Guengerich, Hamm named to inaugural class of ASBMB Fellows – Vanderbilt University News

Lorena Infante Lara

Fred Guengerich, who holds the Tadashi Inagami, Ph.D. Chair in Biochemistry and is a professor of biochemistry, and Heidi Hamm, who holds the Aileen M. Lange and Annie Mary Lyle Chair in Cardiovascular Research and is a professor of pharmacology, have been named part of the inaugural class of fellows of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

The newly established honor recognizes the most distinguished members of the professional society.

The ASBMB is the premier scientific society for biochemistry and molecular biology, so recognition as inaugural fellows is a tremendous honor, said Lawrence J. Marnett, Mary Geddes Stahlman Professor of Cancer Research and dean of basic sciences. Both Heidi and Fred are highly accomplished scientists who have done a great deal for the society throughout their careers. Its hard to imagine two more deserving individuals.

Fellows will receive a crystal award and a pin, and will be recognized with their own profiles on the ASBMB website and at the annual ASBMB meeting, held this year between April 27 and April 30.

Guengerich was nominated by Marnett himself. Dr. Guengerichs extraordinary accomplishments in scientific research are matched only by his devotion to the ASBMB. Guengerich has been an active member of the society since 1978.

For Guengerich, the path was always clear. Ever since I was a sophomore in college, he said, the only career I wanted was to be a biochemist. A native of Pekin, Illinois, Guengerich completed a Ph.D. in biochemistry at Vanderbilt University and returned, after a brief postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Michigan Medical School, to join the faculty of the Department of Biochemistry.

Guengerichs research aims to understand the role of cytochromes P450, or CYPs, as central players in both metabolic and biosynthetic pathways and in drug metabolism related to health and disease. CYP enzymes help detoxicateor remove the harmful effects ofchemical carcinogens and toxicants, and have central roles in hormone synthesis and breakdown. Throughout his academic career, Guengerich has published over 1,000 papers, reviews, and book chapters that have collectively been cited over 100,000 times.

Aside from research excellence, Guengerich is committed to the training of newer generations of biochemists. This commitment to mentoring was rewarded in 2019 with the receipt of the Richard Armstrong Mentoring Award. Among his numerous national and international awards are the William C. Rose Award from the ASBMB, an honorary doctorate from the Universit de Paris, an appointment as one of the inaugural American Chemical Society fellows, an appointment as an American Association for the Advancement of Science fellow, and the receipt of the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Chemistry in Cancer Research from the American Association for Cancer Research.

Following years of service on the editorial board of the Journal of Biological Chemistry, published by ASBMB, he became an associate editor in 2006 and a deputy editor in 2013, a role in which he continues to serve. He also served as interim editor-in-chief in 20152016.

Working with the ASBMB and the Journal of Biological Chemistry has been a great experience for me, Guengerich said. I was very thrilled to be named to the inaugural class of fellows. It really means a lot to me to have come to this point, and I thank everyone along the way.

Hamm was nominated by departmental colleague Tina Iverson, who holds the Louise B. McGavock Chair and is a professor of pharmacology. According to Iverson, Heidis long service to ASBMB, her national contributions to science advocacy, and her stature as a world leader in the field make Hamm an ideal member of the first cohort of ASBMB fellows. Hamm has been a member of ASBMB for many years and served as president of the organization from 2006-2008.

Hamm obtained her Ph.D. training at the University of Texas at Austin. Following a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of WisconsinMadison, she held faculty appointments at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago and Northwestern University before moving to Vanderbilt in 2000. Her research focus has centered on G protein-coupled receptor signaling, as well as on the structure and function of GTP binding proteins. GTP serves as a source of energy used for signal transduction processes.

While serving as the chair of the Department of Pharmacology between 2000 and 2014, Hamm oversaw an increase in its size and a quintupling of its NIH funding, catapulting it as the top NIH-funded pharmacology department in the nation during her tenure.

Hamms research efforts have been recognized through numerous awards, including the Robert R. Ruffolo Career Achievement Award in Pharmacology from the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, the Fritz Lipmann Memorial Lectureship from ASBMB, and the Ariens Award from the Dutch Pharmacological Society. Hamm was also elected a AAAS fellow in 2011.

Its a great honor to be chosen to the inaugural class of ASBMB fellows.ASBMB has been an anchor-point national society throughout my career, and Im excited to be included, said Hamm.

Considerations for Tracer Selection to Assess Biochemical Recurrence in Prostate Cancer – Cancer Network

Raoul S. Concepcion, MD, FACS: Dr Ghesani, educate us. You deal with this a lot, and you understand. You have a tracer, and then there are nuances to this based on half-life. Gallium has a particular half-life, and F-18 [fluorine-18] has a particular half-life. Obviously, choline has a particular half-life. How does that impact and how does that play out potentially, as these scans are made more available to the general practitioner, the community urologist and oncologist? What are the factors there that the practitioners need to know that are the nuanced differences between thosetracers?

Munir Ghesani, MD: I would like to make 2 more points that I just started thinking about as Brian and Judd mentioned those items. I would like to add on those as well. As Brian referenced, there are data that show theres less than 20% sensitivity for combination of bone scans and CT [computerized tomography] scans in the setting of biochemical recurrence. Theres even a bigger problem, which is that in the small minority of the patients where the scans pick up the disease, its misleading because it does not fully clarify the extent of disease. Therefore, if you superficially look at it, you will see about 20% or less benefit. But in fact, even a subgroup of those patients does not benefit because their disease has not been properly delineated. They may have disease that was picked up only in part by the CT and bone scans, and you may end up targeting your treatment and not recognizing that there may be disease outside what the CT and bone scan did not pick up.

For that reason, it will be important to work with the CMS [Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services] and other providers, and we are aggressively working in various societies by collaborating with one another to make these points clear. Hopefully, soon, these requirements for bone scans and CT scans will not be there. The second point I wanted to mention was in that polling question, the item about other, and this brings back to your question about all different options. There is also fluorine-18 FDG [fluorodeoxyglucose], which is the most used agent for most other cancers. It has been shown that for most cancers in the prostate it does not work, but with a very high Gleason score, they have very high level of glucose metabolism. Therefore, in a select and small subgroup of patients who have known to have a very high Gleason score, when they recur, one should also consider the possibility of FDG PET [positron emission tomography scan] or CT because in that subgroup, it is going to be very powerful.

Regarding your question about how we should choose. At the current level, the fluorine-18 half-life of 2 hours is readily available all around. It will be easy for the sides. Even after bone scan and CT scans have been negative, you have gone through the peer-to-peer and have an approval of fluciclovine, which would be the most used agent across the country at this time. For those sites that have the availability of gallium PSMA [prostate-specific membrane antigen] through the cross-referencing IND [investigational new drug] or clinical trials, but those would be mostly major academic centers. They can consider using gallium or fluorine PSMA-based agents. For small sitesthe Mayo Clinic, for examplewhere the C-11 choline was first developed, they can with cyclotron availability produce in a large batch, and we know that sites like the Mayo Clinic are doing a large number of carbon-11 PSMA scans.

Raoul S. Concepcion, MD, FACS: That is a limitation, isnt it? The half-life of the C-11 is so short that they cant

Munir Ghesani, MD: Its 20 minutes.

Raoul S. Concepcion, MD, FACS: You cant ship it a distance. To any of you, we know that fluciclovine Axumin is approved. It is approved in patients who have been treated for prostate cancer and have a rising PSA [prostate-specific antigen]. Correct me if Im wrong, but doesnt that include patients on active surveillance whose PSA [is rising]? Can you make the argument that active surveillance is a treatment and if they have a rising PSA, you could get fluciclovine? Have any of you tried that?

Brian Helfand, MD, PhD: You can make that argument. I dont think its correct. Ive seen it done, and its not really the FDA indication. What they mean is that interventions with curative intent, or subsequent hormone therapy that the patient is progressing. However, active surveillance was not part of that initial approval indication. Having said that, in the world many things are done whether theres evidence or not evidence for that. Therefore, we dont generally monitor our active surveillance patients with that.

Raoul S. Concepcion, MD, FACS:Perfect.

ABSTRACT

While we have been looking for alternative educational materials for our undergraduate students, we found ourself in Covid-19 pandemic and had to think postgraduate education. On the first day of restrictions, our major problem was to learn and find the best communication tool. The first experiences for online meetings were boring, we were not feeling our emotions but as days past we got used to it. We all understand the importance of having alternatives and have to be ready for second choices. During those challenging days, all had more time to work on our completed data, time to write, complete the proofreading of written materials. Other vital scientific activities for career development and profile building such as reading (every meeting with new articles/reviews), publishing and preparing oral presentation were fully completed during the online meetings as a part of lab meeting activities. They learned to improve communication skills, be active participants, and fight.

UMW Symposium Spotlights Student Research and Creativity – News – University of Mary Washington

Ashley Utz knows that over-the-counter medications like Prilosec and Prevacid are typically used to treat ulcers, reflux and other common stomach disorders. But the senior biochemistry major has a theory that these drugs, known as proton-pump inhibitors (PPI), could also help destroy cancer cells.

Tomorrow, along with more than 100 of her University of Mary Washington peers, Utz will share this trailblazing research, which shes toiled away on in Jepson Science Center labs for the past year, in the midst of a global pandemic. The 15th annual UMW Research and Creativity Symposium, held virtually again this year due to COVID-19, will put a spotlight on one of Mary Washingtons top priorities: undergraduate research. Featuring PDF posters and oral synopses on video, Thursdays presentations will span disciplines from science to sociology, math to music and classics to communication and will remain accessible through Friday for questions and comments.

When students discover how to pursue and investigate their own research questions, interpret the information they uncover and communicate their findings, it brings their learning to life and puts the knowledge and skills theyve gained into practice, said College of Arts and Sciences Assistant Dean Betsy Lewis, who described her own undergraduate research experiences as life-changing.

Last year was an experiment, said Lewis, who was in charge of moving the event online when Mary Washington suddenly switched to remote learning last spring. But she hailed the day as a success. The entire UMW community pulled together to support students.

Other schools showcase student research, she noted, but UMWs event is one of the longest running and widest reaching. Few universities cover so many disciplines in one symposium.

More than 70 projects submitted by nearly 150 students explore topics from music therapy to Middle Eastern immigration, from censorship to coffee bean growth, from accessibility in libraries to antifungal resistance, from resident curator programs to rural health care access. The projects were completed individually or in teams for coursework, senior capstones and departmental honors, while working in close consultation with, and often alongside, faculty with appropriate masking and social distancing.

COVID-19 inspired seniors Jenna Holland, Rachel Walters and Isabella Burns, who explored the impact of the pandemic on teachers in Nepal for their public sociology course. Under the mentorship of Associate Professor of Sociology Leslie Martin, the trio teamed up with three students enrolled at UMWs partner institution in the south Asian country, who helped them survey 107 educators in Kathmandu.

The teachers pandemic problems werent so different from their American counterparts, Burns said. Internet access was a common issue, and there was a clear dissatisfaction with remote technological devices. She recently joined Holland and Walters in penning a reflective essay of their cross-cultural learning experiences, which was published in the Undergraduate Journal of Service Learning & Community-Based Research.

Students like Utz have benefited from the types of high-impact learning opportunities offered at UMW. For the past four years, shes assisted Associate Professor of Chemistry Randall Reif with his research. Now, the tables have turned.

This project was so special because I was able to craft it entirely myself, with my professors guidance, said Utz, who hopes her findings will contribute to existing knowledge about the drugs doctors have at their disposal to treat cancer. PPIs are currently used with chemotherapy, she said, but little research exists on their effectiveness as stand-alone anti-cancer agents. We hope our work will be one of many research efforts to answer that question.

Senior biochemistry major Ashley Utz is exploring whether over-the-counter drugs like Prilosec and Prevacid can be used as standalone anti-cancer agents.

Ashley Utz treats Jurkat cells, a model cell line for studying the effects of certain drugs on cancer. After graduating from UMW, she plans to pursue a Ph.D. in molecular and structural biochemistry at NC State University, and eventually, a career in cancer research.

Graduating next month, shell soon move on to North Carolina State University to pursue a Ph.D. in molecular and structural biochemistry, and eventually, a career in cancer research. But Utz is confident that her project will be in good hands, as shes training UMW sophomore Shreya Murali to take it over this summer.

While I may not continue with this particular research, Utz said, it will live on at UMW.

Study on the influence of LEDs light quality on the growth pigments biochemical and chlorophyll fluorescence characteristics of tomato seedlings -…

Tomato is a globally strategic crop and consumers need it throughout the year. To have a healthy and productive tomato plant, a high-quality seedling is a necessity. Toward this end, the current research was to improve a system for producing tomato seedlings in plant factories using light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

The results indicated that tomato seedlings of both cultivars under (Red 70% + Blue 30%) showed the greatest plant height and the largest total leaf area. The best treatment for the accumulation of soluble protein and soluble sugar contents for Gangmu No.1 and Millennium cultivars were (Red 50%+Green 20%+ Blue 30%) and Red 100%, respectively. The Non-Photochemical Quenching under (Red 50%+Green 20%+ Blue 30%) treatment was the lowest for Gangmu No.1, while it was the lowest under white fluorescent light for Millennium. The electron transport rate under white fluorescent light treatment was the highest for Gangmu No.1, while it was the highest under (Red 70% + Blue 30%) for Millennium.

The results indicated that the mixture of red and blue at (Red 70% + Blue 30%) was beneficial for the growth of tomato seedlings for both cultivars, which could be efficiently used in plant factories and provide some data for different LED light ratios applicable in a closed system to demonstrate how to get the best lighting conditions for tomato seedlings.

Siler Ready to Meet Future as USM Readies for In-Person Graduation Ceremonies – Southern Miss Now

Thu, 04/29/2021 - 14:45pm | By: David Tisdale

Stay focused, but also find joy in the quest for knowledge and your degree.

Thats the advice graduating senior Camryn Siler has for those students coming behind her, as she plots her next moves after graduating from The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) next week. The university is preparing to hold multiple commencement ceremonies May 3-8, the first in-person graduation events since the Covid-19 pandemic.

You generally walk into your classes with the mindset of focusing on what you have to learn in order to pass, but take the time to really get into what your professor is teaching, said Siler, a native of Crestview, Florida. Any time youre enjoying something, it comes easier to you, so learn to make the best of what youre given.

And Siler has done just that during her time in Hattiesburg. A biological sciences major with an emphasis in biomedicine and minors in chemistry and biochemistry, she aspires to attend medical school. An Academic Excellence Scholar and a Jump Scholar, Siler earned the Scholastic Excellence Award on multiple occasions, Presidents List status and is a member of USMs National Society of Leadership Success.

Her USM roots run deep, as both of her parents and siblings attended the university, so I grew up around the campus, she said. Her father, Kenny Siler, helped lead the Golden Eagles mens basketball team to the 1987 National Invitation Tournament (NIT) championship.

Siler said being a student employee with USM Campus Recreation since she first started at USM was one of the first ways I became exposed to the USM culture, and it helped me get to know lots of people and make so many good friends. Other highlights of her USM experience include those where she learned something while having fun, too, including her job shadowing experience with Dr. Melissa Roberts, director of the USM Moffitt Student Health Center.

I learned [from Dr. Roberts] that being a doctor is more than poking and prodding people and filling out the paperwork to go with it, she said. It constitutes using your personality to make someone comfortable enough to even continue with their appointment, and gaining their trust in order for them to follow doctors orders.

She also praised her academic advisor, Dr. Janet Donaldson, for helping guide her through some challenges along the way, and also being there to help celebrate the high points.

Dr. D has been nothing but a blessing to me, Siler said.

Silers plans following graduation include pursuing a masters degree in biomedical sciences at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, Texas, and then later applying to medical school; after medical school and residency, shed like to work in an outpatient center or hospital as an anesthesiologist.

Camryn was an absolute delight to have as one of my advisees, Dr. Donaldson said. She was always diligent about her work and such a pleasure to just talk to about school and her career ambitions. She is so sweet and so smart; I have no doubt she will be successful in whichever path life takes her.

In reflecting on the last year and the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on her academic experience and in all other aspects of life, Siler says the experience taught her to look within for motivation.

Im so used to having a huge support system that I forgot I have to want these things in life just as much as they want them for me, Siler said. So now Im very excited about the opportunity to be walking across that stage, and really couldnt imagine the ceremony being strictly virtual. We have all worked hard to make this happen and I think we all deserve a big congratulations for that.

Im also excited to be sharing this moment with last semesters graduates. The more the merrier!

Delhi: Third staffer death at Lok Nayak Hospital in three days – The Indian Express

A 58-year-old senior technical officer at Lok Nayak Hospital, Jessy Mathews, died of Covid-related complications on Tuesday. Mathews had been working at the hospital for 10 years.

She started work at a dispensary but soon was employed at the hospitals biochemistry department.

She is survived by her husband and a daughter. Her family said her husband is unwell, and her final rites were performed by her daughter at Mangolpuri.

Her colleagues said Mathews was among the oldest staffers at the biochemistry lab but was ambitious and keen on learning new technologies.

I will always remember her as someone who loved to learn new things and never gave up. When she joined, things were different. Our lab is fully automated now, we have highly complicated biochemical analysers. We thought it would be difficult for her to adapt but she was quick. She was sincere and was kind to all her juniors, said an officer at the hospital, who did not wish to be named.

Mathews lived with her family in Delhis Mangolpuri. She had got the second Covid shot last month.

Till April 20, she was on duty at the hospital and was performing routine tests for patients coming in.

The next day, she complained of uneasiness and was tested for Covid. On April 22, her report came back and she was sent for home isolation.

Her family said she was doing well and was recovering but on Monday her oxygen saturation level dropped suddenly.

Her junior at the department said, We received a call from her family about her health. She was immediately admitted to Lok Nayak. We thought she would recover. She was healthy she only had an arthritis issue but she died on Tuesday. Her husband is also unwell. We tried and helped her daughter with the last rites.

Mathews is the third staffer from Lok Nayak who has succumbed to Covid in the last three days. Two nursing officers Elizabeth Joseph and Ravinder Kaur had died earlier this week. Both had not been vaccinated, their families and colleagues said.

Hanson, Grafstein elected to arts and sciences academy | Cornell Chronicle – Cornell Chronicle

Maureen Hanson, the Liberty Hyde Bailey Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and in the College of Arts and Sciences, and Bernice Grafstein, the Vincent and Brooke Astor Distinguished Professor in Neuroscience at Weill Cornell Medicine, have beenelected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the academy announced April 22.

They are among 252 newly elected members 55% of whom are women honored for individual achievements inacademia, the arts, business, government and public affairs.

We are honoring the excellence of these individuals, celebrating what they have achieved so far and imagining what they will continue to accomplish, said David Oxtoby, president of the academy. The past year has been replete with evidence of how things can get worse; this is an opportunity to illuminate the importance of art, ideas, knowledge and leadership that can make a better world.

Newly elected academy members include media mogul and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey, musician Robbie Robertson (The Band), New York Times journalist Kara Swisher, and neurosurgeon and CNN medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta.

Im quite honored to be invited to join this distinguished group, Hanson said, which includes not only scientists, but also many writers, composers, architects and other artists whose work I enjoy and achievements I admire.

Hanson, director of the Center for Enervating Neuroimmune Disease, has two different research programs: plant biology, focusing on the genome-containing organelles of plants, chloroplasts and mitochondria; and the pathophysiology of human myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS).

Recent plant biology research includes published work on a key plant enzyme, Rubisco, responsible for converting carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into the building blocks of plants.

Regarding ME/CFS, one current project is examining metabolism of immune cells and metabolites in plasma; another aims to identify differences in gene expression and cargo of extracellular vesicles at baseline and following exercise, in both healthy individuals and those diagnosed with ME/CFS.

Hanson is a member of the graduate fields of genetics, genomics and development; plant biology; and biochemistry, molecular and cell biology.

She received her doctorate in cell and developmental biology in 1976 from Harvard, then held a National Institutes of Health National Research Service Award postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard. She joined the faculty of the University of Virginia in 1979, before joining the Cornell faculty as an associate professor in 1985. She was promoted to full professor in 1991.

Hanson is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and of the American Society of Plant Biologists.

Grafstein, a renowned neuroscientist, has made pioneering discoveries about nerve cell damage and regeneration during a career that has spanned more than five decades.

Im extremely thrilled, said Grafstein, who is also a professor of physiology and biophysics. And I love the fact that this has come at a mature point in my career. I can savor it all the more now.

Grafsteins earliest work as a graduate student, on brain phenomena related to migraine aura and stroke, has survived as a classical reference for more than 50 years. Many of her subsequent studies were done on goldfish optic nerves, which show robust regeneration after injury and thus provide important insights into the potential for regeneration in the human nervous system.

Her work with neurosurgeon Dr. Irvine McQuarrie, M.D. 65, Ph.D. 77, a former assistant professor of physiology and surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine, showed that nerve regrowth after an injury was regulated by changes further back in the nerve cell than the site of injury. This finding is important for developing methods to improve recovery from injuries of human nerves and brain pathways.

Her research has also illuminated the process of axonal transport, which conveys building materials within nerve cells and is critical to their development and function.

Essentially what I discovered was that things were moving much faster than had been imagined until then, she said.

Her technique for showing that some material jumped from one nerve cell to the next at the synaptic connections was used in the 1981 Nobel Prize-winning work of David Hubel and Torsten Wiesel on the development of the visual system.

Grafstein received a bachelors degree in physiology from the University of Toronto and a Ph.D. in neurophysiology from McGill University. She went on to postgraduate work in the Department of Anatomy at University College London and a faculty position at McGill before moving to Rockefeller University. In 1969 she joined the Department of Physiology at Weill Cornell Medicine.

Professors discover way to keep COVID-19 virus from sticking to human cells – The Brown and White

Bioengineering Professors X. Frank Zhang and Wonpil Im have discovered a way to prevent the COVID-19 virus from sticking to receptors on human cells.

Im and Zhang both had experience studying proteins, but when the pandemic hit they shifted their focus. They were inspired to start their research on SARS-CoV-2 spike receptor proteins to contribute to the fight against the pandemic.

Professor Im and I were interested in this new virus and how it worked, Zhang said. We wanted to know why it was so dangerous and infectious.

While Im and Zhang were trying to find a way to prevent the virus, they also faced challenges associated with the pandemic, including a three month partial pause to their research due to lockdowns.

Once they were given permission to start working again in June, they had to pick up the pace of their research in a race against the spread of the virus.

As (scientists) we ask the question: how can our expertise help this issue, Zhang said.

Im and Zhangs research focuses on spike receptors which are branches stemming from the center of the viruss body. These parts of the cell are responsible for bonding with the cells in the human body, and once they have bonded, humans are able to spread and feel the effects of the virus.

Im and Zhangs research prevents the spike receptor from binding to the cells in our body. In their experiments, they would use a COVID-19 spike receptor and would bind it to a human cell. They would then measure how much force it would take to decouple to a receptor from the cell.

What makes Im and Zhangs research unique is that they used an experimental technique created by Zhang.

His technique can measure the strength (of the bond) between the viruss spike protein and the human receptor, Im said.

Along with Zhangs experimental technique, Im used a computational modeling simulation to provide detailed on Zhangs experiment.

Because of their teamwork, their findings have a greater significance and you can come to understand the issues and get a deeper answer, said Biology Professor Vassie Ware.

The results of the experiment would not be possible without Ims expertise in computational model simulations and Zhangs novel single molecule detection method.

Because Im and Zhang were experimenting on how to detach the virus from the cell, their research will most likely be used as a cure to COVID-19 for those who currently have the virus, rather than a preventative method.

Although the study could have groundbreaking implications, Zhang believes that with the time it takes to develop and manufacture a new drug, their study will likely not have a tangible impact on the current pandemic.

The time it takes to create a drug and have it pass through the FDA means that this discovery may not be able to catch this pandemic, but it will be helpful for future outbreaks, Zhang said.

In the meantime, Im and Zhang plan on continuing their research and move onto more infectious and dangerous variants of the COVID-19 virus.

Looking towards the future through an interdisciplinary lens | Penn Today – Penn Today

While reflecting on her undergraduate journey at Penn, senior Yasmina Al Ghadban says that she has a ton of memories she will take with her: lifelong friends made and skills developed through coursework, research, and teaching experiences, the chance to engage with public health communities on campus, and traveling for courses and internships. That's the beauty of Penn, she says. There's just so many opportunities everywhere.

As a double major in bioengineering and psychology, Al Ghadban, who is from Beirut, has certainly taken advantage of many such opportunities. Now, she is poised to leverage her interdisciplinary lens towards a future career in public health.

Looking for a place to grow and become more independent, Al Ghadban decided to come to Penn after graduating from the International College in Lebanon. After taking an introduction to bioengineering course during her freshman year, she became enthralled by the hands-on nature of the program and enrolled in the School of Engineering and Applied Science. I really enjoyed working with circuits and Arduino, being able to synthesize things, and I felt like being in engineering was the place where I was going to gain the most skills, she says.

Al Ghadban is applying those skills as she completes her senior design project. She and a team of four seniors are building an autonomous robot equipped with Lidar sensors that it uses to create a map of a physical space. The team also programmed their robot to recognize high-touch surfaces that it then disinfects with UV light. Its a technology that is completely autonomous, cheaper than whats on the market, and doesnt put people at risk when they go in to disinfect, she says. The team recently put the finishing touches on the project and presented their robot as part of a demonstration on April 14.

In addition to her degree in engineering, Al Ghadbans interests in public and mental health spurred her to take courses and eventually pursue a double major in psychology, a field that she sees as complementary to engineering. In psychology, we focus a lot on research and study design, research bias, and these things are similar in engineering and psychology, she says. Overall, I think they gave me different perspectives in terms of problem solving, and its nice to have that interdisciplinary lens.

One place where Al Ghadban was able to use this interdisciplinary lens was while working as an research assistant in the Rehabilitation Robotics Lab with Michelle Johnson during her sophomore year. The focus of the lab is to create robots for post-stroke rehabilitation, and the robotics part is very engineering-focused, but there is another part where people struggle doing the exercises, she says. Being able to engage with people and increasing their likelihood of doing that intervention, you rely on a lot from psychology, like interventions from positive psychology or research on how people stay engaged.

Throughout her senior year, Al Ghadban has also been working as a teaching assistant for Math 240, part of the four-course calculus sequence. In addition to grading and office hours, Al Ghadban teaches two recitations each week. Its been really awesome to be able to help students, she says. It's helped me think of new ways to deliver information, especially in the virtual world where it forces you to be more innovative in your teaching methods. It really has been one of the highlights of my Penn experience, and Im so glad I got to do it.

Al Ghadban has also been engaged with the mental health and wellness community throughout her time at Penn. She worked as an anti-violence educator through Penn Violence Prevention, where she led regular workshops on bystander intervention; served as the president of Penn Wellness, a student think tank group focused on wellness issues and initiatives on campus; and worked as a training director for the Reach-A-Peer Helpline. Shes also currently an intern at the Penn Womens Center. Mental health and interpersonal-violence prevention are really important to me, and these are two things that Ive been lucky to be engaged at Penn in different capacities, she says.

Through her professional and extracurricular activities, Al Ghadban realized that she wanted to go into public health and medicine as a career. Last year, she decided to submatriculate into Penns Master of Public Health program to become more engaged with these topics inside the classroom.

She sees her interdisciplinary lens as a useful perspective for a future career in family medicine or as an OB/GYN. If Im involved in research, a lot of the skills that I learned in engineering would be translational, and psychology and public health are very directly related in that way as well, she says.

After graduation, she will be staying local while completing a virtual summer internship with the Sexual and Reproductive Health Branch at the United Nations Population Fund. She is hoping to spend some of the time exploring more of Philadelphia and regional parks with her dog, Lylah.

For now, as she reflects back on her four years as an undergraduate student, shes grateful for the breadth and diversity of activities and opportunities shes been able to engage with on campus.

I have been really privileged to be involved in so many widely different things, and I really hope that in graduate school, even though it's going to be more focused, I can still find spaces where I can explore different things that interest me, she says. Im really going to miss talking to anyone on campus and feeling like I can grow from that conversation, and that's something that I don't think I could have gained somewhere else.

The Coolest Data Science And Machine Learning Tool Companies Of The 2021 Big Data 100 – CRN

Learning Curve

As businesses and organizations strive to manage ever-growing volumes of data and, even more important, derive value from that data, they are increasingly turning to data engineering and machine learning tools to improve and even automate their big data processes and workflows.

As part of the 2021 Big Data 100, CRN has compiled a list of data science and machine learning tool companies that solution providers should be aware of. While most of these are not exactly household names, some, including DataRobot, Dataiku and H2O, have been around for a number of years and have achieved significant market presence. Others, including dotData, are more recent startups.

This week CRN is running the Big Data 100 list in slideshows, organized by technology category, with vendors of business analytics software, database systems, data management and integration software, data science and machine learning tools, and big data systems and platforms.

(Some vendors market big data products that span multiple technology categories. They appear in the slideshow for the technology segment in which they are most prominent.)
