Gladys Berejiklian called to give evidence at corruption commission inquiry into former MP – The Guardian

Gladys Berejiklian has said she is pleased to be giving evidence at a NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption investigation into disgraced former Liberal MP Daryl Maguire.

An Icac witness list issued on Thursday revealed the premier had been summonsed and is the only person scheduled to appear on Monday, when the anti-corruption bodys hearing enters its fourth week.

Im pleased to be assisting with those inquiries, she told reporters. And it wouldnt be appropriate for me to elaborate.

Maguire was forced to quit the Berejiklian government in 2018 after a separate Icac inquiry heard evidence he sought payments to help broker deals for property developers.

The current inquiry has heard evidence Maguire sought payments to help broker deals for Chinese property developers.

It is investigating whether Maguire breached the public trust by using his public office and parliamentary resources to improperly gain a benefit for himself or for G8way International, a company he effectively controlled.

The premier was dragged into the saga this week when the commission heard Maguire gave a western Sydney landowner, Louise Waterhouse, Berejiklians email address to help her lobby for rezoning changes that would benefit her parcel of land.

In a recorded phone call aired at the commission, Maguire passed on the email address and suggested the premier would be able to provide a tickle from up top.

Waterhouse told the inquiry Berejiklian never responded to her email, and no zoning changes were made to her property.

Berejiklians former chief of staff Sarah Cruickshank is scheduled to give evidence at the inquiry on Friday.

Maguire will also give evidence from next Tuesday to Thursday.

Shypitka lists priorities as wilflife and land access, health and education – Fernie Free Press

Tom Shypitka of the BC Liberals say his top priorities for Kootenay East and the Elk Valley for the current election are wildlife and land access management, healthcare access for Kootenay East residents and education.

Shypitka, who served at the MLA for Kootenay East in the previous parliament was nominated as the BC Liberals pick to re-contest the seat a second time.

I got in to (politics) because I care about the region, said Shypitka.

When I was asked to take over the helm from Bill Bennett (in 2017) I jumped at the chance and got into it. Within the four years Ive really fallen in love with the job. I love the people of Kootenay East and I really enjoy fighting for their concerns and I want to continue that.

Shypitka explained that wildlife and land access management was his number one priority, citing decreases in populations of ungulates, land access conflicts and increased interest in the area. We have really got to get this under control here.

According to Shypitka the main problem was with funding for the sector.

We are so far behind other jurisdictions such as Wyoming and Colorado and Montana and Idaho for that matter in funding that they make us look pretty sad.

He said that his solution was to rustle up more funding for the sector by ensuring the money from tags and licences came back to the region and revenues through taxes on resources (such as coal) that could kick in over a certain commodity price.

If we can all get together on it, we can protect our wildlife, enhance our land access and rebuild our habitat.

We put a value on our timber, we put a value on our coal, we put a value on our oil and gas, but we dont put a value on our wildlife, and I think thats got to change, big time.

Another big priority for Shypitka is access to healthcare something he said residents in the Elk Valley and Kootenay East were getting the short end of the stick on due to being supposedly shut out of Alberta.

In the last three or four years were seeing a real shutdown of our access to (Alberta) healthcare and thats really troubling to the people of Kootenay East, because the alternative now is to go to Vancouver or Victoria and thats not acceptable.

Theres a lot of theories in why this access has been shut down, Ive got a couple of firm beliefs on why it is, but government really hasnt been able to help me at all clear the confusion on why were seeing this access being denied.

The third big local issue was education.

Shypitka pointed to Isabella Dicken Elementary School as a priority, saying the number of portable classrooms wasnt good enough for the community.

Isabella Dicken has the unfortunate distinction of being the school in BC that has the highest amount of portables in it eight. And now they just added another one. The NDP platformed on reducing portables, that was their big thing, but weve seen an increase in Kootenay East so Id really like to get a handle on that.

Shypitka also listed various BC Liberal campaign promises in senior care and taxation/revenue as a major focus.

On senior care, he said that with an aging population in the Elk Valley it was important that seniors could stay in their homes longer and enjoy the comfort and support theyre accustomed to, highlighting a $1 billion support plan announced by BC Liberal leader Andrew Wilkinson.

On taxes, Shypitka took aim at the NDPs record. Weve seen over 21 new or increased taxes by this NDP government, and yet nothing on the revenue side as far as business is concerned, in fact quite the opposite.

He highlighted the provincial party promise to put the provincial services tax (PST) on hold for 12 months if elected, saying it would be fantastic for the bottom line of businesses struggling in COVID-times.

I really believe the BC Liberals initiate to remove PST for a year is really going to restart our economy and get people back to feeling confident.

Shypitka will go up against the NDPs Wayne Stetski and the BC Greens Kerri Wall in the upcoming election to be held on Oct. 24.

Nile Rodgers On The Immortality Of Guitar, Why He’s Writing More Than Ever | Q104.3 | Q104.3’s QN’A – iHeartRadio

Every few years, articles start circulating proclaiming how the guitar is dead and gone from pop music. Then there are articles celebrating how the guitar is back. Have you felt demand for guitar wax and wane in your career?

Not for me because as a musician, if you dont need me playing on your record, you probably dont need me as a producer. I play on 95 percent of the records Ive ever made, even if theres a guitar player in the band. Ive played on record where there were two guitar players in the band. I play on everything I produce almost.

I cant even remember a record that I produced that I didnt play on. Im sure it exists!

Day before yesterday, I was reading somewhere, talking about a B-52s song called Topaz. They were saying, Wow, listen to how great Keith Strickland has developed. And its true, Keith is playing and he did develop. But Im saying, They part that youre actually talking about is me playing!

I didnt want to say anything because I think Keith has really stepped up.

What else is going on in your world? Are you going to try and get back on tour as soon as possible?

I live for the live show. Ever since I was a child, I always envision myself as a live performer. Its really interesting.

I put up a post yesterday on Instagram of a show that I have never put up before. Its just because I was going back and looking at stuff from the beginning, and I was going, Wow, we were killing!

At the beginning of certain songs I would just improvise and play whatever until the crowd is with me, and I forgot how much fun that is and how wonderful that is. Its that moment that I have to talk directly to a person for a minute.

Im not really known as a guitar player who just goes off [and solos]. I did that when I was a kid playing behind my back and stuff. One day I might do it, just for the fun of it cause it is fun to watch, but it is a little silly.

Fortunately, youre known for doing a much simpler thing. Joe Satriani has to eat his guitar strings every night.

(Laughs) Yeah, youre right.

Its funny that some of the most fun times I have are playing with guys who have to do that, cause then I get a chance to open up and do that. Playing with Steve Vai, I have the time of my life. Playing with Dweezil Zappa, I have the time of my life. Or with Keith Urban, I have the time of my life cause were just trying to rip each other.

My mission is to make people feel good. I write music to make people feel happy. I dont write music to show off. Thats not what I do.

To me, when Im here at home, playing by myself, thats when I show off.

Someone asked me, If you could have anything in life, what would you want it to be? I said, Oh, thats easy. Id like to play better. Thats why when I got to bed at night, I play stuff thats impossible for me to play.

I just wrote this song that Ive nicknamed Arpeggio City. The reason why I wrote it is because its impossible to play. Its like ridiculous.

But you know what? In two months, Ill be able to play that bad boy like its nothing, and Ill be like fire all over this thing. But its not a commercial song, its an exercise. Its harmonically and melodically quite stable, but theres no kid that saying, Oh, I cant wait to buy that song Arpeggio City.

NYCC: Keanu Reeves breaks down the time-bending science behind his first comic, BRZRKR – SYFY WIRE

Keanu Reevesis perhaps bestknown for playing stoic, quiet characters, but he was allsmiles and hand expressions during the New York Comic Con Metaverse panel for his first-ever comic, BRZRKR (pronounced "berserker"). Joined by co-writer Matt Kindt, artist Ron Garney, and BOOM! Studios editor Eric Harburn, the actor took the forefront during the panel for the upcoming graphic novel.

Set in the present day, BRZRKR follows an immortal warrior nicknamed B, whojoinsup with the U.S. government to fight evil in exchange for being studied to find the source of his immortality. The idea partially stemmed while Reeves was talking about future projects with John Wick director Chad Stahelski. After realizing that he wanted to tell a hyperviolent story about an immortal warrior, he began exploring it further.

[B is] compelled to violence, but he doesnt want to kill, Reeves said in the panel (shown below). For us, time speeds up; for him, time is slowing down.

Its certainly a setup worthy ofa comic series, Reeves star power be damned. As his first entry into a new medium, BOOM! paired him up with comics veteran Kindt.

For Kindt, the writer of books such as Folklords and Mind MGMT, the new experience came through discussing and later acting out the book with Reeves. The pair would have long discussions before Kindt would script everything out, and thenReeves would readthe script aloud.

Ive never written something like this before, Kindt said. Its like telling a story through oral tradition.

In addition to providing grisly violence, Reeves hopes Bs story will be relatable and explore the nature of immortality. Reeves hinted at some more sci-fi elements than expected, mentioning how the U.S. government could clone B, or play with his DNA he even threw out quantum mechanics with a little bit of excitement in his voice. There was alsoa point where he got into Bs perfect memory andamino acids, in case you needed more proof how committed Reeves isto this.

Are he and Kindt making it all up on the fly? Absolutely, but Reeves'energy is so infectious you dont really care.

BRZRKR's first issue will debutFeb. 17.

Explained: How and why Kumbh Mela 2021 in Haridwar will be different – The Indian Express

Written by Lalmani Verma, Edited by Explained Desk | Updated: October 10, 2020 10:39:39 pmSaints take part in a religious procession at Sangam confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and mythological Saraswati river, in Allahabad on January 1, 2019. (Express Photo: Ritesh Shukla, File)The mythology behind Kumbh

Kumbh is one of the most sacred pilgrimages for Hindus. According to information shared on a website on Kumbh hosted by Uttar Pradeshs Prayagraj Mela Pradhikaran, the founding myth of the Kumbh Mela points to the puranas (compilation of ancient legends). It recounts how gods and demons fought over the sacred kumbh (pitcher) of amrit (nectar of immortality) called the Ratna of Samudra Manthan. It is widely believed that Lord Vishnu (disguised as the enchantress Mohini) whisked the kumbh out of the grasp of the covetous demons who had tried to claim it. As he took it towards heaven, a few drops of the precious nectar fell on four sacred sites, which we now know as Haridwar, Ujjain, Nashik and Prayag. The flight and the following pursuit is said to have lasted 12 divine days, which is equivalent to twelve human years, and therefore, the mela is celebrated every 12 years, staggered at each of the four sacred sites in this cycle. The corresponding rivers are believed to have turned into amrit at the cosmic moment, giving pilgrims the chance to bathe in the essence of purity, auspiciousness, and immortality.

Religious tourism is the backbone of Uttarakhands economy. The lockdown imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic has given the hill states tourism sector a major jolt.

The annual pilgrimage of Char Dham Yatra resumed late and with restrictions. The annual Kanwar Yatra could not happen due to the pandemic. And now, the Kumbh Mela 2021, which is to be held from January 1 to April 30, is a hope of revival for the people associated with the sector, says Seema Nautiyal, Hardiwar District Tourism Officer.

There are over 800 hotels and 350 ashrams in Haridwar where preparations are underway to accomodate an average 1.25 lakh pilgrims on any given day during the Kumbh. The tourism department was earlier expecting around 10 crore pilgrims, but restrictions imposed to ensure social distancing will curtail the figure. As 156-sq km mela area has been demarcated in three districts of Haridwar, Dehradun and Pauri Garhwal for people associated with hospitality, tourism and civil supply in these districts, and adjoining areas of western Uttar Pradesh, to get business during the religious congregation.

Hundreds of labourers have been working on permanent infrastructure, laying of sandstone at the ghats of Har Ki Pauri and shifting overhead power cables underground to give the area a facelift. A total of 51 construction projects which will be permanent in nature are underway in the mela area. A few projects had started in August 2019, but most began in January 2020. Lockdown had halted the progress for a few weeks after which is resumed in the first unlock.

According to Mela Officer Deepak Rawat, projects worth Rs 320 crore are going on, with December 15 as the deadline to complete them. Rawat claims 70 per cent of the work has been completed. This includes seven bridges, various new roads, astha path, upgradation of police barracks, fire stations and bus station and facelifts of various ghats.

First, the schedule has changed. Kumbh is celebrated once in 12 years and and the previous kumbh in Hardiwar was held in 2010. The next one was to be held in 2022, but is happening a year earlier.

After more than 100 years the kumbh will be held earlier. It is happening because of specific auspicious dates, said Mahant Narendra Giri, head of Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Prishad, who attended various meetings chaired by Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat on the preparations.

Second, crowd management will be tackled differently due to Covid-19. For taking a holy dip in the Ganga on the dates of four Shahi Snans (March 11, April 12, April 14 and April 27), pilgrims will have to register on a website and select a specific ghat to bathe. Each pilgrim will be allotted a specific time to visit the ghat, and will be allowed to bathe only for 15 minutes. The route map of the selected ghat will also be provided on the e-pass.

The mela area and all 107 ghats too have been marked as red, green and yellow zones, according to vulnerability. GIS mapping of the entire area has been done, and if there is crowding at any particular site above the permissible limit, the control room will receive an alert that will be relayed to security force teams available nearby. The crowd capacity of each ghat has also been assessed. Further, since, in the past, stampedes have occurred in the morning or forenoon as people rush to bathe, the administration will increase the time duration to reduce crowd density during these hours.

IG, Kumbh Mela, Sanjay Gunjyal said the portal system will be for Shahi Snans days when the maximum crowd turns up to take a holy dip, and pilgrims will have to produce a pass at the border. Gunjyal said the strategy can be changed further in view of the pandemic.

A staggering seven million devotees attended the last Kumbh Mela in Haridwar in 2010. Officials said the grandness can be attested by the fact that there were 1.5 crore people in the mela area on April 14, 2020 one particular date of shahi snan.

Also in Explained | Should you get yourself tested for Covid-19 just to rule it out?

It is also expected that pilgrims will be able to bathe in cleaner water in the Ganga this year. While inaugurating various projected related to Namami Gange mission in Uttarakhand via video conferencing recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that as it was experienced by the pilgrims at Prayagraj Kumbh, the visitors to Haridwar Kumbh would also experience the clean and pure status of the River Ganga in Uttarakhand.

Aditya Dhar and Vicky Kaushal’s The Immortal Ashwatthama to begin shooting next year in April – The Indian Wire

The year 2019, saw a new young director, coming out and making a mark in Bollywood. That man was, Aditya Dhar, whose film,Uri: The Surgical Strikebecame a sensation in the country. Starring Vicky Kaushal, in the lead, it was a mammoth success at the box office. It was hard to comprehend, that it was Dhars debut film.

Next year, will be the year when he starts his second film. Titled as The Immortal Ashwatthama, the film will star, Vicky Kaushal. It will go on floors in April, next year, as per Dhar.

There is an interesting arch to Adityas second film. Though set in modern times, the film is having its roots in the Indian epic, The Mahabharata. Vicky Kaushal will play the role of a mythological character, given the curse of immortality.

If you remember, Ashwatthama was the son of Guru Dronacharya, who fought for the Kauravas in the battle of Kurukshetra. He was given a curse of immortality by Lord Krishna.

The film is going to be a superhero action film, and Aditya is planning to make the film, a trilogy. Work on the film already started during the lockdown, as per him. Shooting for the film will take place in Europe. Talking about the film, in an interview Aditya said :

We will begin shooting in Europe, primarily the UK, and then head to Iceland. The final schedule will be in Mumbai. The plan may change depending on the COVID-19 crisis in these countries.

Since the role is going to be demanding, Vicky Kaushal will have to bulk up for it and will undergo training in horse riding, and various martial art forms.

While keeping the film on track, the director, Aditya Dhar has already talked with the VFX team. Speaking on this he said:

Since nobody has attempted such a subject before, we dont have a reference point. So, the VFX and design teams have to use their imagination and create (the universe) from scratch.

Backing the film as the producer is, Ronnie Screwvala, who also backed, Dhars debut film, Uri.

It is good to see, Indian directors coming up with new content ideas. We hope Aditya Dhars next film, lives up to its hype. Meanwhile, tell us what do you think about this development below.

Remembering Snoopy, the Red Baron and the Royal Guardsmen – St Pete Catalyst

There was a moment, in the final month of 1966, when it looked as if the written in St. Pete, recorded in Tampa record Snoopy vs. the Red Baron would reach No. 1 on the national pop charts. The Royal Guardsmen, a teen band from Ocala, might become the next Beatles or, at the very least, the next Paul Revere and the Raiders.

Instead, Im a Believer by the Monkees went to the top, leaving Snoopy vs. the Red Baron to lodge at a still-pretty-great No. 2, where it would remain for an incredible four weeks.

All across America (and in Australia, where the Royal Guardsmen record topped the chart for more than a month), kids were marching around the schoolyard singing Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or more!

The bands Chris Nunley and Billy Taylor were Fridays guests on The Catalyst Sessions, remembering, with more than five decades past, that heady time when they came within a guitar string of pop music immortality.

It sold a million copies in that week before Thanksgiving, is what we were told at the time, Taylor said. And everything just went into high gear. The kids in the area were hearing it on the radio, so they knew that it was a big deal.

But we didnt know that it would be such a big thing nationally we just kept on being local kids making good music.

The band went on TV to promote Snoopy and its followup Return of the Red Baron, and in the summer of 67 when the youngest members were out of high school toured the country as part of a package show with Tommy James & the Shondells, Sam the Sham and others.

Snoopys Christmas became another million-seller.

We were touring quite a bit, explained Nunley, and the only thing that kind of got us cheesed off was the fact that all Laurie (Records) wanted was more Snoopy, more Snoopy. They half-heartedly let us cut some original stuff, and its pretty good. Its on more than one CD.

But they didnt push it.

In the end, the momentum ran out, and the Royal Guardsmen went their separate ways in 1969.

Vicky Kaushal”s ”The Immortal Ashwatthama” to start production in April 2021 – Outlook India

Mumbai, Oct 9 (PTI) Filmmaker Aditya Dhar on Friday said his upcoming Vicky Kaushal-starrer "The Immortal Ashwatthama" will go on floors from April next year.

Dhar, who broke out on the Bollywood scene with his 2019 debut "Uri: The Surgical Strike", is once again teaming up with the actor for the new project.

"The Immortal Ashwatthama", billed as a superhero action film set in modern times, is being planned as a trilogy.

Dhar said during the lockdown, his team was actively working on the pre-production of the film, which will be shot in the Europe.

"We will begin shooting in Europe, primarily the UK, and then head to Iceland. The final schedule will be in Mumbai. The plan may change depending on the COVID-19 crisis in these countries," Dhar said in a statement.

The three-part modern-day superhero film, which has its roots in the Mahabharata, will see Kaushal in a mythological character, who was given the boon of immortality.

As per the epic Mahabharata, Ashwatthama was the son of guru Dronacharya, who fought for the Kauravas in the battle of Kurukshetra.

For the part, Kaushal will gain weight as well as receive training in horse-riding and various martial art forms, including krav maga and jujutsu.

Dhar said he has finalised the heads of departments (HoDs) for the ambitious project and begun discussion with the VFX team.

"Since nobody has attempted such a subject before, we don''t have a reference point. So, the VFX and design teams have to use their imagination and create (the universe) from scratch," he added.

"The Immortal Ashwatthama" is being produced by Ronnie Screwvala, who had also backed Dhar''s debut "Uri". PTI KKP RBRB

A Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Jinx? Maybe – Past The Wire

Each year since 1984, on the undercard of the big Breeders Cup Classic, we get to see the kids run in the Breeders Cup Juvenile. Its a chance for the 2-year-old colts to race their way to fame and immortality on the way to a possible Kentucky Derby win or a Triple Crown.

Yet only twice in the races 36-year history has the winner of the race gone on to win the Kentucky Derby.

We should know by now that there are no jinxes in horse racing. After all, Justify shattered Apollos curse in 2018, becoming the first horse to win the Derby (and Triple Crown) when unraced at 2. But for 22 years, the Breeders Cup Juvenile Jinx had complete control over the 3-year-old colts.

Its extended to the girls as well. Only two fillies have won the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies race and gone on to win the Kentucky Oaks Open Mind in 1989 and Silverbulletday in 1999. Thats it.

Even the great 2-year-old Arazi, who turned in one of the greatest Breeders Cup performances in history in the 1991 Juvenile, couldnt handle the 1992 Derby and finished eighth. More often than not, the Juvenile winner has disappointed. Many times they havent even run, already washed up or injured by the time the first Saturday in May comes around.

Not until Street Sense, the 2006 Juvenile winner, won the 2007 Kentucky Derby was the curse broken. And since then, its been broken only one other time in 2016, when Nyquist won both races.

The jinx has continued throughout the other Triple Crown races. Only one Juvenile winner has taken the Preakness Stakes (Timber Country in 1994), and no Juvenile winner has ever won the Belmont Stakes.

Why isnt there more success among the Juvenile winners? There are several theories and facts.

One theory is that the Breeders Cup Juvenile, at 1 1/16 miles, is too long of a race for such young horses, and they get worn down quickly. Two-year-old champions such as Steviewonderboy and War Pass had their careers cut short by injuries before the Kentucky Derby. This theory, of course, has been contradicted by both Street Sense and Nyquist, but it does bear some examination.

According to horse.com, it has been suggested that many [horse injuries] stem from the training and racing of 2-year-olds. Most racehorses begin training at 18 to 20 months of age, a year or more before the skeleton has reached full maturity. Potentially, intensive training at that young age might predispose the horses to career-limiting injuries.

More than likely, though, its because Derby winners may develop more slowly, and you never know when theyre going to peak. Alysheba won only one maiden race in 1986 and ran third in the Juvenile, yet came on strong in 1987 to win the Derby and the Preakness en route to becoming a Hall of Fame horse.

Capote, the 1986 Juvenile winner and 2-Year-Old Male Horse of the Year, peaked too early, wit one third-place finish in six starts at 3. He finished 16th in the Derby behind Alysheba.

On the other hand, Orb, the 2013 Kentucky Derby winner, won only one of four starts at 2. The 2012 Derby winner Ill Have Another won one of three starts at 2, including a disappointing sixth place in the Hopeful Stakes.

That being said, many superhorses are discovered at age 2. Secretariat was named Horse of the Year at 2, and other legends such as Man O War, Whirlaway, Count Fleet, Citation, Seattle Slew, Affirmed and Spectacular Bid all won 2-Year-Old Male Horse of the Year honors. While we would like to see great horses blossom at 2 and continue their winning ways at 3 and 4, sometimes that doesnt always happen.

And its not to say success hasnt found Juvenile winners just for some odd reason, it hasnt found them very often in Triple Crown races. Juvenile winners have won 28 2-year-old championships in 36 years a kind of Win and Youre In commendation for winning the race. The $2 million purse is enticing as well.

But even running in the Juvenile wont improve your chances of winning the Derby. In the 36 runnings of the Juvenile, only six horses who competed in the Juvenile went on to win the Kentucky Derby.

Jinx? Maybe not. But dont start putting your money on the Juvenile winner when the Kentucky Derby Future Wagers roll around unless we have a superhorse come along. Then all bets are on.

The Haunting of Bly Manor Season-Finale Recap: Every Love Story Is a Ghost Story – Vulture

Photo: Courtesy of Netflix

It was never really about the ghosts, was it? Bly Manor has been full of ghosts some real, some symbolic but in the end, the show has been much more interested in what being haunted means for the living.

And so in its final hour having carefully and meticulously assembled all the pieces on the chessboard Bly Manor essentially zooms through the ending, sewing up the main narrative with shocking speed. Lets not forget: Bly Manor has spent more than half of the entire season building up to this moment. Episode after episode turned back the clock to ensure we understood how Dani, Hannah, Quint, Jessel, Flora, Miles, and Viola reached this particular point of no return.

And now that the climax is finally here, it turns out to be well, a little anticlimactic. Heres the short version: Henry arrives, and Viola kills him just long enough for him to experience the afterlife before Owen revives him. Viola then mistakes Flora for her own daughter Isabel, grabs her, and prepares to drag yet another living person to the bottom of the lake with her.

Its here that Dani makes her final stand and given Bly Manors consistent thematic obsessions with grief and guilt and love, it makes sense that the solution to Violas reign of terror at Bly Manor turns out to be empathy. Repeating a phrase she barely understands, Dani calls out to Viola and says, You, me, us, inviting the ghost to share her body and her life. Viola accepts her offer.

All of this happens in the first 15 minutes of this 51-minute finale, and as a result, some of Bly Manors most compelling characters barely appear in the climax of the story. (Personally, Im bummed that Quint and Jessel are basically an afterthought here.) With Viola satisfied, the remaining ghosts at Bly Manor are exorcized. Meanwhile, Henry takes parental custody of Flora and Miles, so Dani, Jamie, and Owen prepare to leave Bly Manor for good.

If this all feels a bit rushed, its because Bly Manor has an elaborate epilogue it is very eager to unspool. Yes, Dani has saved Flora and Miles (despite Jessels apparently inaccurate belief that Miles was already too far gone). But the cost of Danis heroism has been heavy: At some indeterminate point in the future, Viola will take over her body for good.

Having shed one ghost during her time at Bly Manor, Dani picks up another one on her way out the door. This time, she decides to spend whatever time she has left with the woman she loves. The episode offers a highlight reel of Danis life with Jamie: opening a flower shop, visiting Owens new restaurant (which has a punny name, of course), and exchanging rings to affirm their commitment to each other. All the while, Viola lurks in the occasional reflection, waiting for the moment when she can take over Danis body. And after a number of years, when Dani realizes Viola is getting close enough to controlling her that Jamies life is in danger, she gives in, returning to Bly and drowning herself in the lake.

Jamie realizes what has happened, and tries to drown herself in the lake as well. This tragic love story lives in notable contrast to the tragic love story of Quint and Jessel, which ended with Quint tricking Jessel into drowning herself. But despite Jamies wish, remember the foundational conversation of Jamie and Danis relationship: Love is the opposite of possession. Theres still enough of Dani in Viola that she refuses to take Jamies life as well.

So Jamie is forced to keep living on without Dani. And roughly ten years later, if Im doing the math right Jamie travels to California to attend a wedding.

And also, she looks like Carla Gugino now, because brace yourself Jamie is the one who has been narrating this story all along. And she just told this whole story to a group of people that happens to include Henry, Owen, Miles, and Flora, because the wedding is Floras wedding.

I suspect this reveal will be both confusing and polarizing to a sizable chunk of Bly Manor viewers, so let me unpack the logic as best as I can understand it. We already know that, through whatever supernatural coping mechanism exists to spare the trauma of children, Miles and Flora have forgotten everything that happened at Bly Manor (though their adult caretakers, for better or worse, remember everything).

Further: Older Jamies admission that the real manor wasnt called Bly, or even located where she said it was in the story, gives Bly Manor a lot of rope for the various inconsistencies that would otherwise exist here. If Older Jamie is an unreliable narrator which, in itself, feels like a nod to The Turn of the Screw then I suppose we have to accept that the characters we saw at Bly Manor wouldnt necessarily resemble their real-life counterparts at the wedding, or that Older Flora wouldnt have an English accent anymore, or whatever other nitpick you want to get hung up on.

But whether it works for you or not, Bly Manor isnt interested in closing off every loop here. More than any individual, this is ultimately a story about something bigger: how people live on after they die. Viola clung to existence and became a monster. Dani accepts her death and lives on, instead, in the memories of Jamie and now, thanks to this story and the hard-won wisdom in it, shell live on in the memories of Flora. Thats a better, truer kind of immortality.

The series ends as Jamie returns to her hotel room following the wedding, completing the rituals that keep Danis memory alive in her: leaving the door open in case she arrives, and filling the bathtub with water in the hope that Danis face might appear. These rituals havent literally worked yet but like Hannah Grose lighting the candles, they still keep the dead close to the hearts and minds of the living, and that might be enough. The shows final image is a hopeful signal that the people we loved who have died really are with us, even if we cant see or feel them: As the series ends, and Jamie falls asleep in the chair, Danis hand is resting on her shoulder.

And that might seem like a fitting enough grace note for Bly Manor. But I have a piece of advice: When the credits roll on the final episode, dont stop watching, because the show isnt quite finished yet. Instead, you should immediately go back to the premiere. Like a Bly Manor ghost whos tucked away in a favorite memory, cycle back and watch the opening five minutes of the first episode again. If youre like me, itll feel like youve learned a new language; almost every shot, and every line of dialogue, is laden with weight and meaning that you couldnt understand the first time around.

As the older Flora openly notes needlessly, for anyone who has been paying attention Jamie originally offered a ghost story, but ended up telling a love story. Jamie ultimately agrees. And in that context, the finales weaknesses seem a little more tolerable in service of the greater story its telling. The Haunting of Bly Manor opened with a woman who was afraid to look at her reflection in case there was a ghost waiting for her. It closes with a woman desperately searching her reflection in hope that the dead woman she loves will be waiting for her there. And in all the trauma and horror, its clear that she doesnt regret any of it. As Owen said in his wedding toast at the beginning of the season: To truly love another person is to accept that the work of loving them is worth the pain of losing them.

If youre willing to ignore the fact that the credits include names like Older Owen, Older Miles, and Older Henry, you could probably read the reception scene as Jamie seeing people who just remind her of her friends from Bly Manor, instead of literally being older versions of the same people. Honestly, I think that answer makes more sense, and might even be more thematically satisfying a reminder that the ghosts of the people Flora knew and loved are never far from her mind no matter where she goes. But the credits are the credits, so

A (possibly not-hypothetical) question: If there ends up being a third season of The Haunting of [Insert Spooky House] series, what should the source material be? I mentioned in a previous recap that I think Mike Flanagan might have adapted Daphne du Mauriers Rebecca as The Haunting of Manderlay if Netflix didnt already have a new film adaptation of that on deck. But Ill toss out two other possibilities. There are plenty of Edgar Allan Poe stories that could be knitted together into an interesting season The Haunting of the House of Usher, maybe? But my personal vote would be the cherry-picking from the ghost stories of M.R. James (no relation to Henry James). Theyre great and weird and ripe for a smart, modern adaptation probably something like The Haunting of Burnstow, as a nod to his story Oh, Whistle, and Ill Come to You, My Lad. If you have other ideas for source material, leave them in the comments below.

And while were talking classic literature: The whole wedding guest tells a long story for someone else to repeat plot device is very reminiscent of Samuel Taylor Coleridges long, spooky ballad The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

Glad we got one quick shot to say goodbye to everybodys favorite hidden ghost, the plague doctor.

I know its just a plot device, but I refuse to believe this bride and groom decided to spend the eve of their wedding listening to a super-long ghost story from a woman they barely know.

I covered the groom, played by The Room star Greg Sestero, in my recap of the premiere but I didnt realize until now that Christie Burke, the actress who plays Older Flora, started her acting career playing Edward and Bellas daughter Renesmee in the final two Twilight movies.

The song that plays over the closing scene is I Still Believe, by Sheryl Crow.

In a clever bit of marketing, Netflix put Bly Manor up on Zillow this weekend. (Unfortunately, its currently off the market.)

Still wondering what happened to Arthur and Isabel Lloyd!

As we close the book on Bly Manor, Ill repeat a suggestion I made at the beginning of the season: if you want to read a cool old ghost story, pick up The Turn of the Screw. Its the same basic premise a governess raising two orphaned kids in an old English country house that might be haunted but The Haunting of Bly Manor deviates so dramatically from the original story that youll basically be flying blind. Happy Shocktober, everybody, and thanks for reading!

Keep up with all the drama of your favorite shows!

Celebrating the birthday of Guillermo del Toro: more than just a director – Epigram

By Sara Espinosa Rastoll, Second Year, English Literature & Philosophy

Guillermo del Toro doesn't only make films that comprise an engaging and satisfying plot and excellent special effects, but also reflections on the camouflaged monsters that haunt us all.

Towards the beginning of his career as a film director, at the age of only twenty-nine, del Toro shocked audiences with his dark creation Cronos (1993), featuring a vampiric device that offers immortality in exchange for human blood. Watching the film, one is immediately faced with the issue of profit (in this case, in the form of time) at the expense of others. The everyday realities of social order are masked with mythologies that emphasise the horrors intrinsic to them. Instead of being critical of his characters, however, we are made to feel sympathy towards even those that are corrupt. Jesus Gris (Federico Luppi) incarnates an immortal old man that is tempted by a supernatural device but, notably, this character is also one with a family that he very much cares about, as the viewer witnesses through his relationship with his wife and granddaughter. Rather than a conventional film about vampires, del Toro ultimately creates a film about humankind.

Thirteen years later, the director enchanted the public with Pans Labyrinth (2006), a sinister fairytale in which the protagonist, Ofelia, is stripped of her innocence following the Spanish Civil War. Ofelia embarks on a magical journey, guided by a mystical faun, who leads her through three trials. This journey is seen by some critics as a way of shielding herself from the harsh actuality of her situation, whereas others see symbols of the fascist regime in the monsters that Ofelia is made to confront during her adventure. What manages to unite all film fanatics is the underlying battle of good and evil that recurs both in her fantasy world and her real life.

A favourite trope of del Toro is the uncertainty of what is good and what is evil, making it practically impossible to identify them in his fabulous creatures. The faun that guides Ofelia, for example, looks somewhat disturbing but cannot be rationally classed as evil. Del Toro leaves the viewer troubled and perturbed, once again challenging popular fairy tale endings and adjusting genre for his intentions and perspectives about civilisation.

The culmination of his career so far was the Oscar-winning The Shape of Water (2017), a dramatic film starring Sally Hawkins as a young cleaning lady and Doug Jones as an eerie, humanoid amphibian creature. The film tracks an intimate relationship between the two characters, lonely individuals who find harmony in each others presence. The creature is, like del Toros other creations, a peculiar and grotesque figure, but, through its tender depiction, the director manipulates the audience into sympathising with the monster. This is his signature move in a way; pointing out that evil can often emanate from the most unexpected people.

It is with astonishing talent that Guillermo del Toro delivers these controversial messages, and with Tim Burton-esque imagery, his tenebrous style is beautifully reflected in the sinister cinematography. Inevitably, del Toro becomes something more than just a film director: a risk-taking visionary that experiments in all facets of his art. The result of all these creative projects is an acclaimed trajectory that inspires other pioneering artists to do the same kind of exploration but with a fresh new voice and brand.

Over the Moon Review: Lunar Lessons in Grief – Den of Geek

Sony Pictures Imageworks (the company behind Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) deftly balances the magical with the scientific, the complex with the simple, in animating this movie that can best be described as a space fantasy. On Earth its refined by the incredible details, down to the design on the mooncakes, and the photorealistic fireworks acting as rocket boosters. A single spectacular sequence combines crimson-and-golden lion guardians, like something out of an old painting, with the desolate, craggy surface of the moon. Then theres Changes entire neon aesthetic, bright and pulsing with life, as if it were something out of The Lego Movie.

Meanwhile the soundtrack is best appreciated not for individual numbersno single song attains Disney classic statusbut rather as the sum of its parts. There is a clear emotional arc to these varied numbers that when experienced as a whole is remarkable. The movies first few tracks draw their inspiration from traditional Chinese music, with later numbers layering on the K-pop influence, and then ultimately stripping the songs back down to their purest essence, matching Changes various phases.

That said, the songs do peak via the goddess popstar persona, with the most memorable numbers including her epic introductory performance of Ultraluminary and Hey Boy, a fun ping-pong/rap battle between Change and Chin. While the team of Christopher Curtis, Marjorie Duffield, and Helen Park worked together on all of the songs, no doubt it was Parks influence that made these particular numbers soar. (She was behind the 2017 Off-Broadway musical KPOP, in which Ang starred.) Composer Steven Prices alternately playful and stirring score ties it all together wonderfully.

These sequences are so spectacular that it leaves something to be desired by a late in the movie scavenger hunt where Fei Fei begins pursuing a gift to save her family. Unfortunately, it is no more than a lunar MacGuffin: a distraction from the grief that weighs down both Fei Fei and Change herself.

Nevertheless, Over the Moon never loses sight of the fact that this is not a story about gaining something or someone, but rather about learning how to cope with an unimaginable absence. Tragically, Audrey Wells died in 2018 following a long battle with cancer. A prolific screenwriter with a talent for writing across genres (rom-com The Truth About Cats & Dogs, Disneys The Kid and the live-action George of the Jungle), Wells left behind a tremendous gift in this script. This is a heartfelt, empathetic lesson in moving on, written by someone who must have been considering exactly that ordeal from the other side. (It should be noted that Jennifer Yee McDevitt and Alice Wu contributed additional material to the screenplay.)

When it comes to breast health, you are your own best advocate – Lock Haven Express

Every October, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, my colleagues and I stress the importance of screenings. Regular mammograms are important. They give you your best chance at detecting breast cancer early and the best fighting chance against it.

But what if something seems off and your next mammogram isnt scheduled for a while?

Thats when you need to call your care team. Its your body and no one knows it better than you do. If something doesnt feel right during a self-exam, you learn that a family member has breast cancer or had it in the past or you just have questions that youd like to have answered, dont hesitate to call.

If youve been thinking about putting off regular mammograms due to concerns about COVID-19, Geisinger is offering free 15-minute telephone consultations with clinicians from our breast health teams, including our breast surgeons, high-risk providers and genetics team. The screenings are on Saturday, Oct. 17, open to anyone age 18 or older whos concerned about their breast health and highly recommended for anyone with a family history of breast cancer.

If breast cancer runs in your family, you might also consider asking your health provider about having genetic testing done. Not all people who test positive for an abnormal gene associated with breast cancer will get breast cancer, but if markers are found, our genetics team can help you set up additional screenings as well as suggesting lifestyle changes that could keep the disease from ever developing. Definitely good information to have.

If you need cancer care, Geisinger is here to support you with a multidisciplinary team of specialists that may include a combination of oncologists, radiologists, surgeons, geneticists, integrative medicine providers and behavioral health counselors depending on your unique needs. And when it comes to breast surgery, we keep your wishes and needs in mind and offer an array of services including surgery with hidden scars, techniques to keep a natural breast shape, breast reconstruction, clinical trials, innovative approaches to pain management and more.

Once treatments are over, cancer survivors get the support they need. Geisingers Cancer Survivorship Program coordinates care between your primary care provider and your cancer team. You can take advantage of behavioral and nutritional counseling and a range of complementary therapies such as yoga, Reiki, mindfulness and massage. Support groups meet regularly, because many survivors find that sharing their experiences with others whove been through it too can be an important step in healing mind, body and soul.

With breast cancer occurring in an estimated 1 in 8 women, its common to know or be related to someone faced with this unfortunate disease. The good news is you dont have to face it alone.

And since early detection and treatment are the keys to better health, be your own best advocate. If youve got a question about breast cancer, dont hesitate to ask. Whether its October or any other month of the year. My colleagues and I will be here for you if you need us.

Dr. Cottrell is a general surgeon at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

Can CBD Fight COVID-19? – Everyday Health

Perhaps it wasnt surprising that ads touting cannabidiol (CBD) would spring up during the COVID-19 pandemic. After all, the cannabis derivative has been touted in recent years for its antiviral properties.

But this doesnt mean its effective against the novel coronavirus. And for people who take certain medications, it may not be safe.

CBD might one day prove to be helpful for people who have or who are recovering from a viral illness, but the current data dont support its use with the coronavirus, says Jahan Marcu, PhD, a longtime cannabis researcher in New York City and editor in chief of the American Journal of Endocannibinoid Medicine.

If youre using CBD as a shield to protect yourself against the coronavirus, thats a risky roll of the dice right now, he says.

Those who study CBD have been alarmed by some of the claims being made by advertisers. The board of the International Association on Cannabinoid Medicines (IACM)put out a statement in March asking members not to amplify false information that is circulating on the Internet.

Sunil K. Aggarwal, MD, PhD, an integrative medicine physician who uses cannabis in his Seattle practice, notes that there is no evidence that CBD protects against coronavirus infection or effectively treats it, the same message the IACM is working to convey.

RELATED: Scientists Fast-Track Research for Coronavirus Treatment and Vaccine

Cannabis plants, which include both marijuana and hemp varieties, contain hundreds of different compounds. The most famous is tetrahydrocannabinol, commonly known as THC, which is the chemical that makes you high. Another is CBD, which does not create a high.

Hemp plants contain negligible amounts of THC, a key reason why companies have been able to sell a broad array of hemp products. CBD has been especially popular in recent years, with an explosion of offerings featuring the substance in everything from pills and tinctures to coffees and skin cream.

Many CBD products are sold online, with a growing number also available from dispensaries in states that have legalized medical or recreational cannabis.

RELATED: CBD: A Users Guide

Despite CBDs widespread availability, hardly any research has been conducted in human subjects. This is because laws governing the legality of cannabis make these investigations difficult.

The most widely researched use for CBD is for epilepsy, with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)approving the first CBD-based drug, Epidiolex, in 2018 to treat rare forms of the disease. The drugs manufacturer, GW Research, tested it in hundreds of patients before getting approval.

For most other uses, much of the research has involved laboratory animals and test tubes. It is here that CBD has shown promising antiviral properties, as well as antibacterial and other effects, Dr. Marcu says.

CBD may also relieve anxiety and help you sleep, according to a tiny study of 15 people published in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology back in 1981. Researchers found that patients with insomnia taking 160 milligrams of CBD before bed (but not lower doses) slept longer than those taking a placebo.

But as the IACM notes, no human studies have been published regarding CBDs effects on the coronavirus.

RELATED: CBD Medication Reduces Seizures in Children on Multiple Anti-Epileptic Drugs, Researchers Find

Marketers touting CBD often point to a 2017 statement by the World Health Organization (WHO) that says in its pure state, cannabidiol does not appear to have abuse potential or cause harm.

But they rarely mention the rest of the WHO statement that the organization does not recommend cannabidiol for medical use.

The chemical is not side-effect free, with people taking CBD reporting problems including diarrhea, fatigue, and vomiting, according to a 2019 review in Current Neuropharmacology.

For people with chronic health conditions, another issue is the possibility that CBD might interact negatively with certain medications.

A report published on the U.S. National Library of Medicine site warns people on the seizure medications clobazam (Onfi and Sympazan) and valproic acid (Depakene) not to take CBD, since it can increase these drugs side effects or boost the risk of liver injury.

For many other medicines, CBD can impact how much of the drug circulates in the body. CBD targets the same metabolizing enzymes in the liver as many common medications, Marcu says. If youre on other medicines, you must proceed with caution.

RELATED: CBD Oil 101: Uses, Benefits, Side Effects, and More

If you have consulted with your physician and decide you still want to use CBD, its crucial that you buy it from a reputable manufacturer, experts say. Youll want a company that tests each batch of product and lists the batch number on the bottle itself, so you can link it to corresponding test results on the companys website or via a phone call to customer service.

One giveaway a product isnt up to snuff: Its too cheap. Good CBD is costly, with a bottle of tincture typically selling for $60 or more.

As for how much to take, your guess is as good as any. There havent been studies on the various dosages, so nobody really knows, Dr. Aggarwal says.

Trick-or-treat for Halloween? Here’s What You Need to Know – Newswise

Newswise Florida Atlantic Universitys Terry Adirim, M.D., M.P.H., M.B.A., chair and professor of pediatrics, Integrative Medical Sciences Department, and senior associate dean for clinical affairs, FAUs Schmidt College of Medicine, provides answers to some of the most frequently asked questions and offers helpful tips regarding COVID-19 and trick-or-treating during the pandemic. Adirim is a physician executive with senior leadership and extensive experience in academic medicine and the federal government. Prior to joining FAU, she served as principal deputy assistant secretary of defense for health affairs for the United States Military Health Systems, a $50 billion complex acute care delivery system that serves 9.5 million beneficiaries. Her expertise includes pandemic planning and response, health care quality improvement and patient safety, and health policy and management.

This depends on several factors:

In communities with low case rates, it may be relatively safe to trick-or-treat but really depends on your tolerance for risk. The risk is not zero anywhere in the U.S. and is higher in some communities than others.

If your child has a medical condition placing him or her at higher risk for serious disease, avoid trick-or-treating and choose an alternative way to celebrate. Consult with your pediatrician for advice. If you do decide to let your children go trick-or-treating this year, avoid large crowds and indoor activities with others. Consider limiting the amount of time and locations where they are going. Also, make sure that they are wearing masks at all times. Incorporate the mask into their costume, but dont depend on the costumes mask for protection.

In general, avoid large gatherings, avoid indoor activities with people outside of your household and wear face masks (not just costume masks). It would be prudent to limit the amount of time trick-or-treating and especially limit the amount of time at other peoples homes (less than 15 minutes). Make sure your children are wearing masks at all times and practice social distancing. Accompany your children to make sure they are wearing their masks and social distancing at least 6 feet apart. Carrying hand sanitizer is a good idea, too.

There are other fun things that families and children can do that are safe or safer this Halloween:

The CDC has posted guidance on Halloween activities divided by lower risk, moderate risk and higher risk activities. Lower risk activities include things families can do at home such as decorating or carving pumpkins, while moderate risk activities include one way trick-or-treating with children picking up pre-made bags of candy at neighbors doorsteps, and higher risk activities include those that occur indoors such as haunted houses and traditional trick-or-treating. The lists of activities are available at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/holidays.html#halloween.

With traditional trick-or-treating where a child (or adult) goes door-to-door, there are multiple exposures to people who could be infected with COVID-19. The more homes you visit, the higher the risk of the virus being passed onto the child (or adult) who could then pass the virus to a family member or someone else who is vulnerable. This is why alternatives should be considered. If a family chooses traditional trick-or- treating, they should limit the exposures, wear masks at all times and social distance as much as possible.

There are several considerations in planning any parties for Halloween this year. These include size of the party, the participants, the location and what is being served. If planning a party, its best to limit the party to 10 or fewer people, hold the party outdoors where the risk is lower, plan activities that allow for social distancing and do not serve alcohol to the adults. Everyone also should wear masks.

People should consider alternatives to answering the door to trick-or-treaters. These include placing pre-prepared bags of goodies at the door so the little ones can take one and go or stand outside to deliver the candy while maintaining social distancing and wearing a mask. If there are high-risk individuals in the household, consider not answering the door to trick-or-treaters and leaving bags of treats outside the door.

Putting out a tray of pre-packaged bags of goodies for the little monsters, ghouls and goblins may be a better alternative and lower risk than opening the door for all trick-or-treaters. Children (and their adults) should carry hand sanitizer while they are out. The most risk is through person-to-person contact as opposed though contact with objects, but its best to wash hands frequently and carry hand sanitizer.

The safest environment is home. Alternative activities at home can include family-only activities such as decorating, dressing up, carving a pumpkin, and making candy or caramel apples. Also, you could consider hosting a Zoom party with friends.

It is not advisable to drive to other neighborhoods to trick-or-treat. Going to another neighborhood has the potential to spread infection from one area to another. It is better to stick closer to home and limit the number of houses you are visiting if you decide to trick-or-treat.

Only consume candy that is individually wrapped. If you want to be the safest, you could wipe off the outside of the wrapper or wait 24 hours before touching the candy. After touching any items you get from someone else you should wash your hands or if hand washing is not available, use hand sanitizer. Please do not put any disinfectant on the candy.

Trunk-or-treatis a Halloween activity in which people decorate their cars and then go to a central location, most likely a church or school parking lot. While this is not a no risk activity, it could be a good alternative to traditional trick-or-treating as long as the number of people involved is limited, everyone wears a mask, and people maintain physical distancing. Also, outdoor activities are lower risk than indoor activities.

Alternate Halloween activities may be a better idea for teens than traditional trick-or-treating. Some of these lower-risk activities could include an outdoor party with 10 or fewer friends or a trunk-or-treat party outdoors. For any activity, it is important to limit the number of participants, wear a mask and maintain physical distance greater than 6 feet apart.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, between 2010 and 2014, U.S. municipal fire departments responded to almost 16,000 fires that involved dryers and washing machines. Of those statistics, dryers were the culprit of 92 percent of them. While it might seem obvious to never put anything that can catch on fire in your dryer, its easy to just toss those pants you spilled gas on in the dryer without thinking. Here are13 ways to de-stink your clothes without washing them.

While tossing your activewear into the dryer wont damage the machine itself, it could ruin your clothing. Since most activewear is sweat-wicking or even coated to protect from the suns rays, its definitely not dryer-friendly. Drying your activewear in the dryer and exposing it to all that high heat and friction can be damaging to the functional components that these technical fabrics are developed for, according to Brit Turner, co-founder of Fit Atelier. The heat can also wear away on any elastic properties that your garments may contain and weakens the materialleading to tears, holes, picks, and runs. Instead, Turner suggests hanging or laying your activewear flat to dry after washing it in a cold or delicate washing cycle. These are theworst laundry detergents you can buy, according to Consumer Reports.

Treat your undergarments with respect. Put bras in special lingerie bags and remove them and hang them from the washing machine or better yet hand wash and hang dry. These are theonly dryer sheets you should be using.

What Is a Holistic Veterinarian, and How to Find the Right One for Your Pet? – Yahoo Lifestyle

What Is a Holistic Veterinarian, and How to Find the Right One for Your Pet?

These experts are trained in natural remedies such as food, herbal medicine, and acupuncture.

Natural remedies such as food, herbal medicine, and acupuncture aren't just for humans. They are treatments for your dog, cat, or guinea pig, too, and they come from a holistic veterinarian, who uses a combination or conventional medicine and natural remedies to treat your pets' ailments.

But holistic veterinarians do more than use natural remedies. "A holistic veterinarian is looking at the pet as a whole, where everything is connected, versus just treating symptoms," explains holistic veterinarian Dr. Katie Woodley, DVM. They're concerned with sousing out the root cause of a problem, she says, and then treating that underlying issuenot just reducing its symptoms. For example, if your pet has an allergy, a conventional veterinarian might treat the problem with steroids, but the problem could return as soon as steroids are no longer administered, Dr. Woodley says. But a holistic veterinarian would look for the root cause of the allergic reactionsuch food or environmentand seek to resolve the issue in a way that does not come back, she says.

There's nothing wrong with conventional medicine, of course. Both conventional and holistic "methods have their strengths and weaknesses," says Dr. Gary Richter, DVM, owner of Montclair Veterinary Care and Rover health expert, who practices integrative medicine, which is a combination of both methods.

Both conventional and holistic veterinarians receive the same conventional medicine training, but holistic veterinarians further their education through the study of practices such as food therapy, herbal medicine, acupuncture, homeopathy, aromatherapy, and more, Dr. Woodley explains. Pet parents might seek a holistic veterinarian for a number of reasons, Dr. Richter says: They might prefer a holistic philosophy for their own healthcare, and want their pet to experience the same. Or, he says, they've tried conventional medicine and haven't seen the results they ideally want. A pet that's in pain, for example, may not improve with medicationbut a holistic veterinarian could try acupuncture, supplements, or herbal medicine to aid other medications, Dr. Woodley says.

Other unique treatments and services holistic veterinarians may offer could include chiropractic care, ozone therapy, or homotoxicology, says Dr. Richter, who adds that "some [treatments] are more scientifically based than others and what specific therapies are offered by a holistic veterinarian varies greatly based on their education, experience, and personal philosophy."

To find the best holistic veterinarian for youand for your pet's needsDr. Richter recommends going to the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association's website, where you can search for holistic veterinarians in their area. There, you'll also be able to see what unique certifications a veterinarian hasso, for example, if you think your pet needs acupuncture, you can filter the results to find holistic veterinarians that provide acupuncture service in your area, Dr. Woodley says. It's always smart to check reviews too, she adds, "to see if other people have found them helpful for the care of their pet." Perusing their website and social media might help you get a sense of their philosophy, she says, and help you to determine "if it resonates with you as a pet parent."

Australia Will Have Its Own Centre for Disease Control, Labor Party Vows – Global Biodefense

A Labor government would set up an Australian Centre for Disease Control to strengthen the countrys preparedness for future pandemics as well as boost efforts to deal with chronic illnesses.

Opposition leader Anthony Albanese, announcing the initiative, said Australia was the only OECD country not to have such a centre.

The country went into COVID-19 with less than one mask for every Australian in the National Medical Stockpile, an over-reliance on global supply chains, and badly stretched aged and health care systems.

These failures have contributed to the tragic deaths of almost 900 Australians 673 of whom were aged care residents and 28 linked to the Ruby Princess debacle and more than 27,000 infections.

The centre would have three broad functions

The centre would run regular drills like Exercise Sustain in 2008. This was the last time such a pandemic preparedness exercise was held.

It would manage the National Medical Stockpile, and work with other countries on regional and global preparedness.

Albanese said Australias response to COVID was too slow, too reactive and too un-coordinated.

We cant be left playing catchup again.

Labors health spokesman, Chris Bowen, said health experts had been calling for such a centre for more than three decades.

We know that almost 90% of Australian deaths are associated with chronic disease but 38% of the chronic disease burden is preventable. An Australian centre would save lives and ease the pain of chronic illness, Bowen said.
