Natalizumab Linked to Disability Improvement in Early Relapsing-Remitting MS – Neurology Advisor

WEST PALM BEACH, FL More patients with early relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) treated with natalizumab experienced confirmed disability improvement than confirmed disability worsening, with the majority of improvement occurring in the first year and most patients maintaining confirmed disability improvement through the end of a 4-year study, according to research presented at the 5th annual Americas Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ACTRIMS) Forum 2020, held February 27-29 in West Palm Beach, Florida.

This 4-year, multicenter, observational, open-label, single-arm study of patients initiating natalizumab therapy <3 years postdiagnosis of RRMS (STRIVE), was designed to evaluate disability improvement over 4 years of treatment. Confirmed disability improvement was defined as a >1.0 decrease in Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) score from a baseline score >2.0, confirmed after 24 weeks. Confirmed disability worsening was defined as a >0.5 increase in EDSS from a baseline score > 6.0, or a >1.0 increase from a baseline score of 1.0 to 5.5, or a >1.5 from a baseline score of 0.0, confirmed after 24 weeks.

Cumulative confirmed disability improvement or disability worsening probabilities were assessed with Kaplan-Meier methods. Confirmed disability improvement maintenance was defined by a continued EDSS reduction by >1 point. A multivariate spline-based accelerated failure time model was used to evaluate baseline characteristics (age, multiple sclerosis disease duration, EDSS score, T2 lesion volume, number of gadolinium-enhancing lesions, and relapses in the prior year) as confirmed disability improvement predictors.

A total of 222 participants were included in the intent-to-treat population, of whom 133 had a baseline EDSS score of >2.0. During the 4-year study, 32.3% of participants with such an EDSS score experienced confirmed disability improvement; 62.8% had an EDSS score reduction of >1.5, and 44.2% had a reduction of >2.0 points. The cumulative probability of confirmed disability improvement was 19.9% at 1 year, 28.4% at 2 years, 38.5% at 3 years, and 43.9% at 4 years.

Among those with confirmed disability improvement, 62.8% maintained improvement through all 4 years of the study. No baseline characteristics were found to be confirmed disability improvement predictors, and the cumulative confirmed disability worsening probability at 4 years was 19.3%.

The investigators concluded, In this analysis of patients treated with natalizumab in STRIVE, more patients experienced [confirmed disability improvement] than CDW. [Confirmed disability improvement] occurred during each year of the study with most improvement taking place in the first yearThese results are consistent with findings from other real-world studies and support the effectiveness of natalizumab in patients with early RRMS.

How the ‘OK, Boomer’ Comment Sparked Conversation on Managing Generational Differences – Gallup

Story Highlights

When Chle Swarbrick, an MP in New Zealand's Parliament, responded to a colleague's interruption of her speech with "Ok, boomer," media outlets around the world scrambled to explain Swarbrick's remark.

Many of them chastised Swarbrick for insulting baby boomers -- and were criticized in turn by their own audiences. "Ok, boomer" originated on social media platform TikTok to mock condescending closed-mindedness, not age.

The confusion around Swarbrick's comment confirms what leaders of a multigenerational workforce already know: Different generations in the workplace -- and there can be five in the same office -- have very different perspectives. Smoothing them over is a challenge.

Gallup analytics has a solution: Don't.

Instead, focus on your employees' most important differences.

Giving up on smoothing over has important implications. To begin with, those five generations really do expect different things from work.

As Gallup analytics shows, millennials are more likely than the previous generation to say that development opportunities and "quality of manager" are extremely important in a new job.

Millennial employees are dead serious about advancement, are motivated more by mission than money and want coaching, not bossing. Maybe that's not so different than what people of all generations really want but millennials' high quit rate shows they'll leave rather than accept the kind of management the baby boomer generation has tolerated.

That seems like a major generational difference -- and leaders should take it seriously -- but it's really small potatoes compared to the differences between employees' CliftonStrengths. A reflection of deep neurology, our CliftonStrengths influence the way we think, feel and behave, the way we see the world and react to it. That influence is orders of magnitude stronger than any generational characteristic. And each person's unique strengths explain -- and predict -- performance with such acuity that generational labels seem feeble by comparison.

A reflection of deep neurology, our CliftonStrengths influence the way we think, feel and behave, the way we see the world and react to it.

Managers make differences good. And effective.

When team members understand the way their brains work, the way they relate to each other changes. They can't claim Sharon's extreme productivity is due to her baby boomer work ethic (and neither can Sharon, for that matter) -- it's because Achiever is among her top five CliftonStrengths themes. Jason's aversion to forced ranking is not some kind of Gen Xer apathy -- it's because Competition is last on his CliftonStrengths profile. Intense Command, not the infamous "millennial entitlement," drives Taylor to take charge.

Knowing coworkers in this profoundly meaningful way doesn't make differences seem unimportant -- it makes differences seem even more important. It makes differences good.

A canny manager uses a team's understanding of these deep, intractable differences to bring people together: An employee who needs help hitting a deadline needs Sharon. Jason should be part of designing the onboarding routine. Taylor will rally the troops when a project is going to pieces. And even though Sharon thinks paycheck is purpose enough while Taylor feels work ought to have real meaning, high-Command Taylor may be Achiever-driven Sharon's saving grace when she isn't getting enough achieved.

Strengths' influence on behavior is orders of magnitude stronger than any generational characteristic. And strengths explain -- and predict -- performance with such acuity that generational labels seem feeble by comparison.

And if that canny manager coaches people to use their strengths deliberately, the team's performance can be extraordinary: On average, workgroups that receive strengths coaching have up to 19% increased sales, 29% increased profit, 7% higher customer engagement, 16% lower turnover (in low-turnover organizations), 72% lower turnover (in high-turnover organizations), a 15% increase in engagement and 59% fewer safety incidents than teams that don't receive strengths coaching.

Sure, generational expectations in the workplace are real and can have a real impact on your business. Leaders should not ignore them. But talents -- which define us on a profoundly meaningful level -- prove our differences are a thing to admire and use, not insult.

It's all a matter of approach.

Which brings us back to New Zealand. Insults aren't uncommon within its Parliament, and MPs often respond with more heat than Chle Swarbrick did. Nonetheless, Swarbrick got worldwide flak for her remark, which she responded to in a Guardian op-ed. "My 'OK, boomer' comment in Parliament was off the cuff, albeit symbolic of the collective exhaustion of multiple generations," she said, "set to inherit ever-amplifying problems in an ever-diminishing window of time."

Her eagerness to solve big problems is laudable, and likely why constituents voted for her. They may feel she's doing the right thing the right way.

But if she were your employee, you probably wouldn't. You might commend her zeal, you might be relieved that she noted "multiple generations." But you'd know that whatever "Ok, boomer" originally meant, it sounds like an insult. It sounds like prejudice.

Yes, people will always make presumptions about others. No, you can't change that. But you can change what people presume of each other. Indeed, you have the rare power to make people's presumptions accurate. CliftonStrengths gives it to you. Use it.

As the generational composition shifts within companies, the potential for miscommunication and misunderstanding grows. Things could get ugly. Or a lot better -- it depends on your approach.

Show people how they're really different, and you'll show them why they're valuable. Why everyone is valuable. That perspective is a lot more meaningful than demographics, and far better for your business.

Study Finds Picking up a Pingpong Paddle May Benefit People with Parkinson’s – Southernminn.com

MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 26, 2020 /PRNewswire/ --Pingpong may hold promise as a possible form of physical therapy for Parkinson's disease. People with Parkinson's who participated in a pingpong exercise program once a week for six months showed improvement in their Parkinson's symptoms, according to a preliminary study released today that will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology's 72nd Annual Meeting in Toronto, Canada, April 25 to May 1, 2020.

Parkinson's disease is a movement disorder in which a chemical in the brain called dopamine is gradually reduced. This process results in slowly worsening symptoms that include tremor, stiff limbs, slowed movements, impaired posture, walking problems, poor balance and speech changes.

"Pingpong, which is also called table tennis, is a form of aerobic exercise that has been shown in the general population to improve hand-eye coordination, sharpen reflexes, and stimulate the brain," said study author Ken-ichi Inoue, M.D., of Fukuoka University in Fukuoka, Japan. "We wanted to examine if people with Parkinson's disease would see similar benefits that may in turn reduce some of their symptoms."

The study involved 12 people with an average age of 73 with mild to moderate Parkinson's disease. The people had been diagnosed with Parkinson's for an average of seven years.

The people were tested at the start of the study to see which symptoms they had and how severe the symptoms were.

Participants then played pingpong once a week for six months. During each weekly five-hour session, they performed stretching exercises followed by table tennis exercises with instruction from an experienced table tennis player. The program was developed specifically for Parkinson's disease patients by experienced table tennis players from the department of Sports Science of Fukuoka University.

Parkinson's symptoms were evaluated again after three months and at the end of the study.

The study found that at both three months and six months, study participants experienced significant improvements in speech, handwriting, getting dressed, getting out of bed and walking. For example, it took participants an average of more than two attempts to get out of bed at the beginning of the study compared to an average of one attempt at the end of the study.

Study participants also experienced significant improvements in facial expression, posture, rigidity, slowness of movement and hand tremors. For example, for neck muscle rigidity, researchers assessed symptoms and scored each participant on a scale of zero to four with a score of one representing minimal rigidity, two representing mild rigidity, three representing moderate rigidity and four representing severe rigidity. The average score for all participants at the start of the study was three compared to an average score of two at the end of the study.

Two participants experienced side effects. One person developed a backache and another person fell.

"While this study is small, the results are encouraging because they show pingpong, a relatively inexpensive form of therapy, may improve some symptoms of Parkinson's disease," said Inoue. "A much larger study is now being planned to confirm these findings."

The main limitation of the study was that the participants were not compared to a control group of people with Parkinson's disease who did not play pingpong. Another limitation was that a single specialist assessed the patients.

New Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis Therapies More Effective Than Injectables – Neurology Advisor

WEST PALM BEACH, FL Using newer disease-modifying therapies for the initial treatment of pediatric multiple sclerosis may be more effective than injectables at controlling disease activity, according to study results presented at the 2020 Forum for Americas Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis held February 27-29, 2020, in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Most disease-modifying therapies used in the treatment of multiple sclerosis are not well studied in children; therefore, the treatment of multiple sclerosis in the pediatric population remains a challenge. The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of initial treatment with new disease-modifying therapies vs injectable therapies on disease activity in pediatric multiple sclerosis and clinically isolated syndrome.

Researchers examined demographic data and clinical outcomes of children with multiple sclerosis and clinically isolated syndrome who received initial therapy with new disease-modifying therapies (such as fingolimod, dimethyl fumarate, and rituximab) or injectable disease-modifying therapies (interferon beta or glatiramer acetate). They used logistic regression to compute propensity score that could be used to predict use of new therapies, including preidentified confounders such as gender, race, age at onset, and relapse count within 6 months. Relapse rate after prescription of initial therapy and time to new or enlarging brain lesions were adjusted for propensity scores-quintile.

Researchers found that 741 children started therapy before 18 years of age, 197 of whom received newer therapies and 544 of whom received injectable therapies. Patients who wer prescribed newer therapies tended to be older (15.2 years vs injectable at 14.4 years; P =.001) and less likely to have a monofocal presentation (37% vs injectable 55%; P <.001). Patients who were prescribed newer therapies had a lower number of relapses in the past 6 months compared with those who were prescribed injectables (0.8 vs 1.0), as well as lower rates of new or enlarging T2 brain lesions (hazard ratio, [HR] 0.51; 95% CI, 0.36-0.72; P <.001) and gadolinium-enhancing brain lesions (HR, 0.38; 95% CI, 0.23-0.63; P <.001).

The researchers concluded that in pediatric multiple sclerosis and clinically isolated syndrome, treatment with newer disease-modifying therapies could be more effective in controlling disease activity than injectable therapies.

Pregnancy Linked to Later Onset of Progressive MS – Medscape

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida Women who have no history of a full-term pregnancy show an earlier onset of progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) compared with those who have had pregnancies, and the apparent onset-delaying effect appears to increase with the number of pregnancies, new research suggests.

The results add to speculation on the effects of pregnancy in MS.

"Our results suggest that a higher number of full-term pregnancies than average is associated with later onset of progressive MS, while having no full-term pregnancies is associated with significantly younger age at progressive MS onset," first author Burcu Zeydan, MD, an assistant professor of radiology in the Center for MS and Autoimmune Neurology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, told Medscape Medical News.

The study was presented here at the 5th annual Americas Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ACTRIMS) Forum 2020.

The findings, which also link early menopause with faster disease progression, offer important insights into the broader effects of pregnancy on MS, commented ACTRIMS president Jeffrey A. Cohen, MD, who is the director of Experimental Therapeutics at the Mellen Center for MS Treatment and Research, Cleveland Clinic, Ohio.

"We know pregnancy affects the short term disease activity relapses tend to quiet down during pregnancy but what has been somewhat conflicting is whether it affects the long-term prognosis or is just a temporary effect," he told Medscape Medical News.

"So that is the main interest in this study, and it does indicate that pregnancy affects the long-term prognosis and provides some insight into the mechanism by which it might do that."

While being female is in fact considered the most important risk factor for MS susceptibility, pregnancy has been suggested to have a protective role in disease progression. However, more research is needed on the nature of the effect and its mechanisms.

For this study, Zeydan and colleagues evaluated data on 202 patients (134 women, 68 men) with MS who were part of a Mayo Clinic survey.

They found that women who had no full-term pregnancies (n = 32), had an earlier onset of progressive MS (mean age 41.4 12.6 years) compared with women giving birth to one or more children (n = 95; 47.1 9.7 years; P = .012).

In addition, the mean age of progressive MS onset increased with a dose-effect trend according to the number of full pregnancies (no children, 41.4 12.6 years; 1-3 children: 46.4 9.2 years; 4 or more children: 52.6 12.9 years; P = .002).

A look at a subgroup of patients with secondary progressive MS also showed an earlier mean age of onset among women who had no full pregnancies(n = 19; 41.5 9.2 years) compared with women who had one or more full pregnancies (n = 57; 47.3 10.6 years; P = .049).

The later disease onset associated with pregnancy was also seen in relapsing-remitting MS: Mean age of onset was earlier women with no pregnancies (27.5 7.0 years) compared with those with one or more children (33.0 9.4 years;P = .021).

The mean duration of time from relapsing-remitting MS to secondary progressive MS was also shorter among women with premature or early menopause (n = 26; 12.9 9.0 years) compared with those who had menopause at a normal age (n = 39; 17.8 10.3 years).

The pattern was similar for women experiencing the onset of secondary progressive MS after menopause, with a shorter progression among those with early menopause (P = .012).

The trends of later onset with more pregnancies was also observed with the mean age of onset of secondary progressive MS (no full pregnancies: onset at 41.5 9.2 years; 1-3 pregnancies: onset 46.2 9.9 years; 4 or more pregnancies: onset 52.6 12.9 years; P = .010).

And likewise, the later mean age of onset of relapsing-remitting MS was seen with additional pregnancies (no full pregnancies: 27.5 7.0 years; 1-3 pregnancies: 32.4 9.3 years; 4 or more pregnancies: 35.8 9.8 years;P = .012).

"The dose effect was clearly a surprise (having no full-term pregnancies vs 1-3 vs 4 or more)," Zeydan said.

"In addition to the significant difference between having no vs 1 or more full-term pregnancies, the clear dose-effect consolidates our results related to the association between the number of pregnancies and age at progressive MS onset."

The study also showed that women with premature or early menopause had a shorter duration of progression from relapsing-remitting MS to secondary progressive MS (n = 26; 12.9 9.0 years) compared with women who experienced menopause at a normal age (n = 39; 17.8 10.3 years).

The patterns in early menopause are consistent with previous observations regarding menopause and MS progression, Cohen said.

"When women go through menopause, estradiol and pregnancy-related factors further decline and we know this coincides temporally with the development of progressive MS in women," he noted.

Compared with men, women with premature or early menopause furthermore had a longer duration from relapsing-remitting MS to secondary progressive MS (P = .008), and women with secondary progressive MS also had also had an earlier age of relapsing-remitting MS onset than men (P = .018).

The mechanisms of pregnancy could include a complex interaction between estrogen and factors such as astrocyte and microglia function, Zeydan explained.

"Estrogen, through various mechanisms of eliminating toxicity of highly activated neurons including preventing pro-inflammatory molecule release, supporting mitochondria function thereby eliminating energy failure, and promoting remyelination helps neuronal plasticity and delays neurodegeneration, which is closely related to the progressive phase of MS," she said.

"One could easily make the probable association, while yet to be proven, that our findings may relate to these mechanisms," Zeydan said.

The logical question of whether hormone replacement or some type of therapy that could mimic the effects of pregnancy could also benefit in delaying MS onset remain to be seen, Zeydan said.

"While we believe that is possible, particularly for delaying the onset of progressive phase, definitive evidence is lacking at this time," Zeydan said. "However, our study ultimately may lead to such a trial."

In the meantime, the findings provide additional insights that may be beneficial in sharing with patients regarding pregnancy, she said.

"As the contemporary problem in MS care is to delay or prevent progressive MS onset, our findings may suggest that how we counsel women with MS who are planning to get pregnant, or contemplating surgically induced menopause, or how we consider hormone therapies during perimenopause, may impact the course of their disease."

Zeydan cautions, however, that "our findings do not confirm causality beyond an association."

"More studies are needed in this important issue in a disease that affects women three times more than men," she stressed.

Zeydan has disclosed no relevant financial relationships. Cohen reports personal compensation for consulting for Adamas, Convelo, MedDay, Mylan, and Population Council; and serving as an editor of Multiple Sclerosis Journal.

The Impact of Weight Loss on Migraine Characteristics in Patients With Obesity – Neurology Advisor

Among patients with obesity and migraine, surgical or behavioral weight loss is associated with reduction of migraine frequency, pain severity, attack duration, and disability, according to a new meta-analysis published in Obesity Surgery.

Previous studies have shown that obesity is associated with increased migraine risk and might contribute to more frequent and severe migraine attacks among those with pre-existing migraine. Several studies have suggested that weight loss may have a beneficial effect on migraine. The goal of the current meta-analysis was to assess whether any benefit of weight loss on migraine is correlated with the degree of weight change and if different weight reduction strategies may elicit different effects.

The researchers searched the MEDLINE/PubMed, ISI-Web of Knowledge, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases from 2000 to the end of 2018 and screened 98 records, of which 90 were excluded and 8 articles, corresponding to 10 primary studies (473 patients), were included in the meta-analysis. The outcomes measured included headache frequency (10 studies), pain severity (6 studies), disability (4 studies), and attack duration (6 studies).

Weight loss was associated with a significant reduction in headache frequency (effect size [ES] -0.78; 95% CI, -1.13 to -0.43, P <.00001), pain severity (ES -1.04; 95% CI, -1.49 to -0.59, P <.0001), and headache disability (ES -0.68; 95% CI, -0.96 to -0.41, P <.0001), and there was a small but significant reduction in headache duration (ES -0.25, 95% CI, -0.45 to -0.04, P =.017).

Improvement in migraine was not correlated to either the degree of obesity at baseline or the degree of weight reduction.

There was no difference between bariatric and behavioral approaches for weight loss on headache frequency, pain severity, or headache disability. However, the effect of weight loss on headache duration was significant only for surgical weight loss and not for the behavioral approach.

The beneficial effects of weight loss on headache frequency and disability were similar in adult and pediatric populations, but the impact on attack duration was limited to the adult population.

The researchers acknowledged several limitations of the study, including the relatively small number of studies and patients, lack of control group in most studies, and no data on changes of circulating inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines, energy balance behaviors, and psychological symptoms.

This meta-analysis provides further evidence for the efficacy of weight loss as an important adjunctive treatment for individuals with migraine and obesity, concluded the study authors. They do, however, note that results showing similar benefit regardless of the weight loss method and amount of weight loss achieved justify additional research to determine mechanisms, beyond weight loss, that account for migraine improvements.

Caffeine helping to treat young patients in Sydney with neurological disorders – 7NEWS.com.au

Sydneys Childrens Hospital at Westmead has stumbled upon a remarkable treatment for a group of young patients with a rare neurological disorder.

Its easy to source, perfectly safe and cheap. In fact, most of us already consume it every day in our cup of coffee.

Put simply its caffeine - and its helping patients like four-year-old Grace Maly.

At around four-months-old, a virus lead to a sudden change in Graces development.

Her mother Emma describes how she went floppy.

Emma says, We knew something wasnt right because she couldnt sit up. She wasnt reaching her milestones.

At first, it was a mystery but after years of searching, Grace was diagnosed with a mutation in the ADCY5 gene. A movement disorder prevents her from independently sitting or standing.

Emma says, ever since life has been very different. Its been very up and down. An emotional roller coaster.

More on 7NEWS.com.au

One of hardest impacts is seizures, up to 10 times a day.

Until, the family heard about an unlikely new treatment - caffeine.

Grace takes three doses of prescription caffeine each day and her father Adam describes the results as amazing.

We knew something wasnt right because she couldnt sit up. She wasnt reaching her milestones.

Grace can now feed herself a sandwich by herself. Play Duplo with her brothers. So its really wonderful.

Other families are benefiting too under supervision at The Childrens Hospital at Westmead.

Dr Shekeeb Mohammad says this is what medical professionals dream about, It is immensely satisfying and it is thrilling to be able to see a change in our patients.

Previously, physical therapy has been the only other form of treatment.

The caffeine therapy was in fact an accidental discovery made in France.

A patient there with the condition stopped drinking his usual daily coffee and his symptoms suddenly became far worse.

Older patients like Francesca Risi have followed his lead, drinking straight espresso.

Her mother Angelina says Its amazing for us to see that something so simple can help her put her hand up in class in time to answer a question.

Francescas father Adrian says he just wants his daughter to live a happy life, It gives us probably hope that there are more and more things to be discovered.

Exactly why the caffeine works is still a mystery.

So today, on Rare Diseases Day, the families are sharing their stories, hoping for more answers and maybe one day a cure.

Measures of iron in the brain might eventually predict dementia inpatients withParkinsons disease (PD), according to the findings of astudy publishedin theJournal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry. In this study, the researchers analyzed 100 patients with early-to-mid stage PD along with 37 age-matched controls using an algorithm for assessing cognitive decline risk in PD. Subsequent to analysis, the results showed that iron accumulation in the hippocampus and thalamus brain regions are associated with poor memory and thinking scores in patients with PD. First author, PhD student George Thomas (UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology), added that: Its really promising to see measures like this which can potentially track the varying progression of Parkinsons disease, as it could help clinicians devise better treatment plans for people based on how their condition manifests.

Art Anatomy – Welcome

Hi, I'm Franklin Einspruch. Welcome to Art Anatomy. Get started here, or read on.

I'm an artist and writer, and I've had a two-decade career in teaching at the university level, spanning a wide range of topics from traditional art to web development. (I believe that I'm unique in having taught college courses in both Renaissance painting methods and MySQL.) That combined knowledge brings this book to you.

I spent many of those years teaching figure drawing, including anatomy for figure drawing. Anatomy is a hard topic for art students, who often find the technical language and necessity for memorization off-putting. This is understandableif they were comfortable with that sort of thing, they likely would have gone into another field. But as such, I've never been entirely satisfied with the available books on the topic. Most of them are too comprehensive, don't help enough with the terminology, and don't go far enough into the why of anatomy. So you can locate the medial epicondyle of the humerus on the figure by sight; what do you do with that?

This book, in contrast, is a minimalist introduction to anatomy, written with the artist in mind, and written with the artist's mind in mind. I concentrate exclusively on forms that can be seen on the surface, rendering the medical language plain, and I discuss at length how to use an understanding of anatomy to draw better. Ask the Expert: Anatomy of a heart surgery how to prepare – The Star Press

Heart surgery of any kind can be scary and the decision to undergo one is not a decision to be taken lightly. After conversations with your doctor, it may become clear that heart surgery is the best option for you, so to help with any lingering anxiety about the upcoming procedure, it could help to have a lot of the facts up front. Lets dive in to some things you can expect with an upcoming surgery and some tips on how to make it easier on you.

What preliminary tests will they run?

Its important for your doctor to run a few tests to reduce any risks when it comes to the anesthesia given and how to manage your recovery after the surgery. You can expect to go in ahead of your surgery for the following tests:

Your doctor may require more tests than the ones listed above, but these are just a few common ones that you can expect.

MORE ASK THE EXPERT:Show your heart some love

What can I expect before the surgery?

Before the surgery, your surgeon will need a list of all the medications and herbal supplements you are currently taking along with their dosages. This is especially important if you are taking blood thinners (anticoagulants).

Depending on the medications or supplements you are taking, you may be asked by your surgeon to suspend their use before the surgery. Some common ones have different effects on bleeding and/or take various amounts of time to wear off. Your surgeon will give specific instructions on when to stop taking these medications/supplements before the surgery.

Even though its scary to think about, its important to talk with your family and loved ones about your wishes should the unthinkable happen. Appointing someone in your family to make decisions for you can also prove helpful, making sure they are aware of your medical history and any allergies you may have.

Lastly, your surgeon may give you some day before instructions like bathing with a specific skin prep scrub, what medications not to take and what foods/liquids to stay away from, if not altogether.

What can I expect after the surgery?

After your surgery, you will recover in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for as long as the surgeon deems necessary to receive additional, post-op care. After you are discharged, your recovery at home can take anywhere between fourand eightweeks. This is a standard amount of time, but everyone is different and your recovery time could take longer, based on multiple factors like age, the procedure done and your overall condition before surgery.

Even though you may feel fully recovered after a few weeks or months after your surgery, your journey does not stop there as your heart health is something you will have to monitor for the rest of your life.

Your doctor might also give you a list of exercises to do at home, or you may be signed up for a cardiac rehabilitation program to attend as your continued heart health is of utmost importance.

Any useful tips you can share for surgery preparation?

X-Men Anatomy: The 5 Weirdest Things About Wolverine’s Body, Explained – CBR – Comic Book Resources

When it comes to questions of anatomy, one would think thatWolverinewould be far more on the normal side as far as superheroes go. Whereas Superman is an alien from a whole other planet, or Spider-Man has arachnid characteristics, Wolverine is basically just a clawed Canadian who heals really well.

However, things aren't as simple as they seem. Once you start teasing out the logic behind Wolverine's anatomy there are some pretty disturbing (and gross) implications. Let's look at the five strangest aspects of Wolverine's anatomy that put the "ick" in "snikt."

RELATED:Wolverine: Logan's Old Alter Ego Will Face a New X-Men Threat

Naturally, any question about Wolverine's anatomy is going to address his metal bones. Laced with unbreakable adamantium by an experimental government procedure only possible with someone of Wolverine's immense regenerative capabilities, the adamantium skeleton may seem pretty straightforward at first. It makes Wolverine heavier than normal, protects him from greater damage than he otherwise could and all in all, proves a pretty handy tool time and again.

Since Wolverine can heal from almost any wound, his adamantium skeleton is on the front lines of keeping him in a fight so that the mutant can minimize the time it takes for him to recuperate. Bullets that would scramble his brains just bounce off his skull, and it takes far less time to heal the flesh on his head than the brain matter inside it. The value the metal adds to his claws is incalculable as well, allowing him to cut most anything while also preventing them from opponents crushing them. His skeleton may be sturdy and his claws naturally sharp all on their own, but there's just no competing with adamantium.

RELATED:New Mutants Just Set Up the X-Mens Identity Crisis

Wolverine is one of the hairiest mainstream superheroes to appear in films and comics. Whereas most heroes' physiques tend toward the lean and the hairless over time, something about Wolverine's animalistic connection allowed him to maintain a shaggy mane not many other heroes share. What many people might not realize is that the signature look comes part and parcel with his powers.

While Wolverine doesn't have the Rapunzel problem of perpetually growing infinite amounts of hair, his follicles do tend to regenerate to roughly the same length even after they are burned or torn off. Wolverine has walked away from third-degree burns across his entire body, and as the skin comes back the hair comes with it, always at roughly the same length.

RELATED:5 Things We Want From The New Wolverine Series (& 5 Things We Don't Want)

Part of the reason for the healing factor's application to his hair could come from its bestial origins -- in one comic it is explained that Wolverine is actually ahomo lupine rather than ahomo superior, putting his ancestral relatives closer to wolves than humans. Many other mutants with healing factors, like Sabretooth, grow a pretty thick mane themselves and this could be the common factor linking them.

While it's not normally easy to compete with the mainstream Wolverine when it comes to feats of sheer survival, the Ultimate iteration of the character from Marvel's 1610 universe gives Logan a run for his money. Ultimate Wolverine once survived a fight with the Hulk and S.H.I.E.L.D. detonating a nuclear weapon in the middle of their fray only to wake up in a lab where the organization was keeping his body parts separate. Nick Fury spoke with Wolverine's decapitated head and explained that they just couldn't kill it.

When S.H.I.E.L.D. separated Ultimate Wolverine's head from his body he simply started breathing oxygen through his skin, realizing that when they put it in an airless vacuum the skin started making its own air. A survivor through and through, Logan's sheer refusal to die may have been the reason Nick Fury just resigned to letting Wolverine go about his business.

RELATED:X-Men: Kitty Pryde Demonstrates a New Ability - and It's Intoxicating

A natural thing to wonder about Wolverine's healing factor is whether or not he can extend it to others. There's obviously a great amount of suffering in the world, and if the gritty hero with wanted to atone for his past sins,is it possible for him toliterally cure the world of its ills through blood transfusion?

Well, the situation has come up, but it's an insanely hard thing to pull off. InPowers of X, Wolverine was able to save Moira Mactaggart with blood transfusions, but the recentWolverine #1 provided an infographic that explained howLogan'shealing factor becomes inert within his blood once it leaves his body. Getting it to successful transmit to another body is an incredibly difficult task.

RELATED:Wolverine: A Deadly X-Men Villain Returns With a Dark New Mission

That's not to say it hasn't been done before. Most famously, Deadpool was a member of the same Weapon X program that produced Wolverine. Using Wolverine's blood, Weapon X was capable of reproducing his healing factor within Deadpool, but at a terrible cost. Deadpool's own lethal cancer fights a constant war against his healing factor, and the end result is that his skin became scabby and scarred. He may have a good sense of humor about it, but there's definitely a curse attached to that gift.

This is where things get a little sappy because we're not talking about his actual heart. Instead, it's worth explaining the toll Wolverine's healing factor has had on his mental and emotional health over the years. Since his senescence is so much slower than a normal human's, Wolverine has spent the past century watching many of the people around him die or get older while he has largely remained the same.

And that's to say nothing of the psychological horror of enduring the countless physical tortures inflicted upon him. Even just the process to coat Wolverine's skeleton in adamantium was described as immensely painful, and it's a process he has had to undergo multiple times. At one point Magneto even ripped the metal straight off his bones, no anesthetic or preparation at all. The process nearly killed him, and in fact, burned out his healing factor so that for a brief period he was mortal.

But underneath it all Wolverine has an indomitable will that never allows such constant suffering to get the best of him. While he certainly has his fair share of mental problems, part of what makes Wolverine such a hero is that he is able to undergo such severe physical and emotional pain over time without it ever truly changing who he is. As interesting as the anatomy of the X-Man is, at the center of it all is the heart of a truly great character.

Anatomy of an ass-kicking: Slippage started before the Thunder lost by 47 – The Athletic

MILWAUKEE The Bucks collegiate-esque fan section burst into an excited cheer deep into the fourth quarter. Count the bucket for Antetokounmpo, who rambled to the rim uncontested.

No, this wasnt Giannis Antetokounmpo. By the time his brother, the lesser-known Thanasis, walked in a layup in the fourth quarter, Giannis had laid waste to the Thunder in 27 minutes.

The only time Giannis came off the bench in the fourth was to show an official what he thought was an offensive foul on Thunder guard Terrance Ferguson. The reigning NBA Most Valuable Player wasnt needed in the final period. The Thunder didnt defend with the force necessary or stick to their offensive blueprint long enough to stay within striking distance for more than a quarter and a half.

We just got our ass kicked, Thunder center Steven Adams said.

A slight understatement from Adams.

This was a record-setting ass kicking.

Hi, Im Leigh Whannell. Im the writer and director of the film, The Invisible Man. A lot of the film deals with paranoia and whether or not Elisabeth Mosss character is really seeing something. And this is a scene where shes actually dealing with physical presence and a physical threat. We dont get to meet our antagonist, Adrian. You dont have to learn a lot about him as the film goes on. And so I wanted the threat to suddenly become very real. And I thought it would be an interesting way to shoot a scene like this where two people are fighting, but you can only see one of the participants. [RUNNING WATER] And I could see that in my minds eye. I could see what that would look like if we pulled it off well. Turns out it was quite hard to achieve. It took a while to get there, to get the thing on screen that I could see in my head when I was writing. But we got here, eventually. [LOUD NOISE] Theres obviously moments in this scene that Elisabeth Moss could not perform. Shes not a trained stunt performer. She cannot be thrown across a table. So then the question becomes, how do we shoot Elisabeth Moss and then cut to somebody else? So in the middle of the shot, we have to match frame a stunt person in. And then, so shell do the actual throw and shell get thrown, and then shell land, and we have to freeze her and then match frame Elisabeth back in. And it was very technically difficult when she was interacting with the stunt performer in a green suit and when she wasnt. Because as we found out when we did visual effects, its kind of easier to add something to a frame with CGI. Its hard to remove something, especially a human body in a bright green suit. Like if this person is moving and blocking the other actor, and what are we going to do with that moment where the stunt performers arm is blocking Elisabeths face. But I know that the visual effects guys, a company called Cutting Edge, in Sydney, had a lot of sleepless nights to get it looking amazing. [BREAKING DISH]

Anatomy of an effective e-commerce website – Herald Palladium

Setting up and managing an e-commerce website to sell your companys products involves a lot of work and knowledge of what might boost or bust your bottom line.

While specific features and functionality requirements may vary depending on your type of business, some considerations are universally important.

A few of the must-have characteristics of an e-commerce website include:

According to data from Custoras E-commerce Pulse, the share of mobile orders (phone and tablet) out of all e-commerce increased to 31 percent in 2016 (up from 29 percent in 2015).

With more potential customers using mobile devices to buy products, its increasingly important to ensure your e-commerce site will deliver ease of use to desktop and mobile users alike.

The easier you can make it for your website visitors to find and buy the products theyre looking for, the more likely youll convert those product searches into sales.

Structure your e-commerce website so potential buyers can easily find what they want in as few clicks as possible, and make sure the checkout process is simple and straightforward. Also make it easy for visitors to find your refunds and exchange policy.

Studies have shown that approximately 56 percent of shoppers abandon shopping carts because they discover unexpected costs at checkout. Consider disclosing shipping options and costs earlier rather than waiting until near the end of the checkout process.

You might also think about finding a way to provide free shipping. With an increasing number of e-commerce sites offering to ship products for free, you may be at a disadvantage if you dont extend this courtesy to buyers.

Brief, clear, well-written content with relevant key words will help visitors find your products quickly and learn whats most important about them. Keep in mind content that consists of more than a few sentences may seem to go on forever on a smartphone screen.

Make sure youve included product descriptions that give enough detail without becoming redundant and boring.

A picture is worth a thousand words. How often have you heard that? For an e-commerce website, a picture can mean thousands of dollars.

An image can make or break the sale online. Shoppers want to have a visual sense of what theyre buying online.

Youll want to share images that bring out the best of your products. Consider contracting the help of a professional photographer who has experience in taking photographs for e-commerce websites.

If youre looking to create an e-commerce website for your business, you can benefit from consultation with a website development and design professional who has experience with all that they entail.

Also consider talking with a mentor at your local SCORE chapter. SCORE mentors have experience in all aspects of starting, managing, and marketing small businesses.

Greys Anatomy & Station 19 Lead ABC To Thursday Ratings Win – Deadline

ABCs duo of Greys Anatomy and Station 19 returned to the top of heap in broadcast primetime Thursday, helping the network take the top spot in overall ratings and viewership in Nielsen fast-affiliate data.

Greys (1.1 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic, 5.97M viewers) was the nights top-rated show, while its lead-in Station 19 (1.0, 6.55M) was the nights most-watched program. Both were even with last week, when they were beaten by Univisions Premio Lo Nuestro awards show. Last night, the duo was followed by A Million Little Things (0.6, 3.72M), which also was steady.

Univisions series finale of its telenovela Rubi (0.6, 1.81M) paced the Spanish-language network last night, placing it third among all broadcasters in the 9 PM time slot.

Fox finished tied with Univision for No. 2 overall in the ratings race Thursday, with a fresh lineup led off by Last Man Standing (0.7, 3.09M), which was even with last week in the demo, followed by Outmatched (0.5, 4.28M) which was steady in the demo but saw a healthy boost in viewers. Deputy (0.6, 3.64M) bumped up a tenth.

CBS was second in viewers Thursday despite its mostly repeat lineup. Its lone original was its 10 PM rookie drama Tommy (0.5, 4.64M), which rose a tenth in the demo to a series high.

At NBC, its comedy block included new episodes of Superstore (0.6, 2.60M) and Brooklyn Nine-Nine (0.5, 1.77M), both down a tenth, followed by steady Will & Grace (0.4, 2.06M) and rookie Indebted (0.4, 1.49M). Law & Order: SVU (0.6, 3.28M), already the longest-running TV primetime live-action series in history and renewed earlier Thursday for three more seasons as part of a mega Dick Wolf-NBC deal, was off a tenth.

Katy Keene (0.1, 490,000) was even with its previous week at the CW.

Society Delhi: The Anatomy of a Riot – The Diplomat

Riots, the deadliest the Indian capital of New Delhi has seen in a decade, have claimed 25 lives, including a policeman and an intelligence officer.

Over 200 civilians were injured. At least two mosques were vandalized and torched by supporters of the ruling Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP); houses and shops of Muslims were gutted; and petrol pumps, tire markets, and innumerable vehicles were set afire during the three days of violence. Ironically, U.S. President Donald Trump, who was in India for his maiden visit, praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for religious toleranceeven as the chaos unspooled.

Several journalists who were covering the riots were beaten or heckled, their mobile phones and cameras snatched away. Some were asked to prove if they were Hindus and were let off only if they agreed not to write anything against the rioters.

The arson went on for three days before a shoot-at-sight order by the police was given in the riot-hit areas. However, according to eyewitnesses, despite the order, supporters of the BJP continued to gather and chant inflammatory slogans.

From Clashes to a Pogrom

The violence broke out in Jaffrabad, Babarpur, Brahmapuri, Gorakh Park, Maujpur, Bhajanpura, Kabir Nagar, Chand Bag, Gokulpuri, Karawal Nagar, Khajoori Khas, and Kardam Puri areas after BJP leader Kapil Mishra issued a three-day ultimatum to police to clear a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) by women at the Jaffrabad Metro Station.

Mishra said, We are giving Delhi Police three days to clear the roads in Jaffrabad and Chand Bagh. We wont listen to you [police] after this. The video of his speech went viral on social media; in the footage, a police officer could be seen standing beside Mishra and smiling while Mishra made the threat.

Women protesters had blocked the road at Jaffarabad on Saturday night to protest the controversial CAA and to support a strike called by Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad on Sunday. The protest at Jaffrabad was meant to replicate the women-led protest against the CAA, which has been going on for two months at Shaheen Bagh.

Just before the New Delhi elections, several BJP leaders had given incendiary speeches against the anti-CAA protesters, calling them traitors and terrorists. A majority of the protesters are Muslims.

Union Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur, from the ruling BJP, raised the slogan of Desh ke gaddaro ko, goli maaro s***o ko (shoot the traitors of India) at a crowded election rally in Delhi. A few days later, BJP member of parliament Parvesh Verma addressed an election gathering by saying, Lakhs of people gather there [Shaheen Bagh]. They will enter your houses, rape your sisters and daughters, kill them. Theres time today Modi-Ji and Amit Shah wont come to save you tomorrow. In terms of repercussions, the MPs merely had their names dropped from the star campaigners list at the order of the Election Commission of India.

During the Delhi elections, the main poll plank of the BJP was to create a divide between the two religious communities, pitting Hindus and Muslims against one another. The partys social media campaign strategy focused on projecting the BJP as the protector of Hindus; as a corollary, anybody who opposes the CAA was painted as a traitor who should be driven out of the country. Union Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah went on to say, When you press the button on February 8 [the polling day], do so with such anger that its current is felt at Shaheen Bagh.

The BJP lost the elections to the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) but managed to retain eight seats out of 70. The recent riots broke out in the constituencies that the BJP had won in the Delhi elections.

Hours after his ultimatum, the BJPs Mishra, infamous for his provocative speeches, tweeted asking people to assemble at Maujpur at 3 p.m. to give an answer to Jaffrabad just a kilometer away.

Supporters of the BJP gathered in large numbers with saffron flags (a symbol of Hinduism). They started raising slogans such as Jai Shree Ram (Hail Lord Ram), Har Has Mahadev (Hail the Shiva), shoot the traitors, and Jo Hindu hit ki baat karega wahi desh par raaj karega (Only those who talk of Hindu wellbeing will rule this country).

The harassment of Muslim residents of the locality, who had nothing to do with the CAA protests, started long before the actual stone-pelting began. Nobody knows who threw the first stone but soon, stone pelting started between both the groups from different communities. Police fired teargas but the violence did not stop.

Policing During the Riots

For three nights, BJP supporters, wearing saffron headgear or carrying saffron flags, continued their rampage with police officials abetting them. Residents said these rioters did not belong to their locality and had come from bordering areas of Delhi.

Several videos circulating on social media show the rioters claiming police officers were with them, while others show how police officers helped the saffron goons collect stones to be thrown during the clashes.

Another video, fact-checked by AltNews, an independent platform that uses data forensics to verify viral content, showed police officers beating a group of injured men lying on the road and forcing them to sing the national anthem. One of the officers who was recording a video egged a man, hardly conscious, to sing the national anthem properly.

The Delhi Police comes under the jurisdiction of the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), headed by the BJPs Amit Shah..

Several journalists reporting from the ground reported that the police did not stop the rioting BJP supporters and even provided them with cover while they continued to pelt stones, burn property, and attack people.

Amit Mishra, a member of AAP, tweeted a video from Mustafabad where rioters were seen barging into homes chanting Jai Shree Ram even when shoot-at-sight orders were in force. In several localities, police were also seen breaking the CCTV cameras installed at street squares.

At least two mosques in Mustafabad were vandalized and attacked with stones. There were several children inside one of the mosques and they were rescued by the residents. Even the children had been beaten with rods and had serious injuries.

Of those who lost their lives, a few could be identified, including police head constable Rattan Lal, who died of a bullet injury. Two policemen have received grievous injuries.

Intelligence bureau officer Ankit Sharmas body was found in a drain. His father accused Tahir Hussain, an AAPcouncilor, of kidnaping and killing his son.

The father of Rahul Solanki, another victim, blamed BJP leader Kapil Mishra for instigating violence in the area that claimed his sons life.

Supporters of the BJP blocked the main road, cutting the localities off, and did not let ambulances reach the riot-hit areas. Several local Hindu residents helped their Muslim neighbors by taking them to hospitals since the rioters only let Hindus pass.

A minor boy who had gone out to get food for his family was shot in the crossfire and had to wait for an ambulance for six hours with a bullet still in his body. A police vehicle finally took him to the hospital, where he had to wait again for treatment.

In several other localities, people were either locked inside their homes or were not able to return. In Gamri extension, near Khajoori Khas, an 85-year-old woman burned to death when a mob of 100 rioters torched her house. Her family members managed to escape just in time but she was bedridden and could not be rescued.

Even as barbarity played out on the streets, there were
hardly any steps taken by the leaders of AAP and the Congress to help people in the riot-hit areas. When members of the Jamia Coordination Committee gathered in front of the residence of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, police dispersed them with water cannons.

Journalists Shot at, Beaten

Over a dozen journalists were attacked and intimidated while they were covering the Delhi riots. Akash Napa of JK 24 was shot at by a mob at Maujpur and was admitted to the GTB Hospital with a bullet lodged in his body.

Saurabh Shukla, Arvind Gunasekar, and Runjhun Sharma of NDTV were surrounded by BJP supporters while they were filming a mosque being vandalized and burnt at Gokulpuri. Both Shukla and Gunasekar were beaten badly. Sharma was asked to leave but she refused and pleaded with the mob to let her colleagues go. It was only after the mob saw the Hindu names on the journalists identity cards that they were let go and even then Gunasekar was forced to delete the videos first.

Hindu ho? Bach gaye (You are saved because you are Hindu), was what a rioter told Shivnarayan Rajpurohit of Indian Express after he was attacked by a mob. His diary and phone were taken away, his glasses were broken, and he was slapped twice for reporting from a Hindu-dominated area.

I was attacked by pro CAA protestors for reporting facts. A group of men armed with sticks and bricks cornered me to hit me, I pleaded them and ran for my life, tweeted Parvina Purkayastha of Times Now.

Sreya Chatterjee, a freelance journalist, tweeted: Yes! I was on the ground where Pro-CAA protestors burned houses. Broke shops. Started pelting stones towards Anti-CAA protestors. This was before Anti-CAA protestors reacted.

Anindya Chattopadhyay, a photojournalist with Times of India, wrote a first-person account in which he narrated how he was attacked by the rioters, who threatened to take off his pants to check if he was a Muslim.

Several other journalists were abused and intimidated and were asked to prove their religion. They reported extensively on how a clash turned into a riot and then a pogrom.

Trump Praises Modi for Religious Tolerance

Even as the violence raged in Delhi, U.S. President Trump was basking in the warm welcome from Prime Minister Modi.

The tryst of two political behemoths was meant to be a spectacle. Modi reciprocated the validation he received at the Howdy Modi event in September last year with Namaste Trump, which ate away approximately $13 million from Gujarats annual budget.

For the event, Trump was welcomed at the worlds largest cricket stadium, Motera, in Ahmedabad. While the two recounted their friendship during Namaste Trump, a swathe of the northeastern side of Indias capital burned.

The Trump welcome party continued unabated, despite the widespread violence.

I dont want to say anything on CAA. It is up to India. I hope it will take the right decision for its people, Trump said in a press conference at the end of his two-day visit. When asked about the Delhi violence, he said he didnt discuss individual attacks.

It was only after Trumps departure that the social media-savvy prime minister tweeted: Peace and harmony are central to our ethos. I appeal to my sisters and brothers of Delhi to maintain peace and brotherhood at all times. It is important that there is calm and normalcy is restored at the earliest.

The delay is not as odd as it might seem. Modi likes to finish the task at hand before paying attention to other issues. After all, he made sure to complete shooting on the Man vs Wild television special with the team of the Discovery Channel even on the day 48 Central Reserve Police Force personnel lost their lives in Pulwama.

On Tuesday night, however, Home Minister Shah convened a high-level meeting with his political opponent chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and Modis national security adviser, Ajit Doval, was sent to the riot-hit areas to assess the situation.

Doval came back to say the situation was under control, even when people kept reporting attacks and life in northeast Delhi was at a complete standstill. On Tuesday night, rumors of stone-pelting emerged from Laxmi Nagar area, a densely packed market area in east Delhi. BJP member of the legislative assembly Abhay Verma claimed he reached the spot to diffuse tensions but he along with his supports were seen marching in the area raising provocative slogans such as shoot the traitors.

Rays of Hope

At a time when the riot-hit citizens have nowhere to go, several Gurdwaras in north Delhi, including the prominent Majnu Ka Tila Gurdwawa, opened to their door to people fleeing the violence.

In other localities, Hindu and Muslim residents stood up for each other. In Seelampur, Dalits blocked the roads against mobs and sheltered their Muslim neighbors.

In Bhajanpura, Chandbag, Hindu residents narrated how their Muslim neighbors saved a temple from being vandalized by outsiders. Rajendra Kumar Mishra, a resident of the area, told BBC that Chandbag is 70 percent Muslim households. Residents, both Hindus and Muslims, formed watch parties to save each other from violence.

In Brijpuri area, Hindu and Muslim residents took out a unity march condemning the violence and chanting slogans that they will not let their locality be destroyed.

As violent riots tore through the northeastern part of the city, several individuals came forward to provide shelter and medical assistance to injured people.

After all the government machinery had failed, it was Delhi High Court that convened a midnight hearing at 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday and ordered the police to ensure the safe passage of injured victims to the hospitals.

The court convened at the residence of Justice Murlidhar after advocate Suroor Mander explained that 22 people were trapped in Al-Hind Hospital.

On Wednesday morning, the court convened again and pulled up the Delhi police for their failure during the riots. The court also registered first information reports (FIRs) against the three BJP leaders, Kapil Mishra, Anurag Thakur, and Parvesh Verma, for inciting violence.

The court said it cannot allow another 1984, referring to the anti-Sikh riots after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was killed. It ordered authorities to scale up efforts to help riot victims.

Station 19 and Grey’s Anatomy Survived a Blizzard – E! NEWS

Well, they didn't kill Beanie Feldstein.

Grey's and Station 19's big apparent crossover also wasn't quite the disaster we were anticipating, though the blizzard that hit Seattle wasn't great for anybody, and encouraged some really, really bad decisions. A guy on Station 19 accidentally cut off his foot and then tried to staple it back together, then tried to steal a firetruck to keep his foot from being amputated. And on Grey's Anatomy, DeLuca walked to another hospital on foot to get a liver! In the freezing cold!

And a girl named Tess (Feldstein) decided that she was going to abandon her hospital bed, because she was a patient, to pretend to be one of Richard's interns. Schmitt spent half the episode searching for her, only to find her with her hand on a surgical tool, about to assist Richard on an actual procedure. Turns out she had been in med school when she was diagnosed with cancer, and she's survived cancer four times since but never finished med school.

Richard later encouraged her to keep trying to finish med school, and revealed that he has a tremor in his hand and knows his time as a surgeon is coming to an end.

Elsewhere, DeLuca returned from his trip to get the liver with severely frozen hands, because he's a dummy who didn't wear gloves. He was still trying to treat patients when his hands were literally purple, and yelling at Meredith and Carina in the process, resenting them for any mention of his father.

Meanwhile, Meredith and McWidow are getting closer, andit's all just feeling a little...icky? We're just not rooting for this pair yet, and we're incredibly worried about DeLuca.

Over in the messy ruins that is the Amelia/Link/Owen/Teddy/Koracick situation, Teddy suddenly got a vibe that Amelia's baby might be Owen's, so while clueless Owen was looking forward to a post-blizzard snow day with his fiancee, she was kissing Koracick again, and Link was hiding out with Jo, who just discovered that Alex was never in Iowa visiting his mom at all.

We'll learn what happened with Alex next week, but for now literally everything is just a bummer, except for Bailey sort of adopting the 18 year-old Joey.

Over on Station 19, JJ gave birth in the fire station bathroom, and Andy learned that her dad only has six months to live, which was devastating. But what was really devastating was watching Travis spend all his time once again talking to a scared woman in a car, only for her to not survive. This time it was over a phone and not in a precarious situation in a bar, but it similarly made us want to give Travis a hug.

Let's hope things get better for everyone soon, for our own sake.

Station 19 and Grey's Anatomy air Thursdays, starting at 8 p.m. on ABC.

Anatomy of a perfect cottage tips and trends from Parry Sound experts – parrysound.com

Landscaping and hardscaping projects is a great way to enhance enjoyment of a property and increase its value. Flagstone patios and fire pits are really popular. They add to the outdoor living space of the cottage and are a nice area for family to get together and socialize. Its like creating an outdoor living room, but better! It also greatly adds the retail value of the cottage.

Granite is the product of choice with landscaping because it completely matches the natural environment. However, we often find limestone is a great option as well and can blend in naturally, depending on the style of cottage being built. Also, many man-made products have come a long way to complement the natural surroundings of cottage country.

Reputable contractors have the environment in mind. Using plants that are native to our area is important because it creates less waste by helping reduce water costs because they naturally adapt. They are better for our native wildlife species such as bees, butterflies and birds. Its important to use vegetation when possible to control run-off into the lakes; rather than clear-cut a property, maintain vegetation in place to filters pollutants. Also during construction, all measures must be taken to control run off into lakes and streams by using things such as silt curtains, and try to disturb as small of area as possible.

People often have to do costly and time-consuming backtracking when they hit roadblocks along the way because they did not first consult with all of the right contractors and municipalities before they begin their project. It is good to do thorough research before you begin, to know what permits you need and what bylaws exist, so you do not have to stop the work while waiting for these things to be sorted out. Hiring the right contractor is important and getting lots of information from them will help you keep things on track. Not to say there is never hiccups along the way, but you can plan and prepare to try and avoid them.

Some of the deciding factors when it comes to selecting a decking material include budget, usage, exposure, environment, aesthetics, and personal preference. If a client wants a decking material that will last a long time and requires very little maintenance, a composite or PVC decking board would be the right choice. PVC decking performs great in pretty much all environments due to the fact there are no organic ingredients in the boards. Make sure the installer knows how to work with the plastic materials and understands how to fasten them to eliminate expansion and contraction issues.

For lower budgets, pressure-treated wood or cedar lumber are viable options but they tend to require more maintenance to keep them looking good. Also, the life span of a wood deck in some environments is only 10 years because the quality of the wood used for decking today is not up to the same standards as what was used 15-25 years ago; due to the high demand, younger trees are being harvested and the integrity of the material is not what it needs to be to last for any substantial amount of time. As well, it takes a lot of work to keep a wood deck looking nice I dont know too many people who enjoy spending their cottage time sanding and staining their wood decks.

Coming up with the right design is a process that involves getting to know the client and how they plan to use their outdoor space. We like to gather information using questions such as: How do you plan to use your deck (for dining, lounging, entertaining, access to the yard, sunbathing, evening cocktails, etc.)? How many people on average will be on the deck? Do you require privacy from any direction? Does it get hot on your deck and is shade needed? Are there any special features that you would like to see, such as borders, inlays, lights? Do you have a view that you would like to maintain?

Trends are always evolving with gardening. Cottage country gardening is no different. Low maintenance gardens, which are practical for people who dont want to spend weekends gardening, are coming back in style right now. Also gaining in popularity again is the inclusion of some grass lawn areas for childrens activities. And combination gardens a healthy mixture of hardy perennials and shrubs are always a hit with people because they look great and are easier to maintain than purely flower gardens.

There is a lot of interest lately in preserving shorelines and near-shore areas because of their ecological importance. There are ways to beautify the waterfront and still maintain its natural function. Cleaning shorelines of dead limbs, debris and unwanted weeds provides a tidier appearance. Plant selectively with desired plants to give some colour to shoreline indigenous plants are best but do so with an eye towards maintaining natural appearance. Some common plants that can be used are iris, cotoneaster, daylilies, stephanandra, and hosta (if deer arent a problem) to name a few.

A lot of cottagers are adding raised beds into their designs because they offer a number of advantages. They are easier to maintain, offer a better planting base where soil is poor, accent an area that is plan and flat, and offer the opportunity raise and stack plants to different levels to show off different species.

People want to put planters on their docks to offer lake appeal, but there are valid concerns about chemicals entering the water from them. You can have flowering pots on your dock while still being environmentally friendly simply by using drip trays, which work well to collect excess water and fertilizer and also help to prevent deck stains.

When it comes to a build, dont overlook the basement, where the use of ICF (insulated concrete form) is becoming the standard. This type of basement foundation provides many advantages. It gives incredible structure and an easily achieved level, plumb and square foundation. As important, a good quality ICF provides an incredible insulation value of R30. ICF foundations are certainly more expensive than a standard, uninsulated block foundation but the extra cost is well worth it. A solid, level and square foundation is the key building block to a quality build.

Electrical planning is paramount for providing all electrical needs a customer wants. Property owners should take the time to go through the entire build with the electrical subcontractor and builder, on site. Think about the layout of the Great Room, kitchen and bedrooms with respect to where you will or may need receptacles. The best rule of thumb is to install more receptacles than less.

Exterior windows and doors should never be skimped on. We encourage our customers to spend more to achieve more in R-value, weather resistance and longevity of windows and doors. Youll spend far more time gazing out windows at the cottage than at your permanent home you want to enjoy the cottage viewsso a good rule of thumb is to err towards larger windows rather than smaller.

In order to reduce stress and building-process issues, property owners need to spend the time to find the right builder. Never go with the cheapest builder you can find. A quality finished product is never achieved by being the least expensive. Your cottage must be built properly, meeting all structural, system, landscaping and aesthetic requirements. These are never accomplished unless you spend the money required to achieve them.

Owners need to research builders thoroughly. This takes time and effort, but is imperative to limit problems during the build. Take the time to find a builder with a very good reputation. Ask for contact information of previous customers and speak with them o
penly to determine their experience with the contractor. Ask builders how long their employees have been with them. These tradesmen are paramount for a quality build as they are the people who do the actual work and their qualifications and experience must be extensive.
