NASAs next rover to the Red Planet is slated to launch no earlier than July 30. These highlights will get you up to speed on the ambitious mission.

In less than a month, NASA expects to launch the Mars 2020 Perseverance mission from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Loaded with scientific instruments, advanced computational capabilities for landing, and other new systems, the Perseverance rover is the largest, heaviest, most sophisticated vehicle NASA has ever sent to the Red Planet.

Perseverance sets a new bar for our ambitions at Mars, said Lori Glaze, planetary science director at NASA Headquarters in Washington. We will get closer than ever before to answering some of sciences longest-standing questions about the Red Planet, including whether life ever arose there.

What drives Perseverances mission and what will it do at the Red Planet? Here are seven things to know:

1. The Perseverance rover draws on the NASA and scientific spirit of overcoming challenges.

The rover has a tough mission. Not only does it have to land on a treacherous planet, it has to work on its science goals: searching for signs of ancient microbial life, characterizing the planets geology and climate, collecting carefully selected rock and sediment samples for future return to Earth, and paving the way for human exploration beyond the Moon.

These activities epitomize why NASA chose the name Perseverance from among the 28,000 essays submitted during the Name the Rover contest. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the months leading up to the launch in particular have required creative problem solving, teamwork, and determination.

Building this incredibly sophisticated rover has been the hardest thing Ive ever been a part of as an engineer, said Ray Baker, the missions flight system manager at NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. While coronavirus added significant challenges and logistics, the team has shown great determination and diligence to build a rover we can be proud to send to Mars. We cant wait to see the many years of dedication pay off at the launch pad.

2. Perseverance builds on the lessons of other Mars rovers.

NASAs modest first rover Sojourner demonstrated in 1997 that a robot could rove on the Red Planet. Spirit and Opportunity, which landed in 2004, found evidence that the planet once hosted running water before becoming a frozen desert. Curiosity, which has been exploring Mars since 2012, discovered that its landing site, Gale Crater, was home to of a lake billions of years ago, with an environment that could have supported microbial life.

Perseverance aims to take the next step, seeking, as a primary goal, to answer one of the key questions of astrobiology: Are there any signs that life once existed on Mars?

3. The rover will be landing in a place with high potential for finding signs of past microbial life.

Jezero Crater is 28 miles (45 kilometers) wide and sits on the western edge of Isidis Planitia, a giant basin just north of the Martian equator dug out long ago when a space rock hit the surface. Sometime between 3 billion and 4 billion years ago at Jezero, a river flowed into a body of water the size of Lake Tahoe.

The science team has had many discussions internally and externally about where the next Mars rover should go, said Ken Farley, the missions project scientist, based at Caltech in Pasadena. We ultimately chose Jezero Crater because it is such a promising location for finding organic molecules and other potential signs of microbial life.

4. Perseverance will also be collecting important data about Mars geology and climate.

Mars orbiters have been collecting images and other data from Jezero Crater from about 200 miles (322 kilometers) above, but finding signs of ancient life on the surface will require much closer inspection. It demands a rover like Perseverance, which can look for signs that may be related to life and can analyze the context in which they were found to see if they were biological in origin.

Understanding Mars past climate conditions and reading the geological history embedded in its rocks will also give us a sense of why Earth and Mars which formed from the same primordial stuff ended up so different.

5. Perseverance is the first leg of a round trip to Mars.

Verifying ancient microscopic life on Mars carries an enormous burden of proof. Perseverance is the first rover to bring a sample-gathering system to Mars that will package promising examples of rocks and sediments for return to Earth by a future mission.

A Mars Sample Return campaign is being planned by NASA and the European Space Agency because here on Earth we can investigate the samples with instruments too large and complex to send to Mars. Terrestrial laboratories would be used to establish whether any potential signs of life detected by the rover are definitive evidence of past life.

6. Perseverance carries instruments and technology that will pave the way for human missions to the Moon and Mars.

The Terrain-Relative Navigation system, which autonomously helps the rover avoid hazards during landing, and the Mars Science Laboratory Entry, Descent, and Landing Instrumentation 2 (MEDLI2) sensor suite, which gathers crucial data during the journey through the Martian atmosphere, will help future human missions land more safely and with larger payloads on other worlds.

Perseverance also has features that will help astronauts once theyre on the surface of another world: improved self-driving smarts for more efficient travel and the Mars Environmental Dynamics Analyzer (MEDA) instrument suite, which will provide key information about weather, climate, and dust. Meanwhile, the Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment (MOXIE) technology demonstration aims to produce oxygen from Mars carbon dioxide atmosphere, demonstrating a way future explorers might produce oxygen for rocket propellant as well as for breathing.

7. You will get to ride along.

The Perseverance rover and other parts of the Mars 2020 spacecraft feature 23 cameras more cameras than any interplanetary mission in history. Theyll help engineers put together a high-definition view of the landing process after the rover safely touches down on Mars on February 18, 2021, and theyll deliver images of the landscape and scientific specimens in breathtaking detail. And as with previous Mars missions, this one plans to make raw and processed images available on the missions website.

Perseverance also carries three silicon chips with the names of nearly 11 million people who signed up to ride with the mission.

NASAs InSight lander is still stuck in the Martian soil – Digital Trends

Theres more trouble on Mars for NASAs InSight lander, which has been fighting a battle to free its stuck heat probe (or mole) for more than a year.

The mole has been making progress recently, thanks to the use of the landers arm to push down on its back cap and embed it in the soil. However, NASA scientists now arent sure if it will be able to dig deep enough to collect the data on temperatures that is needed.

The problem is that the mole needs to dig down at least 3 meters (almost 10 feet) into the soil. Normally, it uses friction from the soil to push itself deeper with its self-hammering action. But the soil where InSight has landed is different from what was expected, and turns out to be tightly packed. The mole needs loose soil to create friction which allows it to move, but the soil where it is located is cement-like, according to NASA, consisting of duricrust with grains that tend to stick to each other.

This means the self-hammering action isnt working as well as it should, and the mole may not be able to dig deep into the soil.

Tilman Spohn, the principal investigator for InSights HP3 instrument, explained more in a blog post: The team continues to be determined, although we appreciate that the task is not likely to become easier, he wrote. The team had prepared for the possibility that their current plan would not work, so now they need to swing InSights arm out of the way so they can investigate the hole with InSights cameras.

We will be interested to see how deep in the Mole really is (it should be a centimeter or so below the surface), whether the morphology of the pit has changed and whether the sand that we had seen in the pit is still there or whether the pit has been drained by the hammering action, he wrote.

Even with these problems, InSight will still keep working. It will continue to use its other instruments, such as its seismometer for detecting marsquakes, which can tell scientists more about the activity below the planets surface.

Another Lively Season of Night-Shining Clouds – nasa.gov

Every summer in the Northern Hemisphere, electric blue streaks form high in the atmosphere. These seasonal clouds typically lurk about 80 kilometers (50 miles) overhead in the mesosphere around the Arctic, but every once in a while they form at lower latitudes. In 2019, the clouds showed up in places where they were only rarely seen in the previous decade, including California, Colorado, and France. This year, the clouds are equally impressive.

Its another incredible year, said Lynn Harvey, an atmospheric scientist at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado. When noctilucent clouds extend to mid-latitudeswhere people live and notice them on a daily basiswe consider that a noteworthy season. This years clouds have been seen as far south as Joshua Tree, California.

Noctilucent clouds form when water vapor aggregates and freezes around specks of meteor dust floating in the mesosphere. These thin, wavy ice clouds reflect sunlight and usually shine bright blue and white. Known as night-shining clouds, they typically appear around dusk or dawn when the Sun is below the horizon at an angle that lights the clouds from below.

The image above shows a satellite view of noctilucent clouds on June 23, 2020. The image is centered on the North Pole and is stitched together from data acquired in several orbital passes by NASAs Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere (AIM) spacecraft. AIMs Cloud Imaging and Particle Size (CIPS) instrument measures albedo, or the amount of light reflected back to space by the high-altitude clouds. The clouds appear in various shades of light blue to white, depending on the properties of the ice particles.

The video above shows noctilucent clouds on July 7, 2020, at around 3:30 a.m. approximately 30 minutes north of Calgary, Canada. After snapping photos of noctilucent clouds for nearly a decade, photographer Chris Ratzlaff noted that he has had more sightings in 2020 than in past years.

Harvey said this years atmospheric conditions have been outstanding for noctilucent cloud formation. The clouds largely need cold temperatures and high water vapor concentrationsboth of which have been present this summer and at record-breaking levels on some days at some latitudes.

The graphs below show daily average temperature and water vapor concentrations at 80N latitude for the past 14 years (2007-2020). The graphs are based on data from Microwave Limb Sounder on NASAs Aura satellite.

Note than on May 24, 2020, the mesosphere dropped to its coldest temperature in 14 years of records; that cold persisted into June. The mesosphere was also wetter than normal at the beginning of May, then the water vapor was likely converted to water-ice as the cloud season ensued. However, water vapor concentrations at lower altitudes (where clouds are more sparse) indicated an extremely wet atmosphere.

Harvey said the extra moisture and colder-than-normal temperatures can be traced to a few factors. First, the Sun is in a period of lower activity known as a solar minimum, so there is less ultraviolet radiation breaking up water molecules at high altitudes. Second, the mesosphere may be wetter due to air rising from lower layers of the atmosphere and carrying more moisture into the region.

We do not yet understand whether the cold and wet conditions this year and last are due to solar influences or atmospheric circulation patterns, said Harvey.

Pat McAfee Won $1,400 in an Underground Poker Game and Used It to Make His NFL Dream Come True – Sportscasting

Pat McAfee was the best punter and onside kick artist in the entire NFL during his prime. He played eight seasons with the Indianapolis Colts and made two Pro Bowls during his NFL career. His path to becoming a professional kicker is one of the most unique youll ever hear, too. If not for a $1,400 win in an underground poker game in high school, McAfee wouldve never even made it to the NFL.

RELATED: The Indianapolis Colts Just Signed T.Y Hiltons Potential Replacement

As a high school senior, Pat McAfee wasnt garnering much attention from Division I football programs. He was quite a talented soccer player, so he had far more options to continue his athletic career on the pitch at the next level.

Although he was a more coveted soccer star, McAfee had a special passion for football. He was about to accept his only Division I offer from Kent State until a unique opportunity arose his senior year.

As signing day quickly approached, McAfee got invited to a kicking camp in Florida. The only problem was the trip was too expensive. McAfees parents wouldnt put up the $1,500 to send him to the camp, so he took the situation into his own hands.

McAfee borrowed $100 from a friend and joined an underground poker game. After winning a massive hand with a full house, he walked out of the room with $1,400. With a $100 addition from his parents, McAfee was on his way to Florida.

RELATED: Pat McAfee Has Continued to Earn a Nice Living Since Retiring From the NFL

Before miraculously winning enough money to send himself to the prestigious kicking camp, McAfee was unsure if he was even going to play football in college.

That changed within a span of 24 hours. McAfee arrived at the camp and made nine straight field goals, including a 60- and a 65-yarder. The only kick McAfee missed was from 70 yards out.

McAfee left the camp feeling good about his performance, but he didnt expect his life to change in a matter of hours. The next day, West Virginias recruiting coordinator visited McAfee at his high school and offered him a scholarship on the spot.

McAfee went on to have a brilliant kicking career at West Virginia, and he was later drafted by the Colts in 2009. The rest is history.

RELATED: Pat McAfee Is the Perfect Choice to Replace Booger on Monday Night Football

Pat McAfees career wouldnt have been possible without a couple of ifs going his way. If he wasnt drafted by the Colts in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL draft, he mightve never made an NFL roster. If he didnt make nine straight field goals at a scouting camp in high school, he would have never gone to West Virginia.

And if McAfee didnt draw pocket jacks in that poker game, he never wouldve won the hand that changed his life.

The full house McAfee drew that day might be the only reason he was eventually able to make it to the NFL.

The Rise and Fall of Dani Stern – HighstakesDB

Dani AnskyStern is one of the true legends of online poker. His meteoric rise to stardom during the poker boom saw him recognised as one of the best cash game players on the planet.

By: Mark Patrickson

Like any stars career there have been good times and bad times. Fortunately for Stern, he has seen far much more of the upside.

The 33-year-old has been one of the most vocal high stakes players over the years, particularly when Amaya took an axe to the PokerStars players benefits. But his opinions have always been respected as he became a driving voice in the community.

Lets take a look over Sterns career as he built up his reputation as a feared NL Holdem player on partypoker in the pre-UIGEA era to playing nosebleed PLO games against the best in the world.

While Stern made his real money during the Moneymaker boom years, and was already known by anyone who matters, he became a poker household name after appearing on the TV show Two Months, Two Million in 2009.

Hooking up with his pals Jay Rosenkrantz, Emil Patel, and Brian Roberts, the quartet were on a mission to win $2 million in two months under the gaze of the TV cameras.

The scene was set in a swish house in Las Vegas with the guys showing the world just what was possible in the poker boom.

Ultimately they were unsuccessful, only accumulating $676,000 with Sterns share being $100,800.

Even with the mission failure Stern was now firmly on the map as a star.

In the pre-Black Friday poker world Stern was one of the pioneers of new aggressive strategies as players got to grips with a fast-evolving game. His in-depth strategy posts on TwoPlusTwo coupled with videos on the Deucescracked training site made him one of the most sought after coaches in the business.

His playing career back then saw him as one of the regs in the $200/$400 NLHE and PLO games, netting millions of dollars.

When Black Friday hit most players were affected with the shift to much tougher games. It took a while before everyone adjusted to the new reality and Sterns experience was no different.

Playing from Toronto, Canada, and Mexico, Stern was forced to accept the new paradigm where he was no longer crushing the nosebleed stakes. According to his HSDB bio the games were simply too tough and the variance was just insane.

Like any true professional Stern followed the same advice he would have given many times to his students and dropped down stakes in order to reassess and gain some comfort. He became a super reg in the $5/$10 and $10/$20 PLO games for the next 2-3 years, crushing almost anyone in his path.

At this point it was time to try his hand at the nosebleeds once more.

The graphs for Sterns PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker account show a combined $1.7 million in losses, but this doesnt tell the whole story. It isnt clear exactly what the situation is for any unknown accounts on untracked sites.

Something that was reported extensively was the huge losses to unknown Swedish PLO specialist BERRI SWEET. This no doubt contributes heavily for most of the losses in the following results.

Stern also has a respectable record in the tournament scene. Both live and online. The HendonMob website shows a tidy $3.7 million in live winnings and he has also picked up $2 million online.

Being comfortable in both formats of the game is the mark of a great player.

Outside of his playing career Stern was very vocal on TwoPlusTwo about changes in the game. The poor timing of the discontinuation of the Supernova Elite VIP scheme on PokerStars led to an almighty uproar about an abuse of market position.

PokerStars pulled the rug out from under many players who had grinded insane volume for 10 months of the year only to find out that they would not receive what they had worked so hard for.

Stars such as Ike Haxton refused to renew their ambassadorship contracts and publicly criticised PokerStars for poor treatment of their customers.

Stern took to TwoPlusTwo to vent his fury and organised a boycott with many professionals refusing to log on for a period of time. He even attended a meeting with PokerStars execs to try and thrash out an agreement not to move forward with the changes, but to no avail.

The following year, clearly no longer a fan of what poker had to offer he decided to step away from the game for good.

No doubt with millions still in the bank and about to turn 33-years-old it was a good time to walk away and seek new challenges.

The poker community is no doubt poorer for Sterns absence. His strength of character backed up with integrity is sorely missed.

The Role of Nanotechnology in a Forensic Investigation – AZoNano

It is evident that the application of nanoscience in a forensic investigation has helped criminologists to solve crime mysteries in less time and with greater efficiency. The rapid advancements in forensic science come with technological improvements in nanotechnology. This article highlights some of the major achievements in forensic science based on nanotechnology.

Fingerprints have been used as unique evidence by criminologists since ancient times. Latent fingerprints are developed from several colored materials such as aluminum flake on a dark background and carbon soot on a light background. However, these materials have major drawbacks such as unclear images of the fingerprint. This problem is solved by using nanotechnology-based materials.

The practice of latent fingerprint detection using nanoparticles can be traced back to 1970.

In 1980, gold and silver nanoparticles were commonly used for the visualization of latent fingerprints on the surface of porous paper. However, for the last 20 years, several other nanoparticles such as CdS (a photoluminescent nanocrystal capped with dioctysulfo-succinate), silicon dioxide, fluorescent starchbased carbon, Eu+3doped Al2O3, andaluminum oxide have been popularly used for the detection of latent fingerprints on both porous and nonporous surfaces.

More recently, a group of researchers found a novel ZnOSiO2 nano-powder for the detection of latent fingerprints on various surfaces (dry and wet). Thisnanopowder is highly efficient to envisage finger ridge in detail, which is an important factor for criminologists.

Read more on the equipment used in forensic applications.

The main reasons criminologists face major challenges in the detection of explosive residues are listed below:

The nano-based technology is immensely useful for the identification of the trace amount of fragmented explosives from the crime scene. This technology also helps the investigators to detect microscopic particles of gun powders on the shooters hand.

How are latent fingerprints developed using nanomaterials?

Curcumin nanoparticles and amine-terminated nanoparticles are highly sensitive and are effectively used for the detection of trinitrotoluene.

Nanotechnology also helps investigators to solve petroleum product problems, for example, in cases that involve arson and would require examination of petroleum hydrocarbon traces.

DNA (genetic material) is one of the most important and unique evidence that could identify the presence of a person at the scene of the crime.

Magnetic nanoparticles help extract DNA from different sources such as the skin, saliva, blood, semen, and hair.

Nanotechnology-based tools (carbon nanotube) also help to analyze DNA sequences using atomic force microscopy technique.

Trackers and barcodes are used to track down stolen or missing products. These barcodes help to prove the authenticity of an item and prevent duplicating or counterfeiting products of reputed brands.

Barcoding plays a significant role in keeping the brands reputation, and also prevents economic loss. Nanotechnology has developed various nanofibers and nanodots with color codes that could help detect fake products.

It is also extremely useful for maintaining prison security that prevents convicts from absconding. Nano trackers are injected into the prisoners body, enabling the duty officers to monitor the movement of a convict. Even after an individual is released, this tracker keeps a detailed footprint of their movement and has helped prevent subsequent crimes by the same criminal.

Nanotechnology is also relevant to solve cases related to cybercrime and sting operations (authentication of tapes and identification of speakers).

DFC is commonly known as date rape and involves psychotropic substances which impair the decision-making capacity or behavioral control of an individual.

These drugs are used in various criminal activities such as rape and other heinous sexual assault on all age groups (minors to adults). It is also used for money extortion and robbery.

While following the existing conventional methods for the detection of these kinds of drugs, forensic experts face a lot of challenges in terms of sensitivity, cost-effectiveness, and other instrumental limitations. Recently, researchers have developed a smart and efficient method for the identification of these illicit drugs with the help of nanotechnology.

This smart system uses citrate-stabilized gold nanoparticles (probe) and smartphone camera (analysis device) for quick qualitative and quantitative detection of codeine sulfate. This method is highly beneficial because of its ultra-sensitivity to detect a minute amount of codeine sulfate on-spot with great accuracy by analyzing the colorimetric changes in the probe.

Gold nanoparticles have also proved to be efficient for the detection of trace amounts of clonazepam.

Estimation of the exact time of death is a vital factor in crime investigation. In the conventional system, various parameters are analyzed to predict the time of death. Some of the important parameters are:

However, conventional methods can only predict an approximate time of death. Researchers believe that nanotechnology, i.e., fluorescent nanoparticles could be used to estimate the level of amino acids (VH) with the help of flow cytometry.

How did ancient people in the Carmel cut their steaks 20,000 years ago? – The Jerusalem Post

Thousands of years before Israel would become renowned all over the world as the "startup-nation," prehistoric groups in the region mastered their very own kind of nanotechnology, new research by Israeli and Chinese archaeologists showed. As explained in a paper recently published in the journal PLOS ONE, inhabitants of the site of Neve Daniel on Mount Carmel produced highly effective miniaturized tools.Neve David presents the remains of a society that lived in the area some 20,000 years ago during the Epipaleolithic period, Dr. Iris Groman-Yaroslavski from the Zinman Institute of Archaeology at the University of Haifa and a lead author of a paper, told The Jerusalem Post. The site offers the traces of a rich material culture, including a vast amount of tiny flint tools, small blades not longer than 5 centimeters. The raw material to manufacture them was readily available on the Carmel. The flint had to be struck to create the core of the object and then struck again in successive phases to craft the precise tool needed, in a process that required a high level of skills. The bladelets were shaped in different forms, curved, triangle, rectangle and trapeze, creating artifacts that scholars refer to as microliths, the archaeologist pointed out.If in the past the use of these instruments was studied with a particular focus on their employment for weaponry, the new research focuses on the versatility of the purposes they served for. Among the authors of the paper are also the directors of excavation at Neve David Reuven Yeshurun and Dani Nadel as well as Hong Chen and other scholars from the Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China. As Groman-Yaroslavski pointed out, monoliths could be used for scraping, processing meat, cutting wood and a lot of other materials as well as to create spears and arrows for hunting and similar activities. Moreover, they were often inserted or glued to other objects made of different materials, creating composite tools. We were able to see how the people used them to butcher the animal and distribute it among the members in the group, or to cut and collect straw or other plants and more, she said.In order to understand how they functioned, we carried out microscopic investigation and experimental archaeology, she explained. If today we were to imagine using a 2-centimeter-long blade to cut woods, how would it work?A group of students involved in the project therefore created some replicas of the tools and tried them on different materials, comparing them with the ancient ones found in the site.We were surprised to find out how effective they were, if used correctly, the researcher pointed out. We conducted use-wear analysis, using a metallurgical microscope in magnification of up to 500 times in order to see the wear pattern. It is hard to prove the advantage of the miniaturized tools compared to larger tools used earlier or later, but I do think that they represented a form of sophistication, which I call the nanotechnology of prehistory, that is, doing the same things with smaller tools, like it happens today with computers and phones, she added.A few thousand years later, during the Neolithic, use of the miniaturized tools began to decline, until they almost disappeared, around 11,000 years ago.The scientist said that this phenomenon might have depended on several factors, from climatic changes to groups becoming bigger, therefore requiring different instruments.Around 9,000 years ago, the production of huge blades with new very sophisticated technology took entirely over, she concluded.Thousands of years before Israel would become renowned all over the world as the "start-up nation," prehistoric groups in the region mastered their very own kind of nanotechnology, new research by Israeli and Chinese archaeologists showed. On July 4, Vauhxx Booker went to the lake with friends. Five white men held him down and yelled get a noose". – Mamamia

"Two of them jumped me from behind and knocked me to the ground. I tussled with the two and another one joined in, then two more. The five were able to easily overwhelm me and got me to the ground and dragged me, pinning my body against a tree as they began pounding on my head, ripping off some of my hair, with several of them still on top of my body holding me down," Vauhxx recalled.

"They held me pinned and continued beating me for several minutes seeminglybecome more and more enraged. Atone point during the attack one of the men jumped on my neck," he added.

As the assault continued, a crowd grew, and many tried to intervene. Video footage of the encounter shows Vauhxx on all fours, being pinned against a tree.

WARNING: The below video is distressing. View with caution.

The attackers told the growing group, were going to break his arms (while literally attempting to bend my arms behind me) and then stated to the members of their party several times to get a noose, amongst some other choice slurs," continued Vauhxx, in his 1200 word recounting of the alleged hate crime.

"With me still pinned underneath them, they kept telling onlookers to leave the 'boy' and that everyone else (all white) could go. Folks then started filming the confrontation, and shouting that they wouldnt leave me to be killed," he wrote.

Eventually, the growing group of onlookers got the attackers off, and someone called 911.

When the Indiana Department of Natural Resources arrived, they approached the attackers first. When they finally made their way back to Vauhxx and his friends, the groupwere armed with multiple videos all of which included both physical and verbal threats on Vauhxx's life. Multiple witnesses corroborated their story, sharing their own vision of the terrifying event.

Vauhxx stood in front of them, covered in abrasions, bruising and ripped out hair patches. He also suffered a concussion as a result of the attack.

Cell-like decoys could mop up viruses in humans including the one that causes COVID-19 – Kiowa County Press

Liangfang Zhang, University of California San Diego

The Research Brief is a short take about interesting academic work.

Researchers around the world are working frantically to develop COVID-19 vaccines meant to target and attack the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Researchers in my nanoengineering lab are taking a different approach toward stopping SARS-CoV-2. Instead of playing offense and stimulating the immune system to attack the SARS-CoV-2 virus, we're playing defense. We're working to shield the healthy human cells the virus invades.

Conceptually, the strategy is simple. We create decoys that look like the human cells the SARS-CoV-2 virus invades. So far, we've made lung-cell decoys and immune-cell decoys. These cell decoys attract and neutralize the SARS-CoV-2 virus, leaving the real lung or immune cells healthy.

To make the decoys, we collect the outer membranes of the lung or immune cells and wrap them around a core made of biodegradable nanoparticles. From the outside the decoys look the same as the human cells they are impersonating. Our decoys are hundreds of times smaller in diameter than an actual lung or immune cell, but they have all the same cellular hardware sticking out of them.

In this illustration, six decoys surround a SARS-CoV-2 virus particle before it can reach a human cell. David Baillot, UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering, CC BY-ND

We call them "nanosponges" because they soak up harmful pathogens and toxins that attack the cells they impersonate. My team and I first developed the concept 10 years ago, and since then we've shown the nanosponges offer a new approach to fighting viral infections like HIV; bacterial infections like methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, E. coli and sepsis; and inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.

We recently published results showing that the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus binds to these decoy nanosponges, which were more than 90% effective in causing the virus to lose its ability to infect cells in petri dishes. Once the virus is locked into the decoy, it can't invade any real cells, and is cleared by the body's immune system.

Vaccines are critical for protecting against viral infections, but as viruses mutate they can render vaccines and treatments ineffective. This is why new flu vaccines are developed each year. Fortunately, SARS-CoV-2 doesn't appear to mutate as quickly as influenza viruses, but this highlights the need for alternatives that are unaffected by mutations.

I'm hopeful that other teams of researchers come up with safe and effective treatments for COVID-19 as soon as possible. But for now, my team is working and planning as if the world is counting on us.

The different types of nanosponges we've developed are in various stages of pre-clinical development. So far, the results look promising, but there is more work to do to ensure they're safe and effective.

Cellular nanosponges are a new kind of drug. We made the first nanosponges using human red blood cell membranes, and these are the furthest along in the regulatory process, having undergone all stages of pre-clinical testing.

Cellics Therapeutics, a startup company I co-founded, is in the process of submitting an investigational new drug application to the FDA for the red blood cell nanosponges to treat bacterial pneumonia. If these red blood cell nanosponges get FDA approval and if the pre-clinical data for the COVID-19 nanosponges keep looking good, the COVID-19 nanosponges could have a clearer path to clinical trials in the years ahead.

We are currently testing the nanosponges for SARS-CoV-2 in animals. If the nanosponges do reach the clinical trial stage, there are several ways of delivering the therapy, including direct delivery into the lung for intubated patients via an inhaler like those used by asthmatic patients or through an intravenous injection.

There is also the possibility that our immune-cell nanosponges could soak up the inflammatory cytokine proteins that are triggering the dangerous immune system overreactions in some people suffering from COVID-19.

‘One drop of spirituality’ to every human being: Sadhguru shares vision for the planet – Free Press Journal

The Foundation has also released several yogic practices for free download such as Isha Kriya, Simha Kriya, Chit Shakti meditation and Upa-yoga among other simple practices that can bring stability and harmony between body, mind, emotion and energies enhancing ones immune system, emotional balance and stability.

Unconscious human beings are the only problem you have on this planet, Sadhguru said speaking about the Conscious Planet initiative that was set for a global launch in March this year but has been pushed back because of the pandemic.

Even now, this pandemic flying around the world like this is basically because of unconscious human beings. If only human beings were a little more conscious, very easily we could've contained this, Sadhguru added.

Speaking about Cauvery Calling, an ecological initiative to revive river Cauvery, Sadhguru said, In spite of the pandemic, the work on the ground has been happening as it should happen, and that tree-based agriculture, the model promoted by Cauvery Calling, would ensure long-term well-being for the farmers.

On the recent death by suicide, of a young Hindi film actor, Sadhguru said that the education system offers nothing, nothing means absolutely nothing at all, in the whole process of growing up as to how a human being should handle his or her faculties, how they should address themselves. It's all about fixing the world. For that, we're paying a price as a generation. Stating that 800,000 people commit suicide annually, Sadhguru added that every forty seconds somebody is taking their own life. This is the worst tragedy that's happening in the world.

This is the first time in the Foundations history that Guru Purnima, the most important event on the Isha calendar, was an online event. It was streamed live from Isha Institute of Inner-Sciences in the United States.

A 360-degree approach to getting the perfect glowy skin this summer – Emirates Woman

The glow

When it comes to supplements, are we too reliant on these miracle capsules for skin-deep beauty? We look at a 360-degree approach instead.

Over the years of curating our routines and discovering hero products that deliver exactly what we need, one thing we all have come to realise is that beauty isnt only skin-deep. There has been an evolution of products on the market that promise to nourish our complexion, and they are not just the formulas you apply on the surface. Many well-known brands have extended their skincare lines beyond topical products by introducing supplements that help tackle concerns from the inside. See it as a 360-degree approach to your daily routine.

Some specialists believe that topical products only address around 20 per cent of skin issues, which naturally forces us to look to supplements as well as personal habits. Skin is the largest organ of our body. It is meant to protect us, but it is also a mirror a mirror that reflects our health and the faults in the body, Zuzana Hrdinova, a Lifestyle Consultant and Health Coach, explains.

Despite the nutritional supplement market being a multi-billion-dollar industry, the data to support the use of most of these products is poor. There is very little evidence that any supplement or a multivitamin can reverse the course of a disease or play a role in our skin health, she adds.

Shirley DSouza, a Certified Ketogenic & Primal living coach, agrees that there are a lot of decoy supplements out there in the market, especially when claiming a whole list of benefits, but does believe some supplements can be beneficial in replenishing the nutrients that are lost through the agricultural process.

Supplements may be useful for people who are unable to get adequate nutrition from diet alone, adds health coach, Sheetal Ramchandani. For example, it is recommended that vegans take a supplement of vitamin B12 since it isnt adequately available in plant foods and some specific conditions, like gastrointestinal issues that can affect nutrient absorption, call for more than high nutrition and require extra support that supplements can provide.

Zinc is one of the widely recommended supplements that support the immune system, while Omega 3 repairs the skin barrier. Iron can also be extremely beneficial, especially for those prone to eczema or psoriasis. But like with anything, seeking professional advice is the best way for you to know for sure that what you are taking is beneficial, as Hrdinova points out: If you take calcium, magnesium or zinc, but you are deficient in Vitamin D, you will not be absorbing those minerals and hence you will not see any results.

Vitamin C and E are emerging as skincare heroes among the beauty insiders as they are seen as powerful antioxidants. Collagen supplements are also on the rise. As we age, we produce less collagen that results in wrinkles and loss of skin elasticity. It is still hard to judge whether the collagen you ingest will have the same properties when it reaches your skin as the digestion process breaks it down, so perhaps its more beneficial to look at products that encourage collagen production. Chicken soup, for example, is rich in amino acids which encourages our bodies to produce collagen. One big change I would add to a diet is bone broth chicken or beef which is full of collagen but more importantly full of electrolytes and has properties that help, our gut health a lot more. Our gut health is important as it is our main communication to the brain, hormones and nerves, DSouza reveals.

The glow heroes:Skinesis Stem Cell Collagen Activator Dhs685 Sarah Chapman at Harvey Nichols Dubai; Super Seed Supplement Dhs162 Votary

It appears that all of our supplement trails lead us back to something we can easily change our diet. There are certain nutrients that help us to get the look of glowing, healthier skin and slow down the ageing process, Hrdinova explains. Essentials are vitamin C, E, A, antioxidants, essential fatty acids, copper, zinc, selenium, but also vitamin B and iron. All these nutrients are available in a balanced diet. My advice for anybody who wants to have smoother and clearer complexion and glossy, silky hair is to eat healthy food including lots of fruit and vegetables, drink sufficient water, exercise frequently, get out in the fresh air, get proper rest and learn to manage your stress levels.

DSouza also champions a healthy lifestyle, promoting a balanced diet and cutting down on junk food. Cucumber and kale added to our diet has properties of naturally hydrating our skin, the nutrient silica is a trace mineral found in high levels inside cucumbers, she explains. Silica contributes to the growth and maintenance of connective tissue throughout your body.

We need to limit eating things in plastic or packets with long shelf life and eat more natural basic ingredients, she continues. If you cannot pronounce the additive or do not know the added preservative do not eat it.

Hrdinova echoes this saying, Excessive consumption of refined sugars and artificial sweetener and trans fats (fried food) can cause inflammation which may lead to a breakdown in collagen and elastin and have a negative impact on the skins strength and elasticity. Too much of caffeine from coffee or energy drinks have an impact on the hormonal levels in our body and may lead to breakouts of acne.

The only additional supplement DSouza would add for a glowing complexion is a probiotic at least with a minimum of 1 billion colony forming units and containing either genus Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium or Saccharomyces boulardii.

Looking at the busy skincare industry promising a miracle solution with every new launch, it is easy to become overwhelmed at the options that are before you. The bottom line, take a closer look at your diet, seek advice if you want to introduce supplements, and continue to enhance your skincare routine. A glowing and healthy complexion requires attention from all angles, especially if you want to achieve long-lasting results.

Special ring blessing held on hospital ward for mother with cancer who will miss daughter’s wedding – expressandstar.com

Lorraine Cheal has lung and brain cancer and is receiving palliative care at Walsall Manor Hospital.

Her daughter Melissa, age 27, is marrying her partner Jacob McCausland in December this year but knows her mum will not be able to make her big day.

So with the help of the hospital's care team and ward staff, the couple from Cannock visited Lorraine's bedside on Saturday with hospital Chaplain Anthony Swaby to perform a special ring blessing ceremony.

The bride had her wedding dress on and the groom was kitted out in his suit for the big day, while Lorraine and husband Ian also put on smart clothes.

Special needs teacher Melissa said it was an "unforgettable" day. She said her mother had never smoked or drank and had led a healthy lifestyle.

She said: "It meant such a lot to us because mum has been planning the wedding with me and was there when I chose my dress.

"It was important for us to make this memory with her and when we have our wedding in December we will make sure the video that my godmother took of today's ceremony plays a part.

"Mum smiled all the way through which was lovely as she wasnt so well yesterday. We feel blessed to have this opportunity and to be able to share something so special."

Groom Jacob, 26, a civil servant, added: "Melissa wore her wedding dress and the room had been decorated by staff; it seems a bit surreal as everything has happened so quickly. But it means so much to us both that this could be arranged."

Ward 7 Sister Laura Trow added: "Melissa looked absolutely beautiful, stunning. We send her and Lorraine all our love."

Intentionally Spreading COVID Could Be Treated as Terrorism – The Great Courses Daily News

By Jonny Lupsha, News Writer

According to The Washington Post, people intentionally spreading the coronavirus could be responded to by law-enforcement officials, using a surprising and very serious template. The Justice Departments second-highest ranking official told federal law enforcement officials across the country that they should consider using terrorism laws to investigate and prosecute those who try to intentionally infect others with COVID-19, the article said. The guidance came from a memorandum from Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey A. Rosen, addressing the many potential crimes prosecutors might encounter in the wake of the global pandemic.

Before his unfortunate passing earlier this year, Dr. Bruce E. Fleury, who was Professor of the Practice in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Tulane University, taught several lecture series for The Great Courses, including a course titled Mysteries of the Microscopic World. In that course, he shared his expert knowledge on microbial warfare, which would become particularly relevant in the time of coronavirus.

Humans have used disease as a weaponized agent since long before humans even knew what germs were.

The first known use of germ warfare was during the Anatolian War, around about 1320-1318 BCE, when the Hittites drove sheep and donkeys infected with tularemia into enemy territory, but the true masters of microbial mayhem were the Scythians, Dr. Fleury said. Herodotus tells us that the Scythians in the 4th century BCE, coated their arrows with a home brew that must have been swarming with nasty microbes, including, we think, those that cause tetanus and gangrene.

How did this happen? According to Dr. Fleury, they started by extracting venom from freshly killed vipers and separating the serum from human blood. After this, the Scythians mixed the blood serum with animal droppings and buried it in a leather pouch until it had thoroughly rotted. Then, they mixed the contents of the pouch with the snakes venom and the remains of its body. This pungent poison caused untold suffering for the enemies of the Scythians.

Later, warriors stopped relying on poisons and venom to wage germ warfare on their enemies. They realized that dead bodies were enough to sicken and kill them, leading to unpleasant and messy battle tactics.

The Romans and the Persians used to regularly poison their enemies by dumping dead animals into their wells, Dr. Fleury said. In 1155, the Holy Roman Emperor Barbarossa poisoned the wells of Tortona with the bodies of dead soldiers.

However, Dr. Fleury said, the Turkish army took this idea to a new and gruesome level in 1346 BCE. The Genoese controlled the Crimean city of Caffa on the Black Sea, which they acquired from the Mongols in 1266 BCE. The Genoese used Caffa as a port for trade, crushing their competition. The Mongols didnt take kindly to this.

In 1343, Jani Beg, the new Kahn of the Golden Horde, attacked Caffa with his Turkish mercenaries, Dr. Fleury said. After three years of siege, the Turks were completely fed up and suffering from plague, so they decided to use their own infected dead as weapons. They used catapults to launch the dead plague corpses into the city, until the defenders sickened and died.

Our understanding of the microscopic world has grown drastically even in the last century, so its little wonder that the Justice Department recommended taking COVID spreading so seriously. For now, though, humanity thankfully seems to be leaving the catapults at home.

This article contains material taught by Dr. Bruce E. Fleury. Dr. Fleury was Professor of the Practice in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Tulane University, where he previously earned his MS and PhD in Biology. He earned a BA from the University of Rochester in Psychology and General Science.

’90 Day Fianc’: Brittany Banks Reveals How She Really Feels About Living in Jordan – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

90 Day Fianc: The Other Way star Brittany Banks moved to Jordan to start her life with her fianc Yazan. So far, things havent exactly been smooth sailing thanks, in part, to their cultural differences.

Almost immediately after Brittany arrived in Jordan she and Yazan got into an argument because Brittany hugged some of the 90 Day Fianc crew members and packed alcohol in her bag, two things Yazan says he asked her not to do. However, despite what he said on camera, Brittany says Yazan never told her not to hug the crew or bring alcohol.

Seeing Yazan yell at me like that, it was super cringey. I dont like people yelling at me, especially a grown a*s man. Thats not cute to me, she told Entertainment Tonight on June 24.

RELATED: 90 Day Fianc: Brittany Says Yazan Treats Her Like an ObjectYoure Not Going to Talk to Me Like That

Though Brittany found Yazans behavior cringey, she didnt find it shocking and knew the outburst was out of character.

That behavior in that moment, it was shocking, but after dealing with my ex and, you know, I did, like, grow up for the most part in Palm Beach but I am from 79th street in Chicago, so not much scares me, she said. Hes usually very calm and very sweet and very understanding so I was like, You must need a nap or something.'

Brittanys time in Jordan might have gotten off to a rocky start but, so far, she told ET that she loves Jordan.

Jordans amazing, she said. I like the people, I like the culture. I like the different things it has to offer, the natural beauty of it, the deserts and all that stuff, she said.

The rapper went on to say that the country is different than she initially imagined.

When I went I was like, Wow, this is so different than what you would expect hearing on the news or something like that. They try to make it seem so bad and dirty and stuff but its not, she said.

Brittany also loves Yazans parents (though she hinted in the interview that there will be more family drama throughout the season). And she understands where theyre coming from.

I do love Yazans parents. I dont know exactly where his parents stand. I cant speak for them and I wont speak for them, but I will speak to say I love them and I do think they try their best to deal with the situations at hand with their experiences and their lifestyle, she said.

I think theyre just doing the best they can, and I dont blame them and thats their son, 100 percent, so thats their baby and I understand all of that, Brittany continued.
