Most people will notice a use-by or sell-by date listed on their vitamin or supplement packaging. While this date can give consumers an idea of when it's time to replace their product, it's not exactly an expiration date like the kind you see on food or other perishable items.

"The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not require vitamin supplements to have expiration dates," ophthalmologist Brian Boxer Wachler, M.D., tells mbg. Most companies go through tests to determine how long it will take for their vitamins to lose potency, and that's usually the date you'll see listed.

"Loss of potency can then translate to decreased efficacy or effectiveness,"says Javeed Siddiqui, M.D., MPH, chief medical officer at TeleMed2U.

Are there side effects of taking expired vitamins?

According to Lewis, vitamins generally don't go "bad," the way spoiled milk will. In other words, there are no direct side effects from taking vitamins or supplements past their listed use-by date. Since they're less potent, though, you may not get the necessary health benefits needed from the product.

Young doctors on whats keeping them hooked to Ayurveda – The Indian Express

The call for a more balanced and healthy living is being answered in the pandemic with the re-emergence of traditional practices for the body, mind, and soul. One such age-old practice gaining popularity is Ayurveda indicative of ancient wisdom and knowledge that practitioners have amassed over years.

One look at social media, however, will tell you that many of todays Ayurvedic practitioners are young and well-connected with several hundreds of people through their channels. They also have an advanced educational degree in the practice and allied fields to further their case. So, what is driving this change? Indianexpress.com reached out to some practitioners to understand more about their tryst with this form of medicine, catering to an audience spread across the globe, and why Ayurveda retains an edge for them.

Before the Ayurvedic medical educational system, healers carried the rich tradition of Ayurveda on their shoulders for centuries. A traditional Ayurveda healer is one who acquires knowledge from family elders. Some of them have a thorough knowledge of principles, do strict and pure application, have no bias against the modern medical system, and have sound knowledge of rare Ayurvedic herbs, explained Dr Shyam VL, WHO member for Ayurveda Health Practices Benchmark, founder and director Back to Roots, Kerala, India.

Born to parents who insisted on living with a healthy discipline, the 47-year-old with an experience of 20 years, arrived in UAE in 2000 when Ayurveda was not a recognised system of medicine. Later in 2002, he got the first Ayurveda license in the country from the Ministry of Health in UAE. In 2017, he was awarded the Health Excellence Award for the best physician by Dubai Health Authority. I got admission into Ayurveda studies after my 12th standard in India. And then I came to the realisation that Ayurveda is not just a medical system that treats a few diseases; rather, it is the way of life and the intelligence of life and nature. I was able to connect Ayurveda with the traditional and cultural lifestyle practices of my family. Ayurveda teaches us how to live in sync and harmony with nature, Dr Shyam, who has studied eight-and-a-half years in an Ayurveda college for the BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine, and Surgery) and MD (Doctor of Medicine), said.

Ayurveda has its foundations in the ancient schools of Indian philosophical teachings named Samkhya, Vaisheshika, and the school of logic Nyaya. From ancient physicians, the knowledge of traditional medicines was passed on to the disciples, and then to the common man by various writings and oral narrations. The information about Ayurveda and the healing properties of the herbs was composed in the form of poems, called shlokas, as per experts.

Calling Ayurveda a Bible in terms of sustainability, Dr Shyam explained how the treatment indentifies the root cause of the issue and then aims to cure it entirely. Ayurveda teaches about longevity, keeping the body, mind, and the world in perfect harmony. Metabolic and auto-immune diseases have become major health problems. It is so important to look back into this ancient intelligence and begin to put on its principles to protect the earth and ourselves, Dr Shyam, who has over 10,000 followers on social media, said.

Seconding him, Dr Dixa Bhavsar, an ayurvedic practitioner, who regularly shares Instagram videos on simple lifestyle tweaks that can come in handy said: Ayurveda is literally science (knowledge) of life rather than just a treatment modality unlike other systems of medicine. It inculcates the whole human life as it teaches us everything from dinacharya (daily-routine), ritucharya (seasonal-routine), ratricharya (night- rituals), and pathya- apathya (what to eat and what to avoid based on ones prakriti or nature), said the 27-year-old, who has been practising for the past four years.

Back in 2016, when Dr Dixa was about to complete her internship in Ayurveda medicine, she got diagnosed with hypothyroidism just like her mother. But she refused to take any allopathy medicines. My TSH or thyroid-stimulating hormone was 28 then (which is really high). But I followed a strict Ayurvedic regime, along with yoga, and within a month, my TSH reduced to 14. This made me believe in the healing powers of Ayurveda. Since then, Ive been following and suggesting Ayurveda, Dr Dixa, who has a social media following of more than 6,000, shared.

The first line of treatment in Ayurveda is avoiding the causative factors of diseases. With food and lifestyle changes and medicines (if needed) Ayurveda can completely cure many of the diseases, said Dr Aiswarya Santhosh from Kerala.

Dr Aparna K, BAMS, MD, PhD in Ayurveda with 12 years of clinical practice, also stands by its ability to heal, provided one takes the effort to stick to a routine. I see the youth today are somehow disconnected from their rootsstaying healthy has taken a back seat due to a highly competitive work-life schedule and stress. Many lifestyle disorders like diabetes, blood pressure, PCOD have crept in very early and many of the youth are not aware of having a routine, respecting ones biological clock, etc. Its the need of the hour to spread this ancient wisdom of living healthy, setting a routine, managing emotional and physical stressors on a daily basis, said the doctor, whose father was an Ayurvedic doctor with over 40 years of experience.

She added: Ayurveda stands for predictability and sustainability. The more we are in a routine, the more our nervous system will be at ease. And immunity will improve and susceptibility to falling sick reduces.

In the pandemic, herbs and spices became the go-to immunity boosters, suggesting Ayurveda could help improve the bodys immune system, an idea also strongly propagated by the Government of India through Ministry of AYUSH as well as Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Practitioners, however, point out that Ayurveda, with a 5000-year-long history, needs a much broader approach and understanding beyond tips, home remedies, and solution-specific approach. Ayurveda is so much more than just home remedies or having chyawanprash, turmeric, and triphala. Ayurveda guarantees permanent treatment of disorders like thyroid, diabetes, blood pressure, for which people take medicines throughout their life, claimed Dr Dixa.

For a beginner, home remedy is a good way to introduce Ayurveda, but one must realise Ayurveda is beyond it. I am trying to focus on sharing case studies, experiences and photos of patients before and after healing. Ayurveda is all about imbibing practices of diet and lifestyle which help to live a better life. So many research studies are coming up on how things work and I am sure the future is bright, said Dr Aparna, who has over 5,000 followers on her social media channels.

While the ultimate goal for any patient is to heal whether through Ayurveda, homeopathy, naturopathy, yoga, reiki or modern medicine there is always a constant comparison with modern medicine, while being called alternative or parallel. While Dr Shyam mentioned that the world is gravitating towards integrative medicine to forgo the differences, Dr Aparna aims for co-existence with both systems of medicine being needed on a case-by-case basis. While Dr Aiswarya points out that Ayurveda holds good for old-age disorders, arthritis, gastrointestinal disorders, etc, Dr Dixa is of the opinion that its important to adapt to whichever system suits the body and helps to heal. Faith in your system of medicine is of prime importance. If you believe in it, it will give you health and happiness undoubtedly, she said.

Some Ayurvedic principles that can be incorporated are:

*Wake up early (before 7 am)*Practise 12 Surya Namaskars daily*Have light breakfast, moderate lunch, and lightest dinner*Have early dinner (best before 7 pm but never post 9 pm)*No gadgets one hour before bedtime*Practise alternate nasal breathing 11 times at bedtime daily

Dr Dixa suggested some simple everyday practices beneficial for all, based on Ayurveda:

*Kavala (Oil-Pulling)- Oil-pulling involves putting one tablespoon of oil in your mouth and swishing it for about 15- 20 minutes. It is ideally done on an empty stomach, which is best to pull out all kinds of built-up toxins from the mouth; the body but only after brushing your teeth. In Ayurvedic medicine, the mouth is considered to be a mirror for the entire body, so keeping your oral cavity healthy impacts positively on gut health and overall health of your body.*Nasya (nasal-drops)- Instilling 2 drops of warm cows ghee in nostrils daily helps in improving immunity, reduces stress, prevents and helps in managing sinusitis, migraine, and cold.*Vyayama (Exercise)- We all know how exercise makes us feel energetic physically and happy mentally. Dont spend a day without exercise.*Abhyanga (Oil-massage)- Self-massage daily can help delay ageing, strengthen muscles, and reduce dryness.*Garshana (Dry brushing while bathing)- It helps detoxify the lymphatic system which in turn refreshes your skin and mind.

Meet Some Of DC’s Top Nurses Finding Joy During The Crisis – Because of Them We Can

Not all heroes wear capes!

It's been almost a year since the country and the world were thrown into chaos, upending our everyday lives. The economy, infrastructure, and especially the medical industry have taken a beating, yet the essential workers have been a saving grace. One group of everyday heroes has been nurses, who have risked not only their lives but physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing. With the pandemic disproportionally impacting our community, Black frontline workers have gone above and beyond the call of duty. They deserve our acknowledgment, praise, and respect.

We've partnered with the National Association of Black Nurses -whorecently began an initiative to offer free mental health services to Black nurses - to highlight some of the brave people offering their time, love, and care to those in need.

These DMV-area nurses have spent years in the field and are continuing to navigate these uncertain times with grace.Because Of Them We Canreached out and asked them to share how they take care of themselves while excelling at their jobs. Interviews edited for clarity and brevity.

How have you been able to find joy and take care of yourself during this time?

I've found joy having a front-row seat watching my triplet daughters grow and thrive. This past year caused me to slow down a bit and be in the clinic a little less due to telehealth capability. I've been able to be home more with my family. Watching the world through their eyes is a source of joy for sure! I've also found immense joy in helping other nurse practitioners secure jobs, learn the art of negotiation, and transition into the workforce as NPs!

Honestly, self-care has been a bit of a struggle. I've worked full-time through the pandemic. I carry the weight of my patients' experiences, being a mother of three, a wife, and running a negotiation coaching business for nurse practitioners - there's been little time left for me. I've found moments of self-care in cooking new recipes, being a plant mom, getting back to home workouts, and spending Sundays at my parents' house - my only break!

How do you view your job in this moment?Essential! I truly believe I'm living in my purpose as I care for women across their lifespan and, even more so, during a double pandemic of COVID-19 and racial inequities in healthcare. As a nurse practitioner in obstetrics and gynecology, I'm helping women through some of the most vulnerable stages of their life. When the black morbidity and mortality rate in this country is terrifying, I get to be a source of hope and knowledge for my patients. Nurses have always been the heartbeat in healthcare, but at this moment, we are the light on the hill. I'm so proud to be serving at this moment, and don't take it lightly that the care I give will impact generations of women to come.

How have you been able to find joy and take care of yourself during this time?Joy is my middle name, "Enjoy life" is my life's mantra. Anyone who knows me understands that I try to find the silver lining in everything I do. I am currently living with terminal stage 4 metastatic breast cancer that has spread to my lungs, hip, spine, and ribs for five years now. There are days where I can't even get out of bed, but I still find joy in my heart. Finding Joy has been my no. 1 priority. I have my fun-loving husband who keeps my heart beating; I have a small farm full of produce, chickens, ducks, bees, and my loving dogs - two German Shepherds.

My husband and I dealt with infertility, so we could not bear children, but we have six beautiful, fun-loving godchildren that call and visit me, which always fills up my energy and joy meter. I also play video games, read, and have mini dance parties in the house. I don't take life for granted, and I cherish the little things. As long as I'm living, trust me when I say I'm living with joy despite it all.

How do you view your job in this moment?Having cancer places me at a higher risk of getting COVID-19, which makes getting it life-threatening. Although, I have not been able to work as much as I used to - due to cancer. I do have the privilege of still helping and working once a week as a primary care provider doing telemedicine. At first, I had nurses-guilt because I felt like I should be in the hospital setting helping my fellow nurses, but I then realized that I am still helping. I would be no good to anyone if I were to catch COVID-19. So again, I saw the silver lining.

I miss seeing my patients in person, but it's good that I can still connect and help my patients while maintaining safety. It feels marvelous being a healthcare professional during these times; the sacrifice, work, and grit that it takes to be a nurse are now being shown. Being a nurse can be tiring, but we do it for our patients and the world's betterment. It's good to see that the world is now appreciating healthcare professionals and seeing how vital we are to society. As long as I'm still breathing, I will continue to help my patients. I also serve as a patient advocate for Metastatic Breast Cancer awareness. I can now utilize my medical knowledge and support in the fight to help cure, provide life longevity, and clinical research for the Breast Cancer Community, especially in the Black community. Statistically, we die at a 40% higher rate than our white counterparts. It's my mission to make sure change happens until my last breath.

My faith in God and love for those I hold dear to my heart, has given me joy. Every day, I live as if it is my last, and I do not take anything or anybody for granted. Those things that I would have usually put off, I focus on enjoying now. Pre-pandemic, I would have worked myself to death with little time to spend with my husband and son. Now I pre-plan my mental health days to pour out all the love I can on my family.

How do you view your job in this moment?

Currently, I hold a position as a lead nurse in adult and family practice. I enjoy helping those in need. I pride myself on fighting for and doing my best to protect my patients. I'm known as the nurse that can break it down in layman's terms. My patients trust me and tend to have great outcomes because they understand their disease process. As a result, I view my job as essential in [providing preventative medicine]!

I have been able to find joy in the fact that I am healthy and my household is healthy. Being a nurse during a pandemic is stressful and can take a toll on you physically and emotionally if you don't prioritize yourself. I take care of myself by allowing myself enough time off between workdays to reset and making sure not to take on too much outside of work.

How do you view your job in this moment?I love my job taking care of women during one of their most vulnerable times in life. Soon I'll be taking care of women on an advanced practitioner level with my new career as a midwife. I'm excited to step into the next phase of my job because I know my presence is needed. The Black maternal mortality rate in the US is insane, and I intend to be a part of that change.

Being a nurse can be a stressful and emotionally taxing profession, so I've grown to value my self-care truly. Ensuring that I get plenty of rest on my days off is a must! The pandemic has made it a little easier to do since many extracurricular activities have been eliminated. Solo movie dates used to be my jam but have been replaced with Netflix evenings. Scheduled vacations, massages, and creative outlets - photography and music - are ways I find joy and practice self-care.

How do you view your job in this moment?

One word: Essential. Nursing has and will always be the backbone of healthcare. I don't know that I consider it any differently now than I ever have. The pandemic has brought the nursing profession into the spotlight. I am providing the same compassionate and life-saving care now that I have been pre-COVID. What has been amplified is the emotional support provided to family members. They are trying to navigate drastic changes in visitation policies while managing the stress of a sick loved one.

2 Plays From Catalyst: A Theatre Think Tank – UC Davis

The Department of Theatre and Dance and Catalyst: A Theatre Think Tank, a launching pad for new works, raise the remote curtain this week on two productions examining diverse contemporary themes.

Jonathan Luskin, whose Kill the Wabbit was workshopped at UC Davis in 2018, is back with Perfect, three interwoven stories exploring the boundless desire for flawless children and the impossibility of objectively defining what that means.

Catalyst productions may contain adult situations and language.

Six actors portray 13 characters, including a cell biologist and her brilliant, wheelchair-using son who discover their research is being used to clean disabilities from the human genome; and a young couple who turn to an app to design the perfect child. They will present the play as an informal reading at 6 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 17).

Perfectis directed by alumnaJanLee Marshall(M.F.A, dramatic art, 15) and features actor Danny Gomez, recipient of the 2020 Media Access Award, which recognizes depictions of disability that are accurate, inclusive and multifaceted. The cast also includes undergraduate students Sophie Brubaker, Cheryl Kuo, Kyle Nagasawa and Aubrey Schoeman. Undergraduate student Sam Votrian is the stage manager.

In A Bee in a Jar by Andrew Nichols, three men with very different temperaments try to figure out why they were seized a month earlier and locked together in a featureless room. The play will be performed at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday (Feb. 19 and 20).

Nicholls is a television writer and author who has worked on The Tonight Show and numerous Nickelodeon shows. He is the author of the recently published Comedy Writer: Craft Advice From a Veteran of Sitcoms, Sketch, Animation, Late Night, Print and Stage Comedy. His play {LOVE/logic} was staged at UC Davis in 2019.

Theatre and television actor Laura Hall, who appeared on Broadway in Wonderland and in the national tour of the revival of Pippin, is the director. She has recently relocated from New York to Sacramento County.

The cast includes alumni Jordan Brownlee (B.A., cinema and digital media, 20), Nate Challis (B.A., theatre and dance, 20) and Noah VanderVeer-Harris (B.A., theatre and dance, 20), as well as undergraduate studentsErolina Kamburova andHailey Peterson. Undergraduate studentShachar-Lee Yaakobovitz is the stage manager.

As a virtual new works festival this year, Catalysts online process allows actors and creative teams to collaborate from various locations across time zones.

Broadway veteran Mindy Cooper, professor of theatre and dance, and Lisa Quoresimo (Ph.D., performance studies, 18) are co-founders of Catalyst.

The COVID-19 pandemic has reminded us that we are part of a living, evolving ecosystem and often at its mercy. Despite all our accomplishments as a species, a virus accidentally unleashed on the world has wrought enormous destruction around the globe, the effects of which we probably will not be able to fully assess for many years. Although we cannot always anticipate the damage an infectious disease will do, our best bet at surviving the fallout is a commitment to science-based policies that fuel the development of better preventative strategies, most importantly vaccines. The same lesson extends to most environmental and public health challenges we face.

To many people, though, a vaccine isnt a biological roadblock to the spread of infectious disease, but a scheme hatched by Big Pharma and their stooges in government to control humanity. Its appropriate to maintain some skepticism of corporations and the governments that regulate them, indeed such critical thinking should be encouraged among consumers. Nevertheless, healthy skepticism and cynicism are not the same, and people must learn to distinguish the two if we are going to make progress in our never-ending battle against infectious disease and other maladies that threaten humanity.

While this sometimes seems like an impossible task to science advocates, the pro-GMO vegan community has illustrated how people with deep ideological commitments can embrace science, specifically crop biotechnology and vaccines, without compromising their personal beliefs.

If you want to convince someone to change their mind on a controversial issue, dont attack their worldview, which all but guarantees they will dismiss your arguments as a threat to their identity. This is a lesson Vegan GMO, a small community founded by friends with a passion for animal welfare, has taken to heart. Rather than attack the ideology of their target audience, the group uses their shared beliefs to encourage acceptance of crop biotechnology and vaccines in the broader vegan community.

Vegans sometimes oppose biotechnology because a particular application of the technology may be tested on animals or developed using animal products. This categorizes animals as property to be used for human benefit rather than sentient, living beingsan outlook many vegans find abhorrent.

But vegans do not just make animal-welfare arguments, they often rely on anti-GMO misinformation, like the long-debunked link between consuming GM crops and developing liver and kidney problems. Popular veganism proponents such as retired activist Gary Yourofsky have also latched onto playing God arguments based on the assumption that natural food is better food. God made a tomato perfectly when he created it. Leave it at that, he argued during a 2015 interview. Stop altering tomatoes, stop altering everything on this planet. Its fine the way it was created.

Jayson Merkley, a pro-GMO vegan and fellow at Cornell Universitys Alliance for Science, says the answer to this sort of rhetoric is simple: stop testing GM crops on animals, which is sometimes required before a new product can enter the food supply. Biotech fit for the Red Planet – Newswise

Newswise NASA, in collaboration with other leading space agencies, aims to send its first human missions to Mars in the early 2030s, while companies like SpaceX may do so even earlier. Astronauts on Mars will need oxygen, water, food, and other consumables. These will need to be sourced from Mars, because importing them from Earth would be impractical in the long term. InFrontiers in Microbiology, scientists show for the first time that Anabaena cyanobacteria can be grown with only local gases, water, and other nutrients and at low pressure. This makes it much easier to develop sustainable biological life support systems.

"Here we show that cyanobacteria can use gases available in the Martian atmosphere, at a low total pressure, as their source of carbon and nitrogen. Under these conditions, cyanobacteria kept their ability to grow in water containing only Mars-like dust and could still be used for feeding other microbes. This could help make long-term missions to Mars sustainable," says lead author Dr Cyprien Verseux, an astrobiologist who heads the Laboratory of Applied Space Microbiology at the Center of Applied Space Technology and Microgravity (ZARM) of the University of Bremen, Germany.

Low-pressure atmosphere

Cyanobacteria have long been targeted as candidates to drive biological life support on space missions, as all species produce oxygen through photosynthesis while some can fix atmospheric nitrogen into nutrients. A difficulty is that they cannot grow directly in the Martian atmosphere, where the total pressure is less than 1% of Earth's - 6 to 11 hPa, too low for the presence of liquid water - while the partial pressure of nitrogen gas - 0.2 to 0.3 hPa - is too low for their metabolism. But recreating an Earth-like atmosphere would be expensive: gases would need to be imported, while the culture system would need to be robust - hence, heavy to freight - to resist the pressure differences: "Think of a pressure cooker," Verseux says. So the researchers looked for a middle ground: an atmosphere close to Mars's which allows the cyanobacteria to grow well.

To find suitable atmospheric conditions, Verseux et al. developed a bioreactor called Atmos (for "Atmosphere Tester for Mars-bound Organic Systems"), in which cyanobacteria can be grown in artificial atmospheres at low pressure. Any input must come from the Red Planet itself: apart from nitrogen and carbon dioxide, gases abundant in the Martian atmosphere, and water which could be mined from ice, nutrients should come from "regolith", the dust covering Earth-like planets and moons. Martian regolith has been shown to be rich in nutrients such as phosphorus, sulphur, and calcium.

Anabaena: versatile cyanobacteria grown on Mars-like dust

Atmos has nine 1 L vessels made of glass and steel, each of which is sterile, heated, pressure-controlled, and digitally monitored, while the cultures inside are continuously stirred. The authors chose a strain of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria called Anabaena sp. PCC 7938, because preliminary tests showed that it would be particularly good at using Martian resources and helping to grow other organisms. Closely related species have been shown to be edible, suitable for genetic engineering, and able to form specialized dormant cells to survive harsh conditions.

Verseux and his colleagues first grew Anabaena for 10 days under a mixture of 96% nitrogen and 4% carbon dioxide at a pressure of 100 hPa - ten times lower than on Earth. The cyanobacteria grew as well as under ambient air. Then they tested the combination of the modified atmosphere with regolith. Because no regolith has ever been brought from Mars, they used a substrate developed by the University of Central Florida (called "Mars Global Simulant") instead to create a growth medium. As controls, Anabaena were grown in standard medium, either at ambient air or under the same low-pressure artificial atmosphere.

The cyanobacteria grew well under all conditions, including in regolith under the nitrogen- and carbon dioxide-rich mixture at low pressure. As expected, they grew faster on standard medium optimized for cyanobacteria than on Mars Global Simulant, under either atmosphere. But this is still a major success: while standard medium would need to be imported from Earth, regolith is ubiquitous on Mars. "We want to use as nutrients resources available on Mars, and only those," says Verseux.

Dried Anabaena biomass was ground, suspended in sterile water, filtered, and successfully used as a substrate for growing of E. coli bacteria, proving that sugars, amino acids, and other nutrients can be extracted from them to feed other bacteria, which are less hardy but tried-and-tested tools for biotechnology. For example, E. coli could be engineered more easily than Anabaena to produce some food products and medicines on Mars that Anabaena cannot.

The researchers conclude that nitrogen-fixing, oxygen-producing cyanobacteria can be efficiently grown on Mars at low pressure under controlled conditions, with exclusively local ingredients.

Further refinements in the pipeline

These results are an important advance. But the authors caution that further studies are necessary: "We want to go from this proof-of-concept to a system that can be used on Mars efficiently," Verseux says. They suggest fine-tuning the combination of pressure, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen optimal for growth, while testing other genera of cyanobacteria, perhaps genetically tailored for space missions. A cultivation system for Mars also needs to be designed:

"Our bioreactor, Atmos, is not the cultivation system we would use on Mars: it is meant to test, on Earth, the conditions we would provide there. But our results will help guide the design of a Martian cultivation system. For example, the lower pressure means that we can develop a more lightweight structure that is more easily freighted, as it won't have to withstand great differences between inside and outside," concludes Verseux.

I have to admit Ive heard of nanotechnology but couldnt define it if asked. In short, its the ability to manipulate and build things on the scale of atoms and moleculeswhen you do this, interesting new physics can appear. If youre wondering how small a nanometer is, there are 25.4 million nanometers in one inch. If youre wondering how nanotechnology applies to you, scientists are using it to make materials and devices lighter, stronger, more reactive, more durable, and of course smaller.

One of those scientists is Baratunde Cola, Ph.D. As founder and CEO of Carbice Corporation, there isnt much his ingenuity wont impact, including the phone you are likely reading this story on. I had a chance to get his thoughts on nanotechnology, time management, rethinking diversity, how Georgia supports entrepreneurs, and how a common thread in his professional and personal life, has been heat. Yes, heat.

Chaka Booker: What does Carbice do?

Baratunde Cola: Every electronic device produces heat as a byproduct and that makes them more expensive, not last as long, and less functional. There aren't many good heat conducting materials in the world. It's hard to have something that gets the heat out and is cost effective during manufacturing. We solve that problem. With nanotechnology we help electronic device packagers make things that perform really well. From satellite radio to coffee makers to cloud computing. We give people the highest capability to dissipate heat and manage thermals at the lowest product costs.

Booker: How is nanotechnology shaping the future?

Cola: Like the silicon chip, without which we wouldnt have the internet or CPUsnanotechnology is the next evolution. It's the ability to put atoms where we want them. Before you took atoms where they were, and you used them. Now we can design them from the bottom up and create new physics. What that means, practically, is that nanotechnology will do for this century what silicon architecture did for the last century, which is huge.

Booker: How should entrepreneurs think about that future?

Cola: Keep an eye on hardware. We've gone through decades of software focus, but hardware enables the software to do more. Hardware is materials. The new competitive advantage is going to be materials. That's where nanotechnology comes in. It's going to disrupt what you can do with materials. It's going to disrupt things like AI, computing, big dataall of that is driven on new hardware.

Booker: Your company recently closed a $15 million series A funding round. What did you learn from that process that would help other entrepreneurs?

Cola: In a nutshell, trust yourself and stay authentic. Despite adversity, despite things making you feel you need to change. When fundraising, find people that appreciate you for who you are. Investors will invest in whatever they want. You can either conform to what other people tell you or you can focus on finding people that like what you like. That can be harder because sometimes they're hidden. Especially in materials because they take a long time, and the sales process can be difficult and long. So, I had to find people that really like investing in the same thing Im interested in.

Booker: Sounds like trial and error and persistence.

Cola: You have to talk to people you think are the right fitand then you're going to be wrong. Those lessons take you to the next person. And the next. And you're probably still not a fit there. Every time, it's listening to what they understood, misunderstood, and adjusting for the next conversation.

Booker: What have been sources of support along the way?

Cola: To build a company, you must build a community around you. I came to Georgia because of things like the Georgia Research Alliance, the Advanced Technology Development Center, and the Georgia Centers of Innovation. Resources like that connected us to what we need to de-risk important parts of our business. For example, you can make these materials all you want, but the EPA regulates nanotechnology. The Centers of Innovation, which is a division of the Georgia Department of Economic Development, helped us get through the EPA qualifications and certifications. This whole Georgia ecosystem has wrapped us in a big hug.

Booker: Whats been most helpful about this community?

Cola: There is so much in terms of human resources, connections to information, access to non-dilutive funding in collaboration with Georgia Tech, which allowed us to get EPA certification. Our business is to help our customers solve their hard thermal challenges and realize their product goals. That is where we want to spend our primary resources. The Centers of Innovation allowed us to stay focused and meet a critical business need.

Booker: You are a CEO, professor, faculty athletics representative, father, board member. What tips do you have for managing time?

Cola: This might not be something people want to hearbut you have to start practicing doing a lot of things early in your life. By now I'm pretty good at compartmentalizing my focus and spending a hard 30 minutes doing something, taking a break and spending a hard 30 minutes doing something else. But theres also the reality that my wife's upset with me as we speak because I came home late and the kids are late for an appointment now. Time management will never be perfect and that is okay.

Booker: Two other facets have influenced you. You're a Black man and a former athlete. How have those elements shaped you as a scientist and as an entrepreneur?

Cola: I grew up in Pensacola with a father from the Bronx and Ive seen and experienced a lot of stuff. As an entrepreneur, there's not much that can rattle me. That comes from what I've experienced through sports and some hard times. I'm very grateful for everything. People can say things to me in an investor pitch that would make someone else cry. But I'm just going to take notes the whole time and come back better. The other thing is creativity. People don't think about athletes that way, but to be a top performer, you learn how to deal with a broken play and still drive a great outcome. Those aspects of my life are competitive advantages. I'm very appreciative of my personal story and background because its given me exactly what I need to be successful as an entrepreneur.

Booker: Along the way, youve built a very diverse company. How did you accomplish that?

Cola: I don't really focus on building a diverse team. I think about it differently. You have to unpack the root cause of things.I'm a scientist, so I try to get down to the singular thing that drives the issue. The challenge in America is not diversity. The challenge is the legacy of Black slavery and the lasting economic impacts. Diversity and a lot of issues derive from that. To solve problems, you have to isolate it down to that. The problem of diversity in corporate America is the problem of exclusion of excellence. So, I focus on building the most excellent team from the things and people I have access to. Since, from my personal experiences, I don't have an exclusionary network or mindset, what comes to me is organic. My CTO comes to me organically and he happens to be African American. A gut check for anyone that wants to build a diverse organization is to ask themselves what about them is creating an exclusionary environment? Who's in your circle? How can you expand yourself? How curious are you about other people and cultures? You want your circle so wide that you're able to tap the excellence out of everything.

Booker: How do you get to that point?

Cola: It requires an open mind. What type of books do you read? Who do you take advice from? What movies do you watch? In the business environment, you have to understand you're never going to find the perfect person. Instead, you want to build a culture that brings the best out of the people you bring in. I've been able to focus on culture and that pulls in the type of people I need to do the things they do. And that drove diversity.

Booker: What advice do you have for other entrepreneurs of color?

Cola: Embrace your history. Don't hide from Black slavery. Don't hide from Jim Crow. Make that story a powerful story because it is a powerful story. It is one of resilience. I think you have to almost create a superhero narrative in your mind. Figure out how to take everything in your story and make it a positive you can leverage. I had a football coach and every day of practice he would say, Pray for heat. Pray for heat. Because you get stronger in the heat. Take the heat of history and turn it to a positive. It is easy to say that but hard to live it, because of the emotions. When you feel those emotions, use them too. When I was feeling that way recently, I took my family to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery. I told my children what I am telling you. Take that history and turn it from anger or shame, into power. That is the key.

What CIOs need to know about adding AI to their processes – TechRepublic

AI can help many types of businesses get more from their data. In 2021, one expert believes adoption of AI will take leaps forward.

TechRepublic's Karen Roby spoke with Ira Cohen, chief data scientist with Anodot, about the tools CIOs need to implement artificial intelligence (AI) at their companies. The following is an edited transcript of their conversation.

Karen Roby: As we're heading into 2021, CIOs need to have a checklist of some things to keep in mind when making decisions for this coming year, whether that be about hiring or projects to consider. Let's start with the talent that's needed at companies now, to pull off some of these AI projects. What do you think CIOs need to keep in mind?

Ira Cohen: As you said, 2020 was really special in all this disruption to so many businesses. And AI, actually, is now becoming even more important. The projects that maybe people talked about before have been accelerated now because the speed of movement to new paradigms, that has to be much faster. If you're talking about, for example, commerce, supply chains, need to move much faster. A lot of different projects that maybe before were slowly moving towards more e-commerce, and more shipment. I mean, you're getting your Amazon, but now, so many companies are sending what they're selling out, that you have to have a lot more automation and be a lot more mindful of the data, and be a lot more reactive to how things change constantly. Things are changing much faster, and AI is the perfect thing to manage all of that, if we talk about AI in a very, very global sense, because it has a capability of processing data very fast, giving you insights very fast of very high volumes of data, which is what's happening now, but that's what's needed.

What do you need to actually have in your company in order to actually be able to achieve these goals of these projects? The first order of business, and this is something that people and companies have been doing in the last few years is, put all your data together. Create these data lakes. Data lakes have been very popular, and growing at companies like Snowflake, and other types of companies that have grown tremendously in the last few years, because that's what they offer. But, now, to leverage those data lakes, you need data engineers that know how to pull data quickly out of them, and serve them to the data science team that can actually transform them with algorithms into meaningful insights.

Data engineers is something that is going to be required a lot more in the next year or so, because without those data pipelines, laying of data pipelines that will feed all these AI algorithms and projects, there is nothing. The AI doesn't work without data, at least the AI that we have today. And then comes the machine learning engineers. Today, data science has been something that has grown in the last few years. The data scientists are the ones that are developing the AI required for all these projects. But data scientists, a lot of what was hired was basically people that do analysis. They do kind of one-off projects.

And, now, because these things are starting to be more and more automated, you don't need just a data scientist who knows how to do a project well, and prototype something, but you need the engineers that will make it into products, even if they're internal products. It's not a project anymore, it's internal products that have to constantly work for the company to deliver the rate that they need to deliver. These two areas, the data engineers, and the machine learning engineers, and not just the scientist, these are probably the areas where we need to ... I believe, CIOs need to invest most in their companies.

Karen Roby: When you consider the talent pool, Ira, how much are we talking about here, as far as supply and demand, when it comes to these more specialized areas with AI and machine learning? I mean, do we have the talent to fill the positions that we're going to need?

Ira Cohen: No. I think there's still a big gap, but what's happening in the market, in general, is that the whole field of AI or machine learning is being democratized by all sorts of tools that are either being wrapped into loose products, or open source completely, either from Google, or from Facebook, from companies that are actually invested a lot in developing the, let's say, the foundations that you would need. And then, the talent pool that needs to use it, they don't have to know as deeply, they don't have to have the knowledge as deeply as the people who developed all these tools. So, there is hope of getting a lot more talent into the area without the need for them to get Ph.Ds, in order to be able to do this. And that is happening in parallel.

With good education, with good courses, you can actually get junior machine learning engineers that can start bringing value. Where the gap is, is in the more senior ones, the ones that do have experience, because you can't hire just junior people. They won't have a clue what to do. You do need some sense of the field. The gap is in the machine learning engineers that are kind of, I would say, the mid-tier, and the experts, of course, that will always be a gap. But, the mid-tier that can teach the juniors how to work, that's where most of the gap is today, I believe.

Karen Roby: There's no question that AI has been fast-tracked for many companies that may not have even been considering moving in that direction yet, until their digital transformation plans were really put on fast-forward as well, from March 2020. Is there any particular industry you're really seeing where it's being embraced even more?

Ira Cohen: We're seeing it in all sorts of commerce, where even if it was half brick-and-mortar, half online, now, this has pushed them quite significantly. Supply chains and deliveries are definitely a big push in those types of companies. And, telcos, we've also seen in telcos that very big push towards AI, and it's driven by two things that happen now in parallel. One is the virus, right? The whole pandemic, which actually put a lot more pressure on networks, and made them even more important, and actually brought some of the telcos to ... Basically, that provide all the foundations for our communications, brought them to the front, and center.

5G, is the second one that's happening in parallel. So, 5G, changing, coming to play, creating a lot more data, a lot more complexities in the networks, is also pushing them to implement AI, to actually being able to manage all that complex infrastructure, which is becoming even more complex, and even more critical.

Karen Roby: When you look to say, nine months to a year from now, how do you see AI playing a role, even versus now? And, again, how is that going to change things overall for businesses, from small businesses to huge enterprise companies?

Ira Cohen: I think small businesses will leverage AI for particular tasks, small tasks, and probably, the adoption there will be less, because AI, at the end of the day, is fueled by data. And if you don't have a lot of data, you can make your own decisions fairly quickly anyway. But, for larger companies, the ones that do not embrace it, and do not start using it heavily to make better decisions, to forecast the future, they'll be left behind, because they are not going to benefit from the improved, either margins, by being more efficient, or improve the ability to sell more, because of what those tools will give them, they will start losing out.

There's definitely a race for them to actually do this, tools to embrace it quickly. For the small businesses, I think it will be slower to embrace, unless it's for very particular tasks that before, they could not do, because they could not hire the people to do it. But, now, they'll get the tool that already does it for a small fraction of that price that would be if they had to develop it themselves, and then they can run away with it.

I mean, even looking at just simple e-commerce sites, right? You're trying to sell something, and you want to have a recommendation engine, like Amazon has a recommendation engine on its website, which does improve how much you're selling. Today, a small website, or as a small seller, cannot develop it themselves. It's too expensive. But with it becoming available as a service from companies, they can actually start using it for a fraction of the price, and get the benefit of it even for themselves. For recruiting tools, it will give them a benefit. They'll probably want to buy it rather than trying to develop it themselves.

Cloud-stored data is suddenly encrypted, followed by a note asking for ransom or threatening public embarrassment. Corporate email addresses become conduits for malicious malware and links. An organizations core business platform abruptly goes offline, disrupting vital communications and services for hours.

Weve learned to recognize the familiar signs of a cyberattack, thanks to the growing array of well-publicized incidents when threat actors from nation-states or criminal enterprises breach our digital networks. Artificial Intelligenceis changing this picture.

With AI, organizations can program machines to perform tasks that would normally require human intelligence. Examples include self-driving trucks, computer programs that develop drug therapies, and software that writes news articles and composes music. Machine learning (ML) is an application of AI that uses algorithms to teach computers to learn and adapt to new data.

AI and ML represent a revolutionary new way of harnessing technology and an unprecedented opportunity for threat actors to sow even more disruption.

What do these emerging adversarial AI/ML threats look like? How can we take the appropriate measures to protect ourselves, our data, and society as a whole?

Step one in cybersecurity is to think like the enemy. What could you do as a threat actor with adversarial AI/ML? The possibilities are many, with the potential impact extending beyond cyberspace:

You could manipulate what a device is trained to see for instance, corrupting training imagery so that a driving robot interprets a stop sign as 55 mph. Because intelligent machines lack the ability to understand context, the driving robot in this case would just keep driving over obstacles or into a brick wall if these things stood in its way. Closer to home, an adversarial AI/ML attack can fool your computers anti-virus software into allowing malware to run.

You could manipulate what humans see, like a phone number that looks like its from your area code. Deepfakes are a sophisticated and frightening example of this. Manufactured videos of politicians and celebrities, nearly indistinguishable from the real thing, have been shared over social media among millions of people before being identified as fake.

Furthermore, you can manipulate what an AI application does, like Twitter users did with Microsofts AI chatbot Tay. In less than a day, they trained the chatbot to spew misogynistic and racist remarks.

Once a machine learning application is live, you can tamper with its algorithms for instance, directing an application for automated email responses to instead spit out sensitive information like credit card numbers. If youre with a cybercriminal organization, this is valuable data ripe for exploitation.

You could even alter the course of geopolitical events. Retaliation for cyberattacks has already been moving into the physical world, as we saw with the 2016 hacking of Ukraines power grid. Adversarial AI ups the ante.

Fortunately, as adversarial AL/ML tactics evolve, so are cybersecurity measures against them. One tactic is training an algorithm to think more like a human. AI research and deployment companyOpen AI suggests explicitly training algorithms against adversarial attacks, training multiple defense models, and training AI models to output probabilities rather than hard decisions, which makes it more difficult for an adversary to exploit the model.

Training can also be used in threat detection for example, training computers to detect deepfake videos by feeding them examples of deepfakes compared with real videos.

IT teams can also achieve an ounce of prevention through baking security into their AI/ML applications from the beginning. When building models, keep in mind how adversaries may try to cause damage. A variety of resources, likeIBMs Adversarial Robustness Toolbox, have emerged to help IT teams evaluate ML models and create more robust and secure AI applications.

Where should organizations start their efforts? Identify the easiest attack vector and try to bake it directly into your AI/ML pipeline. By tackling concrete problems with bespoke solutions, you can mitigate threats in the short term while building the understanding and depth needed to track long-term solutions.

Fortunately, AI is part of the cybersecurity solution as well, powering complex models for detecting malicious behavior, sophisticated threats, and evolving trends and conducting this analysis far faster than any team of humans could.
