Behavioral health panel explores effective interventions for employees – NJBIZ

The behavioral health effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have resulted in increased drug use and subsequent overdoses, with overdose deaths in New Jersey increasing by 8% from January to August of this year. A tally of 309 in May was the highest ever in the state, according to, New Jersey Association of Mental Health and Addiction Agencies Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer Debra Wentz.

Wentz

Wentz shared this, sourced from a Trenton Times report, and more during NJBIZs virtual Behavioral Health Panel discussion on Tuesday afternoon.

She was joined by panelists Dawn Belamarich, CEO of Recovery Centers of America at Lighthouse; Donald Parker, president of behavioral health care transformation services and integrative health and medicine at Hackensack Meridian Health Carrier Clinic; and Dr. Frank Ghinassi, senior vice president of behavioral health and addictions service line at RWJBarnabas Health.

So with triple-digit increases in legal and illegal substance use and alcohol use as well and an 86% increase in gun sales, according to Parker, the largest increase in U.S. history what signs should employers look for when employees are struggling, and how can they provide effective interventions?

Employers should look for changes in behavior, Belamarich said, including isolation, increased fear or anxiety on the job, or an inability to complete tasks that were historically easy to complete. To keep a watchful eye over employees throughout the trials of 2020, Recovery Centers of America at Lighthousefocused on communication and early intervention including hosting regular town halls.

During the Oct. 27 panel discussion, Dr. Frank Ghinassi, senior vice president of behavioral health and addictions service line at RWJBarnabas Health, highlighted the importance of accessible behavioral health care, noting mobile crisis teams and also hotline numbers. Some of those resources are provided here:

The open dialogue since we launched into this in March has been helpful because behavioral health care workers are really at the forefront of helping [people in distress] Belamarich said.

But getting employees to seek help isnt always easy, Ghinassi explained.

Stigma still runs deep in the veins of the typical rugged individualism that seems to define America, he said.

For health care workers, the need to seek that care is as important as those in other fields. During the pandemic, its been especially important.

You think about a health care worker who usually is very compassionate people [sic] and wants to help people do the right thing during very tough events, including patients dying not being able to help them, in many cases managing from outside the room as patients were taking their last breaths, is really antithetical [to our work], Parker said.

Frontline health care workers at HMH have been given the opportunity to decompress and unpack what they experienced at the end of their shifts during the pandemic, rather than bringing the stress home, according to Parker.

Belamarich noted that innovation and flexibility have been important for companies like hers to be good employers during this time. For example, children are in remote and hybrid schooling scenarios, which is new for not only the students but their parents.

Flexibility on the part of the employer could help reduce the stress level employees have over such changes.

We all walk around with a beaker thats got a level of water in it. And under stress that water level gets higher and higher and for many people, that water level is right at the top, so just about anything creates a spill, Ghinassi said. For individuals who already were struggling, maybe living paycheck to paycheckthis has taken an already difficult situation and made it an almost impossible one.

COVID-19 Beyond the Numbers: Taking control of your health in a pandemic – KELOLAND.com

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) As coronavirus cases skyrocket, doctors say the best way to keep from catching it, is to follow CDC guidelines: wash your hands, social distance and wear a mask.

But beyond that, integrative medicine physicians, who focus on the entire aspect of a patient, including both mental and physical health, there is more we can all be doing to take better care of ourselves.

In COVID-19: Beyond the Numbers, we see how lifestyle choices can help boost your immune system.

One way to boost your immune system is to see food as the first line of defense.

No matter what food plan you subscribe to, adding more plant-based foods and vegetables to your diet is always a good place to start.

Dr. Flickema, says eating healthier and getting better sleep is key to a healthy immune system. So is reducing stress through exercise and mindfulness practices like meditation.

Anytime you down regulate inflammation in your body overall, most body functions do better. Its another way to help your immune system function better, Dr. FLickema said.

When President Trump was hospitalized for COVID-19, he was given a variety of medications and supplements, including Vitamin D and Zinc.

Dr. Flickema recommends a daily multivitamin, which should contain zinc. She says you could supplement that with an additional dose of Vitamins D and C, as well as turmeric, which studies show decrease inflammation.

Dr. Flickema says instead of just fearing the virus, it should motive us all to take steps to improve our health. Now we all have reason to make some good positive changes with our lifestyle, she said.

While even the healthiest person may contract COVID-19, adapting a healthier lifestyle could help prevent the most severe symptoms of the disease.

However, its best not to believe the hype over some products. According to the Mayo Clinic, the supplement colloidal silver, which has been marketed as a COVID-19 treatment, is not considered safe or effective for treating any disease.

NIH awards over $100 million to examine biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease in adults with Down syndrome – UCI News

Irvine, Calif., Oct. 22, 2020 The Alzheimers Biomarkers Consortium Down Syndrome (ABC-DS), a multi-institution research team, co-led by members from the University of California, Irvine, has been awarded an unprecedented five-year, $109 million grant by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), to expand research on the biomarkers of Alzheimers disease in adults with Down syndrome.

UCI principal investigators Elizabeth Head, PhD, professor and vice chair for research in the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, and Mark Mapstone, PhD, professor in the Department of Neurology, both at the UCI School of Medicine, are renowned researchers in the area of aging and Alzheimers disease in Down syndrome. Together, they will co-lead the international project, along with their colleagues from the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Wisconsin, aimed at improving the quality of life of our aging population through advancing progress toward effective prevention and treatment of Alzheimers disease (AD).

Its an honor to be involved in this landmark study and to participate in an historic opportunity to collaborate with world-class researchers across the world in an effort to better understand Down syndrome and aging, said Head. Not to mention, the timing of this announcement couldnt be more appropriate, considering October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month.

Other members of the team include Ira T. Lott, MD, professor emeritus in the Departments of Pediatrics and Neurology at the UCI School of Medicine. Lott is an award-winning pediatric neurologist who initiated the Down Syndrome Program through UCIs Alzheimer Disease Research Center 25 years ago. Eric Doran, MS, manager of the UCI Down syndrome research program, follows people with Down syndrome as they age. Other UCI schools participating in the cross-disciplinary team include the School of Biological Sciences and UCI Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders (MIND). David Keator, PhD, research professor in the UCI Department of Psychiatry & Human Behavior, and Michael Yassa, PhD, director of the UCI Center for Neurolobiology of Learning and Memory, and professor in the Department of Neurobiology & Behavior at the UCI School of Biological Sciences, both have critical roles in the ABC-DS program overseeing the neuroimaging component of the study.

Its tremendously encouraging to see this kind of support for Alzheimers disease and Down syndrome research, said Michael J. Stamos, dean for the UCI School of Medicine. The awareness is building on a national scale and is certainly reflected in the environment at UCI, where we recently approved a new Center for Down syndrome research that will get underway in the coming months.

Down syndrome is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder affecting over 250,000 individuals in United States. People with Down syndrome have a very high risk of developing Alzheimers disease and nearly all have the brain pathology (amyloid plaques) of Alzheimers at death.

Their risk is thought to come from the fact that they have three copies of chromosome 21, where a key gene that produces amyloid is found. Because they have three copies of the gene, instead of two, they overproduce amyloid which is the key pathology of Alzheimers disease, said Mapstone.By expanding our research and increasing our studies involving Alzheimers risk in people with Down syndrome, we have a tremendous opportunity to better understand the development of the disease. This may lead us to new preventative therapies and treatments for Alzheimers in people with Down syndrome and the general population.

Funding support for this award is provided by NIHs National Institute on Aging, the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the INCLUDE (INvestigation of Co-occurring conditions across the Lifespan to Understand Down syndromE) project. The INCLUDE project seeks to investigate conditions that affect individuals with Down syndrome and the general population, such as Alzheimers disease, autism, cataracts, celiac disease, congenital heart disease and diabetes.

Alzheimers Biomarkers Consortium Down Syndrome (ABC-DS) includes a cross-disciplinary team from the University of California, Irvine, along with other research teams from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Cambridge, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, New York State Institute for Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities, University of Kentucky, John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Massachusetts General Hospital, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, University of North Texas Health Science Center, University of Southern Californias Mark and Mary Stevens Neuroimaging and Informatics Institute and the Alzheimers Therapeutic Research Institute at the Keck School of Medicine of USC.

The research teams will assess and examine a wide range of data from biofluid biomarkers to genetic factors, neuroimaging, and everyday cognitive and psychological function. Researchers will see participants every 16 months for up to four visits.

This research will be funded by NIH grant U19AG068054. For more information, visit: https://www.nia.nih.gov/health/abc-ds-information-patients-and-families.

Alternative Medicine During COVID-19 The University News – The University News

When people think of the impact of COVID-19, they typically assume the drastic impact its made in the world of medicine. Most often, medicine is seen only as the treatment of human health through scientific protocol. However, there is another side called alternative medicine. Those who practice or rely on alternative medicine tend to use more natural treatments rather than the standard treatments that have more scientific research behind them. After the abrupt arrival of COVID-19, the alternative medicine community has distinguished its own methods to deal with the virus.

Although there is some controversy surrounding the beliefs of some members of the community, some of their practices have actually been deemed helpful during COVID-19. Since a vaccine has not yet been developed to fight against the virus, people are left to use natural methods to try and protect themselves. According to a journal published in Acta pharmaceutica Sinica. B., China has been encouraging citizens to follow traditional Chinese and western medicine techniques (a form of alternative medicine). They announce, Traditional Chinese medicine treatment was included in the third version of integrative treatment protocolA body of evidence from clinical practice and research has shown that integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine played an important role for Chinas successful battle with COVID-19. One of the recommended methods was taking Forsythia and Honeysuckle flower tablets in order to alleviate the cough or fever symptoms related to the virus. Aside from China, people in America have also begun to follow natural methods in the recovery process from COVID-19, mostly because there is no direct cure as of yet.

To better understand the stance of alternative medicine supporters, a few institutions have put out their own statements on their protocols amidst COVID-19. A majority of alternative/holistic medicine institutions agree to follow some of the recommendations set out by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), but also provide methods of their own. The British Holistic Medicine Community compiled a list on ways to incorporate healthy living and eating, natural remedies and supplements and other resources to combat COVID-19 and its effects. The St. Louis Institute for Functional Medicine has put out guidelines in regards to how they want to help their patients with COVID-19. According to a post on their Facebook page, they are still providing antibody testing and COVID-19 screenings. They are also providing virtual care to their patients who may not be comfortable going to a doctor who practices science based medicine.

On another note, after the news of a potential vaccine coming out there has been backlash from the anti-vaccination community (typically a part of the alternative medicine community) and their efforts to oppose it. An article put out by the Washington Post explains that the pandemic has actually caused more people to support the anti-vaccine movement. Supposedly, a viral video released by Judy Mikovits, a discredited scientist, scared many Americans into believing her claims of a Plandemic. The video went viral with over eight million views and conspires that the pandemic is a hoax and was created by the government. Ultimately, with the population of the believers of this video and the anti-vaxx community population as well, there is a split on whether Americans will actually take the vaccine. A recent poll done by the Pew Research Center found that, nearly as many (49 percent) say they definitely or probably would not get vaccinated at this time. Intent to get a COVID-19 vaccine has fallen from 72 percent in May, a 21 percentage point drop. The drop of those who do not plan on getting vaccinated due to false claims, has ultimately slowed down the pace at which medical professionals are trying to release the vaccine. It has also risked the health of many individuals as many refuse to follow CDC guidelines to promote safe practices amidst a pandemic.

All in all, the alternative medicine community has found their methods that work for them during the pandemic. Their practices have both positive and negative responses, yet they learn to adapt and progress by gaining knowledge on COVID-19, as we all do.

AgeX Therapeutics Sublicenses Stem Cell Line ESI-053 to ImStem Biotechnology for Development of Cell Therapy Candidate IMS001 for COVID-19 and Acute…

Oct. 28, 2020 12:00 UTC

ALAMEDA, Calif. & FARMINGTON, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- AgeX Therapeutics, Inc.(AgeX: NYSE American: AGE), a biotechnology company developing innovative regenerative therapeutics to treat human diseases to increase healthspan and combat the effects of aging, and Imstem Biotechnology, Inc. (ImStem), a biopharmaceutical company developing embryonic stem cell (ESC) derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), today announced that ImStem has obtained from AgeX a non-exclusive, royalty-bearing sublicense to use AgeXs clinical-grade ESC line ESI-053 to derive ImStems investigational MSC product candidate IMS001 for development in COVID-19 as well as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) from other causes.

ImStem will endeavor to file one or more investigational new drug (IND) applications for IMS001 in COVID-19 and/or ARDS with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or equivalent EU regulatory agency within 18 months. Under the agreement, AgeX will be entitled to receive revenues in the form of royalties on the sale of IMS001 if successfully developed by ImStem and approved for marketing by the FDA or foreign regulatory authorities, as well as a share of certain other revenues that ImStem may receive in connection with the development or commercialization of IMS001, in COVID-19 and ARDS.

This latest sublicensing arrangement between AgeX and ImStem is a continuation of AgeXs strategy to expand access to its ESI stem cell lines for use in the generation of cellular therapies. An ImStem publication in Stem Cell Reports (2014;3:115-130) showed in a mouse model of multiple sclerosis that MSCs derived from ESCs outperformed adult bone marrow MSCs. This ultimately led to research and commercial sublicense agreements for the ESI-053 ESC line by ImStem to develop IMS001 as an allogeneic, off-the-shelf and industrially scalable MSC product candidate. Earlier this year, the FDA cleared an IND application for IMS001 in multiple sclerosis. IMS001 is believed to be the first MSC product derived from an ESC line to be accepted for a human trial by the FDA.

Results from early clinical studies conducted in China by unrelated groups using different MSC products suggest MSCs warrant further exploration in COVID-19. First, a human study published in Aging and Disease (2020;11:216-228) showed that an intravenous infusion of adult-derived MSCs reduced COVID-19 symptoms and improved functional outcomes in seven treated patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. The MSCs appeared to be safe and well tolerated. Second, a clinical study published in Stem Cell Research & Therapy (2020;11:361) demonstrated that 12 severe COVID-19 patients who received an infusion of umbilical cord MSCs recovered without requiring mechanical ventilation and were discharged home. Even before being explored in COVID-19, MSCs were being investigated as a therapeutic option in ARDS, and emerging data in preclinical models is encouraging. However, the manufacturing scalability of adult MSCs may limit their use. ARDS is a respiratory condition characterized by inflammation and increased endothelial and epithelial permeability to protein, leading to fluid accumulation in the lungs, hemorrhage, cell injury, diffuse alveolar damage, and blockage of oxygen from getting to vital organs. ARDS affects around 200,000 patients in the U.S. every year, accounts for 10% of intensive care admissions, and has a mortality of approximately 40%, with 75,000 deaths in the U.S. annually. No specific direct therapies exist for ARDS and only supportive treatment is available.

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact hundreds of millions of people, with many countries now in the midst of a second wave. Antivirals, antibodies and cell therapies may all ultimately play a role in combating this disease, depending upon severity or stage. We are glad to expand our relationship with ImStem, so it can now utilize AgeXs ESI-053 stem cell line to develop its cell therapy candidate IMS001 for COVID-19 as well as acute respiratory distress syndrome more broadly, said Dr. Nafees Malik, Chief Operating Officer of AgeX. This latest sublicense is an example of AgeXs strategy to place our technologies in the hands of high-quality industry and academic partners, with this deal marking the sixth research and commercial arrangement AgeX has entered into this year.

The ESI stem cell lines are distinguished as the first clinical-grade human pluripotent stem cell lines created under current Good Manufacturing Practice as described in Cell Stem Cell (2007;1:490-4). They are listed on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Stem Cell Registry and are among the best characterized and documented stem cell lines in the world. ESI cells are among only a few pluripotent stem cell lines from which a derived cell therapy product candidate has been granted FDA IND clearance for human studies.

We welcome the opportunity to continue to collaborate with AgeX and explore future development of our mesenchymal stem cell IMS001 product in COVID-19 and ARDS from other causes. Importantly, our product may overcome the important issue of limited manufacturing scalability associated with adult tissue derived MSCs, commented Xiaofang Wang, M.D., Chief Technology Officer of ImStem Biotechnology.

Can biotechnology make PFAS and other so-called forever chemicals degradable? – CosmeticsDesign.com USA

Allonnia is a new company dedicated to finding and using synthetic biological solutions to waste. Just this month, the venture spun out from the Ginkgo Bioworks Ferment Consortium.

The Corsotium exists as part of the biotech companys business in order to find way to partner and innovate in the biological engineering space and to develop new companies that can effect change in existing markets.

We started the Ferment Consortium because we believe that with the right partners and funding, biology can progress solutions to urgent challenges, says Jason Kelly, CEO and Co-Founder of Ginkgo Bioworks, in a recent media release about the new company.

Investing in Allonnia, he says,is a perfect fit for that mission, and we're incredibly fortunate to have Nicole [Richards] at the company's helm. Her knowledge and credibility will be invaluable in helping Allonnia quickly bring innovative environmental solutions to market.

Explaining the premise behind the new company further, Kelly say,As one of biology's fundamental roles in nature is to break things down, there is a huge diversity of microbes and enzymes that can clean up waste. This application of biology represents both an enormous market and a worldwide environmental challenge.

Waste pollution is quickly becoming one of the most pivotal environmental issues impacting both public and planetary health, and I'm thrilled to be joining a company focused on solving these critical challenges in new ways, says Nicole Richards, who serves as Allonnias first CEO.

Our ultimate goal, she says in the recent media release,is to accelerate the R&D process for biological treatment solutions across the board, picking up where chemical and mechanical solutions have reached their maximum impact. With the support, expertise and backing from Ginkgo and our investors, I feel confident that Allonnia can drive transformational change within the water and waste management industries.

The company has secured $40m in Series A funding to get started in the waste treatment space. And among Allonnias early initiatives will be one to develop a biotech degradation solution to so-called forever chemicals like PFAS, PFOA, and PFOS.

Existing processes for treating forever chemicals require high energy consumption and chemical use, and still only sequester or landfill the contaminant rather than removing it from the environment entirely, explains the release.

And with advancing biotech, the right funding and support, and the knowledge of experts and professionals like Richards, Allonnia expects to change that. Richards most previously worked as Growth, Strategy and M&A Director for Water Solutions at DuPont. Before that, she spent more than a decade with Solvay.

B.R.A.I.N. Biotechnology Research and Information Network AG (ETR:BNN) Shares Could Be 20% Above Their Intrinsic Value Estimate – Simply Wall St

Today well do a simple run through of a valuation method used to estimate the attractiveness of B.R.A.I.N. Biotechnology Research and Information Network AG (ETR:BNN) as an investment opportunity by estimating the companys future cash flows and discounting them to their present value. We will take advantage of the Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) model for this purpose. Models like these may appear beyond the comprehension of a lay person, but theyre fairly easy to follow.

Remember though, that there are many ways to estimate a companys value, and a DCF is just one method. Anyone interested in learning a bit more about intrinsic value should have a read of the Simply Wall St analysis model.

See our latest analysis for B.R.A.I.N. Biotechnology Research and Information Network

We are going to use a two-stage DCF model, which, as the name states, takes into account two stages of growth. The first stage is generally a higher growth period which levels off heading towards the terminal value, captured in the second steady growth period. In the first stage we need to estimate the cash flows to the business over the next ten years. Where possible we use analyst estimates, but when these arent available we extrapolate the previous free cash flow (FCF) from the last estimate or reported value. We assume companies with shrinking free cash flow will slow their rate of shrinkage, and that companies with growing free cash flow will see their growth rate slow, over this period. We do this to reflect that growth tends to slow more in the early years than it does in later years.

A DCF is all about the idea that a dollar in the future is less valuable than a dollar today, so we need to discount the sum of these future cash flows to arrive at a present value estimate:

(Est = FCF growth rate estimated by Simply Wall St)Present Value of 10-year Cash Flow (PVCF) = 12m

The second stage is also known as Terminal Value, this is the businesss cash flow after the first stage. The Gordon Growth formula is used to calculate Terminal Value at a future annual growth rate equal to the 5-year average of the 10-year government bond yield of 0.2%. We discount the terminal cash flows to todays value at a cost of equity of 5.7%.

Terminal Value (TV)= FCF2030 (1 + g) (r g) = 11m (1 + 0.2%) (5.7% 0.2%) = 192m

Present Value of Terminal Value (PVTV)= TV / (1 + r)10= 192m ( 1 + 5.7%)10= 110m

The total value is the sum of cash flows for the next ten years plus the discounted terminal value, which results in the Total Equity Value, which in this case is 122m. To get the intrinsic value per share, we divide this by the total number of shares outstanding. Compared to the current share price of 7.4, the company appears slightly overvalued at the time of writing. The assumptions in any calculation have a big impact on the valuation, so it is better to view this as a rough estimate, not precise down to the last cent.

The calculation above is very dependent on two assumptions. The first is the discount rate and the other is the cash flows. You dont have to agree with these inputs, I recommend redoing the calculations yourself and playing with them. The DCF also does not consider the possible cyclicality of an industry, or a companys future capital requirements, so it does not give a full picture of a companys potential performance. Given that we are looking at B.R.A.I.N. Biotechnology Research and Information Network as potential shareholders, the cost of equity is used as the discount rate, rather than the cost of capital (or weighted average cost of capital, WACC) which accounts for debt. In this calculation weve used 5.7%, which is based on a levered beta of 0.919. Beta is a measure of a stocks volatility, compared to the market as a whole. We get our beta from the industry average beta of globally comparable companies, with an imposed limit between 0.8 and 2.0, which is a reasonable range for a stable business.

Whilst important, the DCF calculation ideally wont be the sole piece of analysis you scrutinize for a company. DCF models are not the be-all and end-all of investment valuation. Preferably youd apply different cases and assumptions and see how they would impact the companys valuation. For instance, if the terminal value growth rate is adjusted slightly, it can dramatically alter the overall result. Why is the intrinsic value lower than the current share price? For B.R.A.I.N. Biotechnology Research and Information Network, weve put together three essential aspects you should further examine:
