Why is the ISS shaped so weirdly?

Chuck Bednar for redOrbit.com @BednarChuck

The International Space Station (ISS) has been in service for nearly 15 years, been visited by hundreds of astronauts, travelled well over 1.5 billion miles and provided invaluable scientific research. But have you ever stopped to wonder why it looks so odd?

[STORY: The moon got its shape from tidal forces]

Lets face it, as wonderful as the ISS is, it doesnt look near as badass as the orbital outposts that are depicted in science fiction (Star Treks Deep Space 9 or the Death Star, for example). So why did NASA and its international colleagues choose to give it such an unusual shape?

As it turns out, they didnt, according to Robert Frost, an instructor and engineer in the US space agencys Flight Operations Directorate and the author of a Quora article (reprinted by Gizmodo) that dishes the dirt on why the station lacks the sleek designs of its fictional counterparts.

Where a fictional spacecraft has the luxury of having its design dictated by style, real spacecraft are constrained by budget, tradeoffs, and practicality, Frost wrote. Every feature of the ISS can be explained by those words.

[STORY: Astronaut builds Lego ISS model in space]

We dont yet have the technology to do construction in space, so we have to assemble a large vehicle in space from launch-able components, he added. At the time of the ISS assembly, the two mechanisms for getting a large payload to space were the Space Shuttle Orbiter and the Russian Proton rocket. Those two sentences explain a lot of the ISS appearance.

Frost went on to explain that the ISS had to be assembled from pieces that were small enough to find in the space shuttles payload bay, or in the cargo compartment of a Proton rocket. As such, the maximum length and diameter of these components were limited, forcing crews to rely upon pieces that were primarily cylindrical in shape and able to be linked together.

Gerrard apologizes after his dramatic red card costs Liverpool

Updated MAR 22, 2015 12:29p ET

Steven Gerrard has apologized for his dramatic red card at Anfield, saying he had let his "team-mates, manager and supporters down".

The Liverpool captain lasted 38 seconds of his side's clash with bitter rivals Manchester United - his last against the Red Devils before he heads to Major League Soccer - as he saw red for a stamp on Ander Herrera.

It meant an immediate return to the dressing rooms for the half-time substitute and he had no excuses afterwards.

Speaking to Sky Sports in the immediate aftermath of a game his side lost 2-1, Gerrard said: "I need to accept it, the decision was right, I have let my team-mates and manager down today, even more importantly I let all the supporters down and I take full responsibility for my action.

"I tried to jump his tackle, I saw his studs and I reacted wrong. I've been in the game long enough to know when you do something like that, especially at the timing of the game, at half-time with 45 to play, a great opportunity to get back in the game, I take full responsibility for it."

Asked what caused his anger to boil over, Gerrard added: "I don't know. Probably, just the reaction to the initial tackle, I don't think I should say too much more on it, I came to speak to apologize to everyone in the dressing room, all the supporters, all the players because I take full responsibility for today's result."

Gerrard's former Liverpool team-mate Jamie Carragher described the red card as a "moment of madness" borne out of frustration.

He said on Sky Sports One: "There's no doubt that not playing at Swansea (in Liverpool's last game) and then not playing this game would be a frustration.

"He's been at Liverpool 17, 18 years, he's always been the man, the captain, there's never been a case where he's been out of the team and as soon as he's fit he goes straight back in the team.

Cyclone Pam: ABC, Red Cross Vanuatu fundraising campaign collects more than $2 million

A joint fundraising effort by the Australian Red Cross and the ABC has raised more than $2 million for Vanuatu's Cyclone Pam relief appeal.

Since Friday, all ABC radio, television, and online networks encouraged Australians to donate to the Red Cross or their preferred charity supporting those affected by the category five storm.

Red Cross chief executive officer Robert Tickner said the appeal had raised a total of $4.2 million, with almost half coming since the ABC's appeal.

"Funds raised through this effort means that not only can we help right now, but into the future as people rebuild their lives," he said.

"Funds raised with the ABC's help provide not only immediate relief like tarpaulins and toolkits to help people put a roof over their heads but also long-term support so that they can recover and rebuild, with stronger homes.

"It also means that we can provide safe drinking water to stave off diseases, and psychological support to traumatised families."

The Red Cross was the first organisation to begin relief distributions in some of the worst-affected areas, and conducted rapid assessments across 15 islands.

An estimated 166,000 people were affected by Cyclone Pam, up to 90 per cent of homes were damaged and 65,000 people were left in desperate need for shelter.

ABC managing director Mark Scott said the amount raised was a great achievement considering it was only last Tuesday that the ABC executive decided to plan the appeal.

"I am delighted at how quickly and effectively our programming and production teams came together to deliver our #withVanuatu day on Friday," he said.

Gerrard says sorry for red card

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard apologised for letting down team-mates, manager Brendan Rodgers and fans with a needless moment of madness which saw him sent off after just 43 seconds in the 2-1 defeat to Manchester United.

The midfielder accepted full responsibility for the defeat after being dismissed for stamping on Ander Herrera less than a minute after coming on for the start of the second half.

Liverpool were already trailing 1-0 thanks to Juan Mata's opener and the Spain international added a second before the Reds, playing better with 10 men, pulled one back through Daniel Sturridge.

Rodgers refused to criticise Gerrard, who departs for Los Angeles Galaxy this summer, and praised him for making a fulsome apology.

"I need to accept it, the decision was right. I have let my team-mates and manager down today, even more importantly I let all the supporters down and I take full responsibility for my action," Gerrard told Sky Sports.

"I tried to jump his tackle, I saw his studs and I reacted wrong. I've been in the game long enough to know when you do something like that, especially at the timing of the game, at half-time with 45 to play, a great opportunity to get back in the game. I take full responsibility for it."

Asked what caused his anger to boil over, the former England international added: "I don't know. Probably just the reaction to the initial tackle. I don't think I should say too much more on it. I came to speak to apologise to everyone in the dressing room, all the supporters, all the players because I take full responsibility for today's result."

Rodgers had kept Gerrard on the bench for his final encounter against United but hoped for a different kind of influence on the game having made the change at the interval.

"It was purely wanting to make an impact. He has made his apologies," said the manager.

"He is a highly competitive player. He made a great challenge when he came on (against Mata), probably our first challenge of the game.

Analysis – Van Gaal's tactical wits edge battle of the bosses

LIVERPOOL, England: There was a red card, a cloud of red mist and plenty of crimson faces, but it was ultimately one cool Dutch head that proved the difference in Manchester United's 2-1 win over Liverpool on Sunday.

Not only did Louis van Gaal comfortably win the tactical battle with Liverpool's Brendan Rodgers, but the iron-willed United coach ensured his players kept their heads as Liverpool lost theirs.

The match will be remembered for Steven Gerrard's 38-second cameo that ended abruptly when he was sent off for a stamp on Ander Herrera as well as Juan Mata's match-winning double strike.

Yet the plaudits belong equally with Van Gaal for out-thinking his Liverpool counterpart.

While all the pre-match debate centred on Rodgers' 3-4-3 formation, a perceived cure-all that had healed Liverpool's ills from the first half of the season, it was arch-pragmatist Van Gaal who threw all the tactical punches on the day.

United may have scored two goals fewer than they did in the first half against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend but the opening 45 minutes at Anfield was arguably the visitors' best of the campaign.

For all the gripes Van Gaal has had to face about how far short his United side have fallen from the club's quasi-mythical traditions of expansive football, his team's performance on Sunday was not far short of perfect.

This was not the efficient but ugly early-season United but a performance crafted from possession football, with Liverpool chasing shadows for extensive periods and Mata pouncing on openings to score with two expert finishes.

Mata has had to endure his own fair share of criticism since his move from Chelsea but he proved an unfathomable puzzle for Liverpool's defence throughout the encounter.

The Spaniard gave United the lead after 14 minutes, exposing a chasm of space between centre back Mamadou Sakho and wingback Alberto Moreno to finish sharply.

Nasa super pressure balloon cleared for takeoff

Marjorie Cook/Fairfax NZ

NOT RIGHT: Nasa campaign manager Dwayne Orr says conditions have to be perfect for the balloon launch.

Nasa

SUPER-PRESSURE: A Nasa balloon similar to the one to be launched at Wanaka.

A Nasa balloon launch attempt has been cancelled because of opposing winds, disappointing a small crowd gathered at Wanaka Airport.

The Nasa super-pressure balloon was due to lift off between 8am and 10am on Monday in Wanaka.

Mission boss Debbie Fairweather said it could be Thursday or Friday before another launch was attempted.

"We had a test run and it was a no show . . . we are used to this," she said.

"It is part of the nature of our business."

In Sweden, the team waited for a month and a half to launch and did 24 early-morning starts in a row before conditions were right.

NASA Test Fires Largest Rocket Ever; SpaceX Yawns

NASA wants to put a man on Mars . For the time being, that looks like a giant leap. But the good news is that last week, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration took at least one small step in the direction of Mars.

Artist's conception of what SLS will look like upon completion. Those two "little" rockets on the sides? Those are the boosters that NASA tested last week. Source: NASA .

Out in the Utah desert, NASA successfully test fired a new rocket engine capable of lifting American spaceships to the Moon, the Asteroid Belt, and even to Mars. Built by the rocket scientists at Orbital ATK , it burns an amalgam of powdered aluminum fuel, oxidizer, and binding agents. Clocking in at a remarkable 177 feet talland producing about 3.6 million pounds of thrust (22 million horsepower) during its two-minute burn, the new solid-fuel Space Launch System rocket booster is the biggest rocket engine we've ever built.

If you build it, they can go (to Mars) NASA plans to conduct another test firing early next year before putting the boosters to work with an actual launch, scheduled for 2018. Two boosters will be needed for NASA to launch its new Boeing -built Space Launch System into space, adding oomph to the SLS's core engine group comprising of four RS-25 engines manufactured by GenCorp .

Combined, all these engines will permit SLS to lift payloads as great as 70 metric tons into low Earth orbit (LEO). And once that's accomplished, NASA plans to double the power, adding enough engines to lift 130 tons -- all the way to Mars.

But here's the kicker: When they get there, they may find that SpaceX has already set up camp .

SpaceX has the T-shirt. Now it just needs to build the spaceship. Photo: SpaceX .

Occupying Mars While NASA and its old-industry partners -- Orbital ATK and GenCorp, Boeing and Lockheed Martin -- are all busily trying to assemble an SLS for a trip to Mars 25 years from now, privately owned SpaceX is making leap-ahead progress... today.

SpaceX already advertises on its website one rocket capable of lifting 53 tons of payload to LEO. That's about 75% of what SLS will do when it's ready... three years from now. And the modular way in which SpaceX is building its Falcon 9 family of spacecraft -- nine engines to a booster, one booster for a basic Falcon 9 rocket, three boosters for a Falcon Heavy -- suggests that, assuming my algebra is right, by adding two more boosters to the basic Falcon configuration, a Falcon "superheavy" rocket could lift as much as 88 metric tons -- 26% more than SLS.

And that's not all. As SpaceX CEO Elon Musk informed investors in a recent chat on Reddit, SpaceX is hard at work adding an order-of-magnitude improvement on the Falcon design. Dubbed "Raptor," Musk says that the new rocket he's building for a manned Mars mission will be big enough to send 100 tons of payload, and/or 100 live human colonists -- not just into orbit, but all the way to Mars .
