Virgin Galactic reveals cabin interior of its first SpaceShipTwo vehicle – Inceptive Mind

Virgin Galactic continues to prepare to send space tourists into Earth orbit. And now, the space travel company has shown how the cabin interior of its first SpaceShipTwo vehicle, VSS Unity, will look like. In a virtual event streamed live on YouTube, the company demonstrated cockpit footage taken during test flights between space and the atmosphere.

The cabin will have six passenger seats and was designed to maximize the vision of the Earth, with 12 cabin windows, 16 cameras, and a large mirror at the rear. The seats are made of the highest-grade aluminum and carbon-fiber manufacturing techniques. The color palette of the cabin has been carefully curated so that it complements the architecture of the seat, the cabin itself, and spacesuits.

Each seat is near a large porthole, each of which has a camera connected so that the passenger can be photographed with the Earth in the background. Other windows running through the roof of the cabin offers a spectacular view of the planet.

The seats are far apart, with a long center passage between them. The rear wall of the cabin is represented by a large mirror, which will provide passengers with the opportunity to see themselves in microgravity. There are slots in the headrests of the seats so that passengers with long hair can gather them in a ponytail and place them comfortably.

Special attention was paid to the seat belts. They consist of five ribbons and a round buckle located on the passengers chest. You can open the seat belt with a simple twist, after which a special mechanism will remove the belts so that they do not interfere in microgravity conditions.

The cockpit is capable of receiving signals from a Virgin Atlantic aircraft. There is a lighting system around the windows, which signals the different stages of the flight. A white light indicates the initial climb; the orange light indicates rocket engine ignition. In space, the lights turn black. In addition, there are screens in the back of the seats that display each phase of the flight for passengers.

The output from 16 cabin cameras, plus those in the cockpit and mounted externally, will generate high definition output to provide everything from the first Instagram posts, to a beautifully edited and historically significant personal movie.

The firm founded by British billionaire Richard Branson has repeatedly postponed the date of its first commercial flight, although its managers recently said it is only a matter of a few months. It also notes that some more test flights are needed before that, including with several company employees as passengers.

Anglerfish Physically Fuse to Their Mates, And We Finally Know How That’s Possible – ScienceAlert

Dating is hard enough when you have ample choice, but imagine drifting through a dark nothingness, half-formed and hopeless, starved for nutrients and love.

So goes the life of a bachelor anglerfish, and when there aren't plenty of fish in the deep sea, you can't blame them for being a little clingy when they do find one.

Still, some anglerfish take that neediness to the extreme.When certain species sniff out a giant female in the dark, they will whip out their sharp teeth and bite their date by the belly.

Once they have a firm grasp, these tiny males, sometimes no bigger than a centimetre, willrelease an enzyme that dissolves the surrounding skin, melding his and her tissues, and establishing a common circulation of blood.

Comfortable at last in a relationship that serves him up regular meals, the male may even start to lose its eyes, fins and some internal organs.

In this gruesome way, these fish become nothing more than loyal and loving appendages with testes. Or, more accurately, sexual parasites.

As one naturalist put it in 1938: "This is sheer fiction, beyond all belief unless we have seen the proof of it."

And we have - we've actually got footage. Outside of identical conjoined twins, scientists say this is the only other example of sexual parasitism that's naturally occurring.

For 100 years, we've wondered how anglerfish actually do it, and now we might have figured it out.

Even for the best doctors, fusing foreign tissue and establishing a common blood circulation is incredibly difficult. Human organ transplantation requires lifelong immunosuppressants, because vertebrate immune systems are evolved to attack foreign matter that may pose a threat.

But anglerfish don't seem to have those issues. Studying the genomes of 10 different anglerfish species, scientists have found these fish have differences in several crucial parts of the vertebrate immune system.

Some species were missing the genes that encoded for a type of antigen found on the surface of somatic cells, and which is known to signal the immune system when invaders arrive.

These are known as major histocompatibility (MHC) antigens, and while they are usually great for our health, they cause a lot of problems during organ and bone marrow transplantation when we want foreign matter to stay.

"Apart from this unusual constellation of MHC genes, we discovered that the function of killer T cells, which normally actively eliminate infected cells or attack foreign tissues during the organ rejection process, was also severely blunted if not lost entirely," says immunobiologist Jeremy Swann from the Max Planck Institute in Germany.

"These findings hinted at the possibility that the immune system of anglerfishes was very unusual among the tens of thousands of vertebrate species."

To make these fish even stranger, researchers found some species were missing antibodies - the second major immune defence system, which tag invaders for attack.

In humans, the authors say, the loss of all these immune facilities would most likely kill us.

"The study thus shows that despite several hundred million years of co-evolutionary partnership of innate and adaptive functions, vertebrates can survive without the adaptive immune facilities previously considered to be irreplaceable," says immunologist Thomas Boehm from the Max Planck Institute.

"We assume that as-yet unknown evolutionary forces first drive changes in the immune system, which are then exploited for the evolution of sexual parasitism."

The question has thus gone from: how did anglerfish evolve to survive fusing with another?; to: how did anglerfish evolve to survive without the most crucial parts of the vertebrate immune system?

Clearly, these fish aren't completely unprotected. The authors think they must be drawing on some innate immunity to fight off infection - one that doesn't remember and adapt to pathogens, simply kills them outright.

If that's true, it undermines a key assumption of vertebrate evolution.

"Our findings challenge the view that, once innate and adaptive immune systems have engaged in co-evolution, neither arm can be eliminated without detrimental consequences," the authors write.

Instead, it appears that anglerfish have lost key aspects of this adaptive immune system after it evolved among most vertebrates some 500 million years ago.

"We find it remarkable that the unusual mode of reproduction was invented several times independently in this group of fishes," says evolutionary biologist Theodore (Ted) Pietsch from the University of Washington.

Among the genomes studied, the authors actually identified several stages of this strange evolution in action. The less strong the physical attachment between mates, the more the anglerfish immune system resembled other vertebrates.

As of now, we can't say for sure why these anglerfish have adapted such odd immune systems, but it seems likely that it's somehow tied to their strange reproductive habits.And these are most likely driven, in some way, by their lonesome environment.

When there's no hope for life outside of love, it seems these fish will give up up just about anything for a life partner, their fins, their eyes, their immune systems, and even their organs.

"There's basically no integrity at this point," Pietsch told The New York Times.

It is well known, and accepted in scientific circles, that the conditions on our planet are extremely fine-tuned for life: the Earth is just the right size, it is just the right distance from its sun, our sun is the right type of star, our atmosphere has many rare and lucky features the list goes on and on.A few of these fine-tuned features are documented inEpisode 4ofScience Uprising. Of course materialists have an explanation for it all: there are many planets in the universe, only a very few are suitable for life, but we are here because our Earth is one of these rare planets.

It is also well known, and documented in the sameScience Uprisingepisode, that not only is our Earth an ideal planet for life to thrive, but our whole universe is finely tuned for life. The smallest changes in most of the basic constants (the gravitational constant, the charge and mass of the electron, etc.) or in the initial conditions at the Big Bang, would have led to a universe where life, and therefore humans, could not have arisen.Stephen Hawking wrote inA Brief History of Time(1988): The remarkable fact is that the values of these numbers seem to have been very finely adjusted to make possible the development of life.

According to materialists, there must be many universes, with many different laws and constants and initial conditions, and we are here because our universe is one of those rare universes where the conditions are just right for us to be here. A.J. Leggett lists some of the fine-tuned properties of our universe inThe Problems of Physics(1987). He concludes:

World-renowned Rice University chemist James Tour, inScience UprisingEpisode 5, explains why we are nowhere close to explaining how life arose.To see how flawed the second assumption is you only have to realize that what materialists believe is that the four fundamental, unintelligent, forces of physics alone could have rearranged the basic particles of physics into computers, encyclopedias, airplanes, and iPhones, as my new video,Why Evolution Is Different, brings out. (The video also points out how similar the fossil record is to the development of human technology, with large gaps where major new features appeared for the same reasons.)The laws of physics are very cleverly designed, and probablycanexplain everything that has happened on Jupiter, but I do not believe that they are clever enough to explain everything that has happened on Earth.

On the other hand, there is no evidence therecan beno evidence that there are other universes out there, with the same laws of physics but random values for the basic constants (or perhaps random laws of physics also?), so the explanation that our universe is just right because otherwise we would not be here to wonder about it is completely unscientific.That this argument is just a desperate, last-ditch effort to avoid the obvious conclusion of design is evident from the fact that materialists do not use it to explain the evolution of life also.If it is reasonable to explain astronomically improbable fine-tuning of the constants of physics by inventing enough other universes, why not invent a few more and claim that in one of these many universes intelligent beings arose by pure chance?

On the finite random multiverse view, we should very likely live in a bare-bones world, with little or nothing in life beyond whats absolutely required to produce intelligent observers.So if we find ourselves in a world lavished with extras with much more than the minimum we should bet heavily against our world being the result of a finite multiverse scenario. It is difficult to make a rigorous argument on such a question. Yet it seems that our world is quite lush and contains much more than whats absolutely needed for intelligence.

So Michael Dentons currentseriesatEvolution News is particularly interesting because he is confirming, in a more rigorous way, whatBeheand many others of us have suspected: that the conditions on Earth, and the laws of physics, are not only fine-tuned for the survival of intelligent beings, they are also fine-tuned for the development of technology. Astronomer Guillermo Gonzales, for example, discusses inthisvideo some of the lucky coincidences that make Earth an ideal place fordiscoveryof the rest of the universe.

These fine-tunings for the development of technology, and for scientific discovery, are interesting because they cannot be explained by The conditions were just right because otherwise we would not be here to wonder about it arguments. We would still be here to wonder if the conditions on Earth, and the properties of fire, water, and metals, were not so fine-tuned to make the development of advanced technology possible. We would still be here to wonder, if our Earth were not so ideally situated for discovery of the universe. Technology and scientific discovery are just extras, which result in a more lush world.

But not to worry, materialists will never run out of ways to avoid the obvious conclusion of design.It is only a question of time until we hear, Of course conditions on our planet and universe are fine-tuned for the development of technology. Alan Parker, director of Midnight Express and Bugsy Malone, dies aged 76 – The Guardian

Alan Parker, the British director behind a string of hits including Midnight Express, Bugsy Malone, and The Commitments, has died aged 76.

The news was announced by a representative, who said he had died on Friday after a lengthy illness.

Matthew Modine was among those paying tribute on social media, saying: Being cast in his epic film, Birdy, transformed my life. Alan was a great artist whos films will live forever. Godspeed, Sir Alan. Composer Andrew Lloyd-Webber added: Very sad to hear the news of Alan Parkers death. My friend and collaborator on the Evita movie and one of the few directors to truly understand musicals on screen. Producer David Puttnam, who collaborated with Parker on Bugsy Malone and Midnight Express, wrote on social media: Alan Parker was my oldest and closest friend and I never ceased to be in awe of his talent. My life, and those of many others who loved, respected and admired him will never be quite the same again.

Parker, who was born in 1944 in Islington, London, first made his name in the advertising industry, getting a job as a postroom boy after leaving school and eventually establishing himself as a director. Among his best known TV commercials were for Cinzano, featuring Joan Collins and Leonard Rossiter, and Parker developed a reputation for astute comic ability. However, along with a clutch of contemporaries such as Adrian Lyne and Ridley and Tony Scott, he had ambitions for the big screen and, after the TV film The Evacuees (scripted by Jack Rosenthal), he made his feature film debut with Bugsy Malone a project that he would later tell the Guardian was a ludicrous idea that really ought not to work.

Starring Scott Baio and Jodie Foster, Bugsy Malone was a gangster film featuring kids throwing shaving foam pies and shooting splurge guns; it got Hollywoods attention, and he was hired to direct the Oliver Stone scripted Midnight Express, which garnered Parker an Oscar nomination for its high impact depiction of an American incarcerated in Turkey after being arrested for drug smuggling.

A string of successful films followed, many music based. The performing-arts student musical Fame (1980) spawned a generations infatuation with legwarmers, while his subsequent effort, Shoot the Moon, was in sharp contrast a drama about marital breakdown starring Albert Finney and Diane Keaton. In the same year, 1982, Parker released Pink Floyd The Wall, which starred Bob Geldof in a surreal feature film realisation of the hit Pink Floyd album.

Parker returned to Hollywood with the Vietnam war drama Birdy (1984), which starred Matthew Modine and Nicolas Cage; after that came the cult thriller Angel Heart (featuring Robert De Niro as the satanic Louis Cyphre), and civil rights thriller Mississippi Burning (1988) for which he received a second best director Oscar nomination. The exuberant Roddy Doyle adaptation The Commitments was released in 1991. In 1996 he directed Madonna in a film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice musical Evita, and subsequently adapted Frank McCourts memoir Angelas Ashes, with Emily Watson in the lead role.

Towards the end of the 1990s, Parker unexpectedly emerged as the leading figure in the British film establishment: he was appointed chairman of the British Film Institute (BFI) in 1998 and two years later became the first chairman of the newly formed UK Film Council, which distributed lottery money to the newly resurgent British film industry. He was knighted in 2002. The abolition of the Film Council in 2010 as part of the Bonfire of the Quangos caused him great annoyance: I was very angry that the government abolished it; it was a petulant, political act.

However, his film-making career virtually ground to a halt, with The Life of David Gale becoming his final directorial credit in 2003. Parker later told the Guardian: The truth is, as I get older, the attraction of being up to my knees in Mississippi mud is growing less and less. Film-making is a physically hard job. I have an eight-year-old son, and I see him every day. I was never there for my four grownup children; I was always on location somewhere. That isnt the kind of life I want any more.

Having said that, I truly miss the cameraderie of the film set. A lot of directors prefer the solitude of the editing process, but I revel in the craziness of what a film set is. I do miss that.

In his later years, Parker turned to painting, telling the Observer: I was very lucky to find such a creative outlet so late in life and quite separate to my day job as a director. I had been directing since I was 24 years old and it was refreshing to do something creative on my own, without the help of 100 other people. I can honestly say that since Ive concentrated on the painting full time, the last three years have been the most enjoyable of my life.

Parker married Annie Inglis in 1966; they divorced in 1992; he later married Lisa Moran in 2001, who survives him.

When these cellular linings are broken or disrupted, foreign matter or waste products can potentially enter the cell and attack the organelles and cell as a whole, Coogan says, adding that such antioxidants as vitamins A, C and E, along with copper, selenium and zinc, are beneficial in helping to prevent these kinds of attacks on cells.

While people often turn to supplements to get antioxidants and vitamins, Coogan doesnt recommend them. Food first, she says, followed by supplements only if necessary.

Move for Health

Exercise is another important factor in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Working out directly affects your immune system because of the purposeful stress response you put onto the body, Coogan says, adding that when we work out, free radicals are produced.

But isnt that counterproductive?

So you want to boost your immune system, but youre not sure what to eat. Samantha M. Coogan, director of the Didactic Program in Nutrition and Dietetics at UNLV, has some recommendations. Next time youre at the grocery store, load up on the following:

red, orange and yellow produce

Coogan says the production of free radicals is a normal occurrence, and explains why nutrition before and after a workout is critical to help fight off those free radicals after your exercise session, and to help recover and repair the stressed and damaged muscle tissue.

Again, Coogan assures this is all completely normal, and even beneficial. The more we expose our bodies to that type of external stimulus, it requires the body to react every time, she says. Each time, it will adapt more quickly and readily.

Finding a safe way to exercise during the pandemic can present its difficulties, especially in the summer when living in the desert. Lifting weights at home, following a yoga instruction video on YouTube and hiking are just a few ways to incorporate activity into your daily routine.

Another advantage of exercise: its role in alleviating stress, which can wreak havoc on the immune system.

Neurotransmitters and stress hormones are released in direct response to external stimuli, whether it be physical stresslike exercise or physical traumaor mental and emotional stress, Coogan says. Cortisol tends to be one of the biggest culprits when it comes to stress, which also hinders weight management or loss, because cortisol increases fat around the organs, known as visceral fat. While other stress hormones like epinephrine and norepinephrine are responsible for the fight or flight response, cortisol is the main obstacle when it comes to weight maintenance and our stress response, Coogan says.

Exercise for the mind

People are more stressed now than ever before, but even during a pandemic, we can incorporate stress-relieving activities into our daily lives.

One way to reduce stressful responses: Give yourself something on which to focus. Stimulating your brain can help stave off stress, especially if you try something new, Coogan says, although she clarifies that doing something familiar can be just as effective.

Find something unrelated to work, school, the pandemic or whats going on around the world right now, and find something that brings you happiness and puts a smile on your face, Coogan says. The health expert recommends video games, a comforting TV show or movie, reading, meditation, puzzles, yoga, brain teasers, painting, adult coloring books, an instrument, knitting or learning a new skill.

Coogan says that during the pandemic, she picked up embroidery as a new hobby. Im so in love with it, she says. I am a very detail-oriented person, and getting lost in the intricacies of the patterns and the way the threads come together to form this beautiful work of art produces very happy hormones and brings me a lot of joy and satisfaction in the work Ive done. I can get lost in it for hours as I give all my attention to the detail of the pattern, with my favorite music playing or a comedy special on in the background.

Coogan says the activity doesnt have to be intricate or complicatedor produce anything. If it has a positive benefit to you, keep doing it, she says. If youve mastered that boss level 100 times, but each time you do it, it makes you feel good, then keep doing it. If sitting on the couch for nine hours straight binge-watching See with Jason Momoa brings you joy and fulfillment for that day, despite no productivity in the traditional sense, thats also OK, Coogan says, adding that she may or may not have done that herself.

Vegging out, she says, is still a way of taking control of stress. Just dont let yourself get lost in your own silence or your own head, Coogan says, warning that can trigger even more stress. Its all about moderation and finding healthy habits.

Megaripple Migration Offers Insights into Martian Atmosphere – Eos

Scientists show for the first time that large sand ripples known as megaripples are migrating on Mars, according to a new study. The findings suggest Marss dusty surface might be much more active than previously suspected, offering clues about the Red Planets poorly understood atmosphere.

Sand dunes and ripples are typical features of deserts on both Earth and Mars. Megaripples are distinguished from smaller ripples by the coarser sand grains that gather at their crests, as well as by their larger size: Megaripples range from 30 centimeters (1 foot) to tens of meters across. Megaripples develop taller crests and migrate more slowly because their coarser grains are more difficult for wind to move.

Until now, scientists thought megaripples were relics of Marss more geologically active past. Many thought it was impossible for the Red Planets thin atmosphere100 times less dense than Earthsto conjure up winds powerful enough to move the coarser crests. But the new study by Silvestro et al. shows that wind can blow hard enough to move megaripples, suggesting the Martian atmosphere is more dynamic than previously thought.

The implications are global in terms of climate, said Simone Silvestro, lead author of the new study and a staff research scientist at the National Institute for Astrophysics in Naples, Italy. If you see these features are moving now, it means you dont need the past climate to explain them.

Megaripples are apparent in high-resolution images of Marss surface, but researchers considered them a now-static fixture formed long ago when the planets atmosphere was thicker.

Scientists had once thought the same of even small ripples in the sand, Silvestro said. Since the 80s and 90s, Mars was considered kind of dead from a geological point of view, he said.

Ten years ago, Silvestro and his colleagues used high-resolution images of Marss surface to prove that wind was moving the planets smaller ripples, publishing the findings in Geophysical Research Letters. Silvestros ripples study showed dynamic winds did exist on Mars, capable of changing the patterns of sand on the planets surface.

For his latest study, Silvestro and his colleagues looked at images of megaripples from HiRISE, the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter that has been taking pictures of the planets surface since 2006. They focused on two dune-associated locations, Nili Fossae and McLaughlin Crater, comparing images of megaripples at each site that were taken 5 Martian years apart. The team found that the megaripples moved an average of 1.2 meters (4 feet) at Nili Fossae and 0.9 meter (3 feet) at McLaughlin Crater over the roughly 5-year period.

Now, 10 years later, we are seeing also the megaripples are moving, Silvestro said. They are the last thing you would expect to see moving, [but] they are also moving.

The researchers noted that a previously known trait of Martian megaripples could also hold clues about the Martian atmosphere: Their crests are bright toned. Most of the sand covering Marss surface comes from basaltic rocks, giving dunes a dark color in HiRISE images, but megaripples buck this trend.

There are a couple of potential reasons for the megaripples crests lighter color scheme, Silvestro said. They are bright either because their slow movement relative to the dunes allows fine dust from the atmosphere to settle and accumulate or because the coarse sand that makes up the crests is itself composed of a different material. Either possibility could tell researchers more about the dynamics of the Martian atmosphere.

The research is a reminder that as scientists strive to learn more about the Red Planet, sometimes the answers can be found closer to home.If you want to understand the climate of Mars and the geology of Marspresent and pastand if you want to continue exploration by sending robots and one day sending humans, we want to know much more about the circulation of Mars and how the winds interact with the surface material, Silvestro said.

Interest in megaripples on Mars has sparked renewed interest in the phenomenon back on Earth. Past studies on Earth megaripples and research grants Silvestro received to study megaripples in Morocco provided crucial information for his Mars megaripple research. Its a reminder that as scientists strive to learn more about the Red Planet, sometimes the answers can be found closer to home, he said.

These waves in sand have been studied for 150 years, Silvestro said of terrestrial megaripples. They probably thought that they were studying stuff that nobody would be interested in. Differences between discs of active and non-active galaxies detected for the first time – Science Codex

This study, just accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics Letters, is the first evidence for large scale dynamical differences between active and non-active galaxies in the local universe. The astronomers participating are from the Instituto de Astrofsica de Canarias (IAC) and the University of La Laguna (ULL); as well as the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) and the Instituto de Astrofsica de Andalucia (IAA).

There is now evidence that the supermassive black holes at the centres of the majority of galaxies have a basic influence on their evolution. In some of them, the black hole is ingesting the material surrounding it at a very high rate, emitting a large quantity of energy. In those cases we say that the galaxy has an active nucleus (AGN). The material which feeds the AGN must initially be quite distant from the nucleus, in the disc of the galaxy, rotating around its centre. This gas must, one way or another, have been "braked" in order to fall into the central zone, a process known as loss of angular momentum.

"Studying the mechanisms which control the relation between the active nucleus and the rest of the galaxy -explains Ignacio del Moral Castro, a doctoral student in the IAC and the University of La Laguna (ULL) and first author of the article- is necessary to understand how these objects form and evolve, and to be able to throw light on this question we need to compare active and non-active galaxies. With this purpose, the main idea of my doctoral thesis is centred on the study and comparison of galaxies which are almost twin, but with the difference being nuclear activity".

The work has consisted of comparing the dynamics of the galactic discs of various active/non-active pairs. The researchers used data from the CALIFA survey (Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area). This contains spectroscopic data over complete 2D fields for more than 600 galaxies, taken at the Calar Alto Observatory in Almera, which allow observations of virtually the whole of each galaxy, so that its global characteristics can be studied.

Novel methodology

Previously, in the majority of studies the procedure used was the identification of a sample of active galaxies within a large survey, which were then compared to the rest of the galaxies in the survey having similar properties which do not show nuclear activity. However, this time, the researchers used a novel method: they performed one-to-one comparisons. Firstly, they identified active spiral galaxies in the CALIFA sample, and for each of them they looked for a non-active galaxy which had equivalent global properties, i.e. with the same mass, brightness, orientation and so on, and very similar in appearance.

Using this method the team put forward two scenarios to explain the dynamical differences between active and non-active galaxies. In the first, the explanation would be that it is the trace of the angular momentum transfer between the gas which has fallen into the centre and the material which remains in the disc. The second attributes the difference to the infall of gas from outside, via the capture of small nearby satellite galaxies, in which case, this capture should occur more frequently in the active galaxies. Both scenarios are compatible with this result and they are not mutually exclusive.

"The result surprised us; we really didn't expect to find this type of differences on a large scale, give that the duration of the active phase is very short in comparison with the lifetime of a galaxy, and with the time needed to produce morphological and dynamical changes", says Begoa Garca Lorenzo, and IAC researcher, and a coauthor of the article.

"Up to now we thought that all galaxies go through active phases during their lifetimes, but this result could mean that this is not the case, which would imply a major change to current models", adds Cristina Ramos Almeida, also an IAC researcher and coauthor of the article.

FO dismisses story on Wuhan lab conducting ‘covert operations’ in Pakistan as fake – DAWN.com

Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday dismissed a story published in an Australian news outlet on a Wuhan lab conducting alleged covert operations in Pakistan, calling it "politically motivated and fake".

"It is composed of distortion of facts and fabrications that quote anonymous sources," said a statement issued by the ministry, through the office of the Foreign Office spokesperson.

The Klaxon report, quoting unnamed "intelligence experts", claims Chinas Wuhan Institute of Virology has "set up operations in Pakistan as part of a broader offensive against India and Western rivals".

"The secret facility is allegedly making anthrax-like pathogens which could be used in biological warfare," the report published on July 23 alleges.

"There is nothing secret about the Bio-Safety Level-3 (BSL-3) Laboratory of Pakistan referred to in the report," said the statement by Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued today. "Pakistan has been sharing information about the facility with the States Parties to the Biological and Toxins Weapons Convention (BTWC) in its submission of Confidence Building Measures.

"The facility is meant for diagnostic and protective system improvement by Research and Development (R&D) on emerging health threats, surveillance and disease outbreak investigation.

"Pakistan strictly abides by its BTWC obligations and has been one of the most vocal supporters for a strong verification mechanism to ensure full compliance by the States Parties to the Convention."

"The attempt to cast aspersions about the facility is particularly absurd against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has highlighted the need for better preparedness in the areas of disease surveillance and control and international collaborations in that regard, consistent with Article X of BTWC," added the statement.

The Wuhan Institute of Virology came under scrutiny in April with the US probing whether the virus actually originated in the virology institute located in Chinas coronavirus epicentre with a high-security biosafety laboratory.

Chinese scientists have said the virus likely jumped from an animal to humans in a market that sold wildlife. But the existence of the facility has fuelled conspiracy theories that the germ spread from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, specifically its P4 laboratory which is equipped to handle dangerous viruses.

The director of the laboratory, Yuan Zhiming, had said that theres no way this virus came from us. None of his staff had been infected, he told the English-language state broadcaster CGTN, adding the whole institute is carrying out research in different areas related to the coronavirus.

They can then ask themselves: "What are the things I care the most about?" If you care the most about carbon footprint or animal rights. Often they are in alignment. The carbon and water footprints: The worst for the planet and for animals is cow milk. But then when you go to buy plant-based milk, you also want to look for flavor and sourcing footprint, because of course almonds require a lot more water than oats.

SE: Plant forward and mostly plant-based foods can be more sustainable than strictly plant-based. But then human health is also a factor and plant-based is healthier. We can only hold so much complexity in our heads at once. If you eat mostly whole foods and mostly foods from the ground, that can check a lot of boxes. Across the board that may be best in all categories.

SE: These third-party certifications, like the certified "organic" label, a lot of time they are referees of the transparency game. They help tick through the checklist we would not be able to even know about.

SE: There are important stickers to know, that have real meaning that helps you align with your values. USDA Organic is arguably one of the most rigorous standards of how food is grown. It supports an eco system and farm workers health and supports

USDA Organic Inhibits synthetic peticides and growth hormones and antibiotics. From an environmental standpoint that is significant.

But a lot of them are not standardized. Something can say "natural" and mean little. But "organic" does ensure that it is chemical-free when harvested. But that doesn't mean they can't add preservatives and more chemicals after it's harvested. A processed food product with the label USDA Organic just means that 95 percent of the sources are organic.

But in terms of the organic label, there is still the halo effect. Organic chocolate frosting is still organic chocolate frosting. So for health, you're getting a load of added sugar.

SE: The label Fair Trade is also meaningful.Fair for Life or Fair Trade Certified.These are truly meaningful for farm workers and harvesters. It ensures that no discrimination or harassment is taking place, no forced labor or child labor either. This has become a shocking problem for Cocoa production. In Africa, South America, the Ivory Coast and other places. Those certainly are not the only place. Fair Trademeans that it's monitored.Part of theprice of that item gets fed into local funds for infrastructure and jobs where the product or ingredients originated.

Where these certifications differ from one another, is how far along the spectrum they ensure a liveable wage for workers, versus a fair wage or a minimum wage. Fair for Life is the strongest. Look for that on bananas, coffee, chocolate, since those are three common ones.

SE: that is a good one, as is Bird-Friendly from the Smithsonian. This is specifically for coffee.It means that when coffee is grown in the tropics, it signals the homes of migratory birds are respected. And it ensures the coffee is grown in shade. So no trees needed to be cut down which takes away bird habitats. The less we disturb nature for farming the better.

Of all the crops grown worldwide, only about 1 percent are organic, which is shocking. For all the perceived consumer interest, "organic" only accounts for 1 percent of all growing.

There's a lot of different variables. It can take three years or more to transition to organic soil. But the other thing is that some farmers think the term organic does not even go far enough.

One term is Biodynamic from Demeter International Organization. They have certified "Biodynamic" which means at least 10 percent of the farmer's land is off-limits to growing, so it encourages biodiversity.

Another term to watch is "Regenerative." This is a big one. That's basically going to replace what we're doing now. Some people think we're going to skip straight to this "Regenerative" This is about soil and growing practicesand it's a way of growing that integrates with the surrounding ecosystemfor more biodiversity and more natural growing practices.

Biodynamic also promotes water conservation and treats wetlands grasslands and forests as part of the farm ecosystemso the farm is part of a larger ecosystem and natural landscape.

Farmers and ranchers have roles to play in being climate super heros. Improiving soil health and capturing carbon and creating best practices. This is something we need to encourage.

The "Regenerative" growing practice leaves the soil better than they found it. It depends on all the methods coming together to create a healthier earth. Some crops do this already. One that is really known for that is lentils. They are nitrogen fixers. Environmental super crops.

SE: It's not the case the shorter the distance, the better. The analysis includes the assessment of the total environmental footprint of a crop, and how people are treated in harvesting and packaging the food. Soall the methodstogether might be more important.

Transportation is just a fraction of the decision. Of course, farm to table is great. But there is nuance. Personally, when I am considering what to buy, my personal guidance is to better understand the methods andlook at transportation within that context.

Local news ecosystem is taking root in Northeast Ohio – Crain’s Cleveland Business

They're being called "local news ecosystems," and one is building in Northeast Ohio.

It's what philanthropies, civic activists and entrepreneurial journalists across the country see as the sprouting of mostly young and fragile organizations that are trying to bring news and information, usually online, to overlooked neighborhoods and communities. Many share content to spread their stories further, with a focus on bolstering, if not directly competing, with the work of struggling traditional print and broadcast media.

Northeast Ohio has already spawned several news operations, including the Observer group of community newspapers serving Lakewood and several other Cuyahoga County communities, and The Devil Strip in Akron.

One of the latest, and maybe the most ambitious, is The Land, which just launched its website. As planned, The Land would "deliver in-depth stories that foster accountability, inform the community and inspire people to take action," according to the crowdfunding proposal prepared by founder and editor Lee Chilcote and publisher Tammie Wise, both formerly associated with Freshwater Cleveland, a for-profit digital magazine owned by Detroit-based Issue Media Group.

The Land plans to cover all of Cleveland's neighborhoods and the city's inner ring of suburbs, eventually building a staff of six reporters to cover government, development, environment, education, health care and civic engagement.

"There's been a tremendous amount of growth in the nonprofit news sector in recent years," Chilcote said. "The nonprofit model will allow us a lot of ability to serve the community, have some earned income but have memberships and grants to fulfill our mission."

Chilcote said he and Wise were motivated by what they see as a "news crisis" in Northeast Ohio as traditional news organizations, particularly The Plain Dealer, have made significant cuts in news coverage.

This is not a Northeast Ohio phenomenon. Across the country, the decline or demise of newspapers has created so-called "news deserts" in many communities. At the same time, foundations and other philanthropies are beginning to see that local news is critical to maintaining healthy communities, especially in lower-income parts of cities.

Last year, the Cleveland and Knight foundations commissioned a study, "Northeast Ohio's Local News and Information Ecosystem," by two North Carolina consultants that was aimed at civic leaders. One of its key conclusions: "Whatever your primary issue of concern, your second issue should be media." It argued that local news engages citizens, improves public decision-making and makes political and civic leaders accountable to their communities. It also makes contributions to public health and political participation.

When participants in six focus groups were asked to talk about issues they were facing and how they stayed informed, they were critical of the existing media landscape. Said one participant: "I can find out where the trash is, or (about) an event over here. But what's really, really happening policy-wise coming from city hall, coming from my school board and that sort of thing? People are not really getting good quality information."

The study also found that the number of news gatherers in Cleveland was down 61% between 2004 and 2019. In Akron, that figure was down 54%.

Michael Murphy, chief marketing officer of the Cleveland Foundation, said that funding parts of the ecosystem makes sense to his and other organizations in the community. In December, the Cleveland Foundation and the Akron Community Foundation, the Center for Community Solutions, the George Gund Foundation and the Knight Foundation announced more than $110,000 in journalism grants to address community information needs in Akron and Cleveland.

"As a coalition of funders, we are starting to see news and information as the critical part of any community infrastructure," Murphy said. "If you don't have a healthy news and information ecosystem, you can't have a community that's thriving. Citizens need to be informed."

The Cleveland Foundation, for example, has funded a project on food insecurity in Cleveland developed by Black Girl Media, a blog and podcast collective; Edible Cleveland, a print and online magazine; and WOVU, a community radio station created by Burten, Bell, Carr Development Inc., the nonprofit community development corporation serving Cleveland's Central and Kinsman neighborhoods.

It also is sponsoring a one-year pilot of a program through Neighborhood Connections, a Cleveland nonprofit that boosts Cleveland neighborhoods, to pay Greater Clevelanders to document official committee meetings of Cuyahoga County and City of Cleveland governments. The program, Documenters.org, was created in Chicago by City Bureau, a nonprofit civic journalism lab.

"Residents in Cleveland, especially, felt that they don't feel represented at editorial meetings, that there is not someone that looks like them who is making decisions. There is a strong, strong sense of distrust," Murphy said. "They feel that even when there are stories of hope in their neighborhood, the traditional media rely on antiquated B-roll, or antiquated images, to even tell a story of good news."

One of the oldest parts of the building Northeast Ohio news ecosystem is the Observer group, a loosely connected group of for-profit and nonprofit news organizations started more than a decade ago as print monthlies or biweeklies that are considered "hyperlocal" because they focus on a single community, or closely linked communities. They cover schools heavily but also housing, libraries and city councils. Seven Observers, each separately owned, cover communities from Westlake and Parma to Collinwood and Euclid.

Bob Rosenbaum, advertising director of the Heights Observer, which covers Cleveland Heights and University Heights, said the Observers started as print publications and continue to have a strong print presence because its revenue comes from local advertisers who don't need or can't afford to reach the kind of audience that larger media reach.

"We're now in our 11th year, and we've been making it on advertising revenue almost exclusively. Ninety percent of our revenue is advertising," he said. "We've largely had year-on-year growth until this year. This year, everything is blown to the wind."

Rosenbaum said his organization does attract some foundation funding for specific projects, and it is a member, along with some of the other Observers, of the Neighborhood & Community Media Association of Greater Cleveland. That association's website posts stories from its 14 members, including the Plain Press, which covers Cleveland's West Side neighborhoods, and the Real Deal Press, which covers "the interplay of race, class and power in the civic, business and cultural spaces of Northeast Ohio."

The Devil Strip, a 5-year-old online and print news co-op in Akron that believes media are a city's "chief storyteller," sees its role as being an advocate for the city.

"I think the way we fit into the local news ecosystem is filling gaps that we see," said editor Chris Horne. "We're looking at more narrative, long-term, slow journalism. Part of it is, we don't have the ability to do the daily stuff."

Those gaps include looking at local arts, music, entrepreneurship and community leadership, and celebrating the people who make Akron a unique place as well as exploring the challenges that hold it back.

Horne said Devil Strip is getting 30,000 unique visitors a month. Before the pandemic hit, much of Devil Strip's revenue came from advertising. But it also is in the middle of a two-year, $200,000 grant from the Knight Foundation, and it has won a $50,000 grant from the GAR Foundation.

News organizations like these are cropping up all over the country. The Institute for Nonprofit News, a Los Angeles organization that is a hub where members can share best practices, pool resources and collaborate on stories, has more than 250 members including The Devil Strip and Belt magazine in Northeast Ohio.

Mangrove ecosystem in western Indian Ocean, comprising 10 African countries, is rapidly depleting

The mangrove ecosystem in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) comprising 10 African nations is rapidly getting depleted; some areas have reportedly lost asmuch as 88 per cent of the cover, according to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Conserving and restoring mangroves is essential and a nature-based solution is required to address adverse environmental, societal and climatic challenges in the region, according to the new UNEP guidelines on mangrove ecosystem restoration for the WIO region.

West Africa accounts for 31 per cent of the mangrove cover in the continent.

The threats

The UNEP status report stated that the ecosystem was under threat due to the increasing population, coastal development and poor governance.

Climate change poses a risk to the remaining mangrove areas, mainly through rising sea levels and increased sedimentation caused by precipitation and shoreline change. In fact, the future of mangroves is uncertain especially in the region, according to another report.

According to the Global Mangroves Alliance, 67 per cent of mangroves have been lost or degraded to date, and an additional one per cent being lost each year. Without mangroves, 39 per cent more people would face threat of floods annually and flood damage would increase by more than 16 per cent.

The guidelinescame a week after the high-level panel on ocean called for mangrove conservation and restoration. Every $1 invested in mangrove conservation and restoration generates a benefit of $3, estimated the panel.

Livelihoods of coastal communities depend on mangroves, and therefore, restoring mangroves could also contribute to building back better through green recovery after the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic ends, according to UNEP.

Mangroves also drive eco-tourism, create jobs; there is a need for an interaction between local communities and mangroves that is often ignored during formulation of mangrove restoration projects, the document pointed.

Mangroves are essential life support system for coastal communities in the WIO region, said James Kairo, chief scientist at the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute and lead author of the guidelines.

If degradation continues, communities will be without resources for shelter or fuel, food or a means to make a living, he added.

Restoring mangroves is possible but challenging

Restoring mangroves is possible but challenging, according to the UN show casing case studies on mangrove restoration projects from Kenya, United Republic of Tanzania, Mozambique, Madagascar, Mauritius and Seychelles.

Mangrove restoration can be used as a tool to return the lost forest in order to achieve the objectives of sustainable mangrove management, said the UN citing Kenyas experience.

Restoring mangroves is feasible as long as the questions of why, where, when, how and by whom are appropriately addressed, it added.

While analysing the challenges faced by the community-based mangrove restoration projects, the global UN organisation also enlisted the possible solutions:

Golden rules for identifying site for restoration

The UNEP document underlined the Golden Rules proposed by Enright and Wodehouse to be considered for restoration.

It stated that the degraded site should be accessible and devoid of strong waves. Planting should be restricted to vegetated areas where the forest has been degraded and lost.

Long-term monitoring

Lack of monitoring is one of the major reasons behind failures of most restoration projects, and hence, monitoring mangrove restoration projects is important, the UNEP said.

Rehabilitation of the degraded mangroves must be considered as a programme and not a short-term project, since the communities have to be engaged and empowered, it added.

UN recommended development of alternative income generating activities (IGAs) targeted at all mangrove users, including mangrove cutters.

Explore ecosystem services

At least$1.2 billion is the economic value of protection provided by coral reefs and mangroves in the WIO, according to WWF estimates.

Hence, ecotourism and payment for ecosystem services programmes should be explored, UN recommended, citing successful restoration of mangroves at Gazi bay, Kenya.

It is supposedly the worlds first conservation project that linked mangrove forests to the global carbon market. It was able to provide direct income to participating community from sale of carbon credits.

Most mangrove-restoration efforts have emphasized on planting as the primary tool for managing degraded areas, rather than first assessing causes for the degradation and then assessing the natural recovery opportunities, the UN noted.

But mangrove ecosystem is dynamic and the degraded mangrove areas may recover naturally. Natural recovery must be considered before initiating any mangrove planting activities, cautioned the UN document.

Ignore naysayers, the patent system is playing a vital role in the fight against covid-19 – IAM

Biotech and pharma patents have generated significant controversy in recent years, including in countries like the US and UK (see here and here). But the coronavirus pandemic has intensified worldwide scrutiny of life sciences innovators, their IP strategies and the patent system in general.

Many commentators (see here and here, for example) have expressed concerns that patents and other rights will impede research collaboration or will limit access to new covid-19 vaccines or treatments. These worries, if corroborated by events, could lead to a backlash against IP rights.

In recent months, national governments, international bodies and life sciences innovators have all been reacting to these concerns and seeking to adapt to new circumstances. Here are the four key things we have learned so far.

Compulsory licensing has historically been associated mainly with middle-income countries. However, given the seriousness of the current medical and economic crises, several high-income countries have raised the prospect of using legal mechanisms to circumvent IP rights covering coronavirus-related innovations.

While most countries have some form of compulsory licensing law in place, several have felt it necessary to take measures to sharpen these tools to overcome potential IP barriers to medical access. Canada, for example, passed Bill C-13 to allow its government to issue a licence without first negotiating with the rights holder and with greater flexibility over how the patentee is remunerated.

Germany also implemented legislation providing the Federal Ministry of Health with new powers to grant compulsory licences, while France has adopted sweeping measures allowing its Prime Minister to launch generic drugs prior to patent/SPC expiry and even to seize drugs from private companies.

None of this means that developed countries expect to have to use these provisions (although Israel has already made use of previously unused powers to grant a permit to import generic versions of AbbVies Kaletra) or that this readiness to circumvent IP rights will continue after the pandemic. But it shows that the US administrations view that patents are almost sacrosanct is not shared by other governments in high-income countries.

In the early stages of the pandemic, IP owners provoked public controversies by seeking or asserting exclusive rights to coronavirus-related innovations. Gilead, for example, applied for seven years orphan drug exclusivity for potential covid-19 treatment remdesivir.

But biotech and pharma rights holders came quickly to understand the need to depart from their usual IP strategies. Many have taken steps to promote wider and more affordable access to coronavirus-related innovations and to accelerate research efforts.

Gilead rescinded its request for regulatory exclusivity, promised to donate 1.5 million doses of the drug and subsequently entered into non-exclusive licences with five generic companies to increase the supply of remdesivir to 127 low-income countries. AbbVie announced it would not enforce its patents for covid-related uses of Kaletra, and Novartis, too, has committed to making any IP relating to the use of hydroxychloroquine available.

Oxford University has made its leading vaccine candidate available on the basis of non-exclusive IP licence for those wishing to sell it at-cost or at a small profit. Its partner AstraZeneca, which is striking deals to manufacture the vaccine for markets around the world, has pledged to make no profit. However, other vaccine innovators, like Pfizer and Moderna Therapeutics, have not ruled out making a profit.

Despite the above, hopes that life sciences innovators will voluntarily participate in initiatives, such as the WHO Covid-19 Technology Access Pool (C-TAP) or the Open COVID Pledge, aimed at promoting open-access licences to patents, data and other valuable IP are forlorn.

Research-based companies have advocated non-exclusive patent licensing, supported using the Medicines Patent Pool to license IP for use in lower-income countries and co-founded the WHO ACT-Accelerator for sharing covid-related scientific data.

But IFPMAs director general Thomas Cueni has said that: The pharmaceutical industry draws a line at an open-access platform to enforce worldwide open-licence agreements for covid-19 vaccines and treatments. That risks undermining a predictable IP system that underpins largescale R&D investment, he warned.

Innovators have rejected a one-size-fits-all model that assumes IP should be licensed the same way regardless of the nature of the product, the situation of the rights holder and whether the product is being sold into a wealthy or poor country. Companies wish to retain some control over the partners with which they collaborate and over the role IP will play in future innovations, Novartiss IP affairs chief Corey Salsberg told IAM recently.

Rights intended to confer monopolies risk obstructing access to medicines in certain circumstances. In a public health crisis of this magnitude it is reasonable for governments to ensure they have the ability to bypass patents if doing so is the only way to gain access to vital treatments. It is also imperative to consider how new forms of IP licensing or cooperation might better serve the interests of patients around the world (as HGFs Leena Contarino and Ellie Purnell do here).

But it is also important to challenge simplistic attacks on the IP-based innovation system (see here for a recent example), which overemphasise the significance of IP rights as a barrier to covid-19 treatment access and understate their contribution to the fight against the pandemic.

The most important problem we face is the lack of an approved covid-19 vaccine. But it is thanks in significant part to the incentives provided by IP rights that we have an innovation ecosystem capable of producing more than 160 experimental vaccines, 24 of which have already entered human trials. IP bolsters ongoing incentives for those involved in developing these candidates and can help delineate the partnerships needed as part of this effort.

Owners of leading inoculations and their partners are also currently investing significant sums of money in the manufacture of vaccine doses that might never be approved, partly because IP offers the prospect of recouping their costs. And it isnt obvious that an open-licensing approach would better enable the Oxford University/AstraZeneca vaccine, for example, to be produced at greater scale than the large number of bilateral agreements they have already entered.

Nevertheless, the benefits of IP are in a sense less visible than its downsides. Innovators should beware that if they are perceived to be charging too much for any coronavirus vaccine that comes on the market, steps may be taken to bypass their IP and perceptions of pharma patents in general will suffer.
