Global Surgical Robotics Market 2019 Produced CAGR Value in Demand By 2033 - 3rd Watch News

In a time of social distancing, robots could be just what the doctor ordered – Seattle Times

TOKYO -As the coronavirus pandemic rewrites the rules of human interaction, it also has inspired new thinking about how robots and other machines might step in.

The stuff of the bot world early factory-line automation up to todays artificial intelligence has been a growing fact of life for decades. The worldwide health crisis has added urgency to the question of how to bring robotics into the public-health equation.

Nowhere is that truer than in Japan, a country with a long fascination with robots, from android assistants to robot receptionists. Since the virus arrived, robots have offered their services as bartenders, security guards and deliverymen.

But they dont necessarily need to supplant humans, researchers say. They can also bridge the gap between people mindful of social distance now or when the next major contagion hits.

Want to drop in on your elderly parents but are afraid of passing on a coronavirus infection? Maybe youre missing your grandchildren, and finding Zoom chats a little limiting?

Ideas are brewing.

The newme robot developed by Japanese company Avatarin is basically a tablet computer on a stand, with wheels. The user controls the avatar from a laptop or tablet, and his or her face shows on the avatars screen.

Its really like teleporting your consciousness, founder and CEO Akira Fukabori said. You are really present.

Already available commercially, Avatarins robots have been used by doctors to interact with patients in a Japanese coronavirus ward; by university students in Tokyo to attend a graduation ceremony; and by fans of the Yomiuri Giants baseball team to remotely interview their favorite players after games held in empty stadiums.

There are even avatar robots that have just arrived in the International Space Station.

But its the way the robot is already being used by families separated by the coronavirus that really underscores the heart of the technology starting with the family of the companys chief operating officer, Kevin Kajitani, whose parents live in Seattle.

His parents cant always come and visit their grandson, Fukabori said. But they always access the avatar and can even chase their grandson. And the grandson really hugs the robot.

Avatarin is part of Japans ANA airline group, and the company has joined with the X Prize Foundation to launch a $10 million, four-year contest for companies to create more complex robots that could further develop the avatar concept.

You need to move, Fukabori said. This is really important, because we forget the freedom of this mobility. You can just walk around, and people will talk to you about really, really natural things. That creates human trust. That isnt as easy in WebEx or Zoom, where if you dont know each other its really hard to keep talking.

Work is underway on prototypes that allow users to control a remote robot through virtual-reality headsets and gloves that allow the wearer to pick up, hold, touch and feel an object with a distant robotic hand, with potential uses ranging from space exploration to disaster relief or elderly care.

But Fukabori said the cheaper, lightweight avatars offer more immediate and affordable uses. What sets this project apart from existing avatar robots, the company says, is the ability for users to access the robots easily from a laptop, by renting them out rather than having to buy them.

Avatarin hopes to install the avatars in more hospitals and in elderly-care centers, shops, museums, zoos and aquariums. The company also aims to have 1,000 in place for next years Tokyo Olympics.

In Tokyo, robotics lab ZMP has been developing three small robots to help compensate for Japans shrinking labor force, employing the same technology as self-driving cars.

A delivery robot aims to transport goods ordered online from local warehouses to customers doors; a patrol robot, with six cameras, does the job of a security guard; a self-driving wheelchair can be programed to take users to specific destinations. The wheelchair is already available and approved for use on Tokyo streets. The others still await official permission to venture out alone in public.

Now, the patrol robot has been adapted so it can also disinfect surfaces as it patrols, and is attracting interest from Tokyos Metro stations as well as other businesses.

In May, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe noted surging demand for unmanned deliveries and pledged to carry out tests to see if delivery robots were safe to use on roads and sidewalks by the end of the year.

Even the self-driving wheelchair can come into its own amid a coronavirus-filled world, the company said, potentially helping elderly people move around more independently without a helper who might be a vector for the virus.

Before corona, most customers wanted to reduce workers, ZMPs chief executive, Hisashi Taniguchi, said. But after corona, our customers changed drastically. Now, they want to accelerate unmanned systems.

Qbit Robotics, also in Tokyo, has programmed a robotic arm and hand to interact with customers and serve them coffee, mix cocktails or even serve a simple cup of instant pasta.

President and chief executive Hiroya Nakano said he aims not to replace human interaction but to supply robots that can communicate and entertain in a friendly way.

While robots can sometimes seem disturbing and alien to Westerners, they tend to be seen in a more welcoming light by many Japanese people, Nakano said.

Until now, expectations have been high for what robots can do in the future, but they havent been able to do what humans do, he said. But now we are living with the coronavirus, the idea of no contact or automation has become especially important. And I feel there is an extremely high expectation for robots to meet that demand.

In South Korea, a Chinese-made robot is already greeting children in Seouls schools as they reopen.

The Cruzr, with eyes that beam a neon-blue light and a video screen on its chest, takes kids temperatures and reminds them to follow anti-virus rules.

Please wear your mask properly, the robot told a student last week at Wooam Elementary School whose mask wasnt covering his nose.

Chinese robotmaker UBTech launched Cruzr in 2017 as a humanoid service robot for businesses, but the pandemic has given it added value as a personal assistant free from infection risks.

It is also being used by medical institutions for mass temperature screening, patient monitoring and medical record keeping, helping overwhelmed medical workers.

In June, Seouls Seocho district government deployed Cruzr robots to the districts 51 public schools, helping reduce the burden on overworked teachers.

Before the robot came to school, teachers had taken kids temperatures as they arrived, creating long lines and raising infection risks from human contact. Now, the robot checks the temperature of multiple students as they walk by and immediately sounds an alarm if anyone has a fever.

At first, students were ill at ease with the robot greeting them at the school gate, but in a matter of weeks, students have embraced it as part of the school community, said Yoo Jung-ho, head of Wooams science department.

At the school, students waved toward the robot at the gate as they walked into the school, and nodded in agreement when it reminded them about the mask rules.

The robot can also provide basic academic help and entertain students by teaching them simple dance moves.

Of course, robots cant replace teachers at classrooms yet, but there is significant and rising potential for contactless teaching with the pandemic, Yoo said.

Nine-year-old Lee Hye-rin says she befriended the robot after they danced together.

When I first saw the robot standing in place of our teachers greeting us at the entrance, I found it cold and disorienting, Lee said. But this robot is actually the same height as I am and also displays goofy dance moves, and I realized I can befriend him and share a fun time.

But Lee feels the robot is not so friendly when it orders her to wear her mask properly.

If I fail to follow the mask rule, my teachers warning will be followed with a smile telling me to behave better in the future, but the robot doesnt smile when it warns me about the mask, she said.

Conventional Laproscopic Surgery Market to Witness a Downfall with the Boom in Adoption of Robotic Surgery Systems

New and advanced robotic surgery systems have improved clinical outcomes in a lot of ways. Robotic surgery is better than laproscopic surgery in a lot of ways, as laproscopic surgeries have a limited degree of flexibility, counterintuitive movements, low dexterity and chances of physical tremors. These issues have been addressed by robotic surgery systems quite well, and also include much better features with the integration of improved technology.

Surgeons are now provided with improved vision and precision. Further, patients experience shorter length of hospital stay and fewer pre-operative complications. Robotic surgery systems also ensure less human errors. These advantages are expected to further enhance the use of robotic surgery systems over conventional laproscopic surgery in the global market and provide more incremental opportunities for manufacturers of robotic surgery systems.

In many other ways, robotic surgery systems have been observed to be a more convenient option, which has proved to be efficient for patient health management. Throughout the last six or so months, SpaceX has been working diligently extending and updating its Boca Chica, Texas Starship processing plant, some portion of which has included structure different high sounds (otherwise called vehicle/vertical gathering manufactures or VIBs). Up until now, those structures have been measured unequivocally for Starship creation and are not even tall enough to permit Starships to be completely coordinated, rather than filling in as sounds for Starship tank segment get together.

The VAB SpaceX has been solely utilizing for the last four or so months is generally 45m (115 ft) tall, leaving simply enough freedom for Starship tank segments to be stacked by an outer crane on straightforward work stands. The Starship VAB is additionally wide enough for two boats to be at the same time stacked and furnished, a capacity SpaceX as of late exploited while building Starships SN4, SN5, and SN6. With a cone-shaped nose segment introduced, Starship alone will quantify some 50m (165 ft) from tail to tip over 70% as tall as a whole two-phase Falcon 9 or Falcon Heavy rocket. The boats Super Heavy supporter (first stage), be that as it may, is significantly, even bigger, and will require its own comparatively estimated creation offices.

Super Heavy supporters will without any help be similar tallness as a whole Falcon 9 or Heavy rocket as of now amazingly tall to the extent current orbital-class rockets go. Completely stacked, Starship and Super Heavy will be a mind-boggling 120m (~395 ft) tall roughly 25% short of the specialized meaning of a high rise. To manufacture rockets that huge, SpaceX will obviously need to construct some one of a kind offices particularly so given that Starships must be collected vertically.

While the current Starship VAB is without a doubt huge enough for SpaceX to start stacking generally 50% of a Super Heavy promoter at once, it would invalidate the point of having a VAB protecting the last gathering process from winds and climate.

To fabricate a high sound some 80m (260 ft) tall, however, SpaceX needed to lease a similarly measured crane, which it has spent the last two or so weeks progressively collecting and looking at. Presently, starting on July seventh, Super Heavy VAB establishment has at long last started. In light of flying photographs and recordings taken by LabPadre and RGV Aerial Photography in the course of the most recent couple of weeks, SpaceX or its contractor(s) have just amassed at any rate 12 extra prefab areas of the structure on head of the two currently introduced.

To finish the new VAB, about 32 of those prefab segments will probably be introduced, at last, delivering a high cove that is practically indistinguishable from the Starship VAB yet tall enough to completely stack Super Heavy supporters. In view of Starships VAB development plan, starting on January sixteenth and adequately complete by mid-March, SpaceX could be prepared to start creating the primary Super Heavy supporter models as right on time as September or October.

What do I need to know about asbestos in my home? – The Union Leader

You probably dont think about asbestos exposure very often. The EPA banned its use in 1989, and after all the news articles about how asbestos causes cancer and mesothelioma, who would want to use it at all?

But the ban was removed a few years later, and while contractors virtually never use asbestos in residential applications anymore, it remains in millions of homes, especially those built before the 1970s.

Although asbestos in the home usually doesnt pose a day-to-day danger, homeowners need to know the risks involved in disturbing it, the consequences of asbestos exposure and the proper asbestos removal methods.

Due to its heat resistance and strength, asbestos was used for a wide variety of construction purposes such as flooring, drywall and insulation. Basement pipe insulation and tape on old duct work are among the most common places youll find dangerous asbestos, because it breaks up over time and all of it is several decades old.

You cant see or smell asbestos fibers. The only way to be sure is to hire an environmental consulting firm or asbestos building inspector for asbestos testing. Theyll take fingernail-sized samples and test them in a laboratory. This work will cost between $100 and $700, depending on how extensive the testing is.

Some asbestos materials, such as flooring, are best left undisturbed. If you plan on doing work that involves breaking up, removing or drilling through those materials, though, call an asbestos professional. Asbestos removal is not federally regulated, but most states require licensing.

Deteriorating materials such as tape and pipe insulation should be replaced. A qualified professional will use specialized techniques to seal off the area and prevent any amount of asbestos from escaping. A typical project takes two people eight hours to complete.

Popcorn ceiling installed prior to 1990 is likely to have asbestos in it. Asbestos popcorn ceiling removal costs between $3 and $10 per square foot two to three times as much as standard popcorn ceiling removal.

Most asbestos removal jobs will cost between $1,000 and $3,000. More extensive jobs, such as a whole-house remediation, will be much more expensive, averaging between $15,000 and $30,000. Preparing the area and sealing it off from the outside makes up two-thirds of asbestos abatement cost.

Hiring asbestos removal contractors should be done carefully. Asbestos licensing and training regulations vary by state and locality.

Learn your local laws and verify that they have the appropriate licenses and, if necessary, the permits required for the job.

Construction and Preclinical Evaluation of 211At Labeled Anti-mesothelin Antibodies as Potential Targeted Alpha Therapy Drugs – DocWire News

This article was originally published here

Wang X, et al. J Radiat Res 2020.

ABSTRACT

Targeted alpha therapy (TAT) is a promising tumor therapy that can specifically transport particle to the vicinity of tumor cells while the normal cells are only slightly irradiated. Mesothelin is a highly promising molecular signature for many types of solid tumors including malignant mesothelioma, pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancer and lung adenocarcinoma etc., while the expression in normal human tissues are limited, thus making mesothelin a promising antigen for TAT. Previously we developed a theoretical model that could predict and optimize in vitro screening of potential TAT drugs. The aim of the study is construction and preclinical evaluation of 211At labeled anti-mesothelin antibodies as potential TAT drugs. Mesothelin expression of two tumor cell lines were confirmed by flow cytometry, and their radiosensitivities were also evaluated. We used two kinds of anti-mesothelin antibodies, ET210-6 and ET210-28, to construct TAT drugs. Then, radiochemical purity, stability in vitro, affinity of the conjugates and mesothelin expression level were assessed. The specific killing of mesothelin-positive cancer cells treated by 211At-ET210-28 and 211At-ET210-6 were studied via Cell Counting Kit-8 assay and colony formation assay. 211At-ET210-28 and 211At-ET210-6 revealed excellent affinity and stability in both phosphate buffer saline and fetal bovine serum environment. Radiolabeled antibody conjugates bound specifically to mesothelin-positive cells in vitro. Both 211At-ET210-28 and 211At-ET210-6 could specifically kill mesothelin-positive cells with negligible damages to mesothelin-negative cells. Our findings provide initial proof-of-concept for the potential use of 211At labeled ET210-28/ET210-6 anti-mesothelin antibody in specific killings of mesothelin-positive tumor cells.

Humans ‘prick’ their ears up just like cats and dogs when they hear interesting sounds, scientists find – Telegraph.co.uk

The cry of 'prick your ears up' is a familiar sound to day-dreaming children, but until now, no one believed humans really could move their ears like a dog or a cat.

However, scientists have now found we have more in common with our household pets when we thought.

Researchers from the Systems Neuroscience & Neurotechnology Unit in Germany have found for the first time that we make minute, unconscious movements of our ears that are directed towards the sound want to focus our attention on.

The study, published in the journal eLife, measuredelectrical signals in the muscles of the vestigial motor system in the human ear.

Despite the function to move the outer part of our ears evolved out of human ancestors 35 million years ago, the brain still sends signals to the ears to try and 'prick' them up when a sound is interesting enough.

NeuroscientistProfessor Danial Strauss, who led the research, said: "The electrical activity of the ear muscles indicates the direction in which the subject is focusing their auditory attention.

"It is very likely that humans still possess a rudimentary orientation system that tries to control the movement of the pinna (the visible outer part of the ear). Despite becoming vestigial about 25 million years ago, this system still exists as a 'neural fossil' within our brains".

The researchers were able to record the signals that control the tiny movements of the pinna using a technique known as surface electromyography (EMG).

They used sensors attached to the subject's skin, to detect the electrical activity of the muscles responsible for moving the pinna.

Subjects then had two types of attention tested, with automatic reaction when we hear unexpected sounds measured by exposing them to noise at random intervals while they silently reada monotonous text.

Goal-oriented attention also caused ears to 'prick'; to test this, the participants were asked to listen to a short story coming from one laterally positioned speaker, while ignoring a 'competing' story from a speaker located on the opposite side.

Professor Strauss said this research could help with the development of better hearing aids.

He explained: "These devices would be able to amplify the sounds that the wearer is trying to hear, while suppressing the noises that they are trying to ignore. The device would function in a way that reflects the user's auditory intention."

Last call: Las Vegas to shut bars down again Friday night to thwart coronavirus spike – USA TODAY

The Las Vegas Strip is slowly awakening after a nearly 80-day slumber due to the coronavirus crisis. USA TODAY

Heading to the newly reopened Las Vegas Strip?

The choice of places to grab a drink and eat, if you have a large party may shrink substantially beginning late Friday under new coronavirus restrictions announced by Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak late Thursday.

Bars are returning to Phase 1restrictions under the state's reopening plans at 11:59 p.m., PDT meaning those without food have to close except for curbsidepick up where applicable. Nevada is the latest in a series of states to pause or rollback reopening plans.

Restaurants must close their bar areas, even if they have tabletop video gaming machines, andcan no longer serve parties larger than six people inside. Restaurants can still serve alcohol but for now, you can't grab a drink at the bar while you wait for your table.

"We know that COVID-19 can easily spread when people are congregating for long periods of time, like inside a bar,'' Sisolak said in announcing the new measures. "In states where we have seen significant spikes, such as Arizona, Texas and Florida, they have all taken actions to roll back bars.Recently,Dr.Fauci, the U.S.'s top infectious-disease expert, advised that congregating in barsposesa significant riskand is one of the most dangerous things people could do right now. We must heed his advice."

Nevada is one of 19 states whose citizens being asked to quarantine upon arrival in the New York metro area and Chicago due to its recent surge in COVID-19 cases. According to the state health department, Nevada has more than 25,900 cases and 579 deaths. The Reno Gazette-Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported Friday that the state had more than 1,000 cases in the last 24 hours.

It's unclear how the restrictions will affect casino bar and restaurant operations, a staple of any visitor stay. Given the last-minute notice and Sisolak's pledge to provide more details Friday,Las Vegas' majorhotel casinos say they are still working out the details.

"We first saw the new guidelines last night, and we are reviewing them this morning,'' Caesars Entertainment spokesman Robert Jarrett said via e-mail.

A big concern, of course: The new restrictions will likely spark trip cancellations as the tourism hotspot struggles to get back on its feet after a nearly three-month closure. Casino hotels only reopened five weeks ago.

The topic of closing the bars again came up Thursday night at The Bar at Times Square, a popular piano bar at New York-New York Hotel & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip.. A guest who was there told USA TODAY the piano player told visitors to "enjoy it while you can'' since the bar would close Friday.

Asked by phone early Friday how the shutdown would affect guests at the luxe Bellagio, a customer service representative had to talk to a manager. She came back on the line and said the hotel is still awaiting clarification but added that visitors can still get drinks in the casino.

"Even though bars are closing, you can still have drinks while you're playing (casino games),'' she said.

This story is developing. Check back for updates.

Dream of Fight Island set to become reality at UFC 251 – Las Vegas Review-Journal

Fight Island has gone from an absurd idea tossed out by UFC president Dana White during a TMZ interview in April to a reality that will come to fruition on Saturday when it plays host to UFC 251.

Well, Danas come up with some great ideas over the years and I put the Fight Island concept at the very top of that list, UFC COO Lawrence Epstein said this week. Its been incredibly fun to take this thing from his vision to the reality of putting on four events at two weeks on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.

Finding the location was the first challenge for the UFC, which will continue doing domestic events in Las Vegas in August, but needed a place outside the U.S. where international fighters could travel. While the marketing and social media memes stoked visions of remote locales, the insane logistics of putting together this type of event dictated a need for an easily accessible airport, modern lodging and conveniences and infrastructure for broadcasting worldwide.

It just so happened the UFC has had a longstanding relationship with a government in Abu Dhabi that had a desire to show it could stage large-scale events and prove it is open for business for all sports and eventually, international tourists. Those officials were willing to not only welcome the events, but make a hefty financial investment to show it was capable of putting together such an elaborate spectacle in the midst of a pandemic.

The emirate secured and funded 22 charter flights from four hub cities across the world, Las Vegas, London, Sao Paulo and Moscow. Those boarding the flights bound for the safe zone on Yas Island had to arrive the night before the flight and pass the first of five coronavirus tests scheduled for each attendee, from fighters to corners to UFC staff, a group that totaled 630.

Inside that 10-mile safe zone, a room quarantine period is enforced at one of seven hotels until two negative tests are administered and then face coverings must be worn in all public areas and social distancing is enforced.

The area, which is closed to the public, includes a beach, a golf course, multiple training facilities and more than a dozen dining facilities.

There is also an arena where the fights will be held and an octagon set up on the beach that can be used for training, but has become more of a photo op due to the incredibly high temperatures.

There are three medical facilities and 17 medical personnel in the safe zone. UFC officials expect 3,300 COVID-19 tests to be administered throughout the process.

Were lucky to have a tremendous partner in Abu Dhabi that has helped us with their national airline, the hotels and the extensive testing protocols and the immigration-type issues involved with international travel, Epstein said. And then the Abu Dhabi ministry of health has got tremendous experience in dealing with COVID-19 testing. Theyre really a leader in the space, so its just been incredible to partner with them and its made it, frankly, a lot easier for us.

Epstein and White both said they have heard from just about every sports league to inquire about how theyve been able to put on eight domestic events already and are now set to host four international cards over the next two weeks while other leagues struggle to gain traction.

While putting on fight cards with no pushback from players associations or collective bargaining agreements gives the UFC an edge, they are more than willing to share.

We know we will do better when baseball and basketball and hockey and all the sports are up and running because there is a synergistic effect associated with getting promotion off other sports, in particular with our broadcast partners, Epstein said. So, whatever weve done, we consider it open source code and we are sharing with everybody because we want everybody in the sports and entertainment landscape to get back on their feet as soon as possible.

Saturdays pay-per-view event, headlined by a welterweight title fight between Jorge Masvidal and champion Kamaru Usman, will be followed by televised cards on Wednesday, July 18 and July 25.

Las Vegas Raiders: 4 things to expect from pass catchers in 2020 – Just Blog Baby

Henry Ruggs III leads all rookies in receiving yards

Raiders WR Henry Ruggs III (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

This achievement may require some wishful thinking but based on the expectation that Henry Ruggs III will be the Raiders number one receiver as of Week 1, it is a realistic one. Ruggs was never the number one receiver in his years at Alabama but was able to capitalize on his lesser targets with some huge averages.

Over three years, his average reception was 17.5 yards thanks to his incredible speed and quickness that let him turn a 5-yard slant in to a 50-yard touchdown. If his targets go up as expected, then his yardage totals should as well.

In 2019, 56 rookie receivers recorded at least one catch and Tennessee's AJ Brown led them all with 1,051 yards over 16 games. Hunter Renfrow incidentally was 7th and outperformed many of his fellow rookies who were drafted before him.

Since 2010, only eight rookie wide receivers have eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark so if Ruggs wants to achieve this milestone he will need to be at his best. He will also need to outperform the 34 other wide receivers drafted and the countless others who will catch passes as undrafted free agents.

In his three years at Alabama, Ruggs's highest total was just 740 yards over 14 games but as mentioned, he was not the number one target or WR with the Crimson Tide. This should not be the case in Las Vegas as he joins a team desperate for true number one receiver.

Leading all rookies in receiving yards may be an unfair expectation to place on Ruggs but with high draft picks comes high expectations.

OSHA reports finding greater compliance with COVID-19 safety rules – Las Vegas Review-Journal

Fifty out of 56 businesses passed a second check this week after receiving warnings for not complying with COVID-19 safety requirements, state officials said Thursday.

Nevadas Division of Industrial Relations Occupational Safety and Health Administration reported earlier this week that Southern Nevada businesses showed a 66 percent compliance rate with public mask-wearing mandates after Gov. Steve Sisolaks June 26 order.

That was an improvement from the 49 percent compliance rate OSHA reported last week.

Between Monday and Wednesday, OSHA officials visited 56 businesses that previously received notice for possible noncompliance with measures such as face covering and social distancing requirements, the agency said, and found an 89 percent compliance rate on the second go-round.

During each visit, officials made observations at the businesses and compared them with OSHA guidelines and the governors directives, Nevada Department of Business and Industry spokeswoman Teri Williams said.

That included checking to make sure physical distancing requirements were followed or enforced and that employees wore masks while interacting with customers and warned those customers that masks were required before entering.

Williams said officials also factored in the odds of spotting an employee or customer who may be exempt from mask requirements in their observations, based on a reasonable expectation and the specific circumstances at the business.

Businesses received a warning if OSHA officials found evidence of noncompliance during the first visit and information on possible penalties for continued problems, the agency said.

Penalties are assessed based on the violation and the situation but can reach up to $134,940 per violation if businesses are found to demonstrate a willful indifference to the health and safety of their employees.

If investigators find serious persistent violations, businesses can be fined up to $13,494 for each instance.

Since the initial observations began in late June, OSHA officials have found 85 percent compliance in Northern Nevada and 72 percent compliance in Southern Nevada over the course of 1,564 initial visits statewide.

Details of noncompliance investigations, such as business names and locations, are confidential, OSHA said, but can be released after the cases are formally closed.

Prayers Answered – The Herald

Story by Leann BurkePhotos by Marlena Sloss

Early afternoon sunlight shone through the stained glass windows of the new St. Mary Catholic Church building in Ireland as Pat Gress led his mother, the late Rita Gress, through the building she helped plan for and prayed about for decades.

As the pair entered the nave that late May day, Rita looked to the high altar a combination of the high altar and two side altars from the now closed St. Patrick Catholic Church in Corning and teared up.

Duane Gress takes his mother, Rita, on a tour led by his brother, Pat, not pictured, of the new St. Mary Catholic Church in Ireland on May 17. Rita was part of the original long-term planning committee for the new church and Pat was the construction manager. She had leukemia and was able to visit the new church weeks before she died.

Its just fantastic, she said of the whole church. I just cant believe it.

Im glad you like it, Pat said. You were instrumental in getting this thing going.

Pat managed construction on behalf of the church.

The congregation at St. Mary began discussing the possibility of building a new church about 40 years ago. The old building located at 2829 N. 500 W opened in 1905, and at that time, about 45 families attended the church. Today, the church is home to about 1,000 families, many of whom have been members for generations. The Gress family, for example, has been part of the congregation for about a century, and Rita was part of the early discussions about expanding.

When the first long-range planning committee formed in the 1970s, Rita joined and advocated for the construction of a new church building. Ultimately, the committee chose to expand the 1905 building and to begin saving for the construction of a new church down the line.

Then, in the early 2000s, discussion about building a new church picked up again. Rita eagerly took a role on that iteration of the long-range planning committee, as did her son-in-law, Steve Buechler. Steve attended Holy Family Catholic Church in Jasper before he married Ritas daughter, Margaret, and began attending St. Mary.

The 15-person committee spent hours talking to parishioners about what style they wanted the church to have traditional, country Catholic was the consensus and researching architects and designs. Part of their research included a structural study of the 1905 building, which revealed some issues that would have made the cost of remodeling that building about the same as building a new one. That, coupled with the knowledge that a remodel would mean losing that traditional, country look, led the committee to pursue building a new church.

We took a very serious approach, Steve said. We knew we were planning for the next 100 years of our parish.

The new church began to become a reality in 2017 when the parish launched the Building Our Future capital campaign to raise the $6 million needed for the project. As of March, the campaign had raised about $5.6 million.

Construction crews work on the pillars on the top of the new St. Mary Catholic Church in Ireland on Jan. 16. The new church was designed to look as similar as possible to the old church, seen in the background.

According to guidelines from the Catholic Diocese of Evansville, the campaign needed $4.8 million 80% of the total cost to break ground. That threshold was met by 2018, and construction crews broke ground that year. At last, the decades of research and planning were turning into something tangible.

St. Mary parishioners dedicated so many years to planning for their new church that when Evansvilles bishop, Joseph Siegel, dedicated the new building on June 28, he joked in his homily that the parishioners had been dreaming of their new church almost as long as the biblical Jews of Jesus time spent building the temple from which Jesus expelled merchants in the second chapter of The Gospel of John. According to the story which was the Gospel reading for the dedication Mass that biblical temple took 46 years to build.

The years of hard work and planning paid off, however. The final designs for the new church yielded a traditional country church that looks much like the old building, but will fit 700 per mass, with room for additional folding chairs if need be, rather than the 380 the 1905 building housed. It also includes several features the parishioners wanted, including an additional parking lot, a space inside the church building for offices, a cry/bridal room, a covered entrance and a narthex, a large open area before the nave where parishioners can gather before and after church services.

The builders did an amazing job of bringing our vision into reality, Steve said.

The wish list also included refurbishing the original nine stained-glass windows from the 1904 church for use in the new building, and the commissioning of 11 new windows. For that, the parish called on Mominee Studios of Evansville. The original windows were made according to the American Opalescent style following the technique developed by John La Farge, an artist at the forefront of the American Arts and Crafts Movement of the late 1800s, according to the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

When [St. Mary Church] was built in 1904, all the churches were using [that style], said Jules Mominee, owner of Mominee Studios.

To restore the nine old windows, Jules and members of his team spent most of a day carefully removing the century-old, intricately decorated windows some of which consisted of three glass panels and loading them into a truck for transport to the studio in Evansville. There, the team refurbished the windows to make them vibrant again.

Mominee Studios employee Nick Morgan assembles the St. Scholastica stained glass window in Evansville on Oct. 17. Mominee Studios worked on 26 windows for the new church, including designing and building 9 new windows. From the beginning of the design process to the installation of the final window, Mominee Studios spent two years on the project.

The artists also built the 11 new windows at the studio, following techniques almost identical to those used by La Farge in the late 1800s. If a single artist worked on one window from start to finish, Jules said, the process would take two months, but his team of six artists can complete a single window in two weeks, and they always work on groups of windows at the same time to make a project move along quickly.

Like the stained-glass windows, the high altar, too, took a long time to prepare for its place in the new church. Jim Buechlein, owner of Buechleins Kwik Strip & Custom Furniture & Design in Jasper, oversaw the removal of the three altars from St. Patrick in Corning three years ago and refurbished them into the ornate, gothic-style altar that is now the focal point in St. Marys nave.

It was no small task, but Jim who attends Precious Blood Catholic Church in Jasper and has built custom pieces for several local churches, including Precious Blood and St. Ferdinand was confident he could create a beautiful piece for the new church.

The process included sanding down and refinishing the altars before combining the three separate altars into a single high altar. The latter meant rebuilding some of the pieces before painting the entire structure white with milk paint, which is an architectural paint made from the milk protein casein mixed with lime, clay and earth pigments. Its a type of paint common to historic pieces.

All finished, Jim estimates the altar is worth about $1 million. He and his team installed the altar in late May.

It was like a sigh of relief, he said. It felt good to see it sitting in the church.

Jim Buechlein, left, of Buechlein's Kwik Strip & Custom Furniture & Design, hands a piece of the altar to Sam Wagner of Wagner Brothers Construction while they assemble the altar at the new St. Mary Catholic Church in Ireland on May 15. The altar was re-designed from three separate altars from a St. Patrick Parish Church in Corning that closed down.

Tom Wagner and a team of workers helped Jim install the altar. A lifelong member of St. Mary, Tom was excited to see the new church coming together and to be part of it.

It was time, Tom said of building a new church. Its going to be a lot better.

After about two years of construction, the new church building opened to parishioners on Sunday, June 28, with the Rite of Dedication led by Bishop Siegel. The pews filled with mask-clad parishioners who spread throughout the pews to socially distance and eagerly waited to anoint the halls of their new house of worship. Several local priests also attended to celebrate the event with St. Marys Father Joseph Effie Erbacher and the parish.

The dedication kicked off with the handing over of the building when representatives of the architect and general contractor presented plans for the building to Bishop Siegel. Then, Fr. Erbacher opened the doors to the nave, beginning the processional to the altar.

Enter the gates of the Lord with thanksgiving, his courts with songs of praise, Bishop Siegel said as Fr. Erbacher opened the doors.

In addition to the celebration of the eucharist, the dedication Mass also included several steps to consecrate the building and prepare it to house decades of worship. As soon as the bishop reached the altar, he performed the blessing and sprinkling of water where he blessed water before sprinkling it over the parishioners and the walls of the church. During the anointing of the altar and the walls of the church with sacred Chrism a consecrated oil used in certain sacraments the bishop spread Chrism over the Altar of Sacrifice before he and Fr. Erbacher anointed the walls of the church with the oil as well.

Pat participated in the anointing of the altar as one of two parishioners who wiped down the altar after it was anointed.

Im extremely happy to have been part of it. I almost teared up a few times, he said. Seeing people in there and knowing it is the first of hundreds of years of worshippers is an amazing feeling.

The bishop also blessed the altar with incense while deacons carried braziers with incense through the aisles to bless the parishioners and walls as well, and the candles surrounding the altar and throughout the church were lit ceremonially.

Bishop Joseph Siegel spreads holy water on The Altar of Sacrifice during the new St. Mary Catholic Church dedication in Ireland on June 28.

Toward the end of the dedication, Fr. Erbacher addressed his congregation.

It has been three years of faith, dedication and love, and I thank you all very much, he said.

Missing from the pews during the dedication was Rita. Despite the decades of prayer and intentional action she dedicated to making the new church a reality, she was not meant to attend Mass in the new building. She passed away a few weeks prior to the dedication. Her funeral Mass held June 29 was the first Mass Fr. Erbacher led in the new church.

Cindy Gress, Rita Gress' daughter-in-law, touches Rita's casket after speaking during her funeral Mass at the new St. Mary Catholic Church in Ireland on June 29.

The Gress family chose to wait to hold her funeral Mass until after the dedication because of how much the church meant to her and how active shed been in bringing the new building to fruition. In the last days of her life, the idea of having her funeral in the new building brought her peace, said her daughter, Carla Allbright of Mitchell.

Although Pat and the rest of his family had hoped Rita would live to see the new church building open, Rita didnt expect to herself, and she seemed at peace with that knowledge. As her tour of the nearly completed church came to an end that day in May, she looked around the nave with tears of joy in her eyes and a smile on her face.

When its all finished, she said, Ill see it from heaven.

Several visited sandbar party and tested positive for COVID-19 – Traverse City Record Eagle

RAPID CITY Health officials have identified the weekend-long Torch Lake sandbar party and a period of time at a local casino as possible exposure sites for the pandemic disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

Officials at the Health Department of Northwest Michigan on Friday announced several people who tested positive for COVID-19 indicated they participated in the parties at the Torch Lake sandbar during the Independence Day holiday weekend.

However, those infected could not identify everyone with whom they came into close contact as part of the case investigations, officials said.

"This situation reminds us of how important it is to take precautions such as avoiding large gatherings whenever possible especially without social distancing and masking," said Lisa Peacock, the department's health officer.

The possible exposure period at the Torch Lake sandbar is the duration of the holiday weekend. Anyone who attended the festivities there is advised to monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 and potentially seek testing.

With three law enforcement entities policing the party, Antrim County Sheriff Dan Beale said enforcing social distancing at the annual party that draws thousands wasn't possible.

"What do you expect to happen when you have that many people?" Beale said. "People have been cooped up for so long and individuals were willing to take the chance whether they would get sick or not."

The almost-certain presence of the virus was the reason Beale said the department did not have officers walking the sandbar to patrol like they have had in year's past.

Brandon Nichols, owner of Dockside Bar and Restaurant on Torch Lake, said his business was back open that day after being closed out of caution for extensive cleaning.

It came with a change, however, as he said his staff made an effort to sanitize and limit the restaurant's capacity, beyond what they've done so far this summer, that Saturday in particular.

"As far as the sandbar goes, we were worried about that coming into the summer," Nichols said. "There's really no way to stop that many people going down there."

Additionally, the Grand Traverse County Health Department announced a possible COVID-19 exposure at Turtle Creek Casino during the recent weekend.

Anyone at the blackjack tables at the casino in Williamsburg between 8 and 9:15 p.m. on July 5 should also monitor for COVID-19 symptoms and both seek testing and quarantine should any develop.

Casino security workers confirmed the guest who tested positive for the disease was temperature tested at the door and wore a mask for the duration of their visit.

"While exposure to our employees and guests is limited because of our mask requirements, plexi-shield precautions, social distancing, continual and deep cleaning, and maximized ventilation systems, we want to inform the public as soon as possible to ensure safety on everyone's behalf," said Michael Schrader, the casino's chief executive officer, in a released statement.

He said casino workers are working with health department officials for contact tracing.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced 612 new cases of COVID-19, the states most since May 20. On Wednesday it announced 610 cases.

MDHHS did not report any deaths within the last day for the second time in a week. The 15 deaths announced were through the process of a vital records review.

Just 35 deaths were announced this week, the lowest 7-day average of the pandemic, outside of those attributed to a vital records review.

Regionally, 11 cases were announced. There were four cases announced in Grand Traverse County, two in Emmet County and one in counties of Crawford, Manistee, Missaukee, Montmorency and Roscommon.

On the same day the Health Department announced community exposure sites at the Sandbar party, the Governor signed an executive order on Friday, reiterating a previous order that masks are required to be worn in enclosed public spaces in order to limit the spread of COVID-19. It also added the requirement to wear a mask in crowded outdoor areas.

For any business that is open to the public to refuse entry or service to people who refuse to wear a face covering, with limited exceptions. Businesses now must post signs at all entrances instructing customers of their legal obligation to wear a face covering while inside.

Similar orders have been filed by several city, county and state governments nationwide.

The Governor faced questions from reporters in a state press conference on Thursday criticizing the enforcement of the states prior mask order.

We do actually have penalties under the law, the problem of course is making sure that we are enforcing and have compliance, Whitmer said. That relies on assistance at the local level, and I think as we see our numbers continue to rise that locals are going to get more active in assisting on this front.

Nichols said he thought his restaurant would get pushback when the initial mandate went into effect, requiring patrons to wear masks until they reached their tables.

That's not been the case, he said.

"It's been really cool because everyone's kind of just doing their part," Nichols said. "Everybody has had a little bit of a wakeup call. We're kind of a bit in no-mans-land and everybody was like 'okay, it's real, we need to be safe, we need to protect ourselves and we need to protect other people."

The executive order takes effect at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, July 13.

The ‘second wave’ is driven by propaganda – The Highland County Press

By Dr. Ron PaulFormer CongressmanThe Ron Paul Institutehttp://ronpaulinstitute.org/

On July 2, Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued an executive order mandating the wearing of face masks across the state, whether indoors or outdoors, when six feet cannot be maintained between people. In the governors decree, he cited a rise in Covid-19 cases, a rise in test positivity and a rise in hospitalizations as justification to force people to cover their faces in public.

The move is not only a violation of the civil liberties of all Texans. Abbott may have based his executive order on inaccurate information about a rise in Covid cases due to the Texas State Department of Health Services changing the definition of what constitutes a Covid case.

Thanks goes to Collin County Judge Chris Hill for blowing the whistle on what appears to be a move in mid-May to redefine what was a Covid case to open the door to a massive increase all to match the mainstream media line that a second wave was on the way.

In a Commissioners Court hearing for Collin County on May 18, it was revealed that while previously the determination of a Covid case was a confirmed test result, the definition was suddenly changed to count probable cases as cases. At the same time, the threshold for determining probable was lowered to a ridiculous level.

As Judge Hill said at that May 18 meeting, If you have a subjective fever and you have a headache and you live in Collin County, you now meet the qualifications to be a probable COVID patient. It is remarkable how low the standard is now.

Even worse, once a probable case was determined based on possibly unrelated subjective criteria, up to 15 people in possible contact with that probable case were also listed as probable cases. And probable cases were considered cases.

Repeat that farce across Texas and is it any wonder there was a spike in cases?

Also, Governor Abbotts claim that hospitals were being over-run by Covid patients was refuted by the Houston hospital directors themselves, who said they were nowhere near actual capacity and in fact were about the same level as they were last year.

The basis for Abbotts unconstitutional executive order has been shown to be false. Will he admit his mistake?

It is encouraging to see so many local and county officials across Texas announcing they will refuse to enforce Governor Abbotts unconstitutional face mask order. Thankfully, the spirit of freedom and love of liberty is still alive in Texas.

The second wave is driven by propaganda. Across the country, Covid testing increased from about 150,000 to more than 700,000 per day. You cant drive through Houston without seeing a flurry of signs advertising Free Covid test! Results in 15 minutes! Last week, Reuters reported that tests shipped around the country by the federal government were contaminated.

Deaths from coronavirus even the deaths with coronavirus rather than deaths from coronavirus are down more than 90 percent since the peak in April. The decline in deaths continues. That means we are closer to the herd immunity that will finally kill this virus. Yet, Governor Abbott and others across the country see this as a reason to lock the country back down.
