Are you tired? Do you have low energy? Have you put on some weight recently?
Despite the advances of modern medicine, there is no magic pill or fountain of youth to combat aging, poor food choices or bad exercise habits.
Butif you've been watching infomercials or flipping through a magazine lately, you may think testosterone could be a cure-all. The "low T" movement, also known as "andropause," targets aging men for their declining testosterone levels. And over the past decade, it's become amultibillion-dollarindustry.
A new editorial, releasedTuesdayin the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, makes the case that "disease mongering" created a surge in the prescribing and the use of testosterone and human growth hormone in the United States.
So what exactly is "disease mongering?" It's the concept of selling sickness to otherwise healthy people. Many people have normalailments that are simply a part of life. Not every symptom means that something is seriously wrong or even wrong at all. But if you can expand and broaden the idea of what diseases exist or "medicalize" what may be normal signs of aging then you can also expand the opportunities for treatments. And that, coupled with aggressive promotion,can create a lucrative industry. That's disease mongering in a nutshell.
Thomas Perls, co-author of the editorial, practices geriatric medicine at Boston Medical Center and has become a well-known critic ofthe burgeoning anti-aging industry. He believes the baby boomer generation has becomeparticularly vulnerable to disease mongering, mostly because of savvy marketing campaigns.
"They're a well-educated, wealthier group of people who, on a regular basis, are exposed to new cures saying, 'We can stop or reverse your aging,' or 'We can make this go away,' or 'We can make your sex life better,' " Perls said in a phone interview. "They may take it hook, line and sinker, especially if it's someone in a white coat with a stethoscope around their neck."
The "disease mongering" claim doesn't sit well with those on the other side of the spectrum, who claim that testosterone has valid and proven uses.
"The allegation of 'disease mongering' is highly disturbing," saidAbraham Morgentaler, a practicing urologist, associate clinical professor of urology at Harvard Medical School and author of the book, "Testosterone For Life." "This type of allegation is nearly always made by individuals with no experience treating patients with the condition, and so they have never seen men suffering from testosterone deficiency, nor observed the satisfying response with treatment. This is a real condition experienced by real men."
In the editorial, Perls and his co-author, David Handelsman, a professor ofendocrinology at the ANZAC Research Institute at the University of Sydney in Australia, writethat disease mongering also plays a big role in the "anti-aging" marketing for human growth hormone. The use of HGH is only medically validfor threeconditions, all of which are rare.

Indian sufi singer Lakhwinder Singh Wadali's group performed for 'Sahabat India - The Festival of India in Indonesia' in Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Surakarta and Jakarta from March 18 to 22, the Indian embassy here said.
The sheer virtuosity of Lakhwinder regaled the audience who were also impressed by deep sense of humanism and elevated status of music in Sufism.
Lakhwinder Singh Wadali comes from a family which has nurtured musical traditions for generations and are highly regarded for singing Sufi and Punjabi folk songs.
The ideas of Sufism were well received in Indonesia, a Muslim majority country which believes in liberal and tolerant Islam. The Indian diaspora which also believes in liberal religious traditions also appreciated the performances.
The attraction of Sufi tradition was evident in the good response that Lakhwinder Wadali got for their performances.
Wadali explained concepts of Sufism by citing verses of Sufi saints between his songs. The music and singing brought home the essence of verse and helped create an atmosphere where liberal religious ideas were well received. Besides Sufi, Lakhwinder Wadali also sang Punjabi and Heer folk songs.

Book publishers are decrying a rise in censorship in Hong Kong, saying book stores are returning books tied to authors who have been involved in the pro-democracy protests.
In recent weeks, authors and publishers say censorship is growing in Hong Kong, with bookstores under increasing pressure to edit their selection of books so that they do not offend the central government in Chinas mainland.
The editor-in-chief of Up Publications, Carmen Kwong Wing-suen, said her company had hundreds of books returned by Sino United Publishing through its subsidiaries Joint Publishing, Chung Hwa Book and Commercial Press.
We are just a tiny little publishing house. We have no bargaining power to do anything," she said.
Rising trend
Kwong said a publication she co-wrote on the Occupy Protests had received orders for only 28 copies instead of the normal practice of 200 copies. She said most of the books recently rejected by the publisher were not on political topics.
Former reporter Bruce Lui Ping-kuen, now a professor of journalism at Baptist University, said the rejection of books by publishers sympathetic to the pro-democracy movement is part of an increasing trend of censorship in the city.
I think looking at the book censorship case in a way its a reflection of the differences between censorship in Hong Kong and the censorship we have under one country two systems," he said.
"Because they cannot censor books and the media directly. There is no censorship system because we are under one country, two systems. And so they have to find creative ways to limit or stop voices that are hostile to the Communist Party.

Chocolat author Joanne Harris blasted the app, saying what starts out with blanking out a few words ends with 'burning libraries'
As one person bluntly put, it is f****** horrifying.
An app that blanks out swear words in e-books has prompted outrage among writers including Chocolat author Joanne Harris, who have accused it of censoring their work without permission.
Last night Mrs Harris, 50, took to her blog to write a scathing critique of the Clean Reader application which has been designed to help parents protect their children from explicit content.
It operates on a sliding scale from clean, which removes only the worst swear words, to squeaky clean which even takes out damn.
Condemning the app on her blog, in a post titled why Im saying f*** you to Clean Reader, Mrs Harris, whose book was turned into a Hollywood film starring Juliette Binoche, 51, and Johnny Depp, 51, likened the programme to examples of suppression from history.
She said: 'Anyone who works with words understands their power. Words, if used correctly, can achieve almost anything.

In a dispute over a proposed Confederate battle flag license plate, the Supreme Court struggled Monday to balance worries about government censorship and concerns that offensive messages could, at worst, incite violence.
Nearly 150 years after the end of the Civil War, the justices heard arguments in a case over Texas' refusal to issue a license plate bearing the battle flag. Nine other states allow drivers to display plates with the flag, which remains both a potent image of heritage and a racially charged symbol of repression.
Specialty license plates are big business in Texas. They brought in $17.6 million last year and state officials said there are now nearly 450 messages to choose from, from "Choose Life" to the Boy Scouts and hamburger chains.
The state rarely rejects a specialty plate, but it did turn down a request by the Texas division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans for a license plate with its logo bearing the battle flag. The group's lawsuit led to Monday's hearing.
The justices seemed uncomfortable with arguments advanced by both sides the state in defense of its actions, and the Sons of Confederate Veterans in their appeal for the symbol.
If the court finds the state must permit the battle flag on license plates, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg asked in a series of questions, would it be forced also to allow plates with a swastika, the word "jihad," and a call to make marijuana legal?
Yes, lawyer R. James George Jr., a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall 45 years ago, responded each time on behalf of the veterans group.
"That's okay? And 'Bong hits for Jesus?'" Ginsburg said, reaching back to an earlier case involving students' speech rights.
Again, George said yes, and remained firm even when Justice Elena Kagan added in "the most offensive racial epithet you can imagine."
He told the justices that "speech that we hate is something that we should be proud of protecting."
