Long maligned as job-stealers and aspiring overlords, robots are being increasingly relied on as fast, efficient, contagion-proof champions in the war against the deadly coronavirus.

One team of robots temporarily cared for patients in a makeshift hospital in Wuhan, the Chinese city where the COVID-19 outbreak began.

Meals were served, temperatures taken and communications handled by machines, one of them named Cloud Ginger by its maker CloudMinds, which has operations in Beijing and California.

It provided useful information, conversational engagement, entertainment with dancing, and even led patients through stretching exercises, CloudMinds president Karl Zhao said of the humanoid robot.

The smart field hospital was completely run by robots.

A small medical team remotely controlled the field hospital robots. Patients wore wristbands that gathered blood pressure and other vital data.

The smart clinic only handled patients for a few days, but it foreshadowed a future in which robots tend to patients with contagious diseases while health care workers manage from safe distances.

Checkup and check out

Patients in hospitals in Thailand, Israel and elsewhere meet with robots for consultations done by doctors via video conference. Some consultation robots even tend to the classic checkup task of listening to patients lungs as they breathe.

Alexandra Hospital in Singapore will use a robot called BeamPro to deliver medicine and meals to patients diagnosed with COVID-19 or those suspected to be infected with the virus in its isolation wards.

Doctors and nurses can control the robot by using a computer from outside the room, and can hold conversations with the patient via the screen and camera.

The robot reduces the number of touch points with patients who are isolated, thereby reducing risk for healthcare workers, the hospitals health innovation director Alexander Yip told local news channel CNA.

Robotic machines can also be sent to scan for the presence of the virus, such as when the Diamond Princess cruise ship cabins were checked for safety weeks after infected passengers were evacuated, according to the US Centers for Disease Control.

Additionally, hospitals are turning to robots to tirelessly rid room, halls and door handles of viruses and bacteria.

US firm Xenex has seen a surge in demand for its robots that disinfect rooms, according to director of media relations Melinda Hart.

Xenexs LightStrike robots have been used in more than 500 healthcare facilities, with the number of deployed bots rising due to the pandemic, Hart said.

We are getting requests from around the world, Hart said.

In addition to hospitals, were being contacted by urgent care centers, hotels, government agencies and pharmaceutical companies to disinfect rooms.

Shark Robotics in France began testing a decontamination unit about a month ago and has already started getting orders, according to co-founder Cyril Kabbara.

Worth the price?

The coronavirus pandemic has caused robotics innovation to accelerate, according to Lesley Rohrbaugh, the director of research for the US Consumer Technology Association.

We are in a time of need for some of this technology, so it seems like benefits outweigh costs, Rohrbaugh said.

Artificial intelligence, sensors and other capabilities built into robots can push up prices, as can the need to bolster high-speed internet connections on which machines often rely, according to Rohrbaugh.

Innovations on the horizon include using drones equipped with sensors and cameras to scan crowds for signs of people showing symptoms of coronavirus infection.

A team at the University of South Australia is working on just that, in collaboration with Canadian drone maker Draganfly.

The use will be to identify the possible presence of the virus by observing humans, said university professor Javaan Singh Chahl.

It might form part of an early warning system or to establish statistically how many people are afflicted in a population.

His team is working on computer algorithms that can spot sneezing or coughing, say in an airport terminal, and remotely measure peoples pulses and temperatures.

The Australian team also concludes that resveratrol consumption amongst postmenopausal women can also contribute to enhanced cognitive and cerebrovascular functions.

Our observed improvement in overall cognitive performance with resveratrol could potentially reverse cognitive ageing by up to 10 years says Dr Rachel Wong, a dementia research fellow with the National Health and Medical Research Council and the Australian Research Council (NHMRC-ARC).

We observed an improvement in overall cognitive performance which appeared to be due to improvements in processing speed and cognitive flexibility, which are critical to supporting executive function in the aging population.

Since 1990, the number of people globally living with dementia has more than doubled. In 2016, dementia mortality rates in women were almost twice that of men.

This may be partly attributable to the abrupt decline of oestrogen at menopause and the associated loss of its protective effects on cardiovascular and neural functions.

Resveratrol, found in grapes, berries and nuts, has been shown to improve endothelial vasodilator function in humans and improvements to verbal memory in older adults after six months of 200 mg of supplementation per day compared to placebo.

Further research points to doses of 250 milligrams (mg) and 500mg of resveratrol as contributing to increases of resting cerebral blood flow (CBF) in younger adults, although cognitive function was not affected.

Another study found that 75mg resveratrol, the lowest dose tested, was the most efficacious dose to acutely elicit global cerebral vasodilatation and improve performance of a sustained attention task in type 2 diabetes patients.

Along with colleagues from the University of South Australia, Dr Wong began randomising 129 volunteers to consume either two capsules containing 75mg of Evolvas Veri-te resveratrol ingredient daily or a matching placebo supplement for 12 months, followed by the alternate treatment for a further 12 months.

Results of the RESHAW (Resveratrol Supporting Healthy Aging in Women) clinical study found that compared to placebo, resveratrol improved overall cognitive performance, whilst weakening the decline in cerebrovascular responsiveness (CVR) to cognitive stimuli. The latter effect was associated with reduction of fasting blood glucose.

The evidence in this first report confirms our previous observations in both men and women that a regular low dose of resveratrol can sustain cerebrovascular function, which has helped to preserve cognitive function, particularly in the more elderly women, says Peter Howe, emeritus professor at the University of Newcastles Clinical Nutrition Research Centre.

Most importantly, it shows that these benefits are not short-lived but can be sustained with ongoing supplementation for at least 12 months.

The team, which also includes Dr Jay Jay Thaung Zaw, also from Australias University of Newcastle, think the results may be partly overseen by improvements to endothelium-dependent vasodilator function, which modulates CBF during times of demand.

We found improved resting blood flow velocities (BFV), stiffness in the cerebral vessels or pulsatility index (PI) and weakening of decline in neurovascular coupling following resveratrol supplementation, the paper discusses.

Allowing for normal ageing processes, cognitive decline and ultimately, dementia are linked to accelerated decline in resting CBF and CVR due to a decreased delivery of oxygen and nutrients in vulnerable brain regions such as the hippocampus.

Cerebral artery stiffness, marked by increased PI, is also associated with cognitive impairment and predicts the progression from mild cognitive impairment to dementia.

The study concludes that taking this evidence into account, the team think the improvements in resting BFV and PI with resveratrol highlights the ability of regular resveratrol supplementation to sustain cerebrovascular function, which may, in turn, preserve cognitive function in elderly women.

Resveratrol supports cognitive health in aging populations, says groundbreaking RESHAW study – Nutritional Outlook

Evolva (Reinach, Switzerland) has announced the first published findings1 from the Resveratrol Supporting Healthy Aging in Women (RESHAW) clinical study, conducted by the University of Newcastle in Australia and funded by the countrys National Health and Medical Research Council. This two-year clinical trial is the largest and longest-running trial of its kind, investigating the impact of Evolvas branded Veri-te resveratrol on cognitive performance. Interim results were announced at SupplySide West 2019.

In the double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover design, 125 post-menopausal women were assigned to either receive 75 mg of resveratrol or placebo twice daily for 12 months, then switched interventions for the next 12 months. Results showed performance on Pattern Comparison Speed tests improved in the resveratrol group, compared to placebo, which the researchers believe is due to the significant improvements in two cognitive domains, processing speed and cognitive flexibility. Both of these domains are part of executive function, requiring speed, perceptual reasoning, and accuracy to accomplish tasks. Executive function declines with age, with processing speed and cognitive flexibility being among the first cognitive changes reported in healthy older adults.

The researchers hypothesize that the cognitive improvements may be due, in part, to sustained improvement of endothelium-dependent vasodilator function, which modulates cerebral blood flow during times of demand. Subjects taking resveratrol saw significant improvements in basal blood flow velocities (systolic, mean, and diastolic), and pulsatility index, which is a measure of the stiffness in cerebral vessels, compared to placebo. Neurovascular coupling capacity also saw improvement, especially in response to tests of cognitive flexibility. This is important because cognitive decline and ultimately dementia are linked to accelerated decline in resting cerebral blood flow and cerebrovascular function due to decreased delivery of oxygen and nutrients to vulnerable parts of the brain such as the hippocampus.

This momentous publication from the team at the University of Newcastle highlights the benefits that Veri-te resveratrol can have on brain health, making resveratrol an essential ingredient for postmenopausal women and healthy aging, said Clare Panchoo, vice president, Health Ingredients, Evolva, in a press release. University of Newcastle researchers have already established a link between menstrual migraines and blood vessel function in the brain. Now they are recruiting for a world-first clinical trial into whether "resveratrol" - a naturally occurring substance found in the skin of grapes - could alleviate the symptoms and frequency of these migraines. Registered pharmacist and PhD candidate Jemima Dzator said there had been previous studies where the nutritional supplement had been proven to help blood vessel function in the brain. But this trial would be a world-first look at whether it could also have an effect on women who suffer from hormone-related migraines each month. "There is not a lot of study surrounding menstrual migraine to begin with, even though migraines are very, very common, and affect more women than men," Ms Dzator said. "These migraines are very debilitating," Ms Dzator said. "It can put them out of work for days, it can affect the way they interact with their family and friends, their social life, and their emotional well being." They tended to occur at certain points of the menstrual cycle - usually like clockwork, and had been shown to be more recurrent, more painful, longer lasting and more resistant to current treatment compared to regular migraines. Ms Dzator said there was currently no approved treatment for menstrual migraine in Australia. I would say my number one recommendation is to set up a schedule, develop a routine for yourself. The more you can make your workout consistent the easier its gonna be for you and its definitely gonna be a challenge at first.

Its not all about the workout, its also about the food you put in your body. There are no specific diets, or special foods, that will directly boost your immune system. However, eating a balanced diet and getting regular exercise will increase your overall health, and give your body a better shot at defending against diseases and illnesses.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, good nutrition lowers peoples risk for many chronic diseases, including heart disease, stroke, some types of cancer, diabetes and osteoporosis. An overall healthy lifestyle must include good nutrition, regular physical activity, no smoking and stress management.

So what can you do to improve your immune system? Local certified nutrition and wellness consultant, Whitney George, fills us in. The number one thing that people can do first to improve the immune system response and function is to drop sugar from their diets.

Added sugars, refined carbohydrates, foods made out of flour, and even natural sources of sugars that are high glycemic like dried fruits, impair white blood cell function. Coinciding with the importance of sugar reduction for immune function is to increase non-starchy vegetables in the diet says George.

To maintain a balanced diet, George recommends eating 6-8 cups of non-starchy vegetables per day and 1/2-1 cup of low sugar fruits like berries, kiwi, and grapefruit.

It is from these plant foods that we get an abundance of phytonutrients like quercetin, rutin, luteolin, myricetin, resveratrol, and apigenin, which have immune strengthening properties says George.

Food sources of zinc (oysters, clams, shrimp, pumpkin seeds, liver) and vitamin C (red bell peppers, broccoli, rose hips, citrus fruits) are also imperative to support the immune response and keep it balanced and not tipping into the cytokine storm (which is the mechanism for death in those suffering from COVID pneumonia). Balancing blood sugar is key.

George also recommends pairing your non-starchy vegetables with high quality protein sources that are sustainably sourced (pasture-raised, grass-fed, wild caught) and healthy fats like extra virgin olive oil, olives, avocado, coconut, coconut oil, nuts and seeds.

With everyone staying at home, take out is also a popular choice and a good way to support local businesses. So how can you eat out and still eat right? In general, when ordering from any restaurant, it is important to stick to the basics listed above says George.

Think about a plate that is 1/2 to 3/4s non-starchy veggies, paired with a protein source that is grilled or baked, not fried, and if you want to choose a starch, try to choose a whole grain like brown or wild rice or one that is not processed like a baked sweet potato.

Sudden resignation of ERC president stirs heated dispute over motives – Science Business

Mauro Ferrari resigned unexpectedly as president of the European Research Council, triggering a noisy public spat over why and how he left.

Ferrari, an Italian-American expert in nano-medicine, fired off an angry resignation memo provided first to the Financial Times castigating the European Commission for a largely uncoordinated cluster of initiatives. He said he pushed to have the ERC, which focuses on frontier research, launch a special funding round for COVID-19 research. As a result, he said, I have lost faith in the system itself and submitted his resignation on 7 April.

But that version of events was quickly disputed in Brussels. Christian Ehler, a German member of the European Parliament who leads research legislation, issued a late-night statement calling Ferraris actions a window-dressing public relations stand on the coronavirus crisis and it was a contradiction to the legal basis of the ERC.

Other sources said the agencys governing body, the 21-member Scientific Council, had decided days earlier to ask for Ferraris resignation. Among the issues was a belief that he was spending too much time on non-ERC, private activities.

The Commission issued a statement confirming Ferraris immediate resignation and noting that his contract as ERC president only gave him the legal powers of a special advisor to the Commission. Legally, it said, the Scientific Council defines the scientific funding strategy and methodologies of the ERC. It went on to thank him for the strong personal investment he made in the months leading up to his appointment 1 January.

When he took office on 1 January, Ferrari was allowed to continue some outside activities back in the US, where he had built his career in engineering, nanotechnology and medicine. Among these was a paid board position at a US biotech company, Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals. He also continued as an affiliate professor in pharmaceutical science at the University of Washington. But the arrangement was unusual for an agency like the ERC, and had already prompted some outside criticism. As European nations began entering COVID-19 lockdown last month, he was in the US, where his grown children work.

A Commission spokesman late on 7 April confirmed Ferraris resignation, but declined to elaborate. Ferrari couldnt be reached immediately for direct comment, but the Financial Times published his statement excoriating the ERC and the Commission.

In the statement, he said that he proposed that the ERC set up a special COVID-19 programme, because at a time like this, the very best scientists in the world should be provided with resources and opportunities to fight the pandemic. He said it was rejected unanimously by the Scientific Council without even considering what shape or form it may take. He added that he was later invited by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for my input on COVID-19, which created an internal political thunderstorm inside the Commission bureaucracy.

The ERC, by law, funds research proposed directly by scientists based on their own judgment of whats important; they get the money - 2.2 billion in all for 2020 if peer review panels organised by the agency agrees with them. Ferraris statement says he knew his idea for top-down COVID-19 grants ran counter to the agencys normal bottom-up practice, but it was justified by the emergency.

Agency officials declined to comment publicly, but the MEP, Ehler, issued a public defence of the ERC, pushing back at Ferrari.

Besides calling Ferraris COVID-19 plan window-dressing, Ehler said Ferrari was never really acquainting with the independent nature of the ERC. He continued: We are sorry that things have turned out this way for a brilliant researcher and entrepreneur like Mr. Ferrari. However, this should not serve as argument to accuse the ERC or the EU of not doing enough.

The ERC focuses on fundamental rather than applied research and numbers among its existing grantees virologists, epidemiologists and others who have been doing basic research for the agency, and have now joined applied COVID-research teams in the Commissions other programmes.

They include 48.5 million for emergency Horizon 2020 collaborative projects for vaccines, cures and tools; 45 million to its Innovative Medicines Initiative; 80 million in financial support for German vaccine maker Curevac; and up to 164 million in grants to small business with COVID-19 solutions to develop.

On taking office in January, Ferrari quickly unveiled ambitious plans for the ERC. In an interview with Science|Business in February, he spoke enthusiastically of the need for what he called super-disciplinary research, in which scientists break out of their normal disciplines and think across domains. He was also a strong advocate of researchers helping to get their discoveries commercialised and into widespread use something he did repeatedly in his own career.

Ferrari, now 60 years old, is credited as one of the founders of nanomedicine. In 2016, his research team made headlines with a new cancer treatment that uses nanoparticles loaded with a chemotherapeutic to target metastatic cells directly, thereby minimising collateral damage to healthy tissue and allowing more sustained and aggressive treatment. Ferrari has around 480 publications to his name, with over 20,000 citations. He also holds dozens of patents for inventions including different varieties of nanoparticles for drug delivery.

Originally from northern Italy, he studied mathematics at the University of Padua before moving to University of California, Berkeley, where he studied for a masters and a PhD in mechanical engineering. He went on to become an associate professor at Berkeley and moved into medicine when he became a professor of bioengineering and mechanical engineering at Ohio State University.

Ferrari later moved to the MD Anderson Center and the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. In 2010 he became president and CEO of the Houston Methodist Research Institute.

Will Universities, Colleges, And Law School Campuses Be Open In Fall 2020? – Above the Law

Maybe? Maybe not?

The short answer is that there is no definitive answer yet. Universities and law schools arent ready to make a decision because the pandemic is so fluid and there is so much uncertainty, nor do they have to yet. But the question is being discussed on a daily basis, and we have spent a good deal of time speaking with college presidents, provosts, and deans and trying our best to get the most recent and trust-worthy epidemiological modeling and medical community input.

This podcast condenses those two perspectives that of higher education and that of the medical community into a prediction for the fall. Our prediction, based on speculation, and which we are going to devote continuous attention to over the next several months, is that it is likely many colleges and universities will not have on-campus classes this fall. This is particularly true for those schools that are able to take a semester or even year-long financial hit. We allude to Bill Gatess work that states this may be the once-in-100-years pathogen we have not been prepared for, and the infection rate of the virus plays into this prediction. Certainly there is a broad continuum where you could see some colleges entirely online, some with a hybrid online/on-campus model, and potentially some that are fully open.

What about law schools, the area our firm has the most expertise in? The dynamics are a little bit different here because law schools generally dont have, or dont have to have, student housing. Their student bodies are considerably smaller (there are roughly 112,000 total law school students in the country vs. 22 million college students), and thus with testing improvements and availability you could see law schools having a model where all faculty and students are tested, and those who test negative can be in the classroom, which would also be webcasted or recorded for those who cant be in the classroom for a variety of reasons.

In fact, we think some law schools will open and some will remain closed. They may start up, even independent of central university openings, or they may ride out a semester of online-only courses. Some may do the model described above and some may open fully with a hand on the button to shutter immediately if the spike comes back from the virus.

Is There Any Legitimate Health Advice in Gwyneth Paltrow’s "Goop Lab"? – InsideHook

Welcome toThe Workout From Home Diaries. Throughout our national self-isolation period, well be sharing single-exercise deep dives, offbeat belly-busters and general get-off-the-couch inspiration that doesnt require a visit to your (now-shuttered) local gym.

The word energy already had too many meanings.

Border Collie puppies barnstorming around a backyard are energetic. Cereal bars that contain fructose and maltodextrin give us the energy we need to get through an afternoon. Whirring wind turbines convert kinetic mechanical energy to electricity. Bitcoin mining uses as much energy (in terawatt-hours) year-over-year as the entire Czech Republic.

The word officially entered into overuse, though, on episodes five and six of The Goop Lab. The fifth episode, literally called The Energy Experience, features LA-based body worker and somatic energy practitioner John Amaral, who has patients lie down on massage beds as he plays with an undiscovered dimension in the air four to six feet away from their bodies. In the sixth episode, a medium named Laura Lynne Jackson beams energy into sitters, then interprets concepts the universe sends back to her to communicate with the dead.

There is little point in getting too worked up over the confounding definition of energy that Gwyneth Paltrow, her lifestyle empire, and this TV show a six-episode docuseries that dropped on Netflix about 10 weeks ago have entered into the words canon. During Goop Lab, discussions on energy feel somewhat reminiscent of a sophomore philosophy class where no one has actually done the reading. It is a cosmic entity, not necessarily meant to be understood, but apparently deserving of a wry smile, a bemused tilt of the head, a pat on the back for trying. This is the gray area though goop often colors it Easter pink where pseudoscience thrives, where phrases like food for thought and give it a go legitimize (if not blatantly prioritize) anecdotal accounts over blind clinical trials. Its why the internet was ready the second this series dropped in late January, its why the United Kingdoms National Health Service outright declared the show a considerable health risk to the public.

Of course, the NHS has had to battle far more considerable health risks than Paltrowism in recent weeks. And its alarmingly tempting, in the age of COVID-19, as we all turn into streaming service ultra-marathoners, to even seek out what is widely-agreed upon nonsense. Anything thats intertwined with personal health, too, at a time when were all thinking of our bodies how to boost our immune systems, how to sweat without doing the same run for the 13th time since shelter-in-place began is extra alluring.

With all of that out of the way, I have a confession. I quarantine-binged The Goop Lab in its entirety this weekend. I went in with an open mind, refusing to read a single scalding review beforehand (those came later and seriously, these writers had their takes ready, they might as well have been dropping obits) and actively searched for legitimate, usable strategies, practices or concepts I could apply to my personal fitness. Why take goop so seriously? It has a $250 million valuation, millions of followers across all relevant social platforms, hugely successful pop-up shops in cities across the States, and yearly wellness summits attended by high-profile actors, athletes and authors. It matters, whether you like it or not. And besides, I enjoy learning new ways to feel and perform better. An open, patient ear helps in that regard.

That ear had to hear the word energy exactly 4,000 times over the season, but there actually was, believe it or not, some relevant wellness knowledge hidden within all the Goopian muck. That muck generally followed the same format: Paltrow and her Chief Content Officer Elise Loehnen interview a couple special guests in a perfectly-lit office where people whod rather be drinking sangria pitchers under delicately hung Edison bulbs drink hemp tea while riding around on bubblegum pennyboards. The special guests, whove taken select goop staffers on some sort of retreat in the weeks or months preceding, get a chance to explain their research and dish on one staffer who had a particularly strong reaction to the experience. There are only three episodes worth watching within that framework, and just two special guests especially worth remembering. These episodes are the second, third and fourth: Cold Comfort The Pleasure Is Ours and The Health Span Plan.

This episode focuses on aging, and introduces the work of both Dr. Valter Longo, a cell biologist who works at the University of Southern California, and Dr. Morgan Levine, a professor in pathology at the Yale School of Medicine. Both are concerned with the concept of aging as disease; similar to the work of Harvard geneticist Dr. David Sinclair, who I had the chance to speak to just last month, Dr. Longo has shown that aging can be addressed at the molecular level with various lifestyle changes. For example, hes a big believer in calorie restriction (intermittent fasting) and a pescatarian diet.

Dr. Levine, meanwhile, employs blood work to test for inflammation, metabolism, kidney and liver function, and cardiovascular health to determine a persons chronological age. Think of it as a true or internal age. When contrasted with your chronological age, a biological age is a more accurate arbiter for your risk of cancer, heart disease, or diabetes. Personal fitness, much like personal savings, thrives best on information. Sometimes, you have to look at your account balance to plan a way forward. Talk to your doctor about the best way to get your blood tested, or consider a biological age test. There are a few out there, including myDNAge, TeloYears, and InnerAge. If the number is above your chronological age, dont panic. Thats where the work of Dr. Sinclair is so helpful; hes proven in Cambridge that fasting, exposure to cold temperatures and high-intensity interval training will literally put years on your life and high-quality years, at that.

Easily Goop Labs most celebrated episode, and for good reason. The star is Betty Dodson, a 90-year-old whos been teaching women how to orgasm since the 70s. Shes a gynecologist with Bourdain vibes, a patchy jacket and no hesitation in correcting Paltrows odd misunderstanding of female anatomy. (What GP considers the vagina at one point during the episode is actually the vulva.) If youre a woman, this is essential, long-overdue TV Goop Lab does well to show over a dozen different types of vulva, after a discussion on the disconcerting rise of labiaplasty surgery, which has long been a mainstay in the porn industry. Most courageously, though, the episode closes with the orgasm of Dodsons fellow sex educator Carlin Ross, whom she guides through the experience. How does any of this relate to wellness?

For women, improved sexual awareness and a reliable masturbation routine can help improve mood, aid in sleep, improve confidence and communication with partners, and even reduce pain from menstrual cramps. For men who have female partners, those are all good things. When supported, youll likely grow closer with your partner, and have a healthier relationship which, we all know by now, has massive affects on personal wellness. For those who dont (but hope/plan to, one day), its an important kick in the pants, a lesson that the orgasms performed through porn are just that, performances, and expectations need to be personalized and constantly reset or reconsidered depending on the women theyre seeing.

Ill admit, I was a little surprised to see Wim Hof himself on an episode of Goop Lab. He doesnt just look like Santa Claus hes borrowed a bit of his aura, a rare 21st-century legend. Upon hugging him, Paltrow even laughed Youre actually real! The Dutch extreme athlete made it over 7,000 feet up Mt. Everest wearing only a bathing suit and shoes. Hes run half-marathons completely barefoot, on the ice and snow. He once made full-body contact with ice for nearly two hours. Hes an absolute maniac, in other words, just sans David Blaine intensity. Hes far more mischievous, and able to tap into that secret sauce when needed, like the original, puppet-Yoda of Empire Strikes Back. On Goop Lab he has eight staffers practice the three pillars of the Wim Hof Method: cold therapy, breathing and meditation. They breathe into their bodies, aggressively, filling the rib cage with air, until their limbs start tingling and their minds go numb (Ive practiced this before, with a surf yogi in Hawaii; its nuts), allowing their thoughts to drift away. Then they practice 20 minutes of snow-ga barefoot flows in the snow along the banks of Lake Tahoe before actually jumping into the water.

It would all be so perfectly goop if only Wim Hof, and cold therapy werent actually scientifically corroborated. Exposure to cold water is dynamite for mental health, which is the main benefit Wim Hof touts in the episode; it encourages the release of neurotransmitters like dopamine, adrenaline, norepinephrine and serotonin, all of which have anti-depressive effects. But it isnt too shabby for the body in general, either; occasionally swimming around in a freezing cold lake, or committing to a bonkers-chilly shower has been shown to catalyze post-workout recovery, stave off injury, lower blood pressure, increase metabolic rate and stimulate the immune system.

Netflix captured one hell of a moment Wim Hof yelling into the California winter as editorial assistants jumped into 38F water and like all TV, I guess, thats what this show was ultimately about, good shots and better soundbites. The disclaimer at the beginning of each episode did indeed portend that Goop Lab wasnt meant to replace medical advice. But at least that scene meant something. It gave something to the world, a proven practice that might be worth introducing to our daily doldrums. And at the very least, it gave that tiny, mighty word, energy, a well-deserved break.

Can canine coronavirus drug indomethacin be used in treating humans suffering from COVID-19? – MEAWW

A drug helped dogs fight off a type of coronavirus common in canines. Now, scientists believe the same drug might come to the rescue of humans suffering from COVID-19.

Though promising, the preprint study is preliminary. The study evaluated the drug Indomethacin against canine coronavirus. This virus, which is known to cause a highly contagious intestinal disease in dogs, shares ancestry with the new coronavirus.

Doctors prescribe indomethacin to reduce fever, pain, stiffness and swelling from inflammation. "Definitely worth additional testing of Indomethacin (Indocin), an anti-inflammatory from the 1960s, shown to inhibit CoV-2 & #coronavirus in dogs," tweeted Dr David Sinclair, from Harvard Medical School.

The focus is on old drugs because new treatments could take years to develop. "Given the urgency of the SARS CoV-2 outbreak, we focus here on the potential to repurpose existing drugs approved for treating infections caused by RNA viruses," the authors wrote in their study.

In one study, scientists showed that indomethacin can keep the SARS coronavirus a close relative of the new coronavirus from replicating inside cells. Scientists will learn more about its efficacy against the new coronavirus and its side-effects as they conduct more studies.

In this study, which has not been peer-reviewed yet, the team divided dogs infected with the canine coronavirus into three groups. Of the nine dogs that received an antiviral drug called ribavirin, three died. The second group fared a lot better. They received antibodies against the virus (anti-canine coronavirus serum) and only one dog died.

None of the dogs belonging to the third group died. Receiving Indomethacin, all the nine dogs survived the disease. What's more, dogs belonging to groups 2 and 3 recovered quickly.

"The results show, indomethacin can achieve a similar efficacy as treatment with anti-canine coronavirus serum, and superior efficacy than the treatment with ribavirin," the authors said.

As for lab-grown cells infected with the new coronavirus, they saw that indomethacin is toxic against the virus. Aspirin, on the other hand, was ineffective.

Drugs such as indomethacin and aspirin belong to a category of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID). Doctors use them to treat pneumonia, which is common among severe COVID-19 patients.

However, some experts have raised an alarm against the class of drugs, suggesting that the drug might worsen the disease. "However, current scientific evidence does not indicate that patients with mildly symptomatic COVID-19 could be harmed by using NSAIDs," wrote Petros Ioannou, a post-doctoral researcher at the University Hospital of Heraklion, Crete, Greece, in the BMJ.

Earlier, France's health minister issued a warning against other NSAID drugs such as ibuprofen and cortisone. Other experts have said there is not enough evidence against the use of ibuprofen. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a statement saying: "At this time, FDA is not aware of scientific evidence connecting the use of NSAIDs, like ibuprofen, with worsening COVID-19 symptoms. The agency is investigating this issue further and will communicate publicly when more information is available."

Biotech Firms May Be Key To Beating The Coronavirus, But They’re Not Immune To Financial Worry – WBUR

Scott Robinson used to be an investment banker, so he has a pretty good idea why it's tough these days to raise money for his Cambridge biotechnology startup, MicroQuin even though the company believes its approach to fighting cancer could show promise against the coronavirus.

"At the moment, a lot of the funding has really been allocated to things that people are thinking are quick wins stuff like drug repurposing or vaccinations," he said.

For a handful of drugmakers taking on the coronavirus, fundraising is no problem right now. But for many other Massachusetts biotechs, the pandemic threatens to stop the flow of money.

If you're a company like MicroQuin, and you don't have a coronavirus vaccine candidate or a drug ready to test against COVID-19 good luck getting new financing.

And there's no telling when investors will feel comfortable spending again.

"We've seen many investors sort of push the pause button for the next quarter, as they assess the market," saidJonathan Norris, a managing director at Silicon Valley Bank. He spoke this week on a virtual panel organized by LabCentral, the Kendall Square workspace where Robinson's company and about 70 others are based.

"We just don't know how long this pandemic is going to last," Norris said. "The big financial questions that investors are talking about are, 'What's going to happen in the public markets? Will IPOs happen?'"

Initial public offerings of stock can be critical to biotechs. They often infuse cash into young firms that have raised venture capital but don't yet have any FDA-approved drugs to produce revenue.

The Nasdaq Biotechnology Index has recovered some losses, after falling more than 20% last month. But it's still a scary time, said Robert Urban, the former head of Johnson & Johnson's innovation division. J&J has secured a $1 billiondeal including federal grants to try to develop a vaccine, but most companies aren't in that position.

"We have some tough days ahead and maybe tough months ahead," Urban said of the biotech industry. "So, anyone who's running a business a life science business, in some ways, may be even more difficult because they require so much money needs to be taking some very careful care of the decisions that they make."

Urban and Norris were joined on the LabCentral panel by Matt McTygue, an attorney who represents venture capitalists. It's not that investors aren't doing any deals, McTygue said, but he offered a warning: "Financings that do happen during this time are going to be on more investor-favorable terms, more dilutive terms."

In other words, entrepreneurs who are desperate for funding may have to give up bigger-than-usual ownership stakes in their companies.

1. GARLIC

4.VITAMIN C

Vitamin C plays an important role in your body and has many health benefits. 5.NEEM TREE THERAPY

Neem is best known for its anti-aging properties. Due to its antioxidant properties, neem protects the skin from harmful UV rays, pollution and other environmental factors. The vitamins and fatty acids in neem improve and maintain the elasticity of the skin, reduce wrinkles and fine lines. This make you and your skin look rejuvenated and youthful.

Neem is also beneficial in fighting against fungal infection. Its anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties keep the harmful bacteria and fungi at bay. Thus, it protects the skin and keeps the skin related diseases away.

A new report from BioMed Centrals Complementary and Alternative Medicine, a peer-reviewed research journal, shows a compound in neem leaf could disable the virus from replicating and causing infections. The ideal flu protection targets the flu virus directly by disabling a critical part of the virusa part that does not change over time, and that the virus needs for its survival. In our attempt to control and contain the coronavirus, we must not lose sight of our local remedies used over the years to fight and prevent disseated remedies described above have been scientifically proven and have been used widely as alternative medicine to fight complications.

Recent research and widely documented and peer reviewed journals also support the use of these recommendations.
