Even though theres no cure for psoriatic arthritis (PsA), relief for your symptoms is likely just around the metaphorical cornerthe research into treating this inflammatory condition is moving that fast. Drug therapies for PsA are more targeted than ever, and lifestyle changes can make big improvements in your condition. Once youve been diagnosed with PsA, your primary care doctor will likely refer you to a rheumatologist to discuss your treatment options. Lets take a closer look at what those might entail.

Driven by an out-of-whack inflammatory response, psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a chronic condition where your joints, ligaments, and tendons come under attack by your immune system, leading to pain, swelling, and stiffness that can do serious joint damage if left unchecked.

The disease is related to (but different from) the inflammatory skin condition known as psoriasisalthough about 30% of people with psoriasis will develop PsA at some point during their life, most commonly in their 30s and 40s.

While the jury is still out on the exact causes of PsA, experts believe it is a combination of genetics (about 40% of people with PsA have a family history of the disease), an overactive immune system, and things in the environment that you have been exposed to. It affects men and women in equal numbers and is most frequently diagnosed in people between the ages of 30 and 50.

When it comes to PsA treatment, one size doesnt fit all. Before deciding which approach is right for you, your doctor will do a physical exam and ask you questions to figure out how much (or little) PsA is getting in the way of your everyday activities.

Severe cases can cause long-term joint damage, while milder cases are more of an inconvenience, so its important to establish the degree to which PsA is affecting your personal situation first, before talking about treatment.

The goal of the treatment is simple: Reduce inflammation and the discomfort that you may be feeling so you can return to enjoying your life. The sooner treatment begins, the more successful it tends to be at easing symptoms and slowing down the disease. These are a few of the approaches you and your doc may discuss.

Uncontrolled inflammation is the underlying cause of most of the discomfort associated with psoriatic arthritis. How severe your inflammation is will often determine which treatment your doctor will chooseor at least, which therapy you start with. Fortunately, there are many effective medications available. You may find that you need to try several in combination to get the best results.

NSAIDs are usually the first step if your symptoms are very mild. They can help control the inflammation and joint pain. Some people feel relief almost immediately, while in others it may take several days. These drugs are not recommended for long-term use since they carry side effects like stomach irritation, heart problems, and kidney damage.

The most common NSAIDs include:

In addition, COX-2 inhibitors, a subclass of NSAIDs, may be prescribed. These have a lower risk of internal bleeding or stomach ulcersa common side effect of other NSAIDs that are used in large doses for a long time. Brand names include Bextra and Celebrex (celecoxib).

Also known as biologic response modifiers, these medications hold much promise for the future of PsA treatments: Up to 60% of PsA patients achieved minimal disease activity after one year of treatment with biologics, according to a study in Arthritis Research & Therapy. These therapies have fewer side effects than DMARDs (although your risk of infection is greater).

Heres how they work: Biologics are protein-based drugs derived from living cells cultured in a laboratory. Their job is to control certain parts of the immune system by targeting the proteins that fuel inflammation and shutting them down. They are categorized based on the cells they target.

These are a few options your doctor may prescribe:

This class of drugs is now the first line of prescription treatment for people with PsA, according to guidelines issued in 2018 by the National Psoriasis Society and the American College of Rheumatology. These meds lower inflammation and slow the progression of PsA by targeting an inflammation-causing substance in the body called tumor necrosis factor (TNF).

Delivered by self-injection or IV, examples of TNF inhibitors include:

Another type of biologic treatment that has been found to be effective in treating PsA, these drugs act on a different pathway to control inflammation in your joints. Like TNF inhibitors, these meds are only available via infusion or injection.

Examples include:

A type of white blood cell related to your immune system, T-cells signal to your body that its under attack and time to launch an assault. Unfortunately, that assault, by way of inflammation, is mistakenly directed at your joints and tendons.

This class of medication inhibits T-cells from becoming activated, thereby reducing inflammation and subsequent joint damage. Its taken as an injection. Examples include Orencia (abatacept).

These drugs work by blocking an enzyme called phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4), that is responsible for controlling inflammatory actions within the bodys cells. Currently there is only one PDE4 inhibitor approved for PsA. This drugOtezla (apremilast)can be taken orally.

Consider corticosteroids a short-term fix for symptoms while youre waiting for other longer-term medications to take effect. (They can also be prescribed for immediate relief during a flare.) Corticosteroids can be taken orally, intravenously, or injected right into the joint.

Long-term use should be avoided since it can lead to side effects like high blood sugar, high blood pressure, bone loss, and glaucoma. Patients coming off the drug should taper slowly over a few weeks. The most common corticosteroid is Deltasone (prednisone).

Surgery is not a standard treatment for those with PsA. However, if youve lived with psoriatic disease without a diagnosis or treatment, it is possible that it has caused permanent joint damage, in which case, your doctor may talk with you about arthoplastya procedure that replaces, reshapes, or reconstructs damaged joints.

Its a serious surgery, but also a common one: More than a million joint replacement procedures are performed each year, mostly of the hip or knee (your shoulders, elbows, and joints in the hands and feet can be replaced as well). There are pros and cons to going this routeand its usually reserved for the most severe cases of joint damage. Talk with your doctor if its something you think might help.

Along with medical procedures and drug intervention, there are a bunch of lifestyle changes you can make that will go a long way towards easing the painful symptoms of psoriatic arthritis. This list here can help you get started.

Drink less alcohol. Heavy drinking can lower your response to PsA treatment. Unchecked alcohol consumption will also fill you up with a glut of empty calories, leading to unwanted pounds that place extra stress on your joints.

Exercise more. Exercising regularly can help psoriatic arthritis in several ways: It reduces joint pain by keeping muscles strong and supporting the joints; it helps you lose or maintain a healthy weight so there is less load on your joints and ligaments; and it can improve your mood and reduce stress. If you are having a flare, you will need to listen to your body. Dont be afraid to back off or take more frequent breaks as you work out. After all, any amount of exercise is better than none.

Explore hot/cold therapy. A warm shower or bath can work wonders on stiff, painful joints. Heat reduces muscle tension and stimulates blood circulation, which may help joints feel better. (Heat can also irritate your skin and cause a flare, so its a tricky balance.) A cold compress, on the other hand, may help reduce inflammation, swelling, and soreness during a flare or after more than your usual amount of activity.

Manage stress. The bottom line: Stress can trigger a flare. Try exercise, meditation, yoga, or deep breathing if tension is making your symptoms worse. And if anxiety or depression is interfering with your life or ability to function, dont hesitate to seek help.

Quit smoking. Smoking can increase your risk of psoriasis and may make symptoms significantly worse. It can also prevent your treatment for working effectively. While the exact causes are unknown, one theory is that cigarettes contain thousands of different ingredients that may promote inflammation.

Sleep better. Sleep is incredibly important for everyone, but if you have psoriatic arthritis, it's especially key because a major part of joint and tissue repair happens when you are asleep. Unfortunately, pain related to PsA can interrupt sleep and so can certain medications like steroids. If youre struggling to get a steady seven to nine hours a night, talk with your doctor about possible solutions.

Use topical creams. Applying creams or lotions containing capsaicin (an extract from chili peppers) may temporarily soothe minor joint pain. Ditto for those with camphor, menthol, or turpentine oil.

Watch your diet. While a direct correlation between diet and psoriatic arthritis has yet to be proven, avoiding foods known to trigger inflammation in the body is sort of a no-brainer. Desserts, soda, white bread, and other foods that are high on the glycemic index tend to cause a temporary spike in blood sugar, which promotes inflammation.

Wear supportive shoes. Sorry to say it, but your days of flip flops and cheap shoes may be behind you. Shoes that provide stability and cushioning can help your feet feel better and provide a solid foundation for your knees, hips, back, and neck. Do what you need to stay comfortable and supported. You may find that changing shoes several times a day is preferable.

There isnt a ton of research to say conclusively one way or the other, but theres little downside to adding these two natural supplements into your diet.

A few studies suggest that supplementation of about 3.3 grams daily of fish oil, which contains high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, may help reduce pain and stiffness. Salmon, walnuts, and flax seed are also sources of omega-3s. Dont overdo though: High doses of omega-3 supplements can cause nausea, cramps, and increase bleeding risks in people who take blood thinners. As always, talk with your doc first.

Turmeric has been used as a spice for centuries. Several small studies show that turmeric and its major ingredient (curcumin) may help treat arthritis symptoms just as effectively as pain medicines like ibuprofen. You can find it as a supplement and can also use it to cook with or add to your tea or smoothies.

All of these options may sound overwhelming to you. Its hard to know where to startwhich is why the best thing you can do is make a list of questions and schedule an appointment with your doctor. As you talk, keep your mind focused on the fact that with the right treatment, the majority of those living with PsA get their symptoms under control and achieve remission. In fact, with certain treatment programs, more than half of patients see symptoms virtually disappear in a years time. Pretty good!

Of course, the trick is finding the right combination of meds, and that can be a bit of trial and error. Dont give up. It can take months, but once you settle of a combo that works for you, youll be well on your way to getting your life back the way you want it. Most likely, youll need to stay on the meds indefinitely, since even though the disease may quiet down, its there, waiting to strike if given half a chance. Still, thats a small price to pay for pain-free living.

Thats a doctor who is specially trained in diagnosing and treating PsA and other rheumatic diseases (musculoskeletal diseases and systemic autoimmune disorders). To see one, you may need a referral, either from your primary care doc or another physician.

Nope, sorry. PsA is not yet curable. If you are taking medication and your symptoms improve, do not stop taking your medications without talking to your doctor. Discontinuing your medications could cause your symptoms to return and even get worse.

PsA treatment varies as does the time it takes to see results. For example, you may get immediate relief from a cortisone injection, but it may take months for a biologic medication to work effectively.

There are an estimated 8 million people in the United States living with psoriasis, a chronic condition that results in painful skin lesionsraised, scaly patches called plaques, boils (known as pustules), or areas of redness and swelling. For affected folks, the threat of a flare-up is always lurking, constantly shaking their confidence in social situations, at school, or at work. That's tough enough to deal with when you can hide within the walls of your cubicle. But what do you do when your "office" is the squared circle?

Growing up in Rochester, New York, Dewey Murray had a singular career goal: wrestle in the WWE. A psoriasis diagnosis at the age of 13 did nothing to derail that dream. At 15, he graduated from a local wrestling academy. By 18, he was building his name on the indie wrestling circuit.

Though the storylines and match results were choreographed, the stunts still carried massive risks. For Murray, the opportunity to conquer the fear of those high-flying physical feats was one of the best features of his job. He could get past putting himself at great risk of injury (or worse). Hell, he embraced it. But when it came to the fear of an in-ring skin flare-up that would bring judgementfrom his fellow wrestlers, the thousands in attendance, and millions watching at homethat anxiety was almost too much.

This is not your average day job. Youre in physical contact with your coworkers.

At just 23 years old and having booked his first gig with the WWE, what should have been a dream come true was rapidly devolving into a nightmare scenario. Murray's big-league debut would require him to have his head shaved in an arena filled with 14,000 screaming wrestling fans, for a segment broadcast live on TV. This should have been his career-launching moment, but all Murray could think about was how his psoriasis might blow the whole thing.

How bad were his plaques? Would the camera be close enough to show them? What would his head look like shaved? What if he bled? What about the guys wielding the electric razor? They were wrestlers, not professional barbers. As the unanswerable questions mounted and Murray imagined the many ways things could go wrong, he was filled with dread.

So much goes through your head because its on live TV and theres no redo, no Hey I have this spot showing, lets hit makeup and run back out and redo it, says Murray, now 32. Im not one to be honest about my anxiety, but that was by far the most stressful day with having psoriasis.

Today, Murray looks back on that day as one of his happiest in wrestling. The spot went well, the few patches he had on his scalp weren't visible on TV, and afterward when he visited a stylist, she didn't mention anything while cutting his hair.

Still, Murray's psoriasis affected his confidence on the job. Other wrestlers knew about Murray's condition; some refused to get in the ring with him, even though it isnt contagious. Mostly, he worried about the crowd finding out. Its one thing when you can go to work every day and dress in a way that hides your skin condition, but as a wrestler you arent able to do that, he says.

About a year after the head-shaving stunt, to control what the crowd saw, Murray developed a trucker persona that allowed him to dress in layers from head to toe, so fans would be none the wiser. He wore jeans with a big flannel shirt and wrapped bandanas around his elbows to hide flare-ups. When the bandanas proved popular with fans, Murray sold them at merch tables. Theres always a positive with the negative, he likes to say.

Murray's trucker persona did the trick. Since 2011, he's had steady work for the likes of Ring of Honor, Total Nonstop Action, and more appearances with WWE; in 2015, he even cracked the world top-500 rankings in Pro Wrestling Illustrated. But while his career continued, keeping his skin condition under wraps took a psychological toll.

At one particular match, Murrays opponentsomeone he had idolized over the yearswas late to arrive, so they didnt have a chance to meet beforehand. After the match was over, Murray sought him out to formally introduce himself. As he extended his hand, the wrestler told him, Im not going to shake your herpes hand.

This is not your average day jobHey Susan, hows it going?this is wrestling. Youre in physical contact with your coworkers, Murray says. When that happened, I didnt know whether to hit him or cry.

Everyone knows that the quantum world can transform communication technology. Quantum technology offers the potential of impenetrable security and unparalleled performance, and is taking its initial steps towards the decisive goal of applications such asextremely encrypted yet virtually fast-as-light financial transactions.

But the potential for quantum computers to interact with each other has been restricted by the resources needed for such kinds of exchanges. This has consequently limited the proportion of data that can be traded, and also the amount of time it can be preserved.

Now, Japan-based researchers have taken a significant step toward dealing with such limitations in resources. The team has published its findings in the Physical Review Letters journal on May 27th, 2020.

To connect remote quantum computers together, we need the capacity to perform quantum mechanical operations between them over very long distances, all while maintaining their important quantum coherence.

Nemoto continued, However, interestingly, while quantum computers have emerged at the small scale, quantum communication technology is still at the device level and has not been integrated together to realize communication systems. In this work, we show a route forward.

Quantum data needs to be protected from the considerable level of noise surrounding it, and data is also likely to be lost from the preliminary message. Such a protection process is referred to as quantum error correction, which intertwines a single piece of data over several qubits. Qubits happen to be the most fundamental unit of quantum data.

Individuals can envision a letter shredded into nine pieces, with each piece placed inside an envelope and each envelope delivered to the same kind of destination to be again organized and read.

Similarly, in the quantum realm, the envelopes are sent through photons and each envelope contains a sufficient amount of data to reproduce the whole letter if any of the delivered envelopes are damaged or lost.

The overhead to protect quantum information from noise and loss will be large, and the size of the required devices to realize this will cause serious problems, as we have started to see in today's quantum computer development. As the efforts to realize the quantum internet are occurring worldwide, it is important to think of it as a system, and not simple devices.

Along with her research team, Nemoto tackled this problem by employing a procedure known as quantum multiplexing, where they decreased the noise and also the number of resources required to relay the data.

In multiplexing, the data stored inside a pair of individual photons is integrated into a single photon, similar to a couple of envelopes being delivered in a portfolio, and therefore, the data is still protected individually but only a single stamp is required to transmit the information.

In this system, quantum error correction will play an essential role, not only of protecting the quantum information transmitted, but also for significantly reducing the necessary resources to achieve whatever tasks one needs. Quantum multiplexing enables significant resource reduction without requiring new technology to be developed for such quantum communication devices.

At present, the scientists are extending their study to large-scale quantum complex network situations.

The quantum revolution has allowed us to design and create new technologies previously thought impossible in our classical world, added Nemoto. Small-scale quantum computers have already shown computing performance better than todays largest supercomputers.

However, many other forms of quantum technology are emerging and one of the most profound could be the quantum internet a quantum-enabled version of todays internetwhich will allow us to network devices together, including quantum computers, Nemoto further stated.

The scientists will next build on the initial steps that they have already adopted to boost the amount of data as well as the storage time.

The study was partly funded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and the John Templeton Foundation.

Bruce Lee, the martial arts icon, was being interviewed by a Hong Kong talk show host when the man asked Lee if he saw himself as Chinese or an American.

Neither, Lee said. I think of myself as a human being.

Forty-three years after his sudden death in July of 1973, more people are starting to think of Lee as something else: A profound thinker whose mind was as supple as his body.

That may seem like an odd claim. Lee was a fighter, not a philosopher, according to popular perception. He left behind some of the most exhilarating fight scenes ever captured on film in movies such as Enter the Dragon and The Chinese Connection.

But his legacy also includes a revolutionary book on the martial arts and Eastern philosophy, and seven volumes of writings on everything from Taoism, quantum physics, psychotherapy and the power of positive thinking.

John Little, who examined Lees papers after the actors death, says he was stunned when he first entered Lees library. He had at least 1,700 heavily annotated books. Thats when he realized that Lee sharpened his mind as much as his body.

The philosophy of Lee is more powerful than the martial arts of Lee, says Little, author of The Warrior Within: The Philosophies of Bruce Lee. Everything that Bruce Lee did flowed from his mind and his thinking.

And it flowed from his pride in his Chinese heritage as well.

Lee was a devotee of Alan Watts, a 20th century British philosopher who introduced Eastern thought to Western audiences. Lee would tape Watts lectures and play them back to his martial arts students in class.

Lee, too, saw himself as bridge between the East and the West. He wanted to show Americans the beauty of Chinese philosophy and its culture, his friends and biographers say.

He told me that he could educate people about the East more in films than in books, says Dan Inosanto, one of Lees closest friends and his training partner. Inosanto filmed an insanely exciting fight scene with Lee in Game of Death where both battled one another using Lees signature weapon, nunchakus, a weapon that consists of two sticks connected by a short chain.

Of course, those old enough to remember when Lee was alive didnt go to his films to learn about esoteric Eastern teachings. They wanted to see him kick butt.

And Lee obliged. He hit the American movie screens in the early 1970s like a tsunami.

American audiences had never seen an action star like him before. The liquid grace of his movements; his feline quickness; the weird, high-pitched shrieks he gave off during combat. People squealed in delight so much during his films that a viewer rarely heard all the dialogue.

Lee was a racial pioneer, too. Here was an Asian man who wasnt depicted as a bucktoothed buffoon or fortune-cookie-quoting sage. He was an unabashed sex symbol. Women marveled over his lithe physique; one person said touching his hardened muscles was like touching warm marble.

But Lees mind his grasp of philosophy and his willpower was the engine that powered his physical prowess, says Bruce Thomas, author of Bruce Lee: Fighting Words.

What Lee did was harness energies outside the ordinary energies that are used for daily life, Thomas says. The martial arts were a way a life for him, a genuine path, a means of psychological development and spiritual development.

Another thinker who helped Lee harness those energies was Jiddu Krishnamurti, a philosopher born in India who taught that truth cant be found through any religious tradition or dogma.

In oneself lies the world and if you know how to look and learn, the door is there and the key is in your hand, he wrote. Krishnamurtis emphasis on self-reliance and disdain for mindlessly following tradition shaped Lees approach to the martial arts.

When Lee was alive, the martial arts world was rigidly divided by different fighting styles. He borrowed from virtually all of them to create his own revolutionary fighting called Jeet Kune Do, which he later turned into a book.

Today, Lee is often called the father of MMA, or mixed martial arts, for his willingness to be, as he once said, not one style, but all styles.

Krishnamurti was his go-to thinker, Thomas says. He taught that one must come to the present moment and not be tainted by rituals and dogmas. He took everything Krishnamurti said about religion and applied it to the martial arts.

Lees devotion to philosophy could have just remained an abstract pursuit. But it was also key to his physical speed and power. One martial artist said that Lee had the ability to move from perfect stillness and explode like a firecracker.

Lee could do that because he was able to tap into what ancient Chinese philosophers called chi.

In his book, The Warrior Within, Little described chi as a vast reservoir of free-flowing energy within all people that when channeled to our muscles, can give us great strength and, when channeled to our brain, can give us great insight and understanding.

Lees ability to summon chi at will was the culmination of years of philosophical contemplation and physical training, his biographers and students say.

Lee once described what it felt like to summon these energies within himself:

I feel I have this great creative and spiritual force within me that is greater than faith, greater than ambition, greater than confidence Whether it is the Godhead or not, I feel this great force, this untapped power, this dynamic something within me.

Lee also unleashed those energies through positive thinking. He was a fan of Norman Vincent Peale and read books such As a Man Thinketh, by James Allen. He would also jot down homespun aphorisms in his spare time like, Pessimism blunts the tools you need to succeed.

Lees philosophical beliefs could have been confined to books, but they were refined by events in his life that would have broken lesser people.

First, he had to deal with racism from both sides.

He was born in San Francisco, but grew up in Hong Kong in an affluent family. His father was an opera star and Lee became a childhood actor who appeared in at least 20 Chinese films. Lee started studying martial arts when he was 13 but his instructor stopped personally teaching him when he learned that Lees mother was part White, biographers say.

That experience shaped in part his decision to teach the martial arts to Westerners after he moved to America when he turned 18, some say. Teaching the martial arts to Westerners was taboo at the time, but Lee didnt care, says Doug Palmer, who was one of Lees first students in America.

I think the fact that he [Lee] was part white had something to do with it, Palmer says about Lees decision to teach Westerners. He himself had to overcome obstacles in Hong Kong because he was part white.

Lee then encountered racism from Hollywood.

He had gone to Hollywood with an idea for a television drama about the martial arts. They took his idea but rejected him for a role in the series because they thought he looked too Chinese for an America audience. They gave his role to an American actor and dancer. The drama would eventually become a hit television show called Kung Fu.

Lee also suffered a crippling back injury during training. Doctors told him he would never walk properly again and could never practice the martial arts. It was a low moment in his life. He was bedridden with a wife and two young children to support. At one point he only had $50 in the bank. He could have fallen into a debilitating depression but he overcame his injury through positive visualization, and he used that time to write his groundbreaking book, Jeet Kune Do, says Thomas, one of his biographers.

He healed himself, Thomas says.

Lees belief in the power of positive thinking comes through in a letter he wrote to a friend during that shaky period in his life.

He wrote:

I mean who has the most insecure job than I have? What do I live on? My faith in my ability that Ill make it. Sure my back injury screwed me up good for a year but with every adversity comes a blessing Look at a rain storm; after its departure everything grows.

Lee eventually broke through. He went to Hong Kong to make a series of films that caught Hollywoods attention. He then returned to Hollywood to make Enter the Dragon, which became a huge hit.

But Lee never lived long enough to see the culmination of all of his work.

Just days before the American release of Enter the Dragon, in 1973, Lee died in Hong Kong from an allergic reaction to pain medication he had taken. He was 32. Lees son, Brandon, who would follow him into the martial arts and film, would later die in 1993 from a freak accident with a prop gun on a movie set.

Lees friends still miss him. They talk less about his fighting ability and more about what fun he was to be around: his restless questioning, his optimism, his goofy sense of humor and his loyalty to friends.

He was a very charismatic person, says Palmer, who is now an attorney in Seattle. He could dominate most situations. You walk into a room and in most cases he would dominating the conversation.

Lees influence transcends the martial arts, Inosanto says.

I got letters after he died from people from almost all walks of life, from musicians to skateboarders they all said he influenced him, Inosanto says.

Lees global popularity is matched by only one other person, Inosanto says.

Muhammad Ali and Bruce Lee are the most recognizable faces in the world, Inosanto says. I was very lucky to have stumbled onto him. I never had a dull moment with him.

Lees family is introducing the martial artist to a new generation today.

Lees widow, Linda Lee Cadwell, and his daughter, Shannon Lee, established the Bruce Lee Foundation to share the art and philosophy of Lee. It gives out scholarships to students who embody Lees passion for learning and provides martial arts training to underprivileged youth.

Lees legacy is expanding in other ways too. There are now more authors writing not so much about Lees fighting ability but his resilience as an example to anyone who wants to express their individuality and overcome obstacles in life.

At the foot of Lees grave site in Seattle is a stone tablet with an inscription that reads: Your inspiration continues to guide us toward personal liberation.

Lees legacy is now bigger than any punch he ever threw.

Jim Carrey explores the absurdities of life (and himself) in novel – San Francisco Chronicle

The scenario sounds bleakly familiar. Holed up in his home, depressed and binge-watching Netflix while the apocalypse slowly gathers steam outside his door, Jim Carrey is spiraling.

At least, thats how we find Carrey at the start of the actors memoir-novel of sorts, Memoirs and Misinformation.

Its a likely story in the midst of the pandemic, but the difference is that the end-times in the book eventually come in the form of an alien invasion so, not exactly the same. And yet, much of the novel, which was co-written with novelist Dana Vachon, similarly appears as an absurdist fever dream whose satire of many things the end of the world, the evils of capitalism, the cult of celebrity suddenly doesnt feel like much of a satire anymore in these uncertain times.

Were being surprised by it on a daily basis, how prophetic it was, Carrey, 58, told The Chronicle in a recent video call, sitting next to Vachon as they quarantine together in an undisclosed location during their virtual press tour.

Most of the novel, which quickly became a New York Times bestseller after its release this month, is unequivocally fictional, but its underlying ideas speak to Carreys beliefs and, seemingly more with each passing day, to the upheavals of this year.

In the novel, Carrey is a self-spoofing caricature of himself, wrestling with the trials of fame and relevance: Should he do the the bombastic, Oscar-baiting Mao Zedong biopic (with Carrey as Mao) or the AI-scripted animated Disney film created to sell Hasbro toys? As he embarks on a quintessentially Hollywood journey that includes aliens and Rodney Dangerfield as a CGI hippo, all around him is hedonism, blind egomania and a certain insidious brand of American corporate gluttony.

Were all his victims victims of greed, Carrey says. Its this disease. Its the real pandemic thats going on greed is exacerbating everything else. Its making every issue we have in this country worse. The issues are there; theyre not about Trump.

Thoughtful and forthcoming, Carrey is much calmer than what one might reflexively associate with the actor whose megastar fame was built on hyperactive films such as Ace Ventura and The Mask. He is, in the earnest self-awareness he expresses at this point in his life, more akin to The Truman Show, the 1998 Peter Weir film he starred in that, in its premise of a man realizing his life is a program being filmed for others to consume, seemed to speak precisely to Carreys dizzying global fame at the time.

A long time ago I started seeing myself as a construct, Carrey says. Its not necessarily a negative thing. Its a natural thing for a human being to want to build walls around themselves that make them secure. You build a scaffolding of ideas around your fear and your desires for survival. Your survival mechanism does that. But at a certain point I saw it for what it was.

To consider Carrey simply through the lens of his filmic personae and stardom, then, is perhaps the very problem, and also the crux of Carreys struggle in the novel. Most of Memoirs and Misinformation plays with our cultures myopic and feverish view of celebrity, as an absurdist stream of movie stars constantly shuffles in and out of frame Tommy Lee Jones is a whiskey-soaked, Harvard s and Gwyneth Paltrow as much a computer hacker as she is Goop mogul.

The real-life Carrey is quick to acknowledge the good fortune and privileges of his success, but beyond the novels Hollywood bacchanal is a self-consuming tug-of-war with ego that applies to everyone, especially as capitalism has gradually dictated that our online presence be turned into personal brands and personas.

Jim is just in this incredibly unique position where he is on the mountaintop and can make some amazing observations about the cult of the self for everyone, Vachon says.

One of those observations is that the fixed self the brand or idea of Jim Carrey never really exists. It becomes sarcophagal. Im the guy that says alrighty then! and thats it, Carrey says. I dont have one cell in my body that is the same as when I did Ace Ventura.

When did Carrey realize that who he was existed outside of the construct? Almost yearly, he says.

After he played Andy Kaufman in Man on the Moon, obsessively absorbing himself into the role, he was left asking himself, Who was I again?

If I can enjoy losing myself in another persons character, then what am I? he says. Am I just that, too? Just another character being played?

In a sense, the book is the fullest portrait of Jim in showing this amazing thing he does, this Houdini act of escaping the last persona and rebirth, Vachon says. Hes an artist whos just uniquely adept at that.

The constant growth, the shedding of the fixed self, is what led to the novel. In recent years, Carrey has been, in his words, stepping through the Truman door to explore other forms of his artistry. He has painted prolifically, known perhaps most for his anti-Trump artwork, and spent some eight years writing the book with Vachon, in person and through Skype sessions.

Along the way, he seems to have deliberately entered a more tranquil place as a movie star. Spoofing the inner workings of the industry, the novel can be an act of talking back at the apparatus of contemporary Hollywood as it moves stars like money-making chess pieces to construct billion-dollar franchises.

You have to play to the audience sometimes, Carrey says. Theres pressure from the people who are guiding your career: Hey, we need some energy. We need to get you back out there. We need to do something thats popular. You always have to weigh those things out. I generally dont pick those things unless theres some good artistic reason for me to do them.

That includes his recent turn as the mustachioed villain in the recent blockbuster Sonic the Hedgehog, which was partially shot in San Francisco.

Sonic is a very prescient character to me, he says. Its not just funny it is funny, and its crazy and wonderful to be that insane but its also everything we fear right now, everything were dealing with. Are we going to be replaced by machines? Are we going to have a place when this place is entirely mechanized?

The same strain of questions courses through the novel, which in all its fantastical parody, he notes, revolves around the same deeply human truth: the fear of erasure the ego, again. In the novel, he fights to finally understand this when the world eventually crumbles around him and aliens overrun the planet. The real-life Carrey arrived at this understanding long ago, but he is also wise enough to know it never lasts.

Ill reach it once today, he says. People have this mistaken idea that they can get to an enlightened state and stay there. The fact is, if you have the understanding of what freedom is and how to get there, you can get there sometimes. But you cant get there and stay there.

Who Will Save Londons Nightlife? – HYPEBEAST

In early July, a few of Londons nightlife spaces slowly began to creak open. The Glory, a queer performance pub in Haggerston, has opened its doors following a new set of unusual, but necessary, coronavirus guidelines set out by the government. Around England, table service is mandatory (unless its not possible), serving assistants are clad in face masks and surfaces are anti-bacced to an inch of their inanimate lives. Despite the quiet music, lack of bar service and the fact that punters arent able to sit near each other or dance, the pub experience is surprisingly more personal, and revelers (like myself) have appreciated the intimacy of sitting down. While pubs and bars have received the green light to reopen, nightclubs have not received the same amount of attention from officials. It is far more difficult to maintain social distancing on a dance floor, so for now, these spaces are closed for the foreseeable future.

Even aside from the challenges of reopening in the midst of a pandemic, Londons nightlife has a mountain to climb. Today, the hospitality industry has to face rising costs (rent, overheads, events, supplies) and a growing generation of punters that seem less interested in clubs. In 2015, the BBC reported that nearly half of the U.K.s nightclubs had shut their doors in the previous 10 years. Jonny Woo, a co-owner of The Glory, reminds us of that reality: Nightlife thrives on its underground scene and as clubs are forced to have ever more present security and prices for drinks go up because the overheads are so high; the wild, hedonistic nature of clubbing gets strangled.

There are other issues to consider, too. In 2016, Fabric one of Londons best-known and most beloved techno clubs was forced to close its doors following two drug-related deaths (although it has since reopened thanks to a petition appeal that attracted over 160,000 signatures). Its hard to avoid the feeling that the nightlife industry might just be having its last dance.

Such petitions show how important and powerful community spirit is to many pubs, bars and nightclubs. Josh Caffe, a seasoned member of the underground house and techno scene known for his nights with Love Child LDN, reminisces on nightlife not too long ago. Despite all the challenges and closures London nightlife was experiencing, people were out in full force to support the ones that were pushing on.

When the line-ups are more mixed the crowds are too, because if you look up and see someone on stage from a DJ to a dancer who looks like you, it lets you know its a place for you.

Woo also noted another critical component of the future of nightlife: the threat of gentrification. He says, Clubs are already at risk due to lack of space in central London, the proliferation of flat building which is turning non-residential areas into areas with high-density accommodation and rent prices going up. Clubs will be the last to open, and I worry that the spaces that are left may be in danger if they remain closed for too long.

Prior to the coronavirus outbreak, Londons nightlife especially in the LGBTQ+ scene was thriving. I think the queer scene in London is the best its been since I moved to London 15 years ago, says Steven Braines, co-founder of the international house and techno event series HE.SHE.THEY., a place without prejudice for people to be people. There is a camaraderie between nights that didnt exist when I first hit the scene. It was a lot more competitive than collaborative. There are a lot of people using their nights as agents for change within the queer community, they added in reference to collectives like BBZ, Pxssy Palace and Sink the Pink.

Pioneering collectives such as HE.SHE.THEY. and pubs like The Glory strive to provide a safe space, and showcase talent and creativity. Through this, they create a sense of community within LGBTQ+ culture as well as for other marginalized groups. HE.SHE.THEY. literally exists to break up the straight, white male-monopoly of most big clubs Even queer clubs are often gay, white male-dominated spaces. When the line-ups are more mixed the crowds are too, because if you look up and see someone on stage from a DJ to a dancer who looks like you, it lets you know its a place for you; that youre represented and welcomed in the space. Its very simple, say Braines and HE.SHE.THEY. co-founder Sophia Kearney.

All venues are a place for people to come together. In todays coronavirus climate, bringing people together takes place on Zoom, where the act has taken on a new form. Whereas nightclubs and pubs serve as a place for hedonism, Instagram Live streams and Google Hangouts have become the venues way of keeping its community feeling loved. This has been successful for many, such as Love Child LDN and its TALKS series that has truly helped its community.

Community is at the forefront of a good night. At a time when were arguably more connected than ever before thanks to social media, the likes of HE.SHE.THEY. are using platforms not just to reach out to people but for positive change. We like to amplify different voices, suggest people who are interesting to be followed, shed light on causes, protests, charities we like. Its a watershed moment for change with Black Lives Matter, the continuing transformative power of #MeToo and a push back against the erosion of LGBTQIA+ rights, especially for the trans community. Our community is a broad church and what we do is intrinsically political as it is ideological. House and techno are political at their roots, say Braines and Kearney.

FOLD, a venue built with artists and audiences at the forefront of everything, also has community at its core. FOLDs nights are compelling enough to make you come out [of their venue] with another view on things. David Conde, head of marketing and communications at FOLD, thinks the community is not just what is keeping venues afloat but will see them thrive hereafter. He says, We have a very strong community at FOLD, we have thankfully been able to stay connected through technology. Social media has allowed our community to stay united and active, through our live streams, releasing online content and spotlighting local talent. Streaming and online contact is crucial to keeping connected and providing for the communities we support until we can open back up and celebrate under one roof again.

Since the lockdown, the world has experienced an uprising in the Black and POC communities.Social uprising and recent events have encouraged people to educate themselves. Venues can, and are, doing the same. Speaking on behalf of FOLD, Conde says, Since its inception, FOLD has been built on fundamental policies and taken measures to ensure that POC, women, members of the LGBTQ+ community, as well as other minority groups, feel represented and safe whilst attending events. This message of inclusivity is exercised through training in inclusion and awareness. This is also maintained by FOLD being active members of the communities it represents. These are our people, adds Conde.

If theres one thing that weve learned from closures, its that once these venues go, they dont come back.

The pandemic might act as a reset for many venues. This is a moment for organizers to rethink their approach, or to regenerate an underground scene that goes against the bourgeoisie. Or, as Conde says, it could give people time to think about what is necessary and what isnt. FOLD, The Glory, Sink the Pink, HE.SHE.THEY. and more are intrinsic in queer culture (and arguably society as a whole, albeit for different reasons). Nightlife is necessary, so much of the magic and beauty of nightlife comes from being under one roof, sharing the space, and we cant wait to have that back, adds Conde. The time off has allowed those like Conde and FOLD to further connect with their audiences, expand upon its sense of community, and for many, realize the importance it plays in many peoples lives. The cultural and social importance of these places is invaluable, despite what developers and accountants say, says Caffe.

The so-called reset is what could save Londons nightlife. Nightlife venues alone cant address the fact that queer people of color feel pushed out of many spaces; theres more that everyone can do. In a recent HYPEBEAST article, many queer people of color, and other members of the LGBTQ+ scene, spoke about people being pushed out of a lot of venues queer-centric or not.

As venues reopen, they need to look at how their internal policies can better support everyone in the community that has in turn supported them. I think there needs to be more LGBTQ+ POC inclusion on line ups. It gets exhausting and frustrating still seeing all-white lineups especially for nights or clubs that center their music around house and techno, says Caffe. While venues like those listed above are positively promoting inclusivity, the same cannot be said for all clubs across the country.

The overarching theme in order to save Londons nightlife is community, inclusivity and awareness. In the same vein, many people also just want a traditional local pub to go to. We talk a lot about losing queer venues, but no one talks about the community pub thats been there for years and becomes a hipster pub or a gastropub. [It] presents in such a way and has price points too high, so they feel very unwelcoming to the long-term local residents, says Woo. Such places thrived off community, and as Caffe reminds us all, If theres one thing that weve learned from closures, its that once these venues go, they dont come back.

While London definitely isnt the night-time mecca it used to be, many believe there is a future after COVID-19. Despite Woos realistic attitude, hes confident that there will always be individuals and small groups who want to do things their way, and they will find spaces to do it in. And these places thrive off of community. Theyre just like FOLD, The Glory, HE.SHE.THEY. and more. Its about the people that are keeping not just these venues open, but spirits alive. As Conde says, Everyone coming together to show their support proves there is a future for independent nightlife spaces and, in fact, with backing, we will flourish.

Opened in September 2019, House of Gods is a 22-room boutique hotel and cocktail bar just off Edinburghs Royal Mile. The mix of OTT interiors, lavish furnishings and hand-finished details offer a wow-factor thats usually only seen in high end abodes. Years spent working in London opened the eyes of brothers and owners, Ross and Mike Baxter, to a world of unapologetic luxury which was dampened by industry exclusivity, financial barriers and blown up price points. Both felt that there was a real desire for something luxurious and unique but affordable, and after a move home to Edinburgh, House of Gods was born.

Speaking at the time of opening, Mike Baxter said: From spending weekends on the road to individually collect 20 antique Chiavari chairs before reupholstering each in House of Hackney fabrics, to storing a free-standing nickel-plated bathtub in my loft for the past eight years, weve built this place with zero compromise.

The whole ethos of House of Gods is total bonkers boutique luxury thats available for everyone. The price reflects this, ranging from 80-150 per room, with an in-room continental breakfast included.

The rooms, which range from cosy cabins through to four-poster classic rooms to spacious suites feature luxurious dark red velvet wall coverings, with private bars hidden behind antique mirrors and floor-to-ceiling marble in every oak-panelled en-suite. The inspiration for the room design is the old-world decadence of the original Orient Express cabins with the addition of mod cons such as flat-screen TVs and Nespresso machines. Tactile furnishings in more velvet and fake fur plus moody lighting give a rock and roll edge.

In the cabin or classic rooms the bathrooms are marble-clad shower rooms whereas the suite boasts an oak-panelled bathroom with freestanding Victorian tub. Each is complete with sweet-smelling Cole and Lewis toiletries.

In the rooms guests will find a wifi enabled butler button which they can use to call for prosecco, breakfast or milk and cookies all complimentary. There is also an option to have cocktails delivered from the bar to rooms, or made in the corridor in front of guests. Rooms are sanitised before the housekeeping staff arrive, so an in-depth clean is done daily.

At House of Gods theres only wining (although breakfast is available) at the Lounge Bar, which features huge panels of Gucci Heron wallpaper, neon signs and Rosso Levanto Red Marble bar tops. The refined dcor is juxtaposed with an overhanging giant disco ball. The bar is home to a bespoke cocktail menu inspired by rock and rolls Bohemian past, with drinks named after tales of hotel hedonism and debauchery. It has been renovated to create a socially distanced space for customers, with Victorian-style screens and drapery to separate areas theres no perspex here.

However, the Yom Kippur War diminished the aura of national security surrounding the Alignment. That opened the door to many other complaints, which had been sidelined due to the security halo.

Although Netanyahu has conducted three consecutive election campaigns while burdened with serious indictments, and asked for the citizens trust in a government that was tainted with clear signs of corruption, his supporters claimed that he shouldnt be replaced due to his successes in economic matters.

Something wrong? they said. Were buying, traveling abroad, the restaurants are full, people are enjoying themselves here. Today, when the economy is in tatters and the coronavirus pandemic is not being managed, Netanyahu looks like a leader who has lost his way. His unique advantage has become a total disadvantage. He is no longer immune.

To understand the extent to which his situation has worsened, we have to ask whether he would dare today to stand in the courtroom and revile the legal system, as he did on May 24. Of course not. At the time he was seen as a magician who had eliminated the coronavirus, and thats what he was relying on.

He has run out of credit. Netanyahu is failing at management constantly changing decisions, engaging in petty politics, such as excluding the defense establishment from managing the virus due to political and party-related motives. He has cooked his own goose.

The demonstrations against him are authentic. Some are effective but some are actually helping him, unwittingly. For example, I read, even in Haaretz, many words of praise for the exceptional energy of the young people in front of the the prime ministers Balfour Street residence, who are storming the place like they want to conquer the Bastille. Those who support every protest are demonstrating great disdain for those who are meticulous about petty issues and arent rising to the magnitude of the moment.

I dare to oppose the storming of the prime ministers residence by some of the demonstrators, and their willingness to clash with policemen. How will the opposition to the continuation of Netanyahus rule benefit from physical confrontation with policemen on the way to conquering the fortress? Any step that helps him by reinforcing his image as a victim is ineffective from the point of view of those who want to remove him from power.

Netanyahu is not falling due to the corruption, or the danger to democracy, the sickening import of Trumpism; he is falling due to failures that are harming every citizen. Those involved in this protest, which is socioeconomic in nature, are likely to bring down his government. At the same time, the collapse of the main foundation on which his rule was based the citizens sense of economic security has provided the opening for intensified criticism on the social networks and in the media over the corruption and hedonism of Netanyahu and his family.

Clearly Netanyahu is not to blame for the coronavirus outbreak. But his handling of the crisis attests to an inability, in terms of mentality and leadership qualities, to deal with genuine crisis situations, as opposed to imaginary crisis situations, some of which he created.

The Business of Drugs is Netflixs new newsy docu-series, a six-episode investigative analysis of controlled substances and their place in international society. Our host is Amaryllis Fox, a former kid CIA agent she was recruited at age 21 who hopped the globe fighting the war on terror until 2010; in 2019, she wrote a book about her experiences, which will soon be an Apple TV+ series starring Brie Larson. Foxs voice gives The Business of Drugs a knowledgeable, engaging tone, making it more along the lines of Dirty Money journalism than Tiger King sensationalism.

Opening Shot: An overhead shot of a massive villa flanked by a fancy pool and palm trees, lit up at night.

The Gist: Episode one digs into the cocaine biz, and its glib before its serious: Once a mostly harmless leafy pick-me-up for the indigenous people of South America, the modern story of cocaine goes like so: Freud, Pablo Escobar, disco hedonism, Wall Street hedonism, crack, El Chapo, more Wall Street hedonism, Fox narrates. She briefly introduces herself before sitting down with a ski-masked Los Angeles drug dealer identified only as Roy; his dad dealt coke, and now he does too, in small quantities because if he gets busted, the charges arent as severe.

Fox interviews a doctor who explains the addictive properties of cocaine, and a Yale professor who breaks down some of the economic context of the drug trade. She goes to Colombia, the apex of coca plant growth thanks to swaths of unoccupied land and an ideal climate. Farmers grow and harvest the leaves, hand them off to labs in the middle of the jungle that mash them into a paste, which is then sold to cartels, who process it into powder, and take it to the massive Buenaventura port, where its hidden in exported goods. Fox hangs out with one middleman who crams packages of cocaine inside stuffed kittens inside kiddie backpacks, then hops into a tiny canoe and heads to a dropoff point; he risks his well-being to make a measly $300 for every drop. She also watches as military workers rip up coca plants in the jungle. At the port, others tackle the needle-in-a-haystack job, probing a few among hundreds of sacks of coffee; they find 56 kilos stuffed in a ships propeller compartment, worth $4.6 million in U.S. street value.

Oh, by the way, heres a statistic for you: the Colombian government spends a lot of money (how much exactly, the doc doesnt say) to seize five tons of coke annually, out of 1,400 tons distributed. Cartels sell $24 BILLION worth of cocaine every year just to the United States. As they say, LET THAT SINK IN. Fox heads to Mexico, where a couple guys hang out with a pallet stacked with $8 million worth of cocaine, then load it up for a trip to the border. Just south of El Paso, Texas, the tunnels distributors used to use to get the product across the border are obsolete. Now, theyre mixed in with other goods in trucks, sometimes without the drivers even knowing. Fox wraps it up, and I paraphrase: Legalization may seem extreme, but many lives are lost and a lot of money is spent as governments battle these black-market monopolies. What the hell are we doing?

Our Take: Curious, how the first episode of Business opens with that spiel about Freud and Wall Street and all that, then never bothers to elaborate on it, or even return to that arch, colorful tone. It quickly settles into the nitty-gritty of the ins and outs of the cocaine trade, tosses in a few op-ed assertions, a handful of whopper statistics and some fascinating firsthand accounts by individuals participating in low-level criminal activity, then gets out in an all-too-brief 45 minutes.

Foxs presence is strong, credible and down-to-earth qualities necessary for gaining access to men working on coca farms in Columbia, in drug safehouses in Mexico and on the streets of Compton. Director Matthew Heineman did similar things in gripping feature doc Cartel Land, but gave us a deeper and more palpable sense of being embedded smack in the middle of dangerous business.

Youll like Fox, but wish she was more assertive. The episode focuses on production and distribution aspects of the business, and relegates the effects of that business deaths, poverty to a few brief inferences. Its black market commerce, so of course it has detrimental effects on societys structure and people. The doc presents an outline chock-full of facts and a fair amount of heady analysis, but fails to flesh it out with any content about the effects of cocaine on humanity; its just a given that its bad, I guess, so it skips the heart and goes for the head. Fox makes a few tossed-off statements about legalization; notices how the area surrounding Buenaventura is horribly stricken with poverty but offers no data relating to it; and implies that the war on drugs is a fruitless enterprise perpetuated by wrongheaded governments. But she never really stirs up the moral outrage that would make her arguments more compelling.

Parting Shot: Roy walks down a dark, damp L.A. alley, presumably to resume his drug-dealing business.

Sleeper Star: How about every person crazy/brave enough to go on camera even with ski-mask on and voice altered and talk about the illegal stuff they do every day?

Most Pilot-y Line: Fox: Ive seen this kind of thing with the war on terror a ton of money spent with little effective result.

Our Call: I hesitate to say STREAM IT. The first episode of The Business of Drugs feels incomplete, and maybe a little wishy-washy. But youll learn something anyway, and future episodes addressing heroin, meth and opioids carry promise.

Can machines think? Alan Turing, 1950

Less than a decade after breaking the Nazi encryption machine Enigma and helping the Allied Forces win World War II, mathematician Alan Turing changed history a second time with a simple question: "Can machines think?"

Turing's paper "Computing Machinery and Intelligence" (1950), and it's subsequent Turing Test, established the fundamental goal and vision of artificial intelligence.

At it's core, AI is the branch of computer science that aims to answer Turing's question in the affirmative. It is the endeavor to replicate or simulate human intelligence in machines.

The expansive goal of artificial intelligence has given rise to manyquestions and debates. So much so, that no singular definition of the field is universally accepted.

The major limitation in defining AI as simply "building machines that are intelligent" is that it doesn't actually explain what artificial intelligence is? What makes a machine intelligent?

In their groundbreaking textbook Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach, authors Stuart Russell and Peter Norvig approach the question by unifying their work around the theme of intelligent agents in machines. With this in mind, AI is "the study of agents that receive percepts from the environment and perform actions." (Russel and Norvig viii)

Norvig and Russell go on to explore four different approaches that have historically defined the field of AI:

The first two ideas concern thought processes and reasoning, while the others deal with behavior. Norvig and Russell focus particularly on rational agents that act to achieve the best outcome, noting "all the skills needed for the Turing Test also allow an agent to act rationally." (Russel and Norvig 4).

Patrick Winston, the Ford professor of artificial intelligence and computer science at MIT, defines AI as "algorithms enabled by constraints, exposed by representations that support models targeted at loops that tie thinking, perception and action together."

While these definitions may seem abstract to the average person, they help focus the field as an area of computer science and provide a blueprint for infusing machines and programs with machine learning and other subsets of artificial intelligence.

While addressing a crowd at the Japan AI Experience in 2017, DataRobot CEO Jeremy Achin began his speech by offering the following definition of how AI is used today:

"AI is a computer system able to perform tasks that ordinarily require human intelligence... Many of these artificial intelligence systems are powered by machine learning, some of them are powered by deep learning and some of them are powered by very boring things like rules."

While AI often invokes images of the sentient computer overlord of science fiction, the current reality is far different. At its heart, AI uses the same basic algorithmic functions that drive traditional software, but applies them in a different way.

A standard warehouse management system, for example, can show the current levels of various products, while an intelligent one could identify shortages, analyze the cause and its effect on the overall supply chain, and even take steps to correct it.

Artificial intelligence can be allowed to replace a whole system, making all decisions end-to-end, or it can be used to enhance a specific process.

For example, analyzing video footage to recognize gestures, or replacing peripheral devices (keyboard, mouse, touchscreen) with a speech to text system., giving the impression that one is interacting with a sentient being.

Just as philosophers debate the nature of man and the existence of free will, computer science experts debate the various types of AI.

Capable of performing only a limited set of predetermined functions; think, autonomous cars, retail kiosks, etc.;

Said to equal the human minds ability to function autonomously according to a wide set of stimuli;

Which will one day exceed human intelligence (and conceivably take over the world).

At the moment, Narrow AI is only beginning to enter mainstream computing applications.

Can only react to existing situations, not past experiences.

Relies on stored data to learn from recent experiences to make decisions.

Capable of comprehending conversational speech, emotions, non-verbal cues and other intuitive elements;

Human-level consciousness with its own desires, goals and objectives.

A good way to visualize these distinctions would be an AI-driven poker player. A reactive machine would base decisions only on the current hand in play, while a limited memory version would consider past decisions and player profiles.

Using Theory of Mind, however, the program would pick up on speech and facial cues, and a self-aware AI might start to consider if there is something more worthwhile to do than play poker.

AI is currently being applied to a range of functions both in the lab and in commercial/consumer settings:

Allows intelligent systems to convert human speech into text or code.

A subset of speech recognition, enables conversational interaction between humans and computers.

Allows a machine to scan an image and identify it using comparative analysis.

Perhaps the most revolutionary aspect of AI, however, is that it allows software to rewrite itself as it adapts to its environment.

Unlike traditional upgrade programs that take years and are often buggy, or even newer DevOps processes that push changes quickly with less disruption, AI allows a given program to optimize itself to highly specialized use cases.

This should not only lower the cost of software licensing and support, it should provide steadily improving performance and the development of unique processes that deliver crucial advantages in an increasingly competitive economy.

If Artificial intelligence lives up to the hype and becomes the dominant force of our future, in the end, we will face a significant power overhaul that may destabilize the current structure of our society.

Companies that control and develop AI solutions, as well as those who have the capital to hire them, will become the new power figures in charge. This means that the companies which manage to become the dominant force may shape our future according to their own vision and perception.

In the end, there is the risk that AI may not fulfil the potential it is renowned for. Although the progress in the last few years was a remarkable one, there is no guarantee that we will be able to continue with the same pace and when it will reach its peak.

Eight years ago, I was packing my home and entire life in Mexico to move to the US to pursue a PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California-Irvine. Those were easier times, although it did not seem like it at the time. I spent a few months worth of income to pay for paperwork to apply for an F-1 student visa, and to pay for other documents to enroll as a graduate student. This was after I dedicated months to emailing professors everywhere in the US, hoping that one of them would reply to my email and would invite me to apply to join their lab. It was also after spending time and money paying for standardized tests, official document translations, and application fees. It was a one-and-a-half-year process but in July 2012, I was finally moving to the USA to pursue my PhD. It was a dream come true.

It was also a dream come true for the University of California because I had a full scholarship from my home country that paid for the entirety of my international tuition and fees, which were around $35,000 per year. My scholarship allowed me to pursue my PhD in the USA, and to UC Irvine it provided basically free labor as well as prestige.

I paid taxes and did all of the typical graduate student responsibilities. I also dedicated a lot of my time to doing outreach to bring science to underserved communities around Orange County and Southern California. By the time I graduated in 2017, I was a stellar student, with three publications with UC Irvine's name on them. I co-organized summer science camps for middle school girls that brought money and a good reputation to my university and program. I mentored students of all ages. I was a good citizen of my program, of my university, and of Orange County.

Like me, most international students leave their families and everything that they are comfortable with to pursue the dream of graduate school. They bring with them the hope of being welcomed and treated fairly by their American peers. I have experienced this, but I am one of the lucky ones.

It is no secret that international students and postdocs will withstand abuse and other injustices just so they can keep their visa, which is always tied to their university. Many universities receive international students without having a system to deal with the unique challenges that international students face, such as having no credit history, which complicates finding a place to live and leaves international students vulnerable to landlord abuse. Many international students are people of color, and universities, especially predominantly white institutions, do not have resources to ensure safety of these students within the university and in the community at large.

These challenges are further complicated due to a lack of community and support. Making friends in the US, especially if you are coming from Global South countries and/or non-Westernized countries, is extremely challenging. Many times, I have seen how western Europeans, Australians, and Canadians are rapidly accepted in the local community, while many Latinx, Asians, and Middle-Easterners are not.

There are over one million international students in the US. The ICE Student Ban may no longer be a threat, but universities still need to change how they handle international students. We are people too, but many universities have historically valued us only by the amount of money we bring. We improve higher education not only by the money that we bring, but by our unique perspectives, our research productivity, and our willingness to give back to American society.

Well, the researchers beg to differ. A new study has found out an overlap between human and machine, helping us understand how virtual eyes perceive things different as compared to what we process in our brains.

According to research conducted by a team from the Medical University of South Carolina, the brain uses similar visual areas for mental imagery and vision.

However, the low-level visual areas are used less precisely with mental imagery as compared to the vision. The latest study was published in the journal Current Biology on June 22.

Neuroscientist Thomas Naselaris, also a co-author in the paper, revealed, "We know mental imagery is in some ways very similar to vision, but it can't be exactly identical. We wanted to know specifically in which ways it was different."

He works at the Medical University of South Carolina.

The latest findings prove beneficial to study in detail about the mental imagery and vision for mental health disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The new research was conducted using an fMRI scanner and an artificial neural network, which mimicked the human brain.

They can further explore the mental imagery disruptions pattern in other mental health problems such as schizophrenia.

Naselaris added that when a human imagines, the brain activity is less precise. Our brain often misses the details, leading to the fuzziness and blurriness in brain activity.
