NCLA Warns FDA’s Over-regulation Will Adversely Affect Public Health During Crisis – GlobeNewswire

Washington, D.C., April 14, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- If weve learned anything from the COVID-19 pandemic, it is that federal agencies that overstep their authority hinder the health and safety of Americans. Other recent regulatory actions by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) threaten to undermine the ability of clinical laboratories to provide healthcare professionals and patients with information critical to optimizing drug usage and avoiding adverse events. The New Civil Liberties Alliance is especially concerned that the FDAs decision to prevent the dissemination of information related to the impact of genetic variants on drug response (Pharmacogenomics or PGx) will adversely affect public health.

Today NCLA, a nonpartisan, nonprofit civil rights group, filed commentsin support of the Citizen Petition filed on January 9, 2020, by Hyman, Phelps & McNamara, P.C. on behalf of the Coalition to Preserve Access to Pharmacogenomics (Pgx) Information. NCLAs comments focus on two concerns: (1) FDAs efforts to suppress truthful speech violate the First Amendment rights of clinical laboratories as well as of those doctors and patients who wish to receive PGx information from those labs; and (2) FDAs defense of its speech suppression cannot be reconciled with the U.S. Constitutions separation of powers. FDA claims unlimited administrative discretion to prohibit the operation of all clinical laboratories, but it does not have the power to prosecute only those laboratories that disseminate truthful information of which FDA disapproves.

FDAs position also raises significant due-process concerns because it deprives the regulated community of fair notice of how to conform its conduct to FDAs expectations and permits enforcement officials to make up the rules on the fly. Laboratories have long been at the forefront of efforts to quickly develop tests for detecting the presence of new pathogens; they need considerable flexibility to meet the publics time-sensitive need for such tests. FDA should rescind its speech-suppression policy for laboratories that engage in PGx testing. Any new FDA policy on PGx tests should be developed through a notice-and-comment rulemaking proceeding that complies with the Administrative Procedure Act.

FDA simply lacks constitutional authority to adopt legislation of its own accord and then proceed to apply that legislation to the regulated community. Only Congress may adopt federal laws restricting individual liberty. FDA should grant the Citizen Petition filed by the Coalition.

A blood test may be able to detect the most common form of pancreatic cancer while it is still in its early stages while also helping doctors accurately stage a patients disease and guide them to the appropriate treatment. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), the most common form of pancreatic cancer, is the third leading cause of cancer deaths. The overall five-year survival rate is just 9%, and most patients live less than one year following their diagnosis. One of the biggest challenges is catching the disease before it has progressed or spread. If the disease is caught early, patients may be candidates for surgery to remove the cancer, which can be curative. For locally advanced patientsmeaning patients whose cancer has not spread beyond the pancreas but who are not candidates for surgery based on the size or location of the tumortreatment involves three months of systemic therapy like chemo or radiation, then reassessing to see if surgery is an option. For patients whose disease has spread, there are currently no curative treatment options.

Right now, the majority of patients who are diagnosed already have metastatic disease, so there is a critical need for a test that can not only detect the disease earlier but also accurately tell us who might be at a point where we can direct them to a potentially curative treatment, saysthe studys co-senior authorErica L. University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez Student Participates in Exchange To Stay on Track With Her MBA – WNMU News

Diana Velez Cartaya is a masters of business administration student from the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez (UPRM). She is taking an online business statistics course this spring and was the first student who enrolled in a WNMU course since our universities entered a memorandum of understanding last fall.

The past biology student had begun a bioengineering program at UPRM but soon realized it was not for her. Thinking about other options, I figured having a degree as flexible as an MBA would still allow me to work in the health field but taking a more administrative role, she says. With science its black and white but business offers you the gray part of the spectrum.

In her third semester, shes hoping to graduate in spring 2021, but due to having started in a different field, shes behind her classmates. Courses are offered only every other semester at UPRM, so the option to take statistics online through WNMU helps Diana catch up. This works with my schedule, she says.

Diana says she prefers how WNMU evaluates students in the MBA program. In my current classes, we have tests with bigger weights. With this course, we have lots of smaller opportunities to make sure our grades are doing well and to learn in smaller chunks. I think the pace of this course is helpful for the learners.

The format of this course offers a fresh way for Diana and her peers to contribute to the class as well. Instead of it having to be based on quizzes or face to face, you can still interact and help other peers through online platforms. The way I see it is communication is slowly becoming more online, and its time most institutions had these options that are more student-centered, she says.

Diana feels a sense of gratitude for the chance to be a WNMU student. I just think that its a good option for us to have here at our university, she says.

THERE is no doubt that the teaching of history in schools and at university has become drearily Left-wing, whether in its uncritical portrayals of communism, its demonisation of the West, or a personal favourite, the fixation on herstory. There is a serious lack of dissenting voices within academia to call out its agenda-driven, narrow-minded smugness. Journalist and author Douglas Murray said quite poignantly that it is one curiosity of academia in recent decades that it has found almost nothing it does not wish to deconstruct, apart from itself.

A study by the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) has reported that one fifth of social scientists in the United States describe themselves as Marxists, compared with only about 5 per cent who identify as conservative. The one diversity quota box that is always left unticked is the only one that really matters: diversity of opinion. For an academic article to be published, it must withstand the scrutiny of peer review. If the particular field of study is dominated by Left-wingers, it is easy to see how dissenting voices can be weeded out before publication.

Peer review is held up as sacrosanct by the academic community, despite it being a highly subjective process that is prone to confirmation bias and corruption. If there is a negative study that contradicts the postmodernist orthodoxy, you can bet it will not reach publication. After all, why would a journal seek to publish an article that serves to undermine its integrity? It is my view that the current peer review system in the social sciences should be vigorously restructured, or done away with completely.

With the unprecedented outbreak of Covid-19, the way we engage with academic research could be about to change completely. The urgent need for medical research in response to the pandemic has fuelled the demand for a different form of publishing, favouring open science on online forums called preprint servers. This is where academics and those outside the scientific field are able to engage with scientific literature that would normally be concealed behind a paywall. The conventional, bureaucratic model of peer review is incapable of coping in times of crisis as the usual form of publishing can take months or even years.

Its a great way to get preliminary results out and shared with the wider community, which can encourage collaboration and speed up the science, says Russ Altman, Professor of Bioengineering and former chairman of the Bioengineering Department at Stanford University. Of course, the negative is that its not peer reviewed, so people have to remember that what theyre reading might actually be slightly or totally wrong. But rather than creating a hazard, the introduction of open science has proved to be a great opportunity. A great benefit of open science is that it allows other researchers to comment and scrutinise works on online forums, increasing transparency. The general public can to tune in to cutting-edge scientific debate unfolding in real time which would normally not be accessible. Using traditional methods, this research might never reach publication, even if it is deemed to be correct.

After this pandemic has subsided, it remains to be seen whether scientific research will revert to the traditional methods of publication. But preprint servers have proved to be a net success in times of crisis. This open method of publication has the potential to be a game-changer if applied the same way in the social sciences. Ideas will become more accessible and can be challenged by not just a small number of academics, but the wider community. Peer review, in its current form, is a sacred cow that needs slaughtering.

Technically, we can recreate anyone online given enough data, said Faheem Hussain, a clinical assistant professor at Arizona State Universitys School for the Future of Innovation in Society. That opens up a Pandoras box of ethical implications.

Most services only allow people to sign up to their own digital afterlife while they are still alive.But the lack of regulation on the issue leaves the door open for others with access to the data of the deceased to bring them back to life in virtual form raising concerns about privacy and consent, data experts say.

In most countries, the data of the deceased is not protected, said Edina Harbinja, a senior lecturer in media and privacy law at Birminghams Aston University.So, nothing in law would prevent the creation of an avatar or android that would resemble the dead.

That could happen without the consent of the deceased, and the data used could infringe on other peoples privacy if it includes, for example, conversations the person had with friends and others.

From virtual reality (VR) to artificial intelligence (AI), advances in technology have spurred a series of initiatives offering different shades of virtual immortality in recent years.

In February, a South Korean broadcaster aired a tearful reunion between a mother and her deceased 7-year-old daughter who was recreated through VR as a digital avatar modeled on a child actor using photos and memories from her mother.

Other companies have been looking at social media as a source of information to create chatbots that could impersonate us after we are gone.

ETER9, a social network set up by Portuguese developer Henrique Jorge, pairs each user with an AI counterpart that learns to copy their online behaviour and can post comments and content on their behalf even after they are dead.

When a user decides to keep [their] counterpart active for eternity, [they] will have the extension of [them] alive forever, Jorge told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in e-mailed comments.Some years from now, your great-grandchildren will be able to talk with you even if they didnt have the chance to know you in person.

US-based Eternime offers a similar service, while Replika, a company in California, creates digital alter egos that users can talk to when in need of a confidant or companion.

Other start-ups such as SafeBeyond and GoneNotGone allow people to record videos and messages that will be dispatched to their loved ones after death, like letters from the grave marking birthdays or other life events.

Many questions, few answers

While some people might find comfort in the idea of living on digitally after they die, data experts warn that holes in data protection laws make it possible to virtually resurrect someone without their permission.

Wills can provide some guidelines if they contain directions on how to dispose of the deceaseds digital assets, but in some countries there is no guarantee these will be honoured, said Harbinja.

In Britain, for example, decisions around what to do with data is seen as personal wishes akin to preferring cremation rather than burial that can be overridden by executors and heirs and are not enforceable in court, she noted.

Denman’s racing immortality leaves mere passing firmly in the shade – Racing Post

Death shall have no dominion. How could it, when Denman had gained racing immortality long ago? Death takes a moment and is gone, but a life so well lived is everlasting.

The final kindness of the needle, gently and mournfully wielded, ushered Denman from his quiet field into the Elysian Field where all the horses go, the great and the good and the only ordinary.

Now, just out of our earshot, a strong, steady voice is announcing his arrival, and from the depths of the long, sweet grass Kauto Star has pricked up his ears and is walking quickly towards his old neighbour, old rival, old friend.

Denman's gone. No more will he lift his head as pheasants rise from the hedgerows with a clatter of wings, no more will he carefully present his backside to those seeking an audience, his silent, eloquent method of deterring conversation.

But what a treasury he leaves us. Death takes life but it cannot subtract from it, can't diminish that which came before. Denman's legacy is inviolable.

We know about the Cheltenham Gold Cup, the two Hennessys, the RSA Chase, the Lexus, the Racing Post Rating of 184, all the enduring excelsior of a career that never failed to excite.

What the bare statistics cannot convey, though, and what will form the main strand of a million reminiscences, is the way Denman went about his work. Some horses glide across the turf, others plod sturdily over it, but Denman hammered it into submission. At his great and glorious peak, he was an elemental force like no other.

He was a big horse, a throwback to a half-forgotten age of steeplechasing when giants strode the earth. We called him The Tank, in tribute to his size, but also to his relentlessness. He was the irresistible force, and woe betide any immovable object that lay in his way. Sometimes it was a rival, sometimes a long-established record, sometimes it was simply the bulwarks of belief that were turned to matchwood by his might.

His victory in the Gold Cup was a good example. Not only did he steal the crown from Kauto Star, he wrenched it away with barely credible brute force, alloyed with a rough-edged elegance and economy of effort.

To watch him come barrelling down the Cheltenham hill, turning for home full of running, is to witness the perfect exposition of equine power. He would have run through a brick wall that day and not turned a hair.

Together with his stablemate he helped change the aspect of his sport. Denman and Kauto Star were like United and City, like Federer and Nadal, like Coe and Ovett, opposing styles, opposite poles of brilliance.

Between them they transcended the mere technicalities of their sport, seemingly spurred each other to greater heights, victory for one more sweet and more meaningful when gained at the expense of the other.

Ostensibly, you were implacably either for Denman or for Kauto Star, but that did not preclude a warm and genuine appreciation of the other's talents, nor the unavailing arguments about who was the better.

Perhaps it was in his two Hennessy wins that we truly saw the greatest of Denman, though. They were similar in execution he mercilessly crushed the opposition but very different in context.

His first victory, in 2007, was peak Denman, the mighty athlete in his pomp. He was still unbeaten over fences, his limits unknown, and he carried his 11st 12lb burden as a weightlifter might carry a small child on his shoulders. We thrilled to him, struck by all sorts of awe.

Two years later, it was a different Denman. He had been made to seem mortal, a shell of his former self, laid low by his heart problems, his proud record in tatters, his crown lost for good. On his previous start, he had fallen for the first time. Now his 11st 12lb looked like a millstone around the neck of a war-wearied veteran.

Yet his spirit remained intact. He summoned up 'old Denman' for the final time, put his shoulder to the wheel, wore his battered old heart on his sleeve, and although it looked like very hard work he didn't shrink from the task until it was done.

It would be his last victory, his last hurrah, and as he returned to his adoring public there were not a few of them with tears rolling down their cheeks.

Now those tears are falling again, now that great heart is stilled. Denman is no more. One more long, luxurious summer at grass would have been a blessing, but it was time to go.

But as long as horses race, whenever the dust is blown in clouds from ancient record books, wherever men and women come together to talk about their champions, Denman will be brought bewitchingly to life.

Years hence, when younger faces light up at the exploits of the next great star (for there is always a next great star), old heads will nod and then these words will follow: "Ah, but you never saw Denman, did you."

And the stories will be told again.Denman will never die, you see; in this way he will live forever.

What We Do in the Shadows is a vampire comedy about being stuck at home – The Verge

Theres something soothing about watching a bunch of vampires be absolute morons on television every week. Theyre undead, capable of incredible feats, dark magic, and, in most cases, have been alive for hundreds of years. They should possess at least a little more finesse than Michael Scott. And yet, the bloodsucking clowns of What We Do in the Shadows are so very bad at being immortal monsters, which means they are excellent at comedy.

FXs TV series, based on the Taika Waititi film of the same name, returned for a second season just as funny as ever. Like the movie, the show follows a trio of vampires this time, they live on Staten Island as opposed to the New Zealand of the films living together in a derelict old manor. Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Laszlo (Matt Berry), and Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) are hundreds of years old and also total dorks. Theyre bad at most things they do, but as long as they dont accidentally stumble into sunlight or fall on a wooden stake, theyll get over it. (It turns out, vampirism is a very potent form of failing upward.)

While this is extremely similar to the movie its based on, the TV version of What We Do in the Shadows fleshes out its mockumentary antics with a few additions to the formula: namely, a familiar, Guillermo (Harvey Guilln) who serves them in hopes of becoming a vampire, and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch), an energy vampire who looks normal but feeds off the ambient misery of everyone around him.

Colin and Guillermo are the reason What We Do in the Shadows works as a show, two regular-looking dudes juxtaposed against their goth reality show roommates that also have their own normcore sociopathic tendencies. Colin, in particular, gives the show a feeling very similar to The Office. As an energy vampire, he feeds off everyones annoyance and goes out of his way to be obnoxiously corny and irritating. (One very good Colin bit involves him incessantly saying updog as if it were a joke no one had ever heard before.)

Like the best work of show creator Jemaine Clement (who co-wrote the film with Waititi), theres a lot of fun to be had with taking the iconography of the occult and supernatural and putting them in front of the mundanity of the mockumentary. What happens when theyre haunted by a very petty ghost? Or deal with animal control when it captures one of them in bat form? Or accidentally get a pet zombie?

Watching What We Do in the Shadows is oddly cathartic while social distancing. Maybe its because the vampires of the show are also isolated in a fashion, unable to see the sunlight and absolutely kooky as a result. Maybe, What We Do in the Shadows argues, immortality wouldnt make you cool or fearsome, but instead really freaking weird. In that way, its kind of like watching a reality show about patently awful people. Maybe you have your flaws, but hey: youre not that bad!

If youve spent any of the last month on Twitter, the corniest social network, you might have noticed a meme going around where people ask each other to pick their preferred quarantine house. Simply put, the tweets list groups of people, real or fictional, and asks which set you would like to shack up with while social distancing. Like all bad memes, theres very little logic to them other than asking people to argue for the posters amusement, and this makes them consistently unfunny at least until the lists get so baffling that the meme loops around to becoming funny again.

Its a bad meme, but its one that feels appropriate for understanding why What We Do in the Shadows is so fun to watch. Like in this silly Twitter exercise, no one in their right mind would probably want to share a home with a bunch of vampires. But after watching What We Do in the Shadows, why not? It could be fun. I wouldnt recommend vampirism as a quarantine hobby, but being weirder? Sure. We could stand to be a little weirder.

The name Apocalypse should strike fear into heroes, both mutant and human alike. En Sabah Nur has even been known to face down the gods themselves. His notoriety and abilities areboth biological and technological. The despotic shepherd of evolution has displayed extraordinary power on countless occasions, befitting of his ominous and intimidating title. Unlike other evolutionary fanatics like The High Evolutionary, Apocalypse is far more hands-on-- he's more than happy to force his view of how life should progress with an iron fist.

With En Sabah Nur, it all comes down to his belief in the "Survival of the Fittest" mindset. If something is weak, it does not deserve to live to see the strong futurehe envisions. Given his own powers, abilities and natural acumen for all sorts of things, he certainly practices what he preaches. So, what exactly is it about Apocalypse that makes his genetic makeup so unique?Here's a look at his anatomy, which may glean some information about the villain's staying power..

One of the technologies he is seen using the most is the armor he was given by the Celestials. This gave Apocalypse an amazing power spike, making him strong enough to go toe-to-toe with gods. In one such battle, Apocalypse ran afoul of a young, pre-Mjolnir Thor. With one headbutt, he forced the young god into retreatand Thor said he could feel that the blow almost broke his neck.

Even before the Celestials appointed En Sabah Nur as their evolutionary agent, Apocalypse was immortal. One of the longest living mutants, Apocalypse benefits from a seemingly infinite lifespan via his mutations. This is likely a largecomponent of his "Survival of the Fittest" school of thought, as he presumes he will live through everything that comes to pass. It is important to note, however, that his immortality does not mean he is invulnerable.

Luckily for Apocalypse, his appointment as the agent of evolutionary change on the Celestials' behalf has afforded him a way to bolster his immortality. Should the villain take a lot of damage, his augmented body can enter a stasis that allows him to heal from injuries that may have otherwise stayed with him. This ability coupled with his natural healing factor makes sure he can return at full power whenever he is defeated.

Apocalypse has had an interesting relationship with the techno-organic virus over his existence. Most infamously, he infected Cable with the virus, which became a part of the character's lifelong struggle and the diminishing of his power. He has also instructed his underlings to utilize the virus in other ways, like taking over spaceships and other technology. When Apocalypse made Angel into Archangel, his metal wings were made from similar techno-organic means.

On one occasion, Apocalypse's understanding of the virus allowed him to step in and help cure Professor Xavier of the affliction. While uncharacteristic of the villain, both he and the X-Men were in conflict with Stryfe at the time, so it is likely he saw value in having Xavier live. The final and most intriguing relationship En Sabah Nur has with the techno-organic virus is that it appears to revitalize him. On the rare occasion Apocalypse is killed, the virus appears to bring him back to life.

Apocalypse isvery hard to harm. His body is resistant to a plethora of damage types and his endurance is among the most formidable in the entire Marvel Universe. While there are certainly ways to defeat Apocalypse, simple brute force rarely works. His aforementioned healing factor, Celestial augmentations and his molecular makeup work in tandem to make him nigh-impervious.

Apocalypse isresistant to some of the most powerful energy sources in the Marvel Universe, including a shout from Black Bolt. Black Boltis able to crack planets in two with his sonic capabilities -- so knowing Apocalypse has endured one of his attacks is quite impressive. En Sabah Nur also holds the power to take in energy and absorb it to bolster his defensive capabilities, similar to other mutants like Bishop.

Proving he is indeed the fittest for survival, Apocalypse is able to completely control his molecular structure. Using this power, he is able to grow to large heights, shrink his form, fashion his limbs into weapons and even constrict his foes with his body, similar tohow Mr. Fantastic often fights. This manipulation also affords him incredible defensive abilities, reinforcing body parts with extra mass if needed or contorting in unusual ways to dodge attacks.

In addition tousing his molecular structure manipulation for combat, Apocalypse can perform other extraordinary tasks like morphing himself into machinery -- most notably, Celestial technology. This allows him to merge with it and understand it better. When coupled with his Celestial technology, Apocalypse can also manipulate his body to grant himself additional superpowers or employ deceptive, shape-shifting tactics to infiltrate and blend into crowds.

On the 50th anniversary of the planet's big day, the world is on lockdown and there will be neither parties nor parades in Earth's honor. And you know what? Mother Nature is doing a happy dance nonetheless. A pandemic is obviously devastating for humans, but pollution has plummeted and wildlife is enjoying the freedom to roam in places long off limits. Mother Nature's like, "this is the best Earth Day ever."

But just because we can't got out and sing our praises for the planet doesn't mean we shouldn't celebrate at home. Five talking points from Westworld S3E06 – Buzz.ie

The latest episode of Westworld was explosive and it sets things up well for the penultimate episode of season three.

Before you read on, be warned this post is full of spoilers if you're not up to date with Westworld.

'Decoherence' followed several of our main characters and it did so well.

The Man In White

Woah!

Anyone who thought William was finished was very wrong.

The cruel technological therapy he was put through was another example of the grim future that Dolores is trying to plunge into anarchy.

The most striking scene saw him sit down for 'group therapy' with three past versions of himself, and his father-in-law James Delos.

He learns from painful memories from his past, namely that he can't blame his abusive childhood for the monster he became.

His solution? To brutally bludgeon the past versions of himself to death of course.

This brutal interlude is interrupted by Stubbs and Bernard.

We previously thought it was team Dolores vs team Serac but we may now have a third major grouping in play, led by the 'Man In White'.

Maeve 2.0

Maeve tellsEngerraundSerac she wants what Dolores has an he appears to grant her that wish by reincarnated her with some added ruthlessness.

This is demonstrated when she returns to the World War Two simulation and single-handedly takes down a horde of Nazi soldiers.

She also gets the allies she asked for but is powerless as Dolores Charlotte Hale, puts an end to her favourite one, Hector.

The result of this is a very angry Maeve.

Before that she had appeared to find some common ground with the consciousness of Dolores that Serac introduced her to.

That goodwill is gone now and we're looking forward to seeing her up against Dolores in the real world.

A brilliant showing from Tessa Thompson

Tessa Thompson has been brilliant throughout Westworld but she's shined in season three.

She's playing a character who is pretending to be someone else, while the imposer grapples with the real Charlotte Hale's emotions, and she pulls this off expertly.

Her action packed sequence in this episode made for great viewing as Hale successfully retrieved the host data, which could be crucial as Serac had all of the host bodies destroyed.

She also stole the corrupted Dolores pearl and destroyed Hector's pearl.

It's been very interesting to see Hale fighting with the 'inner Charlotte' and it proves to be her undoing as Serac realises something is up as the 'real Hale' wouldn't have bothered to check up on her son.

Just when it appears she's succeeded in her mission and rescued her family....BOOM!

Will Charlotte survive?

Hale was already becoming disillusioned with the original Dolores as she challenged her on Martin Connells' death.

Her charred body somehow made it out of the burning car and stood up.

If she is to survive, there are plenty of questions? Will the death of Charlotte's family drive her crazy? Will she still trust Dolores? And will she be given a new skin or walk around like a terrifying corpse.

We're betting on the latter.

Is William human, host, or both?

Thompson's wasn't the only outstanding performance in episode six.

Ed Harris' William became even more fascinating as we got an insight into his troubled life.

Whether he's fully human has been questioned before and we basically got confirmation that there's at least some host in him as his blood test revealed an 'unknown protein'.

Could William have used some of the knowledge from the experiments on James Delos to enhance his own life or look for immortality? Delos' appearance could hint at that and it will certainly make things very interesting if William is now part host.

A trainer and I stood in the centre of his yard at the start of last month gazing at a horse as she walked by, blissfully unaware, or perhaps unappreciative, of the potential cataclysm that was coming racing's way.

We stared appreciatively at this horse, a striking unraced two-year-old filly, and mused about what may lay ahead for her. "You can just imagine her charging up the hill at the July course", or words to that effect, were offered enthusiastically by the trainer. He was right, I could imagine it.

And that's what two-year-olds, like no other type of horse that is raced, offer; excitement and anticipation, disappointment and befuddlement, but the chance to dream and ponder "what if".

So, that is what I look forward to most when racing finally returns, the chance to see two-year-olds in action and the boundless possibilities almost each and every race for such horses presents through the year.

That is the beauty with juveniles. Yes, you are most likely to see a very talented horse running at the July course in the summer or at Newbury or York, the prize-money, prestige, programmes and racing surfaces at tracks such as these often make them the chosen places for the regally-bred and expensively-bought youngsters.

However, brilliance is not the preserved of these courses. Take, for example, a seemingly run-of-the-mill novice contest staged on a Friday evening at Wolverhampton in May last year.

That race was won by none other than Pinatubo, who didn't even start favourite but would end the year unbeaten and ranked among the best juveniles we have ever seen in Europe. Who could have predicted such a sequence of events that morning?

The excitement that fizzes around racecourses before the appearance of a well-touted two-year-old, particularly an unraced one, is a delight.

I have experienced this at the aforementioned July course more than any other racecourse. That tangible anticipation about what may happen was present before Motivator, winner of the following year's Derby, scored for the first time there, and it was the same when Rainbow View blew away her opposition on debut as well (she really was a wonderfully talented juvenile).

However, it was never more fevered than before an unraced Galileo colt in the Juddmonte silks stepped on to the racecourse for the first time on a Friday evening when rain lashed down from the sky in torrents.

Of course, you don't need me to tell you the horse in question was Frankel, starting out on his road to immortality. A two-year-old with countless potential whose trainer, the late Sir Henry Cecil, after the race stood sheltering from the rain, head characteristically tilted to one side as he absorbed what he had seen, pondering what he might do nextas those gathered around him waitedfor his customary "what do you think?".

From those exciting debuts, to the stakes races, nursery debutants and sales contests, where horses bought from relative peanuts can provide those who have invested their hopes and dreams with returns they couldscarcely have imagined a matter of months before, two-year-old racing offers so much to look forward to.

So, I hope to be at the July course later this summer with the sun warming my shoulders, watching the filly I let my mind's eye picture thundering across the turf do her thing. Who knows where it may lead?

John Leyba named dean of the College of Science and Mathematics – News at UNG

Dr. John Leyba has been named the new dean of the College of Science & Mathematics at the University of North Georgia (UNG).

Leyba has served as interim dean for the past year and had been associate dean of the College of Science and Mathematics at UNG since 2018. Before that, Leyba was the head of the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry. He was hired for the job in August 2014 after working for Newman University in Wichita, Kansas, for 12 years and subcontractors for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for more than 11 years.

"During my time as interim, it was surreal. But I got a good feel for the job and I enjoyed doing it," the father of eight children said. "So when UNG posted the job, it hit home that I had to apply."

After a national search, Leyba was hired and will become official on May 1.

"We felt it was important to conduct a national search to identify the next dean for the College of Science & Math," said Dr. Chaudron Gille, provost and senior vice president of Academic Affairs. "Dr. Leyba brings a wealth of experience in industry as well as years of academic leadership to the position.He was clearly the most qualified candidate and was unanimously endorsed by the committee."

Leyba earned his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Northeast Missouri State University, now called Truman State University, in 1986. Four years later, he received his doctoral degree in nuclear chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley.

As the new dean, Leyba has set his sights on completing current goals and establishing new ones.

Some of the current projects Leyba established were the electronic newsletter called "Momentum" and the College of Science & Mathematics Facebook and Instagram pages. The newsletter is sent to stakeholders and supporters to showcase the college's efforts. The two social media platforms are used to inform students and alumni about the college's activities.

"Scientists are not the best communicators," Leyba said. "We need to blow our own horn about what we are doing and accomplishing here."

Leyba also anticipates the completion of the new North Georgia Astronomical Observatory near UNG's Dahlonega Campus as well as the creation of a small observatory on the Gainesville Campus. He is also anticipating the completion of the new greenhouse in Gainesville. Both the North Georgia Astronomical Observatory and Gainesville greenhouse were part of the College of Science & Mathematics' strategic plan that Leyba helped author and looks forward to implementing.

"The strategic plan got everyone on the same page with a common set of goals," he said. "An important part was the inclusivity of all campuses. It had an important milestone for each campus. No campus is more important than another. As a team we will move forward and achieve those goals."

To do that, Leyba plans to continue a tradition he learned from a boss in the private sector. Early in his career, Leyba worked for the DOE's Savannah River Site in Aiken, South Carolina, and the Rocky Flats Site in Colorado.

"Every Friday, my first boss would walk the halls. He'd come into your office and talk to you about anything," Leyba said. "That's what I would like to do. I want to show up on any campus unannounced and walk the halls."

There he wants to acquaint himself with all of the faculty and staff and learn their personalities, interests and ambitions. He also wants to determine the needs of each campus.

"Each one has its own strengths and challenges. They can tailor their courses to the campus and students' needs," he said. "As a manager, I want to enable people to do their jobs better."

Turning On the ‘Off Switch’ in Cancer Cells – Michigan Medicine

We used cryo-electron microscopy to obtain three-dimensional images of our tool-molecule, DT-061, bound to PP2A, says study co-senior author Derek Taylor, Ph.D., an associate professor of pharmacology and biochemistry at Case Western Reserve University and member of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center. This allowed us to see for the first time precisely how different parts of the protein were brought together and stabilized by the compound. We can now use that information to start developing compounds that could achieve the desired profile, specificity and potency to potentially translate to the clinic.

The researchers propose calling this class of molecules SMAPs for small molecule activators of PP2A.

Along with cancer, PP2A is also dysregulated in a number of other diseases including cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. And the researchers are optimistic the findings could also open opportunities to develop new medicines against diseases like heart failure and Alzheimers as well.

The research required a marriage of scientific disciplines and areas of expertise, notes co-senior author Goutham Narla, M.D., Ph.D., chief of the division of genetic medicine in the department of internal medicine at the U-M Medical School.

Its an illustration of how collaboration and team science can solve some of the questions like this that scientists have been asking for many years, Narla says. Solving the structure without the biological knowledge of how best to apply it against cancer, would only be half of the story. And if we were just activating PP2A, killing cancer cells and slowing the growth of cancer without the structural data that would be a really nice half-story as well. But working together, we now have a story about being able to drug this previously undruggable tumor suppressor.

The study was led by first authors Daniel Leonard, an M.D. and Ph.D. student and member of Narlas lab when the research was at Case Western Reserve and the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, and research scientist Wei Huang, Ph.D., of the Taylor lab.

There has been a lot of activity and excitement in recent years around the development of kinase inhibitors small molecule compounds that go after the protein kinases whose dysfunction is involved in the explosive growth and proliferation of cancer cells. That is, turning off cancers on switch, Leonard explains.

The new research attacks cancer from the opposite side of the equation, turning on cancers off switch by stabilizing protein phosphatases whose malfunction removes a key brake on cancer growth.

In the paper, the researchers speculate how a combination of both approaches simultaneously might offer an even more powerful one-two punch potentially helping to overcome cancers ability to evolve to thwart a singular approach.

The binding pocket we identified provides a launch pad for optimizing the next generation of SMAPs toward use in the clinic in cancer, and potentially other diseases, Huang adds.

The research was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health (R01 CA240993, R01 GM133841, R01 CA181654, F30 TRN216393, T32 GM007250), and an American Heart Association Postdoctoral Fellowship (17POST33650070).

DT-061 was developed at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, which has filed for patent protection on the tool compound. Narla, Ogris and Taylor have ownership interest in RAPPTA Therapeutics, which has licensed the cryo-EM coordinates for the clinical and commercial development of novel series of small molecule PP2A activators from the University of Michigan and Case Western Reserve; the authors and institutions stand to benefit financially. The Medical University of Vienna has filed a patent on a monoclonal antibody used in the study.

Class of 2020 petitions for on-campus commencement ceremony – University at Buffalo The Spectrum

Matthew Helou dreamed of becoming the first person in his family to walk across a college graduation stage.

Helou, a senior biochemistry major, will graduate in May. But he worries that wont involve the traditional commencement ceremony hed always imagined.

On April 6, UB President Satish Tripathi emailed graduating students and said UB officials were planning online commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2020 and that administrators were optimistic about hosting an on-campus celebration later in the year. Students like Helou, however, believe that a celebration would not offer the same experience as a commencement. Minutes after Tripathi sent the email, Helou published a petition on Change.org requesting that Tripathi and other administrators postpone the Class of 2020s ceremony and reconsider the virtual commencement.

Helous petition amassed more than 1,000 signatures within a day. Now it has nearly 3,500.

Helou says hes concerned the emails careful choice of words does not guarantee any sort of true commencement experience for UBs May graduates.

Until we are further informed by the administration what this on-campus celebration is, we stand by this statement, Helou wrote in an April 10 petition update.

We, the University at Buffalos Class of 2020, deserve the traditional, true and in-person commencement ceremonies that hundreds of thousands of UB graduates have had the privilege of participating in since 1846, Helou said.

Many signatures came from seniors disappointed that UB began planning an alternative commencement ceremony without any consultation with the graduating student body, Helou said.

Helou and over 20 other graduating students emailed UBs commencement coordinators, UB Provost A. Scott Weber and Tripathi on April 10 about the petition in hopes that they would take their requests into consideration.

Tripathi emailed Helou and other petitioners on April 11 and said that UB would remain committed to its decision to plan virtual ceremonies for the Class of 2020 and an on-campus celebration at a later date. The same statement was also published on UBs COVID-19 website.

Schools like the University Honors College and College of Arts and Sciences plan to use MarchingOrder to add a personal touch to virtual ceremonies. With MarchingOrder, graduates can input their photos, majors and personal messages onto a virtual slide.

Helou says he understands the public-health dangers the pandemic poses and the importance of the universitys efforts to comply with social distancing guidelines. But, he says, his family already paid for his grandmothers flight from Paris to Buffalo for the original ceremony, and Helou insists a virtual commencement experience would be less valuable than in-person commencement.

I can see the reason for an option like this, but strongly disagree with making virtual commencement the outcome for all students, Helou said. We should have some sort of say in this decision. It is very important to the Class of 2020.

Yousouf Amolegbe, Student Association president and a senior aerospace engineering student, signed and promoted the petition because he said he believes UBs decision disregarded student input.

It only goes to show the level of disregard [the decision has] for the efforts, investments and sacrifices the graduating Class of 2020 has made thus to this point, Amolegbe said. We will not stand for it and are willing to go [to] any extent to make sure the university recognizes our concerns.

Amolegbe also said he believes UBs decision goes against the standard set by other institutions across New York State.

There is no reason to hold [commencement] virtually when no other SUNY campus has chosen to take this direction yet, and NYU and Syracuse have literally promised their graduating classes [in-person ceremonies] this year, Amolegbe said

Emma Patterson, a senior communication major, signed the petition and said she was disappointed by UBs decision to host a virtual commencement ceremony against the wishes of the majority of this years graduating class.

The petition was a way to represent a majority of the students and the family members of graduates, and show that we deserve an in-person commencement, Patterson said.

Helou is hopeful that the majority will be enough to sway administrators to host an in-person commencement ceremony for the Class of 2020 when public health regulations become less stringent and Covid-19 infection rates decline.

As we are eclipsing 2,000 signatures in just under two days, I remain hopeful. I am hopeful that Dr. Tripathi will hear about this, Helou said. Ultimately, the Class of 2020 deserves a true in-person commencement and alternative options to ensure that people who cannot make it to Buffalo for a postponed commencement get an experience that they will remember and cherish forever.
