Heart Attack Risk Raised by Respiratory Infections – Anti Aging News

Research findings confirm that a respiratory infection can trigger a heart attack, increasing the risk by 17 times in the 7 days following the infection.

Researchers at the University of Sydney have determined the risk of suffering a heart attack is 17 times higher in the week after a respiratory infection. The study took place at Royal North Shore Hospital. The findings were recently published in the Internal Medicine Journal. It is the first study to show a link between respiratory infections like bronchitis, influenza and pneumonia and a heightened risk of heart attack in individuals confirmed through coronary angiography. Coronary angiography is an X-Ray that pinpoints artery blockages in the heart.

Why the Findings Matter

The findings are of significance as they confirm that respiratory infections can serve as a trigger for heart attacks. The study's data showed that a heightened risk for heart attack does not solely occur at the beginning of the respiratory symptoms. The risk peaks in the first week and slowly decreases. However, it is elevated for a full month.

About the Study

The study involved nearly 600 consecutive patients who suffered a heart attack as a result of a coronary artery blockage. They provided information on recent and common occurrences of respiratory infection symptoms. Just over 20 percent of the patients reported respiratory infection symptoms within the first month of their heart attack. Exactly 17 percent of the patients reported respiratory infection symptoms within a week of the heart attack.

Each subject was questioned about his activities prior to the onset of the heart attack. These interviews included questions about whether they endured recent flu-like sickness with a sore throat and/or fever. If a subject reported a cough, sore throat, sinus pain, fever or flu-like symptoms, he was considered to be affected. The same is true of those who reported a diagnosis of bronchitis or pneumonia.

Another analysis was performed amongst those with symptoms limited to the upper respiratory tract. These symptoms included sinusitis, rhinitis, pharyngitis and the common cold. Subjects who reported fairly mild infection symptoms of the upper respiratory tract endured less risk. However, this risk was still boosted 13-fold.

Though upper respiratory infections are not as severe, they are more common than the symptoms of lower respiratory tract infections. The research group desired to understand their relationship to the risk of heart attacks. This information is especially important during the winter. Heart attacks tend to occur at higher rates in the winter months in countries around the world. Part of the reason for this increase is due to an elevation of respiratory infections during the colder months. Medical professionals far and wideadvise people to take precautions to minimize exposure to infection, whether it is a pneumonia vaccine, flu vaccine or other measures.

Why Respiratory Infections Trigger Heart Attacks

Though no one is completely certain why respiratory infections cause heart attacks, researchers point to the fact that blood clots occur at a higher frequency when one has a respiratory infection. There is also an increased tendency for other alterations in blood flow, inflammation, and toxins harming blood vessels. However, the odds of a single episode of a respiratory infection causing a heart attack are low. Yet it is still possible for such an infection to cause a coronary event.

Everyone should consider preventative strategies and take note of the symptoms that are an indication of a heart attack. As time progresses, medical professionals will eventually pinpoint effective treatment strategies to minimize the risk of heart attacks. This is especially important for those who face a higher susceptibility to heart attacks.

Actor Antonio Sabato Touting Hormone Therapy – Newsmax

First author objects to retraction (his fourth) in chemistry journal – Retraction Watch (blog)

The first author of a 2013 chemistry paper is objecting to his co-authors decision to retract the paper, which contains duplicated figures.

We recently encountered a similar scenario with papers byfirst author Khalid Mahmood. In late 2015, Mahmood lost three papers in the journal ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces over duplicated images. One of thenotices also indicated that the figures hadbeen published elsewhere and identified with different samples the same language used in the notice of the most recent retraction, in Journal of Materials Chemistry C.

Mahmood performed the work on thepapers at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), along with histwoco-authors, Seung Bin Park and Hyung Jin Sung (also co-authors on two of the retracted papers in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces).

Seung Bin Park, who is dean of the College of Engineering at KAIST, told us:

I was deeply disappointed and distressed by this retraction It was a period of time when joy of sharing new findings turned into nightmare.

Park said he did not know why Mahmood opposedthis retraction, but noted:

I just hope that, someday, he comes out and gives explanation on his papers.He owes apology to his colleague[s].

Taking Ritalin to study may change brain chemistry – Futurity: Research News

For young people who dont have ADHD, recreationally taking Ritalin may lead to changes in brain chemistry associated with risk-taking behavior, sleep disruption, and other undesirable effects, a new study suggests.

Ritalin, the brand name for methylphenidate, a central nervous system stimulant used to treat ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), is a growing problem among college students who use it without a prescription as a so-called study enhancer. The drug works by increasing the concentration of certain neurotransmitters in the brain that control reasoning, problem solving, and other behaviors.

Although Ritalins effectiveness in treating ADHD is well-documented, few studies have looked at the drugs effect on non-prescribed illicit use, says Panayotis (Peter) Thanos, senior research scientist at the Research Institute on Addictions at the University at Buffalo. We wanted to explore the effects of this stimulant drug on the brain, behavior, and development on non-ADHD subjects.

Recent studies put college students nonprescription use of stimulant drugs (Ritalin and amphetamines such as Adderall and Dexedrine) at rates anywhere between 14 and 38 percent, depending on the type of college and age of student. The common belief is that these drugs can help students to focus and concentrate when studying and perform better on tests. Alarmingly, these drugs are finding their way into high schools, as well, for the same reasons.

Thanos team looked at changes in the brains of rats who received regular doses of methylphenidate during what would be equivalent to adolescence in humans, a time of significant brain growth and development.

We saw changes in the brain chemistry in ways that are known to have an impact on the reward pathway, locomotor activity, and other behaviors, as well as effects on body weight, Thanos says.

These changes in brain chemistry were associated with serious concerns such as risk-taking behaviors, disruptions in the sleep/wake cycle, and problematic weight loss, as well as resulting in increased activity and anti-anxiety and antidepressive effects.

Further research indicated that female subjects were more sensitive to the behavioral effects of methylphenidate than the males.

Thanos hopes that studying the effects of methylphenidate on those without ADHD may lead to a greater understanding of how the drug works on the brain and behavior, and can help researchers understand the impact of the drug on young people throughout development.

Understanding more about the effects of methylphenidate is also important as people with ADHD show greater risk to be diagnosed with a drug dependency problem, Thanos says. In addition, this study highlights the potential long-range risks college students take in using Ritalin for a quick study boost.

This research appeared in the Journal of Neural Transmission in May and in Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience in March.

The New York State Research Foundation and the National Institute of Child Health & Human Development of the National Institutes of Health funded Thanos research. Coauthors are David Komatsu of Stony Brook University and Michael Hadjiargyrou of the New York Institute of Technology.

#ValleyMusicals: Friendship helps Line Mountain couple’s chemistry – Sunbury Daily Item

The students in the lead couples roles in Line Mountains production of Oklahoma this year didnt have to pretend too much when it came to acting like they liked each other.

Weve been friends since third grade, said senior Sam Ferster, who played Curly, the lead character along with Laurey, played by senior Tori Duffy. Weve participated in musicals and marching band together for quite a while now. Weve become pretty good friends.

Its not their first time in lead roles or playing a couple.

For example, last year, they played Cinderella and the Prince in Line Mountains production of Cinderella.

But it was in eighth grade when they began working closely together in their school productions. Thats when Tori played Annie in Annie. and Sam played Daddy Warbucks.

I knew their senior year they needed to grow, said director Dana Brown. And with so much experience, I knew that putting them together would be no problem, because they would take on the job.

Tori said working together as the lead couple in Oklahoma felt natural.

Sam and I have a very playful, teasing friendship, which you can see in Curly and Laureys relationship as well.

I think they both knew they were going to have to go on a personal level to be able to create that love between Curly and Laurey, said director Dana Brown. Their friendship off stage helped with that, but also making sure they were prepared, even before they came onto stage. They did their homework, read their script and made sure they were ready to portray all the different sides of Curly and Laurey together.

Sam said he especially enjoyed the songs Oh What a Beautiful Morning and Surry With a Fringe on Top in the beginning scene songs on which he got to interact with Tori.

Sam is wonderful to work with, and I am blessed that he has been my opposite for all these years, as well as one of my best friends, Tori said.

Taking on the roles

Sam described the character of Curly as a bit cocky, but For the most part, he was a gentleman.

And aside from having naturally curly hair that he let grow longer than usual for this role, thats the part he said he related to the most.

His characteristics are sort of like how I am in real life, he said. I didnt have to prepare a whole lot.

Brown agrees.

For example, Curly, she said, is a cow man who is a little full of himself, and was going to make sure that he got the girl.

While Sam is very humble in everything he does, she said, he wants to make sure he achieves all the goals that he has. It wasnt hard at all he knew what he wanted in the musical.

Tori said she auditioned for Laurey and was excited to play her.

She is a character unlike any I have ever played, and I was excited to take on this role, she said.

Tori said she recognized Laurey as your stereotypical farm girl, but also very independent and relies on only herself for her happiness.

When things begin to change and she develops feelings for Curly, she becomes uneasy and almost pushes him away, she said

Brown said the character of Laurey is a little hard to understand sometimes. She doesnt know if she wants to be with Curly, or let him walk out of her life. Tori was very capable of bringing both of those sides of Laurey onto the stage.

Looking ahead

Sam plans to attend Potomac State College in West Virginia for an associates degree in sustainable agriculture entrepreneurship. Hes considering either joining chorus or doing some theater there. But since he has siblings still attending Line Mountain, he said he expecting to be back to help in future years.

Tori plans to attend Kent State University in Ohio to major in zoology, with a pre-vet track. She also plans to continue making theatre a part of her life.

Biotechnology is a modern science tool used by most countries to improve agricultural productivity, thereby eliminating hunger and ensuring food security for their populace.

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) is one of the components of biotechnology which is a science tool used to engineer the genes of plants to make them behave in the manner of which they were engineered for.

GMOs have become a topical issue in Nigeria since the country have had problem of providing enough food for the populace. Recently, famine was reported to have reached some parts of the northern Nigeria.

In the quest to ensure food security in the country, some experts have called on the Nigerian government to adopt the new technology of GMOs to increase productivity.

In Nigeria, GMOs have received some criticisms from some groups, arguing the safety of the crops which the genes have been engineered.

Meanwhile, some scientists have said that the GM seeds are like other conventional seeds and does not contain any harmful or toxic contents.

Recently, the Open Forum of Agricultural Biotechnology (OFAB) gathered professionals to brainstorm on how best to convey the message of science to Nigerians.

In Nigeria, farmers who will be the users of this technology if it is adopted in the country are yet to know about the technology, most of them have not heard of the technology.

The Country Coordinator of OFAB, Dr Rose Gidado during the Agricultural Biotechnology and Biosafety Workshop for Professional Bodies Cadre, said the Forum had carried the biotechnology campaign to farmers.

She said the workshop is expected to expand the scope of OFAB and build the capacity of the participants, so that they can understand what the biotechnology is all about.

According to her the objective of the workshop is that we are trying to expand our scope, we are trying to build the capacity of the participants because science is multi faceted, so they need to understand better what we are doing so that they can join in the campaign for GMOs in Nigeria.

Gidado also said that other professional bodies are needed in the campaign, having in mind the huge benefits of this technology to Nigerian populace and the economy.

We need other professional bodies to join us in this campaign because it is all about science. This technology is all about science, it is evidence based, it is important, it can contribute to the socio-economic of Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the Director-General of the National Agricultural Seed Council, Dr Philip Ojo said before the introduction of any Genetically Modified seeds, the local capacity needs to be built.

In this light, the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA), had recently trained about 20 staff of the National Agricultural Seed Council on how to identify or detect GMOs.

The Director General of NABDA, Professor Lucy Ogbadu said Nigeria cannot afford to ignore the technology, adding that another technology which may be more acceptable to Nigerians have been discovered.

She said the new technology which is called gene editing allows the scientist to work within the confines of one genetic material instead of transferring genes from one organism to another.

We cannot afford to ignore this technology, in fact, so much advances have gone beyond where we started on genetic modification, they developed what is called gene editing and we hope that gene editing will be more acceptable to Nigeria.

Explaining what gene editing is, Professor Ogbadu said we are working within the confines of the genetic materials of one organism; we are not bringing in anything from outside into the organism, so we hope that this will be more acceptable to our people.

On the acceptability of the technology, Dr Gidado said the acceptance level in Nigeria is encouraging, more people are talking for the technology, people are beginning to see why we need it.

She further said that they are carrying the farmers along in their campaign, adding that in 2 or 3 years time, the commercialisation of BT cotton and BT cowpea will commence.

One of the environmental advantage of this technology is that less chemicals and pesticides will be used in the farm, leading to less pollution of the environment with fertilizers and chemicals.

Professor Ogbadu in her presentation a the workshop said the technology has increased environmental protection through the reduced use of pesticides and toxic chemicals.

She also said GMOs improves nutrition for people, increase quality of yields, increase farm profitability through reduced cost and new product opportunity.

Much have been said about this technology, some countries have adopted this technology and used it to advance their food production. It is important that the Nigerian government look for other means to upscale our food production.

GMOs among other biotechnology is a scientific method to improve food production in Nigeria, increase yield and practice agriculture as a business, which will in turn put money in the bags of farmers and contribute the nations GDP.

iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology ETF (IBB): The Quick Guide to IBB … – Investorplace.com

Biotechnology is one of the more tempting and complex areas of the broader healthcare sector investing. However, stock-picking in this space is tricky, which has made biotechnology exchange-traded funds popular with investors. The most popular as well as the largest biotechnology ETF is the iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology Index (ETF) (NASDAQ:IBB).

The $8.2 billion IBBtracks the Nasdaq Biotechnology Index. The funddebuted in 2001, and currently holds 162 stocks.

While IBB has a deep bench relative to other biotechnology ETFs, investors should look under the hood to ensure this is the type of biotech fund they want to be involved with.

For example, investors often hear about biotechnology stocks that deliver jaw-dropping short-term gains on the back of favorable Food & Drug Administration (FDA) news. Then there are the biotechcompanies that are able to prove durable over time, delivering stellar returns for investors for years on end.

(NASDAQ:GILD), Biogen Inc(NASDAQ:BIIB) and Amgen, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMGN) combine for nearly 31% of IBBs roster as of this writing.

Another issue to consider with IBB and biotech stocks is that the sector historically trades at valuations that are in excess of that of the healthcare sector and the broader market. Even when biotechnology is cheap by its standards, the group is likely still pricier than healthcare and broader equities benchmarks.

Volatility is also a consideration, as biotechnology stocks are more volatile than the healthcare sector. IBBs three-year standard deviation is 24.2% compared to an equivalent healthcare ETF from the iShares roster with a three-year standard deviation of 13.1%, according to issuer data.

Helped by its emphasis on large-cap biotechnology stocks, the ETF is heavily traded, sports robust liquidity and tight spreads. Those factors help minimize transaction costs and total cost of ownership.

IBB also charges 0.47% per year, or $47 annually on a $10,000 investment.

Mice whose ovaries were removed and replaced with an artificial structure were able to have offspring naturally, scientists have revealed in a breakthrough that could lead to the holy grail of bioengineering in humans.

The ovarystructurewas 3D-printed using gelatin to create a latticethat could house follicles containing the eggs.

The researchers said the new technique could one day be used to restore fertility to women rendered infertile by cancer treatment.

And they also suggested it could also help design a range of artificial organs that could be used instead of transplants from dead people, which require the patient to take immune-suppressing drugs for the rest of their lives.

One of the researchers, Professor Teresa Woodruff, of Northwestern University in the US, said: Using bioengineering, instead of transplanting from a cadaver, to create organ structures that function and restore the health of that tissue for that person, is the holy grail of bioengineering for regenerative medicine.

The exciting part of this new discovery is that we are going to be able to build ovaries that we hope one day will help restore fertility to young cancer survivors as well as children going through puberty who have been treated with life-preserving cancer treatments but are going to be sterilised by that same treatment.

We have never had a way to provide back that fertility. We can protect their fertility but weve not been able to restore it.

What that means is they are going to have endocrine function endocrine hormones like oestrogen and progesterone and they are going to have the ability to have their own children one day.

Thats the real promise of this technology.

She said the prosthetic ovaries had been showed to have a long-term, durable function.

Crucially, the mice with the prosthetic ovaries produced milk in the normal way as a result of the normal hormonalchanges in their body.

A paper in the journal Nature Communications said ovarian function had been fully restored in surgically sterilized mice.

The techniques developed here are the necessary first steps to validate the significant undertaking of exploring such an approach for creating a human bioprosthetic ovary, the paper added.

Live birth was achieved with the implant alone; angiogenic growth factors [used to encourage new blood vessels], hormone stimulation and embryo transfer were not required.

The resulting pups from the bioprosthetic ovary developed normally with their own reproductive competency, as they were all able to sire or deliver healthy litters.

However the researchers cautioned that further work was required to establish whether the synthetic ovary would function in the same way in humans and that there was not a risk of cancerous cells.

This bioprosthetic ovary may become a promising solution for restoring hormone and fertility function in oncofertility [cancer] patients, the paper said.

Outside of reproductive biology, our findings will likely impact others developing tissue units and underscore the importance of independently investigating the impact of architectural variables when designing scaffolds for other soft tissue and organ targets.

Gelatin is a hydrogel made from collagen, which is found in humans bones and skin and is safe to use inside the body.

Professor Ramille Shah, an expert in materials science at Northwestern, said: Most hydrogels are very weak, since they're made up of mostly water, and will often collapse on themselves.

But we found a gelatin temperature that allows it to be self-supporting, not collapse, and lead to building multiple layers. No one else has been able to print gelatin with such well-defined and self-supported geometry.

She added that the study was also the first to show that the scaffold architecture makes a difference in the survival of ovarian follicles, which each contain a single egg.

In some cancer patients, the ovaries do not function at a high enough level and hormone replacement therapy is required.

Dr Jane Stewart, the chair-elect of the British Fertility Society, said the paper sounds really exciting.

They have managed to create a matrix in which they can embed ovarian tissue and theyve then managed to implant that back in a mouse and made it work, she said.

From a human point of view we are way off being able to use that in clinical practice, but its a step towards that.

Dr Stewart said this technique still required the existence of ovarian follicles containing eggs.

But other researchers are working on ways to produce these from stem cells, which could eventually allow the artificial construction of a complete ovary with eggs genetically related to the woman.

She said ovarian tissue was currently removed from cancer patients and then grafted back to allow them to have children.

But eggs were lost during the process and the artificial ovarian structure might help reduce this, allowing the women to have children naturally, rather than requiring IVF.

Being a doctor at Grey Sloane (formerly Seattle Grace/Seattle Grace Mercy West) Hospital ain't easy. Sure, everybody is incredibly hot, and each physician performs miracles on a daily basis, but the staff also has the bad luckof being killed off tragically. On Grey's Anatomy, the latest possible casualty to start her shift and not ever clock out (or punch out using the big time clock in the sky) is Dr. Stephanie Edwards. Edwards is the Top Gun of surgical residents, the best of the best, but the words "bright future" took on a whole new meaning when, at the end of episode 23, "True Colors," Edwards was caught in an explosion ignited by one burning, homicidal maniac and some oxygen tanks. Why She's Dead

After being taken hostage by a rapist, Edwards found herself trapped on a floor of the hospital with the man, Keith, and a young girl, Erin, when the hospital was put on lockdown. In a last-ditch effort to escape, Keith decided to light a fire to trigger the sprinklers and open a door. To save herself and Erin, Edwards doused Keith with some flammable liquid, and took cover with the girl in a nearby room. But Keith inconveniently decided to drop dead near some oxygen tanks, forcing Edwards to try and derail the inevitable outcome.

The last viewers saw, a hugeexplosion threw Edwards backwards. If Edwards survived the blast, she's still trapped in a burning building, likely unconscious, in serious need of medical attention and second in line to be rescued behind a child.

The whole scenario was outlandish anyway, but for Edwards to escape two near-death experiences is unlikely. At least this way, Edwards gets to be a hero.

Why She's Alive

Yes, some doctors have been electrocuted, shot and mangled beyond repair, but others survived a drowning, a brain tumor and cancer. Callie Torres, Cristina Yang and Preston Burke all moved on to greener pastures as opposed to the great beyond, leaving the hospital on their feet as opposed toin abody bag.

It's almost a foregone conclusion that Edward's is dead, which is why she could live. Her predicament couldserve asa distraction as some other beloved character unexpectedly meets an unfortunate end. Shonda does love surprises!

It would be brutal to kill off Edwards, who prevailed over sickle-cell disease in her childhood andhas gone on tobecome a promising surgeon. If Edwards is rescued, she's going to be severely traumatized (andprobably not real pretty)which would pave the way for her to exit to get some much-needed counseling and skin grafting. Maybe she'll move on to a hospital where the death toll for the docs isn't quite so high. Either way, the door would remain open for Edwards to return.

StaTuesday: Anatomy of Twins’ home run streak – FOXSports.com

The Minnesota Twins might not be baseballs most powerful team, but they might be the most efficient.

The Twins are tied for 21st in the majors with 40 home runs in their 32 games. However, Minnesota is bunching those homers together.

In those 32 games, the Twins have hit at least one home run in 24 of them (75 percent). In addition, Minnesota is currently on a streak of hitting a home run in a 15 consecutive games, which is one shy of the club record set in 1979.

Minnesota had multiple homer six times during that 79 run; this year, just four times in the 15 games.

Before this season, no Twins team had a streak as long as 12 games since 2002.

The 1979 team had eight player home during their 16-game streak. Catcher Butch Wynegar his five of his seven homers that season in that span while FOX Sports North announcer Roy Smalley smashed six.

This years Twins team has seen 10 different players homer during the 15-game streak, including one by a player no longer with the franchise. Joe Mauers walk-off winner on May 5 against Boston was the only homer that game.

If this years Minnesota team is going to tie the franchise record for consecutive games with a home run, itll have to avoid a bit of a coincidence. That streak in 1979 just happened to end at home and wait for it on May 16. (We also will hate to point out that Colorados starter Tuesday is rookie Kyle Freeland, who has allowed just one homer in 40 innings.)

Following dramatically different outcomes of boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) votes attwo California schools on last week, campus antisemitism and Israel advocacy experts spoke withThe Algemeinerto break down the anatomy of a BDS campus campaign.

With the University of California-Santa Barbara (UCSB) coming back with zero votes cast in favor of BDS, and California State University-Long Beach seeing 15 student representatives vote yes for the anti-Israel motion,Tammi Rossman-Benjamin founder of the campus watchdog AMCHA Initiative said there is a complicated calculus involved in each BDS push.

To her, the unanimous and unequivocal opposition to BDS of all of a campuss Jewish student organizations is a crucial factor inheading off the efforts of anti-Zionists.

Weve seen a definite increase in the tactic of Jew splitting, where BDS activists find organizations like Jewish Voice for Peaceto run interference for them when they are accused of antisemitism, Rossman-Benjamin explained. So I think that when faced with an issue like BDS, we have to have the moral clarity to state that there is a red line and when you cross over it, the Jews will be standing on the other side, united, saying, No.

Rossman-Benjamin pointed to the letter of unified opposition produced at UCSB and signed by the campuss eight mainstream Jewish organizations as an element that was missing from the CSULB campaign against divestment.

In the letter, the groups including the campuss Hillel, Chabad, and the AEPi fraternity and sorority stated [w]e represent the broad consensus of Jewish opinion at UCSB, and they uniformly reject[ed] this one sided, counterproductive, and incredibly hurtful BDS resolution.

Anti-Zionism is highly dependent on making sure it is seen as separated from antisemitism, said Rossman-Benjamin, adding that her organization has tracked a trend in which BDS activists at a given campus will often host an explanatory antisemitism program often co-hosted with fringe Jewish groups in the days leading up to a divestment vote,to signal to people that they arent antisemites.

But if you want to see how the Jewish world really understands BDS, take a look at the people who signed a [2011] letter condemning the movement, Rossman-Benjamin said, referring to an international Stop BDS effortwhich gathered signatures from nearly 100representatives ofOrthodox, Conservative and Reform groups, Jewish fraternities and sororities and Israel advocacy organizations.

David Brog executive director of the Maccabee Task Force, a group formed in 2015 to combat demonization of Israel on campus said much of the success and failure of BDS at acampus can be attributed to what stage of pro-Israel activism students are at when the campaign is first launched.

[Zionist students at] UCSB last year realized that they shouldnt let student government rest in the hands of anti-Israel students, so they ran and won, and they got pro-Israel representatives on student government, he said.

Brog added that UCSBsHillel center has offered non-Jewish student leaders the opportunity to go on an educational mission to Israel, called a Fact Finders tour, an experience he said leaves many resistant to the BDS narrative.

CSULB, Brog noted, has devoted pro-Israel students who are eager to turn aroundthe environment that allowed BDS to pass, but they are earlierin that process of educating and changing the campus.

Meanwhile, Max Samarov the director of research and campus strategy for the StandWithUs education group said the different outcomes come down largely to a significant difference in campus demographics.

By percentage, UCSB has one of the largest Jewish populations in the UC system, and for years and years and years it has had a strong pro-Israel community, Samarov pointed out. CSULB has a strong pro-Israel presence but not nearly the same numbers.

Samarov said there have been situations where schools with small Jewish pops come together and defeat resolutions, but that the odds are harder to overcome.

According to Samarov, CSULB also contendedwith a very intense campaign of outside pressure, and what started as a debate between Long Beach students, was influenced by external, off-campus groups.

All this came together to create an atmosphere of overwhelming support for BDS and of intimidation [for those against it], he said.

Even though 2,700students won the same type of award, Tori Miller is in pretty exclusive company when you consider 330,000 students from around the world entered the competition.

The Hanover High School seniors colored pencil piece "Blackout"was submitted to the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, also known as the Globe Show and placed in the silver medal category amid thousands of entries.

Surprisingly, Miller's work was created for an anatomy class, not an art class.

We were doing a project on how chemicals affect the body, so we got to pick the topic, said Miller. Im into makeup, so part of it was to create a propaganda poster, so I was just looking for references to put on my poster. I saw the womans photo on Tumblr and I thought it was a beautiful photo to put on a poster. It was a really quick drawing and it wasnt until this year that I touched it again. I didnt add the blue background until I touched it again for this piece.

Hanover High art teacher David Crawford suggests all advanced placement art students submit pieces to the show and Miller added the piece to her portfolio for the class. Several teachers have gone out of their way to commend Miller on her success and to heap praise for her talent.

Despite her clear talent for art, Miller's love of four-legged creatures is leading her to a career as an animal care specialist. While it sounds the same as veterinary medicine, Miller contends that its different.

The schools she is looking at are Becker College in Worcester and North Shore Community College in Danvers, two of the only colleges in the area that offer the major.

Greys Anatomy Season 13, Episode 24 Spoilers: Ring of Fire Massive Explosion Rocks Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, Multiple Lives at Risk; EP Hints Cliffhanger Ending

Greys Anatomy season 13s episode 24, titled Ring of Fire, will feature a massive explosion at the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital that will put multiple lives at risk, including doctors and patients. Meanwhile, executive producer Debbie Allen hinted that the finale will end in a cliffhanger, ready for season 5.

The lengthy synopsis for Ring of Fire posted on TV Guide reads, In the 13th season finale, the doctors' lives are at risk after a dangerous patient escapes the hospital room.

Meanwhile, Alex (Justin Chambers) makes a hard choice in his relationship with Jo (Camilla Luddington); and Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) has some big news for Nathan (Martin Henderson), bringing things to a turning point.

The promo opens to a huge explosion in the hospital and a multiple alarm fire is reported. Firefighters and the immediate rescue team quickly enter Grey Sloane Memorial Hospital to evacuate the building as all staff and patients are in imminent danger. Some doctors are shown still in the middle of operations.

Meredith is also seen desperately searching for a missing little girl, who is hiding in terror somewhere in the hospital. Ben (Jason George) is also seen doing some searching of his own as he rushes into the burning building while Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) looks for Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton).

Stephanie was seen in the final moments of the previous episode hiding together with the missing girl moments prior to the big explosion. It is unclear whether Stephanie has survived the incident, considering that actress Jerrika Hinton will be leaving the series for good.

Executive producer Debbie Allen, who plays Dr. Catherine Avery, previously revealed during an interview with Entertainment Weekly that season 13s finale will end in a cliffhanger. Allen said, "There's actually two events going on at the same time that are pretty big that affect the entire hospital community.

She continued, "You should be worried There's cause for worry. There's an amazing cliffhanger that will have everybody thinking, 'Wow, where is this going?!'"

Greys Anatomy season 13s episode 24, titled Ring of Fire, is scheduled to air on ABC on May 18, 2017. It was directed by Debbie Allen and written by Stacy McKee.
