Grooveyards self-titled album impresses – The Daily Star

While 'genre-free' bands have existed for quite a while, it is Grooveyard-- a project by Ashifur Rahman Chowdhury, Zunayed Sabbir Ahmed and Dewan Anamul Hasan that truly solidified its merit in the context of this country. The band put out their self-titled album recently, with adoration from band music fans. The seven tracks exhibit seven different flavours, which is a rare feat for an album made by just three people. "We love to mesh different genres", says Ashifur, who was the vocalist of rock band Black at one point, "If you listen to Losing Control, it starts off with a reggae vibe and transitions into more traditional rock. All our musical inspirations growing up has an effect in our sound." Songs like Raining Sun, Edge of the World, Lifeline and Reach out are all proof of just how far the indie music industry has progressed. "Our songs are in English because as lofty as it sounds, we want international reach. We want to travel the world and play music together," says the vocalist. Ashifur emphasised the need to support local acts, for them to grow out of their moulds and reach their true potential. "Bands like Dads in the Park, Eida and Attic are doing exceptionally well, and I am all but sure that this entire scene will be elevated and reach the international audience," he adds. The songs are available in all the major streaming sites, including Spotify and GAAN app. They can also be listened to on Grooveyard's official YouTube channel.

Jordan King Warns That Israel’s Annexation Plans Jeopardize Regional Peace – The New York Times

AMMAN Jordan's King Abdullah warned on Monday that any unilateral Israeli moves to annex territory in the occupied West Bank would fuel instability and dim hopes of a final settlement of the decades-old Arab-Israeli conflict.

The monarch told British lawmakers the only path to a comprehensive and lasting Middle East peace was the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on land captured by Israel in the 1967 war, and with East Jerusalem as its capital.

"Any unilateral Israeli measure to annex lands in the West Bank is unacceptable, as it would undermine the prospects of achieving peace and stability in the Middle East," the monarch was quoted in a palace statement as telling British foreign and defence parliamentary committee members in a virtual meeting.

Jordan has led a diplomatic campaign along with most other European countries that opposes Israeli plans that envisage annexing parts of the occupied West Bank as part of a deal being promoted by U.S. President Donald Trumps administration.

King Abdullah, a staunch U.S. ally, has also in recent months warned that Israeli policies along with Trump's peace plan would lead to conflict and deal a blow to Israeli-Jordanian relations.

Amman lost the West Bank including East Jerusalem to Israel during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. Jordan is the second Arab country after Egypt to sign a peace treaty with Israel and many of its more than 7 million citizens are of Palestinian origin.

Jordan attempts to recover taxes, boost economy in wake of coronavirus lockdown – Cleveland Jewish News

King Abdullah of Jordan said on Sunday that the country was handling outbreaks of COVID-19 and making moves to boost the economy.

We have successfully dealt with the coronavirus, which today is under control in Jordan, he said in a meeting with Jordanian figures, according to AFP.

The king said in a statement that the focus is now on addressing poverty and unemployment brought on by the global pandemic. He added that Jordan would become even stronger after overcoming the coronavirus.

Meanwhile, Jordans Prime Minister Omar al-Razzaz said on Sunday that the government was also going to crack down on tax evasion.

Protecting public money and fighting corruption is a national duty, Razzaz said in a national TV speech, reported Reuters.

As such, the government froze the assets of dozens of companies and businessmen for allegedly evading paying taxes.

It is now trying to recoup such sums after a virus-related lockdown that led to the biggest economic downturn in Jordan 20 years and drastically cut state revenues, the report said.

A one-of-a-kind piece: Backboard from Michael Jordan’s ‘Shot’ sold in auction – The Athletic

Craig Ehlo doesnt mind talking about The Shot now. But for 10 or so years following the 1989 game in which the Cavaliers lost to the Bulls in Game 5 of their first-round playoff series, he didnt like to discuss it, much less watch the replay.

The Shot resurfaced again recently as Episode 3 of ESPNs The Last Dance documentary highlighted one of the more iconic moments of Michael Jordans legacy.

Over the years, Ehlo, now 58, has come to realize he is an important part of NBA history. Even if hes on the wrong side.

I remember my dad told me right after the game that if anybody writes about it or teases you about it, just say, Were you there? Were you the one guarding him? Were you the one that got the opportunity? Ehlo recalled. I mean, thats what we all want is the opportunity. And to be there and, sure, you came up short on that...

Neolithic flint tools found in Jordan are ‘earliest human figures’ – The Times

Archaeologists studying a cache of more than 100 prehistoric flint objects found in Jordan have concluded they are figurines of humans rather than tools as originally thought.

The Spanish researchers said that the 10,000 year-old flints found at Kharaysin, near Amman, have no sign of the wear and tear that would be expected if they were used as scrapers or cutting tools.

Instead, they suggested that their notched violin shapes resemble the humanoid forms of later Neolithic sculptures and, as they were found near burial sites, they may have been used to represent ancestors or the dead.

The Zarqa valley in Jordan has been the site of many Neolithic discoveries

NAHAL EFE PROJECT AND KHARAYSIN PROJECT

The results lead us to suggest that these flint artefacts are figurines that depict the human body in a form not previously documented, the study, published in the

Jordan Staal: Theres a ton of sacrifices you have to make to win the cup – Canes Country

Hockey is returning around the league for those teams taking part in the Return-to-Play plan. With Phase 3 starting, training camp has kicked off and players are eager to prepare for postseason hockey.

Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal knows what it takes to be successful in the playoffs and he is ready to help push his team over the edge in his first full year as a solo captain.

He spoke with the media over Zoom following Mondays practice. Here is some of the highlights of what he had to say.

On if it feels exciting for hockey to return: Everyone here is excited to get going. Just a lot of energy out there. The boys are excited to see each other again and it was good to see them, but its back on. Were back on the ice and were going to be fighting for a chance for the Cup. Its exciting times and you dont get this opportunity a whole lot.

On if team still has a lot of work to do to get ready: Were going to want to get our level of play to the highest level we can at practice. It isnt easy to do just in practice, so were going to have to push each other and wrap up as best we can to get to a playoff level. Everyone out there is not quite there yet, including myself, and were going to push as best we can.

On if it feels like a new season: Its got kind of the same feel as a new season. Im sure well be going over a lot of system stuff and the video and working on all that stuff throughout the practices. Not a lot of games or exhibition games either, so its going to feel a little bit like a training camp, but still in the back of your mind you know youre going to be stepping into a playoff game very quickly. Its gonna be a little more intense and were going to have to keep the level up the best we can these next two weeks.

On how this training camp feels: The only difference from this and normal training camp is theres no extra players out there. Theres no guys fighting for spots. We already got a team thats all ready to push each other and thats ready to go. We got guys that are hopefully going to step into their roles and hopefully understand that we have to push each other to get some wins together and get a streak going.

I think its a little different in the regard that we have our guys. We have our group ready to go and we just got to step right into it too. Theres no tip-toeing into exhibition games and hoping to have a good start to the season. Were definitely going to have some urgency and were going to have to have that throughout this week. Thats going to be on the players, thats going to be on myself and a lot of the guys in this room that theyre ready to go.

On if the teams playoff experience last year helps: It wont hurt. Experience always helps. Just understanding the importance of every shift and every play. You could feel that throughout the playoffs. Every time you start to realize that little mistakes, if they add up, can end up in the back of your net and I think the guys started to understand that and realize when to take risks when we needed to and when to be smarter with the puck and just understanding how to win games. I think our team learned a lot last year and we got another group that is hungry for another run and hungry for a cup so hopefully its a good recipe for success.

On the sacrifices he has to make in regards to family: Its... unfortunate. Theres a lot of people hurting throughout this whole pandemic and its a sacrifice Ill have to make. A difficult one. Im going to miss my boys first steps and his first birthday and stuff like that and stuff I want to be there for. But opportunities like this dont come often and the guys in that room want it just as much as I do, so Im here to win. Its part of the sacrifices we have to make and theres a ton of other sacrifices that you have to make to win cups and thats just one of them this year.

‘Their fight is our fight’: Latinos in Las Vegas join Blacks in seeking end to own injustices – Las Vegas Sun

Christopher DeVargas

Lue Ortiz, canvas director of Las Vegas-based nonprofit Make the Road Nevada, poses for a portrait Thursday, July 9,2020.

By Ricardo Torres-Cortez (contact)

Monday, July 13, 2020 | 2 a.m.

Lue Ortiz learned at a young age that people looked differently at him because of the dark color of his skin. Just a boy, he was confused as to why some would move out the way when he would approach.

Then came the day his grandmother was detained by police in Orlando, Fla.

Ortiz and his grandmother were walking to a grocery store when a sheriffs deputy stopped them, he said. His grandmother ended up in handcuffs because she wasnt carrying her identification and, because of her complexion.

At school, Ortiz the son of a Puerto Rican mother and a Black father said Black and Hispanic students would have to make appointments to talk to a school adviser, while white students freely walked in for advice.

Ortiz, now a Las Vegas resident, is the canvas director for Make the Road Nevada, a community organizing group that advocates for elevating working-class immigrant communities. The group has been active over the past months in support of Black Lives Matter after the death of George Floyd by white Minnesota police.

When African Americans win when Black people win we all win, Ortiz, 28, said. When we talk about racism, colorism, we shouldnt have to wait (to jump into action). We shouldnt need to understand why.

Throughout the evolution of modern civil rights, Black Americans and Latinos have marched side-by-side. Whether they know it or not, their demands intersect with each other and those of other marginalized communities in Las Vegas and nationally.

Courtesy of OJa Vincent

Oja Vincent is co-founder of the Forced Trajectory Project.

For now, Black Lives Matter has taken the mantle after the recent deaths of Floyd and Breonna Taylor, who was killed by Louisville police, and Ahmaud Arbery, who was chased and killed by a white father and son in Georgia.

Born out of an internet hashtag in 2013 following the killing of Trayvon Martin in Florida, Black Lives Matter is defined as a political and social movement originating among African Americans, emphasizing basic human rights and racial equality for Black people. And although the groups dont exist in a monolith, the Black-and-Latino kinship has also been present in Las Vegas.

Right now, it might not be directly affecting us, Ortiz said of the police-brutality demonstrations. But if we let it affect someone, at some point, it will come to affect us. So this is why we have to pick a stance.

Latino groups advocating against detention and deportation practices by Immigration and Customs Enforcement are similar to Black American groups fighting against police brutality, Ortiz said. All are essentially protesting the systemic discrimination of marginalized communities.

Recently, when he still lived in Florida, Ortiz said police detained the husband of one of his colleagues for jaywalking and he was immediately handed over to immigration officials.

Attorneys jumped on the case, and deportation was ultimately averted. But if youre any form of immigrant, have darker skin color, you are going to face some sort of harassment. Its not a question of if, its a question of when, Ortiz said.

Courtesy of Make the Road Nevada

Ashley Garcia is the deputy political director of Make the Road Nevada.

That's one of the reasons why its common to see Blacks and Hispanics marching side-by-side in Las Vegas.

Were the same species, with the same race and with different ethnicities, said Oja Vincent, a Black Latino with Haitian parents who is a member of Forced Trajectory Project, an independent media outlet that reports on police violence and the impact it has on affected families and communities.

Theres always been a connection. Theres always been a realization of similarities in our communities in terms of Black and Latinx, and theres always been link-ups on different levels that have been super powerful, he continued.

A New York Times poll found that Latino and Black voters participated in recent protests at almost identical numbers, about one out of every five voters questioned.

Everybody from the people with the most privilege, who show up as white folks, to folks with the least privilege, who show up as native folks, or immigrant folks without citizenship status need to stand together, Vincent said. Because these are issues that are very intersectional, theres overlapping pieces in all these issues.

Ashley Garcia, the deputy director of Make the Road Nevada, felt more welcome by Black students at Las Vegas-area magnet schools because they didnt judge her on her subpar Spanish or question her authenticity. Shes the daughter of a Salvadoran man and a Mexican-American mother from Texas. I dont like tortillas, but Im Latina, she joked.

The fight against police brutality in the Black community correlates with ICE in the Latino community, she said.

The criminal justice system is one of the most concrete examples of why their fight is our fight, Garcia said. We will be brought to our full liberation when Black people are seen as full human beings.

Vincent dates the origins of what he describes as a system of oppression to the late 1400s. First, indigenous people were nearly decimated when the American continents and the Caribbean were colonized; then Africans were kept in captivity with slavery when white indentured servants also were exploited and now, in the current capitalist society, the scales have been tipped against people of color, he said.

And the abuses, such as the controversial deadly police shootings, have always occurred, but now people are finally seeing them because of technological advances, he said.

Marginalized groups have similar struggles, with the biggest barrier to collaborating being language and culture, Vincent said. Thats why Forced Trajectory Project doesnt single out the victims they advocate for by race, ethnicity or culture, he said.

The reality is that everybody who loses a family member (to police violence) is feeling the same universal human pain, and they wake up with it every day, and they go to sleep every night and have to deal with all the circumstances in between, including all the court cases (and) bureaucracy, Vincent said.

Nevada records more than 1K new COVID-19 cases for just the 2nd time – Las Vegas Review-Journal

Nevada recorded 1,004 new cases of COVID-19 the second-biggest daily increase announced by the public health officials and eight additional deaths, according to data posted Friday.

The reporting by the state Department of Health and Human Services, posted the new figures on the agencys nvhealthresponse.nv.gov website, pushed total cases for Nevada to 25,908 and raised the death toll from the disease caused by the new coronavirus to 579. (Reports from local health districts and counties place the case total higher, at 25,973 as of late Friday.)

New cases, second only to the 1,159 announced on June 26, were well above the daily average of nearly 739 over the preceding week, while deaths were above the daily average of about 6 for the period.

The state infection rate, considered a better bellwether of the trend of the outbreak in the state than the daily new cases or deaths, climbed for the second straight day and the 22nd day out of the last 23, reaching 7.75 percent.

The rate, the number of confirmed cases divided by the number of people tested, fell over several months before bottoming out at 5.20 percent on June 17. Except for Wednesday, it has risen every day since.

Meanwhile, Clark County recorded 827 new cases of COVID-19 and five additional deaths over the preceding day, according to data from the Southern Nevada Health District.

The new data posted to the districts coronavirus website raised the case total for the county to 21,449, while the additional fatalities pushed the death toll to 473. The county estimates that 14,106 of those sickened by the illness have recovered.

New cases were well above the daily average of nearly 612 over the preceding week, while deaths were slightly below the daily average of just over five for the period.

The health district also reported 37 new hospitalizations for the disease, well above the daily average of just over 21 for the preceding week.

In an update Thursday, the Nevada Hospital Association reported that 81 percent of available hospital beds and 87 percent of intensive care unit beds in Southern Nevada were occupied.

The report said that COVID-19 patients accounted made up about 19 percent of those hospitalized in Nevada, while in the south they account for nearly one-third of ICU bed use.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Satoshi Nakamoto Inspiration Gives Advice On Bitcoins Next Move – Forbes

Listening to educator, inventor and scientist Scott Stornetta on May 30th during the presentation curated by the Government Blockchain Association Of UAE provided insight into one of the least understood problems in blockchains. Stornetta was part of the team that created what can be called a proto blockchain. With three out of nine references in the bitcoin paper by Satoshi Nakomoto, Stornetta and co-inventor Stuart Habers ideas have had an outsize influence on the design of bitcoin and of subsequent blockchains.

Stornetta answered a question about what message he will have if he were to ever meet Satoshi. Stornetta said that he would ask him to fully read the second paper. Here Stornetta is referring to a way to upgrade bitcoin or any time-stamping mechanism, if the signature algorithm is in danger of being compromised.

That paper deals with two topics, one of which is familiar to us from bitcoin and other blockchains. The use of Merkle trees as a way of aggregating the commitments and referring to just the root of the tree, which if timestamped and witnessed properly, ensures immutability of all the leaf documents or transactions. This is a way to refer to lots of transactions with just a single number. This is the basis of the concept of block in blockchain.

The papers second topic is how to renew the timestamps of documents if the cryptography behind timestamping using signatures is in danger of being broken. The simple prescription is to renew the timestamp, referring to the document (the hash) and the old signature in the new one.

Stornetta and Habers concerns were to preserving immutable and unrepudiatable references to digital documents with the time they are entered into a registry. That is not about value exchange and control of assets, like most other blockchains. They also make the observation that the timestamp, if fixed in a chain at a time known to be before the break, can be assumed to be correct.

Two baby elephants, symbols of renewal, walk among a herd at the Minneriya National Park in ... [+] Minneriya on July 8, 2020.

Many of the cryptographic structures behind any blockchain network are relatively safe from quantum computing as they are based on hash functions which are quantum resistant. For bitcoin and for other blockchains, this means that, Merkle trees and the structure of the chain itself are quite safe as most of this is based on hashes.

The vulnerability of digital signatures to Shors algorithm using quantum cryptanalysis is a Damocles sword that hangs over any blockchain that is meant to last for ever. Although, it is improbable that quantum computing will be able to break the signature algorithm in the short term there is a possibility that it will in the long run. For decentralized value exchanges whose longevity should be measured in hundreds of years, this consideration is crucial.

The more quantum vulnerable parts are signatures, as value transfer is based on signatures, the unspent transactions are vulnerable. If quantum computing progresses to a point where the signature algorithm is in imminent jeopardy, the signature algorithm needs to be updated to a quantum resistant one. Moreover, all owners of unspent transactions need to transfer values to the new scheme. This action also needs to be done before the signature scheme is broken. Further, it will need actions from all owners of value to safeguard their assets. This also applies to other forms of asset ownership assertion using asymmetric or public key cryptography. Some of these considerations can be seen in the plans for Ethereum Serenity upgrades.

Once quantum computing for factorization becomes a reality, all stranded assets; for which private keys are lost due to negligence or their owners death will start moving again, into the control of people with enough quantum resources.

Facilities for upgrading systems should be part of the initial architecture of any long-lived system. There are many throw-away systems that long outlive the initial horizon, so any system has to be created as if it is going to live a long time.

There Are Over 13K Bitcoin Addresses Worth $1M – Cointelegraph

There are over 13,000 Bitcoin (BTC) addresses that are worth at least $1 million, according to data from Glassnode.

At the current prices, it takes about 107 BTC for an address to become a dollar millionaire. Since this metric is tied to the dollar price of Bitcoin, it tends to fluctuate a lot. For comparison, the number of addresses that contain at least 100 BTC has a much lower volatility.

Bitcoin addresses that hold 100 BTC v. addresses that hold $1M worth of BTC. Source: Glassnode.

We can observe that the number of addresses with balances of over $1 million hit a record high during the 2017 bull run, while the other metric remained largely unaffected by it. This remains one of the few indicators in the Bitcoin world with a very low variance through the years.

Another possible reason is that some of these addresses are controlled by large entities like exchanges and custodians, who do not like to stray from a predetermined distribution of their Bitcoin. It should also be noted that there are over 1 million of Bitcoin which were likely mined by Bitcoin creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. These coins have not moved in over 10 years.

So how many Bitcoin millionaires are there? The reality is that we do not know. In order for us to answer this question, we would have to know how many individuals or entities control those 13,290 addresses. This number could theoretically lie anywhere between 1 and 13,290.

Although it is possible to apply data analysis heuristics to Bitcoin addresses and transactions to narrow down this number somewhat, no such complete data set is currently available.

FT819 CAR T-cell Product Candidate Derived from Clonal Master iPSC Line with Novel CD19-specific 1XX CAR Integrated into TRAC Locus

Phase 1 Clinical Study will Evaluate FT819 for Patients with Advanced B-cell Leukemias and Lymphomas

SAN DIEGO, CA, USA I July 09, 2020 I Fate Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ: FATE), a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the development of programmed cellular immunotherapies for cancer and immune disorders, announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared the Companys Investigational New Drug (IND) application for FT819, an off-the-shelf allogeneic chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy targeting CD19+ malignancies. FT819 is the first-ever CAR T-cell therapy derived from a clonal master induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) line, and is engineered with several first-of-kind features designed to improve the safety and efficacy of CAR T-cell therapy. The Company plans to initiateclinical investigation of FT819for the treatment of patients with relapsed / refractory B-cell malignancies, including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL).

The clearance of our IND application for FT819 is a ground-breaking milestone in the field of cell-based cancer immunotherapy. Our unique ability to produce CAR T cells from a clonal master engineered iPSC line creates a pathway for more patients to gain timely access to therapies with curative potential, said Scott Wolchko, President and Chief Executive Officer of Fate Therapeutics. Four years ago, we first set out under our partnership with Memorial Sloan Kettering led by Dr. Michel Sadelain to improve on the revolutionary success of patient-derived CAR T-cell therapy and bring an off-the-shelf paradigm to patients, and we are very excited to advance FT819 into clinical development.

FT819 was designed to specifically address several limitations associated with the current generation of patient- and donor-derived CAR T-cell therapies. Under a collaboration with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) led by Michel Sadelain, M.D., Ph.D., Director, Center for Cell Engineering, and Head, Gene Expression and Gene Transfer Laboratory at MSK, the Company incorporated several first-of-kind features into FT819 including:

The multi-center Phase 1 clinical trial of FT819 is designed to determine the maximum tolerated dose of FT819 and assess its safety and clinical activity in up to 297 adult patients across three types of B-cell malignancies (CLL, ALL, and NHL). Each indication will enroll independently and evaluate three dose-escalating treatment regimens: Regimen A as a single dose of FT819; Regimen B as a single dose of FT819 with IL-2 cytokine support; and Regimen C as three fractionated doses of FT819. For each indication and regimen, dose-expansion cohorts of up to 15 patients may be enrolled to further evaluate the clinical activity of FT819.

At the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Virtual 2020 Meeting, the Company presented preclinical data demonstrating FT819 is comprised of CD8 T cells with uniform 1XX CAR expression and complete elimination of endogenous TCR expression. Additionally, data from functional assessments showed FT819 has antigen-specific cytolytic activity in vitro against CD19-expressing leukemia and lymphoma cell lines that is comparable to that of healthy donor-derived CAR T cells, and persists and maintains tumor clearance in the bone marrow in an in vivo disseminated xenograft model of lymphoblastic leukemia.

Fate Therapeutics has an exclusive license for all human therapeutic use to U.S. Patent No. 10,370,452 pursuant to its license agreement with MSK1, which patent covers compositions and uses of effector T cells expressing a CAR, where such T cells are derived from a pluripotent stem cell including an iPSC. In addition to the patent rights licensed from MSK, the Company owns an extensive intellectual property portfolio that broadly covers compositions and methods for the genome editing of iPSCs using CRISPR and other nucleases, including the use of CRISPR to insert a CAR in the TRAC locus for endogenous transcriptional control.

1 Fate Therapeutics haslicensedintellectual propertyfrom MSK on which Dr. Sadelain is aninventor. As a result of the licensing arrangement, MSK has financial interests related to Fate Therapeutics.

About Fate Therapeutics iPSC Product PlatformThe Companys proprietary induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) product platform enables mass production of off-the-shelf, engineered, homogeneous cell products that can be administered with multiple doses to deliver more effective pharmacologic activity, including in combination with cycles of other cancer treatments. Human iPSCs possess the unique dual properties of unlimited self-renewal and differentiation potential into all cell types of the body. The Companys first-of-kind approach involves engineering human iPSCs in a one-time genetic modification event and selecting a single engineered iPSC for maintenance as a clonal master iPSC line. Analogous to master cell lines used to manufacture biopharmaceutical drug products such as monoclonal antibodies, clonal master iPSC lines are a renewable source for manufacturing cell therapy products which are well-defined and uniform in composition, can be mass produced at significant scale in a cost-effective manner, and can be delivered off-the-shelf for patient treatment. As a result, the Companys platform is uniquely capable of overcoming numerous limitations associated with the production of cell therapies using patient- or donor-sourced cells, which is logistically complex and expensive and is subject to batch-to-batch and cell-to-cell variability that can affect clinical safety and efficacy. Fate Therapeutics iPSC product platform is supported by an intellectual property portfolio of over 300 issued patents and 150 pending patent applications.

About Fate Therapeutics, Inc.Fate Therapeutics is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the development of first-in-class cellular immunotherapies for cancer and immune disorders.
