UPDATE: Freedom Industries pleads guilty in court

UPDATE 5 p.m., March 23: Freedom Industries pleaded guilty in federal court March 23 to three environmental crimes, officials said.

The crimes are in connection with the Jan. 9, 2014 Elk River chemical spill of MCHM.

U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin said Freedom, which owned and operated the facility from which the chemical MCHM spilled into the river, pleaded guilty to negligent discharge of a pollutant, the unlawful discharge of refuse, and violating a permit condition.

According to U.S. District Court documents, the company also paid a criminal debt payment of $650 on March 23.

Sentencing of the company is scheduled for June 29, 2015.

The case is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Environmental Protection Agency - Criminal Investigation Division.

Original Story, 10 a.m., March 23 (From AP): Freedom Industries is set to answer to a pollution charge stemming from last year's chemical spill into a river in Charleston, WV.

Two former Freedom owners and two lower-level employees pleaded guilty to a pollution charge last week and will be sentenced in June.

The spill of thousands of gallons of a coal-cleaning agent into the Elk River went into West Virginia American Water's intake 2 miles downstream on Jan. 9, 2014. It prompted a tap water ban for 300,000 residents for days.

Another former Freedom owner, Dennis Farrell, and former President Gary Southern face trial later this year on charges related to the spill. In addition, Southern faces charges related to Freedom's bankruptcy.

Vegware improves efficiency with software from Cezanne HR

Eco-friendly packaging specialist Vegware is streamlining its people processes with the help of an on-line HR software solution from Cezanne HR.

The Edinburgh-based company develops and manufactures an award-winning range of catering disposables and food packaging. All its products, which are sold globally, are made from renewable or recycled materials and are completely compostable.

Vegwares team grew rapidly from 2 in 2009 to over 50 in 2014, and the HR needs changed dramatically in this time. In particular the software managing annual leave was no longer fit for purpose, leading HR Co-ordinator Emma Young to look around for a replacement. However the search led to unimpressive results in terms of the cost and functionality of what was on the market, so Emma expanded her remit to systems that could manage a range of HR processes. A demo of Cezanne HRs Cloud-based system convinced her it would be the perfect fit for the business. The core HR and absence modules do everything I need for now and there is scope in the future to take up other modules as the company grows, rather than paying for things we are not immediately using, she says. I was also able to get a full HR system for the same price as other products that only covered annual leave.

A system that would link seamlessly with the Google calendars used across the business was essential to Vegware. The software developers at Cezanne HR were able to build in some additional functionality (which is now available to all users) so that annual leave booked via the HR system is automatically updated on Vegwares annual leave Google calendar.

We have a field based sales team so its vital to keep track of who is off when, and have this information feed into other systems that we use says Emma.

Emma did some initial training with Cezanne HR and then launched the system with a small test group. Staff found it intuitive and easy to use, and the system has now been rolled out across the business. Reaction from managers, who now have oversight of absence in their teams, has been positive and Emma has also found the system is helping her cut down on time-consuming admin.

It is helping us keep all the data in one central place and the ability for team members to self-manage makes it easier to ensure the information we have is up-to-date, she says.

Vegware is also beginning to see the benefits of improved management information. It is able to run off regular reports on headcount, for example, and can monitor sickness absence to see if any trends are emerging. Looking further ahead, Emma believes they will also find the training and development and performance management modules useful.

Its definitely a system for the long term as theres so much you can do with it. The support team have also been absolute stars and have been really thorough and quick to respond. I cant recommend it highly enough and in fact Ive already recommended it to an ex-colleague who is looking for a new HR system, she says.

Wet Wipes Are Trashing U.K. Beaches, Says Study (Video)

World By Michael Allen, Mon, March 23, 2015

There has been a 50 percent increase of wet wipes found on U.K. beaches since 2013, says a new report.

The wet wipes are found on the beach because more people are flushing the woven plastic material down the toilet, according to a new study by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS).

MCS beach watch officer, Charlotte Coombes, told the BBC:

Our sewerage systems weren't built to cope with wet wipes. When flushed they don't disintegrate like toilet paper, and they typically contain plastic so once they reach the sea, they last for a very long time.

They can cause blockages in our sewers, and then, everything else that has been flushed down the loo can either back up into people's homes, or overflow into rivers and seas.

Overflows also happen during excessive rainfall or if the plumbing hasn't been connected up properly, meaning the wrong pipes head straight to the sea. That's when we find sewage-related debris, including wet wipes, on the beach.

Sarah Mukherjee, environment director for Water U.K., told the BBC that the only things that should be flushed down the toilet are poo, pee and [toilet] paper" (video below).

Overall, trash on the beaches from 2013 to 2014 increased by 6.4 percent, noted the report.

The study was based on trash picked up on 301 U.K. beaches by over 5,000 volunteers on Sept. 19-22, 2014.

Astronomy groups call for big switch-off

HAMPSHIRE astronomy groups are calling for residents to turn off their lights and help make better conditions for stargazers.

Astronomers and The New Forest National Park Authority have joined forces to launch a campaign that aims to end light pollution in and around the district.

It comes as more people are expected to take up stargazing after last weeks solar eclipse.

They are urging people to switch off outside lights when theyre not in use, check security lights are set correctly so they are not triggered unnecessarily, use the lowest wattage possible for exterior lights and ensure theyre not pointing directly upwards.

Jake Cannon, from New Forest Stargazers, said: Astronomy is the oldest of the physical sciences and it helps us understand where we have come from and where we are headed, as well as being a good excuse to get outside and meet new people.

The New Forest is a good place for stargazing as light pollution on the whole is low, although it is becoming an increasingly difficult thing to get away from, so I hope people will become more aware of the effect their lighting can have on the sky.

Sarah Kelly, New Forest National Park Authority landscape officer, said: There are several locations in the National Park that astronomers like to visit to see the stars. However, light pollution has become more of a problem in recent years, making it harder to see the stars, and affecting the visual tranquility of the New Forest.

Residents can help to protect these dark night skies by thinking about how they might reduce the amount of outside lighting around their property, especially lights that point upwards into the sky.

Astronomy's Oldest Known 'Nova' a Cosmic Case of Mistaken Identity

Cosmic detectives are investigating a case of mistaken stellar identity: An exploding star that was once thought to be the oldest recorded nova a nuclear explosion on the surface of a dead star was more likely caused by the merger of two stars.

In 1670, a bright new star appeared in the constellation Cygnus, the Swan, and stayed there for two years you cansee the location of the new stars in this video. The short-lived star was grouped into the "nova" category, but over the last 30 years, astronomers have been questioning its identity.

A new research paper that examines the chemical makeup of the crime scene may be the final nail in the coffin. The researchers suggest that the so-called nova is instead the oldest example of another type of stellar explosion sometimes called a "red nova" a somewhat newly-discovered phenomenon that scientists are still working to understand. [Photos ofSupernova StarExplosions]

In 1670, a new star appeared just above the head of the swan that makes up the constellation Cygnus. Many astronomers took note of this newcomer, so its appearance and life span are well documented. It was dubbed Nova Vul 1670 at the time, "nova" referred simply to any new star.

In the last 300 years, however, the word "nova" has taken on a much more specific and scientific meaning.

By today's definition, a classic nova is an explosion that takes place on the surface of a white dwarf the small, dense, nugget of leftover material from a star that has stopped burning. The white dwarf syphons material away from another nearby star, the pressure builds up on its surface and a nuclear reaction releases an incredible burst of energy. (Unlike Type Ia supernovas, which start in a similar fashion, the white dwarf in a nova is expected to survive through the explosion.)

Many things about CK Vulpeculae's identity as a nova just don't line up, said Tomasz Kaminski, a postdoctoral fellow at the European Southern Observatory.

For example, novas tend to burn in the sky for days not years, as CK Vulpeculae did. Plus, the new star of 1670 didn't disappear right away. After two years, it faded, then reappeared, then faded for good which is very unusual for a nova, Kaminski said. And observations have shown that CK Vulpeculae's temperature is much lower than that of a nova, where the radiation from the nuclear reaction continues to generate heat after the explosion is done, Kaminski said.

The new study, which is detailed in the March 23 edition of the journal Nature, may finally strip CK Vulpeculae of its "nova" title. Kaminski and his co-authors looked at the different molecules present in the wreckage of CK Vulpeculae, and found a profile that they say cannot be created by a classical nova.

But if CK Vulpeculae isn't a nova, then what is it?

9 High-Growth Aerospace and Defense Stocks to Add to Your Portfolio Right Now

NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Which aerospace and defense stocks with the best growth rates should be in your portfolio?

Deloitte is forecasting 3% growth for the overall global aerospace and defense industry in 2015, fueled by the commercial aerospace business.

"The global commercial aerospace sector is expected to sustain its significant revenue and earnings growth in 2015, underlined by extended record-setting production levels both at the platform and in the supplier base," Deloitte wrote in its 2015 sector outlook. "This growth is likely to be driven primarily by increased production rates due to the accelerated replacement cycle of obsolete aircraft with next generation fuel-efficient aircraft, as well as the continued increases in passenger travel demand, especially in the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region."

On the other hand, Deloitte predicts continued decline in revenue for the global defense sector, with the U.S. defense budget "a key driver of this decline, as sales revenues lag outlays, appropriations and budget authorizations, despite calls for increases in defense spending." Still there are stocks worth considering in this sector.

All of the aerospace and defense stocks on this list are rated "Buy, B" or better ratings from TheStreet Ratings, TheStreet's proprietary ratings tool. The stocks also each had five stars for growth, meaning they have the highest growth rates for revenue and earnings in their respective sector.
