Jul. 10--With COVID-19 infections accelerating, the majority of Latin America and Caribbean countries still closed to commercial travel, and Europe imposing travel restrictions, the tourism and aviation industry risks losing millions of jobs and seeing more airlines filing bankruptcy, two leading industry organizations say.

On Thursday, the International Air Transport Association and the World Travel & Tourism Council called on regional governments not to abandon the airline industry in the midst of the global coronavirus pandemic. They also reiterated demands for financial support for regional carriers, and a clear restart dates for commercial travel from regional governments.

"We need governments to support and strengthen the restart by quickly implementing the International Civil Aviation Organization's global guidelines for restoring air connectivity," said Alexandre de Juniac, director general and CEO of International Air Transport Association.

The push for Latin America and the Caribbean to reopen their airspace comes amid a resurgence of coronavirus infections, which have made the region the new epicenter of the deadly respiratory disease with at least 100,000 new cases being registered a day, the Pan American Health Organization said this week.

Fearing that the number of new cases will not go down for several weeks, many governments have pushed back restarting domestic and international air travel, which tourism and aviation experts say will not help their industries' recovery.

"This pandemic is affecting five times what was affected in the [2008] financial crisis, which is absolutely traumatic," said Maribel Rodriguez, a senior vice president for the World Travel & Tourism Council.

Rodriguez, who has been advocating for the removal of travel restrictions, said the tourism-dependent Caribbean risks losing anywhere between 1.6 million and 2 million tourism-related jobs, while Latin America could lose as many as 6.1 million.

Peter Cerd, the International Air Transport Association's regional vice-president for the Americas, said that in the last two weeks several regional carriers have applied for financial restructuring under Chapter 11, and many more could do the same.

"The impact the virus is having on the air transportation system is exacerbated by the uncertainty of the dates for the reopening of the operations in some countries coupled with the lack of clear measures to support the sector," Cerd said. "This combination is jeopardizing thousands of jobs and contributions to the [gross domestic produce] in our region."

In March, as the virus began to spread, most countries in the Americas quickly responded by shutting down their land, sea and air borders. In some cases, not even stranded nationals were allowed to return.

The decision undoubtedly bought time and allowed nations to prepare their health systems to confront COVID-19. But it also decimated economies as countries closed schools, imposed 24-hour lockdowns and grounded commercial flights.

Last month, several countries in the Caribbean, where the virus has been mostly contained in the former British colonies, began reopening their airspace. But the majority of borders remain closed in South and Central America, where leaders are continuing to see climbing infections and deaths.

Cerd said that globally the aviation industry is expected to suffer a net loss of $84.3 billion this year. For Latin America and Caribbean airlines, where there has been a 98.1 percent drop in demand for air travel, the expected loss for airlines is $4 billion.

"For Latin America we now predict that $98 billion of GDP supported by air transport is at risk along with 4.1 million jobs," Cerd said. "We are expecting revenue losses of between 52 to 81 percent as compared to 2019 in the many markets."

A big chunk of that will come from the currently cut off trans-Atlantic market, a key revenue earner for many airlines in the region.

Last week, the European Union finalized a list of countries whose health situation was deemed safe enough to allow residents to enter the bloc after it reopened its air space.

Only Canada and Uruguay made the cut in the Americas region, while the United Kingdom came up with its own list. The UK's list consists of its overseas territories and former colonies in the Caribbean.

"Even though the list is reviewed every two weeks, the continued border closures will disproportionately hit airlines based in Latin America and the Caribbean," Cerd said. "Each month the EU remains closed translates into a net loss of about $300 million in airline ticket revenues generated by Latin America and Caribbean."

The continued travel restrictions, both by the European Union and countries in the region, he added, "will not help the badly needed restart process."

The decision to reopen borders is a tricky one, and one PAHO has said should be guided by data and a country's ability to quickly respond to a spike in new infections. Citing the fact that the industry has operated more than 800 repatriation flights in the region since March, Cerd said that there is "no scientific evidence aviation has been a vector of the virus."

The CDC has advised that air travel does increase a person's risk of getting COVID-19 because of the cramped conditions on planes, but notes that on-board filtration systems make it harder for viruses to spread. Caribbean nations that have reopened borders to outside travel have all reported seeing new infections attributed to imported cases, which is what led most to suspend air travel in March.

"We knew that the inevitable result would be travel-related incidents of the virus entering our territory," U.S. Virgin Islands Governor Albert Bryan Jr. said last month after cases went up following the reopening of the airspace and hotels to tourists.

Still, the International Air Transport Association is insisting that as Latin America continues to be the epicenter of COVID-19 infections, the projections for the aviation industry are getting worse by the day, putting it and the region at a disadvantage compared to other markets around the world.

"Latin America and the Caribbean simply lack viable alternatives such as roads or railroads. Therefore aviation must be allowed to resume as quickly as possible," Cerd said.

He added that the necessary guidelines on how aviation could function without becoming a vector to the spread of COVID-19 are outlined in the International Civil Aviation Organization's guidelines.

"The protocols have been devised with both medical and scientific knowledge and clearly spell out how aviation could once again safely fulfill its role as a catalyst for the social, economic development of the region," said Cerd. "However, too many governments are dragging their feet in terms of implementation."

Cerd said this week, the airlines' trade association met with Colombian President Ivn Duque Mrquez to ask for a specific restart date for domestic operations so airlines can have planning certainty. The country instead is proposing test flights, which the association said are not enough, and urged for a Sept. 1 date for the commencement of international air flights.

Ecuador, he said, has shown leadership in the restart of flights in the region but the ministry of transport's decision to postpone a request to remove a 14-day quarantine for travelers is hurting travel.

"We are beginning to see that even with the restart of air travel in Ecuador, people are beginning to stop flying there because of the quarantine measures," Cerd said. "We understand the sanitary situation in the country but we hope the Ecuadoran government will listen to the industry and lift the quarantine as soon as possible."

He also said the Mexican government, which never closed its airports, is reviewing their request for relief measures for airlines. In Brazil, the Lower House has approved an extension of refunds in order to stimulate travel and has terminated the $18 international departure tax. The measure must now be voted by the Senate.

"The situation was already difficult coming into the year in Latin America with social, economic, political unrest. It was already going to be a challenging year for the industry; we were hoping to make a small profit as an industry in Latin America," Cerd said. "Obviously that has now dissipated with the COVID crisis and we're now going into the fourth month with many of our countries being closed, the EU imposing travel restrictions for the vast majority of countries in Latin America and obviously, this is having a huge effect on the Latin American carriers."

It is not the end of the world for travel lovers deprived of an escape to elsewhere during the pandemic.

Perhaps you are an urban explorer, nature lover or foodie?

A profusion of new virtual experiences in every genre now lies at the end of an Internet connection.

These streamlined private tours of an hour or so are devised to keep globetrotters on the go while tour guides keep their jobs.

Ms Sara Cooke, director of communications for Vancouver-based ToursByLocals, says: "A virtual tour is a reminder that we can still have a shared experience with people around the world, even while we're confined to home.

"You can 'travel to Normandy' with people you love and miss."

Though there are limits to immersiveness on a virtual jaunt, online wandering is a fresh stream of revenue and will possibly remain a post-pandemic trend.

Global travel companies Airbnb, Viator, ToursByLocals, Withlocals and even Japan's indie Craft Tabby are among players who pivoted to these online offerings around April or May.

Since Airbnb launched its Online Experiences in April, bookings in Singapore have grown almost sevenfold, with food and drink the most popular category here and globally. About 600 experiences have debuted on the platform.

The trend is fed by the unabated desire to travel - safely.

Multi-currency wallet platform YouTrip, which recently surveyed 6,000 Singaporeans in its Travel Intent Survey, found that seven in 10 still desire to travel this year.

Forty per cent are willing to visit Covid-19 hot spots next year - compared with 15 per cent this year - a hopeful signal of the gradual recovery of travel.

Meanwhile, TripAdvisor found that more than two-thirds of travellers are already thinking of where they want to travel to next.

And, while cities were previously popular, the TripAdvisor study found that off-the-beaten-track destinations will be favoured after all this is over.

But even if islands or blissfully remote places become the post-coronavirus default, cities are certainly safe for virtual travellers right now.

Indeed, California-based Viator's top five online tours are all set in cities, except for Tuscany. Its Jack The Ripper Murder Mystery tour takes visitors back to the Victorian-era London of 1888.

Choices are increasing and themes encompass animals, art, baking, cocktails, dance, family, movies, social impact, wellness and more.

Take Airbnb, for example, which lets animal enthusiasts meet rescued mini horses that are therapy animals in the United States.

What about street art in Buenos Aires or Delhi? Or cultivate optimism with an American Olympian and try laughter yoga in Portugal.

This month, the company started a collection of online culinary experiences that include four from Singapore. One new host is chef Malcolm Lee of Michelin-starred Peranakan restaurant Candlenut.

Real tours are multi-sensory and immersive, so guides who lead virtual tours have to work harder and more creatively.

Mr Lee Xian Jie, 30, a partner in Craft Tabby, which specialises in hidden Kyoto sights, says: "Both guide and participant are peering through a small window to the other's world, so it is a real challenge to break down that barrier."

He says the key is to pay close attention to the faces of participants "so that any quizzical look or flash of interest in the eyes" gets a response.

For a flower-hunting experience, he can tell when guests want to peer closely at a flower for longer or seem interested in how the flower has influenced haiku poets.

To heighten the immersive factor, guides may use music, quizzes and a moving dashcam. Guests can opt to cook alongside their guides on the other side of the screen, because ingredient lists can be sent ahead of time for Arabic coffee, for instance.

Offline or online, the most successful guides have engaging personalities and research fully.

Mr Parin Mehta, director (Asia-Pacific) of Airbnb Experiences, says: "Guests interact with dynamic hosts who share their passions and provide unique insider access to local cultures and activities. These are real people making real connections in real time."

Companies also book experiences. "The interactive nature of the Online Experiences, conducted from home, meets a real need for companies looking to build rapport and collaboration in remote teams."

The lower fee is also appealing - apart from not paying airfare.

Ms Cooke of ToursByLocals says: "Rates are much lower than in-person private tours. The tours run on average from US$40 (S$56) to US$75 total for typically up to six users, and usually run 11/2 hours. A typical private tour would be three hours and cost closer to US$300."

Online experiences are shorter - to steer clear of video-conferencing fatigue. Tours are often 45 to 90 minutes, except for longer cooking classes.

For Russophile Fen Chia, 36, virtual travel ticks many boxes. She tuned in for a Russian breakfast pancake class in a dacha, or countryside summer house.

She is curious about dacha culture and it was her first glimpse of one.

"Virtual tours are particularly valuable for experiences which are not easily available to the casual traveller, even during normal circumstances," the tech-sector publicist says.

"A cooking class set in a dacha is one example. I would be equally interested in a virtual visit to a Soviet-era sanatorium in the Caucasus or one of the hard-to-access Russian republics.

"All it takes is a good Internet connection, video-cam and command of English on the part of the host."

Although many paid virtual tours were forged in a sombre time, they may become a significant trend even when it is safe to venture out again.

Travel companies have noticed positive reviews. Going virtual can be a teaser for a future trip or a time to plan dream itineraries with a local expert. It can even be an add-on after a trip.

Ms Cooke from ToursByLocals says: "For people for whom finances, or perhaps health and mobility are a challenge, a virtual tour can give them a window into a different culture and a chance to spend time making a connection with a place that it's not possible for them to travel to."

Virtual reality - the tech-enabled sibling of virtual tours - can significantly transform how people travel.

The National Geographic magazine reported: "Virtual reality may even expand travel opportunities in years to come, as researchers focus their work on experiences that are expensive, dangerous, rare or even impossible in the real world.

"Bucket-list items such as whale-watching or seeing the Sistine Chapel could become accessible to everyone, with all the thrills, but very few of the environmental impacts."

Already, some guides like Russian Anna Belousova, 30, are expanding their online portfolio. From March, she began to craft experiences focused on the Red Square, Moscow space exploration and cooking.

Next, she is thinking about the trendy Red October art cluster, Depo Food Mall, and the hidden streets and lanes downtown.

She reflects: "My virtual tours and online cooking classes help me greatly to stay on track, to get a sense of professional purpose during these dark times, to have a source of income and to get such vital motivation that I can tackle the day, since I've always been such a workaholic in a positive way - tour guiding is my passion and joy."

Travel + Leisure names Vermont resort one of the best in the world – The Boston Globe

Vacations and getaways have been shelved by many apprehensive travelers due to COVID-19, but for those still looking for local trips, theres a spot of good news. According to the readers of Travel + Leisure magazine, five of the top 15 resort hotels in the continental United States are located in New England. Rabbit Hill Inn, located in Lower Waterford, Vt., was a big winner in the travel glossys annual reader poll.

Rabbit Hill Inn, which labels itself as a Deliciously romantic Vermont experience, was named the top resort hotel in the Northeast, the number three resort in the country, and the number 27 resort hotel in the world. In its write-up of the inn, Travel + Leisure editors said The 19-room lodge has everything readers want from a luxe, quintessentially New England stay. Its the second year in a row that Rabbit Hill has earned the top spot on the list.

Also scoring high was perpetual favorite Twin Farms in Barnard, Vt. It was named the second best resort in the Northeast, number eight in the United States, and 93 in the world. Verdant farmland and woods surround Twin Farms, in central Vermont, where modern life can feel like a distant memory, the magazine wrote.

While New England resort hotels fared well, Bostons city hotels were primarily snubbed in the survey, which was completed before the coronavirus pandemic nearly shutdown the travel industry. The Row at Assembly Square in Somerville landed in the number five spot on the list of the top 15 US city hotels. Unlike previous years, there was no list ranking Boston hotels. Boston also missed the list of the top cities in the United States. (Charleston, S.C., was ranked top by Travel + Leisure readers.)

In addition to Rabbit Hill Inn and Twin Farms, the Chanler at Cliff Walk in Newport, Wequassett Resort & Golf Club in Harwich, and the Vanderbilt, Auberge Resorts Collection in Newport also placed in the top 15 resort hotels in the continental United States.

Getting Back On The Road: 9 Things To Plan For As Travel Resumes – Hospitality Net

Around the world, travel restrictions are gradually being eased. In recent weeks, a number of countries have allowed domestic travel to resume. Some have even restarted - or announced plans to restart - international travel through the formation of "travel bubbles" and "travel corridors", where borders are only being opened only to visitors from certain countries.

Concurrently, a May poll from the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) found that more than half of its member companies have plans to resume travel in the near future.

While these signs of recovery are encouraging, the reality is that the travel landscape remains starkly different from what it was a few months ago. As countries continue to grapple with controlling spread of the virus, in many ways the travel experience will probably be less seamless than it was before the pandemic. Business trips will require greater planning and preparation, both on the part of companies and their traveling employees. Here are some things to consider:

1. Quarantine requirements - While countries are allowing travel to gradually resume, it's likely that some quarantine requirements will remain in place, at least in the near term.

For example, under the Singapore-China "fast-lane" arrangement announced last month, travelers will still need to remain isolated for one or two days at their destination while awaiting their covid-19 test results.

2. Safety measures at your destination - Cities around the world have implemented a raft of measures to curb community spread of the virus. These include requiring people to wear masks, limiting the operations of restaurants and suspending some public transport services. Some restrictions may only apply to visitors.

Even a seasoned traveler who has visited a destination multiple times in the past may need to do a little extra planning to figure out things like transport and meals, and ensure they have packed essential items like masks so they can comply with local regulations.

3. Safety requirements at airports and on flights - Several countries and airlines have also made it mandatory for passengers to wear masks at the airport and on-board flights, so it's a good idea to keep one handy.

On the flip-side, while you may decide you want to wear a mask, you could find yourself on board a flight where the airline can't enforce that other passengers do so.

4. Access to quality medical assistance - Standards of healthcare and medical facilities can vary widely from one country to the next, and even between cities in the same country. Healthcare resources in some cities could be overwhelmed due to the coronavirus, making it difficult to get access to medical assistance should you need it. Again, it's advisable to do your research prior to traveling.

Companies can also look into solutions offered by organizations like International SOS that specialize in medical and travel security services, and can provide on-site medical assistance to travelers.

5. Insurance - A number of travel insurance providers are no longer covering events arising from the COVID-19 outbreak, such as flight cancellations and medical assistance, for policies issued after a certain date. Contact your insurance provider to find out what your policy does and does not cover.

6. Flight options - Many airlines are still operating significantly reduced schedules due to lower demand and government restrictions, so it's a good idea to understand what your options are if you need to get out in a hurry. For example, the United States Department of Transportation recently announced that Chinese passenger air carriers will be permitted to operate just two flights per week to the U.S.

7. Accommodation options - Most of the major hotel chains have announced initiatives to increase the level of cleanliness and hygiene at their properties, including thoroughly cleaning guest rooms and public spaces with recommended cleaning agents, setting up hand-sanitizing stations, and providing contactless check-in and check-out.

However, many properties across the globe remain closed, and depending on where you're traveling to, the only available options may be properties where cleanliness protocols might not be as stringent.

8. Political/civil situation - In some places, the lockdowns and other safety measures imposed by governments have resulted in civil unrest and protests. Travelers should keep on top of the news so they can stay out of harm's way.

World’s first cargo Airbus A380 is now on Covid-19 missions – CNN

(CNN) It looks like the ultimate in Covid-era luxury: a huge passenger jet with economy seats removed and acres of space to stretch out your legs.

While this temporary reconfiguration of an Airbus A380 is related to coronavirus, it's not, however, about social distancing.

Portuguese charter operator Hi Fly has removed most of the seats from its sole A380 in order to make way for more cargo, making it the world's first A380 to be converted for freight.

Hi Fly tells CNN that it's using its newly converted A380 to transport medical and protective equipment to aid the fight against Covid-19, with its most recent destinations being Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, Montreal in Canada, and Tianjin and Wuhan in China.

Popular with air travelers but expensive to operate, the gigantic double-decker craft with its 853-passenger maximum capacity was simply "too big for current needs," John Grant of AG Aviation Consultants told CNN Travel in March.

Hi Fly took over its Airbus A380-800 from Singapore Airlines, retaining its original interior and 471-seat configuration.

With the economy seats removed (business and first-class remain), Hi Fly can carry freight across all three levels of the aircraft.

The international transport of critical medical goods has been crucial to supporting first responders around the world.

"Air cargo solutions have never been more important than they are now to global health services. Currently, our international teams dispatch multiple flights daily to ensure that vital medical supplies protect those in need," Tatyana Arslanova, executive operating officer for Moscow-based Air Bridge Cargo, told CNN Travel in May.

Unlike the 747, however, there's never been a freighter version of the A380, although Airbus did at one time have plans for one.

That freighter project was canceled. The A380 suffered from disappointing initial sales and the superjumbo's design -- with its emphasis on volume -- meant that it made more economic sense to load up with relatively light passengers, rather than weighty cargo.

However, these unprecedented times have meant that airlines have been forced to be flexible and to consider how best to utilize the craft in their fleet.

Perhaps Hi Fly's A380 won't be the first superjumbo to get a second chance at the high life.

The CS has also taken the following steps, which are all effective from 1 July 2020:

The Protocols (which we shall discuss in detail in the second part of this series) aim to achieve (environmentally and socially responsible) institutional, operational and staff preparedness to ensure service provision meets required health and safety guidelines aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19.

The stamp will also allow travellers to recognise Kenya as a safe destination once it re-opens and help revive the industry, which has lost approximately KES 80 billion to date and has been one of the worst hit globally following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Through the above, the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife is charting one of the most progressive steps in the region to support the revival of the industry to ensure the world and travellers remain connected to Kenya, even during the current COVID-19 lockdown period when there is restricted movement globally.

The above initiatives are particularly relevant as Kenya counts down to 15 July 2020 and 1 August 2020 when it opens its borders to tourists locally and globally, respectively, pursuant to the Presidents directive in his press statement of 6 July 2020.

The 10 most deadly holiday destinations in the world for shark attacks – Mirror Online

In previous years, millions of Brits have flocked abroad in the pursuit of some sun-soaked relaxation on golden sands.

But some holiday hotspots are among some of the most dangerous place in the world for shark attacks.

Thankfully only a small number of terrifying incidents occur every year, with an even tinier number resulting in fatalities.

Now as travel restrictions loosen and Brits prepare to flock abroad for a beach holiday, we've examined the statistics.

Many of the dangerous incidents took place in destinations popular with holidaymakers, including Australia, the US and the Bahama Islands.

Here, we reveal where tourists are most at risk from an unprovoked shark attack, with data from the International Shark Attack File database at the Florida Museum of Natural History, since records began in 1580.

1. United States (1,483)

This US easily leads in the number of shark attacks, with 1,483 incidents recorded.

Last year, there were 41 unprovoked attacks more than the rest of the world combined.

This was an increase from 32 the previous year.

An unprovoked attack is defined as an incident where it occurs in the sharks natural habitat with no human provocation of the shark, like trying to touch it or feed it.

Of those 41 American attacks, a whopping 21 were in the Sunshine state: Florida, where millions of Brits flock every year.

Unprovoked shark attacks also occurred in Hawaii (9), California (3), and North Carolina (3), with single incidents in Georgia, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and the Virgin Islands.

In May this year, a surfer was mauled to death in a shark attack off a northern California beach.

Tragic Ben Kelly had been surfing off Manresa State Beach in Monterey Bay when he was killed less than a hundred yards away from the shore.

Last May, ThomasSmiley, 65, was dragged underwater whilst swimming on a family holiday in Hawaii.

By the time the advanced diver had been hauled from the water, his left leg had been severed at the knee.

Beaches across Australia have seen a huge amount of tragedy, with 11 attacks recorded in 2019.

In a graphic attack just six days ago, a 36-year-old man died after being attacked by a shark at a popular beach in tourist hotspot Fraser Island.

Local media reports that he had been spearfishing when he was bitten on the leg around 2pm on Saturday.

In 2018, tourist Justine Barwick was bitten whilst snorkelling around the notorious Cid Harbour, off Whitsunday Island.

The region, near the Great Barrier Reef, has developed a reputation for attacks.

Tragically, 12-year-old Hannah Papps lost a leg after another attack the following day, whilst swimming.

In 2019, Brit Alistair Raddon survived a horrific attack in one of Australia's most notorious stretches of water.

The 28-year-old's foot was bitten off as he snorkelled with pal Danny Maggs off the country's north-east coast, who suffered leg injuries.

But the pair luckily escaped after managing to make it back to their tour boat, which rushed them ashore before they were flown to hospital.

Thousands of Brits jet off to South Africa for a holiday every year.

A terrifying 255 unprovoked shark attacks have been recorded at the top holiday destination.

But last year, only one attack was recorded, with ecologists reporting a low number of sightings.

The Cape of Good Hope and the city of Cape Town have been dubbed the "great white capital of the world".

In 2014 a 68-year-old Austrian tourist was killed by asharkwhile enjoying a swim at at Second Beach

Liya Sibili, 22, died on two years earlier on Christmas Day after being dragged away by asharkin waist-deep water.

No unprovoked attacks were recorded in Brazil last year, in good news for holidaymakers.

In 2012, the body of Tiago Jose de Oliveira da Silva, 18, was found floating in the sea just south of Recife, in north-eastern Brazil.

At the time, the BBC reports that his death was the 56th shark attack in Recife in 20 years.

A startling 21 of those were sadly fatal, a death rate of about 37%.

Most of these attacks are committed by two species - bull sharks and tiger sharks- but recent migration patterns may explain the recent drop.

No new attacks were recorded last year in this popular holiday spot.

But in an extraordinary show of strength, a 60-year-old surfer fought off a 10ft great white shark that bit his arm, in February 2020.

Nick Minogue was viciously attacked at Pauanui Beach, east of Auckland but lived to tell the tale.

He told TheNewZealandHerald: "I actually shouted at it 'f*** off!' and went to punch it in the eye and missed.

"Then I pulled my fist back and shouted 'f*** off!' again and got it right smack bang in the eye.

"It's quite a big eye, about three knuckles across, and its eye kind of looked up and rolled up.

"It was a grey shark with a white bottom, probably a great white. It was a big head and jaw. I kind of sat up in shock and decided to hit it. That was the only thing to do.

"In between the two punches it crunched down a bit more on the board and then disengaged its teeth, got its jaws off and then I got brushed by the dorsal fin and the tail fin and [it] swam off."

Most incidents occur whilst people are surfing or swimming bu the total number of attacks overall is low, considering how popular those activities are.

The FloridaMuseum stresses that "the total number of unprovoked shark attacks worldwide is extremely low, given the number of people participating in aquatic recreation each year.

"Fatality rates have declined for decades, reflecting advances in beach safety, medical treatment, and public awareness.

"This underscores the importance of global efforts to improve ocean rescue, medical care, and shark education."

People do it all the time now. The phenomenon began in Australia about 40 years ago, crossed to America, and now its common across all age groups in the entire English-speaking world.

Now imagine a scenario where there are interplanetary settlements on other planets. Where there are isolated communities of humans. Where immigrants from Earth arrive in colonies having been in space for many years.

In a future era of generations-long, one-way interstellar space travel will humans be able to communicate with each other?

Colonists both new and old may struggle to understand one another, while messages sent to and received from those back home on Earth could quickly dwindle into meaninglessness.

Theyre the questions explored in anew paperpublished in Acta Futura, the journal of the European Space Agencys Advanced Concepts Team.

Languages drift apart as communities grow more isolated from each other, say the authors, so not only will spoken language quickly change among colonists in an isolated interplanetary settlement, but also among passengers on arriving spacecraft.

Interplanetary colonists both new and old may struggle to understand one another.

If youre on this vessel for 10 generations, new concepts will emerge, new social issues will come up, and people will create ways of talking about them and these will become the vocabulary particular to the ship, said Andrew McKenzie, Associate Professor of linguistics at the University of Kansas, who co-wrote Language Development During Interstellar Travel with Jeffrey Punske, assistant professor of linguistics at Southern Illinois University.

About 200 years is long enough for significant changes to occur if the crew is physically and socially disconnected from Earth, say the authors. Possibly just one lifetime if the community is very small. They extrapolate from examples on Earth; Polynesian settlement across the southern Pacific from 1500-1800, the settling of English speakers in isolated colonies in New Zealand in the 1800s, and the development of a unique Texan-German dialect in Texas over three generations up until World War 1.

People on Earth might never know about these new words unless theres a reason to tell them, and the further away you get, the less youre going to talk to people back home, said McKenzie. Generations will pass and there wont be anyone in particular on Earth for these interstellar travellers to talk to. Theres not much you want to tell them, because theyll only find out years later, and then you'll hear back from them years after that.

For years-long voyages, dialects will likely merge. For a generations-long mission, new dialects and even anew language could solidify.

Interstellar travelers and colonists individual connections to Earth could fairly quickly wane. If we have Earth English and vessel English, and they diverge over the years, you have to learn a little Earth English to send messages back, or to read the instruction manuals and information that came with the ship, said McKenzie, in what was an English-centric study merely to highlight some broad concepts.

Moreover, language back on Earth will also have changed, so the language of communication between Earth-bound humans and those in colonies will become an archaic form of language used only for that purpose. Will anyone want or need to have to learn how to communicate with people on Earth? Or vice versa?

The authors suggest older forms of English may be retained purely for ritualistic or religious use.

They also recommend that the crew of an arriving vessel in a colony may want to learn the local language before arrival to prevent discrimination.Every new vessel will essentially offload linguistic immigrants to a foreign land, they write. Will they be discriminated against until their children and grandchildren learn the local language?

So next time you look up at the stars bear in mind that one day there could one day be a spacecraft up there containing humans desperately trying to learn to make their every utterance sound like a question.

NASA's next Mars rover has been attached to its rocket ride.

The Mars rover Perseverance was stacked atop its United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket Tuesday (July 7) at Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, a huge milestone ahead of the mission's planned July 30 launch.

"I have seen my fair share of spacecraft being lifted onto rockets," John McNamee, project manager for Perseverance's mission, which is known as Mars 2020, said in a statement Thursday (July 9).

"But this one is special, because there are so many people who contributed to this moment," said McNamee, who's based at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. "To each one of them I want to say, We got here together, and we'll make it to Mars the same way."

A 60-ton hoist on the roof of the Vertical Integration Facility (VIF), at Cape Canaveral's Space Launch Complex 41, lifted the protective payload fairing containing Perseverance and its associated hardware 129 feet (39 meters) high on Tuesday, placing it on top of the Atlas V, NASA officials said. Engineers then made the required physical and electrical connections between the spacecraft and the rocket.

The mating milestone ushers in the final phase of Mars 2020 prelaunch testing, which can assess the rover and rocket both separately and together. The duo will remain based at the VIF until July 28, when they'll travel by rail to the launch pad, making the 1,800-foot (550 m) journey in about 40 minutes, NASA officials said.

Perseverance doesn't have to get off the ground on July 30; the $2.7 billion mission's launch window runs through Aug. 15. (That window was once considerably wider. It originally opened on July 17, but several processing issues pushed the target date back 13 days.)

Whenever Perseverance launches this summer, it will land on Feb. 18, 2021, inside Mars' Jezero Crater. The 28-mile-wide (45 kilometers) Jezero contained a lake and a river delta in the ancient past, and the car-sized robot will search the area for signs of long-dead life.

Perseverance will do a variety of other work as well, from characterizing Jezero's geology to hunting for subsurface water ice to testing out gear that generates oxygen from Mars' thin, carbon dioxide-dominated atmosphere. The six-wheeled rover will also collect and cache several dozen samples, which will be recovered and returned to Earth, perhaps as early as 2031, by a joint NASA-European Space Agency campaign.

And Perseverance will have some company during the long flight to Mars: a 4-lb. (1.8 kilograms) helicopter named Ingenuity, which is attached to the rover's belly. If all goes according to plan, Ingenuity will make a few short test flights in the Red Planet's skies, potentially paving the way for extensive aerial exploration by future Martian rotorcraft.

Self-drive scooter rental is a decade-old business in India. It was primarily used in tourist hotspots such as Goa, where hotels would rent out 20-30 scooters per day to customers. However, even at a smaller scale, operators faced problems such as inability to monitor the usage of vehicles, driver behaviour, frequent theft, etc.

Today, scooter rental companies have expanded their fleets to thousands of scooters, and consumer use cases range from daily work commute and chores to food delivery, leisure activities, tourism etc. The key enabler for this rapid expansion has been widespread IoT adoption by two-wheeler fleet operators.

A commuters journey on a self-drive two-wheeler rental can be broken down in 4 parts - 1) searching for available scooters 2) starting the ride 3) the ride experience, and 4) ending the ride. Each part has been optimised and streamlined using IoT.

Consumers locate available scooters on an app, and can also view features such as fuel level, presence of helmet, sanitisation status etc on the same app. Once they locate the scooter, they can start the ride within 10 seconds by scanning a QR code, which limits physical touchpoints in the overall commute. The ride experience is further optimised by real-time fuel status alerts, geo-fencing alerts, and over-speeding alerts on the app.

Finally, commuters can end the ride virtually using the app. The app also detects if the helmet has been returned to the boot, and if the boot has been locked. The consumer is then accurately charged based on this exact usage of the service.

As a function of changing priorities/commute patterns due to COVID-19, companies have utilised IoT to change their business models to enhance the safety of their services.

Many players have launched long-term rental packages for consumers, with an option of home delivery of scooters by the fleet executive (FEs). In this scenario, consumers can pick up their scooter at any point post-delivery, and then use it for months before returning.

The key enablers for the launch of this model are IoT-enabled features such as keyless transfer, virtual daily updates on vehicle health, usage during rentals, and timely servicing alerts based on predictive maintenance algorithms etc.

Customers have the flexibility to choose their scooter based on last sanitised status now available on scooter rental apps. The app would also send alerts whenever commuters venture near red zones.

The IoT device is currently installed separately by operators on the scooter. But going forward, many OEMs are considering integrating into the scooter. This will transfer the responsibility of manufacturing and designing these devices to the OEM, and cut costs for the operator significantly.

Many players are also considering a switch to e-scooters to optimise their fuel costs. IoT technology on e-scooters can analyse driving patterns and impose parental controls like limiting max speed and limit.

It can also detect, and report the use of unauthorised spare parts during EV servicing. Remote-controlled delivery of an e-scooter may even be possible, with IoT-enabled cameras and a seamless 4G connection.

Technology (IOT/AI and others) has the potential to solve problems and unlock opportunities that today can only be imagined.

To assist in implementing these wide ranging schemes, the council have to date secured approximately 1.5m of funding from Transport for Londons (TfL) Streetspace for London programme as well as 100,000, the maximum available, from the Department for Transports (DfT) Emergency Active Travel funding, with further opportunities being pursued.

Councillor Harrison continued:

The steps we have taken to meet the safe travel challenge include ten full road closures that enable walking and cycling whilst restricting through-traffic; four cycle permeability schemes; widening pavements at over six locations across our town centres, high streets and residential roads that have only limited footway space; pop-up cycle lanes and improved existing cycle lanes, and facilities including installing new cycle hangars, with 84 now available across Camden.

During this period, Camden Council also continued work to complete a number of longer-standing transformational walking and cycling schemes including the West End Project, as well as at Camden Park Road, Brunswick Square and Prince of Wales Road (eastbound permanent cycle lane).

Councillor Harrison continued:

We will continue to carry out a wide range of measures to enable safe, healthy travel as clear alternatives to car use. For example, we are currently implementing two new pop-up cycle lanes, on York Way (southern section) and Prince of Wales Road (eastbound), as well as improving the cycling connection at Patshull Road-Kentish Town Road.

We are also developing plans for further pop-up cycle lanes, Low Traffic Neighbourhood schemes across different parts of the borough, a range of through-traffic restrictions, and more new cycle hangars.

We will also roll out new dockless bike hire bays which will mean that riders will need to leave the dockless bikes in designated areas, rather than anywhere. This will help address the clutter these bikes can sometimes cause.

By the start of the new school year in September, eight further schools across Camden will have timed road closures at the start and end of the school day as part of our Healthy School Street programme, making it safer and easier for parents and children to walk, cycle or scoot to school.

Nobody goes there anymore. Its too crowded,said baseball great and master of the malaprop Yogi Berra. It happened to the computer show COMDEX, which went from 211,000 attendees in 2000 to out of business by 2004. Will this be the fate of giant trade shows in the coronavirus era?

Spokespeople for trade shows like the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) describe each show as the biggest and best. While best is subjective, it is clear that tradeshows like 2021 CES, scheduled forJan. 6 through Jan 9, 2021 in Las Vegas will not be the biggest everif they happen at all. The culprit: COVID-19.

Just this past January, CES 2020, billed as the largest tech event in the world, had an estimated attendance of 170,000 with 2.97 million square feet of exhibition space. And while MAD Magazine cartoons comically depicted conventioneers with lampshades on their heads, the money is serious: CES had an estimated economic impact of $283.3 million.

COVID-19 changed everything, but the banner atop the CES website reads, Our next CES in Las Vegas is in January 2021, and we plan to proceed as scheduled.

Yet many questions remain, from the availability of domestic and international airlines to international quarantines and restrictions on travelers. Can the shows hotels, transportation, press conferences, keynotes, parties, and giant convention halls be kept acceptably safe? And will companies let key executives travel in an environment where the pandemic has not been controlled?

In Nevada, gatherings are currently limited to 50 people or less due to COVID-19. How will Las Vegas go from a Strip limited to gatherings of 50 people in July (a key reason shows like now-bankrupt Cirque Du Soleil have not re-opened) to hosting 175,000 in January?

Such factors have already led to the cancellation (or postponement) of many major trade shows in favor of going digital. Virtual trade shows sprung up after the 9/11 attacks but petered out as people got back on planes. Todays video technology and bandwidth is much better, as shown by the ubiquity of Zoom, WebEx and Teams virtual meetings. But would an all-online tradeshow satisfy the need to meet, greet, discuss, display, and sell?

At this point we plan to move forward with a live show. We are a not for profit member-based organization, and we are moving ahead because our exhibitors are telling us they want to. says Jean Foster, Senior Vice President of Marketing & Communications for the Consumer Technology Association, producer of CES. Most likely it will be a hybrid show based in Las Vegas and also streamed digitally.

The show will be smaller, says Foster, because not everyone will be able to travel to US. There may be fewer smaller companies at areas like Eureka Park, which normally has 1200 startup companies.

The organization is also working on r-econfiguring the show floor with wider aisles, more spacing between booths, and foot traffic reconfigured to move in single directions. In previous years hundreds would queue up to get into popular press conferences, many of which will now be streamed. The bottom line: to increase physical distance between attendees.

Foster says the CTA is working with the Las Vegas Convention Authority and the casino hotels to mitigate crowding and enhance social distancing in bars, taxi lines, elevators, etc. There will be more shuttle buses, with less people on each, and no open buffet receptions.

There will definitely health screenings according to best practices, and everyone will wear a mask, says Foster. Whether best practices mean a quick temperature check or an actual COVID test is not yet clear, but CTA appears to be hoping for the appearance of a rapid, accurate test.

Foster says the show will be smaller, but doesnt have an exact number, Were six months out. Foster admits, There may be a scenario that says we cant do it. But at this point, Based on what were hearing, our key exhibitors are planning to send their people.

If CESshrinksor goes mostly virtual, does it risk losing its relevancy and immediacy? The CES brand is a golden brand, that goes beyond the industry. We expect a large digital audience to come in, says Ms. Foster. I think we will be able to bring more eyeballs than normal foot traffic. We will attract and bring in a broader audience, either physically or digitally.

The IFA show, a consumer electronics event to be held in Berlin from September 3 to September 5, may provide a model for such shows to succeed considering the pandemic.

IFA this year will be a hybrid show, combining physical and virtual attendance and exhibitions. While IFA Berlin 2019 boasted 1800 exhibitors and 250,000 visitors, the IFA2020 Special Edition is limited to 1000 participants per day per event by the health assessment of the State of Berlin.Social distancing, prudent visitor management and thorough hygiene measures are of the utmost importance to us, says Jens Heithecker,IFAExecutive Director.

One of many questions is whether attendees from countries affected by EU barriers due to high coronavirus rates, (like the US, Brazil, Russia, etc.) can get exemptions to attend. Who can guarantee anything in these times, says Heithecker. It is no secret that one of the greatest challenges are the travel restrictions that are still in effect.But we will support our guests wherever possible.

Considering such issues, We have optimized the conditions of participation for theIFASpecial Edition 2020. The participation costs are deliberately reduced to a minimum, Heithecker says. A key part of this years show will be the IFAExtended Space, a virtual space that will allow those who cannot be physically present to participate. How will it work? The concept will be presented shortly stay tuned and curious, says Heithecker.

Meanwhile, vendors are trying to bridge the gap between physical and virtual tradeshow events. ShowStoppers has long been one of the premier press parties at CES, where journalists meet and drink with companies displaying new products. Amid pandemic, RVs offer many the control they want over vacations – Deseret News

SALT LAKE CITY Utahns eager to find alternatives to vacations that heighten the risk of exposure to coronavirus are turning to recreational vehicle rentals in droves, spilling into RV parks for socially distant vacations.

Tempted by the level of control they offer, first time RVers people whove never rented or owned an RV before in particular are trying it out, according to Kampgrounds of America Vice President of Communications Mike Gast.

A phenomenal amount of people and most of those first timers are flocking to rent RVs from other people and give that lifestyle a try or have decided thats going to be their vacation this year, Gast said. We are seeing a huge bump in business right now.

Its a trend thats been reflected in a number of different RV parks, according to Ben Inlay, operations manager for the popular McArthurs Temple View RV Resort in St. George. He said his business has seen a very large increase of first time RVers at the park, in addition to a surge of same-day reservations.

There have also been a lot of people traveling from other states that have been locked down coming here because RV travel is one of the safest ways to travel because you have your own bed and living quarters, he said. There were also a lot of people who stayed here longer in Utah primarily because the areas they were heading home to were impacted by COVID much more and they didnt want to travel to that.

While travel restrictions, financial restraints and other travel-related fears brought down the number of stays overall this year, Gast said KOA sites are clawing their way back, and each week gets a little bit better. Recently, weekends have seen phenomenal numbers and theres been advance reservations at the end of the June that were higher than the number of bookings at that same time in 2019.

We know that demand is there. We know that people were quick to return to the camping lifestyle, and we certainly arent going to recover to the end of last year, its just too much of a gap there, Gast said. But it certainly did come back strong, and we also understand that theres likely going to be surges in certain areas.

Gast said one of the more encouraging things is that customer satisfaction is up. This coupled with the fact that more people are turning to camping and renting an RV for the first time, makes him feel positive about KOAs future.

We think the net result of COVID is we probably have been able to increase the audience for camping. Weve got more people interested in it, more people giving it a try, and we know that once they give it a try they are going to want to do it again, he said.

Chris Clark, of Orlando, Florida, is also staying at the Salt Lake City KOA site. Shes currently on a six-week trip with her husband and daughter.

She said she understands why traveling by RV is such a popular thing these days.

Camping is naturally socially distancing, Clark said. It was easy for us because it gives us the flexibility of you can go and do. There are so many advantages of traveling by RV.

Peer-to-peer rentals like RVshare and Outdoorsy have seen a considerable surge in public interest. Similar to Airbnb, these companies allow people to rent out or find an RV all over the country.

RVShare CEO Jon Gray said stays in Utah specifically have doubled in June compared to the previous year. While the service exists all over the country, the Western metro area is a big market Salt Lake City being one of the top cities.

Gray said RVshares rentals have shifted quite a bit since mid-March when the coronavirus began heavily impacting life in the U.S. Initially, the company pivoted business to service health care workers so they could have access to an RV in their driveway in order to lessen the odds of potentially infecting family members, and to other critical workers who needed to isolate themselves.

As states have steadily loosened restrictions, RVshare has seen surges in rentals in those areas and a pretty high percentage of new bookings coming from first timers, Gray said, explaining the numbers are pretty astounding.

He credited this to the aspects of the RV business that are attractive to people where control is a premium when there are so many unknowns because of the pandemic.

RVs allow you to have your own bathroom and your own kitchen. They allow you to stay away from crowds. They allow you the flexibility to stay where you want to control the environment around you, Gray said. These things cast in the light of COVID have become even more important.

He pointed to a recent RVshare survey that found 93% of respondents are aiming to avoid crowds this summer on their vacation.

You have the RV and you can drive it to where you want. If you come upon a campground that you feel is too crowded, you dont have to go there. You can go to the next one, Gray said.

Sharon Ginger, of San Diego, echoed these sentiments. She and her family are staying in the Salt Lake City KOA campground while embarking on a 17 day trip.

Its our space. Nobody is coming into our space unless we invite them into it. Its our bed every night, its our sheets and our pillows. We can cook in our camper if we want to, Ginger said. You can be fully self-contained.

Ginger said she has a compromised immune system because of her history with a rare form of cervical cancer. She explained she feels totally safe camping, and said her diagnosis actually helped encourage her to get out and live including selling her home four years ago and embarking on a six-month trip with her familys first camper.

The Hill's Steve Clemons interviews American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten. Read excerpts from the interview below.

Clemons: I know you want to get kids back to school, get education going again, but tell us the right way to do it, and what do you think is the wrong way to do it?

Weingarten: First off, we have to think about what kids have lost in the last few months. And that is why, despite the surge in cases, despite the fact that there's not a vaccine, teachers and our union have been working on a plan to reopen schools since the beginning of April. This is it. We believe that we have to reopen in a far better way than the haphazard way that schools were closed and the economy was paused. We know that's important for kids. We know that's important for parents. We know that teachers want it. In fact, we just did a poll that showed that about three-quarters of teachers, if we had the safety conditions that were possible to reopen, would want to reopen in-person learning. But this is the key, Steve. Safety, S A F E T Y. We spent a lot of time thinking about safety of bars. We spent a lot of time thinking about safety of office buildings. We spent a lot of time thinking about safety for astronauts, for our veterans, for our armed forces. We need to spend as much time thinking about safety of our kids and of our educators. And there are obvious things that have to happen. And that starts with the physical distancing and the masks, cleaning a school and ventilation, making sure we make provisions for those that are at-risk and making sure we are attentive to the emotional and the instructional needs of children. This is not magical thinking. These are things that the scientists and the physicians have said we need to do, and ultimately they cost money and they require rethinking and reimagining what school looks like, in Florida as early as August and in the Northeast and the Midwest as early as September. And what we're concerned about is that now the Trump administration has woken up to the fact that none of these things are in place. They have really angry parents, all across the nation, and they have only themselves to blame because they have refused to negotiate a new package to create the funding that is needed, and they have refused to put any guidance out whatsoever, but the CDC guidance that we press for to actually have what is a safe reopening.

Clemons: Even with the spike of COVID-19 cases, schools are being ordered to open next month in Florida. Is this a train wreck that we're seeing in real life with real consequences?

Weingarten: Yes, it's a train wreck, and it is par for the course of the Trump administration because [Education Secretary] Betsy DeVosElizabeth (Betsy) Dee DeVosDeVos urges school districts to 'think creatively' about reopening amid coronavirus Jill Biden promises if Biden's elected 'no more Betsy DeVos' The Hill's Morning Report - Presented by Facebook - Trump takes on CDC over schools MORE sat on her hands. She hasn't put one bit of guidance out. We wrote a letter to [HHS Secretary Alex] Azar and DeVos, letters back in March. But we've been at this since the beginning of February, and sorry if I sound so angry, but I am. We've been at this since the beginning of February saying, "What's going on with COVID? We know that there's something here that's more significant than just a flu," and we've heard crickets from both of them. So now because parents, you know, are up in arms and they rightfully should be. And now, because all Trump cares about is his jobs numbers. And he knows that if parents can't send their kids to school, they can't reopen the economy more broadly. Now he's doing full-cap tweets, saying schools must reopen. But either they are completely ignorant about what it takes to reopen schools, or they are completely callous and craven in their attempts to do so. What is happening in Florida right now is terrible. If you understand one second of the science, you know you cannot reopen schools five days a week ... for every single kid that we want to teach, and we want to embrace. That essentially, the safety standards require basically 50 percent capacity, the cleaning standards require that you clean schools all the time. So where is the money for the extra cleaning, even if you did a staggered approach, which is what New York and other places are contemplating right now, where's the money for the cleaning? Where's the money for the PPE? Where's the money for the services? Where's the money for the nurses and for the therapists and you have crickets in Florida, you just essentially have this magical thinking. Opening schools is not the magical kingdom. Opening schools requires real thought for teachers and parents and kids. And this is what's gonna happen if there's not real thought to it. You're gonna see a huge number of parents and kids and teachers basically say it's not safe for us.

Clemons: Youve worked with a lot of Republicans, Sen. Do they hear you? Do they worry about what it's gonna take by way of money and funding to get the right health guardrails back in the schools.

Weingarten: Well, I think you know Senator Alexander does. Before [Senate Majority Leader Mitch] McConnell went on break, Senator Alexander said, It's gonna take money to reopen schools. I had a great conversation with him where he, you know, he completely understands this. He has been a governor. He's been a college president, you know, he understands the nitty-gritty of what it takes, but what is so perplexing to me is why McConnell would have gone on break without dealing with the legitimate needs of states and schools, particularly to do what they want to do. I mean, everybody should be in the same place about the needs of kids not being addressed by remote education. I think the only person who believed remote education was good was Betsy DeVos because, you know, she's either held stock in K12 inc., which is a virtual remote place, or because she wants to keep on disabling or defunding public education. But other than that, I havent heard anybody on either side of the aisle that thought what happened in the last three months was good. They thought that teachers were heroic, and they are, for engaging kids, you know, and changing their teaching practices in the course of 24 hours to go from in-school to remote. But we know that kids are missing out in terms of the engagement in social isolation. I agree with the pediatricians on that, but ultimately we need to keep the schools safe. And particularly in a place like Florida, where the increase of cases is completely defying the president's own guidelines about how to reopen. So it's clear, I mean to me, this is lunacy. And I have studied this and this is my job to try to figure this out. But take a parent, who's not a scientist, take a teacher who's not a scientist, whos just getting all these mixed messages. What are they supposed to think about? What the president is doing, what [Florida Gov. Ron] DeSantis is doing is just creating high anxiety. What we've learned from Europe, and from their very effective ways of reducing the virus, is you need to have a consistent public health message over and over again. You need people to communicate and collaborate around it and you need to fund it, and that is why their schools have started to be open. And that is why our schools, even for the summer, for summer voluntary summer school, couldn't get open. And that's why you're seeing more and more consternation about what's gonna happen in the fall.

Clemons: On top of the coronavirus situation, we have Black Lives Matter protests, the killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and others. In this moment, how do we become less reactive and more proactive? Can we use this opportunity of reinvesting in something like education in schools to fix some of the problems in the social contract? Is that discussion going on anywhere?

I was honored to serve as part of the Joint Bernie, Joe Platform Committee on K-12 and higher education, and it went on plenty there. You're gonna see a lot of that in his platform for America. I think you have a huge ideological divide right now, and you could see it frankly. So the answer is this makes schools more important. It makes investing in schools more important. Part of what is driving us, and I know my own members, you know, when you ask them the question about should we open up schools and what's the best reason? And they'll say, reopening the economy is last. For them, it's meeting the needs of kids is first. And they understand, just like so many of us do, that we are in the middle of three crises: Were in the middle of a pandemic that made the economic inequality worse, and we're in the middle of a racial reckoning that should have happened generations ago. All of these things make what happens in schools even more important, and it makes dealing with the well being needs of kids even more critical. Everything, every social issue hits the schoolhouse door, so I hear Biden talk about it all the time. I hear frankly, Democrats and some Republicans talk about it, but what you're seeing is that Trump is making it worse. And frankly, you saw this in terms of even PPP, and the reports about PPP. PPP was a program out of CARES 2 that was attempting to make sure that small businesses and other businesses in this economic pause could keep hiring, could keep their staff intact and could keep their businesses alive. And who were the first groups to rush to get? Groups that don't believe in government like the Ayn Rand Institute and Grover Norquist, Kanye WestKanye Omari WestTrump on Kanye West's presidential run: 'He is always going to be for us' Kanye West says he had coronavirus Coronavirus Report: The Hill's Steve Clemons interviews Randi Weingarten MORE and who is still squabbling to try to get money, who is still struggling to try to get money so that we can reasonably reopen schools. Kids and teachers. So what does that say about our economy and our country right now? That the hand outs were there for those actually didn't need it, and for those who dont believe in it ,and then put the hand ups that we really need for kids and for states who have been continuing to do the essential services as the president abdicated any responsibility for COVID, who got the responsibility? States like New York, like New Jersey, they've been shelling out lots of money to get things done. Think about the New York City subways every single night they're being clean to ensure safety for the passengers. All of this costs money, and yet they've been shelling it out. They haven't gotten the recovery packages they needed. And yet even the people who don't believe in government like Grover Norquist got the package he needed. ... I think everybody needed something in terms of this, forced pause of the economy. But don't put the people who need it most last. And what the Biden people are talking about is how you reimagine society like what happened in the New Deal.

Clemons: So weve just got a couple of minutes. But I wanted to come in at that point real quick. Secretary DeVos, I know has been pushing that private schools have access to funding and support right now. Has she been as equally supportive of public schools?

Weingarten: No, in fact, what happened is Secretary DeVos, look private schools and parochial schools get a lot of public money through transportation and other types of things. The issue in terms of Secretary DeVos, is where her attention is. She's done nothing, zip, nothing for kids in public schools. But she rushes in to help any kid who goes to religious school. All we're asking for is give some attention to kids in public schools and what she's done is shes taken the money that goes to low-income kids in public schools to give it without accountability to a parochial school or a private school.

Clemons: Your network of teachers around the country, were already doing interesting things online with each other, like sharing their lessons online, which you had created. I'd love to hear, just as we close any stories of those cool, innovative things that teachers are doing to try to connect with their students while they're not able to meet in person-to-person classes.

Weingarten: The teachers probably now know more about remote education than anyone in Silicon Valley because teachers have had to do the kind of Oh my God moment and deal with remote education for the last three months. And I have spent several hours talking to teachers who have been through this and they've learned a lot. So there's a couple of things that I just want to throw out. Number one we started this idea, and all of this as on Share My Lesson, and all of that is for free. We make it free for anyone. You don't have to be a union member to get access to this sharing site. But you know, we tried to end up summing up the year with capstone projects, and we came up with several that were geared developmentally to early grades, to middle grades and high school years as ways that teachers could work with students to cap their years and those are all on Share My Lesson. But the second thing is teachers just found amazing ways, they would like find an old blackboard that they had in a garage and use it for their lessons. They found all sorts of different things to wear to make their kids laugh. In a proper physical distance, would sit on the kids lawn and engaged with one-to-one story telling. Teachers were telling me, particularly in the older grades, how they did what they call what we call now asynchronous learning, which is, they tape a lecture that a student could listen to any time during the day so that they could deal with the family balance and then, you know, reinforce it in group learning. The virtual choirs that you see, the virtual choruses that you see have taken hours and hours and hours to do. But any of them would just have a handkerchief when you're watching them. It's been amazing to watch the love coming through Zoom in terms of the engagement that teachers have done with their students.
