Valley View, OH (PRWEB) March 27, 2014
Nanofilm, a maker of specialty optical coatings and cleaners, announces the development of a unique nanotechnology-based liquid treatment for eyewear that cleans the surface, kills bacteria on contact, and retains the bactericidal property for up to five days after a single application. The simple spray-and-wipe formula is effective on all components of the eyewear frames, lenses and nosepads.
Nanofilm tested the efficacy of the treatment against Staphylococcus Aureus, a bacteria commonly found on the human skin. One application was sufficient to kill 99.99% of the bacteria on initial contact and continued to kill 99.99% on contact for five days.
The antibacterial agent in the formulation is well-known and has been widely used in consumer products such as toothpaste and soap for more than 40 years. The long-lasting effect is achieved by utilizing nano-sized carriers to deliver and deposit the antibacterial agent onto the surface. All ingredients used in the formulation are recognized as safe to humans and the surfaces to which the liquid is applied.
We know that bacteria can transfer and reside on a wide variety of surfaces, particularly when they come in contact with the face, and Staphylococcus Aureus is one that is commonly found on the human face, said Dr. Krish Rao, President of Nanofilm. We thought it would be of interest to develop a treatment that will not only clean and sanitize the eyewear but also provide long-lasting antibacterial performance.
Nanofilm collaborated with a partner company that is an expert in the field of bio-nanotechnology for use in drug delivery systems and consumer products. The product as formulated is still early in its developmental cycle, but test results confirm its efficacy using only ingredients recognized as safe, noted Dr. Rao. Right now we are engaged in assessing the interest in the market and building partnerships with optical companies to bring this to commercialization as quickly as possible.
This new nanotechnology-enabled approach opens up the potential of delivering a variety of performance-enhancing ingredients to surfaces. Nanofilm is exploring the possibility of similar anti-bacterial treatments for personal electronics like smartphones and tablets, as well as retail touchscreens like ATMs.
About Nanofilm Nanofilm, Ltd. is a Valley View, Ohio, private company that develops nano-layer coatings, nano-based cleaners, and nano-composite products. Prashanth G N, Bangalore, March 27, 2014, DHNS:
To foster micro and nano technologies, the IIScs Centre for Nano Science & Engineering (CNSe) plans to set up incubation centres within its campus. The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT) is the nodal agency co-ordinated by CNSe.
According to IISc professor and CNSe head, Rudra Pratap, the plan is to build an ecosystem by establishing incubation centres both inside and outside the campus. We plan to assist 20 new companies and raise the number gradually. The proposal has been sent to MCIT, which is working out details of support to the IISc, he said.
Experts will interact with startups to provide knowledge and expertise. They will be given access to IIScs nano fabrication facility, the largest in the country, spread over 14,000 square feet.
The focus will be on development of sensors and sensor technology. The CNSe will concentrate on building prototypes of sensors for a variety of tasks from sensing an approaching vehicle to monitoring noise levels in the City, enabling people to lead a quality life.
Once the prototypes are ready, it will be productised in three to five years time. The long-term plan is to have sensors in bio-medical, health and energy fields.
Scientists say that if 300 companies are developed over 10 years, a very solid ecosystem for nano sciences and technology would have been developed. According to Pratap, the endeavour is be to be among the top ecosystems globally.

TEDxPhiladelphia runs Friday at Temple University in front of a sold-out crowd. The theme is Philadelphia as the New Workshop of the World. This is one of several Q&As with scheduled speakers.

Visionary, ambitious, and disruptor are just of few of the words that have been used to describe Dr. Stephen Klasko, the recently appointed president and CEO of Thomas Jefferson University and TJU Health System. But the list of adjectives would be incomplete without also including plainspoken, and even entertaining, both rare epithets for a hospital administrator.
A native of the Philadelphia-region, he previously served as the dean of the University of South Florida medical school where, during his nine-year tenure, he delivered on a controversial plan to turn that institution into a regional powerhouse. Before running USF Health, he was dean of Drexel Universitys College of Medicine.
Klasko has blazed a distinctive path through the realm of healthcare. He worked as a professional disc jockey before going to med school. He went into private practice, delivered 2,500 babies in Allentown, then got involved in academic medicine in a weird way, Klasko said. He had an epiphany provoked by hearing doctors, mostly men, talk about hysterectomies in ways women never would. That prompted him to get involved with the creation of new patient-friendly medical devices.
Later, in the 1990s, he had another epiphany after noticing how often doctors complained about how difficult it was to practice the business of medicine.
We had all these smart people whining, Klasko said. I thought if I can deliver a 9-pound baby through a small hole, I think I can figure this out.
So he enrolled at Wharton, earned his MBA, and along the way investigated what makes doctors different when it comes to adapting to change. Said Klasko: It led to some interesting theories.

The man who was shot and killed by Medicine Hat police after pointing a firearm at an officer has been identified as Christopher Arkell.
Arkell, 50, is considered a person of interest in the death of Chester Hunchak, 67, whose body was discovered on a rural property just outside Medicine Hat where the fatal shooting took place Saturday afternoon.
Hunchak, who operated a second-hand-vehicle dealership in Medicine Hat, went missing Friday after accompanying a prospective customer on a test drive. His girlfriend reported the disappearance to Medicine Hat police that evening.
The investigation led a police officer to Hunchaks black Cadillac Escalade, spotted on a rural property near Range Road 60 where Arkell lived.
Arkell allegedly came out of the home and pointed a firearm at the officer, who retreated to his vehicle.
RCMP and Medicine Hat officers made contact with Arkell by telephone and he threatened to shoot officers.
Arkell was seen dragging Hunchaks body from behind the house into view, RCMP said, before taking a firearm and driving towards police.
He was shot and killed as he tried to leave.
Rob Storie worked alongside Arkell on the board of the Medicine Hat BMX group several years ago, and had stayed in touch with him.
It kind of blew me away when I found out, Storie said of Arkells involvement in the tragedy.
