The Chicago White Sox get an opportunity to continue the Oakland Athletics postseason woes and send the American League West champs into another early offseason Wednesday afternoon when the clubs continue their first-round playoff series with Game 2.

Two low-ERA starters Chicago left-hander Dallas Keuchel (6-2, 1.99) and Oakland righty Chris Bassitt (5-2, 2.29) are scheduled to get the ball in a series that got off to a low-scoring start Tuesday, thanks mostly to White Sox ace Lucas Giolito.

Supported by three home runs, Giolito flirted with baseball immortality hurling six perfect innings before eventually combining with three relievers on a three-hitter and a 4-1 victory that gave the seventh-seeded White Sox a 1-0 lead over the second-seeded As in the best-of-three set.

Adam Engel, Jose Abreu and Yasmani Grandal homered for the White Sox, who are seeking their first postseason-series victory since winning the 2005 World Series.

The As have not won a postseason series since 2006, but unlike the White Sox, who are making their first appearance since 2008, Oakland is a fairly regular participant in October. Since sweeping the Minnesota Twins in the 2006 AL Division Series, the As have come up short in their six opportunities since (three series and three AL wild-card games).

To even force a Game 3 in this series, theyll need to solve the veteran Keuchel, who is 4-2 in his postseason career with a 3.47 ERA. Coming off a season in which he recorded a career-best ERA, he will be making his 12th postseason start. Keuchel, 32, hasnt received a decision in his past four, including two for the Atlanta Braves last October, since he took a loss in the Houston Astros run to the World Series crown in 2017.

In his career against the As, Keuchel is 6-6 despite a fine 3.06 ERA in 22 career games, 20 starts. He is just 2-4 at Oakland, including a 7-1 loss for the Astros in his most recent visit in August 2018.

One regular member of the Oakland lineup hell be happy not to see is third baseman Matt Chapman, who has bombed Keuchel for a .400 average with two doubles and two home runs in 16 career plate appearances. Chapmans season ended on Sept. 6 when he sustained a torn labrum in his hip. The As have been held to three or fewer runs in 13 of 24 games since then.

Keuchel has not lasted longer than six innings since experiencing back spasms earlier this month. He is confident those issues are behind him.

Bassitt hasnt needed much support in a personal three-game winning streak, having allowed just one run and 23 hits in 26 2/3 innings over his past four starts.

Originally drafted by the White Sox in 2011, Bassitt moved to the As along with Marcus Semien in a six-player deal in December 2014 that saw Jeff Samardzija go to Chicago.

The Toledo, Ohio, native still has family and friends in the Midwest, including some of the latter in the White Sox organization.

Its special for me, just because its like a playing-with-your-friends kind of thing, Bassitt said of facing the White Sox. So its fun; its a different dynamic.

Against the White Sox, the 31-year-old is 2-1 with a 3.04 ERA in four career starts.

Engel (0-for-4), Abreu (3-for-12) and Grandal (0-for-3), Chicagos three home run hitters in the series opener, have batted a combined .158 against Bassitt in their careers.

The pitching matchup is strength vs. strength, with Bassitt 2-1 with a 0.72 ERA in six home starts this season while Keuchel has pitched his best on the road, going 3-1 with a 1.60 ERA in seven starts.

Avid viewers have noticed the plot hole in the fantasy drama following a shoot-out between Dan Espinoza and Lucifer.

Fans are still confused why some attacks seem to affect Lucifer (Tom Ellis) more than others - while other times he remains untouchable.

The scene in question was when Dan pulled a gun out and shot Lucifer when he admitted to being the Prince of Darkness.

The inconsistency came to light after the bullet bounced straight off him with Lucifer fans questioning the shooting and the effect it had/didn't have on him.

They took to Reddit to debate whether Lucifer should have been knocked to the ground when Dan shot him in the chest.

A fan posted: How is it that when Dan shot Lucifer he fell backwards, but other times he got shot with a full clip but didn't even blink?

Another replied: This is one of the most inconsistent things about the show, I think their explanation might be that when it's unexpected it hits differently, kinda like tensing up before getting punched.

A fan added: "Only hours later, Dan attempts to shoot him and he's invulnerable again. I imagine it has a lot to do with the conversation he and Chloe had just had, but part of me's hoping that being unable to help his partner has something to do with him suddenly becoming bulletproof."

Kris Bryant’s Future Is as Enigmatic as He Is – Bleacher Report

Arizona, the afternoon before COVID-19 suspended spring training, knocked the wind out of baseball and blasted the world off its axis.

It was a time when trade rumors about a young superstar with MVP and Rookie of the Year awards on his resume could be a thing.

"You know what?" Kris Bryant's father, Mike, said on that March day during a long conversation with B/R about his son's future with the Chicago Cubs. "At first there was a level of concern. But really quickly you learn to realize, it's part of the game.

"I want him to be a Chicago Cub forever. But how many people get to spend their career with just one team? There's a point of acceptance."

Six-and-a-half months later, another October looms in a vastly different time. Dodging the virus throughout this 60-game race during an abbreviated season, the Cubs are aiming for one more World Series title before economic and baseball forces conspire to break up the nucleus of one of the most iconic Wrigleyville groups ever. And as they do, there comes another point of acceptance.

Bryant's summer was reduced to rubble by a steady, maddening trickle of injuries. Once on the fast track to bronze statues and immortality, Bryant posted a .206/.293/.351 slash line this year that's the statistical equivalent of a human face flushed with embarrassment. His lack of pop is more befitting of former Cubs utility man Paul Popovich than that of a three-time All-Star. And that the Cubs as a group, while somehow continuing to win, suffered through their worst offensive season in Wrigley Field in franchise history is lost on nobody.

Bryant started the season 2-for-22 and has been playing catch-up ever since. He's had a sore back, sore elbow, and a wrist and finger injury that knocked him onto the injured list in August. He missed two games while awaiting clearance under the COVID-19 protocols after doing the responsible thing and self-reporting symptoms.

He was a late scratch from another game with what was described as "gastrointestinal issues."

And then in Pittsburgh on the final Monday night of the regular season, as if he hadn't ripped through enough ice and Ace bandages this year, he felt his right oblique grab during a swing. He spent the next few days back in the trainer's room instead of on the field.Finally, during the season's last weekend, he returned to the lineup and walloped a grand slam Saturday and another homer on Sunday, driving in six runs in the biggest hint yet that, just maybe, he's beginning to shed his season-long slump.

The North Star through all of this has been the flip of a single calendar page. October remains a clean slate, a blank canvas, his best hope for reprieve. Memories of the autumn of 2016 still bring enough smiles for Bryant to push through the grimaces and pain of today.

"It would be very easy to get down in the dumps," he conceded after a game in mid-September. "A lot of us aren't where we want to be, but there are a lot of good people around us, a lot of good people supporting us.

"Anytime you're winning, it makes it sting a little less."

The chase for another World Series title overrides the uncertainty and anxiety that remain constant companions in a year unlike any other. The daily battle is to keep the bad stuff at arm's length while still finding joyor, moments that "sting a little less."

Like everyone else, Bryant has had much more than just his job burdening his thoughts.

On the day baseball suspended operations in March, Bryant said: "The most important thing is to keep us safe. I have a lot of family members who are older too. I'd love to keep them safe. And a lot of fans around the game this shows there are things bigger than the game."

At the time, his wife, Jessica, was pregnant with the couple's first child. She gave birth to a baby boy, Kyler Lee, on April 7. Originally, the Cubs should have been in Pittsburgh on that day. Instead, Bryant was home in Las Vegas with family in the midst of the shutdown.

When baseball resumed in July, like so many others, Bryant had mixed feelings. But while the Dodgers' David Price, the Brewers' Lorenzo Cain and the Giants' Buster Posey, among others, opted out of the season, Bryant couldn't imagine watching his good buddy Anthony Rizzo and Jon Lester, Kyle Schwarber, Javier Baez and others work to author another chapter of their story without him.

"Can you imagine me opting out?" he asked on a videoconference call as the Cubs reconvened in July. "I just couldn't do that. I'm going to do everything I can to be safe, healthy, lead by example, encourage people to do the right thing.

"But there's a baseball season, and I want to be out there. I know I have a lot to worry about, and I still worry about going home and bringing it to my wife and my newborn. That's scary to me."

Or, as first-year manager David Ross said this month while addressing the Cubs' uneven play in general: "The mental aspect of this season is something that I don't think we talk about enough with what these guys are having to go through. Everybody."

Kris Bryant cares. He always has. About his game, about his teammates and about the people around him.

True story: In high school, Bryant and a classmate tied for the honor of class valedictorian. The Bonanza High principal, according to Mike Bryant, planned to break the tie by having them write an essay. And in that instance, with a scholarship to the University of San Diego and a bright future ahead of him, Kris, unlike this season, did opt out.

"He told me: 'You know what, Dad? I'm not going to write the essay. I've been blessed. I've got everything I need. Dad, let her have it.'

"Selfless. That's Kris."

As a rookie, Bryant willingly bounced from third base to left field to right field to center field to first base for the good of the team. He did it again in '16 during the Cubs' World Series run. Not every player would do that, especially not a bonus baby with Bryant's pedigree.

But fans have short memories, and what a player does, or doesn't do, today often overshadows what he did, no matter how glorious. As each day's Cubs news seemed to drag with it a new nagging injury for Bryant over the summer, the vitriol in Chicago reached toxic levels, mostly repeating the varying lines of "Bryant is soft."

Never mind that, despite two trips to the injured list, he played through a shoulder injury in 2018 that did what most opposing pitchers couldn't: hold him to just 13 homers, 52 RBI and a slash line of .272/.374/.460.

Then he returned to All-Star status in 2019, and even with a knee injury that hampered him in the season's second half, he still clubbed 31 homers with 77 RBI and batted .282/.382/.521.

He played in 147 or more games in four of his first five seasons before 2020.

Yet with free agency looming after the '21 season and with the disappointing Cubs failing to make the playoffs last year, trade rumors swirled like sugar into cotton candy this past winter. They came in all shapes, sizes and colors.

"I definitely saw the trade rumors because we were one of the teams he was rumored to be getting traded to," said Texas' Joey Gallo, who, at 26, is two years younger than Bryant and has been friends with him going back to their days growing up in Las Vegas. "So that was definitely exciting.

"I was hoping I'd wake up one day and Kris Bryant got traded to the Texas Rangers."

Instead, he remained a Cub. Then, as he flew from his Las Vegas home to Chicago for the Cubs Convention in January, he was felled by the flu. It was so severe that he U-turned and returned homewhich caused a backlash on social media ugly enough that his wife leapt to his defense, asking the utterly logical question: If Kris was faking, why would he have flown all the way to Chicago in the first place?

It is not a news flash that the world often doesn't make sense. We live in a society in which kindness too often is mistaken for weakness and too many Monday morning quarterbacks can be too quick to render judgment without first obtaining all of the facts.

"You're talking about a guy who's 6'5"," Lester told B/R this spring. "He needs his levers. When you're talking about shoulders and knees, those are big things. You're not talking about little small aches and pains. And a guy who uses his legs.

"What people don't understand is you don't get guys who can drive in 100 and score 100 and walk 100 times. That's a special player."

And, an above-average defender who is one of the smartest, headiest baserunners in the game. "Running the bases, he's good at it," Cubs reliever Pedro Strop marveled.

"Somebody once told me that 90 percent of Kris Bryant is better than 100 percent of some players," Lester said. "As a pitcher when I show up to pitch every five days and look at the lineup and I don't see Kris Bryant, that's a letdown for me."

Last week, following Bryant's oblique injury, Schwarber echoed that sentiment: "Obviously, numbers are numbers. And there have been setbacks with injuries and things like that. But whenever this guy's in the lineup and whenever he's out there on the field, you think something great is going to happen."

Something great can still happen in October, both for Bryant and the Cubs.

Out of the rubble of this summer, if he can sync those levers, he remains a dangerous hitter capable of doing serious damage.

Out of the ruins of his 2020 statistical line, he remains a prime-time slugger who can carry the Cubs with one hot streak, which surely would go a long way toward erasing his roughest year yet and quieting much of the social media noise.

"As an organization, we haven't handled winning the World Series [in 2016] as well as we would have liked," Cubs president Theo Epstein said during a long conversation on an Arizona back field this spring. "There's clearly something to prove this year with everybody. It's an opportunity too.

"We're still together, and it's an opportunity to define on our terms what our post-World Series arc will be like."

Epstein noted how it's easy to take Bryant for granted because he shows up every day and handles everything in stride. "First of all, you show up and win an MVP and a World Series and a Rookie of the Year, and the Golden Spikes Award before that [2013 as the best amateur player in the country], it sets up an impossible standard," Epstein said. "You can't replicate that every year."

The trade rumors, the setbacks, the injuriesthey haven't dented Bryant's positive perspective on life. As he told his father when opting out of that high school essay, I've been blessed. And with a new son this summer, as difficult as the baseball part of his life has been, as Bryant sweetly said in February on the Cubs' new Marquee Sports Network, "Honestly, I think this is really what I've been put on this earth to do, is be a dad."

Cincinnati outfielder Nick Castellanos discovered that side of Bryant during the second half of last summer, when he briefly became Bryant's teammate after the Cubs acquired Castellanos from Detroit at the July trade deadline.

"First of all, he's an incredibly kind human being," Castellanos told B/R this spring. "He's family-oriented. The simple joys something that would make my son happy is the same thing that would make Kris happy."

Castellanos' son, Liam, is six.

It's the baseball side of his life that has Bryant looking inward.

"He's been the best in show since he was in high school, all the way through," Los Angeles Angels manager Joe Maddon, the former Cubs skipper who was the only manager Bryant had known in the majors before Ross, said. "So when he's not able to play up to his personal, expected levels, he disappoints himself.

"He never wants to let his teammates down. Never. Never. All that stuff is who K.B. is."

One of the indicators of that in this truncated season was his diminished walk rate. Throughout his career, it's been up near 12 percent of his plate appearances, a signal that he is selectively swinging at strikes and, theoretically, pitches he can drive. This season, playing catch-up from the beginning, he only walked8.2 percent of the timea sign that he was overeager and impatiently trying to force things to happen when they weren't there.

A typical season usually contains more than 600 plate appearances. This year, Bryant registered 147.

So he's spent some time going back over 100-at-bat stretches in which he's struggled during his career and envisioning how he lifted himself out of those skids. Problem is, "It's so different for me this year because it was all at the beginning of this shortened season and there was a lot of anxiety going out and playing every day, where in a lot of those struggles in the past, I had a good chunk of the season behind me and it wasn't as noticeable."

He acknowledges that, "It is very frustrating, just continuing to look at the schedule and realize that, hey, man, we're running out of time here."

Yet despite being nowhere close to his normal self, Bryant's OPS was still over .640.

"He's probably the guy who puts the most pressure on himself, in general, on the team," Ross said.

The key for him and his teammates, Bryant said, is "surrendering to what this season is" and acknowledging that over just 60 games, there isn't much more anybody can do than accept it and try to "have fun with it."

But even the fun is more work when a guy is swinging as poorly as Bryant did for most of this season. And the normally upbeat and polite Bryant offered a window into his frustration when, after homering for the first time in more than a month Saturdayhe responded to a question about the season-long criticism from some quarters with a profanity.

"I don't give a s--t," Bryant told reporters after the game. "I really don't. That's a good answer. I'm over it. Sometimes I go out there and go 4-for-4 and it's not good enough for some people, so I don't give a s--t."

Never are there any guarantees in front of us, and in 2020, never has that been more true. Winning this month, which begins with the expanded Wild Card Round against the Marlins on Wednesday, won't suddenly bring normalcy back to their worldor oursbut the slice of joy and slivers of sunshine that winning brings will be a reward in itself. Winning will add to the legacy of these particular Cubs, who probably are in their final chapters together.

That they sense this was never more evident than when Rizzo said in August: "I'm not going to shy away from this. This could be [our] last year together. We all know that, especially with the state of the game and who knows what's going to happen. This could be our last run with all our guys."

In addition to Bryant, Baez and Schwarber are eligible for free agency after the 2021 season. As for Rizzo, the Cubs hold a club option for next season, after which he would be a free agent as well.

Even before the stream of injuries took aim at his summer, Bryant and Epstein came together for what both described as a good conversation in February, swapping perspectives on the trade rumors and the future.

"He's really invested in this team," Epstein said. "Engaging with his teammates and appreciating what he has and what we have out here."

Through the shutdown, the quarantining and the relaunch, that hasn't changed. These particular Cubs have one more good shot before the winter snows begin. And Bryant has a few more swings to reverse the course of his lost summer before the future whisks him away with the October leaves toward points that cannot yet be known.

Five reasons why Enable will win a historic third Arc and five why she won’t – Racing TV

It is a plan which has been a year in the making and the curtain looks certain to finally come down on Enables glittering career following Sundays Prix de lArc de Triomphe on Sunday.

John Gosdens superstar is attempting to make history by landing three runnings of the iconic autumn final at ParisLongchamp, a year after she finished second to Waldgeist.

Will she recapture the past glories of 2017 and 2018 by etching her name into sporting folklore, or will she come up short in her quest for immortality?

Below are five reasons why she can deliver a third Arc win under Frankie Dettori on what seems certain to be her farewell appearance and also five reasons why the final chapter of her wonderful story may not have a fairy-tale ending.

1. She is the Queen of Racing

Enable has captured the hearts and minds of racing fans for myriad reasons, but none more so than the fact she is one of the best racehorses of all time. She has won 15 of her 18 starts, has never finished outside of the first three, is a dual Classic winner, a two-time Arc heroine and an 11-time Group One scorer.

22 runners remain in contention for this years Arc and on ratings, she is also the best horse in the race. Officially rated 128, she is 3lb clear of stable companion and three-time Gold Cup hero Stradivarius, and 2020 Oaks heroine Love who has an official rating of 122.

Enable has also only been beaten once when racing beyond a mile-and-a-quarter in last years Arc to Waldgeist and whilst she was beaten on testing ground in 2019, she goes better on it than others in the race will, particularly her main market rival Love.

2. Shes already won the race twice

Its an old clich, but Enable clearly has the Arc t-shirt, having been there and won the contest twice before. Whilst she only narrowly held off Sea Of Class in 2018, what perhaps is more notable is her facile two and a half-length win in the 2017 renewal. Always prominent, she shot clear in the straight and sluiced through soft ground to score.

Despite the heartbreak etched on the face of Frankie Dettori in last years Arc, things did not go as smoothly during the race. Given the conditions, it was arguable that Dettori had to commit sooner than he would have liked on Enable and that left the duo vulnerable to a stayer.

Whilst ground conditions were blamed, it has to be remembered that she finished two lengths in front of Waldgeist earlier that season on ground described as Good to Soft, but which was clearly more testing, in the King George at Ascot.

Therefore, tactics are clearly going to be important. With plenty more rain forecast and the ground already very soft at Longchamp, Dettori may play his hand slightly later on Enable this time around. Simultaneously, the ground looks a major negative for Love, Mogul and Raabihah. Stradivarius, given he stays further, and potentially Sottsass, third in last years Arc, may enjoy the ground, but Enable handles soft ground and if she handles it better than her main rivals in the betting, she wins.

3. The best prep since 2017

Enable warmed up for this year's Arc in the September Stakes

Another pivotal factor could be her preparation for this years race, which to all intents and purposes, has gone very smoothly. We never thought Enable would still be racing as a six-year-old and the sport owes a debt of gratitude to Prince Khalid Abdullah by allowing us to witness her greatness for another season. However, unlike other years, she has essentially been kept in training for one race only, the Prix de lArc de Triomphe. Even last year, Enable won a Coral-Eclipse, King George and a Yorkshire Oaks before running in the Arc. She was originally scheduled to return in the Coronation Cup or the Prince Of Waless Stakes, but took up neither of those engagements having been slow to come to hand, something which was also evident in her 2018 campaign.

By contrast, 2020 has gone like clockwork for team Enable. John Gosden remarked that she had taken a little while to get fit given she has been going up the Newmarket gallops since she was two years of age. Most shrewd punters and experts believed that a race-fit Ghaiyyath would have her measure in the Coral-Eclipse, and so it proved. However, Enable showed the benefit of this cautious approach with easy wins in the King George and September Stakes since. Frankie Dettori was delighted with her piece of work last weekend and Enable, given the form she has shown again this summer, should be fully fit and firing for her date with destiny.

4. The Gosden and Dettori factor

There are some sporting greats who can turn it on for the big occasion. Paul Gascoigne, Tiger Woods, Roger Federer, Cristian Ronaldo, Michael Jordan, Lionel Messi, Kevin Pietersen, Mo Farah and Sir Chris Hoy among them. However, is there a sportsman who relishes the big occasion quite as much as Frankie Dettori. 24 years on this week from his Magnificent Seven at Ascot, the 49-year-old is the ultimate big-race player.

Dettori is of course human and will feel the nerves just as much as the jockey in the stall next to him. However, he is able to transfer those nerves into an unsatiable will to win, something shared by Enables trainer.

To use a boxing analogy, Enable has the right people in her corner. Dettori with six and Gosden with three wins in the Arc with Dettori aboard on all three occasions highlights their prolific record in the race and why this attempt at history has clear potential.

5. Her talent and will to win

Enable, as she has demonstrated to devastating effect in races like the Oaks, can outclass her opposition, but she also boasts the courage to match her class.

Between her second win in the Arc and runner-up effort in the 2019 renewal at Longchamp, she won five G1s by a margin of a short-neck (2018 Arc), three-quarters of a length (Breeders Cup Filly & Mare Turf), three-quarters of a length (Coral-Eclipse), neck (King George) and two and three-quarter lengths (Yorkshire Oaks)

Enable has an innate desire and will to win. Whether she would prefer quicker ground or wherever she is drawn, it is that desire to come out on top which will again be on show on Sunday.

1. The weight of history

The Arc was first run in 1920 and since then there have been eight dual winners, but there has never been a triple victor.

Treve in 2015 is the only horse to seek a third win in the race and Enable will become the first horse to run four times in an Arc, having already won two renewals.

Treve also raced three times in the build-up to that years Arc but was only third to another Gosden-Dettori superstar, Golden Horn.

Enable shares a current place in history with the likes of Alleged, Tantieme, Corrida and the aforementioned Treve as a two-time winner. However, poetic justice would be secured with a third success and maybe on this occasion, history is there to be broken.

2. It must be Love or Stradivarius or Sottsass or something else?

At one point, this years Arc looked like being the race of the season. However, with Mishriff, Ghaiyyath and Magical now heading elsewhere, the quality on show has taken a slight dip. Despite that, Love looks the most formidable threat to face Enable. She has looked every inch a superstar with three successive Group One victories this term in the 1000 Guineas, Oaks and Yorkshire Oaks. The very soft ground is clearly a concern for Love with Aidan OBrien suggesting on numerous occasions this year that it would dent her ability, but she is just one of the dangers.

Stable companion Stradivarius will be partnered by Olivier Peslier and would also prefer a quicker surface. However, he stays at least another mile and his stamina-laden qualities look sure to come into play, despite finishing second to Anthony Van Dyck in the Prix Foy over course and distance last time out.

The progressive In Swoop, a winner on soft ground, last years Arc third Sottsass and of course Moulin hero Persian King, a fascinating runner given he represents eight-time Arc winner Andre Fabre, are all dangers highlighting that this will be no easy feat for Enable.

3. No six-year-old has won the Arc

A quite phenomenal statistic and yet another piece of history which Enable will have to overcome. No horse in the history of the Prix de lArc de Triomphe has ever won the 12-furlong contest as a six-year-old. Motirco was seven in 1932 and Waldgeist was five last year. However, Walgeist was one of just four horses since 1975 to win the contest aged five.

With that in mind, history is clearly not on Enables side and it does not augur well for this years contest.

4. Could tactics play a part?

For the first time, arguably since Found won the Arc in 2016, Aidan OBrien has a horse running in the race with a favourites chance.

The master of Ballydoyle has only won the race twice, with Dylan Thomas his other winner in 2007 and he could launch a five-pronged assault on Longchamp. Japan, who has disappointed this term, recent Grand Prix de Paris hero Serpentine, 2019 Irish Derby winner Sovereign and Love all look set to run. However, team Ballydoyle could also supplement Serpentine who add a different flavour to the race. Compared to his runaway win in the Derby at Epsom, he was ridden with greater restraint off an extended break in the Grand Prix de Paris last time out when only fourth.

It looks very likely that Serpentine or Sovereign will be ridden positively to make this a stiff test of stamina, something which suited Love when stablemate Passion took the field along at a good clip in the Oaks. Thus, with Serpentine perhaps gifted an early lead up front, could be tough to peg back or will he force Dettori into committing too early. The ability for this race to get very tactical is therefore something to be mindful of.

5. Ground and possible nerves from Dettori?

As alluded to in this piece already, testing ground conditions will clearly be a concern for Enable, given it looks likely to blunt her devastating finishing speed. However, perhaps a more interesting factor is the pressure on the shoulders of Frankie Dettori.

Enable means everything to Dettori. Having resurrected his career in recent years, John Gosdens superstars such as Golden Horn, Stradivarius and Enable provided the Italian with a new lease of life and Dettori has clearly relished every minute.

However, the pressure has clearly started to tell more on Dettori of late. The exultation matched by relief on his face after the 2019 King George was twinged with the anguish after Enables defeat in last years Arc.

Dettori is a man who transcends the sport and is truly racings biggest superstar. He knows the weight of expectation on his shoulders on Sunday. Whilst he has been channelling those nerves in a positive way up to now, the stakes have never been higher and with Ballydoyle also looking to make life difficult, Enable could also meet trouble in-running. Dettori will probably view this as the biggest ride of his career.

One things for sure it promises to be a thrilling climax to the career of a wonderful racemare.

Here’s why fans think Altered Carbon got canceled – Looper

Despite Altered Carbon opening up a whole new sci-fi world to Netflix viewers, fans have cited many flaws in the second season that leave them not entirely surprised by its cancellation. A Reddit userposting by the handle u/KevTravels wrote, "Folks blaming Mackie but it's the abysmal writing that did in the show. And the massive cut in budget!"

Many fans, whether justified or not, don't think Mackie was the right person to play Kovacs no amount of talent can save a role that's just the wrong fit. Still, that's not the only reason they believe Altered Carbon's plug was pulled after season 2. One user believed the second season was lacking clever twists and engaging mysteries, calling it a mediocre love story between Kovacs and Quellcrist Falconer (Rene Elise Goldsberry). Another user went as far as calling the writing "hot garbage."

At times, Altered Carbon season 2 left audiences feeling like it was relying on its world and aesthetics to do the heavy liftingat the expense of character development. A true protagonist isn't clear in the second season, with Quellcrist's story eating up a lot of time and yet another Kovacs reappearing (this one played by Will Yun Lee), making it hard to follow and get invested. After Kovacs was the clear protagonist in season 1, fans were confused about who to root for in season 2.

Whether the characters were paper-thin, the flashy effects and sets were less impressive, or the writing left a lot to be desired, it appears not enough people showed up to the digital stadium. According to Deadline, "Netflix's decision not to proceed with further seasons was made in April and is not COVID-related but stems from the streamer's standard viewership vs. cost renewal review process." As a monster budget even a reduced one is always going to be required for a project of Altered Carbon's scale, it presumably made more sense for Netflix to cut its losses as opposed to bleed cash on another season.

Serving a cause greater than ones self is the highest calling. And its in that highest calling of leadership that Donald Trump has failed us so miserably, Sullenberger says.

Sullenberger, a retired Air Force pilot from a military family, spoke out this month when reports claimed Trump derided veterans as suckers for sacrificing for the common good.

The pilot recalled his own heroics by urging Americans to step up to the plate and send Trump packing.

Eleven years ago, I was called to my moment. Now, we are all called to this moment, Sullenberger says in the ads conclusion. All we have to do is vote him out.

Sullenberger, who is remembered fondly as Sully by New Yorkers, won a place in Gotham immortality when he steered crippled US Airways Flight 1549 to a safe landing in the Hudson River on Jan. 15, 2009. Everyone onboard the flight survived.

The episode, instantly dubbed the Miracle of the Hudson," cheered the spirits of a nation battered by the great recession in the days before President Obama took office.

Kearse, author of many big moments for Seahawks, retires – The Daily Herald

Jermaine Kearses retirement announcement Tuesday seemed at odds with the career that has now officially ended.

Kearse quietly released a statement at 7:50 a.m. via social media stating that he was done playing. He last played with Detroit in 2019 before suffering a broken leg in the preseason that ended his season.

After 8 years playing in the NFL, Im leaving the game feeling extremely grateful and content with what I was able to accomplish out there on the field not only for myself, but my family as well, Kearse wrote. Going through some extreme highs and some extreme lows has taught me a lot about myself and by the grace of God he was able to pull me through the rough times and in the end all those experiences were all worth it.

Thus officially ended a career in which, for roughly a decade, Kearse always seemed to find himself at the center of some of the most memorable moments in Seattle football history.

Kearse, 30, made the winning catches in both of the Seahawks NFC title victories in this decade as well as the juggling, did that really happen? reception that moved the Seahawks to the 5-yard line in the Super Bowl against New England.

But if those were the most memorable, they were hardly the only ones.

Kearse, a graduate of Lakes High in Lakewood, was the second-leading receiver in University of Washington history when he departed in 2011 behind another Lakes High grad, Reggie Williams. Hed committed to UW as a three-star recruit in the winter of 2007, turning down Oregon and Washington State to stay close to home and revive a then-struggling Huskies program.

It was there that his Forrest Gump-like quality of always being in the middle of the big moments first came into bloom.

As a sophomore, he made the catch that set up the winning field goal in UWs stunning upset of a Pete Carroll-coached USC team in 2009.

And with UW trailing in the fourth quarter of a game at California late in the 2010 season and the Huskies needing to win to keep bowl hopes alive, Kearse made a diving, sprawling catch of a throw that Jake Locker later admitted was a bad ball, actually for a 46-yard gain that sparked the final drive that ended in the famous Gods Play touchdown by Chris Polk that won the game for the Huskies, 16-13.

A week later, Kearse caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Locker with 44 seconds remaining for the winning touchdown as the Huskies won the Apple Cup and snapped a seven-year bowl drought.

Undrafted out of UW despite all the numbers and big catches, he signed as a free agent with the Seahawks.

It might be easy to forget now, but Kearse did not make the Seahawks initial 53-player roster in 2012, instead was waived and then re-signed to the practice squad.

He stayed there for two months until an injury to Ben Obamanu opened up a roster spot in late October.

He played mostly special teams the rest of his rookie season, and as 2013 training camp approached he was hardly a sure thing to make one of the most talent-laden rosters in NFL history.

Seattle had Doug Baldwin, Golden Tate, Sidney Rice and Ricardo Lockett returning as receivers, then traded for Percy Harvin, drafted Chris Harper in the fourth round and signed free agent Stephen Williams, who would turn out to be the unexpected star of training camp.

One national publication called Kearse a dark horse to make the team heading into camp.

But Harvins injury and Harper flaming out helped Kearse stay on the roster.

And in the first game of the greatest season in team history, it was Kearse who made the key play, catching a 43-yard touchdown with 10:21 left at Carolina to put Seattle ahead 12-7. The Seahawks would hold on to win by that score, a victory that not only jump-started the season but at the end of it proved to be the difference in the Seahawks having home-field advantage in the playoffs.

He never had to worry about his spot on the roster again, emerging into a regular role in the receiving rotation after Rice went down midseason and Harvin ended up playing only one regular-season game.

And when the Seahawks faced a fourth-and-7 at the 49ers 35 early in the fourth quarter of the NFC title game, Wilson targeted Kearse when the 49ers jumped offsides and the receivers went deep, resulting in a touchdown that gave Seattle the lead for good.

He scored a touchdown in the Super Bowl two weeks later, along with the rest of the receivers gleefully refuting the tag that they were pedestrian.

The 2015 title game was, for more than 60 minutes, the most frustrating of Kearses career the first four times he was targeted, the Packers came away with interceptions, and the Seahawks seemed on their way to one of the most disappointing defeats in team history.

But, the comeback happened. The Seahawks won the toss to start overtime, and given one more shot on a first-down play at the Green Bay 35, Kearse beat Tramon Williams and held onto the ball as they slid into the end zone to send Seattle to another Super Bowl. Kearse excitedly threw the ball into the stands, something he came to regret. Luckily, the fan who caught the ball turned down an offer of $20,000 for it, eventually giving it back to Kearse for a signed jersey.

Two weeks later came Kearses shot at true football immortality with the catch that put the Seahawks on the New England 5 with 1:06 left. You dont need reminding what happened next that turned Kearse from being a potential Super Bowl hero to an unhappy afterthought.

True, Kearse could be frustrating to fans he tended to drop a few easy ones, and he went through the bizarre spell of offensive pass interference penalties in 2016, which turned out to be his last season in Seattle. He was traded a week before the 2017 season to the Jets in the deal that brought Sheldon Richardson to Seattle.

But he never shirked the attention that came with the tough times, always available to talk about the drops or the penalties as much as he was the winning catches.

Kearse remains tied with good friend Doug Baldwin for the most postseason touchdown receptions in team history with six, more than half of the total of 11 touchdowns he had in five seasons with the Seahawks, and also has the longest reception in a playoff game in team history a 63-yard touchdown against Carolina in a divisional playoff victory in 2015.

Hes clutch, Wilson once said. As clutch as it gets.

And as playing legacies go, you could do far worse.

Sonata From Die Bnkelsngerlieder was found among some music sheets bought in the auction of the effects of a Dr. Gehring. The title Die Bnkelsngerlieder means The Bench Singer, the itinerant musician who is singing about the stories he witnesses every day.

Farnaby, who graduated from Oxford in 1592, is most noted for his 52 pieces contained in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book. These pieces, from which Fancies, Toyes and Dreames are selected, are known as genre pieces, whimsical portraits of common, everyday things and feelings and very different from the religiously devout music of the period.

Scheidt, a German composer, organist and teacher of the early Baroque era, is best known for his Canzon Bergamasca, played by brass quintets all over the world.

Holborne, a gentleman at the court of Elizabeth I, composed for many different instruments and was the most prolific of English composers of dance music at the end of the 16th century. This collection of dances for consort (a small group of instruments) was published in 1599.

The Russian composer and teacher Respighi never forgot his studies of historical music, and in 1917 he orchestrated his first Suite of Ancient Airs and Dances. He arranged very old music in the modern clothes of the 20th-century orchestra. This suite is based on collections of Italian lute music that had been printed in the 1880s.

El Gato Monts (The Wild Cat) is an opera in three acts composed by Penella, who also wrote the Spanish-language libretto. It premiered in 1916 in Valencia and has been popular in Spanish-speaking countries.

Ewald was a Russian engineer, architect and composer of music, mainly for conical brass instruments. He composed Quintet No. 1 in 1890.

Parkway Brass is a brass quintet based in the Washington, D.C.-Baltimore corridor. The group performs throughout Maryland and the greater D.C. metro area and is the brass quintet in residence at Christ Lutheran Church in Baltimore. As teachers themselves, the musicians value education and perform educational outreach programs at schools.

The Importance of Play: How Kids Learn By Having Fun – Healthline

Play is one of the most important aspects of a childs life. Why? Because through peekaboo, patty-cake, and playing house, children learn to think creatively and interact socially.

Through play, they develop physically and discover a slew of emotional skills,and they learn how to process the world. In short, play is pivotal to your childs development.

Play is how children learn, says Dr. Tiff Jumaily, a pediatrician at Integrative Pediatrics and Medicine Studio City in Los Angeles.

Whats more, according to a 2012 study, play reduces stress. On the whole, play is associated with responses that facilitate learning [and] work off stress, says Jumaily.

But what are the benefits of play and what type of engagement, toys, and activities do children really need? We asked some experts to weigh in.

While the benefits of play are innumerable play helps children develop cognitively, physically, socially, and emotionally there is more to play than fun and games.

Mayra Mendez, PhD, LMFT, a licensed psychotherapist and program coordinator at Providence Saint Johns Child and Family Development Center in Santa Monica, California, tells Healthline, Play is important because it provides a primary foundation for learning, exploring, problem-solving, and building an understanding of the world and your role within it.

But how do children learn through play? Well, its simple. Play allows children the chance to emulate what they see and practice skills. It gives them an outlet for creativity and experimentation, and play helps them learn how to interact and communicate with others.

Play promotes healthy development and critical thinking skills. It reinforces memory, helps children understand cause and effect, and, according to Mendez, helps children explore the world and their role in it.

Young children learn how things fit together through play. It allows them to use their senses and encourages exploration and curiosity, and these skills are the foundation of intellectual development and cognitive processing.

Play also inspires children to pretend, create, and imagine. Creative, open-ended play helps children conceptualize, brainstorm, and exercise critical thinking skills.

Physically, play benefits children in a few ways, namely in the development of their fine and gross motor skills.

Play benefits motor development by encouraging movement [and the] understanding of spatial relations, promoting motor planning skills, and supporting balance and dexterity, Mendez says. It also supports gross motor skills, such as energy, stamina, flexibility, and body awareness.

Examples of physical play include running, jumping, swimming, block building, dancing, riding bikes, and climbing trees. (When youre providing opportunities for these types of activities, remember key safety precautions from bike helmets to pool supervision.)

Play is also important for social development because it helps children learn how to interact with others.

Through play, children develop an understanding of social expectations and rules, and play provides opportunities to share thoughts and ideas, to listen, and to compromise.

Additionally, play helps children understand and process their emotions.

Kids process their emotions and new concepts through play, Kim Wheeler Poitevien, a child therapist in Philadelphia, tells Healthline.

When a child loses a game, for example, they learn to process sadness, anger, and grief. Playing also helps build confidence and encourages the development of their identity and self-esteem.

The ways children play vary, depending on their age and interests. Here are a few ideas for both parents and kids.

Playing with young children may seem hard after all, babies cannot sit, crawl, walk, talk, or stand. But according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), playful learning can start with babys first smile.

At this stage, children are most interested in faces and learning how to make these faces smile at them and laugh, Jumaily says. Babies love games like peekaboo. It helps teach them about object permanence. They love contrasting colors and textures. Think rattles and bits of crinkly paper, and they love making noise. Let them experiment hitting various pots and pans to see what sounds they make.

Holding conversations with your little one is also very important, as it helps them develop their linguistic skills.

As your child grows, their play options increase. Toddlers love brightly colored objects, like age-appropriate balls, cars, and blocks. Puzzles are a great choice, as are simple artistic supplies, and pretend play is excellent for children of this age.

You should encourage toddlers to engage in pretend play using dolls, blocks, common household objects, or by dressing up, Mendez says.

Read to your toddler on a regular basis and encourage them to color or draw, as these activities will help the development of understanding, cognition, and their fine motor skills.

Preschool-age children are staunchly independent. They have an understanding of the world, and their place in it, and for that reason, much of their play at this age is self-driven and structured.

Preschool age children are striving for independence in everything they do, Jumaily says. Parents will often notice that they insist not only on choosing their clothing, but putting it on all by themselves. For that reason, preschool is a great age to introduce solo activities, like puzzles, magnetic tiles, LEGOs, and tower building.

That said, it is important to note that preschoolers need socialization. It is key to their development. Trips to the playground and park are great ways to encourage this as are games like tag, red light/green light, and Simon says.

Much like preschoolers, elementary and middle school-age kids are very independent. They are also very focused on school-based activities. However, play is still integral to their development.

School-age kids need play too, Wheeler Poitevien says. Encourage outside play with a ball or bubbles, or plan a family game night. LEGO sets, Kinex, and other building toys are great too. Video games also count as play, but these activities should be done in moderation.

Play helps children grow into strong, healthy, and independent individuals. It also helps them develop emotionally and reduces stress. However, a lack of play can have negative and long-lasting effects.

Studies show that when kids dont have the opportunity to play outside in nature, they are at higher risk for attention problems and behavior problems, Jumaily explains. Without proper play, kids do not have the chance to stretch their imagination and build the skills they need to succeed in the workplace and in their life. A lack of play can also stunt an individuals social and emotional development.

A 2018 study by the AAP also found the absence of play can increase stress. Play is not frivolous it is brain building, Jumaily says. When play and safe, stable, nurturing relationships are missing in a childs life, toxic stress can disrupt the[ir] development.

Play is valuable to children very valuable. In fact, the benefits of play cannot be overstated. So run, sing, and dance with your children. Play games with your kiddos, and have fun!

Why Some Experts Say Cannabis Is Effective in Treating Menopause – Healthline

Over one in four female veterans say theyve used cannabis to address symptoms of menopause.

Thats even more than the percentage who report using more traditional types of menopause symptom management, such as hormone therapy, according to a study being presented today during the 2020 Virtual Annual Meeting of the North American Menopause Society (NAMS).

This study highlights a somewhat alarming trend and the need for more research relative to the potential risks and benefits of cannabis use for the management of bothersome menopause symptoms, said Dr. Stephanie S. Faubion, NAMSs medical director and a clinician who specializes in womens health.

Other experts, however, said theres good science behind the connection between menopause symptoms and the bodys natural endocannabinoid system, even if direct research on cannabiss effectiveness in addressing menopause is currently lacking.

In the new study, researchers examined data on a sample of 232 women in Northern California who took part in the Midlife Women Veterans Health Survey.

About half of the women, whose mean age was about 56 years old, reported menopause symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats (54 percent), insomnia (27 percent), and genitourinary symptoms (69 percent).

Of these, 27 percent said they currently use cannabis (in any form) to manage their menopause symptoms or have done so in the past.

Cannabis products were most often used to address hot flashes and night sweats, researchers said.

These findings suggest that cannabis use to manage menopause symptoms may be relatively common, said Carolyn Gibson, PhD, a psychologist and health services researcher at the San Francisco Veterans Administration (VA) Health Care System and lead author of the study.

However, we do not know whether cannabis use is safe or effective for menopause symptom management or whether women are discussing these decisions with their healthcare providers particularly in the VA, where cannabis is considered an illegal substance under federal guidelines.

The study didnt differentiate between use of cannabis products containing the full spectrum of cannabis ingredients, including psychoactive tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and those containing therapeutic doses of cannabidiol (CBD) and other cannabioids but not THC.

An additional 10 percent of the female veterans expressed an interest in trying cannabis to manage their symptoms.

By comparison, just 19 percent said they used hormone therapy or other, more mainstream interventions to manage their menopause symptoms.

This is disturbing because hormone therapy is the most effective therapy we have for menopause symptoms, and the benefits typically outweigh the risks for women in their 50s and within 10 years of menopause, Faubion told Healthline. Cannabis, on the other hand, is not a proven therapy for menopause.

Cannabis use for menopause symptoms was consistent across demographic categories, including age, race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and mental health conditions.

Smoking cannabis or consuming gummies or other products containing the full spectrum of cannabis ingredients, including psychoactive THC, could have mixed results for women seeking relief from menopause.

Cannabis is known to have a sedating effect, so it may have a positive effect on sleep disturbance and reduce symptoms of anxiety, but there is also evidence that cannabis use can result in lethargy, increased anxiety, and can provoke serious psychiatric illness, Samantha Miller, spokesperson for Drug Helpline, told Healthline.

Menopause is associated with cognitive changes, feelings of brain fog and difficulty concentrating. These are also side effects of cannabis use, so using cannabis might actually make these symptoms worse, she explained.

Mood changes and irritability are often prominent features during the menopause, which may be counteracted by the euphoric feelings produced by cannabis use. However, there is evidence of a higher incidence of depression in cannabis users.

Miller also pointed out that there are no reliable clinical studies looking at cannabis use to aid menopausal symptoms.

She notes that cannabis products may be illegal in some jurisdictions and are unevenly regulated.

It would be advisable to obtain these products from a reliable source and start at a low dose to assess any adverse effects, she said.

Anecdotally, however, many women have found cannabis products to be effective in treating menopause symptoms particularly insomnia and hot flashes according to Dr. Junella Chin, the chief medical advisor at CannabisMD.

Hot flashes are due to the hormonal ups and downs of menopause, Chin told Healthline. Estrogen is involved with the bodys endocannabinoid system, and CBD binds to those receptors.

She added that both CBD and THC are known for their sedative effects, which could explain their reported effectiveness against insomnia.

It makes sense that some women find relief with plant-based therapy, said Chin.

Dr. Felice Gersh, an OB-GYN and medical director of the Integrative Medical Group of Irvine, California, told Healthline that beyond hormone replacement therapy, mainstream medicine offers little in the way of relief to women suffering from menopause symptoms other than opioid or NSAID-class painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs.

Cannabis products do offer an alternative to whats out there, she said.

Gersh recommends only organic, hemp-based products containing CBD but not THC to her menopause patients.

She cites the comparative safety of CBD and the lack of regulation of THC products, including raw cannabis.

Marijuana can be grown with a huge amount of herbicides, she noted.

Gersh added that some evidence suggests that excessive use of THC-containing cannabis can lead to cognitive problems.

On the other hand, said Gersh, The cannabinoids found in the hemp plant are very safe and have benefits for things my patients are seeking help for, including pain relief, sleep problems, and hot flashes.

Other than lacking the THC that gets users high, hemp contains all of the 80 to 100 cannabinoids and 300 noncannabinoid chemicals found in the cannabis plant.

Some of those may also play a role in addressing menopause symptoms by interacting with receptors in the brain and in the immune system, said Gersh.

I always encourage using the whole plant for the entourage effect, she said. CBD is one of the major components, but its not the only one.

Searching for the holy grails of chemistry | Opinion – Chemistry World

A lot has happened since 1995. Smartphones, streaming, googling and graphene Youtube stars and Netflix, Amazon and Brexit banking crash, Obama, Crispr and the Mars rover Twin Towers, vaccines, Englands got the same Queen you get the idea. All the wonders and terrors of the 21st century were just around the corner and we were all much younger, still unironically partying like it was 1999. In that year, a group of chemists got together and curated a list of their subjects holy grails. In this special were exploring what has become of that list.

At just eight topics, the list is hardly exhaustive, but nor is it meant to be. There were many worthy and fascinating chemistry queries in 1995, and there are even more today as the original editors noted, these areas are a tiny fraction of the goals in chemistry deserving critical study. Their aim, Richard Zare recalls, was to highlight promising pathways as a challenge to curious minds a gauntlet as much as a grail. You may agree with their choices but I suspect youll have plenty of your own suggestions too. I hope theres at least something that rouses your curiosity, but if not youd still be in good company: in a letter to the issues editors back in 1995 Linus Pauling declined to participate, saying he didnt have any interest in the Holy Grails mentioned.

What is clear is that each grail has posed a challenge big enough, and a prize worthy enough, to attract the attention and effort of chemists for decades. And as Philip Ball notes, its the journey theyve taken that matters, not the destination. Which is what weve tried to focus on in this collection: tracking those journeys and mapping the pathways of science over a quarter of a century, to to ask ourselves, Well, how did we get here? The topics are a lens to look at the often meandering method of science to see how it brings us answers to our questions, but often by indirect routes.

Of course, there have been predictable changes and anticipated discoveries in each area, and much of the progress has been by the patient, incremental inching that typifies good science. But there are also many surprises, and looking back we can see how those unexpected changes have brought new ideas and directions for research. In 1995, cuprates were the hottest thing in high-temperature superconductors, and theyre still the material of choice for most in that area. But two decades later, a few researchers compressing metal superhydrides look like they will actually scoop the prize.

Weve also explored the publication data to reveal other each aspects of these stories. For example, some areas represent a sizeable portion of our community (it will surprise no one to learn that coaxing CH bonds into chemistry attracts more chemists than any of the other grails) while others are niche subjects confined to relatively small groups of specialists. Our bibliometric analysis also reveals something about the character of each field some are highly connected and collaborative, others more insular. And we get some hints of how answers uncovered in one field are connected to questions in another. We also see some of the changes in our society reflected here: water splitting and solar fuels papers, for example, have seen a huge surge over the last decade.

In that respect its worth noting that the Nobel prize in chemistry in 1995 was awarded to Paul Crutzen, Mario Molina and Sherwood Rowland for revealing the impact of CFCs on the ozone layer. 25 years later, the damage is now slowly being reversed, but thats largely thanks to political and economic action, not scientific. These grails (and many other fields of chemistry) could deliver truly transformational technologies, but as we face the immediate crisis of Covid-19 and a looming climate crisis, we should remember that science wont change much on its own.

Still, science has a vital role to play, and its clear that every answer it supplies brings many more questions too. Personally, the most exciting aspect of reviewing 25 years of research has been the realisation that theres so much more to come. What lies ahead waiting to be discovered?

The first holy grail paper was written by IBM researcher Phaedon Avouris, excited by the power of new tools that were enabling chemists to manipulate matter at the atomic level.

In 1981, IBMs Gerd Binnig and Heinrich Rohrer designed the first scanning tunnelling microscope (STM), an invention that soon saw them awarded a physics Nobel prize. Four years later, Binnig patented the atomic force microscope (AFM), a similar device that probes materials atomic structures by measuring the force between sample and tip, rather than electric current as is the case with the STM. Today, many instruments incorporate the two systems into the same device, allowing force and current to be analysed simultaneously.

Prior to these discoveries, Avouris was using diffraction methods to study the chemistry and physics of solid surfaces, but he quickly realised the power of the new techniques. When the STM came along, I got involved early on and started seeing what we usually refer to as the atoms basically some representation of the charge density of the atomic arrangements. We were just totally flabbergasted. It was so revealing, he recalls. It was so different to what diffraction had told us at sort of a macroscopic average structure, there were so many local variations, defects, different domains of structures [revealed by STM].

Avouris and his team would work late into the night to minimise the effect that vibrations made by people walking around the building would have on their ultra-precise experiments. As we went along, we noticed that there were changes on the surface as we were scanning it over and over, he remembers. And after we did some careful experimentation, we realised that some of the changes were not spontaneous we were actually inducing these movements of atoms.

It became apparent that as the STM tip moved, mechanical forces could slide atoms along the surface. By applying a current, atoms could even be made to hop from the surface to the tip and back again. We got excited that besides being able to see the atoms, we could also make changes in that scale, which was really unheard of up to that point. It was tremendous excitement, says Avouris.

A string of stunning experiments followed, showcasing the incredible level of control that chemists could now exert over their samples. In an iconic demonstration in 1990, IBMs Don Eigler and Erhard Schweizer used STM at very low temperatures to manoeuvre 35 xenon atoms across a crystalline nickel surface, spelling out the companys name. Three years later, Eiglers lab used similar techniques to build a ring of 48 iron atoms on a copper surface. This was dubbed the quantum corral due to the extraordinary standing wave patterns produced by surface electrons trapped inside the structure.

After that initial burst of results and optimism, for many years, it was a slowly dawning realisation that it was simply harder than we imagined to take the next steps, says Chris Lutz, who joined Eiglers team in 1990. There was plenty of new physics obtained by arranging well-separated atoms on close-packed surfaces, but it was hard to see the atomic arrangements in any close-packed structure, to identify the element of a given atom, or to put the atoms where we wanted to make a molecule.

Compared to many of the other areas' citation networks, this one is relatively simple with clearly defined clusters of researchers.

The largest node is Gerd Binnig's, who invented scanning tunnelling microscopy and atomic force microscopy.

A major breakthrough came in 2000, when a group led bySaw-Wai Hla, then at the Free University of Berlin,used STM toperform an Ullmann coupling reaction. First they used a voltage pulse from the STM tip to abstract iodine from two iodobenzene molecules. Then they used the tip to drag the two resulting phenyls next to each other, before supplying enough activation energy to fuse them together and form a biphenyl molecule.

Soon after, a group led by Oscar Custance and Seizo Morita at Osaka University, Japan, performed some astonishing room temperature manipulations with an AFM. In 2005, they used an AFM to carry out controlled lateral manipulations of atoms within the top layer of a semiconductor. Three years later they showed atoms in a semiconductors upper layer could be interchanged with atoms coming from the AFM tip. The team even showed that it was possible to distinguish different types of atoms with the AFM.

I think that was definitely a big milestone in atom manipulation, says Leo Gross, the team leader of IBMs atom and molecule manipulation group in Zurich, Switzerland. Gross explains that Custances findings inspired his team to start using AFM, previously having focused solely on STM.

In 2009, Gross team made another leap forwards. By attaching a single carbon monoxide molecule to the AFM tip, they could drastically improve the resolution of their images to the point that they could view individual bonds within organic molecules. The CO tip even enables Gross and his co-workers to distinguish different types of bonds. Last year, they used the technique to study a rare carbon allotrope, whose structure had been debated by theoretical chemists for years. Rival groups had argued that cyclo[n]carbons could either take on a polyynic structure, formed from alternating single and triple carboncarbon bonds, or a cumulenic structure with consecutive double bonds. The problem was that these compounds are highly reactive and very difficult to study.

Gross team started with a masked version of the molecule that had been prepared by Harry Andersons group in Oxford. The masking groups stabilised the material enough for it to be deposited onto an inert surface, cooled down to 5K. Then with voltage pulses we could remove these masking groups and form the ring, says Gross. Then we used our high resolution imaging and what we saw was a nine-fold symmetric structure, where the nine triple bonds become bright, giving more repulsion in the AFM, and the single ones become dark. So from taking these images we could actually find out that its a polyynic structure.

Other technical advances are opening up the possibilities for atomic manipulation. One of the driving forces for this research has been the desire to create nanoscale devices, and ever smaller data storage.

Thirty years ago, it took Eigler and Schweizer 22 hours of continuous work to spell out IBM with 35 atoms. By 2016, it took the same amount of time for an automated STM to write a kilobyte of data, controlling the positions of more than 8100 chlorine atoms on a copper surface. Sander Ottes team at the Technical University of Delft used this system to perform Monte Carlo simulations and to code passages from Richard Feynmans Theres Plenty of Room at the Bottom lecture and Darwins On the Origin of Species.

Today, Lutz is in charge of IBMs nanomagnetism project and is aiming to push the lim
its of data storage even further by controlling individual atoms spins. Starting around the year 2000 we began looking more intensely into magnetic properties, and we built a new machine that could cool to half a Kelvin, and had a magnetic field up to a few Tesla, which let us look at the Zeeman energy to flip the spin of an atom, says Lutz. In 2012, they made a magnetic memory bit out of just 12 iron atoms. With a single current pulse from the STM tip, the IBM team could flip the spin of all 12 atoms simultaneously switching the tiny antiferromagnets between two magnetic states.

And in recent years, the group has developed a way to use electron spin resonance with the STM. This gives them the ability to control the nuclear spins of individual atoms, and even use those atoms as sensors to measure the magnetic properties of other atoms nearby.

It amazes me nearly every day that we are looking at atoms one at a time. Often, I pause and think about how there is one atom that were studying today, sitting inside the helium dewar that Im standing next to, and its likely to be there in just the same spot tomorrow, says Lutz. What that atom does can change my day for the worse or for the better, and its performance represents what every atom of that isotope would do in the same circumstances.

A few years after writing the holy grail paper, Avouris research changed direction and he went on to make major contributions to the field of carbon nanotechnology, before retiring in 2016. But he looks back fondly on his time as an atom manipulator. It is a really beautiful field, it gives you a unique insight into the world of atoms and molecules in real space. I still love it, he says. My happiest years of my research life were when, late at night, me and my postdoc would sit there in front of the screen and admire the exotic landscapes that we saw in front of our eyes.

With better practice numbers, Vols hoping to build chemistry – 247Sports

Brandon Johnson and Deandre Johnson, two players that Jeremy Pruitt spoke highly of on Monday after they flashed for Tennessee in the 31-27 win at South Carolina Saturday night, performed the way they did for a reason.

They were able to practice this fall. Everyday. No time missed due to active COVID cases or contact tracing. Right now, thats a rare feat.

Brandon Johnson caught three passes for 73 yards, including a one-handed grab on third-and-2 it was Tennessees only third down conversion of the game for 33 yards to help spark the Vols, who trailed 7-0 at the time following a slow start.

Brandon is a guy that hadnt missed any reps during camp, Pruitt said. He was at every practice.

Deandre Johnson was the SECs Defensive Lineman of the Week after recording 2.5 sacks, six tackles and two tackles for loss.

Hes been here every day, Pruitt added, and it showed.

Moving forward, with No. 21 Tennessee (1-0) set to host Missouri (0-1) on Saturday (Noon Eastern Time; TV: SEC Network) in the home opener at Neyland Stadium, Pruitt is hoping he can say the same about more players.

He said on Monday that his team couldnt work on special teams during the first four practices of camp, due to a shortage in bodies. Tennessee botched its first punt attempt at South Carolina after the snapped rolled back to punter Paxton Brooks.

Pruitt added that the numbers kept climbing as camp continued, with 50 or more players out for 10 of the next 14 practices.

With no spring ball, so its not like theres any carryover, he said. So just being able to get the guys back and hopefully, through the testing in the next couple days, well get good results and well be able to rep guys in the same spots.

If so, it would be some long overdue continuity on the practice field, which could lead to more players standing out on game day.

I think probably creating a routine and the guys understanding this is the position Im going to play, and what goes with that, thats the things we need, Pruitt said. Its not necessarily more periods.

Tennessees climb in COVID-related practice absences coincided with students returning for the fall semester and a spike in numbers on campus. Those numbersfor the Vols started trending in a more positive direction two weeks ago, when Pruitt said at the time it was the most players available for practice since the first week of camp.

Its hard to get good at football if you dont practice, Pruitt said on Monday. Its hard to get chemistry as a team if you dont practice. The last week, with the exception of the guys that didnt travel, and Warren Burrell and Jaylen McCollough, we had most everybody there.

Hopefully we can continue this week and create some momentum, create some chemistry in all three phases of our team. From the first game to the second game lots of times is when you improve the most. We have lots of areas that we need to improve on.
