I’ve fallen and no one will help me up – Valley News

Zachary Elliott, Special to Valley News

Being the first one off the elevator, my mother-in-law didnt see the cord from the vacuum stretching across the hotel floor. As she stepped out, she tripped in front of a crowd of vacationers. She hit the ground with as much grace as possible while breaking her wrist. It was a painful and embarrassing ordeal.

Later as she recounted the incident, what shocked her most was that only one person stopped to help. Several people were exiting the elevator, and a handful of people were waiting to get on. All of them witnessed a grandmother hit the ground. Most people gasped, but only one stopped to help the poor woman lying on the ground. It was the classic situation of, Ive fallen and no one will help me up.

With such a lack of compassion and love for their neighbor, one has to wonder what kind of world people are living in. Have they become so self-centered and so busy that they dont have the heart, time or concern for a person, created in Gods image, to help them in their time of need? I hope not.

At the very least, this behavior should not be the case for the one who professes to be a follower of Christ. As Christians, its their Christ-like duty and privilege to love our neighbor as we love ourselves, even when its inconvenient, according to Matthew 22:39.

If Christians lose sight of what Jesus said was his second most important command, then they are really no better than animals. They are the ones who are to fulfill the golden rule of do to others whatever you would like them to do to you, from Matthew 7:12.

This life goal is precisely the example that Jesus modeled while he was on the earth. He came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many, in Mark 10:45.

And it is precisely the life he calls us to live out. As he said in the parable of the good Samaritan, Go and do likewise, in Luke 10:37.

Now here is where it gets serious. Jesus also said that when we love our neighbor, and our enemy for that matter, we are actually showing love toward him. Think of that!

While speaking on loving people, Jesus said, Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me, in Matthew 25:40.

Now, this statement changes everything.

I think its time we took a new perspective on helping people. In our culture of self-convenience, its time for the church, the people of God, to rise up and show the world how its done. The church knows that Greater love has no one than this: to lay down ones life for ones friends, from John 15:13.

It can no longer be inconvenient, uncomfortable or too costly. Its actually mandatory for anyone who professes the name of Christ. Christians are his people, and as such, they are to live like their master.

A Failure Of Imagination – The Standard

By David Todd McCarty | Friday, July 24, 2020

By the grace of reality and the nature of life, manevery manis an end in himself and exists for his own sake, and the achievement of his own happiness is his highest moral purpose.

Ayn Rand believed that rational selfishness was the ultimate expression of human nature, a philosophy perfectly captured in the 1987 movie Wall Street when Gordon Gecko tells room full of investors, Greed is good.

The fact that so many Republicans consider Rand to be a prophet and spiritual leader is maybe less surprising than it should be, given their adherence to laissez-faire capitalism, but you might expect them to be a little less self-congratulatory about their own avarice, out of sheer good taste.

There was a time when Republicans truly believed that free market capitalism was the best method for maintaining healthy, balanced economies, but after decades of abject failure, from Reagans trickle-down economics to Paul Ryans path to prosperity, their only viable strategy seems to be to simply embrace greed as a moral value worthy of religious rapture and run with it.

Liberals often denigrate conservatives as dull-witted, facile, religious fanatics, which given their rhetorical proclamations, is at times hard to refute, but the reality is far more complex than daft ignorance. While there is a certain amount of gamesmanship, strategy and willful ignorance involved, the key feature of conservatism is an almost total lack of imagination that results in an equal dearth of empathy.

Imagination is defined by Merriam-Webster as the act or power of forming a mental image of something not present to the senses or never before wholly perceived in reality. The creative ability to confront and deal with a problem without having a clear path to doing so.

Empathy, on the other hand, is the imaginative projection of a subjective state; the ability to be able to vicariously grasp the feelings, thoughts, and experiences of another without actually having the feelings, thoughts, and experiences fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner.

Put another way, imagination takes an act of faith, whereas empathy, an act of submission. To imagine something requires the ability to conceptualize something weve never experienced, while empathy demands that we experience something we may not be able to conceptualize.

Empathy is a spiritual exercise, obliging you to open yourself up to the pain of another, and requiring you to lose a bit of yourself in the process. Its an act of sacrifice; a selfless exploration into the world of another.

Beyond the metaphysical, there are practical reasons to incorporate imagination and empathy into public policy, and they generating new ideas involves risk-taking that requires courage and the ability to suppress fear. In a nutshell, you cannot leap off into the wild blue yonder if you are consumed by the fear of failure.

In order to innovate beyond what you already know, you need the ability to envision a variety of outcomes, and if you have the ability to experience the world through the eyes and emotions of others, not only might you be open to untold possibilities, but you will also be more likely to account for a wider range of outcomes.

For nearly a decade during the Obama administration, Republicans were not in a position to govern, so they adopted a posture of obstruction as their overarching ideology. When they finally found themselves in power, they were completely unprepared to govern. Theyd spent eight years complaining about Obamacare but when given the chance, they failed to come up with an alternative and continue almost four years later to try to dismantle it without ever having attempted to replace it.

Republicans are not creators, rather they operate most comfortably as critics. They are no longer for things as much as they are against things. But bigger than any other single issue or policy is the fundamental nature of the Republican Party, and that is they they do not believe in government.

Donald Trumps greatest measure of success within the Republican Party has been his willingness to install Cabinet Secretaries that do not believe in the departments they run. Donald Trump and his enablers have built nothing, but have rather spent the past 40 months dismantling, defunding and discrediting every regulation and consumer protection they could.

According to the framers of the United States of America, the very idea of government itself is instituted by men, deriving their powers by consent, in order to secure the rights of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. The purpose of government therefore is to protect the rights of citizens, not the corporate welfare of the ruling class.

America is a considerably larger and more complex country than the framers could have ever imagined. We have likely grown beyond the capacity of our current limitations and it will take people of substance to guide us into a sustainable future. We are going to need smart people capable of imagining a future that does not yet exist, and they will need the empathy to understand the importance of succeeding, as well as the consequences for failing to do so.

Government will always be about power to some degree, and there will always be winners and losers, but we should at least strive to hold it to the promise of protecting the rights of all Americans. That much, at the very least, it should strive to do.

If any society can be judged by how well its treats its most vulnerable, the very least we can do is have the empathy to imagine a country that is inherently greater than rational selfishness.

Big problems with the Paycheck Protection Program? – The Week

The smartest insight and analysis, from all perspectives, rounded up from around the web:

"The U.S. Small Business Administration released 4.8 million loan records detailing who received money from the $530 billion Paycheck Protection Program," said Taylor Borden at Business Insider and it's quite a list. Kanye West's Yeezy sneakers brand is on it, with a loan of $2 million to $5 million. So are the Girl Scouts of America, the Archdiocese of New York, the Ayn Rand Institute a think tank known for promoting "hard-core capitalism" and the anti-tax Americans for Tax Reform Foundation. "Meant to protect small business," the program, which offered forgivable loans to help save jobs, ended up sending money to large corporations, private schools, and even private clubs. Among the "well-heeled and well-connected" recipients were organizations linked to the Trump administration itself, said Ryan Tracy at The Wall Street Journal. An Indianapolis company part-owned by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos got a loan of at least $6 million; a company run by the family of Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao got a loan, too. So did Newsmax Media, run by Trump donor Christopher Ruddy. Large hospital and casino chains got loans for multiple subsidiaries, leading to complaints of misuse. Says one finance professor, "This was supposed to be a small-business program."

It's hard to evaluate just how effective the program has been, because the numbers released so far are full of mistakes, said Mark Niquette at Bloomberg. For instance, on the electronic system that lenders use to process applications, more than 550,000 loan recipients listed "zero" for the number of jobs retained and more than 320,000 left the line blank. Some of the data is flat wrong. The official list shows Herb Miller's "one-man business" in Hixson, Tennessee, getting as much as $5 million. The real amount: $3,700. With the numbers rolling in, "people are still confused, and even angry, over the ambitious, unprecedented experiment," said Emily Stewart at Vox. The flaws go far beyond issues with the data. The program's reliance on banks disadvantaged smaller businesses, "because banks can collect bigger fees for bigger loans." But the biggest problem was in the design, which created confusion "about what PPP was supposed to accomplish in the first place." Take the Mark Fisher Fitness studio in New York City. With a PPP loan, it was able to rehire in April the 28 employees who were laid off in March. But the money had to be used in two months and now that it's spent, the employees have been laid off again.

Don't get mad at Kanye West, said David Graham at The Atlantic. Naming and shaming companies that were "legally allowed to seek public stimulus funds" misses the mark. So what if a recipient has a celebrity CEO? "Each dollar they passed to employees was a dollar injected into the American economy." The "huge and hasty PPP was bound" to make mistakes, said The Washington Post in an editorial, but "the declining unemployment rates of the past two months suggest this broad approach did indeed help save jobs." Congress on a bipartisan basis agreed to write the rules "and ask questions later." Now the initial results of the program are finally public, and "Congress has enough time and data as well as a duty to fix it."

Daily Reformer: Hagehan The First Couple Of Minnesota Politics – Patch.com

From the Minnesota Reformer:

By J. Patrick CoolicanJuly 24, 2020

No surprise: With the virus surging in key states like Florida, Georgia, Texas, Arizona and southern California, data show the recovery is stalling out.

Ricardo Lopez on how police reform was a major achievement for the People of Color Indigenous Caucus, which was just formed in 2017.

(Also, I wrote in this space July 9: "Given Senate Republicans' lack of interest in serious police reform, the place for a deal is on a big infrastructure bill." I shall eat crow, and good on Senate Republicans for proving me wrong. And I was wrong twice cuz no infrastructure bill.)

We had a discussion at Reformer HQ about how to describe U.S. Rep. Jim Hagedorn and GOP Chair Jennifer Carnahan, who are married.

Are they Minnesota's own Kid Rock and Pam Anderson? Or how about Peg and Al Bundy?

Either way, they embarrassed themselves and all Minnesotans Thursday.

Carnahan:

Your math is wrong. Also, there's a lot of reliable information out there for general interest readers on the benefits of masking. Even your hero, the game show host president, is encouraging us to wear masks.

Hagedorn, meanwhile, was the only Minnesota member of Congress to vote no on a measure to remove confederate statues from the U.S. Capitol, as well as a bust of Roger Taney, to be replaced by one of Thurgood Marshall, Ricardo Lopez reports.

Roger Taney: Author of the Dred Scott decision.

Thurgood Marshall: Argued for the plaintiffs in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Ks.

Minnesota: The first state to volunteer troops to the Civil War effort.

Republicans have their summer retreat tonight and tomorrow at Madden's On Gull Lake in Brainerd. Tonight's featured speaker is said to be potential 2022 candidate for governor Mike Lindell, who uses infomercials to sell pillows. Also, buy his memoir What Are the Odds? signed hardcover, low low price: $49.95 buy it now before it's too late!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fox News poll of Minnesota: Joe Biden 51, President Donald Trump 38. (Gov. Tim Walz polling well, as are local police and Black Lives Matter.)

David Shor would tell us we should expect reversion to the mean, meaning tightening.

And Minnesota's own James Hohmann points out in his Post column that Dems should be concerned about turnout. Those polls may not be what they seem. And APM Reports' Tom Scheck et. al. have a scary story about votes disqualified in the Wisconsin primary due to user error, and whether it's a scary preview of what's to come in November. 23,000 votes were thrown out. (Trump's 2016 margin was just shy of 23,000. Yikes.)

Mall of America owner Triple Five has missed mortgage payments and has no reopen plan for its $5 billion American Dream mall in New Jersey.

An interesting, diverse mix of writers on the Strib op-ed page argue the City Council is falling down on the job when it comes to the Police Department.

Vice has a lengthy story on the upcoming DFL primary in the 5th Congressional District, leading with a recent mailer Rep. Ilhan Omar sent out ripping the challenger Antone Melton-Meaux for accepting big donations from out-of-state donors.

"Can We Trust Antone Melton-Meaux's Money?"

What do you know they're all Jewish.

Reformer contributor Rabbi Avi Olitzky of the Beth El Synagogue in St. Louis Park, who endorsed Melton-Meaux this week, is quoted: "My immediate thought when I saw the mailer was 'Here we go again.'"

Her Jewish supporters defend her in the piece:

As an adolescent I believed former President Bill Clinton was sending "jack-booted thugs" to trample on our liberties. (Who else here is in Ayn Rand recovery? No shame in it! One day at a time!)

As an adult in the era of former President Barack Obama, the Republican claims of "tyranny" sounded both hysterical and disingenuous, especially after the Patriot Act and warrantless surveillance of the Bush era that they often supported.

And now this:

If you're a libertarianish Republican: This is it. It's happening. You warned us that confiscatory taxation was a stone's throw from federal agents violating our rights. Well, now it's happening. What are you doing about it?

I asked readers Thursday how you're caring and feeding your souls and got some nice responses:

Local bookstore owner L.E. writes that "My mostly harmless mission is to offer people the sorts of books that either inform this time or help them through this time. This is Happiness, by Niall Williams, is the latter. It's about everything in life. Love, loss, hunger, family, etc. All of this within the structure of an epic tale about how rural electrification comes to a small Irish village."

Reader P.F. is reading the graphic novels and nonfiction, including Open Borders and Banned Book Club, which is set in South Korea in the early 1980s. "Yeah, they're illustrated books, but it's a lot easier to swallow content like that right now," P.F. writes.

K.M. listens to podcasts while biking and recommends Pitchfork Economics and says she's learned more from it than any Econ 101 course ever.

And reader S.S. is reading The Great Evil: Christianity, the Bible, and the Native American Genocide but only when she can steal it back from her boyfriend, who took it from her after Chapter 2. Hey Mike: Give it back!

Why Its Time to Start Using Artificial Intelligence in Your Greenhouse – Greenhouse Grower

Luna by iUNU is a greenhouse AI platform using aerial robots on tracks that scan the entire production area several times a day using computer vision.Photo courtesy of Sunrise Greenhouses

With todays automated climate-control systems, managing the greenhouse environment and its systems has never been easier. The management of all equipment under one system, including heating, venting, and irrigation, provides optimal efficiency and precision in terms of systems management and data collection.

The development of these technologies allows growers to be more focused on their crops and provides control at their fingertips. Digital parameters are defined by crop level observations, which represent the modern-day dynamic between plants, the grower, and technology.

Increasing development of artificial intelligence (AI) has allowed the greenhouse sector to further improve efficiency and precision, thereby changing that dynamic. Thanks to the work of researchers and private companies, AI is allowing plants to communicate directly with climate-control systems, as well as the grower. It notifies them when there are issues within the crop relating to growth rate, pests, and disease. AI is not only helping growers identify when there is a problem, it is also predicting long-term effects of the issue via harvest forecasting.

Who Is Developing AI for the Greenhouse?

Wageningen University and Research (WUR) is one of the academic institutions leading the way in the development of AI-controlled cultivation. In 2018, WUR hosted an autonomous growing competition where Microsoft took first place over several other teams, including a team of Dutch growers.

A host of private companies including Motorleaf, LetsGrow.com, and Illumitex already have commercially available platforms. Sunrise Greenhouses has been an early adopter of the technology, integrating AI in two areas of its production. The decision to start using AI was driven by the desire for improved efficiency and to help manage skilled labor shortages by expanding employee capacity.

The first system, Luna by iUNU, is a greenhouse AI platform using aerial robots on tracks that scan the entire production area several times a day using computer vision. Images are uploaded for analysis using algorithms customized to production requirements and translated for access on any device. Historical data is used to identify anomalies within the crop, alerting the grower or the climate-control system and providing an unprecedented level of oversight.

The second technology, Watchdog by Bold Robotic Solutions, is a production line AI system developed to monitor equipment for production issues and efficiency. Watchdog is currently installed on our potting line, monitoring pots moving from the potting machine to the tagger, transplanter, and placing robots. The system provides visual and audible alarms for issues such as an empty pot dispenser or pots that have fallen over. A series of sensors also allows the system to observe patterns and make timing corrections by controlling the equipment, thus removing repetitive corrective burdens from the operator.

What Are the Challenges?

In the upcoming years, there is no doubt the role AI will play in the evolution of the greenhouse industry. That being said, these game-changing technologies will not come without challenges, specifically during the early years of technology adoption.

While both solutions have different functions, they are based on the same self-learning technology that uses neural networks and machine learning. Like us, it takes time for the systems to learn patterns and crop cycles. As a seasonal grower with product cycles of up to two years in duration, patience is necessary. It takes time to collect the data for these systems to work and learn.

Greenhouse environments are also challenging for technology implementation due to broad temperature and humidity ranges, which influence both the electronic and mechanical components that contribute to their ongoing development. This can be a frustration for staff trying to complete their weekly plans.

AI solutions for greenhouse growers are still in their initial phases of development and have been mostly implemented by early adopters. As more players in the industry move toward the latest greenhouse technologies, we can expect the number of out-of-the-box AI solutions on the market to increase. For now, AI adopters will likely require some patience as the product learns the intricacies specific to their growing environment before it produces state-of-the-art results.

How Are Staff Trained?

The integration of these systems requires changes to processes, which can be disruptive to production, so flexibility and managing expectations is important among staff. When identifying new equipment, we involve staff in the process. When staff understand what we are trying to accomplish and can provide input, the transition is generally much smoother. People are more willing to adapt when they understand how the technology will make their lives easier. That said, providing people with training and, more importantly, ongoing support is key to the successful integration of these new technologies into your business.

The high level of granularity in digital crop surveillance can save money through early identification of problems related to pests, disease, moisture management, and climate. Photo courtesy of Sunrise Greenhouses

What Are the Benefits?

Having systems that continuously monitor equipment and cultivation allows staff to focus on less redundant tasks, which improves efficiency and the experience and quality of work. The high level of granularity in terms of crop surveillance has saved money due to the early identification of problems related to pests, disease, moisture management, and climate. This allows issues to be dealt with before they proliferate.

Working with iUNU, both our Production Manager and Sales Manager can access inventory in real-time, which has uncoupled departments in our facility that were previously dependent on one another for decision making. This is just one example of the increase in efficiency we are seeing as a result of these technologies.

Facilities that are focused on crop yields, such as vegetable growers, can benefit from AI developed by companies like Motorleaf, who offer yield-predicting products. They consider variables such as historical weather forecasts, nutrient ratios, daily temperatures, and humidity levels. These products train themselves to predict harvest yields with accuracies that are far superior to what is achieved by traditional forecasting methods.

Lee Fisher is the Innovations Manager at Sunrise Greenhouses Ltd., a 250,000 square-foot ornamentals operation in Vineland Station, Ontario, Canada. His background is in computer software engineering, as well as integrated pest management. See all author stories here.

Why Its Time to Start Using Artificial Intelligence in Your Greenhouse - Greenhouse Grower

Is Artificial Intelligence really ‘intelligent’? – TheArticle

When Artificial Intelligence was in its infancy it was quite natural to give it a sonorous name. It needed to attract money and talent. It has since become a mainstream subject that seeks to imitate human intelligence. See a recent definition:Artificial Intelligence is the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages.

Speech recognition, I remember the first steps. It was the late 1950s. I worked in industry. A colleague of mine, two benches away, had the job of recognising and printing out some limited speech consisting of the numbers from one to ten. He talked to an oscilloscope and watched the appearing waveform. He hoped to identify the numbers from the zero crossings on the oscilloscope, ie when the waveform changed sign. One day he told me that the problem had been solved. His machine had been able to recognise all those numbers. May I try it? I asked. By all means, he said. I tried, and counted up to ten. The machine ignored me. Several other people tried and failed too. As it turned out later, the machine could only work if addressed in a Polish accent. That was a long time ago. Since then software has been commercially available that understands not only those born in this country but also Hungarians, known to be mercilessly massacring the English language.

Machines can of course do a lot more nowadays than understand the spoken word. But are they intelligent? Where should our quest for intelligence take us? Games are good candidates. Let us look at a number of them starting with a simple one: Noughts and Crosses.

It is a trivial example. There are only nine squares. The machine can look at all combinations of moves and countermoves. They amount to about 35,000.Draughts is a game incomparably more complicated, but there are too many possible moves. Brute force, ie looking at all the possibilities, does not work. So what can be done?

A strategy was envisaged by Arthur Samuel whose first program goes back to 1959. He introduced a score function, which assessed the chances that any given move would eventually lead to a win. The function took into account the number of kings and how close any of the pieces were to becoming king. Samuel also introduced machine learning. He fed thousands of games into the computer, pinpointing winning strategies. He did his programming on an IBM computer. His machine could beat amateurs but not professionals. But even this partial success led to IBM stock rising, with the birth of this new computer application: games.

The game that stands above them all is chess. There is no chance of exhausting all possible moves, so it comes down to Samuels methods, a score function and learning from examples. Oddly enough this way of learning was first practised by a fictional character in Stefan Zweigs Schachnovelle published in 1941 (recently mentioned by Raymond Keene in a column in these pages). The main character, an Austrian aristocrat, was imprisoned by the Nazis. While in solitary confinement he managed to get hold of a book containing all the moves in a high level Chess Tournament. Not having anything else to read, he just played them in his mind again and again and again. When he was released, his mental state was affected, but his play was good enough to beat the World Champion. Deep Blue, IBMs computer trained to play chess, beat Kasparov, the reigning champion in the real world, in 1997 in a six-game match. Deep Blue had a three-way strategy. It played countless games (like the Austrian aristocrat), it had a score function and used Brute Force to evaluate the game six or seven moves ahead.

The machines victory is regarded as the greatest triumph of Artificial Intelligence, although it was somewhat marred by Kasparovs claim that IBM cheated. He said that the machine must have been occasionally overruled by a human player, and this amounted to cheating because he would play differently against a human player than against a machine. The controversy was never resolved. IBM dismantled the machine very soon after the end of the match. Was Deep Blue intelligent? Not really, because it just did what it was programmed for. Its main advantage was speed. The programmers were intelligent (even if they cheated), Deep Blue was not.

So lets go to GO, regarded by orientals as the supreme game. The computer, Deep Mind, challenged grandmasters including the world champion about three years ago. The computer won hands down. The main reason for winning was that a lot has happened in AI since Deep Blue. There has been a radical change in programming philosophy, It started with no knowledge of the game and built up its expertise by studying millions of actual games. It trained itself for the singular purpose of playing GO. It was a radical departure from previous approaches by not feeding into the computer any preliminary information on the nature of the game in question. It started from scratch, just like a non-swimmer thrown in at the deep end of a swimming pool.

Games are games. They are excellent demonstrations of how to solve problems where the criteria of success are well defined, and the rules are known. But let us widen our scope and look at a much-predicted product of Artificial Intelligence driverless cars. If perfected, could this be regarded as matching human intelligence? I think the answer is yes. Driverless cars would, no doubt, be a great improvement over human-driven cars. They have many advantages. They would never be under the influence of alcohol nor drugs, they would never race a fellow-driverless car. They would never try to show off to impress a girl-friend and they would never fall asleep.

Even so, we are still very far from the driverless stage. When will they be ready? In a year or two? In ten years? In thirty years? Next century, perhaps? Part of the reason is technical. How can they be trained? Not like GO. Driverless cars cannot learn by going up and down a street a million times. Even a thousand times would not go down well with those living there. And even if everything goes well with the first two thousand journeys down a street, something new the development of a new junction might invalidate all that training. And that was only one street.

If that wasnt enough, there is a psychological barrier as well the fear of accidents. It may very well happen that driverless cars turn out to be safer than those driven by ordinary mortals. They might cause only, say, 900 fatal accidents in a year in contrast to the 1,700 caused by human drivers in the UK. Will we be happy? Unlikely. We accept human errors because we often commit them ourselves. But if there were ever a fatal accident caused by a driverless car we would blame the manufacturers and demand that their product should be banned from the roads.

Much of what goes on at the moment as Artificial Intelligence is hype. Many of the functional applications already in existence need no intelligence, but use instead the assiduous collection of data combined with known techniques of automation. On the whole I would claim that the programmers are intelligent, but the machines are not. In one application, driving cars, machine intelligence might indeed surpass human intelligence but that application may never come. Machines could of course help humans in arriving at decisions, say diagnoses in medicine, but very few patients would be happy if the decisions were made by machines alone.

Herkimer County officials want to help Remington if they can – The Times Telegram

The approximately 300 full-time workers furloughed from their jobs at the Remington Arms plant in Ilion are expected to return to work within a month after certain suppliers, shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, can provide raw materials again.

Still, news of the furloughs along with a Wall Street Journal report that the company is preparing to file for bankruptcy for the second time in two years and could be sold to the Navajo Nation has local officials concerned for Remington, Herkimer Countys largest employer. Theyre willing to help if they can.

With the North Carolina-based company in bankruptcy proceedings, however, there isnt a lot that can be done right now, said Herkimer County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) Executive Director John Piseck.

"They havent had any discussions with us," he said. He pointed out that the company partial ownership through a hedge fund also makes it more difficult to get involved.

Local officials "maybe" could work out a payment in lieu of taxes (PILOT) agreement "if the owners reached out," Piseck said. The IDA offers such tax breaks to assist businesses particularly those that are just starting up or seek to expand.

"Id hate to see (Remington) close," Piseck said, adding he would not want to see the area lose manufacturing jobs. "Weve got a governor whos against firearms even though there are several major gun manufacturers in New York state."

A request for comment to Remington was not immediately returned before press time.

Village limited

Ilion Mayor Brian Lamica said he found out about the furloughs at Remington the same way as everybody else: Through media reports.

And while the IDA could potentially help, Lamica said the Village of Ilion "is not financially able to do anything," but added he would be willing to reach out to the areas state and federal representatives on the companys behalf.

Remington has received such assistance in the past.

This includes a 2008 financial package that included a $1.5 million state grant and $1.5 million from the Empire State Development Corporation to bring jobs to Ilion and help fund upgrades. In 2011, the New York Power Authority approved the allocation of 3,250 kilowatts to Ilion to provide low-cost municipal power to Remington a move then-Mayor John Stephens said would result in a substantial savings for the company.

"If needed, we could offer them a place to have meetings or for people to sign up for benefits," Lamica said.

Lamica said Remingtons struggles are felt at the local level.

"Every time theres a furlough, that takes away 300, 400 or 500 people who would be buying lunch or getting gas while theyre in the village," he said. "That hurts our local economy."

With news headlines about various shootings, Lamica said, he has heard that banks are not quick to lend to firearms manufacturers.

"In a way, thats attacking our Second Amendment rights," he said. "Nobody forces anybody to buy a gun. People who use them in an improper fashion are not the type of people we want to have guns. What we need to do is enforce the laws that are on the books, not create new laws."

Petitions of the week: Political donations, gun rights, the emoluments clause and more – SCOTUSblog

Posted Thu, July 23rd, 2020 1:45 pm by Andrew Hamm

This week we highlight cert petitions pending before the Supreme Court that ask the court to weigh in on a variety of hot-button constitutional and political issues. One petition, in Lieu v. Federal Election Commission, asks the court to decide whether federal limits on political donations can, under the First Amendment, be applied to donations to so-called super PACs. Another petition, in Zoie H. v. Nebraska, asks the court to review, under the Second and Sixth Amendments, a state law that allows juvenile courts, without a jury trial, to bar certain individuals from possessing firearms until age 25. And a third petition, in Blumenthal v. Trump, asks the court to wade into a lawsuit by 29 Democratic senators alleging that President Donald Trump is violating the Constitutions emoluments clause.

These and otherpetitions of the weekare below the jump:

Lieu v. Federal Election Commission19-1398Issue: Whether the federal statutory limit on contributions to political committees,52 U.S.C. 30116(a)(1)(C), comports with the First Amendment as applied to committees that make only independent expenditures.

Hughes v. Northwestern University19-1401Issue: Whether allegations that a defined-contribution retirement plan paid or charged its participants fees that substantially exceeded fees for alternative available investment products or services are sufficient to state a claim against plan fiduciaries for breach of the duty of prudence under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974,29 U.S.C. 1104(a)(1)(B).

Zacarias v. Janvey19-1402Issue: Whether a district court in a receivership action has Article III jurisdiction to bar investor claims for individual injuries when the receiver lacks standing to bring those claims himself due to the lack of an injury to the receivership estate.

Rupert v. Janvey19-1411Issue: Whether the standing requirement of Article III limits receivers to bringing claims that are coextensive with the receivership estate and thus whether Article III precludes receivers from bringing, settling and barring claims of third parties against non-receivership entities.

United States v. Cooley19-1414Issue: Whether the lower courts erred in suppressing evidence on the theory that a police officer of an Indian tribe lacked authority to temporarily detain and search the respondent, Joshua James Cooley, a non-Indian, on a public right-of-way within a reservation based on a potential violation of state or federal law.

Zoie H. v. Nebraska19-1418Issue: Whether the Second and Sixth Amendments permit a state to deprive an individual of the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms based on the commission of an offense while denying the accused a right to a jury trial for that offense.

Blumenthal v. Trump20-5Issue: Whether legislators have standing to seek judicial relief when their votes have been completely nullified underRaines v. Byrd.

Meet the Candidates: Monroe Boat Club hosts Monroe Township candidate forum ahead of August primary – Bedford Now

Since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, opportunities to speak to constituents about local government face-to-face have become scarce.

Since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, opportunities to speak to constituents about local government face-to-face have become scarce.

Thats why several candidates for Monroe Township and some county offices jumped at the opportunity to introduce themselves, speak with voters and discuss local issues ahead of the Aug. 4 primary election.

Monroe Boat Club, 7932 Bolles Harbor Dr., hosted a Meet the Candidates event Thursday night, which welcomed local candidates, along with some seeking county offices, for remarks and a question-and-answer period. The event was held outdoors, adhering to recommended social distancing requirements.

Candidates provided brief backgrounds, explained why theyre running for office and provided a few key issues which prompted their decision to run for office.

I thought it was an opportunity to see what other options are out there for me to serve the community, said Jerry Oley, a Democrat and vice-chairman of the Monroe County Board of Commissioners whos running for Monroe County Clerk/Register of Deeds.

I think I have a lot more to offer Monroe County.

His challenger, Sandra Blank, also a Democrat and retired administrative assistant for the Michigan Department of Corrections, hinted at minimal changes she aims to make in the post after becoming familiar with the office and its staff.

My idea, if I win, is to work (in the clerks office) for a little while and get a feel for the opinions of those who work there, Blank said. I will have to give it a try before implementing any changes.

Locally, citizens seemed most concerned about the township making quick improvement to the LaPlaisance Rd. bridge construction, which is expected to include bridge reconstruction and a reconstruction of the I-75 interchange.

Residents also asked candidates about their positions on second amendment rights, and even asked about the recent debate over the Gen. George Armstrong Custer statue, although thats in the City of Monroes jurisdiction.

The following is a roundup of remarks from candidates for Monroe Township offices who spoke during the candidate forum, in alphabetical order, along with their political affiliation and offices sought:

Al Barron, Democrat, supervisor (incumbent)

Updating the public on the LaPlaisance Rd. bridge reconstruction project, discussing the future of medical marijuana facilities in the township and continuing to support the areas public safety forces were at the forefront of Barrons reelection message.

Weve come a long way here, he said. I think the biggest thing (improved) during my term has been the fire department It still should be a main priority.

Barron has served as township supervisor since 1992, seven terms. From 1988-92, he served as trustee.

Wayne Blank, Republican, supervisor

Improving township communication and interaction with citizens are Blanks top priorities in his bid for the supervisors post. For the first time publicly, he announced that hes running for half-pay, stating that hes not in the race for the money.

Ive got a little bit of experience leading, and I think I would bring that to Monroe Township, he said. I would like to see people get involved with the township, the community I plan on making Monroe Township a center for citizens.

Blank has served as a township trustee since 2016. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1967-71.

Terrance Guido Gerin, Republican, trustee

Better known by ring-name Rhyno, Gerin is a professional wrestler. Moving to the area just two years ago, he said he recently became involved in local politics.

I started going to meetings and thats how I really started getting involved, he said. Some politicians get really caught up in things and dont listen to citizen concerns One of the things Id like to do as trustee is talk with the citizens.

Gerin is the owner of Big Daddys Boat Yard, 13931 Bridge Dr. in Raisinville Township., a marina and boat storage facility. This is his first local political office sought, although he was a 2016 candidate to represent District 15 in the Michigan House.

Richard Janssens, Republican, trustee

If elected, Janssens says he wont miss a beat as trustee, a position he formerly held. Hes known for advocating for fiscal responsibility and wants to ensure essential township services are maintained throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

Hopefully I can pick up where I last left off as trustee, he said.

Janssens retired from DTE Energy and was a farmer. He served in the U.S. Army.

John Manor, Republican, trustee (incumbent)

Monroe is a gateway community, Manor said, but sometimes is treated like a doorstep. Growing businesses in the township, along with supporting nonprofits as the community recovers from COVID-19, are at the heart of his bid for reelection.

What I thoroughly love about local politics is knowing exactly who youre helping, he said. I think, locally, weve had a lot of opportunity to know the people we are helping.

Manor is a current township trustee. He previously worked for the Michigan Legislature.

Kevin Raymo, Republican, trustee

In brief remarks, Raymo said he supports sound fiscal spending in the township. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to speak to the public in person, a format thats been scarce amid COVID-19.

We need to keep people safe, but not create a panic, he said in a response to a questionnaire from The Monroe News. We need to keep the economy moving forward. Make both parties, Democrats and Republicans, work together for what is best for the citizens we represent.

Raymo is a retired 911 dispatcher for Monroe County Central Dispatch.

The following township candidates who are up for reelection did not attend the forum: Clerk Christina Smith, Republican; Treasurer Penny D. Barton, Democrat; Trustee William Heck Jr., Democrat.

Guy Howe, a Republican, also is a candidate for trustee who did not attend.

Katybeth Davis, a Democrat, is running as a write-in district delegate during the August primary and trustee in the November general election. She also was not present.

Annamarie Osmet, a Republican, is running for Monroe County Clerk/Register of Deeds, along with Oley and Blank, but did not attend.

Hobble Creek Wranglers target love of firearms and Old West – Deseret News

By Isaac HaleDaily Herald

SPRINGVILLE Its a hot, summer afternoon, and a posse of cowboys and cowgirls with aliases such as Lonesome Hart, Tamarack, Anita Gunn and Colt Colton are gathering at the mouth of Hobble Creek Canyon in Springville. Dressed in Old West attire, with single-action six-shooters, rifles and shotguns in hand, theyve come to see who has the keenest eye and fastest trigger finger of the bunch on this side of the Wasatch.

No, this isnt a rerun of some old Western movie, this is a modern-day club shoot for the Hobble Creek Wranglers, Utah Countys only Cowboy Action Shooting Club.

Of all of the shooting sports Ive done, this is by far the most fun, said Springville resident Bob Marshall, who is the groups president.

Cowboy Action Shooting is a sport that incorporates firearms and costumes from the Old West (typically the period from 1860-1900) and aims to bring people together through a mutual love of firearms and preserving the history of the Old West. Cowboy Action Shooting is governed by the Single Action Shooting Society, an international organization founded in 1987.

I think its the hardest shooting sport and the most fun because you dont just master one gun, you have to use four of them in every stage, explained Marshall. Its the best people that Ive ever shot around.

In Cowboy Action Shooting, each shooting sequence is called a scenario, where participants use two pistols, a rifle and a shotgun to hit a series of metal targets in a certain order as fast as possible.

The trick to doing this, at least for me, is counting, explained Michael Snelson, a Springville resident and also the secretary and treasurer of the group. Some people look at the shapes of the targets and they do it by shape, some people count by how many shots have to go on each target. One of the most used scenarios is called a Nevada sweep. There will be four targets set up, well start on target one, sweep the four targets, and then come back and sweep them again.

Each scenario begins with a spotter hitting a timer, and as soon as the scenario begins, shooters pull out their first pistol from their holster and shoot five rounds into the targets, then they pull out their next pistol and shoot five more rounds. Upon shooting all the pistol rounds, the shooter then moves a few feet to the next selection of targets where a rifle is sitting on a table. The shooter fires on the targets until the rifle is empty, then heads to a central table where a shotgun is waiting. The shooter shoots two rounds, loads two more, and then time is called.

For a fast shooter, the whole sequence is usually completed in about a dozen seconds.

Its challenging; it is not easy to go out and do this, said Karen Doty, 79, a resident of Hemet, California, who stopped by the Hobble Creek Wranglers June shoot with her husband, Ron Doty, 82, while in the county visiting family and attending a baby blessing. The two are graduates of Brigham Young University, and go by the aliases Spokane and Colt Colton, respectively.

For Cowboy Action Shooting, its not only about shooting like a cowboy, but also dressing and playing the part, too.

In addition to only using guns designed before 1900, all members of the Single Action Shooting Society are required to make an effort to dress like a character from the Old West period. Their choice of who to role play is up to them. Along with the costumes, every shooter also has a unique alias.

For many, their alias says something about themselves, or their familys history. For others, its an homage to their favorite Old West gunslinger, or even just some silly wordplay or a name that simply sounded cool.

For Karen Spokane Doty, her alias pays tribute to her hometown of Spokane, Washington. I dress like an old schoolmarm from prior to 1900, said Karen with a smile, gesturing to her long, black dress, black vest with a long-sleeved white button-up underneath and a black, flat-brimmed hat atop her head all of which are made from heavy, durable materials.

You kind of come here in a make-believe state, and it kind of stays through the day while youre shooting, said president Bob Marshall, who goes by the alias Hobble Creek Marshal because of his last name, and the fact that he lives in the mouth of Hobble Creek Canyon.

Though the cowboy and cowgirl costumes are a bit of role playing, the camaraderie between shooters is quite real. Several shooters explained that its the people that keep them coming back the second Saturday of each month from March through November for the clubs shoots. Be it some good-natured horseplay or a rivalry, the people of Cowboy Action Shooting keep each shoot fresh and fun.

The second time I shot in the state championship shoot, I won it, said Marshall. The next year, there was a guy that was kind of my nemesis at the time. The day before the shoot I was having problems with my rifle, and he came over and said, Ive got this extra rifle and Id rather you shoot this because if I beat you I want it to be because I outshot you, not because you had problems with a rifle. I didnt shoot good anyway, but thats not the point, he said with a laugh. Thats the kind of people the sports made up with.

Winter Range is the name of the Single Action Shooting Societys national championship, and End of Trail is the name of the groups international championship. Winners dont win any cash prizes, but receive cowboy gear along with trophy-like belt buckles, and of course, bragging rights. Utahs Single Action Shooting Societys state title is also an annual contest, which cycles to different shooting ranges in the state. According to Michael Snelsons last count, there are 16 clubs in Utah, all holding their club shoots on varying days of the month. If we wanted to, we could shoot every week, said Snelson.

Like any shooting sport, gun safety is as integral a part of Cowboy Action Shooting as any of its theatrics.

There are a lot of rules with Cowboy Action Shooting to make sure we stay safe and people dont get shot, said Snelson. There has hardly ever been anyone since the 1980s injured in Cowboy Action Shooting. Everybody understands the safety rules, and theyre watching out for infractions.

For example, guns point into earthen berms when loading and unloading, rifles and shotguns are carried uncocked, vertically with the barrel up, when on range, guns cannot be pointed any wider than 170 degrees from downrange, and only five rounds are loaded into six-shooting pistols so if the gun did fire accidentally, theres an empty chamber up first. Along with missing targets, safety infractions also add time to lower a shooters score. If the safety infraction is egregious enough like dropping a loaded gun the shooter is disqualified from the shoot for the day.

Ive been a shooting cowboy with this club for 14 years, and Ive traveled around to other places, but Ive never seen anybody hurt, Snelson said.

Though Snelson admitted that many of the clubs shooters are older men primarily because of the high cost of buying four firearms, ammo and an outfit to be a regular with the club Cowboy Action Shooting values diversity in its shooters and their skills.

The beauty of this game is that theres something for everyone, said Kirk Ekins, who goes by the alias Rusty Razor, due to his aversion to shaving his long, thick beard. Ekins, and his wife, Lisa, are both Utah state champs in Cowboy Action Shooting. Im pretty competitive and I do fairly well, he said. Theres one shooter where hell shoot a stage in 80 seconds and Ill shoot it in 20 seconds, and he tells me he had four times more fun. Its whatever you want to be. There are people who just love the costumes. Weve got wives that show up for banquet that never shoot a gun, but they love to dress up in Victorian gowns, and then theres the collector that likes his old Colts and original guns. You can be competitive, you can just cheer for the crowd, whatever; theres something for everyone in this game.

However, one common thread among shooters is an appreciation for the Second Amendment. We love our country, and this is one thing that we do to show that support, Snelson said.

We really wish that people who would like to see the Second Amendment not be what it is today, we would like to get them out to the range and let them try this so they can get a feel for it, explained Snelson. For people that havent done it or dont like the Second Amendment, wed like to have them shoot with us and see what its all about. Weve had people come up who think they were afraid of guns because of what theyve seen, and we actually get a gun in their hand and they shoot, and they have a great time doing it.
