Once Displaced Immigrant Dr. Ezzat Moghazy, Partners with AYBOS as the The Rebuild Your Mind Initiative Assistant Director to launch the 50,000 Hour Mental Health Challenge to all mental health professionals. Dr. Moghazy learned the power of "self-healing" early in life as he came to America without a penny in his pocket nor a roof over his head; what Moghazy did have was an integrative approach to eastern philosophy that he learned from his father.

DENVER, Feb. 8, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ --Dr. Ezzat Moghazy began consulting AYBOS and the Rebuild Your Mind (RYM) Initiative in 2019 after Dr. Nina Minagawa sent out a message to her professional network calling for support of the initiative. Still in his pre-doctorate at the time, Dr. Moghazy answered the call. Both Moghazy and now RYM Director Dr. Minagawa have both been instrumental in providing clinical direction for RYM since then. With Minagawa on medical leave, Moghazy has been filling both positions in her absence. Moghazy has accomplished an impressive resume, to now include: a Doctorate and Ph.D. in Integrative Medicine, over 20 years of experience in the medical field, a Master's degree in Physical Therapy, Certified Kinesiology Taping Instructor (CKTI), Reiki Master Teacher (RMT) since 1999, and Registered Psychotherapist /Clinical Hypnotherapist a PhD in Integrative Medicine. He met the love of his life, Michelle and started to practice in Denver & Boulder Colorado, which has become a huge success.

Since receiving his Doctorate in late 2019, Moghazy has accepted the full responsibility of the Assistant Director role for RYM. Dr. Moghazy is also the founder of My Best Healer (MBH), and has already donated many hours of consultation, as well as therapy by pledging the support of his practice. MBH, has offices in Denver and Boulder Colorado, specializing in: Chronic Pain, Weight Management, Smoking Cessation, Trauma/PTSD, Relationships Anxiety/Stress, Confidence, and Handwriting Analysis, according to their website (mybesthealer.com). Moghazy explains, "My Best Healer means You are your own best healer. In medicine, we all know that we treat people, but they heal themselves."

Dr. Moghazy learned the power of "self-healing" early in life as he came to America from Egypt without a penny in his pocket nor a roof over his head. His English was severely broken and a distant second language. What Moghazy did have was an integrative approach to eastern philosophy that he learned from his father. He taught him to pull resources from within, and he did just that.

Moghazy says that he represents the American Dream and has experienced it firsthand. Coming from such humble beginnings to become the accredited doctor he worked so hard to be, he has a passion for others in similar or worse positions. This is the motivation behind his mission for thousands of people across the world to learn how to pull resources from within themselves as taught early by his father. Ezzat starts by finding the root trauma or talent and either diminishes it or helps it to blossom. Through the initiative and community outreach, RYM and MBH also help at-risk youth of Denver see their potential and give them a light to hold on to.

At the heart of this goal is teaching the youth how to find their inner resources and encourage them to lead a life of passion, thereby creating a positive everlasting impact in the world. When they have nothing to hold on to, Moghazy's modalities and RYM techniques can help them learn to do great in life for themselves. Moghazy not only practices, but also represents this model as a child himself that started from nothing and worked his American Dream into a PhD and his own practice. You can see this passion is Dr. Moghazy's RYM Challenge Support Video included here: https://youtu.be/7P4n4RjEtSo

Dr. Moghazy has created a unique Quantum Medical approach, meaning to become resourceful, that trains neural pathways in the mind to become resourceful in order to see the world from within. This is the vision and clinical direction Moghazy brings to the RYM Initiative overall. In addition to the local economy stimulation through MBH and AYBOS, the RYM Initiative keeps on track with their goal to destigmatize mental health experiences all together.

Story continues

To accomplish this and make these resources available to every individual & business, Dr. Moghazy and AYBOS have launched the 50,000 Hour Mental Health Challenge to all mental health professionals. Moghazy and Calyn Crow of Rocky Mountain Solutions are the first therapists to put their "modalities where their mouth is." Both have donated the first hours to the challenge in hopes that as many doctors, therapists and mental health professionals follow their example in droves.

Moghazy, Crow and AYBOS are working unceasingly to make Colorado the most efficient trauma-informed (education about the brain, body & mind), trauma-conscious (understanding how to utilize this education effectively), and lastly trauma-responsive (having the resources readily available to respond to trauma in each individual) state in the US.

Both Moghazy and Crow have filmed versions of their approaches for the challenge with AYBOS Video Team. You can see both videos here:

The American futurist and social engineer have known worldwide, Jack Fresco, who recently passed away at the age of 101, took the view that science is the unification of all human knowledge geology, astronomy, anatomy, meteorology and many others are not separate from one another.

The same is true in medicine. There are so many wonderful specialists in the world, but they treat only a small piece of the human body. What we seek to create at the IMP Clinic is a new generation medical center entirely based on family medicine, which in Ukraine is an undeveloped specialization compared to other Western countries.

International Multi-Profile Clinic views Family Medicine as the future of medical practice; it unifies all medical knowledge in one setting. A good family physician treats their patients as a whole: body, mind and soul, using evidence-based, integrative medicine because in our opinion all methods are good if they help a patient to be healthy.

Another thing that makes IMP Clinic unique is the team of multi-disciplined, multilingual and multicultural physicians, nurses and healthcare workers who use an integrated approach to restore health and quality of life to our patients. Vibroacoustic Therapy Shows Brain and Sleep Quality Benefits in Clinical Trial for Insomnia – Sleep Review

Many people find it easier to sleep in a car or a train because of the vibration and noise that helps rock them to sleep. But a more specific approach for using a vibratory and auditory stimulation program helps improve brain function and sleep amount and quality in patients with insomnia, according to a study published in the journal Sleep Disorders.

Using fMRI scans, the study found improvements in the functional connectivity in the brain as well as in measured amount of minutes slept and self-reported sleep quality. The areas of the brain that were affected were a combination of areas that are involved in sleep itself as well as areas that have improved function as the result of having better sleep. Such an approach might be particularly useful for people with insomnia by helping them to improve their amount and quality of sleep. The study was performed by the Department of Integrative Medicine and Nutritional Sciences, as well as the Departments of Neurology and Radiology, at Thomas Jefferson University.

Approaches that use a combination of vibratory and auditory stimulation have the goal of matching the brains natural rhythms and help improve the amount and quality of sleep. Another goal is to help improve the brain areas affected by a lack of sleep. The current study found changes in areas of the brain associated with both auditory and vibratory sensation. In addition, areas such as the thalamus and prefrontal cortex, which are critical for memory and cognition, were also affected. The current study tested this by tracking changes in functional connectivity using resting state fMRI.

This study is essential for understanding how vibratory and auditory stimulation can improve sleep amount and sleep quality in insomnia patients, says senior author on the paper Daniel Monti, MD, chairman of the Department of Integrative Medicine and Nutritional Sciences and Director of the Marcus Institute of Integrative Health at Thomas Jefferson University, in a release. The study shows how the intervention has a direct effect on vibratory and auditory processing areas of the brain, as well as on important cognitive areas that are impaired when people dont get enough sleep,

This study evaluated 30 patients with insomnia symptoms who continued their current treatments and were placed into two groupsthe first group received the auditory and vibratory stimulation for approximately one month; and the second group, the control patients, received only their standard-of-care treatment for insomnia for the same time period. Those patients in the active group were given an auditory stimulation program, lasting approximately 60 minutes that they used each night as they went to sleep. In addition, they came into the Marcus Institute of Integrative Health twice a week to receive a combination of vibratory and auditory stimulation for 24 minutes using a specially designed chair that merges the two stimuli. This combination of the vibration and auditory stimulation during the day, coupled with the auditory stimulation during sleep, is supposed to help the brain enter the sleep state more effectively.

Patients underwent brain scanning using resting state fMRI to measure functional connectivity that evaluates how different parts of the brain interact with each other at the start of the study and after a month. Changes in brain connectivity reveal how the brain rewires itself when people are sleeping better. Some of the changes are related to the effects of the therapy itselfthe impact of vibration on sensory areas of the brain and some are related to the effects of improved sleep. This fMRI scan was used to determine the changes in brain function associated with auditory and vibratory stimulation in patients with insomnia. Patients also were evaluated clinically using several different measures of sleep quality and quality of life.

Compared to controls, the patients receiving the auditory and vibratory stimulation had significant changes in functional connectivity in the sensory and auditory receptive areas of the brainshowing how the stimulation seemed to be having its effect. In addition, areas involved in higher cognitive and executive functions, such as the thalamus and prefrontal cortex, were significantly affectedshowing that improved sleep improves your brains function.

This is an exciting study that shows how vibration and sound stimulation affect the brain and improve sleep in patients with insomnia and could have important implications for better managing patients with sleep problems, says corresponding author and neuro-imaging expert Andrew Newberg, MD, professor and director of research at the Department of Integrative Medicine and Nutritional Sciences. The investigators hope that this research will open up new avenues of treatment for insomnia patients.

There are no conflicts of interest. The study was funded by a gift from the Marcus Foundation.

The (over) promise of the mindfulness revolution – San Francisco Chronicle

The phones screen turns a serene blue, and Calm, the leading mindfulness application, opens. At the very center, without capitalization or punctuation, small and faint, are the words take a deep breath.

That gives way to a menu. What brings you to Calm?

The app offers options to reduce anxiety, develop gratitude, build self esteem, even increase happiness.

The next screen offers a seven-day free trial. Once the trial has ended, the annual rate is $69.99, a small price for happiness.

Somewhere around 2010, according to experts and Google search data, the practice of mindfulness began an upward swing. In less than a decade, it has become the fastest-growing health trend in the United States, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Mindfulness rules the online app store. The San Francisco-based Calm is valued at $1 billion, and its competitor Headspace at $350 million. (The industry as a whole has been estimated to be worth as much as $4 billion.) Meditation retreats are en vogue. Corporations offer access to mindfulness in the same way they do for gyms. Even the military uses mindfulness breathing techniques to boost soldiers performance.

But as with any Next Big Thing, there are reasons to be cautious. Some say this rush into mindfulness has outpaced the science and stripped it of its cultural context. All of this threatens to turn a tool for well-being, for situating oneself in the current moment, into a tool for standard American commercialism.

Around the same time mindfulness began its upward trajectory, Ronald Purser, a management professor at San Francisco State University, started to feel the familiar weight of doubt. Hed been doing a fair amount of corporate management training and consulting redesigning the workplace to work better, at least in theory, for everybody. I became somewhat disillusioned and disenchanted, he says. Even when we were making progress, trying to redesign work so employees would have more autonomy and decision-making, the management sort of pulled the plug on some of those experiments.

It was around this time, too, that Chade-Meng Tan, a software engineer at Google, gained notoriety for integrating mindfulness into Googles corporate culture through a series of in-house mindfulness seminars. In 2012, Tan turned those courses into a blockbuster book, Search Inside Yourself: The Unexpected Path to Achieving Success, Happiness (and World Peace), and Purser found himself attending Tans very first public offering.

I became very disappointed by what I saw, just in terms of what the program was and how superficial it was, Purser says. I just saw this as part of the interest in behavioral science techniques as a way of yoking the interest or subjectivity of employees to corporate goals.

A year later, Purser published an essay with the Huffington Post. It was titled Beyond McMindfulness. Mindfulness meditation, he wrote, was making its way into schools, corporations, prisons, and government agencies including the U.S. military. Purser, a student of mindfulness for 40 years, wasnt knocking the practice but was wary of its growing reputation as a universal panacea for resolving almost every area of daily concern. Last year, Purser expanded on the essay and published a book titled McMindfulness: How Mindfulness Became the New Capitalist Spirituality.

Early on in his book, he writes this: I do not question the value of adapting mindfulness for therapeutic use, nor do I deny that it can help people. What bothers me is how its promoters want things both ways: one minute, mindfulness is science, since thats what sells; the next, it stands for everything in Buddhism, since thats what makes it sound deep.

The issues Purser called out eight years ago have only grown with time. Rhetoric, he says, still outpaces results. The practice becomes increasingly decontextualized, meme-ified and gamified. Mindfulness becomes a cure for more and more our happiness, our anxiety, our pain, even world peace.

Its worth pausing a moment to define or at least try to define mindfulness.

At its very core, its deepest and truest roots, mindfulness is a Buddhist meditation technique. There are hundreds, probably thousands of different meditative techniques. This is only one of them, says Mushim Ikeda, a Buddhist meditation teacher. Traditionally, in the Buddhist scriptures, it is said that what we call mindfulness meditation was one of 40 different techniques that the historical Buddha, the one we call the Buddha, talked about. So it wasnt even his one and only meditation technique according to those scriptures.

She knows those scriptures well. Ikeda, who primarily teaches at the East Bay Meditation Center, describes herself as a socially engaged teacher a social justice activist, author, and diversity and inclusion facilitator.

She describes mindfulness meditation as a secular term in Buddhism, one thats also called insight meditation. This is a sort of awareness, she says, that is different from the awareness that we might call everyday awareness the sort we need to drive a car, or maintain a conversation, or use an ATM. She and others describe mindful awareness as spacious and nonjudgmental. Ikeda says, Its been said mindfulness only sees. It does not judge.

The most common technique involves closing the eyes and focusing on the breath and only the breath, moving other thoughts, and the thoughts that come with those thoughts, away and out.

Mindfulness as a secular, western therapeutic intervention did not begin in Silicon Valley. Rather, youd have to go back to 1979 and a man named Jon Kabat-Zinn and the founding of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Kabat-Zinn has studied the effects of what he dubbed mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR for short), on everything from brain function to skin disease.

Still, its hard to ignore Silicon Valleys latest role in spreading and expanding mindfulness in the pursuit of a different tech culture value, peak performance. There is Search Inside Yourself, the book that coincided with the movements growth spurt. There are Twitter co-founder Jack Dorseys much-publicized meditation retreats. (Black Mirror, the dystopian science fiction show, seemed to parody both him and the now-ubiquitous apps.) Recently, there was the dopamine fast, a pseudo-scientific dopamine reset by way of doing nothing. (One originator said he drew directly from Buddhist Vipassana meditation when he crafted the fast.)

The voices are soothing and smooth soft, but not quite a whisper. The cadence and diction perfect, gently pulling you along. Birds chatter in the background. Waves move gently to meet a beach. Or maybe a brook babbles as it pushes over and under and between river rocks.

Breathing in ... I am calm.

Breathing out ... I am at peace.

A chime rings, a signal that this 90-second meditation to calm anger has ended. Calm offers its congratulations.

The danger in this rapid evolution is that it threatens to turn a very old practice into a fad that overpromises and underdelivers.

Helen Weng has practiced Buddhist meditation for more than two decades. I was reading a lot of books about psychology because I was unhappy because high school is horrible, she says. And her father, who, along with her mother, had immigrated to the United States from Taiwan, could offer her books about Buddhist philosophy. The two came together. The Dalai Lamas teachings offered her an opportunity to cultivate her own well-being. I dont like the word happiness anymore, but you can use mental exercises to become more aware of your feeling states and your thoughts.

Now Weng works as a clinical psychologist with the psychiatry department at UCSF and a neuroscientist with the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine and the Neuroscape Center, both at UCSF as well. Her scientific work uses magnetic resonance imaging to measure the amount of oxygen in the blood that flows to the brain as people meditate. Essentially, she can track whether the meditator is actually focused on their breath or if their attention has wandered. And in her clinical work, she offers meditation as one of many possible therapeutic interventions.

Still, she calls the recent spread of mindfulness very freaky.

Im very proud that practices from eastern cultures and religions generate so much interest, she says. At the same time, mindfulness and its results are super hard to study. So much so that I just thought I was a bad scientist for a long time. Whats more, she says, meditation isnt always the right sort of behavioral therapy.

Im very disturbed by these messages that meditation basically cures everything or its good for everyone or theres universally very good positive effects. The effects are really moderate and subtle. Its not any better than any other kind of psychotherapy, she says. Part of it is cultural appropriation where its this magical, mystical thing that then people can say does all these things, and I think were still in the height of that and its going to take some time for things to settle down.

Medical students, she says, inevitably ask her how much time they have to commit to mindfulness to make it work. There are studies that show clear benefits to mindfulness. Weng points to one that indicated 30 minutes a day of compassion meditation for two weeks increased altruistic giving to strangers and brain responses to pictures of people suffering.

But the key here is consistency. What happens if you work out for 30 minutes just once? she asks. It benefits you a little bit. Thats good. But if you just do it once, its not going to have a long-term effect.

After the chime and the congratulations, the waves keep moving in and out, and a quote appears onscreen. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. (A quote sometimes attributed to Albert Einstein, but probably more correctly attributed to Narcotics Anonymous.) And in that moment, Calm reminds you that you really should turn on push notifications, in order to fully experience Calm. Decline and itll ask one more time about its mindfulness reminders.

Are you sure? Its hard to set aside time for yourself in our busy world without a little help.

Farrah Fawcett and Lee Majors are jogging. Theyre tan, of course. Their shorts are short. Her blond hair is fanned out, so are his brown curls. She has a broad, blindingly white smile and a red handkerchief tied around her neck. His jacket is zipped down almost to his navel; his chest is hairy. And right beside them, a headline: Farrah & Lee & Everybodys Doing It: Stars Join The Jogging Craze.

This is the cover of the July 4, 1977, issue of People magazine. Alex Will, the chief strategy officer for Calm, the industry-leading mindfulness meditation app, likes to reference this cover when he talks about mindfulness. (Theres even a copy of the issue at the office.) To understand the future of mindfulness, just look to the past.

Mindfulness is becoming mainstream, Will says. People are starting to understand that taking care of the mind is just as important as taking care of the body. Meditation and mindfulness is one way to do that.

In some respects, Calm isnt doing anything that hasnt already been done. Before smartphones, one could buy a meditation CD, slip it into a home stereo and start counting breaths. The app just makes it more portable and more accessible than ever before. I think one of the reasons Ive been so successful is that it is a very low bar for someone to try and get into, Will says. There are short, two-minute long meditations, narrations to help with sleep, even a beginners guide to mindfulness. Similarly, if you want to go deeper, we have a 30-minute master class where you can learn how to break bad habits.

All of the content, Will says, is vetted by mindfulness instructors, and, now that the app is available in more than 100 countries, the programming is also run by people to make sure translations work. This is very nuanced, he says. Language really matters. The Calm app has also been part of various clinical studies in an attempt to back up the applications rhetoric.

Mindfulness, by the way, has already had its magazine-cover moment. Not quite 37 years after the jogging craze, Time magazine featured the Mindfulness Revolution on its Feb. 3, 2014, issue. A blond, fair-skinned model stands straight, hands at her sides, eyes closed, face slightly upward. And the headline: The science of finding focus in a stressed-out multitasking culture.

Mindfulness began to trend in large part because corporations embraced the practice as a way to help employees relieve stress. This is one of the cruxes of Pursers concerns that mindfulness is just a way to wring more productivity from employees, a sleight of hand that shifts the onus from the company to the worker.

In 2012, the year Chade-Meng Tan published Search Inside Yourself, the idea of offering mindfulness courses to employees still felt novel. The New York Times featured Tan and the course hed developed for Google employees a course that involved meditation, Tibetan brass bowls, stream-of-consciousness journaling and lots of emotional openness. Even then the course was framed as a way to help employees deal with their intense workplace no mention of toning down the intensity.

Eight years later, mindfulness courses are the rule, not the exception. Apple, Nike, HBO and Target have all offered some form of mindfulness training to employees. Aetna, the insurance provider, decided to offer mindfulness and other stress-relief activities (including dog petting) after an internal study found that the most stressed-out employees spent $1,500 more a year on health care. And if a company cant bring a trained expert on board, well, they can always give employees memberships to Calm or Headspace.

The Buddha taught that almost everything comes and goes, says Mushim Ikeda, the East Bay Meditation Center instructor. Its called impermanence or change. And health trends famously come and go. Its a product of our capitalist system.

One year, its a certain kind of berry thats going to cure everything. Another year, its mindfulness meditation thats going to cure everything. Five years from now, heaven only knows, itll be something else. Burnt toast who knows?

Ikeda offers a path forward, a path separate from capitalism, a path that encourages students to cultivate a practice in which they care for themselves so that they may, in turn, care for their communities. Its an approach based in social justice and altruism. And yet, she isnt dogmatic.

Mindfulness, Ikeda says, does not judge.

A person might use mindfulness to lower their blood pressure or achieve peak performance. A corporation might use mindfulness to paper over an inherently unjust and healthy system. All this, she says, is like using a Swiss Army knife for just one thing. Its not what the tool was intended to do, and its not all it can do.

Mindfulness is always mindful awareness of something, Ikeda says. Who knows what a given individual is going to do with it? Or what it will do for them?

An individual might, for instance, become mindfully aware of a broken system.

10 Easy Ways To Control Your Cravings And Prevent Weight Gain – NDTV News

Cravings are a result of your cells not getting what they need: Luke Coutinho

We all experience cravings. Craving for comfort food or your favourite food items can be triggered by mood changes, lack of sleep, fad diets, lack of exercise and much more. Lifestyle coach Luke Coutinho says that giving in to cravings is one of the top most reasons why you gain weight. Cravings can lead to hormonal imbalance and also make you go through unnecessary guilt. Cravings are basically the result of not giving your body what it needs. When you don't nourish your cells with proper food, the body responds to it in the form of cravings, says Luke in one of his posts on Instagram.

1. In order to prevent cravings, the key is to nourish your body with proper food. Following a fad diet that is restrictive in nature will not just increase the amount of cravings you experience, but will also cause nutritional deficiencies, mood swings and irritability.

2. Consume a proper balanced diet which includes all food groups. Do not deprive your body of any foods. Practice portion control and satiate your hunger with every meal.

3. Avoid eating refined carbs in foods like pasta, pizza, burger, deep fried, junk, processed and packaged food. Many people eat comfort food as a way to cope up with stress. Stress causes certain regions of the brain to release chemicals like opiates and neuropeptide Y. These chemicals trigger mechanisms that are similar to cravings that you get from fat and sugar.

4. Avoid eating sugary foods in excess. Luke says that you may satiate your hunger and cravings by eating junk food and sugar, but the need of your cells is still not met. This further increases cravings.

5. Consume sufficient water and stay hydrated. Many a times, the need for drinking water is confused with hunger. If you feel hungry shortly after eating a main meal, it may be because of thirst. Drink a glass of water before looking for food. It will make you satiated and will also reduce cravings.

6. Avoid getting extremely hungry by keeping long gaps between your meals. Practice meal prepping every week and make sure you carry at least three meals for the day before leaving home.

7. Carry health snacking options with you. Instead of going for a chocolate or a bag of chips when you experience cravings, have nuts and seeds, ghee-roasted makhanas, rice puffs, roasted black chana or a seasonal fruit. They will satiate both your hunger and cravings without affecting your health or weight.

8. Get sufficient sleep. Being sleep deprived for even one day can increase the amount of cravings you feel the next day. So make sure you get a good night's sleep regularly.

9. Eat mindfully without any distractions. Do not have a phone, tablet, laptop, TV, book or newspaper when you are eating food. Doing this can help you be in sync with your satiety signals and prevent overeating and cravings.

10. Include more protein and fibre in your diet. These foods fill you up quickly, keep you full for longer and control appetite and cravings.

‘Think inclusive, accessible and affordable’: Healthcare experts at IIMB’s Healthcare Leadership Summit 2020 – India Education Diary

Bengaluru: Although we have achieved mastery over the prevention of infections, been able to eradicate many diseases and assumed technology-assisted procedures with modern medicine, there is a need for large-scale nationalisation of healthcare services. There must be an integrative medicine model of healthcare, emphasis on preventive and promotive components, and incentivization of healthy family concept, said Dr. B.N. Gangadhar, Padma Shri recipient and Director, National Institute of Mental Health & Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), in his keynote address at Ayusmat 2020, the healthcare summit at IIM Bangalore, here today. Aysumat 2020 was organized by the students of the General Management Programme for Healthcare Executives (GMHE) at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB). The theme of the event was Disruptive Innovation The Future Landscape of Healthcare, which brought together health innovators, investors, and healthcare providers. It rendered a useful platform for participants healthcare experts, start-ups, investors, and technology innovators across the ecosphere to network, meet funders when they also learned from the industrys best and shared their ideas on creating better healthcare outcomes. The focus at the event was on three key areas: Innovation, Investment, and Adoption. The summit had a panel on Disruptive Innovation in Healthcare, comprising Dr. Dhruv Joshi, Co-founder at Cloudphysician, Dr. Arjun Kalyanpur, Director and Founder at Teleradiology Solutions, Prasad Kompalli, Co-founder and CEO at Mfine, and Dr .Vishnu Vardhan, COO at DayToDay Health. The discussion was moderated by Prof. Shankar Venkatagiri, Programme Director, GMHE. Speakers at the summit included Dr. Sharan Patil, Chairman, Sparsh Hospitals, Dr. Vidur Mahajan, Head of R&D, Centre for Advanced Research in Imaging, Neurosciences & Genomics, Dr. Arjun Arunachalam, Founder and CEO at Voxelgrids Innovations Pvt. Ltd., Kishalay Ray, Vice President at Sharp Business Systems (India) Pvt Ltd, and Sakthivel Selvaraj, Director of Health Economics, Financing and Policy at Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI). Healthcare managers of the future will be quasiinformaticians, remarked Dr. Vidur Mahajan, while addressing the audience on Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare at the summit. AI is simply a tool, albeit a powerful and highly accessible one. As AI is percolating into all aspects preventive and population health, diagnostics, and therapeutics of healthcare, we are still in the early days due to some fundamental issues like implications of AI, and the technical, ethical and legal consequences. For deploying AI, probably a parallel IT stack would be required. Success will come from technologies that affect the iron triangle with the apexes of Cost, Quality and Access that must be taken care of, he explained. A panel discussion on Ecosystem for New Ventures in Healthcare comprised Vishal Bali, Executive Chairman, Asia Healthcare Holdings & Co-founder, Medwell Ventures, Dr. Aniruddha Malpani, Angel Investor, Malpani Ventures, and Hrishikesh Datar, Founder & CEO, Vakilsearch. Prof. Srivardhini Jha, from the Entrepreneurship area at IIMB, moderated the discussion.

Theres some scientific truth to happy wife, happy life – MarketWatch

Your partners mindset might prevent your own cognitive decline.

A new study released by Michigan State University this week suggests that theres some truth to the old saying happy wife, happy life.

Researchers followed almost 4,500 heterosexual couples (average age 67) from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Healths Health and Retirement Study for eight years. The subjects optimism was assessed at the beginning of the study, and their brain function was measured every two years.

And the experiment found a possible link between having a partner who is optimistic, and delaying the onset of dementia or Alzheimers disease, as people with happier and healthier partners often lived longer and staved off cognitive decline.

We spend a lot of time with our partners. They might encourage us to exercise, eat healthier or remind us to take our medicine, suggested William Chopik, assistant professor of psychology and co-author of the study, in a statement. Theres a sense where optimists lead by example, and their partners follow their lead.

He noted that lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy weight and getting plenty of physical activity have been shown to help prevent cognitive decline. When your partner is optimistic and healthy, it can translate to similar outcomes in your own life, he wrote. It looks like people who are married to optimists tend to score better on all of those [physical and mental health] metrics.

Whats more, the study found that when couples remembered a shared experience together like in Googles GOOG, +0.63% tear-jerking Loretta commercial during the Super Bowl richer details emerged from those memories. In the sentimental Google spot, which features a real couple, an elderly man uses his Google Assistant to help him remember things about his late wife, Loretta, who loved going to Alaska and eating scallops.

There is science behind the Google ad, said Chopik. Part of the types of memories being recalled were positive aspects of their relationship and personalities.

Theres other research to suggest that youre better off, physically and financially, if you look on the bright side more often. Pessimists are 35% more likely to suffer from a heart attack or stroke than optimists, according to a recent meta-analysis of data from 230,000 men and women in the U.S., Europe, Israel and Australia over 14 years.

People with greater optimism are also more likely to achieve exceptional longevity and live to age 85 or older, according to a recent studyfrom the Boston University School of Medicine.

Optimists are far more likely than pessimists to make smart money moves, according to a survey of more than 2,000 people released last year. It found 75% of optimists have gotten creative with ways to save money versus just 60% of pessimists; and 61% of optimists have started an emergency fund, compared with just 43% of pessimists.

A2015 studyalso found that optimists earned about $3,000 more than cynics over nine years, whileanother reportsuggested that people who wear rose-tinted glasses are promoted more, in part because they work so well with others.

Any Amount of Running Will Reduce Your Risk of Death – Daily Cup of Wellness – Beliefnet

Pixabay.com

Research has already shown that running is an activity that can help our overall health, but how much do we have to run to gain the benefits?

Researchers from Australia, Austria, Finland, and Thailand performed a comprehensive analysis of available evidence and found that any amount of running is linked to a significantly lower risk of death from any cause. Their results were published online in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

The systematic review included 14 studies that involved a total of 232,149 participants. The studies followed up the health outcomes of the participants for periods that ranged between 5.5 years and 35 years. Over the study periods, 25,951 participants died.

When the study data were pooled, any amount of running was associated with a 27 percent lower risk of death from all causes for both sexes, compared with no running. Furthermore, running was associated with a 30 percent lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease, and a 23 percent lower risk of death from cancer.

Even small stints of running, which was defined as going out for a jog just once every one to two weeks for less than 50 minutes at a slow average speed of less than 6 miles per hour, was found to increase health and offer longevity. The research team says their findings point to some light running as a great fitness option for people who may not have enough time most days to get in a full workout.

The researchers caution that their investigation was observational and did not aim to establish cause. Moreover, they note that the studies that they looked at all varied in their methodology and cohort size, which may have affected the final results. They remained confident though that generally speaking, running seems to help health.

If more people all over the world incorporated just a little bit of running into their day-to-day lives, the studys authors believe the global population would see great improvements in both overall health and longevity.

The researchers say they were motivated to perform the study because of a number of unknowns that still remained in reference to runnings health benefits. For example, it was never clear just how effective running is at preventing cardiovascular disease or cancer, or for that matter, exactly how much running an individual must participate in to reap such benefits.

Embark announces preliminary research findings linking elevated levels of inbreeding to shorter lifespan in dogs; partners with breeders in commitment to improve long-term canine health

BOSTON, Feb. 10, 2020 /PRNewswire/ --Embark Veterinary, Inc., a global leader in dog genetics, today announced its partnership with the iconic Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. This marks the second year Embark and Westminster have teamed up; the two organizations share a common goal to advance canine health research and increase the longevity and vitality of dogs.

Embark Logo (PRNewsfoto/Embark Veterinary, Inc.)

"We are excited and proud to partner with the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show," said Ryan Boyko, co-founder and CEO of Embark. "The show's global reputation is unparalleled and gives us a chance to jointly raise awareness and increase the use of genetic health testing to positively impact the health and wellness of dogs."

Embark recently completed a preliminary research study using genetic coefficient of inbreeding (COI), that demonstrates that a higher COI is a partial predictor of shortened lifespan and decreased litter size. When looking at a single breed, the least inbred dogs can live on average a full year longer than the most inbred dogs; in some breeds this effect is even larger. The same holds true across mixed breed dogs accounting for body size and other important factors.

Responsible breeders have recently become increasingly aware of the importance of diversity in breeding healthy dogs. Before Embark, they used a dog's pedigree to help inform optimal mating pairs. However, while pedigrees provide a useful reference point, they are less accurate than robust genetic measures of inbreeding. By combining the art of breeding with the science of Embark's DNA testing, breeders can help future generations of dogs live longer, healthier lives.

"Measuring and utilizing genetic COI information empowers breeders to improve the long term health of their lines in a way that's impossible to do with pedigree data alone," said Adam Boyko, co-founder and chief science officer of Embark. "The owners and breeders involved in dog sports have long been supporters of canine health research, which makes announcing these preliminary findings at Westminster that much more empowering. We've already published several papers on genetic COI and genetic diversity in purebred dogs, and will be continuing to expand this research and build tools for breeders to support our shared goal of canine genetic health."

In addition to supporting responsible breeders, an Embark Dog DNA Test enables a mixed-breed dog owner to learn about their dog's breed ancestry, health, and more with a simple cheek swab. Through its research-grade DNA genotyping platform, Embark identifies more than 250 dog breeds in mixed-breed dogs and more than 170 genetic health conditions and traits in purebred and mixed breed dogs.

The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show takes place from Saturday, February 8, 2020 to Monday, February 10, 2020 in New York City, NY.

About EmbarkEmbark Veterinary, Inc. launched in 2015 with a mission to end preventable disease in dogs. An Embark Dog DNA Test enables pet owners to learn about their dog's breed, ancestry, health, and what diseases may be in the future all with a simple cheek swab. By using over twice as much genetic information than any other test available, the company offers the most accurate results on the market. Embark was started by two brothers, Adam and Ryan Boyko, who have a passion for scientific research and a lifelong love of dogs. Embark is an official research partner of Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine.

How to live longer: Do this much exercise each week to increase your life expectancy – Express

A vast body of evidence demonstrates that exercising regularly offers a bulwark against life-threatening complications, such as heart disease. The case for exercise could not be clearer but when it comes to how much you need to do to extend your lifespan, the jury is often out. Research is increasingly shedding light on this area, however, and one study shows that even a little exercise can go a long way.

The NHS recommends adults should do at least 150 minutes (two hours and 30 minutes) of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, such as cycling or fast walking, every week to reap the health benefits.

While the more exercise you do the better, according to findings published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, even partaking in 10 minutes of exercise a week a day can reduce your risk of developing life-threatening complications.

The study was based on data from more than 88,000 U.S. adults who participated in the National Health Interview Survey between 1997 and 2008. All of the participants were ages 40 to 85 and did not have any chronic diseases when they took the survey.

They also provided demographic and health information, and were tracked by researchers for about nine years.

READ MORE:How to live longer: This simple activity may increase your life expectancy

About 8,000 people died during the follow-up period, and the researchers found virtually any amount of exercise reduced the risk of dying of cardiovascular disease, cancer or any other cause.

What was particularly noteworthy is the study found participants who did just 10 to 59 minutes of light-to-moderate intensity physical activity each week had an 18 percent lower risk of early death than people who were sedentary.

The findings also revealed they also had a 12 percent lower risk of dying from cardiovascular issues during the study and a 14 percent lower risk of dying from cancer.

Whats more, these reductions in risk increased the more people exercised.

People who got 60 to 149 minutes of light-to-moderate exercise per week had a 22 percent lower risk of early death than sedentary people, and those who got 150 to 299 minutes had a 31 percent reduced risk.

In addition, those who engaged in 300 to 449 minutes of light-to-moderate physical activity per week was linked to a three percent lower risk of dying during the study period.

Out of all of the exercises available, aerobic exercise comes out on top for its myriad health benefits.

One of the primary health benefits of doing aerobic exercise is it helps keep visceral fat at bay.

Visceral fat is a harmful form of belly fat that lies close to internal organs and can trigger a range of deadly mechanisms in the body.

Emphasising the effectiveness of aerobic activity to attack visceral fat, many studies have shown that aerobic exercise can help you lose visceral fat, even without dieting.

For example, an analysis of 15 studies in 852 people compared how well different types of exercise reduced visceral fat without dieting.

They found moderate and high-intensity aerobic exercises were most effective at reducing visceral fat without dieting.

Aerobic exercise generally refers to any activity that gets your heart pumping and makes you breath faster than you normally would when resting.

Walking, jogging, biking, dancing, and swimming are popular examples of aerobic activity.

Of course, it is also important to compliment an exercise regime with a healthy, balanced diet too.

The NHS advises eating a low-fat, high-fibre diet, which should include plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables (five portions a day) and whole grains.

Doing this many push-ups reduces heart disease risk by 96% – Ladders

About 250,000 Americans die a year as a direct result of sedentary lifestyles.

The larger share of these deaths is more directly attributable to the development ofcardiovascular diseases. Many Americans lack either the time or the funds to commit to a gym membership which means fighting chronic inactivity begins with affordable ways to maintain physical fitness.

Thankfully, a study published in the JAMA Network Open recently became the first to identify push-up capacity as a preemptive correlate of poor heart health.

More discreetly, the researchers from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Healthposited that middle-aged men who can complete 40 push-ups or more in a single try evidence a reduced risk of developing deadly cardiovascular diseases compared to individuals who can complete no more than ten push-ups in a single try.

Our findings provide evidence that push-up capacity could be an easy, no-cost method to help assess cardiovascular disease risk in almost any setting. Surprisingly, push-up capacity was more strongly associated with cardiovascular disease risk than the results of submaximal treadmill tests, explained the studys first authorJustin Yang, occupational medicine resident in theDepartment of Environmental Healthat Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Push-up capacity is a no-cost, fast, and simple measure that may be a useful and objective clinical assessment tool for evaluating functional capacity and cardiovascular disease risk

There are several aspects of physical fitness that can be instructive for subsequent heart disease outcomes.

Calisthenics and resistance training are great waysto decrease blood pressure and stress put upon the heart. When performed correctly habitually doing push-ups can achieve the aforementioned benefits and even provide a dependable measure of an individuals longevity.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of mortality worldwide. Robust evidence indicates an association of increased physical fitness with a lower risk of CVD events and improved longevity; however, few have studied simple, low-cost measures of functional status, the authors wrote in the report.

In order to determine the most effective and affordable methods of maintaining fitness, the researchers beganby reviewing health data from 1,104 male firefighters recorded annually between the years of 2000 and 2010. The average age of the participants was 39 and the median body-mass-index was about 28.7

Each participant was instructed to perform as many push-ups as they could in a single-try. These trials persisted over the course of ten years.

By the end of the study period, 37 participants developed a heart disease related condition 36 of these firefighters were not able to complete 40 push-ups in the initial trial. Although the researchers additionally tested treadmill endurance no discernible association was established between these demonstrations and the development of cardiovascular diseases.

More trials need to be done to determine if these outcomes could be replicated in women, younger men, and subjects who are less active than the firefighters involved in the study.

To perform a proper push-up make sure that your hands are shoulder-width apart or wider, your elbows are at a 45-degree angle as you bend towards the ground, and that your fingers are spread, with your middle finger pointing towards 12 oclock.

Push-up capacity is a no-cost, fast, and simple measure that may be a useful and objective clinical assessment tool for evaluating functional capacity and cardiovascular disease risk.

The new study was co-authored by JustinYang,MD, Costas A.Christophi,PhD andAndreaFarioli,MD, PhD and can be read in full in the JAMA Network Open.

Mints as medicine and prayers instead of chemo – how sex pest Berland conned the weak – Ynetnews

Rabbi Eliezer Berland and his suspected co-conspirators are suspected of conning more than 200 victims, including disabled people who were promised they would be able to walk again and patients given "miracle cures" that were really Mentos candies.

Months of investigation led to the predawn arrests of Rabbi Eliezer Berland, his wife and five major fundraisers for his yeshiva. Berland has a previously served a 10-month sentence for sexually abusing his female acolytes.

(Photo: Ohad Zwigenberg)

All seven people arrested in Jerusalem on Sunday morning are suspected of receiving money through fraud, extortion and money laundering. During the arrests, supporters of the rabbi hurled stones at the arresting officers, leaving two with minor head injuries. The rioters were dispersed with stun grenades.

According to the investigation, Berland charged a tariff for each boon he dispensed, in accordance with the severity of the supplicant's suffering.

Some people even took out loans or handed their property over to Berland in return for his blessings.

A relative of one of the people who turned to Berland complained to him that despite his blessing their relative had passed away. Berland responded by asking for more money to ensure that the departed relative "will rise first when the resurrection comes."

In some cases, the people who turned to Berland had incurable diseases. According to the police, predawn raid revealed dozens of boxes of drops and pills, which are believed to have been distributed as miracle cures.

Tests conducted by the police showed that some of the drops were in fact antibiotics; the police called the drugs given to Berland's supplicants "false god drugs." To date, testimonies have been gathered from 200 people believed to have been conned by Berland and his associates.

The arrests were welcomed by Nurit Ben Moshe, whose daughter Shoshi died of cancer after Berland banned her from receiving chemotherapy and promised her longevity in return for tens of thousands of shekels.

The arrest of the rabbi was a "bittersweet" moment, Ben Moshe told Ynet.

"I hope everyone pays the price for what they did," she said. "What goes on in that cult is just horrendous."

The late Shoshi Videra was told by Eliezer Berland not to accept chemotherapy for her cancer

Last year, Israeli TV revealed that the rabbi received thousands of shekels from Shoshi, and in return told her not to have the chemotherapy she needed after a tumor in her gallbladder was removed in January 2019. Berland was documented taking the money and promising her a long life in return.

Shoshi underwent a successful operation, but Berland ordered her to refrain from receiving the supplementary treatments. Her mother was torn between the desire to please her daughter and pay the money demanded by the rabbi, and the knowledge that it was extortion that threatened her daughter's life. Finally, she raised the funds demanded by the rabbi.

Ben Moshe said: "This cult needs to be disbanded, it is cruel. Berland asked my son-in-law [one of his followers NF] to stop me from seeing my grandchildren. That's all I have left of my darling girl and they know how I connected I am to the children. These kids are my life and they wanted to get revenge on me because I sued their rabbi, Berland. His gurus simply decided that I could only see my grandchildren for an hour each month. Now I'm waging war."

She added: "Our story opened Pandora's box for the cult, which led to the arrests. Our story is difficult and we have still not heard the end of it. There are other shocking stories that I will soon be coming out with, so people can hear what a cult [the yeshiva] is. There are many more victims, my daughter is not the only one."

Eliezer Berland and his followers

(Photo: Ariela Sternbach)

According to the police, "Berland's organization was managed in a very sophisticated way that makes it difficult to find the evidence."

Over the past two years, the Jerusalem District Police has investigated dozens of cases of alleged violence by Berland's followers, who are battling the Braslav Hasidic movement for more status and power.

Dozens of cases and dozens of suspects were investigated for felony, fraud, and violence.

Chief Superintendent Doron Ben-Amo said: "Dozens of investigators from the Jerusalem District, the Tax Authority and the National Insurance Institute participated in the investigation. The investigative team worked covertly and managed to acquire documents and evidence on a very large scale. This morning we entered the visible stage and arrested seven suspects. During the searches, cash was also seized, and we now begin the open phase of the investigation. "

Regarding the rabbi himself, Ben-Amo said: "According to suspicions, the central suspect used multiple methods, and his associates dispensed blessings for recovery and promises of health, finding a partner and more. There was a fee defined by the severity of an illness, and there were those who handed over property worth hundreds of thousands of shekels.

They targeted hundreds of innocent people who were brutally and cynically exploited in a time of distress. We have more than 200 victims and expect there will be more. They lured in patients with false promises, pledged to free people from detention centers and vowed that the disabled would be able to walk again."

Pilates: 9 Longevity Benefits of This Physical Workout – Longevity LIVE

In the 1920s, Joseph Pilates created a now extremely popular form of exercise. He came up with a series of movements that not only incorporated stretching but also encouraged the body to build muscle. He coined the fitness approach after himself, calling it Pilates and it wasnt long before this unique workout grew in popularity over the years, with over 10 million active practitioners.

While Pilates shares some similarities with yoga, particularly the emphasis on the mind-body connection, Pilates places stronger importance on balance, flexibility as well as muscle toning. In fact, Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise that uses various apparatus that not only provides a unique workout, but it also provides a number of health benefits that are sure to boost your longevity.

The hippocampus is the part of the brain responsible for memory and cognitive function. Unfortunately, beginning in our late 20s, we begin to lose at least 1% of the volume of the hippocampus. Thankfully, research has discovered that our brains can create new cells thus slowing down, and possibly reversing, brain shrinkage. So whats one way to do this? Leading an active lifestyle. Doing so wont only help to protect your IQ, but it may also reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimers.

For instance, research published in the reported in the Journal of Physical Activity & Health found superior brain function in a group of people after they had practiced Pilates or yoga when compared to aerobic exercise. Additionally, a separate Chinese study found a cognitive increase in people after 10 weeks of Pilates training.

Yes, a strong core can help to achieve those sculptured abs that so many of us crave, but theres more to it than that. In fact, as core muscles are the center of the body, a strong core can help to maintain function, balance as well as stability. A strong core can also mean less strain on the neck and shoulders.

Unlike a traditional crunch, being a full-body workout, Pilates helps to more effectively strengthen your abdominal muscles. In fact, research published in the Musculoskeletal Care journal found that doing a Pilates routine over a period of 12 weeks helps to boost core strength.

Around 80% of adults will experience low back pain at some point in their lifetimes. Yet it seems that a low-impact class may help to address the discomfort. This is because, as mentioned, Pilates strengthens the core muscles and this helps to support the back, and encourage proper alignment.

According to a case study from the NHS, after visiting 50 specialists, a woman suffering from back pain went on to discover that Pilates was the one thing that helped to cure her ailment. Another study, found in the Journal of Orthopedic & Sports Physical Therapy, revealed that a Pilates program provided significant pain relief after a 12-month period.

Attending a Pilates class may help to fix that poor posture that you get from slouching at your desk all day. Did you know that poor posture can eventually cause backache, neck ache, as well as headaches? Whats more, its also been linked to depression (1).

Thankfully, Pilates can help to prevent all of these issues by fixing your posture. This is because it focuses on your core muscles, which strengthens your back, and it encourages proper alignment and posture.

Flexibility is less about how well you can do the splits and touch your toes, and more about your ability to move. Unfortunately, we lose our flexibility as we age so its important to engage in activity that will help to improve it.

Pilates encourages stretching, and this can help to enhance ones flexibility. For instance, research published in the Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness noted an improvement in flexibility in participants after an 8-week Pilates routine.

If youre looking to better manage your weight this year, then look no further than a Pilates class.

For one, Pilates helps to create stronger muscles as well as a much leaner look. That said, the fitness approach may also encourage some forms of weight loss. According to a study published in the Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness, a group of overweight women, who were living a sedentary lifestyle, practiced Pilates three times a week for eight weeks, and they lost weight and inches in their waist.

The movements may not seem as intense as your average cardio workout, but Pilates definitely has some fat-burning capabilities.

If youre having trouble sleeping, then maybe you should make Pilates part of your bedtime routine.

Pilates has a calming influence on your mind, and thats often what we need when were struggling to get some shuteye. In fact, a study presented at a SLEEP Conference found that people were less likely to battle sleeping issues if they walked, ran or practiced Pilates.

Pilates not only stretches and strengthens the core muscles, but it also does the same for your diaphragm, allowing for deeper breaths. Deeper breathing allows for a boost in both your lung capacity and strength. This also means improved blood circulation, which boosts your bodys functionality.

As mentioned, Pilates places a strong emphasis on the mind-body connection, and this then serves to increase self-awareness. This self-awareness allows us to identify issues at a much quicker rate, resulting in us not only recognizing the issue at hand but also addressing it.

This can range from small muscle aches to joint pain, to even something more mental. Pilates will help train you to be more aware of these issues so that you can address them as soon as possible.

In addition to the aforementioned benefits, Pilates can also help to strengthen your pelvic floor which can do wonders for your sex life. In fact, as it is the month of love, here are a few yoga poses that you can adopt to boost your sex life.

Pilates: 9 Longevity Benefits of This Physical Workout - Longevity LIVE

Americans live shorter lives, but spend more on health care – Plumas County Newspapers

When we look at the things we try to avoid in life, you would hope that escaping premature death would be top of the list. After all, it speaks to our basic human drive for survival.

Yet, in our modern world, preventable risks posed by smoking, unhealthy diets and drug use contribute mightily to diseases and, ultimately, premature death. These risk factors have led to a decrease in life expectancy.

There is now at least some reason for hope. As recently reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, for the first time since 2014, death rates in the U.S. declined, and life expectancy showed a modest uptick.

According to its findings, life expectancy at birth in 2018 was 78.7 years, which is 0.1 year longer than the previous year. It may not seem like much, but in a nation of approximately 350 million people, the upturn in longevity reflects improvements in the lives of many Americans.

The recent progress was driven by decreases in death rates from six of the 10 leading causes of death. As reported by NPR, in a continuation of an ongoing downward trend since the 1990s, there was a 2.2 percent decrease in cancer deaths. The numbers also show a 2.8 percent fall in deaths from unintentional injuries, which include drug overdoses.

According to Kathryn McHugh, a psychologist at McLean Psychiatric Hospital and Harvard University, this represents the first positive change seen in a 20-year-long trend of drug overdose deaths. I think these numbers suggest that some positive news is starting to come out of the many efforts to try to stem the tide on overdoses, McHugh tells NPR.

Some health experts advise receiving the news, which is based on a single year-to-year change, with cautious optimism. Despite the decline in overdose deaths, the governments National Center for Health Statistics shows more than 67,000 people still died from drug overdoses in 2018. During this same one-year period, the U.S. also saw an increase in suicide and flu death rates.

It was also noted that the use of a combination of drugs has increased over time, which experts see as a disturbing trend that could lead to what they refer to as the fourth wave of the opioid crisis. According to the new report, the rate of deaths involving synthetic opioids such as fentanyl (excluding methadone) increased by 10 percent between 2017 and 2018. In addition, from 2012 to 2018, death rates involving cocaine increased threefold.

At the same time, a report by the Commonwealth Fund found that Americans are twice as likely than people living in most other wealthy countries to be hospitalized for hypertension or diabetes, two diseases associated with obesity.

As noted by Steven Woolf, director emeritus of the Center on Society and Health at Virginia Commonwealth University, in an NBC report, the fact that almost 40 percent of Americans are obese contributes to the U.S. falling behind other countries.

Compared to other wealthy countries such as Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, the U.S. continues to trail behind when it comes to life expectancy. This, it is feared, illustrates a larger societal problem.

The Commonwealth Fund report also found that despite living shorter lives, Americans spend nearly two times more on health care than any other high-income country.

Policymakers must recognize that the decisions theyre making about jobs, education and infrastructure investments are health policies and have consequences not only to pocketbooks but to life expectancy, Woolf tells NBC News.

Theres a large amount of social, economic, spiritual despair in this country, Dr. Daniel Ciccarone, a professor of medicine and an addiction researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, tells NPR. He goes on to say that addressing that despair will be key to preventing more people from turning to drugs in the first place.

A glimmer of hope in the statistics can be found in the sharp decline in the number of cigarette smokers in the past four decades and its positive impact on smoking-related deaths including cancer and respiratory disease.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, quitting smoking before turning 40 reduces a persons risk of dying from smoking-related disease by about 90 percent.

Advances in cancer treatments and early screening are also positive influences on U.S. life expectancy.

In the end, the fact that American infants are projected to live longer than they would have in 2017 is a victory, the NBC News report notes.

People should be encouraged but still understand that there is something fundamentally wrong with our health pattern in the U.S., Woolf concludes. When you look at this longer-term trend over the past few decades, its clear that we need to make some fundamental changes in the way we approach life in America if were going to sustain this decrease.

Googles Machine Learning Is Making You More Effective In 2020 – Forbes

The collection of web-based software that Google offers to businesses and consumers is officially known as G Suite. Most people are familiar with Gmail and Google Docs, but quite a few do not realize that they offer a whole range of productivity and collaboration tools via your computer or mobile device.

HONG KONG, HONG KONG - November 27: A woman using an Macbook Pro as she uses Google G Suite on ... [+] November 27, 2017 in Hong Kong, Hong Kong. (Photo by studioEAST/Getty Images)

I have been working on another post about consumer-level uses of artificial intelligence (AI), not the media-hyped creepiness, but the practical, useful ways that AI is helping us do more and be more. Google started me thinking about this as I have watched it add various smart functions (think AI) to email as well as increasing ways to help me complete or enhance a document, spreadsheet, or presentation with the Explore function. It keeps learning from you and adjusting to you with these features.

Draft and send email responses quicker: Two relatively new, intelligent features include Smart Compose and Smart Reply. Gmail will suggest ways to complete your sentences while drafting an email and suggest responses to incoming messages as one-click buttons (at the bottom of the newly received message). This works in relatively simple messages that are calling for answers like these:

Enable Smart Compose and Smart Reply by going to Settings (that little gear icon in the upper right of your email inbox). Smart Reply is automatically enabled when users switch to the new Gmail.

On mobile and desktop or web, Smart Reply utilizes machine learning to give you better responses the more you use it. So if you're more of a thanks! than a thanks. person, itll suggest the response that is more authentic to you. Subtle difference, for sure, but I have noticed with certain people I interact with, the punctuation does change to show more emotion. I have not seen any emojis popping up, however. That may be a good thing.

For some of the newest features, you must go to Settings, then click Experimental Access. Features that are under test have a special little chemistry bottle icon or emoji. Most of the features in this post have already been fully tested and released to the general public.

Auto-reminders to respond: Gmails new Nudging function reportedly will now automatically bump both incoming and outgoing messages to the top of your inbox after a few days if neither party has responded. You can turn this feature on/off in Settings. However, I have not had this work properly, but maybe I am simply too efficient. Not. Either way, I have not noticed these reminders yet.

Machine Learning in Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides

The Explore button in the lower right corner of Docs, Sheets, or Slides is machine learning (ML) in action. You can visualize data in Sheets without using a formula. The explore button is a compass-looking type star and as you hover over it, it expands. Once clicked, it serves as a search tool within these products.

Explore and visualize in Sheets to help you decipher data easily by asking Explore with words, not formulas to get answer about your data. You can ask it a question like, how many units were sold on Black Friday, or what is my best selling product? or how much was spent on payroll last month, can be asked directly instead of creating formulas to get an answer. Explore in Sheets is available on the web, Android and iOS. On Android, you click the three vertical dots to get to the menu and then Explore is listed. When you first click it, it offers a try an example option and creates a new spreadsheet showcasing various examples.

Explore in Docs gives you a way to stay focused in the same tab. Using Explore, you get a little sidebar with Web, Images, and Drive results. It provides instant suggestions based on the content in your document including related topics to learn about, images to insert, or more content to check out in Docs. You can also find a related document from Drive or search Google right within Explore. Explore in Docs is available in a web browser, but I did not find it on my mobile apps for Android or iOS.

Explore in Slides makes designing a presentation simple. I think theres some AI/ML going on here, as Explore dynamically generates design suggestions, based on the content of your slides. Then, pick a recommendation and apply it with a single click, without having to crop, resize or reformat.

Are all of these features going to single-handedly make you the most productive person on the planet? No, but they are definitely small and constant improvements that point the way to a more customized and helpful use of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

If you are looking for other creative ways that people and organizations are using G Suite, there are tons of great customer stories that Google shares about how big and small organizations and companies use its free and enterprise-level products that may give you ideas for how you can leverage their cloud software. I find many of these case studies inspiring, but that is based on how organizations are responding to community needs.

Check out this one from Eagle County, Colorado during a wildfire there and this one from the City of Los Angeles with a real-time sheet to show police officers which homeless shelters have available beds.

Fiddler Labs, SRI and Berkeley experts open up the black box of machine learning at TC Sessions: Robotics+AI – TechCrunch

As AI permeates the home, work, and public life, its increasingly important to be able to understand why and how it makes its decisions. Explainable AI isnt just a matter of hitting a switch, though; Experts from UC Berkeley, SRI, and Fiddler Labs will discuss how we should go about it on stage at TC Sessions: Robotics+AI on March 3.

What does explainability really mean? Do we need to start from scratch? How do we avoid exposing proprietary data and methods? Will there be a performance hit? Whose responsibility will it be, and who will ensure it is done properly?

On our panel addressing these questions and more will be two experts, one each from academia and private industry.

Trevor Darrell is a professor at Berkeleys Computer Science department who helps lead many of the universitys AI-related labs and projects, especially those concerned with the next generation of smart transportation. His research group focuses on perception and human-AI interaction, and he previously led a computer vision group at MIT.

Krishna Gade has passed in his time through Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter and Microsoft, and has seen firsthand how AI is developed privately and how biases and flawed processes can lead to troubling results. He co-founded Fiddler as an effort to address problems of fairness and transparency by providing an explainable AI framework for enterprise.

Moderating and taking part in the discussion will be SRI Internationals Karen Myers, director of the research outfits Artificial Intelligence Center and an AI developer herself focused on collaboration, automation, and multi-agent systems.
