This past regular season for the Detroit Pistonshas been described as a disappointmentplenty of times, leading to afeeling that some major changes are coming. If Andre Drummond was in charge, he would do the opposite of that.

The Pistons center told reporters he feels the franchise should stay pat during itsnew logo unveiling Tuesday, according to theDetroit Free Presss Vince Ellis.

Drummond explained that even though the team missed the playoffs with a 37-45 record this year, he feels the teams main core deserves another chance:

I dont think we need to do any changes, Drummond told reporters. We had a lot of bumps in the road last season with different things going on, and it took everybody out of sync.

The Pistons had suffered from injury issues right from the start, including losing starting point guard Reggie Jackson for their first 21 games due to knee tendinitis. Detroit had alsostruggled to gain any momentum offensively throughout the year, finishing 26th in offensive efficiency in the NBA, according to basketball-reference.com.

Drummond had a down year in 2016-17, averaging 13.6 points and 13.8 rebounds per game in 81 appearances. Both of those averages are lower than his all-star campaign the previous season. He also took about two shots less per game and had a career-low in Player Efficiency Rating with 20.9.

The veterans comments are similar to what Pistons head coach and team president Stan Van Gundy told reporters last month during the teams end of season press conference.

Van Gundy said at the time that he felt the Pistons needed to make some tweaks this offseason. He explained the roster was built with Jacksons pick-and-roll abilities in mind,but with him missing 30 games total, that never had the group they had in mind.

Drummond also feels the team needs to work on improving its chemistry together for next season. He hopes to spend time with his fellow teammates throughout the off-season:

With this summer coming up, we have to do a better job staying connected the more stuff we do together, the better our camaraderie will be, Drummond said.Right now is the most important time for our team, to rest, get ourselves together, come together collectively and come up with what we need to do together.

With Drummond appearing to take a bigger leadership role heading into this summer, it will be interesting to see how the Pistons offseason goes and if their chemistry does improve enough to get them back into the postseason.

Concert review: Hill and McGraw thrill fans with their chemistry … – The Spokesman-Review

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill honored 20 years of marriage through a musical journey of romance where obvious chemistry and unmatched talent were on display.

The country superstars brought their 2017 Soul2Soul World Tour to to a nearly packed Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena on Thursday night and their instant connection as they sang the beginning of the 1997 power ballad Its Your Love characterized the night. The first lines of the song were almost entirely drowned out by cheers: Its your love / It just does something to me / Sends a shock right through me / I cant get enough.

Hills impressive vocal and physical stamina were evident throughout her solo portion of the set list. She immediately stole the show with her soaring, easy high notes and stage presence when she sang her 2006 song The Lucky One.

McGraw joined his wife again to sing his cheeky 1995 hit about a new love I Like It, I Love It and the dedicated fans sang every word. Their vocal runs were expertly executed and the harmonies were as in synch as the couples chemistry as they sang to each other.

Hill mentioned that she got her start singing in church and the gospel soul in her voice was indisputable. Her most memorable numbers of the night included her 1998 hit This Kiss and 1993 cover of Piece of My Heart, a song made popular by Janis Joplin.

McGraw emerged from the depths of the stage like the couple did at the beginning of the show to sing Angry all the Time, a song about the ways love can fall apart. Though his stage presence paled in comparison to his spouses dancing and connection to her music, the rich twang and familiar, even tone of his voice did not disappoint.

Later, he sang a snippet of Bruce Springsteens Hungry Heart, which showcased the voice that catapulted him to country superstardom and left fans cheering for more.

His performance of the 2015 hit Humble and Kind featured a tenderness and warmth that left much of the audience in tears. A touching photo and video slideshow featuring universal human emotions worn by those of difference races, genders, ages, religious traditions and occupations accompanied the performance.

The stars selected clothing from two very different closets McGraw donned a simple black shirt, slacks and a black cowboy hat while Hill switched between three sparkly dresses; their outfits perfectly echoed Hills strong femininity and McGraws laidback swagger.

Near the end of the show, the two drew close to their fans when Hill sang Mississippi Girl and McGraw sang Something Like That while weaving through the arenas many rows and grabbing hands. As the stars waved goodbye to the audience and the band and backup vocalists showcased their talents one last time, the audience chanted for an encore.

The fans asked and received a knockout performance.

McGraw and Hill sang their 2007 duet I Need You as they sat on a platform that rose high above the stage much like their voices rose to the occasion of singing the ballad with little instrumental accompaniment. It was an uninhibited and sensitive display of vocal ability and emotion.

The finale blew out of the water all of the performances that had come before, and made for a night the fans would remember long after their ear-shattering shouts ceased.

They finish each others sentences so often that the two comedians (and best pals) could be their own "Before and After" answer on Wheel of Fortune: Steve Martin Short.

Their work in the 1986 buddy comedy Three Amigos ignited the real-life friendship between Steve Martin and Martin Short.

Martin had recently entered the movie business after giving up his longtime stand-up comedy career because of creative burnout. The funnyman then traded punchlines for plucking, releasing several banjo-backed albums with his band, the Steep Canyon Rangers.

Short whom Martin calls Marty hosted a season of "Saturday Night Live" before landing in films such as Father of the Bride (also starring Martin) and appearing in Broadway musical productions.

Even though their interests intersected, the two never took their jokes beyond the friendship, until an invitationto speakat a Chicago comedy conference in 2012 sparked an epiphany.

It was a success," Short said, "because we were reminded that we had a natural chemistry with each other."

They beefed up the comedy bits, added banjo interludes and slapped on a convincing title, An Evening Youll Forget for the Rest of Your Lives."

Martin and Short will perform the show Sunday at the Ohio Theatre, where the same tongue-in-cheek humor will mark the back-and-forth banter in the show.

It constantly is changing and, for a few minutes, we talk to people and tell stories about people and our lives that are funny, Martin said. And then Marty comes out.

The general structure of the vaudeville-esque performance is set, but the comedians make room for improving their witticisms.

We often write notes for each other or make a suggestion on performing or timing, said Martin, 71. Theres nothing problematic between us.

Short, 67, sticks to corporeal improvements.

Steve usually suggests different lines that could make my section better, and my suggestions are about hygiene, he quipped.

Even though Martin and Short have an easygoing rapport onstage, they save the inside jokes for after-hours.

Neither one of us want to do anything the audience cant grasp in some way, Martin said. We dont mind jokes that are funny to us but get a small laugh, but we dont want to do jokes that get nothing. Were paranoid in that way.

For all their ribbing, Martin and Short are quick to praise each others artistic abilities.

Short stands by during Martins finger-picking segments I let them do what they do brilliantly, and Im off doing something I havent yet figured out how to do brilliantly, he said.

Said Martin:Ill tell you what Marty does do brilliantly sing. Hes never sharp; hes never flat.

Just as the friends had no plans to start their variety show, they now have no plans to quit one, either.

Comedy is something you can only practice while doing it, Martin said. Youve got to be in front of it so we just keep booking shows and make the audience suffer until we figure what were doing.

China agrees to review US biotechnology applications – Chemical & Engineering News

China will evaluate eight pending U.S. agricultural biotechnology product applications by the end of May, potentially opening the door for sales by Dow AgroSciences, DuPont Pioneer, Monsanto, and Syngenta.

China agreed to conduct the evaluations as part of an agreement unveiled by the White House on May 12. The two countries reached the trade deal after a meeting in April between U.S. President Donald J. Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

U.S. officials have prodded China for years to speed up its lengthy process for deciding whether to approve the import of new genetically modified (GM) crops. It typically takes six years to win Chinese clearance of a GM variety, twice as long as other major nations take.

Under the new deal, Chinas National Biosafety Committee will meet by the end of May to assess the safety of eight products made by four major U.S. agrochemical companies.

Dow AgroSciences is seeking approval for its corn and soybean seeds, while Syngenta and DuPont Pioneer have each applied to sell a GM corn variety in China. Monsanto makes four of the products pending approval, including herbicide-tolerant corn, soybeans, and two alfalfa varieties that have been under review for nearly six years.

The Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO), an industry trade group, wants to make sure China lives up to its commitment.

The ultimate test of success will be for China to follow its process and quickly approve the eight pending biotechnology applications and establish a synchronized, timely, and predictable process going forward, says Joseph Damond, senior vice president for international affairs at BIO.

Bucks commissioners OK state award of $2 million for Pa. Biotechnology Center expansion – The Intelligencer

The Bucks County commissioners unanimously approved a $2 million state grant that will aid the expansion of the Pennsylvania Biotechnology Center in Buckingham.

With their vote Wednesday, the commissioners accepted the agreement between the biotechnology center and the state, and agreed to act as the facilitator for the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP).

"Every entity that applies for the RACP grant has to have a cooperation agreement with one of the governments to move forward," said Lynn Bush, executive director of the Bucks County Planning Commission. "We are basically the go-between for the company and the state agency."

Plans have been in motion for years to add more laboratory and office space to the Biotechnology Center. The state grant and a $4.6 million federal grant will contribute to the overall costs of the project, estimated between $12 million and $13 million. The remainder willbe financed with a conventional loan awarded by Univest Bank.

"We're thrilled to continue our partnership with the biotechnology center and allow them the opportunity to grow and expand in that area," said Bucks County Commissioner Robert Loughery. "The center has become a real success story for the county and the region."

A groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion was held in April, but actual construction has yet to begin. Before work could begin in earnest, Bush said Thursday afternoon the plans need to go before the Buckingham Board of Supervisors for final land development approval.

The Biotechnology Center is credited with contributing approximately $1.8 billion to the local economy and supporting more than 700 jobs since its creation in 2007. A partnership with the Hepatitis B Foundation and Delaware Valley University started the initiative, but disagreements on the center's management ended the relationship.

The Hepatitis B Foundation bought out the university's interests in the center for $2 million in October, ending the disagreement and restarting the stalled expansion plans.

Last week's episode found a rapist loose in the hospital, who first holds Edwards at knife-point, then sets a fire to attempt to escape the hospital and even takes a young girl hostage. Edwards is able to save the girl but suffers severe burns in the process. In the finale, confined to her hospital bed, Edwards tells her mentorDr. Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.), "I quit."

And though Edwards will be missed, her method of exit is rare on a show known for its tragic deaths. In a goodbye note on her Instagram, Hinton noted how great it was that Edwards got to choose her own path.

"I am eternally thankful for five seasons of (Grey's Anatomy) and a graceful departure that underscores the courage it takes to choose yourself," Hinton wrote. "That Stephanie literally walks through fire to reach freedom her freedom inspires me. It also makes me curious: What does freedom look like for you, dear viewer? After all, its not only the heroics that make her brave, its her finally seeing (and seeking) a better path."

"You fans and viewers are some of the most devoted folks Ive ever met," she went on. "Thank you for your endless energy. Bosslady Shonda, Queen Debbie, and entire (Grey's Anatomy) cast and crew forever remain in my heart. The #Shondaland family is a mighty, winding forest. Now Playing Grey's Anatomy Is Spinning Off Into the Fire Department

Thirteen seasons in, Grey's Anatomy is still hot -- so hot that it's getting its second spin-off next season focused on Seattle's finest (and probably horniest) firefighters.

Details are scarce on the project, but what we do know: It received a straight-to-series order and will debut sometime next year. And in lieu of Shonda Rhimes, Grey's executive producer Stacy McKee will serve as showrunner -- which makes sense since she penned Thursday's fiery Season 13 finale. That's probably what sparked the idea! (#sorrynotsorry) The show's currently untitled, but don't worry, Shondaland, we've got some suggestions for you.

1. Sea(ttle) of Flames Look, anything like Seattle Fire is too easy and Rhimes is going to want to distance herself as much as possible from comparisons to Dick Wolf's One Chicago franchise, which she's already halfway to replicating. Sea(ttle) of Flames covers a lot of territory: The fire element, duh, the city, and the city's wet reputation. I'll refrain from the low-hanging "Why do we need firefighters anyway with the rain?" joke.

2. Scarlett's BlazeThis is ideal if Shondaland wants to continue its colored moniker nomenclature. Scarlett's a shade of red and a name! Grey's very briefly introduced "Firefighter Carroll" (Stephanie Czajkowski) in Thursday's finale, but it's unclear if she'd be the spin-off's lead right now. Nevertheless, Scarlett could still be her first name, while "blaze" would be a nod to the eventual use of Bon Jovi's "Blaze of Glory" (you know Rhimes loves her music!).

Furthermore, Rhimes' new, generically titled legal drama For the People was formerly dubbed Mother Court (LOL) and Black's Law. Since the slow is slated for midseason, it's not too late to retroactively make this the ChiJu of the Greysverse and revert to Black's Law. (The eventual cop spin-off would have a blue-hued name, obviously.)

3. Grey's InfernoOr they could retain the "Grey's" name for easy-to-recognize familiarity in the age of Peak TV (and would it surprise anyone if Meredith discovered she had another sister at this point?). Plus, everyone knows the 10th circle of hell is Shondaland's catastrophe-prone Seattle.

4. Byrnes' Ashes Non-colored, no Grey relation, but still pun-tastic. Alternate, far-more-literal spelling: Burns' Ashes.

5. How to Get Away with PyromaniaIn a Law & Order: Criminal Intent-esque twist, the show would be told from the perspectives of both the people who start fires around Seattle and the firefighters who try to put them out. (Fun fact: Czajkowski guest-starred on How to Get Away with Murder in 2015.)

6. Hose Before Bros The spin-off will almost definitely feature a female lead to join the ranks of Shondaland badass leading ladies Meredith Grey, Olivia Pope, Annalise Keating, Addison Montgomery et al., and it will definitely cover the team's personal lives (the logline promises the show will follow "heroic firefighters as they risk their lives and their hearts both in the line of duty and off the clock"). After getting burned (!) by a former flame (!!), our heroine will have a renewed focus on her career, coining the titular mantra, but then a new hoseman joins the firehouse, and well, you know.

The Grey's spin-off will premiere next year.

The anatomy of ad copy relevance: The new Google standard – Search Engine Land

Recently, enterprise-focused Google representatives have been encouraging a metric called Relevance, which is believed to be one of the three main factors that make upQuality Score. Relevance is a metric which evaluates how pertinent your ad creative is to your account structure and keywords.

At AdBasis, we have spent Q1 speaking with enterprise-level advertisers about changes being implemented to account structures and to ad units (creative) in order to improve their relevancy scores as recommended by Google. This often means that advertisers need to implement hyper-specific ads to every ad group in their accounts.

As a result, we have seen the demand for scaled ad implementations, ad unit management and creative optimization grow dramatically. This article is designed to give you a standard for what your creative should look like within every ad group. Im going to dissect the anatomy of ad structure, showcase some best practices and provide some additional commentary.

AdWords accounts are growing larger and larger. I am not talking about overall spend I am talking about the number of campaigns and ad groups within a single AdWords account.Whether youre using Single Keyword Ad Groups (SKAGs) or something close to it, chances are the number of ad groups in your account has grown significantly. SEMs everywhere are hit with a new set ofchallenges related to this shift.

If your account has been evolving, chances are your existing creative is fragmented and unmeasurable; this is a major problem. One of the biggest challenges is the management, implementation, measurement and optimization of the associated ad units. And now, with Googles new push for extremely granular ad copy relevance, your generic ad copy will no longer work.

So, what does a high-quality search ad look like?

Just as the human body can be dissected and understood, so can your search ads. Here we will evaluate the different organs that make up a search ad and how they can be altered to improve performance. Understanding how Google will evaluate your ad copy based on keyword + search term is vital to understanding how to structure your creative in bulk.

The elements of a search ad that are most vital to determining relevance are as follows:

In order to combat the problem of fragmented and differing creative at the ad group level, standardization through dynamic ad templates across similarly behaving ad groups is a great technique.

What does that mean? It means designing ad copy templatessuch that the search term can be inserted based on the ad group, but the ad copy surrounding your search term is relevant, flexible and testable.This can be achievedusing feed-based technologies to dynamically insert ad content based on ad group or campaign.

(Im notgoing to get into tech setup since thats beyond the scope of this article, but you can learn more about generating feeds and feed-based technologies here.)

Okay, so what should your dynamic ad templates look like?

In the examples below, I willshowcase how feeds can be used to dynamically insert unique creative based on the ad group or campaign (ad group and campaign are the two levels of hierarchy to which creative can be mapped).

The highlighted text in the examplesbelow represents ad copy that is not static; it is written in a way that can be swapped out orchanged based on the needs of the advertiser and how the account is set up. Imagine the highlighted elements are changing based on your ad group.

The goal of these templates is to map search terms to specific ad groups in ways that make sense in ad copy.

The company in the examplebelow has ad groups for specific action verbs (Browse, Search, Find and so on) and Makes/Models of vehicles (e.g., Toyota, Honda, Mercedes). From this, they could create a feed of action verbs by ad group, a list of Makes by ad group, and a list of Models by ad group. These variables would change dynamically based on the content in their feeds.

As you can see, this particular ad copy template would work across hundreds or thousands of ad groups which are geared toward different keywords and Makes/Models. Youd keep the quality of your ad copy relevance and be able to measure the performance of this creative template.

Through the use of dynamic templates, e-commerce brands can implement, manage and measure ad copy in bulk. Knowing if BOGO vs. 50% Off works best for particular audiences or product categories is vital information. But often, this is very difficult to execute at scale without sacrificing ad relevance.

Here is an example of a scaled ad template that can be used by e-commerce brands. The makeup of this ad template includes an audience variable (Men or Women), product category variable (Shoes, Shirts, Pants) and discount percentage (mapped to the product category).

These elements can be shifted throughout the ad and tested across ad groups/campaigns dynamically. Generating a feed of your dynamic elements and mapping them to campaigns or ad groups is crucial to standardization and measurement of ad creative at scale.

SaaS companies are unique because often, they only offer a single product. In many instances, SaaS companies will position the same product in different ways and will segment campaigns by the value proposition someone is searching for.

This provides a unique set of challenges. Another approach to dynamic ad copy templates isnt inserting a search term, but rather entire Headlines, Pathways, Descriptions and so on.

Below, this SaaS company is dynamically inserting the Headline 1 and Description based on the ad group. This gives them the opportunity to test Pathways and Headline 2 without sacrificing the customized Headline 1 and Description theyve written.

The use of dynamic ad templates across ad groups and campaigns affords you the opportunity to test your ads in two main ways:

This approach is designed to provide SEMs with an approach that is flexible enough to test across ad groups/campaigns (implement at scale) but specific enough to deliver extremely relevant ads to all searchers. Its not an easy task, but hopefully, this article will get the creative juices flowing on what technology options are out there to help improve your ad copy relevance.

Anatomy of an Upfront: Behind the Scenes of NBCU’s Road to Radio City – AdAge.com

Every spring the big TV networks mount elaborate stage shows to promote their new seasons to ad buyers, trying to establish the best possible position before beginning talks for all the upcoming commercial time. Some buyers may just as soon skip the spectacle, but networks still consider them a key tool for framing their offering.

For NBC Universal, the stakes are some $6 billion in ad commitments that Linda Yaccarino, chairman of advertising sales and client partnerships, will negotiate in the weeks following the presentation.

NBC's show at Radio City Music Hall ultimately included 10 confetti cannons, six pyrotechnics cannons and over 100 hours of rehearsal. It left out the planned dancing football players and trampoline artists when John Shea, creative director of the event, cut them at 10 p.m. the night before.

3-D Printed Ovaries Restore Fertility – Anti Aging News

It is now possible to print 3-D organs. In fact, ovary structures can be printed to replicate the design of real ovaries. A study conducted at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and McCormick School of Engineering determined these 3-D printed ovaries can even produce offspring. The results of the study were published last week in Nature Communications.

How 3-D Printed Ovaries Produce Offspring

A female mouse's ovary can be replaced witha bioprosthetic ovary. The mouse is then able to ovulate and even give birth to pups. Mother miceare also able to nurse their young. The bioprosthetic ovaries are built with 3-D printed scaffolds that hold immature eggs. These ovaries have increased hormone production and restored fertility.

Why the Study is Important

The research is proof that bioprosthetic ovaries have durable functionality across the long haul. There is no longer a need to use cadavers to build organ structures and restore health tissue. This is the breakthrough in regenerative medicine scientists have long hoped for.

Why the Research is Unique

This research is distinct from that conducted by other labs as the design of the scaffold and material (ink) is highly nuanced. The material is made of gelatin, a biological hydrogel created with collagen that is safe for use in humans. The research group knew the scaffold would have to be comprised of organic materials solid enough to be handled in surgery and porous enough to interact with body tissues. They used a gelatin that is self-supporting and capable of building several layers.

No other scientists have printed such gelatin with this level of self-support. This support makes it possible for the ovarian follicles and cells around an immature egg cell tosurvive in the ovary. In a nutshell, this is the first study to show scaffold architecture makes a meaningful difference in the survival of follicles. This would not be possible without a 3-D printer.

What the Study Means for Humans

The scientists' primary objective for creating bioprosthetic ovaries was the restoration of hormone and fertility in women who have endured cancer treatments and now face a heightened risk of infertility. Some young cancer patients' ovaries do not function at a high level and the use of hormone replacement therapy is necessary to spur puberty.

The scaffold used in the study serves to recapitulate the manner in which the ovary functions. It could serve this purpose from the age of puberty, into adulthood, menopause and beyond. Furthermore, the generation of 3-D printed implants to substitute for soft tissue will likely impact future work concerning soft tissue regenerative medicine.

A Look at how 3-D Printing Works

Think of the 3-D printing of an ovary structure as a connecting of a child's Lincoln Logs. These logs at positioned at right angles to build structures. The distance between the logs determines whether the building has doors, windows and so on. 3-D printing is similar except it is performed with depositing filaments. The distance between filaments and advancing angle between the layers can be controlled with ease. The result is the generation of highly precise pore geometries and sizes. Such 3-D printed structures are referred to as scaffolds like those used in the repair/construction of buildings.

Scaffolding supports the materials necessary to repair the structure until it is eventually removed. The remaining structure is self-sustaining without the assistance of the scaffold. 3-D printed scaffolds are implanted into the woman and its pores optimize how the immature eggs are positioned within the scaffold. This support ensures the survival of the immature egg cells andthe cells necessary for hormone production.

Dr. Lena Edwards, the chief medical officer, is a board certified Integrative Medicine and Anti-Aging Specialist.

Peter Baranoff, chairman and CEO of Promise Healthcare, remembered being here in 2011 to cut the ribbon for Promise Hospital.

At the hospital we are with people sometimes during their darkest hours of need, said Baranoff. The rejuvenation center will help people live life to the fullest. People will come to us proactively instead of reactively.

Self-ventilating workout suit keeps athletes cool and dry – Phys.Org

A team of MIT researchers has designed a breathable workout suit with ventilating flaps that open and close in response to an athlete's body heat and sweat. These flaps, which range from thumbnail- to finger-sized, are lined with live microbial cells that shrink and expand in response to changes in humidity. The cells act as tiny sensors and actuators, driving the flaps to open when an athlete works up a sweat, and pulling them closed when the body has cooled off.

The researchers have also fashioned a running shoe with an inner layer of similar cell-lined flaps to air out and wick away moisture. Details of both designs are published today in Science Advances.

Why use live cells in responsive fabrics? The researchers say that moisture-sensitive cells require no additional elements to sense and respond to humidity. The microbial cells they have used are also proven to be safe to touch and even consume. What's more, with new genetic engineering tools available today, cells can be prepared quickly and in vast quantities, to express multiple functionalities in addition to moisture response.

To demonstrate this last point, the researchers engineered moisture-sensitive cells to not only pull flaps open but also light up in response to humid conditions.

"We can combine our cells with genetic tools to introduce other functionalities into these living cells," says Wen Wang, the paper's lead author and a former research scientist in MIT's Media Lab and Department of Chemical Engineering. "We use fluorescence as an example, and this can let people know you are running in the dark. In the future we can combine odor-releasing functionalities through genetic engineering. So maybe after going to the gym, the shirt can release a nice-smelling odor."

Wang's co-authors include 14 researchers from MIT, specializing in fields including mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, architecture, biological engineering, and fashion design, as well as researchers from New Balance Athletics. Wang co-led the project, dubbed bioLogic, with former graduate student Lining Yao as part of MIT's Tangible Media group, led by Hiroshi Ishii, the Jerome B. Wiesner Professor of Media Arts and Sciences.

Shape-shifting cells

In nature, biologists have observed that living things and their components, from pine cone scales to microbial cells and even specific proteins, can change their structures or volumes when there is a change in humidity. The MIT team hypothesized that natural shape-shifters such as yeast, bacteria, and other microbial cells might be used as building blocks to construct moisture-responsive fabrics.

"These cells are so strong that they can induce bending of the substrate they are coated on," Wang says.

The researchers first worked with the most common nonpathogenic strain of E. coli, which was found to swell and shrink in response to changing humidity. They further engineered the cells to express green fluorescent protein, enabling the cell to glow when it senses humid conditions.

They then used a cell-printing method they had previously developed to print E. coli onto sheets of rough, natural latex.

The team printed parallel lines of E. coli cells onto sheets of latex, creating two-layer structures, and exposed the fabric to changing moisture conditions. When the fabric was placed on a hot plate to dry, the cells began to shrink, causing the overlying latex layer to curl up. When the fabric was then exposed to steam, the cells began to glow and expand, causing the latex flatten out. After undergoing 100 such dry/wet cycles, Wang says the fabric experienced "no dramatic degradation" in either its cell layer or its overall performance.

No sweat

The researchers worked the biofabric into a wearable garment, designing a running suit with cell-lined latex flaps patterned across the suit's back. They tailored the size of each flap, as well as the degree to which they open, based on previously published maps of where the body produces heat and sweat.

"People may think heat and sweat are the same, but in fact, some areas like the lower spine produce lots of sweat but not much heat," Yao says. "We redesigned the garment using a fusion of heat and sweat maps to, for example, make flaps bigger where the body generates more heat."

Support frames underneath each flap keep the fabric's inner cell layer from directly touching the skin, while at the same time, the cells are able to sense and react to humidity changes in the air lying just over the skin. In trials to test the running suit, study participants donned the garment and worked out on exercise treadmills and bicycles while researchers monitored their temperature and humidity using small sensors positioned across their backs.

After five minutes of exercise, the suit's flaps started opening up, right around the time when participants reported feeling warm and sweaty. According to sensor readings, the flaps effectively removed sweat from the body and lowered skin temperature, more so than when participants wore a similar running suit with nonfunctional flaps.

When Wang tried on the suit herself, she found that the flaps created a welcome sensation. After pedaling hard for a few minutes, Wang recalls that "it felt like I was wearing an air conditioner on my back."

Ventilated running shoes

The team also integrated the moisture-responsive fabric into a rough prototype of a running shoe. Where the bottom of the foot touches the sole of the shoe, the researchers sewed multiple flaps, curved downward, with the cell-lined layer facing towardthough not touchinga runner's foot. They again designed the size and position of the flaps based on heat and sweat maps of the foot.

"In the beginning, we thought of making the flaps on top of the shoe, but we found people don't normally sweat on top of their feet," Wang says. "But they sweat a lot on the bottom of their feet, which can lead to diseases like warts. So we thought, is it possible to keep your feet dry and avoid those diseases?"

As with the workout suit, the flaps on the running shoe opened and lit up when researchers increased the surrounding humidity; in dry conditions the flaps faded and closed.

Going forward, the team is looking to collaborate with sportswear companies to commercialize their designs, and is also exploring other uses, including moisture-responsive curtains, lampshades, and bedsheets.

"We are also interested in rethinking packaging," Wang says. "The concept of a second skin would suggest a new genre for responsive packaging."

"This work is an example of harnessing the power of biology to design new materials and devices and achieve new functions," says Xuanhe Zhao, the Robert N. Noyce Career Development Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and a co-author on the paper. "We believe this new field of 'living' materials and devices will find important applications at the interface between engineering and biological systems."

The effect of Moore's Law on behavioral marketing – MarTech Today

In 2003, I wrote my first analytics package. I had the same problem all marketers had: I could do almost anything with digital marketing. I could easily create ads, pages and emails with any text, any font, any image. I could add video, animations, and even make aliens dance to sell car insurance. But how could I know which would work best for me?

Big e-commerce sites had access to sophisticated analytics packages costing thousands of dollars a month. Not me. I was spending about a quarter of my time evolving the code I wrote. I eventually released it to SourceForge as Open Source Online Marketing, or OSOM.

Then, in 2005, Google launched Google Analytics. Overnight, managing my analytics setup took just a fraction of my time. And it was free. This was my first experience of Moores Law in the world of behavioral data.

Apparently, we cant shake Moores Law, not even those of us in the marketing and advertising game.

It is now cheaper to create and use behavioral data than it is not to.

Quick grounding: Moores Law was originally defined in a 1965 paper by Gordon Moore, a co-founder of Fairchild Semiconductor and Intel. It states, roughly, that the number of transistors you could fit onto a silicon chip would double every two years. In the semiconductor world, this also meant the cost of electronics would drop by half.

Moore was talking about microchips, but what about the devices that these chips power?

In his new book, Thank You for Being Late, Thomas L. Friedman identifies several technologies that have ridden Moores Law, changing everything from wealth distribution to where we live we being everyone on the globe. Think about the ready availability of inexpensive cloud storage. Think about the proliferation of sensors, many in our phones, that track epidemics or allow Waze to route us around traffic.

Friedman presents evidence that 2007 was the year that all of these trends came together, creating a supernova of change and innovation. Its now 2017, and marketing has not been left out of this radical shift.

I recently spoke with Joey Goldberg of Sticky, a company that offers eye-tracking and emotion-tracking services through the use of everyday webcams. Whats the amazing technology breakthrough that allows Sticky to track our eyes and measure our expressions without expensive infrared cameras? Its the proliferation of HD-resolution cameras. The stock webcams shipped with most laptops are of such high quality that we can track the minute movements of a persons eyes with them.

In 2012, our agency, Conversion Sciences, did an eye-tracking study to see what kinds of video would be most effective on business websites. It required an expensive camera, some sophisticated software and a couple of weeks work compiling all of the results. We recruited 22 visitors to come to our facility, then spent two days watching them view our videos. The results were very helpful.

Today, companies like Sticky can easily put 100 people in front of a video, an ad or a landing page in just a couple of days, delivering amazing reports right to our desktops. We dont even have to leave our desks. Webcam technology followed Moores Law, and the marketing solutions followed suit.

For a recent presentation, I documented nine kinds of behavioral studies a marketer could do building just one landing page, all at a low cost and without leaving their desk. These tests include AdWords data, email performance data, preference testing from sites like UsabilityHub, heatmap data from businesses like Crazy Egg and Hotjar, and AI-driven session recording from SessionCam. We are collecting qualitative data from the likes of Qualaroo and UserTesting. And we cant forget the power of AB testing tools.

Get used to it.

This is my new mantra: It is now cheaper to create and use behavioral data than it is not to.

Marketing has accelerated. The cost of launch and see is now higher than the cost of the tools and time needed to test campaigns during development. The real boon in all of this is for business owners, product managers, product marketing managers and P&L (profit and loss) managers. No longer is this kind of data the strict domain of UX designers.

Weve used behavior data to determine the most profitable pricing mix for Automatic. Weve used it to provide redesign insurance for companies like Wasp Barcode. Weve used it to determine if using Amazon is as profitable as using a Shopify cart.

These are the tools of what has been called growth hacking. But they are no longer mysterious tools of marketing research firms. They are now a part of every managers arsenal.

Behavioral marketing is no longer someone elses job.

Big companies use big data to gain an advantage. Yet the quality of your data doesnt determine the success of your business anymore. It is the quality of your questions because we can now answer almost any question you have with behavioral science driven by Moores Law.
