One of the worlds first civilizations, it rose to power between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers. Theyre led by Hammurabi, their most influential leader that created the famous Hammurabis Code, considered one of the worlds first systems of law. Ever heard of "eye for an eye"?

These Mesopotamian people have a rather unique playstyle in Civ 6 that allows them to unlock technologies at blinding fast speeds, should they play their cards right. With their ability to set up infrastructure quickly early on, they are a force to reckon with that can succeed in any victory path they put their mind to. For new players that want to try out Babylon, heres a guide that explains all of their abilities, and how to use them.

This a civilization with a high skill ceiling, meaning more experienced players will have better chances of winning because they know the game's mechanics. This is becauseBabylon's ability, Enuma Anu Enlil, completely alters how players progress through the technology tree. Civ 6 has a game mechanic called eurekas, which shave time off research if a civilization completes a certain objective. For instance, settling a city on a coast grants the eureka for the sailing technology. Enuma Anu Enlil makes eurekas unlock the entire technology, instead of a portion. This is compensated by reducing their overall science yields by half. Using this mechanic, Babylon can reliably advance through the tech tree on eurekas, but has to rely on it. When settling cities, players should do so in ways to further their eurekas. Here are some of the possible combos that are possible thanks to this ability.

Industrialization Rush

Crossbow Dominance

Steel Fortification

The eureka strategies players can employ depending on the resources available in their starting location, making this civ one with high replay value. Many eurekas in the early game are activated by improving certain resources, so try to settle the starting city in a place that meets one of the above criteria. However, most players should prioritize settling on rivers. Their unique water mill, the Palgum, is a miniature canal system they used to control the flow of the rivers in their territory. In Civ, it will grant +2 production in the city, and +1 food for every tile adjacent to a river. This will let river cities populate quickly, so the more river tiles in their territory the better. Try not to place districts on rivers, as they will eliminate the bountiful yields of the tiles theyre placed on.

Speaking of districts, Hammurabis ability, Ninu Ilu Sirum, grants the first building of each district instantly. Though it only works the first time each type of district is built, it can save the player several turns of production that can be spent making something else. This is particularly useful for founding a religion because Hammurabis first holy site will come with a free shrine. The quicker players can build up their great prophet points, the sooner they can get their religion.

Players should train builders as soon as they found their city, as theyre needed to make the improvements necessary for many of the eureka boosts. Something else that should be trained early on are their unique Sabum Kibittum. These powerful spearmen are strong against cavalry and have additional movement. This lets them move quickly across the map and scout out the land, which is useful because many eurekas are earned through discovery. Astrology (needed for religion) is obtained after discovering a natural wonder, and Writing (needed for science) is unlocked after meeting another civilization.

While getting the Babylonian empire established, be sure to build campuses and theatre squares. Campuses are needed to gain great scientists, who can give eurekas whenever theyre used; or in Babylons case, full technologies! There are several eurekas that require different civics to obtain, so dont ignore culture. Also, be sure to build the intelligence agency in the government plaza. This will make spies complete their missions quicker, and because spies can steal the eurekas for technologies, Babylon completes new techs every time they spy on another civilization's campus district.

Though their ability lets them breeze through the science tree, theyre not forced to go for a science victory. The techs needed to send a colony to Mars have more challenging eurekas to fulfill. Instead, domination is a viable option because of the edge they have in warfare; more advanced technologies means more advanced military. Religious victories are doable, as Hammurabis ability can make founding a religion much quicker. Even cultural and diplomatic routes are possible, thanks to all the options their tech tree warping can accomplish. It all depends on the player's playstyle, and the environment they start the game in.

FOR a book about how humanity now stands on the cusp of beating the scourge of ageing, I felt pretty damn old by the time Id finished this work by Andrew Steele. There are popular science books and then there are science textbooks, and Ageless: The New Science of Getting Older Without Getting Old falls down on the textbook side of the divide.

I dont consider myself a scientific dunce but for someone without a fair bit of scientific learning under their belt, Ageless can be daunting. This randomly selected passage gives a flavour: Another place where clonal expansions are common is among the HSCs the stem cells responsible for making blood cells. The most common driver mutation in HSCs is a gene called DNMT3A.

The book begins well, telling us how the giant tortoises which Darwin studied on the Galapagos Islands gave the first hint that negligible senescence effectively the act of ageing without showing signs of age and biological immortality were possible. If only we could understand the processes which allow these great creatures to live so long, we could mimic them ourselves, extending our lifespans greatly. Harriet, one Galapagos tortoise collected by Darwin in 1835, finally died in 2006.

Steele uncovers just how close we really are to cracking the curse of old age. Were within a few generations of being able to slow and arrest the ageing process, prolong lifespans and eradicate a host of biological evils which have haunted humankind throughout our existence. For that alone, Steele deserves plaudits.

There are some incredible revelations in this book. The science is fascinating despite the dry delivery. Laboratory breakthroughs are now being made in genetics and medicine that will presently herald a new biological era. Humanity could soon see average lifespans expand astonishingly 120-plus might shortly be a not uncommon age to live to, with all your physical and mental faculties crucially intact.

Ageing, we learn, is merely Mother Natures sleight of hand. In terms of our lifespans, it doesnt matter how many years pass, what matters is the degradation of the body caused simply by being alive. Cells wear out, DNA gets ragged, microscopic gunk builds up in the body causing everything from heart attack to Alzheimers. If we can work out how to stop this biological collapse, we can delay, even suspend, ageing. The human body really is a machine and were currently working out how to repair it indefinitely.

This is the realm of biogerontology the study of human ageing. Whats astonishing is that scientists have known for decades that life can be prolonged but with illnesses like polio and smallpox dominating medicine until recently, science has had little time or money to invest in what was seen as the esoteric study of ageless ageing. Now though, as medicine progresses to the point where we can control if not cure monstrous diseases like cancer, scientists have the time and funds to explore the last great frontier: taming ageing itself.

Were looking at the kind of technological breakthroughs that will inevitably inspire a new wave of science fiction. I suspect well see reprised versions of The Picture of Dorian Gray or She both stories about the gift and curse of immortality as these discoveries seep into the public imagination.

What Steele says is both revolutionary and important life-changing in the true sense of the word. His thinking is bold, visionary, utopian: Every day we bring forward a cure for ageing, we save 100,000 lives. We know its scientifically possible. Its now up to all of us to meet the defining humanitarian challenge of our time.

Some ageing experiments have been macabre, like splicing two living rats together one young, one old, to discover if youthful tissue can delay the ageing process in older animals. In short, the answer is: it can giving rise to a whole new concept when it comes to vampirism.

I wanted more of this. I wanted to know the lives of the crazy geniuses who are about to change human existence their motives, their inspirations, their challenges and struggles. I also wanted to know more about the social impact of these new scientific breakthroughs that are coming our way. Steele poses some questions early on about what super-extended life spans would mean when it comes to population, employment, pay, pensions and climate change but quickly leaves that behind as we enter textbook territory.

What struck me most about this book, though, was the sense of personal disquiet it gave me. Middle-aged folk like me, and our children, might be the last two generations to really live with the fear of the grotesqueries of growing old. If Steele is right, and we really will soon be able to keep the human body in a state of almost constant good maintenance, both mentally and physically, then my grandchildren may well inherit a world without cancer, stroke, heart attack and dementia; where diabetes and Parkinsons are beaten; where the simple wear and tear on the human body and brain can be repaired with stem cells, gene therapy and medicines being invented in the lab right now.

These breakthroughs will force humanity to ask huge metaphysical questions about itself, and about the nature and meaning of life. Thats what I wanted from this book.

Great popular science books should work like all the best non-fiction: you follow the writer on a journey into an unknown world populated by fascinating characters. Great non-fiction is full of colour and reportage, sugaring the pill of material that might otherwise seem intimidating. Its the old Reithian trick of entertaining while educating.

I wanted Ageless to take me into a world I knew nothing about and show me the men and women working in the lab wholl change the shape of tomorrow and I wanted Steele to lead me through the moral maze this Brave New World will confront us with as a species. Instead, I felt like I was back at school swotting for my Biology A Level.

On Sunday, Celtic achieved Scottish footballing immortality. A nerve-shredding shootout victory over Hearts in the Scottish Cup final lifted Neil Lennons side to the quadruple-treble.

A perfect dozen. 12 competitions, 12 wins. An unprecedented feat or so Celtic thought.

After seeing off Hearts in the Hampden Park decider, the Hoops tweeted: A world first. The #QuadrupleTreble winners, Celtic Football Club.

However, Gibraltar side Lincoln Red Imps took exception to the second and third word of that tweet.

Responding to Celtics tweet, the minnows said: Hold my beer. The #QuintupleTreble 2003/04, 2004/05, 2005/06, 2006/07 and 2007/08.

Lincoln won the Gibraltar Football League, the Rock Cup and the Gibraltar League Senior Cup every year between 2004 and 2008.

However, prior to 2014, Gibraltar was not recognised as an official Uefa nation.

Of course, this is not the first time the Red Imps have been a thorn in Celtics side. In 2016, they produced one of the greatest shocks in recent history by beating the Scottish Premiership champions in their Champions League qualifier.

The result marked a humiliating start to Brendan Rodgers reign as Celtic boss. The Glasgow giants did bounce back, however, running out 3-0 winners in the return leg at home to progress to the next qualifying round.

Speaking after Celtics win over Hearts, Martin ONeill who managed Lennon at Celtic said he was delighted for his former player.

Im delighted for him, ONeill told BBC Scotland.

Hes taken a lot of stick in recent months, I think its really uncalled for as well because we are witnessing the 12th successive domestic trophy which hes been a large part of in many aspects.

I really cant believe it. It saddens me to think of him under that kind of pressure. Its not respite for him anymore; its a great evening for them.

Everton are facing a crucial period between now and the end of the year.

Manchester United travel to Goodison Park on Wednesday, with a spot in the EFL Cup semi-finals on the line.

Then a frantic spell of Premier League action lies in wait, with Everton now up to fourth after three big wins in a week.

We spoke exclusively to former Toffees goalkeeper Nigel Martyn about the forthcoming run, and whether players will be rested in midweek to prepare for the hectic league schedule.

With the quarter-final and so many games coming up, there will be opportunities for fringe players, I think, said Martyn. Maybe not defensively, theres arent many fit.

But there might be a change up front. Both teams will look to rest players, they have to. Theres so many games. You want to try and give players a rest.

Thats Carlos job, where is his priority? Getting back to fourth in the league and theres a chance of Champions League, does that become your priority?

If it does, you then rest players (in midweek) ahead of Sheffield United and Man City.

You rest your players for that, definitely. On the flip side of that, there hasnt been silverware at Everton for a long time and if youre the manager who delivers that, thats your immortality, he continued.

It will be a strong team. The one I dont know is I dont know if hell start with Calvert-Lewin. Youve almost got to rest him and hope that Cenk Tosun or whoever plays does it for him.

Thats the one area. Your stronger squad players, there will probably be three or four of those.

Defensively itll be a strong team. It is an important game, but he has to make one or two changes because of the amount of games. A game of that importance has come at the wrong time of year, really.

As Martyn eludes to, the timing of such a big knockout game isnt ideal, so close to the busy Christmas period.

But it remains a huge game and if United make changes, there could be a major opportunity for Everton to progress into the last four.

Its a big call for Ancelotti and resting Calvert-Lewin would be as well so it will be interesting to see what he decides to do.

Pando: the aspen colony that might be the oldest known living organism – SB Nation

Nature doesnt have to be horrible. I know thats a weird thing to say at Secret Base, where we have enjoyed exploding ants, tongue-chomping parasites and trees that kill birds for the lols. But evolution has produced some curiosities that arent a combination of bizarre and heinous, and perhaps its time to lighten up with a discussion of one of the most impressive curiosities of all: Pando.

Pando is possibly the oldest, heaviest living thing on Earth. These things are difficult to determine; its definitely one of both. It lives in Fishlake National Forest, and is a quaking aspen. Sort of.

Because we live on the macro scale, were used to thinking of living being as discrete entities. A person is a person, a dog is a dog, and a tree is a tree. But, as we encountered with our exploding ants, thats not always the most sensible way of understanding the natural world, which tends to be at least a little indifferent to the entire concept of individualism.

The oldest individual trees in the world are Californias bristlecone pines, windblown* subalpine conifers which can live for thousands of years. The oldest known living specimen, Methuselah, has been verified at a staggering 4,852 years old. No matter how you slice it, this is an impressive figure, and while its abnormally high for a bristlecone there are plenty around only a couple millennia younger.

*Fun fact: theres a word for the weird, wind-sculpted trees that you see on shorelines or mountains. Theyre called krummholz trees, and they are gorgeous.

Pando, meanwhile, is significantly older. Until recently, rough estimates had it at something like 80,000 years old; this has been revised down significantly in light of the fact that the area of Utah in which it lives was covered by an ice sheet 20,000 years ago, a problem even the most badass tree would have trouble surviving. Pandos now clocking in at a mere 15,000 or so.

Unlike the bristlecones, which can be dated accurately through tree rings, its pretty hard to get a fix on Pandos exact age. This is because Pando is a tree colony. Quaking aspens have the curious property of being able to reproduce themselves clonally, sending up new seedlings from their roots. These ramets function, for all intents and purposes, as baby trees, living and dying just like youd expect any stand-alone aspen to.

But theyre all the same organism. Pando is a 13 million pound collective of more than 40,000 stems, genetically identical and all grown from the same massive (100+ acres, easily) root system. It cares about individual stems just about as much the average person might fuss about individual hairs on their head.

How does anyone know any of this? How can they begin to guess at Pandos biology? Establishing the genetic identity of the trees is fairly straightforward these days, but the whole colony? As it turns out, quaking aspen have an extremely hard time reproducing through non-clonal in the American West, where the climate turned unfavorable several thousands years ago. As Mitton and Grant justified the age estimate in their 1996 paper, Genetic Variation and the Natural History of Quaking Aspen:

Part of the rationale behind current age estimates for aspen clones is that sexual reproduction is effectively frustrated by the rareity of a favorable suite of conditions in semiarid environments. Clonal age, in the strictest sense, truly applies only to the individual genome, which is the single element of clone identity that would be continous across such time spans. ... Perhaps DNA sequence data from various parts of the clone could be used to estimate age from the accumulation of mutations.

As far as I could find out, that last study has not actually been executed, but given the conditions in which Pando lives its very, very clear that its an extraordinarily ancient organism. And its not just ancient while bristlecone pines are studies in endurance in the face of deep time, Pandos a very different story. Instead of fortitude, it invokes dynamism. Decadent stasis might be an interesting fantasy, but nature is built from Pandos, systems that masquerade as individuals and persist into what might as well be eternity.

If the theories of the origins of life I was taught at university are correct, some billions of years ago, a chemical cell in a deep-sea volcano managed to bud off a copy of itself, and has echoed its way to chaotic, confounding immortality. The entire biosphere is, in some ways, a Pando, genetically drifting its barely-perceptible way to quaking aspens, tongue-eating lice and us.

Humanity is only just beginning to understand how biology actually operates. Darwinian evolution is 160 years old, and the structure of DNA was only determined in the early 1950s. Hell, Antonie van Leeuwenhoeks discovery of microscopic life was less than four centuries ago. For most of Pandos thousands of years existence, humans wouldnt even have been able to recognize it. Theyd literally miss the forest for the trees.

Theres something profound in that emergent reality. Theres also something perverse there too. Since the 80s, Pando seems to be struggling, unable to bring its ramets to maturity fast enough to replace falling stems. In 2019, Rodgers and ebesta produced this uneasy paragraph:

While it is clear the base cause of the current trajectory is not mature tree mortality, but chronic browsing of regenerating aspen suckers, we are left wondering how this iconic organism survived and thrived likely for millenniathe exact age is unknownwhile it appears to be dwindling suddenly during our time. Changes in ungulate herbivore management over recent decades provides the most plausible explanation, though exacerbating agents, such as increased human presence and warming/drying climatic conditions likely play a role. Collectively, both direct and indirect human impacts are negatively influencing Pando.

We live in the first age that is able to grope its way back towards the true mysteries of biology. We also live in an age that seems preternaturally gifted at disrupting that biology, and in a civilization that only barely cares about the consequences.

Pando will probably get along ok we dont let celebrities go that easy. We can fence off regions to prevent overgrazing of young stems, that sort of thing. But a Pando is just a Pando; without taking better care of the supra-organizational systems that support these miracles ... well end up killing many of them off just as were learning to appreciate them.

How to add gorgeous greenery to your home this Christmas – The Irish Times

In early December of 2019, Laurie Pressman, vice-president of the world-famous, trend-setting Pantone Colour Institute, proudly declared to the world that classic blue would be its 2020 colour of the year.

Hindsight, of course, is a wonderful thing. Who ever could have guessed that there was a global pandemic on its way or that when we look back on this very odd, challenging and in many strange ways transformative year, it wont be the colour blue that best embodies it (except perhaps as an indicator of the nations mood) but instead the colour green.

The freshly hatched, miraculous baby green of a tray of newborn seedlings back in lockdown #1, for example, when it felt the world as we knew it might be about to end.

Or the soft, apple-green of Irish gardens bursting into new leaf in what turned out to be the loveliest, if eeriest, of springs. The box-fresh green of early summers freshly mown lawns when together we took a collective deep breath and tentatively emerged from our homes. Or the late-summer, burnished golden-green of the wild grasses that flourished in cracks in city pavements and along our roads and motorways, their growth for once unhindered.

Green, of course, represents life and hope, regeneration and rebirth. Its why so many of us have been strongly drawn to our gardens and the outdoors throughout this pandemic and why we also traditionally decorate our homes with fresh greenery at this time of year when days are at their shortest and natures pulse is at its slowest.

Examples of traditional Christmas evergreens include Irelands own native ivy (Hedera hibernica), which has long been symbolic of immortality, fidelity and tenacity (if youve ever tried removing it from an old wall or building, then youll know too well how stubbornly it clings).

Likewise holly, another native evergreen, was traditionally believed to have protective powers and to ward away evil, the reason why it was often planted close to peoples homes or farm buildings.

Other examples include the non-native semi-parasitic plant known as mistletoe (Viscum album or drualas, to give it its Irish name), which has long been seen as a symbol of fertility, immortality and healing. Similarly the pine tree traditionally used for Christmas trees as well as for Christmas or Yule logs was believed to ward away evil and ill health while the native yew is considered a symbol of eternity and good luck.

These traditional Christmas evergreens aside, theres a wealth of other evergreen plants often found growing in Irish gardens that can be used to decorate the home at this festive time of year. Examples include eucalyptus, pittosporum, ozothamnus, Scots pine, rosemary, bay laurel, fir, heather, sarcococca, juniper and ruscus, many of which are also highly aromatic.

A simple garland, swag or wreath made from any of the above is one of the loveliest, most sustainable and most meaningful of ways to mark the season. Alternatively, to add a contemporary twist, consider creating a hanging/suspended Christmas-themed evergreen installation using any/a mix of the above attached by wire or string to a garland of rope (great for a stairway) or a length of flexible piping such as oil line or insulated copper pipe. The latter, widely available from good hardware shops, has the advantage of being easily bent into any rigid shape you might want. Wrapped in a soft layer of moss, it can then be used as the concealed scaffolding for larger-scale seasonal arrangements that require some form of rigid support. Its also re-usable; simply strip away the faded foliage at the end of Christmas and store it away somewhere safe for the following year.

To give a little more textural or sculptural interest to your seasonal, evergreen Christmas arrangements, you could add dried flowers (for reasons of sustainability, try to source Irish-grown or use your own, good choices include honesty (Lunaria), strawflowers (Helichrysum bracteatum), hydrangeas and the silver plumes of pampas grass (Cortaderia selloana), as well as ornamental seedheads (examples include nigella, opium poppy and teasels), berries, pine cones and the elegantly twiggy branches of deciduous trees such as larch, contorted willow and contorted hazel. For a little extra Christmas bling, add some battery-powered fairy lights.

Alternatively, you could use one or two of those same bare twiggy branches (or some very large stems of dried lunaria) as a simple but very ornamental scaffold/ rigid support from which to suspend a variety of individual dried flowers, seedheads and cones. For best results, use the very fine-gauge floristry wire known as bullion wire, which is available in a range of colours from good floristry suppliers and some hardware stores, to do this. Placed at a height above the Christmas table or in a hallway (make sure that its safely out of reach of any candle flames), it will make an enduringly beautiful seasonal arrangement for the weeks ahead.

Which brings me to my last few words of advice: dont be at all surprised to find yourself falling so in love with your hand-fashioned seasonal Christmas decorations that youll be loathe to ever take them down. You have been warned

Lighting candles of hope, peace and joy – Delaware Gazette

We are halfway through the last month of this long and very strange year. Its time for me to order a new month-at-a-glance calendar with room for notes in which I have recorded for decades my activities and important things that I have learned. Last year when the traditional black, my favorite choice, was unavailable, I had to settle for the sparkly, silver-leather covered calendar that will be added to my stack representing years of ministry, and I am certain it will stand out in a myriad of ways for the rest of my life.

When I first opened the pages, I felt such hope and promise for 2020, the beginning of a new decade. I believed that God would lead in exciting and fresh ways. Never did I imagine that we would experience Gods provision and faithfulness in the midst of an unprecedented global pandemic. I could not have projected that after a few weeks our church would never gather in a building together in one place, that we wouldnt be able to touch or hug, or share a meal or hear the beautiful voices lifted in shared worship, and that something called Zoom would be our new normal. And I certainly wouldnt have seen that, in spite of the distancing and physical separation for the remainder of the year that God would bring our hearts closer together than ever, that we would expand our circle of family and friends, and that we would reunite with others, and that we would experience the power of prayer in such profound ways.

We have lit the first three candles of our Advent wreath: the candles of hope, peace, and joy as we carry on this ritual that began centuries ago. I know of more people than ever this year who are gathering candles and starting a new family tradition. No matter how make-shift or humble our Advent wreaths are, or even if it is in our minds eye, the wreath which has no beginning and no end assures us of the eternity of God, the immortality of the soul, and the everlasting life we find in Christ. The light in our candles reminds us who Jesus is. In him was life and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it (John 1:4-5).

According to U.S. Center for Disease Control reports, the United States has the most confirmed COVID infected people, and this country is at the top of the graph of number of deaths. The pandemic is hitting home; we are hearing more and more of sick people and ones that we know being impacted. Mobile morgues are now used in cities in the state of Ohio.

In this darkest time of the year when mornings first light comes so late and the sun falls behind the horizon in afternoons, we long for Christmas light. We need candles of hope and the promise of peace that passes understanding and the source of deep joy. We are grateful for the anticipation of the celebration of the coming of the light of the world. The one whose birth was announced by angelic harbingers in a dark sky over a seemingly inconsequential town in Palestine with the words, Peace on earth!

In some traditions, the second week Advent candle which we call peace is called the Bethlehem candle. It is hard to believe that just a little over a year ago before COVID was a thing and the pandemic never entered conversations, a small group from this area worshipped in a trilingual service at Christmas Lutheran Church just off of Manger Square in Bethlehem. After the service and a quick visit to the crowded Church of the Nativity and a traditional Palestinian lunch, we loaded our big van to travel a short distance to the Shepherds Field located behind the Bethlehem YMCA.

We parked and then followed our guide down a meandering path around rocks and scrubby trees that few tourists traverse to the small opening of a cave overlooking the rocky hillside that looked impossible to sustain any flocks. It was that location that the local descendants of the shepherds identified as the place where generations before their sheep-tending relatives related how suddenly a dark night was interrupted by bright lights and angels declared the end to fear and announced that the promised Prince of Peace had been born in their neighborhood, the place where we had just walked.

We can be confident that the most important thing in human history happened that night long ago, and it is worth celebrating in every way possible, even if we are physically isolated and our gatherings are from a distance. This Advent, we are learning so much about how God takes us by surprise and uses the unexpected to accomplish his plan and purpose. In a time of unprecedented stress and anxiety, confusion and disorientation, we need the hope that God is still breaking into our dark places. What happened in Bethlehem certainly did not stay in Bethlehem!

Let us hear the words of assurance from heaven that echo throughout time that we do not need to be afraid! This dark year may we find the good news in the midst of all we are experiencing. We light the Advent candles of hope, and then peace which is our own Bethlehem candle, and add the light of joy and look forward celebrating the coming of the one who is love incarnate. The Savior child born so many years ago in a dimly lit little town in Palestine will be born over and over again in each one of our humble hearts.

Pro Football Hall of Famequarterback Kurt Warners journeyto Canton, Ohio, is a legendary one.

Before he became a star gunslinger for theSt. Louis Ramsand Arizona Cardinals, Warner had to prove himself in the Arena Football League. After failing to win a job backing up Brett Favre on the Green Bay Packers, Warner constantly tried getting back into the NFL.

Instead of joining NFL immortality, Warner could have starred for the Chicago Bears. That is, if not for a wedding and a spider.

After going undrafted in 1994, Kurt Warner spent that years preseason with the Green Bay Packers.

With Brett Favre already starting at quarterback, Warner had to beat out Mark Brunell and former Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer for a backup job. However, Green Bay cut Warner before the regular season began, and he went to Cedar Falls, Iowa, to stock shelves at a grocery store for $5.50 an hour.

Warner signed with the Iowa Barnstormers, an Arena Football League team, in 1995. He quickly became a star quarterback there and earned first-team All-Arena honors in 1996 and 1997.

The St. Louis Rams signed Warner to a futures contract after his brilliant 1997 season.

All Kurt Warner needed was an opportunity, and he more than took advantage.

Warner spent the 1998 season backing up Tony Banks on the St. Louis Rams. When new starter Trent Green suffered an injury in the 1999 preseason, Rams coach Dick Vermeil stuck with Warner and named him the starter.

Football fans can recite the rest of the story by heart. Warner won the NFL MVP Award and led the Rams to a Super Bowl victory over Steve McNair and the Tennessee Titans a few months later.

Warner held onto the starting job until he and the Rams parted ways following the 2003 season. From 1999-2001, Warner completed 67.2% of his passes for 12,612 yards, 98 touchdowns, and 53 interceptions in a Rams uniform.

Warner earned first-team All-Pro honors in 1999 and 2001, two seasons, which won him the MVP Award. Warner also nearly led the Rams to a second Super Bowl victory in February 2002.

Tom Brady and the Patriots famously began their first dynasty with a game-winning field goal to knock off Warner and the Rams.

In an alternate universe, Kurt Warner became an NFL legend in the Windy City rather than the Gateway to the West.

In a 2018 appearance on Undeniable with Joe Buck, Warner explained how he landed an opportunity with the Chicago Bears in 1997. Azcentral.com transcribed Warners comments.

I ran and told my wife that next Friday Im going to Chicago for a tryout with the Bears. She kind of looked at me funny and I asked her why arent you excited for me. She goes, Well, cause were getting married on Saturday, youre not going to Chicago the day before our wedding. When the Bears called, I forgot all about it!

If Warner had any hopes of meeting with the Bears after the ceremony, nature went and interfered. A spider bit Warner on his throwing elbow that weekend, and he couldnt throw at a tryout.

Warner later tried rescheduling with the Bears, but he never heard back. Less than a year later, Warner joined the St. Louis Rams, and the rest is history.

THE unbritaining of GB continues apace. Yet, one must wonder how long this metamorphosis will take. The Tory press and the Tory government seem to be in a delusional, faux jingoistic revelry at present. The jester stands up in the Commons and makes quips, refusing to answer in detail, which he can do with impunity because of the Tory English majority. The cudgels will come off through the power grab after December 31 as there will be no holds barred in centralising power again.

The US experience from the 18th century should be instructive. The blame for US independence was put on the monarch of the day, but it was the taxation power grab back by Westminster from the colonial assemblies think devolved legislatures in the US which gradually lit the fuse.

The same gung-ho psyche is beginning to come to the surface here. Johnsons attack on devolution, Rees-Moggs dream to restore the (unwritten) constitution and the rampant chumocracy, along with UK ministers increasingly autocratic decisions are disturbing.

In Scotland, the attack on Holyrood reveals that Labour and the LibDems, the two Unionist upholders of the devolved settlement, are showing either timidity in the face of the Tory onslaught or are willing to see Holyrood downgraded as they see this as an attack on the SNP, not on elected government of Scotland! Therein lies their mistake. It also reveals an underlying feeling that they know they are not going to take over in Holyrood in the immediate term.

They fail to see that they are equally despised by their Tory fellow Unionists. And so they are festering in a no mans land, hoping for the best.

Their kamikaze-reverence for the Union will be their continued demise, however, and they are blind to the dilemma they are in.

They cling to a vague hope of the Vow 2, when in reality England does not show any inclination to federate within itself, let alone across the UK. The old relics such as Brown

and others seem to believe their own political immortality and fail to see their days and nostrums are pass!

The test of GB cohesion among the population here, and the economic captains of industry and commerce, will be broken with the chaos at macro and micro level after December 31 irrespective of deal, low deal or No Deal.

The worries being expressed now by industry across the piste are rather late in coming. They are answered by the totemic utterance that we will have full control of our most important, overarching resource: fish.

In perspective, we cannot all relearn and relocate to fish. Without being pejorative, compared to our economic gross product it is a minnow.

If the macro planners do not evolve an integrated plan relative to all economic sectors, then fishing communities will also decline.

The present UK Government is not interested in the country, it is only aiming to enrich its chums and hangers-on and retain total power.

Scotland rejected at the last election totally the Tories and the Union. Let the band of non-Tory Unionists at Holyrood realise that their future and our future lies in leaving the Union.

Northern Ireland is already separated by an internal border which will become an international border between itself and England, and we need to follow on.

If not, then await the destruction or Balkanisation of Scotland ruled over by a Great England.

The argument for continued investment

C> is a high potential and maturing sector, and is an already crowded environment, playing host to numerous start-ups and now, through M&A, recognised big pharma firms. Much like the rush to find a COVID-19 vaccine that dominates headlines worldwide, not every company involved will be able to succeed.

But finnCaps finnLife watch list of 50 leading AIM-listed biotech companies demonstrates that there is room for numerous companies to contribute to, and profit from, C>. Examining three entirely different approaches to CAR-T therapy, it is possible to see just how much space there is for this exciting sector, therefore displaying the case for continued investment.

Innovative CAR-T therapy demonstrates the depth of C> potential

CAR-T therapy in its existing form is a relatively new and specialised approach at treating cancer. It takes T cells from a patients bloodstream and genetically modifies them in a laboratory. These T cells are then injected back into the bloodstream with the aim of targeting and killing cancer cells.

While it has been shown to be an effective treatment, there are risks and side effects. One is the two-step autologous process (the slow time it takes for cell expansion sometimes as long as two weeks) while another is cytokine release syndrome (CRS), which occurs when cytokine molecules are inadvertently released, but too quickly to target just the tumours and instead target healthy cells.

The next generation of CAR-T treatments shows that there is space for a multitude of start-ups to be active in the C> space as they all help find varied solutions to these problems without negating the effectiveness of CAR-T.

One example is Horizon Delivery, a company that is developing its CYAD-02 project, which will help transport T cells more effectively to the tumour via the use of SMARTvector products.

The product underwent its first phase 1 trial test in January 2020 with a patient who was suffering from acute myeloid leukaemia. Horizon Delivery is also an industry leader in CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) screenings, meaning they can identify key genes or genetic sequences that draw out specific functions of a cell type from thousands of potential variants.

In a cancer context, this means they can route out and exclusively eliminate problematic cells that may have shown signs theyd resist a future cancer treatment.

Another example is Maxcyte, a global cell- based therapies and life sciences company that is developing its CARMA process, where a patients peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) are removed and modified. The modified cells can then be used to target an array of different cancers.

Currently the company is conducting a phase 1 trial for advanced ovarian cancer in a dose escalation trial that will treat four separate cohorts the fourth of which was administered in March 2020.

Another example which shows the versatility of new CAR-T innovation is provided by Oxford Biomedica, a gene and cell therapy company specialising in the development of gene-based medicines.

Rather than a contained project or platform, its contribution to CAR-T is through a contract manufacturing development organisation. Collaborating with pharma companies, Oxford Biomedica uses its infrastructure to produce other companies licensed products, including Novartis Kymriah treatment (alongside other undisclosed CAR-T-related products).

With fast-moving innovation finally allowing multiple C> treatments to gain regulatory approval, along with a huge pipeline of upcoming therapies and an influx of funding and M&A activity, investing in C> no longer entails taking a bet on potential the future is finally here.

Cryptocurrency. Gene editing. 5G. Drones. We hear and report on these terms often.

But for the average person whos not well versed in these topics, they might just sound like tech-y jargon, or technology that exists solidly in the future. On the latter point: Yes, but not exclusively.

In a year when Bitcoin is much more than a buzzword, gene-editing tool CRISPR is influencing COVID-19research, 5G is frequently flashing on our screens and a kid you know probably got a drone for Christmas, these concepts must be widely understood.

Inspired by Explain like Im 5 genre of subreddit,Technical.ly spoke to four experts about what these technologies are and what they mean for our futures.

Dr. Eric Kmiec, the director of the ChristianaCare Gene Editing Institute in Newark, Delaware, says gene editing is a form of genetic medicine with the goal of correcting DNA mutations that lead to inherited disorders or cancer. Diseases such as sickle cell disease, cystic fibrosis and Pompes disease have been the early targets for clinical trials. In particular, the sickle cell disease trials going on have shown great promise.

Kmiec said gene editing could be looked at as a genetic spellchecker. Chromosomes are like the words in a sentence, and gene editing can help correct those words to make that sentence coherent, or in this case, healthy without the mutant or misspelled gene in the chromosome.

Lets say that the first word of the sentence is misspelled, that is the first gene along a string of genes in a chromosome, he said. We can design a CRISPR molecule to fix the misspelling of the gene in the chromosome with high precision and high efficiency. So far, the challenge has been that the CRISPR tool may occasionally act to aggressively and secondarily alter a single letter in the last word of the sentence, or a single base in the last gene along the string in the chromosome.

The field of gene editing is more than 30 years old, but Kmiec said the emergence of gene-editing tool CRISPR has made gene editing more accessible to people of various backgrounds.

Previously, the efficiency and precision with which mutations were repaired in the human chromosome were at a level that was not clinically relevant, he said. Today, CRISPR is changing that and molecular geneticists now believe that this tool will help us translate gene editing into a clinical reality.

Kmiec sees gene editing as an opportunity to change how health care is delivered to people. With many genetic diseases and forms of cancer currently lacking successful treatments, repairing genes at their roots could be the future of healthcare. With gene editing, healthcare pros will be able to attack health issues at their core.

Making this service equitable for all members of society is central to Kmiecs work at the Gene Editing Institute.

One big challenge lies in making sure that all socioeconomic levels of patients have access to such breakthrough technologies and that it is not simply reserved for those who can pay the price, he said. 5G is the most current generation of cellular tech and standards, following 4G, which gave cell phone users LTE. LTE was an integral part of the process that gave us internet on our smartphones and tens of megabits to support phone calls and texting.

5G is taking it to the next level of new technology, said Gizis, whose Philly-based networking software company makes an app to boost your mobile connection. But its not a disruptive technology. The innovator dilemma is to create all these opportunities for startups and 5G is mostly sustaining tech to help Verizon, AT&T and Apple do smartphone things even better.

Gizis explained that while 5G allows for faster speeds and better latency the time between user action and response its success is predicated upon the certain number of frequencies that cellular companies are allowed to employ.

The good bands like 1800 megahertz are full, he said. When you run 5G there is only so much bandwidth.

Gamers and fans of video calls are most likely to notice the difference between 4G and 5G service. Gizis said that 5G sends big blocks of data, allowing for faster responses in gaming. He predicts that a lot more smart devices like the Apple Watch will emerge in the next couple of years as technologists better understand and have the technology capable of taking advantage of 5G.

Exyn Technologies COO Ben Williams defines drones by their independence relative to tech systems. Regular drones are remotely controlled systems with active pilots for all or most of its actions. The term drone generally refers to a non-thinking device reliant upon direct input from a human operator or pilot.

When systems gain the capability to respond to their environments is where things get interesting. According to Williams, as drones become more autonomous, they begin to take on the capabilities of a robot.

The more clear-cut case is where a system is completely autonomous and no pilot is involved at any point of the flight; this type of autonomous system is a robot, he said.

Williams, whose Pennovation-based company uses drones and ground-based robots to collect data from places where GPS isnt accessible, said the significance of drones in terms of the future of technology exists in their potential as autonomous systems. He considers these systems to be the next obvious success of software that will enable digital processing.

Many modern companies are digital-first companies that can take advantage of massive distributed computing resources and highly advanced algorithms and systems to utilize data from across every aspect of their companies, he said. However these benefits are only within reach for those companies (like Google, Facebook, etc.) that can get all of that data into a computer system, and where the actions they want to take are digital in nature.

While digital-first companies will be at an advantage in employing autonomous systems, Williams said more traditional and analog companies that mostly exist in the physical world will have a harder time making the adjustment. Getting input data is difficult and acting upon can be even harder.

Exyn uses autonomous systems to gather massive datasets for analog industries that include mining, construction and logistics. Autonomous warehouse robots and delivery systems are seeing significant growth as their technology becomes more efficient.

Williams expects to see commercial and industrial companies begin to acquire thousands of these autonomous systems to collect data and take action based on the data acquired. Beyond digital systems, Exyn is already using robots to perform in dirty and dangerous environments.

One common use case for Exyn here is in underground mines where survey teams simply cant access some of the very dangerous environments without autonomous robots, he said. These systems allow the survey teams to greatly expand their access to previously inaccessible or very dangerous areas of the mines.

Mike McCoy, associate director of emerging technologies at health insurance company Humana, is passionate about the rise of cryptocurrency for good: He lectures on blockchain for health care,organizes the local and is the former Philly-based campus engagement lead at Brooklyn blockchain company ConsenSys.

He defines cryptocurrency as a monetary, digital asset that can be exchanged for value, like the U.S. dollar. It is protected by cryptography, and anyone worldwide can access it with a digital tool like a mobile device, laptop or browser using a digital node, or server. It is the first decentralized currency with no owner to be exchanged for goods and services in human history, he said.

McCoy said that cryptocurrency is the internets currency and provides more freedom than fiat (government-issued) currency like the American dollar. Just as tech startups have built profitable enterprises off of intangible concepts, cryptocurrency allows anyone to exchange value regardless of their race, ethnic background, gender or national origin.

Because cryptocurrency is sovereign resistant and designed to be decentralized, it does not need the power of any state or geographic body to enforce its value. McCoy said this allows for it empower the people that use it.

It allows for trustless transactions between humans without some king or authority or government or corporation having to be the validator of a transaction, he said. Its able to distribute wealth creation, wealth storage, and wealth protection from the state. And thats what cryptocurrencies really enable.

Bitcoin is currently the worlds best-known form of cryptocurrency, and McCoy considers it the digital gold standard. According to McCoy, people can divide up shares of Bitcoin to as many people as possible, as opposed to gold, which has a physical limit of who and how many people can have access to it. Its possibilities as a programmable currency also make it more flexible in distributing to others.

Privacy is one of cryptocurrencys advantages but also brings its own issues, McCoy said. While parts of it are private, it is not completely private and is barely a decade old, still leaving much to the imagination for people interested in its use.

Its only from 2009, he said. People dont know if itll be around forever. But every year Bitcoin and cryptocurrency survives and goes through one of the various challenges facing it and the currency becomes more valuable as people entrust more of their time, computational power and native currencies into it.

Repurposing a proven gene therapy approach to treat, prevent COVID-19 – Penn Today

When did you first start using AAV vectors in your gene therapy work?

It came about 10 years ago when I was helping the Gates Foundation develop an approach for preventing HIV. Any attempt to use a traditional vaccine, where you inject a component of the virus to activate the immune system to develop proteins such as antibodies, had been challenging for HIV. Regardless of what you used to immunizebecause the virus changed so muchmost of it would escape. Once the field realized that, we started to look at other approaches, and it turns out its possible in the lab to engineer an antibody that could be effective against many types of HIV.

HIV represents a different type of pandemic than COVID-19. When did you turn to AAV vectors as a potential approach for other kinds of pandemics?

About eight years ago I started thinking about this as a countermeasure for a pandemic. The pandemics that we worry about are primarily transmitted through a respiratory route. If it were direct contact like Ebola virus, its not as dangerous because you can avoid touching one another. But if you cant even be in the same room, thats a problem.

Respiratory viruses enter our body through the nose and throat. Thats how we get infected. We proposed delivering the vector through a nasal mist or spray to engineer the cells that line the nose and throat to express the antibody. If you can localize this at that site to prevent the virus from going farther, then you dont need the whole body to express the antibodies.

The antibodies youre using, called casirivimab and imdevimab, are monoclonal antibodies, meaning they were created in a lab. Can you describe how they work?

Regeneron developed these. Theyre highly active and potent against SARS-CoV-2. For treatment, antibodies can be useful. If youre starting to get sick, you get an infusion or two of the antibodies and then you dont get sicker. But what do you do with 99% of the population who isnt sick and never gets sick? Our idea was to use an AAV vector expressing the antibodies to engineer someones cells to produce the antibodies. If we do this right, the expression could go on for a long period of time. Its a one-time vector infusion.

We were able to show in animal models that an AAV sprayed into the nose that expresses an antibody is effective against flu virus that causes respiratory diseases and has the potential to cause a pandemic. The treated animals were completely protected when exposed to flu virus. Its all about having the right antibody and then engineering a delivery system to have this blockage. We call it a bioshield. It could be a way to stop COVID-19 in its tracks.

Would this approach replace COVID-19 vaccines or be used in conjunction with them?

Theoretically, it could be used in place of a vaccine, but I suspect that traditional vaccines are going to succeed for a lot of people. We see our approach being deployed in individuals for which traditional vaccines may not work as well, patients with diseases that compromise their immune system such as cancer, patients who are on immune-modulating drugs, or even the elderly.

Early data seem to suggest that the elderly have some level of response to the active COVID-19 vaccine, but, like with many other vaccines, older people dont mount the same immune response as those who are younger. That said, I dont see any reason why receiving a traditional vaccine would preclude one from using our nasal spray because they do two different things.

The other possibility is that the COVID-19 vaccines we have become less effective because the virus changes. I dont think this will happen, and I hope it doesnt, but, if it does, the question becomes, Would the antibodies that Regeneron created become a backup? When we roll out an active vaccine based on a single spike protein into large populations, it creates pressure on the SARS-CoV-2 to change and potentially become resistant. I hope a variant doesnt emerge, but I do think it behooves us to have some redundancy in place to squelch a potential second wave due to resistant coronaviruses.

What is your projected timeline?

We are conducting one final experiment over the holiday break and in early January before we submit our request to the FDA for clinical trials. Weve had discussions with the FDA and have already done some of the initial testing, including safety testing in nonhuman primates, as well as preparing to manufacture the product. Conducting this in the Gene Therapy Program is beneficial since we are comfortable with AAV vectors and moving them into clinical trials. We support up to eight traditional AAV gene therapy programs a year, and we have the staff and technology to move pretty quickly.

If we get the go in January, I think our technology could contribute to the global response in eliminating COVID-19. And you have to understand, until we eliminate it globally, we havent actually eliminated it.

About Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a rare, life-shortening genetic disease affecting approximately 75,000 people worldwide. CF is a progressive, multi-system disease that affects the lungs, liver, GI tract, sinuses, sweat glands, pancreas and reproductive tract. CF is caused by a defective and/or missing CFTR protein resulting from certain mutations in the CFTR gene. Children must inherit two defective CFTR genes one from each parent to have CF. While there are many different types of CFTR mutations that can cause the disease, the vast majority of all people with CF have at least one F508del mutation. These mutations, which can be determined by a genetic test, or genotyping test, lead to CF by creating non-working and/or too few CFTR proteins at the cell surface. The defective function and/or absence of CFTR protein results in poor flow of salt and water into and out of the cells in a number of organs. Patients should talk to their doctor to learn if they have an indicated CF gene mutation.It is not known if SYMDEKO is safe and effective in children under 6 years of age.

What is TRIKAFTA?

TRIKAFTA is a prescription medicine used for the treatment of cystic fibrosis (CF) in patients aged 12 years and older who have at least one copy of the F508del mutation in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene or another mutation that is responsive to treatment with TRIKAFTA. Patients should talk to their doctor to learn if they have an indicated CF gene mutation. It is not known if TRIKAFTA is safe and effective in children under 12 years of age.

Patients should not take KALYDECO, SYMDEKO, or TRIKAFTA if they take certain medicines or herbal supplements, such as: the antibiotics rifampin or rifabutin; seizure medications such as phenobarbital, carbamazepine, or phenytoin; or St. Johns wort.

Before taking KALYDECO, SYMDEKO, or TRIKAFTA, patients should tell their doctor about all of their medical conditions, including if they: have kidney problems;have or have had liver problems; are pregnant or plan to become pregnant because it is not known if KALYDECO, SYMDEKO, or TRIKAFTA will harm an unborn baby; or are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed because it is not known if KALYDECO, SYMDEKO, or TRIKAFTA passes into breast milk. Before taking KALYDECO, patients should tell their doctor if they drink grapefruit juice or eat grapefruit.

KALYDECO, SYMDEKO, or TRIKAFTA may affect the way other medicines work, and other medicines may affect how KALYDECO, SYMDEKO, or TRIKAFTA work. Therefore, the dose of KALYDECO, SYMDEKO, or TRIKAFTA may need to be adjusted when taken with certain medications. Patients should especially tell their doctor if they take antifungal medications such as ketoconazole, itraconazole, posaconazole, voriconazole, or fluconazole; or antibiotics such as telithromycin, clarithromycin, or erythromycin.

KALYDECO, SYMDEKO, or TRIKAFTA can cause dizziness in some people who take it. Patients should not drive a car, use machinery, or do anything that needs them to be alert until they know how KALYDECO, SYMDEKO, or TRIKAFTA affects them.

Patients should avoid food or drink containing grapefruit while taking KALYDECO, SYMDEKO or TRIKAFTA.

KALYDECO, SYMDEKO, and TRIKAFTA can cause serious side effects, such as:

High liver enzymes in the blood have been reported in patients receiving KALYDECO, SYMDEKO, or TRIKAFTA. The patients doctor will do blood tests to check their liver before starting treatment with KALYDECO, SYMDEKO, or TRIKAFTA, every 3 months during the first year of treatment, and every year while on treatment. Patients should call their doctor right away if they have any of the following symptoms of liver problems: pain or discomfort in the upper right stomach (abdominal) area; yellowing of their skin or the white part of their eyes; loss of appetite; nausea or vomiting; or dark, amber-colored urine.

Abnormality of the eye lens (cataract) in some children and adolescents treated with KALYDECO, SYMDEKO, or TRIKAFTA. If the patient is a child or adolescent, their doctor should perform eye examinations before and during treatment with KALYDECO, SYMDEKO, or TRIKAFTA to look for cataracts.

The most common side effects of KALYDECO include headache; upper respiratory tract infection (common cold), which includes sore throat, nasal or sinus congestion, and runny nose; stomach (abdominal) pain; diarrhea; rash; nausea; and dizziness.

The most common side effects of SYMDEKO include headache, nausea, sinus congestion, and dizziness.

The most common side effects of TRIKAFTA include headache, diarrhea, upper respiratory tract infection (common cold) including stuffy and runny nose, stomach (abdominal) pain, inflamed sinuses, increase in liver enzymes, increase in a certain blood enzyme called creatine phosphokinase, rash, flu (influenza), and increase in blood bilirubin.

Its been a big year for blockchain, highlighted by Eth 2.0, the rise, fall and resurrection of decentralized finance (DeFi) andthe real steps towards adoption by institutions like PayPal. But the steady rise of the humble non-fungible token (NFT) has been the real hidden hero.

NFTs are little bits of code that extend the fundamental innovation of hard-capped supply, self-custody and censorship-resistance to all digital assets, not just to money. This is vital. NFTs enable any unique asset or item to be tracked and traded with all the same freedoms as its fungible token counterpart. While this asset class is still nascent, the potential is utterly astounding.

Take the $100 billion video game items industry. In the last three years alone, weve seen nine figures in venture capital invested in blockchain companies competing for its disruption.Other NFT verticals are quickly emerging. In 2020, there was an explosion of digital art and tokenized custody startups: everything from sneakers to Czanne to Saint Laurent are now being wrapped up, sold and traded as unique and individual NFTs.

The power of NFT ownership isnt limited to gaming or art. Any illiquid or unique asset globally could benefit from this technological standard. Financial assets? Check. Commodities like diamonds? Check. The 3% timeshare of a boat you bought, have regretted ever since and cant find a buyer for? You bet. The total addressable market is, quite literally, in the trillions.

NFTs are a rapidly emerging asset class with an Achilles heel: scalability. Like most other cryptographic tools, NFTs greatest weakness comes from the codes deployment in the real world. Limited transaction throughput, high transaction fees and slow transaction time are all muting this immutable technologys revolution.

Different blockchains are doggedly fighting to solve this issue and establish themselves as the home of unique digital assets. But the wrong choice will hand the reins of this future to a centralized and insecure solution, destroying the possibility of a truly community owned future.

The battle over ownership

Everyone wants to own the network and users on which NFTs live and trade. Its a big pie, and there are lots of people who want a slice. But the pie doesnt scale.

Trading an NFT is insanely more expensive than an ordinary fungible token. If you trade a million ERC-20s, it costs the same as trading one, while a million NFT trades will cost you a million times more.These scarce digital assets are also inherently illiquid, because every NFT is an individual order-book. If there are 15 million gods unchained cards out there, theres 15 million individual markets, each with their own bids and asks.

Everything from sneakers to Czanne to Saint Laurent are now being wrapped up, sold and traded as unique and individual NFTs.

Better tech will provide better scalability and liquidity without requiring trade-offs in decentralization or security. A swathe of layer 1 and layer 2 solutions are all scrambling to upgrade their tech to lay claim as the default home of NFTs.

So, whos in the running?

VC-backed layer 1s

Over the past year weve seen many ETH-killers come to the party, and many of them have impressive-sounding tech and hundreds of millions in savvy VC funding. New blockchains like Flow and TRON have publicly claimed they want to be the home of all NFTs or gaming and have built up handsome IP partnerships to do so.

Their weaponry? In the end, the blockchain trilemma still applies: the only fundamental scaling boosts come from a reduction in security, decentralization or both. While this is always an individual decision, its imperative users know what theyre trading off.

The emperors new sidechains

Sidechains are trying to operate on existing L1s (predominantly Ethereum) in order to provide a low-security scalability option to NFTs. Namely Matic, Ronin, xDai. However, these scaling solutions are fundamentally achieving this throughput by removing the security and decentralization properties that are necessary to support highly valuable assets. Whats the point?

Rollup: Immutable X and Optimism

It wouldnt be an op-ed without an opinion, and thankfully, mine is shared by someone much smarter than me.

In the short term, I just dont see rollups as being one choice among many things; I see them as being the only choice.

Pens over swords

Todays wars arent fought with force, theyre fought with information. Token holders and expensive PR campaigns evangelize their chosen champions tech with a religious and one-eyed zeal. Anonymous personalities on Twitter become overnight thought leaders (and sometimes stick around long enough to see their predictions validated).

But this marketing comes at a cost: Users have to know what deals theyre giving away when they use a piece of technology. We are at dire risk of letting the future of digital asset ownership, NFTs, be run by a centralized operator, a VC-owned blockchain or fundamentally insecure tech.

If were serious about getting major league developers and financial institutions to consider NFTs, its not enough to just make a high frequency marketplace. The future home for NFTs needs to be secure and censorship-resistant at its core, like Ethereum is today, and be able to securely support a billion dollar item economy.

Over the past six months, so-called Eth killers have announced their intention to draw liquidity to other chains for NFTs. Right now, crypto-developers, gamers and artists are actively being marketed to leave Ethereum. But the moment is even more critical than that. Whoever wins the NFT blockchain wars will become the default network of all future gaming, entertainment and collectible applications.

Blockchain trends in 2021: Expect the unexpected – Finextra

The year 2020 has almost come to an end. It has been a historically tough year for many. A number of events happened that were not included nor expected in my and many others - 2020 blockchain trends. Especially the COVID-19 pandemic that not only intensified trends that were already underway, but also generated new trends.

It is a tradition to focus my last blog on what to expect for the next year. We will look at the top trends we may expect for the blockchain and cryptocurrency landscape to watch out for 2021 and beyond? So, how will the landscape be look like for blockchain technology in the years to come?

1 Global blockchain market size will exponentially grow

What was not forecasted is that blockchain technology exploded in popularity this year. Businesses from a multitude of industries showed a growing interest to adopt this technology for enhancing their business processes. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the digital transformation drive in many areas, especially via the use of blockchain or distributed ledger technology.

As a result the global blockchain market size is expected to expand from USD 3.0 billion in 2020 to USD 39.7 billion by 2025, at an effective Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 67.3% during 20202025.

Expectations for 2021 are positive It is estimated that next year, at least 25 percent of theForbes Global 2000will use blockchain as a foundation for digital trust at scale.

2. Covid-19 will further accelerate blockchain transition

We will see a reorientation of the various blockchain projects. Experts predict that 90% of blockchain projects will require replacement within a year.

That is because most are ignoring key features such as tokenization, smart contracts, and decentralised consensus. Next to that, the pandemic has caused more realistic and pragmatic approaches to blockchain initiatives specifically focused on the day-to-day business to continue their growth path. Blockchain projects with clear benefits are expected to do that next year at an even faster pace. There has also been an uptick in the number of companies interested in participating in networks that specifically help to address some of the supply chain issues that the pandemic has put forward.

3. Long-term strategic projects will be put on hold

Volatility and uncertainty sparked by COVID-19 has led many corporates to pull back from some of their more long-term DLT-related projects for the time being. These long-term strategic projects, in particular those requiring changes to market structure or regulatory changes, are mostly working to extended timetables now. Budgets for purely experimental and R&D projects run in isolation from the business- are becoming harder to obtain and have been cut this year. And this will cause an even larger number of these projects will be put on hold.

4. Corporates need to accelerate their digital transformation

Digital transformation is no longer a choice for businesses - it is essential to survival.Due to the increased strain that the COVID-19 pandemic put on day-to-day business, there is a dire need at corporates to accelerate their digital transformation process to emerge stronger than before. Blockchaintechnology is very likely to make the most transformative and dramatic changes in the way businesses function, during the coming years. Many industries are therefore intensively looking at blockchain as a helpful tool to become all the more digital.

5. Globally, 30% of projects will make it into production.

It is forecasted that a growing number of blockchain-based projects will switch to the production stage. This number doesnt just reflect the more realistic approach to projects and the increasing maturity of the technology but also the pandemic-induced acceleration and initiation of projects that may bring measurable benefit within a short timescale. According to Gartner more than 40% of the surveyed corporates has at least one blockchain pilot running. They predict that 30% of global projects will make it into production, partly due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The majority of networks that transition from pilot to production will thereby run on private enterprise blockchain platforms.

6. Private (permissioned) blockchains will dominate

Another trend we will observe is that private blockchains will become the main contributor to the blockchain market growth and are assumed to retain the largest market size in 2021. Enterprise blockchain solutions are developed customized according to a corporates business needs. Private blockchain provide more opportunities to corporates in terms of utilizing the blockchain technology for business-to-business use cases. They deliver higher efficiency, privacy, reliability, and transparency, while security is provided to a private blockchain using private keys that are known only to authorized persons in the organization.

7. China will make the fastest progress

From a regional perspective China is leading the global blockchain game and will continue this role in 2021. Blockchain is taking China to the level, which is well beyond the present reach of other global market players. China's new infrastructure" national initiative, its state-backed Blockchain Based Service Network, is aimed to make blockchain an integral part of the country's digital infrastructure. China's further ambition is to provide a global public infrastructure via this Network. Beyond that, while other countries or regions like Europe are thinking to launch their own Digital currency, China is almost ready to issue their Crypto yuan.

8. The banking and financial sector further dominates the market

Amongst all the industries affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the financial sector is one area that has been hit particularly hard. Falling profits and tightening margins have forced banks to adapt and increasingly meet their customers need in a growing digital world. The adoption of fintech and blockchain technology, enables them to streamline their operations and modernize their operations. This may lead to a firm growth in contactless transactions and redesigned financial services. The banking and financial sector is expected to show exponential growth in blockchain adoption in the coming years. As a result this sector is going to hold the largest market size in the global blockchain market during the coming years.

9. Growing DLT-offerings by non-traditional financial institutions

Another trend we will see during 2021, and also triggered by COVID-19, is the rise in the number of non-traditional financial institutions. They will be triggered by a growing number of corporates but also consumers that are going more into online blockchain-based mode of transactions and financial services. These groups nowadays have more non-bank options delivered by institutions ranging from non-bank lenders, to crypto-currency based banks to fully decentralised financial (DEFI) services alternatives.

10. Fast upcoming trends: DEFI ..

Next to a firm acceleration that is expected in the acceptance of tokenisation i.e. the digital storage of assets on blockchain, another interesting upcoming trend in 2021 and further on will be DEFI or decentralised financial services. If we look at DEFI it shows how blockchain could be used for financial use cases which up till now has been the missing point for enterprise blockchain offerings. DEFI illustrates successful process of smart contracts for financial services. This alternative form of financing perfectly fits into the fintechisation of the economy.

This year we already have seen a firm rose of DEFI services. The total value of fulltime decentralised financial services (based on cryptocurrencies) witnessed an impressive growth and even surpassed USD 10 billion. It is seen to be further speeding up in 2021 and beyond.

11. and ZKP

Another important trend we may see in 2021 is the arrival of Zero Knowledge Proof (ZKP). ZKPs are urgently needed to meet challenges with preserving confidentiality that are currently holding blockchain projects back. Blockchain-based ZKPs allow companies with different record-keeping systems to be verifiably in sync on a record-by-record basis without sharing sensitive information. Much progress has been made recently around ZKPs. There are increasingly coming all sorts of solutions on the market to deploy ZKPs in a broad way. For instance to put mortgage requests on blockchain and, via ZKPs as a sort of notary, automatically grant or reject such a request. Big challenge however remains the complexity of the developments. ZKPs are much more complex to develop than coding a smart contract without privacy, but for security reasons corporates are expected to shift from developing DApps to developing ZApps.

12. Cryptocurrencies may reach new heights

2020 has proven to be a good year for all crypto markets, and expectations are for 2021 to be even a better year for Bitcoin and other cryptos. These cryptocurrencies have taken center stage as investors search for new safe haven assets, driven by the COVID-19 pandemic. With so much uncertainty in the market, and being largely unaffected by external factors like government policy thanks to its decentralized nature, Bitcoin has proven itself to be a valuable form of digital gold, qualifying itself as one of the strongest players in the digital currency world. As we enter 2021 and adopt to a new normal, social distancing and cashless transactions may further set the stage for cryptocurrencies. However, with the constant fluctuations in the crypto space, anything could be expected.

13. Crypto fraud is rising

While 2020 being great year for investments incryptocurrencies, the downside is a firm rise in crypto frauds. Global crypto exchanges, have suffered high-profile hacks, whereas hacks on decentralized finance (DeFi) companies accounted for more than 20% of the total theft volume in 2020. Expectations are that this will continue during 2021. We may see various types of cyber fraud, including fake crypto investment platforms, fake crypto wallet scams, new forms of malware targeting lesser-known cryptocurrencies and crypto-jacking.

14. The number of CBDC projects will accelerate

There is a proliferation of central banks worldwide that are exploring the possible launch of their own central bank digital currency (CBDC). According to a recent BIS report 80% of central banks worldwide are researching the pros and cons of such a currency. This process will further intensify in 2021, driven by the diminishing use of cash, the digitalisation of the economy, the upcoming of private digital currencies like Libra etc. The Chinese government is well in advance, recently indicating to accelerate their process triggered by COVID-19. They have already executed dozens of experiments amongst citizens and corporates and are even ready for a worldwide roll-out. The ECB will take a clear decision on their Digital euro project mid-2021.

15. Governments Will Tighten Regulations Related to FinTech

A final trend we will see in 2021 and beyond is that regulators will intensify their search for stricter and tighter regulation. Long time being absent, governments around the world are sure to implement a myriad of fintech regulations over the next few years. The growing digitalisation of the economy triggered by the COVID-pandemic is an issue that is now narrowly monitored by regulators worldwide. Digital banking, cryptocurrency, and blockchain will likely be the greatest topics of concern.

As an increasing number of finance transactions occur outside of traditional institutions and mechanisms, issues like DEFI cannot be ignored anymore by regulators. Meanwhile, European Union legislators are pursuing an EU-wide regulatory system for crypto assets markets, including the proliferation of token investments as a sophisticated investing vehicle.
