BTC ahead of the curve on increased bandwidth demand – EyeWitness News

NASSAU, BAHAMAS Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) executives said yesterday the company is slightly ahead of the curve on bandwidth demand, having increased network capacity by some 25 percent since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Andre Foster, the companys senior director of technology operations, told Eyewitness News that the company was doing all the right things to ensure that those persons have a reliable and efficient network to work from home and the engage virtual learning platforms due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

We were slightly ahead of the curve as it relates to bandwidth demand. We did start to see an increase in usage of our services in late July early August, Foster said.

In the last 18 months we have made a lot of investment to ensure that we have a much more stable network. We have been moving customers to our fibre to the home footprint; from our legacy network to our state-of-the art fibre to the home network which provides a tremendous amount of additional bandwidth capacity to our subscribers.

He continued: Were pleased that we are not seeing any high utilization that is causing any major congestion. Were also in the process of re-balancing our network meaning, where our capacity demands may be starting to hit certain thresholds we will move that traffic over to other parts of the network where we have capacity headroom.

Since the onset of the pandemic we added about 25 percent additional capacity and we have on order another 10 gigabytes of internet capacity. Thats servicing a combination of both our fixed and mobile networks. We are looking at another 15 percent over the current capacity. That is in the pipeline to delivered before the end of this year or sooner if the demand necessitates.

Foster noted that the company continues to deploy its fibre to the home technology.

We have also upgraded our copper networks in various areas throughout central new Providence to ensure we have a solid connection to households, he said.

Currently we sit in front of 40,000 homes with our fibre to the home footprint. We sit in front of another 10,000-12,000 with our upgraded DSL technology, so close to 50 percent of our homes have been upgraded

Over 50 percent of the network on Grand Bahama is fibre to the home. On New Providence its probably around 30 percent of the homes. Were probably nearing 50 percent of the archipelago being upgraded and every year our intention is to grow that penetration of new upgraded areas by double digits, said Foster.

Anatomy of the Vistara safety video: What went into making the viral ad – Moneycontrol.com

Vistara last week revealed its first in-flight safety video, which has been very well received and is going viral. The safety video is themed on yoga, which has an instructor showcasing various movements in picturesque offbeat locations across the length and breadth of India while giving inflight safety instructions.

While uniquely themed airline safety videos are not uncommon globally (for example, British Airways has had a long-running series featuring famous British comedians, and Qatar Airways has a star-studded football-themed video), and these videos have been proven to be more watched and therefore the safety message better communicated to those who tend to ignore the more staid safety demos and videos, this was a first for India. The fact that it starts with a visual of the spectacular and much-in-the-news Pangong Lake also led to some buzz.

The method behind the madness

The video however was scripted and shot much earlier in September last year and Pangong Lake was chosen as the opening scene simply because it is arguably the most visually spectacular place in India, a place I had personally fallen in love with since I first visited Leh in 2016, scoping it out for Vistaras operations to it that began shortly thereafter.

The team the conceptualised Vistaras safety video was also behind the very well-received and popular 'Vistara Retrojet', an Airbus A320 painted in the colours of the original Tata Air Lines of the 1940s that was founded by JRD Tata and eventually became Air India, and featuring on occasion crew dressed in retro-uniforms harking back to the glory days of flying of the 1950s and 1960s, on flights featuring menus inspired by Taj Hotels and JRD Tatas favourite meals as remembered by their chefs.

The attention to detail and authenticity went as far as the registration of the aircraft itself, VT-ATV, a registration that was originally carried by a Tata Air Lines DC3 aircraft. With no colour photos available anywhere of what the Tata Airlines colours were (other than a bare meal fuselage), the team used its creative imagination to come up with a golden-sepia tinted fuselage, with red lettering and grey cheatlines. The special retro flights became highly sought after, and together with the Retrojet, helped make Vistara into the much recognised, differentiated, and respected brand it is today.

The SpiceJet story

Earlier in 2014, (incidentally spearheaded by key members of the same marketing team that later moved to Vistara), SpiceJet had put faces of pilots and cabin crew billboard-style on a Boeing 737, which it named Red Chilli. This again was a first in India, and it created a lot of buzz as well as energised the staff internally. This was just a couple of months after SpiceJet surprised and delighted passengers on Holi by having supplementary (non-operating) cabin crew gracefully dance in the aisles to Balam Pichkari on several flights. This did initially get the airline in a spot of bother with the regulator because it had never been done in India before, but the matter was settled amicably when it was demonstrated that there was no safety issue, and that such activities were not uncommon on airlines around the world. The Holi dance made headline news for several days, and SpiceJet ticket sales went through the roof during that time, prompting a normally staid finance executive to ask whether we could make the crew dance on every flight.

Jokes aside, there is a very clear and driven rationale and focus behind such disruptive and eye-ball catching marketing. It boils down to the need to be able to build a brand that punches above its weight, to help make up for size and scale disadvantage a brand may have vis-a-viz the market leader. Building a differentiated brand with high recall value also generates pull, giving customers a reason other than just price to select a product or an airline, and perhaps even pay a slight premium for it. To put it simply, the return-on-investment for such initiatives in terms of goodwill (both internal and external), buzz, and incremental sales generated or price extracted, is much higher than one may achieve from more traditional mass advertising, and helps reduce some of the disadvantage of being a smaller player when it comes to driving customer choice. There is also an element of a smaller player working harder to win and retain ones business, a concept wonderfully captured in the 1980s marketing by Avis, the rental car company. It ran a campaign headlined by the words Avis is only No. 2 in rental cars. So why go with us?, accompanied by the slogan We Try Harder (because were #2)!

So the next time an ad, marketing campaign, or video catches your eye, remember, there is a method behind the madness. How boring the world would be if everyone followed the exact same script and there was no room for colour, creativity, originality, and differentiation.

Heres a toast to all the creative minds out there that help make the world a little less predictable and black-and-white. Thank you for the joy and the colour.

Anatomy Of A Wind Turbine: The Eco-Friendly Power Solution – IndianWeb2.com

We imagine your first encounter with a wind turbine was through the window of your car as you zip down a remote highway. Wind turbines are unforgettable because of their large and impressive stature and are emblematic of the widespread global adoption of this power source as a means to generate more sustainable energy solutions for communities.

India has been at the forefront of renewableenergy revolution and has emerged as the one of the worlds largest and most competitive markets for cleanenergy innovations. Wind power saw a stable growth in the country over the past few decades, and India currently ranks fourth in the global wind energy capacity ranking.

TwoIEEE Power and Energy Society (PES)members, Pouyan Pourbeik and Nicholas Miller, explain how wind power technology works, and why it is so important.

In simplest terms, a wind turbine is a mechanical machine that converts the kinetic energy of wind into mechanical rotational energy that can be used to do some work, says Pourbeik.

Utilizing the natural resource, wind, as a source of energy production is not a new technological practice. In fact, wind turbines have been developed in various ways for several centuries. Pourbeik says that the first recorded wind turbine dates back to the seventh century in Iran and was used to grind grain and pump water from wells.

Todays modern wind turbines are used to run electrical machines that then convert the rotational mechanical energy into electrical energy that can serve the electrical needs of residential homes, commercial buildings and industry, says Pourbeik.

Wind turbines are sustainable because of the power conversion process; by tapping into the wind, the process is cleaner than having to mine or burn material that creates massive amounts of emissions as a result. Wind energy is a solution to reducing those carbon emissions, eliminating other forms of pollution in the air, and eventually moving away from traditional methods that have the opposite effect on our planet.

Another benefit of wind power is that this source of energy is free and bountiful. When I lecture on wind turbine basics, I often start with the statement a wind turbine is a device that converts the kinetic energy in wind/moving air into money, says Miller. The fact that there is electric power generated is incidental.

You cant afford to build a wind turbine that captures all of the available energy all the time, says Miller.

Every technology comes with its own set of challenges that engineers are equipped to solve. Integration into pre-existing power grids and gaining general public awareness of the technology as a sustainable tool are the current hurdles Pourbeik and Miller face as power engineers.

There are challenges with engineering such systems and reliably integrating them into the world-wide electric infrastructure but that is what makes the current technical environment in the field of power and energy engineering so exciting, says Pourbeik.

One of those challenges to the energy grid is energy storage and reliability. Traditionally, when a customer demands electric power, the generation and the power grid is capable of meeting that demand. But with the advent and explosive growth of wind and solar power, it is Mother Nature who decides when the electric power will be supplied, not the consumer, says Miller.

Since the birth of the electric power system in the late 19th and early 20th century, energy has been converted from mechanical energy to electrical energy through the use of rotating electrical machines, which are directly connected to the bulk power grid, explains Pourbeik. These conventional machines run at a constant speed, which means that the frequency of the electrical power they produce is also constant.

Because wind turbine speed is constantly changing due to the wind, power engineers must figure out a way to efficiently convert the wind energy to mechanical rotating energy. The solution is a rotating electrical machine connected to the wind turbine that runs at a wide range of speeds.

So to interface the machine (running at different speeds) to the bulk electrical power system (which has a fixed frequency) one needs to use a power-electronic converter interface, says Pourbeik. Thus, the electrical behavior of the power generating device becomes very different as seen from the grid.

While power-electronic converters have been used in other ways, they have never been used at such a large scale as they are now to connect the heart of wind power plants to the grid. Over the last few decades, the power and energy industry has been learning how to utilize this technology in the most reliable way possible.

Pouyan and I have worked through the first stages of the revolution, says Miller. Since the turn of the century, we have watched (and participated) as innovations in technology, markets, regulation and understanding have steadily moved the challenge out. Today, we (the U.S. and other world grids) regularly operate at levels of wind and solar generation that we thought would be nearly impossible or wouldnt happen for decades into the future.

IEEE PES and the renewable integration community have a large focus on how to make the grid work in a reliable, safe, clean and affordable fashion. But Pourbeik and Miller are hopeful about the future of sustainable energy and the technology being developed.

We are continuing to move at an astonishing rate, adding innovations on all those fronts, says Miller. Very honestly, there has never been a better, more exciting time to be a power engineer.

Anatomy of a Goal: The Unions 22-pass sequence that picked apart the Red Bulls – Brotherly Game

Kacper Przybylko scored the only goal in the 31st minute Tuesday night as the Philadelphia Union beat the New York Red Bulls 1-0 in their first home game since their victory over the Red Bulls last October 20 th in the MLS Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

The Union scored an impressive team goal as if it were straight from the training ground, one in which they connected 22 passes before Przybylko side-footed home Ray Gaddis cross from close range. The goal was Przybylkos second of the season and his first since scoring against Inter Miami in the Unions second game of the MLS is Back Tournament.

For Gaddis, the assist was the 10th in his career and his first since last Septembers game against San Jose. Another notable component of the goal, beside the number of passes, was the patience in which the Union maintained possession and waited for the Red Bulls to lose their shape. Though the Red Bulls displayed some questionable team defending, the Union deserve credit for exploiting that weakness.

The sequence began with a Union throw-in well inside their own half. Instead of pressing, the Red Bulls backed off and conceded possession, something theyd done often throughout the first 30 minutes, and allowed the Union to pass the ball around, in, and out again until eventually dropping inside their own half. This wouldnt be a bad strategy on the road against a Union midfield that is better, but the Red Bulls never pressured, stayed in straight lines, and failed to rotate fast enough. And allowing the Union midfield time and space is like leaving your Wawa hoagie on a beach towel with swarming seagulls.

After 13 passes that backed the Red Bulls into their own half, the first penetrating ball from Mark McKenzie to Jamiro Monteiro through a channel down the left side beat three defenders, exposing those Red Bull gaps and lines. Monteiro had time but was stuck near the sideline with three surrounding defenders, perfect double team position. The Red Bulls were slow to press, and Monteiro pulled the ball back and found Kai Wagner, who passed to Jos Martinez all alone in the middle. Again, New York was slow to react, and Martinez turned and switched the play to an open Alejandro Bedoya on the far right side, a sequence that happened often in the early minutes.

This time, New York rotated, but when Bedoya played the ball back to Jakob Glesnes, they never pulled out or applied pressure. Instead they stayed collapsed, so Glesnes had time to pass to Martinez again in the middle with space, and as Bedoya slid back, Ray Gaddis pushed forward, and Wooten filled Bedoyas spot out wide.

Something important here about offensive shape. As Bedoya played the ball back to Glesnes, Przybylko and Aaronson remained central, which left room wide for Gaddis to run into. The ball from Wooten led Gaddis, which helped Gaddis face the Red Bull defender. He had a look at the flat back four and played a strong swirling ball behind the line away from Red Bulls keeper Ryan Meara, freezing him. A lack of communication between Meara and his central defenders contributed to the goal, but Przybylko was in his wheelhouse, unmarked. Aaron Long barely glanced his way. Przybylko did well to slip in behind the line, meet the ball, and tuck it home off a short hop.

Its energizing for a team to have so many players involved in one goal. And that lift led to several opportunities for Przybylko and Sergio Santos in the second half as the Red Bulls took more chances at the other end. Team goals like this also builds confidence for future games, especially for Przybylko, who needed a poachers goal to prove that hes finding his form.

The Umbrella Academy Bests The Office and Grey’s Anatomy in Weekly Viewership – ComicBook.com

In the years since Netflix introduced its streaming platform, it has become a juggernaut in the world of entertainment, with not only the quality of its original series rivaling anything seen on any traditional TV networks, but now with its numbers toppling beloved properties. While Nielsen typically covers ratings of broadcast TV events, the organization has revealed its first data about streaming viewership numbers, which shows that Netflix's The Umbrella Academy has been watched more than anything else on that service or on Amazon Prime Video, which includes familiar series like Grey's Anatomy, The Office, and Parks and Recreation. Understandably, part of this is due to the series having premiered its second season in July, but for a relatively unknown series to be besting classic series is surely an impressive feat.

Nielsen released the below top 10 list, per Variety, which features a number of recognizable series.

The Umbrella Academy (20 episodes) 3,011 minutes (millions)

Shameless (120 episodes) 1,125 minutes

Greys Anatomy (361 episodes) 918 minutes

The Office (192 episodes) 897 minutes

Criminal Minds (277 episodes) 697 minutes

NCIS (353 episodes) 524 minutes

In The Dark (26 episodes) 418 minutes

Dexter (96 episodes) 316 minute

Supernatural (321 episodes) 315 minutes

Parks and Recreation (121 episodes) 304 minutes

Interestingly, programs like The Office and Parks and Recreation are both owned by NBC and once 2021 rolls around, these series will no longer be available on Netflix and will exclusively be available on Peacock. Surely some Netflix subscribers will be binge-watching those series before they leave the service, but with months to go before that move, it seems fans haven't started those marathons quite yet.

For those unfamiliar with Umbrella Academy, the series is described, "Five warned his family (so, so many times) that using his powers to escape from Vanyas 2019 apocalypse was risky. Well, he was right the time jump scatters the siblings in time in and around Dallas, Texas. Over a three year period. Starting in 1960. Some, having been stuck in the past for years, have built lives and moved on, certain theyre the only ones who survived. Five is the last to land, smack dab in the middle of a nuclear doomsday, which spoiler alert! turns out is a result of the groups disruption of the timeline (dj vu, anyone?). Now the Umbrella Academy must find a way to reunite, figure out what caused doomsday, put a stop to it, and return to the present timeline to stop that other apocalypse. All while being hunted by a trio of ruthless Swedish assassins. But seriously, no pressure or anything."

Both seasons of The Umbrella Academy are now streaming on Netflix.

Are you surprised that the series is so popular? Let us know in the comments below!

‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Debbie Allen Teases That Richard and Catherine Are Still at Odds This Season (Exclusive) – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Is there hope for Richard Webber and his estranged wife, Catherine Fox, this season on Greys Anatomy?

Executive producer Debbie Allen teased plenty of drama for season 17 as the series plans to begin shooting the second week of September. Viewers were left hanging as the couple almost reunited only to end the last season at odds again. All I know is that Catherine and Richard are at odds honey, Allen dished with Showbiz Cheat Sheet.

We were in battle when we stopped and thats how we start, she added. So I dont need to tell you more, but its going to be a nice season to see where we land and how we land. Everyone wants us to get back together. Jim [Pickens Jr.] and I are like, We want to kiss again! We want you all to see real love on screen and how mature people play a love scene.

There was no way the medical drama could avoid facing COVID-19 head-on. But Allen isnt sure if the virus will take center stage. I can only say Ive read two scripts and those are the first two Im directing, Allen shared. So Im not totally sure where we are going, but this will fall into place once we are moving forward. But we are dealing with COVID, thats for sure.

The series has touched on newsworthy topics in the past and Allen says addressing racial injustice on the show could be interesting. I would like to see it discussed because you know part of the beauty of Greys is that we never really dealt with a lot of racial issues, Allen said. Because diversity is normal for us here. Richard Webber is Black. Miranda Bailey is Black.

RELATED: Greys Anatomy: James Pickens Talks Richard Webbers Diagnosis and If There Is a Future for Richard and Catherine

We have Asian doctors, she continued. We have a mixture of people. But I think this might be a different time. And Im looking forward to seeing how we address it.

Allen was on her way to a table read when she spoke with Showbiz Cheat Sheet. While the pandemic shutdown will impact when the new fall season begins, Allen wasnt sure when new programming will air. Honestly, nobody knows, she admitted. Were all going forward with the right intent to air on a certain day, but anything could happen. Anything could stop and pull us back.

Hopefully were doing it right and everyone has integrity and is truthful about their health, she continued. Because you rely on peoples integrity to tell you if they have symptoms [of COVID-19]. You rely on peoples integrity to tell you if theyve been exposed to someone who has COVID. She added that production will include plenty of masking and carefully followed protocols.

RELATED: Greys Anatomy Will Have the Most Mask Compliance of Any Film Set This Fall

Allen has stayed positive and healthy during the pandemic by re-imagining her dance school, the Debbie Allen Dance Academy into a virtual environment. Shes also cherished spending time with her family and granddaughter. Allen partnered with Aspercreme to launchthe Love is Grand campaign that celebrates active grandparents.

She encourages families to engage in the campaign by sharing a photo that celebrates modern grandparents. Use the hashtag #LoveIsGrand to celebrate Grandparents Day on Sunday, Sept. 13. For every photo shared, Aspercreme will donate $1 to an organization supporting aging adults, up to $50,000.

The Formative Four: Top Health IT Capabilities That Will Improve Medication Management – Pharmacy Technology Report

Katherine CappsMolly Ekstrand, BPharm, BCACP, AE-C

Pharmacists well understand that medication is part of the daily lives of many Americans. In fact, studies show nearly 75% of visits to physician offices and hospital outpatient clinics involve medication therapy, and almost 30% of adults take five or more medications. Unfortunately, suboptimal medication use leads to at least 275,000 deaths annually and costs more than $528 billion.

Recently, our organization, The Get the Medications Right (GTMRx) Institute, in Tysons Corner, Va., released a report outlining steps for medication management reform, including a call for comprehensive medication management, or CMM. This comprehensive management is an evidence-based process of care that personalizes the approach, resulting in better care, reduced costs, and improved patient satisfaction and provider work life.

The report, the GTMRx Blueprint for Change, includes recommendations outlining how each stakeholder can get involved to improve patient carefrom physicians to clinical pharmacists, health plan sponsors, providers, consumer groups, employers as health plan sponsors, and policymakers. Many things need to change, but technology and information technology (IT) capabilities are central in the challenge for reform.

Here, we outline four health IT categories to achieve medication optimization through CMM, enabling a broad practice adoption of a systematic approach to medication use throughout the continuum of care. Software supports the practice management systems developed around CMM workflows and thought processes, driving consistency of the CMM service. Within each of these categories, organizations will undergo a journey toward maturity. However, considerations in each of these categories are foundational.

1. Clinical Decision Support Tools (at the point of care): Access to diagnostic results, clinical notes, patient status and other clinical information allows care teams to fulfill important activities in the CMM process. This information offers insight into patients experiencing medication therapy problems, and it helps the clinicians determine whether or not the patient has achieved the clinical goals of therapy. Having the ability to evaluate actual use patterns of all medications (e.g., over the counter, supplements, prescribed drugs and biologics) also is important. This full view of information is essential for the medication expert to properly assess each medication for appropriateness, focusing on the achievement of the clinical goals for each therapy. Organization and interpretation of these data in a medication-centric workflow can improve the efficiency and efficacy of clinical decision making. A medication-related dashboard should have the ability to support anyone on the care team, allowing them to make simple, streamlined decisions about a patients medication therapy. This dashboard should include objective data that help clinicians decide whether a patient needs a higher level statin, the blood pressure medicine should be increased, or pharmacogenomic data are needed to assess the safety or efficacy of the medications.

2. Population Health and Risk Stratification Tools: Health care resources are finite. There are certain patient populations that benefit more from CMM services. Tools that integrate data from electronic health records (EHRs), pharmacies, health plans and other reliable sources can provide the foundation for deployment of comprehensive risk models. Risk modeling tools allow payor, provider or value-based networks to easily identify the patients who are at risk and will benefit most from CMM services. Health systems, pharmacies, payors and prescribers should also have the ability to proactively reach out and invite at-risk patients to participate in CMM services, effectively automating a process and decreasing administrative burden from the point-of-care clinician.

3. Patient Engagement and Care Coordination Tools: Health IT should enable and facilitate the exchange of information between the patient and care team. Patients gather information in various forms that can inform clinical decisions regarding medication therapy. The tools should have the ability to integrate the digital therapeutic health information from a patient with the pharmacogenomic data that clinicians currently receive as a separate, cumbersome report. These types of information would come together in an EHR in a usable fashion. Health IT can facilitate bidirectional communication between the pharmacist, clinician and patient. Clinicians should have the ability to effectively and efficiently communicate across the continuum of care. In many cases, the patients care team, including the pharmacist providing comprehensive medication management, are not colocated and do not share a single EHR platform. Its imperative that health IT has the ability to enable bidirectional, secure health-related data exchange to promote optimal medication use.

4. Health IT Supporting Economic, Clinical and Humanistic Outcomes: Purpose-built software can drive consistency and demonstrate the value of CMM practice. Software ensures the capture of compliance and regulatory reporting requirements unique to CMM services. The tools should have the ability to allow the team to identify medication therapy problems in a systematic way, with the ability to gather and analyze information across systems and care settings. The tools should have the ability to track participation, offer point-of-care insight to the clinician, and, in order to efficiently identify medication therapy problems, record the defined medication care plan and steps toward resolution.

CMM services can be correlated with broader changes in health status or health care utilization patterns, thus demonstrating contribution and value to the broader health care system. However, optimizing medication use through CMM in practice truly and wholly relies on having the right data, at the right time, at the point of care and available to the entire team.

Ms. Capps is the co-founder and executive director of the GTMRx Instituteusvuwtdtxr, a catalyst for change that brings critical stakeholders together, bound by the urgent need to get the medications right. Ms. Ekstrand is a distinguished fellow at GTMRx.

Building up its AI operations, GSK opens a $13M London hub with plans to woo talent now trekking to Silicon Valley – Endpoints News

Continuing its efforts to ramp up global AI operations, GlaxoSmithKline has opened a 10 million ($13 million-plus) research base in Kings Cross, London.

The AI hotspot is already home to Googles DeepMind, and the Francis Crick and Alan Turing research institutes. GSK said it hopes to tap into the huge London tech talent pool and attract candidates who might otherwise head to Silicon Valley.

Its a vibrant ecosystem that has everything from outstanding medicine as well as also being a big tech corridor. DeepMind is there. Google is there. Its near the Crick Institute, and of course modern computing was born, basically, with Alan Turing and the Turing Institute, GSK R&D president Hal Barron said at a London Tech Week fireside chat. So we are quite convinced that both the talent and the ecosystem will enable us to build a very vibrant hub in London, getting the top talent, the best thinkers and people to be able to interact with us in GSK to take technology and help us turn it into medicines.

The company believes AI has the power to vastly improve its drug discovery process. It claims that genetically validated drugs are twice as likely to be successful. And GSK has lots of genetic data to work with. The new workspace, located in the Stanley Building, has already lured in 30 scientists, 10 of whom are in the companys AI fellow program.

In fact, many biotechs are now turning to AI, which they believe can speed up successful development by analyzing hundreds of genes at once or rapidly screening billions of molecules.

GSK is focused on finding better medicines and vaccines not just better products, but finding them in better ways, so we are using functional genomics, human genetics and artificial intelligence and machine learning, the company said in a statement.

It also has AI researchers based in San Francisco and Boston, and aims to reach 100 AI-focused employees by mid-2021. Our goal is to have the best and brightest people in the world to join us, Barron said.

In AI, we are scouring the planet for the best people. These folks are very rare to find. Competition is high and there arent a large number of them, Tony Wood, GSKs SVP of medicinal science and technology, told The Guardian in December.

The new London hub has the capacity for 60 to 80 staff members. Now all thats left to do is fill it.

For men, are two drinks really too much? – Lock Haven Express

A federal health panel now recommends that men consume no more than one alcoholic drink a day.

For 30 years, the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee set the limit at two drinks a day. (Women have long been urged to limit consumption to one drink a day.)

Other studies found that drinking under the previous two-beverage standard was actually good for the heart and that moderate drinkers live longer than abstainers.

So why was the earlier guideline chopped in half?

What we have here is a merger of several unfortunate habits in American policymaking where alcohol is concerned.

One is a long-standing disapproval of drinking. Prohibition was a moral crusade that ended in fiasco 87 years ago.

But theres a modern version that gussies up the disapproval as a health matter.

Most everyone agrees that continuous heavy drinking can devastate ones health and that addicts alcoholics should stop drinking altogether. But the new guidelines sloppily lump together excessive drinking with social drinking to make what was considered moderate consumption of alcohol look dangerous.

In response, five professors of medicine and epidemiology at Harvard sent a letter to federal officials expressing serious reservations about the new advisory.

It complained that the committee cited a paper showing that higher alcohol intake was associated with higher risk of all-cause mortality but ignored other data in the same study that the researchers say demonstrate a low-dose, high-frequency pattern was associated with significantly lower risk of total mortality.

In other words, the guidelines didnt distinguish between amounts being consumed.

As the signers put it, the original conclusion was biased by inclusion of binge drinkers who provide no evidence about the safety of within-guideline drinking.

The guidelines are updated every five years by the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services. Three of the Harvard profs had previously served on the advisory committee.

This tightening of standards, The Washington Post notes, comes during a pandemic when alcohol consumption already at a 20-year high is spiking further.

That may be, but what does one have to do with the other?

We can well believe that some Americans have been drinking a lot more during the lockdowns.

If theres a problem, wouldnt it be the lot more rather than the two drinks versus one?

Thats like saying the way to stop drivers from speeding at 90 miles an hour is to lower the speed limit from 60 to 50.

BMJ, formerly the British Medical Journal, recently published a study that listed moderate alcohol intake among the five low-risk lifestyle factors associated with longevity. Interestingly, the United Kingdom in 2016 lowered its limit for low-risk drinking to 14 drinks a week for both men and women.

As for possible health benefits, researchers in Korea recently found a link between moderate drinking and lower levels of the protein that forms Alzheimers brain plaque, as reported in The New York Times.

They defined moderate drinking as up to 13 standard drinks a week.

Famous studies tie moderate wine consumption to lower rates of cardiovascular disease and longer lives.

Some of todays crusaders argue that it isnt the alcohol thats conferring the benefits.

Rather, wine drinkers tend to follow healthier lifestyles involving exercise, eating vegetables and social interaction.

But even if these doubters are correct that a wine-drinking culture only enabled the good health habits, whats wrong with that?

It is highly unlikely that those knocking down five glasses a night will pay the new guidelines any mind.

The bothersome part is that men who enjoyed a bourbon and a cabernet with dinner might feel pressured to cut their pleasure in half and for reasons little based on current science.

15 Best Ways to Improve Your Libido, According to Doctors – Yahoo Lifestyle

Sex is one of the simplest things in the world, and one of the most complicated. If your libido is flagging, it's not as easy as flipping a switch back to "on." "Libido is driven by a number of factors," says Michael Ingber, MD, a specialist in female pelvic medicine and urology based in Denville, New Jersey. "The sexual response cycle requires a lot of things to happen." That process can be affected by diet, lifestyle, stress and hormone levelsjust to name a few variables. If your desire is derailed and you want to get back on track, here's where doctors say you should start. Read on, and to ensure your health and the health of others, don't miss these Sure Signs You've Already Had Coronavirus.

1

"Walking or doing some type of movement exercise daily reduces inflammation, boosts sex drive and improves the blood flow to the sex organs," says Yeral Patel, MD, a functional medicine physician in Newport Beach, California. "This small adjustment can make a big difference."

"Exercise also can increase the output of natural endorphins, making one feel calm and sexy," says Felice Gersh, MD, an OB/GYN and founder/director of the Integrative Medical Group in Irvine, California. "Of course, exercise helps both males and females become buffand a body you feel sexy in goes a long way to increasing the desire for sex."

The Rx: Aim to get 30 minutes of exercise most days of the week, including at least two sessions of strength training weekly.

2

"Chocolate contains many mood-enhancing and energy-producing chemicals, so it's no wonder we associate chocolate with friskiness, happiness and sexual cravings and satisfaction," says Anna Cabeca, DO, an OB-GYN and anti-aging physician and author of The Hormone Fix. "It contains theobromine (a mood elevator), caffeine and sugar (a mood elevator and energy booster) and the endorphin Phenylethylamine (PEA) which produces an energy boost."

The Rx: Try a few squares (a 1 to 2 oz. serving) of dark chocolate for dessert.

Story continues

3

"Chronic stress keeps this sex drive low," says Myles Spar, MD, MPH, an internal medicine physician and author of Optimal Men's Health. "The best way to fix this is to learn how to manage stress so that the body is not always in fight-or-flight mode, feeling like you are under attack all the time."

The Rx: "Daily habits like journaling, breathwork, mindfulness practice, meditation, gentle yoga and even prayer have been shown to significantly lower the sympathetic nervous system overdrive state and create a sense of relaxation," says Spar. "Then sex drive increases, because the brain senses that it's time for reproduction. It's all evolutionary."

4

"Sleep is important. There have been several studies that show a lack of sleep negatively affects sex drive. So make sure you're well-rested or you won't be up for the task," says Ingber.

The Rx: Experts recommend seven to nine hours of sleep nightly for the optimal performance of your heart, brain, metabolismand sex drive.

5

"Overweight and obese patients have increased inflammation which causes hormone imbalance and thus, can cause low libido and low sex drive," says Patel.

The Rx: Stay in a healthy weight range with regular exercise and a balanced diet.

6

"Most processed foods contain hormone-altering chemicals that can wreak havoc on (among other things) sex drive," says Patel.

The Rx: Instead of packaged foods, Patel recommends eating beets and spinach, which are high in natural nitrates that help increase blood flow to the sex organs; lycopene-rich foods such as citrus and tomatoes, which also increase blood flow; and foods high in flavonoids, such as dark chocolate, blueberries, strawberries and green tea. Those help strengthen and heal blood vessels.

7

"Oysters have been recognized for centuries as a classic aphrodisiac," says Cabeca. "Oysters contain dopamine, a hormone known to increase libido. Oysters and most shellfish also contain arginine, an amino acid that the body uses to make nitric oxide. Nitric oxide will relax and expand your blood vessels, much like the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, thereby increasing libido." Avocados are high in vitamin B6, which helps increase hormone production and boost libido for both sexes, she adds.

The Rx: Indulge in the occasional oyster dinner. Avocados can be a part of your daily menuon salads, in smoothies, or as a side dish for lean protein.

8

"Toxins are another stressor on our bodies that can impact hormone production and can bind to hormone receptors," says Stephanie Gray, DNP, MS, founder of the Integrative Health and Hormone Clinic in Hiawatha, Iowa. "Work to remove toxic chemicals from your home and from your personal care products."

The Rx: One of the common toxins is plastics. "Plastic often contains bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine disruptor that can have negative effects on our reproductive organs and hormones, specifically the breasts in females and prostate in males," says Gray. "Some personal care products also contain parabens and phthalates (more endocrine disruptors), so read the labels and avoid products that simply list added 'fragrance,' since this catch-all term sometimes means hidden phthalates."

9

"Too often patients see me stating, 'My doctor already checked my hormones and told me they were normal' when that's not truly the case," says Gray. "Maybe they had an FSH (menopause) marker checked but didn't actually have sex hormone levels like estradiol, estrone, progesterone, and testosterone checked."

The Rx: "Beyond having the levels checked, find a hormone specialist who can properly interpret your hormone levels and formulate a game plan to improve them," says Gray. "Just because levels register in the normal 'range' doesn't mean they are optimal."

10

"Just like men, testosterone is the main steroid hormone which causes libido to increase in women. So believe it or not, we often give this to women who have a low libido," says Ingber. "Also, hormones like dopamine, oxytocin, and serotonin play a role."

The Rx: Certain prescription medications, such as Addyi and Vyleesi, are prescribed to treat decreased sexual desire in women, says Ingber. If low testosterone is a cause of a man's low sex drive, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is available.

11

"Ristela (Bonafide) is a new natural therapy which is a plant-based blend of french maritime pine bark extract, antioxidants and naturally occurring amino acids. It was shown to increase physical arousal by 75% after only two months of taking it," says Ingber.

The Rx: See your healthcare provider about whether a nutraceutical is a good option for you.

12

"I am often asked about low libido and what options are available for women who are experiencing a low sexual desire with their partner," says Lyndsey Harper, MD, founder of Rosy, an app for women with decreased sexual desire. "My answer is always the same regaining your sexual desire is like setting a new goal. It requires a commitment and dedication to trying something new that may be out of your comfort zone and sticking with it until you reach your goal."

The Rx: "One of the evidence-based interventions I recommend is reading a romantic or sexy short story before you plan on having sex," says Harper. "Reading a sexy story can rev up sexual energy and open up the room for pleasure and excitement. Once you have a positive and pleasurable sexual experience, this in and of itself will help you regain intimacy and create a physical connection and appreciation with your partner."

13

"A diet high in green leafy vegetables, beets, and citrus fruits and melons is a great way to raise the production of nitric oxide, the gas signaling agent that causes vascular engorgement of the penis and of the female labia minora and clitoris," says Gersh.

The Rx: Are you getting enough? The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends eating 2 cups of fruits and 2 cups of vegetables every day. (But more wouldn't hurt.)

14

"Antioxidants can greatly aid in the enjoyment of sex by increasing genital blood flow, lowering body-wide inflammation, and improving levels of sex hormones," says Gersh. "Some supplements can also raise levels of nitric oxide, providing its precursor, like beet powder and Vitamin C."

The Rx: "For supplements, I'd suggest maca as an overall best aphrodisiac," says Gersh. "But don't forget a multivitamin, vitamin D and K, zinc, magnesium, omega-3, probiotics, B12, folate and a B complex."

15

"If there are relationship problems, they must be addressed first thing," says Gersh. "Relationship discord causes tremendous stress, which lowers libido. Stress of all types must be handled, and most particularly when the stress involves that couple."

The Rx: If you have conflicts to work out with your partner, counseling and stress-reduction exercises are smart strategies. "Try meditation or guided imagery to improve tolerance of another and of oneself," says Gersh. "Celebrate the little beauties of life, and try to keep the larger issues emotionally managed."

As for yourself: To get through this pandemic at your healthiest, don't miss these Sure Signs You've Already Had Coronavirus.

September is Self Care Month. Here’s how to Eat for Wellness – The Beet

September is National Self Care Awareness Month, traditionally a time when "back to school"has always meant personal renewal, stretching yourself, and trying new things. Here's how to take care of yourself by eating a whole-food plant-based diet, according to Dr. Sari Eitches, an LA-based integrative internist whopromotes wellness through lifestyle choices and takes a holistic approach to personal health.

In an exclusive interview with The Beet, Dr. Eitches, a long-time vegan, talks about guiding her patients to a plant-based lifestyle, as well as what to look out for when transitioning to a vegan or plant-based approach to eating, and her love ofvegan cuisine from around the world. She leads by example and shows that a plant-based diet can optimize our bodys self-healing properties, by lowering inflammation and adding antioxidants to every meal.Lether advice will inspire you to nourish your body and start adding plants to your meals, and take care of you.

Dr. Eitches: I was just finishing my first year as a medical student and I was the least healthy I'd ever been. I was super addicted to caffeine and getting by with convenience food. One week, I signed up for a yoga retreat to reset and relax. The retreat center had a vegetarian dining hall and my teacher was a long-time raw vegan. I intended to eat a raw diet to cleanse at the week-long retreat, but I felt so incredible that I continued to follow the raw diet for two years and remain vegan 14+ years later.

Dr. Eitches: I was pretty fascinated by the vast data that the majority of chronic conditions that Americans suffer from can be controlled, prevented, or even reversed with lifestyle changes including a plant-based diet. We literally are what we eat. The food choices we make (or are made for us) can either cause inflammation and accelerate chronic disease or, if we choose whole food plant-based diet, for example, our foods can slow, reverse and prevent chronic diseases. I now see it in my office every day.

Dr. Eitches: I think of my role as a holistic approach to primary care. I get to learn about my patient's backgrounds, families, hobbies, and values. I understand their health goals and concerns in this context. I do have conventional training as a board-certified MD and run standard tests and prescribe medications when needed. I also have a board certification in integrative holistic medicine, which I lean into, to recommend supplements and refer to complementary healing modalities. With all of my patients, I always address optimizing nutrition, activity, sleep, and mental wellness.

Dr. Eitches: My nutrition plans are evidence-based and customized for each patient's preferences and underlying conditions. For instance, I recommend a plant-based diet for heart disease, diabetes and cancer, but a gluten-free diet for Hashimoto's, or a dairy-free diet for acne, or a low-FODMAP diet for IBS. In all of these cases, I recommend a three-month trial of the diet to see whether we see a difference in their symptoms or labs. I try to balance these recommendations by focusing on the healthful foods to include rather than on what to avoid. We need to be aware that restrictive diets can be isolating and triggering for some people, so there is no one-size-fits-all.

I do think that everybody should eat more greens and fruits and veggies and that nobody should consume dairy. There is great evidence that a whole-food, plant-based diet decreases cholesterol and blood sugar, decreases cancer risk, decreases inflammation and improves bowel regularity. When a patient is ready to try a plant-based lifestyle I am so excited to guide and encourage them on this journey.

Dr. Eitches: Start with adding plants to every meal. Think about the different types of plant foods: Fruits, veggies, greens, legumes, grains, and nuts, and explore all of them. Get excited about a recipe or a farm-share. Some non-vegan foods are simple to swap out such as dairy for plant-based milk and others can be slowly crowded off of the plate.

Dr. Eitches: I recommend that all vegans have their B12 and homocysteine levels checked yearly. Ideally, our B12 levels should be over 400, and homocysteine should be below 8. We should take a B12 supplement, such as a methylcobalamin lozenge or spray to get to these goals. B12 is hugely important for our energy levels, mood, and neurologic function. I often will check omega 3's, vitamin D and iodineas all of these levels tend to be lower in vegans.

Dr. Eitches: There is some meal planning that has to happen around traveling and events, but it's pretty easy to plan ahead. I do make sure to always have vegan cupcakes on hand, either as a mix or in the freezer, so that my kids never feel left out at a birthday party.

Dr. Eitches: I eat plenty of legumes, especially lentils, black beans and edamame. I sometimes add pea protein to my smoothies. I also love (sprouted, organic, non-GMO) tofu and seitan.

Dr. Eitches: I love food, so I can't pick just one. I do love to make a huge green salad and tofu scramble, which I have a few times a week. I live in LA, where it is easy to order amazing vegan food. Some of my favorites are Thai eggplant with brown rice or papaya salad, Ethiopian platters, Japanese ramen and veggie sushi, Indian bharta or bhindi, and Mexican fajitas or burritos.

Dr. Eiches: I would like my life to be a statement of love and compassion and where it isnt, thats where my work lies. -- Ram Dass

UAB study targets gene associated with Alzheimer’s disease – The Mix

The UAB team identified how the poorly understood BIN1 gene might be player in Alzheimers disease.

The neurons in this image are stained blue, indicating the presence of the BIN1 protein. Points of direct interaction between BIN1 and calcium channels are in purple.Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham are on the track of a gene that might play a role in the development of Alzheimers disease. The research team is studying a gene called BIN1, which was first linked to Alzheimers disease in 2009.

In a paper recently published online in eLife, the team shows that BIN1 helps to regulate the activity of neurons. This may be significant, as too much neuronal activity, known as hyperexcitability, is associated with Alzheimers disease. BIN1 becomes the first gene to be linked to hyperexcitability as a driver of Alzheimers disease.

BIN1 was identified as a risk factor for Alzheimers following large scale studies called genome wide association studies, which looked at the genomes of thousands of people with and without Alzheimers disease.

These genetic studies showed that variants of BIN1 were present in many of the study participants who had Alzheimers, said Erik Roberson, M.D., Ph.D., the Rebecca Gale Professor in the Department of Neurology, School of Medicine, and lead author of the study. The problem was that nobody had a clear idea what BIN1 does in the brain.

Using different ways of increasing BIN1 and measuring neuronal activity, members of Robersons lab found that neurons with higher BIN1 levels fired more often and were more prone to hyperexcitability.

We think thats important because hyperexcitability is now recognized as a feature of early Alzheimers, said Roberson, who is director of the UAB Alzheimers Disease Center and the Center for Neurodegeneration and Experimental Therapeutics. The neurons fire too often, which appears to lead to damage.

Prior studies had linked BIN1 to the Tau protein, which has long been associated with Alzheimers as one of the hallmarks of the disease.

Importantly, we found a key role for Tau in the hyperexcitability caused by BIN1, said Yuliya Voskobiynyk, a senior graduate student in Robersons lab who led the work. Reducing Tau made neurons resistant to the effects on BIN1 on neuronal hyperexcitability. Along with BIN1 and Tau, a third factor is involved: channels that allow calcium into the neuron, which are important for neuronal firing. We found that calcium channels form a complex along with BIN1 and Tau, and reducing Tau not only blocked neuronal hyperexcitability, but also reduced the formation of this complex.

Erik Roberson, M.D., Ph.D.Roberson is quick to point out that this research, conducted in animal models and cell cultures, is very preliminary. Tau is a major research focus for investigators worldwide; but the role of BIN1, and its interactions with Tau and calcium channels, is only starting to be explored.

It seems clear that something about this gene has a role to play in Alzheimers, Roberson said. At this point, we dont know if that role is driven by too much BIN1 protein, too little, or by more subtle changes in the type of BIN1 being made in people with Alzheimers disease.

Roberson says next steps will include digging deeper into the genes normal function within the brain, and then working to understand what happens in Alzheimers disease. His lab was already working to develop drugs that would block the binding between Tau and proteins like BIN1 as potential therapies.

This study helps to establish that there is a connection between Tau, BIN1 and calcium channels, Roberson said. But we need to learn more. We need to understand how they bind and how binding affects their function. If we can zero in on the molecular details of these interactions, we may be able to find new targets for intervention.

The research was supported by the National Institutes of Health grants RF1AG059405, R01NS075487, R01MH114990, T32NS095775 and T32NS061788; the
