Freedom camper trial review today

Dunedin city councillors will decide today whether to abandon a freedom camping trial at Macandrew Bay.

The issue has been referred to the council's planning and regulatory committee, which meets today, after complaints about problems caused by freedom campers next to Ralph Ham Park.

The area was identified as one of three designated overnight stops available for freedom camping vehicles without toilets, for a two-year trial, as part of an easing of freedom camping rules across the city.

The area was supposed to cater for no more than five vehicles each night, but had been hosting more than 15 some nights, a council report said.

More than 100 people attended a public meeting in Macandrew Bay to voice their concerns last month, with some complaining freedom campers were pitching tents and using the area's public toilets to wash dishes, clothes and themselves.

That prompted the Otago Peninsula Community Board to call for the trial to be scrapped after Easter, and for a new area to be trialled for the second year.

Council reserves policy and planning officer Paula Dickel's report to today's meeting outlines steps to address the unexpected influx of campers, including extra monitoring, litter collections, security patrols and new signs.

Councillors are to consider her report, which recommends continuing the Macandrew Bay trial while staff monitor the effectiveness of the changes, then reporting back to the committee in June.

CDA confident of recovering loan funds from Freedom Air

If and when the court decides on the bankruptcy petition filed by Freedom Air, one of the companys creditors, the Commonwealth Development Authority, is confident it would be able to recover any and all obligations of the airline company.

CDA executive director Manuel Sablan said the agency is a secured creditor that would be given priority by the court.

CDA has priority lien on Freedom Airs assets, so were a secured creditor. This means that whatever happens to this [bankruptcy] case, were on the priority list of creditors that must be paid by the company. CDA has to be accommodated, said Sablan.

CDA loaned $900,000 to the airline company in March 2012, with a 7 percent interest per annum.

Sablan disclosed that prior to filing for bankruptcy in September last year, Freedom Air had been paying CDA the monthly interest. Those payments, however, stopped as soon as the carrier sought relief with the bankruptcy court.

Besides CDA, the bankrupt Freedom Air also owes the Commonwealth Ports Authority over $1.2 million in unpaid lease, passenger facility charges, and other fees. CPA, however, is an unsecured creditor, which means it has the lowest claim on the companys assets.

Thats the difference. If you are a secured creditor, your claim has to be paid off before any unsecured creditors, explained Sablan.

Last February, Freedom Air filed in Guams bankruptcy court its opposition to a motion filed by the Office of the U.S. Trustee to dismiss the bankruptcy case. Instead, Freedom Air asked for a Washington, D.C.-based broker to sell the company. Freedom Air, which does business as Aviation Services Inc., also recently filed in court a proposed agreement between the airline and its broker.

The Office of the U.S. Trustee earlier filed a motion to dismiss Freedom Airs Chapter 11 petition, stating that the debtor is suffering from substantial and continuing losses since the start of the case and lacks a reasonable likelihood of being rehabilitated.

Astronaut Chris Hadfields nighttime photo of the head of Burlington Bay made a striking impression.

There was a blanket of light and a rectangle of darkness. It was a peaceful corner in the middle of all that light, said David Galbraith of the RBG. The perspective we get when looking back from space helps us understand how precious this is.

The Royal Botanical Gardens and other organizations are creating a large urban park in that dark area.

An information session for The Cootes to Escarpment EcoPark System was held last Thursday (March 27) at West Plains United Church.

These areas are very rich in nature in the middle of an urban area, said Galbraith, the RBGs head of science.

An alliance of agencies share the goal of making sure that in 50 years, these lands are still here.

The area includes nearly 1,900 hectares (4,700 acres) of natural lands, covering parts of Aldershot, Tyandaga and Hamilton.

It includes a portion of the Niagara Escarpment, plus lands and waters associated with the Cootes (also called Cootes) Paradise Marsh and Grindstone Creek.

Weve been working on this program since 2006. We were saying how can the agencies do a better job of taking care of the land, said Galbraith. We believe that growth can be accommodated and we can work so that nature and development can exist side by side.

It's not really fair to say MMA standout Cris "Cyborg" Justino lost big at Lion Fight 14 Friday night in Las Vegas. After all, in just her third professional kickboxing match, Cyborg gave Jorina Baars, an undefeated Dutch standout, all she could handle in a thrilling all-action fight on AXS TV.

But life isn't fair. Anyone who says otherwise, to borrow from a great man, is selling something.

For five rounds Cyborg did what she always doesshe charged forward with a startling recklessness, looking to end the fight quickly. When Cyborg managed to close the distance and get into the pocket, Baars found herself thrown to the mat or fending off haymakers, hanging on for dear life.

Cyborg was a vicious, snarling animal.

Business as usual.

That wasn't, however, the story of the fight. Though Cyborg controlled the bulk of the action, the unanimous decision win for Baars was written in the few moments the inexperienced MMA champion gambled and lost. When Baars circled away or timed Cyborg's inbound trajectory properly, she made rangy knees and rangier push kicks to the face count, putting Cyborg on the mat or wobbling her several times with brilliant shots to the head.

In a perfect world, we'd be celebrating Cyborg's accomplishment. Although just 25 years old, Baars was an undefeated fighter entering her 38th professional fight. If there's such a thing as a moral victory, this was certainly one.Baars is so feared on the kickboxing circuit, in fact, that no one has been willing to fight her for three years.
