intended to splash into the Atlantic ocean after blazing through the atmosphere.

It should undock from the ISS on August 1 and thrust itself back down before re-entry which should see parachutes help it to soften the impact.

The astronauts will then be met by boats in the Atlantic Ocean.

3

This landing has already been tested by an unmanned Dragon Crew capsule that made a safe re-entry last year.

Astronauts Behnken and Hurley have been helping out at the ISS since May 31, changing ageing batteries on space walks and assisting with scientific work.

The current plan is for them to undock from the ISS at 8pm ET on August 1.

This will be midnight in the UK.

However, weather and other factors can affect when astronauts can land back on Earth so this date and time is only provisional.

What is SpaceX?

Here's what you need to know...

SpaceX was founded by billionaire entrepreneurElon Muskwho still has part ownership of the company with 54 per cent equity and 78 per cent voting control.

SpaceX is a private American aerospace manufacturer that is based in California.

It was founded in 2002 with the goal to build affordable rockets and enable the colonisation of Mars.

The manufacturer also aimed to reducespacetransportation costs.

Since its creation, the firm has gained fame primarily as a pioneering rocket firm.

In 2008 it launched the first privately-funded liquid-propellant rocket to reach orbit and later became the first private company to launch an object into orbit around the sun.

The company has grown dramatically over its lifespan, from 160 employees in November 2005 to around 7,000 as of November 2019.

As of March 2018, SpaceX had over 100 launches on its manifest representing about $12billion (9.24billion) in contract revenue.

Twitter hackers who targeted Elon Musk and others received $121,000 in bitcoin, analysis shows – CNBC

On Wednesday, the Twitter accounts of some of the most famous people in the country were compromised as part of an apparent bitcoin scam.

Victims included Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, former President Barack Obama and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Accounts for those people, and others, posted tweets asking followers to send bitcoin to a specific anonymous address.

For their efforts, the scammers received over 400 payments in bitcoin, with a total value of $121,000 at Thursday's exchange rate, according to an analysis of the Bitcoin blockchainperformed by Elliptic, a cryptocurrency compliance firm.

Elliptic co-founder Tom Robinson said it's a low sum for what appears to be a historic hack that Twitter said involved an insider.

"Given the scale of the compromiseI don't think that's very much, but what we often see with these type of exploits is that the exploititself can be very sophisticated but they're not very good at monetizingit," Robinson said.

The scammers posted three separate bitcoin addresses and one address for the cryptocurrency Ripple, which didn't receive any transactions, Robinson said.

The largest transaction received by the scammers was one payment of about $42,000, which could be traced back to a Japanese cryptocurrency exchange, Robinson told CNBC.

CNBC could not verify who sent the bitcoin or if all of the money was proceeds from the scam. It's possible the scammers sent money to their own wallet to make their con look more successful.

Robinson said the people who fell for the racket were "a strange segment."

"It's people who are sophisticated enough to have crypto in the first place because otherwise they probably wouldn't have been able to make the payments in that short period of time, but also not crypto sophisticated enough to recognize the scam," Robinson said.

Shortly after the wallet started receiving funds, it started transferring them to different addresses. Robinson says that the scammers are probably doing this to "cash out." There could be benefits to moving fast before exchanges where cryptocurrency can be traded for cash or other coins block the addresses, he said.

Gemini, a major U.S. exchange, said it blacklisted the affected bitcoin addresses on Wednesday.

The scam tweets posted on Wednesday are similar to past scam tweets asking for bitcoin, with one major difference: The attackers were able to post them from compromised verified accounts with lots of followers.

Elon Musk's Twitter account was the first high-profile account to post a bitcoin tweet. Crypto scammers have targeted Musk in the past by creating dummy accounts that emulate Musk's account name and profile picture. They use those dummy accounts and reply to Tesla or SpaceX tweets asking for bitcoin.

How Oak Trees Evolved to Rule the Forests of the Northern Hemisphere – Scientific American

If you were dropped into virtually any region of North America 56 million years ago, you probably would not recognize where you had landed. Back then, at the dawn of the Eocene epoch, the earth was warmer and wetter than it is today. A sea had just closed up in the middle of the Great Plains, and the Rocky Mountains had not yet attained their full height. The continent's plant and animal communities were dramatically different. In the Canadian High Arctic, which today harbors relatively few tundra plant species, year-round temperatures above freezing nurtured a rich and diverse flora; Ellesmere Island in far northern Canada, across from the northwestern coast of Greenland, was home to alligators and giant tortoises. What is now the southeastern U.S. was dominated by tropical rain forest, complete with primates. The northeastern U.S., for its part, ranged from broad-leaved (as opposed to needle-leaved) evergreen forest to deciduous forests of ginkgo, viburnum, birch and elm, among other species. The deciduous broad-leaved forests that now cover 11 percent of North America north of Mexico were in their infancy. But that was about to change, with the spread and extraordinary diversification of what would eventually become some of the most ecologically and economically significant woody plants in the world: the acorn-bearing, wind-pollinated trees we call oaks.

Over the course of some 56 million years, oaks, which all belong to the genus Quercus, evolved from a single undifferentiated population into the roughly 435 species found today on five continents, ranging from Canada to Colombia and from Norway to Borneo. Oaks are keystone species, foundational to the functioning of the forests they form across the Northern Hemisphere. They foster diversity of organisms across the tree of life, from fungi to wasps, birds and mammals. They help clean the air, sequestering carbon dioxide and absorbing atmospheric pollutants. And they have shaped human culture, feeding us with their acorns and providing wood to build our homes, furniture and ships. Indeed, oaks have proved so valuable to people that we have immortalized them in legends and myths for centuries.

Oaks are especially prominent in the Americas. Approximately 60 percent of all Quercus species live here. This astounding variety, along with the fact that the oaks in this region account for more forest tree biomass than any other woody plant genus in North America and Mexico, makes them the single most important group of trees in the continent's forests. To understand forests, thentheir biodiversity, food webs and contributions to human well-beingone must understand how oaks came to rule them. For decades scientists could only speculate about much of the evolutionary history of oaks because of gaps in their fossil record and limitations of the biomolecular techniques used to infer evolutionary events from the DNA of living organisms. But recent advances in genome sequencing and analysis have allowed us and our colleagues to reconstruct a detailed picture of the origin, diversification and dispersal of oaks. It is a remarkable evolutionary success story, one that will have important implications for predicting how these essential trees will fare in the face of climate changeand for developing management plans to ensure their survival.

The differences between major groups of oaks are readily apparent to even a casual observer. In the Americas, oaks are dominated by two evolutionary lineages that you may already know. One of these, the red oak group, is composed of species with bristle-tipped leaves. In most red oak group species, pollen takes a full year from the time it lands on the female flower to fertilize the seed, so that acornsthe fruits of these treespollinated in one year only ripen in the next. Species in the other major lineage, the white oak group, have no bristles on their leaves, and the leaves generally contain more soil-enriching nutrients when they fall than those of red oaks do. Also, white oak acorns almost all ripen the same year they are pollinated, sometimes germinating before they even fall. Gray squirrels preferentially cache red oak acorns to eat at a later date because they are less likely than white oak acorns to go bad before the squirrels can get back to them.

White oaks are also able to efficiently plug the water-conducting, tubelike cells called vessels in their wood with tyloses, balloonlike structures that seal the vessels as a barrier against deadly fungal diseases such as oak wilt. Red oaks are slower and sloppy in their defense. Consequently, white oaks have long served as wood for ships and wine barrels because the plugged vessels of the white oak species hold water more effectively than those of the red oaks. Chewing insects recognize the differences between red and white oaks, and most are adapted to favor either one or the other of these two groups. Even mycorrhizal fungi, which connect plant roots to soil nutrients, appear to recognize the differences between the two types of oaks: many favor symbiotic relationships with species in one lineage over the other.

When we get to the species level, however, closely related oaks are often difficult to tell apart. The variation within species, the result of both plastic responses of the trees to their environment and genetic variation between individuals, often appears to be as great as the variation between species. And oaks hybridize commonly within their group, be it the white or red lineages or any of the six other major lineages of oaks worldwide. These two factorshigh variation within species and ongoing hybridization between speciescomplicate classification.

Hybridization can also make it difficult to reconstruct the evolutionary history of oaks using traditional biomolecular techniques, which involve sequencing one or a few genes, because individual genes often trace different histories. Moreover, a single oak species may have hybridized with numerous different species, so that different genes record different aspects of this history across the geographical range of the species. The oak genome is thus a mosaic shaped by speciation and hybridization. The sequences of only one or a few genes cannot reveal the full history of speciation in oaks.

Two decades ago researchers had only the sequences of DNA from chloroplaststhe cell organelles that carry out photosynthesisand a few nuclear genes to go on. It was enough to discern the overall branching structure of the oak tree of life, but we could not see the arrangement of its endmost branches. In 2008 the three of us realized that new molecular techniques we were already using to study hybridization and the limits of species in the red oak group might also enable us to infer oak evolutionary history. Since then, we, in collaboration with colleagues around the world, have employed an approach called restriction-site associated DNA sequencing to read short regions of DNA from across the genome. We analyze these data using statistical methods that reconstruct the order in which species have branched from common ancestors and which ones have hybridized since that divergence. By marrying these analyses to fossil data, we can estimate the maximum ages of key events in oak evolutionary history. Despite the complex genetic history of oaks, we have been able to deduce much of the history of speciation in this group going back to the root of the oak tree of life.

We may never know precisely when or where the very first oaks arose, but roughly 56 million years ago a population of oaks growing near what is now Salzburg, Austria, left in the mud a bit of the massive amount of pollen they produced each spring. These pollen grains, which are shaped like a rugby ball with three grooves running lengthwise and with surface textures that vary by lineage, are the earliest unambiguous fossil evidence of oaks on record. Throughout the early Eocene, land bridges spanning the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans connected North America and Eurasia. Plants and animals freely crossed between the two continents. Oaks were most likely part of a vast forest that spread across the continents of North America, Europe and Asia. This makes it difficult to say with any confidence whether oaks originated in Eurasia and sent a branch off to the Americas, or vice versa. The better answer to where modern oaks arose may simply be in the north.

In any case, remarkably soon after they arose, oaks started to separate into two major branches: one limited to Europe, Asia and North Africa and the other largely limited to the Americas. The separation between continents was imperfect at first. For example, the oldest fossil attributable to the ring-cupped oaks, based on the concentric rings formed by the woody scales on its acorn cap, was deposited in Oregon around 48 million years ago. Today this lineage is restricted to Southeast Asia. And red oaks, which today are an American group, have been reported from fossil sites in Europe dating to some 35 million years ago. But when global temperatures started their long descent about 52 million years ago, oaks were gradually pushed southward, away from the land bridges that have connected Eurasia and North America intermittently over the past 50 million years. As cooling drove northern oak populations extinct, the divisions between the two continents became very clean, with no species from the Eurasian clade showing up in the Americas and only two branches of the American clade showing up in Eurasia.

Before they could be pushed too far to the south, oaks were further subdivided into the eight major lineages we recognize in modern forests. Three of them are restricted to the Americas: the red, golden cup and southern live oaks. One lineage, that of the white oaks, originated and diversified in the Americas but sent an offshoot back to Eurasia. We know these major lineages arose early in oak evolution because one of the oldest American oak fossils is a 45-million-year-old white oak from Axel Heiberg Island in Nunavut, Canada, that can be distinguished from the red oaks and all other major lineages of oaks. But fossils from this initial phase of diversification are hard to assign to any one lineage, so we rely on molecular data to estimate when the other oaks separated into independent lineages. The integration of molecular data with selected fossils indicates that the world's eight lineages split early on. It is an important part of the story because it explains what happened next as the North American oaks underwent their own burst of diversification.

As temperatures cooled worldwide, the North American climate also became more seasonal. The Rocky Mountains were continuing to rise, and their rain shadow dried out the Great Plains. The tropical forests and broad-leaved evergreen forests that had flourished across North America were gradually restricted in range and driven to extinction by around 40 million years ago. Oak pollen and leaf impressions became more common in the North American fossil record 35 million years ago, by which time decreased temperatures and increased seasonality had converted North America north of Mexico from a mostly tropical to a mostly temperate continental landscape. As climate change extirpated tropical forests from North America, ecological opportunity arose for the oaks.

The red and white oaks moved south into this newly opened territory, each splitting into a lineage on the western side of the Rocky Mountains that gave rise to the modern-day oaks of California and the Pacific Northwest and into a lineage on the eastern side of the Rockies that gave rise to the oaks of eastern North America. Within the latter region, each of these major oak groups subdivided into a predominantly northeastern lineage, a predominantly southeastern lineage and a primarily Texan lineage. From eastern North America, perhaps by way of Texas, the red and white oaks then moved into Mexico between 10 million and 20 million years ago.

In all these areas, palms and broad-leaved evergreen trees had been pushed south or driven partially or wholly extinct by the cooling and increasingly fluctuating climate. The resulting abundance of open habitat enabled oaks to diversify. Increased ecological opportunity allowed oaks to undergo an adaptive radiation, in which nascent species rapidly fill spaces that other species are not occupying. In doing so, these young populations became more ecologically distinct from one another, thereby limiting the movement of genes between them. They became reproductively isolated, so that genes moved less between separated populations than among trees within populations. Subsequently, new genetic mutations and rearrangements could accumulate that distinguished the populations from one another. Through this process, they became new species.

This adaptive radiation played out most dramatically in Mexico and Central America, where about 40 percent of all the world's oaks reside. Recall that oaks were a largely cold-adapted lineage that spread across the continent as temperatures dropped and seasonality increased. As they migrated south into Mexico, oaks climbed to higher elevations that more closely resembled the temperate biome in which they had evolved, and they encountered high topographic variation that readily separated them into reproductively isolated populations. Oaks also evolved more rapidly along the continuum from low water availability to high water availability as they moved into Mexico. Tacking up and down the mountains, different populations adapted to different levels of drought. This ecological differentiation most likely worked hand in hand with increased physical separation to promote reproductive isolation between populations.

Thus, the reason for the high oak diversity in Mexico appears not to be warmer temperatures. And because Mexican oaks are relatively young, their high diversity has not accrued over comparatively long periods of evolutionary time. Rather adaptive radiation led to higher speciation rates in these evolutionarily young Mexican oaks as they moved into the mountains. This change suggests that if oaks had been suited to climb into the Rockies and flourish therethat is, if they could have survived the combination of short growing seasons and cold winters of the northern mountainsthey might have developed high diversity in this region as well. Their evolutionary heritage simply did not equip them for these extremely harsh environments. Only a lone white oak species, the Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii), even comes close, and that species is limited to the southern Rockies.

The oaks were finally stopped in their march southward, perhaps by dramatic reduction in seasonality or strong competition from tropical forest species, only barely making it across the Isthmus of Panama into the north of South America. Yet this is not the whole story. The oaks' southward journey actually played out twice, simultaneously and in the same places. Because white and red oaks had already separated from each other by the time they started moving south, this diversification history happened in parallel in both the red and white oaks. Two distinct but very closely related lineages, not one, traced the biogeographical history we just described: moving south, splitting around the Rocky Mountains, heading into Mexico from an eastern North American ancestor. This history may explain part of the species richness and abundance of oaks in the Americas. They essentially double-dipped as they ventured south.

One of the most exciting areas of our research has been the integration of a genome-level understanding of the oak tree of life with physiological studies of oak adaptation to climate and habitat and community studies of oak forest structure. As oaks spread south and diversified in different regions, the white and the red oaks encountered similar habitats and repeatedly solved the same ecological problems in novel ways. As a result, we often find red and white oaks growing together in the same habitats. For example, on poor rocky soils and bluffs in the eastern U.S., you can find the white oak Quercus stellata, also known as the post oak, growing next to the red oak Quercus marilandica, commonly called the blackjack oak. In the mountains of southern Arizona, the iconic white oak Quercus arizonica often grows beside the red oak Quercus emoryi.

This pattern of oak co-occurrence is found in wooded plant communities across much of the country, and it has another intriguing feature. Whereas distantly related oaks tend to grow together, closely related oaks within lineages tend not to be found together. Along an elevational gradient in the Chiricahua Mountains of southern Arizona, for example, white oak species pass the baton as you walk upslope, transitioning broadly from one to the next as you hike uphill, and red oak species do as well. In the lowlands of Florida, white oak species separate across the sandhill, scrub and ravine habitats shaped by karst topography and fire. Red oaks do the same.

What shapes this pattern of oak co-occurrence? Ecological differentiation within the red and white oaks is influenced in part by the fact that no single species is able to master every habitat. Instead species tend to specialize on a limited part of the available ecological space. In oaks, physiological trade-offs within each lineage subdivide habitat and climatic space so that close relatives are less likely to co-occur. In the Chiricahua Mountains, for instance, drought adaptation separates close relatives along the elevation gradient. Species living near the bottom of the mountain are particularly good at avoiding drought, dropping their leaves during dry seasons. Species living at higher elevation, where there is more overall moisture, focus on surviving daily fluctuations in water availability by allowing leaf water content to drop lower before they suffer damage.

In contrast, in Florida, which is comparatively flat, soil moisture availability and fire intensity structure oak communities. Closely related species in these communities show trade-offs between growth rate and drought tolerance along moisture gradients and between bark thickness and the ability to reproduce via underground stems along gradients of fire intensity. In both regions, and indeed across the country, parallel trade-offs are found in both red and white oaks, and trees with convergent traits from the two lineages tend to grow together.

Members of different lineages may co-exist well with one another in each habitat because they differ in their susceptibility to disease: proximity to a more distantly related neighbor may be less likely to result in an epidemic because red and white oaks tend not to spread the same diseases. There is even evidence that oaks help one another get established and persist by creating a soil environment that benefits the mycorrhizal fungi they need to acquire nutrients. Then, once a forest has become established, oaks become dominant and prevent other kinds of trees from setting up shop. Our work makes clear that the evolutionary origins of oaks shape the complex ecological interactions that help to explain why the trees are so abundant and diverse in North America. The tree of life casts its shadow across the structure of our oak forests.

Now that we can delineate the branching history of the oak tree of life in some detail, the trees' propensity to hybridize has become all the more interesting. People often think of hybridization as a destructive force, eroding genetic differences between species. Yet oaks form what is called a syngameon, in which ecologically and physically distinctive species persist in spite of ongoing gene flow. It has long been hypothesized that genes migrating between species of the syngameon might help oaks adapt to novel environments. Could, for example, genes that contribute to drought adaptation in the post oak migrate into the bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa) in the southern regions, where they co-occur, and help the bur oak adapt to the drying conditions it is expected to encounter under global warming? We know already that there is localized gene flow between oak species and that species differ in what genes they exchange depending on where on the landscape they are, what species they co-occur with, and the climate and habitat in which the trees are growing. We also know that after genes move from one species into the other, they can move beyond the range of the species in which they arose, apparently propelled by environmental selection. These examples suggest that adaptive gene flow may play an important role in oak evolution. We are on the cusp of the integrative genomic and ecological studies needed to understand this process in depth.

We would still like to know what genes and attributesflowering time, habitat preference, geographical distancedrive speciation in oaks and whether ecological differences evolve while populations are growing together or only when they are separated. We are close to understanding what genes shape differentiation. Recent work in European oaks shows that genes influencing both their ability to cross-pollinate and their ecological preferences (for instance, tolerance of drought, cold and disease) are involved in species differentiation. Yet these findings only tell us that ecological differences evolve in species, not that they drive species differences. Statistical analyses that simulate alternative speciation histories suggest that in a group of four widespread European white oaks that hybridize today, the genomic differences between the species arose when the species were born in different geographical areas, with opportunities for gene flow arising only after the fully formed species migrated back into contact with each other. Still, the high degree of species co-occurrence in the American oaks raises the question of whether hybridization contributed to their diversity.

A firm grasp of when, where and how oaks came to be so diverse is crucial to understanding how oaks will resist and adapt to rapidly changing environments. Oaks migrated rapidly as continental glaciers receded starting around 20,000 years ago, and hybridization between species appears to have been key to their rapid response. The insights we can gain from elucidating the adaptive benefits of gene flow are critical to predicting how resilient oaks may be as climate change exposes them to fungal and insect diseases with which they did not evolve. As insects that transport pathogenic fungi increase their ranges and change their patterns of reproduction with earlier springs, oaks may have trouble holding their ground unless they can evolve quickly enough to resist diseases they have never before encountered. Our challenge for the coming decade as plant biodiversity scientists will be to figure out how differentiation between species and movement of genes between those species will influence the trajectory of oak evolution and population persistence. If we understand these processes well enough, we stand a chance of using that knowledge to predict what our forests will look like a century or more from now. Perhaps it can guide our plans to manage longer-term survival of the vital oaks.

Malaria: HKUMed and Institut Pasteur collaborate to use an evolution in a test tube approach to develop new molecules for diagnosis – Outbreak News…

The LKS Faculty of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed) has collaborated with Institut Pasteur, Paris, to develop an approach to evolve molecules which are entirely alien to biology. The researchers have demonstrated the approach by evolving molecules which stick to a malaria biomarker. Critically, these special non-biological molecules are able to carry out tasks which normal biological molecules are intrinsically unable to do. These molecules can, for example, be used to determine the type of malaria with which a patient is infected. The research has just been published inProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS), a top journal in the field of multidisciplinary science.

One of the lead researchers of the study, Professor Julian Tanner, Professor and Associate Director (Teaching & Learning) of the School of Biomedical Sciences, Assistant Dean (Biomedical Sciences Curriculum), HKUMed, remarked, Evolution is a powerful idea that is at the centre of all of biology. This study harnesses the evolutionary idea of natural selection, but then applies it outside of the biological context, thus creating an evolution in a test tube approach. One can then use evolution instead of design to develop molecules which can solve challenges in diagnostics and therapeutics. If we can extend evolution well beyond the usual confines of biological molecules such as DNA and protein, then we can open an entire new toolbox which can transform medicine.

Background

Evolution is understood in biology as the process by which characteristics of organisms are inherited over successive generations under particular selective pressures. Evolution is guided by chance some members of a population are able to outcompete others which over time define the physical characteristics and behaviour of a species.

It is also possible to apply evolutionary selections to populations of molecules. In a similar fashion, molecules can be made to compete with each other for a particular characteristic. For example, this characteristic might be sticking to specific molecular markers which only exist in the presence of a disease. Such evolved molecules could then be used in diagnosing or treating a disease. This has previously been demonstrated for common biological molecules including DNA and proteins. However, it has always been a challenge to extend the idea of molecular evolution much beyond common biological molecules.

Study ResultsThe major challenge the team faced was how to develop an approach to allow point-of-care diagnosis of malaria that could distinguish when a patient is infected withPlasmodium falciparumparasites orPlasmodium vivaxparasites. This is important as the two parasite species cause malaria with different outcomes and typically require different drug treatments. However, the point-of-care approaches which had previously been developed for malaria diagnosis typically were only able to determine whether a patient had malaria, but were unable to distinguish which parasite had caused the malaria.

To solve this challenge, the team developed and applied an entirely new approach where unusual cube chemistries, called cubanes, are included into DNA, and integrated into an evolution in a test tube approach. Cubanes are never observed in biology, and hence this is a rare example of applying evolutionary principles to an entirely non-biological system. The research team discovered new types of DNA incorporating these unusual cubane chemistries which perfectly fit the binding pocket of a malaria biomarker which specifically indicatePlasmodium vivaxmalaria infection.

Brief Overview on Data Modeling Software

Data modeling is the method of applying techniques and methods according to the requirements of data so as to convert it in a useful form. Data modeling software helps in making a data model for any information system by applying a certain set of formal techniques. The software helps in the process of converting complex designs into an understandable, simple and easy diagram with the flow of data. In other words, in order to store data in a database, it needs to be converted into a particular form i.e. a data model is required and created for this purpose. Thus data modeling software permits drawing diagrams because it is easy for connecting and understanding data in a diagrammatical manner. Data modeling software is used in practice in many areas such as in business process modeling that usually deals with larger business processes and also the decision making the flow of the hierarchy of the entire organization.

Global Non-Slip Rubber Mats Market Predicted to Witness Sustainable Evolution in Years to Come - 3rd Watch News

‘Palm Springs’ brings notion of repeated reality to life – The Daily Cardinal

As our COVID-riddled state rolls back openings and braces for whatever the months ahead hold, these past few weeks of Summer: Live from Wisconsin Quarantine! have started to feel like theyre simply repeating the same events every single day. Over and over and over again.

Hulus Palm Springs takes that notion literally and somehow makes us want to stick around.

In the largest Sundance Film Festival sale ever made, Palm Springs tells the story of family black sheep Sarah, an unlucky maid of honor who awakens on the morning of November 9 the day of her sisters wedding and prepares for whatever the fateful day entails. Played to the absolute piping brim of her Im a disappointment glory by How I Met Your Mother titular actress Cristin Milioti, Sarah quickly draws the attention of wedding guest and surprising toast giver Nyles, portrayed by Lonely Island and Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg, becoming smitten with his seemingly uncanny ability to predict everything exactly the way it will happen before it even happens.

The meet-cute between both parties ensues, the preparations for a night of romance abound before suddenly, all hell suddenly breaks loose. Nyles is struck by an arrow from a homicidal maniac, Sarah follows him towards a glowing cave, and before we know it, she wakes up in the same bed on November 9, all over again.

Unbeknownst to Sarah, Nyles has led her into a time loop, one in which hes been stuck for so long he stopped counting the days, and provides her the rules for how the new world operates. From a series of lackluster suicide attempts to a bucket list of crazy activities, the pair is forced to navigate whatever can be found in this new world for only the both of them, quickly recognizing theres no escaping their inevitable reset or budding romance along the way.

The beauty of Palm Springs doesnt lie in the formula a pattern weve seen perfectly patented through the 1993 classic Groundhog Day and more recently updated in films like Blumhouses Happy Death Day and television series like Netflixs Russian Doll.

Nyles isnt trying to convince other people that hes trapped like Phil Conners (Bill Murray) does, and theres no redeeming quality that has to be found inside either character before they can escape. Rather, its the unique blend of the formula we see here part and parcel existential comedy about the nothingness of repeating the same day and padding provided through will they or wont they romantic comedy tropes that works perfectly to let both characters recognize what theyve found in each other, saving the movie and preventing it from being a bad version of both. It causes viewers to ponder whether or not we would be content repeating the same day if it meant we got to spend it with someone we came to love, and once the twist comes youll be shocked to discover why Sarah feels the need to escape the cycle for good.

While the twists and turns of the narrative keep the engine moving, the performances on both sides make the on-screen romance far better than one couldve ever hoped. Samberg adopting more of a frat boy persona over his typical parody schtick brings a perfect level of hysterical hopelessness into the time loop situation, dialing up his chops for the moments of insanity and tapping into some more serious emotions once he recognizes the feelings hes developed for Sarah.

Had I not watched Lonely Island videos thousands of times in middle school much to the disappointment of my teachers and peers I wouldve never guessed he had the ability to change directions. Not to mention his chemistry with Milioti who brings her own manic energy to the screen and Sambergs performance propels the storyline far beyond anything a lower-tier comedian might have provided towards the role. Im excited to see him continue to tackle more projects like this as Nine Nine seemingly comes to a conclusion within the next few years and he hopefully lines himself up for the potential of a late-career Adam Sandler route for adult romantic comedies or just a few more Lonely Island videos, I would be fine with that.

Many of the supporting performances, from television legends like Peter Gallagher and teen stars like Camila Mendes, warrant some attention in Springs. They make or break a high-concept oftentimes, and while the starring pair does a great job keeping fans involved no one provides a fastball quite like Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons in roughly 8-10 minutes of screen time. Coming down from the clouds, and the occasional Travelers Insurance commercial, to play a wedding guest named Roy who develops a strange obsession, well call it with Nyles, Simmons adds yet another eccentric character to his lengthy resume as a supporting comedy player. He perfectly flips the switch between smarmy and sarcastic during the wedding scenes and genuinely warm hearted with his suburban family towards the end of the film, and it consistently blows my mind how frequently he finds new ways to deliver. Any role he takes could fall anywhere between Tom Hanks and a creepier version of Bryan Cranston making his performance in Springs one of the most surprising and enjoyable parts of the entire movie.

All in all, Palm Springs needs to be watched with as few spoilers and as open of a mind as humanly possible letting you sink your teeth into the concept and really imagining how you would really feel living the same day over and over again. Dont look up spoilers, dont deep dive quantum physics on YouTube and suspend disbelief for just a few or 90 moments and you might just find your new favorite comedy movie of the summer and rest of the year.

You can find Palm Springs streaming on Hulu right now.
