Ewan McGregor Once Nearly Broke His Hand Acting With Former ‘Mandalorian’ Star Gina Carano – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Star Wars actor Ewan McGregor and Gina Carano once worked together before they were a part of the same franchise. As some may know, Carano and McGregor collaborated on the 2011 spy thriller Haywire, where Carano portrayed a secret agent. At one point McGregor accidentally struck Carano while filming a scene. But it did more damage to McGregor than Carano.

Carano had a prolific career as an MMA fighter before she transitioned over to Hollywood. Her first leading role was in the 2011 film Haywire, in which Oceans 11 director Steven Soderbergh cast her. Carano once explained that it was her last MMA fight with Cris Cyborg that caught Soderberghs attention. Even though shed lost the match, she left enough of an impression on the Oscar-nominated filmmaker to star in his spy thriller.

After I lost my fight to Cyborg he came out on a train from LA to San Diego and had a little lunch with me, she once told Den of Geek. We had talked and then at the end of the lunch he was like look, I wanna do a film with you. Theres no actors and theres no script, theres no studio attached to it, I just wanted to meet with you and see if youd be interested in anything like that and I was just likeI said yes!

The ex-Mandalorian star admitted she didnt know who the director was at the time, but she knew his films.

Yeah, I was with his films, I just didnt know who he was. Really I didnt know what it was that was involved with making films. I didnt know that the director is the guy with the vision. I just never thought about it, I guess. But it was definitely a Film 101 school for me, all of Haywire, she said.

Haywire was rounded out by a cast that consisted of Ewan McGregor, Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender and Bill Paxton. McGregor in particular ended up doing a very physical scene with Carano that resulted in him accidentally striking the former fighter.

The only time I got hurt was when I punched Gina Carano in the head by accident, McGregor once told E-News.

But the Trainspotting actor revealed that he hurt himself more than he did his co-star.

I had a series of three punches, but the third onefor one reason or another I connected really hard on the side of her head, he continued. She was the one who got straight up and said, Are you OK? She was asking me if I was OK! But she was right because I almost broke my friggin hand!

Meanwhile, McGregor informed that Carano was absolutely fine.

Carano may have already had the physical requirements Soderbergh was looking for in his Haywire star. But he still went the extra mile to make sure Carano was psychologically prepared for the role. To do this, The Informant filmmaker had a real-life secret agent follow Carano around, and even considered kidnapping her.

Like method acting They put me with an ex-Mossad, thats like a solider and hed never done a movie either. So hes all excited, putting me through this training. So he puts a Gps (Global Positioning System) on my car and jumps me outside a hair salon, Carano once said according to Contact Music. He wanted to kidnap me but Steven Soderbergh said that would have been a little excessive. Is this how movies are made? Im quite paranoid now.

Ronda Rousey Will Only Return To MMA For Gina Carano Fight – The Source Magazine

Never say never, right.

It has been seven years since the last time iconic MMA fighter Ronda Rousey (12-2-0) stepped into the octagon. When asked about a possible return to MMA during the Kurt Angle Show last Sunday (June 12), Rousey revealed theres only one fight shed be interested in returning to competition for Gina Carano.

MORE: SOURCE SPORTS: Ronda Rousey Says Ungrateful Fans is Why She Left WWE

Theres only one person theres only one person I would come back for, Rousey told Kurt Angle.I mean, Ive said it a million times. Its not like its something new. (Id come back) for Gina, man Gina Carano. Shes the reason why I got into fighting. Shes the reason why I knew it was a possibility. I will always be forever grateful. If she ever was like, Ronda, I want to fight you tomorrow at 205 pounds like, whatever the hell shed want. Im not saying shes 205 pounds; shes very svelte.

Rousey continued: If she wanted to come into my backyard and do the Rocky thing, you know, Ding-ding, and we just do it in the backyard, I dont care. I will fight Gina wherever she wants. And if she doesnt want to, forever, I will leave that offer there. Its a respect thing, not like a, F*ck you, Im coming to get you. Its just like, Hey, if you ever want to pull that card out, its there. I love her. Thank you, Gina, for everything youve done.

Gina Carano, 40, retired from MMA in 2009 after her first loss against current Bellator MMA champ Cristiane Cyborg Justino at Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg in August 2009. Transitioning to acting shortly after defeat, Carano is recognized as the pioneer of womens MMA.

Rousey has had no interest in returning to MMA for a final bout since her loss to Amanda Nunes at UFC 207 in December 2016. In her prime, Rousey was the face of the womens UFC division. A reigning champion from 2013 to 2015, she headlined five UFC events with her first against Liz Carmouche at UFC 157 in February 2013.

In 2019, Carano shared with ESPN that a potential super fight with Rousey was presented to her a fight Rousey always wanted with a million-dollar offer to fight a then-undefeated Rousey; however, didnt materialize because of Dana White according to Carano.

Carano told ESPNs Ariel Helwani: When Ronda Rousey became popular, I remember they (Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta) had finally called for a meeting, and I walked in this restaurant, and they looked like these two big muscly guys at the table in like the middle of Hollywood. I remember thinking, What took you guys so long? Ive been what took you so long? So they were like, OK, wed love to offer you a million dollars. Wed love to have that fight. And I was like, Well, that sounds great, but Im going to need you to do me a favor, then, because Ive been acting, Im not active in any gym. So its going to take me, you know, youre going to have to give me some time to build a team or join a team.

Its no secret that the idea of Rousey versus Carano would easily be one of the biggest fights in MMA history and draw record-breaking Pay-Per-Views buy. Unfortunately in combat sports, super fights often fall through due to a variety of reasons, ranging from money to politics to proper preparation.

And its not an easy thing, as Im sure all the fighters know, Carano continued. You have to find a team or build one thats going to be into what youre doing, and if you havent actively been a part of anything, you can walk in as Gina Carano or whoever, but youre still going to have to find the people who are really going to be there for you, and that takes time. So I told them, You got to be able to just sit on this for about six months, Dana. You cant say anything and let me get situated with that, because that sounds great and Id love to do it. So it was a nice dinner, and we all left positive. I left stoked, and I was like, OK, well this makes sense. This is my moment to come and be back in there.

Fans of the two icons have created dream fight simulations that showcased possible outcomes in support of the UFCs UFC 2 video game. You may watch the full womens bantamweight dream bout above via EA Sports.

Since the UFC, Rousey has become a WWE Superstar and the current Smackdown Womens Champion, alongside a flourishing acting career with roles in blockbuster film franchises Fast and Furious and Expandables.

A new breed of General Counsel with digital transformation skills are gaining top roles – Digital Journal

Office working looking at an Excel spreadsheet. Image by Tim Sandle

Has the business world reached the tipping point for contract lifecycle management (CLM) adoption in the enterprise? If so, what does this mean for the enterprise and in-house legal teams? To gain an insight Digital Journal caught up with Andy Wishart, Contract Lifecycle Management Futurist and Agilofts Chief Product Officer.

Wishart is a widely recognized industry expert in developing contract management software and AI to enhance lawyer productivity through smart and easy-to-use solutions.

Wishart outlines six enterprise contract trends for how legal automation is altering the face of contract management worldwide.

General Counsels that Embrace the Cyborg Rise to the Top

Wishart: Its happened to other leadership professions. The best digital hunter wins, and CROs and CMOs who dont have a world-class tech stack to hunt, nurture, track, and analyze every step of their prospects journey from cold to sold, will lose out to the competition. They must have the appetite to understand deeply how the tech can deliver value for their business and fight for the right budgets and resources, or they simply can no longer hold these roles.

The same is true for General Counsels, as they drive priorities for their organizations. As automation has swept through operations, sales, marketing, and other critical functions, legal is one of the last bastions to be automatedand the age and expectation of instant visibility into a corporations risk and contractual obligations has dawned.

Legal pros who fail to push for and embrace digital transformation, which has accelerated from years to months in the pandemic, are in existential peril in their roles. The legal leaders who embrace the cyborg and bring their legal prowess together with the efficiency and intelligence of todays legal automation solutions are the only leaders who will advance in todays market.

Companies with Tweet Shift Contract Nimbleness Win the Market

Wishart: Weve just navigated through the worst of a pandemic, which still lingers and continues to shape business practices worldwide. We are all watching the devastating situation in the Ukraine. Weve just watched the worlds richest person buy a major corporation in a matter of days.

And in all those situations, organizations have been in a mad scramble to adjustto survive, to manage risk, to cancel contracts, to shift regions, to add new suppliers, to understand ramifications, and be instantly nimble. In a single tweet, markets can change, unrest can happen, and nimbleness and agility has taken on a new dimension. In 2022, your business needs to be able to shift on a tweet.

Bad Contract Processes Sink NPS Scores

Wishart: Insider info says one major corporation had a negative NPS, which was bad enoughbut an estimated 10 points of that was driven by a burdensome, frustrating, non-automated contract process that created a poor customer experience. Essentially no one can do business with anyone without a contract. And nearly all corporations are judged by their NPS scorecustomers choose vendors by them; investors make investments based on them. If your contract process is not streamlined, simplified, and world-class, youre behind before you even get started and your NPS scores will show it. Contracts truly are the DNA upon which your relationships with customers are built.

Recent results of global enterprise study show awareness of the criticality of CLM to customer satisfaction is indeed, on the rise, with improving customer satisfaction and ease of doing business coming as a top 5 strategic priority for CLM.

Legal Tech Efficiencies Fill Revenue Gap Caused by Slowing Global Growth

Wishart: Global forces like the pandemic, war, supply bottlenecks, and inflation are expected to decelerate global growth from 5.5% to 4.1% in 2022, according to the World Bank. While challenging, as companies look to not only survive but thrive in challenging headwinds, legal teams can confidently turn to the power of automation to enhance their ability to improve productivity in managing contracts. According to World Commerce & Contracting, companies using CLM could save an average of 9.2% a year in annual revenue that is typically lost to slow negotiations and missed milestones. And for larger organizations, that percentage is often 15%.

The hunger for revenue protection for legal teams is gaining ground. In a global study of enterprise buyers on CLM, 65% of respondents are focused on improving productivity as a key driver in purchasing CLM solutions to increase productivity and stop revenue leaks.

Legal Tech Pros Take on Unicorn Status

Wishart: Ten years ago, hiring a Salesforce administrator was nearly impossible. Employees who could optimize what had quickly become the system of record for companies worldwide were some of the hottest tickets in the market. With the advent of marketing automation and account-based marketing (ABM) tools, demand generation pros have become the new corporate darlings, drawing multiple offers and soaring salaries as the market scrambles to source from a talent base that is growing, but still small given these technologies have literally exploded on the scene.

That heat is moving to legal ops. As with any technology that has the potential to transform a profession, ensuring youre building and sourcing the right talent is key to your digital transformation, along with having the resources and talent to really put it to work for youand to date, many dont and are at risk. In 2021, Deloittes State of Legal Operations Survey found that only 35% of legal teams believe they have good tech skills.

Integrations that can Sluice Data Through Your Organization Win

Wishart: Data, when its trapped in your contracts and in file cabinets, holds unbelievable value for your organization. Having a line of sight to risk and business obligations lets you and every function in your business make better, more nimble business decisions that help companies grow, sending resources in new directions and holding back in others. The trouble is, without a CLM to unlock that data, and more important, be able to share that data with other solutions in its network ecosystem, its difficult to actually put that information into action. Thats why, like trapped water, CLM systems that can integrate not only seamlessly but widely with todays common enterprise solutions and let data sluice easily into other technologies are the most powerful. Sure, integration speed is importantbut thats table stakes. Todays most powerful CLMs need to connect hundreds, not handfuls of systems, and easily let data flow throughout the organization where it can truly help the business grow.

Fantasy footballs first tier: A refresher on why the top picks this year are so good – The Athletic

With the 2022 season on the horizon, I thought it would be helpful for fantasy general managers to brush away some cobwebs and remember why the elite are worthy of the top picks. Skill, opportunity, athleticism and even new additions at quarterback should help these top-tier players keep their gold status.

Christian McCaffrey, RB, Carolina Panthers

Everyone has seen what McCaffrey can do at the height of his powers: 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 receiving. Although Carolina still has issues at quarterback, McCaffrey did not need stellar QB play to go 1K/1K, so theres no reason to believe struggles at the position could stop him from doing it again. He will get plenty of carries, and the targets will still be there. Expect McCaffrey to get somewhere between 20 and 25 touches per game. Never forget that in his seven-game sample last season, he averaged 4.5 yards per rush and 9.3 yards per reception. If he would have played a full season, he would have recorded another 2,000-yard-plus campaign.

Austin Ekeler, RB, Los Angeles Chargers

Ekeler is McCaffrey Lite, but he finally played a full season as a starter, and the results were undeniable. He was just shy of 1,000 yards rushing and added 70 receptions with over 600 yards receiving. Two years ago, those numbers were flipped; he had over 500 yards rushing and 92 receptions with close to 1,000 yards receiving. And last year he added 20 touchdowns. He is a points per reception (PPR) gold mine and plays in an offense tailor-made for his skill set. Is he the best runner in the league? No. Is he the best receiver? No. But Ekeler is good at both, and because of the weapons around him, he gets to operate in relative space.

Alvin Kamara, RB, New Orleans Saints

With a healthy Jameis Winston under center last season, Kamara was RB5 and well on his way to a repeat performance of 2020, when he ran for 900-plus yards, hauled in 83 receptions for over 700 yards and scored 21 touchdowns. Without Winston, though, the entire offense was disjointed, the quarterback position was unsettled, and Kamaras receiving numbers and touchdowns suffered. The positive takeaway is Kamara looked strong while carrying the football 240 times (the highest total of his career). Even with the additions the Saints made at receiver, look for Kamaras receiving numbers to climb back toward his career pace. More competent quarterback play and more weapons on the perimeter means there is less attention on the box, which will likely open things up further for Kamara.

Jonathan Taylor, RB, Indianapolis Colts

Who needs receptions when youre carrying the ball 332 times for 1,800 yards and 18 touchdowns? Those numbers alone would have Taylor as the top PPR running back coming into the season, but just for fun, add 40 receptions for 360 yards and two additional touchdowns and youll see why he is the clear RB1. Thats what you call avoiding a sophomore slump.

So, what does he do in Year 3? Honestly, whatever he wants! The Colts have quality receivers on the outside, good tight end production and the best offensive line in the NFL. With the addition of Matt Ryan, defenses will need to pick their poison. Focusing all your attention on stopping Taylor could produce record days through the air for the Colts. Theres nothing to suggest Taylor is going to fall off anytime soon, especially when hes getting 20 carries and three targets a game.

Derrick Henry, RB, Tennessee Titans

If you want to know why Derrick Henry is a top-tier running back, its this simple: He rushed for almost 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns in eight games last season. Then, after sustaining an injury that would have ended the season of most players in the league, he was able to return in the playoffs. Simply put, hes an alien (or maybe a cyborg). Who needs receptions and receiving yards when you are knocking on the door of 2,000 yards rushing every season? Even if you dont want to say hes the best running back in football, its hard to argue that he hasnt been the most dominant back in the game over the past four years. Why would any fantasy GM doubt his ability to be ready to carry the load once again? The injury gave him the rest he needed after a four-year span culminating in more than 1,000 carries. The reset means many more defenders will be making business decisions before deciding to tackle Henry.

Cooper Kupp, WR, Los Angeles Rams

No other receiver has experienced a season like Kupp did in 2021 and theres a good chance we have seen the best season Kupp has to offer. It is extremely difficult to duplicate 145 receptions, 1,947 yards and 16 touchdowns when many of those numbers are predicated on factors beyond his control. But if youre a fantasy GM, getting your hands on Kupp can still be the difference between winning and losing your league. Why? Targets! In his past three seasons as a starter for the Rams, Kupp has been targeted 449 times. And hes hauled in 331 of those chances. That means he catches 73.7 percent of the balls thrown in his direction. So even when the regression occurs, it will still net him 150-170 targets, which will translate to well over 100 receptions and a fantasy impact that will still be extremely high. All of that production and nobody will tell you Kupp is the most athletic or even the most versatile. What they will tell you is he is surgical in his route running, and when you give him the opportunity, he makes you look like a genius for calling his number.

Justin Jefferson, WR, Minnesota Vikings

Jefferson is part of the influx of ultra-skilled and -athletic receivers who have taken the league by storm. After 88 catches on 125 targets for 1,400 yards and seven touchdowns in his rookie season, he followed it up with 108 catches on 167 targets for 1,616 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2021. Hes tall, he has long arms and he is fast, but he can also operate inside confined spaces. He has so many ways to catch the ball that all a quarterback needs to do is get it within the catch radius and theres a good chance it will be plucked by Jefferson. It also helps him to remain free from the attention of multiple defenders because they have to worry about Adam Thielen on the other side, Irv Smith Jr. at tight end and, of course, Dalvin Cook at running back.

Travis Kelce, TE, Kansas City Chiefs

Kelce was finally usurped as TE1 in 2021 after a three-season reign as the best fantasy tight end in the NFL. Does that mean it is time to punt on him? Absolutely not! Its not like Kelce did not command respect last season. His performance would have made him a top-10 receiver in the league. With Tyreek Hill taking his talents to South Beach, 20 percent of the offenses targets are free to be dished out by the best quarterback in the NFL. Something tells me the Patrick Mahomes-to-Kelce combination will be lighting up scoreboards in 2022. If Kelce was targeted 134 times last season, how many targets will he see now that Hill is no longer there?

Why the US military is listening to shrimp – BBC

Whale skeletons stand guard around the coastline of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, a stark reminder of the damaging effects of military sonar. Sonar from ships and submarines is thought to be one of the contributing factors to whale strandings, confusing the whales' own sonar and casuing them to beach themselves on the shore.

This whale-unfriendly technology, however, may soon have a rival. Lori Adornato, a project manager at US military research agency Darpa, believes we could detect submarines by paying more attention to natural sound than blasting out pulses of sonar.

"At the moment we treat all this natural sound as background noise, or interference, which we try to remove," says Adornato. "Why don't we take advantage of these sounds, see if we can find a signal?"

Her project, Persistent Aquatic Living Sensors (Pals), eavesdrops on marine animals as a way of detecting underwater threats. Current air-dropped sonar buoys deployed by the military to detect enemy underwater activity only work for a few hours over a small area because of limited battery life. The Pals system could instead cover a wide region for months. It could provide a near constant way of monitoring coastlines and underwater channels. Adornato says reef-dwelling species that can be relied on to stay in one place are likely to be the best sentinels.

"You want to make sure your organism always is going to be there," says Adornato.

Pals is sponsoring several teams looking at different approaches using very different reef species.

"It's a loud, low-frequency boom," says Cherubin. "They are territorial and will boom at any intruder on their territory."

A booming grouper can be detected from 800m (2,640ft) away, though not every boom means a contact. As well as specific alert calls for intruders and predators, the grouper repertoire includes courtship sounds to attract mates threatening calls when staking a territory, and other sounds whose purpose remains a mystery.

Dislyte Staff of Immortality: Is It Worth the Grind? – eXputer

Dislyte is a turn-based style battle game. It is an RPG that is set in a modern mythological world. The Lone Star event in Dislyte got released a few days ago. Dislyte released Staff of Immortality in this event as a rare Namecard. While youre at it, why not go through our Donar, Catherine, and Drew esper guides.

Dislyte has well over 60 heroes known as Espers, and our Dislyte Tier List ranks them all. If you are interested in the builds of Espers, then consider reading our Meredith, Nicole, Unas, Triki, and Lin Xiao guides. All of these Espers are divided into four Elements in Dislyte that define their abilities.

If you dont know how to make up a team, we have a guide on how you can prepare the Best Dislyte Team. In which, you can choose any of the Best characters. If you feel like the options are limited, check out the five Best Support Espers guides. You can use Esper Fusion to make your Espers strong.

You might be wondering what exactly is the Staff of Immortality. Youll find that in Dislyte, the Staff of Immortality is a Profile Banner in the game; meaning the Staff of Immortality is the background display of your profile. It is like the Profile Banner that you get by buying the Welcome Pack III. But that one is animated, unlike the Staff of Immortality banner. It is a name card designed for Ollie, the Osiris in the game.

During The Lone Star event in Dislyte, you can get the Staff of Immortality. Youll have to collect 1000 Ancient Coins to buy it by completing different tasks in-game. And to get a total of 1000 Ancient Coins, youll need to play the game regularly and complete the tasks.

Once you have 1000 Ancient Coins, you can head over to the Ancient Coin Shop. There are several different items that you can buy using Ancient Coins. Some items of the Event are,

You can get only 1 Staff of Immortality from the event. And that is all you need. You dont need another Namecard or profile banner as it wont have any use. To get the Staff of Immortality in Dislyte, tap on it, and confirm the payment of 1000 Ancient Coins, and there you have it.

The question arises, is it worth it? Before we answer it, one thing to keep in mind is that it is a limited-time event item. Chances are there wont be any event with Staff of Immortality. So if youre a collector of limited-time event items, then the Staff of Immortality is for you. Well get on that in a while.

Anyways, for all the players, whether youre a collector or a Free-to-Play (F2P) player, you need to consider a few things. First of all, the cost of Staff of Immortality in Dislyte is 1000 Ancient Coins.

Put it this way, you can get 2x Golden Record for 800. Or, you can go for the Lengendary Abilimon, or Legendary Starimon by adding 500 Ancient Coins over the 1000 Ancient Coins.

One thing to keep in mind is that Starimon promotes Espers in Dislyte. It might be a tough choice for players whore starting new to choose Staff of Immortality over Legendary Starimon.

Using Starimon is one of the best methods, but it isnt the only method to Promote Esper Star Rating. If you want to take it slow, check out our Dislyte Best Leveling Guide for Espers.

Although it is a limited-time banner, it has nothing special. It doesnt even have any animations. If it had any, then wed have recommended getting one. Youll be spending time and stamina for this casual Banner. But if youre a collector, then the choice is yours.

If youve decided to get the Staff of Immortality banner in Dislyte, heres how itll look in-game.

The Staff of Immortality is one of the limited-time event items. Thats why it is good to have items if you want to flex on your friends in the future. But to get it, youll either have to use up a lot of gems for the stamina. Or youll have to spend lots of time getting the Ancient Coin.

And if youre a free-to-play player, there are better options for you. Again, this is based on our personal opinion, its totally up to you to decide if the limited-time Namecard Staff of Immortality in Dislyte is worth it or not.

With the Best Team prepared, you can test yourself in the Sonic Miracle or Ritual Miracle. Here, youll get to face different bosses. Talking about bosses, if youre having a hard time beating Siegfried, check out our Best Strategy & Espers to Beat Siegfried in the 12-8 Dislyte guide.

A Dyson Sphere Could Hold they Keys to Immortality – Popular Mechanics

In 1960, British theoretical physicist Freeman Dyson published a one-page paper in the journal Science that offered perhaps the most hopeful vision ever conceived of humanitys technological future. Dyson imagined that an advanced civilization would meet its heightened energy needs by building a sphere around a star to absorb its energy output.

The paper focused more on theory than engineering, and Dyson provided scant details on what such a megastructure might look like or how we might build one. He described his sphere only as a habitable shell encircling a star. But that was enough to captivate and inspire astrophysicists, scientists, and sci-fi writers. In some depictions, the Dyson Sphere, as it became known, appears as a massive ring encircling a star and reaching nearly to Earth. In others, the Sphere completely encases the sun, a hulking megastructure capturing every bit of that stars energy. In addition to scientific works, Dyson Spheres have appeared in novels, movies, and TV showsincluding Star Trekas a home for advanced civilizations.

Dyson himself understood the challenges of constructing such a massive structure, and he was skeptical that it might ever happen. Nonetheless, his Sphere has stirred ambitious ideas about the future of our civilization, and it continues to be offered as a solution to some of humanitys most dire dilemmas. Harnessing the total energy of our sunor any starwould solve our immediate and long-term energy crisis, but when civilization gains access to the complete energy output of a star, meeting our terrestrial energy needs is just the beginning.

With so much energy available, we could direct high-powered laser pulses toward exoplanets that we think may contain life, immeasurably expanding our chances of communicating with distant civilizations. These Dyson-powered beams could travel farther into the universe than anything currently possible, penetrating the higher-density areas of space, such as dust clouds, which decay the signals we send now.

CBS/Getty Images

Alternatively, we could use that power to help reach exoplanets directly by harnessing the energy we need toas some astrophysicists postulatemanipulating the space-time continuum to shorten the trip via experiments in quantum gravity. One intriguing option relies on creating so-called Kugelblitz black holes with pure photons, which have already been theorized to power the interstellar starships of the future. By warping space-time itself, we might be able to travel faster than light or create wormholes that provide shortcuts for crossing the galaxy.

More enticing still, the near-limitless energy made available by Dyson Spheres could solve some of the most perplexing barriers to life extension. Proponents of cryogenics recognize that widespread and longer use could create energy demands that far exceed whats currently available. And in 2018, researchers Alexey Turchin and Maxim Chernyakov posed that artificial intelligence might be able to digitally reconstruct people in a simulated world using DNA and other information from the deceased. Creating simulations rich enough to satisfy a race of near immortals would require huge amounts of energynot to mention clearing the many ethical and philosophical hurdlesbut the researchers proposed that Dyson technology could deliver the needed power.

Dysons ambitious vision seems more relevant than ever today. If technology continues along its current growth curve, global energy demands could increase by 50 percent in the next 30 years, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Wind, solar, and other renewable energy sources will help in the near term, but a long-term solution will require more daring engineering. Dysons Sphere could be a bold solution, but it comes with obvious physical and mechanical problems, and its not clear whether these could be solved even by a civilization many thousands of years more advanced than ours.

As a professor at the Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Technical University Berlin, Ive devoted decades to understanding the possibilities related to advanced alien civilizations. Ive coauthored five books on extraterrestrial life, and my interest in this science inspired me to study Dyson Spheres as a possible form of advanced alien technology. Around a decade ago, I became intrigued by the kinds of large engineering projects an alien civilization might undertake.

Getty Images

In 2010, I looked at the feasibility of building a Dyson Sphere. Working with Brooks Harrop, a former physics student of mine at Washington State University in Pullman, we found numerous problems with the common conception of a Dyson Sphere, the most important of which was the spheres risk of collapse. A rigid concentric sphere around a star would experience a gravitational pull on every point. No material known today could resist that force. Engineers might counter this with a complex thruster system that keeps the shell in place via a counteracting force, but given the enormous mass of the shellmost conceptions imagine the structure to have a radius of 93 million miles, the distance between Earth and the sunsuch a system would consume a huge fraction, if not all, of the energy collected by the shell in the first place.

But say we could overcome these problems and manage to build the sphere far into the future: How would it survive meteors, asteroids, or radiation and solar flares? An object with the mass of Halleys comet would crash into the structure with a kinetic energy of more than 1 million hydrogen Tsar bombs, the most powerful nuclear device ever detonated.

Dyson foresaw those risks and acknowledged that a shell or ring surrounding a star would not likely be feasible. But the physicist proposed a solution: A loose collection, or swarm, of objects traveling on independent orbits around a star, harvesting its energy while avoiding most of the physical and mechanical problems of a solid Dyson Sphere. The satellites could be built over time and delivered gradually to the network, increasing the swarms energy production over time.

A Dyson Swarm of about 10 million satellites could fulfill humanitys energy needs. Thats a lot, but modern satellite constellations are creating precedence for such an engineering feat. SpaceX can launch 240 Starlink communication satellites a month, and as of February 2022, it already has more than 2,000 in space. The fleet could number in the tens of thousands by its completionnot Dyson Swarm amounts by a long shot, but enough to fuel our imagination.

To overcome the challenges of Dysons original concept, Harrop and I set out to find a realistic design for its replacement, the Dyson Swarm. We called our idea Solar Wind Power Satellites (SWPS). While traditional solar panels use the energy of visible light, our satellites would harvest the electrons that make up half of the solar wind. (The other half consists of protons and alpha particles.) Fast solar wind has a velocity of ~750km/s-1making these electrons richer in energy than those in the visible light hitting a solar panel. The heart of our SWP satellite is a long metal wire pointed at the sun, which would be charged to produce a magnetic field and then direct incoming electrons into a spherical metal receiver. These electrons would produce a current, which would in turn maintain the magnetic field in the wire and create a self-sustaining system between the two.

Most of the current would remain to power an infrared laser beamed toward receiving stations on Earthinfrared is optimal due to the transparent infrared window in our atmosphere, which allows wavelengths between roughly 8 and 13 microns through without absorption. After the laser sends its electrical energy to the receiving station, the remaining electrons would fall back onto a ring-shaped sail, where incoming sunlight can excite them enough to keep the satellite in orbit around the star.

Eugene Richards/Getty Images

Each SWP satellite would have a mass of about 3.7 metric tons (about three times the weight of a GPS satellite) and would provide a continuous power output of about 2 megawatts per 24-hour day, meeting roughly the energy needs of 1,000 U.S. single-family homes. A full swarm of SWP satellites could fulfill all of humanitys energy needs.

These satellites could be built with relatively simple, inexpensive materials; the major construction expense would be 950 feet of copper wire per satellite. And because they use solar wind as their energy source, these satellites would absorb a minimal amount of heat and operate at nearly 100 percent efficiency. Traditional solar cells, by contrast, are expensive to produce because they require high-purity silicon for their semiconductors, and they have a notoriously low efficiency, about 20 percent.

A few technical hurdles stand in the way of a Dyson Swarm. While SWP satellites require little maintenance, theyre not self-cleaning. If positive ions rather than electrons from the solar wind get caught in the sail, they would reduce the efficiency of the satellite and, over time, degrade the system. We also didnt solve how to maintain a steady location in space amid variations in the solar wind, or how to arrange the orbits of millions (or eventually billions) of satellites around a star. And while small-scale, power-beaming laser systems have made large strides in recent years, a system that works in space is still a challenge. Small temperature changes of less than a degree Celsius would result in large changes to the lasers wavelength and output efficiency. Keeping a constant temperature in space is a headacheits difficult to transport heat from hotter to colder bodies where there is no atmosphere. We havent solved every problem of the Dyson Swarm yet, but maybe another civilization has.

In my book The Cosmic Zoo: Complex Life on Many Worlds, coauthored with William Bains, a senior research fellow at Cardiff University, we argued that once life arises on a planetary body, it will eventually evolve to become intelligentassuming the planet stays habitable long enough. The basis of this argument is that all major transitions in the evolution of life on Earth seem to have occurred several times independently from each other, or via different biochemical pathways. That would suggest that some of the trillions of other planets in the universe could have experienced this same evolutionary process, and a subset of life forms on those planets could have evolved to become intelligent. Have they advanced enough to build a Dyson Sphere? Freeman Dyson hypothesized that if they did, we could detect it.

Traditional Dyson Spheres with a solid shell might emit waste energy in mid-infrared wavelengths, detectable by current human instruments. At least one research team has looked for such a signature. Jason Wright, a professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Penn State, and Matt Povich of California State Polytechnic Universitys Physics and Astronomy department, used data from NASAs Wide Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) to search for a strong infrared signal in space, which would be expected from a Dyson Sphere. That search failed to find a Sphere, but perhaps the reason our telescopes havent seen any megastructures in space is that the aliens have come to the same conclusion we did in our paper: A gigantic, solid Dyson sphere is impractical, even for a civilization more advanced than our own.

Though we might never see our sun encased in a megastructure, or draw our energy from millions of satellites orbiting around it, the scienceand science fictioninspired by Dysons Sphere continues to animate some of our most ambitious thinking about life on this planet and beyond. That might be its most valuable contributiongiving us an ambitious target to aim for, and making way for a revolutionary discovery in the attempt.

I WooHooed an alpha wolf and then betrayed him in The Sims 4 Werewolves – PC Gamer

No Twilight dunks. No Teen Wolf gags. No tired references to any supernatural teen fiction of my bygone youth. Those are the promises I made to myself when I agreed to write about the new Sims 4 Werewolves game pack. And yet I accidentally wound up mating with an alpha werewolf, joining up with the rivals to his pack, and making plans to bite his new toddler.

The fanfic is writing itself and I am powerless to stop it.

My Sims 4 Werewolves session started appropriately. I created a young adult werewolf with an undercut, nose rings, the cute new patchwork baggy jeans in the Werewolves game pack, and allowed the randomizer to bestow her the name Margaret Ruff. Folks who have the Pets expansion will recognize the many fur color, pattern, and painting options available to make a rather unique werewolf with the same tools. I still think they look a bit like Jim Carey in a Grinch costume, but they did grow on me.

I expected (wrongly) that I would need to inject a bit of my own drama into werewolf life, so I made Margaret a vegetarian, a kleptomaniac, and set her up with a job as a night shift babysitter. Everything turned tails up very fast. Moonwood Mill's one affordable starter home is actually pretty cute as default homes go, showing off a bit of rustic cabin flare. I originally thought it odd that it came with neither TV nor computer, until I found out how prone werewolves are, even in human form, to wrecking their appliances at random with accidental superhuman strength. Margaret could barely browse the fridge for a snack without breaking it.

I quickly set aside concerns for Margaret's property because I couldn't be bothered with placing her on an eternal sink, stove, and fridge repair routine. Instead, she wandered Moonwood Mill. Frankly, I recommend spending as little time as possible at your own home because Moonwood is stacked with common spaces and community lots. I've always felt "eh" about Live Mode, but these areas actually felt worth spending time in.

There's a library and gym combo in an old warehouse, effectively a community center, where Margaret researched the secrets of werewolf lore. There's a bar with a secret clubhouse bunker beneath it where she snatched many a wolf nap. There are sewer grates full of secrets that she partially explored.

Most important are the Moonwood Collective pack's treehouse and the Wildfang trailer, popular hangout spots for their respective members. Margaret needed to get into one of these packs for a little stability: She couldn't stop breaking her sink and had just three simoleons to her name. Getting sent home from her only joba twice-weekly babysitting gigfor transforming into werewolf form in a rage certainly hadn't helped.

The Moonwood treehouse is where Margaret got to know Kristopher Volkov, chill alpha male of the Moonwood pack. He seemed like a decent guy, immediately choosing to help calm Maraget's rising werewolf fury when she showed up. Every werewolf has a fury meter that fills over time, especially under a full moon (every eight days by default), and when it finally maxes out they'll lose control, transform into a wolf, and go on a rampage around town scaring other Sims or smashing up their own homes.

Kristopher quelled her rage meter and delivered a bit of explanation: the Moonwood Collective wolves are all about mastering their rage and living in harmony with humans, unlike their rivals the Wildfangs who take pride in their wolf strength and see the Collective's attitude as cowardly. Margaret, vegetarian evangelist, babysitter, and lover of a good cable-knit, seemed like a perfect fit for the chill Collective.

The fanfic is writing itself and I am powerless to stop it.

Kristopher thought so too, because he started inviting himself over to her house. Often. Kristopher was so intent on spending time with Margaret, unbothered by her perpetually leaking sink, that I decided, what the hell, let her flirt with him. That one decision launched a drama worthy of a young adult paperback and now I have no idea how to stop it.

As soon as Margaret flirted with Kristopher I was notified that she'd found her fated mate, the one werewolf she's meant to be with. I tested the boundaries quickly, finding that she got tense flirting with anyone who isn't her fatemate. I scoffed. Of course my young adult Sim werewolf was destined to be with the grey-in-his-beard alpha, who was an unknown number of years older than her. Immortality is a high level werewolf skill in the tree, after all.

Though I mock my accidental YA novel setup, I rolled with it. Margaret and Kristopher had a whirlwind courtship the likes of which many Sims have experienced: flirting on the couch until 2am, a first kiss under a waning moon outside the library, and WooHooing in a bush across town.

But Margaret was still a growing wolf. She quickly went from a pup, to runt, to prime wolf. I used her ability points to unlock skills for treasure scavenging, enhanced smell, and night vision, while she gained passive abilities like control over when she entered her wolf form. At each new wolf rank she also gained a trait that I didn't pick. She started out excitable, gaining more fury while in a playful mood, which was fine.

Then she became prideful of her wolf abilities and also developed "wolf brain" making intellectual pursuits more difficult. Uh oh.

Much as I personally appreciated Kristopher's werewolf philosophy, I knew Margaret was meant to be a Wildfang. She made quick friends with the Wildfang alphaconveniently Kristopher's estranged adopted daughterand joined the crew. She got a weekly jerky allotment, a werewolf magazine subscription, and the expectation that she'd start spreading her werewolf prowess all over the world.

It didn't come between her and Kristopher at first, though I was fully intending for her to tell him Wildfangs rule pretty soon, and surely that was not going to go over well. Not two days later, Kristopher called to tell Margaret that he'd adopted a toddler, a little girl named Perry who almost immediately developed a grudge against her. Is Kristopher planning to turn her wolf when she's old enough? Or should I go behind his back and have Margaret do it herself? This furry family tree got pretzel-shaped in a hurry.

Sims 4 Werewolves may be billed as a Game Pack, not expansion, but the new neighborhood, skill tree, super customizable werewolf form, and the built-in drama of wolf life add way more than I expected to the game. I normally turn my nose up at Live Mode and go back to building my little houses, but I need to find out just how unhinged the next chapter of the Margaret Ruff series gets.

Are Any MCU Gods Safe from Gorr the God Butcher in Thor: Love and Thunder? – Den of Geek

Asgardians

The Asgardians were arguably the first deities to be introduced to audiences in the MCU, debuting in Thor. Despite the suggestion that they are simply beings from another realm, those who hail from Asgard arent humble enough to shy away from the term god. Humanity has worshipped them as Norse legends, with each figure signifying a different aspect of their world. A god of thunder, a trickster, and the All-Father are just a few examples of ancient myths making their way into Marvel continuity.

Marvel has taken some creative license when it comes to the representation of these Asgardians. Although familiar fables are intertwined with their own storytelling, the comics and indeed the big screen have fashioned Thor into more of a superhero than a god. Theyve even added a range of original characters like the Warriors Three, to help round out their iteration of Asgard. Regardless, they are essentially immortal, genuinely powerful, worshipped by numerous species, and carry a protective role over the Nine Realms. Midgard might now play host to New Asgard, but its people are still as godly as they once were.

The Olympians are yet to make their impressive, if not slightly cheesy, debut in the MCU. Thor: Love and Thunder will mark the introduction of these Greek legends, a pantheon thats also extended to ancient Roman civilization as well. Zeus, Aphrodite, Hermes, Apollo, Hecate, Hades the list just goes on. All of these deities have played some significant or minor role in the comics, and are likely to be added to the MCU roster.

Mount Olympus is their traditional home and they may well have a similar treatment to the Asgardians, getting presented initially as an alien species. Ancient myth paints the Olympians as far from perfect, with their petty squabbles and extreme egos sometimes affecting Earth for the worst. But their spectacular gifts and status across human history are enough to grant them god status. Their appearance in the trailer for the upcoming Thor film does suggest that most of them will meet a grizzly fate at the hands of Gorr the God Butcher.

For those wondering, Hercules, or Heracles in the Greek form, might have begun life as a demi-god, but he does ascend to become the god of heroes; a role that the MCU might present to continue the warriors adventures.

Moon Knight has added yet another pantheon to the MCU, loosely known as the Ennead. In actuality, theyre the gods of ancient Egypt, fashioned from animal-based imagery and tasked with overseeing the development of human civilization. There are far fewer Egyptian deities than Asgardians or Olympians, but their power and status on-screen are perhaps far greater. They are presented as gods in the truest form, with Khonshu, Taweret, and Ammit becoming the standouts of the group.

Andrew Wiggins shines amid Steph Curry struggles as Golden State Warriors move to one win from NBA immortality – The Mirror

The Golden State Warriors are one win away from a seventh NBA championship in franchise history after they defeated the Boston Celtics in Game 5 of the NBA Finals to take a 3-2 series lead

Image: USA TODAY Sports)

The Golden State Warriors are just one win away from continuing their dynasty and securing a fourth NBA championship in eight years after Andrew Wiggins inspired them to a 104-94 home win in Game 5 against the Boston Celtics on Monday night.

In a crucial NBA Finals contest, Wiggins duly delivered the biggest performance of his eight-year career as he dropped 26 points and collected 13 rebounds. He and teammate Klay Thompson did most of the damage, with Thompson - who returned from back-to-back Achilles and ACL injuries earlier this season - contributing 21 points to give the Warriors a 3-2 series lead.

After producing a masterful 43-point game to level the finals at two games apiece, Steph Currys NBA-record streak of 132 successive postseason games with at least one three-pointer made ended, along with his NBA-best run of 233 consecutive matches with a three when accounting for regular season games too. The 34-year-old shot 0-9 from beyond the arc, but the Warriors overcame his poor shooting as the Celtics committed 18 total turnovers and missed 10 free throws at the Chase Center in San Francisco.

Curry finished with 16 points and eight assists, but Wiggins was undoubtedly the star man for the Warriors in Game 5 as the Canadian produced a terrific all-round display that highlighted his prowess in scoring, defending, and rebounding. Wiggins performance came 36 years after his father Mitchell came off the bench to lead the Houston Rockets to the win against the Celtics in Game 5 of the 1986 NBA Finals - but the Rockets went on to lose the series.

Wiggins - dubbed Maple Jordan as a highly-rated youngster - had zero turnovers and clearly has no intention to let the Warriors suffer the same fate as his father's Rockets. He capped his sensational night with an assertive one-handed slam dunk late in the fourth quarter.

Ultimately though, other Warriors outside of Wiggins stood up amid Currys struggles as he failed to make a three in an NBA game for the first time since November 8 2018. Warriors head coach Steve Kerr admitted the two-time MVP was probably due a game like this as Curry has starred in these NBA Finals and is the frontrunner to take home the Finals MVP award.

Draymond Green brought the energy, making an early play where he collided with an audience member - and an enormous cheer ripped through the arena when he checked if the woman involved was OK. The crowd then exploded into raptures when Green sold a fake to the entire Celtics defence, allowing the former Defensive Player of the Year to easily get to the basket.

Image:

Thompson also hit some mega three-pointers, including a quick-fire double in the middle of a dominant Boston run in the third quarter after the Warriors had thrown away a 16-point lead. The 32-year-old went 5-of-11 from deep in the win.

As for the Celtics, it was a tough night. For so long, Jayson Tatum looked like he was set to unleash his best performance of the series for a spell in the third quarter but his wildly inconsistent play ensured he unravelled with poor decisions and erroneous shooting from the free throw line.

The 24-year-old twice missed his opportunity to score after fouls, and Boston finished a poor 21-of-31 from the line. Tatum scored a game-high 27 points to go with 10 rebounds, but he could only give the Celtics - who led these NBA Finals 2-1 - their first made three in the closing moments of the second quarter as the road team struggled to put the ball in the basket from deep.

Marcus Smart overcame a sluggish start to finish with 20 points, while Jaylen Brown put up 18 points after originally going 2-of-11 to start the game. Brown even finished without a three-pointer, as he missed each of his five attempts.

The Warriors have made exceptional third quarter performances their USP this season, but the Celtics used the period to conjure up their best basketball of the evening. Boston trailed Golden State 51-39 at the break before storming back with 35-point burst in the third.

Al Horford hit a huge go-ahead three-pointer with 6:28 left in the quarter that made it 58-55 as the Celtics appeared to finally find their shooting rhythm from deep. Grant Williams three with approximately four minutes remaining was Bostons eighth straight three after missing their first 12 attempts.

The erratic nature of the game was embodied by the Celtics deep shooting, with Tatum and Smart coming to the fore while Brown faded in and out of the game. On the other hand, the Warriors overcame an awful shooting display in the first half (17% from three) to play with more composure in the second half - and it paid dividends.

The key moment came in the third quarter when Thompson connected on a three after the Warriors had missed 14 straight efforts, and it allowed the five-time All-Star to find his rhythm for the remainder of the contest. Jordan Poole - who finished with 14 points - struck with a 33ft three to beat the third-quarter buzzer, giving the Warriors a slender 75-74 lead heading into the fourth.

Image:

Do you think the Golden State Warriors will win the NBA Finals over the Boston Celtics? Let us know in the comments section.

With momentum back on their side, the Warriors cemented the massive win as Wiggins, the first overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, powered home a dunk with 2:10 remaining. The 2022 NBA Finals have proved to be a series defined by hard and physical defence, and Wiggins excelled as he unsettled Tatum throughout.

Throughout this campaign, the Warriors have insisted their current roster is different from the iconic side that clinched three titles and reached five NBA Finals between 2015 and 2019. It appears they are more similar than even the staff and players realise, as the Warriors continue to collect high-profile wins one way or another.

One more win in Boston on Thursday night and the Warriors will seal another championship, ensuring they will have that in common with their Kevin Durant-led predecessors. One more win to elongate the dynasty and secure NBA immortality.

Is There A Real Difference Between White And Yellow Peaches? – Tasting Table

In many parts of the United States, there's a much anticipated time of year: the peach season. However, any peach lover knows that not all peaches are created equal. If you're not familiar with the different varieties, take a few minutes to better understand them and their uses. Widely grown in the United States, yellow peaches have a fuzzy, pinkish-orange outside and bright yellow flesh. Compared to white peaches, they have a strong, sometimes slightly acidic flavor. Cook's Illustrated reports that their hardy flesh and strong flavor make them ideal for baking.

While white peaches look similar on the outside, the flesh is soft and white. According to Specialty Produce, the fruit originated in China, with a long history of cultural significance. In Chinese mythology, peaches represent health and longevity as they grow on the tree of life and are eaten by the gods to retain immortality. It's easy to see why. Chock-full of vitamin C with a sweet, delicate flavor and a scent that is sometimes described as floral, the white peach is a healthy food with a heavenly taste.

While 80% of peaches grown in China are white, they're less popular in the West partially because they bruise easily and are harder to transport. In addition, while yellow peaches taste great in pies, cobblers, and even grilled, white peaches are too soft and easily turn to mush. However, they're great for eating raw; you can also use overripe peaches for sweet, refreshing ice creams and smoothies.

While the worst thing that can happen if you decide to bake with white peaches is a mushy cobbler, PennState Extension states that canning them can be downright dangerous. With a pH of above 4.6, white peaches are considered low-acid fruits. That's what causes the sweet, delicate flavor that makes them so delicious. However, it also means that the bacteria which cause harmful and sometimes deadly infections like botulism, aren't destroyed in the canning process. So while yellow peaches can be canned with a water bath or pressure canner, PennState Extension warns that you should avoid canning white peaches altogether.

However, you still have options if you want to preserve white peaches for colder months: PennState Extension suggests freezing them as an alternate preservation method. The Spruce Eats reports that you can also experiment with dehydrating peaches but keep in mind that dried fruit has been linked to salmonella outbreaks.

Newly Announced Marvel Show to Focus on Scarlet Witch’s Long Lost Love – Inside the Magic

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) director Destin Daniel Crettons secret Marvel Studios original series has been revealed to focus on Simon Williams/Wonder Man. He is working with Andrew Guest, a writer-producer on Brooklyn Nine-Nineand Community, to introduce one of Marvel Comics oldest characters yet to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Simon Williams/Wonder Man first appeared in Marvel ComicAvengers #9 (1964) by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. As a young man, he inherited his fathers company, but thanks to Tony Stark/Iron Mans Stark Industries the company was losing money. So his brother tricked him into embezzling money and joined Baron Zemos Masters of Evil.

Simon Williams got his powers after Baron Zemo experimented on him. His powers include an ionic form the tissue and bones of his entire body were strengthed by Pym Particle charged iota in the ionic ray bombardment procedure. This gives him super strength, super senses, enhanced stamina, flight, and immortality.

His brother Eric Williams was the villain Grim Reaper. He tried to kill Earths Mightiest Heroes after Simon died and his brainwaves were used to create the Vision. Simon William would work as an Avenger and the West Coast Avengers for a while but left to try his hand at becoming an actor. He was disillusioned with the failures of the Avengers and turned down Steve Rogers/Captain America when he invited him to rejoin. He eventually formed the Revengers.

Simon was in love with Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. Because his brainwaves were the basis of the Vision the three of them have had one of the strangest love triangles in Marvel Comics. Clint Barton/Hawkeye was another of Wandas love interests during this time.

The MCU has teased Wonder Man for a while. Nathan Fillion (Firefly) has campaigned to play Simon Williams for years. He filmed scenes for James Gunns Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2(2017), but he was ultimately cut from the film. He did get to voice Wonder Man in the now-canceled M.O.D.O.K. series on Hulu, which starred Patton Oswalt.

It was also rumored Wonder Man could show up inWandaVisionwhen leaks revealed concept art for him. However, he never appeared in the MCUs first original series for Disney+. WandaVisionsspinoffAgatha: House of Harkness is also in production.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Simon Williams/ Wonder Man is headed to Marvel Cinematic Universe. It seems to dash Nathan Fillions dreams of playing Wonder Man in live-action as other outlets have thrown out names like Evan Peters as being in contention.

6 Things We Learned from Honorary Lesbian Drake’s New Album – INTO

Move over Hot Girl Summer: 2022 is shaping up to give us Unexpected Album Summer after famed honorary lesbian Drakeone single day after the life-saving announcement of a new Beyonc album and a surprise single from FKA Twigsgifted us with a surprise album last night. Honestly, Nevermind is a instant classic in the Drake genre, even if its missing some of the bombast of last years Certified Lover Boy in which he famously outed himself as a he/they lesbian.

In classic Drake fashion, the album gives us a look into the romantic fears and vulnerabilities of one of the worlds most iconic lovers of womenwhile flawlessly upholding his doomed romantic persona. Its mellow, hilarious, and sexy all at once: another classic Drake combination. Here are a few of the most important truths we uncovered while listening:

This one seems obvious, but theres some deep wisdom buried in here. You cant buy love, and you also cant buy ambition. But you can be an honorary lesbian if you try hard enough.

2. He Doesnt Go to the Met Because They Only Provide a Plus One (Sticky)

A longtime mystery solved at last! Who would Drake bring to the Met if they did give him more than a plus one? And more importantly: what would he wear? The mind boggles.

3. His Mother Wanted Him to Go Corporate (Sticky)

Okay but why work for a corporation when you can BE a corporation, Sandi?

4. He Speaks Beautiful French (Sticky)

Not exactly a surprise because, you know, Canada, but very hot. Imagine Drake calling you cherie. Tell me thats not lesbian culture. Also the fact that the song is called Sticky, I rest my case.

5. His Funeral is Going to Be Lit (Massive)

Thats how he treated people! This is definitely something we already knew, since I personally cant imagine Drakes funeral being anything less than a stadium-filling event with lots of fireworks and possibly a 50-foot Drake hologram. But I dont want to spend too much time on this thought because the idea of a world without Drake is too sad for me to contemplate. More life, naythe most possible life for Drake! Immortality for our favorite honorary lesbian.

6. He Loves the Way They Hang (Jimmy Cooks)

F*ck the silicone! Honestly, this is the energy that makes Drake a beloved honorary lesbian to begin with. He likes you just the way you are, babe, and never forget it. That said, lets not forget that Drake is very surgery-positive. Hes a fan of an enhanced butt (who isnt?) so dont ever fall into the trap of thinking that Drake is trying to surgery-shame anyone. Hes just saying that hes a fan of those big naturals. What dyke isnt?

Shane Lowry shows off Boston Celtics attire ahead of the first round of the US Open – Irish Mirror

Shane Lowry took to Twitter to show off his threads ahead of the first round of the US Open - and Boston Celtics fans will be impressed by the Clara man's choice.

Posting a tweet to his official Twitter page, the photo displayed a crisp white polo shirt with a large Boston Celtics logo emblazoned on the back.

It is a savvy move from the Co. Offaly golfer given that this weekend's US Open will take place at The Country Club at Brookline, a course not too far outside of Boston, Massachussets.

The Celtics' official logo since the 1960's has been a depiction of a leprechaun spinning a basketball, but shamrocks also hold a close association with the NBA team.

The emblem adorning Lowry's shirt is the Celtics' secondary logo, which is used at present on player and fan apparel.

Captioning the post, Lowry said: "All set for tomorrow."

Alongside the US Open, there are other major sporting matters to be settled in the States this week, and the NBA Finals - involving the Celtics - continue on Thursday night.

The Celtics face a win-or-go-home game against the Golden State Warriors who, with their 3-2 series lead, are looking for just one more win which would secure them a fourth title in eight years.

There is encouragement for Boston, however, in that they have won three games when facing eliminiation in this year's playoffs.

They will be looking to win and force a first Finals Game 7 since 2016.

That would take place on Sunday evening, by which time Lowry's own fate will have been sealed.

UFC 275 Began a Changing of the Guard – MMA Sucka

UFC 275 gave us so many electrifying moments that we cherished as fans of mixed martial arts. The main event between Glover Teixeira and Jiri Prochazka becoming an all-time classic, the unexpectedly tough challenge for Valentina Shevchenko from Taila Santos, the highlight reel spinning back fist finish by Weili Zhang, and the emotional announcement of the long-reigning former strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk after her loss to Zhang.

Jedrzejczyks retirement from MMA competition will affect the UFC landscape. Even though she wasnt as active towards the end of her career, all of her fights were extremely impactful for womens MMA. Not only did she always fight high-ranking opponents such as Michelle Waterson and Tecia Torres, she was part of many classic fights in her unsuccessful journey to recapture her title against Rose Namajunas and Weili Zhang. Lets not forget that she was going for UFC immortality by moving up a weight class and fighting for the vacant 125-pound title against Valentina Shevchenko. No matter who her opponent was or where she was fighting, Jedrzejczyk always had many fans around the world watching her when she stepped into the Octagon. The absence of this important figure for womens MMA will definitely leave a void for MMA, but her retirement may be part of something bigger.

We might be witnessing the passing of the torch for many fighters who are part of the key groups that propelled UFC into the mainstream around 2015. Many of those fans grew up watching Joanna reigning over the 115-pound weight class during that time and now retiring in 2022. Also retired in 2022, just the past couple of months ago, are former strawweight contender and title challenger Claudia Gadelha and UFC veteran Felice Herrig.

In addition, fans and media are constantly talking about the future plans of Tony Ferguson and Frankie Edgar, a pair of fighters who were pivotal figures for their respective weight classes and were at the pinnacle of their careers around the same time as Jedrzejczyk. Fans are also persistently questioning how many more fights Conor McGregor has in him, a figure who started the UFCs entrance into mainstream culture.

All sports have eras that are defined by the athletes who are in each respective period, so seeing a changing of the guard like this is only natural. However, since MMA is so new, many fans are experiencing this type of shift for the first time. Witnessing this journey of old faces appearing less and less and new fighters gaining prominence and being inspired by those legends in the past will be very interesting as a fan of this sport.

Missed Out: Ruminating on the Milwaukee Bucks-less NBA Finals – Brew Hoops

The Milwaukee Bucks are no longer reigning NBA champions.

After dispatching the Boston Celtics in six games, the Golden State Warriors have reclaimed the NBA title, their fourth time seizing the crown in eight seasons. Steph Curry didnt need it, but he earned his first ever Finals MVP award, adding yet another accolade to the greatest-shooter-of-all-times collection. The Dubs dynasty appears to be alive and well, and a fair portion of Bucks fans are viewing the achievement with a mix of admiration, jealousy, a bit of pride due to the Milwaukee connection, and the slightest hint of schadenfreude.

First things first: most, if not all Bucks fans, are perfectly pleased that the title went to a team thats NOT the Celtics. Milwaukee and Boston have butted basketball heads before, but this last series brewed a fair amount of bad blood between the two fanbases. In particular, the antics of Marcus Smart, Grant Williams, and head coach Ime Udoka rubbed most of us the wrong way, so seeing them fall short of basketball immortality feels...right. Of course, given that the Bucks are only one season removed from their title and the Celtics just made the Finals, this rivalry should remain in good health in 2023 and beyond. Boston and Milwaukee might not be the only teams in the Eastern Conference next year, but it feels like theyre the only two teams that will matter.

All that said, its difficult to shake the shoulda, coulda, woulda that comes with Milwaukee having been knocked out in the second round, despite being favored by many to return to the championship. Were it not for their All Star forward getting injured in the previous series, Milwaukee would have been at full strength, they could have met the Miami Heat in the conference finals, and they would have returned to the Finals and overwhelmed Golden State with their size. But the game isnt won by hypotheticals, so sooner or later Bucks fans will have to cope with the disappointing ending to yet another promising year within Giannis Antetokounmpos prime. The good news is, so far, that Khris Middleton should be ready to go next season...and the additional time off means some well-deserved rest for the rest of the Bucks roster.

Theres always next year. Thats what weve been saying since last month, what the Celtics have been saying since last night, and what all 29 teams tell themselves when they fall short. Its the necessary coping mechanism of fanbases everywhere. In the case of the Milwaukee Bucks, though, I have a feeling that its more than just talk.

Stay tuned.

$2.38M to test nano-engineered brain cancer treatment in mice – University of Michigan News

A new nanomedicine that crosses the blood-brain barrier, engages the immune system and kills cancer cells may offer hope for treating the most aggressive form of brain cancer, glioblastoma.

With $2.38 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health, the medicine will soon be tested in mice at the University of Michigan.

Led by a nano-engineer and neuro-oncology researchers at U-M, the study is the first to test the two drugs together, packaged so that they can be delivered through the bloodstream rather than a hole in the skull. It builds on previous success eliminating cancer in seven out of eight mice by packaging just the immune drug in the protein that crosses the blood-brain barrier so that it could be delivered intravenously. The five-year survival rate for glioblastoma in humans is about 5%.

The standard of care for glioblastoma is surgery and radiation, and the median survival hasnt improved for several decades. A systemically delivered nanomedicine that can prolong survival and prevent recurrence is the dream, said Maria Castro, the R.C. Schneider Collegiate Professor of Neurosurgery and professor of cell and developmental biology.

Her team leads the mouse studies in collaboration with Pedro Lowenstein, the Richard C. Schneider Collegiate Professor of Neurosurgery and professor of cell and developmental biology.

As the team tests out the nanoparticles timed to release the immune drug followed by a tumor-killing drug, developed and produced by project lead Joerg Lahanns group, one of the key questions is how well the drugs cooperate.

Are they working much better than either drug alone? Thats what were hoping for. Or is it just a small improvementor are they actually competing with each other and making the treatment worse or increasing the side effects? said Lahann, the Wolfgang Pauli Collegiate Professor of Engineering and director of the U-M Biointerfaces Institute.

The advanced nanomedicines are delivered intravenously and combined with radiation therapy, as they would be in a future clinical trial.

To get the nanomedicine from the bloodstream to the brain, Lahanns team packages the drugs in a protein called human serum albumin, which is present in blood and can cross the blood-brain barrier. Once there, the drugs must wake up the immune system to prevent recurrence and death, which frequently follow conventional treatments like surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

Tumors grow and regrow because cancer cells have ways of suppressing the immune system. The 2020 study and the new grant use a drug that blocks STAT3, a signaling molecule that cancer cells use to tell immune cells not to attack them. This gave the immune system of the mice the ability to identify the cancer cells as targets for destruction.

In a study just out in May, the team used a drug that blocks CXCR4, an immune receptor that receives orders to send killer T-cells away. Blocking CXCR4 helps keep T-cells in the brain, where they do their work of killing brain cancer cells. Three out of five mice survived long term, and all of those survivors cleared new tumors during the recurrence challenge.

While the new grant wont use this drug, the team is interested in a future study exploring whether two immune approaches together might be more effective.

Tumors have a lot of variation, so we need to attack them from many directions, Lowenstein said.

After initial testing of the new two-compartment nanomedicine in lab-grown cell cultures that mimic human tumors and their surroundings, the team will begin testing in mice as the next step toward clinical trials in humans. They will find out how much of the nanomedicine makes it into the brain, how well it fights the cancer, how well it leaves the body and what the side effects are like.

Previous studies suggest that the nanoparticles home in on tumor cells, infiltrating them more often than healthy cells, and one of the goals for this one is to better understand how that works. For nanomedicines to advance into clinical trials as experimental treatments for glioblastoma, we must understand the mechanisms by which they accumulate in tumor and other tissues, said Colin Greineder, U-M assistant professor of emergency medicine, who will lead studies of how the nanomedicine distributes in the body.
