New "Monsterpocalypse" releases: Ulgoth, Apes, and Robots, Oh My! – Bleeding Cool News

Monsterpocalypse from Privateer Press is unlike any other miniature game on the market. Players assemble and paint teams of giant monsters, then bring those monsters together to fight it out over a model city. Monsterpocalypse takes everything you love about Godzilla, King Kong, Ultraman, and Power Rangers and puts it all into the palm of your hand.

The latest Monsterpocalypse releases had a lot to offer just about anyone who loves giant monsters! Im going to start with the latest Kingdom of the Apes releases, since, well, giant fighting apes.

Thought to have emerged from somewhere within the harshest and most inaccessible peaks of the Himalayas, White Dajan is a ferocious giant ape that has emerged to confront Earths would-be despoilers. Possessing the power to summon winters ferocity, White Dajan is noted for his rage and unbridled violence even among the Empire of the Apes. He seems to have a particular hatred for buildings and crowded cities, seeking to level such structures whenever his anger is provoked. This makes him a perilous guardian, though he has also shown affection for humanity and a willingness to fight alongside them. Considering the foes Earth faces, a few toppled buildings are considered an acceptable price to pay to appease this formidable ally.

White Dajan also gets a little reinforcement from these crazy ape bombers, who appear to be riding bombs into battle!

Though the most gargantuan of the great apes might be mistaken for unthinking beasts, their intelligence is demonstrated by their ground forces, who possess borrowed technology that they utilize with uncanny sophistication. Ape bombers soar through the air on jury-rigged portable jet engines, capable of dropping high-yield explosives with considerable accuracy. And command apes have been witnessed making use of radio communication devices to orchestrate attacks, despite the fact that the language they employ seems like nothing but gibberish to human ears.

The Lords of Cthul have a new beastie, a nasty looking monster called Ulgoth:

An otherworldly embodiment of toxicity and pain, Ulgoths very blood destroys what he does not directly assault, and the world itself shudders in his passage. Unlike some other Lords of Cthul, it is difficult to determine if Ulgoth is even intelligent, so far as humanity is concerned, as it seems almost more a force of supernatural destruction and transformation. Wherever it treads, the world is changed around it, and some scientists have theorized Ulgoth might be akin to a sinister terraforming device, one bent on changing the very nature of the Earth into an environment more amenable to creatures of Cthul. It is also responsible for hastening the proliferation of lesser horrors from their reality, spawning and summoning such beings with a frequency that defies reason.

Ulgoth is not the type of monster that will be shown up by some damned dirty ape, so it brought its own reinforcements into battle:

It is difficult for even the brightest minds of humanity to understand the fiendish creatures of the Lords of Cthul. Snatchers are among the most feared of their lesser minions, bloated hovering creatures capable of seizing hapless victims and transforming them into a similar biomass of Cthulians. Against such a fate, some might consider the alternative of being torn apart by a swooping Hellion to be preferable. Hellions are batlike hunters capable of swift movement and similarly swift foe neutralization.

Finally, for those of you who like your giant, stomping Monsterpocalypse action in a mechanized form, there is Gorghadratron, who fights for whoever can afford its massive price tag:

Nothing demonstrates the military manufacturing capabilities of UberCorp International better than its gigantic weaponized hardware platforms, each customized to monstrous configurations. Gorghadratron brings the raw obliterating power of the so-called Planet Eaters to anyone with sufficient funds to commit to an exclusive purchasers license. Built with innovative polymers and alloys derived from recovered xenoexobiological materials, Gorghadratron is as durable as it is lethal, with longevity assured by the recommended 10-year UberCorp maintenance contract, purchased separately. UberCorp cannot be held responsible for any collateral damage incurred by overloading Gorghadratrons reactors.

Rimrock Gold Corp. Announces the Launch of Acqua CBD Coffee Infused with Resveratrol – GlobeNewswire

Las Vegas, Nov. 07, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- LAS VEGAS, November 7, 2019 -- Rimrock Gold Corp. (OTC Pink: RMRK) (the Company), is pleased to announce that its wholly-owned subsidiary Acqua Cannabis Corp (Acqua) has launched a line of CBD coffee infused with resveratrol (www.acquacbdcoffee.com). Acqua has partnered with Vera Roasting Company to infuse Arabica coffee beans with one of natures most potent antioxidants, resveratrol, utilizing Veras patented process that promotes bio-absorption. Each batch of beans is also infused with CBD derived from industrial grown hemp and contains 0% THC.

Resveratrol is a potent antioxidant found naturally in the skin of red grapes and is present in red wine. Decades of research have tied daily consumption of resveratrol to cardiovascular health, anti-aging, and cancer prevention. Acqua CBD Coffee now offers those same benefits in coffee. While resveratrol does not change the flavor of coffee, it does enhance its smoothness.

In order to derive the benefits of resveratrol, it must be consumed daily. Most people do not consume red wine every day, but nearly 80% of adults drink coffee and most of them drink it every day, making coffee the perfect alternative. In addition to heart healthy resveratrol, cannabidiol (CBD) is also infused for overall wellness. CBD is used to relieve anxiety, alleviate pain and reduce inflammation, among other health benefits.

Dr. Glen Miller, founder and Chief Technology Officer at Vera Roastingstates,"CBD is regarded as a relatively stable botanical, but it does lose potency over time, as it degrades. The CBD in Vera Roasting's coffee is protected from premature oxidation by resveratrol.

It is very exciting to offer the widely accepted health benefits of red wine to consumers with our Acqua CBD Coffee, stated Jordan Starkman, CEO of Rimrock Gold. We believe CBD will become a prominent wellness ingredient within the functional beverage space, and Veras unique ability to infuse resveratrol and CBD into high quality coffee beans makes our Acqua CBD Coffee the perfect product to introduce to consumers.

The Companys immediate plan is to begin the marketing of the Acqua CBD Coffee directly to consumers through its newly launched e-commerce platform acquacbdcoffee.com.

The Company would also like to announce that the new and refreshed Acqua Cannabis website will be relaunched in the coming weeks. The updated website includes changes to navigation, structure, and overall appearance with mobile and desktop versions. The new website address will be http://www.acquacannabis.com.

Paranormal wine: Space and wine x2 – Aspen Daily News

I once met a couple who was dining at the restaurant where I was pouring wine. When I finished the welcome and the order, and I had placed a glass of red wine in front of the woman, the man said that she had a trick, and implored me to ask her to show it to me. Turns out, she was in recovery from head trauma as a result of a car accident, and shyly, she said she now has the ability to make the molecular structure of the contents of a glass of wine fall apart.

Normally, Im pretty into this kind of paranormal stuff, but I feigned a sort of ennui, lack of interest and gave a less than enthusiastic response, something like: OK, but, um, why would you want to do that? So she proceeded to assume the position, cupping her hands fully and firmly around the glass and thus commenced her practice of destroying the wine. The man then urged me to smell it. As it put my nose to it, he blurted out: See!?

It totally smelled like wine to me.

Bottles in space:

I started thinking about that strange encounter yesterday after a morning scroll through the interwebs pointed me to a news story in the Nov. 5 edition of Decanter Magazine called, Bordeaux Wine Fired Into Space To Test Ageing.

The author of the piece, Chris Mercer, announced: A Northrop Grumman rocket blasted off from a NASA launchpad in Virginia on 2 November, sending the Bordeaux wines into space among 3,700kg of research and supply cargo that also included a zero-gravity baking oven.

He continues with the quip that (sadly): The wines were not part of the International Space Stations Christmas dinner planning; researchers hope to study how radiation in space affects the ageing process.

The wine a case of unspecified red Bordeaux will spend a year aboard the Cygnus spaceship, as part of a joint study by the University of Bordeauxs ISW Wine Institute and Space Cargo Unlimited. The wine will rest untouched (by hand or mouth) at 18 degrees Celsius, which is just above cellar temp, perhaps so the wine can be in a more dynamic temperature for ageing, more exposure to falling apart. Im again thinking of my lady from the story with that apparent skill. An identical case of red Bordeaux will be held here on Earth in the same conditions as a controlled sample.

Mercer quotes Emmanuel Etcheparre, co-founder of Space Cargo Unlimited speaking to Frances SudOuest newspaper: Ageing wine incorporates some of the essential elements of the terrestrial biological ecosystem, such as yeasts, bacteria, crystals, colloids and polyphenols.

The study will focus on how these elements mainly the tannins and other solids involved in ageing wine will behave at zero gravity and with different forces of radiation at play.

Red planet, red wine:

After reading this article, I looked back at some of Mercers other works and found more on the same subject: Wine in space. Seems he is like the Patrick McGovern of wine and space. McGovern, you might know from some of my writing, is a celebrated biomolecular archeologist and anthropologist at the Penn Museum, often called the Indiana Jones of ancient ales, wines, and extreme beverages, uncovering things like the history of fermented drink and the ingredients of the Midas Feast.

In his Decanter Magazine article Could Red Wine Help Power A Mission To Mars? from July 19, Mercer asks that question, though it is not about powering a rocketship with our favorite juice, though that does sound like a really cool idea. Maybe a good use for all of that excess bulk wine just sitting around Napa, Sonoma and the Central Valley at the moment.

Rather, the study looks to a key compound in red wine as a possible superfood or nutritional support for long journeys into space. The compound in question is resveratrol, which has long been thought to be the healing grace of red wine, blessing human imbibers with everything from healthy skin and hearts to longevity. For this particular study, the focus is the possibility that resveratrol may help astronauts (and perhaps future civilian space travelers) maintain bone and muscle mass while on Mars.

Not so fast, as Mercer again spoils our wildest dreams of a Bordeaux-and-Burgundy party in space: However, its unlikely that astronauts will be loading up their space shuttle with Chteau Anglus or Romane-Conti for a daily toast on the red planet. The amount of red wine needed to get one gram of resveratrol per day would be anywhere from 505 to 2,762 liters of red wine. The participants in the study, again, sadly, will be administered resveratrol in concentrated supplements.

No red wine pills here, and as I type, the wine is piling up, with Thanksgiving just around the corner. Ill be blowing that horn of plenty in the next few editions of Wine Reveals Truth.

Cheers! Remember, wine reveals truth.

With potential antioxidant capabilities, personal care and cosmetic products containing resveratrol remain highly-favored by customers for attaining the desirable anti-aging effects. However, the shorter duration of resveratrols efficacy is denting consumer confidence, which is posing challenges vis--vis its adoption in skin care products.

Ambiguities over Health Benefits of Resveratrol Denting Consumer Confidence

While favorable studies vouch for the multimodal benefits of resveratrol, specific side-effects are likely to trigger a slowdown in the adoption rate. For instance, as per a recent revelation by National Institute of Health (NIH) in May 2018, resveratrol might cause potential effects, such as headache, nausea, fatigue, and so on. Furthermore, some research findings have also pinpointed that resveratrol can cause supplement-drug interactions with anticoagulants and estrogens, which is further expected to hinder the adoption rate of resveratrol.

Europe is likely to show strong growth over the forecast timeline, notably driven by strategic mergers and acquisitions by leading players to expand their product portfolio with resveratrol-based offerings. For instance, Evolva, a Swiss-based biotech company, launched Veri-teTM, an exclusive resveratrol ingredient, which bought a substantial hike in the companys overall sales revenue.

Bordeaux wine launched to the International Space Station for science – ZME Science

Almost 4 tons of scientific experiments and precious cargo headed for the International Space Station were launched aboard a Northrop Grumman rocket recently from a NASA launchpad in Virginia. Among them, astronauts unloaded a zero-gravity baking oven but also 12 bottles of Bordeaux wine. Unfortunately, the astronauts wont be enjoying the fine French wine for their Christmas dinner. Instead, the bottles are part of a science experiment meant to assess how radiation and microgravity affect aging.

The experiment is part of a broader project involving several universities and a startup called Space Cargo Unlimited. The wine will be stored in a controlled environment, known as the Complex Microbiological System (CommuBioS), aboard the space station.

The 12 bottles will be stored at exactly 18 degrees Celsius for one year before being returned to earth where their quality will be compared to a control sample that was kept at the same temperature (widely considered the optimal temperature for aging wine).

Wine is a chemically complex liquid, which contains polyphenols, crystals, and tannins. And since microgravity is known to affect sedimentation and bubble dispersion, scientists expect that the wine stored on the ISS will experience an increase in reaction surface. This might lead to the formation of secondary metabolites that will influence the colloids and polyphenols found in wine. Ultimately, these physical and chemical changes should dramatically alter the taste of the wine.

The insights gained from this study might have important applications in food science. It could, for instance, improve the long-term storage of food and drink (both on earth and in space) or offer insights into how agriculture might adapt to climate change. For example, previous studies suggest that resveratrol, a component of wine, may limit the effects of space radiation.

Its not the first time that wine has been sent to space. Chteau Lynch-Bages saw its 1975 vintage launched into spaceaboard NASAs Discovery shuttle in 1985, returning to earth in 2015.

Martinis named vice chancellor for research and innovation – University of Illinois News Bureau

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. Susan Martinis has been named the vice chancellor for research and innovation at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, pending approval by the Board of Trustees. Martinis had served in an interim role since September 2017.

The appointment was announced today in a message from Chancellor Robert Jones to the university community. Martinis succeeded Peter Schiffer in the role.

When I first announced that Professor Martinis would serve as interim vice chancellor for research, I said she had earned a reputation at Illinois as a collaborative scholar and consultative leader who gets work done, Jones said. That reputation has only grown in the past two years. She has been a strong and innovative leader for our Illinois research enterprise, and we are thrilled to see her take on the role.

As interim vice chancellor for research, Martinis oversaw the evolution of three large-scale initiatives: the Cancer Center at Illinois and the Center for Social and Behavioral Sciences became the eighth and ninth universitywide research centers, while the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities is on track to become an Illinois Board of Higher Education-approved institute. She also led the transition of the oversight of Research Park and EnterpriseWorks from the University of Illinois System to the Urbana-Champaign campus, was named the senior leadership point-of-contact for the Discovery Partners Institute and the Illinois Innovation Network, and chairs the Chancellors Economic Development Advisory Group.

Martinis also oversaw strengthening of the business infrastructure that supports the Illinois research community, uniting pre- and post-award functions under one administrative umbrella and implementing an electronic proposal-routing system.

She earned a B.S. in biochemistry from Washington State University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry at Illinois. Martinis trained at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as an American Cancer Society Postdoctoral Fellow, then worked to launch the startup biotechnology company Cubist Pharmaceuticals until moving to her first academic position at the University of Houston in 1997.

Martinis joined the Illinois faculty in 2005 as an associate professor of biochemistry. In 2009, she advanced to professor and department head; in 2015, she was named the Stephen G. Sligar Professor in the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology, a professorship she will continue to hold.

The Risks of Nootropic Use – Psychology Today

Source: Image by the author

Nootropicsfor example, caffeinearecompounds that,if used correctly, are safeand can enhance your cognitive performance and mood.

You can develop tolerance to some nootropics if you dont cycle them. Its even possible to develop an addiction to some. If you have a history of substance abuse, I would suggest you start only with the less potent ones. For example,N-acetylcysteine can help against addictions.

A criterion for a compound to be a nootropic is that the compound should have no risk of addiction if used right. This is not true for certain compounds that some regard as nootropics. Examples of compounds that are risky, especially if you have a history of substance abuse, are Modafinil, Phenibut, caffeine, and Tianepeptine.

The dose makes the poison Paracelsus

In the initial phase of getting to know the effects of a compound on your body and mind, you should experiment very carefully. Take it slow in the early stages of your exploration.Research the individual compoundand be present to what is happening in your body and mind upon consumption.

The goal of nootropic use for most people is to enhance your psyche, not only the underlying biochemistry. Lets find out what can go wrong in pursuing that.

The risk is that any good effects you feel are placebo, which means youre really just wasting your money. I would argue thatyou are the placebo, though, which entails the fact that placebo effects are as real as non-placeboones.

On the other hand, its better to find things that work on the biochemical level over the long term. Nootropics vary widely in their efficacy throughout the human population.

For example, one particular SNP (gene variation)Single Nucleotide Polymorphismalters the efficacy of Modafinil on the user.

The SNP rs4680 has been linked to the production of an enzyme that breaks down dopamine in the prefrontal cortex. If your SNP variant is GG you will have the best response to Modafinil. If youre AGyou will have an intermediate response, and if youre AA you will have a less notable result.

I had my gene test, and my variant is AG, which means I would respond, though not very strongly (comparatively), to Modafinil. (I will write about genetic testing for biohacking purposes in a later post.)

The example of the SNP rs4680 and Modafinil illustrates that we all react differently to what were exposed to. Thats true both for the biochemical and psychological constituents of our minds. Genetic testing is one method for finding out how you react on the biochemical level. Psychological reactions can be indicative of your biochemical reaction.

Psychological problems are not something you can be completely guarded against, whether you use nootropics or not.

Many nootropics can help people with various psychological conditions, for example, depression and anxiety. The risk you expose yourself to is dependent on which nootropics you use, and most of all,how you use them.

If you have prior psychiatric conditions, you have to be extra cautious. Nootropics can be more useful for people with cognitive impairment, or people with ADHD, than people without psychiatric conditions. But the mind and biochemical state of people with psychiatric conditions are often already full of both medications and psychological problems.

Ive gained a lot in my ability to engineer my experience away from psychological problems and psychiatric conditions from reading a lot of books concerning psychiatry, psychology, and mental disorders. While it is good for me in the long term to have explored those waters, it wasnt a pleasant process. It was very humbling and I discovered how little has to go wrong for a person to end up in a bad place.

In my experience, the most challenging experiences psychologically have been some of the most growth-inducing ones. If you recover from a psychologically problematic state and reflect on what happened, you will have new perspectives and develop as a person. You will understand nootropics better, you will understand your own psyche better, and you will understand the human psyche better.

Having agrowth mindsethas been crucial in helping me make sure all the negative effects I ever had from nootropic use were short-term and solvable.

If you get cognitive problems or experience side effects from nootropics, it can definitely affect your career and relationships. Neither themindnor the biochemical building blocks of which it is made exist in a vacuum; they interact with their environment. Naturally, you will have difficulty performing if youre experiencing psychological problems.

In my opinion, nootropics used well can help solve most problems you may have with social anxiety. If you do suffer from social anxiety, please know this: Youre an animal, youre conditioned, and you can recondition yourself. Nootropics can help you to smoothly start exposing yourself to what was once outside your comfort zone. Lets say you boost your calm with ashwagandha and have to make a public speech. For the long term, it is better for your confidence, career, and abilities to have done it well. In my experience, the memory formation of how your public speech went is stronger than what nootropics you take.

You can use nootropics to get into new habitual ways of being and continue to live the same way after stopping the use of the nootropic.

I cannot stress this point enough: Nootropics should give you benefits and no significant side effects. I believe you can boost your odds of achievingthis by being aware of the risks and experimentingcautiously.

Theres limited research on most nootropic compounds, and, for some, the best source of knowledge is peoples personal experience.

There are somenootropics with an inverse riskthat have a lot of scientific evidence of being harmless. If you experiment with the most potent pharmaceutical nootropics, there is a risk that you maycreate long-term problems for yourselfby doingsome real damage to your DNA, or by some otherunknownmechanism.

My personal philosophy on the more potent ones is to use only some of them, the ones in which I see the least risk and biggest rewards. I only use these for special occasions. I never use them two days in a row and am conservative in using them at all.

I'm not concerned with changes in life expectancy as a result of using these nootropics. I believeIve already increased my life expectancy way above average by deliberatelyexercising, eating, meditating, and sleeping.

Technology is evolving at a rapid pace. Theres a great chance that any harm onemay do will be fixable when the problem arises.

Im fully aware I could end up with health problems from using nootropics the wrong way. Theres a big difference between the possibility and probability of that happening, though. Im doing everything in my power to reduce the probability.

The unknown anduncertaintyentail an inherent risk for problems. Were more or less programmedto be anxious and fearful of the unknown by our genes. It served us well on the savanna. Unless we develop deliberate, intentional strategies for handling this fearwe will stay in our comfort zones, at the expense of our well-being and self-actualization.

Being anti-fragile meansgainingfrom disorders or problems. If youre mindful and aware of whats going on in your mind when you take nootropics instead ofbeing inside whats going on, you will become robust or anti-fragile to it.Whether or not you can detach is biochemically dependent. Our ability to embrace uncertainty is constantly changing. It is in itself uncertain. Should we accept that?

Should we embrace the uncertainty of our constantly changing ability to embrace uncertainty? My personal opinion is that, no, I dont want to spend hours every day practicing mindfulness to possibly get into a state of mind thatembraces uncertainty.

Its simply more economical time-wise and results-wise to work with your body deliberately, for example, by usingnootropics that work well for you specifically, in contrast to going with the flow of your body'sfluctuations and mishaps.

Biohackingdoes not entail going against your own nature; on the contrary, it involves re-aligning yourself with your nature (being healthy). I choose to engineer my experience. I do this to optimize cognitive performance and happiness and help others do the same.

But how doyoureduce the probabilities of all of these risks and still reap the benefits of nootropics? Research every compound and experiment slowly. Theres no substitute for knowing the risks and how to mitigate them if you want to biohack safely.

This post is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.

Unlikely gathering of scientists generates extraordinary research team to create the fat free cell – MSUToday

In late February 2019, the National Science Foundation, or NSF, gathered a group of scientists from widely different disciplines who rarely communicate let alone collaborate into one room, provided skilled facilitators to push their ideas to the edge of innovation, then stepped back to see what would happen.

Ideas Labs like these undergird the NSFs $36 million dollar investment in its Understanding the Rules of Life portfolio. Its aim is to accelerate development in two key areas of science and engineering research: building a synthetic cell and epigenetics.

Cheryl Kerfeld, MSU Hannah Distinguished Professor in the MSU-DOE Plant Research Laboratory and Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology attended this particular Ideas Lab outside of Washington, D.C. She explained that what happened was akin to the wheel people getting together with the suitcase people a breakthrough.

Kerfeld will lead this unlikely team of scientists that includes five research groups from universities across the nation in a $3.4 million Rules of Life grant to engineer a synthetic cell.

Kerfelds Rules of Life team members are: Christine Keating, professor of chemistry from Penn State University; Millie Sullivan, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering from the University of Delaware; Vincent Noireaux, professor of physics from the University of Minnesota; Giovanna Ghirlanda, professor of chemistry from Arizona State University; and Barbara Harthorn, professor of anthropology from the University of California Santa Barbara.

We are going to take building blocks from different scientific disciplines that would never naturally get together physics, biology and materials chemistry to build a functional, multi-compartmental and fat-free cell, or ProteoCell, Kerfeld said. Outside of the Ideas Lab context, we never would have self-assembled into a team, and it never would have occurred to me to build a cell without lipids.

Although the first and fundamental goal of the project is to make a synthetic cell without lipids, the project also has significant implications in the production of biomaterials and biofuels in the United States.

There are important and introspective questions that need to be asked as we develop new technologies, Kerfeld said. A cell without lipids is highly artificial, and if we are successful, it may lead to a self-propagating system that could be harnessed for industrial applications.

There are ethics around this as well as the fundamental questions that we are asking, like what is life?

With NSFs encouragement and support, the team will also study the societal perceptions of a synthetic cell as well as how engineering a new kind of cell might also change the scientists.

The NSFs Rules of Life is one of the grand challenges of biology, Kerfeld noted, and MSU should be proud that we are leading an elite group of high caliber researchers and faculty able to address these questions.

Biochemical Sensor Market to Witness Heightened Growth During the Period 2018 2025 - Guru Online News

Chemistry teacher "froze in pure shock" after botched experiment injured teen at Redan High School outside Atlanta, report says – CBS News

Atlanta, Georgia A teacher presenting a flashy demonstration to get her students excited about chemistry made a mistake that caused a fire to burn "out of control" and seriously injure a student, says a report released Wednesday. The high school teacher, Bridgette Blowe, "froze in pure shock" when it grew out of control, spread across the desk and set her student in the front row on fire, according to students and staff, CBS Atlanta affiliate WGCL-TV reports.

Staff and students said the student, 16-year-old Malachi McFadden, had his head down and didn't see the flame coming. He suffered third-degree burns on his face, neck and torso and was hospitalized after the botched "burning money demonstration," which happened at Redan High School, just outside Atlanta, on the second day of his junior year, his lawyers said.

On Wednesday, his lawyers released a report by an investigator for the DeKalb County school system that uses witness statements from students and teachers to piece together what happened August 6. They say Blowe didn't provide protective equipment or advise the boy to stand 10 feet away, as mandated, WGCL-TV reported.

Blowe, 36, wrote in a statement included in the report that she's successfully done the demonstration lighting an accelerant-soaked bill on fire in previous years and for two other classes this year. In this particular class, the flame didn't burn out completely, Blowe wrote, "so I attempted to extinguish the flame with water, but I reached for the alcohol instead, by mistake."

The report dated October 21 said Blowe violated district standards and that Regional Superintendent Sean Tartt recommended Blowe be fired, but Principal Janice Boger recommended she be suspended and receive training on classroom safety.

The school district said Wednesday Blowe is on administrative leave with pay, that no disciplinary action has been taken and the district is "reviewing training and safety protocols for its science labs."

Boger called Blowe a good teacher who "made an awful mistake."

L. Chris Stewart, a lawyer for McFadden, said they will likely end up suing for damages to cover his pain and suffering, as well as past and future medical costs, including plastic surgery. "The only thing for them to do is to accept responsibility for it," Stewart said of the school district.

The demonstration Blowe was attempting is popular on the internet and the premise is simple: Soak paper money in a mixture of water and alcohol, light it and amaze your friends when the bill comes through unharmed. But numerous videos also show the experiment going horribly wrong.

Blowe had tried to do the experiment the first day of classes using a mixture of water and alcohol, but it didn't work, according to witness statements. She tried again the next day using a mixture of water and ethanol. After soaking a $5 bill and lighting it, she put it in a bowl and "added more ethanol to make the flame bigger," the investigator concluded. That "caused the flame to become out of control."

Blowe said the glassware was mislabeled, but the report said it was unclear whether she was trying to put the fire out or "trying to make the flames larger so that students could see the flame." The investigator wrote that it was "inconclusive as to whether or not Ms. Blowe's use of water or alcohol was accidental."

Reached by phone Wednesday, Blowe declined to comment.

McFadden told The Associated Press in a September interview that his hands still hurt constantly and he misses playing baritone saxophone in the band along with playing football and basketball. He hopes to return next semester.

He likes math and wants to be an engineer but has never really liked science. He'll have to take chemistry next year to graduate but said he feels nervous about that.

News outlets across the country have reported about students injured in chemistry class demonstrations in recent years, including one at a Manhattan high school that caused burns over about 31% of a student's body in 2014. In July, a jury awarded that student nearly $60 million in damages for past and future pain and suffering.

The problem isn't new, said Ken Roy, chief safety compliance adviser for the National Science Teaching Association. There's no national database that tracks such accidents, but Roy said he has anecdotal knowledge of at least 30 since the late 1990s that have ended up in court after students were seriously injured.

My Chemical Romance Have Returned To The Charts Following The Reunion Announcement – ROCKSOUND.TV

So glad we're all on the same page here.

The world is evidently super hyped at the wholeMy Chemical Romancereunion - not only did they sell out their comeback show immediately, they've also stormed various charts for the week of November 09.

Additionally, My Chem's back catalogue has jumped 10% in streams, and 12% in album units according to Billboard. That translates to over 11.3 million streams of My Chemical Romance songs since the announcement of their reunion. So we're all feeling a bit emo then, huh?

Notably, 10 My Chem tracks have placed in the Billboard Lyric Find Chart, which measures the number of searches for the lyrics of songs, with 'Welcome To The Black Parade' debuting at number five in the chart after seeing a 376% increase in searches for the lyric since last week. 'Helena' followed in at number 10 on the chart, seeing a 257% increase in searches.

My Chemical Romance also debuted at number 41 in the Billboard Social Chart, which measures social media engagement with bands and artists globally - following their reunion announcement, they had over 25,000 hits to their Wikipedia page which is a 132% increase from their standard daily average, plus their official Twitter account gained 59,000 new followers, and the Twitter handle was mentioned over 40,000 times. This marks the first time that MCR have appeared in the Billboard Social Chart since 2016, in the lead up to the 10th anniversary of the release of their classic album 'The Black Parade'.

While all this chart success is impressive, it's anticipated that MCR will climb in the charts next chart week, as their comeback was announced only one day before the close of the current chart week. We've had a whole week of hyping and reminiscing since then.

My Chemical Romance announced their reunion and a comeback show last Thursday, October 31, with their comeback show taking place December 20 in Los Angeles. They've since announced a handful of additional international appearances.

Space Shipment Launched With Sports Car Parts, Cookie Oven – The New York Times

A supply ship rocketed toward the International Space Station on Saturday with sports car parts, an oven for baking cookies and a vest to protect against radiation.

Northrop Grumman launched its Cygnus capsule for NASA from Wallops Island, Virginia. The 8,200-pound shipment (3,700 kilograms) should reach the orbiting lab Monday.

"Good launch all the way around," a ground controller observed.

The space station's astronauts will test the oven by baking chocolate chip cookies and try out the new safety vest to gauge its comfort. Both experiments are seen as precursors to moon and Mars journeys.

Other newly arriving equipment will be used in a series of NASA spacewalks later this month to fix a key particle physics detector. Parked outside the space station since 2011, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer needs new cooling pumps to continue its search for elusive dark matter and antimatter.

Italy's Lamborghini is also along for the ride. It's sending up samples of carbon fiber used in its sports cars for six months of direct space exposure. Researchers are considering the materials for medical implants.

Like space, the insides of a person's body are an extreme environment, explained Houston Methodist's Alessandro Grattoni, who is collaborating with Lamborghini on the experiment. As a nanomedicine specialist, he said Friday he's continuously on the lookout for new materials for devices that are inserted beneath the skin. These minuscule implants release therapeutic drugs to treat cancer, hormone deficiencies and other illnesses.

Northrop Grumman is now controlling two Cygnus capsules in orbit, a first for the Virginia-based company. Named for the swan constellation, the Cygnus launched last spring is flying free of the 250-mile-high (400-kilometer-high) space station, after completing its grocery run. It will be directed to a fiery re-entry sometime in the near future, taking station trash down with it, according to company officials.

The newest Cygnus is officially called the S.S. Alan Bean after the Apollo 12 astronaut who became the fourth man to walk on the moon 50 years ago this month. He later commanded NASA's first space station, Skylab, and became known for his cosmic-themed paintings. He died last year.

NASA has contracted with Northrop Grumman and SpaceX to keep the space station stocked. This is Northrop Grumman's 12th successful Cygnus flight since 2013. The company has upgraded both its Cygnus and Antares rocket to haul more cargo from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility on the eastern Virginia shore.

The space station is currently home to three Americans, two Russians and one Italian.

The tiny shells, which are between 100-200nm or 1,000 times smaller than a human hair, are made from fatty molecules called lipids that form the outer membrane of almost all living cells. In nature, small droplets made from these lipids known as vesicles constantly bud off from the surface of our cells with chemical messages or unwanted materials inside so they can be carried safely to other parts of the body.

Prof. Cauda and her team have tried to copy this by coating their nanocrystals in vesicles produced by cells grown in the lab so they too can pass harmlessly through the body. The surface of the vesicles can also be studded with antibodies against specific cancer cells, helping them to hone in on only the cells they want to kill.

Once a vesicle finds a cancer cell, its antibodies will bind to the surface, allowing the lipids to merge with the cell and releasing the toxic nanocrystal inside. And by growing nanoshells from cells taken from a patients own body, Prof. Cauda believes it will be possible to create personalised treatments that can evade the immune system while still killing cancer cells.

The team have already tested the nanoshell approach against leukaemia cells and cervical cancer in the laboratory. While they hope to be able to perform human trials in the future, Prof. Cauda warned it could still be many years before they reach that stage.

Benefits

If successful, however, this nanomedicine approach could bring benefits compared to traditional chemotherapy treatments by only targeting tumour cells, leaving healthy tissue unaffected and so reducing side-effects.

The nanomedicine approach could offer a site-selective and personalised treatment for the patient, said Prof. Cauda.

This approach, however, still largely relies upon the nanoshells chancing upon the cancer cells as they circulate in the patients bloodstream so they can attach to them.

Another team of researchers are working on nano- and micro-machines that might actively be able to improve this by carrying treatments to the site in the body where they are needed.

Dr Larisa Florea, a materials scientist at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland, is leading a project calledChemLifeto create miniature vehicles that can move by themselves in a liquid.

Chemotaxis

The team is attempting to emulate a form of movement known as chemotaxis, which is employed by some basic microorganisms and enables them to move through solutions from low salinity to high salinity, or from acidic to alkaline solutions, for example.

Other research teams in the US have previously shown that man-made droplets can be very preciselynavigated through complex mazeswith this approach. Dr Florea and her colleagues have sought to extend this by using light to control the movement of droplets.

They have created vesicle-like droplets that pair light sensitive molecules with compounds known as surfactants. Surfactants are commonly found in detergents but are also commonly found in many biological systems.

When exposed to light, the photosensitive molecules react by changing their shape, altering the surface tension on each side of the droplet. This causes the molecules in the droplet to flow from one side to the other, driving it forward, a little like the tread of a tank.

The team have shown they can accurately steer dropletsthrough three dimensional spacesandreach speeds of up to 10.4mm per second(0.02mph).

By adding a photoactive material to a droplet, scientists have been able to control its movement in three dimensions through water using light.

If you compare the speed of the movement to the size of these microdroplets, they are faster, pound for pound, than some of the best swimmers in the world, said Dr Florea.

They have also been able to demonstrate that their droplet-shaped vehicles can carry cargo, delivering it to other droplets to trigger a chemical reaction. It raises hopes that similar methods could be used to deliver drugs or other sorts of treatments to specific cells in the body.

While it may be difficult to use light to navigate a drug-carrying droplet through the body, Dr Florea and her colleagues have also explored using mild electrical currents.

Propel

The team have also been developing more complex micromachines that can swim or crawl through liquids like tiny bacteria. Using highly precise 3D printing techniques, they have beenable to create hydrogel structuresaround a few micrometres in size that can contract and expand to propel a structure forward.

We have been making tiny flower-like structures, for example, that can open and close in response to different stimuli, she said. For example it might open at a certain pH and close at another.

This happens because the hydrogels expand by absorbing water and contract by expelling it according to the pH of the surrounding solution.Dr Florea said they hope to also control the movement of hydrogels with changes in temperature or pulses of light.

The ChemLife team are using these hydrogels to create structures with tiny rotating flagella the tiny tail-like appendages that some bacteria use to propel themselves. They are also creating worm-like structures from the same kind of hydrogels that can crawl along surfaces or through liquids.

The ultimate goal is to have these micro-vehicles perform actions like drug delivery or (chemical) sensing, said Dr Florea. But we have to be realistic that this might not be achieved in the near future as the body is a very difficult environment.

The tiny moving structures could also find uses in other ways too. These include delivering chemicals to better improve industrial reactions or creating soft micro-grippers that could be remotely activated to handle delicate components like cells without damaging them.

When you look at what nature can achieve, the opportunities are endless, added Dr Florea.
