Retribution Arrive on Smackdown, Vandalize Ring in Hoodies and Masks – Bleeding Cool News

WWE's new anarchist stable Retribution arrived on WWE Smackdown on Friday. After being seen torching a generator on Monday Night Raw earlier this week, Retribution hit the ring at the end of Smackdown on Friday, terrorizing the NXT trainees paid to sit in the crowd and committing acts of vandalism.

The group, which consisted of a half dozen or more men and women wearing black pants, black hoodies, and black masks, brought bats and steel pipes with them to the ring with a little more than five minutes left before Smackdown went off the air. Retribution attempted to attack the commentary team, but unfortunately, Michael Cole and Corey Graves got away. The group then attacked "fans" in the crowd with bats and pipes. Then they returned to the ring.

After shouting things like "this is our house now" and "who's in charge now," the group chased off some camera people and then broke out cans of red spray paint, which they used to vandalize the ringside area. One of them spraypainted the WWE logo with a big circle around it and a line through the logo on the plexiglass ring barrier. They also spraypainted the ring apron and the ring itself and tipped over the announce table. For the grand finale, one member of Retribution pulled out a chainsaw and cut down the ring ropes.

We first learned about the plans for Retribution to debut on Monday, with Ryan Satin, a wrestling journalist who has been employed by WWE in the past, first reporting on the "leaked" story. Satin repeatedly insisted that the faction was "not political," including in a follow-up article after the Raw segment later that night. That's clearly a message WWE wants to get out since the group bears a strong resemblance to conservative media bugaboo Antifa. Since everything the group is doing appears to be a wrestlingized version of what's been happening over the past few months in protests across the country, as filtered through the mind of WWE's 74-year-old CEO Vince McMahon, the company believes that by repeatedly stating that the faction is "not political" the company can plausibly deny making light of social causes while still building buzz for an edgy storyline. Whether it will work remains to be seen.

A prophecy says that in the comic book industry's darkest days, a hero will come to lead the people through a plague of overpriced floppies, incentive variant covers, #1 issue reboots, and super-mega-crossover events.

Scourge of Rich Johnston, maker of puns, and seeker of the Snyder Cut, Jude Terror, sadly, is not the hero comics needs right now... but he's the one the industry deserves.

Doxxieland: Unmasking the Racist Resistance – Bayou Brief

At the first Save America rally, held on the Fourth of July outside of the Louisiana Governors Mansion in Baton Rouge, environmental investigative journalist Julie Dermansky captured this photo of one of only two people who wore face masks. The unidentified man told Dermansky that his mask was a way of protesting against Dixie Beer, which recently announced plans to drop the name Dixie from its brand. (Also note the novelty USS Robert E. Lee baseball cap, which are sold online by print-on-demand vendors. The USS Robert E. Lee was decommissioned nearly 40 years ago). Photo by Julie Dermansky.

Even though hes just a week shy of his 57th birthday, Jeff Crouerethe pugnacious New Orleans area conservative talk radio host, TV pundit, and columniststill looks like someone who occasionally gets the question Can I see some ID? by no-nonsense bartenders and by-the-book convenience store cashiers.

His style is probably best described as Young Republican. He seems most comfortable in a polo and khakis or a suit, which he wears whenever hes on the air, even when its just a taping of He Said, She Said, the weekly radio show he co-hosts with his new girlfriend, Miriam Mimi Owens, the race-baiting provocateur who is perhaps best known locally for creating Robert E. Lee-themed Mardi Gras throws, which earned her a lifetime ban from the Krewe of Freret.

Recently, Crouere and Owens announced that they will be hosting their second Save America rally in Jefferson Parish on August 14. Around 200 people attended their first rally, which took place outside of the Governors Mansion in Baton Rouge on the Fourth of July, right as Louisiana began to confront a sudden surge in COVID-19 cases.

The event included Tony Spell, the breakaway Pentecostal preacher whose defiance of the stay-at-home order earlier in the year encouraged over 1,000 members of his church to undermine the public health, providing Spell with his 15 minutes of fame and a warrant for his arrest.

Are you a masker or a free breather? he roared at the rally, though he already knew the answer.

After I asked Crouere and Owens if theyd be willing to respond to a few questions, they were happy to help. Three weeks ago, we spoke for nearly an hour through FaceTime. At some point, I asked whether to expect the opposition to face masks to be a theme in upcoming rallies.

Our event was not about masks, Crouere told me. That was not really the focus of our rallies, and that really wont be the focus of our upcoming rallies.

But well follow the law, Owens interjected. I dont like it. I cant breathe. Im hot as heck in it. But were lawful people, so if we have to wear it, well wear it.

While their first event may not have been intended to focus on opposition to mask mandates, that message clearly wasnt received by those in attendance.

Out of the less than 200 rally-goers, I saw only two people with face masks, reported environmental investigative journalist and photographer Julie Dermansky on Desmog. One was worn by a man that had the words Dixie Beer painted on it, which was expressing his disdain over the decision by the owner of the New Orleans beer company to change the beers name in response to anti-racism demonstrations. The other mask I noticed at the rally was worn on a womans arm.

According to Crouere, he and Owens decided to organize Save America rallies for four different reasons. Its about a response to attacks on police, he explained. Its a response to the fact that our historic monuments are being taken down. Its a response to a shutdown of the economy, and its a response to what a lot of people see as a leftward movement in the political world.

Two weeks after their Fourth of July rally, Owens encouraged her friends and followers on Facebook to attend the Take Our Country Back Rally (Say No to the Mask) near the Lakeside Mall in Metairie, noting the event is not organized by Jeff or I (sic). It is organized by Clay Taylor. He has filed suit about the mask mandate. All are welcome.

Crouere told me that he was in attendance but reemphasized that neither he nor Owens had been involved in its planning.

When I decided to write about the purpose and the ultimate aims of their rallies, I had assumed the story would be about the political opposition to restrictions aimed at curtailing the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but while that certainly is a part of the story, as I quickly came to understand, it should not be confused with what appears to be driving their activism: Anger over the effort to remove monuments that celebrate Confederate leaders and the Lost Cause of white supremacy.

Nearly a year after Donald Trump took office, Jeff Crouere continued to question whether former President Obama was born in the United States, peddling an article by the bigoted conspiracist Jerome Corsi on Alex Jones fringe propaganda website InfoWars. Corsi claimed the CIA hacked into Hawaiis database to manufacture Barack Obamas long-form birth certificate.

Ive said from the beginning that the birth certificate (Obama) released was a fraud, said Crouere, who also told listeners that he thought the whole thing about (Obama) being Christian was a masquerade as well.

Yet, despite promoting a debunked conspiracy theory even after President Trump himself gave up on the cause, Jeff Crouere has usually been able to present himself as someone who straddles between the far-right fringe and the more respectable Republican establishment. In addition to the weekly program with Owens, Crouere also hosts a daily morning show, Ringside Politics, as well as a bimonthly show in front of a live audience called Politics with a Punch, which describes itself as a local version of comedian Bill Mahers former show Politically Incorrect.

He is helped, in part, by the fact that he broadcasts on one of the smallest stations in the New Orleans area, WGSO, which means youre unlikely to hear his most incendiary commentary unless youre a loyal listener who lives nearby or if you decide to download an app to listen online (albeit small, Crouere actually does command a national audience online).

Crouere also benefitted from his brief marriage to Simone Bruni, a well-respected entrepreneur who became a local celebrity and a self-made multimillionaire after launching the demolition company Demo Diva in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. A year before they married, Bruni threw him a lavish party for his 50th birthday, which managed to earn coverage in The Times-Picayune.

According to a friend of Bruni, their divorce was nasty, and among those in the country club crowd of suburban Jefferson Parish, rumors of a high-priced alimony agreement for Crouere were widespread.

Regardless, it seems more than a little ironic that a man who once raged with indignation against former Mayor Mitch Landrieu for ordering the removal of Lost Cause monuments in New Orleans had been married to a woman who made a fortune tearing things down. Perhaps the two were never a good match.

However, the same cannot be said about his co-host and girlfriend Mimi Owens, the Cleopatra to his Marc Antony, the Bonnie to his Clyde.

The Save America Rallies began as a Facebook group, which the couple created to recruit and organize for a grand event. The group purported to be about saving our heritage, culture, security, and prosperity.

In little over a week, it mustered well over 3,000 members, a menagerie of militant conservatives, fringe conspiracists, and more than a few white supremacists, which proved to generate the wrong kind of attention and complicated their plans.

Because of impending threats, which happens, thats part of the silencing, Owens told WWLTV. Were not going to announce a location or time until next week.

But the aura of mystery and the vague idea of fighting back only encouraged their racist flock to air their grievances. Next theyll want to get rid of white people because it upsets them from slavery days, when not one these assholes was ever a slave, wrote a member named Deborah. Theyre too damn lazy. Thats why theyre on welfare.

Comments like Deborahs not only avoided scrutiny from Owens, the groups moderator, they were usually left unchallenged by everyone else as well.

Indeed, nearly every post in the group was one of outrage: videos of riots, looting, and violence, memes mocking George Floyds murder, and Deep State conspiracy theories. On the rare occasion in which the group was infiltrated by someone expressing any opinion that resembled disagreement, then, like a swarm of racist bees, the drones honed in, and the double-agents were quickly outed.

Often, contrarians were shouted down with accusations of antifa, the anti-racist, anti-fascist, far-left political movement that has emerged as the principal boogeyman of President Trump and his supporters on the fringe right.

A dutiful and vigilant overseer, Owens was attentive to questions from her legion and responded with swift action whenever so-callled antifa dissidents made an appearance. On a post celebrating Trumps executive order protecting monuments, a member named Devin simply replied, Unconstitutional.

Antifa alert, a woman named Susan warned the group. Devin is antifa, she asserted, attaching a screenshot of Devins comment as evidence.

Owens responded to Susans alarm in less than twenty minutes and gave Devin the boot. Hes been removed.

Owens is no stranger to the racist sewers of social media. In addition to her role with the Save America Rallies group, she is also an admin of Forever Lee Circle, a Facebook page with more than 14,000 followers, ostensibly created to focus on fighting the removal of Confederate general Robert E. Lees statue in the city.

Many slave owners, Jefferson and Lee for example, opted to keep their slaves to prevent them from being mistreated by others who might try an [sic] re-enslave them, she once wrote in a post that is as appalling as it is factually incorrect. The group itself has proposed that the real perpetrators of American slavery were the Jews, the Muslims, and Africans themselves.

Before she launched a career in talk radio, Mimi Owens wrote a pair of self-published childrens books, including one titled Whos That, Daddy? meant to educate children about various monuments in New Orleans, including those of Confederate soldiers and perpetrators of genocide. (Her other book includes a similar cast of characters but is set in Richmond, Virginia).

In a stilted, simple rhyme scheme, the book, which is illustrated by Sean Gautreaux, tells the story of a white father driving his son around the city to explain the significance of the monuments they see.

Although it is not included in the book, there is one illustration that Owens appears to be particularly fond of and arguably best represents her approach in curating history. She uses it as the banner image for her Forever Lee Circle Facebook page. Its of a father and a son stumbling into a Mardi Gras parade, where they find three heroes of the ConfederacyJefferson Davis, P.G.T. Beauregard, and Robert E. Leetossing Owens Forever Lee Circle throws while standing atop a float thats being hauled by a Black man in a tractor.

To be sure, both she and Crouere vehemently reject the notion that either of them are racist, claiming that they are animated instead by a patriotic love for their country and the Constitution and concerns about erasing history, which is ironic considering the ways in which both of them routinely distort, exaggerate, and flat-out lie about the history behind these monuments and the reasons people want them taken down.

I am actually on the Southern Poverty Laws hate-watch, Owens boasted at the first Save America rally, as if the designation is a badge of honor. (As it turns out, this too was an exaggeration. Owens was referring to this article about her Lee Circle Mardi Gras throws, which referred to her by one of her pseudonyms, Mikas Earl.)

But thats not to say that the couple havent faced backlash for their views and their cause clbre. Since they announced their plans for their first Save America rally, they claim they were both been inundated with phone calls, social media posts, emails, and letters from people accusing them of racism.

Some of those people, according to Owens, called themselves members of antifa, referring to the anti-fascist, anti-racist, far-left political movement, and following their first rally, she would allege that among the crowd there were five antifa counter-protestors, dressed in black uniforms.

When Owens posted a photograph on the rallys private Facebook group page of the five suspects, all of whom appeared to be either in their late teens or early twenties, languishing a few hundred feet from the event, one of them wrote Owens back. They were not, as it turns out, antifa. The comment was quickly scrubbed from the page, presumably by an administrator.

And then the doxxing began, bemoaned Owens.

After receiving an innocuous Black Lives Matter flyer and phone calls to both Owens and her ex-husbands phones from people allegedly claiming to be antifa, the couple say they felt concerned enough to contact local law enforcement as well as the FBI.

They were boasting about doing it so we had to take action, Crouere said. I mean all of this is disturbing beyond belief.

That phone call was the scariest one of all, Owens said. This is antifa looking for Mimi Owens. To me, thats a threat. So frightened, in fact, that she went on to taunt the caller online.

****

To people like Jeff Crouere and Mimi Owens, taking down monuments to racist or genocidal men is merely a political stunt, a way for white politicians like Mitch Landrieu to erase history while ingratiating themselves among the Black community.

Its a feel-good action that does nothing, said Crouere. Now we see since the George Floyd incident, I think literally 100 monuments have been taken down across the country. I just think thats very sad.

Owens, who calls herself a historic preservationist, expressed her disdain as well. They have no problem putting Black Lives Matter on the street, she said. But you cant put something for your culture. Arent we a country of immigrants? But the only immigrants that matter are the ones that were forced here.

The couple believe that prominent public monuments to figures such as John McDonogh, Andrew Jackson, and Robert E. Lee should remain standing, regardless of the messages those monuments communicate to Black and indigenous Americans, as they each, in their view, contain some sort of ambiguous lesson in history.

You know, we all have our stories. Im part Irish, what about all the Irish that were considered slaves? Crouere mused when we spoke. Weve got to remember that a lot of people have ancestors who went through a lot of pain and were enslaved. I think the Irish slavery lasted 200 years.

The trope about Irish slavery is a widely-discredited, specious argument that traces its origin in the recent discourse of white supremacy.

But this is how both of them frame the discussion. In their version of the story, they are the real victims here, and their online army of supporters have been unfairly maligned simply because they believe in defending American history.

****

Societal pressures have, for the most part, succeeded in driving the bulk of the loud-and-proud, heritage-not-hate, traitorous flag-waving racist neo-revolutionaries into the underbellies of neighborhood bars, Thanksgiving dinners, and online communities. The more careful and prudent among them stick to places of true anonymity, such as the forums of 9gag or 4chan. But the loss of strongholds like r/The_Donald show that they continue to lose a war of attrition.

Those who have remained onlinethese tech-savvy, young, involuntarily celibate partisanswill likely continue to disrupt supply lines of discussion with their memes and single-sentence debates. Youll find them mocking trans rights or liberal absurdities, or claiming to OWN libtard snowflakes with FACTS and LOGIC.Having been banished to the backseat, they laugh at the speed bumps on the road to progress. But these underground resistance fighters know the internet. They know how to navigate the back channels and remain hidden, striking and retreating like cyber guerrillas.

Such is not the case for the vanguard that is, the boomer and the internet illiterate divisions of the resistance. Theyre out waging war on open and mostly public groups on Facebook. They use their real names. They have profile pictures, some of themselves, some of the president using the flag as a tissue, some as just the flag itself. Though the image can vary from the flag of the United States, a bastardized thin-blue-line version, or the flag of the Confederacy, depending on the season.

They also often list their personal information, including where they work. They dont know any better. Having never encountered hacker culture outside of red pill metaphors from The Matrix, theyre quickly becoming acquainted with a common term and tactic on the online battlefield: Doxxing.

But theyre only getting a taste of the true nature of the practice. Doxxing has been used to stalk and target abortion providers, expose journalists confidential sources, and to identify and punish government dissidents. On the extreme end of the scale, theres swatting, which involves making a false police report of a hostage situation that leads to a raid on an unsuspecting, innocent persons home. In this country, if the police burst through your door and you try to defend yourself from these unannounced intruders, theres a good chance youll be killed. The tragic murder of Breonna Taylor shows that these intruders may not even be held accountable for it. As of this writing, Breonna Taylors murderers have still not been arrested.

These virtual bigots are simply having the things they say and post in a public place or send in direct messages documented. Alerting a business to the vile, unacceptable behavior of one of their employees isnt harassment or targeting. In fact, its beneficial to that business, and to the larger community. Broadcasting the racist beliefs of a business owner or a public figure isnt defamation; its a public service. This is especially true when the people spouting racist opinions are teachers, public officials, pastors, or police officers.

Among their legion of Facebook fans, one in particular stands out: Amanda Jennings (aka Amanda Smith, aka Amanda Hargis, aka Amanda Downhour). Jennings isnt just one of the most prolific commenters in the Save America Rallies group, she is also a regular presence on Mimi Owens personal page.

When I reached out for comment, Jennings, a native of Bastrop, a small town in north Louisiana, told me she was willing to talk if you are willing to risk your life. She then added, I am targeted by these foreign militants that want to destroy our country. A week ago, she claimed that the World Health Organization paid Hollywood actors to claim that they had Covin-19 (sic).

Elaborate, bizarre conspiracies are a part of her brand. So too is virulent white supremacy.

After Heather Heyer was murdered by a white supremacist during the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, Jennings defended the white supremacist, arguing that he was merely fleeing a violent mob. Two weeks later, she posted a photograph of her and Congressman Clay Higgins (R-LA03), whose own associations with fringe anti-government militia groups have been well-documented.

Jennings does not attempt to hide her incendiary beliefs, nor does she shy away from the spotlight.

Last year, she campaigned as a Republican for Louisiana Secretary of State, finishing last and in a distant fourth against incumbent and fellow Republican Kyle Ardoin, but still managing to garner nearly 80,000 votes.

She reported being the only donor to the campaign, spending slightly more than $2,000, which paid for the qualifying fee and campaign swag, which apparently included stickers that misspelled the word candidate and her own last name.

Jennings actively protested the removal of Confederate and white supremacist monuments in New Orleans and, later, in Shreveport as well. In a live-streaming video broadcasted from a counter-protest outside of the Confederate monument in front of the Caddo Parish courthouse, which she shared on the Save America Rallies page, she featured a woman holding a spiked bat. When Jennings asked the woman about the weapon, the woman called it a N***** Beater.

Oh, wow, responded Jennings, before saying to a nearby counter-protester, I hope she dont need to use it.

Jennings is a great example of the casual form of doxxing facing the vanguard. The live-stream she shared on Crouere and Owens group was also posted on her own personal page, which was public and open for all to see.

After a few shares, hundreds flocked to her page to express their outrage on her video. Jennings responded by sending direct messages to some of the Black commenters, saying to one, You fucking n****** getting real bold!!!!! Little black bitch I will hang you. (She later claimed, dubiously, that the comment was photoshopped).

Jeff Crouere and Mimi Owens did not denounce or remove the video or any other of her violent or racist posts until I asked them about it, nearly a month after Jennings posted her video.

Thats not acceptable. Its not acceptable to have any video that has racial slurs in it, said Crouere, who, unlike Owens, also noted that he was unfamiliar with Jennings. Thats against everything that we stand for. That will be removed once we find it.

Some things get past us, Owens asserted. At some of these protests on the other side, theyre saying nasty words too, so what do we do? Do we not show any protests?

The video was removed from the groups page and Amanda Jennings was banned from the Save America Rallies group within minutes of our interview ending.

In response to the public attention, or casual doxxing, that members in the group were receiving, Owens mustered her troops and made an announcement. Heres what is happening all over social media, she wrote. Be smart and pause before you post. In the post, she included screenshots of half a dozen groups called things like Expose Racists+ 2020, Expose Racism 2020, and YOU ABOUT TO LOSE YO JOB!!!! (Racists exposed 2020).

Posts and screenshots from the Save America Rally group had been shared and tagged in groups like these, which caused members of the vanguard to have their employers contacted and their racist memes and opinions, which they thought were shared in a safe space, posted on their profiles for their friends to see.

Ever the gallant leader, Owens chose to warn her soldiers of watchful eyes, rather than admonish them, ban them from the group, or remove their posts for blatantly racist language and imagery. Rather than simply not being racist, they chose to become more cautious of what they posted.

Ive had a show for 21 years, and Ive never had anything like this ever before, Crouere said, while sitting snug on a loveseat next to Owens. Its reaching a level of vitriol that is really unprecedented.

New Dietary Ingredients: Will FDA protect consumers from pirates and piggybackers? – NutraIngredients-usa.com

A new dietary ingredient, defined in the Dietary Supplement Health & Education Act (DSHEA), means a dietary ingredient that was not marketed in the United States before October 15, 1994, when DHSEA was enacted. Weve been waiting so long for FDA to fully implement this provision that perhaps, for the sake of accuracy, we should just be calling them post-DSHEA dietary ingredients rather than new. Twenty-six years is a long time.

The NDI requirements established by DSHEA were intended to give consequence to the dividing line between grandfathered ingredients and ones introduced after the passage of the law. Dietary ingredients already on the market received a presumption of safety, but ingredients introduced after the laws enactment would have to demonstrate they are reasonably expected to be safe.

DSHEA commands that a supplement containing a new dietary ingredient is adulterated unless it was already in the food supply in a form that has not been chemically altered or there is a history of use or other evidence that the ingredient, if used as recommended or suggested in the labeling, will reasonably be expected to be safe. The law further provides that the manufacturer or distributor provide FDA with the basis for concluding that the dietary ingredient will reasonably be expected to be safe in the form of an NDI notification. (21 USC 350b)

Moreover, DSHEA declared that a supplement is adulterated if it contains a new dietary ingredient for which there is inadequate information to provide reasonable assurance that such ingredient does not present a significant or unreasonable risk of illness or injury. (21 USC 342(f)(1)(B)) It commands that introducing a dietary supplement into interstate commerce that is unsafe under the NDI provisions of the law is an expressly prohibited act. Public safety seems intrinsically intertwined with the new dietary ingredient requirements.

Over time, FDA has repeatedly touted the notification requirement associated with the NDI provision as FDA's only opportunity to evaluate the safety of a new dietary ingredient before it becomes available to consumers. The agency has lamented the paucity of NDI notifications it has received over the past 26 years as evidence that consumers may be at risk from un-notified and therefore, potentially unsafe, ingredients.

But FDA seems reluctant to enforce the law against products that ignore the NDI notification requirementenforcement that would create deterrence and provide incentives for companies to file these notifications.

Enforcement of the NDI requirements is likewise the lynchpin of the master file system that FDA proposed in its 2016 draft guidance on NDIs. Master files would allow the filer of an NDI notification to protect its safety dossier and license it to its customers while assuring that competitors marketing their own versions of that ingredient would have to develop their own assurance of safety for the ingredient.

Since then, industry has embraced the concept of master files, not only for the protection of public health, but also for the additional benefit that it rewards the research investment of innovative ingredient developers. Master files would deter pirates who steal that intellectual property, fail to file their own notifications, and undersell the innovator because they dont have to recover the costs of innovation.

Earlier this spring, CRN, along with three other trade associations, presented FDA with a detailed framework for how master files could be implemented. It requires the agency to police NDI notifications, and as DSHEA envisioned, ingredients marketed by piggybackers who fail to file their own notification would be deemed adulterated.

Since 2016, FDA has been silent on this issue. While lamenting the relatively few notifications filed by industry, the agency has not initiated a single enforcement action, not imposed a single import alert, nor recalled a single supplement for lack of an NDI notification. And the industry should worry that lack of action by the FDA signals that the master file concept, along with enforcement of NDIs, is not a priority at the agency.

The problem is that FDA may well view the development of master files, the pirating of ingredients, problem of piggybacking, and the calls for enforcement of NDI requirements as amounting to enlisting FDA to help protect a supplement manufacturers intellectual property. Industrys enthusiasm that master files could provide incentives for research investment in supplements may be dissuading FDA from the public safety aspects. Adjudicating competitive disputes is not something FDA has ever considered high among its priorities, and certainly not for dietary supplements. FDAs mission after all is to protect and promote public health, not to assist companies in their competitive battles.

But this ignores that NDI master files are a matter of public health as much as are FDAs concerns about cannabidiol. Failure to file NDI notifications for new dietary ingredients creates public health gambles for consumers. When a competitor claims to be selling the same ingredient captured in an NDI notification, how does FDA know it is the same ingredient? How does FDA know it is concentrating the same constituents or properly identifying the requisite plant parts? That it is using the same solvents and extraction agents and properly removing them during production? That harmful contaminants have been eliminated? It doesnt. As FDA has repeatedly noted, the NDI notification is FDAs only opportunity to review the safety of new dietary ingredients.

The law leaves no doubt that Congress considered NDIs a matter of public health, not economic protectionism. NDI notifications and master files represent a method to give consumers an assurance of safety in these ingredients. Its time FDA take the safety issues involved with NDIs as seriously as it does the safety issues it raises for CBD.

So while consumers wait for the arrival of CBD supplements, bogged down by FDAs high requirements for safety, the industry also waits for enforcement of NDIs and a similar dedication to protecting consumers of products already on the market. NDIs wont work without enforcement.

Vitamin D supplements are ineffective in reducing risk of depression, large study finds – Southernminn.com

Taking vitamin D supplements does not reduce the risk of depression during middle age or later in life, according to a large study published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

Some previous studies have linked low blood levels of vitamin D sometimes called the sunshine vitamin because the body absorbs the nutrient through exposure to sunlight with a higher risk of late-life depression. For that reason, it was thought that taking vitamin D supplements might serve as a preventive treatment.

No evidence of such an effect was found in the new study, which is one of the largest and longest randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to investigate the topic.

There was no significant benefit from the supplement for this purpose. It did not prevent depression or improve mood, says Dr. Oliva Okereke, the studys lead author and a psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital, in a released statement.

Why the study was done

Preventing late-life depression is a public health priority. The condition is often undertreated in older people. Although vitamin D supplementation has been touted as a possible treatment, prior studies that have suggested its usefulness for that purpose have been primarily observational. Such studies cannot offer definitive answers about a treatments effectiveness, for they show only correlations, not causations. Other factors besides vitamin D ones not addressed in the studies may explain the results.

RCTs, which are considered the gold standard of medical research, offer a much more rigorous (although not perfect) measure of a treatments effectiveness. As background information in the current study points out, 13 RCTs have previously looked at the impact of vitamin D supplements on depression or mood during middle age or later in life. All but one found the supplements had no effect.

Only four of those RCTs, however, had participants take a dose of vitamin D that was 800 IU/day or greater for 12 months or longer. The new study attempts to address those methodological limitations, as well as another one: size.

One scientific issue is that you actually need a very large number of study participants to tell whether or not a treatment is helping to prevent development of depression, explains Okereke. With nearly 20,000 people, our study was statistically powered to address this issue.

Study details

The current study used data collected from 18,353 American men and women who were participating in a larger clinical trial investigating preventive strategies for cardiovascular disease and cancer. All were 50 years or older, and none had clinical signs of the condition when they entered the study.

Half the participants were randomly assigned to receive either 2000 IU of cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) daily, while the other half received a placebo.

The participants were followed for an average of five years, and 90 percent completed the trial. During that time, 609 of those who received the vitamin D and 625 of those who received the placebo developed symptoms of clinical depression a difference that was statistically insignificant. Nor was there any significant difference between the groups in the participants self-reported mood scores during the course of the study.

Interestingly, the study also found no association between low blood levels of vitamin D and a risk of depression or depressive symptoms.

These findings do not support the use of vitamin D3 in adults to prevent depression, Okereke and her colleagues conclude.

Limitations and implications

The study has its own limitations. Most notably, it relied on the participants self-reports about depressive symptoms and mood. Such reports can be unreliable.

Still, the studys findings support those from almost all of the smaller RCTs on this topic. They are also in line with a growing body of other research that has found that taking vitamin D supplements in the hopes of preventing various illnesses (including COVID-19) is unnecessary and, in some cases, dangerous.

The National Academy of Medicine has determined that healthy adults (those without a specific disease related to a vitamin D deficiency) need, on average, 600 international units (IUs) of vitamin D daily until the age of 71, when they need, on average, 800 IUs.

As Ive noted in Second Opinion before, Vitamin D is unique among micronutrients, as its produced in the skin during exposure to sunlight. So although the vitamin can be obtained through food (such as salmon, egg yolks and fortified milk), just five to 30 minutes of sunlight exposure twice a week is usually sufficient to meet most peoples vitamin D needs.

And, yes, that includes people living in Minnesota and other northern latitudes.

Susan Perry writes Second Opinion for MinnPost, covering consumer health.

20 Questions With Ferry Corsten: The Dutch Icon on How Trance ‘Hits You In the Feels Like No Other Genre’ – Billboard

While he's created music under many aliases and as part of myriad side projects -- Moonman, System F, Gouryella, Veracocha and New World Punx among them -- Ferry Corsten remains one of the most consistence presences in the global trance scene.

The Dutch producer has made his name(s) on music that both soars and throttles, blending delicacy, groove, raw emotion and shimmery synths into tracks that lift listeners into the state of transcendence that is the genre's namesake. A longtime regular at every major large-scale global dance festival, Corsten is currently off the road and posted up at his home in the Netherlands, where he's spent his quarantine hanging with his wife and children, tinkering in the garden and working in the studio.

His latest release, the Trance Wax collab "Black Lion," dropped last week, with more music and a new album -- which will be Corsten's seventh under his given name -- on the way. Here, the producer talks about his early output, the best parts of quarantine and the unique, enduring appeal of trance music.

1. Where are you in the world right now, and what's the setting like?

Im at my home in the Netherlands! The setting is pretty good, actually. Mostly the studio, and Im lucky to have a spacious garden. With the heatwave were currently having in the Netherlands its nice to work on my tan.

2. What is the first album or piece of music you bought for yourself, and what was the medium?

My very first piece of music was a 7-inch vinyl of Full Force's "Alice, I Want You Just For Me." I was smitten with that tune at the time.

3. What did your parents do for a living when you were a kid, and what do they think of what you do for a living now?

My dad was a sales rep for a pharmaceutical company for pets, and my mom worked in a clothing store. They have always been very supportive of my career choice, as long as I followed my passion and my heart. My dad later started working for me in my company, so he has always been very much involved.

4. What was the first song you ever made?

It was an EP on Hithouse Records by Spirit Of Adventure. It was me with three friends goofing around in the studio. This was in 1991. The main track of that EP was called "Total Distortion," which became the blueprint for The Tellurians' "The Navigator," a big rave hit in those days.

5. If you had to recommend one album for someone looking to get into dance music, what would you give them?

Not so much a "dance" album, but definitely electronic -- it would be Singularity by Jon Hopkins. I draw a lot of inspiration for my own records from it. Its so good!

6. Whats the first thing you bought for yourself when you started making money as a DJ?

I actually started out as a music producer. The DJ thing came later for me. All the money I earned with my first productions and remixes, I invested back into my own studio. Studio gear was very expensive in those days, since it was all hardware. So by doing that, I could build out a better studio for myself and come up with better sounding music.

7. Whats the last song you listened to?

Actually my new single under my FERR by Ferry Corsten alias, called "Please." Coming soon on the Stillpoint imprint of Flashover Recordings.

8. Whats one song you wish you had produced?

"Opus" by Eric Prydz.

9. How are you filling your time during quarantine?

Spending lots of time with my wife and kids, which has been great. I cant remember when I had this much time off to spend with family as I do now. However, I cant wait to pick up touring again and get back into that rhythm!

10. Whats distinctive about the place you grew up, and how did it shape you?

Well, I grew up in a town just outside Rotterdam, but Rotterdam basically is my hometown. What I love about Rotterdam is its avant-garde vibe. Its always evolving but always staying true to itself. Rotterdammers are straightforward people with a no-BS attitude, which I love.

Its a metropole -- however, it has that feeling of a small city where everything you need is nearby and everyone knows each other. This brought me in contact with a lot of producers back in the day who I collaborated with.

11. What's the first dance music show that really blew your mind?

This is a while back, mid '90s, but it must have been one of the first MayDay events in Germany. The scale of that event was like nothing I had ever seen before.

12. What do your kids think of what you do?

They are super proud. They love to come into my studio and check out what Im doing, and their faces light up when they see me on YouTube or something.

13. What is the first thing you do when you get back to your hotel room after a show?

Grab a warm shower, fall asleep almost immediately, and try to delay my alarm as much as possible, haha!

14. What is the craziest thing youve ever seen happening in the crowd during one of your sets?

In the middle of an immense crowd in Australia, I saw a guy in a wheelchair being lifted up on his friends shoulders. He was bouncing around for a few minutes to my music before going face-first back to the crowd. I hope he was okay.

15. What is the primary appeal of trance music?

Of course the connection of the trance family is very strong, but also I think the melodies play a big part. I think a good trance record hits you right in the feels in a way no other genre could possibly could. The emotions paired with the genre are hard to describe.

16. How is the trance community different from communities in other genres of electronic music?

Trance has become more like a culture rather than a genre of dance music. Trance fans are loyal, and theyre so open-minded. I know so many fans who were strangers to each other but by connecting through social media and events became best [party] mates for life. How great is it that you literally make best friends for life on the dance floor?

17. Why is so much trance music made by Dutch artists?

I think we were right at the forefront when dance music started to go really global. At that time, trance was massive in the Netherlands, and has since stuck with many producers. But we have many great house, techno and hardstyle artists as well.

18. What's the best part of being off the road right now?

Spending time with my kids, as they had quite a long time off school due to Covid-19 as well. And Im being creative more than ever in the studio, so you guys can expect a new album in the future.

19. Any advice for other producers on getting through this challenging time?

Use this precious time to keep developing yourself as a producer, and keep challenging yourself. Being a great producer means you are able to create music from different angles and keep experimenting with sounds.

20. One piece of advice you'd give to your younger self?

Perhaps I would have told myself to stay with the artist name Ferry Corsten only, instead of the million aliases I had over the years.

Giant Updates Trance Full Suspension and Talon Hardtail Mountain Bikes for 2021 – Singletracks.com

The updated Giant Trance. All photos from giant-bicycles.com.

Giant just announced major updates to two of their mountain bikes, the Trance X 29 and Talon hardtail.

The updated Trance X 29 rolls on you guessed it 29-inch wheels. The aluminum alloy frame features a flip chip design that toggles the geometry between long, low, and slack and (roughly) shorter, lower, and slacker. Specifically, when moving from high mode to low mode the reach decreases from 19.4cm to 19.1cm; the bottom bracket drop increases from 1.2cm to 1.6m; and the head tube angle slackens from 66.2 to 65.5. Check out the full geometry chart below.

Giant increased the rear suspension travel to 135mm, and both of the current builds feature a 150mm fork. The frame is said to accommodate 29er tires up to 2.5 inches wide.

The Trance X 29 2 build comes with an SLX drivetrain and a Fox 36 Rhythm fork, while the X 29 3 build includes a more affordable SRAM Eagle SX drivetrain and a RockShox 35 Gold fork. Both builds include a pedal-friendly 30t chainring up front. Retail pricing was not available at the time of publication.

Theres not a lot of information about the Talon hardtail on the Giant website yet, but heres what we know so far.

The 2021 Giant Talon is available with either 29er or 27.5-inch wheels, and depending on the size/build, comes with either a 100mm or 80mm suspension fork. This aluminum bike is geared toward budget and beginner buyers, but still offers nice features like internal cable routing, dropper post compatibility, and mounts on the rear stays for fenders or racks.

Where to Go When You DJ | One EDM – One EDM

In this article Im going to discuss EDM Music Boston. This is a new music community that is growing every day.

I first heard about EDM from my friend Dan. We talked about EDM a lot and we were talking about Dans club, Bostons House of Trance. This club was really good, but Dan also said that there was no music in his club. We thought that was pretty weird because it was a club where you could dance all night without any music.

It turned out that he had hired some DJs. He said he hadnt really looked into it until he was on the phone with a girl he was trying to impress. She told him that his club was like a hole in the wall. He asked her what the big deal was. She told him she was the DJ at a house party and they were playing EDM and he should have his own club.

Thats when he realized there was a need for a DJ and started looking into what DJs were in the area. Thats when he found out there was a whole world of EDM happening in Boston. EDM is growing every day and now people are really starting to realize it. People who used to listen to only techno and pop are now dancing to trance, dubstep, and all sorts of other things. They are getting really into it.

Theres no shortage of DJs in Boston. This is a good thing because if a DJ isnt booked then he cant go get booked anywhere else.

You can check out the Boston house party scene at places like The Boston House. Other popular places include the House of Trance and the Club Oasis in Somerville. There are also more underground clubs that I havent checked out yet in the city. These arent really well known though.

There are also tons of clubs in the area. You can check them out at clubs like The Loft in Jamaica Plain, The Garage in Dorchester, and The Metro at Harvard Square. You can even check out DJs at Boston Night Out and Bass Night in the Theater District. and the House of Blues in Roxbury. You can even find music at the clubs that are on the fringes of the rave scene at places like The Sanctuary and Club Underground.

Most clubs offer live music so you can be sure your favorite DJ is at these clubs. Even if the clubs arent playing any EDM its, they will most likely play other things. Just dont expect the best DJs in town to be there either.

DJs at the clubs tend to play more traditional dance music and hip hop. You will probably also see DJs playing a lot of trance, drum and bass, and house music.

If you want to DJ at the clubs, you will need a DJ equipment. Some clubs will give you a set for free. Others will charge you an hourly rate, but most will give you a decent amount to start.

In addition, the DJ will also need some CDJs and speakers. You can either rent or buy these from some club owners.

The Psychedelic Shooter Moose Life Releases This Month – Happy Gamer

Moose Life is one of the more interesting shooters set to come out this August. It has a psychedelic vibe that you just have to see for yourself. It also involves a moose so right out of the gate, you know it will provide plenty of novel gaming experiences.

The game is being developed by Llamasoft and draws a lot of inspiration from the arcade games of the 1980s. Looking at the games screenshots, it looks like a never-ending sequence of bright colors and non-stop shooting action.

The developer made Moose Life to help gamers get into a trance-like state, which is further enhanced by the techno score playing in the background. It adds to the games relaxing nature and makes two hours seem like minutes.

As far as the premise, players will get to become a rainbow voxel deer tasked with saving innocent sheep from enemy spacehsips. There are a couple of modes that will be available at launch, including a traditional mode where you try to rack up as many points as possible.

Whats also neat is the ability to use a Restart Best mechanic that lets you join in to any part of the game that has been unlocked previously. Then theres a pure mode, which lets you enjoy a single game from the beginning.

If you like the ability to just play freely, the free mode is probably what youll want to check out the most. You dont have to worry about high scores or running out of lives. You can just enjoy the melodies and the bright lights flowing throughout your screen.

Not many games have a trance effect on players like Moose Life. It instantly makes it unique and helps extended sessions flight right by. After a while, you wont care about the stressors in your life. Youll just be able to sit back and dive deeper into the games flow.

Even better, Moose Life supports VR headsets. That means even more immersive experiences and trips that only dreams are made of. Seeing the deer flow throughout your screen with pinks, yellows, and greens will put you in the right mood.

As long as there isnt an unexpected hiccup, Moose Life will be available on Steam starting August 12. Based on the trailers, screenshots, and descriptions, it seems like a pretty unique shooter that is perfect if youre just looking to flow and see some cool things.

What Are Examples of EDM Events? | One EDM – One EDM

What are examples of EDM events and when you may need them? This article will help you answer that question.

One example is when you are attending a party or event that is geared toward the music genre. If it is going to be centered around a DJ or you want to have a specific DJ in a particular room, then you may want to consider having an EDM event. Even if the party or event is not centered on the music genre, you can still benefit from having an EDM event.

Another example is if you want to attend a party or event that has the music genre as the theme. For example, you can use your home DJs home studio or any other type of electronic equipment to create a sound that has a dance floor.

Another type of EDM that you can do is to have a dance party at your place. For example, you can have a party at your house that has a DJ playing music that will allow people to dance the night away. This may be the best way for you to get the party or event started because of the energy that you can create.

A third example of EDM is if you are having a wedding or special event where you will be hosting guests. This is great to have because this can make your event more entertaining. You can host a party in a club or hotel that will give you a good crowd environment. This way, you can enjoy yourself and not worry about being embarrassed about how your party or event is going.

An event in a bar or nightclub might be fun for you and other attendees, but it will be a problem if you are not able to have some type of entertainment or activity to keep the party going. If the club or venue is full, you may need to use EDM as entertainment. You can have people dance to music, talk to people, or do whatever you want in order to make the party or event successful.

Some of the worlds most prominent festivals include:

Ostend Beach Festival:Located near the North Sea off of Belgiums largest coastal city, it is one of the largest beach festivals. People can dance the night away while standing on the beautiful white sand beaches. Check out the city of Bruges before heading to the festival as well.

Airbeat-One Festival:This festival has become one of Europes most exciting EDM events to check out. Averaging over 45,000 people worldwide, Airboat-One Festivals location is a Northern German airfield and notable stars who have performed there include Hardwell and Marshmello. It has a unique stage design and a world-class visual production.

Tomorrowland:Considered as the worlds most popular EDM festival, Tomorrowland attracts 400,000 people annually. Located in the small Belgian city of Boom, it has more than 1,000 acts for almost every edition to satisfy the electronic music craving of the attendee. The person attending Tomorrowland will have a magical time filled with vibrant memories.

Cirque Magique:This innovative festival has everything that all EDM fans love to have. Food, drinks, camping, visuals, attractions, and importantly, fantastic music. Just like Tomorrowland, Cirque Magiques host country is Belgium, specifically the city of Ledegem.

51st State Festival:This London-based festival celebrates pure House music and Chicago roots. It is a transatlantic extravaganza that merges the original House scene with the international EDM industry. As the festivals location is in London, there are so many things to check out in the U.K. capital aside from grooving to the beats.

It is important that you know what EDM is and how to get it ready for your next event. When you have a little extra knowledge of EDM, you will be well on your way to having fun with the next event you plan.

One of the first things that you should do is understand that EDM is made up of many different genres. These include trance, progressive, hardstyle, and even hip hop, but there is more than just these types of styles that can be mixed together.

For example, there are several artists who have made hardstyle a part of their career and even their music. This means that you will be able to have hardstyle in a party or event. You will be able to enjoy the music, but at the same time, you will also be able to have the feel of a rave atmosphere that is very unique. which is something that can be very enjoyable for you.

This type of EDM is perfect for those that are interested in keeping the music quiet while still having fun. This is because the sound will be a little bit loud and will have people dancing along with the music. You will be able to get some great bass, but you will also have a lot of high pitched sounds coming from the speakers that will keep the audience focused on the music.

A great number of people love to listen to EDM. Its one of the hottest new genres. In fact, a lot of people prefer to listen to EDM than to dance to any other kind of music. Its just perfect for those who like to party all night.

There are so many genres of EDM. Some examples of EDM include trance, hardstyle, hardcore techno, trance-house, bass music, and many more. Here are a few examples:

Techno:This is a very pulse-pounding sub-genre where the rhythm continues on and on. It debuted in the Detroit music scene in the 1980s and became popular worldwide, especially in European nightclubs. Casual music fans in the 1990s and early-2000s would use to categorize all forms of electronic music as Techno.

Trance:It is an electronic music sub-genre that first popularized in Germany in the 1990s. Prominent stars of Trance include Paul Van Dyk, Ferry Corsten, and Armin van Buuren. The music is distinguished by a tempo that lies between one hundred and one hundred and twenty-five beats per second. The word trance describes a state of hypnotism with heightened consciousness.

Drum and bass: Its origins derive from the UK rave scene in the 1990s. It has plenty of breakbeats and its typical beat is between one hundred and sixty to one hundred and eighty beats per minute. It also incorporates heavy basslines and bass rhythms. The sub-genre has given way to other sub-genres such as trap and dubstep.

There are a lot of benefits to listening to dance music. The main reason why people listen to it is that its cool and energizing. If you are not interested in EDM then you should stop listening. Some of the artists who were influenced by EDM are Calvin Harris, Tiesto, and Diplo.

You will be surprised to know that EDM has a wide variety of music. The music range includes hardstyle, trance, hardcore techno, bass music, electro house, hardcore techno, breakcore, tribal techno, and many others. So, when you check out different sub-genres, you will surely love the music.

While the term EDM has been a buzz term for the last few years, electronic dance music has been here for decades. And no matter how you slice it, we cant see the termEDMand lump every style and artist that puts out electronic music into one pot.

Around 2010, the term EDM (Electronic Dance Music) came to encompass the now plentiful subgenres of dance music that evolved from house music, including trance, big room, future house, dubstep, progressive house and many others. Raving now applies to attending massive international festivals like Tomorrowland, which in 2017 attracted over 400,000 fans over two weekends and paid millions of dollars for world-famous DJ headliners.

The EDM scene has come a long way from its underground history where event promoters would host low-key warehouse raves. Or even DJs hosting late-night underground house parties that would wake up the neighbors and attract unwanted attention from the authorities.

Legendary House producer Carl Cox explains about the current EDM industry, EDMs an entry level to dance music, and Im very happy about that. We fought for so long for dance music to be respected there. EDMs a sound America has latched on to, but once people start going left and right of that scene, theyre going to find their art departments, their Loco Dices and their Sven Vths and thats a really good place to be.

Peterson reports just five hospitalized from Kerr County with COVID-19 – dailytimes.com

Kerr County reported three new cases of coronavirus on Tuesday, and Peterson Regional Medical Center said there are just five people in the hospital with the virus.

It's a bit of good news as the number of active cases has held at about 59. The Texas Department of State Health Services and local numbers either lag, don't agree or have errors. The state has reported six deaths, while Peterson Health reports five.

The numbers reported locally also provide no mention of the number of cases from Kerr County that are being treated at the Department of Veterans Affairs hospital in San Antonio or those from the area being treated at other Bexar County hospitals.

On Tuesday, the state's new cases crossed back over the 9,000 mark after two days of declining numbers. The number of recorded deaths was 242. Since March 15, COVID-19 has on average killed 51 Texans per day, but many of those deaths have come since June 24.

Across the state there were 8,674 people hospitalized accounting for about 20% of total hospitalizations.

The total number of cases reported since the outbreak began in March has topped 451,000, with the death toll approaching 7,300, state officials said. Almost 138,000 cases remain active, with almost 8,700 cases requiring hospitalization, down from just over 8,800 on Monday. The testing positivity rate has climbed to 13.88% as of Monday, the most recent figure available.

Lake View City Officials Pleased To Announce New Lagoon Is Now Effectively Treating Wastewater – 1380 KCIM

Lake View city officials are pleased to announce their recently completed lagoon is now filled and is successfully processing wastewater from the community. Administrator, Scott Peterson, says the city council met at the lagoon site just northeast of town prior to their meeting Monday night. He says they did identify one minor issue, but everything seems to be functioning as intended.

Peterson adds the lagoon has now reached the substantial completion stage and all that remains before they can call the project finished is for it to operate for a few months to identify any outstanding issues. Lake View has been working to update their wastewater treatment facility for more than five years, and Peterson says it is a relief to be so close to wrapping it up.

The city started filling the $6 million lagoon about a month ago and only recently has it started treating wastewater. According to Peterson, they will be closely monitoring its operations into the fall and winter for any problems as they check off items on the punch list.

Chinas secret war on America, a Fox News sex scandal, and a space-time wormhole in this weeks dubious tabloids – Boing Boing

Expect to see National Enquirer readers driving around in Rolls Royces and hopping private jets to their private islands.

Theyll all be rolling in money thanks to an ad in this weeks edition that tells them: How to save $19,899,901.

Just imagine what they can do with all that money!

And saving $19,899,901 - such a precise sum, this offer must be legitimate - is easy.

Simply buy a fake 10.64 carat pink diamond ring for $99, and youll have saved that eight-figure fortune if you were thinking of buying the genuine article for $19.9 million, which is a apparently how much a similar real pink diamond recently fetched at auction.

And just think how much more money youll save not having to buy costly insurance for your $99 new family heirloom.

Ignore the small print that says the regular price of the ring is $399 and that youll only Save $300. Just think of the $19,899,901 youre really saving, and splash out!

Or theres an even easier way to save $19,899,901: build a time machine, go back to December 12, 1980, when Apple first offered shares at $22 a piece, and buy a slew of stock.

It makes the $4.99 US cover price of the Enquirer all the more attractive, especially when they bring us an Explosive Special Investigation! as the cover story: Chinas Secret War on America!

Xenophobia is the new black at the Enquirer, which has joined President Trump in learning to love Russia and instead view China as an evil empire hell-bent on world domination! Like Starbucks, but without the matcha lattes.

8,000 agents infiltrate US in 20-year attack, the report claims. These were allegedly Communist Party soldiers - most posing as students.

Where did they come up with the figure of 8,000?

Could it be from the recent report by an educational company that estimated around 8,000 Chinese students a year are expelled from American universities and colleges because of cheating and poor academic performance?

A new US ban on Chinese graduate students who earned their undergraduate degrees at Chinese universities linked to the Chinese military went into effect in June, keeping up to 3,000 Chinese students out of the country. But just because those universities often have ties to the Peoples Liberation Army it doesnt make the students soldiers. The move has been condemned by many as racist and fostering anti-Asian bigotry, which isnt helped by the Enquirer repeating its fondly-held allegation: Experts charged the coronavirus is a bioweapon created in a Wuhan lab to weaken and distract America."

The Enquirer attacks Chinas Secret War on America and the countrys expansionist military leaders who have "seized islands. They should have done it the American way: When Trump wanted to buy Greenland, he was willing to make them a fair offer. Thats not expansionism. Thats just good old American free trade.

The Globe continues to follow Trumps lead in turning its laser-like focus on the evils of former BFF Fox News, with this weeks cover story: Fox News Sex Scandal Explodes!

Fox hosts Sean Hannity, Tucker Carlson and Howard Kurtz have been accused of sexual misconduct, the Globe claims, which to some might seem like business as usual at the network.

But while former anchor Ed Henry has been accused in a lawsuit of sexual assault, Hannity and Carlson are named in the suit for lesser questionable sexual behavior, which they vehemently deny.

"Can the network survive? asks the Globe. As if iFox viewers, who have turned a blind eye to every one of President Trumps alleged sexual assaults, are going to be so disgusted by a Fox sex scandal that theyll turn to CNN.

Speaking of sex scandals, the late billionaire convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epsteins former girlfriend and lieutenant Ghislaine Maxwell, currently in a Brooklyn jail awaiting trial, is the subject of a Globe story: Ghislaine Set to be Stripped Bare!

No, shes not been deprived of all clothing because shes a suicide risk (though she is reportedly clad in paper prison garb for that reason.) Shes not even being strip-searched naked in jail, though that may conceivably have already happened. Rather, the Globe' suggests that Maxwell could be stripped of her fortune and lose her $20 million secret stash in banks across the world if Epsteins victims sue her for damages, or if her wealth came directly from supporting Epsteins illegal sexual activities.

Britains Royals come in for their usual share of tabloid fairytales.

An "Enquirer Exclusive reports: "Queen Kicks Meghan Out of Royal Family! No, she didnt. It didnt happen. Meghan is still there, still a Duchess.

Despite all evidence to the contrary, the Enquirer' claims that the Queen in a fit of regal rage over the new Harry-and-Meghan-friendly biography Finding Freedom, has ordered Meghan banished from Britains royal family - forever. At least theres some good news: Harry and Archie and welcome back - alone.

This attempt at fair and balanced report displays the great efforts the Globe made for impartiality, only calling Meghan a diva and a demanding Duchess instead of the usual catalogue of insults they shower on her.

The Enquirer helpfully adds at the end of its story: Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan did not respond to requests for comment. Well, theres a surprise.

The Globe approaches Harry and Meghan's drama from an alternate perspective, reporting: Fed-Up William & Kate: Our Side of the Story!

Shockingly, Duchess Kate and Prince William have not given an exclusive interview to the Globe.' Its just Kensington Palace PR spin regurgitated and barely warmed up. The rag, clearly refusing to take sides, reports: Kind-hearted Kate has repeatedly tried to mend fences and heal the family, while a former Palace staffer describes Harry and Meghan as spoiled cry babies.

In case readers are unclear where Globe sensibilities lie, an opinion piece opines: Meghans A Dirty Dog. The Duchess belongs in a doghouse after allegedly dumping her rescue pup, Bogart, with Canadian friends. Meghan reportedly left her beloved adopted dog Bogart with friends when she moved to Britain in 2017. But now she is back in the US, the Globe brands her the Wicked Witch for failing to retake possession of her mutt.

Lets ignore the fact that after almost three years in a new home the dog may well be attached to its new family, and taking it back might be cruel to both.

Meghan just cant catch a break. Neither can Angelina Jolie, another perennial tabloid target.

Aging Angie Swears Off Sex! reports the Enquirer, leaving readers to wonder how many listening devices and hidden cameras the rag actually has secreted around Jolies bedroom. She has allegedly been celibate since her split from Brad Pitt four years ago, but just because she hasnt been photographed with another man or woman doesnt necessarily mean she has given up on sex.

Us magazine reports on Angies Plea to her kids: Make Amends.

Jolie allegedly wants her eldest children Maddox, 19, and Pax, 16, to reconcile with their father Brad Pitt, according to an unidentified source. A second anonymous source helpfully adds: Theres no sign this is true. Great, lets run the story anyway.

With Ellen DeGeneres under investigation by her TV chat shows parent company Warner Media, Us mags cover story asks: Who Will Steal Her Show - though they ruin the effect by omitting the obligatory question mark, turning the headline into a declaratory statement that makes one wonder if Abbott & Costellos baseball player has left first base and plans to take over Ellens show.

Insiders say Ellens finished, reports the mag, which suggests that Kristen Bell, James Corden and Drew Barrymore are allegedly in line for $500m job - but she wont quit! That could make it harder for anyone to take over her show, I suspect.

The Kardashian-West marriage meltdown is scrutinized by Us mag under the headline: "Why Kim Cant Let Go? Could it be arthritis? No, apparently she still loves Kanye, or as an unnamed source says: theres a desire to make it work.

Katy Perry dominates - and I use that word advisedly - the cover of People magazine, taking up so much space that she could be about to deliver octuplets, despite the headline claiming: Im So Excited for Our Baby Girl! She appears on the cover dutifully Photoshopped, air-brushed, smoothed and plasticized like every other People mag cover celebrity, turned into a living waxwork.

Days away from delivering her baby with fianc Orlando Bloom, she is yet again photographed with Bloom consistently absent. Im sure theres an innocent explanation.

Fortunately we have the crack investigative team at Us mag to tell us that Maya Jama wore it best, that Olivia Culpo was very chubby growing up, and that the stars are just like us: they go hiking, dine out, shop for food, exercise, paddle-board and grab drinks to go. Im lucky if I leave the house once a day to walk the dog during the pandemic, but thats probably why Im not a celebrity.

And late-breaking news from the Globe reports that the city of Riverside, Iowa, has declared itself the Future Birthplace of Star Treks Capt. James T. Kirk!

A publicity stunt that took place in 1985.

Maybe the news was caught in a space-time wormhole.

Onwards and downwards . . .

St. Barts Travel: 7 Things Not To Miss When Visiting the Island – Forbes

Its easy to feel skeptical about this star-studded Caribbean getaway; until you find yourself being pummeled back into shape at a spa overhanging the cerulean waters, strolling the island's untouched beaches or snoozing to the sound of the ocean's swell by an infinity edge pool, that is. And you reluctantly realize that, you too, have fallen head over heels for the paradise island.

After being on lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic for months, just three years after the island was wiped out by Hurricane IrmaSt. Barts has finally reopened. Travelers from all over the world are currently welcome to enter St. Barts in accordance with the testing requirements and regulations outlined here. Follow our guide of seven highlights not to miss when visiting this far-flung corner dubbed "little France."

The turquoise waters of Gouverneur Beach in St. Barts.

Surrounded by warm translucent waters and adorned with sloping hills draped in jungly vegetation, the tiny 10 square-mile St. Barts is a volcanic island of incredible natural beauty. Now a French overseas collectivity, it was first discovered and named in 1493 by Christopher Columbus after his brother Bartolomo.

Geared toward a high-flying clientele of celebrities (Johnny Hallyday, Frances answer to Elvis, is buried here for instance, and his grave has become a pilgrimage site for his many fans), billionaires come to lounge poolside at their private villas and show off their designer beachwear at the islands clutch of upscale hotels. Add the French gastronomical offerings to the mix, and youve got the whole picture.

1. The Event to Book: St. Barts Gourmet Festival

Celebrating a longstanding tradition of culinary excellence and the islands French ties, the Gourmet Festival tops St. Barts' social calendar. And the good news is that the seventh edition has just been announced.

The 2020 festival will take place November 11-15, it will be overseen by three-star chef Pierre Gagnaire and will feature chefs Dimitri Droisneau, Marcel Ravin, Jean-Rmi Caillon, Sbastien Vauxion, Cdric Groletand Juan Arbelaez.

The sixth edition of the St. Barts Gourmet Festival welcomed a host of French chefs, including ... [+] Michelin starred Guillaume Goupil from Le Burgundy Hotels Le Baudelaire restaurant in Paris.

And as American and French visitors tend to flock to the island at this time just to get a taste for the Caribbean-meets-French experience, do book your table early.

For the occasion, the organizers round up a handful of Michelin starred chefs from France and jet them off to the Caribbean island ("its a hard gig," the chefs will tell you wryly), so they can cook alongside locally established chefs in their kitchens, and give regular guests a new spin on the St. Barts dining experience.

Last years instalment included a star-studded cast: from patron of the festival Arnaud Faye (two stars at the bewitching La Chvre dOr in Eze in the South of France), to Eric Bouchenoire (two stars at Atelier Joel Robuchon), Taku Sekine (one star Dersou and Cheval dOr both in Paris), Guillaume Goupil (one star at the top-end Burgundy Hotel in Paris), Stphane Buron (two stars at the iconic Courchevel hotel Chabichou), Jean-Denis Rieubland (one star at the sumptuous Royal Champagne Hotel and Spa an hour outside Paris), Patric Vander (one star at Les Fresques at the Hotel Royal Evian Resort), and Philippe Jourdin (one star at Le Faventia, Terre Blanche Hotel on the Cte dAzur).

For one week, the chefs rustled up special dinner menus at local restaurants and hotels: Le Barthlemy Hotel & Spa, Hotel Christopher, Hotel Le Toiny, Le Sereno, Hotel Manapany, Le Tamarin, LEsprit Jean Claude Dufour and Nikki Beach.

The highlights were plenty. But one chefs dinner that particularly stood out was Guillaume Goupils Italian-infused French feast at Le Sereno Hotel. His simply grilled local lobster with fresh corn pasta and ginger stock will remain forever engraved in my memory. Tangy, fleshy, light and moreish, it was perfection.

2. The Eco-Hotel to Stay at: Manapany

Unless youve been sleeping under a rock for the last three years, youll have read about the grand undertaking to rebuild the island following the widespread destruction of Hurricane Irma. Along with the reconstruction (coming in at no less than $1.4 billion) the islands swanky hotels have reemerged looking slicker than ever. However, far from the kerfuffle of swanky cars disemboweling vacationers ready to bask in the sun in their designer clobber, is eco-hotel Manapany. Run by hotel collection B Signature CEO Anne Jousse, its desert-island atmosphere is its main asset - and a unique one at that.

The hotel bar looking out over the pool and ocean and the turquoise waters at the end of the beach ... [+] path of Manapany Hotels beach.

Tucked at one end of the islands wild Anse des Cayes beach, devoid of buildings, the setting is one of dreams. The hotel's two pools, both with ocean views, and the all-wooden circular restaurant that overhangs the water, are backed by beautiful hills of thick tangly nature that soar up to cobalt blue skies.

An all-wooden villa at Manapany Hotel and the view from a villa of the hotels preserved, wild bay.

Mealtimes here will have you stay for an hour - or two, or more - as you take in the changing colors of the skies above the inky horizon. And before you know it, your day chimes to a slower local pace of life made up of breakfast on the water, sunbathing to the sounds of the waves, and drinks on the castaway-style terrace of your room.

3. The Dreamiest Beach to Drive to: Plage du Gouverneur

Open to all and away from man-made constructions, the retina-pulling waters of this beach are lined by a ribbon of the finest of white sands that screams: Ive arrived in the Caribbean!

The white sands and cerulean waters of Gouverneur Beach, St. Barts.

Located on the south side of the island, the unspoiled stretch of beach is ideal for reconnecting with nature outside of a hotel setting and meeting locals who come here for some downtime and a swim in the cool salty waters. When the waters are calm, its also a great snorkeling hotspot. Other beaches to check out on the island include Saline, Shell Beach, and Colombier.

4. The Place to Go For Lobster: La Langouste

Something else that should be on your to-do list, is eat lobster, bien sr. And lots of it. St. Barts doesnt have many local specialties culinary-wise, cherry-picking its produce in neighboring St. Martin and Guadeloupe islands - except for lobster. Have it in a sandwich, tossed in a salad, or, as its served at La Langouste, mixed with fresh creamy tagliatelle.

Lobster is a St. Barts staple, and La Lagouste is the place to go to sample it.

Tucked away in the quieter north-western part of the island in the Bay of Angels, is an empty stretch of sand you get to have all to yourself. And it's here, at a low-key three-star hotel, that you'll find La Langouste. Its laid-back no-frills vibe is a welcome breath of fresh air though, especially if all the glitz and glamour of the fat-cat hotels have left you wondering where the local life is at.

La Langouste also serves lip-smacking good creole dishes like curries with rice and spicy fritters, which are perfect for mixing up your culinary experience while on the island.

5. The Hotspot to Go Shopping: Gustavia Harbour

The main town and capital of the island, Gustavia is a picture-perfect port surrounded by green hills, red-roofed houses and a handful of restaurants along the water like the Victoria. A smart colonial-style white clapboard set-up, it serves cocktails and stone-baked pizza but also large healthy salads and fresh-pressed fruit and vegetable juices. Looking out on the port and calm waters, from here, its easy to imagine the islands early days.

Gustavia Harbour, St. Barts.

After it was discovered by Christopher Columbus, the island became a French colony in the 1600s, before being handed over to the Swedes at the end of the 1700s for almost a century - in fact, Gustavia gets its name from the Swedish king of the time. A century later, the island returned to French rule until it became an autonomous territory in 2007 and left the EU in 2012.

As well as the islands main town, Gustavia is also its main shopping hub with plenty of French brands like Cartier and Herms to keep the crowds busy. Get lost in the cobblestone streets garlanded with fairy lights that click on at nightfall as music drifts through the streets. Pick up silk sarongs from Poupette, and pop into Clic to browse photography books by lesser-known designers. For something a little more cocktail-appropropriate, St. Barts has its very own offshoot of Pariss Montaigne Market. And for something a little more local, head to Ligne St. Barth beauty brand where products are made locally.

6. The Spa to Book: Hotel Christophers Sisley Spa

The smart Hotel Christopher, with a swanky infinity-edge pool, is where youll want to lay sunbathing all day. But its discreet iconic French branded Sisley spa with killer ocean views is a must for some post-flight TLC.

The Sisley Spa at Hotel Christopher, which looks out onto the ocean.

Small and intimate, its tucked away right at the very extremity of the hotel, along a stone path lined by villas on one side and the turquoise water on the other. Understated, the spa's seating area hangs over the water and looks out on one of the islands many curved bays.

Theres no changing in a communal area here. Each guest is led to their private cabin with glass doors thrown open onto the water and an outdoor shower youll never want to leave. Except the treatment is well worth going back inside for. Laying on the massage table, the sound of the waves just down below and the therapists slow and steady expert movements will transport you somewhere close to nirvana.

7. The Place to Party: Nikki Beach

Regulars seem to all descend on the island to compare notes and suntans, catch up on gossip - and party. And one essential go-to for a champagne-fuelled brunch that, before you know it, turns into an everyone-on-tables daytime dance marathon, is Nikki Beach.

The smart set-up at Nikki Beach, right on the beach.

Its gentle clubby vibe is what keeps people coming back, but also its setting. Laid out on a gleaming white open-plan wooden deck just steps from the lapping turquoise waters, its the perfect spot for groups of friends and families to eat and drink with their toes in the sand. A must, no St. Barts experience is quite complete until youve danced the afternoon away here.

Recycling being boosted on holiday island of Santorini | Kathimerini – www.ekathimerini.com

The southern Aegean island of Santorini is seeking to set higher standards in waste management and recycling practices to become a paradigm for other parts of the country facing landfill problems.

Thanks to a program run by the Hellenic Recovery Recycling Corporation (HRRCO) and the municipal authority of Thira, the number of blue recycling bins across the popular holiday island has reached 455, while there are plans for an additional 200.

The number of bell-shaped collection receptacles for glass, moreover, has doubled to 50 with the addition of 25 new single-stream bins.

During a recent visit to the island, Environment Minister Kostis Hatzidakis said that there are also plans to install separate bins across the island for collecting aluminum. Also, as part of this program, talks have taken place with the operators of Santorinis airport so that four collection streams can be set up there by autumn, he added.

The minister went on to herald the closure of the landfill that currently serves the island poorly due to its small capacity and outdated technology saying that an interim solution is being sought for how the islands trash will be managed until a new, modern waste management facility is constructed via a private-public partnership.

HRRCO is already working closely with 80 businesses on Santorini that have volunteered to collect plastic mineral water bottles which are a huge problem on many islands whose water is brackish and not safe for consumption as well as to help in a campaign for limiting their use.

We are also seeking to restrict single-use plastics, which will be abolished in 2021 as part of the governments policy, Hatzidakis said last Sunday.

We want Santorini to set an example not just for the other islands of the Cyclades and the southern Aegean, but also for Greece as a whole. Because when it comes to recycling, we are not even in the 20th century, but somewhere in the 19th, the minister quipped.

Today marks a new start in the effort with the support of the local authority to win the battle of modern waste management practices, he added.

The proposal for replacing the current landfill with a modern waste management facility built jointly by the Greek state and a private firm, as is already the case in Epirus and Serres, in northwestern and northern Greece respectively, has already been submitted to the Development Ministry.

It is shameful that, in the year 2020, we have 14 uncontrolled landfills operating in the countrys most popular tourism destinations. Our aim is to shut them all down by 2022 so that there are no more uncontrolled landfills in the Cyclades or Dodecanese islands, Hatzidakis said.
