Better education needed to give patients improved understanding of gene therapies, new review highlights – University of Birmingham

A new review of research bringing together patient, carer and public views of cell and gene therapies has highlighted a need for appropriate education to better inform people including how clinical trials work and the risks and benefits of various treatments.

Over the last decade, new cell, gene and tissue-engineered therapies have been developed to treat various cancers, inherited diseases and some chronic conditions. They offer opportunities for the treatment of disease and injury, to restore function, and in some cases offer cures. In response the NHS Advanced Therapies Treatment Centres (ATTCs) were set up to bring together the health service, academia and industry to address the unique and complex challenges of bringing these therapies to patients.

Led by experts from the Centre for Patient Reported Outcome Research (CPROR) at the University of Birmingham and the Midlands and Wales ATTC (MW-ATTC), the review, funded by a MW-ATTC grant from UK Research and Innovation is the first of its kind and the first to consider both patient and public opinions of cell and gene therapies. Examining 35 studies, the majority of which were published between 2015 and 2020, analysis showed that a lack of understanding of the aims of clinical trials and overestimation of the potential benefits of cell and gene therapy were common among both patients and the general public. Patients were generally of the opinion that more information about participating in clinical trials is vital to enable them to make informed assessment of potential risks and benefits.

Older, male patients with more severe underlying conditions and a greater risk of death tended to be more accepting of new approaches such as stem cell research and generally, while views of therapies varied among patients, the provision of adequate information increased acceptance.

Interestingly the review also found that patients considered their clinicians to be the most trustworthy source of information which would suggest that patients would approach and discuss these treatments with their physicians. However, researchers found that this might not always be the case due to a number of reasons including the perception that clinicians do not always approve of cell and gene therapies and may try to discourage them from pursuing treatment and may not have enough knowledge of the field to provide adequate advice.

Lead author Dr Olalekan Lee Aiyegbusi, Co-Deputy Director of the Centre for Patient Reported Outcomes Research (CPROR) said: The findings from this research are intended to inform the patient engagement work of the ATTCs. We hope that by highlighting various issues, efforts will be made to correct misconceptions, and improve the awareness of patients and the public about the potential benefits and risks associated with cell and gene therapies.

It is important that the public and patients are aware of these therapies, understand the issues involved, and can contribute to the ongoing debates. A high level of awareness will also enhance patients ability to make informed decisions about participating in clinical trials and routine administration of cell and gene therapies.

Sam Smith, a University of Colorado Boulder grad who is applying to medical schools, says he has been inspired by the example of health care workers during the pandemic. He plans to specialize in infectious diseases. "I want to be on the front lines of the next one," he says.

When COVID-19 restrictions reduced his work schedule at the National Institutes of Health, Sam Smith decided to turn to another time-consuming job: applying to medical school.

He'd always wanted to go into medicine, but what was happening in the world had a big impact on the kind of medicine he hopes to practice. Now Smith wants to specialize in infectious diseases.

The experience of the past year "makes me think, there's probably going to be another pandemic" in the future, said Smith, 25. "So I want to be on the front lines of the next one."

Even as college and university enrollment overall has dropped this fall, Smith is part of a wave of what officials say is a record number of applicants to medical school.

The number of applicants is up 18% this year over last year, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges, or AAMC, driven by the example of medical workers and public health figures such as Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

"It's unprecedented," said Geoffrey Young, the AAMC's senior director for student affairs and programs, who compares it to another response to a traumatic moment in American history: the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

"After [Sept. 11], there was a huge increase in the number of men and women that were entering into the military," Young said. "So far in my lifetime, at least, and for as long as I've been in medical education, that's the only comparison that I could make."

Stanford University School of Medicine reports a 50% jump in the number of applications, or 11,000 applications for 90 seats. Boston University School of Medicine says applications are up 27%, to 12,024 for about 110 seats.

"That, I think, may have a lot to do with the fact that people look at Anthony Fauci, look at the doctors in their community and say, 'You know, that is amazing. This is a way for me to make a difference,'" said Kristen Goodell, associate dean of admissions at the school of medicine at BU.

It's "very flattering," Fauci said. "Probably a more realistic assessment is that, rather than the Fauci Effect, it's the effect of a physician who is trying to and hopefully succeeding in having an important impact on an individual's health, as well as on global health. So if it works to get more young individuals into medical school, go ahead and use my name. Be my guest."

Among other reasons admissions officials cite for the increase in prospective medical students is that the pandemic has given people more free time to complete the arduous application process.

"A lot of the plans they made postgrad honestly fell through," said Sahil Mehta, a practicing radiologist and founder of MedSchoolCoach, which prepares students for the Medical College Admission Test, or MCAT.

When the dermatology practice where she was working as a medical assistant shut down temporarily because of COVID-19, Mary Grace Kelley had the chance to retake the MCAT and improved her score.

"This is a perfect time of no distractions," said Kelley, 23, who lives in the Boston suburbs and is applying to medical schools this year.

The deluge of applications comes as the nation faces a projected shortage of physicians.

The United States will be short 54,100 to 139,000 physicians by 2033, the AAMC estimates. More than two out of every five doctors now practicing will reach retirement age over the next 10 years.

Thirty-five percent of registered voters in a survey last year said they'd had trouble finding a doctor, up from 25% in 2015.

Medical school graduates finish with a staggering $241,560 of student loan debt, on average, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, discouraging many would-be doctors.

Eight percent of medical students are Black and 7% Hispanic, both proportions smaller than their share of the population. (Ten percent identify themselves as multiracial.)

"I do think that the debt probably scares off some people," said Goodell, who is also a former chair of the Council on Graduate Medical Education.

This year's many medical school applicants appear undeterred.

"Everyone feels some sort of responsibility," Kelley said. "There's definitely a call to arms thinking that, if there's another pandemic, it'll be up to us."

Fauci said he sees the flood of medical school applicants as a sign that people are thinking about social justice "that you have responsibility not only to yourself, but as an integral part of society."

He said he hopes the trend will counterbalance and "maybe would even overcome the other side of the coin, which is the really somewhat stunning and disturbing fact that people have no regard at all for society, only just focusing very selfishly on themselves."

DULUTH, MN -- While many are being asked to stay home because of the pandemic, others are headed to the front lines.

Medical schools across the country have seen a huge spike in applicants, including in Duluth.

Applications for the University of Minnesota Medical School, Duluth Campus increased 77 percent this year.

3,422 people applied for the Duluth campus program, which can take 65 in this cohort.

At the University of Minnesota Medical School's Twin Cities campus, applications went up by 40 percent.

With the added attention on healthcare workers during the pandemic, some are calling this increase the Fauci Effect," in reference to infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Dr. Kendra Nordgren, Assistant Dean for Admissions at the University of Minnesota Medical School, Duluth Campus said the pandemic has created an opportunity for people to pivot from their former career to the medical field.

"Seeing physicians and health care workers is showing them the connection that they can have to community and patients in a way they aren't experiencing in whatever trajectory they're currently on," Nordgren said.

Shane Johannsen first applied to medical school two years ago but did not get accepted. He is currently a medical assistant and EMT.

Johannsen works closely with COVID-19 patients and sees the need caused by the pandemic.

"This is the time to do it," Johannsen said. "This is what I want to do, and I want to become a doctor."

Johannsen decided to reapply to medical school and, weeks ago, found out he had been accepted to the 2021 program.

Johannsen said he is not the only one applying.

"They see all over the media. They say, 'Hey, we need doctors, we need nurses, we need physicians' assistants, we need all these different aspects.' It really just lets people know this is the time to do it. This is when we need it the most," he said.

Nordgren said the attention on healthcare workers is also encouraging non-traditional students to apply.

"Seeing the work that's being put out there and recognized is helping drive this influx," she said.

While being on the frontlines is difficult work, Johannsen is ready to answer the call.

"This is where I belong," he said. "This is what I want to do, and I think a lot of people feel the same way."

Survey results show that the majority of medical school admission officers have made their admission process more flexible because of the impacts of COVID, but it hasnt made the process any less competitive.

The survey was conducted by Kaplan, a corporation that provides educational services to students and universities. It showed 93% of medical school admission officers and teams made their admissions process more flexible because of the pandemic.

Petros Minasi, the senior director of pre-health programs for Kaplan, said the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) score submission deadline has been extended to January 2021 for people wanting to attend in the fall. Usually the test is taken in the spring; however, it was not being administered at all in May due to lockdowns.

Savanah Hardcastle, a BYU senior who took the MCAT this summer, said the first big change was the MCAT test dates getting pushed back. She said the normal timeline is to take the test in April or May and then start on your primary application.

So that was tricky because it was really hard to focus on the application while studying for the MCAT. So my application process kind of got pushed back as well because its hard to do both, Hardcastle said.

Medical schools have also accommodated for limited clinical and volunteer hours caused by social distancing regulations.

Traditionally pre-meds would say, I want to become a doctor, Im going to go volunteer at a hospital so I can shadow some physicians and see the clinical setting in person. Well right now, hospitals, for the most part, want to limit the number of people, Minasi said.

Hardcastle said she wasnt able to do many shadowing hours in hospitals because of COVID. She said this gave her and other students the opportunity to get creative with other ways to serve the community.

I was able to get some of the young women in my ward who I also served with as a young womens leader to help me make a heart with phrases of love and encouragement. And then we pasted the hearts on the windows of the old folks home, Hardcastle said.

Medical schools are also accepting pass/fail grades for pre-requisite courses, which has not been the case in the past. Minasi said they will most likely allow pass/fail courses for some time due to the impact of COVID.

Another significant change has been the interview process for potential medical school students. Medical school interviews are normally in person, but this year schools had to adjust and many did virtual tours or campus walks, Minasi said.

According to the University of Utah School of Medicine admissions overview, because of COVID and local and state health guidelines, interviews would be virtual for the 2020-2021 application cycle.

Minasi said although there has been a lot of changes, the medical school admissions process is not getting any easier.

The accommodations have made it possible, and maybe more accessible, for applicants to continue the process despite the impacts of COVID. The Association of American Medical Colleges released a report showing the number of applicants is 17% higher than usual.

Were already seeing in this 2020 application year, an increase as far as the number of applicants. What were not seeing is an increase in the number of first year medical school seats. So its very possible that this year will actually be more competitive than others, Minasi said.

It may come as a surprise that medical school applications have surged in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. That information was outlined by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) in an October report.

The report states, At Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, applications for admission to the class of 2025 are up more than 35% compared to the same time last year. At Boston University School of Medicine, theyve risen by 26%. And at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, admissions officers have seen applications increase by 27%.

To further emphasize, the report says, In the past decade, the year-over-year increase has averaged less than 3%.

The number of applications submitted already shows a significant increase compared to the same time in 2019, according to Fox 7 News.

So far, there are more than 7,500 additional applicants nationwide, according to data from the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS), which processes submissions for most U.S. medical schools. Thats an increase of nearly 18%, according to AAMC.

Weve been experiencing a leveling off in recent years, so the large increase was quite surprising, said Gabrielle Campbell, AAMC chief services officer. Its also inspiring. In the past decade, the year-over-year increase has averaged less than 3%.

Why the increase? Some reports, as well as several of our member medical schools admission staff, according to a AAMC spokesperson, refer to the increased interest to work in the medical field as the Fauci effect, named after the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Dr. Anthony Fauci.

AAMC speculates that some of the motivation is related to the coronavirus pandemic that brought forth the heroism that front-line healthcare workers have shown throughout the world.

So many people have seen that different groups in our country are facing such different effects from COVID-19 based on their ZIP code or their race. This year, applicants are motivated to get out there and fix societal problems, said Kristen Goodell, MD, associate dean of admissions at Boston University School of Medicine.

One would surmise that witnessing all the responsibility, stress and daunting experiences would have the opposite reaction and lower the appeal of entering the healthcare profession.

Geoffrey Young, Ph.D., AAMC senior director for student affairs and programs explains it this way, I make an analogy to the time after 9/11, when we saw an increase in those motivated to serve this country militarily. This certainly seems like a significant factor this year.

Young also gives a few more explanations to the phenomenon, We cant say for sure why so many more students have applied this year. Some students may have had more time for applications and preparing for the MCAT exam after their college courses went online. Some may have been motivated by seeing heroic doctors on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. There may be other explanations as well.

We survey incoming medical school students every year and will be able to learn more about why this group of students decided to apply, though we wont have that data until next year, Young went on to say.

UT Health Austin and Dell Medical School among first facilities in Texas to receive COVID-19 vaccine – Community Impact Newspaper

Distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine is set to begin in Texas Dec. 14, according to the Department of State Health Services. The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention have allocated 1.4 million initial doses of the vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech to Texas. Of those 1.4 million, the state has a plan to allocate more than 224,000 doses to 109 health care institutions the week of Dec. 14 for frontline health care workers. Eleven facilities in Central Texas are slated to receive a total of 16,575 doses in the initial shipment.

Facilities in the states four largest cities will be first to receive the vaccine Dec. 14, including UT Health Austin and Dell Medical School at the University of Texas, DSHS confirmed. The other three facilities receiving doses are Wellness 360 at UT Health San Antonio, the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and Methodist Dallas Medical Center.

An additional 19 facilities are set to receive their first doses of the vaccine Dec. 15. The remaining 86 institutions tabbed to accept initial shipments would then receive their first doses later in the week. MINNEAPOLIS, MN (WCCO) More time at home this year has apparently given people more time to fill out graduate school applications.

The number of medical school applicants is up 18% nationally compared to last year, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges.

At the University of Minnesotas Medical School, the surge is even more pronounced.

Dimple Patel, an associate dean of admissions for the school, says applications are up 40% at the Twin Cities campus. Theyre up 77% at the Duluth campus.

All of the many issues related to the pandemic have motivated young people to make decisions about their career and commit to applying to medical school, she said.

Rahi Patel, no relation to Dimple Patel, is a University of Minnesota junior on a pre-med track. She says everything thats happened this year has only cemented her feelings about applying next summer.

You see on the TV the healthcare workers and its obviously really taking a toll, but I think it also just underscores how important they are and the impact that they have, Rahi Patel said. Ive always wanted to be a part of that.

Dimple Patel says she sees the pandemic, and issues of health equity and social justice, mentioned in application essays she reads.

She also says a tough job market can lead to more people seeking out postgrad opportunities.

The elevated profile this year of science and medicine in general helps too.

Dr. Anthony Fauci has become a national figure with his own bobblehead.

In Minnesota, Dr. Michael Osterholm has also become well-known. The University of Minnesota professor is advising President-elect Joe Biden on COVID.

Having Dr. Osterholm being on virtually every news channelreally gets the word of how public health tries to be at that front end, said Laura Fyfe with the University of Minnesotas Pre-Health Student Resource Center.

Even though it could mean more competition for Rahi when she eventually applies, she says its great more people want to pursue medicine.

The demand is going to go up and weve seen the need for healthcare workers now, she said.

Jeff Teague takes a crash course in chemistry – Boston Herald

Jeff Teague was attracted to the Celtics, in part, because of the opportunity to play with one of the NBAs great young twosomes.

But the veteran point guard doesnt have a lot of time to mesh with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown or, for that matter, Marcus Smart and Daniel Theis.

With the first exhibition game three days away in Philadelphia, all are scrambling for a groove. Tristan Thompson, according to Brad Stevens, may not even be available by the regular season opener on Dec. 23 due to lingering hamstring trouble.

And none of it is helped by this cram session of a training camp. The process admittedly hasnt been smooth for Teague.

Its a little difficult, because we cant spend as much time together because of certain rules, Teague said during a Saturday Zoom session. Its going fast, and we dont have as much time to jell as we would in a normal offseason. Usually guys come in, play pickup and things like that, and you get to know someone on and off the court. Right now its a crash course. The good thing about this team is they have a really good nucleus, and Im just trying to fit in and figure it all out.

Another orientation is set for January, when Kemba Walker is expected to return from a knee rehab project. Until then, much will fall on Walkers backup.

Weve got a lot of great guys, a lot of talented players, and its going to be a wholeteam effort not having a guy like that right now, a dynamic point guard like that, so I guess well figure it out, said Teague, who has found a particularly receptive audience in Tatum and Brown.

They do a great job of listening, he said. They take advice and its a back-and-forth thing. I know how talented they are and how much they mean to the team, so I just try to give my pointers where I can. If I see something, I try to let them know what I see, and vice versa if they see something, they let me know.

But youve got to find your role, and for them, theyre going to be here for years to come. I just got to find ways to help them be better, and obviously theyre going to help me be better. But thats one thing just trying to help them be the players that they can be and this team to be the team that they can be. And it should be a great year.

Teague also has a varied group of big men to learn and blend with.

Ive played with a lot of talented bigs. Youve just got to figure out the person, he said. Figuring out that you throw the ball up to Rob (Wiliams) because hes an athletic big, he goes and gets it. Theis, you can play different ways on him. And obviously with Tacko (Fall), you want to make sure you throw the ball up. But you learn each other. You figure it out where guys are comfortable catching the ball. Its going to be a work in progress. Were still a team thats trying to figure it out right now. Weve got some time to try to get it right before our first game, but were still working.

Scientists have broken the rules of enzyme engineering to unlock a new method for creating chemical reactions that could unlock a wide range of new applications from creating new drugs to food production.

In their paper published recently in Nature Catalysis, Professor Francesca Paradisi and Dr. Martina Contente of the University of Nottingham and the University of Bern show a new method to produce chemical molecules more efficiently through a new one step reaction in the enzyme.

We have demonstrated how a very simple mutation in one of the key residues of a useful enzyme has dramatically expanded its synthetic scope, enabling the use of the mutant variant in the preparation of challenging chemical molecules, as well as natural metabolites that are vital in many biological processes in the body.

Any textbook on enzymes will report on how the catalytic amino acids in any given enzyme family are highly conserved, they are in fact a signature of the type of chemistry an enzyme can do. Variations do occur and in some cases, if the replacing amino acid is similar, both can be found in significant proportion in Nature, but others can be much less common and are found only in a limited number of species.

In this study we have explored an untouched area of enzyme engineering and modified the a key catalytic residue in the active site of an enzyme adds Professor Paradisi, Previously it was thought that doing this would cause a loss of activity of the enzyme but we have found this is not the case when this biocatalyst is used in a synthetic direction and in fact challenging but very useful molecules can now be made under mild conditions which could be easily scaled up and replicated commercially for use in a wide range of products.

To change the substrate scope of an enzyme the approach has generally been to mutate the residues involved in substrate recognition, whether through rational design or directed evolution, leaving always untouched the catalytic ones.

The mutant variant of an acyl transferase enzyme was rapidly created and while the native biocatalyst would work with alcohols and linear amines, the mutant work with thiols and much more complex amines too. The research demonstrated that indeed the new variant has lost the ability to hydrolyse esters, but for synthetic applications, where an ester or other functional groups need to be made (thioesters and amides) and not cleaved, this is in fact a major advantage.

We have had fantastic feedback on this study from the scientific community as it is providing a new tool for chemistry that can be applied to a wide range of molecular reactions. The fact that it is a very stable reaction created without the need for specific conditions mean it has the potential for a low cost commercial application in the production of new pharmaceuticals. We believe we have unlocked a new combination in the catalytic triads which nature seem to have disfavoured, possibly to tighten the control on reactivity, but that for a chemist could be a real goldmine.

ANDREW CLARKE closely guards his recipe for yolk-coloured ink, known in the trade as a yellow 13. But the process is simple enough. Powdery pigment is mixed with solvent, varnish and thickener, many of the supplies imported from abroad, and then milled between steel rollers into a glossy syrup. His factory in Yorkshire specialises in bespoke orders for coatings used to make food cartons, magazines and circuit boards. His small laboratory is lined with pots of resins and wetting agents, and machines that measure the fineness and viscosity of his creations.

Brexit, which comes into full effect on January 1st, worries Mr Clarke. The European chemicals market is fragmenting. He fears the substances that give his coatings their distinctive qualities may slowly disappear from sale in Britain, leaving him reliant on inferior substitutes. If we are trying to sell to Europe, we might be offering our best stuff, but an EU competitor could come in using the state-of-the-art raw material, which in our customers eyes is significantly better, he says.

The future of the British chemicals industry is Brexit in microcosm. Boris Johnson wants a trade deal that eliminates all tariffs on goods, including chemicals. Yet even if he gets this, it will do little to soothe the headaches that arise from leaving the single market. A project that promised to throw off the EUs system of regulation will instead replicate it in miniature, creating a Brussels-on-Thames. Chemical firms, foreign airlines, lawyers and internet companiesall will face new burdens if they wish to keep doing business in Britain.

At root is a grand misunderstanding. Brexiteers often think of the EUs single market as a mere rule book. Thus, they suggest, Britain simply needs to copy those rules into domestic law, and then tweak them at leisure. But the single market is better thought of as an ecosystem: an elaborate regime of registration, surveillance and enforcement. Goods and services percolate freely across national borders because governments can rely on Brussels to keep watch for unwanted adulterations.

Reach, the bit of the single market governing chemicals, is especially strict. Firms selling into Europe must submit lengthy dossiers detailing how their products were made, and appoint an agent on European soil, who can be collared if things go wrong. The system is overseen by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in Helsinki, which has 600 staff and a budget of more than 100m ($120m). The enforcement is done by a network of national agencies, such as Britains Health and Safety Executive (HSE), based in Liverpool. The result is a free-flowing pool of 23,000 chemicals for Mr Clarke and his continental rivals to choose from, underpinned by a vast database of safety information which regulators can scour for risks.

Theresa May, Mr Johnsons predecessor, asked to stay in Reach, having been convinced there was little to gain from divergence. But this was rejected by the EU, who called it cherry-picking. So Britain will try to replicate the regime at home, under the title of UK Reach. The names of chemicals originally registered by British companies will be copied into domestic law. The HSE will take on the ECHAs job, funded by fees on users. European companies will need a legal footprint to trade in Britain, and British companies vice versa.

The most difficult task will be replicating the ECHAs database. Ministers at first insisted they could simply copy-and-paste it. They could not: it is stuffed with commercially-sensitive intellectual property, and there is little incentive to give a departing state a leg-up. The EU has so far rebuffed Britains request for a chemicals data-sharing clause in the trade deal.

Instead, the government will require Mr Clarkes suppliers to submit the data themselves. But many dossiers were produced by consortia of companies, and there is little reason for a French firm to bail out a British rival. BASF, a big German chemicals firm, reckons registering with UK Reach will cost them 70m ($90m). Small British distributors whose continental suppliers file paperwork under the EU system may find themselves designated importers. One boss calculates a bill of 1m in registration fees if he has to lodge all the substances he imports, on an annual turnover of 15m: Wed be bankrupt in a week.

George Eustice, the environment secretary, now admits some firms may find the task both expensive and time-consuming, and this summer delayed the timetable for lodging dossiers for some products from 2023 to 2027. But more time does not help much, says Peter Newport of the Chemicals Business Association. Its a change from a guillotined beheading to a death by a thousand cuts over a six-year timescale, he sighs.

There are two scenarios for how this will play out. One is that ministers push on with UK Reach, and substances are pulled from the British market as manufacturers conclude that registration costs make low-volume products unviable. The so-called salt-and-pepper additives used in tiny quantities in paints are particularly vulnerable. The flow going the other way is already shrinking. Only 70% of the British firms that registered chemicals with the ECHA before Brexit have started transferring their dossiers to new legal entities in Europe, the regulator notes. Well become very insular, and theyll become equally self-absorbed, says Mr Clarke. As a result, Britain would be a less attractive place to open an assembly line.

The second scenario is that UK Reach founders. The deadlines could be pushed back further, or the new rules left unenforced. With an empty database, says Michael Warhurst of CHEM Trust, an environmental charity, the regulator in Liverpool would be less able than the one in Helsinki to spot hazards, or to defend its decisions against deep-pocketed companies in court.

The promise of Brexit was that Britain would be the master of its own regulation, acting more nimbly or stringently than the EU if it wished. But the outcome Mr Warhurst fears would not be deregulation by design, but one forced upon ministers because their ambitions to match European standards have failed. A big market means Brussels can afford to be strict in its regulation. Britain will learn that it cannot.

Seth Curry already seeing Sixers’ chemistry come together in practice – Sixers Wire

The Philadelphia 76ers are a brand new team and they have to work through a lot of changes in a short amount of time before the 2020-21 season. They have a brand new supporting cast around their star duo and brand new coaching staff.

The team only has a few weeks to get everything sorted out before the season begins on Dec. 23 against the Washington Wizards. Considering the team had a normal offseason in 2019 after they made plenty of changes to the roster and they had chemistry issues, one could be concerned about this current group.

However, there does not appear to be those same issues as the team moves forward.

You got a good group of guys who like each other, said Seth Curry, one of those new additions. That goes a long way on the floor as far as enjoying being around each other in the gym. I think were appreciating a little bit more actually being in the gym after that long layoff earlier in the year. Obviously, with COVID and all that, guys arent taking practices for granted, I know Im not.

Coach Doc Rivers noticed a different spirit in the gym on Sunday as the team prepares to get preseason going on Tuesday against the Boston Celtics. That is a good thing to hear for a very talented team that only has so much time to figure it all out.

It was great practice, said Rivers. I thought maybe one of our better ones, great energy. Guys are starting to get it. Were a long way away from that. Both ends of the floor, just a lot of good energy.

Chemistry is such an underrated and important aspect for any basketball team. It is important that these guys come together and establish some type of connection as it will make things that much easier when it comes to playing on the floor.

Im enjoying coming in and being around the fellas and working on our games, Curry added. I think we also got a good group of vets here that are wishing the younger guys and playing their role so its an exciting time for all of us.

Chemical Industry Outlook: Recovery From The COVID-19 Global Recession – PRNewswire

WASHINGTON, Dec. 9, 2020 /PRNewswire/ --U.S. chemical production is regaining momentum after coping with supply disruptions, falling demand and shrinking revenue linked to the global COVID-19 pandemic, according to the American Chemistry Council (ACC)'s Year-End 2020 Chemical Industry Situation and Outlook. With the recovery that began in Q3 firmly in place and improvement in many key chemistry-consuming industries, the outlook is positive.

At the start of 2020, U.S. chemistry faced headwinds including a global manufacturing slowdown, protectionist trade policies and uncertainty about the upcoming U.S. elections. As the business effects of the pandemic took hold, chemical production fell. Motor vehicle production plummeted along with supply chain output. Housing showed strong gains due to shifting patterns of remote work and record-low interest rates. Most other end-use segments declined, partially offset by demand for chemistries used to make items used in the response to the pandemic.

"American chemistry is playing a vital role in the global fight against COVID-19, providing inputs for personal protective equipment, disinfection and sanitation products, medical supplies and equipment, protective barriers, and plastic packaging, among others," said Kevin Swift, ACC chief economist and Outlook co-author. In March, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security identified the chemical sector and its workers as 'Essential Critical Infrastructure.'

During 2020, performance among chemical sectors was mixed. Plastic resins was the only segment to post positive growth, due to its role in COVID-related solutions. Other basic chemical segments declined, especially synthetic rubber a key ingredient in tire manufacturing. Specialty chemicals saw demand falter across nearly all functional and market segments. ACC expects a fairly significant rebound in 2021.

"The post-pandemic outlook is for broad-based growth in chemicals supported by solid fundamentals," said Martha Moore, senior director of policy analysis and economics at ACC and co-author of the Outlook. "Growing customer demand, stabilizing export markets, and a competitive edge linked to domestic supplies of shale gas and natural gas liquids (NGLs) are among the factors pointing to continued gains in U.S. chemistry."

Total chemical production volume excluding pharmaceuticals fell by 3.6 percent in 2020 and is expected to grow by 3.9 percent in 2021 and 2.7 percent in 2022. Basic chemicals production fell 1.3 percent in 2020 and is projected to grow by 5.0 percent in 2021 and 3.2 percent in 2022.

U.S. GDP tumbled 3.8 percent during 2020, down from a 2.3 percent gain in 2019. As the global economy recovers from the pandemic-induced recession, U.S. growth is expected to rebound 3.7 percent in 2021 and 3.2 percent in 2022, led by stronger consumer spending. Industrial production fell 6.9 percent in 2020, with declines occurring in nearly every sector. Industrial production is expected to rise 3.7 percent in 2021 and 3.5 percent in 2022. Growth is anticipated for nearly all industries, with the largest gains occurring in motor vehicles, aerospace, appliances, iron and steel, petroleum refining, and plastic and rubber products.

Automotive and building and construction are important end-use markets for chemistry. Production of light vehicles was very strong during 2015-19, averaging nearly 17 million units per year. Sales are expected to average only 14.4 million in 2020. A V-shaped recovery has begun, and sales are expected to rise to 16.0 million in 2021. The consensus outlook is for sales to improve further and remain at elevated levels over the next several years.

The consensus outlook for housing is for a gain to 1.34 million units this year as many households move to less densely populated areas, followed by modest progress through 2025. Household formations are supportive, as are job and income gains in the long-term. Low mortgagerates have provided some stimulus. Shortages of labor and available lots are constraining the pace of growth, however. Housing starts are set to edge higher to 1.38 million in 2021 and 1.36 million in 2022.

U.S. chemicals trade will be notably lower in 2020, and it will be a year or two before total trade flows return to pre-COVID levels. Total chemicals trade is projected to shrink 7 percent to $220.8 billion in 2020, then recover to $240 billion in 2021. Exports will fall 9 percent to $124.0 billion in 2020 before expanding to $134.5 billion in 2021. Imports will fall 5 percent to 96.8 billion in 2020, then recover to $105.5 billion in 2021. The chemicals trade outlook is linked to the shape of the manufacturing recovery, trade policy, and the course of COVID-19. Potential changes in global supply chains could affect international trade levels longer-term.

Dolphins continue to build team chemistry while adding to their win column – WMBB – mypanhandle.com

LYNN HAVEN, Fla. (WMBB) The Mosley boys basketball team opened the year by losing two games at a tournament in central Florida.

However, the Dolphins said they were just getting to know each other at the tournament with the football players not joining them at practice until later November.

Starting the season on the road down there in Wildwood with those guys not having any practices under their belt, were still trying to find out who we are and what our identity is, Mosley head boys basketball coach Michael Memmen said.

Once the Dolphins returned home, they beat South Walton, a win that built their confidence.

Once we won that first game, then we won that second game, we realized we could be winners, Mosley boys basketball player Chase McCarter said.

Mosley then beat Bay by one point and Arnold by three in their following two games.

Its exciting, its scary in the moment too because you dont know whats gonna happen until the buzzer goes off, Mosley boys basketball player Jake Piorkowski said.

As long as we keep moving forward in the right direction, I think well be able to be where we need to be, come February, Memmen said.

Memmen said his team has a goal to become the first Mosley boys team to go to the state playoffs three years in a row and become the first team to win a playoff game for the program in several years.

I believe the last time Mosley won a playoff game was 2007 or 08, but Mosley has never been to the playoffs three years in a row, and thats something they want to accomplish, Memmen said.

Next up for the 3-2 Dolphins is a game at Marianna on Monday night.

Just keep watching us were gonna get better from here were excited to play Marianna Monday its gonna be a good game, Piorkowski said.

Steph Curry admitted that it will take time to find chemistry with his new Golden State Warriors teammates following their opening preseason game on Saturday night.

"Honestly, I don't know because I've had a solid, consistent core. I think from Monday to now we're starting to talk about some of the patterns and some of the things that I'm used to, especially if I give up the ball.

"And knowing where open spots on the floor are. It will come. I don't know what the specific answer to the question is, but it will come. ... It's just one of those things where you have to continue to communicate," said Curry.

Curry had 10 points on 3-of-10 shooting from the field.

Steve Kerr added that the new Warriors will have to get used to Curry's unique style.

"I think with most players who come in, they're not used to the second half of the possession. They're sort of used to whatever the pattern is in the beginning. But as soon as maybe Steph gives up the ball, that's when the action really starts the way we play. And that's the tricky part for guys to figure out."
