Additive mixture speeds up process for making combustible ice – Chemistry World

Singapore-based scientists have discovered a way to rapidly form methane hydrates at atmospheric pressure and moderate temperature by combining the additive 1,3-dioxolane with an amino acid. This mixture is significantly less toxic than traditional additives and results in the fastest reaction time ever reported to produce hydrates for stable methane storage.

Current industrial methods for storing methane have their limitations. Liquefied natural gas requires extremely low temperatures (163C). Meanwhile compressed natural gas poses a safety risk and requires expensive storage tanks. However, solidified natural gas, such as gas hydrates, is a compact way for storing natural gas under moderate pressures and temperatures, and uses water as the main raw material (>94%).

Gas hydrates are crystalline inclusion compounds where gas molecules are trapped inside host cages made up of water molecules. Nature has been storing methane as gas hydrates for millions of years and these structures represent a significant source of the cleanest-burning fossil fuel. To the naked eye, methane hydrates present themselves simply as ice or snow, explains Praveen Linga from the National University of Singapore. Methane hydrate formation is a simple physical phase change process and gas hydrates melt the same way as ice, releasing the stored gas and water, earning it the name combustible ice.

Commercial applications of gas hydrates are limited by problems in forming the hydrates at a fast enough rate, and ensuring their prolonged storage stability. Now, Praveen and his co-workers have found that adding a small concentration of l-tryptophan, along with the thermodynamic and kinetic promoter 1,3-dioxolane, results in ultra-rapid hydrate formation.

l-tryptophan is a benign and hydrophobic amino acid, which functions here as a kinetic promoter. It increases the porosity and flexibility of the hydrate crystals and opens up pathways within the crystal microstructure. This facilitates greater methanewater contact and allows faster methane diffusion into the solid phase.

Adding l-tryptophan caused a 147% increase in the hydrate rate of formation compared to a water1,3-dioxolane system. The team also discovered that the hydrate pellet exhibited incredible stability when stored at atmospheric pressure and a temperature of 5C. Moreover, their additive mixture is also less toxic than traditional additives such as tetrahydrofuran, which is both volatile and carcinogenic.

Carolyn Koh, director of the Center for Hydrate Research at the Colorado School of Mines, US, calls the research an impressive advance. The ability to rapidly form methane hydrates at lower pressure conditions and under mild refrigeration are necessary requirements, and when coupled with optimised and reduced promoter concentration, will be important for practical applications of gas hydrates.

Jeong-Hoon Sa, a gas hydrate researcher at Dong-a University in South Korea, says the practical use of hydrates has been hindered by their insufficient formation rate and long-term stability. It is remarkable that the produced hydrates can retain natural gas only at 268.15K under atmospheric pressure for eight days. The next pilot-scale testing will further advance industrial applicability of the solidified natural gas technology process.

We firmly believe that this is the first solidified natural gas technology process developed that can genuinely boast feasibility for commercial adoption, says Praveen. He says the team now plan to enhance the volumetric gas storage capacity of the combustible ice by tuning the additive concentrations and designing new reactors.

On the University of Minnesotas Northrop Mall, a small corgi runs around. She curiously sniffs as she rummages through the bushes, pulling on her leash as students walk past and garnering smiles from various passersby who are too shy to say hi.

Before COVID-19 shut down campus, seeing Butter the chemistry corgi was a regular occurrence for students. Butters owner, Bach Nguyen, a graduate student studying computational chemistry, would regularly bring her to work at Kolthoff Hall and walk her around campus multiple times a day.

In the age of COVID, Nguyen mostly works from home but still shares Butters life by walking around campus several times a week, sending her on walks with third-year chemistry student Liz Schulz and posting on Butters Instagram account.

Butter, described by Nguyen as, hyper, very hyper, has become famous on campus. Shes recognized by students who became accustomed to her regular walks, who follow her Instagram, or who, like Schulz, showed up at Nguyens office just to meet her.

Schulz said she had Nguyen as a teachers assistant last semester and soon began showing up at his office every day to meet with Butter. Eventually Nguyen started sending her out on daily walks with Butter.

Because Nguyen is rarely in his office these days, Schulz, who thinks of herself as Butters cool aunt, stops by his home and continues to take Butter out for walks once a week.

If Im having a down day or am stressed out about school, she helps me get out of my head, Schulz said.

While Schulz and Nguyen agree that Butter would make a terrible therapy dog, her existence helps them and others destress.

Therapy dogs are trained to be calm and nice, but shes more playful, Nguyen said. He thinks that sets her apart from therapy animals; people find her comforting because shes more energetic.

Nguyen said Butter is handling the pandemic well, because she gets enough walks to sustain her energy levels. But shes ready to go back to her old routine. Sze Cheng, Ngyuens wife and a biochemistry graduate student, said that Butters an extrovert and misses meeting new people.

Nguyen and Cheng adopted Butter in October of 2019 and began bringing her on campus to help socialize her shortly afterwards. Cheng said it was important to socialize her early in her life.

Nguyen also didnt want to leave his baby corgi behind while he was at work.

When he first started bringing her in, there were no rules on whether he was allowed to have a dog at work. Soon after, because of Butter, his department created animal guidelines, and he was able to get Butter registered with the University.

The chemistry department has wholeheartedly welcomed Butter. Shes made friends like Schulz and Mollie Dunlap, an assistant to the chemistry department head, who even bought her a custom University of Minnesota dog jacket with Butter stitched into it.

When asked if Nguyen was surprised at peoples reaction to her on campus, he laughed and said, Its a baby corgi! Id be slightly concerned if everybody didnt respond.

1) Clean

Everything from clean ingredients to clean food to describing your diet as clean eating and even going as far as to describe your entire lifestyle as clean living are plastered all over some of the most popular social media influencers pages. So, what does it mean? Great question! It can mean whatever you want it to mean. It has absolutely no scientific or practical meaning.

5) No toxic chemicals

There is no such thing as a toxic chemical, there are only toxic doses. The phrase the dose makes the poison applies to all chemicals, both natural and synthetic. Every chemical, even water, can be toxic at a given dose.

No food organic or otherwise contains a toxic level of pesticides, and organic farming uses pesticides of which have overlapping toxicities to those of synthetic pesticides. The organic industry has done an excellent job of misinforming consumers about conventional foods and positioning organic as safer and healthier even though this is not the case.

Unfortunately, consumers will continue to be misinformed and misled by marketing campaigns and trendy buzzwords. The best thing to do is to just skip over the marketing labels and look at the factual information located on the back of the food package.

Spinal motoneurons of the human newborn are highly synchronized during leg movements – Science Advances

Motoneurons of neonatal rodents show synchronous activity that modulates the development of the neuromuscular system. However, the characteristics of the activity of human neonatal motoneurons are largely unknown. Using a noninvasive neural interface, we identified the discharge timings of individual spinal motoneurons in human newborns. We found highly synchronized activities of motoneurons of the tibialis anterior muscle, which were associated with fast leg movements. Although neonates motor units exhibited discharge rates similar to those of adults, their synchronization was significantly greater than in adults. Moreover, neonatal motor units showed coherent oscillations in the delta band, which is directly translated into force generation. These results suggest that motoneuron synchronization in human neonates might be an important mechanism for controlling fast limb movements, such as those of primitive reflexes. In addition to help revealing mechanisms of development, the proposed neural interface might monitor children at risk of developing motor disorders.

Joe Mathews: The number of COVID-19 deaths in the US would fill Forest Lawn Memorial Park by January – KCRW

The numbers keep going higher and higher. California reported more than 11 thousand new COVID-19 cases Wednesday--bringing the states total so far to just over one (m)million. And nationwide we have surpassed a quarter million deaths.

That is an impossibly large number to comprehend. Thats why in this edition of Zocalos Connecting California, commentator Joe Mathews took a trip to Forest Lawn Memorial Park, where 340,000 bodies are laid to rest. The United States is projected to reach 340,000 recorded COVID deaths by January.

If youre having a hard time processing the scale of death produced by the COVID-19 pandemic, heres a California alternative for wrapping your mind around the carnage:

Visit the largest, prettiest cemetery you can find. I recommend the original Forest Lawn, in Glendale, the most Californian of cemeteries.

I recently walked the 290 acres of this memorial park, the first of six Forest Lawn parks in Southern California, and found that it clarified my thinking and improved my mood.

It also helped me to put in perspective the full human toll of COVID-19. Since Forest Lawn opened here 114 years ago, in 1906, it has interred 340,000 souls on this property. Under current projections, the U.S. will reach 340,000 COVID deaths in January.

Such statistics reflect a fundamental human failure: We experience individual death intensely (be it a friends death or the killing of George Floyd), but struggle to recognize death in the aggregate. This myopia is why we need cemeteries right now.

Cemeteries are not just a place to reflect on the past, wrote longtime Forest Lawn chief executive John Llewelyn, in A Cemetery Should Be Forever. They remind us to keep the present in perspective.

Especially when the present is so frightening.

Forest Lawns mission was about putting a sunny California spin on death.

I believe in a happy eternal life, Forest Lawns first real leader Hubert Eaton wrote in 1917. I therefore know the cemeteries of today are wrong, because they depict an end, not a beginning I shall try to build at Forest Lawn a Great Park filled with towering trees, sweeping lawns, splashing fountains, singing birds, beautiful statuary, cheerful flowers, noble memorial architecture with interiors full of light and color, and redolent of the worlds best history and romances.

The resulting memorial-park has been critiqued as a Disneyland of Death. But at this moment, I found visiting the happiest cemetery on Earth soothing, and thought-provoking.

I encountered joggers, bikers, painters, and babies in strollers. I heard birds sing as I enjoyed 360-degree L.A. views from the esplanade. A half-dozen people chatted amiably while admiring The Mystery of Life, a sculpture group of 18 human figures gathered at stream that flows toward an unknown destination.

By its usual standards, Forest Lawn was pretty quiet. Its art museumwhich houses an important collection of stained glass and William Bouguereaus 1881 painting Song of the Angelswas closed. There were no school field trips on the grounds. Tens of thousands of people, including Ronald Reagan, have been married at Forest Lawn, but during my visit there were no weddings in the cemeterys three churches, which were locked.

Still, I enjoyed the way the place resembles Southern California in miniature, with its varied topographies (hills, valleys, a sprawling basin), and obsession with being big (Forest Lawns wrought-iron gates are twice as wide as those at Buckingham Palace).

In.an older, flatter cemetery section I walked amidst the century-old graves of people who died in their 20s of Spanish flu. In the Court of Freedom, I admired a giant outdoor reproduction of John Trumbulls Signing of the Declaration of Independence and reflected on Jeffersons wisdom in putting life before liberty and pursuit of happiness.

This pandemic is killing so fast that were not stopping to appreciate the lives lost. We will need to remember the plagues lessons, to honor its sacrifices, so we might see its after-life as a beginning, not an end.

Here in California, we should memorialize every last one of our pandemic dead, with a monument that is beautiful and big, and makes people happy when they visit it.

In the success rates of IVFs or any assisted reproduction procedure, the role of Embryologists is often underrated. Comprehending the role of embryologist

Before learning about embryologist, its imperative to understand the whole IVF process. It starts from extracting the eggs, retrieving sperm sample, and then fertilizing them manually by injecting sperm into an egg in the laboratory on a dish. The embryo is then transferred into the uterus. After the retrieval of eggs, the eggs are handed over to a team of highly trained embryologists that perform these procedures in a sophisticated and well-controlled environment

Embryologists are the experts of Clinical Embryology, a branch of biology concerned with the study of fertilization of eggs and development of embryos. They are the scientists who help to create embryos outside the womb using sperms and eggs.

Future of embryologists

As more and more couples are now going for IVF when they are unable to conceive naturally, it shows there is an increase in the demand for ART treatments. This also indicates that there will be a demand for trained embryologists. The surplus of embryologist demand will also call for the requirement of intense knowledge in application of emerging technologies in the near future as technology is no doubt ruling the IVF industry.

An embryologist can be employed by assisted reproductive clinics in government as well as private hospitals. Gradually, one can also be given more responsible positions as Lab manager or Lab director. But embryologist is such a job which needs rigorous training in laboratory skills, management and be updated about the latest technologies. Seeing the trend, many educational institutions have introduced embryology courses in their module. One can also join these institutes after completion of their course as faculty of embryologist.

The Secret Social Lives of Giant Poisonous Rats – Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute

The African crested rat (Lophiomys imhausi) is hardly the continents most fearsome-looking creaturethe rabbit-sized rodent resembles a gray puffball crossed with a skunkyet its fur is packed with a poison so lethal it can fell an elephant, and just a few milligrams can kill a human. In a Journal of Mammology paper published yesterday, researchers from the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, University of Utah and National Museums of Kenya found the African crested rat is the only mammal known to sequester plant toxins for chemical defense, and they uncovered an unexpected social lifethe rats appear to be monogamous and may even form small family units with their offspring.

Its considered a black box of a rodent, said Sara Weinstein, lead author, Smithsonian-Mpala postdoctoral fellow and postdoctoral researcher at the University of Utah. We initially wanted to confirm the toxin sequestration behavior was real and along the way discovered something completely unknown about social behavior. Our findings have conservation implications for this mysterious and elusive rat.

People in East Africa have long suspected the rat to be poisonous. A 2011 paper proposed these large rodents sequester toxins from the poison arrow tree (Acokanthera schimperi). A source of traditional arrow poisons, Acokanthera contains cardenolides, compounds similar to those found in monarch butterflies, cane toads and some heart medications for humans. Cardenolides, particularly the ones in Acokanthera, are highly toxic to most animals.

The initial 2011 study observed this behavior in only a single individual, said co-author Denise Dearing from the University of Utah. A main goal of our study was to determine how common this exceptional behavior was.

When threatened, the African crested rat lives up to its name and erects a crest of hair on its back to reveal a warning on its flanksblack-and-white stripes running from neck to tail on each side of its body. The 2011 study hypothesized that the rats chew the Acokanthera bark and lick the plant toxins into specialized hairs at the center of these stripes.

In the new study, researchers trapped 25 African crested rats, the largest sample size of the species ever trapped. Using motion-activated cameras, they documented nearly 1,000 hours of rat behavior. For the first time, they recorded multiple rats sequestering Acokanthera toxins and discovered the rats appear to be monogamous and may even form small family units with their offspring.

Everyone thought it was a solitary animal, said Bernard Agwanda, curator of mammals at the National Museums of Kenya, co-author of this study and the 2011 paper. Ive been researching this rat for more than 10 years, so you would expect there to be fewer surprises. This can carry over into conservation policy.

A Rich Social Life

As a Smithsonian postdoctoral fellow at the Mpala Research Centre in Kenya, Weinstein first searched for the rats with camera traps, but found that they rarely triggered the cameras. Weinstein was then joined by Katrina Nyawira, the papers second author and a graduate student at Oxford Brookes University. Together, they spent months experimenting with live traps to capture the elusive rodents.

We talked to rangers and ranchers to ask whether theyd seen anything, said Nyawira. Eventually they figured out that loading the traps with smelly foods like fish, peanut butter and vanilla did the trick. Out of 30 traps, we finally got two animals. That was a win. This rat is really rare.

Those two animals changed the course of the study. They first caught an individual female, then caught a male at the same site two days later.

We put these two rats together in the enclosure and they started purring and grooming each other, Weinstein said. Which was a big surprise, since everyone we talked to thought that they were solitary. I realized that we had a chance to study their social interactions.

Weinstein and Nyawira transformed an abandoned cow shed into a research station, constructing stalls equipped with ladders and nest boxes to simulate their habitat in tree cavities. They placed cameras in strategic spots of each pen and then analyzed nocturnal hours, tracking the total activity, movement and feeding behavior. The aim was to build a baseline of normal behavior before testing whether behavior changed after the rats chewed the toxin cardenolides from the poison arrow tree.

Theyre herbivores, essentially rat-shaped little cows, Weinstein said. They spend a lot of time eating, but they walk around, mate, groom, climb up the walls, sleep in the nest box.

The footage and behavioral observations strongly support a monogamous lifestyle. They share many of the traits common among monogamous animals: large size, a long life span and a slow reproductive rate. In addition, the researchers trapped a few large juveniles in the same location as adult pairs, suggesting that offspring spend an extended period of time with their parents. In the pens, the paired rats spent more than half of their time near each other and frequently followed each other around. The researchers also recorded special squeaks, purrs and other communicative noises making up a wide vocal repertoire. Further behavioral studies and field observation would uncover more insights into their reproductive and family life.

After the researchers established a baseline of behavior, they offered the rats branches from the poison arrow tree. Although the rats did not sequester every time the plant was offered, 10 rats did. They chewed it, mixed it with spit and licked and chewed it into their specialized hairs. Exposure to the Acokanthera toxins did not alter rat behavior and neither did eating milkweed, the same cardenolide-enriched plant used as chemical defense by monarch butterflies. Combined, these observations suggest that crested rats are uniquely resistant to these toxins.

Most people think that it was a myth because of the potency of the tree, Nyawira said. But we caught it on video! It was very crazy.

The rats were selective about using Acokanthera cardenolides, suggesting that rats may be picky about their toxin source, or that anointed toxins remain potent for a long time, just like traditional arrow poisons from the same source.

African Crested Rat Conservation

The African crested rat is listed as a species of least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, but there is little actual data on the animals. Agwanda has studied African crested rats for more than a decadeand sees indications that they are in trouble.

We dont have accurate numbers, but we have inferences, said Agwanda, who continues to monitor the populations. There was a time in Nairobi when cars would hit them and there was roadkill everywhere. Now encountering them is difficult. Our trapping rate is low. Their population is declining.

The research team is planning future studies to better understand the rats physiology and behavior. We are particularly interested in exploring the genetic mechanisms that allow the crested rats and their parasites to withstand the toxic cardenolides said co-author Jess Maldonado, research geneticist at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute and Weinsteins Smithsonian-Mpala Postdoctoral fellowship co-advisor.

We are looking at a broad range of questions influenced by habitat change, Agwanda said. Humans have cleared forests to make farms and roads. We need to understand how that impacts their survival. In addition, Agwanda is building an exhibit at the Museums of Kenya to raise awareness about this unique poisonous animal.

First ever virtual event at the QC Godwin-Ternbach Museum – The Knight News

Due to eight months of mostly-online courses, a number of Queens College campus facilities have been struggling to fulfill their intended roles because there is only a small fraction of students that can utilize them. Among these facilities is the Godwin-Ternbach Museum on campus, a place where the continuation of online studies has prompted the centers first-ever virtual exhibit, which opened on the museums website on September 29th.

The exhibit, titled Human Nature, includes a carefully-ordered progression of portraits in a fashion remarkably similar to that of an in-person gallery. The display opens with a cluster of pieces under the title Realism, which prefaces the rest of the show by introducing the art of portraiture in its purest observational form. The pieces in this section span a great deal of years and media, providing a basis for some of the more unconventional portraits to follow.

In the sections titled The Timeless Gaze and The Male Gaze, observational paintings and sculptures are displayed to further portray the desire of the artist to understand humanity. The former incorporates terra cotta sculptures dating back to at least the fifth century B.C., while the latter includes more recent works detailing the muses of various artists. Despite the vast difference between the dates of creation of the pieces, the longing to understand the subject is evident in each, a feeling that the exhibition describes as an impossible yearning which prompts the artist to mimic the human form.

In the more contemporary section, Pop Art, the viewer observes the active role of portraiture in defining rather than simply observing. The work in this section includes pieces by Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, as well as a haunting two-panel painting by Roger Shimomura, which is titled Yellow Rat Bastard (How to Tell the Difference Between Chinese and Japanese). Each panel bursts with a number of crowded faces, marking a transition of the portrait artists role from observer to that of defender and definer of cultures. Similar strategies are implemented in a number of later sections. Pieces from Satire and Caricature and The Honorific Portrait show how portrait artists have the ability to take on a politically and socially relevant role in either criticizing, mocking, or exalting their subject. Meanwhile, work from Describing the Spirit and The Human Condition follow by displaying how an artist may manipulate the subjects of their work to appeal to worshippers or to instill feelings of outrage and injustice.

In Illustrating the Dream, the subjects of the portraits float between reality and possibility, providing the most integral turning point from the observational start of the exhibition to some of the more abstract pieces at the end. Particularly in the heavy-handed reproduction of Georges Rouaults Tte de Pierrot (Head of a Clown), the viewer observes the departure from the traditional portrayal of the human into the realm of vague possibility that can be seen in some of the exhibits later pieces. This transition especially enables the viewer to embrace the pieces in the final section, Self Portraits and Alter Egos, which includes work that spans from the highly realistic William Hogarth Painting the Comic Muse to the somewhat frightening and distorted etching by the artist Paul Klee, titled The Comedian. This group of pieces draws the subject of the portrait inward for the purpose of self-definition. A number of the other pieces in the self-portrait section also refer directly to art as something very clearly tied to the makers identity. A sample of this is the gracefully sketched etching by Picasso titled Peintre Travaillant (Painter Working). In this piece, the painter and his companion are drawn in a bare and complete state of focus on the painters work, a portrayal which depicts the very definition of the artists being.

In light of current circumstances preventing many from viewing art in a traditional museum setting, this exhibition provided those interested with the opportunity to observe and contemplate an artistic portrayal of the human condition throughout a vast timespan and within various media. The topic holds both current relevance and inspiration for the viewer as they undertake the virtual trek from realism toward unearthing the self through the gradual observation of the human condition.

Public asked to help prevent spread of hemlock woolly adelgid – shorelinemedia.net

Efforts are underway to survey 906 hemlock-dense acres at Ludington State Park following the discovery of hemlock woolly adelgid, and with the prevention of further infection a top priority, state park and DNR officials say now is the best time for the public to keep an eye out for the invasive species.

Hemlock wooly adelgids are insects that latch onto hemlock trees, feeding on sap and draining nutrients, according to Ludington Sate Park Manager Jim Gallie.

The insects are easiest to spot during the winter, before the small, white, ovisacs which look like cotton balls stuck to the underside of hemlock branches hatch.

The insects have been identified on five trees at the state park, and those trees have been treated by members of the Michigan Civilian Conservation Corps. Now, that seven-person crew is taking on the daunting task of surveying the rest of the parks trees.

They treated it and intensified their surveying efforts in the area, Gallie told the Daily News. Its something people need to be aware of (because) they can have a devastating effect.

Gallie said infected trees have been found along the parks island, canoe and logging trails, and theyve been treated with prophylactic chemicals to make sure the insects dont reproduce.

Heidi Frei, forest health specialist with the DNR Parks and Recreation Division who directs the crew members, said the hemlock woolly adelgid was first detected in Michigan in 2017. Its believed to have entered the state through the nursery industry, hitching a ride on trees being brought in from outside the state. It can be spread from tree to tree by birds, deer, wind gusts and even human beings.

According to Frei, Ludington State Park has been a high priority for her team since the species was first detected in the state, but there was no sign of it at the park until October. She said its remarkable that the insects were spotted at the park in such low numbers, and she commended the crew members for the discovery.

Frei said its important for the public to know that the invasive species is in the area.

Though the density of the species in the infected trees is currently quite low, Frei said it could quickly become a much bigger problem due to the rapid reproduction rate of the insects.

Its definitely something people should be aware of and should be looking for, she said. The more eyes out there, the better. If folks have hemlock trees on their property and theyre able to check their trees, or if theyre hiking we really need folks to stop and take a look.

One useful resource is the Michigan Invasive Species Information Network (MISIN), which is run by Michigan State University and funded by the state. Frei said people can download the MISIN smartphone application to report possible sightings of HWA, or to compare a speck of white they see on a hemlock tree to photos of HWA to help people confirm that theyre seeing the insects.

Frei also recommended reaching out to the Mason-Lake Conservation District, which is ramping up its HWA treatment and inspection efforts this year, according to Executive Director Dani McGarry.

The conservation district works directly with homeowners to help deal with hemlock woolly adelgid infections. This year, its using more resources than before.

Were basically doubling the amount of staff and time were spending on the survey and treatment of private lands, McGarry said. Were trying to focus our survey efforts within 5 miles of the lakeshore, but we can visit anyone who thinks they have an issue or wants us to take a look at their hemlock trees.

The state park isnt the only area thats been affected.

Summit Township has some property thats near Bass Lake, and last winter, there were a couple of infected trees found there. And I just learned that there are additional trees in that general area that have since become infested, McGarry said.

The Mason-Lake Conservation District has a grant from the DNR to survey and inspect private properties for HWA, and its also working with the West Michigan Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (CISMA) to bolster its efforts to prevent the species from moving farther north.

Once we find trees, thats where West Michigan CISMA comes in, McGarry said. Theyll treat the trees.

McGarry recommended that homeowners keep an eye on their trees, and keep a lookout for those white spots on the underside of the branches.

Frei said surveying work will continue at the state park throughout the winter.

In addition to the chemical treatments and the surveying, Gallie said state park employees have been trimming back hemlock trees to make sure the insects are not passed on to other areas by passing RVs brushing against the trees and carrying the adelgids off to other locations.

Both Frei and Gallie said hemlock trees are a vital part of the ecosystem in the area, and people can help to preserve the trees by keeping an eye out for HWA.

Hemlock in Michigan is not very widespread, but it has a really important ecological role, especially with the dunes, Frei said. Some of the dunes have faces that are full hemlock, and hemlocks hold those dunes in place. Theyre beautiful to look at, and they play a big role in tourism.

Gallie noted that hemlocks provide cover during the winter, keep the ground warm, are excellent for birds and have a cooling effect on streams, too.

Its definitely a very valuable tree to our ecosystem, he said.

Gallie said its likely that more infected trees will be found at the state park during the survey phase.

Its not something we wanted, but we expected it could come to the area, because of birds using the shoreline as part of their migration route, Gallie said. Theres a good chance well find more as the season progresses.

Explainer: The Allegations Against Akshaya Patra, and Why a Probe Is Needed – The Wire

News of the Akshaya Patra Foundations (APFs) independent trustees resigning, which was in the air for over a month, thrust itself into the public domain when the Deepavali crackers were being burst. Why it took such a long time to be confirmed by both parties the missionary and independent members we will see a little later. But first, let us explore the nature of the controversy that had enveloped the APF until the independent trustees resigned, and why that had a moral bearing on all those involved in running the APF.

The controversy with regard to the APF, until recently, had to do with their diet, which excluded onion and garlic. The fact that they also refused to serve eggs to children had gone against the science of nutrition. It was seen as the intransigent ideological position of ISKCON-Bangalore, which reflected upper-caste food values in India.

The ISKCON-Bangalore, as an independent private entity, was free to pursue its faith, but sadly the APF, which it hosted, was portrayed as independent of ISKCON-Bangalore right from its inception around 2000. It received public and private donations with this particular appeal, and importantly, became the agency of many state governments to implement the midday meal welfare programme. Currently, 14 state governments and the Government of Indias Ministry of Human Resources Development are partnering with the APF to serve around 19,000 schools across the country.

By perusing the names on its board of trustees, advisors and donors, one can see how the APF, over two decades, became a cherished hub where missionaries met corporates and influenced bureaucrats and politicians to hand over the governments midday meal programme. Till the ISKCON-corporate partnership happened, midday meal scheme had an autonomous community structure, and still does in many places where the APF does not reach.

It was obvious to anybody looking that in the new arrangement, faith mingled with philanthropy in a not-so-subtle way. Since this was about meals to underprivileged children, and since the APF aggressively advertised hygienic kitchens, a corruption-free milieu, a hassle-free delivery system and happy faces of kids, many were reluctant to question the intermingling of faith and philanthropy that was explicitly supported by public funds. The impression that the APF gave until recently was that it was a well-run foundation with professional expertise that came from the very cream of Indian corporates. Gradually, over the years, the reinforcement of APFs branding was such that it became an ISCKON-Bangalore programme and not one heavily subsidised by governments. There was very little effort to correct this perception by government officials or politicians.

The legitimacy that was constructed for the APF with big names like N.R. Narayana Murthy, Gururaj Desh Deshpande, Dr Devi Shetty, Deepak Chopra and others made it difficult for the media to question the group. Whenever they did, there would be enormous pressure to either retrace the opinion or abort follow up questions. Paradoxically, after all this image management in two decades, the independent trustees T.V. Mohandas Pai, Raj P. Kondur, V. Balakrishnan and Abhay Jain have now issued statements which suggest that the APF has serious governance issues and has also had to contend with wrongdoings and whistle-blower complaints.

The outgoing trustees, who did not have qualms when ISKCON-Bangalore was imposing its skewed diet plan on unsuspecting, needy children, are ironically speaking out loud now on the APF as an independent charity that has to cede greater control to independent trustees. Why is it being belatedly emphasised that the APF is a custodian of public money, and that there has to be greater transparency? It is surprising that for two decades when ISKCON-Bangalore and APF were drawing strength from each other, there was no talk of related-party transactions and quid pro quo, both literally and metaphorically speaking. The books were perhaps kept clean and separate, but there was a moral poser continuously hanging over the trustees, donors and governments on the diet. If there was a pact and a compromise between the missionaries and independents trustees on the APF board for two decades, why has it been broken now? What has caused this rupture?

An over 3,500-word letter that a member of APFs internal audit committee wrote to the trustees a few weeks ago (his name is being withheld on the request of The Wires source) has the following paragraphs that raise issues that are alarming. Here is a verbatim reproduction of some passages from the letter:

At the end, the internal audit committee member concludes that a comprehensive forensic investigation may be necessary. The Wire has not independently verified the veracity of the charges made in the letter. After the committee offered its opinion on the lines illustrated above, it is alleged that the missionaries sought an opinion from a retired judge of the Supreme Court on the other board affiliations of Suresh Senapaty, one of the audit committee members. These enquiries were unrelated to the APF. This was apparently used as moral leverage to get him to quit the committee. This was one of the triggers for the independent trustees to get behind their corporate colleague.

After the missionary trustees reconstituted the APF on November 14, 2020, a prominent outgoing trustee wrote an angry, hard-hitting, yet a revealing mail [his name is again being withheld on request from the source] to the missionary trustees. Here are a few verbatim extracts from the letter:

The Wire has not been able to independently verify the allegations made in this letter either. Another outgoing trustee agreed with the internal audit panel report, cited a November 9, 2020 letter written by yet another independent trustee, and wrote: I do hope and pray that you get your full comeuppance soon. And more importantly, I hope these issues get investigated by credible parties to reveal the full extent of the rot over which you have presided, and the work of Akshaya Patra saved from your greedy clutches.

Among the independent trustees, Abhay Jain resigned in February 2020 citing governance issues, but interestingly none of his colleagues stood up for him at that point, although they had journeyed together for two decades. The matter heated up only subsequently, and according to one source the independent trustees never intended to resign, but it could be a case of their brinkmanship having gone terribly bad. In fact, when the controversy began, the chairman of the APF, Madhu Pandit Dasa, made a fervent appeal to one of the independent trustees on October 18, 2020. Here are verbatim extracts from Dasas letter:

Given the nature of the allegations, and the fact that public funds are involved, perhaps only a multi-agency probe may offer clarity and truth. The invocation of the divine to deliver justice, as we have seen in the letters of both missionaries and independents, can wait until the probe is completed. Or, it could happen simultaneously as one has no control over it.

The Reality Demystifying the Uproar Around Mens Day – The Wire

Over the past few years, November 19 has become known by some social organisations as Mens Day in India.

Mens Day, which originated in 1999, was created to talk about what it means to be a good male role model. However, over the last few years, it has morphed into an excuse to highlight male issues, including how laws designed to protect womens rights supposedly harass innocent men.

For example, theAll India Mens Welfare Association uses derogatory language against women on its website to justify its celebration of Mens Day. They quote data from the Government of Indias National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) to mislead the public. They say that suicides among married men nearly doubled between 2005 and 2015, while suicides among married women during this time grew at a lower rate. To them, this is proof that women are causing men to die by suicide.

However, global research indicates that men die by suicide at a higher rate than women. No study has found that mens suicides are due to mental or physical harassment by women, as proclaimed by some mens rights groups.

Similarly, there is no data to support the claim that boys and young men drop out of school due to girls or women in their lives, another popular claim among mens rights activists in India. Rather, reasons cited for dropping out are mostly due to financial constraints caused by alcoholic fathers, lack of an enabling environment at home due to constant friction among parents and family members. Many are forced to drop out to support their families.

Mens Day is also a reason for many mens rights activists to air their grievances against protections to women regarding domestic violence, specifically Section 498 A of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Women Against Domestic Violence Act (PWDVA). Within a short time of these laws coming into force, advocate Dharmendra Chavan, an advocate from Nasik, formed the Purush Hakka Sanrakshan Samiti (Committee for the Protection of Rights of Men), proclaiming that 95% of the cases of harassment filed by women were false.

Purush Hakka Sanrakhsan Samiti members were invited by Mumbai-based organisations working for womens rights including my organisation, Men Against Violence and Abuse to share any data to prove their allegations about the legal misuse, but they were unable to do so.

Gender-neutral laws would be effective when men, women and transgender persons have equal opportunities at all levels of education, occupations, marital choices, professional mobility, reproduction, sexuality and property. In reality, Indian culture and society is still male-dominated. Women in India currently spend up to352 minutes per day on domestic work, 577% more than men (52 minutes), according to data provided by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. India ranked 112th in the World Economic Forums Global Gender Gap Index 2019-20.

What is the deep-rooted cause to celebrate Mens Day?

CelebratingWomens Dayhas a historical genesis over decades, as women around the world began to take to the streets to raise their voices against violation of their human rights. What is the deep-rooted cause to celebrateMens Day?

A reference is made to Jerome T. Singh from the University of West Indies, who decided to observe Mens Day on November 19 in 1999 to commemorate his fathers birthday, as he wanted to emulate his father as an excellent male role model. However, the idea of celebrating an annual international Mens Dayhas not been sustained nor received any validation by any international body.

Once that happens, India may finally be able to address the roots of the situation and build a healthy society for all.

Orchard Therapeutics Announces FDA Clearance of IND Application for OTL-200 for Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD) – BioSpace

BOSTON and LONDON, Nov. 19, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Orchard Therapeutics (Nasdaq: ORTX), a global gene therapy leader, today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared the companys Investigational New Drug (IND) application for OTL-200, an autologous, hematopoietic stem cell, lentiviral vector-based gene therapy in development for the treatment of metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD). The company also has applied for Regenerative Medicine Advanced Therapy (RMAT) designation for OTL-200 to help facilitate additional dialogue with the FDA on this important therapy.

MLD is a devastating and rapidly progressing disease, especially in its most severe form where it causes young children to lose skills they once had, such as the ability to walk, talk and engage with the world around them. Sadly, most of these children will pass away by the age of five, and their families are left with no real options other than palliative care, said Bobby Gaspar, M.D., Ph.D., chief executive officer, Orchard Therapeutics. We are committed to bringing OTL-200 forward as a potential treatment for children with this fatal neurodegenerative condition. The FDAs allowance of the IND associated with OTL-200 to move forward represents an important milestone on our journey, especially given our recent receipt of a positive CHMP opinion from the European Medicines Agency recommending full marketing authorization for the therapy.

As part of the IND filing, Orchard provided to the FDA data on 39 patients, including 9 patients from the U.S., who have received OTL-200 as part of clinical studies and compassionate use programs conducted at the San Raffaele-Telethon Institute for Gene Therapy in Milan, Italy. The company has post-treatment follow-up data of up to eight years in the earliest treated patients in these programs.

Based on the extensive clinical data gathered to date, we believe that OTL-200 offers tremendous potential to transform the lives of many young patients with MLD, Gaspar continued. About MLD and OTL-200

Metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) is a rare and life-threatening inherited disease of the bodys metabolic system occurring in approximately one in every 100,000 live births in the U.S. MLD is caused by a mutation in thearylsulfatase-A(ARSA) gene that results in the accumulation of sulfatides in the brain and other areas of the body, including the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, and/or spleen. Over time, the nervous system is damaged, leading to neurological problems such as motor, behavioral and cognitive regression, severe spasticity and seizures. Patients with MLD gradually lose the ability to move, talk, swallow, eat and see. Currently, there are no approved treatments for MLD. In its late infantile form, mortality at 5 years from onset is estimated at 50% and 44% at 10 years for juvenile patients.1 OTL-200 (autologous CD34+ cell enriched population that contains hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPC) transduced ex vivo using a lentiviral vector encoding the human arylsulfatase-A (ARSA) gene) is an investigational therapy being studied for the treatment of MLD in certain patients.
