Days after beginning to work remotely in mid-March, Albright Associate Professor of TheatreandFashionand Costume Shop Coordinator,Paula Trimpey, M.F.A., heard that supplies for nurses were already in critical supply. So she fired up her sewing machine and began making face masks for anyone who asked. Associate Professor ofChemistry and Biochemistry,Christian S. Hamann, Ph.D., took up the charge of sterilizing the masks.

It started with a theatre alumnus who wanted some for a family member with a compromised immune system and went on to many,many friends and family members, said Trimpey. So far, the masks have gone to a Doctor of Pharmacology at John Hopkins in Baltimore, a nurse at theReading Dialysis Unit,Albright College Public Safety and Aramark Food Services at Albright, said Trimpey.

We use 100% cotton with a high thread count since this also bleaches well. The ties allow for any size face/head where elastic masks can sag on small faces/heads.

On April 3, Governor Tom Wolfcalled for all Pennsylvanians to wear maskswhen venturing away from home, but to reserve surgical and medical mask for health care workers and first responders.

Masks help prevent people from sharing illnesses, said Wolf. But, they dont do a great job at keeping people from getting sick; and, theyre not foolproof, so it is critical that our first act is to ask ourselves if we really need to leave our house. If we dont really, truly need to leave, then we shouldnt.

To help others create homemade masks, Trimpey and Hamann created a series offive how-to videos, showing the full process, from cutting patterns to sterilizing finished masks.

JMU Chemistry department uses chemicals left in the building to make hand sanitizer – WHSV

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) With labs shut down until further notice amid the COVID-19 pandemic, James Madison University's Chemistry Department is using some of the chemicals normally meant for teaching to aid local medical workers instead.

According to a statement from JMU, heads of the department quickly realized that some of their stored chemicals, like ethanol, glycerol and hydrogen peroxide, could be combined to make hand sanitizer, which has been in short supply in the Shenandoah Valley, just like most of the country.

"When I saw that hand sanitizer was needed, I asked our stockroom manager, Brian Kane, to do an inventory of the departmental supplies that we would need to make the sanitizer according to the WHO recipe and to calculate how much we could make with our unused chemicals," said Linette Watkins, unit head for the JMU Chemistry Department.

According to the school, Kane determined they had enough chemicals on hand to make about 100 liters, but could make around double that amount if they could find more glycerol.

"When the department faculty found out that we needed glycerol to make more, they donated more glycerol from their own labs to increase our capacity and we hope to make at least 200 liters," Watkins said.

The supplies are being pulled from the inventory by Kane, who is also making labels and then leaving them for Chakree Tanjaroon, an instrument chemist, who is making and bottling the solutions, according to Watkins.

Tanjaroon, who also is in charge of checking the building and helping keep equipment safe while the department lowers its energy expenditures, has been working alone to abide by social distancing protocols and has been making 30 liters a day.

The department donated its first 50 liters last week to Augusta Health.

Watkins said sanitizer will also be made for Sentara Rockingham Memorial Hospital and local doctors offices. Students may be employed to make some no-contact deliveries in the next few weeks.

Is there a My Chemical Romance nod in this twenty one pilots video? – Alternative Press

With the country on virtual lockdown, many people have turned toward iconic bands such as twenty one pilots and emo royalty My Chemical Romance for entertainment during the coronavirus pandemic. Some have spent their time rewatching videos and noticing Easter eggs from the bands for the first time.

One twenty one pilots fan uncovered a potential nod to MCR in the video for their Trench song, My Blood.

The duo have long been fans of My Chemical Romance. In 2017, they covered the MCR song Cancer for a tribute compilation album celebrating the tenth anniversary of My Chemical Romances The Black Parade.

The band even added the cover of Cancer to their live show setlist. In 2017, they played the song throughout the Emotional Roadshow tour.

twenty one pilots take on the song was celebrated by both fans and MCR frontman, Gerard Way.

It was great. I was really impressed. I didnt know what to expect, and I was surprised by what I heard, Way shared. He added that he was a fan of the band and that what they do is really interesting.

Now, a Reddit user posted a screenshot of the My Blood video suggesting that twenty one pilots MCR tribute doesnt stop with their cover.

Focusing on the Halloween party the band performs at in the video, the user points out a person is dressed up in a black bandleader hat with silver accents. Theyre also wearing a spiked collar and have an exaggerated painted black smile. All of this is reminiscent of My Chemical Romances iconic The Black Parade era from the skeleton named Pepe dressed in a bandleader costume to the bands own attire.

The screenshot got a couple of comments, with one person saying that it was interesting seeing a nod to My Chemical Romances magnum opus in another bands video.

Someone else said it wasnt surprising given that twenty one pilots are huge fans of My Chemical Romance. Given how deep twenty one pilots go with their own imagery, we cant help but wonder if there are other hidden references to MCR or otherwise in their other videos. What Exactly *Is* an At Home Chemical Peel, And Which One Is Right for Me? – Yahoo Lifestyle

You spring clean your home. How about your skin? As we leave winter (and the dull, dry skin associated with it) behind, a quick way to refresh your glow is to try an at home chemical peel.

According to Dendy Engelman, MD, of Manhattan Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery in New York, "its a method of exfoliation that uses a powerful dose of acids to weaken the cellular bonds between skin cells in the dermis. This helps to slough away dead, dull-looking cells, reveal healthy cells, reduce hyperpigmentation and improve skin texture."

"The main difference between the acids used in chemical peels is particle size. AHAs, or alpha hydroxy acids, are the smallest, then comes the BHAs, or beta hydroxy acids, followed by the PHAs, or polyhydoxy acids, which have the largest molecules," explains Engelman. "In-office procedures use stronger concentrations, which penetrate deeper into the skin, thus revealing more noticeable results as compared to an at-home peel, but because of their strength, they should only be administered by a licensed practitioner."

It depends on what youre looking to troubleshoot. If you are acne-prone or tend to easily get blackheads, BHA are your best bet. "Beta hydroxy acids like salicylic acid or willow bark extract have keratin-dissolving properties that can break down dead skin cell build up and decongest pores," says Engelman.

If you have dry or dull skin, Engelman recommends an AHA. "Alpha hydroxy acids like glycolic or lactic acid has the smallest particle size, meaning it is the most effective at breaking down the cellular bonds, which in turn, helps to reveal new, fresh skin cells." What this means for you: Major glow.

If you have sensitive skin that is easily irritated, try a PHA. "Polyhydroxy acids like gluconolactone or lactobionic acids have a larger molecular structure than AHAs and BHAs, which means they take longer to penetrate the skin and they wont penetrate as deeply, so theyre a much milder way to exfoliate," explains Engelman.

"Before you commit to using an at-home peel, there are a couple of questions you need to ask yourself, such as: Are you using a retinol or retinoid? Are you using any other exfoliating products (such as a scrub), and are you going to shave around that area of skin?" says Engelman. "All of these things remove the top layer of your skin so adding a peel to the mix can deplete your epidermis and compromise your skin barrier. If you answered yes to any of those questions, Id recommend stopping them for three days before and after you use a peel to minimize irritation."

A good practice when introducing an active ingredient (like retinol or chemical peels) into your skincare regimen is to start slow. "I always recommend starting off with one to two times a week at firstmaybe even once every two weeks for people with very sensitive skin," advises Engelman. See how your skin reacts and then you can increase usage as needed. "The biggest mistake people make with exfoliants and with any products is over-doing it."

Next, post-peel care is very important. "You want to use an occlusive moisturizer, which is designed to prevent water loss in your skin. Preventing water loss allows your skins natural oils to nourish the newly revealed, younger skin cells, says Engelman. Look for moisturizers that have ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and peptides to strengthen the skin barrier."

And last but certainly not least: "It is important to limit sun and wind exposure by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily, wearing protective clothing and staying indoors during peak hours (between 10 am and 4 pm), since your skin is more vulnerable to environmental aggressors after a peel."

Neurologic problems are common in patients with COVID-19, and in some cases are the first symptoms seen, according to a new analysis of patient data.

Among 214 patients hospitalized for COVID-19 in early 2020, 34% had neurologic issues, investigators found. In addition, patients with the most severe illness had significantly more of these problems, including acute cerebrovascular events, impaired consciousness, and muscle injury, reported Bo Hu, M.D., Ph.D., from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China.

Most neurologic symptoms came early in the illnesses course. Symptom categories included:

Impaired consciousness included change of consciousness level (somnolence, stupor, and coma) and consciousness content (confusion and delirium).

Notably, some patients with fever and headache were admitted to the neurology ward after COVID-19 was ruled out. Days later, they developed established COVID-19 symptoms (cough, throat pain, lower lymphocyte count and lung scan signs) and were transferred back to the isolation ward.

Full findings were published Friday in JAMA Neurology.

Acute Neurologic Deficit Linked to Salicylate Toxicity – MPR – Monthly Prescribing Reference

A recently published report describes the case of a 61-year-old female patient with a history of stroke that experienced an acute focal neurologic deficit due to salicylate toxicity and highlights the importance of considering this diagnosis and initiating treatment as quickly as possible.

In the emergency department (ED), the patient reported experiencing hemiparesis in her upper and lower extremities after waking up that morning. Further questioning revealed that over the past 2 weeks, the patient had been feeling generally unwell, anxious, and had experienced persistent chest pressure, which she treated with aspirin.

The patients past medical history included essential hypertension, generalized anxiety disorder, and a previous ischemic stroke with an associated seizure disorder. She stated that her seizure disorder was well controlled with diazepam and phenobarbital, however, she had not taken either medication the week prior to her ED presentation due to her illness. Additionally, the patient stated that she was not taking antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs at the time.

After her arrival, the patient became confused and began experiencing tinnitus, shortness of breath, and blurred vision. Due to her neurologic presentation, age, and past medical history, recurrent stroke or transient ischemic attack were initially considered. After these diagnoses were excluded through further evaluation, laboratory findings revealed a mixed acid-base disorder with a wide anion gap metabolic acidosis and respiratory alkalosis.

Upon further questioning, the patient admitted to excessive use of salicylate over the previous 2 to 3 weeks. Laboratory findings revealed her initial serum salicylate level to be 78.1mg/dL (upper therapeutic limit, 19.9mg/dL).

The patient was treated with oral activated charcoal and intravenous sodium bicarbonate, potassium and dextrose. The patients symptoms completely resolved within 48 hours of her presentation to the ED.

The delay in diagnosis was a concern, considering the potentially fatal nature of salicylate toxicity and the importance of early treatment, the authors concluded, adding that physicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for salicylate toxicity in patients who present with acute neurologic symptoms, and medication history should include direct questioning for salicylate use.

A third of COVID-19 patients have neurological problems – The Dubrovnik Times

Coronavirus not only causes fever, cough and breathing problems, but also neurological problems such as headache and dizziness, a new study has found. The study was conducted by Chinese scientists on patients in Wuhan, the origin of the pandemic, and published in JAMA Neurology.

They reported that a third of the 214 patients they examined showed signs of a virus affecting the nervous system. Earlier, there were cases where patients suffering from covid-19 lost their sense of smell and taste.

These symptoms indicate that the brain was also affected in some way, commented infectious disease specialist Bernd Salzberger of the University Hospital in Regensburg. "But there are very few studies on the effects of coronavirus on patients' brains. We are still tapping in the dark," he added.

The study from Wuhan was based solely on medical history, laboratory findings and radiological examinations of 214 patients. Neurologist Ling Mao from the Huazhong Faculty of Science and Technology wrote that 78 patients (36.4 percent) had neurological problems.

Most often it was dizziness and headache. In addition, 12 of them lost their sense of taste and 11 of them smell. Six patients also suffered a stroke. But Chinese scientists are uncertain whether these symptoms are due to the disease itself or are part of the body's response to inflammatory processes.

Does Long-Term Exposure to Air Pollution Lead to a Steeper Rate of Cognitive Decline? – Newswise

Newswise MINNEAPOLIS People who live in urban areas with higher levels of air pollution may score lower on thinking and memory tests and may also lose cognitive skills faster over time, or it is possible they also may not, according to a study published in the April 8, 2020, online issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. Researchers examined the association of air pollution levels and cognitive impairment and decline in participants in two large epidemiological studies. They found an association between the air pollution and cognitive decline in one study group but not in the other.

As people live longer lives and the aging population grows, age-related cognitive decline is a growing public health concern with profound social, economic and health effects, so finding ways to reduce the risk is important, said study author Erin R Kulick, Ph.D., M.P.H., of Brown University School of Public Health in Providence, R.I., and a member of the American Academy of Neurology. Air pollution can affect large populations of people because it has known cardiovascular risks, and previous research has found that it may also contribute to cognitive decline. However, the results of our research were mixed.

The study involved people living in the Northern Manhattan area of New York City who were enrolled in two larger long-term studies: 5,330 people with an average age of 75 enrolled in the Washington Heights-Inwood Community Aging Project; and 1,093 people with an average age of 70 enrolled in the Northern Manhattan Study. Both groups were ethnically and racially diverse with black, white and Hispanic participants.

All participants were given medical exams at the beginning of the study as well as cognitive tests to measure memory, language skills and executive function, which involves thinking skills like organizing, planning and completing tasks.

The group from the Washington-Heights-Inwood study of 5,330 participants was followed an average of seven years with six rounds of follow-up testing every 18 months to two years. The Northern Manhattan study group of 1,093 participants was followed for five years with one follow-up round of testing.

Researchers used the residential addresses of each participant to determine their exposures to three air pollutants. Those pollutants were nitrogen dioxide and two groups of particulate matter, particles of liquids or solids suspended in air that were less than 2.5 microns in diameter called fine particulate matter and particles that were less than 10 microns in diameter called respirable particulate matter. Average levels of air pollutants were similar for both groups of participants. In each group, participants were divided into four groups based on their air pollution exposure.

Researchers found that participants in the Washington-Heights Inwood study were exposed to a yearly average of 32 parts per billion of nitrogen dioxide, 13 micrograms per cubic meter (g/m3) of fine particulate matter and 21 g/m3 of respirable particulate matter The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers up to 53 parts per billion to be a safe level of yearly average exposure to nitrogen dioxide, up to 12 g/m3 for fine particulate matter and up to 50 g/m3 for respirable particulate matter.

While the levels were in the range considered safe by the EPA, its possible that these results reflect higher levels from an earlier point in time. It also raises the question of whether the federal levels are low enough to protect peoples health, said Kulick.

The researchers found that in the Washington Heights-Inwood group, people with greater exposure to higher levels of air pollution had lower scores on the tests at the beginning of the study and more rapid rates of decline.

Exposure to nitrogen dioxide was linked to an accelerated rate of cognitive decline comparable to one year of aging. Results were similar for fine and respirable particulate matter.

In the Northern Manhattan group, researchers did not find an association between cognitive function and air pollution. Kulick says the difference in results may be because the second group was much smaller and only had one round of follow-up compared to six rounds for the first group.

A strength of our study was that we were able to analyze the rates of cognitive decline over time so it adds important findings to the growing body of scientific evidence about air pollution and its effects on the brain health of older adults, Kulick said. More research is needed to better understand our studys mixed results. The good news for public health is that air pollution can be reduced, and has been in some cities, through laws and regulation. But there are still millions of people living in areas of the United States where major air quality improvements are needed.

A limitation of the study was that while it included levels of air pollution near a persons residence, it did not account for levels of pollution at the workplace or elsewhere. Also, many participants grew up in other countries and may have had different exposures to air pollution at younger ages.

State accuses Alamo doctor of attempting to assist in C-section while drunk – danvillesanramon.com

A doctor from Alamo is at risk of having her medical license revoked after the California Medical Board alleged that she attempted to assist with childbirth surgery at San Ramon Regional Medical Center while under the influence of alcohol.

Filed on March 26 by the state board, the complaint alleges that Dr. Michele Louise Riopelle, an obstetrician and gynecologist (OB/GYN) with San Ramon Regional at the time, was called in to assist in a caesarean section and reported to the hospital for the operation despite having a blood alcohol level of 0.30%.

The complaint alleges the doctor entered the operating room in an intoxicated state but did not take part in the C-section that night.

It was not immediately clear whether Riopelle was represented by an attorney. There is no written response to the complaint, nor any other documentation provided by Riopelle's side, in the California Medical Board online public document database.

Krista Deans, a spokesperson for San Ramon Regional, told DanvilleSanRamon.com on Tuesday, "Dr. Michele Riopelle is not practicing at San Ramon Regional Medical Center."

The incident occurred at approximately midnight on the night of July 31 to Aug. 1, when Riopelle was the on-call obstetrician for the San Ramon Regional labor and delivery department.

According to the Medical Board's complaint, after receiving the call that she was needed to assist in an operation, Riopelle arrived to the hospital within 40 minutes -- even though San Ramon Regional bylaws require a 30-minute response time for C-section assistance -- during which time nursing staff noticed she was "unsteady on her feet, slurring her speech, confused and incoherent."

According to the complaint, Riopelle denied taking any medication and claimed she was fine, but she was observed having difficulty washing her hands and was unable to tie her shoes or apply her mask correctly.

While nursing staff tried to prevent her from doing so, Riopelle allegedly insisted on entering the operating room where, in the presence of the patient's husband, she attempted to put on her gown and gloves. Eventually Riopelle had to be escorted out of the operating room after attempting to approach the patient, according to the complaint.

The complaint added that the attending OB/GYN was able to complete the C-section with assistance from a pediatrician prior to Riopelle entering the operating room.

Riopelle was taken to the hospital's emergency room, where she was noted to have "altered speech and poor coordination," according to the complaint. After claiming to have taken a muscle relaxant the previous day, Riopelle denied having consumed any alcohol.

Fearing a "neurological event" the emergency room physician performed a full neurological evaluation that included a CT scan, before a blood test revealed a 0.30% blood alcohol level, according to the complaint. Riopelle was then released to the care of her husband with a diagnosis of acute alcohol intoxication.

After charging Riopelle with inappropriate conduct, the Medical Board of California can revoke her license to practice, have it suspended or place her on probation.

Specialty Physicians Weigh in on the State of Practice After COVID-19 – Rheumatology Network

The negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on specialty medical practices may lift by the start of next month, according to a new report issued by the market research company Spherix Global Insights.

"Our frontline healthcare leaders are scared, worried, and frustrated. Collectively, they estimate it being eight to nine weeks before things begin to improve and 83 percent of those surveyed last week (April 1) expect things to get worse in the next two weeks. In the words of one neurologist, "(My greatest concern is) that it will linger on to some degree for much of the year and dramatically and permanently affect people's livelihoods, relationships, and dreams," according to a statement issued by Spherix.

The company surveyed 252 rheumatologists, dermatologists, gastroenterologists, nephrologists and neurologists early this month findng that office visits are down by at least 80 percent, despite the adoption of telemedicine. Doctors, the report said, have had challenges with telemedicine and are still unclear about reimbursement policies for the use of telemedicine in place of in-office visits. "Though telemedicine consults have seen successive increases each week, it is not coming close to bridging the gap, and some specialties are having a more difficult time than others," Spherix stated.

The drop in cases has placed financial strain on office-based practices, particularly for dermatologists and gastroenterologists who rely heavily on elective procedures. Many practices have furloughed or staff or laid off works altogehter. If the lockdown and pandemic continues for another two months, some private practices may not survive. "Those in smaller practices are most concerned," the report stated.

While 23 percent of physicians belive the stimulus package will help their practice, more than one-third anticipate little to no impact from government assistance and the majority of physicians have ranked President Trump's handling of the crisis "low satisfaction."

"Drugs associated with being more targeted regarding their immunosuppression and generally considered as having favorable safety profiles may come off the least scathed: Amgen's Otezla for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and Takeda's Entyvio for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), though the latter will be counter-balanced by tempered use of infusion products. For most leading brands in the autoimmune space, there have been minimal issues with the supply chain, the exceptions being hydroxychloroquine (84% of rheumatologists report issues) and Genentech's Actemra (34% of rheumatologists report issues). Products that require administration by a healthcare professional, such as Sun Dermatology's Ilumya for psoriasis, also face a challenging scenario," the report stated.

Drug suppliers, such as AbbVie, have been in frequent communication with dermatology, gastroenterology and rheumatology specialists. "It seems that AbbVie in particular is attempting to thwart any launch setbacks for their next generation JAK inhibitor (Rinvoq), as the company was listed the most frequently by rheumatologists as continuing to provide samples via mail and engage in e-detailing platforms."

"Nephrologists have been a bit more buffered than other specialists with regard to patient volume decreases, as their dialysis population continues to require thrice weekly treatment to survive. However, their patient population immunosuppressed kidney transplant patients, elderly dialysis patients receiving care in group settings, and a patient base with chronic kidney disease that typically has multiple other co-morbidities is associated with a significantly higher risk of COVID-19 complications. Over the past two weeks, nephrologists increasingly reported having action plans in place for dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak at a dialysis unit; the vast majority are prepared. Most of those surveyed give high satisfaction ratings to dialysis organizations, such as Fresenius and DaVita, and the American Society of Nephrology, for their communication around COVID-19. Only 22% feel that the pharmaceutical industry is providing a high level of support/communication, and more than half say that increased samples, largely to help bridge patients with financial hardship, would be appreciated."

Approximatley half of neurologists are now starting fewer multiple sclerosis patients on their first disease-modifying therapy (DMT) or switching patients to new treatments, compared to prior to the COVID-19 outbreak. "While concerns related to immunosuppression are definitely a factor, access to infusion centers and delayed scheduling of next doses may also be playing an increasing role in the decreased use, as three out of five neurologists indicate that at least some patients are having difficulty getting their Ocrevus treatments (compared to only 28% for a high-efficacy oral DMT like Novartis' Gilenya)."

Large-scale analysis links glucose metabolism proteins in the brain to Alzheimer’s disease biology – National Institute on Aging

In the largest study to date of proteins related to Alzheimers disease, a team of researchers has identified disease-specific proteins and biological processes that could be developed into both new treatment targets and fluid biomarkers. The findings suggest that sets of proteins that regulate glucose metabolism, together with proteins related to a protective role of astrocytes and microglia the brains support cells are strongly associated with Alzheimers pathology and cognitive impairment.

The study, part of the Accelerating Medicines Partnership for Alzheimers Disease (AMP-AD), involved measuring the levels and analyzing the expression patterns of more than 3,000 proteins in a large number of brain and cerebrospinal fluid samples collected at multiple research centers across the United States. This research was funded by the National Institutes of Healths National Institute on Aging (NIA) and published April 13 in Nature Medicine.

This is an example of how the collaborative, open science platform of AMP-AD is creating a pipeline of discovery for new approaches to diagnosis, treatment and prevention of Alzheimers disease, said NIA Director Richard J. Seyfried, Ph.D., and Allan Levey, M.D., Ph.D., all at the Emory School of Medicine, Atlanta, analyzed patterns of protein expression in more than 2,000 human brain and nearly 400 cerebrospinal fluid samples from both healthy people and those with Alzheimers disease. The papers authors, which included Madhav Thambisetty, M.D., Ph.D., investigator and chief of the Clinical and Translational Neuroscience Section in the NIAs Laboratory of Behavioral Neuroscience, identified groups (or modules) of proteins that reflect biological processes in the brain.

The researchers then analyzed how the protein modules relate to various pathologic and clinical features of Alzheimers and other neurodegenerative disorders. They saw changes in proteins related to glucose metabolism and an anti-inflammatory response in glial cells in brain samples from both people with Alzheimers as well as in samples from individuals with documented brain pathology who were cognitively normal. This suggests, the researchers noted, that the anti-inflammatory processes designed to protect nerve cells may have been activated in response to the disease.

The researchers also set out to reproduce the findings in cerebrospinal fluid. The team found that, just like with brain tissue, the proteins involved in the way cells extract energy from glucose are increased in the spinal fluid from people with Alzheimers. Many of these proteins were also elevated in people with preclinical Alzheimers, i.e., individuals with brain pathology but without symptoms of cognitive decline. Importantly, the glucose metabolism/glial protein module was populated with proteins known to be genetic risk factors for Alzheimers, suggesting that the biological processes reflected by these protein families are involved in the actual disease process.

Weve been studying the possible links between abnormalities in the way the brain metabolizes glucose and Alzheimers-related changes for a while now, Thambisetty said. The latest analysis suggests that these proteins may also have potential as fluid biomarkers to detect the presence of early disease.

In a previous study, Thambisetty and colleagues, in collaboration with the Emory researchers, found a connection between abnormalities in how the brain breaks down glucose and the amount of the signature amyloid plaques and tangles in the brain, as well as the onset of symptoms such as problems with memory.

This large, comparative proteomic study points to massive changes across many biological processes in Alzheimers and offers new insights into the role of brain energy metabolism and neuroinflammation in the disease process, said Suzana Petanceska, Ph.D., program director at NIA overseeing the AMP-AD Target Discovery Program. The data and analyses from this study has already been made available to the research community and can be used as a rich source of new targets for the treatment and prevention of Alzheimers or serve as the foundation for developing fluid biomarkers.

Brain tissue samples came from autopsy of participants in Alzheimers disease research centers and several epidemiologic studies across the country, including the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA), Religious Orders Study (ROS) and Memory and Aging Project (MAP), and Adult Changes in Thought (ACT) initiatives. The brain collections also contained samples from individuals with six other neurodegenerative disorders as well as samples representing normal aging, which enabled the discovery of molecular signatures specific for Alzheimers. Cerebrospinal fluid samples were collected from study participants at the Emory Goizueta Alzheimers Disease Research Center. These and other datasets are available to the research community through the AD Knowledge Portal, the data repository for the AMP-AD Target Discovery Program, and other NIA supported team-science projects operating under open science principles.

A biochemistry professor at Kansas State University has exactly the right idea: Kansas should aggressively test as many people as possible for the coronavirus.

In a letter to the editor earlier this week, Sally Newton suggested that our state could prove to the rest of the country that this is the way to stop a viral pandemic.

Kansas is not that big, relatively speaking, with a population of 2.9 million people, about a third the size of New York City. The number of confirmed cases is around 500; in New York, there are more than 47,000 confirmed cases

About 5,400 people in Kansas have been tested.

Authorities have doled out the tests in a miserly manner in our state, and in the U.S. generally, because of short supplies. We cant blame local authorities for setting priorities in testing. It is an enormous failure on the part of the federal government.

Other countries are taking a far more aggressive approach: In Germany, theyre testing 500,000 people a week, and theyre looking to ramp up to 200,000 per day. England is aiming for 25,000 people a day by the end of April. Sweden and Austria are at 15,000 tests per day.

The consequence of a lack of testing in the U.S. has been that governments have to shut down everything in order to keep everybody away from each other. Social distancing is a logical response, under those circumstances, in order to keep from overwhelming the health care system. Citizens have to do their part by following those rules, and nothing were saying here is intended to undermine that. In other words, stay home. Its our best shot right now.

But its not ideal. Shuttered businesses mean lost jobs, among other things.

In Kansas, we could pretty much test everybody if the right people and political forces got behind it. Sally Newton, the K-State biochemistry professor, said in the letter we published Sunday, that it could be called the Kansas Experiment, and that could show the rest of the country that its the way to move forward.

Mass testing could allow us to quarantine people who actually have the virus or whove been in contact with people carrying it. That would prevent infected people who dont yet show symptoms from giving it to others. It could also shorten the duration of social distancing, if done right.

But Queensland Rugby League chairman Bruce Hatcher said it was premature to rule out Brisbane hosting an Origin match this year - let alone scrapping the financial juggernaut.

UVic donates hand sanitizer – UVic The Ring

University of Victoria chemist David Leitch may be working from his home office, but that doesnt hamper his instinct to pursue scientific discovery to help produce and donate a potential life-saver in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

UVic on Tuesday delivered more than 200 litres of hand sanitizerenough for about 65,000 single dosesfor use by Island Health, whose front-line workers are in the thick of responding to the health crisis.

The ingredients are basic. Its pharmaceutical grade 190 to 200 proof ethanolmuch stronger than the spirits you get at the local liquor storehydrogen peroxide and a softening agent like glycerin to make sure your hands dont get dried out to the point of seriously cracking, says Leitch, who collaborated on the project with six other researchers.

The recipe is in line with World Health Organization guidelinesso its easy, safe, useful and potentially life-saving for someone in this current climate.

The UVic research community is pulling together to address the COVID-19 crisis including digital technologies, biomedical and biochemistry, genome research, proteomics, nursing, law, mathematics, social sciences, exercise science and 3D printing of supplies. To date, there are dozens of UVic research projects linked to the COVID-19 response.

Soap and water continue to be the best bet for hand hygiene. If that is not possible, using a hand sanitizer that is at least 60 per cent alcoholor 120 proofhelps avoid people getting sick or spreading germs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Leitch, who led the UVic effort, was able to leverage his prior experience in the pharmaceutical industry to plan and execute a manufacturing campaign consistent with stringent Health Canada standards. He recalls discussing with his colleagues the opportunity with simple questions: Its not like we can just whip up a solution and hand it over to a health authority. What is the regulatory process around this, and can we pull this off in time to make a difference?

Researchers used supplies already on hand. From conception, licensing approval to manufacture, the process took less than two weeks, much faster than normal, says Leitch. He adds delivery would not have been possible without extremely rapid turnaround time for Health Canada approvals, a donation of kegs by a local microbrewery to mix the sanitizer and the incredibly hard work of UVic researchers.

UVic chemistry faculty and staffKatherine Elvira, Scott McIndoe, Jeremy Wulff, David Berry, and department chair, Neil Burfordalong with Heather Buckley, cross-appointed in chemistry and civil engineering, spent a recent morning mixing up the solutions.

In uncertain and different times, researchers are also doing everything they can to use their knowledge and experience as teachers to keep the UVic community engaged with science, despite the new remote working reality, says Elvira.

Science contributes vitally to some of the worlds toughest problems including the current COVID-19 response. We are allresearchers, students, UVicadapting as a community, she says. Throughout, we need to ensure we can support our students and their research and their experiences right now.

Burford adds he is inspired by the hard work of faculty, staff and students, and their efforts under these very challenging conditions to maintain consistency. We have to be in touch with our colleagues, our students, checking in often, however we can. I am especially impressed with the resolve of the students as they adapt to the COVID conditions. We will get through this together, says Burford.

One of the leading Ghanaian scientists helping us understand the novel coronavirus disease is Professor Gordon Akanzuwine Awandare of the School of Biochemistry and the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP) at the University of Ghana.

He, together with other leading scientists at the University of Ghana, has successfully sequenced the genome of the novel coronavirus disease by examining some 15 confirmed cases of the disease in the country.

Prof Awandare has been a leading light in research on many diseases in the country, especially the malaria parasite.

Born in Kandiga in the Kassena Nankana West District of the Upper East Region, Prof Awandare battled with recurring malaria as a child.

Defying all odds to have a good education, he obtained an a Bsc in Biochemistry from the University of Ghana in 1998 and an MSc in the same field in 2002 before obtaining his PhD in the area in 2007 from the University of Pittsburgh in the United States of America. His area of interest was the malaria parasite, inspired partly by his battle with the disease as a child.

Driven by patriotism, he returned to Ghana after spending three years in America contributing to knowledge there.

Prof Awandare took extraordinary steps to set up his own research group notwithstanding the lack of funds and other bottlenecks.

His major breakthrough came in 2013 when he led a consortium that secured funds to set up a new state of the art centre in the country to research into infectious pathogens. The consortium secured some $8 million from the World Bank, and Prof Awandare became the founding director of the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP) in 2013.

The Centre cutting edge research has ensured that it has secured several other funding to undertake research into many diseases.

He has received many awards for his excellence on research.
