At a time when unemployment is skyrocketing in the US and millions of out-of-work Americans have been abandoned by the federal government, it may be of interest to consider how an earlier generation responded to an even greater crisis, the Great Depression (1929-1936). In particular, we might draw inspiration from the remarkable story of the now-forgotten Workers Unemployment Insurance Bill that was introduced in Congress in 1934, 1935, and 1936.

Despite essentially no press coverage and extreme hostility from the business community and the Franklin Roosevelt (FDR) administration, a popular movement developed in support of this bill that had been written by the Communist Party. The mass pressure that was brought to bear on Congress secured a stunning victory in the spring of 1935, when the bill became the first unemployment insurance plan in US history to be recommended by a congressional committee (the House Labor Committee). It was defeated in the House by a vote of 204 to 52 but the widespread support for the bill was likely a factor in the easy passage later in 1935 of the relatively conservative Social Security Act, which laid the foundation for the American welfare state.

Aside from its direct legislative importance, the Workers Bill is of interest in that it shows just how left-wing vast swathes of the US population were in the 1930s and can become when a political force emerges to articulate their grievances. This bill, which was far more radical than provisions in the Soviet Union for social insurance, was endorsed by over 3,500 local unions (and the regular conventions of several International unions and state bodies of the American Federation of Labor), as well as practically every unemployed organization in the country, fraternal lodges, governmental bodies in over seventy cities and counties, and groups representing veterans, farmers, Blacks, women, the youth, and churches. In the West, the South, the Midwest, and the East, millions of citizens signed petitions and postcards in support of it. And this was all despite the active hostility of every sector of society with substantial resources.

It is puzzling, then, that historians have almost entirely overlooked the Workers Bill. For instance, in his book Voices of Protest: Huey Long, Father Coughlin, and the Great Depression, Alan Brinkley doesnt devote a single sentence to it. Neither does Robert McElvaine in his standard history The Great Depression: America, 19291941. David Kennedy devotes half a sentence to it in volume one of his Oxford history of the Depression and World War II, Freedom from Fear: The American People in Depression and War. Instead, the less sophisticated and less radical Townsend Plan for old-age insurance, which was proposed around the same time and was widely publicized in the press, tends to monopolize historians attention (only to be ridiculed). The neglect of the Workers Bill lends credence to a still-dominant interpretation of the American citizenry during the Depression and throughout its history, viz. as being relatively centrist, individualistic, and conservative, especially in comparison with the historically more socialist populations of Western Europe.

Brinkley sums up this strain of thinking derived from the postwar liberal consensus school of historiography, which still influences pundits, politicians, and academics:

The failure of more radical political movements to take root in the 1930s reflected, in part, the absence of a serious radical tradition in American political culture. The rhetoric of class conflict echoed only weakly among men and women steeped in the dominant themes of their nations history; and leaders relying upon that rhetoric faced grave, perhaps insuperable difficulties in attempting to create political coalitions

This is a simplistic interpretation. For one thing, there is a serious radical tradition in American political culture, as embodied, for example, in the Populist movement of the 1890s and the Socialist Party and IWW of the early twentieth century. But even insofar as a case can be made that the rhetoric of class conflict echoe[s]weakly, it is plausible to understand this fact as simply a reflection of the violent repression of class-based movements and parties in American history. When they have a chance to get their message out, they attract substantial support precisely to the extent that they can get their message out. There is no need to invoke deep cultural traditions of individualism or a lack of popular understanding of class. One need only adduce the skewed distribution of resources, which prevents leftists from being heard.

In this article Ill tell the story of the Workers Unemployment Insurance Bill, both to fill a gap in our historical knowledge and because it resonates in our own time of troubles and struggles.

As soon as the Communist Party had unveiled its proposed Workers Unemployment Insurance Bill in the summer of 1930, as the Depression was just beginning, it garnered extensive support among large numbers of the unemployed. The reason isnt hard to fathom: it envisioned an incredibly generous system of insurance. In the form it would eventually assume, it provided for unemployment insurance for workers and farmers (regardless of age, sex, or race) that was to be equal to average local wages but no less than $10 per week plus $3 for each dependent; people compelled to work part-time (because of inability to find full-time jobs) were to receive the difference between their earnings and the average local full-time wages; commissions directly elected by members of workers and farmers organizations were to administer the system; social insurance would be given to the sick and elderly, and maternity benefits would be paid eight weeks before and eight weeks after birth; and the system would be financed by unappropriated funds in the Treasury and by taxes on inheritances, gifts, and individual and corporate incomes above $5,000 a year. Later iterations of the bill went into greater detail on how the system would be financed and managed.

Had the Workers Bill ever been enacted, it would have revolutionized the American political economy. It was a much more authentically socialist plan than existed in the Soviet Union at the time, where only 35 per cent of the customary wage was paid to those not working, and that for only a limited time (unlike with the Workers Bill). Nor was the Soviet insurance system administered democratically by workers representatives.

By 1934, when the plan had become widely enough known to be critically examined by economists and other intellectuals, it was frequently criticized for incentivizing malingering. Defenders of the bill and by then it was advocated by many left-wing economists, teachers, social workers, lawyers, engineers, and other professionals replied that this supposed flaw was in fact a strength. By withdrawing workers from the labor market, it would force wage rates to rise until they at least equaled unemployment benefits. The benefits to the unemployed, economist Paul Douglas noted, could thus be used as a lever to compel industry to pay a living wage to those who were employed. It was the abolition of poverty and economic insecurity that was envisioned by a frontal attack on such fundamentals of capitalism as the private appropriation of wealth, determination of wages by the market, and maintenance of an insecure army of the unemployed.

The Unemployed Councils were at the forefront of agitation for the proposed bill, but it was also publicized through other auxiliary organizations of the Communist Party, in addition to activists in unions. As mass demonstrations for unemployment relief became more frequent daily hunger marches in cities across the country, occupations of state legislative chambers, marches on city halls, eviction riots the demand for unemployment insurance echoed louder and farther every month. From Alaska to Texas, requests for petitions flooded into the New York office of the National Campaign Committee for Unemployment Insurance. United front conferences of Socialist and Communist workers organizations took place from New York City to Gary, Indiana, and beyond. In February 1931 delegates presented the Workers Bill and its hundreds of thousands of signatures to Congress, which ignored them.

So, activists continued drumming up support for the next few years. Hunger marchers in many states demanded that legislatures pass versions of the bill; two national hunger marches the Communist Party organized in December 1931 and 1932 gave the bill further publicity; delegates periodically presented more petitions to Congress, and campaigns were organized to mail postcards to legislators. Despite the fervent hostility and smear campaigns of the national American Federation of Labor (AFL) leadership, several thousand local unions eventually endorsed the bill, especially after it had been sponsored, in 1934, by Representative Ernest Lundeen of the Minnesota Farmer-Labor Party. Its newfound national prominence in that year gave the movement greater momentum, and a new organization was founded to lend the bill intellectual respectability: the Inter-Professional Association for Social Insurance (IPA). Within a year the IPA had dozens of chapters and organizing committees around the country, as distinguished academics like Mary Van Kleeck of the Russell Sage Foundation proselytized for the bill in the press and before Congress.

Meanwhile, conferences of unemployed groups grew ever larger and more ambitious. For instance, in Chicago in September 1934, hundreds of delegates from such groups as the National Unemployed Leagues, the Illinois Workers Alliance, the Eastern Federation of Unemployed and Emergency Workers Union, and the Wisconsin Federation of Unemployed Leagues in the aggregate claiming a membership of 750,000 endorsed the Lundeen Bill (as it was now called) and made increasingly elaborate plans to pressure Congress for its passage.

Congress took essentially no action on the bill in 1934, so Lundeen reintroduced it in January 1935. This would become the year of the Second New Deal, when the Roosevelt administration turned left in response to massive discontent and disillusionment with its policies. Senator Huey Long had become a hero to millions by denouncing the wealthy and proposing his Share Our Wealth program, an implicit criticism of the New Deals conservatism. The radio priest Father Charles Coughlin had acquired heroic stature among yet more millions by constantly talking about a living wage, about profits for the farmer, about government-protected labor unions, as one journalist put it. He insists that human rights be placed above property rights. He emphasizes the wickedness of private financialism and production for profit.

The tens of millions of people who flocked to the banners of Huey Long and Father Coughlin not to mention the Communist Workers Bill (or Lundeen Bill) put the lie to any interpretation of the American people as being irremediably conservative/centrist or wedded to capitalism. During the Great Depression, arguably a majority wanted the US to become, in effect, a radical social democracy, or a socialist democracy.

The hearings in 1935 that were held before the Labor subcommittee on the Lundeen Bill are a remarkable historical document, probably the most unique document ever to appear in the Congressional record, at least according to the executive secretary of the IPA. Eighty witnesses testified: industrial workers, farmers, veterans, professional workers, African-Americans, women, the foreign-born, and youth. Probably never in American history, an editor of the Nation wrote, have the underprivileged had a better opportunity to present their case before Congress. The aggregate of the testimonies amounted to a systematic indictment of American capitalism and the New Deal, and an impassioned defense of the radical alternative under consideration.

From the representative of the American Youth Congress, which encompassed over two million people, to the representative of the United Council of Working-Class Women, which had 10,000 members, each testimony fleshed out the eminently class-conscious point of view of the people back home who had gather[ed] up nickels and pennies which they [could] poorly spare in order to send someone to plead their case before Congress. At the same time, the Social Security Act known then as the Wagner-Lewis Bill, since it hadnt been passed yet was criticized as a cruel sham, a proposal to set up little privileged groups in the sea of misery who would be content to sit on their small islands and watch the others drown (to quote a professor at Smith College). What most Americans wanted, witnesses insisted, was the more universal plan embodied in the Lundeen Bill.

Interestingly, most congressmen on the subcommittee were sympathetic to this point of view. For instance, at one point the chairman, Matthew Dunn, interrupted a witness who was observing that all the members of Congress he had talked to had received far fewer cards and letters in support of the famous Townsend Plan which the press was continually publicizing than in support of the more radical Lundeen Bill. I want to substantiate the statement you just made about the Townsend bill and about this bill, Dunn said. May I say that I do not believe I have received over a half dozen letters to support the Townsend bill [But] I have received many letters and cards from all over the country asking me to give my utmost support in behalf of the Lundeen bill, H.R. 2827.

Many of the letters congressmen received were probably in the vein of this one that was sent to Lundeen in the spring of 1935, when Congress was considering the three competing bills that have already been mentioned (the Wagner-Lewis, the Townsend, and the Lundeen):

The reason I am writing you is, that we Farmers [and] Industrial workers feel that you are the only Congressman and Representative that is working for our interest. We have analyzed the Wagner-Lewis Bill [and] also [the] Townsend Bill. But the Lundeen H.R. (2827) is the only bill that means anything for our class The people all over the country are [waking] up to the facts that the two old Political Parties are owned soul, mind [and] body by the Capitalist Class.

As stated above, while the House Labor Committee recommended the Lundeen Bill, it was inevitably defeated in the House. Being opposed by all the dominant interests in the country, it never had a chance of passage. But as far as its advocates were concerned, the fight was not over. Throughout the spring and summer of 1935 the flood of endorsements did not let up. The first national convention of rank-and-file social workers endorsed it in February; the Progressive Miners of America followed, along with scores of local unions and such ethnic societies as the Italian-American Democratic Organization of New York (with 235,000 members) and the Slovak-American Political Federation of Youngstown, Ohio. Almost identical state versions of H.R. 2827 were, or already had been, introduced in the legislatures of California, Oregon, Utah, Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and other states. Conferences of unions and fraternal organizations were called in a number of states to plan further campaigns for the Workers Bill.

In January 1936, Representative Lundeen introduced the bill yet again, this time joined by Republican Senator Lynn Frazier of North Dakota. It didnt even make it out of committee that year, and was never introduced again.

Despite its failure, the Workers Unemployment Insurance Bill was a significant episode in the 1930s that certainly hasnt deserved to be written out of history. Both substantively and in its popularity, a case can be made that it was more significant than the Social Security Act and the Townsend Plan, its two main competitors.

As a coda to this forgotten story, which reinforces the lesson that most working-class Americans were and are quite left-wing in many of their values and beliefs, we might consider an unusual incident that occurred in March 1936. Earl Browder, head of the American Communist party, was, bizarrely, invited by CBS to speak for fifteen minutes (at 10:45 p.m.) on a national radio broadcast.

He seized the opportunity for this national spotlight and appealed to the majority of the toiling people to establish a national Farmer-Labor Party that would be affiliated with the Communist Party, though it would not yet take up the full program of socialism, for which many are not yet prepared. He even declared that Communists ultimate aim was to remake the US along the lines of the highly successful Soviet Union: once they had the support of a majority of Americans, he said, we will put that program into effect with the same firmness, the same determination, with which Washington and the founding fathers carried through the revolution that established our country, with the same thoroughness with which Lincoln abolished chattel slavery.

According to both CBS and the Daily Worker, reactions to Browders talk were almost uniformly positive. CBS immediately received several hundred responses praising the speech, and the Daily Worker, whose New York address Browder had mentioned on the air, received thousands of letters. The following are representative:

Chattanooga, Tennessee: If you could have listened to the people I know who listened to you, you would have learned that your speech did much to make them realize the importance of forming a Farmer-Labor Party. I am sure that the 15 minutes into which you put so much that is vitally important to the American people was time used to great advantage. Many people are thanking you, I know.

Evanston, Illinois: Just listened to your speech tonight and I think it was the truest talk I ever heard on the radio. Mr. Browder, would it not be a good thing if you would have an opportunity to talk to the people of the U.S.A. at least once a week, for 30 to 60 minutes? Lets hear from you some more, Mr. Browder.

Sparkes, Nebraska: Would you send me 50 copies of your speech over the radio last night? I would like to give them to some of my neighbors who are all farmers.

Arena, New York: Although I am a young Republican (but good American citizen) I enjoyed listening to your radio speech last evening. I believe you told the truth in a convincing manner and I failed to see where you said anything dangerous to the welfare of the American people.

Julesburg, Colorado: Heard your talk It was great. Would like a copy of same, also other dope on your party. It is due time we take a hand in things or there will be no United States left in a few more years. Will be looking forward for this dope and also your address.

In general, the main themes of the letters were questions like, Where can I learn more about the Communist Party? How can I join your Party? and Where is your nearest headquarters? Some people sent money in the hope that it would facilitate more broadcasts. The editors of the Daily Worker plaintively asked their readers, Isnt it time we overhauled our old horse-and-buggy methods of recruiting? While we are recruiting by ones and twos, arent we overlooking hundreds? Again, one can only imagine how many millions of people in far-flung regions would have been quickly radicalized had Browder or other Communist leaders been permitted the national radio audience that Huey Long and Father Coughlin were.

But such is the history of workers and marginalized groups in the US: elite efforts to suppress the political agenda and the voices of the downtrodden have all too often succeeded, thereby wiping out the memory of popular struggles. If we can resurrect such stories as that of the Workers Bill, they may prove of use in our own age of crisis, as new struggles against authoritarianism begin.

A National Call to Remove Cops and Kochs from College Campuses – Progressive.org

When the 2,000-member Graduate Employee Organization (GEO) at the University of Michigans Ann Arbor campus went on strike on September 8, the unions demands focused on two main concerns: COVID-19 safety, and reducing the on-campus police security force by fifty percent.

After the police killings of so many Black people this summer, the movement for Black lives demanded the removal of police from schoolselementary through university.

According to Jeff Horowitz, co-chair of GEOs North Campus Organizing Committee, the university is currently slated to spend $12.5 million on the salaries and benefits of sixty police and 130 security officers, many of them assigned to the Universitys Medical Center in Ann Arbor. Add in the universitys two other campuses in Dearborn and Flint, Horowitz tells The Progressive, and this years policing budget balloons to $17 million.

University of Michigan Students, faculty, and staff see these expenditures as unnecessary and like their colleagues and peers throughout the country, have organized a wide-ranging movement, often using the hashtag #copsoffcampus, to demand greater transparency in university budgetary decisions as well as a reduction in spending on campus security.

Jess Slattery, a senior studying anthropology and economics at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, credits the police murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and others for this Falls surge in campus activism and notes that U-Mass anti-policing campaign, called DEFUND UMPD, is a direct outgrowth of the schools Racial Justice Coalition.

Our goal is to defund the campus police force by 90 percent within five years, Slattery says, to a still high $6.4 million per year. We want to see money moved to programs such as the Center for Women and Community and the Center for Counseling and Psychological Health.

DEFUND UMPD is also demanding an end to police patrols of residential areas on campus. Calling the patrols reminiscent of broken windows policing, where minor infractions become the focus of police attention, Slattery says that the Universitys southwest quadrant is the most heavily patrolled section of campus; not coincidentally, it is where the majority of the schools students of color live.

Transparency in budgetary decision making is also a major concern. Students want stronger pathways so they can be better informed about how the UMPD spends its money, Slattery explains. We want more information to get a fuller picture of police work over the past few years, with access to reports on things like property damage and accidents.

Because of COVID, Slattery reports that most of DEFUND UMPDs work is being done remotely over Zoom. But, she says, despite the challenges of online work, U-Mass students and their faculty supporters are resolute in demanding that administrators take their concerns seriously. Were working to build relationships with every student group and academic department so we'll have the broadest base of support possible as we go forward.

Like DEFUND UMPD, budgetary transparency is also a key focus for activists connected to UnKoch My Campus, a six-year-old national organization founded to expose the influence of big donors on college campuses. The groups #copsoffcampus campaign has developed a police divestment toolkit of sample letters and petitions to school administrators, along with a step-by-step guide on how to file Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. To date, the campaign has a presence on ten campuses, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Tufts.

Jasmine Banks, UnKochs executive director, admits that, though the connection between donor transparency and campus policing may seem tenuous, there is a direct pipeline between the Koch networks promotion of public safety through increased community surveillancetracking devices, cameras, and other electronic monitorsand their efforts to promote limited government, personal responsibility, and unregulated capitalist expansion.

After the police killings of so many Black people this summer, the movement for Black lives demanded the removal of police from schoolselementary through university, Banks explains. Since we are committed to anti-racist action, we knew immediately that creating a digital campaign and helping students with political education, outreach to media, and putting a campaign together was a natural fit with our other work.

Other schools, including Harvard, Northwestern, and all ten campuses of the University of California, have mounted similar anti-policing efforts.

When students at UCLA, for example, got wind that the campus police budget was going to be increased by $519,367 for the 2020-21 academic year, they were outraged.

Victoria Copeland, a Ph.D. student in social welfare, notes that this funding increase is occurring at the same time as fiscal austerity measures are being imposed in other areas of university life. In addition to the economic downturn provoked by COVID-19, she says, UCLAs decision to reduce financial aid packages by $9,000 for some of its students is causing extreme hardship. Its clear, now more than ever, what UCLA deems a priority and its certainly not the lives of its students, she says.

UC students and their faculty supporters find this appalling and have articulated a clear set of demands including the abolition of the entire University of California Police Department and the reallocation of the $138 million expended annually to address community and student needs.

The movement has been building for nearly a year.

Dylan Rodriguez, a professor of media and cultural studies at University of California, Riverside, notes that the current anti-policing efforts grew out of a movement led by graduate students and contingent faculty at University of California, Santa Cruz, last fall. They organized for a Cost of Living Allowance [COLA], and many people on every UC campus supported their living wage campaign. That campaign began with the withholding of fall 2019 grades and became a wildcat strike in the winter 2020 quarter to demand that the university increase their $2,400 monthly stipend by $1,200.

Grad students were living in their cars because they could not afford rent, Rodriguez says. Some were not eating properly. But the administration at Santa Cruz responded by calling in the local police; cops came in full riot gear, with plastic face shields, as if they were going to war. This ignited peoples rage over policing on campus. You can say that the COLA campaign turned into a police abolition campaign.

Colleges and university administrators, meanwhile, argue that having a robust police force on every campus is imperative, not only to maintain public safety but to comply with the 1990 Clery Act, which mandates that all colleges that disburse federal financial aid must record and disclose information about crimes that occur on or near campus.

According to the James S. Martin Center for Academic Renewal, 75 percent of campuses had armed officers on patrol in 2015, up from 68 percent a decade earlier. But its worth noting that patrols are nothing new. Yale University hired New Haven officers to patrol the grounds as early as 1894 to protect buildings from property damage.

While other elite schools quickly followed suit, police ranks remained relatively thin until the 1960s when campus protests escalated and officers were brought in to put down student sit-ins and building takeovers. Still, it was not until 2007, when thirty-two students were murdered on the campus of Virginia Tech, that security began to significantly ramp up.

Although recent statistics are unavailable, the Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that in the 2011-12 school year, 15,000 sworn police officers, 11,000 non-sworn officers, and 5,000 civilians worked in campus law enforcement. Most were authorized to carry firearms, tasers, pepper spray, and tear gas.

More than eight years later, the number of officers is likely similar. In fact, The Atlantic reports that more than 4,000 police departments now patrol public and private campuses across all fifty states.

Activists working to get #copsoffcampus know that theyre fighting an uphill battle, but they nonetheless believe that they will win. There is momentum on police abolition, UC professor Rodriguez concludes. We, as students, faculty, and staff, want to be on the right side of history.

Graduate students at the University of Michigan want that, too, and say that their strike will last as long as it takes to make headway on their demands.

UCSD Researchers Discover Carbohydrate In Lungs That COVID-19 Uses To Infect – KPBS

UC San Diego School of Medicine researchers announced Tuesday they have discovered a carbohydrate that the SARS-CoV-2 virus uses to latch onto a cellular molecule in the lungs, which has potential implications for treatment of COVID-19 patients.

Since January, researchers have known that the novel coronavirus primarily uses a molecule known as ACE2 which sits like a doorknob on the outer surfaces of the cells that line the lungs to enter and infect those cells. Finding a way to lock out that interaction between virus and doorknob as a means to treat the infection has become the goal of many research studies.

The UCSD researchers recently discovered the virus cannot grab onto that ACE2 doorknob without a carbohydrate heparan sulfate, which is also found on lung cell surfaces.

"ACE2 is only part of the story," said Jeffrey Esko, a professor of cellular and molecular medicine at UCSD and co-director of the Glycobiology Research and Training Center. "It isn't the whole picture."

Esko's study, published in the academic journal Cell, introduces a potential new approach for preventing and treating COVID-19.

His team demonstrated two approaches that can reduce the ability of the virus to infect human cells cultured in the lab by about 80 to 90%, either removing heparan sulfate with enzymes or using heparin as bait to lure and bind the coronavirus away from human cells.

Heparin, a form of heparan sulfate, is already a widely used medication to prevent and treat blood clots.

Esko's team has long studied heparan sulfate and the role it plays in health and disease.

The team discovered that the virus binds to heparin. When heparin is bound, the virus is able to bind to ACE2. The virus, the researchers found, must bind both heparan sulfate on the cell surface and ACE2 in order to get inside human lung cells grown in a laboratory dish.

With this viral entry mechanism established, the researchers next set about trying to disrupt it. They found that enzymes that remove heparan sulfate from cell surfaces prevent SARS-CoV-2 from gaining entry into cells. Likewise, treatment with heparin also blocked infection. The heparin treatment worked as an anti-viral at doses currently given to patients, even when the researchers removed the anticoagulant region of the protein the part responsible for preventing blood clots.

Esko cautioned that the findings are still far from translating into a COVID-19 treatment for people.

Researchers will need to test heparin and heparan sulfate inhibitors in animal models of SARS-CoV-2 infection. In a related study, UC San Diego scientists are also exploring the role human microbiomes, including the bacteria that live in and on the body, play in altering heparan sulfate and thus influencing a person's susceptibility to COVID-19.

"This is one of the most exciting periods of my career all of the things we've learned about heparan sulfate and the resources we've developed over the years have come together with a variety of experts across multiple institutions who were quick to collaborate and share ideas," Esko said.

A novel publication in the Nature journal Neuropsychopharmacology asserts that the stress of racism produces an increased risk for mental health disorders like anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder in the Black community, especially in the current climate brought on by COVID-19 and the Black Lives Matter movement, leading to a critical need to utilize science to understand racisms true biological impact.

Wayne State University School of Medicine Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences and the David and Patricia Barron Endowed Chair in PTSD and Trauma Neurobiology Tanja Jovanovic, Ph.D., wrote The critical importance in identifying the biological mechanisms underlying the effects of racism on mental health with Tracy Bale, Ph.D., a professor of Pharmacology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore.

Dr. Jovanovic has studied the impact of trauma on the brain and behavior in primarily African American urban communities for more than 15 years. The focus of her work has been in exposure to neighborhood and domestic violence, and post-traumatic stress disorder. She is now investigating the impact of racial discrimination above and beyond that of other types of trauma.

It is clear that the impact of racism is chronic, pervasive, and for many, unavoidable. Moreover it leaves the brain and body vulnerable to many disorders, including PTSD and many physical diseases, she said.

Her collaborator is a leading expert in understanding the impact of chronic stress on a molecular level. The duo decided to work together to examine the impact of the chronic stress of racism on biology. For a year, they studied biomarkers of stress that are also linked to immune system function.

Weve known for a long time that experiences of racial discrimination have a deep and long-term effect on psychology and mental health, and that there are substantial health disparities in that African American men and women are more likely to suffer from many medical illnesses compared to white individuals, Dr. Jovanovic said. A large part of this is due to systemic racism in health care, however, we believe racism also leaves an imprint on the body, which has not been well understood.

Dr. Bale works primarily with animal models of chronic stress and focuses on epigenetic and proteomic signatures of stress. Dr. Jovanovic focuses on African American women and children with urban trauma exposure who have experienced significant racism.

In writing this article, I contributed the information from individuals in Detroit reporting experiences of racism, especially in the current context of the Black Lives Matter movement, whileDr. Bale reported on the state-of-the art molecular methods that show the greatest promise as biomarkers of chronic stress and immune function, Dr. Jovanovic said.

She wants the field of stress and trauma research to focus on the impact of racism on the brain and the body. The duo are working on a series of grants and publications that describe these biological mechanisms in African American men and women in Detroit.

Black communities have been disproportionally affected by COVID-19; the pandemic has uncovered both systemic disparities and health-related vulnerability. It is truly of critical importance that we understand and mitigate the root causes of these vulnerabilities, she said.

Telomere attrition and inflammatory load in severe psychiatric disorders and in response to psychotropic medications. – Physician’s Weekly

Individuals with severe psychiatric disorders have a reduced life expectancy compared to the general population. At the biological level, patients with these disorders present features that suggest the involvement of accelerated aging, such as increased circulating inflammatory markers and shorter telomere length (TL). To date, the role of the interplay between inflammation and telomere dynamics in the pathophysiology of severe psychiatric disorders has been scarcely investigated. In this study we measured T-lymphocytes TL with quantitative fluorescent in situ hybridization (Q-FISH) and plasma levels of inflammatory markers in a cohort comprised of 40 patients with bipolar disorder (BD), 41 with schizophrenia (SZ), 37 with major depressive disorder (MDD), and 36 non-psychiatric controls (NPC). TL was shorter in SZ and in MDD compared to NPC, while it was longer in BD (model F=20.128, p=8.7310, effect of diagnosis, F=31.870; p=1.0810). There was no effect of the different classes of psychotropic medications, while duration of treatment with mood stabilizers was associated with longer TL (Partial correlation controlled for age and BMI: correlation coefficient = 0.451; p=0.001). Levels of high-sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hsCRP) were higher in SZ compared to NPC (adjusted p=0.027), and inversely correlated with TL in the whole sample (r=-0.180; p=0.042). Compared to NPC, patients with treatment resistant (TR) SZ had shorter TL (p=0.001), while patients with TR MDD had higher levels of tumor necrosis factor- (TNF) compared to NPC (p=0.028) and to non-TR (p=0.039). Comorbidity with cardio-metabolic disorders did not influence the observed differences in TL, hsCRP, and TNF among the diagnostic groups. Highly Revered Cardiologist Dr. James T. Willerson Passes Away at St. Luke’s in Houston – PaperCity Magazine

Cardiologist to the whos who of Houston for decades, Dr. James T. Willerson died at CHI St. Lukes Hospital Wednesday as the result of a long illness. He was 80. Most recently serving as president emeritus of the Texas Heart Institute, Willerson was recognized internationally for seminal research in stem cells for the repair of hearts and cardiovascular vessels injured by heart attacks.

Among those who counted Willerson as both a friend and personal cardiologist were former Secretarty of State James A. Baker, former Houston Mayor Bob Lanier, philanthropists Margaret Williams and Jeanie Kilroy, art dealer Meredith Long, famed restaurateur Tony Vallone and even famed heart surgeon Dr. Denton Cooley.

In fact, Willerson credited his meeting with Cooley when he was 14 years old, at a time when Cooley and his team had performed 10,000 heart operations, with leading him into cardiology. It was the beginning of a lifelong friendship and collaboration at the Texas Heart Institute.

So committed to his patients, Willerson was known to return phone calls to them back in Houston whether he was in China, Turkey or South America. His quiet nature and often abrupt manner in the exam room would belie his intense passion for serving his patients. He was at the very least once seen weeping at the funeral of one of his patients.

On the Texas Heart Institute Website, THI board chairman Eric Wade notes, Dr. Willerson lived a tremendous life defined by curiosity and an eternally burning flame for the study of the human heart and its myriad complexities, and on behalf of the Texas Heart Institute Board of Trustees, it is with a heavy heart that I share the news of his passing.

His bio at Texas Heart Institute tallies his numerous lauded positions and accolades: President of The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston from 2001-2008, recently retired as the Edward Randall III Professor of Internal Medicine at The UT Medical School at Houston. He holds the Dunn Chair in Cardiology Research at THI, the Willerson/OQuinn Chair at THI, the James T. Willerson, MD Distinguished Chair in Cardiovascular Diseases at UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and The Institute of Molecular Medicine IMM at the University of U.T. Health Houston. He has been named a Distinguished Alumnus at the University of Texas, Austin, and at the Baylor College of Medicine. A swimming scholarship is named in his honor at The University of Texas at Austin.

Born in Lampasas to two physicians, Willerson graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Texas where he led the swimming team to a state championship. But it was UT football that was his passion second only to medicine. He attended Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and completed his training in internal medicine and cardiology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and Harvard Medical School.

UK research getting to bottom of COVID clots – ABC 36 News – WTVQ

The research led by Jeremy Wood, Zach Porterfield and Jamie Sturgill in the Department of Internal Medicine; Beth Garvy in Microbiology, Immunology & Molecular Genetics; and Wally Whiteheart in Molecular & Cellular Biochemistry, suggests localized inflammation in the lungs caused by COVID-19 may be responsible for the increased presence of blood clots in patients.

The study also provides evidence suggesting the risk of thrombosis could persist after the infection clears.

The study examined the blood of 30 COVID-19 patients including 15 who were inpatients in the intensive care unit, and 15 who received care as outpatients at UKs Infectious Diseases Clinic, along with eight disease-free volunteers who acted as a control group.

Compared to baseline, the COVID-19 patients had elevated levels of tissue factor, a protein found in blood that initiates the clotting process. Patients also had reduced levels of protein S, an anticoagulant that helps prevent blood clotting.

The researchers concluded that lung inflammation caused by COVID-19 is what leads to a decrease in protein S. Thisinflammation also causes immune and possible endothelial cell activation, which leads to increased tissue factor protein.

What weve learned is that the clotting is not caused by anything systemic. Localized inflammation in the lungs is whats driving this whole process, Wood said. With an increase in tissue factor and a deficiency in protein S, COVID-19 patients get more blood clotting without the ability to shut it down or control it.

The study additionally showed that protein S levels remained low in some patients even after they tested negative for COVID-19, which suggests that blood clotting issues may persist after infection and long-term monitoring of thrombotic risk may be necessary.

Wood says this preliminary data could be a cause for concern. Certain viruses like HIV are linked to a long-term deficiency in protein S, which causes an ongoing risk of thrombosis in patients. It is not yet known if COVID-19 could cause a similar persisting protein S deficiency.

Tissue factor and protein S are good markers to monitor for long-term thrombosis risk and the data suggest that we need to be monitoring these patients because were not seeing these parameters corrected immediately, Wood said.

The research team recently received a grant from UKsCenter for Clinical and Translational Science(CCTS) to begin a longitudinal study to look at these levels in patients over the next year.

This will help answer the question: will this risk remain like it is in the HIV patients or will it go away?

The study was funded in part by anAlliance Grantthrough the College of Medicine as well as UKsCOVID-19 Unified Research Experts (CURE) Alliancethroughthe Vice President for Research and the College of Medicine and the CCTS. It was a product of collaboration between a number of different groups at UK that have been studying COVID-19.

Michael Caputo, the Health and Human Services assistant secretary for public affairs, acknowledged Saturday that since June, he and an adviser havescrutinized and at times pushed for changes toa weekly health report distributed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The meddling, first reported by Politico,included efforts to stop the publication of a report last week on the use of hydroxychloroquine,a malaria drug often touted by Trump, delaya10-state study of COVID-19 infection statistics in Juneand another on the spread of coronavirus at a Georgia sleep-away camp.

The Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report is a series of dry and sometimes dense briefupdates on public health incidents that comeout on Thursdays. They typically describeevents or topicsand are an important way for doctors and health officials to get the latest data.

Monday, members of the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis sent a letter to HHS Secretary AlexAzar and CDC Director Robert Redfield requesting documents pertaining to the efforts to block the publicationof "accurate scientific reports."

"We are gravely concerned by reports showing that the Presidents political appointees at HHS have sought to help him downplay the risks of the coronavirus crisis by attempting to alter, delay, and block critical scientific reports from CDC," the letter said.

That involvement was previously restricted to officials within the agency who let political leaders know what was coming so they could be prepared with a communicationstrategy, said Remington, associate dean for public health at the School of Medicine and Public Health at theUniversity of Wisconsin-Madison.

What is unusual is the allegation that the political process is attempting to influence the scientific conclusions. And thats a concern, Remington said.

A member of the editorial board for 14 years, Remington said the body meets roughly once a year to help decide the publication's big-picture vision. Its most recent meeting was in February.

The board is not involved in the publication's day-to-day operations, and members knew nothing about the accusations of interferenceuntil they read about them, he and others said.

The big issue here in my mind is the fundamental undermining of trust, he said, both in the CDC generallyand among the public health practitioners who rely on the MMWR to make policy decisions. If that very foundation is being politicized, its incredibly alarming.

Regaining trust is a challenge, he said, and should begin with an immediate response from the CDC, which has not commented on the allegations.

If the concerns are confirmed, Niederdeppe said, Id be interested in convening with the other members of the MMWR editorial board to figure out what we could do in this role.

The Notes from the Field section of the MMWR previews small investigations by state or local health departments that illustrate a specific problem.

Theyre like an alert mechanism, Schaffner said.

MMWRs have described American heat-related deaths by sex and age, top foods contributing to high-salt intake, an outbreak of tuberculosis among workers at food processing plants and drinking rates among pregnant women.

Dr. Jennifer Kates, senior vice president of the nonprofit Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, which focuseson health issues, described the MMWR as the go-to public health publication.

The MMWR predates the CDC, beginning as a publication of the U.S. Public Health Servicein 1878.

Kates said she was disturbed by what appears to be the insertion of politics into a well-respected scientific journal. In general, the politicization of COVID has been the enemy of public health, she said.

MMWR reports are written by CDC staff, as well as public health workers and physicians nationwide. The one- to two-page reports are known for their meticulous and careful editing, a process those who'vegone through it described as harrowing.

The financing was co-led by Canaan Partners, Samsara BioCapital and The Column Group, with participation from other undisclosed investors. Synthekine was founded by K. Christopher Garcia, Ph.D., to leverage discoveries showing that cytokines can be tuned to enhance their therapeutic effects.

Synthekine combines strengths in immunology, structural insights on cytokines and multiple engineering technologies to create optimized therapeutics against new and validated cytokine targets for the treatment of cancer and autoimmune disorders. Proceeds from this Series A financing will be used to advance Synthekines lead therapeutic programs into clinical studies, expand its discovery pipeline and hone its proprietary cytokine engineering platforms. Chris Garcia has shown, for a wide range of therapeutically important cytokines, that cytokine efficacy and toxicity can be decoupled through structure-based protein engineering. Unlocking cytokine therapeutics through unique structural biology insights

Cytokines are small, soluble proteins that are powerful regulators of the immune system and can stimulate a wide range of immune cells, primarily driven by their binding and interaction with cell surface receptors. Most cytokines are pleiotropic, meaning that a given cytokine can exert a range of responses across multiple cell types. Pleiotropy has proven to be a significant obstacle in the development of cytokine therapeutics. Existing cytokine therapeutics, such as aldesleukin (Proleukin) and interferons, demonstrate meaningful efficacy in cancer and other diseases but are limited by significant side effects.

Synthekine has licensed several cytokine programs and platforms from Stanford University. These 8 books will school you in psychedelics – Big Think

UC Berkeley recently announced the launch of its center for psychedelic research and education, thanks to an anonymous $1.25 million donation. This follows Imperial College London's 2019 founding of The Centre for Psychedelic Research and Johns Hopkins's Center for Psychedelic & Consciousness Research. The U.S. company, MindMed, which is working on clinical studies on ibogaine's efficacy in treating addiction, is planning an IPO. A host of similar Canadian companies have already entered that country's stock market.

What a long, strange trip it's been.

As psychedelics are catapulted into the mainstream, the following eight books cover a range of related topics, including clinical research and anecdotal tales. Whether you're an advocate, a newbie, or just curious, these books provide a great education on the therapeutic and spiritual potential of the psychedelic ritual.

Science journalist James Kingland takes a broad view of altered states of consciousness, including lucid dreaming, virtual reality, hypnotic trances, and microdosing (and larger doses) with psychedelics. His journeys with ayahuasca, LSD, and psilocybin recount intense personal experiences and are worthwhile for anyone interested in the science behind these substances. In the end, Kingsland reminds us the real work of any trip is done in sobriety.

"In some ways the trip is the easy bit. The hard work starts when you try to integrate the lessons you have learned into ordinary life."

Northwestern pharmacology professor Richard J Miller was exposed to the power of psychedelics while attending Woodstock. This "religious experience" inspired his career in pharmacology. He wanted to discover how substances can alter neurochemistry this profoundly. In "Drugged," Miller investigates a range of mind-changing substances, including coffee, opium, cannabis, and antidepressants. The chapters devoted to psychedelics provide a great overview of their clinical and spiritual applications.

"The powerful effects of natural products such as Amanita muscaria or ergot suggest that they contain important chemical substances that, if isolated and understood from the structural point of view, might provide us with new insights into disease mechanisms or potential therapeutic opportunities for treating diseases."

UCLA Medical Center professor of Psychiatry & Biobehavioral Sciences, Charles Grob, was the first researcher approved to clinically study MDMA and ayahuasca in the '90s. His pioneering (and continued) work in these fields has pushed the field of psychedelic research forward. This 2002 collection features the writings of Ralph Metzner, Terence McKenna, Huston Smith, Rick Strassman, and an interview with Dr. Andrew Weil. The book closes with three exceptional essays by Grob on the psychology of ayahuasca, the politics of MDMA research, and psychiatric research with hallucinogens.

As Weil says of his experiences with psychedelics,

"It can give you a vision of possibility, but then it doesn't show you anything about maintaining that possibility. When the vision goes, the drug wears off, you are back where you were, you haven't learned anything but you have seen that something is possible. It is then up to you to figure out how to manifest the possibility.

This 1998 encyclopedia of psychedelic plants and fungi is the bible of cosmonauts. Everything is covered: history, culture, pharmacology, therapeutic applications, regional distinctions, chemistry, maps, and tons of photos. This resource should be in any serious cosmonaut's library. While grounded in research and respectful of the cultures that practice plant medicine, the trio of experts also understand their broader context.

"The psychic changes and unusual states of consciousness induced by hallucinogens are so far removed from similarity with ordinary life that it is scarcely possible to describe them in a language of daily living. A person under the effects of a hallucinogen forsakes his familiar world and operates under other standards, in strange dimensions and in a different time."

Richard Louis Miller has been a clinical psychologist for over a half-century. He's also the host of a popular syndicated talk radio show, where he discusses health, mindfulness, and politics. This platform led him to explore psychedelics in a broad scientific and political context.

This book is a collection of interviews from his show, featuring David Nichols, Stanislav Grof, Charles Grob, Roland Griffiths, Amanda Feilding, and Dennis McKenna. They cover a range of issues, such as MDMA as a therapy for PTSD, the efficacy of the current psychiatric paradigm, and psilocybin in depression treatment. These invaluable conversations include this important insight from MAPS founder, Rick Doblin.

"The other word to which mescalin admitted me was not the world of visions; it existed out there, in what I could see with my eyes open. The great change was in the realm of objective fact. What had happened to my subjective universe was relatively unimportant."

When you get the message, hang up the phone. That summates the British philosopher's take on psychedelics. While his lane was more meditation and philosophy than drugsthough he was known for enjoying a drinkWatts has plenty to offer on altered states. Watts applies a critical eye to the slacker looking to get off on drugs, yet also recognizes the essential need for connection to nature in an ever-speedy societythis book was published in 1962. That's the thing about reading Watts: it always catches up to you, wherever you happen to be, trademark humor and all.

"It is not really healthy for monks to practice fasting, and it was hardly hygienic for Jesus to get himself crucified, but these are risks taken in the course of spiritual adventures."

This correspondence between two of the Beat generation's top writers is a gem. Burroughs spent months traveling around South America looking for the legendary ayahuasca (yage), long before private planes shuffled Silicon Valley execs to glamping retreats. How COVID-19 Has Impacted the Psychedelic Community | High Times – High Times

Doug, a 43-year-old startup CFO in San Francisco, attended several ayahuasca ceremonies during the COVID-19 quarantine but he didnt leave his home for them. Instead, the leader shipped him and other experienced participants the ayahuasca, and they prepared over Zoom calls and Signal threads. Then, they all held their own ceremonies at the same time, physically solo, but energetically together, he explains. I sure miss the physical container, and you can feel the difference in terms of energy, but you can build a different level of intimacy with the medicine.

John White, owner of the online cannabis resource CNBS.org, attended a virtual ayahuasca ceremony during the pandemic as well after receiving the ayahuasca at an in-person ceremony in anticipation of lockdown. In his case, the participants actually communicated with one another over Skype. Having to set up your own space is quite therapeutic in itself, as you can tailor the conditions for yourself, he says.

Its not just clandestine ceremonies that are adapting their operations to the digital age in the face of the coronavirus. The New York City mental health clinic Mindbloom began offering remote ketamine therapy sessions before the pandemic, and social distancing imperatives motivated the company to further develop it. Patients are prescribed ketamine tablets that they can take at home, and a clinician video-chats with them while theyre under the effects.

With the onset of COVID, weve seen an astounding increase in both the number of people seeking treatment and severity of their symptoms, says Mindblooms founder and CEO Dylan Beynon. This pandemic has changed the paradigm for increasing access to mental healthcare. Telehealth is the future, and harnessing the dual powers of technology and psychedelic medicine has allowed us to help more people in more places than we could have imagined.

Virtual ceremonies and treatments constitute several of many ways the psychedelic community has responded to the coronavirus pandemic. Some practitioners, in fact, have continued their operations and made modifications to protect clients. The Inscape Recovery program, an ibogaine aftercare drug and alcohol rehabilitation program in Central Mexico that uses ayahuasca as part of their treatment protocol, restricted guests to those already in Mexico and required that they sit spaced apart during ceremonies, according to David Wagner, who runs the program.

David Mahjoubi, MD, founder of Ketamine Healing Clinic of Los Angeles, similarly decided to keep his clinic open, but he spread out appointments to minimize the number of people in the reception area, required that staff wear face masks, and asked patients who had recently traveled, felt sick, or come in contact with someone who was sick to wait two weeks before coming in.

I realized the quarantine was becoming very difficult for many people based on the calls we were getting, he says. So we decided to stay open to offer infusions for depression and anxiety exacerbated or caused by the quarantine and world events. Additionally, I have many patients who come in for maintenance infusions every month. Leaving these patients without a much-needed treatment wasnt something I was willing to do.

Whether a psychedelic ceremony or healing session can be safely carried out amid the virus depends on how effectively social distancing guidelines are upheld, says James Giordano, professor of neurology and biochemistry at Georgetown University Medical Center. Practitioners would need to make sure that participants were spaced apart, that there was no smoke being blown into the air, and that no utensils were being shared.

The other problem with ceremonies is that sometimes the emotionality of the ceremony is such that people might become cavalier in some of their precautions, which is why its important to have a mediator whos able to enforce that level of non-exchange, he adds.

For this reason and others, some have made the choice to play it safe and cease operations until the pandemic is over. Dimitri Mugianis, who facilitates iboga retreats through his company Iboga Revolution, finds it concerning that some have continued holding plant medicine ceremonies during the pandemic. Youre talking about really close quarters, he says. Often, you have to touch someone to comfort them. Theyre not aware of normal boundaries, and some people are vomiting. And the reality is, its not an emergency situation.

Mugianis says his business has been down 70 percent since hes canceled ceremonies. To compensate, hes been running an online version of his Psychedelic Disintegration group, where people discuss their experiences with psychedelics, and counseling people regarding their psychedelic and addiction recovery experiences over the phone.

Tricia Eastman, whose company Psychedelic Journeys organizes psychedelic retreats, made a similar decision to halt retreats and focus on counseling work that can be done remotely. She was concerned that participants could either spread the virus to one another or have to miss the retreats if they got sick.

The fact that Eastmans retreats require travel also would have complicated matters and increased risk. It really doesnt make sense to have people going through airports when things are very stressful. Its not a good energy, she says. We want the experience to be as comfortable as possible because youre going to do hard work with yourself.

While many psychedelic therapy and ceremony providers businesses have taken a hit, the pandemic has also forced people to innovate in ways that can help people long after its over. Virtual ceremonies, remote psychedelic therapy sessions, and online integration groups have opened up the potential to make these services available to people all over the world who might not otherwise access them.

Eastman, in fact, believes this is an opportunity to exercise the attitude of surrender that psychedelics teach us, and we will come out better on the other side. This is a time of global reset, she explains. This is a time where we kind of already are in a plant medicine journey. This is an initiation. It has a lot of the same qualities that you would experience in terms of the different things that are being purged out of the collective and the inner reflection that is happening by shutting down the planet and having to sit and be with yourself. Im just listening to what I feel is the trajectory that were on, and I really have learned from this work that when you trust, you dont resist whatever is happening and how that wants to happen.

Bitcoin sentiment at record lows Does it mean the price will go up? – Cointelegraph

A number of metrics indicate that social and trading sentiment for Bitcoin is still low despite its price breaking above $11,000 a couple of hours ago.

On-chain analytics provider Santiment has revealed that weighted social sentiment for Bitcoin is at its lowest level for two years. The metric takes into account the overall volume of Bitcoin mentions on Twitter and compares the ratio of positive vs. negative commentary on the platform.

Social sentiment surged a few months ago when Bitcoin started its strong recovery following the pandemic-induced market crash in mid-March. However, for most of May, June and July, when the asset was consolidating in the low $9,000 range, it fell into negative territory again.

The analytics provider noted that, counterintuitively, negative sentiment at extremely low levels correlates with price rises, whereas extreme highs correlate with price retracements.

Bitcoin reached a 2020 high of $12,400 in mid-August, but has failed to top 2019s peak of $13,800 leading a number of analysts to assert that the lower high on the longtime frame indicates that we are not in a bull market just yet.

Another market sentiment gauge is the Bitcoin Fear and Greed Index, which is currently showing a neutral reading of 48 at the time of writing. This metric is derived from a combination of factors such as volatility, market momentum and volume, social media interaction, market dominance, and current trend.

For most of August, the index was in the extreme greed zone at around 80 as Bitcoin traded in the high $11,000 range. Its lowest levels unsurprisingly were in March and April when extreme fear gripped global markets.

Popular charting platform Tradingview also has its own sentiment indicators for the asset derived from a number of technical indicators. On the daily and weekly views, they are flashing buy signals, whereas things are more neutral on the shorter time frames.

Bitcoin has been largely correlated to stock market movements for much of this year; however, the September effect is a term that has come about because it is a historically weak month for stock market and cryptocurrency price returns (as Kraken pointed out in its most recent update). This could be reflected in social sentiment as reported by Santiment.

At the time of writing, Bitcoin was still trading just above $11,000, a gain of 2.8% on the day and almost 8% on the week.

Traders are usually skeptical as Bitcoin (BTC) approaches key resistances, and there was no exception as the price added 7.7% to attack the $11K level.

Not every rally will shift technical indicators to overbought levels, but there is usually some gain in volume and futures contracts sentiment that may transition from neutral to bullish. Derivatives markets are especially sensitive to trend changes due to leverage.

Yesterday, as Bitcoin price closed in on $11K, Cointelegraph cautioned that the move shouldn't raise hopes too high as rejection at this level could be followed by heavy downside.

Let's analyze the most recent price movement that culminated with yesterday's $10,960 close.

Take notice how there hasn't been much resistance over the past three days during the 8% rally. $11K seems more a psychological barrier than a resistance, but there are currently no signals that traders are confident after the recent price recovery.

Considering the price increase over the past three days, derivatives indicators and the top traders net long/short ratio should have shifted accordingly. Thus, the best place to start is by looking at BTC futures activity

Any optimism from buyers should be reflected in the futures contracts funding rate. These perpetual futures contracts, also known as inverse swaps, have an embedded fee for margin usage.

At most exchanges, the funding rates are usually changed every 8 hours. If buyers are using more leverage than sellers, the funding rate will be positive; hence buyers are the ones paying it. The opposite occurs when future contracts sellers (shorts) are demanding more margin.

Not every bull run will lead to a positive funding rate. Nevertheless, it is very unusual for positive moves to happen during periods where the funding is negative.

Even if there are no additional positions created during bull runs, the liquidation of short-sellers will cause the funding rate to go up. This is caused by decreasing demand for leverage shorts traders, but usually it is also accompanied by buyers adding long positions.

The data above shows a brief moment of optimism as the funding rate turned positive on Sept. 2 ahead of the drop below $11K. Since then, the indicator turned negative, and there is no indication of bullishness.

Variations between -0.05% and +0.05% fees per 8-hours are considered quite normal and, therefore, a neutral indicator. This is equivalent to -1% to +1% per week, so unless it is kept for an extended period, it is uneventful.

Volume is the one unquestionable indicator, regardless of whether one is doing technical or fundamental analysis. Any significant move not backed by a sizable trading activity becomes doubtful in traders and analysts' minds.

Data from Messari shows the adjusted aggregated volume at $2.15 billion Bitcoin for Sept. 15 and 16. Although 13% above the previous 7-day average, it is still far below the $3 billion peak levels seen over the past two months.

This is another telling signal that the BTC rally initiated a week ago seems to be fading away rather than gaining strength for continuation to $12K.

Binance provides data on the top traders' long-to-short net positioning. This is an excellent indicator to determine whether professional traders are leaning bullish or bearish.

OKEx has a slightly different indicator, measuring top traders sentiment. Considering the difference in methodologies, one should monitor changes in each index instead of absolute numbers.

Binance futures top traders remain net long, although the current 1.12 ratio is the lowest figure recorded since July 25 (8 weeks ago). A similar trend is depicted in the OKEx top traders sentiment metric, which has declined to 0.80 from a 1.18 peak on Sept. 3.

These indicators reinforce the previously discussed volume and funding rate analysis and show a lack of strength behind the recent BTC recovery from the sub-$10K level.

It is also worth noting that there are absolutely no bearish signals from any of these indicators. Instead, the market shows that traders are either in mild disbelief or simply are disinterested in participating at the current levels.
