The RADAR 127: Mixed by Matt Fax – Dancing Astronaut

by: Josh HymoJul 13, 2020

Matt Fax is on the front lines of progressive house music with the release his second studio album, Progressions. Released in April via Colorize, a sub-label of the Tritonal-led imprint, Enhanced Music, the 17-track project encapsulates refined bass, melodic soundscapes, and ambient leads alike. The LP arrived on the heels of Faxs provision of support for Jason Rosss 2019 United States tour and his headlining endeavors for global events such as ASOT 900 in the Netherlands.

Now, the French prodigy joins Dancing Astronaut for an exclusive RADAR mix, which will take listeners on a euphoric journey punctuated by the sounds of his latest extended body of work. Kicking off with smooth bass from Progressions Abenaki, Faxs mix includes some of the LPs standout tracks, including a collaboration with trance legend, BT. Fax also weaves in the Space Motion remix of BTs 1997 classic, Remember.

Check out Dancing Astronauts interview with Matt Fax, where he breaks down the ins and outs of the project.

The Drive-In Experience will be at outdoor locations near Stowmarket, Thetford and Chelmsford, and will run from July 30 through to September 6. It will offer live music, comedy, movies, laser shows and interactive games, as well as showcasing popular musical acts, artists and DJs, with ex-Pop Idol and West End star Gareth Gates headlining at two dates in Thetford and Chelmsford.

Those attending will watch entertainment on a performance stage and a huge high-tech hi-res LED screen from the comfort and security of their own cars, safe in their own bubbles with family or friends, while audio is delivered via FM frequency through car radios. All events will be run in line with strict Covid-19 social distancing guidelines.

The tour has been set up by East Anglian-based promoter Elliot White of Out of Space Events who said: We want our events to deliver a fun-packed day of entertainment for everyone involved; our goal is to bring people together to enjoy unique experiences and create fond memories with families and friends whilst helping create sustainable employment opportunities for future generations to come.

There will be four days of packed programmes at each location, running every day from noon through to 11pm. Each days events will start from 12-2pm with a family movie or games, ideal for families with younger children; then from 3.30pm to 4.45pm there will be a live tribute band/music act, and into the evening from 6.30pm to 8pm live comedy combined with a DJ set; and then from 9.30pm to 11pm more live music or a movie. This late session will be compred by a talented host and is expected to have a real festival party atmosphere.

The Drive-In Experience venues are at Stonham Barns near Stowmarket from July 30 to August 2; Euston Park outside Thetford from August 20 to 23 and Sandy Brook Fields in Chelmsford from September 3 to 6.

The entertainment will see appearances by live music acts including Kelly Llorenna formerly of N-Trance, Rozalla, Dario G, Urban Cookie Collective and Daft Funk Live, and other tribute acts covering the music of David Bowie, Beyonce and Bruno Mars as well as OASIS Maybe, Wrong Jovi and Kings of Lyon.

Singing star and recording artist Gareth Gates, who starred in musicals such as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Les Misrables and Legally Blonde after coming to prominence in the 2002 Pop Idol competition, will headline the 3.30pm show at Thetford on Sunday August 23, and the 9pm show at Chelmsford on Saturday September 5.

The movie offering will range from childrens favourites such as Mary Poppins Returns, The Lego Movie 2 and Sonic The Hedgehog, to blockbusters like Mamma Mia, Rocketman, Back To The Future and Grease.

There will also be interactive fun with an inventive take on TV game shows, pub quizzes and quickfire party games, with giveaways and prizes; while live laughs will come from acts such as hip-hop parody comic Mr B, Britains Got Talent comedian Ben Langley and comedy act The Squirrels; and exciting YouTube sensation Tiny Tim.

Social distancing measures will be in place at each location and will also enable event goers to watch the show from outside of their cars if they want to bring picnic chairs. Local food and drink providers will be on hand with orders either available for collection or delivered safe and securely straight to vehicles. The venues will be cash-free and all payments and ticketing will be contactless.

Handwashing stations and toilet facilities with clear safety messaging will also be in place with social distancing measures monitored by on-site staff.

Mr White said: The Drive-In Experience was created to bring a wide selection of entertainment to people who in challenging times want to come together and escape the monotony of everyday life to enjoy valuable times with friends and family in a safe and relaxed environment.

Our giant LED video wall will be one of the main attractions for these unique, state of the art, interactive takes on the ever popular Drive In events. These entirely contact-free performances will contribute in helping restart live events all around the country whilst adhering to government social distancing guidelines.

Tickets for each session cost 35 per car for up to five occupants, with additional occupants charged at 5 extra per person.

Ron Onesti: The sport of showbiz kings – Chicago Daily Herald

I always wondered what it was like to golf with those Hollywood legends who are identified with the sport almost as much as they are with showbiz!

I mean, I love to golf. Part of my daily workout routine is to hit a bucket o' balls at the local public course, then a half hour of putting practice. You would think I am pretty good because of that sort of regimen. Let's put it this way -- my handicap is the fact that I play the game! I am far from good, but at least I don't embarrass myself on the course (not very often!).

I am a player who goes out to enjoy the outdoors and the "get away from it all" aspect of the game, as well as the camaraderie with guys I play with. Who I am not is that focused player who hits a regular 300-yarder and gets upset with a bogey. I loved Bogey on the silver screen (especially in "Casablanca") and I love him on the course, too (one shot over par on ANY hole is a huge win for me)!

I remember a couple of entertainers who never went anywhere without a club in their hand: Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. When I think about it now, it seems sort of strange. Whether it was on a television variety show or USO military Christmas tour, those two were always "armed" with a driver, and not the kind behind the wheel of a Jeep!

And they always dressed the part. Bing always wore that same Stetson hat, the era's version of khaki pants, and a light sweater. Hope, always sporting a baseball cap, much of the time in tribute to a branch of the military.

One of my favorite pictures of the Great One, Jackie Gleason, shows him with his close buddy, golf legend Arnold Palmer (yes, the one who mixed lemonade and iced tea together). Jackie has a Newsboy hat on and that " and awayyyyy we go" look on his face. You gotta be old (like me) to remember that!

Speaking of Gleason and golf, who can forget the timeless "Honeymooners" skit when Ralph is all dressed up in plaid and knickers, and Ed Norton is trying to help him learn how to swing? Norton reads from the book: "Plant your feet firmly and address the ball." Ralph not understanding what is meant, Norton shows him what HE thinks it means. So Norton plants his feet firmly and says directly to the ball, "Hello Ball!" It never gets old.

Then there was the King of Cool, Dean Martin. I am lucky to be able to call Dean's daughter, Deana, my big sister. And she would regularly talk about her dad and his daily game. He would never rehearse his television shows, playing 18 to 36 holes during the day instead. When he was in Vegas, he would try to get out of hanging with Frank all night, just so he could get on the course early the next morning. He loved it.

And who can forget Johnny Carson and his theme song? It was written by a legend who has become "Uncle Paul" to me: Paul Anka. Paul told me the story that "Johnny's Theme" began as a song he wrote earlier in his career. When Carson contacted his friend to help him write a theme song for his new job, when taking over for Jack Paar on the "Tonight Show," they collaborated and came up with the iconic tune. He and Johnny would make about $200,000 a year each with royalties on the song, and it was played about 1.4 million times during Carson's 30-year stint, only to be retired when Johnny called it quits in 1992. And the song always ended with Johnny's famous golf swing!

Fast forward to rock 'n' rollers who also love the game. Probably the most famous rocker/golfer would have to be Alice Cooper. As we grew up with this devilish demon of death metal from my era, it was hard for us young fans to imagine him in his top hat, a snake around his neck, on the ninth green. But the reality is he satisfied his addictive personality with the sport when he got out of rehab. He credits the game with saving his life. Pretty powerful stuff!

Other guys who have frequented The Arcada and also like to bang their balls on a golf course include my close buddy Bret Michaels, Vince Neil of Motley Crue, Robby Kreiger of the Doors, Don Felder of the Eagles, Vince Gill, Stephen Stills and even Dweezil Zappa! There must be a scientific connection between a guitar and a 5 iron.

Yes, golf and show biz go hand in hand. It has definitely helped me get through a few select times when my head was about to explode! As I get older, Titleist has gotten as cool as Fender.

And while all this pandemic stuff is going on and we have no ticket sales to speak of, the only green I see these days is the one I see at the driving range!

Pumpkin Projects’ Valeria Miglioli: Too long we’ve been flooded with toys for a quick sale and no longevity – Toy News

Having spent 16 years heading up product development at Fiesta Crafts, Valeria Miglioli has made her return to the scene with a clear cut and defined message to present to the market; that this is an industry that should always strive to be better than what it was before.

Its in her latest reincarnation within the toy space that Miglioli now heads up the design consultancy she founded in recent months, Pumpkin Projects, to present the very messages that she believes are important for the improvement of not only the industry itself, but the way in which children learn and develop through play. Its why, under Pumpkin Projects, Migliolis time is now divided between not only designing and consulting on product design, but research into new ways of play.

After 16 years working at Fiesta, it was time to start something on my own where I could solely concentrate on developing toys with purpose, seeking out like-minded companies and individuals, nationally and internationally, that have the same passion as me for making toys that matter; that enrich, stimulate, and educate, she tells ToyNews.

I want to explore the use of a different perspective to design, one that cares about how things are made and why. One that values individuals and resources, and one that is dedicated to the longevity of the toy market.

Miglioli officially launched Pumpkin Projects at the end of 2019, and has in that time tackled topics ranging from the promotion of outdoor play and the furthering of the industrys knowledge and recognition of its potential role to play within it, to the circular economy, and its intrinsic link with the concept of imaginative, free play. Then, Covid-19 struck, and the product designer and researcher was forced to think out her strategies all over again.

Here, ToyNews catches up with Miglioli to discuss Pumpkin Projects and the many causes she is fighting for in the progression and improvement of the international toy industry.

Hello Valeria, many in the industry will know you from Fiesta Crafts. So, why is now the right time for you to be taking Pumpkin Projects to the next level?

At Fiesta I was in charge of all aspects of product development; I managed the research, analysis and idea generation, I sourced, liaised and negotiated with manufacturers, dealt with the safety aspects as well as inventing and designing the products. The knowledge I gained over the years has been invaluable, so I felt it was time for me to utilise my expertise and skills for what I consider meaningful and considered designs.

I want to explore the use of a different perspective to design, one that cares about how things are made and why. One that values individuals and resources, and one that is dedicated to the longevity of the toy market.

I officially launched Pumpkin Projects at the end of 2019 and have been involved with a variety of very exciting and diverse projects since the beginning, which has been fantastic. Fast forward a few months, and due to the coronavirus, I have had to reassess my original plans, but where there are challenges, there are also real positives and some amazing opportunities.

When we caught up, some of the topics you highlighted as areas of passion for you were free play, the circular economy, and outdoor learning. All of these no doubt resonate with many in the industry looking to innovate and incite change. What is it about these topics in particular that excite you?

Imaginative and free play have been at the core of my practice since the beginning. I have always believed this way of play is one of the most significant contributors to child development and wellbeing.

In my opinion, for too long the toy market has been flooded with toys made for a quick sale with no longevity. They are designed to grab the attention but engage children for just a short time before becoming inevitable landfill. We cannot continue like this.

Toys should be designed to allow children to build confidence, explore ideas and be creative. To take curiosity as far as it goes.

Children need the freedom to express themselves, they need the opportunity to make mistakes, get things wrong and then, of course, to discover a solution. I strongly believe in facilitating the development of essential skills through play. Toys can be made to help build resilience, learn about social skills, boost creativity, promote innovation and learn decision-making skills; all of this while having fun.

When it comes to the circular economy, I can say that I have been keen to implement a sustainable approach to toy design for quite some time; I think this is the responsible way to go, in fact, the only way to go. The more I research, the more passionately I feel about this and increasingly, I can see many possibilities for the toy industry.

Circular products, materials and businesses are taking shape more and more, disrupting business as usual with future-fit solutions that are better for people, the planet and profits. We need to make meaningful changes to the way we do things; this is the time to move forward and encourage a positive change across the whole network suppliers, manufacturers, customers and end consumers.

My consultancys foundation is based on solid research. One area of particular interest is studying different approaches to learning. Our education system, for obvious reasons, teaches in one way and everyone has to fit within that mould. I can see even from my own two boys that they learn in very different ways. Working with education specialists I can see there are some fantastic opportunities here to make a real difference.

I have become increasingly interested in the idea of outdoor learning. Denmark is a prime example of Uderskol. They have embraced outdoor activity in its schools for decades, several schools have even made it compulsory for outdoor learning to take place. Other pioneering countries such as Finland and New Zealand are also good examples. In the UK things are moving in the same direction, slowly, but at least it is a start. I am excited to see more of this as a standard way to teach/learn/experience as it has such positive implications across the board.

So lets explore the idea of outdoor learning some more. How has this area developed or hit upon a need to develop in the past year or so? Have the past three months sped things up a bit at all?

Outdoor learning has been around for at least 20 years in some countries. Over recent years, we have also seen some examples of outdoor learning in the UK. Unfortunately, it is not consistently practised in mainstream schools. Forest school is a good example, my children were able to attend a few days of forest school with their classes during last school year and they absolutely loved the experience. I know of schools which integrate woodlands/beach based learning weekly; but still, a very small percentage of children are fortunate enough to be able to take part in these activities.

It is important to note that it is not necessary to have large outdoor areas available even small spaces can help to bring learning alive, allowing exploration and creativity to take place in new ways.

Outdoor learning is not exclusively a way to connect with nature or being physically active. Research shows the benefits of learning in the outdoors, of how it can support the development of self-confidence, social skills, motivation and concentration, not to mention an improvement in language and communication skills.

It is increasingly being shown to be beneficial to the development of the whole child. Actually, Monica Guerra, professor of Human Sciences at the University of Milano-Bicocca sums it up beautifully. She says: Doing school outdoors amplifies the positive effects on learning and stimulates the cognitive and emotional processes that favour it. Children improve attention and concentration, improve their behaviour and the passion for learning is stimulated. Being outdoors is not a simple outlet, but a true ally for concentration.

Following lockdown and recent press coverage, there is probably a more mainstream knowledge of outdoor learning, although most people probably think the positive effects are limited to the open air (safer as opposed to being inside a classroom) and this being an easier way to practice social distancing between children; but there is so much more to it than that.

I am developing ideas for resources, toys, equipment and activities which can support all kinds of learning, but also encourage teamwork and be mentally stimulating. Im researching how the concept of outdoor learning can be applied to everyday life, especially for children living in cities.

The circular economy is a massive topic and one weve seen some of the biggest names attempt to tackle in their own ways. From the ground level how do you start to design this idea into products? How receptive to the message do you think the toy industry is at the moment?

As designers, we need to take a lead. Product design is front and centre of this; innovative design solutions need to consider the entire lifecycle of a product, from raw materials, through production, distribution and use, all the way to end-of-use recycling, repair-ability and disposal. This is something I am passionate about and I have undertaken extensive research into eco-design and looked at how this applies to my design process by asking: where are the main environmental impacts of specific products? What can be done at the design stage to minimise these impacts?

The toy industry is increasingly receptive to the sustainability message, as we have seen in recent years, but the circular economy goes far beyond recycling or the use of recycled materials. As well as the design of the products, we need to consider the design of the business model too. I am well aware this can be hard for smaller companies, but I am also seeing this as a great opportunity to engage with the end consumer in a new and positive way doing well by doing good.

There are also challenges because of the nature of the toy industry, with safety requirements being one of the main aspects, as well as the way mainstream toys are made and sold.

If the fashion industry (possibly the most seasonal industry of all) can make meaningful changes I have total trust in the toy industry as a whole going forward. Our best chance is with collaboration and change across the whole network from the suppliers and manufacturers, customers and end consumers.

Many companies will likely have to start by using an incremental approach and learning from each project to build their confidence, but I am positive we can get very close to a complete circular economy over time. Ultimately we will have even more new materials, technology developments andmore knowledge of the processes which will mean circular business will be more resilient, competitive and successful.

Wed be really interested to get your thoughts on free play. How do you tackle this topic from a design point of view? How are consumer mind-sets changing when it comes to free-play?

I have always believed this is the kind of play children get the most from. Since my time at university and my first experiences with toy design, and my many years with Fiesta, I have always focused on open-ended toys, toys that encourage the use of imagination and facilitate learning through play.

From a design point of view, my idea is to develop toys which have the potential of being tools that aid free play. Simpler toys allow for the highest creativity as these can be used in more than one way to encourage imagination, but this doesnt necessarily mean boring toys. But there are challenges, primarily getting the message across to parents. A branded, advertised easy to understand box on a shelf is much more readily picked up than a toy that requires explanation.

It is difficult to change consumer behaviour, although these ways of play and the toys used are ideal products for the children, it is difficult, at times, for adults to easily understand the real benefits. Will the ever-increasing online sales make this less of an issue? Is the new generation of parents/carers more aware and actively looking to support their children with this kind of play?

During lockdown, children have had more free time to experiment with free play and parents have had the chance of spending more time observing their children while playing. This, together with the opportunity of interacting together more as a family and discovering which toys or activities were a success or not, may well have established a deeper appreciation of the positives of free-play for the wider public. Parents are more likely to seek out new kinds of toys for learning and entertainment.

So how have the past three months have influenced change over the kind of toys children are looking for?

This is very hard to tell as this is completely dependent on the different experiences during the lockdown, the relationships within each family and personal circumstances. The market at the moment is in a very fluid state, things are changing quickly and, in this current climate, what is right boils down to how people are feeling right now so it is hard to predict what will be in the following months or next year.

But I can try to speculate on what I hope the future may bring: I think there will be a sense of nostalgia for old favourite toys and games and classic brands. New passions and experiences formed during lockdown will not disappear once the restrictions are eased. I want to believe family games and activities will still be seen with positivity. The rediscovery of the outdoors and exploring nature, regardless of the seasons, will be necessary for childrens physical and mental health. I also think that, despite the economic situation, consumers will be looking at better quality products and wont be scared off by higher prices if the value is there.

I am currently working on a research project titled The Changing Nature of Play during Lockdown what can we learn? with a leading social and cultural research studio. We want to gain insight into what families nationwide have learnt about how their children play and how the experience has changed the way they view toys. This will be a well-informed tool for creating better playing experiences for families hereafter.

Whats the next step for Pumpkin Projects? Who will you be looking to lead innovation and change in this sense from here?

I will be working on more research and implementation of the core areas I am passionate about with my designs. I hope to further collaborate with international brands looking at a different approach to design following this vision.

I hope to be instrumental for smaller manufacturers and individuals who may find the idea of making major changes to their current business and product design models overwhelming, or too disruptive.

I also aim to circulate the report on the research project we are undertaking about the changing nature of play, this will be key for insight-led product development for other companies in the toy industry, not only for my design practice.

I believe toys are a vital part of our society and toy companies help shape culture through what they choose to represent. As we progress, we should always strive to be better than we were before; we have the opportunity to be defined by what we do. I have complete trust the toy industry will be up for the challenge!

Readers Write: Racist letters have no place in this paper – Opinions – The Island Now

Lifelong Great Neck resident here, one among many who was disappointed to read yesterdays editorial essentially defending your publication of the nonsense (your words) and salacious (my words) opinion piece by Joan Swirsky. Where does one begin?

While I sympathize with your point about not having the resources to properly fact-checkknowing how under-funded and under-staffed media, especially local ones, are these daysI simply have to question your editorial judgment. What part of Ms. Swirksys piece did you think was fit to print? Was it her disparagement of public education, in the newspaper of a town that prides itself on having one of the top public school systems in the country? Or was it the tantalizing title that drew you in, obvious clickbait that would bring more readers to your site? Anyone in any editorial position would take one look at that title alone and surmise that its only purpose was to stir division.

Dont know what camp you fall into but in my book, racial justiceand quite frankly, all areas of human rightsisnotand should not be a partisan issue. If these last six weeks have revealed anything, it is that everyone, regardless of their background or political affiliation, is responsible for both the longevity and thus the dismantling of the corrosive systems that divide us; anything less, neutral, or to the contrary reinforces those power structures that doomed this nation from the start. Running a well-argued piece about how Republican policies may help Black Americans? I may be intrigued! Running a piece that leans on overt racist stereotypes about Black Americans to further a conservative agenda? Part of the problem.

To that point, Id also like to call your attention to the piece of this editorial that identified Ms. Swirskys piece as at least not explicitly racist. This is, first, categorically untrue, apropos the aforementioned reliance on racial stereotypes (e.g., the welfare queen). But it also makes me wonder: What do you consider to be explicit racism? Is implicit racism alright with you, and does it fit with the ideals of the publication you run? Are you unaware of the lasting psychological harmthat racial stereotypes and microaggressions can leave on Black Americans and other Americans of color? What is less harmful about allowing a white resident to wield inane stereotypes about Blackness to bolster her claim to know anything about the plight of Black Americans compared to our Embarrassment of a President retweeting a video of white supremacists chanting All Lives Matter? Did you ever once consider how somealready-alienatedBlack residents of Great Neck might feel reading a piece like Ms. Swirskys? These arent rhetorical questions, I am genuinely curious to know.

But the most confusion piece of your editorial came in the concluding paragraphs:

Perhaps after the construction of Confederate statutes, the naming of military bases after traitors who attacked the United States government to protect slavery and decades of race-baiting politicians a letter in our papers would make a difference in the promotion of racism. But we dont think censoring bad ideas serves democracy best.

It is lost on me why you would think to compare journalism to the erection of Confederatestatues(which, by the way, is the correct term for a constructed monument;statutesrefer to written laws passed by a legislative body). Im actually not even sure what you are trying to say here, given the general lack of coherence, but I have read this in two ways. Either one, you have only now just begun to consider the possibility that giving voice to hateful ideas (and poorly argued ones at that) in your publication continues our countrys long and painful tradition of glorifying racist people and power structures. This would make your publication of pieces like Ms. Swirskys, at best, a pitiful lapse in editorial judgment.

But I cannot help but read this tone as being somewhat tongue-in-cheek, a confession that you do not believe the contents of your own paper make a difference. It is baffling that a newspaper editor would undermine the efficacy of its own publication in an editorial that, on the whole, makes a claim for the protection of the First Amendment right to free speech of all kinds, an amendment that allows publications like this one to exist. By this interpretation, your statement makes it painfully clear how you allowed such an egregiously offensive piece to run: Even you do not think the contents of your own newspaper matter.

Most of all, I am struggling to understand the logic behind your argument that in order to defend democracy, we must make space for ideas and thoughts that are not only antithetical to that ideal, but that directly undermine it. I love words; I believe in words. But I also believe the word democracy has become somewhat empty: yes, an ideal on which this country was founded, but one that has become abstracted to absurdity by conservatives and members of the far-right, under the guise of upholding systems under which democracy has failed.

It is not that I think democracy as an idealone that advocates for liberty and justice for allis a pipe dream; it is just that, as it stands now, it is still just an ideal, a distant hope that has yet to be realized. Remember that when our founding fathers founded this government as a democracy, its definition was limited to white men of property; still today, it is a word behind which our leadersgenerally similarly privileged cisgender heterosexual white menhave hidden in order to stall progress. And while people like Ms. Swirsky may believe we have achieved equality, everything from the last six weekshell, the last four yearshas proven otherwise. So please forgive me if I think wielding democracy as a defense in support of your failures on the job a weak debate tactic.

Simple request: the next time you think of publishing a navel-gazing piece about the purpose of journalism todefend your inability to properly do your job, please just do your job instead.

Peter Beinart is neither a Zionist nor a Liberal – Ynetnews

Beinart is the High Priest of the Jewish American left. He is also J Streets' unofficial ideolog. His is a perplexing notion.

You can argue about the rights of the Kurds to have an independent state or the Catalans, but there is no precedent in these times, to rescind an already existing state.

We clashed Beinart and I in 2005 in London, in a public debate. He presented the positions of a liberal Zionist, so I chose not to remind him of the pogrom tweet. Afterall one can make a mistake. A liberal Zionist is a person who has criticism of the Israeli government but does not deny its right to exist. A liberal is respectful of the right for self-determination on both sides. Beinart is no Zionist and is certainly not a liberal.

Not all of Beinart's claims are invalid. The settler movement has been trying to bring about a one-state solution to the question of the West Bank and enjoy the support of part of the Israeli government.

They are promoting the notion that the settlement movement has succeeded in upending the chances for a two-state solution, but that is not the case.

Today the settlements occupy 1.5% of the West Bank and have municipal reserves that would include 7.9% of the territory. Most Israelis oppose even a partial annexation unless it is part of a peace deal.

Ma'ale Adumin settlement on the West Bank

(: AFP)

But Beinart is throwing the baby away with the bathwater. He negates the rights of Jews to an independent state because a minority of them oppose the rights of Palestinians to have the same. He supports the far-right policies of settlers from his position on the left. The French call it " Les extrmes se touchent," The opposite ends meet.

Beinart refuses to explain how what had failed in Yugoslavia, that broke apart into seven separate entities after decades of unity, would work for Israelis and Palestinians, and how what is failing in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Somalia, Libya, and is barely hanging on in Belgium would thrive between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea.

In what reality could two groups that have so much animosity, follow different religions, different languages, culture, and tradition succeed in existing in peace and harmony?

The situation we are living with now, which is in need of change, would seem like heaven on earth compared to the nightmarish prospect of a one-state solution.

Calls to exterminate Jews come not only from the Hamas terror group. They can be heard from members of the Palestinian Authority including its religious leader, who like his predecessor in the 1930s the pro-Nazi Amin al-Husseini, calls not only for the destruction of Israel but the extermination of Jews.

Beinart is mum in the face of those calls.

The Middle East is ripe with conflicts of national, ethnic, tribal, and religious groups waging war, slaughtering each other. But Beinart is mum in the face of that too.

Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, President Clinton and Yasser Arafat sign the Oslo Accords at the White House

(Photo: Reuters)

These words were soon followed by a massive wave of terror attacks. Beinart wrote nothing about that. Nor did he write about the Palestinian rejection of former prime minister Ehud Barak's offer of an independent Palestinian state in 2,000, or their rejection of the Clinton initiative to end the conflict - that same year, or the solution offered by Ehud Olmert when he was prime minister in 2008. They also rejected President Obama's proposal in 2014.

Why does Beinart only hold the Jews responsible for the ongoing Israeli control of the West Bank? Why has he never laid blame on the Palestinians? Relieving them from any responsibility is racist and condescending.

Jews have lived side by side with Moslems before. It had most often ended with persecution and expulsion. How can it now be expected to work? How can he and the far-right settlers believe that one big state would succeed where no other similar political entity had?

The Islamist movement Hamas is already gaining strength among Palestinians and according to the latest polling has 41% support. Is this terrorist group now expected to become part of a democratically governed entity?

A clear majority of Israelis and Palestinians reject the notion of a one-state solution that will end the conflict. But Beinart pays no attention to that fact because he believes his idea would invigorate the Palestinian cause. But to what end?

He is not motivated by a respect for the rights of both sides, he is fighting against the rights of one nation, out of all the nations in the world.

-A Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement's demonstration in New York

His words carry weight in some quarters in the West but there is nothing new in his message. The Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement (BDS) campaign for the same thing and has been rejected as anti-Semitic by the European Union, the German parliament, the British Labour Party and elsewhere.

Denying the right of Jews to a national homeland is anti-Semitism.

Beinart is not Anti-Semitic. His intentions are different, but his position assists the anti-Semitic campaign.

A one-state solution works when it is made up of two nations that share the same roots, religion, language, and culture. Even the same family. Jordan's population that includes a Palestinian majority is a case in point. You would be hard-pressed to find the differences among Jordanians. Not that Beinart has considered that option.

He is not motivated by concern for the Palestinians or their rights. He is following the herd of anti-Zionists that has overtaken progressive thinking and is based on an industry of lies.

Beinart's column is another small win for the Israeli far-right and some Palestinians, who oppose to a two-state solution. He is not promoting peace and reconciliation.

The far-right deals in action as they work to achieve this nightmarish vision of one great state now supported by Beinart's words and ideas as part of their own propaganda.

Liberals rejected 1,000 voters in its leadership race. One of them is questioning why – CBC.ca

Robyn LeGrow is among the thousand-odd people rejected by the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador to vote for its next leader. (Peter Cowan/CBC)

Some people registered to vote in Newfoundland and Labrador's Liberal Party leadership race are being ousted from the process, and left questioning the party's reasoning why.

Among the rejected is Robyn LeGrow of St. John's,who two weeks ago posted on herpersonal Facebook account a critique of candidate Andrew Furey's campaign policies.

"I can only assume that that is why I have been disqualified. I had no idea when I put that post out on my personal page, to my personal friends, that it would get as much attention as it has," LeGrow told CBC News on Wednesday.

The party is informing the former voters via email.

"We want to thank you for your interest in the Liberal Party and this election. However, our records indicate that you do not support the aims and objectives of the Liberal Party of NL. As a result, you have been found ineligible to vote," reads an emailwritten byLewis Stoyles, chief returning officer of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador leadership election.

The upcoming party vote will elect its nextleader and the province's next premier on Aug. 3 ahead of a provincialgeneral election which will be called within the next year.

LeGrow took to Twitter Wednesday morning with her concerns, with many people commenting that they, too, have received rejection notices.

Emails being sent to rejected voters include an opt-inreview process by the party.

"If our records are incorrect or you wish to have this decision reviewed, please respond to this email by9:00 PM (NST) on July 8, 2020," the email from Stoyles reads.

That leavesmany, includingLeGrow, with less than 12 hours before the deadline for appeal closes.

An appeals process will continue throughout the rest of the week, according to Judy Morrow, a member of the leadership election committee and past president of the Liberal Party in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The first part of the appeals involvesasking Stoylesto review thedecisionthat rendered the voterineligible. If the voter is not satisfied, then they have an opportunity to make an appeal to the party's appeals committee, which wasput in place in February.

The party plans to have a finalized list of voters by July 14, with voting starting onJuly 28.

LeGrowistaking the party up on its appeals offer, and says she has notified them she'll be pursuing it.

"My concern is that communications all along haven't been consistent," she said.

"It seems to me that they are creating the rules as they go, making decisions and then responding to them based on feedback from people who are on the other end of those decisions."

On Wednesday afternoon, the Liberal Party held a virtual news conference for anupdate on the election process.

Since voter registration closed on June 25, the election committee has been going through what its calling a "multi-faceted vetting process." Thatincludedcalls and email blasts to verify and authenticate registered voters, and waspartnered with a research company.

As of Wednesday roughly 33,500 voters have been designated eligible, according to Morrow, who took questions from reporters.

When asked if the vetting process included the research company combing through social media accounts of registered voters to find past comments which could find them in the ineligible category, Morrow said no.

"They were just given pure lists from our Liberal list database," she said.

Morrow saidanyone who signed up with the party to vote for itsleadership, and in a follow up robocallsaid they would vote for any other party, were automatically disqualified from voting.

Anyone who said they didn't support the aims of objectives of the Liberal Party were also disqualified. Those categories addedup to about 300 people.

There were about 1,000 ineligible voters total, Morrow said.

"They were for various reasons. That could be because their date of birth was missing, or they didn't have an email or telephone number, or they were no longer a resident of the province," she said.

"We found some individuals who had been deceased. There were different reasons for knockouts."

Hillsdale College stands out for its courage in face of liberal onslaught – Washington Times

ANALYSIS/OPINION:

In the July 2nd issue of National Review, Victor Davis Hanson, in bemoaning our present state of cultural chaos, asks, How can so many so sheltered and prolonged adolescents claim to be all-knowing? In other words, how could so many of our nations 18-year-olds become so clueless?

The answer: Your colleges and universities have taught them to be.

The proof of the ivory towers culpability in creating this marauding monster is seen in the endless list of apologies now pouring forth from our academic leaders. Here are a couple of examples.

Threatened by Black Lives Matter discontent, a university president in Oklahoma informs his community, [Beginning immediately], our employees will reengage in training and development to build cultural competency and understand the role and impact of unconscious bias.

Another college president from California adds his lament: I want to offer a sincere, heartfelt, and anguished apology I want to ask for forgiveness for my lack of sensitivity, lack of nuance, and lack of perspective concerning Black Lives Matter.

And yet another president from an institution in Kansas writes, It is time to repent [for the] prejudice embedded deeply into the very construction of a society that benefits some at the expense of others

Anguished apologies. Heartfelt tears. Repentance for the very construction of society. Mandatory training in unconscious bias. One has to wonder if a Google search of capitulation would immediately bring these three men to the forefront as its poster-children.

But amid such fecklessness, one college stands alone, resolute, bold, distinct and different.

Consider Hillsdale College.

When pressured by the same juvenile hoards to issue similar statements as cited above, this colleges leadership responded as follows:

Amidst the events of recent weeks, a number of alumni and others have taken up formal and public means to insist that Hillsdale College issue statements concerning Black Lives Matter.

[We are] told that failure to issue [such] statements is an abandonment of principle.

Well, Hillsdale Colleges founding is a statement

[Our] curriculum is a statement, especially in its faithful presentation of the Colleges founding mission.

[Our] teaching is a statement, especially as it takes up with vigor the evils we are alleged to ignore, evils like murder, brutality, injustice, destruction of person or property, and passionate irrationality

Organizing our practical affairs so that we can maintain principles of equity and justice is a statement.

Dispensing unparalleled financial help to students who cannot afford even a moderate tuition is a statement.

Helping private and public schools across the country lift their primary and secondary students out of a sea of disadvantages with excellent instruction, curricula, and the civic principles of freedom and equality without any recompense to the College is a statement.

Postgraduate programs with the express aim of advancing the ideas of human dignity, justice, equality, and the citizen as the source of the governments power, these are all statements.

And all of these statements are acts, deeds that speak, undertaken and perpetuated now, every day, all the time. Everything this College does is for the moral and intellectual uplift of all.

There may be something deafening in the culture certainly there are those who cannot hear but it is not from the silence of Hillsdale College.

There is a kind of virtue that is cheap. It consists of jumping on cost-free bandwagons of public feeling and winning approval by espousing the right opinion

The fact that very real racial problems are now being cynically exploited for profit, gain, and public favor by some organizations and people is impossible to overlook.

It is a scandal and a shame that compounds our ills and impedes their correction. Hillsdale College, though far from perfect, will continue to do the work of education in the great principles that are, second only to divine grace, the solution to the grave ills that beset our times.

This is so good it bears repeating:

There is a kind of virtue that is cheap. It consists of jumping on cost-free bandwagons of public feeling [T]he fact that very real racial problems are now being cynically exploited for profit, gain, and public favor by some organizations and people is impossible to overlook. Thank you, Hillsdale College. As nearly every other university president in the nation cowers in feckless fear before the tantrums of the spoiled children they have created, you lead.

Thank God for your clarity. Though you stand alone, you stand. Would that other colleges show half your courage. For, if they did, we wouldnt be in the mess were in.

‘NOS4A2’ Season 2 Episode 4: Wayne must throw away candy cane taken from Manx, angry fans say ‘you had one job – MEAWW

Spoilers for 'NOS4A2' Season 2 Episode 4 'The Lake House'

This episode was a very daunting one, with Tabitha Hutter (Ashley Romans) almost dying, the McQueen-Carmody family in hiding, and Charlie Manx (Zachary Quinto) visiting Wayne McQueen (Jason David) in his dreams. Vic McQueen (Ashleigh Cummings) has always been overprotective of her son, and her obsession with making sure that Manx doesn't kidnap Wayne and take him to Christmasland resulted in her drinking again, and running way from her family to kill Manx.

The stress seems to have gotten to Wayne, who is tired of his circumstances, and wants a "regular mom." Fans, although sympathetic to the little boy, were upset with the fact he refuses to listen to his mother and stay away from Manx. "#NOS4A2 Manx is not a good man Wayne. Charlie only wants to use you. The only reason your mom is messed up is all because of Manx. Hes a bad influence only wanting to use you to feed his power," tweeted a fan.

If you remember Episode 3 titled 'The Night Road,' where Manx almost got Wayne into the Wraith, Manx had given the little innocent boy a candy cane. Wayne has loved that candy cane since then, and it seems as though it is through this that Manx was able to speak to Wayne in his dreams. In one of his trances where his physical body is with his family and his mind is with Manx, he complains about how he doesn't want to hide anymore as Manx invites him into Christmasland. Manx is fishing for the location where Wayne and his family are hiding. It is then that Vic finds the candy cane and asks Wayne about it. "WAYNE U HAD ONE JOB.... #NOS4A2," wrote a fan speaking of the fact that all Wayne had to do was do nothing with Manx yet he kept the candy cane. "Got dammit Wayne! If you dont throw that candy cane away #NOS4A2," wrote another frustrated fan.

The conversation between mother and son ended up being a harsh one with fans tweeting, "Wayne bout ungrateful as hell.... #NOS4A2." Another one wrote. "#NOS4A2 What the heck, Wayne?! Those were some brutal words you just said to your mom."

"You lie, you disappear and you make dad sad. You suck. I want a regular mom with a regular home," Wayne had told his mom who had only told him, yet again, to not take anything from Manx. Even worse, during his last trance, Wayne had ended up telling Manx, "we are at grandpa's house," another thing he was not supposed to do. "Dont do it Wayne nooooooooo why #[emailprotected]," wrote another fan. 'NOS4A2' Season 2 episodes air on Sundays at 10 pm ET on AMC.

Avalon GloboCare Provides Updates on its Lead Scientific and Clinical Programs in CAR T-Cell Therapy and COVID-19 – GlobeNewswire

FREEHOLD, N.J., July 13, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Avalon GloboCare Corp. (NASDAQ: AVCO), a clinical-stage global developer of cell-based technologies and therapeutics, today announced an update on its four scientific research and clinical development programs in cell therapy and COVID-19 related initiatives, including AVA-001 and AVA-011 (FLASH-CAR), that leverage individualized CAR (Chimeric Antigen Receptor) T-cell therapy for immuno-oncology, as well as AVA-Trapfor mitigating COVID-19 cytokine storm, and S-layer based COVID-19 vaccine development.

AVA-001

Avalon has successfully completed a Phase I first-in-human clinical study of its leading CAR T-cell therapy candidate, AVA-001 (National Institute of Health clinical trial registration number: NCT03952923). AVA-001 is a third generation CAR T-cell therapy which involves the 4-1BB (or CD28) co-stimulation signaling pathway. Nine out of ten patients with relapsed/refractory B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) have achieved complete remission (CR rate of 90%) within one month after receiving one dose of AVA-001 CAR T-cell therapy. The treatment with AVA-001 was generally well tolerated with minimal adverse side effects: no neurotoxicity or greater than Grade-1 cytokine release syndrome was observed in this cohort of patients treated with AVA-001. All patients who achieved CR successfully proceeded to allogeneic bone marrow transplant with curative intent. Accessory laboratory testing that accompanied this pilot clinical study has demonstrated evidence of enhancement in CAR T cell persistence and protection against CAR T cell exhaustion. This paradigm of bridging CAR T-cell therapy to bone marrow transplant creates a new therapeutic horizon with curative potential for patients with relapsed/refractory B-ALL and other hematologic cancers. Avalon is in the process of extending AVA-001 CAR T-cell therapy to the next phases of clinical development.

AVA-011 (FLASH-CAR)

Avalons FLASH-CARuses next generation CAR technology to modify patients T-cells and natural killer (NK) cells using a ribonucleic acid (RNA)-based platform rather than a viral vector.Avalons RNA-based CAR technology is designed to rapidly create personalized CAR therapies in 1 to 2 days compared to the 10- to 14-day bio-manufacturing time necessary to generate currently available CAR-T cellular immunotherapy. Avalons FLASH-CARtechnology is also designed to reprogram the immune cells to hone in on multiple crucial cancer cell targets, called tumor antigens, to potentially achieve superior therapeutic effect. Avoiding the use of viral vectors and complicated bio-processing procedures significantly reduces manufacturing costs, resulting in a more affordable and potentially breakthrough therapy for cancer patients. The FLASH-CARtechnology can also be used to generate off-the-shelf, universal cell therapy that has the potential to reach even more patients. Avalons first FLASH-CARplatform candidate, AVA-011, targets both CD19 and CD22 tumor antigens on cancer cells. Pre-clinical research on AVA-011, including tumor cytotoxicity studies, has been successfully completed and Avalon is immediately entering the process development stage to generate clinical-grade CAR-T and CAR-NK cells for use in human clinical trials. Avalon expects to begin a first-in-human clinical trial with AVA-011 for the treatment of relapsed/refractory B-cell lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma in the first quarter of 2021. The goal is to apply AVA-011 as a bridge to bone marrow stem cell transplant therapy with curative potential for patients with these blood cancers.

Avalon GloboCare, has established the Avalon Combat COVID-19 Taskforce (ACCT) to expand and accelerate scientific/clinical development on multiple fronts to help combat the COVID-19 global pandemic through a strategic combination of therapeutic and vaccine approaches as follows:

AVA-Trap

Avalon has engaged with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to co-develop a QTY therapeutic platform against the cytokine storm which causes lung damage and other organ failure associated with COVID-19. Cytokines are small protein molecules in the body required to regulate and maintain proper physiological functions. In some life-threatening diseases, however, cytokines are released in vast excess (also known as cytokine storm) leading to devastating damage to vital tissues and organs. A prime example is the widely recognized SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19)-induced cytokine storm, which can lead to acute respiratory distress syndrome, lung fibrosis, multi-organ failure and death. The pre-clinical result has been published in the journal QRB Discovery (Cambridge University Press). Three USPTO provisional patents have been filed based on the unique QTY code protein design platform that uses six water-soluble variant cytokine receptors which have been successfully designed and tested to show binding affinity to the respective cytokines. Avalons AVA-Trap therapeutic program is currently entering animal model testing followed by expedited clinical studies with the goal of providing an effective therapeutic option to combat COVID-19 and other life-threatening conditions involving cytokine storms.

Intranasal and Oral COVID-19 Candidate Vaccine

Formed a strategic partnership program between Avalon GloboCare and the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) in Vienna, Austria. The goal is to co-develop an S-layer vaccine that can be administered by an intranasal or oral route against SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19). This partnership is led by BOKUs Professor Uwe B. Sleytr, an eminent member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, who is a pioneer of applied surface layer (S-layer) nanotechnology, based on the repetitive protein structures that make up the outer surface of microbial cells. This vaccine strategy has the dual advantages of ease of manufacturing and delivery. The candidate vaccine is derived from a fusion of an S-layer viral particle mimic with the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and could be delivered non-invasively via the nasal or oral passageways, rather than a needle-based injection into the muscle or under the skin. The S-layer protein-based vaccine is expected to both decrease the severity of a SARS-CoV-2 infectionpreventing the more severe respiratory inflammation and organ damage seen in many COVID-19 patientsand build immunity against the virus. Substantial progress has been made by developing the proprietary techniques necessary to synthesize conjugate vaccines consisting of an S-layer artificial viral envelope linked to a viral antigen, eliciting immune-protective antibody responses. Avalon plans to complete the proof-of-concept pre-clinical studies in 2020, followed by first-in-human clinical study of this candidate vaccine during 2021. In addition, Avalon plans to utilize S-layer technology to accelerate additional vaccine programs for other respiratory infections including different strains of the flu (influenza A/B), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and other viruses. Avalon is also actively exploring other practical uses of S-layer technology including targeted drug delivery, diagnostic devices, and therapeutic applications.

We are excited and encouraged by the progress in advancing our scientific and clinical programs targeting immune-oncology and COVID-19, stated David Jin, M.D., Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Avalon GloboCare. As an active, clinical-stage company with innovative technology, productive partnerships and exceptional talent, we are committed to delivering effective execution and leadership to combat cancer and COVID-19, added Dr. Jin.

Could induced pluripotent stem cells be the breakthrough genetics has been waiting for? – The New Economy

Embryonic stem cells. The ethical issues associated with stem cell research could be resolved through the use of induced pluripotent stem cells, which are derived from fully committed and differentiated cells of the adult body

The almost miraculous benefits that stem cells may one day deliver have long been speculated on. Capable of becoming different types of cells, they offer huge promise in terms of transplant and regenerative medicine. It is, however, also a medical field that urges caution one that must constantly battle exaggeration. If stem cells do in fact hold the potential to reverse the ageing process, for example, then such breakthroughs remain many years away.

Recently, though, the field has had cause for excitement. In 2006, Japanese researcher Shinya Yamanaka discovered that mature cells could be reprogrammed to become pluripotent, meaning they can give rise to any cell type of the body. In 2012, the discovery of these induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) saw Yamanaka and British biologist John Gurdon awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Since then, there has been much talk regarding the potential iPSCs possess, not only for the world of medicine, but for society more generally, too.

A big stepHistorically, one of the major hurdles preventing further research into stem cells has been an ethical one. Until the discovery of iPSCs, embryonic stem cells (ESCs) represented the predominant area of research, with cells being taken from preimplantation human embryos. This process, however, involves the destruction of the embryo and, therefore, prevents the development of human life. Due to differences in opinion over when life is said to begin during embryonic development, stem cell researchers face an ethical quandary.

The promise of significant health benefits and new revenue streams has led some clinics to offer unproven stem cell treatments to individuals

With iPSCs, though, no such dilemmas exist. IPSCs are almost identical to ESCs but are derived from fully committed and differentiated cells of the adult body, such as a skin cell. Like ESCs, iPSCs are pluripotent and, as they are stem cells, can self-renew and differentiate, remaining indefinitely propagated and retaining the ability to give rise to any human cell type over time.

One important distinction to make is that both ESCs and iPSCs do not exist in nature, Vittorio Sebastiano, Assistant Professor (Research) of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (Reproductive and Stem Cell Biology) at Stanford Universitys Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, told The New Economy. They are both beautiful laboratory artefacts. This means that at any stage of development, you cannot find ESCs or iPSCs in the developing embryo, foetus or even in the postnatal or adult body. Both ESCs and iPSCs can only be established and propagated in the test tube.

The reason neither ESCs nor iPSCs can be found in the body is that they harbour the potential to be very dangerous. As Sebastiano explained, these cells could spontaneously differentiate into tumorigenic masses because of their intrinsic ability to give rise to any cell type of the body. Over many years of research, scientists have learned how to isolate parts of the embryo (in the case of ESCs) and apply certain culture conditions that can lock cells in their proliferative and stem conditions. The same is true for iPSCs.

To create iPSCs, scientists take adult cells and exogenously provide a cocktail of embryonic factors, known as Yamanaka factors, for a period of two to three weeks. If the expression of such factors is sustained for long enough, they can reset the programme of the adult cells and establish an embryonic-like programme.

Turning back the clockThere is already a significant body of research dedicated to how stem cells can be used to treat disease. For example, mesenchymal stem cells (usually taken from adult bone marrow) have been deployed to treat bone fractures or as treatments for autoimmune diseases. It is hoped that iPSCs could hold the key for many more treatments.

Global stem cell market:25.5%Expected compound annual growth rate (2018-24)$467bnExpected market value (2024)

IPSCs are currently utilised to model diseases in vitro for drug screening and to develop therapies that one day will be implemented in people, Sebastiano explained. Given their ability to differentiate into any cell type, iPSCs can be used to differentiate into, for example, neurons or cardiac cells, and study specific diseases. In addition, once differentiated they can be used to test drugs on the relevant cell type. Some groups and companies are developing platforms for cell therapy, and I am personally involved in two projects that will soon reach the clinical stage.

Perhaps the most exciting prospects draw on iPSCs regenerative properties. Over time, cells age for a variety of reasons namely, increased oxidative stress, inflammation and exposure to pollutants or sunlight, among others. All these inputs lead to an accumulation of epigenetic mistakes those that relate to gene expression rather than an alteration of the genetic code itself in the cells, which, over time, results in the aberrant expression of genes, dysfunctionality at different levels, reduced mitochondrial activity, senescence and more besides. Although the epigenetic changes that occur with time may not be the primary cause of ageing, the epigenetic landscape ultimately affects and controls cell functionality.

What we have shown is that, if instead of being expressed for two weeks we express the reprogramming factors for a very short time, then we see that the cells rejuvenate without changing their identity, Sebastiano said. In other words, if you take a skin cell and express the reprogramming genes for two to four days, what you get is a younger skin cell.

By reprogramming a cell into an iPSC, you end up with an embryonic-like cell the reprogramming erases any epigenetic errors. If expressed long enough, it erases the epigenetic information of cell identity, leaving embryonic-like cells that are also young.

Slow and steadyAs with any scientific advancement, financial matters are key. According to Market Research Engine, the global stem cell market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 25.5 percent between 2018 and 2024, eventually reaching a market value of $467bn. The emergence of iPSCs has played a significant role in shaping these predictions, with major bioscience players, such as Australias Mesoblast and the US Celgene, working on treatments involving this particular type of stem cell.

The business potential around stem cell research is huge, Sebastiano told The New Economy. [Particularly] when it comes to developing cell banks for which we have detailed genetic information and, for example, studying how different drugs are toxic or not on certain genetic backgrounds, or when specific susceptibility mutations are present.

Unfortunately, even as the business cases for iPSC treatments increase, a certain degree of caution must be maintained. The promise of significant health benefits and new revenue streams has led some clinics to offer unproven stem cell treatments to individuals. There have been numerous reports of complications emerging, including the formation of a tumour following experimental stem cell treatment in one particular patient, as recorded in the Canadian Medical Association Journal last year. Such failures risk setting the field back years.

The challenge for researchers now will be one of balance. The potential of iPSCs is huge both in terms of medical progress and business development but can easily be undermined by misuse. Medical advancements, particularly ones as profound as those associated with iPSCs, simply cannot be rushed.
