A Tesla fan tweeted at Elon Musk Wednesday with a modest request for the new Tesla Roadster: a socket near the driver meant to hold the key fob.

The Tesla founder and CEO responded by teasing a feature of the next Roadster: owners "maybe won't need a key at all."

The new Tesla Roadster was unveiled in 2017 and touted as an upgraded version of Tesla's original Roadster, which was produced between 2008 and 2012. The new Roadster will do 0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds, the company said, and its base model will start at $200,000.

It's not clear whether Musk was serious about his claim that the car might not require keys, or whether keys would be replaced with an app or some other way of identifying the driver. Musk has previously teased other Tesla features on Twitter he tweeted in October that future Teslas may allow drivers to customize their car horn, replacing it with fart or goat sound effects.

The new Roadster was initially expected to arrive in 2020, but Musk has hinted that it may come later he Tweeted in September that the next Model S will go into production in late 2020 and that the next Roadster will "come later."

A Tesla spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.

It Took Elon Musk Exactly 5 Words to Reveal What He Looks for in Every New Hire (and It’s Not a College Degree) – Inc.

As CEO of Tesla and Space X, Elon Musk is leading two of the most innovative companies in the world. But even someone as smart and talented as Musk knows you don't innovate alone.

"You want to make sure that...if somebody great wants to join the company that they actually get an interview. This is actually one of my big worries. Like, if Nikola Tesla was alive today, could he get an interview? And if not, we're doing something wrong. And I'm not totally sure he would get an interview. So, if one of the most brilliant engineers who ever lived could maybe not get an interview, we should fix that and make sure we're not barring the doors from talent, or that we're looking at the right things.

Five words that should be memorized by every hiring manager and recruiter, in every company:

So, what matters more than a degree? Intelligence, for one--along with emotional intelligence. The desire and ability to consistently learn and improve. And the hard skills needed to do the job at hand.

The more "exceptional ability" a candidate can demonstrate in these areas, the greater their potential to contribute to your company.

So, what does evidence of exceptional ability look like? And how can you make finding it part of your hiring practices?

It's easy to say "you'll know it when you see it," but the truth is that's not always the case. It's easy for recruiters and hiring managers to miss said evidence if they don't know how (or where) to look.

Here arethree suggestions to help your organization identify clear evidence of exceptional ability in job candidates:

Ask them to solve a problem.

To help sift through your crop of candidates, pose a problem they'll need to solve. It could be a typicalproblem they'dbe dealing with on any given day of the week (like how to deal with an irate customer). Or, it could be a more complex problem that your company is grappling with on a larger scale.

As you analyze candidates' answers, lookfor critical thinking skills, and the ability to clearly articulate thoughts and solutions.

Hold a contest.

A contest can be a great way to identify job candidates with potential to excel.

For example, every year Microsoft hosts a hackathon duringits One Weekfestival, which is part science fair and part tech expo. Employees are encouraged to bring their "world-changing ideas" to life. One Week is extremely popular among Microsoft employees, and has helped transform the company's reputation into a "cool employer."

Of course, your company's contest can focusonnew hires. But Microsoft's hackathon is a perfect example of how to identify current employees with potential to advance. This is important for two reasons:

"This feels like, collectively, we're building toward more creativity," said one longtime Microsoft employee about the One Week hackathon. "It's why we're here."

Test for skills.

Rather than focus on what school someone went to or what type of degree they have, a handful of companies have discovered that exceptional talent comes from various backgrounds.

For example, a few years ago LinkedIn pioneered REACH, an engineering apprenticeshipthat gives opportunities to candidates "who are passionate about coding, have a strong interest in continuing to independently learn and grow, and are willing to put in the work to achieve their goals and better their community."

To be considered, applicants should expect to complete both an essay application and a coding challenge, to help recruiters determine their skill level.

What's not required from candidates? A college degree.

Of course, what qualifies as an ideal candidate will likely be different for your company than for others, and will also depend heavily on the position you're looking to fill.

But great companies know that no position is permanent--and there's always room forgreat talent. So,if you're interested in hiring people who can help improve your company and move it forward, remember those five simple words:

Clear evidence of exceptional ability.

Elon Musk Says They’re Working On Plugging The 4,400-Mile Supercharger Gap Between Europe And Asia – Jalopnik

A few hours before Elon Musk debuted the delightfully deranged Cybertruck, he tweeted something less delightful but equally deranged. When a Twitter user asked him about getting some Superchargers in Ukraine, Musk replied, why stop at Ukraine?

A full Supercharger route from London to Shanghai?! That would certainly be neat.

Lets put aside the fact that the United Kingdom is a series of islands so, strictly speaking, one cannot drive from there to Shanghai. In any event, this got us wondering, approximately how many more Superchargers does Tesla need to install to complete this modern Silk Road?

The answer: 30, at least.

That is a screenshot from Teslas Supercharger network map. Red dots are Superchargers. On the route from London to Shanghai (which the Tesla routing system and Google Maps cannot complete) the easternmost Supercharger in Europe is in Katowice, Poland.

Meanwhile, the westernmost Supercharger in Chinaif approaching from Kazakhstan via Ukraine, which Musk clearly alluded to in the tweet replyis in Xian, although in the future one might be better off taking the yet-to-exist highway through Russia.

So, as the bird flies, Tesla must plug a roughly 4,400 mile gap in the Supercharger network in order to make London-to-Shanghai a theoretically possible electric car journey.

Of course, thats as the (very tired and likely dehydrated) crow flies. Driving will add hundreds of miles if not more to the route by taking, ya know, roads. But lets call it at 4,400 miles for now.

The lowest-range Tesla for sale right now is the base Model 3 with an advertised range of 250 miles. But due to vagaries in terrain, wind, weather, and a host of other factors that could influence range, including people driving older Tesla models, even putting Superchargers every 200 miles might be cutting it a little close. After all, I hear AAA service is pretty poor in the Gobi desert. Lets call it at 150 miles just to be on the better-safe-than-sorry side.

So, Tesla would have to install 30 Superchargers to make London-to-Shanghai a reality, assuming there are no other gaps in the network.

That might not sound like a lot, and if we were talking about charging stations in major metro areas, it wouldnt be. But putting a Supercharger in the middle of the goddamn desert or unpopulated high plains or mountain passes is a tad more logistically complicated than in a Southern California shopping center.

And for what? Who is actually going to drive from Europe to China? Who is going to use the Tesla Superchargers in the middle of nowhere?

I dont mean to jump to conclusions, but it is possible, slightly possible, Elon Musk something without thinking it through.

Elon Musk Just Tweeted a Response to Ford’s New Electric Mustang Announcement, and It’s Most Excellent – Inc.

Ford made headlines this weekend when it unveiled the Ford Mustang Mach-E, an all-electric crossover SUV. The Mach-E is the beginning of a new EV strategy that will compete directly with Tesla's upcoming Model-Y, a new SUV that is scheduled to begin production next summer.

Elon Musk quickly took to Twitter to respond to Ford's announcement. Did he chide his competitor for taking so long to develop its electric vehicle technology? Did he take a shot at Ford for its interior, which features a large center display screen that looks much like the one featured in most Tesla models?

If you're surprised by Musk's response to Ford, you shouldn't be. For years, the famous CEO has insisted he's not competing with larger automakers. Rather, he's trying to spur them on.

Musk reiterated this point in a remarkable blog post way back in 2014. It was then that Musk announced that Tesla would, "in the spirit of the open source movement...not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology."

Musk went on to explain that Tesla initially pursued patents out of concern that larger car companies like Ford would copy its technology and then use their massive resources to overwhelm Tesla. But Musk soon realized that the opposite had become reality: At the time, EV programs at the major automakers were "small to non-existent."

"Given that annual new vehicle production is approaching 100 million per year and the global fleet is approximately twobillion cars, it is impossible for Tesla to build electric cars fast enough to address the carbon crisis," Musk continued. "By the same token, it means the market is enormous. Our true competition is not the small trickle of non-Tesla electric cars being produced, but rather the enormous flood of gasoline cars pouring out of the world's factories every day."

Fast forward to today. Musk's plan seems to have worked: Several major auto manufacturers have announced plans to release electric vehicles in the upcoming years. In the meantime, Tesla's position as market leader has only strengthened. And despite some serious turnover in its senior employee ranks, Tesla still has a reputation for attracting some of the world's best and brightest engineers. (That might have something to do withits CEO's hiring philosophy.)

Considering all this, it seems we can take Musk's tweet at face value: genuine encouragement for a challenger making strides in a market that's long overdue for more competition.

In other words, now the real fun starts.

Few companies have attracted as much praise, derision, scepticism and enthusiasm as Telsa Motors and its founder Elon Musk. Having interviewed Elon Musk and the Tesla leadership as part of my research, one of the questions Im asked most frequently is: how can you make sense of Teslas wild strategies? The latest example is the move to create a Gigafactory for car batteries just outside Berlin.

Part of the challenge in understanding Teslas strategy are the commentators. These range from short-selling to star worship. Many ask the wrong questions, such as why Tesla isnt making any money a question appropriate for a mature business, but not a growth one. While all businesses must be sustainable in the long run, Tesla is like most rapid growth companies that eat up more cash flow than they produce while in the early growth phase.

But the biggest part of the challenge may simply be understanding Teslas strategy. Why would a new company, already taking on the Herculean task of introducing an entirely new type of car to the market, also take on the incredible risk of building some of the worlds largest battery factories? Or for that matter, a dealership and repair network? Or a charging network? Or, even crazier, a solar power business?

On the surface, it makes no sense and there is no doubt that it introduces more risk to the company, increasing its chances of failure. But when viewed through the lens of the decades of research on technology strategy, Teslas approach takes on a different light.

The big challenge to understanding Teslas strategy is that most of us only look at it from one level of analysis. Namely, when we see Tesla, we see a company that produces cars. But when I teach executives how to invest in future technology, I encourage them to think at multiple levels of the technology stack: not just products, but also components and systems. So lets take a closer look at Tesla.

At the level of the product, although a Tesla looks the same as other vehicles, underneath the hood the vehicle has a fundamentally different architecture both in terms of hardware and software. This matters because a long research tradition underscores that when incumbents face a new technology architecture, they struggle to understand and adapt.

Even though they can see what the technology is, they struggle to adapt both because they are reluctant to give up the existing capabilities they have perfected over decades and to fully integrate the new ones. Although incumbents may imitate the new architecture, they have a hard time overcoming the way they have done things in the past and to match the superior performance of the new, purpose-built architecture.

You can see evidence of this playing out in the auto industry. Early electric vehicles produced by incumbents on internal combustion engine architectures paled in comparison to the Tesla, and even newer blank slate efforts sometimes dont quite measure up. Its always the little things that get in the way such as the fact that most vehicles built by other manufacturers have up to five separate software systems rather than a single integrated system like a Tesla, which gives a performance advantage.

If we lower our level of analysis to the level of components, rather than products, we see the Tesla strategy in a different light again. What we know about technical systems is that, as they mature, the value migrates to the bottlenecks that control the systems performance.

This is why in the PC industry, Intel has made so much money for decades while hard drive and modem manufacturers made peanuts. Intel controlled the bottleneck to the performance of the PC whereas hard drive manufacturers did not.

The bottleneck for electric vehicles now and in the future is the batteries. If Tesla can dramatically lower the prices of batteries by manufacturing at scale, they lower the barriers to adoption for electric vehicles. But more importantly, the battery bottleneck isnt going away any time soon, which means, if they succeed, Tesla controls the biggest profit pool in the future of auto manufacturing.

Lastly, if we raise our level of analysis above components and products, to the level of systems, we see Tesla in yet another light. The truth is that consumers dont want products, they want solutions. Most car makers deliver products. But Tesla tries to deliver a complete experience: car, upgrades, charging, insurance the whole bundle. And as a result, the majority of Tesla owners talk in glowing terms about their Tesla, both because it is a great car, but also a great solution. In what other vehicle do you wake up in the morning to find new self-driving features?

Lets be clear the risks are high. Tesla has compounded major bet upon major bet by having a multi-level strategy that targets components, products and systems. Everything has to go well to succeed. But if the stars align, its a brilliant strategy at all levels.

Ikarian honey: The secret ingredient to long life? – CBS News

Not far from the picture-perfect tourist hubs of Santorini and Mykonos, where cruise ships unload tourists by the thousands, sits another Greek island, more rugged but no less remarkable. Ikaria is off the beaten path.

Up the winding mountain roads of this isolated isle, you're likely to notice brightly-painted boxes dotting the landscape. And what's happening inside those boxes is generating some buzz: Bees busy making a rare honey that locals believe is one of the secrets to a long life.

Beekeeper Andoni Karimalis explained to correspondent Jonathan Vigliotti that people on the island have been eating the honey for generations, to keep healthy and strong well into old age.

At work in her weaving studio, 109-year-old Yaya Joanna agrees there is something special about it.

So does 87-year-old-beekeeper Giorgos Stenos. He eats the honey "every single day."

Chef Diane Kochilas says she has a spoonful every morning.

"So, when the locals here say it's like their medicine, their daily vitamin, there's truth to that?" asked Vigliotti.

"There is truth to that," she replied. "And the local older guys say it's nature's Viagra. I don't know if I should be telling you that!"

To our knowledge, that claim hasn't been tested. But research has found that people here have among the highest life expectancies in the world. And the University of Athens concluded that Ikarians are more than twice as likely as Americans to reach age 90, often in better health.

Kochilas said, "What was it in 'Mary Poppins' 'Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down'? Well, a spoonful of honey, you don't need medicine!"

For centuries humans have valued honey for its medicinal properties. And in Ikaria, known in ancient times as the "healing island," the honey is different from that found on most supermarket shelves.

"First of all there's no industrial farming on the island," said Kochilas. "There's very few commercial undertaking whatsoever. So, nature is pretty pure."

As a result, the pollen and nectar collected by the bees is free of chemicals and pesticides normally found in commercial or private farming. And unlike most honey sold in the U.S., Ikarian honey is also unheated, unfiltered, and unpasteurized all processes which can destroy the natural vitamins and minerals.

In other words, said David Kahn, "It's going from the bees to somebody's mouth. Andoni (the beekeeper) is just facilitating."

David and his wife, Robyn, are also helping spread the word. The American expats who moved to the island a decade ago for a simpler life, introduced Andoni to a distributor in the U.S.

"When we first came, we had a lot of friends that would want the honey because we had it at our house," said Robyn. "They were like, 'What is this? It's so great?' So, he kept going up to Andoni all the time. They said, 'Where can we order this stuff?'"

"It's basically been a very well-kept secret," said David.

That secret, now, perhaps a little less well-kept.

So, how does Diane Kochilas feel about word spreading? "I have to be honest, that's a double-edged sword, because we want to share, of course, the goodness. But we also want to retain the purity of the place and keep it more or less as it is."

The Future of Sports Law and Business Conference – Lexology

Kieran Mercer and Miriam Spencer, representing our Sports Injury team, attended the flagship Kings Chambers Future of Sports Law and Business Conference at Manchester Citys Etihad Stadium on 1 November 2019.

The conference brought together sports lawyers, athletes, regulators and academics to discuss the most prescient legal issues facing the world of sport. The conference included panels covering topics from the regulation of football agents to bullying and sexual abuse in sport.

Of particular interest to the growth of the sports injury practice were the reflections of keynote speaker David Casement QC, who discussed the toxic environment that many professional footballers currently inhabit as a result of widespread racism and discrimination within the game. The links between discrimination and mental health issues in football have been exacerbated by the modern-day camera culture and demands of social media.

A 2017 study published in the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine found that 37% of professional footballers in Europe recorded symptoms of anxiety or depression within a 12-month period. The duty of care owed by a club to its players is demonstrable and clubs should be conscious of their inclusion and equality responsibilities. In the wider context, where clubs fail to adequately protect and support their players during periods of poor mental health, they could be opening themselves up to litigation in cases where foreseeable psychiatric injury results.

Concussion

A growing area of concern in sports injury is the treatment of concussions and the long-term impact on cognitive function when such injuries are not effectively managed. Sport-related concussion is defined somewhat vaguely as a traumatic brain injury induced by biomechanical forces. The extent and longevity of the injury varies.

Sports regulators have divergent approaches to procedure for assessing athletes for suspected concussions during play. Notably, where there is suspicion of concussion in rugby, players are removed from play and should undergo the SCAT5 recognition test if they are to be considered for a return to action. During the assessment, a substitute takes their place; the substitution is made permanent if the player cannot return to the field. In contrast, in football, FIFA currently only requires players to undergo a three-minute assessment, which takes place on the pitch or side of the field. Although the clinical understanding of concussion and its links with degenerative brain injury is still in its infancy, it is thought that the procedure in football is insufficient and is putting players at risk.

Daniel Parslow, a former professional footballer and concussion awareness campaigner, reflected on his experience when suffering a concussion during a game in February 2019. Daniel passed the basic test initiated by his clubs medical staff before returning to the game and suffering worsening symptoms soon after; he lost his vision and felt nauseous. Fortunately, half-time arrived without Daniel making any further meaningful contributions to the match, which could have risked further injury. Daniel remained symptomatic for six months, suffering from headaches and exhaustion, and retiring from football in the process.

Unlike rugby, there is no provision for concussion substitutions in football and the sports law-making body, the International Football Association Board (IFAB), has decided not to consider rule changes until its annual general meeting, which will be held in Belfast on 29 February 2020. In the interim, with footballers at risk of potential injury from ineffective concussion recognition practices, clubs and individual practitioners could face liability where medical staff fail to protect their players and injury results. Under the Bolam test, to show a breach of duty, a claimant must demonstrate that in conducting a short, on-field concussion test the clinician followed a course of action which is not supported by a reasonable body of medical opinion. The clinician and clubs exposure is compounded by the pressure sports clinicians can face from players and managers to allow an injured player to return to action as was seen in the infamous incident involving Dr Eva Carneiro and Jose Mourinho during Chelseas Premier League match in August 2015. Currently, if medical teams at professional football clubs followed the FIFA head injury guidelines, they could be deemed negligent under Bolam, increasing litigation risks. Additionally, FIFA and IFAB could be deemed responsible for delaying rule changes when evidence shows their procedures are out of step with clinical opinion and best practice in other sports.

Growth of womens sport

A further highlight was the Growth and Opportunities in Womens Sport panel which included Sue Smith, former England footballer and Carrie Dunn, author of Pride of the Lionesses. Carrie Dunn gave a brief history of womens football, revealing that following the First World War the womens sport was more popular than the mens until it was banned in 1921 for being quite unsuitable for females.

Today, there has been significant growth in womens football, demonstrated by the success of the recent Womens World Cup and Barclays groundbreaking sponsorship of the Womens Super League earlier this year. Despite this unprecedented growth, the panel highlighted the various inequities in the womens game, most pertinently in relation to the treatment of injuries. Sue Smith revealed that when she suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, her contract with England was immediately terminated.

Similarly, the panel noted that female players at one Championship club had no option but to fundraise via JustGiving to pay for their rehabilitation and surgeries or resort to waiting for treatment as regular NHS patients. Additionally, despite the advances in the commercialisation of womens football, the rewards are not evenly distributed, with high-profile clubs such as Liverpool FC still not paying their womens team enough for their players to be full-time professionals.

Overall, the conference was an excellent opportunity for Stewarts to remain abreast of the key areas of growth in the sports injury and disputes market, and to learn how best we can assist our clients with the biggest challenges facing the sporting world.

Child Maltreatment, Relationship with Father, Peer Substance Use, and Adolescent Marijuana Use – DocWire News

This longitudinal prospective study examined the relationship between child maltreatment as per reports to child protective services (CPS) and adolescent self-reportedmarijuana use, and the association between relationships with mothers and fathers and use ofmarijuana. The association between relationships with parents early in childhood (ages 6-8 years) and during adolescence with adolescentmarijuana usewere also probed. Another aim examined whether relationships with parents moderated the link between child maltreatment and youthmarijuana use. The sample included 702 high risk adolescents from the Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect (LONGSCAN), a consortium of 5 studies related to maltreatment. Children were recruited at age 4 or 6 years together with their primary caregiver. Some were recruited due to their risk for child maltreatment, others were already involved with CPS, and children in one site had been placed in foster care.

Logistic regression analysis was performed using youth self-report ofmarijuana useas the criterion variable and child maltreatment and the relationships with parents as predictor variables, controlling for youths perceptions of peer substance use and parental monitoring, parental substance use, race/ethnicity, sex and study site. Approximately half the youth had usedmarijuana. Most of them described quite positive relationships with their mothers and fathers. Participantmarijuana Usewas associated with a poorer quality of relationship with mother during adolescence, and with peer and parental substance use. A better relationship with father, but not mother, during adolescence attenuated the connection between Child Maltreatment and youthMarijuana Use.

CO.AS.IT. Community Services in Brisbane recently celebrated two of its clients, who both reached the age of 100: Enid Athorn from Chermside and Anna Barbi from New Farm.

When asked what her secret to a long life was, Enid said it was her continual activity at home and outside and trying new things and being a little adventurous.

Meanwhile, Anna put her longevity down to a positive outlook:

When I feel a little low in spirits, I try to work up the motivation to start again. Im too busy to stop.

Both centenarians are an inspiration to not only their family and friends, but anyone whos had the pleasure of meeting them.

She still takes the stairs to get to where she needs to go, Cristiano said.

Shedoesnt take any medicine, eats nutritious food, has a positive attitude and is very active.

An NBA player choke-slamming his teammate and then hitting him with a folding chair isn't usually the kind of pregame activity that screams positive team chemistry. It's working pretty well for the Milwaukee Bucks, though.

Wesley Matthews and Robin Lopez joined the Bucks as free agents this summer, rekindling a friendship they built over two years together in Portland from 2013-15. Acting out wrestling scenarios was part of their high jinks back then and they've resumed the practiceas members of the Bucks, playing out pregame skits in arenas around the country much to the surprise of arena staff and the delight of their teammates.

In Boston, Matthews ambushed Lopez in a narrow hallway, hitting him with team equipment as teammates continued their stretches nearby. There was a stone-cold stunner in Oklahoma City, the aforementioned chair appearance in Chicago and most recently the two played out a nearly minute-long tag-team match that included a cameo kick from Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Were going to run out of material soon," Matthews said with a smile. "Its something weve done for a while now we did it in Portland but nothing, like, to this magnitude. Its just kind of goofing around but were really starting to embrace it, have fun with it, the teams starting to get in on it a little bit more and now weve got to keep it fresh. ...

I think Im going to start sending RoLo some film. Were going to start bouncing ideas back off each other.

Although he was never much of a wrestling fan, Lopez has always been game for playing the heel. He's got plenty of practice from his famous, playful interactions with mascots around the league and when Matthews the wrestling fan and brains of the operation needed a worthy adversary, Lopez was ready to step up.

I like to think of myself as a thespian," Lopez said."Im not a wrestling connoisseur in the same way Wesley is, but its something weve been doing for a little bit. I found that we have a lot of wrestling fans on the team, so its something thats kind of blossomed, taken a life of its own.

One of the team's biggest wrestling fans is none other than Antetokounmpo. He took his family to WWE Raw in Chicago on Christmas in 2017 and less than a week later he took some of his teammates to another event on a road trip in Toronto.

The interest of Antetokounmpo and other Bucks players is what has helped Matthews and Lopez's routine go mainstream, taking their act to the tunnel before the teamheads out to the court instead of being a random sideshow for sparse crowds in the hallways of the arena. As a collectively sanctioned event, more and more players want to get involved.

Its fun," Antetokounmpo said."I told them I wanted to join the routine and they allowed me to join the routine. So, it's fun."

This new act adds a new wrinkle to what was already one of the more positive locker rooms in the NBA. Last season, the Bucks established a fun, loose, cohesive culture that permeated everything they did.Everyone kept a laser focus on the court, but outside of game time their intensity melted away as they enjoyed each other's company and kept things light and drama-free.

A new pregame bit from a pair of veteran additions fits in nicely with the vibe.

It kind of just gets everybody loose, ready for the game," Matthews said.

Of course, performing in games is more important than performing beforehand. Through 15 games heading into a clash at 7:30 p.m. Saturday with the Detroit Pistons at Fiserv Forum, both Lopez and Matthews are still adjusting to their new roles.

Lopez, backing up his twin brother, Brook, has averaged 4.6 points and 2.7 rebounds over 14.2 minutes per game. He has worked to stretch his game out beyond the three-point line with tepid results, going 6 of 25 (24.0%). However, before an 0 for 2 night Thursday against the Trail Blazers, Lopez had made three-pointers in three straight games.

Matthews has had more of an impact, particularly lately. He's been an every-game starter since joining the Bucks, though his contributions have generally been understated and reserved his defense and three-point shooting. Thus far, 61 of Matthews' 87 shot attempts have come from long range.

I think it should never be underestimated or not appreciated what he does for us defensively," Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said before Wednesday's game in Atlanta."I think hes locked in, he makes things difficult on the wings. So, I think thats where we want him to start. Hell get more and more comfortable. I think his patience is good, I think hes in a good place and I think things will start happening for him on both ends.

Budenholzer's words proved prophetic. Matthews got going a bit on offense against the Hawks, putting up 10 points and displaying more offensive balance than any game to this point in the season, scoring inside and out while dishing out three assists. On Thursday, Matthews predominantly spent his time behind the three-point line, making 4 of 7 attempts, including one in the fourth quarter that padded Milwaukee's lead to eight points.

"You know every night hes going to defend," Antetokounmpo said."You know hes going to do that no matter whats going on, but when hes locked in offensively, knocking down shots hes definitely taking this team to the next level.

The challenge now for Matthews and Lopez will be to help the Bucks get to that next level. That applies both on the court and to their pregame shenanigans.

Ten years ago, Michael Inkpen had a busy schedule, shuttling from the chemistry lab where he pursued his Ph.D. studies by day to the London clubs and bars where he performed with an indie rock band well into the night. That changed abruptly when one day he felt a lump in his neck.

In retrospect, Inkpen sees something worthwhile in the life-interrupting diagnosis of Hodgkin lymphoma that followed. His cancer turned out to be highly treatable, and experiencing serious illness firsthand elicited a philosophical outlook that has stuck with him in the years since.

Life is too short to get hung up on small things, said Inkpen, assistant professor of chemistry at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. It was a humbling journey, realizing that youre essentially just a bag of water, and amazing, really, that youre here at all.

After chemotherapy and radiation treatment, Inkpens cancer was in remission. He returned to juggling chemistry and club gigs before ultimately pulling back from performing to focus entirely on earning his Ph.D. Then, after a postdoctoral stint at Imperial College in the U.K., he spent two years at Columbia University in New York and one year at the University of Rennes 1 in France on an EU-funded Marie Skodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Global Individual Fellowship. This past January, his path led to Los Angeles, where he joined USC Dornsife and set about designing his own lab.

Moving to Los Angeles and joining USC offered a dream opportunity to design and build my own independent lab and create a research group at a top university in a world-class city, Inkpen said.

Building blocks

Inkpens research is located at the interface of chemistry and physics; his goal is to better understand how molecular systems can be used to transport electric charges. Building on his interdisciplinary training, he aims to both synthesize new materials and then study their properties by connecting them between tiny, nanoscale electrodes.

His approach is reminiscent of LEGO bricks he explores relationships between individual molecular building blocks and their extended, assembled chemical structures in one, two and three dimensions. This research might eventually bring about insights into and breakthroughs in energy storage or molecular-scale electronics.

Moores Law famously predicted in the 1960s that improvements in microchip transistor manufacturing would yield ever smaller components, resulting in steadily increasing computing capability. This principle has so far held true, as seen in todays compact, more powerful devices. (Think smartphones.)

If you extrapolate Moores Law, you eventually get to molecular-sized circuit components, Inkpen said. In addition to their small size, molecular components are highly customizable and demonstrate unique properties tied to quantum mechanics. Today there is growing interest in exploring what molecules can do that traditional silicon-based technologies cannot.

Inkpen is particularly interested in how the introduction of positive or negative charges may change the electronic properties of materials. This is akin to how charging a balloon by rubbing it against hair will let it stick to a wall, whereas, demonstrating a different behavior, an uncharged balloon simply falls to the ground.

Scientific storytelling

Beyond the science itself, Inkpen is fascinated by how science can be shared with diverse audiences in innovative, creative ways. Human connection is important in science, he said, and the desire for it is what led him to cofound a band so many years ago.

The Ph.D. can sometimes be a lonely business, particularly when your experiments arent working out and you dont know why, Inkpen said. Writing songs and gigging was fun, and provided a healthy counterpoint to long hours at the chemistry bench.

Today, Inkpen attends science cafes and follows science bloggers and vloggers, including Derek Lowe of In The Pipeline, Dianna Cowern of Physics Girl, and the University of Nottinghams Periodic Videos. Inkpen is a fan of the late physicist Richard Feynman, legendary for popularizing science in unique ways as well as for bongo drumming. Feynman, a Nobel laureate, published accessible works on the philosophy of science and delivered TV interviews and lectures in a timeless, inimitable style.

These scientific rock stars didnt stay in their ivory towers doing experiments, they embraced unconventional approaches to show millions of people why what they do, and how they think, is fascinating and relevant, Inkpen said.

Its no surprise that besides teaching and mentoring graduate students, Inkpen enjoys occasionally blogging about chemistry and life as a researcher and plans to boost his involvement in science outreach to K-12 and underserved college populations.

For me, being a scientist is not only about the results and hard data; you are part of a community, he said. I have frequently been inspired over the years by captivating school experiments, science documentaries, blog posts or even simple tweets, and I am determined to pay it forward.

Odd ‘entropic bonds’ akin to chemical ones can form between nanoparticles – Chemistry World

Entropy maximisation can lead to entropic bonding that is remarkably similar to traditional chemical bonding between molecules, researchers in the US propose, even when effectively no electronic interaction occurs. The phenomenon could be useful in controlling self-assembly of colloids and other structures in soft matter.

The second law of thermodynamics famously states that, in any allowed process, the entropy of a system always increases. Entropy is sometimes defined broadly as the degree of disorder or randomness in a system, and the second law explains why a highly pressurised flask of gas will spontaneously spread out to fill a vacuum but all the molecules in a room will never spontaneously concentrate into a flask, leaving vacuum everywhere else. However, the second law often springs surprises: maximising entropy, which is more precisely the number of microscopic states of a system corresponding to each macroscopic state, can drive molecules to self-assemble from a seemingly disordered liquid into an ordered crystal, for example. The particles can assemble themselves in more different ways if they become a crystal than if they remain a liquid, explains computational scientist Sharon Glotzer of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Under suitable conditions, colloidal nanoparticles can be arranged such that direct intermolecular forces arising from electronic interactions are almost entirely screened. The molecules therefore behave like hard spheres and, in the absence of other forces, are governed purely by entropy. The definitive experiment to establish this required extreme measures to avoid the influence of gravity. They flew the experiment on the International Space Station, explains Glotzer. The astronauts produced all kinds of gorgeous crystals in test tubes.

The microscopic details of entropys influence on systems remain poorly understood, however. When we work with experimentalists and they grow nanoparticles in solution, they get whatever shape they get, and then they try to functionalise them with DNA or organic ligands, for example, to engineer the explicit interactions that arise from electrons, says Glotzer. Nobody ever says How do I engineer the entropy of my system?

In their new research, Glotzer and colleagues conducted a series of computational simulations focusing on hexagonal lanthanide-fluoride nanoplates. These can be synthesised with a wide range of bond angles and, in experiments, are often functionalised with multiple different groups. The researchers, however, focused on nanoplates with no functional groups and therefore negligible electronic interactions. When you strip all those interactions away, what you are left with is just entropy, explains Glotzer.

The researchers found that, despite the absence of physical attractive forces between the molecules, crystal structures formed that were remarkably similar to those seen under the influence of traditional chemical bonding. In principle, we all knew that maximisation of entropy in the absence of any other forces could order things, explains Glotzer, What we didnt know is that these emergent statistical, entropic forces could be highly directional and predictable. That predictable directionality is what has led us to argue that these emergent forces are, to all intents and purposes, bonds.

Theoretical chemist Daan Frenkel at the University of Cambridge says the Glotzer lab hugely expanded his own work on entropic self-assembly in the 1980s and 1990s. She has shown that purely entropic effects can produce a huge variety of crystal structures, liquid crystal structures and quasicrystal structures. That, I think, was a surprise to everybody. He says the present paper is not terribly surprising for people familiar with entropic self-assembly but attempts an intuitive theoretical rationalisation of what they have found in the past that gives general rules of thumb to predict which structures will be formed and which will not.

The researchers now aim to develop a predictive, microscopic theory of entropic bonding that can be combined with traditional theories of chemical bonding to assist in molecular design. We want to understand the role of entropy and shape alone in a system that also has chemical interactions, says Glotzer.

Mayor of Texas chemical blast town on latest EPA deregulation: They have a short memory – Electrek

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced yesterday that they were ending regulations that require chemical plants to provide the public with information about potential risks.

EPA administrator Andrew Wheeler says the regulations were unnecessary administrative burdens. Chemical manufacturers lobbied (clearly successfully) for this change.

In 2013, there was a fire at the West Fertilizer Co. plant in West, Texas. It caused ammonium nitrate to ignite, and it triggered a huge explosion that destroyed the plant, as well as a nearby nursing home and apartment complex.

The explosion killed 15 people, 10 of whom were firefighters.

The EPA then put regulations in place under the Obama administration that required chemical plants to provide information upon request to members of the public about risks.

When new regulations were enacted after a deadly fertilizer plant explosion killed 15 people in a Texas town south of Dallas, West Mayor Tommy Muska hadnt even had the chance to read the rules before they were obsolete.

A week after the Obama-era rules regulating how companies store dangerous chemicals were put in place, the administration of newly inaugurated President Donald Trump put them on hold in January 2017.

Muska was in his first term as mayor when the explosion rocked West on April 17, 2013.

By the time I got [the Obama rules] in my hands, it was already part of the Trump administration, and they shelved it, Muska said Thursday. I was somewhat disappointed. I would love for them to revisit some of those processes that go into chemical storage. Theres a happy medium between economic concerns brought on by regulation and protecting the public.

The American people and American politicians, they have a short memory, Muska said. Theyre going to say everything is fine, and every few years something like this is going to happen again, and Oh, yeah, we need to look at this again.

Were yesterdays news. Its not on anybodys minds as it was in 13 and 14.

If you lived next to a chemical plant, would you want to know what was being manufactured there, and what the risk was to the environment, your home, your family, your health, and your own life? Yeah, we thought so. Imagine what a blow this rollback announcement was to the people who lived in the nursing home and the apartment complex and to the families of those who lost their lives. And clearly, its a blow to the mayor of West, who had to lead during an awful tragedy.

Way to put profit before people, EPA. The focus of your press release is about how much money youre going to save but it doesnt quantify that or provide evidence. It might be time to change your name to something else.

And yet nobody has died, and many of the initial symptoms appear to have worn off. Few at the rally complained of having felt anything at all, or of feeling anything now. Some in Rouen are puzzled at the depth of the reaction.

This is a subject that mobilizes a kind of tension, said Guy Pessiot, a local historian who once ran Rouens tourism office. Theres a kind of permanent anxiety. Its the number one subject of conversation.

And yes, he said, theres a kind of hyper-reaction: Were all going to die 15 minutes ago.

He worried that the image of rotten Rouen, industrialized and smoke-filled Gustave Flaubert, the towns most famous native son, described smokestacks of factories pushing out immense brown plumes in Madame Bovary would return.

ST. LOUIS A $53 million rehab of the Chemical Building, the century-old, 17-story red brick and terra cotta architectural gem that has sat vacant in the heart of downtown for over a decade, has won final signoff from the city.

The St. Louis Land Clearance for Redevelopment Authority gave the green light this week to local development incentives for the project, including 17 years of full property tax abatement, a decade of personal property tax abatement and a sales tax exemption on construction materials. Financing is expected to close at the beginning of the year and construction to begin soon thereafter, with completion scheduled for mid-2021.

Restoration St. Louis, led by Amy and Amrit Gill, announced in April that it intended to buy the building at 721 Olive Street from a New York firm whose plans for micro-apartments had stalled. The Gills plan to add a mix of 84 hotel rooms and 72 apartments to the historic structure designed by Henry Ives Cobb and connect it to their recently completed Hotel St. Louis next door.

While the St. Louis Board of Aldermen approved the incentive package in July, conflicting personalities and the large size of the incentive package led behind-the-scenes negotiations to boil into view over the summer.

The Gills plan called for extending the 20-year tax abatement district that had been approved for use on Hotel St. Louis to also cover the Chemical Building, providing the last 17 years of tax abatement for the new rehab project. Thats despite a move by the city in recent years to no longer abate 100% of new property taxes except in the weakest neighborhoods.

City officials also gave the Hotel St. Louis project a break on half of the city sales tax on hotel rooms, up to $2.3 million. That was not included in the Chemical Building incentive package, but a personal property tax exemption was added to abate furniture and other fixtures for a decade.

I really believe this is a good use of the citys money, and necessary to restore this building, Restoration St. Louis vice president of development Laura Rebbe told a St. Louis aldermanic committee in July.

Some aldermen questioned the amount of the incentive, given the citys new guidelines, noting the developers also planned to use state and federal historic tax credits as part of the financing package.

The committee chair, Joe Roddy, has butted heads with the Gills on other projects over the years and was upset that the initial proposal included 17 years of personal property tax abatement instead of only a decade, a concession he said he had tried to negotiate. City staff indicated that the difference amounted to only about $100,000 over the life of the incentive.

LCRA Director Otis Williams made a personal plea in July to aldermen to endorse the incentives and get the building redeveloped, reactivating the block and generating new tax revenue.

I understand that many of you have concerns or have issues either with the project tax abatement or with the developer, but if we could for the sake of getting this project done, if we could have support for it, I would certainly appreciate it, Williams said at the July hearing.

With a commitment to reduce the personal property tax abatement to only 10 years, aldermen ultimately endorsed the incentive package.

Second-year swimmer excited for new season – The Observer

Kate Ptashnik is a second-year distance free swimmer on the Case Western Reserve University swim team. With the season still young, she looks to improve on a stellar first year that featured an 18:21.88 in the 1,650 free. Swimming provides Ptashnik with countless memories, including getting punched in the face. Ptashnik is currently majoring in nutritional biochemistry and likes to spend time with her friends.

What is your favorite part of being on the swim team? Why?

My favorite part of being on the swim team is being surrounded by people who have similar work ethics, but different passions than I do. I enjoy hearing and seeing my teammates/friends being excited about things they are doing while we get to bond through something we all love.

Do you have any meets that you remember being particularly special? Why?

The Wooster Invitational meet last year, I was accidentally punched in the face by another athlete right before my race (the mile), but then proceeded to swim my best time of the season.

Aside from swimming, what other activities are you involved in on campus? Can you explain what you do in them?

I am the Greek Games chair and the executive assistant in Kappa Alpha Theta. I am also a tour guide at the CWRU Office of Admissions. Additionally, I am a part of research within the nutrition department, where we are trying to teach children with family members who have diabetes how to make healthy and nutritious foods.

Why are you majoring in nutritional biochemistry? What about it interests you?

I am majoring in nutritional biochemistry because I liked both biology and chemistry, and then got early exposure to a nutrition course my first semester here and absolutely loved it. I am interested in nutritional biochemistry because I think it is really applicable to a student athlete as well as just a person.

What are your favorite free time activities? Why?

Spending time with my friends, both on and not on the swim team, because we can always have fun no matter what else is happening in our stressful CWRU life.

What is your favorite quote or what inspires you?
