Star Wars: New Doctor Aphra Preview Claims "Eternal Life" Can Be Achieved Through Wearing Two Rings – Bounding Into Comics

A new preview for Marvel Comics upcoming Doctor Aphra #5 book claims there are two rings that worn together can grant an individual eternal life.

The newly launched Doctor Aphra series is written by Alyssa Wong, who accused Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski of being a racist before landing a job at the company. Shes joined by artist Marika Cresta.

The series takes place during the events of The Empire Strikes Back and specifically after the Battle of Hoth. After stealing a shipment of Rebel contraband from Imperial troopers on Hoth, Aphra is approached by a college student named Detta Yao about a pair of mythological artifacts called The Rings of Vaale.

Yao claims that the rings grant their wearer eternal life and boundless fortune when theyre worn together. However, she also notes that they are cursed. But Aphra isnt worried about the curse dismissing it as superstition created to prevent people from seeking the rings.

Aphra quickly accepts the deal to acquire the rings and heads to the Ruins of Kolkur in the Outer Rim to find Doctor Eustacia Okka, a supposed expert on the rings.

However, after tracking down Okka, Aphra discovers that another party is also interested in the rings, Ronen Tagge. And Tagge has an obsession of destroying rare artifacts after hes the last one to touch them.

He explains, the only thing that makes my blood sing more than owning something precious is being the last person to touch it.

After recruiting Okka, she leads Aphra and her team that includes Black Krrsantan, Yao, and a sniper named Just Lucky to the planet of Dianth in the Malitoris System. There they discover the Lost City of Vaale.

While exploring the city and attempting to find the location of the two rings, its revealed the two rings actually have their own titles, The Ring of Fortune and The Ring of Immortality.

While they would discover The Ring of Fortune, the Ring of Immortality was missing. It was not located in its case in the Inner Sanctum of the Architects Workshop in Vaale.

However, a game of double crossing occurs. One of Aphras party, Lucky, is revealed to be an agent of Tagge and comes away with The Ring of Fortune and promptly sets off to deliver it to his benefactor.

Lucky also leaves Aphra and her party to fend for themselves. While Aphra and Okka try to find a way out of the catacombs underneath the city they discover that the supposed curse Yao originally warned about is actually the city thats been built out of bone matter. And it could potentially drive them crazy.

However, while it appears its the city driving the individuals mad, Lucky is still hearing a sound emitting from The Ring of Fortune despite being away from the city.

While Lucky is taking the ring to Tagge, Aphra and her team eventually escape the catacombs and just as soon as they do, Tagges military forces destroy the entire city of Vaale as well as Aphras starship despite The Ring of Immortality missing.

Fortunately, for Aphra she discovers a High Republic starship that just so happened to be abandoned on the planet and in full working order. She decides to bait Tagge and gets her and the rest of her team captured.

Now, in this new preview from Star Wars, its revealed Tagge already had The Ring of Immortality and has been wearing it since the beginning of the series.

He even reveals that the ring has been in his familys possession for numerous generations after they acquired it from an infamous space pirate.

And once he found out that the ring was actually The Ring of Immortality, it made him want to not only obtain The Ring of Fortune, but also to destroy them and erase all knowledge of them from the galaxy.

However, in order to stop him from destroying the rings. Aphra claims that the stories and legends surrounding the rings that they actually do grant eternal life, incredible fortune, and limitless power are true.

Aphra even explains to demonstrate the rings abilities and power.

The preview ends there, but the implication is that these rings do indeed hold this power when worn together.

Now, given this is comics its quite possible there is a twist and the rings are indeed cursed and their supposed gift of eternal life could be something twisted like eternal life through zombification or being kept alive in stasis, unable to actually act.

If it is something like stasis, its actually been done before. The Sith Lord Exar Kun ritually sacrifices thousands of Massassi lives in order to shed the chains of his mortal body and run rampant throughout the cosmos.

However, the ritual doesnt actually allow him to gain immortality and shed his mortal flesh. Instead, his spirt is trapped in a temple on Yavin IV.

While its quite possible there will be a twist with the rings, if there isnt, and I wouldnt be surprised if the rings do grant eternal life, it would just be another slap in the face to Star Wars fans who appreciate the rise, the fall, and redemption of Anakin Skywalker.

Skywalker falls to the Dark Side after Darth Sidious tempts him with not only the keys to immortality, but the ability to keep others alive specifically his wife, Padme.

Well find out when the new issue of Doctor Aphra arrives on October 28th.

CD Projekt Red has recently released a statement informing fans that its ambitious open-world title Cyberpunk 2077 won't be releasing on November 19. The developers alsoexplainedthe exact reason behind the delay. According to the statement, the developers were facing issues shipping the various versions of the video game title involvingthecurrent-generation and next-generation gaming consoles, along with the Google Stadia and Windows PC versions. It further stated that the launch will require the team to prepare and test out a total of nine different versions of the video game which would be a major challenge at the moment. This involves testing the compatibility between the Xbox One/Series Xand Xbox Series S/Series X, PlayStation 4/Procompatibility on PS5, Windows PC and Stadia platforms while working from home.

This is the third time that developers have delayed the cyber-thriller, which was originally scheduled to release earlier this year in April. However, in an effort to improve the title and make a few changes, the date had to be shiftedto September17. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, thelaunch was finally moved toNovember 19.

Gamerswill get to play as V, a mercenary outlaw who is running wild in the city with a goal to secure a one-of-a-kind implant that will lead to his immortality. Players will also be able to experiment with all sorts of character customization in the game.

Great Expectations: A Tribute to Daniel Burgess – Long Island Tennis Magazine

How does anyone attempt, successfully, to pay homage to one of the most influential people in their life? Two books and five podcast seasons simply wouldnt do to express the impact. It would be a Sisyphean endeavor to attempt to write a summation of an individual whose life could be characterized as Shakespearean in its endurance, but here I am rolling the boulder up the hill.

This morning I woke up to discover that my mentor and friend had passed away. If you live long enough, you know what that feels like. The loss of someone you have so much love for is a debt that cannot be paid it stays with you forever. I felt compelled to talk to him one more time, to impress upon him what he had done for me, but now it is too late, so here I am writing what I would say. What we remember is never the details, but rather the impression were left with, like a beautiful piece of prestidigitation. This is not who Daniel Burgess was, but who he was to me.

Right after college, my family and I moved from Queens to Long Island. I had no idea what I was doing, lost like so many other 20-somethings. Without a car, I took a job that was close enough for me to walk to, associate at Blockbuster video I hated it. My passion for movies was dwarfed by the soul sucking, pride swallowing, daily grind of retail. On the best days Id only suffer a mild ennui that was painful enough. One fateful day, a customer of mine struck up a conversation about tennis with me; they were coming from playing. Freeport Tennis (the club which Daniel ran) is looking for people, you should apply. Within weeks, I was working the front desk, then I was working the pro shop, then I found myself on court. The circumstances that bring us to a tipping point in our life are always a surprise. One pro got sick, another moved back home to Jamaica, and another was a no-show what are the chances of that. Daniel came to me and said, I need you to teach today. I dont know how to teach, I replied. Daniel was asking, but he wasnt; this was mandate he had given me, the first of many. Youve seen it done a thousand times, I need you today. And so Daniel had given me a direction, a purpose, a career. I was awful at first, but Daniel made me better. Not only did he mentor me to make me a better instructor, he mentored me to be a better person. He gave me the most important thing a mentor can give someone, the desire to learn more. A great mentor/coach is someone that makes themselves progressively less needed. In tennis, youre by yourself on the court. Teaching someone how to improve, problem solve, to be curious and go beyond what is directly given to them by their coach is incalculable in value.

Because of Daniels mentorship, I went on to be a successful coach. I helped others, the way he helped me. One teenager came to me wanting to join his school team. We had 30 minutes for the next four weeks to make that happen. He was awful! When I asked why he wanted to join the team, he told me its because all of his friends were going to be on the team and he wanted to spend time with them after school. Stakes were high, this was important for him. Not only did he make the team, he was the captain the following year. One girl took lessons with me after having a horrible experience with two other coaches. She would cry on the court with the other pros and began to hate the sport. In very little time, she not only improved, but grew to love the sport in a way that surprised her parents. There are dozens of stories I could tell you of people reaching to me after I stopped coaching professionally to let me know that they loved their time with me, that I was the best instructor they ever had. But I was only the best for them because I learned from the best; thats who Daniel was, he was the best of us.

After I stopped teaching, I started a career in book publishing. Publishing is not an easy industry to get into. The old vanguard of publishing professionals fancy themselves gatekeepers of culture and the few positions that are available are given mostly to those who prove themselves worthy (and willing) to slave away for more hours than anyone should work for very little compensation. But, my mentor and friend Daniel is always a voice in the back of my mind reminding me once you walk through a door, you have a responsibility to help others walk through it as well. Because of Daniel, I serve on multiple diversity committees, sponsor young adults to attend publishing events, and mentor several people every year. With luck, and hard work, his philosophy will change my industry.

My story is not one that is unique, only unique to me. Daniel touched the lives of countless people like myself. His fingerprint is on the heart and soul of everyone that met him. And while all men, consciously or unconsciously, steer their boat toward immortality in this life, the storm of time takes us all. True immortality lies in leaving a legacy. For as long as people remember you and speak your name, you still live in this world. Daniel Burgess will live forever because I will embody his philosophy, I will teach his lessons, and I will speak his name.

Danny was one of the few people that got me active with the USTA again after raising my two children. He helped me to organize community festivals, and later on it led me to organize the Family Tennis League. The work has been very gratifying, and I hope to continue his legacy and share my love for tennis. I ran into Danny at the outdoor courts a few days before he passed. I could never have imagined that would be our last time together. As he was about to start teaching, he said, we need to do something about fixing all the cracks on these courts! An expert has warned why you should never pick mould off a piece of bread and still eat it.

The advice was revealed in new BBC show Morning Live, hosted by Kym Marsh and Gethin Jones, as they discussed Marcus Rashfords new campaign against child poverty in the UK.

Talk turned to how much food we waste in the UK, although bread is apparently one food we should never feel bad about binning.

While some people may pick off the mouldy parts of a piece of bread and eat the rest, there are plenty of reasons why you should not do this.

During the 45-minute episode, Ready Steady Cook chef Anna Haugh explained that in the UK we throw away 20 million slices of bread per day.

One thing you shouldnt do when your bread is on the turn is cut off any signs of mould and eat the rest, Anna explained.

After putting a piece of bread under a microscope, food scientist Dr Nazanin Zand explained that even if you pick off the mould, the bread is still not fit for consumption.

This is a piece of a roll of a bread, the expert explained. That has been separated from another roll that was contaminated.

As you look at it with the naked eye, mould isnt visible, but when you zoom in, you can see that mould has clearly grown and actually penetrated in the surface of the bread.

Anna added: It may not be visible, but the mould actually runs all the way through the loaf, and for some that could actually be a bigger deal than it sounds because bread mould contains micro-toxins which can affect the immune system.

Dr Zand went on to explain that while there are no real dangers of eating mouldy bread, the long-term effects can be dangerous.

I wouldnt say its dangerous and is going to cause any immortality, she added.

The point about exposure over a period of time is that micro-toxin has an accumulative effect.

Long term exposure and a high dose, can cause problems.

Stefan Collini Book Reviewing: On the ‘TLS’ LRB 5 November 2020 – London Review of Books

In July 1921, Alfred Harmsworth by then ennobled as Viscount Northcliffe, proprietor of the Daily Mail, the Times, and numerous other publications wrote in irritable mood to the managing director of the Times about the Lit Supp, as the Times Literary Supplement was known. He grumbled that its circulation has decreased a great deal, concluding that there is no reason why it should not be 80,000 a week (it was around 23,000 at the time) and that it should be made a little lighter. Seeing no improvement, Northcliffe proposed early in 1922 to fold the Lit Supp back into the Times. He wired the long-suffering managing director in best Scoop manner: Give great prominence to fact Times readers will as result merger receive lit supp free but outpoint Richmond many more popular books must be dealt with also. (Bruce Richmond had been the editor of the Lit Supp since shortly after its launch in 1902.) An announcement of the merger was set in type, to appear in the next, and final, issue of the Lit Supp, but the increasingly erratic Northcliffe changed his mind at the last minute (he was in poor mental as well as physical health and died a few months later). Tradition has it that the announcement was removed only twenty minutes before the issue went to press.

That may be as close to death as the TLS has ever come, but it has continued to have its ups and downs. Circulation rose through the 1920s to 30,000, then dropped sharply, down to 23,000 by 1934, and Richmond despaired of arresting the decline: Even among my own relations I know three households that have given it up. He did not believe, however, that new features (pictures, crosswords, a serial story, special numbers etc) would really have any permanent effect. His offer of resignation not having been accepted, he made a request that must be rare in the annals of journalism: In view of the condition to which I have brought the Supplement, I hope you will consider the question of a reduction of my salary for the coming year. Richmond remained in post, and presumably on full salary, till the end of 1937. His successor, D.L. Murray, predictably tried a spot of new-broomism changing the layout and coverage to make the paper lighter and more popular and found, just as predictably, that this was not a recipe for success: circulation continued to fall, dipping below 20,000 by the outbreak of war, and falling to 17,000 two years later. But what goes down can come back up. Circulation rose sharply in the reading-hungry postwar years, reaching a peak of 49,000 in 1950 under the editorship of Alan Pryce-Jones, and stayed above 40,000 until the beginning of the 1970s.

Since the sale of the Times to Rupert Murdoch in 1981, the TLS has once again been a minor part of a sprawling media empire, a province granted a partial autonomy that is hedged round with Solomon Binding guarantees. But it was never one of the more prosperous provinces: in the 1980s it lost money every year and by 1990 circulation was down to 26,000 copies. When Ferdinand Mount was appointed editor in 1990 he diplomatically announced that, while contemplating some changes, he did not want to tamper with the bedrock virtues of the paper the comprehensive coverage, the adventurousness, the readiness to cover any book, no matter how obscure or difficult. Mounts judicious blend of conservatism and innovation, together with his reported willingness to give his specialist editors their head, made his 12-year reign one of the more impressive phases of the papers history. By the beginning of this century, circulation was back up to over 35,000 again.

The biggest shake-up came in 2016 when the 36-year-old Stig Abell, previously managing editor of the Sun, was to general surprise appointed editor. He proceeded to engage in a more vigorous spate of new-broomism than any of his predecessors had ever attempted. The most immediately obvious changes were to the appearance and format, with less print on the page and many more photos (and a TLS cartoonist). But his changes to the contents went deeper and were seen by some observers as threatening the identity of the paper. Critics of the TLS have always complained that it is unexciting, but excitement can come in many forms, and anyway there are some things more important than excitement. A certain staidness had been the obverse of its enduring merits: the TLS carried a lot of considered, well-written reviews of a wide range of books by people who knew what they were talking about. Following Abells make-over, it still had some of those, but in the past few years they have been increasingly squeezed by free-standing pieces, frequently confessional or narrative in form, as well as by a variety of features addressed to topical issues in fact changes of the kind Richmond was sceptical about nearly a century ago. By the beginning of this year circulation, having briefly risen in response to a concerted marketing campaign, had fallen back to around 32,000.

Having left his very visible mark, Abell moved on (to a senior role at the new Times Radio) in June this year, and Martin Ivens, former editor of the Sunday Times, was installed in his place. But it would appear that the paper is suffering from long-term health problems. Alan Jenkins, the widely respected deputy editor, left a few months ago, and now other long-serving staff are being made redundant, amid rumours of unsustainable losses. Such developments will inevitably occasion sermons lamenting (according to taste), the decline of the reading public, the end of book reviewing, the now unbridgeable gulf between academia and lay literary culture, and so on. These sermons have all been preached before, when some storm cloud or other looked particularly ominous. In 1938, for instance, noting how many literary journals had recently closed and fearing for the future of the Lit Supp, John Middleton Murry, a frequent contributor, declared the decline in the amount and quality of reviewing has been catastrophic since 1914, adding that book reviewing is a vanished profession. That obituary turned out to be premature, as have been its many successors, but, as Mark Twain discovered, having your death announced prematurely is no guarantee of immortality.

At such moments its good to be reminded of some of the more illustrious passages in the papers long history. In 1905, Richmond invited the 23-year-old Miss A.V. Stephen to review for it. She quickly revealed herself to be the kind of young contributor editors dream of unearthing. She readily took on whatever she was asked to do, writing fifty pieces in the next three years, and her disconcertingly intelligent, quirkily stylish reviews were delivered to length and on time. Since reviews were published anonymously in the Lit Supp at that time (and indeed until 1974), Stephens industry did not help to build a wide reputation for her, but when, after her marriage in 1912, she began to publish novels under her married name, it soon became known that Virginia Woolf was one of the papers most valued contributors. Under its own imprint, the TLS recently gathered together 14 of her contributions in the volume Genius and Ink. An episode not mentioned there (it is documented in Hermione Lees biography of Woolf) points to the tensions with which the paper has always struggled in one form or another. Richmond felt obliged to return the third piece Woolf submitted, apologising for having commissioned it and insisting that the subject (a book about Catherine de Medici) required a more scholarly treatment.

Like most of us, perhaps, Woolf preferred reviewing to being reviewed, and although notices of her books in the Lit Supp were generally favourable, there is an undertow of grumpiness in her private responses As for the Common Reader, the Lit Supp had close on two columns sober & sensible praise neither one thing nor the other my fate in the Times. Since many of the essays reprinted in that volume had first appeared in the pages of the Lit Supp, professional decorum may have required a little restraint by the reviewer. Woolf continued to contribute essays well into the 1930s, even coming to be paid, so Derwent Mays centenary history of the TLS reveals, at a uniquely preferential rate.

But the issue raised by her review of the book on Catherine de Medici didnt go away, and in fact became more acute and more agonised over as the century wore on. The paper was in principle committed to reviewing the most important new works of scholarship alongside a selection of that months novels, biographies, popular histories and so on. But were these two worlds pulling further and further apart as recondite specialism increasingly dominated the first and relentless pursuit of best-sellerdom more and more shaped the second? The continued existence of the TLS has itself been a standing refusal of this defeatist analysis, though this has meant treading a fine line. The great majority of books from both these worlds, in so far as they really are two worlds, do not get reviewed in its pages; careful selection of both books and reviewers helps maintain the necessary fiction of a shared culture. The guiding principle was wryly expressed by John Sturrock, who worked there for more than thirty years, when he remarked that an ideal contribution should probably strike academic readers as journalistic and journalistic readers as academic.

Different readers want different things, and some tastes do, eventually, change. But it does not seem likely that the TLS could ever succeed as some mix between a glossy lit magazine and an experimental little review for new writing. In fact, it is hard to imagine any version of itself succeeding in the future which does not continue the attempt to straddle the worlds of academic scholarship and commercial publishing. Like it or not, many (though very far from all) of its readers are going to be academics, and a lot (perhaps practically all) of its readers, academic or otherwise, will want serious, informed reviewing of a wide range of books. Intellectual quality, literary judgment and cultural curiosity have to be its hallmarks, not liveliness or accessibility or topicality or any of the other buzzwords that make the pulses of advertising managers race. Whether that can be sustained these days without losing money is hard to say, and what kind of ownership structure might best protect it is similarly moot. The Lit Supp survived Northcliffe and his moods, just, and the TLS may yet survive Murdoch and his accountants. Of course, the world will not end if the paper is forced to close or to change its character radically, but something will end, something that many people have grown used to thinking of as rather valuable.

The Hunter Biden Files: Vicious Politics And Tragedies Of The Privileged Class – The Pavlovic Today

Enter Hunter Biden. Handsome, rich, Ivy League-educated, the nonchalant but troubled protagonist, the likes of Hank Moody of Californication. Picture all that but in a political thriller detailing an international web of business dealings, a James Dean of the political Americana, riding into the sunset with a sultry blond on his arm in a Porsche Panamera. This could all be make-believe, but it can be true, too, a harsh and painful saga of personal stories where the father is just ambitious enough to know it and still decides to run for President of the United States in the autumn of his life.

The latest of Hunter Bidens audiotapes flying around social media is overwhelming. I feel sorry for the guy, whos in way over his head with what appears to be a very messy setup. In a recording, he complains about his father, Joe, a consistent case-in-point in all so-far released materials since the NY Post broke the story that Twitter and Facebook censored. Painful, raw, and personal materials, difficult to process emotionally, are included. If the audio is authentic, it must be devastating for Hunter to have his conversations released in front of the global audience, and if those were not true, then its sad and depressing that anyones child should be a victim of the parents pursuit of power.

Joe Biden did not have to run for President. He was poorly performing in the primaries, he was three years from a half-century-long career in politics, and he could have disappeared quietly into the night; but he wanted to have the cake and eat it, too, it appears.

Marvel and DC have always had a joint monopoly on live-action superhero productions, but once in a while, good movies and TV shows that aren't associated with the two brands come out. Netflix hit movie The Old Guard,whichis based on a comic series of the same namebelongs to that category.

Despite the fact that comic creatorGreg Rucka wrote the movie's screenplay, there are a couple of differences between the story on paper and the story on screen. Not surprising given that the screenplay is said to have been rewritten three times.Here's what's the same, and what's different between source material and film

In both the film and the comics,former CIA operative Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) pretends to be a friend to Andy and her team at first but it is laterrevealed that he isworking for the villain Merrick. Soon, he realizes the error of his ways and decides to betray Merrick.

The immortals spare him in both the comics and the film. His reason for cutting ties with Merrick are similar too, He isn't cut out for the blatant greed and cruelty that Merrick embodies. Though the film adds a smaller detail by making Copley choose tohonor his wife's memory by doing more good than bad.

In the movie,Quynhgets placed in what appears to be an Iron Maiden device and tossed to the bottom of the sea. She remains trapped there for about 500 years. At the end of the film, she is seen again, suggesting that she has resurrected.

In the comics, her death is caused by a storm. She isn't deliberately drowned. According to screenwriterGreg Rucka, the change was made to save money. Apparently, the storm scene from the comics would have cost too much.

In the movie,U.S. Marine Nile Freeman gets targeted by an enemy soldier in Afghanistan who slits her throat. As expected, she recovers seconds later. When she wakes up, she has a strange dream that makes the other immortals aware she exists.

Andy then tracks her down to grab her justbefore the military can take her to Germanyto perform tests on her. This is exactly the same way that the immortals find out about Nile in the comics too. She has a dream, forcing Andy to swoop in and take her just in time.

Despite Andy being immortal at the beginning of the film, she lost her immortality somewhere between, leading to an intense third act where she had to fight hard to keep herself alive. At some point during a gun battle, theother immortals had to use their bodies to prevent Andy from getting hit as they also fired at the enemy.

The vulnerability helped Andy understand humanity better.This could be best seen when a stranger helped her patch up a stab wound. However, in all the installments of the comics, there wasn't a single time when Andy lost her immortality.

They obviously appear better on screen thanks to the choreography but most of the fight scenes happen exactly as they do in the comics. This includes the memorable one between Andy and Nile in the plane. Apparently, 3000 takes were needed for that specific scene.

The same baddies that get killed in battle in the comics are the same ones that get killed in the movie. The comics actually allocate plenty of illustrations to the action scenes, making them look as realistic as possible.

The film's best relationship is that of the LGBTQ couple, Joe and Nicky. When Joe gets taunted and asked whether Nicky truly is his boyfriend, Joe gives a classic response by saying that "boyfriend" is not a good enough way to describe Nicky. As beautiful as the moment is, it is even better in the comics.

In the comics, Joe describes Nicky in a poetic manner, saying things like"his very thoughts make music of the mundane." If viewers want to relish the experience of that scene a bit more, they should probably check out the comics.

InThe Old Guard's third act, it is revealed through Copley's discovery, thatwhenever the group uses their powers to do good, there is a larger ripple effect in the rest of the world. For example, there's a new major medical discovery or the disappearance of a natural disaster that had been predicted to occur.

This revelation happens in the comics too, only that it's in the second volume, not the first volume that the film is based on. Given that there were a number of rewrites to the screenplay, the decision to bring the revelation forward was probably made in the last stages.

Veronica Ngo's character Quynh was a memorable but she isn't exactly as she was in the comics. First, her nationality was changed from Japanese to Vietnamese. Second, her name in the comics was actually Noriko (a Japanese name).

The changes were actually requested by Ngo, Since she is Vietnamese, she asked Rucka if the character's name and nationality could be switched to suit her Vietnamese heritage. Rucka wasn't sure about that, so he asked the director. Luckily, she agreed to the switch because it wouldn't affect the plot in any major way.

When Booker and Andy meet Copley in the later stages of the move, Booker betrays her and wounds her. He later regrets it because he thought she would heal quickly but she just so happens to have lost her immortality.

Booker is punished for his betrayal by being banished from the group for 100 years. Thegroup then meets Copley who informs them of the ripple effect. This plays out similarly in the comics though it also happens a bit later.

Steve Merrick was more of a corporate villain in the movie. He's a pharma billionaire who is keen on capturing Andy and her team so that he can conduct experiments on their bodies. He just so happens to have an army of goons to which he relies on to defend him,

In the comics, Merrick is a proper good too. He is buff and tattooed up. He is a skilled fighter who constantly intimidates his henchmen by doing push-ups during meetings. And when he first meets Joe and Nicky, he even stabs them for fun just to see if they'll die.

Death, Money, and the Dueling Frauds: Trump and Biden – Dissident Voice

When the New York Times and CNN recently referred to the staged town hall spectacles of Biden and Trump as dueling events, they inadvertently revealed the truth that U.S. presidential elections are Americas favorite movie and that the corporate media is in the entertainment business.

While it is ludicrous to imagine these tottering actors crossing swords in tights, their skirmishes in suits and ties are good for a few laughs, if you have the stomach to watch them. Only people who still believe in professional wrestling would think these clowns dont work for the same bosses the Umbrella People, aka the power elites, the national security state, etc., who own the country and choose their stooges to represent their interests in the White House.

I much prefer Mel Brooks, a genuinely funny guy.

The columnist Russell Baker once said the purpose of such political entertainment is to provide a manageably small cast for a national sitcom, or soap opera, or docudrama, making it easy for media people to persuade themselves they are covering the news while mostly just entertaining us.

As for debates and town hall farces in television prime time, the witty Baker said that the charm of television entertainment is its ability to bridge the chasm between dinner and bedtime without mental distraction.

Now lets proceed to the dark side, where the sardonic screams of laughter dissolve into tears.

For such entertainment serves a devious distracting purpose: to conceal the nature of social evil and the driving forces behind American politics today. It is not particularly complicated unless the syllogism All cats die/Socrates is dead/ therefore Socrates is a cat rings true.

Then its an impossible conundrum.

We are not cats or Socrates, as far as I know. But like them, we will also die. Everyone knows this, but the thought of death is not particularly have-a-nice-dayish, so people deny it as much as possible in a host of ways. Most people prefer life over death, and when death does approach and can no longer be denied, most hope for immortality in some way, shape, or form.

Yes, there are those who assert this isnt true for them, and there is no reason to doubt their sincerity. There are philosophical arguments to support their position, such as that of the Roman poet Lucretius in his famous poem De rerum natura (On the Nature of Things). But I would maintain with the great psychoanalyst Rollo May that all such naturalistic efforts, including Lucretiuss, to explain away human anxiety rooted in death, founder on the human emotions of pity, grief, love, and loneliness. Rational explanations take us only so far. In their efforts to deny the human condition and dismiss the spiritual dimension, the irrational, and the daimonic, they open the door to madness, as is happening today with the push by the worlds economic elite to convince people that they are machines and that their machine dreams will conquer death.

For those who love life, it seems axiomatic to me that some form of perpetuation and redemption of an individuals life in the face and fear of death is widely desired. This can take many forms: a literal afterlife, fame, heirs, monuments, money, children, etc. History is quite clear that people have always sought some way of transcending their physical fates.

This was aptly noted by Graham Greene, the English novelist, when, as an old man approaching death, he was asked if he was disappointed at not receiving the Nobel Prize, and he said no, since he was hoping for a greater prize.

In his important book, The Denial of Death (Pulitzer Prize 1974 for general non-fiction), the cultural anthropologist Ernest Becker, puts it succinctly:

Man is literally split in two: he has an awareness of his own splendid uniqueness in that he sticks out of nature with a towering majesty, and yet goes back into the ground a few feet in order blindly and dumbly to rot and disappear forever.

Faced with such an impossible situation, then, overwhelmed from childhood with a sense of ones own ultimate physical powerlessness but being symbolic creatures as well as physical ones, the normal person learns to repress the terror of death by building various defenses that allow one to believe that he ultimately controls his death. Ones natural impotence is then hidden within the vital lie of character; one lives within the manageable social world that helps one blot out existential awareness by offering various social games and cultural symbols, agreed forms of madness that narcotize the fear. One learns to adjust. The aim is to cut life down to manageable proportions, domesticate terror, and trust in the cultural and social authorities for protection and reassurance. Obedience is key.

Listen to Big Daddy and he will rescue you , especially when he first tells you that Mr. Pumpkin Head is coming to get you unless you run into his protective embrace.

These days, its Halloween all year round in the land of the free and the home of the brave where the fear of death is handed out like poisoned candy and Big Daddy waits at the door disguised as everyones benevolent grandfather. To be treated, you must be masked. That is his trick. Stay well, he mutters, after he drops a dollop of sweet fear into your bag and cackles behind his face.

Everywhere you look these days, people are doubly masked. The paper kind and by definition, since the the word person, being derived from the Latin, persona, means mask, while there is another Latin word, larva, that also means mask or ghost or evil spirit. Clearly there is a dance contest underway, a danse macabre. And who will win nobody knows.

Every conflict over truth, wrote the psychoanalyst Otto Rank, is in the last analysis just the same old struggle over immortality.

This is exactly what is going on now with the fierce disagreements over Covid-19.

Like the attacks of September 11, 2001, the anthrax attacks, the ginning up of terrorism fear with Homeland Securitys color-coded warning system, the lies about weapons of mass-destruction, and the coronavirus early warning systems, people have adopted positions upon which they stake their psychological lives. To admit you were snookered is a little death that is hard to swallow.

We are being subjected to mind-control on a vast scale, the continual pumping up of the fear of death to control the population. Americans have been living in an atmosphere of dread for almost twenty years. Its so old and so obvious but cuts so deep it works like a charm. You dont want to die, do you, so come here into Big Daddys arms.

In Nineteen Eighty-Four, George Orwell writes that The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. It is a famous quote that is not true when taken out of context. The Umbrella People and their lackeys dont seek power entirely for its own sake. They have a larger agenda: immortality.

If one reads Orwell carefully, one comes upon a key passage that clarifies the previous quote. The evil OBrien, the torturer and member of the Inner Party who poses as a member of the resistance to Big Brother (sound familiar?), asks his victim Winston Smith to reverse the slogan from Freedom is Slavery to Slavery is Freedom:

Alone free the human being is always defeated. It must be so, because every human being is destined to die, which is the greatest of all failures. But if he can make complete, utter submission, if he can escape from his identity, if he can merge himself in the Party so that he is the Party, then he will be all-powerful and immortal. The second thing for you to realize is that power is power over human beings. Over the body but, above all, over the mind. Power over matter external reality as you would call it is not important. Already our control over matter is absolute.

All power is fundamentally power to deny mortality. This is true whether it is the power of the state or church. And it is always sacred power.

Many often ask why do the super-rich and powerful always want more. Its simple. They wish to transcend their pre-existing human mortality and become gods immortals. They stupidly believe that if they can lord it over others, kill, dominate, achieve status, become billionaires, presidents, magnates, celebrities, etc., they will somehow live in some weird forever.

In a process that has spanned at least a hundred and fifty years or so, our traditional cultural/religious symbol systems have been radically undermined, most momentously by the Faustian creation of Lord Nuke. All forms of symbolic immortality (theological, biological, creative, natural, and experiential) that formerly provided a sense of continuity have been severely threatened. This is the haunting specter lurking in the background of life today.

What is death? How to defeat or transcend it? How to affirm life in the face of death?

One paradoxical way that political leaders do this is by killing. Followers who accede to such killing join their leaders, not simply to see others dead, but to acquire power over death itself to kill their own deaths. It is perverse, of course, and is summed up in the saying to love the bomb joyously, to experience the nightmare of oblivion as ecstasy. Isnt this what the philosophy of voting for the lesser of two evil is about? At least he will be our killer. Our evil killer, but not as bad as yours. You lose.

I have read that there is a painting still visible at the entrance to a house in ruined Pompeii that tells us much about power and wealth. It perfectly symbolizes the meaning of the economic gap between the super-rich e.g. those behind the World Economic Forum, the CIA, the presidential candidates, the corporate media and the rest of us. It pictures a man weighing his penis on a scale of gold coins. Gold, God, wealth, and power. Its an old story.

Today, however, there is a difference, for the spirit of nihilism has grown as belief in the spiritual dimension and God has diminished dramatically. Money or gold, wealth in all its forms, is todays foremost immortality symbol, a sign that one is powerful and can conquer death. What else are Trumps gold-emblazoned Tower and hair, and Bidens boastfully admitted threat to withhold one billion dollars from Ukraine unless they fire the prosecutor investigating his son, Hunter. The greasing of palms, bribery, tax theft, etc. par for the course in a corrupt society run by thieves and criminals.

Becker says of this wealth obsession:

The only hint we get of the cultural repression seeping through is that even dedicated financiers wash their hands after handling money. The victory over death is a fantasy that cannot be fully believed in; money doesnt entirely banish feces [decay and death that is of course defeated with toilet paper as Covid-19 has proven], and so the threat of germs and vulnerability in the very process of securing immortality.

Pseudo immortality.

Enter Covid-19. Like the attacks of September 11, 2001, it is death writ large. An insidious terrorist threat. Invisible, sneaky, ready to pounce. Fear and trembling. So-called surprise attacks that were preceded by simulations and live drills. Numerous parallels, too many to mention. Lets not. Have a nice day! Stay safe!

So what do the super-rich controllers want now? What are the World Economic Forums Claus Schwab, Google and the Defense Departments Eric Schmidt, Bill Gates, Ray Kurzweil of Google and The Singularity, et al. pushing now that Covid-19 has so many cowering in fear?

These people have realized that the thing that their money and power must do is to create a world where trans-humanism must triumph and people of flesh and blood must be induced and forced to become the machines they have been told they are. If you doubt this is underway, research the World Economic Forums agenda, see what the Great Reset is about, the Build Back Better slogans, the massive push to create on-line existence for everyone, etc. As a recent ad I saw says: The world is going digital.

The goal of these mad technocratic elites is to create a fabricated reality where the visible world becomes nearly meaningless once the screen world becomes peoples window on the world. An electronic nothingness to replace reality as people in the industrialized countries gleefully embrace digital wraparound apparitions and the poor and vulnerable of this world suffer and die out of sight and out of mind. It is the fundamental seismic shift of our era and perhaps the greatest propaganda operation ever undertaken. A sort of end-times desperate gambit.

And it just so happens to revolve around the use of death fear to accomplish its goals.

But for the elites, there will be no death. For having realized that their stolen wealth and power can only take them so far, and they too will become food for worms, they have commandeered science and medicine to undertake their immortality projects. If medicine fails to find for them the secret of immortality, then computer science and Artificial Intelligence will, and they will be uploaded into computers and live forever in their beloved cyberspace. Digital immortality is not a joke for these people see Kurzweils (the director of engineering at Google) The Singularity, etc. for they are actually insane but hold key positions throughout the computer and biotechnology industries. Check where the super rich invest their money to confirm this. None of it is secret.

Having heeded Russell Bakers words about television offering no mental distraction between dinner and bedtime, I took to my crib early, knowing Tweedledee and Tweedledum would be dueling again, this time in what they humorously called a debate. I was surrounded by my stuffed animals that protected me and I slept safe and sound.

Upon awakening, I read that the gladiators had exchanged blows but that both were left standing for the big showdown on November 3. I also noticed that each had used the words dark winter in reference to Covid-19. Biden said one was coming and Trump said he didnt know.

Neither, of course, spoke of the Dark Winter Exercise, a senior level war game conducted on June 22-23, 2001, about a biological attack, a smallpox outbreak, the public health response, the lack of vaccines, the need for quarantine and isolation, the restriction of civil liberties, and the role of the Defense Department and the military in the response. Nor did they speak of anthrax attacks, but the Canadian researcher, Graeme MacQueen, will here fill you in on both, in case you dont know. Maybe the boys just forgot.

Chemistry in the Time of COVID-19 – Wittenberg University

When the coronavirus pandemic forced Wittenberg University to abruptly switch to online classes last spring, Professor and Chair of Chemistry Justin Houseknecht seized the opportunity to investigate how the transition to remote instruction would impact learning in an organic chemistry class. With the help of biochemistry and molecular biology major Lucy Bates, class of 2022, the pair co-authored a manuscript presenting the results. The study was recently published online in a special issue of the Journal of Chemical Education.

A proponent of active, hands-on learning, Houseknecht regularly collects data on the effectiveness of the Just-in-Time Teaching (JiTT) and collaborative learning methods he uses in his organic chemistry classes. He often engages students in the research process; Bates was scheduled to spend the summer in-person helping Houseknecht analyze data related to metacognitive and self-efficacy skills.

However, the pivot from in-person teaching to remote instruction presented an opportunity to add a unique component to Bates summer research project: to study if student learning and behavior changed during the spring semester.

The first part of this project was the transition to remote learning and assessment where student scores in Organic II were compared before and after the switch to learning completely online during quarantine, said Bates, who received funding from the chemistry departments Virginia Ellis Franta Fund to support her summer research. There was no significant difference in students' ability to master course material even with a different mode of learning and assessment.

Wittenberg students are fantastic, said Houseknecht, referencing the results. They roll with the punches.

Houseknecht and Bates co-authored article, Transition to Remote Instruction Using Hybrid Just-in-Time Teaching, Collaborative Learning, and Specifications Grading for Organic Chemistry 2, was published as part of the Special Issue: Insights Gained While Teaching Chemistry in the Time of COVID-19.

This research is useful for chemical education and the large potential for online learning during a world pandemic, said Bates, who hails from Brownsburg, Indiana.

Bates also spent part of the summer analyzing data collected from Organic Chemistry I.

We looked at the potential growth in metacognitive and self-efficacy skills by using the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire at the beginning and end of the semester, she said. We concluded that to find significant growth, we would need more data and a larger sample population. Further research could be done.

Bates learned some valuable skills during her summer of research, including a new programming language for statistical computing.

I learned how to code using RStudio, do computational work, write professional and publishable papers, and I learned how to work efficiently by myself on a large research project.

Houseknecht offered high praise of Bates work ethic, particularly her ability to learn RStudio on her own when training courses werent available because of COVID-19.

She is an incredibly motivated, enthusiastic student, very detail-focused, he said. She sees a goal and goes after it. She took a lot of initiative to figure out how to do the work. She definitely earned her authorship.

Wittenberg has helped me prepare for my future by giving me research opportunities and professors that care about the success of all students, said Bates, who serves as treasurer of the Marine Science Club and is a member of the fishing club and Outdoors Club. She hopes to pursue a masters in molecular biology after graduating from Wittenberg.

Improving executive diversity is a priority | Opinion – Chemistry World

Diversity. Its a simple concept people from different cultures and with different life experiences bring different viewpoints to problems. Drawing on a broader range of viewpoints should allow teams to identify and solve problems in ways that benefit everyone, not just the comfortable majority.

But our industries and organisations do not (yet) represent that diversity very well. Women and members of under-represented populations are overwhelmingly concentrated in lower-paid, lower-prestige roles, and often all but absent from boardrooms and leadership teams.

While this is changing, progress is slow. Partly that slow progress can be attributed to deeply ingrained systemic inequalities. There can be no doubt that these exist, even if they are invisible to those whose privilege of birth has meant they have never encountered them. Breaking down those barriers requires uncomfortable cultural changes, and a level of sustained effort that is often emotionally and professionally exhausting to those who take up the struggle. It shouldnt have to be this way.

There is, of course, a logistical element companies with tens of thousands of employees cannot radically change their demographic makeup overnight. But at the leadership level, the numbers are much smaller boards and executive teams might be 1015 people, even at large firms. Press releases can make grand-sounding claims about increasing board representation of various groups, but when that corresponds to hiring just one or two people, it sounds significantly less impressive.

It is all too easy for executive recruiters to claim that suitable candidates from diverse groups dont exist, or are too difficult to find. They absolutely do exist, albeit in small numbers. And the benefits of their perspective surely outweighs the extra effort in finding them. Without the same opportunities for training and advancement, the leaks in the pipeline will never be plugged, and the flow of diverse candidates will remain a trickle, overwhelmed by those who look and sound the same as were used to.

If inclusion and diversity is really as important as all the strategy documents claim, then it is the responsibility of every company to examine its structures and actively break down those barriers and stereotypes. While ensuring under-represented groups have opportunities to advance throughout the company is important, providing mentorship and training to help prepare promising candidates for leadership positions is crucial (and, thankfully, increasingly recognised across the industry).

But the final problem is a little more insidious. History tells us that promises are easy to make, and just as easy to break when there are no repercussions. Grand strategies are all very well, but when they dont translate into action and results, they are more part of the problem than the solution. Its up to all of us not to continue to allow that to happen.

Noted chemist to focus on renewable energy research, education as new RASEI head – CU Boulder Today

Noted organic chemist Seth Marder has been named the new director of the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute (RASEI), one of several affiliated with CU Boulder, effective July 2021.

RASEI (pronounced RAY-see) is a joint institute between CU Boulder and the U.S. Department of Energys National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). NREL works to transform energy by advancing renewable energy science, engineering and analysis through research, education and industry partnerships.

Former RASEI Director Robert McGrath retired. At present, Carrie Eckert and Gregor Henze are serving as interim co-directors.

We are excited that Seth has agreed to take on this new challenge, said Terri Fiez, vice chancellor for Research and Innovation at CU Boulder. He brings unique expertise that will help us create a vital bridge between the sciences and engineering on our campus, and between CU Boulder and NREL on the partnership side.

Marder will have joint appointments in chemical and biological engineering within the College of Engineering and Applied Science and in chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences. He will also be named a RASEI fellow and have a joint appointment at NREL.

Marder is presently the Georgia Power Chair of Energy Efficiency and Regents Professor in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry and a professor of materials science and engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He also directs Georgia Techs Center for the Science and Technology of Advanced Materials and Interfaces.

NREL is proud to welcome Seth to RASEI and we look forward toeven deeper collaborative interactions leading to continued, and highly impactful, solutions for our energy future, said Peter Green, deputy laboratory director for science and technology at NREL. Research partnerships like this one with CU-Boulder on RASEI are critical to the development and deployment of new energy technologies at speed and scale, and Sethsuniqueexperience and expertise enhancesour capability to accomplish our mission.

He received his BA in chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After completing his postdoctoral work at the University of Oxford, he moved to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at California Institute of Technology.

Marder has served on numerous advisory boards for journals and is the founding chair of the editorial board for the Royal Society of Chemistry materials journal Materials Horizons.

He is a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, the American Physical Society, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Materials Research Society, the Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE), the Optical Society of America and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is also a member of the World Cultural Council.

At a time when calls for racial equality and inclusion from the Black Lives Matter movement in the US are reverberating worldwide, major pharmaceutical companies are stepping up efforts to increase the diversity of their workforce, supply chains, executive leadership and boards of directors.

In August, for example, US firm Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) committed to investing $300 million (229 million) in efforts to address health disparities experienced by minority populations, increase the companys clinical trial diversity, boost its support of diverse suppliers, and continue to increase African American and Latinx representation at all levels of the company.

By 2022, BMS aims to achieve gender parity at the executive level globally. It will also double executive representation of Black and African American, as well as Hispanic and Latinx employees in the US. More broadly, the company has pledged to spend $1 billion globally with Black- and other diverse-owned suppliers by 2025.

BMS will release updated demographic information on its workforce and leadership early 2021. In the interim, its most recent data from July 2018 shows that just over 50% of its overall workforce are women, but only about 38% of executives. And while around 29% of its overall workforce come from minority populations, such groups represent just under 20% at the executive level.

To reach its diversity goals, BMS is adapting its recruitment process, among other things. The company will require diverse interview panels for all executive roles in the US, and will work with women- and minority-owned recruitment firms that specialise in diverse executive talent. BMS says that it is aggressively managing succession plans, and implementing mentoring, sponsorship and development programmes to increase the diversity and readiness of employees seeking executive positions.

Similarly, US-based Merck & Co recently committed an additional $10 million to address disparities highlighted as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. In addition, Merck reports spending more than $2 billion with diverse suppliers in 2019, defined as those inclusive of women, disabled people and military veterans.

The company, which says it works with 15,000 such diverse suppliers globally, is also a member of the Billion Dollar Roundtable, a group that recognises firms that spend at least $1 billion annually with minority- and women-owned suppliers.

Currently, three of Mercks 10 executive leaders are African American, including chief executive Kenneth Frazier the first African American man to lead a major pharmaceutical company. A further two of the companys 12 board members (excluding Frazier) are African American (16%), and six are women. Mercks latest data from 20192020 indicate that 25% of its board, 26% of its executives and 29% of its overall workforce come from underrepresented ethnic groups, while 49% of its overall workforce and 50% of new hires were women.

Different companies are at different stages in their efforts to embrace diversity. A survey by the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) which represents biotechnology firms, research universities, state biotechnology centres and related associations confirms that diversity is lacking at the top management levels within its sector.

On average, 45% of all US employees at responding companies are women, but only 30% of the executive-level workforce, 18% of board members and 16% of chief executives. In addition, 20% of responding organisations had no women at executive level, and 32% had none on the board.

The situation appears even grimmer when it comes to minority populations representation. On average, 32% of all employees at responding companies are people of colour including Black, Latinx, Asian and Native American. However, they comprise only 15% of executive teams, 14% of board members and 12% of chief executives. 56% of responding organisations had no people of colour at executive level, and 64% had none on their boards.

But while the biopharma industry is increasingly welcoming diversity, US president Donald Trumps administration is moving in the other direction. In September, Trump issued an executive order prohibiting federal contractors and grantees from teaching what it calls divisive concepts like white privilege, unconscious bias, and systemic racism in their diversity and inclusion training efforts.

Stephen Ubl, president of the trade body Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) criticised the presidential directive, arguing that diversity is essential to a robust innovation ecosystem that generates new medicines. In August, PhRMA had issued an open letter on equity, declaring that Systemic racism is as real as any disease. Our industry is not immune, and calling on its members to actively stand up to racism and injustice.

Nevertheless, as it stands, the White House has effectively halted all diversity training efforts at federal agencies while it reviews their programmes and works to implement the new policy.

The issue will likely be a moot point should Trump lose his bid for re-election to Democratic rival Joe Biden on 3 November. If elected, Biden would be expected to rescind the executive order, given he has criticised Trump for attacking diversity training and emphasised that racial insensitivity is a real problem that needs to be addressed in all workplaces.

The chemicals industry is likewise moving to become more diverse. For example, DuPont spinoff Chemours launched a diversity action plan in June that includes expanded employee training and education on eliminating bias and driving diversity.

We are holding ourselves accountable to advancing inclusion and diversity, and are measuring our progress against the goals laid out in our corporate responsibility commitments, which include [getting to] 50% women in our global workforce, says corporate communications leader Alvenia Scarborough.

Women currently make up 22% of Chemours global workforce, Scarborough tells Chemistry World. She describes this figure as solid for the chemicals industry, and says the company is making good progress but still has a way to go. Chemours goal for ethnic minority representation among its US workforce is 20%, and Scarborough notes that the current figure isvery close at 19%.

Why Google, BASF and Sephora are coming together on safer chemistry – GreenBiz

It's probably fair to say that nobody expressly set out to devise a sunscreen to bleach coral reefs or a yoga mat to emit carcinogens. Yet toxic substances circulate in waterways and bloodstreams, leached out from all the consumables of everyday life.

Shortsightedness and paltry data in the cycles of product design and engineering are partly to blame for this collateral damage of modern chemistry. Most product designers are unlettered in chemistry, and the practice of green chemistry remains in its early years. Even a basic count of all the industrial chemicals in use is scarce somewhere over 80,000, according to the U.S. Toxic Substances Control Act Inventory, although the EPA total for recent output is less than 9,000.

It's simply asking too much of most people formulating a consumer product only to include ingredients that are proven not to harm living systems.

But what if design teams seeking safer ingredients didn't have to know much about the molecules that comprise the stuff they're making? What if they had a handy menu that graded each chemical? In theory, picking a less-toxic choice could be as simple as shunning an "F" or "C" ingredient for an "A" or a "B" on the list.

We really saw this as a key to unlock in order to improve safe and circular chemistry.

That's the vision being advanced by ChemFORWARD, a mission-driven nonprofit backed by leading corporations with serious ambitions to accelerate safer chemistry. The effort is attracting pioneers in green chemistry, design and data to build a first-of-its-kind clearinghouse to help design teams and supply chains ditch hazardous chemicals for good.

"We really saw this as a key to unlock in order to improve safe and circular chemistry," said Mike Werner, circular economy lead at Google, who serves on the nonprofit's advisory board. The search giant pushes for safer chemistry and a circular economy on myriad levels, including within its office spaces, at its data centers and inside the devices it sells. "ChemFORWARD fits [into] this really big important puzzle toward making materials healthy and safe."

Google is among ChemFORWARD's roster of "co-design" partners that includes Sephora, Target, Levi's, HP, Levi Strauss, H&M, Nike, Steelcase and Method, each recognized for various leadership efforts toward safer chemistry. Last year, for example, Sephora became the first major cosmetics retailer to broadcast its policy on chemicals. Target's Sustainable Product Standard came on the scene in 2013. Nike has its own Chemistry Playbook. Levi's innovations include its recyclable Wellthread denim line. Other ChemFORWARD partners include the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals.

ChemFORWARD's technical advisory board is led by Art Fong, Apple's green chemistry lead. Corporate scientists and chemists also come together via ChemFORWARDfor regular meetings and peer reviews with third-party toxicology firms. The nonprofit isbetting that teaming up with such pathfinders will help spark lasting industry innovation via its tool, in the processlowering the cost for even small companies to find safer chemical alternatives fortheir products.

"Our intention is to reverse decades of negative impacts from the inundation of toxic chemicals that we find in our products, our economy, our environment and our bodies," said ChemFORWARD Executive Director Stacy Glass, who has led the effort from a project within theCradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute to its current iteration, housed within the Washington, D.C.-based Healthy Building Network, a nonprofit that advocates for sustainable building materials. "We need new solutions, new ways of thinking about things to have safe, circular products."

We are fundamentally changing the way that chemical hazard data is created, maintained, distributed and financed.

ChemFORWARD seeks not only to display what chemicals not to use, but also what's available instead. This aim progresses away from the longtime industry reliance on restricted substances lists that can leave product makers empty-handed, while liberating data that until recently has been trapped in various PDF reports or proprietary databases.

ChemFORWARD seeks to stand apart from other data plays by building bridges in the supply chain with its "collaborative, harmonized" approach. "We are fundamentally changing the way that chemical hazard data is created, maintained, distributed and financed," Glass said.

However, ChemFORWARD is entering an area that's already seeing a lot of activity. Multiple hazards assessment standards are available in increasingly usable formats to help companies identify problematic chemicals. The for-profit firm Scivera, launched in 2008 in Charlottesville, Virginia, offers a subscription database SciveraLENS, with color-coded grades for chemicals based on their inherent hazards.

ChemFORWARD's web-based software pools together data from some of the best-known chemicals assessment methodologies. A color-coded letter grade rolls up information from the United Nations Globally Harmonized System of Classification, Cradle to Cradle (on material health) and the EPA SaferChoice Safer Chemical Ingredients List. That results in offering users more than 50 pieces of interpretation and over 20 human and environmental endpoints, such as around neurotoxicity or aquatic toxicity, for each chemical.

"The work that ChemFORWARD is doing and proposes to do will provide important additional information to a community of organizations seeking real-world data to better understand the safety implications of their materials choices," said green chemistry trailblazer John C. Warner, a distinguished research fellow at synthetic biology startup Zymergen.

Think of nearly any consumer-product chemical villain that's dominated recent headlines for disrupting ecosystems or being linked to cancer or hormonal havoc. Chances are ChemFORWARD is building a collection of alternatives to it. These include ortho-phthalate plasticizers found in flexible toys, UV-blocking oxybenzone in sunscreens and halogenated flame retardants in electronics. ChemFORWARD has portfolios of alternative cleaning solvents, cosmetics preservatives and fragrance fixatives. The goal is for ChemFORWARD to scale up from about 200 to 2,000 safer chemicals in 2021.

"The more technical person can see the technical data they need," Glass said. "But most companies need, Can I use it [or] can I not use it? for an answer."

ChemFORWARD is building clearinghouses for electronics and food packaging, but one of its earliest repositories coalesces data in beauty and personal care, with hundreds of safer alternatives. Someone shopping around to include a safer surfactant in a skin cleanser or an emollient in a moisturizing lotion can consult the tool for the green "A" or "B" options.

Sephora, which is mindful of its many eco-conscious young customers and became a co-design partner with ChemFORWARD in March, recently took steps to advance beyond its restricted substances list. The company says 94 percent of all the products it sells eliminate potentially negative "high-priority" chemicals. The Clean at Sephora label for sustainable beauty care products in its catalog features goods from more than five dozen smaller companies, including BeautyCounter.

"We knew the importance of creating a baseline expectation for all brands in terms of safety and the environment," Carley Klekas, Sephora's senior manager of product sustainability, said. "Sephora already had rigorous requirements in place, specifically with our in-house brand, Sephora Collection, that goes beyond EU regulations, but we also wanted to expand this even more across the brands we carry."

It teamed up with ChemFORWARD and EDF on a research project that prioritized four chemical categories c
ommon within beauty and personal care: preservatives; benzophenones; silicones; and ethanolamines. Sephora then sponsored chemical hazard assessments for the alternative ingredients named in the research. As a result of the partnership, safer alternatives have been assessed for 73 percent of Sephoras high-priority chemicals and made available to industry via ChemFORWARD.

"We needed a credible and innovative resource to help us assess alternatives to chemicals within our policy, to ensure they were safe, and that we were avoiding regrettable substitution," Klekas said. "We know this is important work to be done and will ultimately help showcase that there are safer alternatives to the high-priority chemicals we seek to reduce in our assortment, while also help the industry identify gaps where more innovation is needed."

Glass sees ChemFORWARDs highest mission as its potential for furthering innovation. But that requires buy-in not only from retailers and product manufacturers, but also from the chemical producers themselves. The process of making chemical substitutions is only one step along the path to optimizing shiny, new, safer chemicals, which Glass hopes to help propel.

Enter Pat Harmon, industry manager at chemicals powerhouse BASF. Hes been involved with ChemFORWARD for many years after meeting Lauren Heine through a Green Chemistry & Commerce Council (G3C) event. Heine was then executive director of the nonprofit Northwest Green Chemistry and had just joined MaterialWise, the early iteration of ChemFORWARD, where she's now director of safer materials and data integrity.

BASFs sustainability strategy hinges upon developing chemicals that advance sustainability, called "accelerators," which account for more than 25 percent of its sales. Ninety-five percent of BASF's products have been evaluated for potential sustainability contributions. BASF has a history of involvement in collaborative assessments, and it quantifies the sustainability benefits of its products through life-cycle assessments and its Sustainable Solutions Steering methodology.

It's really powerful in terms of thinking about moving to green chemistry.

Harmon aligned with Heine on the need for better third-party assessments for alternatives to troublesome ortho-phthalates, which are tied to multiple health problems. He also liked what she described of how the fledgling nonprofit chemical clearinghouse might lower the cost to companies of chemical assessments while moving away from "negative lists." ChemFORWARD's involvement with leadership brands and retailers, which are ultimately BASFs downstream customers, also helped to elevate the case for BASF getting involved.

Eventually, BASF shared details for ChemFORWARD about several of its plasticizer accelerators, including its ortho-phthalate alternatives Hexamoll DINCH and Palatinol DOTP. These are used in flexible PVC and in a broad range of applications including childrens toys, yoga mats, wiring cable, vinyl flooring and automotive interiors.

"Now, chemical suppliers have the option to market their safer alternatives and to validate their low-hazard claims through an independent, trusted platform," Glass said. "In this way, we create a bridge between chemical suppliers, their customers and prospective customers with data that has been traditionally hard to come by, difficult to interpret and sometimes hard to trust."

Harmon sees ChemFORWARD as a useful tool for companies that ultimately use BASFs chemicals as well as a resource that can help move safer chemistry forward in industry, demonstrating for BASF's customers the value of the safer decisions behind their product formulations. And the involvement with CHEMForward may help BASF to identify potential market gaps in areas where the number of attractive chemical alternatives is slim.

"This is why the ChemFORWARD project is so important," Harmon said. "Its one of the ways to help understand that you're making the right decisions to move to new substances. I would really like to see this approach be used more and more." For example, what if ChemFORWARD could grow to include the broader area of plastics additives in addition to plasticizers, such as flame retardants and light stabilizers? That could bring more of the plastic industry onboard, he added.

"If you make it broader for the whole plastics industry, then you have a lot of people who would have interest in using this type of tool," Harmon said, optimistic that ChemFORWARD may help to advance plastics circularity longer term. For example, if it identifies safer plastics used, say, in medical equipment that's currently discarded, then more IV bags or other consumables finally might be recycled without the possibility of circulating harmful chemicals into the marketplace and the environment, Harmon said.

ChemFORWARD's small team hopes to encourage more chemical suppliers to get involved by providing them a means to bring forth their safer chemicals in a way thats trustworthy, verified and peer-reviewed by a third party, also broadening the availability of their chemicals for certifications and reporting. Companies can use this information for marketing purposes, including for consumer labels, but it's also critical for risk management and verifying internal claims about a product.

"As we get more and more eyes on our platform, we'll be able to make that case even more strongly that: 'Hey, chemical suppliers, if you have good stuff and you want to verify those claims, this is a great place to do it,'" Glass said. "We feel a tremendous sense of urgency to not only stop unknowing toxic chemical exposure, but to empower those who are working to create a safe and circular future for all."

Glass spent a decade in green building, serving as VP for the built environment at the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, which shaped in 2016 the earliest version of ChemFORWARD. Research across industries, up and down supply chains, found that companies lacked information to use better chemistry. Good attempts by other nonprofits had failed to gain traction. Recognizing a larger industry need, the institute spun out the effort, which currently counts less than 10 staff members distributed across the U.S. and a network of toxicologists.

"I realized this was a data organization problem, our not knowing what was in our stuff and what were exposed to, and the incredible tax this exposure is causing to society," Glass said. "Im not a chemist, Im not a toxicologist I said, we can fix this. I see the solution clearly. Ill take any data solution, any scalable solution, that will get this information into the hands of designers and formulators so (they) can make safer decisions."

It's possible ChemFORWARD ultimately could feed data into life-cycle analysis or supply chain management tools. It can't hurt to have Google as a partner, and it's worth noting that the advisory board's latest addition is Kimberly Shenk, co-founder of the AI-driven supply chain transparency startup Novi.

The movement, however, has a long road ahead. It's still relatively cheap for companies to crank out new molecules, and the chemicals industry is a powerful economic engine and lobbying force.

Nevertheless, ChemFORWARD and others pivoting away from the conventional focus in managing chemical risksand instead toward making decisions based on inherent toxicity is a huge paradigm shift, said Mark Rossi, executive director of Clean Production Action, who also created the GreenScreen for Safer Chemicals hazard assessment method with Heine.

"It's really powerful in terms of thinking about moving to green chemistry," he said. "All chemistry should be green chemistry, and how do you get there? This is all part of that movement toward making choices based on hazards."

Rebuilding Chemistry With Julian Edelman Should Be Near Top Of Cam Newtons To-Do List – CBS Boston

BOSTON (CBS) Julian Edelman spent the first 10 years of his career with the Patriots making big catch after big catch. Now in his 11th season, hes just looking to make any catch.

From 2013 until last season, Edelman had been New Englands most reliable receiver, a shoo-in for 7-12 catches every game. He was one of Tom Bradys many security blankets, a safe bet to move the chains whenever the Patriots needed to keep the offense moving. If the Patriots needed to pick up eight yards to keep a drive alive, Edelman would fight tooth and nail for nine. Most of the time, there was no denying him in his quest to keep the Patriots going toward the end zone.

He was Mr. Reliable. But Edelmans transition from having Brady as his quarterback to Cam Newton has gone as smoothly as a trip down Route 24. Newton made it sound like hed be taking Highway 11 quite a bit when he first arrived in New England, but his GPS is making him throw the football every which way but Edelmans over the last month.

In Sundays 33-6 blowout loss to the 49ers at Gillette Stadium, Edelman was targeted by Newton just once, resulting in an interception when the QB threw behind his intended target. Edelmans only reception of the game came after Newton was benched, when Jarrett Stidham hit him for a 13-yard gain in the fourth quarter.

While its become clear that Edelman, now 34, has lost a step or two in the last few years, and his tendency to drop a few passes has increased, hes still better than one catch off three targets. Hes still getting open, hes still in a good spot to make one of those patented Edelman catch-and-runs, but the connection just isnt there.

That all starts with the quarterback.

We got to figure it out. Our Wi-Fi is definitely off, Newton said after Sundays loss. And its frustrating because knowing the person Julian is and knowing the body of work that he puts in each and every week and day, from preparation to biometrically with his body, you fall in love with a person like that.

The connectionshould work, as we saw in Week 2 when Edelman exploded for 11 receptions for a career-high 179 yards. It was vintage Edelman and then some against the Seattle Seahawks, and the New England offense scored a season-high 30 points in the losing effort. The Newton-Edelman connectioncan be a good one.

But since that career day for Edelman, he has caught just five passes that Newton has sent his way. We use that phrase lightly because many of Newtons throws to the receiver have hopped, skipped or jumped on their way there, or in many cases, been too far behind Edelman for him to do anything but get a finger tip on the ball.

Newton said that Edelman did exactly what he was supposed to do on his route that led to Sundays interception, but he wasnt on the same page with his receiver. That falls squarely on Newtons shoulders, and the QB knows it.

Many are wondering if Newtons lack of chemistry with Edelman is because Newton is basically refusing to throw to his right since the start of the month. Newton continues to say hes healthy, but if hes ignoring one side of the field, there has to be some kind of explanation for it. If thats the case, it is likely health-related.

But the bottom line is that the Patriots offense has been putrid, and the quarterback has lost any and all chemistry he had with his top receiver.

The New England offense has a lot of work to do if they want to start winning games or at least giving the team a chance to win games. Rebuilding the chemistry between the quarterback and his No. 1 receiver is a great place to start.
