Intelligent automation will play a critical role in shaping a new, technologically-enabled, post-pandemic future of work, according to new research by Pegasystems, the software company empowering Digital Transformation at some of the worlds leading enterprises. The global study, conducted by research firm, Savanta, surveyed over 3,000 global senior managers and frontline IT staff for their thoughts on technologys future role in a significantly altered business landscape.

The research found that preparedness for future pandemics or similar disruptions was still the main focus for many, with an overwhelming majority (84%) of respondents identifying it as a high priority an unsurprising figure when you consider that nearly one in three (31%) said they were either totally unprepared or not very prepared for the impact of COVID-19. It also found that intelligent automation has emerged as one of the key technologies used to future-proofbusinesses against disruptive events.

A total of 76% of respondents said the pandemic will cause them to increase their intelligent automation investment. Meanwhile, 74% of survey participants agree that further external shocks that temporarily remove people from the workplace will result in more intelligent automation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) investment, while 76% also say that unpredictable mass illness and/or self-isolation will drive increased business demand for intelligent automation. Over half (51%) of respondents also said they would increase investment in AI and cloud solutions to guard against the business impact of future pandemics.

More broadly, the study found that technology will have a profound effect on the way we work in the future, with 86% of respondents expecting technology to either significantly change or produce quite a lot of change in the way people in their organisation work over the next five years. Tellingly, 0% of respondents said that technology would drive no change over that period.

The current global pandemic has placed more impetus on businesses to digitally transform in order to continue supporting their employees while they work from home, in the same way as they would be supported working on-premise. The shift to fluid working has increased the demand on IT and security teams, which they must continue to meet at the same level as before, even though they may have less resources available.

Promoting a shift-left approach with hyper-automation and moving problem resolution as close to the end-user as possible can do much for cybersecurity. Hyper-automation means autonomous discovery can take place to continuously monitor for changes to the IT environment, giving security teams maximum visibility. Musk downplays vehicle-to-grid technology: It has lower utility than you think – The Driven

Tesla boss Elon Musk has downplayed hopes that the companys high performing and best selling electric cars will soon be delivering vehicle to grid (V2G) options, saying that the utility of the service is overplayed.

Vehicle to grid sounds good but has much lower utility than people think, Musk said in response to questions at the conclusion of the companys Battery Day presentation, which unveiled improvements that will lead to a halving in battery costs and a 50 per cent-plus improvement in range.

Musks line was basically this, that unless you have your power cut off at your home, then sending back energy to the grid is just creating a back-flow on the network, and while there were many who thought V2G could deliver essential services to the grid at times, it could restrict peoples ability to drive when they want.

People want the freedom to be able to drive, and charge at their house, he said.

V2G, or Vehicle to Home is seen as a major new development in the switch to a renewables-based grid because the amount of energy stored in a mostly electric transport fleet could be considerable.

Numerous trials are occurring in Australia and overseas to test the technology and how it would work, and grid operators are openly talking about how to plug in to that potentially massive storage capacity. Some car manufacturers, such as Nissan, are already rolling out V2G capable cars, such as the new Nissan Leaf.

Musk and Tesla have some reason not to be so enthusiastic about it, even if the new developments in battery storage technology deliver longer life batteries that may not be so impacted by the more regular cycling in V2G.

Tesla has a rival product the stationary storage units such as Powerwalls and also has grand plans for autonomous driving, creating a fleet of robo-taxis that will be in near continuous use, at least when they are not charging. That means it might come down to how much an EV is paid to provide services to the grid compared to operating as a transport service.

It will be problematic if you get to the morning, and instead of being charged, (the car) has discharged, Musk said. It will be better to have a Powerwall and a car operating separately. Then everything works.

The irony is that Musk suggested that providing the V2G in a Tesla EV could be as simple as updating the software. And he said it was offered in the companys first product, the Roadster but nobody used it (which is perhaps not surprising given the nature of the vehicle).

An alternative road for decarbonisation of heavy-duty freight transport is through indirect electrification with renewable liquid electro-fuels in combination with fuel cell technology or internal combustion engines. Liquid fuels, such as methanol (CH3OH), produced from renewable electricity are highly compatible with existing distribution and refuelling technologies enabling a cost-effective, safe, and flexible transition from fossil-based fuels to renewable and CO2-neutral fuels. The future of heavy-duty freight carriers is most likely to be a combination of different drivetrain technologies designed to meet specific demands and operations in specific areas.

Fuel cells is a prominent technology for indirect electrification through renewably produced methanol to overcome the inherent disadvantages of batteries in heavy-duty applications. A methanol fuel cell drivetrain is equipped with an onboard reformer converting the liquid methanol into a hydrogen-rich gas. The fuel cell converts the reformate gas into electricity powering the electric motors. The combination of onboard reforming and high-temperature PEM fuel cells creates a thermal symbiosis offering high electrical efficiency while eliminating NOx, SOx and particle (PM) emissions. Methanol from biomass and renewable origin also eliminates CO2 emissions from a well-to-wheel perspective and truly enables CO2-neutral mobility.

Methanol is a high-density energy carrier which is liquid at atmospheric pressure making it simple and cost-effective to refuel and store in large volumes onboard heavy-duty vehicles. Providing high vehicle availability, long driving range, and superior drivetrain energy density, methanol is comparable with diesel engine heavy-duty trucks and it exceeds beyond batteries and other renewable energy carriers. A high drivetrain energy density enables equivalent payload as todays diesel trucks is an essential element for transportation companies. Compared to hydrogen-powered fuel cells, a methanol fuel cell system eliminates some of the difficult challenges linked to handling and distribution, infrastructure investments, and low volumetric energy density.

Light and heavy-duty freight trucks account for 27.9% of all road transport emissions in Europe and in connection to the Paris Agreements goal of becoming climate-neutral in 2050, it requires fundamental changes to production and usage of transportation fuels to meet the goals. Methanol is already commonly used in the industry, and therefore widely available around the globe. Today, methanol is mainly produced from natural gas and coal, however, with the ongoing expansion of renewable energy production from wind and solar, the need for energy storage and Power-to-X solutions are on the rise and multiple businesses throughout Europe are already exploring the potential of converting different feedstocks, including renewable electricity, biomass and solid waste, into methanol. The potential applications for renewable methanol are endless. Methanol is already used in maritime applications, light and heavy-duty transportation, passenger vehicles, and for stationary power generation. In China, Geely commercial vehicle brand has developed the worlds first pure methanol combustion heavy-duty truck providing significant reductions of CO2 and other tailpipe emissions. Methanol is a biodegradable and clean-burning fuel, and MAN Energy Solutions has developed a dual-fuel methanol engine to meet the stringent emission regulations in sea freight transport. Multiple countries, including Denmark, are exploring different blending strategies to reduce CO2 emissions from combustion engine vehicles. A methanol/gasoline blended fuel for existing gasoline vehicles is a cost-effective approach for achieving CO2 reductions while avoiding massive investments in new vehicles and infrastructure development, as methanol is compatible with the existing refuelling facilities.

The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH)awarded seven companies and academic institutions grants to develop digital health technology to help with the COVID-19 pandemic. These technologies include things such as smartphone apps, wearable devices and software. The winners were:

Evidation Health. Based in San Mateo, California, Evidation will work on developing a health measurement platform that can analyze a variety of patient-consented data to detect COVID-19 and differentiate it from influenza.

IBM. Headquartered in Armonk, New York, IBMs integrated solution will support contact tracing and verifiable health status reporting.

iCrypto. Located in Santa Clara, California, iCrypto is developing a smartphone-based platform to provide irrefutable proof of testing, serologic and vaccination status for individuals.

physIQ. Based in Chicago, physIQ is working on an artificial intelligence (AI)-based data analytics and cloud computing platform with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-cleared wearable devices. The goal is to create a personalized baseline index that would indicate a change in health status for people who tested positive for COVID-19.

Shee Atika Enterprise. Located in Sitka, Alaska, Shee Atika is developing a smartphone-based platform to monitor and support individuals with COVID-19 symptoms who may need testing and those who have tested positive already. It will integrate a Bluetooth-enabled thermometer and pulse oximeter.

University of California, San Francisco. UCSF is working on a GPS-based retroactive contact-tracing tool to alert users about contact with COVID-19-positive people and identifying businesses that were visited by people that later tested positive.

Vibrent Health. Headquartered in Fairfax, Virginia, Vibrent is developing mobile apps, data integrations, and validated machine learning algorithms to identify COVID-19 and differentiate it from influenza and to perform contact tracing leveraging Wi-Fi technology.

The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) also awarded a separate contract to CareEvolution, based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, for SAFER-COVID, a digital health solution that integrates self-reported symptoms, collects data from consumer wearables, electronic health record and data claims, and COVID-19 test results.

The tools these organizations plan to develop could allow us to use containment efforts, like COVID-19 testing, social distancing, and quarantine, precisely when and where theyre needed, stated NCI Director Norman E. Ned Sharpless. That might let more people return to less restricted living and reduce the risk of devastating local outbreaks. We are working as quickly as possible to help businesses and universities develop innovative tools to achieve this goal.

The seven projects were chosen from 200 different proposals by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and NIBIB, both part of NIH. The awards are part of the two organizations congressionally supported responses to COVID-19, and include NCIs $306 million effort to support serological science research, expand the U.S. testing capacity for COVID-19, and develop other technologies.

The contracts will be granted in two phases. The initial awards for phase one will be to demonstrate each projects feasibility. After phase one is evaluated, phase two offers a contractual option that would provide more funding for further development. If all seven projects move into the second phase, the total contracts would be worth $22.8 million. All recipients have one year to complete both phases.

Long-term COVID-19 containment will be shaped by strength and duration of natural, vaccine-induced immunity – YubaNet

September 22, 2020 New research suggests that the impact of natural and vaccine-induced immunity will be key factors in shaping the future trajectory of the global coronavirus pandemic, known as COVID-19. In particular, a vaccine capable of eliciting a strong immune response could substantially reduce the future burden of infection,according to a study by Princeton researcherspublished in the journal Science Sept. 21.

Much of the discussion so far related to the future trajectory of COVID-19 has rightly been focused on the effects of seasonality and non-pharmaceutical interventions [NPIs], such as mask-wearing and physical distancing,said co-first authorChadi Saad-Roy, a Ph.D. candidate in PrincetonsLewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics. In the short term, and during the pandemic phase, NPIs are the key determinant of case burdens. However, the role of immunity will become increasingly important as we look into the future.

Ultimately, we dont know what the strength or duration of natural immunity to SARS-CoV-2 or a potential vaccine will look like, explained co-first author Caroline Wagner, an assistant professor of bioengineering at McGill University who worked on the study as a postdoctoral research associate in thePrinceton Environmental Institute(PEI).

For instance, if reinfection is possible, what does a persons immune response to their previous infection do? Wagner asked. Is that immune response capable of stopping you from transmitting the infection to others? These will all impact the dynamics of future outbreaks.

The current study builds onPrinceton research published in Science May 18that reported that local variations in climate are not likely to dominate the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and included many of the same authors, who are all affiliated with theClimate Change and Infectious Diseaseinitiative funded by PEI and thePrinceton Institute for International and Regional Studies(PIIRS).

In the most recent paper, the researchers used a simple model to project the future incidence of COVID-19 cases and the degree of immunity in the human population under a range of assumptions related to how likely individuals are to transmit the virus in different contexts. For example, the model allows for different durations of immunity after infection, as well as different extents of protection from reinfection.The researchersposted online an interactive version of models predictionsunder these different sets of assumptions.

As expected, the model found that theinitial pandemic peak is largely independent of immunity because most people are susceptible. However, a substantial range of epidemic patterns are possible as SARS-CoV-2 infection and thus immunity increases in the population.

If immune responses are only weak, or transiently protective against reinfection, for example, then larger and more frequent outbreaks can be expected in the medium term, said co-authorAndrea Graham, professor ofecology and evolutionary biologyat Princeton and anassociated faculty member in PEI.

The nature of the immune responses also can affect clinical outcomes and the burden of severe cases requiring hospitalization, the researchers found. The key question is the severity of subsequent infections in comparison to primary ones.

Importantly, the study found that in all scenarios a vaccine capable of eliciting a strong immune response could substantially reduce future caseloads. Even a vaccine that only offers partial protection against secondary transmission could generate major benefits if widely deployed, the researchers reported.

Factors such as age and superspreading events are known to influence the spread of SARS-CoV-2 by causing individuals within a population to experience different immune responses or transmit the virus at different rates.Our models show that these factors do not affect our qualitative projections about future epidemic dynamics, saidBryan Grenfell, the Kathryn Briger and Sarah Fenton Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology andPublic Affairsand an associated faculty member in PEI. Grenfell is a co-senior author on the paper withC. Jessica Metcalf, associate professor of ecology and evolutionary biology and public affairs and also a PEI associated faculty member.

As vaccine candidates emerge, and more detailed predictions of future caseloads with vaccination are needed, these additional details will need to be incorporated into more complex models,Grenfell said.

The study authors also explored the effect of vaccine hesitancy on future infection dynamics. Their model found that people who decline to partake in pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical measures to contain the coronavirus could nonetheless slow containment of the virus even if a vaccine is available.

Our model indicates that if vaccine refusal is high and correlated with increased transmission and riskier behavior such as refusing to wear a mask, then the necessary vaccination rate needed to reach herd immunity could be much higher, said co-authorSimon Levin, the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and an associated faculty member in PEI. In this case, the nature of the immune response after infection or vaccination would be very important factors in determining how effective a vaccine would be.

When so much uncertainty in the underlying processes exists, it can be challenging to make accurate projections about the future, Grenfell said. We argue in this study that ultimately, a family of both simple and more complex models is the best way to proceed under these circumstances. Comparing the predictions of these models carefully and then coming up with a carefully averaged picture of the future as with weather prediction can be very helpful.

One of the main takeaways of the study is that monitoring population-level immunity to SARS-CoV-2, in addition to active infections, will be critical for accurately predicting future incidence.

This is not an easy thing to do accurately, particularly when the nature of this immune response is not well understood, said co-author Michael Mina, an assistant professor at the Harvard School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School. Even if we can measure a clinical quantity like an antibody titer against this virus, we dont necessarily know what that means in terms of protection.

Studying the effects of T-cell immunity and cross-protection from other coronaviruses are important avenues for future work, Metcalf said.

Additional authors on the paper includeRachel Baker, a PEI postdoctoral research associate; Sinead Morris, a postdoctoral research scientist at Columbia University who received her Ph.D. in ecology and evolutionary biology from Princeton; and Jeremy Farrar, director of the Wellcome Trust.

Consolidations have played a key role in forming Chinese super apps, and they tend to be driven by competitive pressures. As this range of services continues to expand, users will increasingly find themselves attached to the app, as it will be intertwined with every facet of their lives.

What does the future hold for APAC super apps?

The APAC region consists of nations with vastly distinct cultures, economies, and commercial practices. Even leading players such as Gojek have found it challenging to gain traction outside of their home market, as it turned out that unique product adaptations and strategies were required to succeed in each neighbouring country. For this reason alone, it is unlikely that super apps will make bold product launches across the ocean. While the core services of super apps will likely remain in the region, the boldest ones will extend their reach behind the scenes by taking equity stakes and forming partnerships with foreign up-and-coming tech startups. The goal here would be to incorporate the startups technology and data into the super apps native ecosystem.

This is especially applicable to players such as Tencent and Grab who have increased their focus on fintech with ambitions of developing a global digital banking ecosystem. Instead of expansion, the new buzzword for fintech-focused super apps could very well be integration.

Does Computerized CT-based 3D Planning Of The Humeral Head Cut Help To Restore The Anatomy Of The Proximal Humerus After Stemless Total Shoulder…

Background:Restoration of proximal humeral anatomy (RPHA) after total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) has been shown to result in better clinical outcomes than is the case in non-anatomical humeral reconstruction. Preoperative virtual planning has mainly focused on glenoid component placement. Such planning also has the potential to improve anatomical positioning of the humeral head by more accurately guiding of the humeral head cut, and selection of anatomical humeral component sizing. Hypothesis of the study: The use of preoperative 3D planning helps to reliably achieve RPHA after stemless TSA.

Methods:One hundred consecutive stemless TSA (67 males, 51 right shoulder, mean age of 62 9.4 years) were radiographically assessed using pre- and postoperative standardized AP radiographs. The RPHA was measured with the so-called circle method described by Youderian et al. We measured deviation from the premorbid center of rotation (COR), and more than 3mm was considered as minimal clinical important difference. Additionally, pre- and postoperative humeral head diameter (HHD), head neck angle (HNA) and humeral head height (HHH) were measured to assess additional geometrical risk factors for poor RPHA.

Results:The mean distance from of the premorbid to the implanted head COR was 4.3mm 3.1mm. Thirty five shoulders (35%) showed a deviation of less than 3mm (mean 1.9, 1.1) and 65 shoulders (65%) a deviation of 3mm (mean 8.0 3.7). Overstuffing was the main reason for poor RPHA (88%). The level of the humeral head cut was responsible for overstuffing in the 46 of the 57 overstuffed cases. The preoperative HHD, HHH and the HNA were significantly larger, higher and more in valgus angulation in the group with accurate compared to the group with poor RPHA (HHD of 61.1mm 4.4 vs 55.9 6.6, p<0.001; HHH 8.62.2 vs 7.62.6 p=0.026, varus angulation of 134.7 6.4 vs. 131.0 7.91, p=0.010).

Conclusion:Restoration of proximal humeral anatomy after stemless TSA using CT-based 3D planning was not precise. A poorly performed humeral head cut was the main reason for overstuffing which was seen in 88% of the cases with inaccurate RPHA. Preoperative small HHD, low HHH and varus angulated HNA are risk factors for poor RPHA after stemless TSA.

Clinical significance:While Preoperative CT-based 3-D planning gives insight into the proximal humeral anatomy, execution of this insight through visual based surgery without guides or navigation, does not appear to increase accuracy of RPHA.

Most kinesiology graduates go on to have careers in exercise, health or education.Patrick McMurraywenton to open acclaimed sea food restaurants and break Guinness World Records for oyster shucking and credits his University of Toronto education, no less.

Born into a family of teachers, McMurray planned to become a teacher after completing his bachelors degree in physical health and education at U of T in 1993.

Yet, McMurray says his undergraduate education was quietly preparing him for a career in the food industry all along.

During my time at the university, I was the social director, organizing monthly pubs and social gatherings, and helping out with frosh weeks, he says. I was also working in restaurants as a server during that time to help pay for school.

McMurray started his own restaurant called Starfish in 2001 and six months later won the Canadian shucking championship a third time. Next, he was off to Ireland to compete in the world championship, taking his new blade and training regimen with him.

Going from a Canadian championship to a world championship is like switching from a sprint to a long distance race. says McMurray. You have to use a different approach.

The Canadian championship requires contestants to shuck 18 oysters. At the world championships, contestants have to shuck 30 Irish native oysters, which are a different species and are technically more difficult to open. McMurray used his university education to help him train. Leaning on the lessons he learned in his biomechanics and ergonomics classes, he designed an ergo-dynamic knife, which gave him a better grip and more leverage. He also developed a technique that would help him open the oysters more efficiently.

The difficulty of shucking an oyster comes from it being hard on the outside and soft on the inside, he explains. You have to sever the muscle that holds the two shells together and serve the oyster without cutting the meat, so the competitions are a combination of speed and dexterity.

You can save a lot of time by training your hands to do different things.

Murray came up with the idea ofserving his customers plates of 30 oysters for $35 while they timed him shucking oysters on a table the same height as the competition table. He went on to win the Galway World Championships that year, the first Canadian to accomplish the feat. When he returned home to Canada, he was invited on Christine Cushings show on Food TV.

I thought Id make an attempt at the Guinness world record, set at 27 oysters in one minute, a perfect time frame for TV, McMurray says. I brought 40 Oysters, opened 33 in 60 seconds, and after sending in the video and letters, was awarded my first Guinness world record.

Ever since, McMurray has received calls from around the world asking him to attempt tobreak his own record which he did in 2007 inBeijing, where he shucked 38 oysters per minute.Then, in2017, he went head to head with Gordon Ramsay on The F-Word Live show, setting the new record of 39 oysters per minute. His Guinness world record now stands at 1,114 oysters in one hour.

Oysters have taken McMurray around the world, across Canada and throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia.

Travelling around the globe has shown me that oyster culture is found wherever ocean touches land, McMurray says.

In 2007, he published his first book on oysters, calledConsider the Oyster:a Shuckers Field Guide, in which he wrote about the global nature of oysters and created the oyster tasting wheel. In 2018, he published a second edition calledThe Oyster Companion, which includes recipes and more stories.

Oysters are a rare food that can take you back to an exact location and memory, he says. Thats because when the muscle closes, it captures sea water that it uses as its lifeblood. That little drop of ocean water has the flavour of the region its been plucked from, so I can open up an oyster from Ireland here in Toronto and smell the sea breeze in western Ireland.

Thats why I always tell people to first smell the oyster, then chew it.

McMurray is often invited to speak at special events, judge shucking contests and make TV appearances, most memorably on Martha Stewarts TV show, where he showed her, Snoop Dogg and Wanda Sykes how to shuck oysters and spoke about oyster etiquette, such as choosing the right sauce.

If you look at Tabasco sauce, thats great for someone from Louisiana, but if youre in Paris, why are you using a Louisiana sauce on a Parisian order of French oysters? Regional sauces would be more appropriate, he says. On the other hand, the Olympia oyster should be eaten without sauce. Its the size of a loonie and it takes five years to grow it and it virtually melts on the palette. Its so small, but its the most complex of all oysters.

When hes not teaching celebrities about oysters, McMurray teaches a culinary and hospitality class at Centennial College, having finally come full circle from his days at U of T when he planned to become a teacher.

When I teach my class about oysters, I talk about the different species, the anatomy of the oyster and how to open it. I learned all about muscles in my anatomy class at U of T, he says.

He saysthere is no better food source for protein than oysters. Theyre low on fat, contain Omega 3 and Omega 6, zinc, selenium and vitamin D. And, he says, they are among the most sustainable foods to grow, with the ocean doing most of the work.

Eat an oyster, save an ocean, says McMurray. Theyre good for you and the environment.

His words of advice for new students starting their education in the most unusual of times? Enjoy it.

You never know where you will end up, but know that youll always be able to use what youre learning and apply it perhaps in different ways than originally intended, says McMurray.And, follow your passion. My passion turned out to be food, but I used so much of what I learned in school about nutrition, anatomy and biomechanics in my career.

Surprises abound in the new IDTechEx Research report, "Supercapacitor Markets, Technology Roadmap, Opportunities 2021-2041". In 2010, there were no Chinese manufacturers in the top ten supercapacitor manufacturers. In 2020, 40% of them are Chinese. This has been achieved by world-class R&D, being in one of the largest markets globally, strong investment and government support including protective trading. However, China is not leading in capacitor-supercapacitor hybrids where the USA saw a $7 million follow on order recently.

An exception to the commoditisation is small supercapacitors in the form of battery-supercapacitor hybrids BSH, aerospace and military ones working at 150C, capacitor-supercapacitor hybrids beating tantalum electrolytics on ripple and one fifth to one tenth of the size and weight and ones in odd formats such as to go in a watch or smart card. Those working at 85C, -40C and 3V as single cells are less common and in demand.

Several companies declare their supercapacitors to be "graphene" as a badge of honour. It can mean non-flammable, relatively non-toxic, no use of the volatile, toxic carcinogen acetonitrile, valuably improved series resistance, better voltage and energy density in a pure EDLC - all good things justifying higher price.

Raghu Das predicts, "Acquisitions and mergers will continue. One billion dollar supercapacitor businesses may be created by 2045. If the addressable markets we have analysed are strongly penetrated, then it will be much earlier. Given past disappointments, our upside forecast currently stands at $7 billion in 2041."

Not even two Heisman Trophies can bookend the regret that slides off the shelf of Archie Griffins most painful Pasadena memory, when undefeated Ohio State lost to underdog UCLA in the 1976 Rose Bowl, costing the Buckeyes a national championship.

Thats the one that haunts me, Griffin said, grimacing more from the recollection of that 23-10 loss than from the sore back that now hampers his golf game.

The Buckeyes were ranked No. 1 in both the Associated Press and United Press International polls, had defeated the Bruins 41-20 in the Los Angeles Coliseum earlier in the season and entered the New Years Day game as two-touchdown favorites.

Yet despite coming up short again Griffin finished 1-3 in Rose Bowls, with two lost chances at national titles the former tailback would not describe 1975 as a failed season just because the Buckeyes were not voted No. 1.

It cant be national championship or bust, he said.

It cant? Try telling that to Ohio State fans too young to recall when a successful season could be defined by a win over Michigan and playing in the Rose Bowl. These days, anything short of a College Football Playoff appearance, culminating in a national championship, leaves many fans, players and coaches feeling frustrated.

Before the Big Ten reinstituted football on Wednesday, Ohio State coach Ryan Day tweeted we still have an opportunity to give our young men what they have worked so hard for: a chance to safely compete for a national championship this fall.

Woody Hayes did not think that way. The former OSU coach considered a national championship the outcome of a special season not the goal. Win the Big Ten and Rose Bowl and the chances of being voted poll champions were pretty good.

But there were no guarantees, which explains why Hayes and the next two Buckeyes coaches, Earle Bruce and John Cooper, focused their attention more on winning the conference than winning a national championship that was decided by media and coaches poll voters. During Hayes time, and before, voting to determine the national champion took place before the bowl games were played.

As Griffin explained it, You could win your bowl game and might win the national championship, but it in the end it was still up to the voters.

Cooper learned that the hard way in 1996 the penultimate season before the Bowl Championship Series began when the Buckeyes lone blemish was a 13-9 loss to Michigan in The Slip game. Ohio State dropped from No. 2 to No. 4 in the polls, then defeated No. 2-ranked Arizona State 20-17 in the Rose Bowl.

Cooper hoped voters would bump the Buckeyes to No. 1, but OSU finished No. 2 to Florida after the Gators defeated No. 1 Florida State 52-20 in the Sugar Bowl.

Im envious of the (playoff) system, the 83-year-old Cooper said. I had a couple teams that, Im not saying they would have won it but they would have played for the national championship.

Cooper admitted, however, that such wishful thinking fails to consider context and a changing win-at-all-cost culture.

Times have changed, he said. The goal back then seemed like it was win your games, beat Michigan and go to the Rose Bowl. It used to be you win the Big Ten, youre going to play in the Rose Bowl.

I coached at Oregon State and UCLA, and even out there the goal was to go to the Rose Bowl. Bowls were a reward for a good season. Later on, it became you had to win the Rose Bowl.

The BCS changed everything when it arrived in 1998, pitting No. 1 vs. No. 2 in a championship game that removed some subjectivity from the equation. Schools still had to be voted into the top two spots, but the title was decided on the field.

By the time Ben Hartsock arrived at Ohio State, in 1999, the tight end already had put most of the Rose Bowl mystique in his rearview mirror. He grew up listening to his father rave about The Granddaddy of them All, but as a player, Hartsock knew there were bigger fish to fry.

The importance of the Rose Bowl felt to me like something my dad focused on, Hartsock said. I knew how big it was because I was raised in a house that taught that curriculum, but I transitioned away from it.

When Jim Tressel arrived at Ohio State in 2001, he immediately replaced Rose Bowl with national title.

When Tressel came in, the main focus was Michigan. It starts with beating Michigan, then winning the Big Ten and the national title, Hartsock said. And winning the Big Ten was the only way to get to the national title. You could argue thats not the case today.

A team now can fail to win its regular-season conference championship and still win a national title, as Alabama did in 2011 (BCS) and 2017 (College Football Playoff). The playoff selection committee emphasizes that its only mission is to choose the four best teams.

Left unsaid is the reality that any team outside the top four and any bowl outside the two semifinals and championship game becomes an afterthought.

Its now all about making the playoff. Ohio State coach Urban Meyer in 2014 even gave a name to the quest: The Chase.

That doesnt mean coaches minimize conference championships. Meyer stressed in 2014 that we wake up every day to compete for championships in November. But those conference titles are more a means to an end than the ultimate goal. In Ohio States case, the first job is to win the Big Ten East Division, which gets you into the conference championship game, then win in Indianapolis to hopefully earn a playoff berth.

As for the players, todays Buckeyes are more aware of the drive for a national championship than their predecessors. With 24/7 sports media, tuning out the playoff noise is impossible.

Of course, some things never change, no matter the ultimate goal.

In early August, when the Big Ten was adjusting its schedules to eliminate nonconference games during the coronavirus pandemic, OSU quarterback Justin Fields tweeted, I dont care when we play Michigan, I just want to play them and beat the brakes off them.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Behind-the-Scenes Photo Has Fans Angry at Nico All Over Again – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Even though the coronavirus pandemic is very much still in full swing, some things are coming back. For example, some shows have resumed filming.

One of these shows is Greys Anatomy, and thats a good thing. Fans need new episodes of Greysto get them through these trying times. Plus, the global pandemic has provided a lot of inspiration for the writers behind the show. The cast is back at work, and posting pictures wearing masks, and socially distancing from their fellow stars.

A recent behind the scenes photo of Alex Landi and Jake Borelli on set has fans fuming. Its not over their safety precautions, however.

Landi and Borelli are appropriately spaced out and wearing masks for the photo. But that doesnt mean that Nico and Levi will be keeping their distance in the upcomingGreys Anatomyseason.

Fans on Reddit though that Landis presence on set was a sure sign that Levi and Nico would be getting back together. A lot of fans were upset at the prospect.

Nico left Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in season 16. He took a job with the Seattle Mariners. Many viewers hoped that Nicos departure would be permanent. Others speculate that the new COVID-related episodes have given the writers a reason to bring the character back.

As one fan wrote: Since they are working the COVID storyline in that will likely affect it since he was leaving to go to a sports team.

Fans were really riled up over the picture of Landi and Borelli. Most of them were worried that Nico would return and mistreat Levi, the budding doctor and fan favorite. Fans hate Nico and Levi together, and were happy to see Nico go.

According to one fan: this picture actually made me mad; i was so hopeful he would go away.

Other fans dont hate Nico specifically, but dont think hes a good fit for Levi. Fans commented things like Levi deserves so much better than Nico, and i just hope levi realizes that he deserves someone better.

Still others just downright hate Nico for his boring personality. Another redditor wrote Ugh Nico no personality or character. The hate for Nico on reddit is real. One fan went so far as to write they should give nico covid just saying.

There is one good thing about Nico coming back. The actor who plays him, Landi, is quite good looking. Fans were able to see the silver lining in Nicos return. Although none of them were happy to see Nico and Levi back together, they take solace in the fact that theyll have someone pretty to look at, even if they wont be enjoying the content.

One fan commented: Nico was super hot when he was first introduced.. but I got over that real quick. Im not the biggest fan of Nico. Another wrote: The only thing I actually like about Nico is his looks, and lets be honest, hes pretty hot.

Fans who love Landis looks but hate Nico can catch the actor on one of his other shows listed on IMDb. Hes also on NetflixsInsatiable.

His career is just taking off, and the role of Nico is his first long-term run on television. When the second season ofInsatiabledrops, Landi will be in that too. His character plays a stripper, which is good news for fans who love Landis looks. They also may find his character more palatable.

Greys Anatomyseason 17 will air this November with new episodes of the medical drama dropping weekly on ABC. Ahead of its return, a first-look trailer hinting at what is to come in the new season has been released - and it spells danger for Teddy Altman (played by Kim Raver) and Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd).

Fans of the long-running medical drama have been anxiously awaiting the shows return since its last season was cut short.

Now ABC has revealed how the new series of Greys Anatomy will begin on November 12 on the channel.

As the show gears up to its premiere, a first-look trailer has been released which teases what is to come next.

The biggest reveal from the brief clip is what the future holds for Teddy and Owen as a couple.

Fans will remember how season 16 ended with Owen finding out the truth about Teddys cheating.

She had been having an affair with Tom Koracick (Gregory Germann) and accidentally revealed this to her fianc on their wedding day.

During the short clip, Teddy says to Owen in tears: I love you.

Owen is seen looking back at her, also in tears, teasing more heartbreak is on its way.

The future of their storyline on the show was also previewed by actor Kim Raver in an interview with TV Line.

She explained how the drama was going to get messier as more of Teddys past with a woman named Allison is explored.

Speaking about how she will deal with this, as well as her romance issues, she said: Its amazing to watch her - and frustrating.
