The largest ever trial of adult stem cell therapy in heart attack patients has begun at The London Chest Hospital in the UK.

Heart disease is the world's leading cause of death. Globally, more than 17 million people died from heart disease last year. In the US, over 1 million people suffer a heart attack each year, and about half of them die.

Heart attacks are usually caused by a clot in the coronary artery, which stops the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart. If the blockage is not treated within a few hours, then it causes the heart muscle to die.

The stem cell trial - titled "The effect of intracoronary reinfusion of bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells (BM-MNC) on allcause mortality in acute myocardial infarction," or "BAMI" for short - has been made possible due to a 5.9 million ($8.1 million) award from the European Commission.

The full study involves 19 partners across France, Germany, Italy, Finland, Denmark, Spain, Belgium, Poland, the Czech Republic and the UK.

A building that once housed the 18th century South Presentation Convent and School is to be transformed into a 10m visitor centre and a sacred space for contemplation in the heart of Cork City.

The global order hope their plans for the 3.75 acre sacred site, which includes their founder, Nano Nagles grave and ample gardens, will ensure it too becomes a must-see on the Cork City Historic Tourist Trail.

Last year, Pope Francis announced that Nano Nagle was a woman of heroic virtue and declared her to be venerable, placing her on the second of the four steps to Sainthood.

Nano Nagle founded the Presentation Sisters order at Douglas Street on Christmas Eve in 1775 in response to the dire poverty and lack of education that she saw around her. Its ethos inspired the establishment of several other religious orders in Ireland, including the Presentation Brothers and the Christian Brothers.

The new complex is to be called Nano Nagle Place and is seeking to preserve the heritage, ethos and philosophy of Nano Nagle. It will include a heritage centre, an archive building and a garden coffee shop alongside Nano Nagles tomb. The project is being fully funded by the order.

Minister for Arts and Heritage Jimmy Deenihan attended yesterdays launch on Douglas St and spoke warmly of the Presentation Sisters and their unselfish contribution to this country.

Minister Deenihan it was wonderful to see new life being breathed into this old building and that he was firmly of the belief that one of the reasons the Irish were so welcome around the world was because of the work of religious orders.

He was confident that Nano Nagle Place would become an international tourist attraction, which would preserve and promote both the story of Nano Nagle and the history of the Presentation Sisters,, he said.

The Dalai Lama comes to D.C. to talk capitalism

Two things in life are certain: rebirth and taxes.

That, at least, is according to the Dalai Lama, who spoke at a conservative think tank in Washington, D.C., on Thursday about the spirituality of capitalism.

The American Enterprise Institute hosted the Tibetan spiritual leader, who melded the ideas of free will and free enterprises in a wide-ranging, three-hour longlive streamed and live blogged event.

The very purpose is to derive to seek enlightenment. Happy community, happy family, happy nation. Then happy world. We are far from the world. Where do we start? From the government? No. From the UN? No. From individuals, AEI.org's managing editorSharon Kehnemui quoted him as saying.

The Dalai Lama drew on Buddhist text to emphasize personal responsibility, a key sticking point for free-marketeconomists: Buddha emphasized you can not rely on prayer. You must rely on your actions. Buddha cannot give you what you want, you are your own master.

He alsocalled for a century of peace and a focus on connecting east and west to build economic, political and spiritual stability.

The American Enterprise Institute seems to be living by those words. AEI's president and vice president traveled to Tibet to meet with the Dalai Lama last year.

Perhaps they are hoping the Dalai Lama can lend some wisdom for libertarians whose idea of a free enterprise system is under immense strain, according to the AEI.

We must stop considering free enterprise purely in terms of economic gain and wealth creation and begin considering it in terms of human fulfillment, the institutewrote on its website.

High stakes: Canadian Space Agency wins hockey bet with NASA

It was a sweet bet that paid off in mouthfuls for the Canadian Space Agency.

On the line in the Canada-United States men's hockey wager with NASA was a box of cookies.

Thanks to Canada's semi-final victory at the Sochi Olympics on Friday, the Americans will eventually ship a box of maple creams to the International Space Station.

The U.S. space agency had accepted the challenge by wagering a cookie emblazoned with red, white and blue "Stars and Stripes" icing.

The Canadian Space Agency savoured the 1-0 victory, saying on its Twitter account: "Can't tweet. Mouth full, crumbs abound!"

With an eye on Sunday's Olympic gold-medal game against Sweden, the CSA then tweeted: "How to do you say maple cream cookies in Swedish?"

It won't be the first time the creamy biscuits have been in space.

While on the space station last April, then-Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield took a picture of a floating maple cookie and then ate it.
