UM School of Medicines Institute of Human Virology Recruits Top HIV/AIDS Epidemiologist Shenghan Lai Along with Team of Researchers – Newswise

Gallo, MD, the Homer & Martha Gudelsky Distinguished Professor in Medicine, Co-founder and Director of the Institute of Human Virology (IHV) at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), and Man E. Charurat, PhD, MHS, Professor of Medicine, Director of the Division of Epidemiology & Prevention and CIHEB Global Director at the IHV, announced today that Shenghan Lai, MD, MPH and Hong Lai, PhD, MPH, in addition to three staff members, and two more to add, have joined the Institute of Human Virology. The faculty began their positions on April 1 with Professor and Associate Professor academic appointments in the UMSOMs Department of Epidemiology & Public Health.

Dr. Shenghan Lai was most recently Professor of Pathology, Radiology Epidemiology and Medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (JHM). He began his research in HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) in the late 1980s. His research interests include epidemiology, drug abuse, HIV/AIDS, STIs, prevention and intervention, cardiac imaging, preventive cardiology, medical consequences of HIV infection, and international health.

Dr. Hong Lai was most recently Associate Professor of Radiology at JHM. Since 2002, she has been the lead epidemiologist on five National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded studies investigating HIV/cocaine-associated comorbidities. These include coronary calcification, left ventricular regional dysfunction, the presence and development of coronary stenosis, coronary plaque progression and cognitive decline.

We are pleased to have Dr. Shenghan Lai and Dr. Hong Lai join the Institute, said Dr. Gallo, who is also Co-Founder and International Chairman of the Scientific Leadership Board of the Global Virus Network (GVN). Together, they will add depth to our Division of Epidemiology and Prevention and provide opportunities for cross-collaborations within the Institute.

The research team led by Dr. Lai has accomplished a lot, especially for Baltimore City, said Dr. Charurat. We are excited to have them continue scientific advancements here.

Dr. Shenghan Lai has been heavily involved in epidemiology and prevention of HIV infection in countries with greater HIV prevalence for more than 10 years. He has focused on high-risk groups such as intravenous drug users, sex workers, and men who engage in sex with other men. Dr. Lai is recognized as a leading epidemiology researcher in the infectious disease epidemiology, and world renowned for his research on the effects of HIV infection and cocaine use on sub-clinical cardiovascular disease. He is the principal investigator of several NIH-supported studies, focusing on HIV natural history and cardiovascular complications of HIV and drug abuse. Dr. Lai received his degrees from Peking Union Medical College in Beijing, China, and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. He has more than 250 peer-reviewed publications and numerous book chapters.

The Institute, led by Dr. Gallo, has a long history of serving the medically underserved African American population in Baltimore, said Dr. Shenghan Lai. We look forward to further exploring why HIV or other factors influence comorbidities among one of the poorest communities in this country. Our highest priority is to use science as a weapon to fight against health disparities and IHV is the best place for us to achieve our goals.

Dr. Hong Lai is the lead author of several publications demonstrating that the use of cocaine promotes subclinical coronary atherosclerosis in users with HIV infection. Further, she identified that reduced cocaine use with a cash-based incentive intervention was significantly associated with a lowered endothelin-1, endothelial marker, and reduced coronary plaque burden in chronic cocaine users with existing coronary plaques.

In addition to growing our cardiovascular research, we look forward to expanding our studies in two new areas., said Dr. Hong Lai. These include improving our understanding of how HIV, drug abuse - especially opioid - and other factors exacerbate cognitive decline among underserved population in Baltimore and reducing health disparities among Baltimores African American population.

With more than 100 publications, Dr. Hong Lais key contribution to science includes the first report that vitamin D deficiency is associated with hidden heart disease among underserved African Americans with HIV infection.

These new faculty members will provide crucial expertise in HIV to help us strengthen our departmental programs in infection control and in health disparities and population health, said Jay Magaziner, PhD, MSHyg, Professor and Chair of the Department Epidemiology & Public Health.

MedMentors On Call aims to provide guidance for premed students – Binghamton University Pipe Dream

As a child of first-generation immigrants, Teri Lam, 17, did not know any physicians or medical students to connect with. Now, by co-founding MedMentors On Call, she aims to connect students in similar positions.

MedMentors On Call is an organization aimed at connecting the medical community by offering services from current medical students such as essay polishing, mock interviews, individualized office hours and more. Lam said stories like hers are not rare, and she is motivated to ensure guidance for medical school applicants.

I have always sought for a community of peers who can encourage and motivate me along my career, Lam wrote in an email. At Binghamton [University], I found that the study resources and mentors who have trekked a similar road were invaluable to my professional and personal growth. In building this company with my co-founder, our mission was to create a platform of guidance and connect premedical students with current medical students with the goal of strengthening the health community.

In addition to such services, MedMentors On Call has launched a seminar series that offers advice about the medical school application process to a larger, national audience. Lam said this has been especially helpful for students because it emphasizes teamwork in the premedical journey which is often perceived as a path one must take alone.

Its hard to find ways to distinguish oneself among other premedical students and sometimes, its even more difficult finding mentors, Lam said. My partner, Sharon [Lam] and I started MedMentors On Call so that students can receive help from current medical students who have recently undergone the medical school process, and, together, we can create a community of professionals helping each other.

Madison Pellnat, a junior majoring in integrative neuroscience, said she has felt this lack of solidarity within BUs premedical community.

I am honored to be able to pursue the premed track at [BU], however, at times it has been an unorganized and difficult field of study, Pellnat said. There is a whole narrative for premed students that professors have to get rid of the weak by making classes so hard that only some get good enough grades for medical school. I find that this outlook really rules out a lot of great and hardworking students and, instead of providing them with the correct tools to utilize to do well in their classes, oftentimes the students are left behind feeling inadequate.

Pellnat believes that MedMentors On Call would be helpful for all premedical students.

Oftentimes we spend so much time studying, that it is difficult to seek out these opportunities on our own, Pellnat said. Furthermore, there are rarely any occasions in which we could candidly talk to doctors about their experiences throughout undergraduate and medical school, which could be immensely inspiring to young premed students. I believe that forming this relationship can strengthen connections for future job opportunities and career advice.

By helping students find their voices, Lam said she hopes that students will gain insight into medical school and see medical school as a clear, attainable goal.

Premedical students volunteer at clinics for countless hours, conduct research even on the weekends and study all night for exams, Lam wrote. All of this boils down to an application, so these few essays must represent who they are as a person, what their motivation for medicine is and what they foresee their future may be like. This is hefty job. With our guidance, we hope that we are able to guide students to dig deeper into the sources of their values and motivation and write something that they are proud of. Confidence will come along with it.

Melanie Etti: The A levels fiasco is part of a wider picture of inequality in medical school recruitment – The BMJ – The BMJ

This years A levels debacle is fresh proof that more needs to be done to widen access to medicine, says Melanie Etti

The initial release of A level grades this year resulted in widespread uproar as almost 40% of students across England saw their predicted results downgraded, causing many to miss out on their places at university. Their final grades had been calculated from their predicted grades using a new algorithmits flaws soon became glaringly apparent. The algorithm favoured students who studied in smaller cohorts and who were from historically high performing schools, meaning the downgrading was inordinately skewed towards students who attended larger, state funded schools.

Among the reports of students who were adversely affected by this downgrading, there was a disappointingly high number of students who had lost out on their places at medical school. Many of the students I saw telling their story were from lower performing schools, less advantaged socioeconomic backgrounds, and of Black or minority ethnic heritagea sad yet unsurprising outcome to say the least.

The government has since backtracked on their decision to use this algorithm in the allocation of A level grades. Nevertheless, the fallout from this initial act has been profound and, in many ways, this years debacle has only forced into clearer view the inequalities that many students from disadvantaged backgrounds face every year in trying to gain a place at medical school.

The lack of diversity in medical school recruitment has long been recognised and documented, with last years annual report by the Medical Schools Council Selection Alliance revealing the extent of the persisting inequalities in the UK. In 2017, just 120 medical school entrants were from households with at least one parent in a lower supervisory and technical occupation, a figure that remained largely static over the preceding decade. While the number of entrants from Black and minority ethnic groups has increased overall, students of Black heritage continue to be under-represented among both standard and graduate entry medical school recruits.

As the child of African migrants, I understand and have experienced firsthand the challenges that many Black students face when applying to medicine, and how feelings of impostor syndrome can develop from being underestimated by those around you. The opportunity to take my A level exams in many ways felt redemptive, and allowed me to prove myself, independently of my circumstances. Sadly, this opportunity was not afforded to A level students this year, meaning their futures hinged almost entirely on estimations of their capability made by others.

Organisations such as IntoUniversity, Generation Medics, and the National Medical Schools Widening Participation Forum have been instrumental in responding to these disparities, providing much needed assistance to students from various social circumstances in their pursuit of a place at medical school. The BMA has also launched a number of initiatives to widen participation in medicine, including the BMA aspiring doctors programme. Many medical schools have also committed to increasing access to medicine by providing foundation years and widening their entry criteria to include the successful completion of an access course. The use of the algorithm in the initial allocation of this years A level grades undermined the efforts of these organisations, essentially building back up the barriers that they strive to overcome and reversing vital work done throughout the year.

While there is often pushback against the notion of introducing quotas to medical school recruitment, I would argue that the outcome of this years A level grade allocation demonstrates exactly why quotas are not only justified, but necessary. One of the main arguments against them is that they would allow disadvantaged students who are not deserving of a place at medical school access to one. Yet the government was complicit in implementing a system that produced the exact opposite outcome.

It therefore seems illogical to view the introduction of quotas as discriminatory when they are merely compensating for an imbalance that already exists. Formalising medical schools recruitment targets for students from underprivileged backgrounds would go some way to mitigating the limitations that their circumstances can impose on their ability to reach their full potential.

The events that unfolded this summer also signify the need for the government to increase their involvement in widening participation schemes. The government cannot hope to improve access to medicine if they are not at least partially invested in the ongoing efforts towards this goal. It is important that we begin to hold them accountable for ensuring that the tools for upwards social mobility are available to those who need them most. The initiatives required to enable these students a real chance at successfully entering medical school must be implemented during their school years, and only the government, through the Department for Education, have sufficient oversight over the state funded education system to be able to realise such a vision.

For many students this year, the glass ceiling was held very firmly in place by a system that purported to be rooted in meritocracy, but instead favoured those in positions of privilege. This may have a lasting effect on their self-esteem, reaffirming any budding feelings of impostor syndrome that might have already started to develop. While the government has announced that they are lifting the national cap on medical school places, many of those who have now fulfilled their grade requirements will still likely see their entry to medical school deferred until next year. This could mean that the effects of this flawed judgment last for years to come.

A vast chasm already separates many disadvantaged school students from a chance of attending medical school. It is imperative that the government begin to put corrective systems in place in order to prevent it from widening any further.

Virtual medical appointments are more common since the coronavirus pandemic began. But without physical exams, doctors may miss certain diagnoses and miss out on building relationships with patients.

Despite a foothold in medicine that predates Hippocrates himself, the traditional physical exam might be on the verge of extinction. The coronavirus crisis has driven more routine medical appointments online, accelerating a trend toward telemedicine that has already been underway.

This worries Dr. Paul Hyman, author of a recently published essay in JAMA Internal Medicine, who reflects on what's lost when physicians see their patients almost exclusively through a screen.

A primary care physician in Maine, Hyman acknowledges he'd already begun second-guessing routine physicals on healthy patients as insurance requirements pushed doctors away from them.

But while Hyman is now providing mostly telemedicine, like many doctors during the pandemic, he writes that he has gained a clearer sense of the value of the age-old practice of examining patients in person. He notes the ability to offer reassurance, be present for his patients and find personal fulfillment as a doctor.

"I think there's something therapeutic about seeing a physician and having them lay their hands on you, and my sense from the feedback I've gotten from the article already is that a lot of people agree that it's therapeutic in its own right and that can be lost without the physical exam," Hyman told NPR.

Hyman spoke with NPR about his experience adjusting to a new world of medicine, one that eases access to health care providers yet has the potential to erode basic human connection.

This interview has been edited for clarity and length.

How has the sudden shift toward mostly virtual visits changed the way you practice medicine?

It's changing almost week to week as I go through and learn, then try to understand what the virtual visit is providing and what it's not providing. It's kind of a learning experiment in real time. In some ways, I am more cautious because I am not sure what I am missing from not seeing the patient in person. And so I try to think through what I would have gained from the physical exam. And if there is enough of a concern about that, then I will advocate for the patient to be examined.

It does give me, for some patients, a lot of insight into the way they live their lives and what their home or work environment is like, which can help me understand more about where their health concerns fit into their overall priorities. I think it's helped me connect with patients in different ways.

What are some things that are much easier to catch through a physical exam or might be missed using telehealth?

We don't really completely understand sometimes what we're missing because we haven't really done medicine this way. I give the example of a patient whose heart is not working as well, and that's causing fluid buildup in their body. For that specific patient, it would have been challenging to make the diagnosis over the video or a phone; it takes touching the patient, being able to listen to their heart, legs, look at their blood pressure and look at the veins in their neck to make that diagnosis.

Another one that I often worry about is dizziness. People can feel dizzy for many reasons. Some of them are very common and not concerning, but occasionally the reason is serious. It's very hard to distinguish some of those reasons on a video trying to walk a patient through an exam.

Beyond the obvious potential for missing a diagnosis, what else is lost in the doctor-patient relationship when you can't do physical exams?

I have to agree with [Abraham Verghese's] description of a ritual, that there's something about coming into the office and going through a history and being examined and that ritual provides real comfort and meaning to both a physician and to the patient.

I mentioned in the article, too, that the exam is an objective piece of data. The patient has a narrative of their illness that the physician is trying to understand to help them feel better, but then the patient may think one thing is going on and the physician may think another. The exam can really be helpful as a piece of science or data that helps clarify what should happen next.

Especially in our world of electronic health records and a lot of other things that can be very distracting, it's that moment in time when the physician is fully present. And I think that can be really supportive, meaningful and important.

You mentioned in the essay that one of the primary roles of a physician is listening to the patient. Are there instances where a virtual visit provides a better environment for doing that?

I think there are, if the patient is fully present during the visit. Sometimes patients can be distracted, doing other things. But there are opportunities in the virtual visit to actually really connect and listen without some of the distractions of a busy office and an exam room. We still have to remember that most of what we're going to learn about a patient's illness is going to be through listening to them.

Insurance providers and volume-based metrics have already reduced the frequency of performing routine physical exams on healthy patients. Has the business of medicine already started to devalue a doctor's touch?

I think what is devalued is humanistic interaction between a patient and a physician development of a relationship and good listening. The way billing codes have worked for primary care, you could put down parts of your physical exam, so it wasn't being completely devalued. But I think it is devaluing to patients to request doctors do visits so quickly. More time is needed, as physicians, to listen to our patients and develop relationships, to think critically about them.

Less time with patients seems to be the enemy for doctors, both virtually and in person.

Yeah, time is the most critical part. And we're just getting less and less of it. I just got an email from a doctor, a pediatric specialist, about how he always does a very complete physical exam because he needs, as we've learned in medical school, to take a step back, think about the big picture and not miss something. That mindset is not valued in the current situation.

You anticipated some wearable technologies that might give more objective information about patients during virtual visits in the future. Are you worried technology may replace the physical exam?

I think there's tremendous benefit to some of the wearable technologies, but I think that society is going to need people to interpret what the wearable technology is telling you. But, we're primary care physicians, we're detectives and we still follow the rules of "when in doubt, examine the patient," right? Right. So a lot of times where I see a patient, when it's not clear what is going on and I'm trying to figure [it] out, I put all these puzzle pieces together.

I think that [the physical exam is] a skill and a tool. I still agree it's a core and fundamental part of being a physician. This isn't, you know, the end to our identity as physicians. I think that we need to evolve. As our data evolves and technology evolves, we need to evolve with it. But we just can't leave it fully behind.

Black Health Matters: New Surgeon at SSM Health Seeks to Raise the Standard of Care for Women of Color – St. Louis American

Diversity and inclusion to me means that everyone out there has the same access to health care and the same quality of health care, not just health care, said Dr. Jovita Oruwari, an oncologic breast surgeon at SSM Health DePaul Hospital.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, black women and white women get breast cancer at about the same rate, but black women die from breast cancer at a higher rate than white women a rate of about 40 percent higher. In her new role as an oncologic breast surgeon at SSM Health DePaul Hospital, Dr. Jovita Oruwari seeks to reverse this statistic. Diversity and inclusion to me means that everyone out there has the same access to health care and the same quality of health care, not just health care, said Oruwari, who began her new role on September 1. Its got to be quality of care. Everyone deserves that because everyones health matters. Its really about access.

To do this, sometimes it means bringing health care to areas where it can be easily accessible to those in need or bringing people to health care facilities.

We need to try to do things to be able to achieve equitable health care, Oruwari said.

Its so important because as for people of color and breast cancer, we know that the rates of breast cancer are higher in white women, but when black women do get breast cancer, we are more likely to die from the disease. This shouldnt be so.

Reasons for this disparity are varied. Sometimes, black women present symptoms later than other racial groups. Other times, black women seek treatment later, Oruwari said.

We need to find a way to bridge that gap (in order) to make health care available so that we can decrease those mortality numbers, she said.

Female physicians of color are rare. African-American doctors who actively practice medicine make up only 5 percent of the total number of physicians in the United States, according to a 2018 self-reported survey by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Data documenting the number of African-American women who are breast surgeons was unavailable by press time. However, according to a 2013 Women Physician Workforce data chart from the AAMC, black women made up 7 percent of active physicians in the U.S. workforce. Currently, the American Society of BreastSurgeons (ASBS) has a membership of 2,950 in the U.S. workforce, according to ASBS personnel.

Oruwari, discovered the idea of becoming a breast surgeon during her residency. I was fortunate enough during my residency to rotate and work with a female surgeon who did breast surgery, and that had a profound effect on me, Oruwari said. At the time, Oruwari didnt know that becoming a breast surgeon was a career path available to her.

I went to medical school under the premise of wanting to be a doctor so that I could help people, and I wanted specifically to be a gynecologist because I was a woman, and thats what we did.

And then, somewhere towards the end of medical school, I happened to go through my general surgery rotation and I loved it! I loved being in the operating room. I loved holding a scalpel in my hand. I loved opening up the body and curing illnesses and diseases. It was just really fascinating to me. Just being in the operating room, to me, felt like home.

Also, at the time, breast surgery wasnt a specialty. The female physician who Oruwari shadowed had been performing breast surgery for years, Oruwari said.

She was really a pioneer, Oruwari said. As a woman doing breast surgery, I loved the way she interacted with her patients.

While the discovery of becoming an oncological breast surgeon fascinated Oruwari, she said the micro aggressions she faced during her residency were challenging.

I was told, Maybe you should do a different specialty than this, Oruwari said. A lot of times, as a person of color going through training, your mind is really numb to everything that you go through because the goal is to get through it. So, a lot of those things (micro aggressions), I really didnt think about until recently.

It took her ten years to go back and visit the hospital where she trained because of the stress and not wanting to be reminded of discrimination. During that time, she said, you wonder whether or not youve experienced racism or sexism. Looking back, Oruwari said she had the support of family, medical school staff and colleagues.

Oruwari is a native of Imo State, Nigeria, and moved to the United States with her family when she was 11. She grew up on the East Coast in New Jersey and New York. She then completed medical school at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)-University Hospital, a residency at UMDNJ-University Hospital and a fellowship in surgical breast oncology at Brown University Women and Infants Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island. The St. Louis Cancer and Breast Institute recruited her in 2001.

Oruwari hopes her presence at SSM Health DePaul Hospital will encourage more black women to seek regular checkups, as well as seek follow-up treatment earlier if they suspect or discover a problem.

Representation matters, she said. Im hoping that my being there as a person of color will give me more visibility to (black women) and that they know I am there for them.

Im going to be a part of their breast wellness and get them that next level of care that they may not have had.

Oruwari said she also hopes that through her representation she will encourage more black youth to consider a career in medicine and offered some advice.

Do a lot of research in medicine, and look at different medical specialties, she said. Volunteer at a hospital to make sure that you like it. Expose yourself to different doctors and shadow physicians in both offices and surgery.

While youth will need to wait until high school to visit hospitals, Oruwari encourages students to start thinking of careers early.

I think that when careers are talked about to kids, its got to start young, in elementary school. Make medicine an option. Kids need to see physicians that look like them. This is only a beginning.

Both have graciously hosted the annual Marshall Medical School fun- draiser, Standing Out In Our Field, for the last six years and will continue to in 2021 due to the pandemic.

Dr. Michael Winkler says you cant predict the future, but he thinks the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University is on its way to being one of the top medical schools in the country and he plans to be a major part of that.

The new chief of cardiology and thoracic radiology plans to enhance the use of 3D and 4D images that show patients what their issues are instead of using flat images on a screen. The images help to better explain medical complications and upcoming procedures to patients who might only have a high school education, he said.

"If they have, for example, a congenital heart defect, we can show them the part that is healthy and the part that isnt," he said. "That gives them empowerment."

Those images will also help medical students and surgeons as they prepare for procedures.

Winkler hopes to continue to expand the free lung cancer screenings at the hospital. Annual screenings are recommended for asymptomatic adults age 55 to 80 who have a 30-pack per year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit smoking within the past 15 years.

With 150,000 Americans dying of lung and bronchial cancer each year, the screenings could save lives. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force found that annual screening for lung cancer in high-risk patients can prevent a substantial number of lung cancer-related deaths. In 2017, Georgia had 6,929 cases of lung and bronchial cancer.

"Its a powerful tool and tremendous value," Winkler said.

Winkler comes to AU from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and UK Health, where he was an associate professor and director of UK Healths Gill Heart Institute International Research and Education Fellowship in Cardiovascular Imaging. His primary reason for choosing to come to AU was Dean David Hesss vision for the medical school and the new facilities and integration at the university.

"Augusta University is on the cusp of becoming a nationally known powerhouse, and because it has medical and dental it will be quickly on par with Georgia Tech and Emory," he said.

Lack of sleep can lead to several mental and physical health problems, including depression, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity, highlighting the importance of getting a sufficient amount of shut-eye.

With this in mind, we decided to dig a little deeper into the world of sleep this month. We explored the science behind slumber and provided you with further information and resources to help you get a good nights sleep.

Impossible Foods CEO on finding meat’s magical ingredient, pitching VCs and convincing meat-loving chefs to serve a vegan burger – CNBC

In 2011, at the age of 57, Stanford biochemistry professor Pat Brown took a leap faith and quit his job to launch plant-based "meat" company Impossible Foods. He did it because wanted to help solve one of the world's biggest problems before he retired.

"The use of animals as a technology in food production is, by a huge margin, the most destructive technology on earth in the history of our species," Brown tells CNBC Make It.

Today, Impossible Foods, best known for its juicy, meat-tasting vegan burger, is valued at more than $4 billion. Its burgers are served in more than 17,000 restaurants worldwide, including via partnership deals withBurger King, White Castle and Starbucks. It's also sold in8,000 grocery stores,

Here, Brown talks withCNBC Make It about his life before Impossible Foods, his first investor pitch meeting and where he sees the brand going. The interview has been edited together for length and clarity.

CNBC Make It: Today, you are the founder of Impossible Foods. But talk to me about life before Impossible Foods.

Pat Brown: I grew up assuming that I ever did about 50% of my childhood was in the Washington, D.C. suburbs and the other 50% was split in Paris [France] and in Taipei [Taiwan]. And I wasn't a very good student. I was capable, but I had very little interest in school. Fortunately, when it was time for me to go to college [in the 1980s], it was a time when the fraction of people who tried to go to college was a lot lower. So I was able to get into the University of Chicago, which is where I went for undergrad and then I stayed there for my M.D. and Ph.D. [in biochemistry].

I wanted to have more of tangible impact on the world ... so I decided to go into biomedical research. And then I did a pediatrics residency, so I spent three years as a pediatrician in Chicago, at Children's Memorial Hospital. I'd have a 36-hour non-stop day. But I loved it because you felt every moment like you were helping people.

Let's move forward to 2009. You were 57 and a professor at Stanford Medicine, Stanford University's medical school, and you took a sabbatical. How did that lead to the creation of Impossible Foods?

I used the [sabbatical] to try to figure out, what's the most important problem in the world is that I might be able to contribute to solving? The use of animals as a technology in food production is, by a huge margin, the most destructive technology on Earth in the history of our species. And once I realized that, it was a no-brainer.

Relatively quickly it became clear that you are not going to solve the [meat consumption] problem by regulation, education or trying to persuade people. Even most environmentalists that go to climate and environmental conferences are eating steak for dinner. They're not going to stop eating foods that are a big source of pleasure in their daily lives.

So that meant that the only way to solve the problem is to understand what consumers love about these foods and do a better job of delivering it than the current industry does. That means competing in the marketplace and pulling the economic rug out from under that industry. I had to start a company to make those changes and that's why I founded Impossible Foods.

What was your first pitch to get funding for Impossible Foods like?

You can't walk a block in Palo Alto [California, where Stanford is located] without tripping over a venture capitalist. I went to talk to three of the big VC firms but I was naive about what drives venture investors. It's not the same thing that drives me, it turns out.

The message that really snapped them to attention is that the there was, at that time, a $1.5 trillion global market being served by a technology [meat production] that has fundamentally not been improved since prehistoric times. And it's just waiting to be taken down by better technology.

But that was kind of like my last [pitch deck] slide. Now, I am much more upfront about this, saying that is a humongous prize for whoever can develop the technology to replace animals in the food system.

How did you create the Impossible Burger?

The premise was this is a scientific problem. We needed to understand in molecular detail how meat works.

From a nutritional standpoint, the problem was already solved [by plant-based] protein. Just to put it in perspective, the global soybean crop occupies .8% of Earth's land area and produces 150% as much protein as in all the meat consumed globally. And it uses way less fertilizer, pesticides and water than the animal agriculture industry. And it's cheaper by far.

The unsolved problem is deliciousness. So we had to study: What makes meat delicious?

We hired molecular biologists, biochemist, biophysicist and basic scientists because the the problem was not making food. It was understanding how this particular food works to create those emergent properties that people crave. So, they got started working on understanding what makes meat delicious.

And how did you find the magic ingredient, heme?

When you cook meat some kind of magical happens there's an explosion of aroma and it's flavor profile becomes completely different. When you have an explosion of chemical activity like that, to me that suggests that there was a catalyst in there.

What I knew was that heme besides being the molecule that carries oxygen in your blood making it red is one of the best catalysts in nature. And it's staring right at you, because it's responsible for the red or pink color of meat. So, it's just screamingly obvious.

You can basically take vegetable broth but if you throw in heme, it tastes like meat.

When you first introduced Impossible Burger, why did you market it to restaurants as opposed to consumers?

We debuted it with a handful of world renowned, uncompromising chefs, the first of which was Dave Chang, who once made a big splash by banning on principle every vegetarian item from his menu. So this guy is a meat guy to the bone, and the perfect person for us to launch with. Someone like Dave Chang, Traci Des Jardins, Brad Farmer and Chris Cosentino, these very meat-focused chefs, wanted it on their menus. So you would be insane not to take advantage of that.

Where do you see Impossible Foods going?

I think last year we increased our sales by about threefold. This year, it's very likely to be more than twofold. In order to achieve our mission[to eliminate the need to make food from animals], we have to grow on average about twofold every year for the next 15 years.

More than 90% of the people who ever want impossible burger are current meat eaters. We need to convince them to try [Impossible Burger]. Once we do that, I think we're in.

Two UGA professors named to National Academy of Inventors – WGAU

The National Academy of Inventors has named two University of Georgia faculty members to the 2020 class of NAI Senior Members.

Richard Meagher, Distinguished Research Professor of Genetics, and Ronald Orlando, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, and chemistry, are the first UGA researchers to receive the senior membership distinction. They join a new class of 38 prolific inventors representing 24 research universities along with government and nonprofit research institutes worldwide.

Meagher has dedicated nearly five decades to performing pioneering research across several diverse biotechnology disciplines, including plant molecular genetics, monoclonal antibody development and epigenetics. His research contributions at UGA have led to 58 invention disclosures, eight issued U.S. patents and one pending U.S. application. Hes also co-founded four biotechnology companies based on these technologies. One company, Abeome, is developing therapeutic antibodies against inflammatory and other diseases. Meagher received the UGA Inventors Award in 2004 and the UGA Entrepreneurs Award in 2017.

Consistent encouragement by my colleagues and the creative environment at UGA have been essential to this recognition by NAI and much of my success as an inventor and entrepreneur, said Meagher.

Orlando joined the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center in 1993 and leads a prominent research group dedicated to glycobiology and biochemistry. He holds two U.S. patents and four pending patent applications and has appeared as an inventor on 17 invention disclosures ranging from software to novel compounds and methods of analysis. Orlando has launched three startup companies based on UGA-licensed technology that have raised more than $7.8 million in funding and launched 57 new products. He serves as CEO of GlycoScientific, an Innovation Gateway resident company developing research tools and potential therapeutic antibodies for cancer, and was the inaugural recipient of the UGA Entrepreneurs Award in 2010.

I am deeply honored to have been elected as a senior member of the National Academy of Inventors, but I am not the only person deserving recognition for this honor, Orlando said. Innovation Gateway provided the guidance and infrastructure I needed to move my research into the marketplace.

Edgar Cahoon: ‘There is still so much basic knowledge to learn’ – Chemistry World

Edgar Cahoon is a biochemistry professor and director of the Center for Plant Science Innovation at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln (UNL). His research group conducts basic and applied research on plant lipid metabolism that aims to enhance the nutritional and industrial value of crop plants.

I grew up in Eastern Virginia in the US on a dairy farm. My father had passed away, and my mother got remarried when I was about five years old to a dairy farmer. Later, we went to growing crops soybean and corn and I really developed an interest in plants. I was fascinated by all the chemical diversity that you can see in them.

I wanted to be a scientist. I was just curious about how things work, and I guess science is what you naturally gravitate to when you are that way.

At university, I started out in horticulture, but realised that didnt tell me anything about what I wanted to know, which was how plants work. So, I switched to biochemistry and have been doing plant biochemistry ever since.

My first car was a 1980 Chevrolet Citation, and I got it when I was a sophomore in college at Virginia Tech. I did a cooperative education programme and worked at the Food and Drug Administration in Washington, DC. I needed the car to commute I was part of a carpool and had to drive people around. So yeah, I drove five big men in a little Chevrolet Citation.

I have moved around a lot in my career. I started out working at a large company, after my postdoc. When Ive changed jobs its not because I wasnt performing well, I just wanted more of a challenge and more freedom in my science. It took a lot of courage to make these moves that ended up with me being at a university, but I am happy I did that. Maybe the hardest thing Ive done is to take risks when trying to find a situation that I was most happy with for my career.

In industry, you have to learn how to not be an egomaniac. Youve got to be able to work in teams, and this is quite useful for going to a university. My colleagues who havent been in industry sometimes have a different perception about how they share resources and so forth. Industry is collaborative typically you dont do a project on your own.

I garden a lot, I enjoy that. In the summertime, the tomatoes and cucumbers that we eat are almost all from our garden. But then, during the wintertime and other parts of the year when the garden isnt growing anything , we buy our produce from the grocery store.

I also do a lot of road biking going long distances on the bike. Nebraska is quite nice for that, we have a lot of backroads where the traffic is not so heavy. You can see the countryside on a bicycle, and get some exercise and fresh air. I am part of a cycling club, and they have a 60-mile ride that is not competitive.

We still have so much basic information to learn about how a cell works

Being at UNL, you have to like Cornhusker football [the universitys American football team]. We all keep up with that. There is a lot of local interest in seeing what the team is going to be like for the fall. There is worry that there wont be football this fall.

A coffee shop is my favourite place to think and get work done. I like being away from people and distractions like television, and just focusing on what I do. Sometimes at coffee shops you can also overhear other peoples conversations, and it can be quite good entertainment.

I like to think that I am doing synthetic biology, but I realise that we dont really know what were doing in many cases. We still have so much basic information to learn about how a cell works before we can ever be able to really predictively manipulate it. We talk about synthetic biology that someday we will be able to sit at a computer and have all of this omics data in hand and just dial-in whatever change we want to make but there is still so much basic knowledge to learn.

There maybe is a feeling among the broader scientific community that we have learned everything there is to know on a basic level that we can now just go in and very carefully manipulate things. But we will need to have a major focus on foundational basic research rather than making this huge leap towards translation. We cant lose sight of the importance of foundational research.

‘I’m definitely disappointed:’ incoming freshmen face new set of challenges for the fall | The Retriever – The Retriever

The freshman experience at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County usually includes the bonfire, Involvement Fest, kickbacks in dorms and D-Hall trips. But for this years class of incoming freshmen, many of whom lost part of high school, everything is different now socially-distanced, hybrid or online.

Roshnee Roberts, a biological sciences major and psychology minor, knew March 13 was going to be her last day of high school. Her track season cut short, her plans to speak at graduation cancelled, senior activities and hanging out with friends suddenly not allowed, and her life radically altered.

This fall, shell be attending UMBC from her home, opting not to live on campus. Unfortunately, I was really hoping [that I would be living] on campus. But you know, the way money is set up [its] not happening, which is totally fine, she said.

She was excited to get a placement in a lab, but shes still not sure if shell be able to even go on campus, Roberts said. Everyone else gets to experience all the fun senior activities and I didnt. Now, Im also missing out on freshman year, which is probably the best year, because youre meeting everyone [for the first time], she said.

It leaves her wondering what the future will look like when shes finally able to be on campus under more typical circumstances. Am I going to feel like a freshman? Because everyone else is going to know the [campus], said Roberts.

Luckily, Roberts was able to earn a full scholarship through the Dawg Days: Jumpstart Scholarship to take online classes this summer. Im taking a summer class right now, completely free of cost, which is very exciting, she said. Im taking Math 105, just to get my math credit out of the way.

Computer engineering major Kwadwo Ansah Baah, who lives in Baltimore, is also taking a math credit to get ahead with the help of the Jumpstart Scholarship, and while its not exactly what he had envisioned for his summer, he really likes his professor and class. We all crack jokes to lighten the mood. Im getting to know other people. The Jumpstart Scholarship community is great. We have game nights and everything too, he said.

His outlook is mostly positive, even faced with the adversity of missing out on some activities, hes choosing to look at the situation realistically. I was looking forward [to campus life], but [its] all right. I really understand the way the world is at this moment, he said.

While taking classes from home, his parents have been supportive throughout, giving him the space he needs to complete his schoolwork uninterrupted. My mom and dad understand that this is very important for me. When Im having classes, theyll text me rather than barge into my room, Ansah Baah said, laughing.

His sense of humor hasnt been diminished by the situation at hand, either. He doesnt plan to let the virtual classes stop him from meeting other people or from making others laugh. I believe I can still have the UMBC experience. I still crack jokes [in Zoom or Google Meet] as if you were in an in-person class. I know this pandemic is not going to go on forever, he said.

For others, the pandemic has made them reevaluate what the future looks like. Sarah Nove, an English major, originally thought she wanted to be a journalist while she was working at her high school paper, but when the pandemic hit and the news became more stressful, she had to start turning it off for her mental health. I will say that COVID definitely impacted my ideas, and what I want to be when I grow up and what Im interested in, she explained. And while she still loves editing, shes not sure that being a full-time journalist is the job for her.

When school went virtual in March, her high school newspaper training was turned upside down. I was in charge of training pretty much everybody with the help of some of the section editors. I felt bad on one hand for not being able to pass along the skills that people passed along to me. It was hard for me to feel like I was letting them down but also knowing I couldnt do anything about it, Nove said.

Though beach week wasnt on the docket for Nove, she had plans with her mom to visit Paris and Austria, something that they had been wanting to do for a long time. And thankfully, were pretty confident that well be able to make it work at some point but going on this trip before you become a college student, and have all the responsibilities of college on your plate, it did suck to miss out on that, she said.

Shes spent the summer taking classes and working as a babysitter, a job she loves. However, when it came to making the decision about living on campus, it was devastating to not feel comfortable enough to live in the dorm. I live in a condo with a single mom and a dog. I love it here and its the perfect amount of space for the two of us and our pup. But I was really looking forward to moving out and my mom was really looking forward to having alone time for once in her life, Nove said. Of course, its been hard on her just as much as its been hard on me, so theres the factor just wanting to be out on my own so badly and not being able to. And then on top of that, Im not a person with a huge circle of friends. I was really looking forward to branching out and meeting other people that shared similar interests and values.

While some are opting to stay at home, others, like Francesca Burton, a neuroscience and biochemistry double major, are living on campus this fall. After her plans to visit Canada with her mom and her plans to go to Florida with friends vanished, Burton spent her summer working at the local Boston Market. She hopes that spending the last few weeks of her high school career online has prepared her for online learning in college.

Im definitely disappointed were not going to have in-person classes because I have found I learn better in an in-person setting. But I think by now, Ive just gotten so used to the fact that we will probably have this weird online semester. Ive kind of processed everything, she said.

When it comes to fall activities, COVID-19 has left her mostly unsure. I saw that there was a cooking club that I was interested in. I was thinking of picking up Ultimate Frisbee just as a thing to try, which I think is going to be impacted, she said. So Im a little sad that I wont get wont get to try that out.

But overall, she still sees the fall in an optimistic light. Maryland has been doing a pretty good job on keeping cases down. We havent had a spike yet. I would say Im optimistic that things will go back to normal, said Burton. I think thats all we can do is be optimistic, and just try to make the most of this. I just hope that despite everything being online, we can still just be normal college kids instead of just kids going through a pandemic.

Ruby Ahaiwe ’21 Focuses Her Public Health Interest on Her Community – Bowdoin News

Before the pandemic, Ahaiwe was also planning a "huge walk for health," as she describes it, in which local people and health care providers walked from the hospital to the local government center to demand more resources for rural health care.

After it became clear that COVID-19 would make it impossible to fly to Nigeria, Ahaiwe established community liaisonsincluding friends and relativeswho could start to educate local people about the importance of taking advantage of local clinics.

"There is a heavy dependency on traditional medicine," Ahaiwe said, "which can work, but people should understand they have a wide range of options for medical care."

Her community partners have been putting up posters Ahaiwe has designed and printed that contain medical advice, such as the importance of handwashing.

The hospital also recently organized a COVID-19 awareness walk to educate community members about the seriousness of the virus. Ahaiwe donated part of her grant to buy face masks and pocket sanitizers to hand out to townspeople.

Working from afar this summer has been successful. But Ahaiwe is a bit worried about how well the community will receive her when she eventually does return to Nigeria. Though her family is from the village, they left the area when she was a child. "Some people might say, 'Who is this young girl telling us how to run our health?'"

To foster community buy-in to her health-outreach projects, Ahaiwe has contacted community leaders, including the local king."Hesaid it was good for the community that young people are coming back to invest in the community and that he would offer whatever support I need,"Ahaiwe said.

Her public health project is the kind of work Ahaiwe wants to dedicate her lifework to. At Bowdoin, she is majoring in biochemistry and minoring in Francophone studies. After college, she plans to earn a master's degree in public health to work in the area of preventative health care, "especially in places with disparities," she said. She would love to be based in Nigeria or somewhere else in Africa, she added.

"This is my focus," she said. "I am passionate about it."
