Stunning video from the International Space Station shows comet Neowise soaring past Earth – CBS News

The once-in-a-lifetime comet Neowise has already been captured by astrophotographers around the world. But Earth isn't the only place the comet is visible astronauts aboard the International Space Station are being treated to their own cosmic fireworks displays as the comet streaks across the sky throughout July.

Since Neowise survived its trip around the sun on July 3, it's been making its way towards Earth, visible with the naked eye during clear skies to people across the globe. Last week, astronauts on the ISS captured time-lapse photos of the comet, called one of the brightest in decades, which have been compiled into a spectacular real-time video.

Artist Sen Doran, whose work was on display at the Natural History Museum in London before the coronavirus lockdowns, created the videoby sourcing hundreds of images from NASA's database. Doran told CBS News on Tuesday that he has spent years creating these types of videos because time-lapses are too fast to appreciate "how beautiful the Earth appears when viewed from space."

Doran sourced 550 images from the ISS archive to create the video, processing and interpolating the sequence to its real-time equivalent of seven minutes long. He also tweeted a time-lapse of the moment, highlighting the stunning event in just 15 seconds.

The video shows the icy object Neowise, named for the NASA mission that recently discovered it, trailed by its massive dust tail as it soars past our planet. The comet almost appears to be heading toward Earth, but don't worry it isn't a threat.

The video also captured a simultaneous cosmic phenomenon bright blue noctilucent clouds. These rare "space clouds" form when sunlight bounces off of ice particles in the upper atmosphere.

Astronaut Bob Behnken, who recently launched to the ISS on SpaceX's Crew Dragon spaceship, said that he hopes his images of the comet serve as a reminder to people back on Earth to take care of the planet.

"If we got to a disputation at dawn, right before the sun came up, that comet became visible during that short period of time when it was still close to the sun, but the sun was still hidden by the Earth," Behnken told The New York Times' podcastThe Daily last week. "It was just an awesome sight to be able to see and something that we try to capture in the few moments that we do have to look out the window."

Astronomers discovered Neowise back in March, and it came dangerously close to breaking apart when it neared the sun earlier this month. The comet has been putting on a stunning show in the early hours before sunrise in the Northern Hemisphere.

But late sleepers need not worry the comet started appearing in the evening this week. To view it, people in the Northern Hemisphere can look to the northwestern sky, just below Ursa Major, commonly known as the Big Dipper constellation.

Scientists say the comet will be visible for about another month. In conditions with little light pollution, it may be visible with the naked eye, but NASA recommends using binoculars or a telescope to spot its long tail.

Newowise's closest approach to Earth comes on July 22, at a distance of about 64 million miles. The event is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience the comet takes about 6,800 years to complete its path around the sun.

Native Midwest ferns grow well in shady spots – Chicago Daily Herald

There are many ferns native to our Illinois gardens, all ready to add textural contrast for bold-foliaged perennials or linear sedges.

Adiantum pedatum, commonly called Northern maidenhair fern, is ideal for the heavily shaded garden where other perennials suffer from lack of light. It grows up to 2 feet tall, but often stays as short as a foot while spreading very slowly by rhizomes to form magnificent colonies with time.

Its lacy fronds of light green leaves are held on arching, thin, black stems. Plants would choose a spot in damp woods (and do in their native habitats) but grow happily in average to moist, rich garden soil. Fronds may brown in hot, dry summers without supplemental water.

Northern maidenhair ferns are not favored by deer or rabbits and rarely suffer from insect or disease problems.

Dryopteris marginalis does not spread and instead forms a tidy, vase-shaped clump of leathery, dark green fronds. Commonly called wood fern or marginal shield fern because of the way it produces its spores along the outer margins of its fronds, it thrives in moist, rich, well-drained soil. Once established, however, marginal shield fern can tolerate short periods of drought.

Its 18- to 30-inch fronds look their best all season if planted in a site protected from strong winds. Semi-evergreen, they remain green in the winter garden until snow covers them.

Marginal shield ferns are not bothered by insects, diseases or munching garden marauders.

Matteuccia struthiopteris, also known as ostrich fern, is taller than most other native ferns. Growing 4 feet tall or more, it is best for gardens with room for it to spread out. It expands quickly when planted in consistently moist soil in part to full shade.

Its attractive, bright green fiddleheads emerge from the soil in spring. Feathery, medium green fronds remain attractive until summer takes its toll. Large, dark brown fertile fronds rise from the center of plants in summer.

Plant ostrich ferns in wet areas where other perennials are difficult to grow. Deer and rabbits won't eat them first (or even second).

If a more mannerly fern is needed for a consistently moist area, Onoclea sensibilis is a lovely choice. Commonly called sensitive fern because its bright green fronds succumb to the first fall frost, it grows 3 to 4 feet tall. It also spreads by rhizomes but at a much less rambunctious rate than ostrich ferns.

Grow sensitive ferns in rich, consistently moist, well-drained soil in part to full shade. Unable to tolerate dry soil, watering is necessary during periods without sufficient rainfall.

In late summer, their shorter, woody fertile fronds turn brown and remain attractive well into winter. Insects and diseases rarely, if ever, bother sensitive ferns, and rabbits don't find their fronds delicious.

Choose native ferns when considering adding ferns to a shade garden. Plant them alongside other natives like foamflowers and Solomon's seal and non-natives like purple-foliaged coral bells and hostas.

More than 60,000 new virus cases every day in US – Dunya News

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States on Monday recorded more than 60,000 new cases of coronavirus infection for the seventh consecutive day, Johns Hopkins University reported in its real-time tally.

With another 488 deaths and 61,288 cases registered in 24 hours, the country has a total of 140,922 deaths and 3.82 million cases, the Baltimore-based university said at 8:30 pm (0030 GMT Tuesday).

President Donald Trump on Monday finally spoke out in favor of mask-wearing -- a marked change of tune as polls show him headed for election disaster in November as the US has emerged as the worlds worst-hit country in the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Many people say that it is Patriotic to wear a face mask when you cant socially distance," Trump wrote. "There is nobody more Patriotic than me, your favorite President!"

- Troubled Trump to relaunch coronavirus briefings -

US President Donald Trump promised Monday to resume televised coronavirus briefings and finally spoke out in favor of mask-wearing -- a marked change of tune as polls show him headed for election disaster.

With only just over 100 days until the election against Democrat Joe Biden, Trump is scrambling to respond to public anger over his troubled months-long handling of the pandemic.

Since the virus first hit the United States, Trump has insisted that it will just "disappear."

But that sunny claim is now badly strained even among loyal supporters, as they watch COVID-19 cases surge through populous Republican-led states like Florida and Texas.

More widely, polls show public trust in Trumps management of the crisis tanking.

Throughout, he has sought to deny the seriousness of the problem, an attitude symbolized by his mockery of masks and refusal to back up doctors recommendations for mass use.

Trump went some way to addressing that Monday with a tweeted picture of himself in a black mask with the presidential seal and a call for patriotism.

"Many people say that it is Patriotic to wear a face mask when you cant socially distance," Trump wrote. "There is nobody more Patriotic than me, your favorite President!"

However, his tweet stopped well short of endorsing calls from some for a nationwide mandate to wear masks in public.

- Doing very well -

Trump, a lifelong real estate salesman and more recently reality TV performer, says the real problem is that Americans just arent hearing the right news.

So, likely from Tuesday he will resume the regular evening televised briefings from the White House that he gave until late April, often finding himself accused of giving confusing or misleading information.

"I think its a great way to get information out to the public," he told reporters. "Were doing very well in so many different ways."

Trump acknowledged a current "big flare-up" of cases in the country but once again distanced himself from responsibility for the problem, underlining that the disease is also ravaging "Mexico, Brazil, many countries in Europe, all over, Russia."

"When you watch the news, the local news, and you see it, and its, its like all about the United States. They never like to talk about whats going on in the world," he said.

Trump said the briefings would focus on good news regarding vaccine development and therapeutics.

"We think were doing very well in that regard," he said. "I think Im going to be bringing in some of the great companies that are working very successfully."

"Were really coming up with some very good answers," he said.

- PR fiasco -

Trump has great faith in his ability before the cameras. He has transformed the image of the US presidency during his first term with unprecedented streams of press conferences, tweets and rallies.

But his previous spell as the nations pandemic-spokesman in chief ended badly in late April.

Trump often turned what were billed as opportunities to provide the anxious public with information into testy exchanges with reporters in the White House briefing room.

He finally ditched the events after a PR fiasco where he mused on air about the possibility of injecting household disinfectant to combat COVID-19.

He later said he had been speaking "sarcastically," although there was no evidence of that at the time.

- Polls slide -

The president has consistently sought to play down the severity of the health crisis, hoping that voters will instead focus on what he touts as his good management of the economy.

In an interview with "Fox News Sunday," he once again claimed that the virus, which has killed more than 140,000 Americans and caused massive economic disruption, would somehow go away by itself.

"Ill be right eventually," he said.

But with the virus on the rebound, he finds himself accused of failing to lead.

Biden has opened a double-digit lead in election polls, and an ABC/ Washington Post poll released Friday showed nearly two-thirds of Americans mistrust Trump on the coronavirus.

Trump, nevertheless, appears to be looking forward to his chance to get back to the briefing room podium.

"We had very successful briefings. I was doing them and we had a lot of people watching, record numbers watching. In the history of cable television, theres never been anything like it," he said.

Studies show microplastics are causing a negative impact to the health of the River Thames and its inhabitants – The Natural History Museum

Separate new studies by Postgraduate students Alex McGoran, Katharine Rowley and Katherine McCoy, all from the Department of Biological Sciences at Royal Holloway, reveal that microplastics, are present in high quantities throughout the tidal Thames and are being ingested by wildlife.

Fibres from washing machine outflows and potentially from sewage outfalls, are most commonly ingested by wildlife; but fragments from the breakup of larger plastics, such as packaging items are most abundant in the water. Flushable wet wipes were found in high abundance on the shoreline forming huge unsightly reefs. Although pollution from trace metals is now on the decline, the contamination of the Thames by plastic is a major issue.

The research of Alex McGoran1, NERC DTP PhD student (Royal Holloway and NHM) and supported by the Fishmongers Company Charitable Trust, reports how two resident estuarine species of crab, namely the native shore crab and the invasive Chinese mitten crab, are ingesting microplastics.

In total, 135 crabs were examined and 874 pieces and tangles of plastic, mainly in the form of fibres, were removed for their bodies. Frequently these fibres form tangles comprising up to 100 pieces of plastic and fill the stomach of many crabs which could reduce the urge to feed and leave the animals, with less energy for growth and reproduction.

About 95% of mitten crabs were found to have tangled plastic in the stomach. Although tangles were dominated by fibres, they were found to contain other fragments of microplastics from sanitary pads, balloons, elastic bands and carrier bags.

Typically, microplastic ingestion is low in many species, with the exception of some groups, such as seabirds. Upon bringing these crabs back to the labs at Natural History Museum, it was shocking to find that they were full of plastic. Tangles of plastic were particularly prevalent in the invasive Chinese mitten crab and we still dont fully understand the reason for this. We propose that when crabs moult (shedding their exoskeleton to grow) that plastic is trapped in the discarded gut lining, said Alex McGoran.

Two additional studies into the pollution of the Thames by plastic were undertaken by Masters Students.

Katharine Rowley2 (Royal Holloway, NHM and ZSL) focussed on the quantification of microplastics in the River Thames water column.

Katharine recorded many forms of microplastic in the Thames, ranging from glitter, microbeads to plastic fragments. Her study found that 93.5% of microplastics in the water column were most likely formed from the fragmentation of larger plastic items, with food packaging thought to be a significant source for these plastics.

Her study found high levels of microplastics in the Thames, estimating that on peak ebb tides, 94 thousand microplastics flow down the River Thames per second in some areas. This study highlights the severity of microplastic contamination in the River Thames and the grave need for the reduction of plastic input into the freshwater environment.

Katharine Rowley, said: Our study provides baseline data for microplastic contamination in the River Thames water column. Globally, in comparison to published estimates of microplastic contamination in marine and freshwater environments, the River Thames contains very high levels of this pollutant, potentially a major input to the North Sea. With the potential threats of plastic pollution to both human and ecosystem health, it is of great importance that the input of plastic into marine and freshwater environments is reduced.

The research of Katherine McCoy (Royal Holloway and NHM), in collaboration with river clean-up charity, Thames21, looked at flushable and non-flushable wet wipes as a source of plastic pollution in the River Thames and the environmental impacts they have on the invasive Asian clam. Wet wipes found in sewage effluent are deposited in large numbers on the foreshore on the south bank, just upstream from Hammersmith Bridge, creating massive wet wipe reefs. This study demonstrated that high densities of wet wipes are associated with low population numbers of clams, and vice versa. It was found that clams adjacent to the wet wipe reefs contained synthetic polymers, some of which may have originated from the wet wipe reefs and other pollutants found on the site such as sanitary items.

Katherine McCoy, said: This research highlights the impacts of improper waste disposal on our environment, especially the flushing of wet wipes. These products are often described as flushable, but they have been known to block sewage pipes by contributing to fatbergs and have now been seen to cause environmental disruption on the foreshores of the river Thames. Our study shows that stricter regulations are needed for the labelling and disposal of these products. There is great scope to further research the impacts of microplastics and indeed microfibres on Thames organisms.

Dr Paul Clark, Life Sciences Department, NHM said I was born in London and as a child I remember the Thames as a heavily polluted river which led to the decline of its fish populations. When the Government ordered a clean-up of the catchment the River returned back to life. What our students have shown in this collaboration is that although the Thames is certainly cleaner with regards some chemical pollutants, e.g. heavy metals, the River is severely polluted with plastic. And once again our wildlife is threatened.

Professor Dave Morritt from the Department of Biological Sciences at Royal Holloway, said: Taken together these studies show how many different types of plastic, from microplastics in the water through to larger items of debris physically altering the foreshore, can potentially affect a wide range of organisms in the River Thames.

The increased use of single-use plastic items, and the inappropriate disposal of such items, including masks and gloves, along with plastic-containing cleaning products, during the current Covid-19 pandemic, may well exacerbate this problem.

Thames Water has recently reported an increase in wet wipe-related blockages of sewer systems and when the Covid-19 restrictions on fieldwork are lifted, it would be interesting to find out the prevalence of these products in the River Thames.

We must not forget that, although these studies illustrate the problem on a local scale, plastic pollution is very much a global issue.

Anna Cucknell, ZSLs Thames Project Manager, said: Plastic pollution is devastating for aquatic ecosystems and I was shocked by the densities we found. Our study showed the majority of microplastics in the Thames are created by larger plastic items breaking down which is why the #OneLess campaign, led by ZSL and partners, is working to reduce single use plastic water bottles in London. To date it has eliminated 4.4 million single-use plastic water bottles from London's supply chains and removed 114,000 from the Thames. Thanks to decades of conservation two species of seal and more than 100 species of fish including sharks, seahorses and the Critically Endangered European eel, call the Thames Estuary home. We must not let plastic pollution threaten their survival.

The beauty of bedroom pop – Cherwell Online

The bedroom can feel like an inner sanctum, a personalhideout away from the public. Therefore, there seems to be a contradiction inbedroom pop becoming a new genre dominating worldwide media, rather thanremaining isolated in the private intimacy of the bedroom. As a result oftechnological convulsions and the surge of online platforms, bedroom pop hasultimately manifested the ideology that creating and producing music is easilyaccessible to all.

Clairo, Rex Orange County, Steve Lacy and Billie Eilish aresome of the most prominent avatars of bedroom pop, boasting millions of streamson platforms such as Spotify, YouTube and Soundcloud. Ironically, their successhas moved their music production out of the modesty of the bedroom, and into professionalstudios, arguably losing the intimacy and DIY appeal of a track madeindependently. Their success raises some fundamental questions: what definesbedroom pop? And is this terminology merely a launching point for future risingartists?

Bedroom pop is typically characterised by lo-fi, relaxedaesthetics and the imperfections of home produced, self-recorded tracks.Commonly associated with the soundscape of scratchy recordings are slightly outof tune guitars, muffled audio from laptop microphones and cheesy pre-set drummachine loops.

Claire Cottrill, also known as Clairo, exemplifies thebeauty of simplicity and the appeal of DIY ethos. Her music video accompanying PrettyGirl was created on a laptop webcam, taking under thirty minutes to create. The singer has a youthful, naive persona as she nonchalantly lip-syncs to thelyrics. While the video is reminiscent of homemade videos created on Video Starin Year 8, Pretty Girl has accumulated 51 million views on YouTube. Clairosearly music, such as her EP Diary 001 (2018),is the epitome ofbedroom pop; the rudimentary synths and sweet-like-candy vocals encapsulate theraw honesty and naivety this new wave is about.

However, the simplicity of bedroom pop should not beunderestimated. Some of the genres viral gems have been down to itssimplicity, suggesting anyone with a laptop can become an internet success. Twenty-year-oldBeabadoobees first hit was from the off chance of uploading her first songever written to Bandcamp on a whim in 2017. Yet it has now crystallised intopopularity on TikTok, racking up over 39 million streams on Spotify, and 500million streams of the remix. Coffee finds appeal in its delicate aesthetic, alluding to the listener that theyre in a nostalgic and romantic love story. The track consists of four soft guitar chords, lightly strummed alongside Beasethereal voice, who sings so softly that its almost a whisper. The varyingtempo throughout the song opposes the judging ticking of a studio metronome, themuffled dialogue at the end perpetuating the colloquiality of a home recording.

Though as with Clairo, Beabadoobee and many other bedroom pop creators, finding success on the internet provides the opportunities of record label signings, debut album contracts and ultimately, a chance in a professional studio. Clairos debut album, Immunity (2019), is sonically cohesive in maintaining the intimacy of soft vocals and confessional, personal lyrics throughout. However, it is clear her sound is broadening, as her use of professional equipment becomes increasingly apparent; low quality sounding audio has been replaced with high tech microphones, and cheesy pre-set drum loops have been replaced with professional drummers. Equally, Beabadoobees signing to Dirty Hit has allowed her to stray away from the early days of acoustic guitars. Her most recent EP, Space Cadet (2019), finds a new sonic solar system similar to indie rock, with roaring electric guitars, punchier vocals and drums powerful enough to mosh to. With more ambitious production, should we still classify these artists under the category of bedroom pop?

Unlike most genres, bedroom pop cannot truly be identified by its sound. In fact, artists that fall under this category do not have to share a similar sound at all. Bedroom pop may vary from sounding similar to indie folk, teenage heartthrob tracks to 808 hi-hats of R&B, or even a fusion of both. The main appeal of using software such as Logic Pro X, GarageBand or Ableton Live is that the possible outcomes are endless.Bedroom pop, therefore, has recently been identifiable more as a community rather than a particular soundscape. One of the strongest appeals that remains for bedroom pop is individualism. Artists of this community prioritise the ideology of independence and authenticity, ensuring it permeates throughout their records. Whats important is that the initial writing process of lyrics and chords remains where it started: in the bedroom. Taking these ideas into the studio merely enhances their capabilities as musicians.

Bedroom pop is a refreshing antidote to the mass corporate mainstream pop churned out on the radio. Rather than music created with corporate success, streaming algorithms, or a mainstream audience in mind, bedroom pop finds comfort in its raw honesty, and its expressive freedom.

Trolls And Patriarchy Are More Linked Than You Think – Femina

Image: Instagram/Rhea Chakraborty

"U b*tch commit suicide otherwise I will send someone to kill you."

"We will make you regret opening your comment section."

"You are a 2 rupee woman."

This is what some faceless people hurled at some women on social media in the past week. Ghastly, pathetic, frustrating, and so much more than the vocabulary can conjure up, but what about it! This is "normal", "People say things", "Ignore them", and "Don't give any importance to them".Right?!

Actor Rhea Chakraborty is recently in the eye of the social storm. The reason: many if you ask the netizens. The death of her boyfriend Sushant Singh Rajput is, in some crooked way, linked to her and their past relationship.

People attacking Rhea after her boyfriend committed suicide, with possible reasons of mental health issues and depression, need to understand that they are not supporting his cause or helping drive the conversation around the issue at all. Instead, they are just pushing another person into a dark room, as they believed Sushant to be in. In which world is that justified? If you're a troll, don't even try.

Why? Because "trolls don't care about the person," says Dr Shefali Batra, Senior Consultant Psychiatrist and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapist. "What they are concerned about is the pain and the emotional response that they arouse in somebody. That's their reward. If one doesn't care about their comments, they find someone else to disturb," she explains.

Image:123RF

And it's not just Rhea. Swara Bhasker's posts on social media define what trolling truly is. Anything that woman says is met with scorn, criticism and a reminder about her masturbation scene from a movie. (What's wrong with a masturbation scene anyway, but that debate is for later!)

As we talk about trolling, our minds can't help but wonder why the nature of every troll is so patriarchal irrespective of the gender. If a man is being attacked online, trolls go after abusing his mother/sister/wife/daughter of rape. In a women's case, online or real-world, abuse has always been easier. Just demean her, add a few body-negative comments; if she's still talking, throw in a rape threat or two. The trolling here is done.

Image:123RF

Abusive remarks about rape threat or acid attack are not casual, but the way they are casually thrown around in the digital space is shocking. And this is a punishable offence under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 294, 504, 506, 509 and Sec 67 of the IT Act. Under which YouTuber Shubham Mishra was booked by Vadodara City Police last week for uploading an abusive, threatening video against comedian Agrima Joshua.

According to the "Troll Patrol India," a report by Amnesty International in 2020 found that women politicians in India face a shocking scale of abuse on Twitter. It also discovered that women are targeted with abuse online not just for their opinions - but also for various identities, such as gender, religion, caste, and marital status. Disturbing, but not surprising.

"Social media only amplifies existing social structures and biases. Thanks to the anonymity the politically incorrect instincts get freehand on expression. We are a largely male society and wired for patriarchy in chauvinism. Trolling patterns and trolling victims online (and offline) closely replicate the demographic," says Sahil Siddiqui, who spearheaded the campaign Give Subtitles To Suicide for Suicide Prevention India Foundation for WHO's Gatekeeper Program.

But, on a human level, one asks what makes other people so cruel in disguise. "What powers the troll is the reaction that they arouse in people. The reward is the mayhem they create. While some of them could be narcissists, psychopaths, and sociopaths; their motivation is going back for more and more reaction that they arouse in people," explains Dr Batra.

In a male-dominated world, women are perceived as someone who can be easily oppressed, and women are the natural targets, Vijal Sejpal, founder of iThrive counselling and holistic development centre further explains. Trolling is a fight for power and control. It's deceptive and disruptive behaviour and is focused on deliberately provoking and upsetting somebody.

Trolls are known to have a low level of empathy, guilt or responsibility for their actions; and have higher levels of sadism. "It is obvious enjoyment in causing physical and psychological pain to others, for apparently no other gain except for the fact that they like to hurt people. It's a very atypical form of social reward in which the reward is inflicting pain. In a twisted way, trolls have cognitive empathy, which means they understand the mind of the other person and exploit this awareness to make the other person feel bad," Dr Batra states.

Trolling is, for lack of a better/worse word, ridiculous, but for women, it is way more than just vicious. It is scary, demented and consequential. In a country, where the pathos of women safety can't be talked about enough and where one woman is raped every 15 minutes (no kidding, check out NCRB's 2018 report), no threat can be taken lightly. And that's the advantage these trolls have over our peace of mind. It throws you off, and makes you think of every conversation you've had with people around you, make you re-check every social media update, and also makes you feel like going inside a room and to make no contact with the world.

If we need a solution to fix the larger picture, we need to focus on the problem areas. We need to talk to the youth. We need to drive a conversation, as early as possible to talk about women's issues, mental health and social media.

What is Nanoengineering? (with pictures)

Nanoengineering is one field of nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is an umbrella term that encompasses all fields of science that operate on the nanoscale. A nanometer is one billionth of a meter, or three to five atoms in width. It would take approximately 40,000 nanometers lined up in a row to equal the width of a human hair. Nanoengineering concerns itself with manipulating processes that occur on the scale of 1-100 nanometers.

The general term, nanotechnology, is sometimes used to refer to common products that have improved properties due to being fortified with nanoscale materials. One example is nano-improved tooth-colored enamel, as used by dentists for fillings. The general use of the term nanotechnology then differs from the more specific sciences that fall under its heading.

Nanoengineering is an interdisciplinary science that builds biochemical structures smaller than bacterium, which function like microscopic factories. This is possible by utilizing basic biochemical processes at the atomic or molecular level. In simple terms, molecules interact through natural processes, and nanoengineering takes advantage of those processes by direct manipulation.

Nanoengineering, in its infancy, has seen some early successes with using DNA as a catalyst to self-assemble simple structures. In 2006 a Brown University research team was able to grow zinc oxide nanowires of approximately 100-200 nm in length by fusing snippets of synthetic DNA to carbon nanotubes. DNA, natures manual for creating matter from the bottom up, is of particular interest in the field of nanoengineering. By assembling specific DNA code a nanoengineer can set up the conditions for the genetic code to perform tasks that result in the biochemical assembly of nanomaterials.

The implications of being able to manipulate the growth of materials from the atomic level up are enormous. Nanoengineering could potentially lead to a plethora of revolutionary materials and products that would not only benefit areas like aerospace, medicine and technology, but everyday life. Nanoengineering could lead to such practical applications as self-cleaning paint that never fades or needs waxing; planes with skins that de-ice themselves and adjust to different aerodynamic environments; and more efficient and cleaner burning fuels.

One of the most exciting aspects of nanoengineering is that it is exceptionally cost-effective, environmentally friendly (raw product is abundant), non-polluting, and requires little energy. Nanoengineering is believed to be a promising field for young scientific minds looking for a chance to ride the leading edge of a groundbreaking wave of new science heading our way. It is widely believed nanotechnology will have a greater impact on the world than the Industrial Revolution and is predicted to be a multi-billion dollar business by 2015.

What does a nanotechnology engineer do? CareerExplorer

What does a Nanotechnology Engineer do?

A nanotechnology engineer seeks to learn new things that can change the face of health, science, technology, and the environment on a molecular level. They test for pollutants, create powders to enrich our foods and medicines, and study the smallest fragments of DNA. They can even manipulate cells, proteins, and other chemicals from within the body.

Nanotechnology engineers take advanced supplies and materials and turn them into something new and exciting. They may try to make a once heavy invention work better while weighing less, making the object far more efficient. They may also create new and improved ways of watching out and improving the environment by creating innovative ways to test for contaminants and pollutants in the air, ground, and water.

Nanotechnology engineers may also choose to work in the medical field creating new gadgets that can fix problems on a scale as small as the molecular level, thus changing the face of medicine forever. Those involved with bio-systems will create ways to store the tiniest amounts of DNA or other biological fragments for testing and manipulation.

Nanotechnology engineers that work with nanoelectronics will create smaller, more efficient chips, cards, and even smaller computer parts to make products that can do as much as bigger products without so much electronic waste.

Behind the scenes, these engineers must be good at paperwork and detailed description writing. They are responsible for writing extremely detailed reports describing their findings in their specific experiments.

Nanotechnology engineers work with the latest technology in scientific equipment and computers. Since all of the work in nanotechnology is microscopic, it can be expected that the workplace will involve many different high-tech microscopes that will allow the engineer to see things far smaller than are visible to the naked eye. Attention to detail is very important in this field, and the workplace facilitates that with few distractions and very focused teammates.

The workplace is most likely within a science research facility, a pharmaceutical company, or a medical supplies and equipment company, though there are many engineers who work for semiconductor manufacturing companies.

Nanotechnology Engineers are also known as:Nanotechnology and Microsystems Engineer

The United States Advanced Battery Consortium LLC (USABC), a subsidiary of the United States Council for Automotive Research LLC (USCAR), and a collaborative organization of FCA US LLC, Ford Motor Company and General Motors, has awarded a $2.4-million contract to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) to lead a program to develop low-cost/fast-charge batteries for electric vehicle (EV) applications.

Yan Wang, William Smith Deans Professor of Mechanical Engineering at WPI, is principal investigator of the three-year project. Other researchers are Heng Pan, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology; Ming Tang, assistant professor of materials science and nanoengineering at Rice University; and Bryan Yonemoto at Microvast Inc.

The contract award, which includes a 50% cost share, funds a 36-month project that began earlier this year. The program will develop low-cost and fast-charge batteries for EV applications, building on the technology of solvent-free electrode manufacturing.

There are two key issues for electric vehicle batteries: The cost is too high, and charging takes too long. The project goal is to lower the battery cost by 15% and charge the batteries in 15 minutes by manufacturing batteries with an innovative process.

Commercial lithium-ion car battery electrodes are typically made by mixing active materials that provide energy, conductive carbon, polymer binders, and solvents to create a thick mixture known as slurry. The slurry gets pasted onto a flat metal substrate, which then moves through a furnace for drying. The solvent is recovered via a complex evaporation-condensation process. Finally, rollers press the coated metal, which can be cut into pieces for assembly into batteries.

The team working on the USABC project will develop a process that sprays dry mixed materials directly onto the substrate, cutting out solvents, drying time, and equipment needed to recover solvents. The process will also tightly pack materials onto substrates, making for energy-dense, faster-charging batteries.

Tangs Rice lab will perform battery modeling to design new multilayered electrode architecture that significantly improves the rate capability of battery cells and allows them to be charged at higher rates. Microvast will assemble large-format pouch cells using layered electrodes and evaluate the electrochemical performance against the program goals

USABC is a subsidiary of the United States Council for Automotive Research LLC (USCAR). Enabled by a cooperative agreement with the US Department of Energy (DOE), USABCs mission is to develop electrochemical energy storage technologies that support commercialization of hybrid, plug-in hybrid, electric and fuel cell vehicles. In support of its mission, USABC has developed mid- and long-term goals to guide its projects and measure its progress.

Founded in 1992, USCAR is the collaborative automotive technology company for FCA US LLC, Ford Motor Company and General Motors. All USCAR Member companies have joined in becoming signatories of the Responsible Raw Materials Initiative (RRMI, now part of the Responsible Minerals Initiative, RMI) Declaration of Support.
