The cherry tree in my front yard was bare when the pandemic began. It blossomed in May when it felt important to think it would all be over soon. I hosted near daily distanced visits with friends on my porch, sipping coffee under its defiantly vibrant pink and white flowers. My lover, an essential worker, made a plastic contraption so that we could hug.

When the blossoms fell later in summer, and the cherries grew Viva-Glam red, passersby filled their pockets. When they bruised purple and burst rotten, the COVID-19 numbers sunk to single digits. My lover and I got tests that we waited only twenty minutes in line for, with negative results in less than 12 hours. Then we went to the beach for a week.

While swimming in Sandy Lake, near Lakefield, the water glowed a type of turquoise Id only ever seen in the Caribbean Sea, an illusion from its shallow, sandy base. We bought roadside corn and cozied up in a rented cabin. We felt normal. The only issue was wed gotten so used to sleeping alone that we lay awake at night unsure how to handle the closeness of another person.

But I now think of August with a tender nostalgia normally reserved for college drug trips and poetic, pre-Internet love affairs. Because now the tree branches on my street are bare again, and it is just me for lockdown round two. I knew it was coming but knowing ahead of time isnt always as soothing as youd expect.

A few years ago, while promoting my last novel, I told a Macleans magazine journalist that my singular goal was to be able to spend every day writing in a room by myself. In the photo they used for the article I am sitting on my ex-partners red couch, looking out the window of our shared home. You can see a hole in my cardigan that I didnt realize was there. A shoddy, hack detail that nonetheless nails quite symbolically the state of my life at the time the photo was taken. But in 2020 I have an entire apartment in which to be alone, writing, every day of this sickly slog of a year. I know that I am extremely lucky. But perhaps I should have been more specific and ambitious with my aspirations.

I begin every pandemic day by playing phone Boggle with my friend Matt. I am terrible at it. I dont even scroll to the stats page to glimpse the tally of how many times he has beaten me anymore. One would think Boggle would be a suitable game for writers, but winning is less about being a wordsmith and more about spatial intelligence, of which I have very little. But accepting a small, insignificant daily loss while connecting to a friend has become a pleasant routine, and in keeping with the larger themes of 2020.

Like most people, Ive had several big losses in 2020, too depressing to write about, and I would prefer not to.

The act of rereading, rewatching, playing a repetitive game, or doing any activity that runs lightly over existing neural pathways, has in itself become routine for me. (I reread Herman Melvilles short story Bartleby: The Scrivener one day when I could not take in anything new. It still, as the kids say, slaps.) Now, I prefer reruns of shows like Greys Anatomy, whose predictable moralism and inane expository dialogue feels like a comforting hug when a real one is forbidden. Which is good for self-care, but bad for art.

What literature is going to come from this moment of pause? From this collective fear? Its a curious question to ponder in the semi-final stages of preparing a book manuscript, especially since everything I write about is, at its core, about anxiety. With this new book I found myself shifting the story to stagnant places. Why should my protagonist have an emotional arc, when that idea seems from the Before Times? Why are these crazy people I invented in 2018 allowed to kiss?

But Proust wrote In Search of Lost Time in bed, did he not? I ask my kitten, who responds by climbing me like a tree with his little knife hands.

To write well one must have a flourishing inner life, an ability to sink deep into an esthetic project and live in that pretend world. But for me it also helps to have real connections to the present moment. I palm handfuls of potting soil, trying to keep a geranium alive that my kitten insists on hollowing out every morning, because he knows it will rouse me, usually from a nightmare about standing in a crowd without a mask. (This dream has replaced the one about having to go back to high school naked.) My hands in the soil feels grounding, but sometimes I rarely speak for days, and connections to voice and spoken language fray, which can fracture a relationship with the present moment.

For example, the other day I blurted out something personal about my diet to my barista, because shed noticed Id changed my order. She is the one person I speak aloud to every day, so perhaps the misfire was appropriate. A comedy sketch aired that I wrote for The Baroness von Sketch Show about the daily emotional arithmetic of being an introvert. And while it did I texted a friend about how I longed to be dancing, sweaty, arms-raised and hair swinging loosely back and forth, bookended by strangers. Is COVID-19 going to make me over as a bubbly extrovert, ready to network my way back into an in-person career?

But there is something about this time that feels familiar. I grew up on a farm in the 70s and 80s, a time when childhood was largely unstructured, and my brother and I were encouraged to be imaginative and independent. Sometimes I catch myself staring out my window, watching my city-faced neighbours like a TV show, the way I used to watch the worms in our driveway, or the sheep in the pasture when I was a child, when the pace of life was slow and real TV was forbidden.

I chat late into the night with my friend Dean in Iowa about our broken hearts and screenplay ideas. I make plans to meet a couple in Philadelphia Ive only met over Zoom, but who fill the interstitial moments of my work day with warmth and connection. My writer friend Jen in Vancouver sent me beautiful skin care products to soothe my broken heart. A friend from Instagram sent me brownies, another few sent flowers and cards when they knew I was grieving. No one is exactly OK, but we are finding what comfort we can this way, and for those of us who live alone, it feels life-saving.

So I encourage you to scroll your Netflix re-watch list or thumb through that well-worn paperback novel, play a losing game of Boggle, send some roses to your Instagram friend whose dog videos make you smile, send a hug emoji to the group text, and in the immortal words of the prophets vocal group Wilson Phillips, hold on for one more day.

Debbie Allen on Dance Dreams, Grey’s Anatomy, & the Power of Legacy – Coveteur

The icon chatted with Coveteur about her career, the cultural relevance of Greys Anatomy, and her hopes for the future of the Debbie Allen Dance Academy.

Growing up as a dancer, Ive always thought of the dance world as having four wonders: Katherine Dunham, Alvin Ailey, Josephine Baker, and Debbie Allen. Throughout my 24 (nearly 25 in a few weeks) years of living, I can confidently say that my mother has always made sure I was up to snuff on the legend that was Debbie Allen. As a choreographer, actress, director, producer, and Emmy award-winning phenomenon, Allen has been making more than an impact to match her legacy on the world of arts, television, and film that contribute to Black culture far beyond the 1980s. And as a die-hard fan of A Different World, honorary member of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, and Black girl dancer, interviewing Debbie Allen was an honor and privilege.

On a Wednesday afternoon, I joined the conference line to await the voice of Ms. Allen herself. Hi, DShonda! she said, filled with joy at nearly 9:00 AM in the morning. I had no idea thereafter that every word with the Fame actress and principal choreographer would be one for the books filled with wisdom and experience curated from her 40 years as a Black woman in Hollywood, a mother, sister, friend, and cultural icon.

As a woman with the world of performing arts at her fingertips, I absolutely had to ask her about how her mental health was being managed during the pandemic. She burst into laughternot in a condescending why would you ask me that type of tone, but laughing at the current state of the world and having to work around it. Im sorry, I had to laugh. I dont have the luxury of doing anything else other than being mentally healthy. I dont have the luxury to go off the rails, so I dont even know what that means, she shared.

You would think that even during the pandemic, the legendary Allen would be able to take some time off to practice stillness. I guess when youve been working since 1970, the green light may be all youre accustomed to seeing, even when the world is on pause. Amidst the crazy election cycle finally winding down and the pandemic coming into a second wave, the Dancing in the Wings author let out a sigh before telling me about the relationship between her creativity and COVID-19.

Allen revealed that she had shut down the Debbie Allen Dance Academy on the same day that the set of Greys Anatomy shut down, but that didnt mean that the show was over. Everybody was in the office; we sent out letters, but I said were not gonna stop, she told Coveteur. While everyone was confused at first, Allen proposed virtual classes that would be announced on her Instagram account and immediately resume the following Wednesday. When she was challenged with the five Ws and how she would get it done, she responded, I dont know, but were doing it. And so she did.

Her first classes amassed over 35,000 virtual attendees worldwide with the assistance of managing producer Major King and development manager Haley Fonfa to figure out the technological aspect. Before we knew it, we were a Zoom studio and we didnt even know what that meant, she admitted. Over the course of the summer, shes had over 250 students in her summer intensive program from all over the world including Brazil, Germany, and Australia.

Growing up, Allen was born in segregated Houston and was the third child to an orthodontist and a Pulitzer Prize-nominated poet, artist, and scholar, but she knew that her dreams were far bigger than Texas alone. Though the opportunities were slim pickings, her mother, Vivian Allen, recognized the raw talents of Debbie and her sister, now Tony Awardwinning actress Phylicia Rashad, and made the executive decision to relocate the family to Mexico to further pour into Debbies dance passions.

At four years old, I knew it then, the Howard University graduate shared about when her passion for dance first started. I was running around my grandmothers living room and dancing to the radio. When we got a television, I would watch the musical films all Saturday morning, and I saw myself at four years old knowing thats what I wanted to do. And she knew she was destined for greatness from that point on. Allen was accepted into the Houston Ballet Foundation at 13 years old after having been rejected for six years, but the drive and tenacity required from her for the four years to follow would mold her into the dancer, choreographer, and cultural icon we know her as today.

After graduating from one of the top HBCUs in the country with a degree in theater, Allen went on to pursue a career on Broadway and landed roles as Anita in the 1980s West Side Story and Sweet Charity. To this day, we must recognize that without the great Debbie Allen, we would not have Famethe original and rebooted versionsA Different World, or the esteemed Debbie Allen Dance Academy. However, we would be remiss if we didnt pay homage to the five-time NAACP Image Award recipients achievements as a director, producer, and actress on ABCs groundbreaking hit medical drama series Greys Anatomy.

Ive been really busy, and certainly, putting Greys Anatomy back on its feet is a feat in itself, the Catherine Avery actress said. The meetings, the hours of Zoomoh my god. Hours and hours and hours, days and months of the protocols [on] how do we do it and be safe. Were in a war right now with this COVID, and it took a lot, but finally we figured it out and were doing it. Were lucky that weve been able to move forward and now were on our ninth week of shooting, she said before she interrupted and corrected herself.

No, actually, its been more than that. We started shooting September 8th, and its now November, so weve been doing it for two months and some change, Debbie said. My inner Greys Anatomy fan was geeked out to steer the conversation in the direction of this iconic show and her role in it as an actress and behind-the-scenes director.

Though most of us may think of Allens connection to Greys as Catherine Avery, what most may not know is that Shonda Rhimes hired Allen to serve as an executive producer and director in the twelfth season. This role was by far one of Allens most culturally shifting duties to date, including the responsibility of curating a coalition of directors every year, to which she solemnly swore to put women in the directors seat for at least half the episodes per season. In an effort to make women, both transgender and cisgender, seen in the entertainment industry, Allen has even given the chair to costar Ellen Pompeo, who plays Meredith Grey.

Greys Anatomy is not only recognized for being the longest-running prime-time medical drama in the country, but their cultural impact beyond television and film has touched women, minorities, LGBTQ+ people, and allies across the world. Thankfully, Allen has been able to be part of this family since 2011.

We are one of the most culturally relevant aspects of the American culture as we present ourselves to the world, and its very important that we tell our stories from our point of view that could only come from that, Allen said proudly about Greys position in entertainment telling the stories of Black America and the more recent pandemic outbreak. She continued to stress the importance of collaboration within entertainment for the betterment of the non-monolithic Black narrative by using the late Chadwick Bosemanstarring film as a prime example. Black Panther happened and it is a phenomenon, and Ryan Coogler directed it, who did Fruitvale Station. [We see] all of those young, beautiful people who are in that movie, and it was a production that came out of Disney. That is many different voices coming together that gave this one voice resonance that touched the entire world and touched the planet.

Allen recognizes the growth
, evolution, and change within the nature of the universe and encourages us to all be thankful for it as we witness the cultural growth off and on screen. When it came to the Hot Chocolate Nutcracker, Allen knew that she was taking something so traditional and conventional and transforming it into a phenomenon all her own that would give hope and representation for future generations. The kids have a sense of seeing themselvesthats everything. I can remember when I was a little kid, the only Black person on TV Id see was Leslie Uggams when I was a little bitty girl on something called Sing Along with Mitch. There was Diahann Carrolls Julia. We didnt see ourselves in those lead positions. We might be a maid or a chauffeur, but we werent the lead.

Fast-forward to 2020, Debbie Allen is the leading lady in her own Netflix documentary film, Dance Dreams: Hot Chocolate Nutcracker. Allen confessed that she founded the Debbie Allen Dance Academy in honor of her daughter Vivian Nixon. She needed somewhere else to go, and all these kids needed somewhere else to go where they could put their feet on the ground and have their cultural identity at the same time, she said. The film highlighting Debbie Allens iconic career, the reinvention and reimagination of Tchiacovksys original 1982 two-act ballet performance, and the inspirational students and instructors from DADA was executive-produced by a familiar face in the industrythe one and only Shonda Rhimes. This was totally Shonda Rhimes idea to put this on Netflix, she laughed as she passed off the credit to her Greys Anatomy family member.

She took it and shaped it into what it is now. She masterminded it becoming what it is, Allen praised Rhimes. Oliver Bokelberg shot it, Shonda took it to Netflix and reshaped it so its now something thats going to be in 180 different languages. The world will see these beautiful kids doing what they do bestjust learning, being disciplined, and onstage performingand what that means to them. Thats everything, and I think its inspirational. Did you find it inspirational when you watched it? she prompted me.

This interview had now become a full-blown conversation with Debbie Allen as I ensured her that my unique experience as a Black girl dancer from Brooklyn was paralleled to hers and the students who shared intimate interviews in Netflixs Dance Dreams. There you go, you understand it. Youll be able to write about it better than anything I could say, the icon said to me after I told her about the cultural messaging and unique position of herself and the Debbie Allen Dance Academy as an inspiration to myself and other young dancers of color around the world. Pinch me.

Before we parted ways, I asked her about her hopes for Hot Chocolate Nutcracker and the legacy she hopes it will leave for future generations. Were still in the making, so I cant think about leaving anything right now. Im thinking about building. Were in the middle of a capital campaign. Were gonna raise seven million dollars to finish this building, and it is for these children. This is a cultural center. Its gonna be called the Shonda Rhimes Performing Arts Center that houses the Debbie Allen Dance Academy and Debbie Allen Middle School. Im starting a school in the fall. Im in the building stages, so Im moving, she exclusively revealed about her forthcoming plans to pour into the younger generation with education, love, and empowerment. Allen ended our conversation with humility, grace, and a reminder that even at the age of 70 years old, she is only scratching the surface.

I am not thinking about legacy. Im too much in the building of going up right now. When you start talking about legacy, youre looking back like youve done it. Im just not there yet.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Never Should Have Brought Teddy Back – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Kim Raver debuted in the Greys Anatomy show in season 6 as a cardiothoracic and trauma surgeon. Later in season 8, she leaves indefinitely for Germany to work in the Army Medical Command.

Raver, who is referred to as Teddy Atman on the show, later returned on the show in season 14. However, her return displeases her fans, who are quite infuriated with her character when she returns. A fan commented on Reddit the following; Despite having other fascinating storylines, we only had to get Teddy back!

In Greys Anatomy, there is a lot of assumptions about Teddy and Owens relationship. The sparkle between the two is quite pronounced in season 14; Owen even follows Teddy to Germany. Their intimate relationship is almost predictable, but the accidental conceiving of a baby is something the fans didnt quite expect.

Although at first, the relationship seems healthy, things later turn sour on the two medics. Balancing between handling a toddler and an involving medical career becomes quite challenging for the two.

Later Teddy finds out that Amelia might have conceived Owens baby, which definitely wrecks her. In the strange turn of events, Teddy ends up confiding in her ex-boyfriend, Tom Koracick.

Teddy and Toms connection is obvious, and the two end up having an affair behinds Owens back. Later on, Teddy learns that the baby Amelia is carrying is not Owens, and she blames herself for having an affair.

In the episode Love of My Life, the Greys Anatomy show clearly reveals that Teddy is a peculiar woman. The back story on this episode portrays that Teddy was romantically involved with Allison, who later died in the terror attacks.

Coincidentally the love triangle between Allison and Teddy has some similarities to that of Teddy and Owen. In both relationships, three people are involved; in her first relationship, Claire was involved, while in the second, Tom is also involved.

In the same episode, we also learn that Teddy actually named her child after her lover, Allison. Fans think its weird and wrong naming her child after her allegedly best friend without informing Owen about the romantic involvement and attachment.

Fans can forgive Teddy for portraying impropriety in the show, but having an affair on the wedding eve is inexcusable. Making it worse, she accidentally recorded a voicemail during the intimate sessions for Owen. So, you can imagine the frustration Owen had to face before the proposed wedding on overhearing the encounter.

After having an affair, Teddy proceeded unapologetically and put on her wedding dress, awaiting her big moment, the wedding. The turn of events is ridiculous, and her character made fans displeased by her lack of empathy about Owens feelings.

In season 17, Owen confronts Teddy about the affair. In the uneasy conversation, Owen asks if there is anything she is hiding from him; he further professes that he trusts her and loves her. In this episode, we see that their relationship and friendship matters more to Owen, but Teddy is unbothered and continues to lie and have an affair.

As expected, Teddy denies hiding anything from Owen despite him probing for answers. Owen then takes out his phone and plays the sex voicemail Teddy accidentally left for him. Teddy is startled upon the revelation that Owen knows the truth.

She is confused about handling the situation, and the teary Owen leaves the room. Redeeming the dysfunctional relationship is almost impossible.

Renowned biochemist known for contributions to field of epigenetics

Benjamin Garcia, PhD, has been named head of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. His appointment is scheduled to begin July 1.

Benjamin A. Garcia, PhD, a noted leader in the field of biochemistry, especially for his work advancing mass spectrometry techniques, has been named head of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Garcia, whose appointment tentatively is set to begin July 1, also will become the Raymond H. Wittcoff Distinguished Professor.

The schools Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics has an illustrious history as home to some of the nations most distinguished scientists, including scientific innovator Roy Vagelos, who headed the department then called the Department of Biological Chemistry from 1966-75 and went on to lead the development of cholesterol-lowering statin drugs at Merck; and Nobel laureates Carl Cori and Gerty Cori, known for their work showing how muscles manufacture and store energy. Understanding this process shed light on treatments for diabetes.

Garcia comes to Washington University from the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, where he is the John McCrea Dickson, MD, Presidential Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, and director of quantitative proteomics.

Dr. Garcia was selected from an impressive pool of candidates and was unanimously endorsed as the most exceptional person to launch the next era of advancing knowledge and discovery in this vitally important department, said David H. Perlmutter, MD, executive vice chancellor for medical affairs, the George and Carol Bauer Dean of the School of Medicine, and the Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Distinguished Professor. We found ourselves energized by his vision for the department to continue to be at the forefront of the field and to leverage the breadth of collaborative opportunities within our biomedical research community. His personal research program, in proteomic analysis of epigenetic regulation, supports our long-term strategic institutional goal to transition our leadership in genomics into multi-omic systems medicine, which will serve as an engine producing the most imaginative approaches to personalized health care.

Garcias research has focused on developing new and advanced methods for using mass spectrometry and to analyze proteins called histones that help regulate DNA. Such analyses can shed light on basic biology and disease processes. His methods have revolutionized analysis of the proteins and genetics of cells from animal models and human samples. The research has led to important observations about the regulation of cell differentiation, growth of tissues, and the development of cancer. He has developed an extensive research network that has been supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) throughout his career. He is active in partnerships with industry, previously establishing a technology alliance partnership with Thermo-Fisher to develop advanced mass spectrometry instruments and methods.

After earning a bachelors degree from the University of California, Davis, Garcia pursued a doctorate in chemistry at the University of Virginia, where he had a specific interest in developing expertise in mass spectrometry, a technique used to analyze the sequence and composition of compounds and molecules, such as DNA. He continued his training with a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. In 2008, he joined the faculty of Princeton University in the Department of Molecular Biology and was later recruited to the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 2012.

Garcia also is known for his dedication to teaching, mentorship and increasing diversity in scientific research circles. He serves as vice chair for the biochemistry and molecular biophysics graduate program at Penn, a role that includes leadership in recruitment, outreach and promotion of diversity within the department. He also serves as chair of the University Council for Diversity and Equity at Penn and has developed strategies for attracting and supporting minority students into successful careers in science.

Garcia has been recognized for his research contributions with several honors including the NIH Innovator Award, the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the American Chemical Society Arthur F. Findeis Award, the Protein Societys Protein Science Young Investigator Award, the Human Proteome Organization Discovery in Proteomic Sciences Award and the prestigious American Society for Mass Spectrometry Biemann Medal, among numerous others.

He serves on the editorial boards of Molecular Omics, and the Journal of Proteome Research, and Molecular &Cellular Proteomics, and was formerly associate editor of BMC Genomics. He also served as chair of the Enabling Bioanalytical and Imaging Technology study section of the NIH and has served in other important national scientific leadership positions, including with the National Science Foundation Biological Science Advisory Committee, governing council for the World Human Proteome Organization, and board of directors for the U.S. Human Proteome Organization.

After leading the department for the past seven years, John A. Cooper, PhD, a professor of biochemistry & molecular biophysics, will step down from his position to focus on his laboratory research program.

We thank John Cooper for his exceptional, gracious and selfless leadership over the last seven years and through the remaining months of the coming academic year, Perlmutter said.

What dolphins can teach us about surviving COVID-19 – University of California

When Terrie Williams began hearing about the wide range of symptoms experienced by patients with COVID-19, she saw a connection between the various ways the disease is affecting people and the many physiological adaptations that have enabled marine mammals to tolerate low oxygen levels during dives.

Williams, a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at UC Santa Cruz, has spent decades studying the physiology of marine mammals and their extraordinary ability to perform strenuous activities while holding their breath for long periods under water.

Diving marine mammals experience a lifetime of rapid physiological transitions between normal oxygenation and hypoxia [low oxygen levels], Williams said. Theyve got ways to protect themselves and allow their organs to keep functioning while holding their breath for hours at a time, but theres a whole suite of biological adaptations that had to happen for them to be able to do that.

Lacking those adaptations, humans are vulnerable to rapid damage in a wide range of tissues when oxygen levels drop due to the effects on the lungs and cardiovascular system of infection with the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. In a review articlepublished December 3 inComparative Biochemistry and Physiology, Williams explores how the diving physiology of marine mammals can help us understand the effects of COVID-19.

It really highlights why it is so important for people to protect themselves from infection with this virus, she said. Damage to oxygen-deprived tissues happens fast and can be irreversible, which may account for the long-term effects we are beginning to see in people after coronavirus infections.

The heart and brain are especially sensitive to oxygen deprivation, and marine mammals have multiple mechanisms to protect these and other critical organs. In the first place, marine mammals have much higher oxygen carrying capacity than humans due to their greater blood volume and hemoglobin concentrations. In addition, some marine mammals contract their spleen during dives to release a store of oxygen-rich blood cells into the circulation. To avoid blood clots resulting from such high concentrations of red blood cells, many species lack a key clotting factor found in other mammals.

Other adaptations include greatly increased concentrations of oxygen-carrying proteins such as myoglobin in heart and skeletal muscles and neuroglobin and cytoglobin in the brain. In addition, numerous safety factors and biochemical buffers enable even the most oxygen-dependent tissues in marine mammals to withstand not only low oxygen but also the subsequent reperfusion of tissues with oxygenated blood. In humans, reperfusion after a heart attack or stroke often leads to additional tissue damage.

According to Williams, the solutions that marine mammals have evolved for tolerating hypoxia provide a natural template for understanding the potential for damage to oxygen-deprived tissues in humans.

Studying marine mammals allowed me to understand what it takes to protect the body when the availability of oxygen is low, she said. There are so many ramifications of shutting down the oxygen pathway, and I think thats what were seeing in these COVID patients.

Williams is particularly concerned about the so-called long-haulers who continue to have symptoms long after they were infected with the coronavirus.

You hear people say its just like the flu, but COVID scares the heck out of me because of the potential for long-term damage to the heart and brain, she said. When you think about oxygen deprivation and the tissue repair process, it makes sense that many people are having a hard time getting back to normal life, even after a mild infection.

Williams urges people to do all they can to avoid becoming infected. Our heart and brain cells are meant to last a lifetime, and we cannot replace them once they are damaged, she said. Dolphins and whales have natural protections that humans lack, so we are highly vulnerable to hypoxia.

Randall Davis, a marine biologist at Texas A&M University, coauthored the paper with Williams. This work was funded by the Office of Naval Research.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: There is increasing use of radical prostatectomy to treat patients with high-risk prostate cancer. This has contributed toward a pathologic stage migration, and a greater number of patients are subsequently being diagnosed with biochemical failure. There is increasing use of advanced imaging techniques in the setting of biochemical failure, including positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT).

METHODS AND MATERIALS: This critical literature review highlights the evidence for PET-CT in postprostatectomy biochemical failure and identifies sites of pelvic lymph node relapse in the setting of biochemical failure and the potential implications that the locations of these relapses may have for salvage therapies. Potential future directions are then considered.

RESULTS: The optimal PET-CT tracer remains uncertain but there is increasing use of prostate-specific membrane antigen PET-CT for investigating sites of nodal metastasis at low prostate-specific antigen levels, and this is leading to a blurring of the biochemical and radiologic recurrence phases. The optimal therapeutic approach remains undefined, with current trials investigating postoperative radiation therapy to the whole pelvis in addition to the prostatic fossa, the use of PET-CT in the setting of biochemical recurrence to guide delivery of salvage radiation therapy, and, for patients with node-only relapsed prostate cancer, the addition of whole pelvis radiation therapy to metastasis-directed therapies such as stereotactic ablative radiotherapy.

CONCLUSIONS: The most appropriate target volume for salvage radiation therapy remains uncertain, and the findings of studies using PET-CT to map nodal recurrences suggest that there could be a role for extending whole pelvis radiation therapy volumes to increase coverage of superior nodal regions. The emerging fields of radiomics and radiogenomics could provide important prognostic information and aid decision making for patients with relapsed prostate cancer.

Earlier this year Douglas J. Kennett, a UC Santa Barbara professor of anthropology, demonstrated that maize, or corn, became a staple crop in the Americas 4,700 years ago. It turns out he was just beginning to tell the story of the worlds biggest grain crop.

In a new paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Kennett and his co-authors report that by analyzing the genomes of ancient maize they are able to fill in some of the gaps in the 9,000-year-old history of corn, which was first partially domesticated in southwestern Mexico and spread through Central and South America fairly rapidly.

The researchers sequenced the whole genomes of three roughly 2,000-year-old cobs from El Gigante rock shelter in Honduras. Analysis of the genomes yielded a surprise: the millennia-old varieties of Central American maize were more related to ancient and modern corn varieties that were improved in South America, uncovering flows of grains between the regions.

I was most surprised that improved maize varieties developed by Indigenous South Americans were reintroduced northward into Central America, co-lead author Kennett said. We could only know this through whole genome sequencing.

The genetic sleuthing revealed that the arrival of corn from South America may have played a role in the development of more productive varieties and greater consumption in Central America starting about 4,700 years ago.

We show that humans were carrying maize from South America back towards the domestication center in Mexico, said Logan Kistler, curator of archaeogenomics and archaeobotany at the Smithsonians National Museum of Natural History and co-lead author. This would have provided an infusion of genetic diversity that may have added resilience or increased productivity. It also underscores that the process of domestication and crop improvement doesnt just travel in a straight line.

First partially domesticated from teosinte, a wild grass, maize has only reluctantly given up the secrets of its long development. Genetic research, Kennett said, has been challenging because a scarcity of suitable cobs in an environment not kind to organic material. Researchers, however, caught a break in Honduras.

Well-preserved maize is extremely rare in the Americas, but the El Gigante rock shelter has over 10,000 specimens to work with, he said. Most of these fragmentary remains date later than 2,500 years ago, and locating earlier material in the assemblage was challenging and required directly radiocarbon dating large numbers of maize cobs.

Using this approach, Kennett continued, we did identify about 20 early cobs dating to between 4,300-4,000 years ago and we attempted to extract ancient DNA from all of these along with a set of cobs dating to between 2,300 and 1,900 years old. Using the best available techniques we were able to extract working genomes from only three cobs and all of these dated to between 2,300 and 1,900 years ago. This is the frustrating reality of ancient DNA work.

While difficult, the research on maize has entered into a new era of discovery, Kennett said, because whole genome sequencing is revolutionizing our understanding of the past.

We can now know much more about the biochemical processes involved in the domestication process and the sequence of domestication alleles that became fixed during the domestication syndrome, he said. It is also allowing us to track the spread of maize in much greater detail and how these changes altered the path of human history.

Looking ahead, Kennett said that while researchers now know that improved varieties of maize spread from South America into parts of Central America, they dont know when, precisely, it happened. Based on cob morphology, however, theyve hypothesized it occurred by 4,300 years ago.

Testing this hypothesis will require recovering earlier samples with well-preserved genetic material, he said. We also dont know how far north these new varieties spread. This will require whole genome work on cobs of equivalent age farther north (e.g., Mexico). We also dont know if people migrated north carry these newly improved varieties or if seeds simply passed through preexisting exchange networks. This will require working collaboratively with Indigenous populations in Central America to sequence ancient genomes to determine if the appearance of new varieties parallels the appearance of new populations.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare short-term oncologic outcomes and toxicity of focal or partial low-dose-rate brachytherapy (focal/partial LDR-BT) with whole gland low-dose-rate brachytherapy (whole LDR-BT) in localized prostate cancer patients.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: Medical records of eligible patients who underwent focal/partial LDR-BT and whole LDR-BT between 2015 and 2017 at our institution were reviewed retrospectively. Clinical characteristics and pathologic outcomes were compared between focal/partial LDR-BT group and whole LDR-BT group. Biochemical recurrence-free survival was analyzed using Kaplan-Meier method and difference between two groups was assessed with log-rank test. Genitourinary and rectal toxicity were also evaluated between the two groups.

RESULTS: Of the 60 patients analyzed, 30 focal/partial LDR-BT patients and 30 whole LDR-BT brachytherapy patients were included. Relative to the whole LDR-BT group, the focal/partial LDR-BT group had significantly higher initial PSA level (p = 0.002), smaller number of implanted seeds (p < 0.001), and shorter follow-up duration (p < 0.001). There was no significant difference between the two groups with regard to prostate volume, biopsy Gleason score, and risk group stratification. The 3-year biochemical recurrence-free survival estimates for focal/partial LDR-BT group and whole LDR-BT group were 91.8% and 89.6%, respectively, which was not significantly different (p = 0.554). Genitourinary symptoms were significantly worse in whole LDR-BT group than in focal/partial LDR-BT group. The incidence of rectal toxicity was similar between two groups.

CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that the focal/partial LDR-BT is comparable to the whole LDR-BT with respect to short-term biochemical recurrence and toxicities.

Bladder cancer (BC) is a leading cause of death among urothelial malignancies that more commonly affect male population. Poor prognosis and resistance to chemotherapy are the two most important characteristics of this disease. PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway has been considered pivotal in the regulation of proliferation, migration, invasiveness, and metastasis. Deregulation of PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling has been found in 40% of bladder cancers. Several microRNAs (miRNAs) have been reported to interact with the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway with a different possible role in proliferation and apoptosis in bladder cancer. Thus, miRNAs can be used as potential biomarkers for BC. Natural compounds have been in the spotlight for the past decade due to their effective anti-proliferative capabilities. However, little is known of its possible effects in bladder cancer. The aim of this review is to discuss the interplay between PI3K/Akt/mTOR, miRNAs, and natural compounds and emphasize the importance of miRNAs as biomarkers and resveratrol, curcumin and paclitaxel as a possible therapeutic approach against bladder cancer.

Blind Mice with Glaucoma See Again Through Simple Technique that Promotes Youthful Gene Expression – Good News Network

Researchers at Harvard Medical School have successfully restored vision loss and reversed glaucoma-induced damage in mice.

In the mice, the retinal ganglion cells, a principal cell that enables vision, were restored to a youthful state in cases of glaucoma, as well as when the optic nerve, another key component of eyesight, had been damaged. Both were achieved through expressing certain transcription factorsproteins that turn genes on and off.

The study sheds light on the mechanisms of ageing, and identifies new potential therapeutic targets for age-related neuronal diseases such as glaucoma, reads a statement from researchers at Harvard Medical School.

The new study, published in Nature, was conducted by Dr. David Sinclair, of the worlds foremost experts on ageing-related research in mice.

Along with genetic research, Sinclair has also looked at how supplement-ready compounds like resveratrol and Metformin affect aging, and his book, Lifespan: Why We Age and Why We Dont Have To, is a New York Times bestseller.

The science behind Sinclairsnew paper involves the curious process of methylation. Governed by epigeneticsthat is, changes in the genetic expression of the cell over timethe researchers found that methylation in mammalian tissues prevents the cells from replicating proteins properly while simultaneously encoding a kind of genetic history.

One can imagine this as scratches on the bottom of a CD. If the scratches could be removed, the record of proper function is still there, and could still be read by the laser in a CD player.

In his book, Sinclair details the modern theory of aging, which is that changes in epigenetics and damage to cells and tissues prevent the body from properly reading protein-encoding genes, resulting in either faulty, less-functional, i.e. older genes being transcribed, or the proteins not being replaced at all.

Here the authors found that when the mouse neurons were recovering from damage related to glaucoma, the methyl groups which built up over time left, like the scratches being removed from a disk.

This resulted in a process called demethylation. Demethylation was associated with younger genetic expression, in other words, the mouses genes remembered how to be young again, only after demethylation had occurred.

These data indicate that mammalian tissues retain a record of youthful epigenetic informationencoded in part by DNA methylationthat can be accessed to improve tissue function and promote regeneration in vivo, write the authors in their summary.

It remains to be seen whether records of youthful genetic expression are contained within other mammalian tissues, the liver for a random example, through methylation, and whether or not they can be accessed through demethylation.

If its true that simply altering some transcription factors is enough to clear the dust off the rule book for how to build young proteins, Sinclair stands to make a major breakthrough.

Commentary: Hanukkah celebrates a Jewish victory, but this year the rebuilding matters more – Bend Bulletin

What is (the miracle of) Hanukkah? the rabbis of the Talmud ask, then answer: First, the Hasmonean Jews won a battle they were slated to lose. And then, while the besieged Jews had only enough oil to keep the Temple Menorah lit for one day, the oil nevertheless lasted for eight. We celebrate those days with praise and thanksgiving, the Talmud teaches, with joyous singing and festive parties. Its the archetype for most Jewish holidays, as the old saw goes: They tried to kill us. We won. Lets eat.

Most years, Im all in for merriment and oily foods. But this year, a different part of the Hanukkah story resonates most deeply, one Id never paid much heed to. Its not the military victory of the few over the many (though for that I am grateful) or the oil (which must have been a comfort to a battle-weary people). Its about that moment immediately after the Jews won when, surveying the damage in their country and among their people, they realized how much work there was still to be done, and then chose to get up and start doing it. It is, in other words, the perfect allegory for America 2020.

After the Jews finally vanquished King Antiochus and his Seleucid armies some 2,200 years ago, they didnt immediately experience euphoria and jubilation, according to I Maccabees. They walked into the Jerusalem Temple, dispirited from all the losses over the previous few years. They found the sanctuary desolate, the altar desecrated, the gates burnt, the priests chambers demolished, scripture says. They mourned the loss of their holiest places, donning sackcloth and ashes, tearing their clothes. Some parts of the Temple, such as the altar, were so violated that they had to be discarded and rebuilt entirely. Meanwhile, the Jews themselves were deeply divided to the point of civil war, assimilationists battling with self-proclaimed zealots who wanted nothing to do with secular culture.

America, too, has come through hell. In the past year alone, we have lost hundreds of thousands to COVID-19, not to mention the deaths of civil rights icons Ruth Bader Ginsburg and John Lewis. Fires have decimated parts of the West, with 2020 on track to become the hottest year on record. The slayings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and too many others again reveal brutality in our policing system. Weve seen hate-filled Twitter rants and a rise in hate crimes. An impeachment. A bruising electoral battle for the soul of our nation . It is too much, sometimes, to absorb.

The Hasmoneans found their answer to national trauma: They got to work, and they started again. First they appointed leaders devoted to the law to help restore the sanctuarys holiness. Sacred tools were refurbished. Only after community members had faced their ordeal its causes and its consequences did they celebrate.

We, too, can choose to face our own reckoning. What is the story we want history to tell about us? These last years have revealed competing visions: Should we be a country that grapples with its past or one that buries its original sins? Are we a nation of immigrants or a nation of isolationists? Are we individualists or can we recognize that we are all connected that even our bodily health depends on the precautions of people in our community? We have the choice.

What is the miracle of 2020? our descendants may ask. And hopefully they will answer: Americans were being decimated by a virus, but then decided to take responsibility for each other and defeat it by wearing masks, staying home when necessary and listening to science. Or: Our own leaders tried to suppress our right to vote, but we responded with organizing, legislation and court decisions that ensured every Americans voice. Or: Our seas were rising and ice caps melting, but businesses and individuals committed to changing their practices to conserve our precious Earth.

Alternately, of course, our descendants could tell another story. A few hundred years after the Jewish victory basically a minute in Jewish time the corrupt Hasmonean dynasty fell to Rome, and the Jews were sent into exile. Its a tale of victory and of caution at the same time. Some of the most hateful forces in the United States have suffered a setback, but the danger is not, and will not soon be, gone.

The miracle of Hanukkah this year is not in the war but in its aftermath, not in the cruse of oil itself but in the Jews decision to light the menorah at all, to rededicate our religious and political center and to make it holy, to choose to rebuild a nation even after recognizing how much work there was still to be done. They cleared out the trash, cleaned the Temple, and Hanukkah they tried again. Bayamim Hahem Bazman hazeh, we say in the Hanukkah blessings: In those days and in this time, as well. So may it be.

Why it’s kosher to go a little wild with the Hanukkah swag – Los Angeles Times

In October 2018 I received a letter from Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, of blessed memory. My dear Rabbi: she wrote, Thank you for todays surprise, a scrunchie I will wear not only at Hanukkah, but year round.

In addition to being an ordained rabbi, I design fashionable, Hanukkah-themed accessories. I had created a Hanukkah scrunchie to honor Justice Ginsburg, a known fan of the hair tie. Of course, I sent her one.

Early on during my forays in Hanukkah retail, I wondered if it was kosher to contribute to the commercialization of the holiday. When I first saw one of my creations (the Hanukkah nail decals) on display at Bloomingdales, it was definitely a moment for shehecheyanu, the Jewish blessing of thanks for new experiences. But was it the right track for a rabbi? More importantly, was it the right direction for this holiday?

I did a bit of digging and discovered that Hanukkah has always needed a marketing boost, for lack of a better term. The Talmud tells us the story of when the ancient Temple in Jerusalem was rededicated, after being desecrated by the Greeks, and only one flask of proper oil remained. This tiny amount of oil miraculously powered the Temples menorah for eight days.

Now, on each night of Hanukkah, Jews light the menorah to recall that miracle. And it is considered a mitzvah a religious duty to place the menorah where it can be seen by others, whether outside or in a prominent window. This embodies the idea of the Aramaic phrase pirsumei nisa, often used in the Talmud, which means publicizing the miracle.

Finding creative ways to showcase Hanukkah felt like a modern extension of this Talmudic principle and my rabbinic work. I soon discovered I was part of a long line of Jewish entrepreneurs who were boosters of Hanukkah, which is considered a minor Jewish holiday.

A century ago, Jewish immigrants arriving in America could never have fathomed the multitude of Hanukkah products now for sale. In The Wonders of America: Reinventing Jewish Culture, 1880-1950, Jenna Weissman Joselit explains that during the early 1900s there was little demand for Jewish products here, as most families brought the ritual objects they needed including menorahs from the Old Country.

Still, by the time these Jewish immigrants arrived in this country, Christmas already outstripped all other events as a time for merchandising, according to Leigh Eric Schmidt, author of Consumer Rites: The Buying and Selling of American Holidays. If Hanukkah were to thrive and catch up with Christmas it needed to reinvent itself in the U.S.

In the 1920s, under the guidance of Jewish advertisers, ads were placed in Yiddish newspapers urging Jews to buy gifts and toys for Hanukkah. Yiddish ads also promoted the use of American ingredients to prepare Hanukkah meals to create authentic American Hanukkah experiences. Hanukkah-themed chocolate coins, known as gelt, were first produced in the 1920s. A 1932 Jack Frost Sugar ad exclaimed in Yiddish: Its the sugar on the latke that gives it the Hanukkah spirit.

By the 1940s, new Hanukkah-branded products were arriving on the scene, including the first Hallmark Hanukkah greeting cards. The next 50 years saw significant growth in the market including the popularity of musical menorahs of the 1950s which played fragments of Hatikvah (Israels national anthem) or Rock of Ages and electric menorahs in the 1960s.

The next few decades also saw a sharp rise in Hanukkah toys, including sticker books and gelt-filled dreidels. By the 90s, Hanukkah products had gone national, appearing on the shelves of many mainstream department stores.

Online shopping spurred the Hanukkah apparel category including ugly-chic Hanukkah sweaters, echoing the Christmas sweater trend. The Hanukkah market now features gifts for pets (apparently, even dogs and cats have Christmas envy).

Have there been excesses along the way? Absolutely (see Hanukkah for pets, above). And yet I think that the overindulgence has heightened the public celebration of Hanukkah.

This year we could use a little extra Hanukkah spirit. The holiday has always been home-centric, focused on menorah lighting, latke making, and gift giving. When in-person communal gatherings are limited in size or supplanted by virtual ones Hanukkah swag can enhance our enjoyment of the holiday. Wearing dreidel leggings may not exactly fulfill the Talmudic principle of publicizing the miracle. But they can add some zing to a Hanukkah Zoom party.

After laying siege to Jerusalem, the Romans, led byTitus, finally breached the walls of Jerusalem, and on the 9th of the Jewishmonth of Av, in the year 69 CE, destroyed theHoly Temple and plundered it.

In the year 81 CE, shortly after the death of his olderbrother Titus, the emperor Domitian had an archbuilt depicting the triumphal procession after Tituss victory over Jerusalem. The Arch of Titus, which stands in Rometo this very day, depicts the procession carrying a number of items plunderedfrom the Jewish Temple, including the silver trumpets, the Table of theShowbread, and most prominently the golden Menorah.

Thetreasures plundered from Jerusalem were housed and displayed in the so-calledPeace Gardens of Rome, which were built using the booty acquired through thesacking of Jerusalem.

Thestory is told in the Talmud of how Rabbi Eliezer, son of Rabbi Yossi, together with Rabbi Shimonbar Yochai and other sages, went to Rome to try to rescind some of the harshdecrees against the Jews. While in Rome, they were miraculously given theopportunity to heal the caesar's daughter, who had fallen ill. Aftersuccessfully healing her, they were given the opportunity to see some of Rome'streasures. These sageslater testified to seeing various items looted from the Holy Temple, including the goldentzitz (golden band worn by the high priest), Parochet (Curtain)and the Menorah.

Basedon these stories, one can understand why many claim that the Menorah, as wellas other items plundered from the Temple, was taken to Rome and may be foundthere to this very day.

However,as we examine this theory, things get a bit murkier.

Theso-called Peace Gardens of Rome were damaged or destroyed a number of times,including in a fire in the year 191 CE. While the garden was subsequentlyrestored, it is not clear if the vessels remained there or perhaps were takento some other place in Rome.

Additionally,Rome itself was sacked and plundered many times, including in 410 CE, by the Visigoths under Alaric I, andmore significantly in 455 CE by the Vandals and Moors under King Genseric, whospent 14 days looting Rome of its treasures.

Sowhat happened to the Menorah?

Someclaim that the Menorah may have been hidden or lost in the Tiber River in Romeduring one of the sackings. Some claim that the Menorah may have eventuallybeen melted down for the gold. Others say that, according to legend, when King Alaric of the Visigoths died shortlyafter the sacking of Rome in 410 CE, the Visigoths buried him togetherwith the Menorah they looted.

Yet others opine that the Menorah was taken from Rome by the Vandals inthe more significant sacking of 455 CE and taken to Carthage (modern-dayTunisia). When Carthage itself was sacked, it ended up in the hands of theByzantine Empire. However, Emperor Justinian, due to the superstition that theMenorah was cursed, sent it off to Jerusalem, where it disappeared (destroyedor stolen) when the Persians captured Jerusalem in the 7th century CE.

And then, of course, there is the claim, mentioned at the beginning ofthis article, that the Menorah has remained in Rome and is currently hiddenaway somewhere deep in the Vatican. Indeed, over the years, various people haveclaimed to have seen various Temple vessels in the Vatican.

Allof the above theories, however, are based on the claim that the Temple Menorahwas brought to Rome in the first place.

Althoughwe have cited the depiction of the Menorah in the Arch of Titus as well asRabbi Shimon Bar Yochais testimony as evidence of the Menorah having beentaken to Rome, these proofs in and of themselves are questionable.

Onthe Arch of Titus, although the upper half of the Menorah can arguably be adepiction of the actual Temple Menorah,the bottom half is not. It depicts the Menorahs base as being similar to a two-tiered cake, while the TempleMenorah had a tripod base. Andthe Menorah on the Arch is decorated with images of eagles, a sea lion andmythological creatures, including a dragon, while the Temple Menorah didnthave any of these images (some argue that the base itself may have been damagedand replaced).

Based on this, some explain that either the Menorah brought to Rome was,in fact, one of the other lamps in the Temple, or the depiction was based off aMenorah that was made to resemble the Temple Menorah.

Similarly, the sages disagree with Rabbi Eliezers description of thedesign of the tzitz, implying that hedid not see the actual tzitz, or atleast it was a tzitz that wasnt madein the usual manner. Thus,the testimony of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai regarding the Menorah may bequestionable as well.

Although there is much ado about the Menorah possibly having beenbrought to Rome, it is important to keep things in perspective.

The Midrash lists the Temple Menorahwhich was originally made by Mosesfor the Mishkanas oneof a handful of vessels of the Holy Temple that were hidden by the Jews beforethe destruction of the First Temple by the Babylonians.

Later, during the Second Temple, the Menorah went through a number ofdifferent iterations. In the words of the Talmud:

[In the time of the Hasmoneans, theMenorah was fashioned from] spits [shappudim]of iron, and they covered them with tin. Later, when they grew richer, theyfashioned a Menorah out of silver. And when they again grew richer, theyfashioned the Menorah from gold.

Thus, even if the Menorah was indeed taken to Rome, ultimately thatMenorah isnt the one we need for the Third Holy Temple. As the Midrashregarding the hiding of the Menorah concludes, ultimately, when Gd will turnHis mercy to build His Temple, He will also restore the vessels that werehidden (including the Menorah) to their place and cause Jerusalem to rejoice.May it be speedily in our days!

(JTA) When Danielle Kranjec committed to using only Jewish texts written by women and queer people in the classes she taught for Hillel Internationals Springboard Fellowship, a program that places recent college graduates in positions at college campus Hillels across the country, she knew she was taking on a challenging task.

After all, for most of Jewish history, women werent encouraged to take on religious leadership roles or write commentaries on the Torah or Talmud.

But Kranjec knew that elevating the work of women would be worth the effort, both because doing so would communicate the value of womens insights to her students and she believes the mismatch between the diversity of the people teaching Torah today and the sources they teach had grown too great. Also, as a Jewish educator and trained historian, she knew there were a plethora of texts that might not be considered Torah in the traditional sense but could serve as rich source material.

Much of the time, those who assemble materials for Jewish study sessions commonly known as source sheets start with the Torah text, working their way to the rabbinic texts, the Mishna and Talmud, followed by commentaries on texts written over a span of more than a thousand years. Men wrote the vast majority of those texts.

Im trying to do something different, to start in the lives of women and then follow the Torah that emerges from that, Kranjec said, noting her love for the memoirs of Gluckel of Hameln, a 17th century Jewish woman whose autobiography is an important primary text for Jewish historians.

Two years later, Kranjecs name is now synonymous with a growing movement to advance womens voices in Jewish text study. The Kranjec Test, coined by her colleagues at Hillel International, calls on educators to include a text written by someone who is not male on any source sheet including at least two Jewish texts.

Along with other initiatives to encourage more women to publish Jewish religious writing, the test is shaking up the world of Jewish study and calling attention to the ways in which women are still not equally represented in positions of authority in the world of Jewish text study.

The Kranjec Test is inspired by the Bechdel test, in which a work of fiction or film passes if it includes a conversation between two female characters about something other than a man. That test has become well known after being invented by cartoonist Alison Bechdel in 1985, though according to The Hollywood Reporter, approximately half of the top-grossing 25 movies that came out in 2016 did not pass the test.

But the Kranjec Test is perhaps more challenging because unlike fiction and film, Jewish study largely revolves around texts written long before the modern feminist movement.

Still, in recent years, traditional text study has ceased to be the exclusive domain of men. Women have taken their place among the most well known and respected Torah teachers today, teachers and activists for feminist causes in the Jewish world say, leaving the texts themselves as the next frontier. So in addition to focusing on the people who are visible in positions of authority today, Jewish educators are going to the source material, trying to right the balance between representation of men and women in the texts they are teaching.

If the leadership and the no more manels is top down, this is more grassroots, Kranjec said.

The test has adherents among Hillel educators and is spreading among educators at pluralistic institutions of Jewish learning. Its recently been the subject of debate among Jewish educators on listservs and in heated social media discussions.

Holding oneself accountable for including womens work even in traditionally male domains such as halacha, or Jewish law, carries a benefit, according to Elana Stein Hain, scholar in residence and director of faculty at the Shalom Hartman Institute, where she leads a research group that focuses on issues of gender and leadership in the Jewish community. By bringing in sources written by women that are less directly related to the subject being taught, what youve done is actually elucidated and expanded the way we understand these earlier ideas, she said.

But not everyone who wants to see more womens voices in Jewish text study believes the test is a good idea.

Itll create a sort of impression that a woman who finds her way onto a source sheet hasnt done so because she is brilliant and erudite and profound but because of this positive discrimination, said Gila Fine, editor in chief of Maggid Books, an imprint of Koren Publishers in Jerusalem.

Fine said she almost always includes women on her source sheets in teaching at the Pardes Institute in Jerusalem but thats because doing so is relatively easy in the subject she teaches, aggadah, which includes stories from the Talmud.

Women have earned their place fair and square in the world of aggadah, Fine said. Theyre two steps behind in the world of halacha, and theyll get there, but creating that shortcut will hurt them in the long run.

In a blog post from September, Rabbi Michael Rosenberg, a professor of rabbinics at Hebrew College, wrote about his own difficulty in finding a suitable woman-authored text to use in a class centered on a rabbinic text. Rosenberg eventually included a piece by the modern poet Mary Oliver and wrote that it brought new meaning and depth to the source that he would not have found had he limited his sources to premodern ones.

The historical exclusion of women from Torah study was not only hurtful to women (though that would be enough reason to want to remedy it); it also hurt Torah, he wrote. Because of the loss of people with different experiences and perspectives, the Torah is haseirah, its lacking, its not its full self.

To Fine, whats needed are more and more diverse religious texts written by women. Maggid has made publishing books by women teachers a priority, she said, and in recent years has brought to print books by Erica Brown, a popular lecturer and a professor at George Washington University; Rachel Berkovits, a lecturer at the Pardes Institute; and Nechama Price, the director of Yeshiva Universitys graduate program in Talmud for women. In the past few years, three books of traditional halachic responsa, answers to Jewish legal questions, written by women have been published, including one by Maggid, constituting what Fine calls a huge step in the right direction for women.

But Fine said she often finds herself having to convince women teachers that their work is good enough to publish or that they are ready.

I will get many, many manuscripts by a man in his 20s who has written a book about Genesis or Maimonides, something as grandiose as that, Fine said. Conversely when I have actively approached women who are established and brilliant and profound and nuanced in the Torah that they do and I say I think youre great and should be writing a book, more often than not the response I get is I dont think Im quite ready.

Users of Sefaria, an online database of Jewish texts that allows one to see hyperlinks between texts in a side-by-side format, also want to see more texts by women. Sara Wolkenfeld, Sefarias director of learning, said its not uncommon for users to complain that there arent enough texts written by women in the sites database.

Thats not a Sefaria problem, Wolkenfeld said. Thats an issue with the history of Jewish texts.

The site is taking steps to change that history. Along with Yeshivat Maharat, a Modern Orthodox yeshiva in New York City that ordains women, Sefaria is launching a fellowship to encourage Jewish women to put their ideas onto the page. The program will provide training and stipends to 12 women who will each write an article, book chapter, legal opinion or other form of Torah text.

We want to create a space for women to say, no, I do have something to contribute and I can do that work and I can put it out there, Wolkenfeld said.

Fine said the initiative is a welcome addition to a space that is slowly but surely beginning to change in ways that could reshape the idea of who gets to create Torah.

Its still individual attempts, Fine said, adding that with time, these trickles will become a current.

Several women advocating for increasing representation of women in Jewish text study have struggled with the idea that Torah texts written by women would be inherently different from those written by men. Even so, Stein Hain argued, it would be worth including them to expand the quantity of texts available to learn from.

Im not sold on the idea that a womans take is going to be different but I am sold on the idea that we shouldnt be limiting the voices to male voices, said Stein Hain. Youre missing out on more people having good ideas about Torah.

Efforts to increase the volume of texts by women that are part of the Jewish library may never lead to actual parity theres only so much that can be accomplished by modern women adding their own scholarship to the collected works of thousands of years of male scholars.

On the mikraot gedolot page, were always going to have the same people, Kranjec said of the classic medieval rabbinic commentaries traditionally printed alongside the text of the Torah. Thats not really going to change because of our extensive, beautiful, wonderful long, complicated, patriarchal textual tradition.

But if they cant catch up, Kranjec argued, modern teachers have to make space for them on the pages of their source sheets, both through newly published scholarship and by mining the tradition for places where womens voices have shone through.

I need us to learn Gluckel in conversation with 17th century Jewish thought, I need us to read other early modern poets I need all of that to be a part of the conversation and modern writers, too, she said.

In summary, she added, I want all of it.
